COSI NIGHT OUT The Dulwich Opera Company is bringing Mozart’s Così fan tutte to West Dulwich’s All Saints Church. Canada Water group Herbs and Spaces is calling on volunteers to help the local community gardening initiative grow.

Herbs and Spaces will allow people to pick their own fresh herbs – including parsley, mint, and rosemary- for free from public planters around Greenland Dock. The group, led by local Fredy Vasilev, has just secured funding to set up the initiative, and been given the go ahead from Southwark Council.

Volunteers are needed to water the planters daily, and to weed.

Dulwich Picture Gallery has announced its 2019 exhibition programme, which will introduce the Norwegian artist Harald Sohlberg to the UK, highlight the printmaking of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art and present a new way of looking at Rembrandt and his use of light. The year will also see the return of the Dulwich Pavilion, which will be constructed in the spring and open to the public throughout the summer.

Thriving on a life of excess

When we spoke to Doug, he was in Canada for the first leg of his 2018 tour, awaiting his UK visa. “I had to apply for my UK visa through some express service. I’ve been given a number to call but I can’t get through to anyone. It’s full-on Kafka sh*t,” he says, in his signature satirical, fed-upwith-the-system fashion.

Doug has been a comedian for decades and is known for his risqué humour. Many would be quick to call out some of his former sketches as anti-semitic or homophobic – particularly by today’s standards. Has he felt the need to adapt his work to suit the tastes of a more PC society?

“I’ve changed small things, like I don’t say faggot anymore. But I haven’t changed on account of anyone else.”

I asked Doug if there are any taboos he considers to be off-limits for his comedy. “No, absolutely not! I cover the topics that interest me. Even your cleanest comics, when they’re sitting around in the green room, the humour is always at the darkest possible and I don’t get why it’s often kept in the green room. For me, that’s the stuff I bring on stage.”

I push a bit further, is there really nothing, though? “I wouldn’t make fun of the King of Thailand when I was in Thailand, because it’s illegal and you go to Thai prison for it. So let’s just

D

oug Stanhope, the outspoken and controversial comedian from Arizona, is bringing his taboo-ridden show to Brixton’s O2 Academy as part of his UK tour. He’s worked with the likes of Charlie Brooker and is friends with Johnny Depp – who wrote the forward to one of his books. There’s barely a wince-worthy topic Doug hasn’t touched in his comedy: suicide bombing, rape, paedophillia – you name it.

His humour isn’t for everyone, but it would be hard not to see the sheer brilliance in some of his lengthy, eloquent anti-establishment rants. The Weekender caught up with Doug ahead of his upcoming gig.

say anything that will get me thrown into a Thai prison I would not do. That is, until I get out of Thailand…”

Doug’s latest book This Is Not Fame: A “From What I Re-Memoir” came out in December last year. It’s described as a story of overcoming a life of excess, immorality, and reckless buffoonery – a description which Doug laughs at when I quiz him on it. “The way you say overcoming makes it sound like I don’t do any of those things anymore – thriving on a life of excess would be more accurate. It’s basically a lot of road stories with a vague throughline.”

This Is Not Fame isn’t Doug’s first book. In 2016, the comedian released a book Digging Up Mother, A Love Story, about his mother’s suicide as an elderly woman, which Doug – who was very close to his mother – was present for. The forward for the book was written by Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, who in recent years

has struck up a friendship with Doug.

“He was a fan initially,” Doug explains. “He called me up and told me I was great and you don’t argue with that.”

Doug was briefly swept up into the high-profile and tumultuous break-up between Johnny and his ex-wife Amber Heard, who threatened to file a lawsuit against the comedian for saying “defamatory” things about her and claiming she was blackmailing Johnny. “She tried to sue me in my own hometown over no case whatsoever,” says Doug. If she’d gone through with it, it would have been hilarious – I would have got sh*t loads of material out of it.”

During the time of the 2016 presidential campaign, Doug joked on stage that things would be more interesting if Donald Trump won, but does the comic still feel that way a year and a half into his presidency?

“Was I wrong? If anything, I think I’ve been proven right! Things are

certainly more interesting with him in power. We might have to suffer for four years, but it also might disrupt everything for the better.” I remind Doug that Trump is due to come to the UK this summer. “Yeah?

Well I bet he’ll have a much easier time with his passport than I’ve had.”

Since he began working as a comedian in 1990, Doug’s acts have often involved him coming on stage with a drink or cigarette (or both) in hand. “I still booze on stage. I don’t think I hit the stage with less than four or five drinks in me,” he says.

“However, I don’t smoke on stage anymore. When I’d smoke on stage and other people couldn’t, I could feel a shift as soon as I’d light up a cigarette. Non smokers are bummed out because you’re smoking and smokers are bummed because you’re smoking and they can’t.”

If you’ve booked a ticket to Doug’s Brixton gig but are unfamiliar with his work, don’t expect any gushy

comments about how happy he is to be here. Doug is vocal about his dislike of the UK, and in Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe (2013) he makes a hilarious plea to us Brits to understand America and all its benefits. So how does he feel about returning to our shores for this leg of his tour? “I have the same sense of dread I always have before going [to the UK]. I don’t like the old sh*t. It’s mossy, ugly and cold even when it’s meant to be warm,” he says.

Finally, what can we expect from his upcoming gig? “The only goal I have is to talk a lot of sh*t about the King of Thailand,” he says. “If you’re coming because you like what I do, you’ll get your money’s worth.”

A load of Malarkey Actor shows his musical side at new London Bridge venue

V

ampire Diaries TV star turned emoindie musician Michael Malarkey is playing at the Omeara as part of his European tour.

Raised in America, but a long time London resident, Michael is playing at the new Flat Iron Square venue on June 15. Besides working on multiple acting projects in the past few months – such as TV series The Oath with 50 Cent, and Blue Book on The History Channel – Michael has also been working on an album.

“I actually was a musician before I started acting,” said Michael. “It’s not really a jump to music then, since I have been doing it all along. I only started going public with my songs a few years ago.”

Before his acting and music career, Michael worked in a record store in Ohio for six years. Since this was an era prior to the rise of

internet chat rooms solely dedicated to swapping music recommendations and finding new artists, his job was to discover new, up-and-coming music before it became popular.

“It was actually called Dingleberry’s Record Store, you can look it up,” joked Michael. “I wrote a lot of music there after hours. You know, lock the doors, write some lyrics. My friends would sometimes come by – we’d smoke cigarettes, maybe drink a little whiskey, and work on our songs.”

Michael’s band at the time was part of the hardcore scene, but his most recent album is better described as indie-folk. “I find it difficult to pinpoint genres, especially when it’s your own music,” Michael said. “I guess you could say my work is more of an emo-indie thing: something moody, but masculine, with

an element of storytelling. Or ‘music for husbands,’ as I like to call it.”

His most recent single Captain Solitaire has elements of electronic bass. Michael also foreshadowed that his music in the future would be moving away from the singersongwriter vibe. Instead, he has been experimenting with tracks featuring drum and bass, brighter sounds, and more danceable beats.

“Even though I don’t have a Mohawk anymore, my heart has a Mohawk,” quipped Michael. He said that he still handwrites all of his lyrics: a homage to the DIY spirit and the unique personality found in old punk records.

A romp that bodes well

s You Like it’, the first production under Michelle Terry’s watch as artistic director, is a highly theatrical romp and bodes well, considering the competence and versatility of the ensemble, for the rest of the season.

Very ably directed by Frederay Holmes and Elle While and, on a stage completely devoid of scenery, we were transported from Duke Senior’s court to the forest of Arden, visually distinguishable only by the quick-change, reversible costumes of the cast. The only other visual aids were a red rope manipulated by the characters to mount a wrestling match between Orlando and Charles, early in the first act, and the voluminous skirt of the goddess Hymen, hiding Rosalind and Celia and falling away as she rises into the heavens at the beginning of the ending.

It was slick, funny and had some brilliant theatrical moments, for example, the sheep driven in by Sylvius and Phoebe and Jacques’ shocked cry as he suddenly noticed the “circle of fools” surrounding him.

Gender fluidity, already present in the play, was raised to new heights with Rosalind being played by a man (Jack Laskey) who then dressed up as a man and Orlando being played by a woman. Sign language featured very largely as Celia was played by Nadia Nadarajah and this translation worked very well and often added to the humour and pathos, due to Nadia’s highly animated performance Helen Schlesinger, as the two Dukes (amongst other parts) was striking, commanding the stage with

rage of good humour as the role required. Richard Katz (Rosalind) was particularly good but all the principles acquitted themselves well.

Special mention must go to the ‘clowns’, however. Pearce Quigley as Jacques was dapper in his black velvet suit and delightfully lugubrious.

Starting the iconic “All the world’s a stage“ speech with a mouthful of banana was inspired and led the audience into the famous set piece with delight.

Colin Hurley as Touchstone looked wonderful and sounded better and his scenes with Audrey (James

Garnon), also perfectly costumed, well-timed and the crowd loved them.

The music added useful clues to the action and supported the lyrical voice of Tanika Yearwood and, as always at The Globe, led us into the final happy dance which sent us all out, laughing, cheering and clapping.

An excellent start!

Get into gear with all things bikes A

weekend celebrating the culture of bikers and motorbikes in art, live music, movies and machines is coming to Bermondsey.

The Losers MCC V Underdogs Custom Show weekender celebrates the culture of motorbikes with curated art, photography, custom motorcycles, live music and classic biker film screenings.

For this year’s show, Losers MCC- mild mannered bikers from The Old Kent Road - have created a homage to New Cross’s former Speedway stadium with poster art, which delves into the history and background stories from the stadium’s glory days. This will displayed along with a screening of Bafta award nominated 1948-speedway film, ‘Once a Jolly Swagman’. Much of the footage was filmed at New Cross Stadium.

Plus, an exclusive film screening of the Italian classic biker movie,’Engaged To Death’. This lovingly restored film features real races and motorcycle champions from the 1950s. Both films will be shown Sunday 10th June from 1pm.

The weekend gets into gear on Friday 8 June, with ‘Oh! Gunquit - a London based 5-piece, with support from Noir Mates. Losers MCC, Mad Dog and Brother of Pearl provide the soundtrack throughout the night, playing garage, rockabilly, glam, punk and rock ’n’ roll.

Kick starting Saturday 9 June is Lo Chief, a heavy groove psych

quartet conceived on the muddy banks of the Thames Delta, and blues rock inspired duo, Leontas and more.

Over the weekend, a selection of invited bikes will be displayed, the Losers MCC will be displaying their 1950s’ Trojan mini motor, fresh

from the Santa Pod Raceway, and a newly recommissioned, 1970s’ Weslake speedway bike.

NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is seeking four people to join our Engagement and Patient Experience Committee (EPEC) to monitor and support the CCG to engage patients, ensuring statutory duties and best practice are met. EPEC provides assurance to our Governing Body.

EPEC is chaired by the CCG’s lay member for patient and public involvement and meets six times a year for three hours per meeting, alternating afternoon and evenings. Membership includes a GP clinical lead for engagement, CCG officers, Healthwatch Southwark and the Forum for Equality and Human Rights in Southwark and local people.

Frankie McGowan on her new novel F

rankie McGowan is a journalist and former magazine editor. She has written short stories for a variety of magazines, including Women’s Own and The Lady, as well as longer novels for Endeavour Media. Female authors often still find their work labelled as ‘women’s fiction’, which seems like a pretty vague umbrella term. Do you find this label limiting when it’s used to describe your own work, or do you embrace it? Do you think it’s a trend that’s set to change When the phrase is used in

a dismissive way, or hear men imply that women fiction writers can’t deliver the level of important insights in fiction as male writers do, I most certainly do not embrace it. God no. But while I don’t have any problem with my books being seen as ‘women’s fiction,’ I do have difficulty, in trying to understand the logic behind segregating it in such a way, while there are shelves full of sci-Fi and crime, dominated by brilliant women writers all of which are bought by men without, as far as I’m aware, any incidence reported of any one of them going into a decline as a result of not being told a woman was involved in its creation?

Books such as the huge international bestseller Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine are highlighting the modern epidemic of loneliness in our society. This is something that you highlight through the character of Elena, who

I don’t, but some people think I do. Oddly usually it’s asked by someone noted for drinking. But then most of my friends are writers or journalists, so plenty of choice there. \nyway, I wouldn’t because a) I’ve never met a real person who met all the criteria I was looking for in a character and b) I don’t fancy the fall out if the character was nasty. I’ve never subscribed to the belief of some writers who think everyone is fair game if you’re a writer. They’re not.

although fabulous and larger-than-life in her old age, has been somewhat forgotten by her family and community, despite the extraordinary things she’s been through. Is this an issue that concerns you?

It should concern everyone. But it’s not always easy to help. In A Single Journey, Elena treasures her independence, and her pride stops her from coming straight out with it, that she needs a bit of support. Personally, I think it should be compulsory for schools to start telling kids that along with how to combat bullying and the perils of sexting, loneliness is far more likely to afflict them at some point in their life and start telling them how to deal with it.

Location plays a key role in the book. What made you choose London and Berlin as the central cities of the novel?

Having been born, brought up, educated and always worked in

London, I didn’t have to research that bit which is always a huge incentive for any project, but Berlin was pure chance. I was visiting my husband working on location there and sitting in a cafe in Hackeshe Hofe while someone was telling me how so many Berliners after WW2, had to live in bombed buildings, just scrawling their names in chalk on whatever bit of doorway they could find, so anyone trying to find them could. I sort of used that as a starting point. Sorry, wish it was more exciting. No old Russian woman sitting at next table, telling me her life story. If only.
