In this issue, which we have published on-line for May, we have put together local news. Alot of what you will read are activities and information on whats happening locally to support and help whilst we are still in the lockdown.

We hope that you enjoy this issue. If you have any local news, charity or art events in June, please let us know, so that we can publish it.

Of course, not all businesses are currently operating, but we want to support all the local business in the area for when we return to normalilty. Some businesses who work outside will ensure that the required safe distance is kept. Some can also offer consultations on the phone.

New ‘Helping Hands’ service supports most isolated hospice patients St Barnabas House is piloting a new service, ‘Helping Hands’, which aims to provide social and practical support to hospice patients who don’t have a network of friends and family to help them during this unsettling and challenging time.

In addition to doing everything they can to ensure hospice services at St Barnabas House continue to run as smoothly as possible, staff have rallied together to volunteer their time to support the new ‘Helping Hands’ initiative. From fundraising to finance, team members from across the organisation are helping deliver essential shopping, collecting prescriptions and delivering medication, as well as making friendly phone calls to keep in touch with patients and help tackle loneliness.

St Barnabas House employee, Claudia Pearce, works in the fundraising team but is now also helping deliver food shopping to patients.

Claudia says, “It’s really nice to do something positive and help vulnerable patients in this uncertain time. In my last shop, I couldn’t get loo roll, so I popped some in the bag from home as I didn’t want anyone to be without!”

In just one week, over 77 referrals have been made to support the hospice’s most isolated patients, with the service initially piloting with men and women who usually attend the Day Hospice once a week for social activities, respite care and emotional support. Day Hospice patient, Don Pearman, aged 88, lives alone in Worthing and is benefitting from weekly welfare chats.

Don says, “Thank you for all that you are doing for me. I do miss my visits to Day Hospice, but roll on the day when I can return to St Barnabas, my second home.”

Whilst the St Barnabas Day Hospice, hospice café and retail outlets have closed following government advice, other front line hospice services continue to run as usual, with some added measures in place. Rosemarie Finley, CEO at St Barnabas House, says, “Our priority remains with our patients and their families and we are doing everything within our power to ensure as many hospice services continue as possible.

“As well as the new Helping Hands service, outpatient appointments, therapy services, community palliative care team and Hospice at Home visits are currently still continuing, but with pre-visit calls to ensure patients aren’t experiencing any coronavirus symptoms and still wish to have a visit.

“At the hospice itself, we have opened five new beds, bringing the total number to 25. People are still able to visit their loved ones (assuming they are not experiencing any coronavirus symptoms), but we have moved to essential visiting only and ask that only two visitors come at a time.

“Thank you to everyone in the local community for your continued support. We have been extremely moved by your kind messages and offers of support during this difficult time.”

Happy Weed Hunting W HAT A GOOD end to the spring we have had so far. Lovely temperatures at Easter and the weather has been better than average for the time of year, but we have still had some decent amounts of rain, and very little frost. That’s always a good start for the garden as it comes into its most active time and starts to burst into a myriad of colours.

May is normally a warm month, but still often wet. Whilst the plants you have planted are still in their infancy and slowly growing, the weeds absolutely thrive in these conditions. You can literally see them taking over an area in a matter of days.

Try measuring a weed. It can literally put on inches in a day.

Most weeds can easily put on this sort of growth, so you really need to keep on top of them. Not only can they look untidy, but they can seriously affect the growth of your plants. Think of a weed as a bit like someone extra coming to an already packed dining table and squeezing in, and taking all the room and the food. They take food, light, water and growing room from the things you want to grow, so getting rid of them is a really important job in the garden. Although it can be a grotty job, it will have a big impact on the rest of the plants in the bed that they share with the weeds Weed killer in certain circumstances can be an option, but there is always a danger of harming other plants. If you do need to use them near other plants, then a simple trick is to cut a plastic drink bottle in half. Place the top of the bottle over the weed and squirt the weed killer through the neck of the bottle. That way it only goes over the plant you want and doesn’t get blown by the wind onto your precious plants. You

also need to be careful where the weedkiller goes when you are walking around. I have seen instances where someone has unknowingly got the weedkiller on their shoes, only to tread it over the lawn, and then been confronted by brown dead footprints in the lawn days later! Always be careful which ones you use and seek advice from where you buy it from. You really should avoid using any old ones in the sheds. Many older ones have substances in them that have been banned for either the damage it does to wildlife or to you, so be warned. If you have any old ones, then dispose of them safely and start afresh.

If you do have an area that is badly infested with weeds then they can be cleared surprisingly quickly by hand. It is very gratifying to get a small area clear. Make sure you get out any roots and I always recommend throwing them away or burning them, rather than risking putting any of them on the compost. They have evolved to survive in the less favourable conditions and will soon spring back into life if you are not careful. Once you are clear of them then it’s a lot easier to keep them under control, by either hoeing the soil, which cuts the heads of them off and takes minutes to clear a large area, or by covering the area with some weed fabric or mulch.

Whilst it’s not the most exciting job, it can be one of the most satisfying and it can make a lot of difference to how the garden will look and thrive in the coming months, so happy weed hunting and fingers crossed for better weather!

Self-Care In Uncertain Times

W are all facing unprecedented times. For many e

people, the current situation with Covid-19 in the UK has led to a greater sense of community as we all pull together and look out for each other. However, for others, the isolation and social-distancing measures have triggered heightened stress, anxiety, fear and depression.

It is imperative during this time to become more aware of self-care. Mel Maelo, therapist at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, offers some practical ways to do this.

Exercise. If you can go outside for your one hour of exercise a day, then make a point of doing so.

Vitamin D is essential for our bones but also for our mental health. Whether walking, jogging, cycling or something else, whatever the weather, exercise will aid your physical wellbeing and help lift your mood.

If you cannot leave your home due to self-isolation or other reasons, stretching and other exercises can be found online; or you could try dancing around the lounge (safely) to your favourite tune. If you are 10

fortunate enough to have a garden, making a few laps every day can be a good habit. Exercise will not only help lower stress hormones but will also help your sleep and overall mental wellbeing. If you are experiencing pain that stops you from exercising or performing daily activities, please seek advice from your GP or a qualified professional, e.g. osteopath, physiotherapist or chiropractor. Many are now doing online consultations.

Communication. Staying in touch with friends and loved ones is particularly important now, whether by phone or internet. Video calls whereby you can see each other, can make this even more personal.

Being part of a friend/family network gives you a sense of belonging and self-worth which can help you in tough times. Studies have found that lack of social connection is linked to depression and anxiety – so if you do not have close family or friends you can easily contact, see if there is a local community group that you can access online or on the phone. Listen to Music. Listening to music can have a very relaxing effect on the body and mind. Slow-paced instrumental music induces a relaxation response by helping lower blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormones. Some types of classical, Celtic, Native American and Indian music can be particularly soothing, but simply listening to whatever type of music you most enjoy can be effective at activating the relaxation response. The sounds of nature can also be very calming. This is why they’re often incorporated into relaxation and meditation music.

Deep Breathing. Mental stress activates your sympathetic nervous system, signalling your body to go into “fightor-flight” mode. During this reaction, stress hormones are released and you experience physical symptoms such as a faster heartbeat, quicker breathing and constricted blood vessels. Deep breathing exercises can help activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which controls the relaxation response. There are many types of deep breathing exercises, including diaphragmatic breathing and paced respiration. The goal is to focus your awareness on your breath, making it slower and deeper. When you breathe in deeply through your nose, your lungs fully expand and your belly rises. This helps slow your heart rate, allowing you to feel more peaceful. Certain breathwork can also help your body increase its natural dopamine levels, improving your mood and sleep.

Yet another slogan associated with the Lions, and Adur East Lions are trying their best to live up to this even under the current circumstances.

Having contacted all the elderly people who attend the tea socials twice a year, a number of people were identified who would benefit from freshly cooked meals delivered to their door.

The wonderful people at Focus Group offered to cook meals for these people and volunteers came forward from the local community, Focus and Lions to deliver the meals three times a week. All those receiving the meals are very appreciative and say the meals are extremely good and very tasty. Stuart, the chef at Focus Group, cooks these meals on top of whipping up 70 meals a day for our heroic nhs. uk staff at Worthing Hospital. This is corporate social responsibility at its best!

Adur East Lions were also contacted by the Cooperative Community Space in Ham Road in Shoreham to help fund free children’s activity packs for those on a low income. These have been sent out via the Shoreham Foodbank.

With his third run planned for Friday 10 April - dressed as Peppa Pig - James has already raised an incredible £372 for St Barnabas House, smashing his original target of £100.

James says, “It feels superb to have over tripled my target already. St Barnabas House is a charity close to my heart as the hospice offered superb care to my Father in Law and also other members of my extended family.”

Claudia Pearce, Community Fundraiser at St Barnabas House, says, “We are so thankful to supporters like James who are going to extraordinary lengths to find new ways to raise money for vital care services during this difficult time.

James Brock, Branch Manager at Michael Jones & Company estate agents in Goringby-Sea, is cheering up the local community and raising money for St Barnabas House with his weekly solo ‘Fancy Dress Friday’ fundraising runs.

When James found out the Brighton Marathon was to be postponed, he and his triathlon club ‘Tuff Fitty’ wanted to find a way to continue fundraising and make the most of their daily exercise allowance during Government lockdown.

Over the last two weekends, residents of Goring-bySea, where James lives, have been delighted to see him running past their houses on a Friday morning in outfits which have so far included The Cat in the Hat and Batman.

“With our shops now closed, events postponed, and most fundraising activities ceased for the time being, we need the support of our local community more than ever. We are incredibly grateful to James, and all our supporters. Your support makes local hospice care possible – now and in the future. Thank you.”

even harder. And while our ward staff give outstanding care, we know people are feeling isolated in our hospitals without regular visiting to look forward to.

24/7 message service launches to keep in touch with loved ones in hospital

“Our patients do better with personal contact from the people they love, so we are doing all we can to use technology to keep people in touch.”

The new system allows relatives and friends to send an email to a dedicated email address. Once an email has been received, the Trust’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) team will print and laminate the messages (including photographs) and then pass them to ward teams to be delivered to patients.

With visiting restricted in hospitals across the country, Western Sussex Hospitals is supporting families to keep in touch with their loved ones while in hospital with a new personal messaging service.

The service is available 24/7 by email and telephone for people to leave messages for patients.

Chief Nurse, Maggie Davies, said: “It’s hard enough when someone you care about is in hospital, but when you can’t visit them it’s 14

In addition, the Trust has secured 42 iPads and a number of smartphones that have been put in wipe-clean protective cases and are available on the wards for voice and video calls between patients and their loved ones.

Maggie Davies added: “When someone you care about is in hospital, you want to be in touch. You want to be able to check how they are, tell them they are loved and reassure them that you are thinking of them and want them to get better as quickly as possible. Even though we can’t let a lot of people in to say that face to face, we want to make sure those messages can still get through.

WING COMMANDER KENNETH HORATIO Wing Commander Kenneth Horatio Wallis, DSO MBE CEng FRAeS

It’s the 23rd of May 1959, and flying circuits over Shoreham to the amazement of residents and visiting spectators alike, is a small single-seat gyrocopter. The aircraft is making its maiden flight and its inventor RAF pilot Ken Wallis is flying it. The rotor chops through the air as the autogyro reaches a speed of 85 miles an hour.

Kenneth Horatio Wallis was born on the 26th of April 1916. In 1927 at the age of 11, he built his own motorbike. In 1936, inspired by the aircraft known as the ‘Flying Flea’, he decided to build his own plane. He never finished it however, due to the reported fatal crashes of other build-it-yourself aircraft.

Wallis was twice turned down by the Royal Air Force, due to being poorly sighted in his right eye. That didn’t stop him from getting a private flying licence with only 12 hours flying experience and a certificate signed by his GP. With the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, Wallis was called up for RAF service. Determined not to be a rejected a third time he cheated the eye test by reading it with his good eye unbeknown to the examiner.

Wallis first flew Westland Lysanders and was then transferred to Wellington bombers in 1942. He flew 28 missions over Germany before his poor eyesight was discovered. During the war Wallis invented miniature slot car racing, building the motorised cars with a pin to stop them flying off the track, but being ahead its time, he was never able to make his invention a commercial success.

After the war, Ken Wallis transferred to the RAF’s research and development department and part of its remit was to study captured German armaments including a non-powered German Autogyro that had been discovered. His next encounter with these machines was with the Bensen B-7 ‘Gyro-Glider’ when stationed in America in the 1950’s. In 1956 Wallis was sent on an exchange to serve with the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command during the cold war with the Soviet Union. He was flying again, this time in the US Convair B-36 ‘Peacemaker’ bomber. The largest mass-produced piston engine aircraft ever built, it had four jet engines and was able to fly non-stop for 6,000 miles with its nuclear bomb payload.

In 1958, Wallis returned from America with a new McCulloch engine and designs for experimental aircraft. He worked on a number of projects while stationed with RAF Fighter Command. The gyroplane 16

he flew at Shoreham took nine months to build. During the 1960’s, Ken Wallis based himself at Shoreham Airport and in partnership with Beagle Aircraft constructed five prototypes of his invention, the Wallis WA-116 autogyro for the British Army. The aim of the project was to produce a reconnaissance aircraft.

Unfortunately testing took place in the bitterly cold winter of 1962/63. The army pilots didn’t like the openair, unheated cockpit, so the project was scrapped.

In 1964, Wallis retired from the RAF as a Wing Commander and continued improving and building his gyroplanes and copters. The most famous was the WA-116 named ‘Little Nellie’ that appeared in the James Bond film ‘You Only Live Twice’. It was flown by Wallis himself, as a stunt double for the actor Sean Connery.

The movie was shot on location in Japan and the genuine amazed reactions of Japanese people upon seeing this mini-copter in flight are featured in the film.

In 1970, Wallis fitted a camera to his autogyro and went on a two-day aerial surveillance trip, in search for the Loch Ness Monster. Then in 1975, he was contracted

by Sussex Police to fly over Newhaven in the search for the wanted Lord Lucan, who was thought to be in the area. Wallis was by now highly sought after for his aerial camera work and his footage from the air featured in many documentaries.

Ken Wallis set 34 World Records with his autogyro flights. In 2002 he improved his own speed record to 129 miles per hour. In 2005 aged 89 he became the oldest pilot to set a world record. In 2010 the Civil Aviation Authority’s decision to place a speed restriction on autogyros, limiting them to 70mph, angered Wallis, who was now 94. He had set his mind to attempting to break the speed record that he still held, but now decided his flying days were at an end.

He died on the 1st of September 2013 aged 97 in Norfolk, still the holder or 8 world records. He was the President of the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum, and Patron of the Wolf Preservation Foundation. At Old Buckingham Airport they held a memorial event on the 29th of September 2013, which was attended by 4,000 people.

Documentary Photography

When we think of documentary photography we may be reminded of old black and white images of children playing in the street or perhaps town centre shots of a bygone age with shops that no longer exist and roads devoid of cars.

Sadly, there are similar scenes of empty streets again today but for very different reasons as we all follow the social distancing guidelines designed to lessen the effects of covid-19.

Many of the photographs that we see of those old times were never intended to be social documentary images, they were simply snaps of people and streets. However, over time they have become historical illustrations recording how we once lived.

2020.

Many websites and social media groups specialise in posting such pictures and people find them fascinating, especially if they have been taken in their home townor other areas they are familiar with. Memories come flooding back of pubs that have been demolished, schools that are no longer standing and narrow streets that are now filled with traffic.

We now have the opportunity to document perhaps the strangest of times in our living memory. During our exercise walks or daily bike rides it is important to record this unprecedented situation and change of lifestyle and make truthful, factual photographs of our times both for our own memories and for future generations to understand what is was like to live in

I often mention ‘creative’ or ‘fine art’ photography which can be taken from unusual viewpoints or abstracted with reflections, clever use of lighting, shadows, silhouettes or rolling hills but documentary photography is simply straight pictures without artist interpretation designed to educate, to be factual.

I began to document the ‘lockdown’ on daily walks from day one and here I illustrate some situations that I came across. The sad sight of the Mother’s Day signjuxtaposed with the stacked up tables and chairs showing that the expected celebrations didn’t happen as planned. The daffodils with their shadows reaching across the table of a closed cafe. The empty car park of a usually vibrant pub.

Finally, a photograph of my son against the window, not a straight social documentary shot but an emotive metaphor for social distancing guidelines.

When it is safe to do so I will resume my photo workshops at The Shoreham Centre.

Bounce back quickly from Shin Splints

T

HIS MONTH, FOLLOWING on from the theme of running and Marathons, we take a look at the common injury Shin Splints.

What are Shin Splints?

Medial tibial stress syndrome, better known as shin splints, is a painful condition to the inside of your shins, made worse by high impact activities such as walking with heavy back packs, running or dancing. There are 2 distinct types, which affect specific tissues of the shin:

Type One – Due to a stress reaction to the inside border of the shin bone.

Type Two – Due to an irritation of the outer surface of the bone, called the periostium, where the calf muscles attach and pull.

What causes it?

There are various reasons why this condition can occur, mostly being linked to overuse. Sportspeople regularly doing high impact on hard surfaces are affected most. Lack of cushion in shoes or trainers can contribute. Also, poor body mechanics can affect how you strike the ground during sport, and therefore the lower back, hips and knees can all contribute if the surrounding muscles are not strong.

How can we treat Shin Splints?

1. W ith most injuries the RICE method in the acute stages can be very beneficial.

R = Rest the area I = Ice the area to reduce swelling and inflammation C = Compress the area to help support the injury and help improve circulation E = Elevate the area to help reduce swelling 2. A fter this initial period, if you are still suffering with pain or discomfort, which worsens with activity, then you should consult a physiotherapist.

3. Anti-inflammatory gels can be good for massaging into the painful area.

4. When you consult a physiotherapist, they will be able to advise you on correcting poor biomechanics, and exercises to help strengthen weak areas of the body.

5. Orthotics (insoles) can be helpful to help with poor mechanics.

6. Refraining from high impact exercise and doing low impact activity such as cycling or swimming can be a great way to maintain fitness until your condition has settled.

Keeping calm and carrying on – 75th anniversary of VE Day

This Friday marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day and West Sussex County Council is asking residents across the county to join in on this very special occasion.

West Sussex Record Office is also the repository and conservation centre of Screen Archive South East (SASE), who have created a short seven minute archive film called ‘War & Peace’.

Whilst gatherings and events will obviously not be possible, there are still many ways of getting involved.

The county council’s Record Office and Library teams have worked together to create a resource bank that can be used to educate, enjoy and participate in the celebrations.

The film gives an impressionistic view of the Home Front and the original VE Day, as seen through the eyes of film makers across the South East of England at that time.

These include: eBooks about VE Day and World War Two, which can be borrowed for free from the online library. digitised resources about the Home Front in West Sussex, including diary accounts and newspaper reports on VE Day and VJ Day. 24

The county council is also working alongside the Royal British Legion to make sure that people from across the county can support the day in other ways.

Pete Bradbury, Armed Forces Champion for the Council, said: “In these unprecedented times, it is still key that we mark special national occasions, especially one as important as the 75th Anniversary of VE Day.

Whether that is participating in the two-minutes’ silence at 11am, remembering not only the service and sacrifice of the Second World War generation, but also to reflect on the impact Covid-19 has had on us as a nation or joining in with the VE Day livestream from the Royal British Legion, who will be sharing stories and memories from those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War. “Showing your appreciation and support will keep the memory of so many alive for years to come. If you are on social media, you can follow the activity using #VEDay75 and we would love you to share how you are celebrating VE Day with us, by posting pictures or videos and tagging in the county council on Facebook or Twitter.”
