Lancing Eagles Steepdown Success
L
ancing Eagles Running Club hosted their annual Steepdown Challenge race on Sunday 27th October. Nearly 400 runners took to the new 5 mile course commencing at Impulse Leisure and taking in the spectacular scenery of the South Downs. Over 70 Eagles members marshalled and supported the event. The race was won by James Baker from Chichester Runners in an impressive time of 27m 38s. Jamie Corbett from Worthing Harriers came second in 28m 08s and Toby Meanwell from Lewes AC came third in 28m 31s. The first woman to the finish line was Jade Elphick of the Portslade Hedgehoppers, taking the challenge as a

recovery run after the Beachy Head Marathon she had run the day before. Jade came in at 35m 17s with Kirsty Armstrong of the Burgess Hill Runners achieving second place with a finish time of 35m 27s and Andy Parle third in 36m 13s. Meanwhile in the junior race there was drama on the start line when Laila Hellyer from Chichester AC lost her trainer after another junior stepped on it as the race commenced. It didn’t deter her though and she was the first female to finish completing the 1 mile course in 5m 57s. The winner of the junior race was Sebastian Delliarabromley who finished in 5m 51s.

A Time for Giving? The popular tea socials the Lions hold twice-yearly take place at the Southwick Methodist Church Hall and so the Lions were delighted to be able to contribute towards a defibrillator for the Hall and even more delighted when it wasn’t needed at the tea and tinsel event on 9 November! If you want to share in that warm, fuzzy glow that you get when you give, perhaps you might want to help the Lions in their sleigh runs that start on 9 December in Southwick. Dates and starting points are as follows:

hose readers who are involved with charity work will know that you are giving all year round – not just at Christmas. Two of the most recent donations by the Lions were firstly to the MS centre’s appeal for a replacement tilt-table and hoist, and secondly towards a defibrillator at the Southwick Methodist Church Hall. The Lions’ business meetings (every fourth Tuesday except December) take place in the MS Centre and so Lions members are very aware of all the good work the Centre does. There was no hesitation amongst the club in agreeing to fund the cost of one of the pieces of required equipment, and Brighton and Lewes Lions also stepped up. Sussex MS Centre Manager Emily-Jane Stuttard said “The tilt table is an amazing piece of equipment which allows our most severely disabled members to be brought to vertical, realigning their internal organs and using muscles they otherwise wouldn’t be able to use. Some of our members are completely unable to stand alone so this gives them a real opportunity to experience this on their physiotherapy sessions!”

Talented music duo return to perform at Slindon College’s hugely successful festive fundraiser: Christmas by Candlelight at the College
S
tar vocalist Rachael Hawnt is set to return to Slindon College to give another special live performance as part of the College’s festive fundraiser this Christmas. Professional singer Rachael, a finalist in the BBC1 TV show All Together Now, will once again be accompanied by Ashley Cutler on the college’s grand piano at the ‘Christmas by Candlelight at the College’ event on Thursday 19th December. Last year’s event was an astounding success, exceeding the College’s fundraising target for it’s Playground Project. This year the College is raising funds for the new Sensory Garden Project. The aim is to improve the current ornamental garden by developing it further into a ‘Sensory Garden’. This will help the boys access a fun educational resource allowing them to explore their senses and nature through sound, smell, texture, sight etc as well as being a calming place to relax and unwind. Slindon College is an independent day and boarding school for boys aged 8-18, set in the historic Slindon House, located in the South Downs National Park. With unrivalled views of
the south coast, the 14 acre setting provides the backdrop to a stimulating, broad and balanced educational experience for pupils of all academic abilities, taking into account their strengths and talents. Slindon College Headmaster Mark Birkbeck said: “We’re thrilled to be able to spread some festive cheer while also raising funds for our Sensory Garden Project through our Christmas by Candlelight event. Rachael and Ashley are incredible performers and we are honoured to be able to host them once again for this special fundraiser. At Slindon College we seek to provide all our pupils with a stimulating, broad and balanced educational experience within a caring and supportive environment, tailored to the needs of each individual child and the new Garden will enable them to unwind in a safe environment.” Christmas by Candlelight will take place on Thursday 19th December from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. Sussex Yacht Club HQ pinnacle reached
A
milestone was reached on the new Sussex Yacht Club build with its Topping Out ceremony recently. The club’s existing HQ is to be demolished to make way for flood defences to protect Shoreham town centre. So, Sussex Yacht Club is having to rebuild its facilities just a few feet closer to the sea. The Topping Out ceremony marked the construction team reaching the highest point of the new building. It saw the club’s Commodore, Terry Kinch, place an 1892 silver coin – the same age as the club – at its pinnacle to bring good luck. Despite being unfinished, with no windows or doors, the club’s membership was allowed access to the construction site to have a first drink at a temporary upstairs bar to celebrate;
with all proceeds going to the Sussex Sailability Door to Shore Fundraising Campaign. Terry said, “It’s quite something to see the new clubhouse and facilities really starting to take shape; it was only in May that we broke the ground for the first time and here we are at the very top of the new building. “Once it’s completed it’s going to be quite a landmark for Shoreham as part of the redevelopment of the whole area. We’re really looking forward to welcoming in our local community and hope that they will enjoy the much-improved facilities that we’ll have on offer.” The new clubhouse has been designed with accessibility at its heart, going well beyond basic legal requirements to create a centre of sailing excellence for sailors with disability. Terry continued, “Sussex Yacht Club set up the charity Sussex Sailability in 2001 with the aim of encouraging people with disabilities out onto the water. “Our membership was determined that our new HQ would provide the very best sailing experience for everyone; so our plans include specially adapted heated changing rooms with hoists, easy access to all parts of the club, automatic doors, adjustable sinks, braille signage and a digital hearing loop system. “We’ve had a lot of support for this vision from the sailing fraternity, including Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie and Paralympian Helena Lucas. “We want our club to provide the very best possible facilities for all sailors, regardless of disability, and for it to be something that the people of Shoreham are really proud to be a part of.” Sussex Sailability and Sussex Yacht Club are working in partnership to raise the additional funds needed with the Door to Shore Campaign. Deep Middle of Winter
W
ell here we are at the end of another year, blink and you missed it! All in all, I think it’s been a fairly average year for weather, especially compared to last year with the extremes of temperatures. So hopefully most things have survived in the garden and anything new you have tried has turned out ok. If not, try again next year! We are well into the deep middle of winter with the really dark short days upon us, which can be quite miserable, so a period spent in the garden on a dry sunny day can really lift the winter gloom, so it’s always worth getting out there. It’s a good time to get any pruning finished and make sure you clear away any dead plants or leaves. You’ll be amazed
at how many slugs they can give a home to, not to mention harbouring diseases that can cause problems next year. If some parts of the garden need a change, now is a very good time to transplant shrubs that you want in a different place. Make sure you get the new hole dug and prepared with extra compost first. The shorter you leave a shrub out of the ground, the better its chance at survival in its new home. If you’re storing any bulbs or any crops, then make sure you regularly check them for any signs of rot. Make sure you get rid of any that are affected as soon as possible. The old adage about one bad apple is very true and applies across the board to any stored bulb, fruit or vegetable. If you have any greens such as cabbages or sprouts growing, then to avoid disappointment for the Christmas table, get them covered with a net. They are a very attractive meal for our feathered friends. Any work you do on improving the soil now will be returned next year with improved crops. Digging the ground now also helps the frost to get in and break up the soil and kill off diseases. You can get next year’s crops under way as well, by planting out garlic and onions. It always gives me a good feeling to be looking ahead to next year. If you have a pond in the garden, then it’s worth giving that some attention now. Cut back any plants around the pond that need attention and try to avoid too much debris falling in the pond when you do it. The fish and other wildlife should be heading to the bottom by now to avoid the colder temperatures, so avoid disturbing them. It is well worth leaving a tennis ball or two in the pond. This helps when the pond ices up, by preventing the oxygen supply falling, and also helps to protect the liner from splitting. A prevention well worth taking as often they are difficult to repair and costly to replace. Now is a really good time of year, now that you have cleared the garden, to have a good look back at what worked and what didn’t. If you are considering big or small changes then try to take the time to plan them out carefully. It gives you an excuse to stay in the warm as well. If the job is too big or ambitious, then it is always worth calling in a professional. We always find now is a good time of year as we can get a really good view of the garden, and its also a good time to beat the spring rush. ark Oakley M Any Garden Limited

Photographic Abstract Ideas

ast Christmas, my son did not attempt his Photography GCSE homework until the night before he was due to return to school. Hard to criticise as we’ve all been there! He appeared from his bedroom to announce that his homework task was to produce 20 photographs in the style of Bokeh. This is the blur caused by out of focus highlights and his homework instruction was to create attractive abstract images using this technique. The advice given by his photography teacher was that Christmas tree lights were perfect for this project. Unfortunately, we had cleared all Christmas lights and decorations the night before so, there was I, scrabbling about in the loft to drag the recently repacked lights out again. We draped a couple of strings of fairy lights over our curtain rail, the dark sky forming a background and he began to experiment. When I saw the results he was achieving, I decided to take some images of my own. A few examples are shown on this page.
The effect can be achieved by using the manual focus setting on the camera and then defocussing to allow the lights to blur. Some smartphone cameras will allow you to do this but you can also download an app which gives the same result if you wish to produce this effect.
Place a kitchen utensil on a surface next to a window to use natural light or put a lamp alongside. If it’s throwing a shadow that can also add interest. Interrupt that light source with a coloured filter or two – try sweet wrappers, it’s Christmas after all – and then select a fraction of the scene to frame and shoot. An image on this page is a selected part of my colander with an orange filter in front of my bedside lamp. Creating still life and abstract table top images can help to fill the dark Winter evenings for photographers. Still life doesn’t have to be a boring bowl of fruit! A variety of found objects from an afternoon’s beachcombing can serve as good photographic subjects. Enhance the texture of shells or driftwood with strong side lighting or rotate objects in front of your light to find the best angle to throw interesting shadows. Be creative, take lots of images and choose your favourite. Give it a try. You could also place an object in the foreground and focus on that to give a focal point to the image. alternatively, you could venture out at night and choose a street scene to capture with background lights to blur. Aside from Bokeh, abstracts of various types can make interesting photographic images, the only limit is your imagination. The simplest way to begin is to close in on a familiar object and frame a small, unrecognisable part of that object.

It is just the start of a whole lot of sinister events building up to a weird and terrifying climax. This classic ghost story is set in 1972, when exorcism had more general meanings. It is about a centuries old injustice exorcised by long silent spirits and the two unfortunate couples who become unwillingly involved. It was the first in the Dead of Night series broadcast by BBC television in 1972.

‘Tis the Season to be Jolly…’ or Stressed? F or some of us the approaching holiday season can mean a time of laughter, family and fun – however, for many it can be a time of stress. More money going out than coming in as expensive gifts are bought or perhaps just the amount of presents for big families and friendship circles. Then there are the family members that perhaps you rarely see due to incompatibility plus extended family all coming together under one roof. Maybe you are the one cooking the holiday meal which, for many can be an overwhelming prospect. For some, trying to meet the expectations of children, family and friends can be highly stressful, not to mention deadlines at work and an endless ‘to do’ list. For others, there is an opposite problem, when there simply are no family or friends nearby and the question “what are you doing at Christmas?” becomes a nightmare. The sadness and grief of missing those who used to be with us can be most difficult at these times of “joy. The list of stress inducing scenarios at this time of year goes on.
The Science of Stress…
Stress is primarily a physical response triggered by our reptilian brain – the amygdala. When stressed, the body thinks it is under attack and switches to ‘fight or flight’ mode, releasing a complex mix of hormones and chemicals such as adrenaline, cortisol and nor-epinephrine to prepare the body for physical action. This causes a number of reactions, from blood being diverted to muscles to shutting down unnecessary bodily functions such as digestion. As you can imagine this can cause a multitude of problems: we can’t think straight or focus clearly, we become fatigued and emotional, our sleep becomes disturbed. Our body experiences aches and pains, our muscles tense and we can experience severe headaches. Remaining in this state for extended periods of time will have a detrimental effect on our overall physical, mental and emotional health. Stress is medically recognised as the most prominent factor causing ill health in modern society including stroke, heart conditions, high blood pressure, high glucose resulting in type 2 diabetes to name but a few. 16

It doesn’t have to stay that way. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Hypnotherapy, Art Therapy, various relaxation techniques and meditation can relieve you of stress. St Barnabas House Christmas Appeal 2019 Sammie’s story
I
want to tell you about my sister, Sammie. She’s seven years younger than me. When she was born, I absolutely adored her. She was like my little dolly. In 2016, when Sammie was 27, she was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma cervical cancer. It’s one of those things that you read in the news and it never affects you. It’s always somebody else. But it was really happening. Sammie had chemoradiotherapy and brachytherapy at the hospital in Brighton. Then she was moved to St Barnabas. She was supposed to go there for pain relief and then go home. That was the plan. But, within half an hour of being there the nurses said she wouldn’t be with us for more than a week. In the end, Sammie was in St Barnabas for just two and half days. Me, my mum, Mandy and my sister-in-law Sam, stayed at St Barnabas every night with her and on the Sunday our brother, Shaun, joined us as we knew she didn’t have long left. She had loads of visitors and the staff at St Barnabas let everyone come in and let us use the day room. By Sunday night, Sammie was in and out of sleep, and not really coherent when she was awake. She passed away in the early hours of Monday morning.
The care at St Barnabas is all you could ever want for somebody that you love who is in that situation. If I were seriously ill, I would make it clear that St Barnabas is where I would want to be. There is no doubt about that. And what’s really incredible is that all of that wonderful care is provided absolutely free of charge. Raymond O. Faulkner
R
aymond Oliver Faulkner was born on the 26th of December 1894 in Shoreham By Sea. He was the son of Frederick Arthur Faulkner a bank clerk and his wife Matilda Elizabeth. In 1912 Raymond Faulkner joined the civil service. He then served in World War One until 1916, when he was wounded and invalided out, returning to his role in the civil service. Faulkner’s passion was however for Egyptology and in 1918 he attended University College, London, where he studied hieroglyphics, under the tutelage of Margaret Murray. In 1926 Faulkner took employment as an assistant to Dr Alan Gardiner, who encouraged him to publish his work on the translation of hieroglyphics. These early works were ‘The Plural and The Dual in Old Egyptian’ published in 1929 and the Papyrus Bremner-Rhind’ published in 1933. From 1946-59 Faulkner edited the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology and during these years he became a fellow of the Society Of Antiquaries. He also worked as a language assistant at University College London. Then in 1954 he became a lecturer in the Egyptian language. In 1960 he received his Doctor of Letters Degree from the University of London. In 1962 Raymond Faulkner’s ‘A Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian” was published, followed in 1966, ‘Egypt From The Inception Of The Nineteenth Dynasty To The Death Of Ramesses III’ for Cambridge Ancient History. In 1968 Faulkner began his translation of ‘The Ancient Egyptian Coffin Texts’. These were a collection of 1,185 magic spells found inscribed on the coffins of ancient Egyptian commoners. Often the spells were in an abbreviated form due to the cramped space of the writing surface. Faulkner discovered Spell 148, as it became known was the story of the “Virgin Birth” and of the “Holy Spirit”. This seemed to place the birth of Christ at a much earlier date than had been previously considered. Faulkner’s translation of the ‘Coffin Texts’ was completed in 1978 with a third and final volume. In 1969, Faulkner translated the ‘Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts’ that included the funeral spells exclusive to the Pharaohs and their families. These spells were inscribed in writing rather than in hieroglyphics on the tomb walls and the sarcophagus. In Raymond Faulkner’s published book there is reference to the Egyptian belief of a ‘Netherworld as part of the visible sky.’ The Ancient Egyptians identified the star constellation Orion as Osiris the God of resurrection. In 1972 Raymond Faulkner translated into English the ‘Papyrus of Ani’. In 1888, it had been taken from an Egyptian government storeroom, by Wallis Budge on behalf of the British Museum. The scroll had been 78 foot long but Budge had cut it into 37 pieces for transport, damaging the text in the process. The scroll included ‘The Book Of The Dead : Book Of Coming Forth By Day.’ The book had taken Egyptian priests 1000 years to write. It was a funerary text used by the Ancient Egyptians, setting out the rituals of mummification and spell casting to prepare the deceased for his or her meeting with the individual gods. Each god would then judge if the deceased was worthy of an afterlife. The text also set out the treasured goods the deceased needed to be buried with for use in the afterlife. The rituals carried out in accordance with the ‘Book Of Dead’ were transcribed onto the goods that were buried and onto the tomb walls and the sarcophagus too.
The priests of Ancient Egypt were commissioned by wealthy customers to write a unique version of the book exclusive to each. The customer would choose the spells they thought most likely to gain favour with the gods to allow them an afterlife. Therefore the priests wrote the several versions of the book in hieroglyphic illustrations and in hieratic script on a papyrus scroll. In 1895, Wallis Budge was the first to translate the most complete version of ‘The Book of Dead’, which was contained in the ‘Papyrus of Ani’. Budge put an English word to each hieroglyphic, creating an out-of-context dictionary. Faulkner’s translation is more accurate and is the definitive work, still in use today by Egyptologists. Faulkner set out his translation as a conventional reading book. Raymond Faulkner died on the 3rd of March, 1982 aged 87 and is still held in high regard for his study of the Ancient Egyptian written and pictured languages.

1. H eadaches – Headaches, when I see people in clinic are mainly associated with tension and stress, of which acupuncture really helps with. Sometimes headaches can be caused through referral of trigger points, which required a deeper technique for needling. It is very effective as a treatment to reduce headaches and is my number 1 go to treatment. 2. S ciatica and lower back pain – Over 70% of the time sciatica is caused in my experience through spasm into the gluteal region, not from the lower back directly. Acupuncture is very effective as a means to reduce sciatic type pain. 3. Achilles Tendonitis – Often with Achilles pain, especially with chronic suffers, Achilles can become quite nervy (Tendonosis) in nature and acupuncture provides an excellent way to treat this stubborn problem. 4. P lantar Fasciitis – I’ve treated many people with Plantar Fasciitis and mostly people who present with chronic pain, due to the nature of this injury worsening over time. Acupuncture can really help reduce heel pain and I will use this 90% of the time with a very high success rate. 5. Tennis Elbow – Tennis elbow is an extremely painful condition, which responds very well to a type of acupuncture technique known as periostial pecking. This technique can be immediate and quite miraculous for the sufferer.
