S

outhwestern was the first law school to establish a post-J.D. program of study leading to the Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Entertainment and Media Law, designed for practicing attorneys and new law graduates who have an interest in expanding their knowledge of these industries. Under the auspices of the law school’s Donald E. Biederman Entertainment and Media Law Institute, Southwestern offers the most comprehensive entertainment and media law program in the United States. Our extensive course offerings, externships, practicums, international programs and a spectrum of cocurricular activities help prepare LL.M. students for the practice of law in the creative industries such as film, television, music, theater, advertising, sports, the news media and the internet.

The Biederman Institute’s distinguished faculty includes nine full-time professors with extensive industry experience and a roster of adjunct faculty members that reads like a “Who’s Who” of the entertainment and media law bar. The rich and varied curriculum includes nearly 60 courses, ranging from foundational subjects—such as Copyright Law, Entertainment Law and Mass Media Law—to a vast array of more specialized topics such as Financing and Distributing Independent Films, Television Production Law, The Music Publishing Industry, Drafting and Negotiating Video Game Agreements, Cyberlaw, and Amateur Sports Law. Taking full advantage of our location at the heart of the global entertainment industry, the Institute oversees a comprehensive externship program featuring over 50 settings in which students can gain invaluable real-world experience and training with companies such as Sony Pictures, NBC-Universal, Lionsgate and Warner/Chappell Music. The Institute also administers two unique entertainment practicums—one places a select group of students at private entertainment law firms in both transactional and litigation settings, and the other gives students the opportunity to provide production legal services on real movies in a classroom setting. A prestigious executive board and network of alumni occupying important corporate and law firm positions throughout the industry are also very active in serving as mentors to our students.

For students interested in studying abroad, the Biederman Institute offers an international summer program in London, England. We also offer a specialized summer program in Los Angeles. The Institute sponsors prominent speakers’ series and conferences and publishes the Journal of International Media and Entertainment Law in conjunction with the ABA Forums on Communications Law and the Entertainment and Sports Industries, as well as the Biederman Blog, a cutting-edge entertainment law blog.

We also established the nation's first LL.M. degree in entertainment and media law.

Through all of these efforts, Southwestern has earned a reputation as the law school for 3 students interested in entertainment and media law.

LL.M. PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This highly-selective graduate program has a limited enrollment and requires 24 credit hours beyond the J.D. degree. The program may be completed in one year of full-time study, or over two to four years of part-time study.

Each student has the ability to select a variety of media, entertainment and intellectual property courses, or to pursue a more focused curriculum.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

ADMISSION CRITERIA

To qualify for the LL.M. degree in Entertainment and Media Law, students must have earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent degree and complete a minimum of 24 additional credit hours; 18 credit hours must be in courses within the entertainment and media law curriculum,1 and 18 credit hours must be earned at Southwestern. Graduate students are free to elect up to 6 credits from any other courses offered by Southwestern. Students may also earn such credits by enrolling in Southwestern’s summer abroad programs in Argentina, England or Canada. Courses taken for credit toward a J.D. degree will not be counted toward the LL.M. degree.

This LL.M. program is a highly selective and rigorous course of study designed to immerse graduate students in entertainment, media, intellectual property, sports and art law. Admission is based on the applicant’s potential for distinguished performance in (and contribution to) the program, academic record, the institutions awarding the baccalaureate and law degrees, professional experience and accomplishments, recommendations, areas of interest, diversity and geographic factors.

Generally, successful applicants will have graduated within the top quarter of their law school class and performed at an honors level during their last two years of baccalaureate work.

Students may attend on either a full-time (usually completed in one year) or part-time (usually completed in two years) basis. Students enrolled in the LL.M. program must attain a cumulative grade point average of 2.33 to earn the LL.M. degree.2 A graduate student who earns 24 credits with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater, but less than 2.33, will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and may be eligible to take certain state bar examinations, and, if successful, be admitted to practice.

ENTERTAINMENT PRACTICUMS The Entertainment Law Firm Practicum exposes students to transactional or litigation practice through select field placements with private law firms.

The Entertainment Production Practicum provides students with the

opportunity to provide production business and legal affairs services on real movies, in a classroom setting under the supervision of members of the Biederman faculty. Students who have demonstrated exceptional competency and interest in media and entertainment law are selected for these courses by the Biederman Institute.

SUMMER LAW PROGRAM IN LONDON, ENGLAND Southwestern offers a unique and exciting five-week Summer Program in London, England. The International Entertainment and Media Law program offers courses in International Entertainment Law, Comparative Media Law, International Sports Law and International Art Law. This program features American and British faculty with extensive international experience and a variety of academic, cultural and social experiences: guest lectures; field excursions to legal, cultural and historical venues in and around London; and group parties and outings.

SUMMER ENTERTAINMENT LAW IN LOS ANGELES As part of the law school’s regular summer session, the Summer Entertainment Law Program in Los Angeles features a variety of courses taught by top entertainment, media and sports law attorneys; specialized externships; private tours of major motion picture and recording studios; and meetings with prominent Southwestern alumni working in the field.

The Biederman Institute is intimately connected to a plethora of

entertainment and media companies, law firms and other organizations operating in every aspect of the industry. Lawyers and executives from many of these entities participate in various elements of the Institute’s programs.

DISTINGUISHED EXECUTIVE BOARD The Biederman Institute has brought together prominent attorneys and executives from leading entertainment companies, law firms and institutions to serve on its Executive Board. The Board plays a critical role by helping to connect outstanding students with opportunities for industry experience and future job placement, shaping and focusing the curriculum, developing new programming concepts and expanding the Institute’s access to speakers and resources.

BIEDERMAN SCHOLARS The Biederman Scholars Program was created to recognize academic excellence, encourage career success and expand opportunities for future entertainment lawyers. The top performing students who are selected as Biederman Scholars are provided with mentoring opportunities, as well as special externships and placements in entertainment law firms.

JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT LAW The Institute established the Journal of International Media and Entertainment Law through a joint venture with the American Bar Association’s Forums on Communications Law and the Entertainment and Sports Industries. The first of its kind, the Journal addresses all aspects of international and comparative media and entertainment law, including topics related to content, regulation, intellectual property, distribution, publishing, Internet and technology, and transactions. Students are selected to work with the Board of E­ditors, composed of Biederman Institute faculty and members of the Forum committees, and headed

by Supervising Editor, Professor Michael Epstein.

SPEAKERS AND SYMPOSIA

Many faculty present in-class guest speakers, and Southwestern’s active Entertainment and Sports Law Society, Intellectual Property Law Society, Media Law Forum and Music Law Society host full calendars of special lectures and panel presentations in which the views of diverse experts in these fields are presented.

Southwestern also hosts the annual Southern California Entertainment Law Career Day featuring panel discussions on a rich variety of topics as well as opportunities for students to network with executives from major television, movie and recording studios, law firms and talent agencies.

The Biederman Institute’s “Conversation With…” series features prominent publishers, television and film producers, and senior counsel for entertainment and media enterprises, as well as public officials involved with the entertainment and media industries. The Institute regularly cosponsors symposia with the Entertainment and Intellectual Property Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the Los Angeles Copyright Society, the Media Law Resource Center and other organizations. In addition, the Institute conducts continuing legal education courses on entertainment and media law issues for alumni and other practitioners in California and major cities throughout the world.

ENTERTAINMENT AND IP ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Southwestern’s Entertainment and Intellectual Property Law Alumni Association (SWEIP) was launched in 2011 to bring together Southwestern alumni who are currently working in the fields of entertainment and/or IP transaction law or litigation; those who work for an entertainment company or entertainer; and/or those who work as a creative person in the entertainment industry. SWEIP serves as a way to facilitate interactions between Southwestern alumni and the entertainment business, legal and creative communities. In addition to supporting programs and events focused on entertainment and intellectual property issues, SWEIP serves as a liaison between Southwestern alumni and students.
