WHY PLANNING FOR THE 2021/22 TAX YEAR NOW IS A FANTASTIC IDEA. The 2020/21 tax year hasn’t even finished yet and while this time of the year is often associated with using up allowances before the deadline, it’s actually the perfect time to start thinking about the next 12 months.

The 2021/22 tax year starts on 6 April 2021. In some cases, leaving decisions until the last minute can make sense, but there are reasons to set out a plan at the start of a new tax year. Here are six: 1. Avoid last-minute decisions: Leaving your financial decisions until the last minute can mean you need to rush, which could lead to mistakes being made or not fully exploring all your options as you simply don’t have the time.

2. No worries about delays: Sometimes things outside of your control can have an impact on plans.

Delays with providers and other parties are one example. If you decide to invest through an ISA with just a few days to go until the new tax year, there is a risk that you’ll end up missing the deadline. It could mean paying more tax than you need to.

3. Spread your contributions across the year: If you plan to put a significant sum of money away, whether in an ISA, pension, or an investment portfolio, spreading out contributions across the full year can make it more manageable. The ISA annual allowance, for example, is £20,000. If you want to make full use of this, adding around £1,650 per month from your income or other assets can mean it becomes part of your regular outgoings rather than a lump sum. your income, but is unlikely to do so if you make a one-off contribution.

4. Benefit from interest and the compounding effect: If you’re using a cash account, such as a Cash ISA, you’ll receive interest on your contributions.

Depositing money sooner in the tax year, whether as regular contributions or a lump sum, means you have more time to benefit from interest. The compounding effect means the longer your money is held in an account, the greater the interest it will deliver over time. Although interest rates are low, over time the process can deliver sizeable benefits, especially if you’re making full use of allowances.

5. Drip feeding investments could make sense for your financial plan: Much like a cash account, spreading investments across the tax year or adding a lump sum at the beginning can mean you have longer to benefit from potential returns and the compounding effect. Investing regularly also means you’ll buy stocks and shares at different points in the market cycle. Timing the market is impossible to do consistently, so drip-feeding can help balance volatility.

6. Take the opportunity to set goals: Finally, a new tax year provides a good opportunity to review what you want to achieve in the next 12 months and beyond. It can help ensure your financial plan reflects your wider goals and will help you reach them.

Photography as a Metaphor Have you ever thought how photography and art in general, can be used as a metaphor as a means of personal expression?

The most obvious examples are uplifting images to express inner happiness or downbeat pictures to express sadness, anxiety or fear.

During lockdown, social media has been awash with documentary photographs depicting closed shops, overgrown hairdo’s and other such literal images but lockdown could also be represented by a face in a window, a withered flower or a painted rainbow. This would be a less literal way of depicting a situation we are all experiencing. This could be interpreted as visual metaphor.

I have personal photographs here which can be read by the viewer as “straight” pictures but, for me, they have deeper meaning. They are personal expressions of life. Illustrations of how life looks to me.

A photograph from the mid 90’s of my then young daughter has been manipulated in the darkroom entitled “Face on the Wall”.

The idea for the original composition was of her face offset in the frame with negative space for her to grow into as she reached adulthood was then taken a step further by including the framed image as if it hung on the wall behind her.

a metaphor for what she may achieve in life.

The ‘flipping’ of the framed photograph was to indicate her also looking back and reflecting on life.

The other image was taken at a photography festival in France. In reality, the man in the picture has no connection with the posters behind him but I see this scene as a metaphor for modern life where the two children are competing for the attention of “their Dad” who is more interested in his phone. I also like the coincidence of his green phone case matching the advertising poster.

Of course, both pictures can be interpreted in many ways by viewers depending on their own point of view. Many viewers will simply see a picture which they either like or they don’t. Others will see merit in the visual content and some will see deeper meaning but this will doubtless be an alternaThe image in the frame has been flipped.

This then became dreamlike and was, in itself tive meaning to my own. This is just one point that makes visual art so compelling.

Crocus Focus in Storrington Members of Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club planted 4,000 purple crocus corms around Storrington Memorial Pond in November and there is now a colourful reminder there of Rotary’s fight for a polio free world for everyone to enjoy.

Purple has become a symbolic colour in the global Rotary campaign to eradicate polio, inspired by the colour of the dye painted on the little finger of a child to signify they have received a potentially life-saving polio vaccine.

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years and the goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever.

As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since the first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Recently the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Africa region has officially been certified wild polio-free.

Organiser Rob von Bergen said: “The Crocuses will be a fitting annual reminder of how much work Rotary has done over the years to eradicate Polio and just now they are spreading some springtime joy”

Rotary members worldwide have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease and its advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.

Rotary Club President Pippa Davies commented: “We were delighted to plant these purple symbols of the Polio campaign at Storrington Memorial Pond and to play our part in the continuing global efforts to eradicate the disease.”

Who we are and why we love Aquaponics I first learned about Aquaponics while working in Malaysia. It is a very old technology, growing fish and plants alongside each other.

The Aztecs were able to build their empire because of the ready supply of fresh vegetables and fish which the technology allowed them! The fish act as the fuel. As they metabolise their food, they excrete ammonia which is toxic to them. In aquaponics this ammonia rich water is pumped out of their tank and into a separate tank containing plants. They do not grow in conventional soil but in a grow media. We use hydroton.

These are small clay balls with lots of tiny air pockets inside them. Inside these air pockets are naturally occurring bacteria which convert the ammonia, first into nitrites and then into nitrates. The plants then take up the nitrates to help them to grow. By the end of the process the water, which once had been filled with chemicals harmful to the fish, is now filtered and returns to the fish tank.

We currently grow sage, parsley, oregano, basil, thyme and mint. It is genuinely one of life’s small pleasures picking our herbs fresh to use in our cooking. We have cooked hasselback potatoes with sage, thyme and oregano. Enhanced our pizzas with fresh basil leaves and drink fresh mint tea in the evenings.

There is the added bonus that plants grown using aquaponics are grown organically, grow faster, grow bigger and need less space than using conventional growing. With two small children and a full-time job as a teacher I am not always the best at remembering to water Village Living Magazine April 2021

our house plants. Aquaponically grown plants kind of water themselves.

The final reason for my passion for aquaponics is its inherent innovation. From the chemistry of nitrifying bacteria, to the balancing of pH levels aquaponics, it lends itself to experimentation. While I said it has a long history, it has really only become popular again recently. The University of the Virgin Islands began pioneering the technology using modern equipment in the 1990s. The fact there are so many different foods to experiment with is really exciting.

You can keep the fish purely as ornamental or you could keep different species which can be grown for the plate. This chance for innovation and experimentation again lends itself to a school environment, newly developed exam courses which look at environmental science could be enhanced through our aquaponics systems education courses.

We live in Upper Beeding and would love to see this technology take off in people’s homes, and talked about in schools. The lockdown period has been tough, but I am so grateful for the extra time it has allowed me to firstly spend at home with my family, but secondly for the time it has allowed me to invest in this passion. As people start to hug loved ones again, shops re-open and plants show their first shoots of Spring it would be amazing to see this technology grow in the area too.

The Steyning Mint In Saxon times Steyning was a major seaport, accessible by the Adur estuary and such was the town’s importance as a trading centre that it had its own mint, making coins.

The earliest known coin that was made at Steyning is the Cnut, BMC xiv, Hild. G. One of these coins is now held in the Swedish Royal Cabinet. A person who made coins was known as a moneyer and at this time the coins were made of hammered silver.

The moneyer who manufactured this coin was PVDIA or PIDIA, which we know because it is stamped on the coin itself.

He was seceded by a maker known as Frithiwine. The laws of Athelstan passed in 928 stated that only one moneyer could manufacture coins at one time. However other moneyers were known to work at the Steyning Mint alongside Frithiwine.

The coins made by Widia and Ecrie are held in the British Museum and the Museum of Stockholm. Frithiwine made coins for King Harold I and for Harthacnut.

The moneyer began by forging the blank coins out of silver in his workshop.

He could make up to two thousand of these a day. He would then sit at a tree stump that had the lower part of a steel die set into it. A still warm coin blank would be positioned on this die and the upper steel die would be placed over it. The moneyer then had to strike the upper die with a hammer, pressing the imprints from both dies onto the silver coin. Alternatively, a large sheet of silver would be moved across the lower die and the coins punched out of it by hammering the top die down upon it.

A Saxon penny from the Steyning mint, struck in the reign of Edward the Confessor (1042-1066) Confessor, the Steyning Mint became the Royal Mint. The coins of Wulfric, marked PVLFRIC ON STE and now held at the Copenhagen Museum, were found to have originated in Steyning. Another moneyer known to have worked at the Steyning mint by the coins he made was Wulfget. Two of his are held in the British museum. Wulfric was seceded by Diorman or Dermon as coins made for the Confessor are stamped with both names. It was during this period, Edward the Confessor granted Steyning to the Abbey of Fecamp. The monks were later expelled at the insistence of Earl Godwin in 1052, When Harold II came to the throne, the financial state of England was dire and so the production of money was increased with a large number of coins produced. Such was the haste to make them, the Moneyer’s name on these coins was wrongly stamped with OM instead of ON. After the Norman Conquest the coins made for William the Conqueror bore the name DER.MON and others DR.MAN. The Mint then lost its royal status in 1086 when Steyning was returned to the Abbey of Fecamp. In the Domesday book it was recorded as being a borough and therefore had the right to mint its own coins independent of the crown. Thurbern became the latest moneyer and no coins were stuck cont/d 14

Storrington Lawn Bowling Club Centenary 1921-2021 In 1919 a strip of land fronting West Street in Storrington was bequeathed by a Mrs Knight for the purpose of creating a Social Club for the service men.

In 1920 Lt. Col. H. Ravenscroft, rented the adjacent land and had his Head Gardener and under gardener lay a four-rink bowling green. In 1921 the first Club Officers were elected and the Bowling Club formed followed by the first club competitions in 1926. Two more rinks were added in 1929 together with a new Pavilion.

Since those days various improvements were made to the green. The Pavilion and surrounds remained much the same until the 1960’s when the Pavilion was extended by adding kitchen facilities at one end.

It was in 1967 that a ladies section was formed with the founder members being Florence Farrant and Eileen Youngman.

In 1981 it was decided to extend the Pavilion to create a Gentleman’s changing room, subject to being able to raise the necessary funds by asking members to make interest free loans to the club, repayable after three years. This proved to be totally successful and we were able to refurbish the central lounge area of the Pavilion.

The club went on to become the first in West

Founding Members 1021 Sussex to install a new automatic watering system for the bowling green. The computerised unit allows the green to be watered automatically as required.

In 1986 the committee of the club heard that monies were available in the form of grants to sporting clubs in the Horsham&District area.

The club applied for a grant of £6500 which was approved by H.D.C. And enabled us to extend the Pavilion further by the addition of a ladies changing area and a refurbished kitchen.

Eight years later the ladies got their own Pavilion which was officially opened on Saturday 30th April 1994.

We have a great team of members that maintain the bowling green and buildings through out the year. Sadly in 2019 the green suffered damage from excessively wet weather conditions. At the end of the 2020 bowling season a programme of re-seeding and conditioning was started which lasted through to the Spring of 2021. The Green is now fully restored and is in excellent condition and ready for play.

In June 2020 play was allowed to resume under strict Covid guidelines.

for the reign of Henry I. None of the Abbot of Fecamp’s coins, which were minted instead, have ever been found, though it is assumed they must have existed. For the reign of William II, coins were first made by Thurbern and then Lifsi became the moneyer at the Steyning Mint.

It is speculated that Thurbern’s son, also known as Thurbern, then took over until the mint was finally closed and forgotten after seventy-five years in operation.

The existence and importance of the Steyning Mint was finally acknowledged in the second edition of Hawkins’s Silver Coins of England, published in 1876. It became officially recognised that coins marked STANINGES were made by the mint, as Steyning is recorded in the Domesday book as Staininges.
