Interest rates are rising for the first time in more than a decade, and it may be affecting your mortgage repayments.

With uncertainty around how high interest rates will go, it’s not surprising that many homeowners are worried about their ability to keep up with repayments. According to a report in the Financial Reporter, 48% of homeowners are worried about how they’ll manage. If you have concerns, don’t bury your head in the sand. What to do if you’re worried about meeting mortgage payments now

If you have a variable- or tracker-rate mortgage, your repayments may already have increased. If these increases mean your budget is under pressure, you should contact your lender. It could prevent you from falling into arrears and potentially losing your home.

Among the options a lender may consider are:

• A payment holiday: If you’re experiencing shortterm challenges repaying your mortgage, such as your income stopping temporarily, a payment holiday may be right for you.

• Extend your mortgage term: It may also be possible to change your mortgage term, such as extending how long it will take to pay your mortgage back. While you’ll be paying your mortgage for longer, it can reduce your repayments now.

• Switch to paying interest only: If you have a repayment mortgage, switching to an interestonly mortgage may be an option. As you’ll only be paying the interest, rather than reducing the debt,

your repayments will fall.

While these options can provide short-term financial security, you should understand how they could affect the long term too. They could, for instance, mean you pay a higher amount of interest overall or that it takes you longer to pay off your mortgage.

Creating a plan to cope with future rises in your mortgage repayments

There’s a lot of speculation about how much interest rates will rise and what it means for homeowners. So, even if you’re financially secure now, it’s natural to worry about your future.

If your mortgage deal has ended or is almost finished, securing a new deal could help you access a better rate of interest.

If your mortgage deal has already ended, you will usually be paying your lender’s standard variable rate. This typically isn’t competitive, and shopping around for a better deal can make financial sense.

For homeowners with an existing mortgage deal, you can often lock in a new one up to six months in advance. So, it’s worth checking your current deal and being proactive to provide you with certainty and potentially benefit from lower rates.

Please contact us on 01273 774855 or email advice@pembrokefs.co.uk if you would like more information and quote reference PFSIS.

As a mortgage is secured against your home or property, it could be repossessed if you do not keep up mortgage repayments. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Equity released from your home will be secured against it. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.

The Shoreham Kyanizing Timber Controversy

In 1828, John Howard Kyan placed a block of oak treated with the anti dry rot formula he had invented, into a fungus pit in Woolwich, London.

It was a three-year experiment run for the Admiralty in which in 1831 when the block was removed, it was found to be in the same condition as when it was first laid. Treated with Kyan’s formula the block had seemingly proved to be resistant to decay. Kyan patented his anti-rot solution in 1832 and in 1836 sold his rights to his Anti Dry Rot Company with parliament raising £500,000 to build the company works on the London docks.

In 1843 however, William Prichard the Superintendent of Pier Works at Shoreham Harbour published a report that questioned the efficiency of ‘Kyanizing’ as method of preserving timber. Letters of dispute were sent to the editor of ‘The Civil Engineer And Architects Journal’. In summary, Mr Prichard had initially stated that at Shoreham Harbour he’d removed from a pier a piece of oak that had been ‘Kyanized, but after only four years it was like a honeycomb, completely eaten away by the Tereo Navalis.’ This is a saltwater mollusc commonly known, as the Navy shipworm. In reply, Mr Taswell Thompson, Secretary of the Anti Dry Rot Company wrote to the journal to dispute the report stating, ‘if not contradicted, it may injure the reputation of a very valuable discovery.’

Mr Prichard responded with a letter setting out the published minutes of a meeting at the Institution Of Civil Engineers in 1842 in which the Kyanizing of Timber was discussed. An engineer had said ‘the method was imperfect.’ Another engineer had claimed to have ‘immersed timber in

the Kyan solution for two or three days which was double the period allowed by the patentee.’ A third claim was that ‘fresh batches of Kyan solution,’ were mixed up more frequently than was supposed to be required.’ Mr Prichard stated that Mr Thompson was present at the meeting but ‘did not contradict the statements, if untrue’ and did not challenge the published minutes. Mr Thompson obtained letters of certification by witnesses from Shoreham. The first letter was dated 22nd of August 1843 and was signed by J. B Balley, ship builder, William Tate, Timber Merchant and Thomas Thornton, Harbour Master. They stated they had inspected the east pier of Shoreham harbour in which the timber had been

The Shoreham Kyanizing Timber Controversy

Kyanized and had found no symptom of decay. However in contradiction to this statement, they also wrote the pier was ‘slightly touched by the worm, just above the sand.’

Robert Burt and William Ratcliff signed a second letter dated the 29th of August 1843. They had been carpenters at Shoreham Harbour for the previous six years and confirmed that no Kyanized wood had ever been removed from the pier. ‘We can also state positively that the lower wailings are formed alone of beech.’ This contradicted the assertion they were made of oak as Mr Prichard had claimed in his report. The journal’s editor judged ‘we cannot allow this controversy to be continued unless the communications be paid for as advertisements.’ Mr Prichard resigned from his post at Shoreham Harbour. However it was later proved ‘iron-fastenings’ used to

fix Kyanized timber in place had corroded and this in turn had made the wood brittle. In 1842 it had been claimed that at the Anti Dry Rot Company’s premises, upon dismantling one of the tanks, the ironwork had been found to be ‘destroyed and entirely covered with globules of mercury.’ Bichloride of mercury was used in the Kyan formula and the process involved immersing timber into a wooden tank filled with the solution in which the mercurial salt reacted with the wood fibres of the timber. On the 11th of January 1853 the Institution of Civil Engineers again questioned the efficiency of Kyanizing timber. The Kyan process became obsolete as mercurial salt was expensive and by that time Sir William Burnett had invented a cheaper way of preserving timber, using a combination of chloride of zinc and creosote.

Local Youth charity ESTEEM opens its doors to young adults and community groups this winter.

At ESTEEM we are thrilled to have successfully completed the redecoration and revitalisation of our building on Ham Road in Shoreham-By-Sea.

Thanks to the hard work of a wonderful team of volunteers, staff, local business supporters and young adults we have completely transformed our space: redecorating everywhere, repurposing rooms and even installing a new kitch en! (Very special thanks to HG Construction in particular for installing our new kitchen.)

As we’ve continued running our offer of group activities and 1-2-1 support for young adults, we’ve seen first-hand how the cost of living crisis has taken hold, with families and young adults struggling to keep up with bill payments, and cherished local community groups who do essential work being priced out and going into administration.

In this alarming context, we will now be opening our doors throughout our opening times to all local young adults aged 14-26. From Monday to Friday 10:30am-5:30pm our building will be a space for young people to hang out, play games, use free wifi, get on with work if needed and of course, stay warm.

We have also decided to offer our space to local community groups that need a room or two outside of our opening hours. Local groups doing good in our community can use our kitchen, activity room and meeting room for free or for a small donation if they

can afford it. You can find out more about our warmer spaces plan on our website: esteem.org.uk/warmspace

Along with opening up our building to the community, we will continue with our mission of creating space for young adults to thrive, offering free well-being and mentoring support, volunteering opportu nities and social activities to local young adults, all year around. Over the winter in particular we will also offer additional warm meals and trips for young adults, including a range of specific trips and warm food to young adults aged 14-17 who are on free school meals.

As ever, we rely on the support of the local community to power our work. So we’re asking for your help to keep everyone warm this winter. All donations are welcome. You can support us by covering our building costs for one three-hour session (£17), a day (£44) or even a week (£219). Or, you can show your support by crocheting a square to be a part of our big community blanket, which when completed will live in ESTEEM’s wellbeing room, ready to warm and comfort young adults when they need it.

A Christmas Carol

This December multi-award winning Wick Theatre Company gives us a sumptuous Christmas classic: “A Christmas Carol”. This is theatre which is full of grit and wit, creatively told as a feast for the senses combining the traditional story telling true to the piece and set in the time, creatively and beautifully told, to leave you warm with hope and festive spirit. Charles Dickens is a literary genius and a British institution, and most people who are familiar with his work will have heard of the novella “A Christmas Carol”, or read it, or seen one of the many incarnations of the film. What’s perhaps less known, is that Dickens was a social reformer, and the story itself is inspired by a dual threads of Christmas, and the publication ten months earlier of the “Second Report of the Children’s Employment Commission”. He was also inspired by his own life story, of having to give up school at the age of 12, pawn his books, and work in a rat infested shoe-blacking factory all because his father ended up in Debtor’s Prison. Dickens visited the appalling conditions of children working in the Cornish tin mines, and a Ragged School in London, aimed at the poorest and most destitute children. Dickens originally planned to publish an appeal to the people of England on behalf of these children but changed his mind, and lucky for us, wrote “A Christmas Carol” instead.

The tale tells of the cold hearted businessman who gets the fright of his life one Christmas Eve when he is visited by the ghost of his former partner Jacob Marley, followed by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. They help to hold up a mirror to his life and show him the world at large, and help to open his eyes and his heart to the suffering as well as the joy of life around him. The morals of kindness, community and generosity of both spirit and your own good fortune are timeless, and in the harshest of times, very relevant.

Celebrating the Christmas season had been growing in popularity during this time: the Victorian era, including the fairly new Christmas trees and a resurgence of Christmas carols. Dickens himself was interested in Christmas and had written other Christmas stories. This story crystalises the moral themes he so wanted to highlight, and the happiness with which people

had begun to celebrate Christmas. Never out of print since its publication 19 December 1843, it has clearly tapped into the culture and fabric of the British people: that kindness and goodness can win, that there is always hope, and a chance of redemption.

David Edgar’s play adaptation of this classic is fascinating, as it features as central characters Charles Dickens himself, alongside his best friend and editor: John Forster. Entirely truthfully, Dickens talks of wanting to write an exposé of the conditions of the poor, especially children. It gives us a wonderful insight into the creative mind of someone both inspired and appalled by what he had read, witnessed and experienced first-hand. We see the rich tapestry of Ebeneezer Scrooge’s story coming alive before our eyes.

Director Nettie Sheridan calls it “A gorgeous tale of redemption; with generosity, empathy and kindness at its core.” and is very excited to be bringing a cracking cast of almost 40 people, including children, to the Barn Theatre stage, at Southwick, near Brighton in December: with sumptuous costumes and Christmas carols being sung and played live. It’s on Wednesday 14 until Saturday 17 December at 7.45 each evening and booking in advance is very much recommended as it is very close to sold out. Book through the Wick Theatre website: www.wicktheatre.co.uk which takes you to Ticket Source or on 0333 666 3366 (transaction fee applies on telephone bookings) or email the Barn Theatre Box Office: barnboxoffice@ southwickcommunitycentre.org.uk for waiting list tickets.

God bless us, every one!

Observation

There is one essential skill that a photographer requires which is, in my opinion, even more important than technical knowledge of shutter speeds and apertures and that is observation, the art of seeing.

It is the hardest part of photography to teach although you can make suggestions to encourage students to develop this ability of heir own accord.

Sometimes a seemingly bland area or scene can be framed with a camera to extract something of interest.

The elements of my photograph here offer an unusual juxtaposition of unrelated objects, namely a repetitive line of stacked chairs leading the eye left to right to a ‘framed’ large pink flamingo acting as a visual full stop on the right. There are other pleasing visual elements in the background too. The geometric arrangement of one large rectangle in the bottom half of the image, a smaller rectangle above and a square on the right containing the oddity of the flamingo.

Also a box containing plants, constructed of horizontal slats which offer a contrast to

the vertical slats of the chair backs. The base rectangle is ‘crazy paved’ which adds pattern, the smaller rectangle above is a much paler colour but is pleasingly textured...and then there’s the window with that pink flamingo !

The upturned chair legs break the horizon tal line between the rectangles and the single chair at the end of the line to the right allows an unobstructed view of the window with a twist, yes, that incongruous flamingo.

All these individual details are not necessarily obvious to the eye at the time of taking but to me there was an obvious appeal which instantly drew me in. It’s the kind of scene which is easy to walk past if you don’t possess the art of seeingobservation.

Bertie made this calendar to share his work, and support the BTO who do amazing work conserving British bird species.

Bertie’s passion for wildlife started in the French Alps where he grew up. Now that the end of the year is approaching, I have decided to choose all my favorite photos from the year and make a calendar.”

Have you been Naughty or Nice this year??

Tis the season to be Jolly! And what’s more Jolly than a visit with Santa?

Each year Adur East Lions Club undertake a variety of Christmas activities across Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate.  This year, the Lions have arranged for Santa and his Sleigh to be at Southwick Christmas Market on Saturday 3rd December, where Santa will be giving out free toys to the local Children.  He’ll also be at the Shoreham Farmer’s Market on 10th December, again, giving out free toys and helping to put a smile on tiny faces.

We are really pleased to announce that for the second year in a row we will also be running a Santa’s Grotto at the Manor Cottage in Southwick (16/18 Southwick Street). Our elves are going to work especially hard to put up decorations and make it as festive as they can. If you’d like to bring your little ones along, there’s no booking required, just come along during our opening times (some queuing might occur during busy periods).  Entrance is £5 and all children will get a personal visit with Santa (mum’s and dads have your camera ready), and an age appropriate toy.  The Grotto at Manor Cottage will be open on Saturday 3rd December 11am to 3pm, Saturday 10th December 11am to 3pm, Sunday 11th December 11am to 3pm, Wednesday 14th December 2pm to 6pm, Saturday 17th December 11am to 3pm and finally Sunday 18th December 11am to 3pm.

Last but not least, and as ever, subject to the great British weather, we will also be helping Santa take his Sleigh around the streets of Southwick & Fishersgate, collecting door to door.  This is currently scheduled to take place each night starting on Monday 13th December. We have five different routes and if you want

to see if Santa is coming to your street, go to our Facebook page for further details at www.facebook.com/adureastlionsclub.com

If you have little ones, please bring them along and say hi, Santa is always keen to meet your children and find out if they’ve been naughty or nice!    As ever, if you’re interested in getting involved in your local Lions Club, you can get in touch with us via telephone on 0345 833 7356, Facebook, or through our website, just search “Adur East Lions Club”.

Give a lasting gift this Christmas – please read

Are you looking for a gift that will make a difference this year? How about becoming a Friend of St Mary’s?

It costs just £10 a year to support the maintenance and restoration of our magnificent church in the heart of Shoreham.

Loved by so many people, this architecturally important Norman church is a jewel in Shoreham’s crown. 900 years of Shoreham families have had their baptisms, weddings and funerals at St Mary de Haura. The churchyard is a popular place to sit on a sunny day as it’s the biggest green space in central Shoreham, popular with dog walkers and families too. The graves are tended by volunteers.

As you can imagine, this ancient building needs constant maintenance. Yet it

receives no funding from either the government or the Church of England to support its upkeep. In the late Middle Ages, the de Braose family used money from trading at Shoreham port to fund the upkeep, but after some years financial responsibility was transferred to the people of the town. Today, Friends membership is one way for the people of Shoreham to help fund the repairs and restoration needed to keep the doors of St Mary de Haura open for generations to come.

So please help if you can! St Mary’s currently has 130 Friends, yet the Shoreham population is over 50,000 people (2021 census). And there is a growing need for support: recent tree damage in Shoreham shows how wild the weather can be, and in 2023 a lightening strike caused £20,000 worth of damage. Membership of the Friends is not restricted to residents of Shoreham – Friends can join from all over the world, and often include people have been married in the church and moved away. Friends individual membership is just £10, whilst household (or family) membership costs £15, so please think about joining. Or maybe you’d like to give Friends membership as a gift. St Mary’s would be so grateful for your support this Christmas. Thank you.

It’s easy to join the Friends! Either set up a standing order or scan the QR code for a standing order form. Individual

The Grubby Gardeners bare all for charity

Following a two-year hiatus, and hot off the success of its RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden, horticultural charity, Perennial, is back with its cheeky Naked Gardening Calendar. As per previous years, the calendar shows the Grubby Gardeners, formed in 2014 as a group of volunteers fundraising for Perennial, baring all for the charity.

The calendar is, as always, all about a bit of fun, but there is a serious and important message behind it, which is to raise funds and awareness of the services Perennial offers.

Anita Bates, Director of Marketing and Fundraising from Perennial states: “A job in horticulture is hard, physical work and, despite the important contribution this makes to our collective wellbeing, jobs can be seasonal, attract low pay and people in horticulture do not always enjoy job security.

“Now, with the worst cost of living crisis in a generation, the spiralling cost of energy and in work debt at a level never seen before, the calls to our helpdesk are increasing. To gether we can help real peo ple through this crisis, but we can’t do this without the support of our volunteers and fundraisers.”

“Perennial was there for me in my hour of need and may well have saved my life. It sounds dramatic, but their calm guidance at a time when my life was in turmoil massively helped me.” - Peter, Landscaper

All profits from the sale will help Perennial to reach and support more people in the wonderful horticultural industry. The calendar is always popular with people looking for a charity option, and it makes a great stocking filler!

To find out more about the calendar and the work that Perennial does, please visit www.perennial.org.uk

The calendars retail at £10, and all profits go towards the charity Calendars can be purchased from the Perennial website https://shop.perennial.org.uk/products/ the-perennial-naked-gardeners-calendar-2023

Learn something new through volunteering

Welcome to Inside Volunteering. This month we’ve spoken to Mel, Volunteer Coordinator at Community Works, to see how volunteering is a great opportunity for lifelong learning.

Do you feel learning is one of the motivations for people to look at volunteering? Definitely. People volunteer for many reasons. It’s not only about getting work experience or supporting their education. Often people want to develop personally: building confidence, learning a new skill or being part of a particular interest that means a lot to them.

Can we learn from volunteers?

This is a big yes. Every volunteer brings their life experiences, skills, knowledge, and personality to their role. They share this with the people the organisation supports, as well as the other staff and volunteers at the organisation. What have you learnt from volunteering? Long before I became a Volunteer Coor dinator, I was in a different type of employment and came across a volunteering opportunity to mentor young people. I learnt about the charity environment, coaching

and mentoring. I also developed my empa thy, supportiveness and understanding of different backgrounds.

Everything I learnt had a big impact on my personal skills and brought about a change in career. You could say I have come full circle in relation to volunteering, and the circle is continuous in lifelong learning. If you’re interested in finding out what you can learn through volunteering, visit the Community Works website to see the cur rent volunteer roles available.

Volunteering is for everyone. Want to make a difference in your community? Community Works Volunteer Centre is here to help you get started. Visit volunteer.bhcommunityworks.org.uk to search for a local volunteer role.

Uckfield U12s vs Shoreham U12 Pirates

On an extremely wet, windy and at one point hailing Sunday morning, the Shoreham U12 Pirates paid a visit to play Uckfield in their first waterfall match. The pitch conditions were less than ideal and very waterlogged.

After a team talk in the visitors changing rooms, the Pirates ventured out onto the sodded pitch for a quick warmup session before being joined by the home team and the match kicked off on time at around 1000hrs.

Shoreham started the game with the kick-off and Uckfield were quick in on the attack and whilst the Pirates were able to put up a good defence Uckfield managed to put the ball over the top twice and score tries. This was followed by a third try before the Pirates manged to claw one back with a brilliant attacking line.

The fierce attacking of Uckfield worked well and they managed to turn over a number of rucks and made the Shoreham defence work hard. The persistence of Uckfield paid off once more as they manged to get the ball over the line for one more try before halftime making it 20-5 for the home team.

After a halftime break and individual team talks, the game was back on and Uckfield managed to get another quick two over the line.

The Pirates defence continued to be tested by the strong Uckfield side and they managed to hold the ball up the next time Uckfield got it over the line. However, this success was short lived and Uckfield fought on and managed to dot the ball over the line two more times making it 40-5.

The Pirates though soaking wet, muddy and tired with the weather conditions not improving continued to fight on and fought hard to get an other try bringing the score to 40-10, but Uckfield were quick to cancel that out by scoring a try of their own.

Not to be deterred the Pirates continued to put everything into the game and in the final play of the game got the ball down across the line for the final try bringing the final score to 45-15 at the final whistle.

Both sides played a good game and should be commended for the way in which they played and the effort that they put in given the pitch and weather conditions. Well done to all and con gratulations to the Uckfield U12s on their win.

Player of the match went to Ollie O

Whoosh… FOOSH!!

Jenny Davys, osteopath at SOC, explains what this fun-sounding but not very fun injury is, what might result and what to do if you succumb.

As we come into the wet, windy, icy part of the year, there’s always an increased danger of slips and trips. The Christmas ice rinks are hazardous… but a fall could happen on your doorstep. The result can be FOOSH – a “Fall Onto an OutStretched Hand” - as we instinctively put our hand out to stop ourselves bashing our heads! Apart from grazes and bruises, other issues can ensue:

1. Fracture (break) of wrist bones, forearm bones (radius or ulna), or even your collarbone as the forc es from your hand impacting the ground transfer through wrist to elbow to shoulder

2. Ligament sprain – twisting or torsion or overstretching of liga ments between the fingers, wrist or elbow are common

3. Tendon strain – as you overcon tract or overstretch the muscles in your wrist/fingers or elbow and shoulder, causing tears and damage to the tendons that attach them to the joints

4. Nerve damage

When injury first occurs it can be difficult to know how serious it is. Indications that you need medical help or hospital attention include:

Severe persistent pain and signs of shock

• Inability to move joints at all with out pain

• Pain when putting any weight on joint/limb

• Loss of sensation or loss of power (strength) in the affected area

If you do suffer a FOOSH: Breathe deeply and slowly – to calm your nervous system down

Keep injured area supported, protected and if possible elevated (to encourage drainage of fluid)

Keep body warm and keep hydrated Apply ice to injured area if there is severe swelling (for up to 20 mins, every 2-3 hrs) Keep the area moving a little if possible to encourage blood flow to help healing Take over-the-counter pain relief if necessary (as directed on packet) Seek medical help if indicated (see above)

Many FOOSH injuries heal with time but manual therapy such as osteopathy and appropriate exercises to rebuild muscle strength and function can ensure the best recovery.

Simple tips to avoid a FOOSH: wear goodfitting shoes/boots (check laces are well tied!), with a good grip on the sole. Use a torch if it is dark, don’t rush if ground is wet, slippery or uneven. Walk with a wider base (feet a little further apart than normal) and knees softly slightly bent to create more stability.

WWII Veteran Honoured by Royal Naval Association With The Help Of Community Transport Sussex

Community Transport Sussex were honoured to have helped a Naval Veteran continue to enjoy his passion for the sea, whilst giving him the opportunity to receive the Royal Naval Association Life Membership.

When John Keating and his family reached out to Community Transport Sussex, little did they know what was in store for them. John, a WWII Royal Navy Veteran, was keen to enjoy days out by the sea but needed a companion to accompa ny him as he suffers from Aphasia.

Community Transport Sussex were keen to help in any way they could and found a Travel Buddy who could regularly accompany John to the coast. However, the story doesn’t end there. The Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club in Crawley heard about the 96-yearold, who had served in Motor Torpedo Boats before joining HMS Nelson and faced ‘Kamikaze’s’ during action in the Pacific prior to the Japanese surrender. They decided to get in touch with the Royal Naval Association to do something extra special for John.

John and fellow Shipmate, Tony, were invited to a VIP Day at Portsmouth’s Naval Dockyards to thank them for their incredible service.

Lt Cdr Andy Christie RN (Retd) RNA Ops Manager said:

“It was a fantastic day and such an honour to be able to meet and host John and Tony and award them with Life Member ship of the Royal Naval Association. These gentlemen and their generation gave up so much for everyone and we take every opportunity to salute them”. They were presented with the Royal Naval Association Life Membership for their services in war, toasted with a tot of rum, followed by lunch and finally a boat trip around the harbour looking at all the magnificent ships including, the new aircraft carrier Prince of Wales.

John’s son Peter said: “It was lovely to see the enjoyment in Dad’s face throughout our visit to Portsmouth, the RNA certainly gave us a memorable day reminiscing the time Dad spent in the war“.

If you are looking for a Travel Buddy or want to help someone like John to get out of the house, please email travelbuddy@ ctsussex.org.uk for more information.
