SHOREHAM RFC
Shoreham RFC are proud to announce that they have officially reached an agreement with Richmond Rugby Club to become a pathway club from next season. This creates a brilliant opportunity for the youth players at Shoreham to gain top level coaching and create a path for them to move into elite rugby.
Richmond Rugby are a London based RFU Championship club which previously already had links to Shoreham RFC in the form of 1st XV hooker James Hadfield who is a former Shoreham RFC player and 1st XV scrum half James Lennon who is the nephew of our Youth Chair.
Shoreham Youth Chair James Drummond-Davies said “What a fabulous time to play at Shoreham Rugby. The club are moving forwards on all fronts, with a growing new Girls Section, Club house redevelopment discussions on-going with the local MP Tim Loughton, elected councillors, and council directors. There are new sponsorships deals across the youth section and now a partnership with the oldest rugby club in the world - Richmond Rugby who share our values as a community family orientated club.” Steve Hill the Directory of Rugby at Richmond said “Richmond is all about players enjoying their rugby and fulfilling their potential. James Hadfield is a terrific example of a player who gained his foundation in rugby at Shoreham RFC, continued his development at university and is now, one year after graduating, starting regularly in the RFU Championship for Richmond. We look forward to more players from Shoreham following in James' footsteps.”

WHY IT PAYS TO USE YOUR 2022/23 ISA ALLOWANCE RIGHT NOW
The 2022/23 tax year has only just started, but you should already start thinking about how you’ll use your allowances over the next 12 months. It can help maximise your assets. In the 2022/23 tax year you can deposit up to £20,000 into ISAs. If you don’t use this allowance before the end of the tax year, you lose it. You can save or invest tax-efficiently through an ISA, so making full use of your allowance can help your money go further. If you left using your 2021/22 ISA allowance until the deadline was near, don’t let your ISA slip your mind now. Drip-feeding your deposits can make your ISA goal part of your budget: If you want to maximise your ISA allowance or have a goal for how much you want to put in, making regular deposits a part of your budget can help. Depositing £1,666 into your ISA each month can be more manageable than adding a lump sum at the end of the tax year. If you don’t have a lump sum to add to your ISA, breaking down your end goal can make sense. In addition to making deposits more manageable, drip-feeding your money can be useful if you’ll be investing through an ISA. Investment markets will rise and fall throughout the year. So, by spreading out deposits, you’ll be buying at different points throughout the market cycle. It’s an approach that can remove the temptation to try and time the markets. Depositing a lump sum now means you have longer to earn interest or returns If you already have a lump sum available to deposit, doing so now means you could have an extra 12
months of interest or returns than you would if you waited until April 2023. If you’ll be saving through a Cash ISA, the extra interest added to your account over the year can really add up. Adding a lump sum if you’ll be using a Stocks and Shares ISA to invest means you can potentially benefit from an additional 12 months of investment returns. The graph below shows how investing £5,000 each tax year delivers different returns if you invested on the first working day of the tax year compared to the last working day. £200,000 £150,000 £100,000 £50,000 £0 2000 2002 2004 2006 2008 2010 Source: Hargreaves Lansdown

While both options have done well and returned over 99% growth, you would be better off by investing at the start of the tax year overall. However, you should keep in mind that investment performance cannot be guaranteed.
Please contact us on 01273 774855 or email advice@pembrokefs.co.uk to discuss your financial plan and the steps you should be taking in the 2022/23 tax year. Please quote reference PFSIS.
The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Investing in shares should be regarded as a long-term investment and should fit in with your overall attitude to risk and financial circumstances.

Edward John Trelawny Trelawny’s date of birth and birthplace are unknown but his baptism was recorded to have taken place in Marylebone, London on the 29th of November 1792. His parents were Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Trelawny-Brereton and Maria Hawkins. Edward was added to John Trelawny’s name during his cruel boarding school years, as his father often boasted that the family heritage could be traced back to serving Edward the Confessor. Attending boarding school from the age of eight Trelawny was often punished for his atrocious spelling and poor academic work, as his dyslexia was never recognised.
In 1804, at twelve years of age he looked forward to a life at sea, as it was the custom of the gentry to enlist their youngest sons in the navy. At the age of thirteen he became a first class volunteer on board HMS Superb then transferred to HMS Temeraire, then HMS Colossus before going on to study at the naval school in Plymouth. In 1806 he was posted to HMS Woolwich, a ship that voyaged to the Cape of Good Hope and also to St. Helena. In 1809 he served on board HMS Cornelia during its deployment to India to curb the Napoleonic French navy’s attacks on trade in the Indian Ocean. The raids and piracy were having a damaging effect on the British Empire and the decision was taken to invade and occupy the Isle de France. On the 29th of November 1810 HMS Cornelia was part of the invasion force that captured the island and the British renamed it Mauritius.
In 1811 Trelawny was serving on the captured French frigate Président renamed HMS President when it took part in an amphibious operation that captured the island of Java from the French. In 1812 at nineteen years old Trelawny, who was described as a mutinous sailor and frequently disciplined, left the navy without achieving an officer’s commission. At most he had obtained the rank of acting midshipman on a captured
French ship. After leaving the navy despite never having obtained the rank he decided to call himself Lieutenant Trelawny. In 1820 while living in Switzerland he reinvented himself again as Captain Trelawny, royal navy retired, as his allowance was equivalent to a captain’s pay of £300 per year.
Trelawny had discovered a book by Percy Bysshe Shelley and was already a reader of Lord Bryon’s work, when he met Edward Ellerker Williams and Thomas Medwin who were friends of both the romantic poets. Trelawny, despite being of lesser wealth and poorer education, was invited to join Percy and Mary Shelley and Lord Bryon at Pisa in Italy. Trelawny became a companion to Mary Shelley when Percy tired of the endless society partying. Trelawny’s tales of swashbuckling adventures entertained Lord Bryon. In one of his stories he claimed to have deserted from the Royal Navy at India to become a pirate, fighting many a duel for his love of a girl named Zella. Bryon employed Trelawny to captain his own ship the Bolivar until it was sold to pay off Bryon’s debts. Upon the death of Percy Shelley, it was Trelawny who arranged the funeral, set his affairs in order and financed his widow Mary’s return to England. They remained friends. Trelawny joined Lord Bryon, travelling to Greece to join the rebellion against the Turkish rule of the Ottoman Empire and to fight for Greek independence. Trelawny became leader of a band of rebels while Bryon rented a house there and died of fever in 1824. Trelawny put the affairs of his friend in order then continued to fight in the wellpublicised rebellion. He was able to raise money to buy and smuggle guns with the aid of two British secret agents who when bribed by a Greek warlord shot him in an assassination attempt.

Edward John Trelawny Trelawny returned to England and despite his dyslexia wrote a fictional account of his life, Adventures of a Younger Son. His landlord, Charles Armitage Brown and Mary Shelley edited the book. It was published anonymously in 1831 to great acclaim and London society clamoured to know whom the author was. Trelawny became the darling of London society and many a biographer mistook the story of Trelawny’s piracy for fact. By then it had become hard to discern what was real and what was a dinner party tale. Trelawny was considered to be the preeminent expert on Percy Shelley and Lord Bryon and in 1858 he published Recollections of the Last Days of Shelley and Byron. In 1878 he published the two volume Records of Shelley and Byron.
an eccentric character with an adventure story to tell. His body was an unexplained jigsaw puzzle of scars from knife and gunshot wounds. He was seen riding his pony and trap to Shoreham beach for a regular seaside swim. He died aged eighty-eight in 1881,but as pre-arranged in 1822, his ashes were buried in Rome next to Percy Shelley’s grave. Trelawny’s grave marker bears a quote from Shelley’s poem “Epitaph”. SOUTHWICK’S MIRACULOUS ESCAPE The day a Valiant jet crashed- A new Southwick Society Exhibition SATURDAY mornings MAY 28TH TO JULY 9TH 10.30 to 12.30 66 years ago, at lunch time on 11 May 1956, Southwick suffered a tragedy of the Cold War when an RAF Valiant bomber crashed on the railway line just south of Croft Avenue.
Tragic though it was, the crash could have been a major catastrophe. If the aircraft had crashed a little to the north it could have obliterated Manor Hall Road Junior Boys School and adjacent houses. A little to the east or west it would have crashed on to houses and just to the south there were more houses and the busy harbour where the new Brighton B power station and major port installations were under construction; many people could have
been killed or injured.
Southwick had had a miraculous escape. Sadly of the crew, the pilot, navigator and a civilian engineer were killed. Only the co-pilot was able to eject, he landed near the railway station and survived. What was a Valiant bomber doing over Southwick and why did it crash?
The Southwick Society are holding a major new exhibition in the Manor Cottage Heritage Centre, Southwick Street, about the crash.
Using the official accident investigation reports, newspaper articles and eyewitness accounts they have put together a record of what happened to an almost new Valiant bomber on Friday 11th May 1956 and how it affected the local people and community. The exhibition is accompanied by two books about the incident, Southwick’s Miraculous Escape by Mary Candy and Those Valiant Men by John Young.

Two common Elbow Problem Jenefer Davys, osteopath at SOC, describes how to recognise two common elbow problems and offers some advice on pain management. 1. “Tennis Elbow” – this is felt on the outside of the elbow and sometimes the lower arm or back of the hand. It indicates inflammation of the tendons of the muscles that extend the wrist and the fingers. As well as tennis, other repeated actions may cause it, eg using a screwdriver, trying to open tight jars, typing or using a computer mouse.
use a wrist rest with keyboard; try an ergonomic mouse; try an electric screwdriver…)
2. “Golfer’s Elbow” – this is felt on the inside of the elbow and indicates inflammation of the tendons of muscles that flex the wrist and fingers (bend them towards your palm). Apart from golf, other strenuous or repetitive actions may cause it, eg carrying heavy shopping bags, rock climbing, playing the piano. The medical terms are lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) and medial epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow) because the inflamed tendons attach to one of the epicondyles, two bony protrusions on the lower end of the upper arm bone (humerus).
•
Wearing an elbow support/strap with an integral pressure pad; place it about 5cm below the elbow around the forearm, with the pad on the outside for tennis elbow and the inside for golfer’s. These can be purchased from many chemists.
•
Resting the arm and avoiding activities that aggravate the pain.
Manual therapy such as osteopathy Is often beneficial along with exercises to help prevent recurrence. Whether you develop tennis or golfer’s elbow can depend on your posture and how you use your body as a whole. It’s important if you have any pain in the elbow and/or into the fingers, that you check with a medical professional that there are no problems with your neck, spine or anything else that could be the root cause.
·
Cold pack on the area of discomfort may help reduce inflammation (alternating cold and hot compresses may help when pain is chronic or long-term)
For treatment and advice with our caring team of osteopaths, book an appointment at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre on 01273 567654 or info@shorehamosteo.co.uk.

Well fear not, Adur East Lions is here to help you!
We need Teddy’s (or soft toys), of all shapes and sizes that are in good condition for our Teddy Tombola at our annual Family Fun Day in Buckingham Park, which this year is on July 3rd. If you can help us with our Teddy drive, please bring them along to our stall at the monthly Artisan Market in Shoreham High Street. Alternatively, we’d be happy to collect them. WIf you don’t have any Teddy’s but still want to help at the Family Fun Day - maybe making cakes for our tea and cake tent, helping serve tea & cake, putting up gazebo’s, directing traffic, herding donkeys, manning stalls or simply being on litter picking duty, we’re always looking for extra helpers to make this Fun Day the great event we want it to be. Just get in touch, we’d love to hear from you!

Sherlock Holmes Returns Life is returning to normal following the COVID years, but what has been a constant during this time is our love of books. People have turned to much-loved authors and
Sherlock Holmes remains a fascinating and enduring character in the history of British crime writing and the retelling of the stories through blockbuster films and award winning TV series is a testament to this. Mike Bryan, Director of publishers Baker Street Press, takes up the story: ‘There has always been a high level of interest in the ‘consulting detective’ and we felt the time was right to launch the ‘Sherlock Holmes Deluxe Classics Series’.
The complete ‘Sherlock Holmes Classics’ collection.
https://ccsbooks.co.uk/product-category/ baker-street-classics-sherlock-holmes/
‘This collection of nine hardback books is a retro-inspired full set of Arthur Conan Doyle’s wonderful tales of Holmes at work,’ he commented. ‘Originally serialised in newspapers and magazines in the late nineteenth century, Conan Doyle’s famous collection of detective stories transport the reader back to Holmes’s bustling Victorian London, the misty moors of Dartmoor, the dizzying heights of the Reichenbach Falls and the cosy living room of 221B Baker Street,’ he added.
'They feature the original cover illustrations from editions of the 1920’s, and would enhance anybody’s bookshelves,’ concluded Bryan.
‘I am blown away by the quality and our members will be dazzled by this,’ commented Ian Bennett, head of the Sherlock Society. ‘I have all kinds of variety in my Sherlockian collection, but I can say without doubt, these are the finest I have seen.’ Launched by Baker Street publishers, the complete ‘Sherlock Holmes Deluxe Classics’ collection of nine books is available from Waterstones and all good bookshops, or buy direct for home delivery via this link: Have a local editorial item? email: insidemags@gmail.com

Photography Exhibitions I have just purchased my ticket for a photographic event in May that, for me, not to be missed.
The Photo London Exhibition was established in 2004 but only ran for 3 years. It was relaunched in 2015 and has since been held at Somerset House. It is a showcase for photographic sales galleries to show and sell photographers’ work with curated exhibitions film and projected images.
Somerset House is a wonderful venue and the light coloured Italian stone facades give a neutral coloured backdrop which works well with splashes of strong colour in the foreground to make a photograph which attracts the eye. Events like this can provide inspiration for photographers. Classic photoand talks by famous photographers.
I have been to this annual event a few times and it is a really great day out. Somerset House is a warren of rooms on several levels of the main building plus a temporary pavilion constructed in the courtyard exhibiting photographs inside and displaying large photographs outside. This provides visitors with photo opportunities of their own. I have graphs from the past are displayed for sale, some for many thousands of pounds but plenty of up and coming photographers are also showcased.
published images here that I hope give a flavour of the event. The basement provides a low light area which is ideal for the showing of
Last year each individual exhibition had a QR code on the wall which visitors could scan ith their smart phone to be taken to a website which gave a greater insight into the work of that photographer or of the gallery that represented them. I will finally be restarting my workshops in Shoreham this month (April) so if you wish to be added to my mailing list please email me: steveboylephotos@gmail.com

Residents to see how the Southwick Estate could be transformed Adur residents will hear more about the plans to breathe new life into the Southwick Estate at public consultation events in May. Design boards will also show different aspects of the estate from the ground up so they can get a feel for how the area could be transformed.
The Southwick Estate lies between the railway station and Shoreham Port and contains 248 homes across 13 blocks, which are owned and managed by Adur Homes, as well as two commercial properties owned by third parties.
Significant work and investment is needed to bring the blocks on the estate up to the decent homes standard and the scheme is a priority for Adur.
A project team has been working with residents since July last year to review options including refurbishment, or a partial or full redevelopment of the area. Adur District Council would like people living on the Southwick Estate to set out their priorities for the area and have their say on its future by getting involved with the consultation process so their views are heard and considered as plans to improve the area move forward. Initial options were presented to tenants and leaseholders in October and November at pop-up events in different locations on the estate, and at an exhibition at Southwick Community Centre.
Residents asked questions about parking, usable green space, the cost of any proposed plans, timescale and ensuring that everyone on the estate got a fair deal.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the impact his iconic Ground Force series had on the nation. I get asked a lot about Ground Force, the TV programme I fronted for five years from 1997, and the impact it made on gardening, as a whole. To be honest, I don’t like to talk up my achievements too much, but I will admit this was one of the real successes I will always look back on with fondness. That’s not so much for any personal reasons, and I certainly don’t think my horticultural knowledge was called on in the same way it has been with other gardening shows I’ve done over the years. Instead, the pride I have for Ground Force stems from a place where we managed to start something of an outdoors revolution.
Not only were we at the forefront of a new brand of reality TV (that wasn’t a talent show or a singing contest). It was in people’s homes, in their lives, and focused on the idea that people could come together from all over to make a difference. All the people involved in Ground Force came from different backgrounds and offered very different ideas in the process of transforming a chosen family’s back garden, but it worked. My role was probably one of the easiest – almost just an anchor man pulling the whole thing together, however clumsily! The show’s success provoked a whole raft of other home reality programmes where people’s dreams came true… usually. And I say that on the basis of some of the awkward transformations Changing Rooms embarked on!
