5 EXCUSES FOR NOT SEEKING FINANCIAL ADVICE And why they’re wrong.

Millions of people are missing out on financial advice that could help them reach their goals because of misconceptions. According to Royal London, 9.4 million people in the UK choose not to look for a financial adviser despite being open to the idea of it. The survey suggests that some are not seeking advice due to misconceptions: 1. Financial advice is too expensive: Almost half (47%) of respondents said financial advice was too expensive. Financial advisers must be clear about the cost of advice. Many will also offer an initial meeting free of charge so you can meet them, discuss your needs, and understand if they can help you. When weighing up the cost of financial advice, it’s also important to look at the bigger picture. A study from the International Longevity Centre (ILC) published in 2019, found that advised clients accumulated more wealth than non-advised clients. 2. I can look after my own money: Over a third (35%) of respondents said they didn’t take financial advice as they felt confident enough to do it themselves. Financial advice can help you understand all the opportunities you have and how best to reach your goals. Working with a financial planner doesn’t mean giving up control but provides you with additional support. 3. Financial advice isn’t for someone like me: You may think that your net worth has to be above a certain figure to make financial advice worthwhile. However, financial planning can T. 01273 774855 E. advice@pembrokefs.co.uk W. www.pembrokefinancial.co.uk

help a range of people. The ILC report found those deemed “just getting by” benefited from financial advice more than affluent clients. 4. It isn’t something I’ve thought about: For one in five (22%) financial advice simply isn’t something they’ve thought about. However, taking even small steps now can help you have a more secure future that meets your aspirations. 5. I don’t like talking about money: Talking about money is still something of a taboo subject. Even among family and friends, money is something we rarely talk about. In fact, 17% said they were too proud or too embarrassed to talk to someone about money. Focusing on how an open discussion about your finances can help you reach goals, from retiring early to creating a nest egg for children, can help.

If you or someone you know has been putting off seeking financial advice, please give us a call and quote PFSIS when you speak with us. Your initial consultation with us is free. SUSSEX’S LEADING INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVISERS. Marlborough House, 102-110 High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea BN43 5DB

The legendary Southwick Beer Festival is back! Like so many other events in the past 18 months the festivals scheduled for May 2020 and May 2021 had to be cancelled. But the team that organise the usual two-day event decided that rather than wait until next year, there would be one-day Festival on Saturday 4 September 2021. There are some changes to the usual festival format, but it promises to be just as much fun. Rather than cask ales there will be a fine selection of keg beers and ciders sourced from a range of local makers. Some of the brewers will be at the festival to serve your beer and chat to you. Refreshments will be available from a burger and hot-dog van and ice-cream and waffle barrows will be there in the afternoon. Live music will entertain you in the garden.

whole day 11am to 11pm. Tickets available on-line, via www.southwickcommunitycentre. org.uk

The festival is a fundraising event for the Southwick Community Centre, though as Nigel Bubloz, who heads up the Beer Festival Team said, “our main purpose is to welcome people back to the Community Centre and to put on an event that will be fun and sociable after such difficult times.” The whole of the centre and its lovely garden will be used for the festival, ensuring there is plenty of space and ventilation. Ticket numbers will be limited but are only £5 for the

The common problem of Verrucae Karen our podiatrist at First Foot Clinic, Shoreham-bySea discusses the common problem of verrucae. Verrucae are warts caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that can be found anywhere on the foot but commonly occur on the soles of the feet. They can even be found around the edges of the nails. The virus is thought to thrive in moist damp environments such as communal changing/showering areas. An infected foot deposits skin cells onto the floor where it is then possible to walk across the same floor and pick up the virus. Verrucae are harmless but can be unsightly and cause pain. The pain is usually associated with a build up of hard skin (callus) that can form over the infected skin. Anyone can get verrucae but children, young adults and those that use leisure facilities are more prone. Some individuals are more susceptible than others. The classic appearance is a cauliflower like area with black dots. These black dots are blood vessels leaking blood into the verrucae and so may not be present even if the foot is infected. Verrucae vary in size, shape and number and can sometimes be mistaken for a corn. It is therefore, important to have the area looked at to get it diagnosed and advice can be obtained.

also be given to avoid spread to other areas of your feet, to others around you and preventative measures you may wish to consider for the future. If you suspect you have a verrucae or indeed any other foot problem contact us for an appointment on 01273 455080 email@firstfootclinic.co.uk or www. firstfootclinic.co.uk

Safe in Sussex’s annual Shocking Shirts & Funky Frocks Day is a great success This June Safe in Sussex held their 3rd annual Shocking Shirts and Funky Frocks Day, well month! As it can be difficult to organise everything on one day of the year, they decided to let everyone decide what day in June was best for them to celebrate it! This enabled the charity to raise over £1,250 this year. Shocking Shirts and Funky Frocks Day is normally held the last Friday of June which coincides with National Cream Tea Day. So, this year there were fabulous outfits and cream teas all through the month. Those participating included Lime Tree Surgery, who have 3 surgeries across West Sussex who celebrated on the 6th July. Events took place at homes, workplaces and virtually on zoom. Organisations like Nutley’s Kitchen Garden and Carpenter Box held competitions for best dressed employees. St Peter’s Catholic Primary School, Shoreham by Sea and The Play Centre in Rustington got involved wearing their most outrageous outfits. BMI Goring Hall staff wore their outfits whilst enjoying a cream tea and a Zumba class dressed up in tutus and flower garlands! Worthing & Adur Chamber of Commerce also

supported the event at one of their virtual Chamber Hubs and area managers of My Networking Club took part raising a total of £208 through their meetings on zoom and a Walk, Lunch and Cake event. Debbie West one of the Corporate & Community Fundraisers for Safe in Sussex said “We have had to change how we fundraise due to Covid-19, making use of virtual opportunities but this year we have been able to go back to a few face-to-face celebrations too. We are delighted and thankful that our event is growing with many more people taking part and helping raise much needed funds and awareness of the vital work Safe in Sussex does to end domestic abuse in our community.

The Two Thomas Fenners In the reign of Queen Elizabeth the First, to encourage the building of merchant ships suitable for use in time of war, the queen had settled a grant of five shillings a ton on all vessels built of one hundred tons and upwards. In 1571, Mr Thomas Fenner was paid this bounty for the construction of the “Bark Fenner” a one hundred and fifty ton vessel that was built in Shoreham, where Mr Fenner also lived. He was born in Harting, Sussex in 1540 and was the youngest son of John ‘the elder’ Fenner, of Crawley. Thomas Fenner’s brother was Edward Fenner who became the Member of Parliament for New Shoreham in 1572. Mr Thomas Fenner worked as an ironmaster and had married Mary, daughter of John Bellingham of Hartingham. Mr Thomas Fenner was summoned to appear before the Lords of Her Majesty’s Council on the 2nd of January 1579. This was after it had been discovered that the ‘Bark Fenner’ was being used to smuggle cast-iron ordnance (cannonballs and a hundred pieces of cannon) to Spain. Mr Fenner was charged with trading with the enemy. He confessed and was committed to Fleet Prison on the 28th of January of that year, but was released on 7th February. Despite this act of treason that endangered the lives of the town’s sailors from Spanish raiders, Mr Fenner was, on the 10th of November 1584, elected the Member of Parliament for New Shoreham. His political career was unremarkable save for a seat on the fisheries committee on 7th of December 1584 and the tellers and receivers committee on 10th March of 1585. In a strange twist of fate another Thomas Fenner was known to occasionally reside in Shoreham, because of his career in the Royal Navy. Captain Thomas Fenner of Chichester

Sir Francis Drake’s flagship the “ Elizabeth Bonaventure - 1585”

was born in Horley, Surrey in 1540, the son of Arthur Fenner. The Fenners were an esteemed navy family with brother George and cousins William and Edward serving as ships’ captains. Captain Thomas Fenner had married Mary Sheldon and this added to the two men sometimes being confused for one another in historical records. Thomas Fenner is quoted as, ‘one of the most daring and experienced officers of his time.’ Admiral Sir Francis Drake appointed him the captain of his flagship the ‘Elizabeth Bonaventure’ in 1585 at the start of the Spanish War and the campaign in the West Indies. In 1586 Captain Fenner was master and commander of the ship the Hope. In 1587 he was captain of the vessel the Dreadnought when Drake’s fleet launched a surprise raid on Cadiz, Spain in which twenty-four ships were destroyed. Captain Fenner wrote in May 1587 an account in dispatches of the troop landings at the Bay of Lagos, Portugal. He also wrote of the sieges of the castles of Cape St. Vincent and Cape Sagres. Both were of strategic importance and their capture resulted in a Royal Navy blockade and seizure of shipping off the Spanish coast. In 1588 Captain Fenner was in command of cont/d page 36

Retired Captain of the Bell Tower at St Mary de Haura Celebrates his 90th Birthday Jim Lilley, the former Tower Captain at St Mary’s, celebrated his 90th birthday in style last month.

He joined friends and family in St Mary’s churchyard for a glass of bubbly, a fitting venue for Jim who had been captain of the church bell tower for 40 years. His life-long love of bell ringing started when his father showed him the ropes when he was 13 and from then on father and son rang the bells at Cuckfield church. On his marriage in 1956 he moved to a newly built bungalow in Crown Road, where he still lives surrounded by fruit trees, vegetables, flowers and the neatest lawn showing his obvious love of gardening. Despite periods of ill health – undergoing six operations since 1985 – Jim has managed to get out and about on forty coach trip holidays to bell towers all over the country, never back to the same place twice. These trips, along with many open tower days in various towns and cities, have enabled him to visit churches and cathedrals along the way and so far he has rung the bells in 3,411 towers. So, in bell ringing parlance, he is a real “tower grabber”! Jim’s favourite tower is in York Minster where he has rung twice. He must have a head for heights as the tallest tower he has rung in is at Boston Stump (St Botolph’s church) which is 272 feet tall and it takes a climb of ten minutes to get to the ringing room. The most famous bell Jim has visited was Big Ben. He and his party of ringers were only a few feet away from it while it rang 11 o’clock – ear protectors were definitely needed, as they were when he visited St Paul’s Cathedral and saw the biggest chiming bell, Great Paul, weighing in at 3,700 kg. Bell ringing is certainly not for the faint hearted as it can involve climbing narrow stairs and ladders, sometimes outside, occasionally crawling through tunnels to reach the bell tower. And of course you must never forget to let go of the rope as accidents, sometimes fatal, have occurred when people hang on and are swung up towards the bells.

but was heartbroken when they all eventually left to go to university. Jim also ran a hand bell ringing group for 25 years, entertaining rest homes with their lovely melodies. But for some the sound of bells is not a pleasant sound. Jim tells the story of a man living in Church Street who complained about a full peal being rung one day. Jim asked him how long he had lived in his house. He replied seven years to which Jim replied that St Mary’s bells had been there since 1767 so much longer than him! Jim is thankful for a long and happy life, with a wonderful son and daughter in law who help him any way they can and his advice for others is to get out, enjoy life, and make the most of it. However is it by chance that he survived as long as he did. When he was 12 he was train spotting on a bridge over the railway line when a gust of wind blew his paper onto the track and under the conductor rail. He climbed onto the track and gingerly eased the paper out from under the live rail! So, thank heaven you survived and well done Jim for a long life well lived. If you would like to try your hand at bell ringing please contact St Mary’s Parish Office: smdh. office@gmail.com;

When he was made Tower Captain in 1969 he enjoyed teaching a group of keen young students Have a local editorial item? Email Insidemags@gmail.com

Get off the beaten track this summer in Adur Beautiful idyllic walks in the countryside, adrenaline pumping sports on the water and great places to sit and watch the world go by. They are just some of the activities showcased in a new campaign launched today called Days Out in Adur. Adur District Council has launched the campaign to remind residents and visitors alike that they don’t need to go far this summer to enjoy a varied and fun-packed day out with a huge range of attractions. In addition the Council is pledging its support for the hard-pressed leisure, retail and hospitality sectors of the district which have suffered from the lockdowns of the last year and a half. It is hoped that by increasing numbers of visitors it will help to boost the local economy. Over the next five weeks the Council will be showcasing five separate days out, covering the entire district from the downs to sea, and across the towns and villages. While each would make for a busy day some might choose to select one or two activities to enjoy. Among the activities to be listed and detailed are:

doesn’t always get recognised. Indeed as a local myself I sometimes forget what we have to offer. “I hope the A Day Out in Adur campaign in some small way also helps our businesses bounce back from the pandemic. We need them badly and will do all we can to support them.” The five areas covered by the five week campaign starting next week are the Downs, Lancing, Soutwick, the Coast and Shoreham. With many traditional British holiday areas likely to be extremely busy as the country emerges from lockdown, the campaign will emphasise that many places in the district are “away from the beaten track.” It will also highlight the good value for money available, many free activities, reasonably priced food outlets, cheap parking and good public transport links. Symmetry in Visual Art

Visual artists often use symmetry in their work to provoke a reaction from the viewer of tranquil harmony. Visual artists often use symmetry in their work to provoke a reaction from the viewer of tranquil harmony. Human beings are mostly symmetrical so the theory is that this makes us appreciate symmetry in other places including art of all kinds. However, this harmony can be rather bland so if an element is introduced which disturbs the symmetry, a tension is created in the composition as our brain attempts to interpret the scene. This can enhance our appreciation of the piece. I use that word because this law also applies to sculpture of course. The aim is to stimulate the mind of the viewer, to make the question what they are seeing and to search for answers. The image here, at first glance, is pretty straight forward.

A portion of statue in a cemetery in Paris, a single stem of a plastic rose placed between the clasped hands. This rose breaks the symmetry and also offers an alternative colour to the rest of the photograph and so cannot be ignored, it draws the eye. But that’s not the whole story. See if you can work out how those hands are intertwined. A very clever sculptor has challenged the viewer to interpret the work. I have merely observed this, selected the area of most interest to me and committed that to digital format via the camera. It is mainly the work of another artist but I have reinterpreted it using a different medium, that of photography. The sculpture is statue remains in one place but a photograph can be seen by a huge, worldwide audience if posted online. Songbirds How to bring a dawn chorus to your back door. The birds: Robin – A twinkling, crystal-like sound that flutters through the air.

makes a sound closest to those slightly shrill mobile phone ringtones… but nicer!

Great tit – A repetitive two-toned whistle that cuts through the air and is most prominent in early spring.

Goldfinch – Elegant inflections and the occasional sound of a penny whistle thrown in for good measure.

Wren – The wren’s song features a raft of twists and twirls ending up in a rattling cacophony of noise towards the end.

How to attract them: Bird feeders – The type of food you supply will directly influence the species you attract. Suet balls for robins, blue tits and long-tailed tits; niger seeds for greenfinches and goldfinches; starlings, mealworms for robins and blackbirds; while tits, finches and siskins love peanuts.

Chaffinch – The chaffinch offers a punchy, powerful array of notes that slows towards the end Blackbird – The blackbird’s song features notes drawn into each other that offer a range of tones and a stylish array of chords. Song thrush – The song thrush

Water – Whether bathing, playing in it or drinking the stuff, a supply of fresh water is one of the best ways to get birds engaged in your garden.

Plants – Edible plants, berries, shrubs and wildflowers will keep your birds hanging around for long periods. Protection – Birds are always on the lookout for predators, so the more space you can offer your feathered friends, especially in birdboxes, the more they’ll hang about.

The Wonders of Human Touch! Emma Bolongaro, Registered Massage Therapist at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, explores the power of touch and therapeutic massage. From the earliest days of humankind, when one person reached out to soothe another, we have known that safe and welcomed physical contact is good for us. Touch is a basic human need. We need it to thrive and promote good health and happiness. Since March 2020, almost the whole human population has been, to some extent, deprived of that most basic of human needs. A wealth of research has demonstrated that touch is truly fundamental to human communication, bonding, health and wellbeing. More than that, as physical health and mental health are deeply interrelated, the right kind of safe, comforting touch can have a profound effect on mental health too. Think of the hugs we’ve all missed! Associated with this, is the fact that when your body is relieved of pain, such as through a relaxing massage, your mind adopts a sense of calm. This is where oxytocin, a ‘feel good’ hormone, comes into play. It is released into the bloodstream when the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems are brought into balance through deep relaxation. Therapeutic massage can be a powerful tool to help us take charge of our health, wellbeing and healing. It used to be regarded as a luxury treatment in spas and upscale health lubs, but today massage therapy is offered more widely, at places of work, hospitals, clinics and even airports. Thankfully it is now becoming seen as more of a necessity to aid wellbeing and a good healthy lifestyle through more body awareness. Research shows massage can • Reducing stress, muscle pain and

•

tension Increase relaxation

•

Improve circulation, energy and alertness

•

Lower heart rate and blood pressure

•

Improving immune function and lymphatic flow,

•

Assist muscular repair and recovery

There is also some evidence that massage can help with: Anxiety, Digestive disorders, Fibromyalgia, Headaches, Insomnia related to stress, Myofascial pain syndrome. Essentially, therapeutic massage brings us back to our self, provides “self-connection”, a time when we can be silent if we like, get lost in our thoughts, slow those thoughts down, breathe deeply and enjoy the wonders of human touch. For more information, please contact Emma (Deep Kneads Therapeutic Massage) or the team at SOC, www.shorehamosteo.co.uk, 01273 567654 01273 567654

Default Davina Presenter Davina McCall has spent three decades at the top of terrestrial entertainment, presented countless gameshows and BRIT Awards ceremonies, produced 14 fitness DVDs, appeared as a guest on shows including Would I Lie to You?, Celebrity Juice and even Question Time, was a judge on The Masked Singer, and even raised over £2.2m for Sport Relief. Yet her specialist subject will always be fitness! “I feel I have evolved in terms of the person I am and the work that I do, but at the heart of it I’ve always been fascinated by British TV and entertainment. I

think that’s why so much of my work comes back to that. “My passing for fitness and health though really patterns so much of my thinking, though. It’s strange, when I was young I did a bit of ballet but I had to leave in the end because I couldn’t keep my tummy in and my bottom in at the same time! Beyond that I didn’t even think about getting fit till I was about 30. “I used to dance in nightclubs nonstop, then stopped going out so much, put on a tonne of weight and

did bits in the gym/ I was a ‘read a magazine on the treadmill’ person. These days I’m much more focused, and it’s good for us to be. I fear the fact lockdown held a lot of people back from pursuing normal exercise, and now we’re heading back towards normality, there is a real need for people to repair the physical and mental effects of the past year, and I pray that happens.”

New Year, New President Adur East Lions 2021 -2022 Last month’s Inside magazine said farewell to Lion President Pearl and highlighted her achievements.

This month the Lions are welcoming incoming President, Lion Trevor Burchell. Here are a few words from Trevor: “I would like to introduce myself as the new President of the Adur East Lions, my name is Trevor Burchell, and I have lived in Southwick and Shoreham for all my life. I have a financial services background and I played cricket for Southwick since aged fifteen until my retirement from the game – since then for many years I have been involved with Sussex hockey as an umpire/assessor and am also an umpire on the Sussex Cricket league panel. I have been a member of the Lions for the past five years and during that time, I’ve made new friends and enjoyed giving something back to the local community by helping with fundraising events, which include the Annual Donkey Derby, Christmas sleigh, street and event collections and being Santa at the local Mayberry’s Garden Centre - all monies collected are used for the benefit of the local community.

Ride and Stride Saturday 11th September 2021 Do you ever wonder why the second Saturday of September Shoreham seems full of cyclists? They don’t stay long but there are certainly more than usual. What are they doing? The answer is - they are taking part in a countrywide sponsored event organised by the Sussex Historic Churches Trust. By visiting churches by bike, (or on foot or on horseback!) and being sponsored, they raise money for a local church and the Sussex Trust. Half of the participant’s money is given to their designated church, the rest given to the Trust who will use it for grants for our Sussex Churches in desperate need of repair. Lists are published showing which churches are open’on the Ride & Stride website. Often churches offer tea and cake, opportunities to learn more about their church’s history or you can simply have a rest before setting off again. Ride and Stride is an event all ages can enjoy. Families, groups of friends, youth groups, individual cyclists or walkers can take part, enjoy some exercise and know their efforts are making a huge difference. Could you do Ride & Stride this year? Perhaps just for the morning or afternoon. Could you organise a bike ride with your friends or cycling group? Or maybe it gives you some destinations for your family bike ride. Its great fun to tick the churches off. Or, if you can’t take part, could you sponsor someone who is taking part? I have been involved for a number of years. Each Ride and Stride day is enjoyable and different. My favourite route is along the South Downs through the beautiful villages. However there are several churches open in the Shoreham area making local participation really easy. I cannot guarantee the weather

but I can guarantee a memorable day. By Philip Crompton more info, list of churches open & sponsor forms on the Trust’s website: https://www.sussexhistoricchurchestrust.org. uk sponsor forms available from philipcrompton@btinternet.com or tel 01903 232718 Or maybe you’d like to sponsor me? The General at the Ropetackle There’s a special treat in store for film goers on Sunday 5th September when Ropetackle Cinema presents the 1926 fulllength (67 minutes) classic The General at the Ropetackle Arts Centre, Shoreham-bySea.

member Colin Johnson, whose brainchild the project is, said “This will be a new experience for Mike, but when I asked him if he would be our pianist, he simply replied, ‘I’d love to!’”

And just as in cinemas around 100 years ago, the silent picture will be accompanied by a talented professional pianist - in this case talented local musician and composer Mike Hatchard. The film is one of the most revered comedies of the silent era, written by and featuring Buster Keaton, amongst the biggest Hollywood stars of all time. The General is an epic of silent comedy inspired by a real event and including an accurate historical recreation of a Civil War episode, hundreds of extras, dangerous stunt sequences, and an actual locomotive falling from a burning bridge into a gorge far below. It’s widely regarded as Keaton’s masterpiece, combining action, romance and, of course comedy; his work has aged better than that of many of his contemporaries. Mike Hatchard is a virtuoso of improvising skills and is already well-known to Ropetackle patrons as the host of the regular Sunday Jazz Breakfasts. Ropetackle Cinema committee

Mike is a phenomenally gifted composer and pianist. He has had an extraordinarily diverse career as a musician, beginning as the pianist for the National Youth Orchestra and subsequently touring America as Cleo Laine’s accompanist as a member of the Johnny Dankworth Quintet, later becoming Matt Monro’s musical director. Amongst myriad other engagements of great variety, he has also performed one-man concerts at the Purcell Room at the Southbank Centre and written three full length musicals that have been premiered at the Edinburgh Festival As per the latest Government roadmap out of lockdown, Ropetackle has re-opened fully for live events, but you are advised to consult the Covid-19 page on the ropetacklecentre.co.uk web site for the latest arrangements, and to book in advance on-line, by phoning 01273 464440 or visiting the centre at Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 5EG. Community involvement at the heart of a new vision for The Meads An important green space in the centre of Shoreham is set to benefit from new turf and improved drainage for sports activities; as well as upgraded play facilities and a plan to improve its biodiversity and wildlife value. Adur District Council is supporting a plan to upgrade The Meads Recreation Ground using natural turf and significantly improved drainage following consultation with residents. The Meads includes an unenclosed space including a children’s play area; and an enclosed section which is used by Swiss Gardens Primary School between 9am and 4pm on school days and the public the rest of the time - but it has become worn with poor grass cover and uneven surface. The District Council owns the site but leases the enclosed school field to the education authority West Sussex County Council. Working together, the authorities decided to ask local residents and the school what they wanted to see on the site. Among 265 responses, an option for a 3G pitch did attract strong support, in particular for its year-round availability for the school’s sports activities including football, rugby, cricket and athletics. However, many consultees also favoured improved turf with better drainage for the sports area; and put forward ideas and activities aimed at improving biodiversity and encouraging wildlife; including more trees and wildflower planting. Most residents said they considered The Meads as a quiet and peaceful natural space

with abundant wildlife such as bats and foxes often evident: and there was also support among allotment holders for better access, improved drainage and upgraded facilities. Adur District Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, Cllr Emma Evans, said: “We know The Meads is a much-loved and much-needed open space in Shoreham so it was only right to consult as widely as we could about future needs for the ground. “While we knew we could not satisfy every party I think we have the next solution for the majority which is a new natural surface with improved drainage for the school, continued access to the space for residents and a real emphasis on improving biodiversity, recognising the wildlife value of this important green space.” If West Sussex County Council gives the final go-ahead to fund the project the District Council will work with the school and the local community to draw up a plan to significantly enhance the entire area. As part of this approach, the intention would be to help establish a ‘Friends Group’ for The Meads to help guide the improvements and the work to enhance biodiversity.
