The world’s biggest inflatable obstacle course lands in Surrey Quays for family festival Monstrous on July 29. The Beast is the ultimate bouncy castle at 272metres long. THREE BILLBOARDS ON THE ROOF The Rooftop Cinema in Peckham is screening Camberwell-born filmmaker Martin McDonaugh’s Oscarwinning Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri on August 1 (8:45pm) as part of its Women in Film series. FOOTBALL’S still COMING HOME

Artist Gustavo Nénão has added to the graffiti in Waterloo’s Leake St Tunnel with a timely new World Cup themed urban artwork depicting England football player Harry Kane. Last month marked phase one of the opening of the Leake Street Arches. Eight former railway arches next to the famous Graffiti Tunnel in Waterloo have been brought back to life with a collection of independent bars, restaurants and entertainment spaces.

The pull of Gravity

C

ircus wonders from Down Under, Gravity and Other Myths, return to the Southbank Centre this summer with a new show all about strength, writes Laura Burgoine...

Jascha Boyce and her fellow performers met while growing up and attending the recreational circus school Cirkids in Adelaide.

“I started at Cirkids at 4 and that’s where I met the rest of the group. We’ve known each other since we were about 8 or 9 years old,” Jascha told the Weekender.

After graduating high school, the acrobatic Aussies formed Gravity and Other Myths. “We

were part of the performing troupe of Cirkids, and we’d performed at the Adelaide fringe and done some corporate gigs around Adelaide so we decided to keep working together,” the performer said.

“We made our first show Freefall together not expecting it to be our fulltime thing. We were studying and this was

kind of a side thing.”

In 2013, they took the show to Edinburgh Fringe where they met their agent. “And that’s when it all started. We began touring fulltime in 2014 and haven’t really stopped. It’s pretty crazy; we spend 10-11 months of the year on the road,” Jascha said.

show is the UK premiere of Backbone: a high octane exploration of the limits of collective human strength and connectedness. The acrobats spend around three hours training before every show, and on non-performing days will be working for about five or six hours.

“Backbone is very different

from A Simple Space, which we performed at the Underbelly a few years ago but in some ways it’s very similar,” Jascha said. “It’s a much bigger scale show, more production, more people on stage. We have incredible lighting design.”

She describes the performance style as “very honest and real.”

“It does explore some deeper themes. It examines strength: physical, emotional, personal, collective, and internal.”

otherhithe’s Brunel Tunnel is going back to the Bare Necessities with a new production of the Jungle Book.

Abiku Theatre Company’s Mowgli brings Rudyard Kipling’s original tale to the world’s oldest underwater tunnel.

The coming of age story follows orphan Mowgli, who has been raised by wolves but is forced to leave the only home and family he knows when his mortal enemy -a tiger- arrives in the jungle.

“We have a cast of eight people, and some original music,” actor Paul Robinson, who plays Baloo/ Jayesh, told the Weekender. “It’s

not a musical; it’s a play with music.”

“It’s very atmosphere in the tunnel, great for music, acoustics are excellent and audiences will be close to the actors in the oldest underwater tunnel in the world.”

This is the play’s premiere, directed by Abiku’s founder/ director Jessica Jane alongside Joe Newton.

All eyes on Underbelly's Peepshow Underbelly Festival celebrates its 10th year at the Southbank this glorious summer, writes Katie Kelly...

A mini fringe festival by the river, it is a fun and welcome addition to the traditional theatre scene. Circa company are old friends of Underbelly and have made the long trip from down under a number of times. Their reputation precedes them and the Spielgeltent was packed for their Peep Show on Tuesday night.

I’m not a huge fan of the overly risqué and so the title was slightly off putting, despite my love of this art form. This is not by any means voyeuristic entertainment, which might be disappointing to some, but an encouragement to anyone with slightly younger viewers to accommodate. Instead, it is playful and funny and, most importantly, hugely impressive.

In fact, in a year when we have heard a lot about women as victims it was life affirming to see the whole cast embrace the sequin shorts, women displaying

awesome physical strength, and working with their male fellow performers in such an equal and impressive way.

The audience’s gasps of astonishment started early and continued throughout this varied and, at times, beautiful performance. There’s quite a lot of theory written in the programme about the concept for the show and if I am honest, it went pretty much over my head, both in the writing and the reality.

I was reminded of the ‘twiddly bits’ that gymnasts do in their

floorshows to fill time, and to help recover between the really impressive tumbles. Perhaps this is a woeful display of ignorance but don’t let it put you off.

These artists are extraordinary examples of what the human body is capable of.

Bermondsey Street’s Village East is heating up with resident DJs hitting the decks on the second Friday of every month.

Village Vinyl celebrates the superior sound quality of vinyl in Village East’s Manhattan inspired space. There’s no entry fee all night, and extended opening hours.

Musical theatre group Collabro shot to fame after winning the eighth season of ITV talent show Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) in 2014, writes Laura Burgoine...

Now, they’re hanging out with Cliff Richard and opening for Barry Manilow’s arena tour.

Jamie Lambert talks to the Weekender ahead of performing at Greenwich’s O2 arena.

“Musical theatre speaks to so many people,” Jamie said. “We have a massive range of people come to our shows. Sometimes a granddaughter, mother, and daughter because the music spans generations.”

in August 2014 and debuted at number one in the UK. Now, the band is back in the studio working on their fourth album: Road to the Royal Albert Hall, which they’ll be taking on the road for a 51-date tour in 2019. “The tour ends at the Royal Albert Hall. We’ve headlined there a few times. It’s fabulous, the most wonderful place and such a historic venue” Jamie said.

The new album features music from Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Billy Elliot, and Grease. “There’s every major musical you can think of and Never Enough from the Greatest Showman,” Jamie said.

“We’re very proud of it.”

Early on, the band did some pop crossovers before returning to their musical theatre roots.

They founded their own record label Peak Productions in 2017,

when they released their third album Home. “We have a lot more control with our own record label,” Jamie said. “We were the only artists who self-released and ended up in the top ten on the charts. This time it’s not as chart focused, it’s more part of a big tour. We wanted to do an album that complemented the tour.”

Jamie’s personal favourite musical is Les Miserables. “We’ve done every song from Les Mis. We sang Stars in our first audition for Britain’s Got Talent, then Bring Him Home for the semi-finals.

Now we have On my Own on the new album.”

Collabro paved the way for musical theatre groups the world over. “Since we came out, various musical theatre groups have come out. It’s something

the industry was waiting for,” Jamie said. “Il Divo were more opera. The, stars all lined up, and four years down the road, we’re making our fourth major album.”

The band only formed one month before their audition for Britain’s Got Talent. “Originally we planned to perform on cruises but we needed a bigger audience.

Since we’ve done it, there’s a lot of cruise ship groups who do the same,” Jamie said.

Collabro’s first ever rehearsal space was in the rooms above the Miller pub in London Bridge.

“They were really nice to us.

We hired the space to rehearse because we didn’t live in the same area; we all took a week off work, and met there,” Jamie said.

“We had our first ever photoshoot there. The people were lovely.

Sometimes they’d come up and listen to us.”

Two years ago the band met Cliff Richard who asked them to special guest on his summer tour.

“Now Cliff just turns up randomly to our gigs,” Jamie said. “We did a residency at Pizza Express and one night Cliff turned up backstage and surprised us. And we went to a house party his friend had organised and Tony Blair rocked up.”

Next up, the quartet is joining Copacabana singer and music legend Barry Manilow on his arena tour in September. “It’s super cool,” Jamie said. “I’ve always really admired Barry.”

“Barry’s huge, we were super keen,” he continued. “He’s so busy and ridiculously famous.

We’re in awe. We’re playing shows at Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, and then three nights at the O2 arena, so we’re really excited for that.”

Collabro is the special guest at Manilow-Live in London at the O2 arena on September 6, 7 and 8.

A trio just out of this world...

arriet Mackenzie lives in Brockley and grew up with a father obsessed with opera “listening to wonderful opera singers such as Caruso”, writes Michael Holland...

She was “very lucky to be taken to lots of concerts and be exposed to the incredible canon of chamber music: Beethoven and Mozart String quartet, Ravel...I loved the sense of a door opening on this extraordinary aural landscape and being taken somewhere totally different. I wish that more children had this opportunity,” Ms Mackenzie told the Weekender.

“I was obsessed with the sound of the violin and from the age of three I campaigned my parents to be able to start learning it!” The teacher, Shelia Nelson, had a long waiting list but Harriet was able to start her training at five. That little girl in love with the violin went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity Laban where she met Meg Hamilton (viola), and Milos Milivojevic (accordion) and the three musicians decided to form the Kosmos Ensemble.

“We thought it would be wonderful to play together, to explore the sounds, to study different traditions and styles from

around the globe, to compose and to improvise with these influences. Having had a totally ‘classical’ training, I had never improvised. Suddenly I found myself on stage with Kosmos but without sheet music, playing our own compositions, and improvising using our classical training and composition techniques with roots music as our inspiration,” Harriet said. “I was deliriously happy and terrified in equal measure but when the lights dim and the audience is waiting expectantly, there is nothing quite like the frisson of composing in real time in front of a discerning crowd.”

Ten years on, Kosmos have explored Balkan music, Arabic music, Japanese folk songs, Gypsy music, jazz, and have recorded two albums whilst performing all over the world and in places that have little access to live music: prisons, special schools, mainstream schools and homes for older people.

Now the trio are once again returning to Rotherhithe’s St Mary’s Church playing a special fundraiser gig for the Tuned In London series.

The proceeds from this concert will fund the band’s next album.

Harriet says: “It is a beautiful church with great acoustics and

a uniqueatmosphere; there is something very special about performing in an intimate church such as this.”

“I gave a candlelit concert there as part of the Tuned In series in December,” she continued. “In any concert, the energy that the audience brings is very important but in an intimate setting like this,

one can really feel it and this has a particularly strong effect when we are improvising and directly responding to that energy.”

Next time, Harriet tells me, Kosmos will be playing something very different. “There are so many emotions that we go through in one evening - from a moving piece about a Serbian soldier who has lost

talkers, robbers, cheaters, bullies, divas, murderesses, and manipulative socialites: these are just some of the characters Hollywood legend Joan Crawford played throughout her 40 year career and yet her work was often overshadowed by her real-life drama.

The BFI Southbank is showcasing the breadth of the actress’ talent and celebrating her enduring career as part of a two month season Fierce: the Untameable Joan Crawford, writes Laura Burgoine...

Running from 1 August – 9 October the season includes 20 of Crawford’s best-loved films.

BFI programmer Anna Bogutskaya is very excited for the season. “I’m a big fan of Joan but her life and romances and feuds really overshadowed her work,” Anna told the Weekender. “In this season, I wanted to look at the films that were strategic career moves and ask: what was she trying to do here?”

“She was the Madonna of her time,” Anna continued.

“She was not the most beautiful, or the most beloved, but she was so smart. How can you stay relevant and on top of your career for so many decades? She had a nose for the industry.”

“She turned to horror films because I think she saw the commercial appeal of that genre. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane is scary, terrifying and beautiful.”

As a businesswoman, Joan was “incredibly smart,” Anna said. “As a woman working at that time in Hollywood, she could really navigate it,” Anna said. “She wanted to understand every part of the business. That dedication and savvy is what I wanted to highlight in this season.”

The actress’ ability to constantly adjust herself was perhaps the key to the longevity of her career. “In her 20s she was a flapper, when she got older she was this perfectly well

Two of the films in the season: The Women and Mildred Pierce are being re-released in selected cinemas across the UK from 17 August. It was Crawford’s comeback role in the 1945 Mildred Pierce that won her an Oscar.

“It’s interesting to see The Women and Mildred Pierce together because they’re such different roles that Joan plays,” Anna said. “The Women is an ensemble piece where she’s this perfect, catty, social climbing character. Mildred is flawed but profound, a hardworking, ambitious woman and it’s incredibly powerful.”

Anna referred to the recent BBC Two mini-series Feud: Bette and Joan, a behind the scenes saga following Bette Davis and Joan Crawford’s ongoing rivalry. “Those stories, particularly Joan’s, were about actresses at the top of their game who weren’t getting work.

she was, Joan went out and created these roles for herself. She would find these roles that would make her relevant,” Anna said.

Crawford had a very public, tumultuous personal life, which included four marriages, and a highly publicised falling-out with two of her children, including

Christina, who wrote the tell-all memoir Mommie Dearest.

At the beginning of the film season, on Saturday 4 August, the BFI is hosting a special event: An Afternoon with Joan Crawford. “This is a way of introducing people to her life and career with a series of talks,” Anna said. “We’re looking at the different facets of Joan, as an ‘it’ girl, and then all the trends she

adjusted herself to. It’s a fun way to interact with someone who is classical Hollywood.”

heatre Deli is launching an annual national festival for families, and the young at heart, in Burgess Park.

Rain or Shine runs in Camberwell’s Burgess Park through to the end of August and includes theatre, circus, storytelling, and workshops for all ages.

Artistic Director Jessica Brewster said Theatre Deli connects with new audiences by offering familyfocused theatre in easily accessible, community spaces, while also giving emerging artists the opportunity to create new work for children, which they can tour nationally.

“We are delighted to have received support from Arts Council England and our local partners to allow us to offer the whole festival as paywhat-you-decide, making the work accessible to more people based in the communities we are serving,” Jessica said.

The festival features a number of Theatre Deli supported artists and highlights the organisation’s ongoing

Eighteen massive dinosaur animatronics and TV presenter Michaela Strachan will be coming to the O2 with Walking with Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular.

The most recent version of the show includes changes to the dinosaurs, since scientific research has provided more insight into what the creatures looked like, including brighter colours and potential feathers.

The show, which lasts 100 minutes, includes interactions between the dinosaurs and the changing climate from the arid Triassic period to the greener Jurassic. Huxley the paleontologist, played by Michaela Strachan, helps guide viewers along.

The rest of the production team includes names such as Scott Faris, who has directed Broadway shows such as Les Misérables, Cabaret, Cats, and Grease, and Sonny Tilders, who has designed creatures and animatronics for Star Wars and The Chronicles of Narnia.

“Many of the technologies we are using on Walking with Dinosaurs are borrowed from film,” said Sonny Tilders. “To make it appear that these creatures are flesh

and blood weighing six, eight or even 20 tons, we use a system called ‘muscle bags,’ made from stretch mesh fabric and filled with polystyrene balls, stretched across moving points on the body. These contract and stretch in the same manner that muscle, fat, and skin does on real creatures.”

“The puppeteers use ‘voodoo rigs’ to make many of the dinosaurs move,” Tilders continued. “They are miniature versions of the dinosaurs with the same joints and range of movement as their lifesized counterparts.”

“The puppeteer manipulates the voodoo rig, and these actions are interpreted by computer and transmitted by radio waves to make the hydraulic cylinders in the actual dinosaur replicate the action, with a driver hidden below the animal, helping to maneuver it around the arena.”

The largest dinosaur is the Brachiosaurus, which is 11m in height and 17m long, with each large dinosaur requiring three people to operate it.

Youaremine will be presenting their piece The Runner that was commissioned as part of Theatre Deli’s artistic residency programme and first staged at Theatre Deli’s Beyond Borders Festival, a week of theatre and music in line with Refugee Week 2018.

In Burgess Park, the festival culminates with an outdoor celebration hosted by Mandinga Arts, a Southwark-based company who will be providing free workshops in circus, choreography and drumming.

There will also be walkabout performances from Terebac Theatre and Louise Bland. Audiences are invited to bring a picnic and enjoy a day in the park.

Legoland Windsor has opened its first ever beach (don’t worry, it’s not made of plastic bricks) as part of its two-month long Summer of Fun. There will be beach parties built just for kids at the 10m long sandy beach, with activities for all of the family.

It has also unveiled its first ever 20 tonne sand sculpture of a family of huge Lego Minifigures enjoying the beach.

Families can enjoy the new attraction on deckchairs or blankets and cool down with an ice cream from the ice cream stand.

There are also plenty of watery activities to help families stay cool, including Splash Safari, Drench Towers and Pirate Falls.

Fastlove, a tribute to late pop star George Michael, will be running at the Lyric Theatre West End this autumn.

The tribute show will feature hits such as Father Figure, Jesus to a Child, Freedom, I’m Your Man, Wake Me Up, and Faith.

New for the 2018 shows, Ed Barker, who performed the saxophone solo in Cowboys and Angels on George Michael’s ‘Symphonica Tour’ in 2012, will join for select tour dates.

George Michael rose to fame in the duo Wham! before becoming a solo artist in the 1980s and 1990s.

He was found dead on Christmas Day in 2016.

Be sun savvy this summer

T

he recent spell of hot weather has made those of us who love the sun very happy. But remember – you need to stay safe in the heat.

A sunhat, preferably one with a wide brim or a long flap at the back, will protect your child’s head and neck from the sun. You and your baby should both drink plenty of fluids so you don’t get dehydrated.

Older people also need to take particular care in the heat especially if they suffer from health conditions such as heart or breathing problems. So think about checking up on friend, relative and neighbour when temperatures rise. You can help out by making sure they have food, plenty of cold drinks and the medications they need. Offer to shop for them so they don’t have to go out in the heat and make sure their rooms are kept cool.

Rent a dog by the hour Meet Kennington's new therapy dogs

D

og-lovers can rent a pooch by the hour with Kennington local Dawn Bartlett’s new therapy company Cuddlemutts, writes Laura Burgoine...

Cuddlemutts provide home or office visits from canine companions, which has proven as a form of therapy that can help combat depression and loneliness, particularly in the elderly and people managing mental wellbeing.

“Touching and being near animals lowers blood pressure, boosts dopamine [the “feel good” brain chemical] serotonin, and Oxytocin,” Dawn told the Weekender. “It lowers stress. Particularly the action of stroking a dog has been shown to have positive effects for people.”

While volunteering at Blue Cross Animal Hospital, Dawn learned how dogs can help anxiety, depression, loneliness and improve physical health. “We offer dog companionship and also promote wellbeing in the workplace with visits from our dogs,” she said.

Dawn herself is part of the service, as she brings the dog and offers companionship to the people she visits. “I think much of the time, people, whatever they are struggling with, just want to be listened to,” she said. “I am a good listener with first rate people skills and compassion and empathy, focusing on the need for good self care for wellbeing.”

“I have also been a carer much of my life to my family and pop stars!” the PR and marketing consultant said.

“There are plenty of practical reasons people can’t keep dogs in London,” she continued. This is a way to borrow some of the benefits. “You can take the dogs for a walk and get some exercise, I can bring them into businesses, which has proven to boost productivity, they’re a mood elevator, and benefit your overall health and wellbeing.”

“They’re small and not intimidating and they give back tenfold,” she said.

The business idea stemmed from Dawn’s dog-walking and dog-sitting business, which she runs alongside her marketing and PR company. For people who aren’t allowed to keep animals in their flats, or don’t want to commit to the responsibility of a fulltime pet, Cuddlemutts is a good compromise. “Parents can rent a dog for an hour for their children,” Dawn said.

The eventual goal is to create a Cuddlemutts café. In the meantime, Dawn is seeking funding to be able to deliver Cuddlemutts services to people in need.

Prices start from £40 for a onehour visit for individuals and children’s parties. Prices are negotiable for larger groups and corporate visits.

hen you’re in a gastronomic hub like Brixton Village and really spoilt for choice you should be a little more selective. writes Michael Holland...

Federation

In amongst all that quantity there will be quality that needs seeking out. We found it at Federation where an enthusiastic and happy staff instantly drew me and Kay into their vibe so that we felt like family straightaway.

Federation is about good coffee, good beer, the best coffee-based cocktails this side of coffee, and bar snacks that were the opposite end of the spectrum to ‘perfunctory’.

Someone famously said, “life’s too short to stuff tomatoes”.

Federation obviously disagree, which means we enjoyed and experienced the lovely little plates and dishes created by people with passion.

And I don’t say that lightly.

Federation grated the beetroot before pickling it properly.

Delicious. Federation, for our delectation, sliced fennel, pickled it and dusted it with a sprinkling of herbs. The crushed avocado and chili was a bit special, and the artichoke and butter bean concoction was something so good I can’t put it into words.

I would not be messed about like that indoors, and I don’t know anyone who would, so Federation should be hailed as heroes - or at least pioneers of pushing at the boundaries of Epicurean delights. I am so glad Federation enlightened us to the fact that mundane veg and pulses can be marvelous, because they were a fantastic accompaniment to the excellent charcuterie. I don’t know how the pigs were treated before they became a meat platter, but I’m guessing Federation checked that they lived the life of Riley.

Scott, our Host with the Most is to blame for all this verbose loquaciousness. He told us all about the coffee at Federation; he told us the name of the coffee farmer in South America they buy from; he knew the name of the man who picks the beans, the man who delivers it to the airport, and the lady who roasts it once it has landed in the UK. We were mesmerised.

I was hypnotised with the whole story.

Then: “Try this Michael,” he whispered, like the Child Catcher in that old film. It was an Old-Fashioned with espresso that came with Scott’s instructions about when to add the coffee and eat the fossilized orange! As soon as I finished it I wanted another, and another one.

All the while I was getting a coffee habit, Kay was having an affogato (sponge fingers and ice-cream). Good ice cream. Making anything other than good ice cream should be a criminal offence, and this was good, as I found out when Kay couldn’t eat it all. The sponge fingers weren’t very spongy, but who cares? And, I almost forgot, it came with some Marsala, which is worth a mention.

But I was still under the spell of Scott, who had by now lured me in to an Espresso Martini.

Phew! That was nice. The sugar in it is sourced from a small farmer in Costa Rica!

What! If that Martini could talk it would’ve said, “That’s the best six quid you’ve ever spent, Holland!”

Federation has no straws; every bit of packaging is recyclable; they are fair traders, they are helping the planet in their small way and I think we should all help them help the planet.

We really enjoyed our couple of hours in Brixton; we loved the staff, and their passion for good customer service, and, of course, for the good eats and drinks.

Places like Federation are the future. Or should be. I’d vote for the Federation Generation.
