Rotary Club of Storrington & Pulborough District’s Chanctonbury Lions Club to transfer its Bookselling operation to The Rotary Club of Storrington & Pulborough District Due to a drop in active membership Chanctonbury Lions Club is to cease its book selling operation in the Storrington area. The Club, which was formed in 1959, has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for good causes. For some years their main fundraising activity has been selling pre-owned books, CDs, DVDs and vinyl records kindly donated by the general public. Cessation would have deprived local people of a popular community activity. The good news is that the Rotary Club of Storrington and Pulborough District is to step into the breach taking over the bookselling operation from August 2021. This means local book lovers will be able to continue to buy from a massive range of books from the bookstall in Storrington centre (Place Villerest) every Saturday morning. Additionally, there is a bookcase with a donation box in the waiting room at Pulborough Station for London bound commuters. The Rotary book van will also attend local village days and fetes.
Paul Weaver, President of Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club said: ‘Chanctonbury Lions Club has done an amazing job of extending book purchase and readership among folk across our region and their motto ˜WE SERVE” has been so well demonstrated over the past 62 years. Rotary has worked closely with Lions Club for the community during this time and we are proud to continue their bookstall service ensuring that book buyers can satisfy their reading appetites while raising money for worthwhile causes . Phil Abbott, President of Chanctonbury Lions Club said: ‘We are delighted that our Rotary friends are taking over our book selling operation, it is in safe hands. We will still be active in the community.’
Rotary will administer the book sales operation accepting donations of books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, jigsaw puzzles (complete) and board games and any of these items which cannot be sold will be sold on to wholesalers for resale or recycling. The new Bookstore service is indebted to InstoneAir at Parham for providing a site to erect a storage area and to park the library van and also to Mid Sussex Timber Company Ltd for sponsoring the new storeroom. Symmetry in Visual Arts
Visual artists often use symmetry in their work to provoke a reaction from the viewer of tranquil harmony. Visual artists often use symmetry in their work to provoke a reaction from the viewer of tranquil harmony. Human beings are mostly symmetrical so the theory is that this makes us appreciate symmetry in other places including art of all kinds. However, this harmony can be rather bland so if an element is introduced which disturbs the symmetry, a tension is created in the composition as our brain attempts to interpret the scene. This can enhance our appreciation of the piece. I use that word because this law also applies to sculpture of course. The aim is to stimulate the mind of the viewer, to make the question what they are seeing and to search for answers. The image here, at first glance, is pretty straight forward.
single stem of a plastic rose placed between the clasped hands. This rose breaks the symmetry and also offers an alternative colour to the rest of the photograph and so cannot be ignored, it draws the eye. But that’s not the whole story. See if you can work out how those hands are intertwined. A very clever sculptor has challenged the viewer to interpret the work. I have merely observed this, selected the area of most interest to me and committed that to digital format via the camera. It is mainly the work of another artist but I have reinterpreted it using a different medium, that of photography. The sculpture is statue remains in one place but a photograph can be seen by a huge, worldwide audience if posted online. Croft Meadow

Tanyard Lane, Steyning, West Sussex BN44 3RJ Dementia Care
Residential Care
We are welcoming New Admissions
GREAT NEWS!
No need to isolate*
Croft Meadow is in the picturesque town of Steyning, West Sussex. A respite stay is a really good way to introduce care to a loved one. We very often find, for an older person, seeing a beginning and end date is a positive start for them.
Respite stays can support the person themselves to live longer independently at home, often thinking of them a bit like a holiday. Respite stays can also offer a break for home carers or family, safe in the knowledge that their loved one is being cared for at Croft Meadow. Our care fees are dependent on care requirements so please call or email to discuss on:

Drilling for Oil at Henfield Since the Iron Age, hydrocarbons have been used as a fuel substitute for coal in Southern England. Then in the 18th century, natural gas was accidentally discovered in coal borings in Sussex.
A century later several natural gas explosions occurred as a result of drilling water wells, in addition to mining in East Sussex. At the end of the First World War in 1918, such was the extent of the German U-boat blockade that the British Government became concerned about the difficulty of importing enough fuel, should there be a future conflict. It would be useful if Britain were self-sufficient in coal and oil. The Petroleum Production Act was passed in 1934, and the first licences were issued in December 1935 to various oil companies to search for both oil and gas in Southern England. Soon after this legislation was passed, deep boreholes were drilled in Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex and Kent. One site was at Henfield in West Sussex. It was operated by D’Arcy Exploration Company, under the directorship of the geologist Dr. George Martin Lees. During the First World War Lees had served with the Royal Flying Corps in Egypt and Mesopotamia (now Iraq). He had been awarded the first Military Cross and then the Distinguished Flying Cross after being shot down behind enemy lines. On that occasion Lees ended up trekking for thirty miles by night across the desert to escape from the Turkish Army. After the war, Lees returned to England where he studied and graduated from the Royal School Of Mines and then worked throughout the Middle East in the 1920’s with the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. In 1937 at Henfield, Jurassic rock was found at a depth of over three thousand feet. A slight variation of the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous subterranean layers discovered at the Portsdown site overlooking Portsmouth harbour had fuelled speculation that Britain had vast undiscovered oil and gas reserves in Southern England. However further drilling in

various locations across Sussex produced little evidence that these resources actually existed. With the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 the search was abandoned. The war ended in 1945 and during the 1950’s drilling was restarted by the British Petroleum Company Ltd and now included the search for natural gas on behalf of the Gas Council and Imperial Chemical Industries. A sample borehole was again opened at Henfield. Mud shale and limestone existed at a depth of one thousand feet with the clay bed reaching down in excess of two thousand feet. The rock samples were labelled HN/ with the core material then coded KC/ for Kimmeridge Clay or LL/ for Lower Lias depending on the mineral formation found. The samples were then numbered and labelled with the depth they were found at. The fifth and final rock sample taken from the borehole was found at four thousand, eight hundred and forty three feet and so was labelled HN/LL.5 (4843.5). It was originally dark-grey in colour and described as mudstone. Its chemical composition was twenty-two percent clay, thirty-two percent quartz and thirty-four percent calcite, with the rest of its mineral content not measuring in double figures. Upon testing, the samples turned yellow and the hydrocarbon cont/d 12

count was found to be very low. This meant no oil or gas existed in sufficient quantity to be commercially viable. Geologists Arthur Harold Taitt and Peter Kent presented their findings to the British Petroleum Company Ltd and the Henfield site was decommissioned in 1958. 5 EXCUSES FOR NOT SEEKING FINANCIAL ADVICE And why they’re wrong.
Millions of people are missing out on financial advice that could help them reach their goals because of misconceptions. According to Royal London, 9.4 million people in the UK choose not to look for a financial adviser despite being open to the idea of it. The survey suggests that some are not seeking advice due to misconceptions: 1. Financial advice is too expensive: Almost half (47%) of respondents said financial advice was too expensive. Financial advisers must be clear about the cost of advice. Many will also offer an initial meeting free of charge so you can meet them, discuss your needs, and understand if they can help you. When weighing up the cost of financial advice, it’s also important to look at the bigger picture. A study from the International Longevity Centre (ILC) published in 2019, found that advised clients accumulated more wealth than non-advised clients. 2. I can look after my own money: Over a third (35%) of respondents said they didn’t take financial advice as they felt confident enough to do it themselves. Financial advice can help you understand all the opportunities you have and how best to reach your goals. Working with a financial planner doesn’t mean giving up control but provides you with additional support. 3. Financial advice isn’t for someone like me: You may think that your net worth has to be above a certain figure to make financial advice worthwhile. However, financial planning can T. 01273 774855 E. advice@pembrokefs.co.uk W. www.pembrokefinancial.co.uk
help a range of people. The ILC report found those deemed “just getting by” benefited from financial advice more than affluent clients. 4. It isn’t something I’ve thought about: For one in five (22%) financial advice simply isn’t something they’ve thought about. However, taking even small steps now can help you have a more secure future that meets your aspirations. 5. I don’t like talking about money: Talking about money is still something of a taboo subject. Even among family and friends, money is something we rarely talk about. In fact, 17% said they were too proud or too embarrassed to talk to someone about money. Focusing on how an open discussion about your finances can help you reach goals, from retiring early to creating a nest egg for children, can help.
If you or someone you know has been putting off seeking financial advice, please give us a call and quote PFSVL when you speak with us. Your initial consultation with us is free. SUSSEX’S LEADING INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVISERS. Marlborough House, 102-110 High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea BN43 5DB
