Join a Revolution in Community Housing By supporting St Barnabas House’s Sunflower Memories Appeal, you can give local people, like Kris and his beloved wife Nina, the chance to spend precious time together. Kris tells you what this meant to them.

Join a revolution in community housing We’re all feeling the cost-of-living crisis at the moment, but for some there’s a real worry about keeping a roof over their head. The high cost of buying or renting is a big problem that affects people of all ages. To thrive, communities must have homes that everyone can afford. Many are calling out for a different kind of housing model, and the Adur Collective Community Land Trust (ACCLT) is hoping to answer that call.

roles and others like it on the Community Works website.

Volunteering is for everyone. Want to make a difference in your community? Community Works Volunteer Centre is here to help you get started. Visit volunteer.bhcommunityworks.org.uk to search for a local volunteer role. To arrange a chat with an adviser, call 01273 234023 or email volunteercentre@bhcommunityworks.org.uk.

What is the ACCLT’s proposal?

The ACCLT is trying to set up a different model for providing homes “ one that is affordable for those who need it most. Their vision is to develop or rejuvenate homes that will be owned and managed by the ACCLT with rents linked to local earnings”like a not-for-profit landlord. How can you help?

The ACCLT need to extend and broaden the skills and experience of the management board. It’s looking for new board members who have backgrounds in: • property finance and accounting • running social media campaigns • grants and trust fundraising. It’s a commitment of a few hours a month to attend board meetings and carry out other ad-hoc tasks. It’s a great chance for anyone with the required knowledge and skills to be part of a sea change in affordable and sustainable housing provision locally. You can find more details of the volunteer

Tuition without Competion HERE’S EQUITY RELEASE: WHY THE RIGHT TO MAKE REPAYMENTS COULD CUT THE COST OF BORROWING Equity release can help boost your finances later in life. The way that interest is rolled up often means that people ended up with high levels of debt, but the new right to repayment could change that. Equity release allows you to access some of the wealth that’s tied up in your property, most commonly through a lifetime mortgage. Traditionally, you wouldn’t make any repayments. Instead, the interest accrued would be rolled up and paid once you passed away or moved into long-term care. It means the total amount of debt can quickly increase. Now, the right to make repayments could provide older homeowners with even more flexibility. What does the “right to repayment” mean? Equity release customers taking out a lifetime mortgage from a provider that meets the Equity Release Council standards from 28 March 2022 will be guaranteed the right to make penalty-free partial repayments of their loans. As a result, new customers will be able to offset the interest the debt is accruing and reduce their borrowing if they wish to. Rolling up interest can drastically increase how much you owe during your lifetime One of the drawbacks of equity release is that you can end up owing far more than you originally borrowed because of the way that interest is rolled up. The below table shows how interest adds up if repayments aren’t being made on an equity release loan of £50,000 that has an interest rate of 5%. As the interest is added to the loan amount each year, you go on to pay interest on the interest that T. 01273 774855 E. advice@pembrokefs.co.uk W. www.pembrokefinancial.co.uk

has previously been rolled up. As a result, the longer you have a lifetime mortgage, the quicker the total amount owed will rise. The new guarantee can mean you’re able to unlock property wealth while better managing the loan taken out against your home and reducing the interest. Is equity release right for me? Equity release can be a useful way to boost your finances in retirement, but it’s not the right option for everyone. You will usually need to be age 55 or older and own your own home to be able to use equity release to unlock property wealth. You should also consider how it fits into your overall plan and what your alternative options are. In some cases, depleting other assets you may hold, such as savings or investments, or downsizing makes more sense for your goals. Choosing to use equity release can also limit your other options. It could affect some means-tested benefits too.

Please contact us on 01273 774855 or email advice@pembrokefs.co.uk if you would like more information and quote reference PFSIS. As a mortgage is secured against your home or property, it could be repossessed if you do not keep up mortgage repayments. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Equity released from your home will be secured against it. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments.

The Tong-Mei Biplane In 1912, Mr Tsoe Kwong Wong, a Chinese student from the University Of London arrived at the newly established Shoreham Aerodrome. In 1912, Mr Tsoe Kwong Wong, a Chinese student from the University Of London arrived at the newly established Shoreham Aerodrome. There he joined his fellow pioneers in the fledgling aviation industry. Known as ‘Gordon’ he designed and constructed the single seat ‘Tong-Mei’ (Dragonfly) biplane. It was described as being similar to a BE 3 with its balanced rudder mounted on a wood-filled steel mast that extended through the body, to support the pivoted tailskid. Another similarity was the deep fuselage and landing gear. The steel clips fastening the struts to the plane’s fuselage and skids though were strong pieces of plate work that were considered revolutionary in the design. Another innovation was the rib construction of the wings. Each rib was built up of three laminations of spruce, layered together with glue and rivets. The resulting curve was permanent and the finished rib was of greater strength than in existing planes of the time. The inspiration for this was the dragonfly and the ‘Tong-Mei’ became the first all-weather aircraft intended for mass production and use in the seasonal extremes of the Far East. The comfort of the pilot had been carefully considered and they were well sheltered behind an aluminium turtle deck, which also streamlined the petrol and oil tanks. The fuselage ended in an almost semicircular tail with a slightly cambered top-surface. The plane’s wingspan was thirty feet across and the wings had a trailing edge and were swept back to provide greater control in flight. In 1913

the plane was fitted with a 40 hp ABC fourcylinder inline engine. With his plane complete, Wong decided it was time to learn to fly himself, which he had been unable to do up until this point. He studied at the Ducrocq and Lawford School at Brooklands, flying Bleriot monoplanes. On the 15th of August he was awarded his certificate stamped #593 after his test at Brooklands, having flown a Bristol biplane. He then took to the skies of Shoreham in his uncanvassed skeletal ‘Tong-Mei’ with enough fuel to fly for three and a half hours. Further test flights were also a success. In December 1913 with William Forbes Skene an engineer and the pilot Eardley Haydon Lawford as directors the company T. K. Wong Ltd was created. In 1914, before the plane was demonstrated in front of an audience of investors it was agreed it needed to be aesthetically pleasing and it was redesigned. A second seat was added and the original ABC engine was replaced with the larger more powerful 100 hp Anzani radial engine. The fuselage ahead of the cockpit was made of a mix of flat sheets of aluminium on the sides and rounded sheets on the top and bottom. The fuselage and wings were covered with canvas and ‘Wong’ was paint stencilled in big letters along the fuselage, where previously the name had been hand cont/d page 14

The Tong-Mei Biplane aluminium on the sides and rounded sheets on the top and bottom. The fuselage and wings were covered with canvas and ‘Wong’ was paint stencilled in big letters along the fuselage, where previously the name had been hand painted.

After more test flights at Shoreham the ‘Tong-Mei’ was disassembled, crated and shipped to the Federated Malay States in the hope of attracting investment. It was reassembled at the improvised airstrip of the Kuala Lumpur Polo Ground. After more test flights it seemed T.K. Wong was about to realise his ambition of bringing aviation to the Far East. On Saturday the 11th of July 1914, to the delight of an excited audience he took off from the polo field. Unfortunately however Wong misjudged his landing, running off the field and into

a fence, snapping off the plane’s propeller. After repairs further flights to attract investment met with mishaps such as a burst tyre and broken skis on landing. On its final flight the engine stalled. Wong then discovered that globally there was a lack of enthusiasm to invest in aviation. It was still deemed a novelty by many and wasn’t deemed commercial enough. The ‘TongMei’ was one of many prototype planes consigned to history, but it did become successful as a popular scale model kit. Verrucae Karen our podiatrist at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-by-Sea discusses the common problem of verrucae. Verrucae are warts caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that can be found anywhere on the foot but commonly occur on the soles of the feet.

They can even be found around the edges of the nails. The virus is thought to thrive in moist damp environments such as communal changing/showering areas. An infected foot deposits skin cells onto the floor where it is then possible to walk across the same floor and pick up the virus.

If you suspect you have a verrucae or indeed any other foot problem contact us for an appointment on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or www. firstfootclinic.co.uk

Verrucae are harmless but can be unsightly and cause pain. The pain is usually associated with a build up of hard skin (callus) that can form over the infected skin. Anyone can get verrucae but children, young adults and those that use leisure facilities are more prone. Some individuals are more susceptible than others. The classic appearance is a cauliflower like area with black dots. These black dots are blood vessels leaking blood into the verrucae and so may not be present even if the foot is infected. Verrucae vary in size, shape and number and can sometimes be mistaken for a corn. It is therefore, important to have the area looked at to get it diagnosed and advice can be obtained. Karen will be able to advise you on a variety of treatments that are available both within the clinical setting and/or for you to try at home. Further advice will also be given to avoid spread to other areas of your feet, to others around you and preventative measures you may wish to consider for the future.

WARRANTY

Just as not all used cars are the same you will realise that not all used car dealers are the same. Regardless of the car you buy, most independent ‘dealers’ will offer you a warranty which is not fit for purpose either because it is too short or it doesn’t cover important items on your car. Some ‘dealers’ may even try to dodge the warranty question all together! Here at Manor Car Sales we dare to be different and that is why we offer all of our cars for sale with our EXCLUSIVE 6 month MCS Warranty

Exhibition of paintings, drawings and designs coming to the Shoreham Centre in September Jon Peaty was a local artist who had an impact both locally and nationally.

His work included brand advertising, newspaper and magazine illustration, murals and cartoons. However, his first love was painting and this eventually became his main source of income. He held many one – man shows mainly in the UK but also in America and undertook portrait commissions on a regular basis. His own estimate was that he had painted some 3000 or more works. Painting is the field of work for which he would most want to remembered and so among the works exhibited there will be some 30 paintings. Returning from war to Southwick, Jon also wanted to make a community contribution and he quickly got involved with the Southwick Community Centre and Southwick Players. His art skills were volunteered for a range of activities including Centre advertising and events, and sets and decor for the Southwick Players. He also founded the Southwick Art Club which continues to this day.

range of talents and will be of historic and artistic interest. Members of the family will be at the gallery most days. If you have memories of Jon or maybe if you have one of his paintings, do come along, say hello and have a chat. The exhibition ‘Jon Peaty – artist 1914-1991: A retrospective exhibition of paintings drawings and designs.’ opens at the Skyways Gallery at the Shoreham Centre, Pond Road on September 10th and runs until the 30th September (not Sundays).

Jon was known as a ‘character’ on the local scene, he had a great sense of fun and was a lover of landscape and nature. These qualities permeate the work on show. This exhibition will be the first showing of Jon’s work since his death. It illustrates his

Can you help? The Dance Class Book I go to Dancercise. A dance class at the Shoreham Community Centre. One day I decided to collect dancers stories. I envisaged a booklet, but it has evolved into a 230 page book about women and their struggles through the decades, and for some a feeling of invisibility. I have almost completed the book, but I have no idea how to get it published, Self-Publication has been suggested, but I am not very good at the Internet. Can anyone HELP me please?

Any one for Tennis.... Elbow? Following on from our article in May on different types of elbow pain, Alex Marek, Registered Osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, expands on this “seasonal” injury! Balmy evenings, freshly cut grass, strawberries and cream, Pimm’s - tennis season has arrived. Perhaps you’ve been inspired to dust off your racket! Lateral Epicondylitis, the medical name for “tennis elbow” is the most common overuse syndrome of this joint. It is an injury to the tendon (tendinopathy) of some of the muscles of your forearm, which originate from the outside of your elbow, travelling down to the back of your wrist. Interestingly only 5% of people suffering from it relate their injury to playing tennis! It results from any muscular overload that chronically stresses the tendon near its attachment on the elbow. So you can also sustain this condition from other sports, including squash, badminton, swimming and field throwing events - or occupations that involve repetitive one-sided movements of the arm, eg computer use, heavy lifting and carrying or vibration (eg drilling). This means almost anyone, from office workers to carpenters, electricians, gardeners, may present with “tennis” elbow. The classic symptom is worsening pain on the outside of the elbow where the tendon attaches, associated with increase in activity levels. At first, pain might only be present at the beginning of an activity, disappear during the activity itself and reappear once cooling down. Pain is often easy to pin-point and described in early stages as ‘‘severe’’ or ‘‘sharp’’, becoming a constant ‘‘dull ache’’ as it becomes chronic. If you think you may have tennis elbow, try the following: •

pain has many causes and proper diagnosis is important. •

Rest from aggravating repetitive movements (racket down, strawberries and cream up!)

•

Apply ice

•

Wear a suitable elbow support

•

Anti-inflammatories (if medically directed)

At SOC, our trusted osteopaths will conduct a full assessment, treatment and advice. We might not turn you into the next Nadal, but we’ll do our utmost to resolve your symptoms and get you back to health! Call us on 01273 567654 or email info@ shorehamosteo.co.uk

Peace of Mind for you and your family Do you have medical conditions and worry about living alone? Perhaps you have parents or relatives who may be getting frail and you’re concerned about being there to help in an emergency. Your Local Lions Club, Adur East, regularly hold a stall at the Shoreham Artisan Market (on the 4th Saturday of the month), and always promote their Message in a Bottle & Message in a Wallet scheme Whilst it may be focused on the more vulnerable people in our community, anyone can fall downstairs or have a car accident, so this scheme can benefit anyone, including you. As a minimum it will save the Emergency Services valuable time identifying the patient and their emergency contacts. By telling whether someone is on certain medications or allergies or not, its a potential lifesaver and provides peace of mind to users and their friends and families.

The Lions Message In a Bottle scheme is a simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common location - For Message in a Bottle, that’s the Fridge! A sticker included in the pack is placed on the back of your front door The Emergency Services are trained to spot these stickers and if seen, will know that important information can be found in the bottle in the Fridge. For Message in a Wallet - It’s as you’d imagine, the card is kept in someone’s wallet or purse.

If you’d like one of our Bottles or Wallet cards for yourself or a member of your family, just come and find us at the Shoreham Artisan Market - we’d love to see you! Keeping the community safer in their homes - Adur East Lions x

The bottles and wallet cards are FREE - and whilst we’d love a donation, what we love more is helping people feel safer in their homes, knowing that should the unthinkable happen (perhaps a fall which leaves you confused and/or unable to

St Mary de Haura Bell Ringers

Did you know St Mary’s has a ring of 8 bells in the key of F ranging in weight from 200 kg to 700 kg? Originally from 1767, the bells were recast in 1896. There is an enthusiastic band of ringers at St Mary’s who ring for the main service every Sunday from 9.15 to 10am. Practice night is Tuesday’s 7.45 - 9.15pm when the town is filled with the beautiful sound of church bells. The bells of St Mary’s also ring for weddings and other special occasions. The St Mary’s ringers are always on the lookout for new members to join the band. It’s a fascinating and sociable pastime. Bell Ringing uses number notation, so its not necessary to have any musical knowledge, although a sense of rhythm and a good memory can be helpful. The first stage for a beginner is to learn how to handle a tower bell safely which is taught on a one-to-one basis. Once the basics have been mastered, ringing becomes a group activity with the opportunity of visiting other towers and making new friends. In 1896, the St Mary’s bells dating from

1767 were melted down and recast, with the exception of the present 7th bell, to make a ring of six bells, and two further bells were added the following year. In 1983 the bells were re-tuned and re-hung by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which has been in existence for over 400 years. They dealt with the casting of the 1767 ring and have done all work on the bells since then. In the UK there are around 40,000 ringers and approximately 5,600 towers with bells hung for full circle ringing. Ringers from other churches are always welcome to come and join us. We are pleased to receive visits from non-ringers by prior arrangement who would like to come and watch. Rencontres d’Arles

The Arles Photo Festival

After the travel restrictions imposed during the worst part of the pandemic, I finally had the opportunity to visit my favourite photo festival.

Arles is an historic town in the Provence area of France and has hosted a photography festival since 1970. I have visited many times, my last visit in 2019 was the 50th anniversary of this three month long celebration of visual lens based art.

After two years of lockdown I was able to visit last month. Understandably there was quieter feel as the visitors were fewer in number as was the volume of fringe events but there was so much to see and to experience. There were 40 main exhibitions and the usual fun element of photographers pasting their work on outside walls for people to enjoy. These pasted pictures also give photographers interesting backdrops to use in their own photography as I have done here. My main photograph captures the work of an artist known as DOUDOU. This monochrome work sets the scene for me to wait for a passer by in red clothing to add an accent of colour in the centre of the panoramic image.

My other two photographs were observed around the town. I cannot do justice to this festival in one article so I will continue this subject in next month’s issue. You can see more of my images here: www.instagram.com/shoreham_steve
