SHOREHAM FOOTBALL CLUB Club Statement on its Climate Change Programme-
Stuart Slaney - Chairman “I believe that it is everyone’s duty to ensure we contribute, no matter how small, to helping climate change. This is a real problem that we can’t ignore. With Shoreham FC being a prominent figure in the local community and on the non-league stage we can use our position to encourage other football clubs and supporters to join us in making a difference. With the clubs ongoing commitment to carbon neutrality and our membership of the United Nations Sports for Climate Action Framework. We have to look at every aspect of the day to day running of the football club and take note of what impact we have on the planet. Firstly, we tackled all the really, quick, and small wins such as removing the use of all plastic bottles and moving to Eco-Friendly BPA free plant-based bottles, swapping out all pint and half pint plastic glasses to biodegradable PP Flexy Plastic beer tumblers and introducing recycling bins around the ground. The next steps were: To start removing all the old tube lighting Inside Shoreham & Southwick February 2021
around the ground and its buildings and replacing them with low consumption LED lighting. Currently we have replaced 38 fittings, this obviously comes at an initial cost but the savings of consumption and practically zero maintenance over a period of time is well worth it. We then moved our focus on to the catering side of things. We replaced all takeaway products such as polystyrene plates and cups with bio recyclable catering products and introducing an optional vegan menu. Which means we can reduce the amount of meat products we purchase for resale. We are also looking at the areas where we can’t directly affect such as fans traveling to our home matches. Everyone that enters the stadium has a carbon footprint and getting to and from the ground adds to this. So, we are proud to introduce our off-setting carbon footprint programme. If a fan travels to the ground via public transport and can produce their travel ticket at the gate and for people who travel to the ground via bicycle or electric car and again can prove their mode of transport then the club will donate a percentage of their gate ticket money to off-set their carbon footprint
7 MORTGAGE TIPS THAT COULD SAVE YOU MONEY IN 2021 As a new year starts, it’s a great time to review your mortgage. It’s a step that could save you money now and over the full term of your mortgage. Even a relatively small saving each month can add up over the years you’ll be paying a mortgage. 1. Check when your current deal ends: If you currently have a mortgage deal in place, make sure you know when it ends. Usually, you’ll be moved on to your lender’s Standard Variable Rate (SVR) at the end of a deal. This is typically a higher interest rate than you’d receive if you searched for a new deal. Despite this, according to Experian, up to 44% of the UK’s 10.8 million mortgages are likely to be paying a provider’s SVR. Moving from an SVR could save you thousands of pounds. 2. Review the interest rate you’re paying: Interest rates are low, but even a small difference has an impact over the term of your mortgage. If you had a £200,000 mortgage over a 20-year term at 3.5%, for example, your monthly repayments would be £1,160. Over the full term, the interest would add up to £78,459. However, an interest reduction of just 1% to 2.5% would mean total interest adds up to £54,379. You’d save over £24,000 by switching.
£150,000 over 25 years with an interest rate of 2.5% and made a regular monthly overpayment of £200, you’d pay off your mortgage seven years and three months earlier. You’d also save over £16,000 in interest alone. 5. Reduce the term: Reducing the term of the mortgage will mean you pay less interest and own you home outright sooner. However, you need to make sure you can keep up with the higher monthly costs as you won’t have the flexibility that overpayment offers. 6. Get your home valued: If you’ve lived in your home for a while, it’s likely the value has increased. According to the November Halifax House Price Index, prices increased by 7.6% in the last 12 months alone. As prices rise, the equity you own within your home also increases. If you fall into a new loan to value (LTV) band, this can give you access to lower interest rates. 7. Pay fees upfront: If you’re taking out a new mortgage deal, you’ll usually be offered the opportunity to pay fees upfront or select a deal with no fees. While it can be tempting to reduce costs now by choosing a deal with no fees, this will usually mean the interest rate is higher. If you calculate this difference over the term of the deal, you’ll often save money by paying fees upfront.
3. Check your insurance policies: If you have buildings and content insurance separate from your mortgage, it can pay to bundle them together. Choosing one provider could mean they offer you a discount that will ensure your home is protected for less.
A mortgage is often one of the biggest expenses we have. If you’re taking out a mortgage, whether you’re moving home or your current deal is finishing, working with us can help you reduce the cost. Please get in touch, to discuss your mortgage needs.
4. Make overpayments if possible: Making overpayments on your mortgage can reduce the amount of interest you pay and mean you are mortgage-free sooner. If you had a mortgage of

Community Works is a charity connecting community organisations, people and businesses to build a better community for everyone. Every year, our Volunteer Centre helps hundreds of local people find Thank you! Hello and welcome back to Inside Volunteering. Firstly, thanks a million to everyone who got in touch to offer their help and to all of you volunteering your time and talents to help our community through these difficult times. So many people are getting involved, in so many different ways. Your kindness and generosity make all the difference.
I’m Carole Claridge, the Volunteering Adviser for Worthing & Adur and a volunteer myself. If you’d like to know more about volunteering in your local community, get in touch. I’d love to help you get started. Calling all bookkeepers and accountants! This month we’re keen to hear from those of you with finance experience. Have you ever thought about volunteering as a Treasurer for a local charity or community group?
Every local charity and community group needs a Treasurer to take care of their funds. If you’ve got bookkeeping or accountancy experience, it’s a fantastic way to make a difference in your local community. And you don’t need to be fully qualified - small groups, with modest funds, have simple finances. Acting as a charity Treasurer can be valuable experience for those working towards qualifications and looking to progress their finance career. And if you’re retired, it’s a great way to stay Inside Shoreham & Southwick February 2021
connected and meet new people. Every group will have different needs depending on their size and how they raise funds. Volunteer Treasurers in very small charities are hands-on doing the books, while in larger charities their role is about overseeing the financial processes and advising the committee on financial matters. Typically, Treasurers volunteer about 8-10 hours a month of their time - including attending committee meetings. And there’s plenty of flexibility to enable you to fit the role around your other commitments. There’s lots to choose from Many local charities and community groups are looking for a new volunteer Treasurer right now - so there’s sure to be a role to fit your interests and experience. Here are a few examples to illustrate the variety on offer. Apron Creative: A community arts and crafts initiative in Shoreham offering intergenera-tional arts and crafts workshops and cultural heritage events. BroadWater Community Association: Runs the Parish Rooms in Broadwater Street West - the hub of village life. Freedom Power Chairs: Designs, maintains, repairs, services and hires out mobility aids from a workshop in Worthing. Men Walk Talk: Aims to improve men’s mental and physical health by getting them involved in a local walking group. cont/d page 34

Multimillion pound refresh of St Richard’s Hospital laundry to double output, create jobs and reduce carbon emissions A multi-million pound refresh of the laundry and linen department at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester will boost productivity, create 25 new jobs and reduce carbon Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is investing £5.9 million over three years to replace all the equipment, improve efficiency and provide new capacity for the laundry to serve greater demand and potentially more hospitals or other local businesses. “Our laundry team washes more than four million items per year and we’re really pleased to move forward with this significant investment to replace and improve all the equipment,” said director of Estates and Facilities at Western Sussex Hospitals (WSHT) David McLaughlin. “A hospital laundry has operated from Broyle Road in Chichester since before the NHS was founded and, although our equipment is not that old, much of it has now become outdated and inefficient as washing technology has evolved. “For example, cleaning nearly 90,000 bed sheets, scrubs and other items every week produces more than 800 tonnes of C02 a year – that’s around 13% of the entire hospital’s carbon footprint! And given our prominent position in the community, we take our environmental responsibility very seriously and are committed to doing all we can to reduce our impact.”
ABOVE - THE ST RICHARD’S LAUNDRY DEPARTMENT PICTURED IN 1950.
Four options were considered to improve the laundry and linen service, including outsourcing it to a more efficient, largerscale commercial operator. WSHT, however, is planning on becoming a larger trust in April by merging with Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH), providing hospital decisionmakers with a new perspective as they plan for the future. Chief finance officer, Karen Geoghegan, said: “When we proposed the merger of our two trusts we promised we would continue to invest in our services and our people, and the expansion and improvement of our laundry service is exactly the type of development we had in mind.
cont/d page 22 Inside Shoreham & Southwick February 2021
22 “It’s better for our patients, better for our staff, better for our finances abetter for the environment too. For instance, we believe we can more than double the amount of laundry we do and at the same time reduce carbon emissions by at least 18%. We will also be sourcing the majority of our water from a local borehole.” The importance of infection control, retaining control over quality and ensuring the safety and welfare of patients and staff were also critical considerations in determining the future of the laundry service. The laundry investment programme follows another multi-million pound improvement project to develop a new specialist kitchen at St Richard’s and launch a new patient catering service across the trust that has since won national recognition from celebrity chef Prue Leith and the
WSHT and BSUH are proposing to merge from 1 April 2021. The two trusts have been working in partnership with a shared leadership team for nearly four years, during which time WSHT became the first acute hospital trust to be awarded Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) in all key inspection areas. At the same time, BSUH, with hospitals in Haywards Heath and Brighton, became the fastest improving acute hospital trust in England and is now rated Good overall and Outstanding for caring by the CQC.

Looking Forward I usually try to match the subject of my photo articles with the time of year but for a locked down February I thought I’d look forward to the possibility of a Summer holiday to cheer us all up. I have often written about photo projects, collections of pictures on a theme that expand on a story, an idea or an observation and there is no better time to pursue a photographic project than when you are in the unfamiliar surroundings of a holiday destination which can provide inspiration for your creativity. What do you see around you that you don’t see in your home town ? What about the architecture or the landscape ? The colour of the sea and the sand ? Do the local people and the tourists act or dress differently ? What about the wildlife, the skies, the plants ? These are all potential photographic subjects.
bolder in recent years. When they are in the water they look fairly unremarkable but they have to be transported to and from the beachand can often be larger than the person carrying them so I began documenting this bizarre but colourful journey. The images here were taken in Croatia and Sicily so there is no need to complete a project at one location, it can take years to slowly add images to the set. I have several ongoing projects that slowly expand as I see suitable subjects to record with my camera or my smart phone. Rampion Wind Farm off the Sussex coast. An informal consultation has been opened seeking feedback on initial proposals to expand the Rampion Wind Farm off the Sussex coast.
Rampion 2 could create clean, renewable electricity to power over one million homes in the UK in addition to Rampion’s existing generation. Feedback from this first consultation will help refine more detailed proposals which will be prepared for a second consultation later this year. An offshore ‘Area of Search’ is being assessed to identify the optimum site for a maximum of up to 116 turbines, the same number as the existing Rampion Offshore Wind Farm. A subsea export cable is proposed to bring the power ashore under Climping beach, with an underground onshore cable route required to bring the power inland to connect to the national transmission grid at Bolney, where three potential sites are being considered for a new substation.
Inside Shoreham & Southwick February 2021
Cllr Daniel Humphreys, Leader of Worthing Borough Council, said: “I very much welcome these proposals in principle to expand the hugely successful Rampion offshore wind farm. The existing site brings enormous environmental benefits to our area and is a very visible sign of the benefits of developing our growing green and maritime tech sector.” You can visit Rampion’s ‘virtual village hall’ exhibition and give your feedback from 14th January to 11th February 2021:

Benefits of Exercise!! Tania, administrator and patient at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre shares the benefits of exercise, osteopathy and a decent pair of hiking shoes! As dog owners, we cover a few miles on our daily walks around beautiful Shorehamby-Sea; pounding the pavements, hiking up The Downs, along the beach or river; across a variety of terrain. For a while now, I have had issues with my lower back, neck, knees and an episode of plantar fasciitis. Exercise certainly helps but it is not exercise alone that can ease my symptoms. Walking, yoga and osteopathy have supported me hugely. The holistic approach of osteopathy has helped me understand the interdependence of the muscles of the body and how poor movement and posture have had significant impact on my pain. The combination of manipulation, massage, advice and specific exercises have been invaluable. Alex Marek, Osteopath, is a marathon runner and has researched the importance of wearing the correct footwear, “There could be many contributing factors to any injury … choosing the right shoes is essential.” (previous article Inside Shoreham). Unfortunately, my faithful, battered and broken-laced hiking shoes are coming to the end of their days and in preparation for this sad event, I’ve been trying alternative footwear. After a few weeks, I noticed my aches and pains had worsened, so decided to replace the broken lace in my old faithful shoes and just keep using them until they gave up on me. Inside Shoreham & Southwick February 2021
It has been two weeks now and my knees and back seem so much stronger. I feel more relaxed when walking and can get out of the sofa groan-free! I continue to do the exercises and stretches that Jenny Davys, Osteopath, advised and have osteopathy treatment every 6-8 weeks to keep the machine oiled. Everyone is different. I feel that I am beginning to understand my body more and what I need to stay active for hopefully years to come. My old shoes may not have long left in this world, but at the moment they are still giving me the support and comfort I need. My quest for the replacement hiking shoes continues! Children’s book launched to tell tale of ocean plastic pollution A children’s fictional book by a West Sussex native highlighting ocean plastic pollution, will see profits going to a charity protecting seas from plastic.
Richard Shore, who now lives in Co. Waterford, Ireland, created The Tangled Tuna in the Hurrahtum Adventures! series during the pandemic.Ideal as a bedtime story, it focuses on a girl (Lucy) who has adventures when she shouts the magic word “Hurrahtum” – which makes a cove and boat appear. In the eBook, Lucy rescues tuna caught in a discarded fishing net, known as ghost fishing, whereby lost and abandoned fishing gear remains in the ocean, continuing to catch fish and other animals. Ghost gear, which causes ghost fishing, is expected to remain in the oceans for hundreds of years, gradually breaking into harmful microplastics.Approximately 640,000 tonnes of nets, lines, pots and traps used in commercial fishing enter the ocean every year. Richard, who grew up in Shoreham-bySea, is passionate about the ocean and surfing, and wanted to make a difference with the book. He’s donating 50 per cent profits of book sales to Plastic Oceans UK – a nonprofit organisation whose mission is to stop plastic reaching the ocean within a generation. Profits raised will help the charity to support their Youth Outreach

programmes for 11 – 25s, empowering underrepresented young people to develop their own voice on the issues relating to ocean threats. Richard said: “We love going to the beach as a family and enjoying the sea, but not with plastic there! “So I wanted to do something positive. I wrote The Tangled Tuna to highlight what’s happening in our world’s oceans, and inspire people to do what they can. “The book is vibrantly illustrated, and there’s an exciting and inventive end to Lucy’s adventure.” Kavina Upadhyay-Fear, Head of Inclusion & Outreach at Plastic Oceans UK, said: “At Plastic Oceans UK, we are very grateful to be able to continue working towards our mission during the Covid-19 pandemic – recognising that our work would not be possible without the support of generous cont/d page 30

TIME TO HAVE SOME FUN! The days are getting longer and the members of Adur East Lions are keeping everything crossed that they will be able to continue with the events planned this year, not only so the local community can have some fun at long last but also so that funds can be raised to support great local service projects. The Lions were very lucky in December as they were able to attend the Southwick and Shoreham Markets and also managed four nights with the Sleigh plus Father Christmas around the streets socially distancing collecting funds. Many thanks to Focus group and other Friends of Lions for supporting these efforts. Lion President Pearl Boyce said “We always find our local community is generous to us knowing in turn it is put to good use. However, we were all truly astounded by the amazing amount of over £3350 that we collected in such a short time. Also it gave all our members a tremendous boost to see so many children and adults alike enjoying a visit from Santa and his Sleigh.” Inside Shoreham & Southwick February 2021
Upcoming events are the Donkey Derby and Classic Vehicle Rally on 6 June and a charity golf day on 27 May – see below. In earlier editions of Inside Shoreham. the Adur East Lions have raised awareness of LIBRA, a charity dedicated to raising money for leukaemia research. The Lions have also formed a ground breaking partnership with Brain Tumour Research. Sadly, brain tumours kill more children and adults than any other cancer. However, historically only 1% of cancer research spending has been allocated to this disease. We are organising a charity day at Worthing Golf Club on 27 May, which includes a round of golf and a two-course lunch. Please come and support the Lions on that day. Further details can be obtained from liondavidsluys@gmail. com Also available at £5.00 are partnership support pins, shown below. They can be obtained by contacting the same email address. Sam’s experience as a volunteer Treasurer Sam Singleton is a volunteer treasurer for Home-Start Arun, Worthing and Adur - a local charity that offers parents the support they need to give their child the best start in life. As an employee of the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity, Sam is experienced in charity work. However, he felt that volunteering for another organisation would teach him new skills and assist with his professional development.”Home-Start is very different to my ˜day job” but gives me an alternative viewpoint of charities that rely heavily on volunteers and provide services directly to beneficiaries,” says Sam. As a treasurer he studies operational reports and offers advice to the charity’s staff and board, which could be related to funding, improving services, future opportunities, or risk planning. At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic a budget meeting involving Sam brought about swift changes to fundraising priorities, which has resulted in Home-Start Arun, Worthing and Adur being in a much stronger financial position. “I always suffered from a lack of self-esteem.” However, being a volunteer treasurer has boosted my confidence. It’s an environment in which I can share my
knowledge and witness a positive effect, which in turn gives me the confidence that I am good at what I do.” For younger people considering a Treasurer role Sam offers the following advice: “Not many people my age (32) would even consider being a Treasurer. However, just because you lack the perceived experience of an elder, you have a viewpoint and a lived experience that means you can contribute something different, that will improve the quality of any Board. That should give you the confidence that your opinion is valid.” Interested? Get in touch Email a Volunteering Advisor volunteercentre@bhcommunityworks.org.uk Phone a Volunteering Advisor 831069

Ricky Dale releases new ghost story with a difference With his fifth novel, “I knew the bride when she used to Rock n Roll,” Ricky Dale has created a ghost story with a difference. Based largely upon true happenings, Dale has no need to run the gamut of pastiche and pulp to parody - which is sometimes true of novels in this genre. Instead, this novel is an original work but one that isn’t overtly “scary”. One that some may describe as “the most charming and enjoyable emotional clout you are ever likely to undergo...in this life!” Undeniably shocking; unbelievably captivating; indisputably ghostly: “I knew the bride when she used to Rock n Roll,” could be described as “Poltergeist meets the Sixth Sense”, written with such badass zeal that it lightens up the darkness of the novel’s nature and leaves its fictional reality to the readers own interpretation. Author Ricky Dale was born in England and raised in West Africa and North America. A former musician, Ricky’ singing career began in 1959 and he became known for his individual style and heartfelt rendering of ballads, and the contrast of his wild Rock ‘n Roll. He once duetted with the sheer genius Danny Kaye and performed with international crooners like the great Johnnie Ray. He was also MD of several innovative companies in the West of England for 21 years, but now spends his time writing. His previous novels have included his Limberlost trilogy; a semi-autobiographical series which takes the reader on a journey from Inside Shoreham & Southwick February 2021
snowbound northern Ontario to the heights of Manhattan across a 100-year period, and Cloudburst - a uniquely controversial insight into the fact-based account of lovers Dahlia Carriera and Sandra Comanescu together with a rebranding of Cosa Nostra. Ricky Dale’s Books are available from Amazon, Waterstones and other online booksellers.

Valentines Pancakes it’s pancake day tuesday, 16th February in the UK and this means the celebration of the little round, flat pancake¦”. much like the Jewish passover celebration, part of the reason we celebrate Shrove Tuesday is to clean the cupboards of tired old bits of produce such as flour and eggs, it’s a Spring clean for your home if you like, not that anyone needs an excuse to make pancakes. British pancakes are more like a traditional French crepe than their thicker American cousins and whilst I enjoy both if i’m totally honest, there’s nothing I prefer more than the honeyed hues of maple syrup dripping down the sides of a towering stack of rich, thick buttermilk pancakes.. I thought that these would make a wonderfully indulgent sweet breakfast treat for the one you love on Valentines Day. valentines buttermilk pancakes I am very excited and proud to announce that I have become a food ambassador for Lincolnshire Co-operative.
