Steps on the north side had to be filled in. Then everything was remotely controlled from Adrian Towler Lancing and they could demolish the signal box (where the fruit & veg people now are). At this point, they COULD have put in new steps to the subway. But they didn’t. And did anyone complain? I don’t know, I was not around at the time but I suspect the new electric barriers were quicker than the old gates. They did not stay closed for too long, and people sort-of got used to it. And eventually they forgot about their subway. It became a secret. Fast forward to today. We have three, sometimes four trains while the barriers are kept closed. Waits of over 16 minutes and that’s official Network Rail figures. The taxi drivers at the station claim it can be closed for up to 40 minutes in the hour. I timed 35 minutes in the hour one Saturday evening. There are more trains How it used to be. Subway entrance is on the right now, and safety procedures mean the gates are closed for longer. Talking of safety – what about people jumping the barriers, to avoid what they think will be a long wait? We have press reports that students do it, one of our Committee (who should know better!) admits he’s done it. Tommy Ramshaw did it in February 2016 and was killed. No one would need to if they could use the subway. Is it just a matter of time before another accident or a death happens? A ‘freedom of information’ request to Network Rail asking how many people jumped the barriers per year was shrugged off: they said, with their CCTV, they only record cars hitting the barrier. Network Rail have come up with several excuses for not allowing access, like “there’s no room” or “it discriminates against the disabled” or “it’s very Tributes to Tommy Ramshaw who was killed trying to cross. TIME TO UPDATE YOUR LIFE INSURANCE? Most homeowners buy life insurance when they buy their first home and these insurance policies are normally planned to cover the term of the mortgage. But what happens once that term is over? If you took out a life insurance policy when you first stepped onto the property ladder, the chances are it was a 25-year term, linked to the mortgage. But many people in their fifties and sixties still have mortgage debts and will continue to work. In fact, a recent report showed 1.2 million people continue to work beyond the age of 65.

look attractive and most claim to accept all applicants without a medical. However, they are designed to cover smaller sums, typically to help with funeral costs. There is no fixed-term, so the insurance remains in place for as long as the policyholder pays the premiums. This means people who live longer than expected can pay far more in premiums than the policy eventually pays out.

If your family relies on your working income to maintain living standards, it’s worth checking you have adequate insurance in place. Life or health insurance can provide financial security for your family, should you die or be unable to work through ill-health – a real possibility in later life.

It pays to shop around and take advice.

Don’t be afraid of insurance costs The cost of life insurance increases with age, but this doesn’t mean it is prohibitively expensive for those in their fifties. A 50-year old with no health problems could pay less than £15 a month for a 10-year policy with £100,000 of cover. A 25-year old could buy the same cover for under £5 a month. Insurers will ask older applicants more in-depth health questions and some will need a medical.

Talk to us about whether critical illness or income protection insurance might be appropriate. These can be more expensive, but may provide greater peace of mind.

Cover for ill-health Even if you are in your fifties, the chance of dying within the next ten years remains relatively small, but there’s a more significant chance of suffering ill-health, affecting your ability to work.

With 7 well qualified, professional regulated IFAs and a high quality Principal Mortgage Adviser, we can help you ensure that you have the right protection AND the right mortgage in place.

GOVERNMENT WAKE UP CALL T

he government will today (March 4) receive its biggest ever wake-up call on the importance of sleep. Two of the UK’s leading organisations who champion good sleep – The Sleep Council and The Sleep Charity – are launching the ‘Wake Up Call’ sleep Manifesto (to download a copy visit www.thesleepmanifesto.com) that calls on the government to push sleep up the public health agenda. They want sleep to be a critical part of the Change4Life initiative and promoted as being as important to good health as diet and exercise. As part of the push, the two bodies are also calling on any individual, business or organisation concerned to promote good sleep among employees, students or the wider community, to pledge their support by signing up to their Charter for Sleep Equality*. High profile policy makers and influencers from the government, health organisations, mental wellbeing charities, trade unions and major corporates are attending the Westminster launch where a raft of keynote speakers, including Mark Rowland, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation and ex Blue Peter presenter, Zoe Salmon, are lined up to underline the critical role of good sleep to good health. Action is urgently needed, say organisers, because in terms of the effect on the economy alone, sleep deprivation is expected to cost the nation £47 billion by 2030. The ‘Wake Up Call’ Manifesto also points to some 200,000 working days a year being lost in the UK because of insufficient sleep. And it highlights the £50 million spent by the National Health Service in England each year to ensure the one in three adults affected by insomnia gets a good night’s sleep. The Manifesto makes three key calls for action: – greater understanding and recognition of the impact sleep issues have on individuals, families and societies – a right to support at the earliest possible stage for those with sleep issues – for high quality support – underpinned by government policy – to be made available for those with sleep issues

to take sleep seriously. In the same way that we have seen public health campaigns around the importance of diet and exercise, we believe the time has come for Westminster to act on promoting and supporting good sleep. “Sleep is as vital to survival as food and water but is not yet taken as seriously. We believe if steps are taken to improve peoples’ sleep, we can make a transformational difference to the lives and wellbeing of the nation.” Vicki Dawson of The Sleep Charity added: “We are also calling for improvements to the support on offer for those with sleep issues as the resources currently available are inadequate or non-existent. “Lack of sleep has an enormous impact on the lives of people, their families and wider society. We believe it is therefore imperative for the government to produce a long-term strategy – with spending commitments – that will increase awareness on a wide scale about the importance of sleep. “Every opportunity must be taken to build sleep education programmes within schools. Employers need to consider sleep issues as part of their staff’s wellbeing, shift workers need to be supported appropriately, and professionals who support those with sleep issues must receive appropriate training. “It is essential that sleep is taken seriously to support the nation’s wellbeing and we call upon the government to ‘wake up’ to the importance of sleep and to champion better sleep health for everyone.” Charlie Harrison, commercial director for Furniture Village which is sponsoring refreshments at the Westminster launch said: “Furniture Village is very proud to be supporting this exciting initiative to help raise awareness around the importance of sleep. It’s something we’re extremely passionate about and we’re thrilled to be *To sign up to the working alongside the Charter for Sleep Sleep Council Equality, and Sleep Charity email info@ on their fantastic sleepcouncil.org.uk ongoing work.”

Said Lisa Artis of The Sleep Council: “We believe this is the most significant call ever made on the government 6

78 years apart – pen pals bridge the gap between young and old thanks to St B’s Schools Project

A

n 88 year old St Barnabas House patient and 10 year old schoolboy have become pen pals after meeting at the hospice’s St B’s Schools Project – a pioneering scheme which invites local schoolchildren to visit the hospice to learn about hospice care and explore issues such as life, death and bereavement. Don Pearman, who lives on his own in Worthing, was referred to St Barnabas House in July 2019 after receiving the news that he had incurable heart failure. Don admits that before visiting St Barnabas he was “very close to giving up”. “My health had suddenly been taken away from me and I couldn’t see a future. I’d gone from being really active, to thinking, for god’s sake, just let me go. But when I walked through the door to the Day Hospice, I could feel the happiness. Even though people are unwell, I could hear laughter and joking. There was such a lovely atmosphere. The whole experience has completely turned around my perspective on life.” As well as attending the Day Hospice on a Wednesday, Don participates in the St B’s Schools Project alongside other fellow patients. Visiting schoolchildren, aged 9-10, are paired up with patients who they get to know and take part in creative activities with. Pupils receive a tour of the hospice and there is a celebration at the end to which parents are invited. This is how Don met Ollie Samson – a 10 year old pupil from Orchards Junior School in Goring-by-Sea. Don said: “When I was asked if I wanted to join the Schools Project, I thought, what, children! I was a bit nervous the first time. But we all just chatter away, and now I absolutely love it. “Before Christmas, I was paired up with a lovely lad called Ollie. When his mum came in on the final day, Ollie gave me a nice thank you card, and I was really happy when they asked if he could write to me again. “Ollie sent me a lovely Christmas card and in it, he said he’d just had his 10th birthday. So, I sent him a card and wished him a belated birthday.” Since first meeting at the Schools Project, Don and Ollie

have now exchanged three letters and Don says he “really values the companionship”. “My wife of 49 years, Doreen, died of cancer in 2004 and I’ve also sadly lost both my daughter and son to cancer. I get by alright on my own, but I don’t get many letters these days. So, I enjoy it when one comes through the post from Ollie. “I enjoy reading what Ollie’s been up to. He asks me about my family, my travels around the world and my time in the Royal Air Force. There’s lots to tell him. I’ve had some rare old times. Even though there’s a 78 year age gap, I’m pleased that we get on so well. It makes me feel like I’m young again. I think back to the little old school I went to and all the fun we had, even though there was a war going on. I say to Ollie, enjoy your school life as it passes fast.” When Ollie was told he would be visiting St Barnabas House with his classmates he admits that he was concerned that a hospice might be “a bit of a scary place”. “But when I came to St Barnabas for the first time with my school, I saw that it was a very lovely place. We visited once a week for three weeks and the people were really friendly and caring. It was a lot of fun getting to know Don and I’m glad the hospice helps him so much. After the project finished, I wanted to stay in touch with him. “I was happy when the Headteacher gave me his address to send a card to. I really enjoy receiving Don’s letters and hearing his stories.” Ollie’s mother, Kim Samson, said: “The Schools Project is an amazing initiative between local schools and St Barnabas to pair children up with patients and for us there has been a totally unexpected outcome. I’m really proud of Ollie and I think Don is wonderful and funny and he gives Ollie a totally different perspective on life.” Don adds, “I think it’s important that children like Ollie get a good understanding of life. When I was a young boy, people weren’t interested in telling you anything. When somebody was really ill, I wasn’t taken to visit them and I certainly didn’t go to any funerals. You didn’t know what was going on really. Nowadays, things are a lot more open which is much better. If you’re honest with kids, there’s less for them to be scared of.” For more information about the St B’s Schools Project visit www.stbh.org.uk/hospice-schools-project

5 Ways to Get Kids to Eat Healthier

E

very parent knows the struggle of convincing their little ones to eat more nutritious foods. Luckily, by encouraging your kids to get involved in the kitchen, you’re helping them build a solid foundation for healthier food choices. Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner offers five expert tips to get kids involved in making healthy family meals:

3. Make their favourite foods with better-for-you ingredients

1. Let the kids pick the recipe

Flip through a healthy cookbook and see which recipes the kids are interested in making. This is a good way to get kids involved in selecting healthier recipes or new food flavors, and because they helped choose, they will be more invested in trying these foods when you cook them.

Kids adore helping in the kitchen, so have them wash their hands and pull up a chair when it’s time to cook. Older kids can help with tasks like rinsing vegetables, chopping foods, measuring ingredients and cracking eggs. Younger children love to help mix, stir and do other simple tasks like using a pastry brush to spread oil.

2. Take family trips to the grocery store

5. Make it fun

Head to the store and select nutritious ingredients for recipes, meals and snacks. You can even let the kids help craft the grocery list and search for ingredients while you shop. To introduce new foods, set a goal to select one new food to try at each visit and head home to have a fun tasting.

Eating well doesn’t mean giving up favourite foods, just make them with better-for-you ingredients. Keep kids’ favourites like pizza, burgers, fries, tacos, muffins and pancakes on the menu, but just choose healthier ingredients.

4. Cook as a family

Put on some music when you cook and enjoy the quality time together. Make your meals special by lighting candles or using nice glasses. Create your own original recipe and come up with a fun name for it.

For a nutritious and delicious recipe that’s kid-approved and easy to make, try these Zucchini Muffins. Ingredients: 2 large eggs 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup butter, melted 1 medium (2 cups) zucchini, shredded Directions: Heat oven to 350 F. Place paper baking cups into 12 muffin pan cups; set aside.

Fill prepared muffin pan cups three-fourths full with batter.

Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt in bowl; mix well.

Bake 22-25 minutes or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.

Combine butter and eggs in bowl; stir into flour mixture just until moistened.

Cool 5 minutes in pan; remove to cooling rack.

Stir in zucchini. © 2016 Brandpoint – All Rights Reserved. Please mention Inside Shoreham & Southwick when responding to adverts

Lighter Days…

W

hat strange times we are living in at present. As I sit here and write this in advance of it being published, events are changing daily with new restrictions being put in place affecting us all. I am hoping by the time this comes to print, that life has settled down into the new temporary routine and that as many of us as possible are keeping well. I’m guessing that by now many of us (me included) have been in some form of lockdown for a while and some of you have the children at home as well. Also, the lighter days are now with us and so with the restrictions on socialising outside, the garden has become a haven or a place of welcome escape for many, old or young alike. It really is important to keep some form of normality to our lives with all that is going on, but obviously popping to the garden centre is somewhat problematic now! There is still lots that you can continue to do in the garden and what’s more for many it can provide some well needed exercise, if only to get your body moving and stretching, and a show of colour in the garden can do lots to lift the spirits. I’m sure many of you are limited on seeds and bulbs, bedding plants, lawn feed etc, so it really is going to be a case of make do for now. Keeping the beds tidy will make an enormous difference and if you have any compost in sacks or in the compost bin, make use of it and get it in the beds. We have had a really awful winter with so much rain (seems a lifetime away now!) that anything you can get into the beds to help boost them will pay benefits. Give it a gentle fork into the soil, but be careful of any emerging bulbs or plants coming through. If you empty the compost bin, start refilling it again. It will give you another supply quite quickly and help cut down on waste. If you haven’t got one, its pretty simple to make one up out of some old planks, bits of board or an old pallet or two. Site it in a sunny position so it benefits from the warmth and away you go, and that’s another project that’s filled up a good part of the day! The lawn should be starting to come back to life now as the sun gets on it and if you have any lawn feed use it. If not then give the edges a tidy and start mowing it. The more you mow, the more it will encourage growth and reduce the weeds. If nothing else looks good in the garden, a cut tidy lawn can transform it and there’s nothing like the smell of fresh cut grass to give you a lift a on a feeling of warmer summer days on the way. If you have bare patches in the lawn and some spare grass seed, then they can be patched in. Rather than using the seed on the lawn, grow the grass seed in trays and you then have established little patches of grass to use to repair on the lawn. You can also divide up shrubs that are getting large. That is an easy way to get more plants and it will allow you to help fill any empty parts of the garden. You simply need to split the root ball in two with a sharp spade and then get them planted straight away with a bit of compost put in the hole before you plant them.

Since many of you will have children at home, if you have access to any packet seeds then it’s a wonderful time to both entertain the children, but also educate them. Letting them prepare and plant the seeds, then care for them will give them a daily task to focus on. It can be made more interesting by getting them to measure them and keep a log of how they grow, the weather etc. If you are struggling for seeds to grow, then you can use seeds from vegetables in the kitchen. In the past I have managed to grow plants from tomatoes, courgettes and peppers quite easily. Just give them a clean off and dry them before you plant them. If younger children are in contact with their friends via Skype or other video apps they can compare notes or have a competition to see who can grow the tallest or fastest. If you have room in the garden then there is no better fun for small children than a mud patch, where they can make mud pies and jump in muddy puddles If you have old bits and pieces around the garden, you can build a bug hotel with the children. A few old bamboo canes, some old bricks and pots empty pots put together will soon encourage wildlife to start living in them and they can check daily to see what mini creatures have taken up residence in the hotel. Once they’ve seen what is there, they can record them and look them up on the internet to learn about them. There’s always a list of jobs in the garden that get put off or you never get around to doing. Emptying and tidying the shed or garage. Cleaning the barbecue. Emptying the old pots, cleaning the windows on the greenhouse, or even moving one pile of old rubbish from one corner of the garden into another corner of the garden just for a change! There’s always plenty of repairs or small projects that can be done quite simply as well. Check the fences for loose battens and slats. Check and oil all the ironmongery on gates and sheds. In virtually every shed I ever look in there is always an offcut of roof felt and some old tins of fence stain. Now is as good a time to dare to open them and give the fences a coat, and unroll the felt, remove the spiders and patch up the bits on the shed roof that need doing. There’s always a need for more shelves, hooks for hanging up tools or a simple bench in the shed. Even if you just have a balcony and you give it a clean off and put a chair out there to watch the world going by and listen to the birds, it is still a haven, and that’s what we need to do in our gardens, however big or small the space. Try and take the extra time many of us have been given to turn the garden into somewhere you can go, just to relax and get away from the TV and computer or other members of the family and listen to the sounds outside and feel the sun and fresh air. I guarantee you will feel a whole lot better and you will remember that despite what we are all going through together, the world is a wonderful place. I hope every one of you stays well and safe and we will get back to normal one way or another.

Movement and Blur

P

hotographers are often disappointed to find that their photographs are not sharp. This could be down to incorrect focussing – more on that later – or it could be camera shake, accidental movement of the camera at the time of pressing the shutter button. Most cameras and smartphones now have auto focus but some still take a split second to ‘lock on’ to the focal point of the image. Some do not work well in low light and others have centre weighted focus, sharpening whatever is in the centre of the screen. So for instance, if you are photographing two people side by side the auto focus may be locking onto the background between them which could be a long distance away, thus rendering the two people out of focus. Of course, many focussing systems now search for faces which can overcome this problem but what if those two main subjects are not people but trees? It’s good to get to know your camera or smartphone and understand how it operates so you can take command rather than to accept what it gives you in auto mode. You should be able to set your smartphone camera on manual but, if not, you can download an app which will allow you to take control. If you don’t know how to do this, Google does! Google knows everything! So help is out there. Search specifically for your brand and model because they all work in different ways and call their various modes by different names. Some models call their manual mode ‘pro’ so don’t get confused. There are also tutorials on YouTube. However, you may crave movement and blur as it can also be used creatively and there is more than one way to achieve this. Photography can record movement, a moment in time that the eye does not see. By selecting a slow shutter speed of around 1/30th of a second, it can record the swirling chaos of the dodgems or the exuberance of youth. A reflected, distorted figure hurrying to their destination or depict a perfectly innocent scene of silhouetted figures walking through an

underpass as a spooky, threatening scenario simply by adding movement and tilting the camera to create an unnerving feel to the image. All depicted in my images here on this page. These techniques can help your images to tell a story, to indicate that there is energy in the frame and not a static scene. It gives images an edge, removes them from the norm and makes them stand out. A slow shutter speed is just the start. If you have a tripod or can ensure in another way that your camera is perfectly still during exposure, you will record only the movement in the scene. You can add to that by deliberate movement of the camera during the exposure, thereby not just recording the real movement but by blurring the entire scene, whatever is in the frame whether it is moving or not. This can add drama, mystery, confusion and excitement. Then there is ‘panning’ which is to follow the movement with your camera. If you manage to sync this action, the moving object will appear relatively sharp but the rest of the scene will appear streaky as if the background is whizzing past. The only way to conquer these techniques is to experiment. Try different shutter speeds, different camera movements during exposure. Try it with auto focus both on and off. Home-Start Arun, Worthing and Adur celebrates a new Patron joining the Charity for its’ 20th Year of family support

P

atrons such as HRH Kate Middleton for Place2Be, SportsAid and The Natural History Museum and big screen actor Angelina Jolie for UNICEF are vital to the success of a charity. Home-Start is thrilled to have a very special Patron join the Charity this year. Dr Chris Warren-Adamson (Mr) is a published author and a nationally respected University Researcher with a PhD who lives locally. He has worked in the world of child welfare as a career, as a social worker, as Government adviser, as a researcher and a university teacher. Dr Chris has always believed that the matching of volunteer grand/parents to families who may need support, is one of the most effective interventions there is. Dr Chris said of his new Patron role; “I could not wait to get involved in my local Home-Start organisation. Home-Start is now an accepted part of the humanitarian fabric of the area. Its’ impact is huge as over the last three years the charity has supported 1,008 local children to a better start in life.” Home-Start is a local charity with trained volunteers providing peer support helping families with babies and pre-school age children through their challenging times. Volunteers are there for parents when they need the service the most because childhood can’t wait. Starting in the home, the approach is as individual as the people being helped. No judgement, it is compassionate, confidential help and expert support. Families struggling with post-natal depression, isolation, physical health problems, bereavement and many other issues receive the support of a volunteer who will spend around two hours a week in a family’s home supporting them in the ways they need. It is recognised that all parents need help sometimes, even those without money worries or low income. Helping families with children under 5 is positive early intervention. Bridget Richardson, Chief Executive said; “Dr Chris has lived in Sussex all his adult life with his wife (a trained child therapist) and loves its’ mix of coast, urban living and gorgeous countryside. He has very many longstanding friends here and he counts them as family. Dr Chris brings

14

family knowledge from all angles as he is close to his adult daughter and son and their own growing families. He will be an absolute asset to our work with local families. He is such a positive force for early years and child welfare.” Dr Chris says of his new role of Patron; “I look forward to contributing, as staff supporter, research consultant, and passionate ambassador for an exceptional organisation. As Patron I can use my networks to spread the news of the impactful work that Home-Start staff and volunteers do with local families. I am also looking forward to supporting the fundraising for the charity, especially the event at Rolls-Royce on Saturday 29th February. WOW! What a way to start my patronage.” Home-Start was the staff chosen House Charity at Rolls-Royce motor cars at Goodwood, Chichester for 2019 and the end of the year is marked with a Vintage themed evening at the Rolls-Royce HQ. For more information and tickets go to: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/rolls-royce-house-charityfundraiser-tickets-81341509645?aff=ebdssbdestsearch If you are interested to give your time to support local families, you can contact Home-Start staff at the office on 01903 889707 or email admin@home-startawa.org.uk with your interests. We are currently recruiting volunteers to help with family support, fundraising, administration and research. You will be trained and supervised and the rewards are endless.

Hospital Radio gets Show Sponsor

horeham based Seaside Hospital Radio, which broadcasts to Worthing and Southlands Hospitals and the wider community online at seasidehr.com, has received sponsorship from Bubbaview for its Wednesday and Saturday afternoon show Phil’s Pick ‘n’ Mix. BubbaView, based in Ferring, West Sussex, provide private 2d, 3d and 4d non diagnostic pregnancy scanning services from 8, 16 and 24/32 weeks. They also offer a “SneekPeek” early Gender DNA test which can be done from 8 weeks. Bubbaview’s owner, Claire Worthylake said “We are an enthusiastic, professional and passionate team whose aim is to provide a relaxing experience where parents can take time to bond with their baby in our friendly environment away from the hospital. We provide non-diagnostic scans which are designed to give parents the opportunity to meet their baby. We use the latest technology to provide truly magical still and moving images, which are not possible during routine NHS antenatal care. The scans allow us to provide the reassurance and bonding

that parents can have with their baby at a time that suits them. Stacey Chorley who assists Claire in the running of the pregnancy scanning studio said “We are proud to be making this contribution to Seaside Hospital Radio by supporting the work that all the members and volunteers do in providing radio entertainment and information to the patients, staff and visitors of Worthing and Southlands Hospitals. They provide a very important service. Seaside Hospital Radio presenter Phil Akers who presents Phil’s Pick ‘n’ Mix at 2pm on Wednesday and Saturdays said “I am absolutely delighted that Bubbaview are supporting Seaside Hospital Radio and sponsoring my show in particular. We are not funded by the NHS or the hospitals and as a charity, which is solely run by our members and volunteers we have to raise considerable funds each year to cover our broadcast licences, performance royalties and overheads and I very much welcome and thank Bubbaview for the contribution that they are making”

The Pleasure Gardens of Shoreham

I

t was the 11th of May 1840 and the day of the official opening of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway line. It was also the day local shipbuilder James Britton Balley hosted a fete to promote his ‘Swiss Gardens of Shoreham’. It was estimated 1,750 train passengers visited the town and its attraction on that day. Not only travelling from London, they also came from as far away as Portsmouth. The day-trippers were encouraged by the railway’s guidebook titled ‘A Rail-Road Trip to Shoreham, and a Visit to the Swiss Gardens’. This book advertised a tour of the Swiss Gardens’ two lakes in a ten-passenger miniature steamship known as the ‘Basilisk’. With a crew of only one, it departed from its quay every ten minutes, passing by the pleasure-boaters and ducks and swans that shared the lakes. The Swiss Cottage itself, according to the guidebook, had an aviary filled with exotic birds from across the world. It also had a gentlemen’s newspaper reading room, plus games rooms for Chinese billiards and bagatelle. There was a conservatory and, set on the other side of it, the exclusive ladies’ library with tables for games of chess and for scrapbooking. The Swiss Gardens also featured a large ballroom where every evening a dance was held. There was also a theatre and a music hall. The guidebook invited visitors to stroll through the north garden with its flowerbeds and summerhouses. Visitors were encouraged to climb the 60-foot high observation tower to look out across the splendid gardens and surrounding countryside. Local artist George Ruff named the tower in his landscape painting of the Swiss Cottage and gardens, ‘Castle Falkenstein’. His pictures were displayed in the gardens Diorama Pavilion. There was even a Magic Lantern Picture House (a very early cinema). No trip, according to the guidebook, was complete without a visit to the Temple of the Oracle and its resident clairvoyant. The Swiss Gardens in its heyday boasted a cricket ground, tennis courts, an archery range, bowling green and skittles area for general public use. It also had mazes and greenhouses to explore, plus a fully equipped children’s playground. Peacocks free-ranged through the gardens and were often seen outside the magic caves. On the west side of the gardens were six ship’s cannons that thundered ceremonially on special occasions. All the buildings, including the twin-towered admission entrance and the ballroom (rebuilt in 1878 to Mr Arthur Loader’s architectural plan), were constructed from Stockholm timber. Having paid the entrance fee of a shilling, everything inside the gardens was free to the visitor, even fishing in the lakes. The gardens became so popular that the attraction was known to have received more than 5,000 visitors a day, a number twice the size of the local population of

Shoreham at that time. Featured in ‘Shoreham Glories’ is an extract by a man called ‘William’ that tells of a horse-drawn tram to the gardens, available from Shoreham Station. In 1852, Edward Goodchild, The High Constable of Shoreham, purchased the pleasure gardens. The Swiss Gardens was by this time hosting the leading touring entertainment acts of the day. These included the acrobat Blondin, legendary for his tightrope crossing of Niagara Falls while carrying a man on his back. At Crystal Palace he had walked a tightrope while pushing a wheelbarrow with a man sitting inside it. On the 29th of December 1865, a Friday evening, the Swiss Gardens Theatre hosted two shows and a ball in a charity gala in aid of the New Shoreham Church (St. Mary’s). The Bridger family were among the cast of local talent who trod the boards in Tom Taylor’s comedy ‘Still Waters Run Deep’ and John Maddison Morton’s ‘Young England.’ After an entertaining night out, the audience were able to catch late trains home, as a 1:30am service ran to Worthing and a 2am one to Brighton. The author George Moore, a friend of the Bridger family and regular visitor to Buckingham House, featured the Swiss Gardens and Shoreham in his 1894 novel ‘Esther Walters,’ with Buckingham House itself becoming the book’s fictional setting of ‘Woodville.’ The Swiss Gardens changed ownership many times but its golden age was over with the arrival of the 20th century and the dawn of cinema. The buildings and gardens were gradually demolished and one of the lakes was drained to make way for property development. By 1908, of the buildings in the gardens, only the theatre remained. The council built a new school in Victoria Road on part of what had been the gardens, and the Swiss Cottage itself became a pub on the Old Shoreham Road. The surviving lake was initially still used for pleasure boating and in the winter months it was a popular ice skating rink in the early decades of the 20th century.

Whiplash!

T

his month we look at the painful whiplash injury, most commonly caused through a road traffic accident. If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident with another vehicle, then the impact of the collision can violently and forcefully throw the head forward and back, depending on the direction of impact, resulting in an overstretching of muscles, tendons and ligaments in the neck and shoulder region. Whiplash is as common in passengers as it is in drivers.

What causes Whiplash?

The velocity of the head being thrown forward and back causes overstretching of soft tissues around the neck and shoulder region, as well as possible compression of vertebrae, resulting in inflammation of joint and soft tissue, making movement very painful.

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy 467614 Telephone: 01273 741515 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Business Centre, Three SixtyAdur Fitness, 394-398 Brighton Rd, Shoreham-by-Sea, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 6RT 5EG

20

What symptoms would you expect to experience with Whiplash?

• S evere neck and shoulder pain • Pain felt on movement of the head • A restriction of movement in the head due to pain and stiffness • Headaches resulting from straining muscles joining the base of the skull • Nausea and dizziness • Difficulty getting comfortable in bed when lying • Pins and needles and/or numbness in the upper limbs • Pain in your neck and upper limbs when coughing or sneezing with force

What should you do if you experience Whiplash?

First and foremost, you should contact your doctor, as they may be able to prescribe painkillers or anti-inflammatories, and it will be recorded on your medical records. Secondly, you should notify your insurance company, as medical treatment such as physiotherapy can be arranged and covered for by your insurance. As with most acute injuries, it is important to help reduce any further damage caused by bleeding, by applying ice packs to the affected area, and to rest the area within reason, although, I do recommend very gentle mobility exercises and stretches to try and maintain movement, and so as not to stiffen up. The earlier you can receive treatment for a whiplash, the better in my opinion, therefore if you are unfortunate enough to suffer with whiplash, you should consult a physiotherapist, who will be able to assist and speed up recovery, as well as advise about driving, and prescribe exercises to help you. Where there’s a Need, there’s a Lion! Shoreham! A good job it was done when it was, as things are changing day by day if not hour by hour. You may well ask “What are the Lions going to be doing?” Well, they won’t be holding the quiz, the car boot or the donkey derby but will be continuing to donate to the food bank and also will be contacting all the elderly people who usually attend the tea social to check that they are OK. You may also want to know what you could do to help the Lions. One way is by collecting redundant mobile phones from friends and family which can be sold on with the proceeds going to local community need. If you have phones to donate, please ring the Lions number 0345 833 7356.

M

any of you will have heard this slogan before as it is the motto of Lions International. However, this is challenging times for all of us and Adur East Lions will be doing their best to help out. Only a couple of weeks ago, on 14 March, a number of Lions and ‘Friends of Lions’ took to the streets of Shoreham during the Farmers’ Market and conducted their annual collection for the Marie Curie Daffodil Appeal. Two Friends of Lions did not mind dressing as Daffy the Daffodil and wearing a silly hat to encourage people to donate. Readers will be heartened to hear that over £600 was raised! The Relaxing and Healing Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

A

nnie Knight, holistic massage therapist at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, explains why massage is much more than just a nice treat. The longer daylight hours are finally here. This gives us a chance to spend more time outside, whether gardening, taking up new sports or increasing the frequency of your usual activities. Whilst getting more active is absolutely a great lifestyle choice, we must advise you to take it easy! You could start to experience some muscle tension or even injury to tendons, ligaments or joints resulting from imbalances, tight connective tissue, postural and faulty loading issues. A great

the lower back. Tight hamstrings at the posterior of the legs will pull on the lower back and possibly and possibly cause discomfort. Tension in the arms can travel to the neck. Deep tissue massage may benefit anyone who engages in physical activity for sport or to improve fitness, but also more sedentary people and those that spend long hours at a desk or computer. Also, mental stress invariably leads to muscle tension. Massage has both a physiological and psychological effect. People often experience an emotional release after a massage. Many of the muscles in the body are layered and deep tissue massage may help to relax, lengthen and release

option for you if you start experiencing pain or tension could be deep tissue massage. Let’s take a closer look at the benefits. Deep tissue massage and appropriate exercises/stretches may enhance your performance, aid recovery and prevent injury. All sorts of soft tissue problems can be caused by repetitive and strenuous activity or trauma. When you feel tension in one part of the body, it will inevitably have an effect on other parts of the body increasing strain on muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bone, and therefore causing a reduced range of motion in the joints and less flexibility. If this tension is not released, then memory may develop in the muscles. The sooner this is treated the easier it is to correct and may help to stop the tension spreading to surrounding muscles possibly causing further problems. Compensation patterns can develop through injury, tension and time. Weakness, tension or restricted fascia in one part of the body will likely have an effect on the body as a whole. The fascia is a thin, fibrous, web of connective tissue found throughout the body that provides support and protection for the body. For example, the neck has a correlation with

holding patterns. Some muscles work in opposite pairs and others work together to perform a function or work in sequence with each other. Poor posture is often habitual and puts constant demands on soft tissue creating unhealthy muscle tone, consequently making it hard for the body to sustain an upright position. Sitting or being static for long periods can cause stress to the body. Correct posture, on the other hand, helps maintain healthy muscle tone, improves balance and co-ordination. It also improves self-confidence, deeper breathing, better digestion and reduces the risk of joint problems. When a person is not in pain, they have better posture, more flexibility, and easy movement. Core strength, good foot biomechanics and lumbopelvic stability all contribute to good posture.

Ingrown Toenails

W

hilst there are some nail shapes that are more prone to developing an ingrown toenail, this problem is commonly caused by trauma or poor toenail cutting. An ingrown toenail is determined by a nail that pierces the flesh of the toe. If severe, the toe may become infected and if left untreated, the infection can spread to the rest of the toe so the quicker you treat it, the better. People will often try to cut a ‘V’ in the nail to try to prevent ingrown toenails but sadly this is a myth. Cutting the nail straight across, avoiding cutting too low down the sides of the nail is the best way to manage your nails. However if you already have an ingrown toenail, see your podiatrist who may be able to treat you with or without surgery (a minor procedure under local anaesthetic). For more information about the treatment for ingrown toenails or any other foot problem, please make an appointment with our podiatrists Karen and Lisa by contacting us on 01273 455080 or email us at email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or visit our website on www.firstfootclinic.co.uk
