By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Sparks flew when a brazen thief tried to steal Labour MP Helen Hayes’ bicycle in broad daylight using a power tool last Wednesday week, June 15.

The next general election will take place on January 24, 2025 at the latest, but it could be earlier. Councillors can run for parliament at the same time as holding their role in local politics, although there is debate about how effective they can be at their original job.

Southwark has a problem with bike theft.

Between March 2021 to April 2022, thieves stole 1,918 bicycles, a figure only topped by Tower Hamlets, which saw 2,072 bike thefts.

The north of the borough tends to be the hotspot. There were 317 bike thefts in the ward of London Bridge and West Bermondsey, the joint highest in London with Hammersmith Broadway in west London.

Tory Minister implies that Harriet Harman can’t lead ‘Partygate’ inquiry fairly

Helen Hayes, Labour MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, had secured her bike with a D Lock near the Peachy Goat restaurant on Half Moon Lane, Herne Hill.

Fortunately, staff from the vegan restaurant managed to deter the perpetrator, who was caught sawing through the lock on camera

by Dulwich Village Labour Councillor Margy Newens.

Having safely recovered her bike minus a broken lock, but still reeling from the attempted theft in her own parliamentary backyard, Hayes tweeted: “This is someone trying to steal my bike with a power tool in Herne Hill yesterday evening.

“Grateful to @margynewens for the photo and to staff at Peachy Goat who twice deterred him from finishing the task.

“Bike owners please be vigilant. Please do get in touch if you have any info.”

A manager at Peachy Goat said staff went outside to “give a bit of presence” which was enough to repel the thief.

With the lock broken, staff reportedly tried to see if they could move the bike inside but the manager said they couldn’t free it from the rack.

Harriet Harman has taken the role after Labour MP Chris Bryant said he couldn’t conduct the probe “without any imputation of unfairness” following his public criticism of Boris Johnson.

On the Privileges Committee, Harman will be joined by four Tory MPs, a fellow Labour MP and one from the SNP, reflecting the balance of parties in the House of Commons.

On Tuesday, June 14, the Prime Minister’s ex-ethics adviser Lord Geidt said it was “reasonable” to suggest the prime minister may have breached the ministerial code. He resigned from his role the following day.

Steve - the Southwark Park opera singer?

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Visitors to Southwark Park in recent months may have been surprised to hear the dulcet tones of a man singing opera, jazz and musical theatre numbers.

Steve Howgego started singing on the bandstand in March and tends to sing five days a week between 12pm and 2pm. “Without a microphone, that can get pretty tiring,” he joked.

Rotherhithe resident Steve told the News he sings “to cheer people up”, adding that “every time I come to the park I get someone saying how much they like my singing. I think partly because I live locally it’s caught on with the locals.”

Before he came to Southwark Park he was singing on the South Bank near Blackfriars Bridge from 2020, but “had a problem with quite aggressive beggars.”

“It can be quite stressful singing there,” he said. “Some of them are quite nice, but some of them are very aggressive. Here,

it’s mostly been great.”

The one problem Steve has had in three months is with some “troublesome” children aged about eleven or twelve.

“Luckily my friend from the gym that’s a big guy just happened to be passing by and spoke to them,” he said. “But that was only once, and actually the sixteen, seventeen-year-olds are very complimentary.”

Steve’s own life has had its ups and downs. Originally from the northeast, with Nigerian, Jewish, English and Scottish heritage, he became an investment banker and moved to Paris in the 1980s.

In the 1990s, he began training and singing with the London Community Gospel Choir, and toured all over the UK. He then left to go solo and took up a teaching job at Goldsmiths College in New Cross.

But Steve suffered “a complete breakdown” in 2001 and lost his job. “It’s just one of those things that happens to people,” he said.

Singing helped him to get better. “As I began to recover, I started to perform in public places. One of the first places

I went was St Thomas’ hospital where I was being treated.

“What really helped me pull my life together is performing.”

Steve said he is an entirely solo act, without an agent or contacts in the entertainment industry, and would love to get some more singing work. He has applied for Britain’s Got Talent but not had any success. “They must get so many people sending in applications, I’m not surprised I didn’t get anywhere.”

Steve has done one concert for local charity Time and Talents, but said he would “love to do some more work and build up [his] career.

“I would love to find work with anyone in Southwark that wants a singer,” he added. “An awful lot of people enjoy hearing me sing...

“But mostly what keeps me going is the reaction every day of people being really complimentary. I have been very well appreciated. And I’m doing it to make people happy, so I’m achieving the main goal.”

bring dead spaces back into use The future of the Southwark Park boat house and former cafe, plus the Surrey Docks adventure playground, are all uncertain

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey and Rotherhithe residents have called for three publicly-owned sites in the area to be brought back into use, with the buildings standing empty for years.

The Boat House and the former café building in Southwark Park, and Surrey Docks adventure playground in Rotherhithe are among more than twenty sites in Southwark identified

by London Green Party politician Sian Berry as “dead spaces” following a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

The Boat House by the lake in Southwark Park has been out of use since 2017, according to the FOI. The building used to be used for boat storage before this service ended. For a long time it was covered in bird excrement and the roof

was vandalised, before the council cleaned it up and fixed the roof. But it still remains unused.

“In effect it has become a place for birds to gather,” said Patrick Kingwell of the Southwark Park Association

1869, a community group that aims to protect and promote the park.

“We did suggest the fencing could be realigned closer to the lake edge and the boat house itself converted into an outdoor shelter from which

people could sit and view the lake and The Oval [the park’s cricket pitch, also in need of a makeover].

The former café building, which closed in January 2020, was replaced by the new cafe but has sat empty for

two and a half years. Mr Kingwell said that his group had suggested that the building could be used as a base for school and community groups when exploring the park.

But it is worth pointing out that the park does now boast a large cafe with stunning views of the lake and an new gallery space nearby.

According to the FOI, the future of the building is under review. Mr Kingwell said that the council was considering knocking it down for safety reasons.

Southwark held a consultation in 2020 on the future of Southwark Park, where the group made their suggestions for the buildings to be brought into “positive community use”. Mr Kingwell said they have not heard back from the council on their suggestions.

Meanwhile the Surrey Docks adventure playground, which closed in August 2021, has no reopening date set yet, ten months on. The council say on their website that the Trident Street facility “will remain closed for the time being, as this site requires significant investment to improve the play offer which we are working on.”

The playground is one of five adventure playgrounds in Southwark, two of which are closed. The other site not operating is Frederick’s adventure playground in Walworth, which is shuttered until 2023 after asbestos was discovered.

Asked what the plans were for the Surrey Docks playground and the two Southwark Park buildings, Southwark Council did not comment.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A bombshell council briefing paper has revealed that sixteen Southwark primary schools are in financial crisis, and 37 could be by 2023.

After a month of inquiries, the News can reveal that sixteen schools are in a budget deficit and require “urgent action” from central government.

Southwark Council is urging the Department for Education to deliver an additional £1.2 million cash injection, and to rethink its funding formula, or risk plunging half of the borough’s primary schools into budgetary overspend by the 2023 to 2024 academic year.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A new ‘Health Hub’ proposed by building developers Lendlease for Elephant Park, could mean closure for existing general practice (GP) surgeries on Princess Street in Eelphant and Manor Place in walworth.

As part of the Section 106 agreements signed by Lendlease and the council, the developer must pay a ‘Health Contribution’.

This could include the provision of a new health facility, but planning documents and previous Lendlease statements indicate that a new Health Hub could replace existing surgeries.

Both Manor Place and the Princess Street surgery are run by Nexus Health Group, who are in turn commissioned by the South East London Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

In a letter from Lendlease to Southwark Council, the property developer said the Health Hub would “serve the population at Elephant & Castle and the existing people currently served by the Princess Street and Manor Place GP Surgeries”.

Furthermore, Southwark Law Centre, a legal advice provider, received a

birth rates for the perilous state of affairs.

Affected schools have numerous ways of balancing the books such as reducing their Pupil Admission Number (PAN), merging with other schools, or restructuring. If these measures fail, closure is a last resort.

In a letter to Nadhim Zahawi, the Secretary of State for Education, Cabinet Member for Schools Councillor Jasmine Ali wrote: “I must now ask for your support by bringing to your attention the troubling issue of falling pupil rolls in London schools.

“This is a pan-London issue, with dire consequences for inner-city areas like my borough, Southwark.

“Here we are seeing a £3m deficit, with 17 schools in deficit, projected to rise to 37 in the coming years.

“This summer I was forced to close a primary school. My counterparts in London are in the same position. If we Lendlease statement via a planning officer saying: “The Health Hub will have general practice at their core (Princess Street GP Surgery and Manor Place Surgery), and the CCG is seeing them as an opportunity to review existing practice premises nearby…”

Although the proposed Health Hub hasn’t yet received planning permission, there are fears there has been a lack of consultation with local residents and patients so far Harpreet Aujla, a solicitor at Southwark Law Centre, said: “We are concerned about the lack of important information about how the proposed health hub will operate, and what it will replace in Walworth.

“There are also details in the memorandum between Lendlease, South East London Clinical Commissioning Group and Southwark Council that there will be a lease for 30 years, which is of course not that long.

“These details have not been included as part of the consultation, which is a huge omission. We are also aware that CCGs do have a duty to consult on the development and consideration of proposal which would have an impact on the manner in which the services are delivered to individuals or the range of health services available to them. Why is this not being done here?”

The number of schools in deficit is now 16 rather than 17, after one school climbed its way out of crisis.

Under the current system, schools receive central government funding on a ‘per pupil’ basis. This spells trouble for Southwark’s schools which has seen falling admissions since 2018.

The council is asking the government to provide extra cash to cover falling rolls and to change the ‘per pupil’ funding formula.

The government has already provided £1.8 million in funding but the council says the deficit stands at £3 million, leaving a £1.2 million shortfall.

Responding two months later, Nadhim Zahawi wrote back to Cllr Ali arguing that “88% of local authority maintained schools are in a cumulative surplus or breaking even”.

He added the department was already providing additional investment of £2.6 billion in 2020-21, £4.8 billion in 2021-22 and £7.1 billion in 2022-23 compared to 2019 - 2020.

While Zahawi cites that 88% of local authority maintained schools are at least breaking even, this appears to be

a national figure that fails to account for the problems facing a central London borough.

Southwark’s high immigrant population may have made it particularly susceptible to a post-Brexit exodus and many families chose to leave London during the pandemic.

Moreover, Southwark’s high levels of deprivation and expensive housing could be making families leave the borough, especially as the cost-of-living crisis tightens its grip.

The redevelopments of the Aylesbury Estate and Heygate Estate have seen scores of young families leave Southwark.

St John’s Walworth Primary School, which served many of the estate’s children, closed in 2021. Nearby English Martyrs Roman Catholic Primary School was saved by the skin of its teeth that same year.

The council has refused to say which individual schools are in trouble because it fears that parents might withdraw their children from affected schools, compounding the problem.

The council has said, if parents are concerned about a school’s financial situation, they should inquire with

schools on an individual basis.

Councillor Jasmine Ali, deputy leader and cabinet member for children, young people and schools, said: “We know that for most families, the choice on where to send their children to school is a decision from the heart, with careful consideration for what their child wants and needs. Parents put their trust in the school, and it becomes an extension of their family. That is why our focus is with the children in our schools, their parents and the teaching staff, and we too have their best interests in our hearts.

“The fact is, across London and other parts of the UK, and for many complex reasons, there are not enough children to fill London schools. This is causing a funding gap in schools. I know this will worry families when they hear that it is happening, but we are working with each school affected, individually, to find a solution.

“We offer families and school staff our unwavering support; practical help and assurance that we want schools to continue to offer the exceptionally high standard of education young people already receive in Southwark.”

Kye celebrates BMX National Series triumph with his young Peckham fans

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Kye Whyte cruised to a first place finish on his return to the Burgess Park BMX track, on a day when Peckham riders swept up a hoard of medals.

The Peckham-born silver-medal winning Olympian, a Peckham BMX Club legend, ranked 3rd in the world, was so relaxed he “laughed his way around the track”.

It was a day of triumph for Peckham, with their homegrown talents Lukah McKenzie and Shani Harris-Sherwood securing first and third place in their respective categories.

BMX Club said: “The weekend was great, just unbelievable, we had such an amazing time.

“Kye was literally laughing all the way round the track. He’s a different class altogether.”

After judging a dance category that saw a jubilant 4-year-old win a brand new bike, Kye whizzed off to Birmingham to cut the ribbon at The National Cycling Show in Birmingham.

The 22-year-old’s next challenge is the BMX World Championship in Paris from July 26 to 31, where Kye hopes to seal the world title.

Council Leader Kieron Williams attended in the morning and gave a speech where he expressed his pride at seeing Burgess Park host a national

competition.

He also spoke about the continuing investment the track can expect, including the £2 million skate bowl.

On Sunday, July 3, the track will host the BMX round of the London Youth Games. Spectators can attend for free and watch young people from London’s 33 boroughs battle it out for the top spot.

As well as cycling, there was delicious food and freebies on offer. Michael said: “The jerk chicken was amazing, we had the kebab man, the ice cream man, the sweet lady, and loads of things being given away to the kids.

“The National Series Round 7 and 8 at Burgess Park, Peckham was a success!”

Yet another stabbing on Walworth’s Brandon Estate

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A 40-year-old man was stabbed on the Brandon Estate last week, the second knife attack on the troubled Walworth estate in just two weeks.

Police were called at 10.45am to Andrews Walk to reports of a stabbing during a fight between a group of men on Friday 17 June.

Police rushed to the scene but everyone involved left the area before officers arrived. They couldn’t find the victim but did find “evidence of an injury” and established a crime scene.

A man then arrived at a south London hospital with a stab wound.

Police have since made an arrest.

Less than two weeks ago, on Saturday, June 4, an 18-year-old was

stabbed in the arm and shoulder on Hillingdon Street, which is just metres away from Andrews Walk.

Two months ago, on Friday, April 22, a 37-year-old was stabbed, once again, on Hillingdon Street.

Then on Monday, June 13, a fifteenyear-old was wounded on nearby East Street, an incident that led to the arrest of a teenage male on suspicion of GBH. That had been the second stabbing on East Street in just two weeks. On Tuesday, May 31 at 8.30pm, a teenager was left in a life threatening condition after being stabbed on the same street.

Police are asking those with information on the incident to contact them by calling 101 quoting CAD 2337/17JUN, Tweet @MetCC or calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

bermondsey Paedophile sentenced to 27 years Pearce is guilty of abusing six young girls

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A paedophile from Bermondsey has been given 27 years in prison after raping children over nearly two decades.

Robert Pearce, 54, was handed the jail sentence on Monday, June 20, with another eight years on extended licence, after abusing six victims between the ages of seven and sixteen, over an eighteen-year period from 1999 and

2017.

Pearce had been found guilty of 23 offences, including five charges of rape and twelve of indecent assault, in April.

PC Helen French, who led the investigation, said: “Pearce took complete advantage of these young girls and his actions have undoubtedly had a significant impact on all of their lives.

Finally Surrey Quays shopping centre makes it easier to report wrong fines

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The company that runs Surrey Quays shopping centre has apologised and said anyone who has been fined wrongly can get the ticket cancelled there and then.

The News has reported on several occasions when people appear to have been fined because the system

thought they had spent hours in the car park, when actually they had been there for two short visits in a 24-hour period. The problem seems to have been even more widespread and has gone on for years, if comments made online are to be believed.

Now British Land, which owns Surrey Quays shopping centre, has said anyone who thinks they have been wrongly fined should report the problem direct to the management office in the centre,

rather than through a lengthy appeal to CP Plus/Nexus, the company that runs the car park for them.

A spokesperson for the shopping centre said: “We are really sorry for any issues our customers have had.

We have now changed our process, should someone be awarded a fine in error.

“Anyone who wrongly receives a fine can report this to us at the Shopping Centre Management Office removing the need to go through the CP Plus appeal process.

If it is clear that a mistake was made, we will cancel the ticket there and then.”

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk People were stunned at the “extraordinary” sight of a burst water pipe turning roads into rivers on last Friday morning, June 17, on Union Street in Borough.

The Liberal Democrat councillor for Borough and Bankside, David Watson, was heading to the council offices for a stakeholder meeting when he stumbled across it at around 10.30am.

The recently elected councillor said: “It was extraordinary. By the time I was leaving the area a small river had formed up Redcross Way. “Fortunately, there was a council officer on the scene who was there by chance and she was on the phone to

Thames Water.”

Watson said he felt Thames Water could have responded quicker given “that’s the sort of emergency that needs to be dealt with immediately”.

The burst had been repaired by 12.30pm and Thames Water has said there were no reports of any flood damage to basements.

Some Twitter users reported their water supply had stopped and Thames Water confirmed that some people “may have had a very short interruption to their water supply”.

A spokesperson for Thames Water said: “We were onsite by midday and the leak was repaired by 1230.

Some customers may have had a very short interruption to their water supply, and we are sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

His colleagues in the Rotherhithe safer neighbourhood team described him as “always humble and very

chatty”.

The festival will feature music from acts like Greg Kofi-Brown, Phil Ramocon and Ramshackle, and Dr Elias and the Soul Surgeons.

Organiser Barry Duckett and the Right to Food organisation he is part of will also have a stall giving away fruit and vegetables. “We don’t want to see no one go hungry,” Barry said.

People aged over 75, or older care home residents, or with suppressed immune systems have been eligible for a fourth dose of the vaccine for two months already - but with summer here, and with it more socialising for many, the NHS is putting out a fresh reminder.

Dr Chris Streather, the medical director for the NHS in London, said: “The beginning of summer is just around the corner and we know this tends to be a period of increased social engagement, so it is indeed a good time to remind those Londoners who are most susceptible

to Covid-19 to ensure they get their spring booster to stay protected.”

Some communities, like people of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin, have had lower take-up of the vaccine. The vice-president of the British Islamic Medical Association urged eligible people to get the jab.

Dr Salman Waqar said: “As we continue to learn to live with COVID, it’s equally important that we retain good practices, taking all reasonable steps to protect our health so we can carry on with our lives, doing what we love.

“For the most vulnerable among us including older people and those with a weakened immune system, this means they may need extra protection from the COVID-19 Spring booster vaccine. I am also acutely aware uptake of the vaccine is lower in some communities including people of Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage so I strongly advise people to get vaccinated against COVID – whether they need a first, second or booster dose.”

Recent research from the UK Health Security Agency showed that the NHS booster programme has helped prevent around 186,000 hospitalisations since midDecember.

Peckham church spent £180,000 on business class flights It’s only one part of a raft of financial mismanagement found by Charity Commission

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham church that says its aim is to promote Christianity and relieve poverty had spent more than £181,000 on business class flights over five and a half years, according to an investigation that found a wide range of “mismanagement” and “misconduct”.

The Everlasting Arms Ministries, at the corner of the Old Kent Road and Peckham Park Road, was investigated by the Charity Commission after it sold its church building to a developer in 2016 for £8 million.

Among the many findings from the commission’s years-long investigation,

which ended this week, were that: The church spent more than £457,000 from April 2015-March 2018 on “international outreach”, with money spent on luxuries like five star hotels and business-class flights The church spent more than £181,000 on business class flights between April 2015 and October 2020, because flights “can be cumbersome” Expenditure rose to nearly £900,000 in the financial year ending April 2018, while income sank to about £327,000 The ‘senior pastor’ got nearly £216,000 from the church for private and charity spending over the four years to March 2020 The senior pastor and the deputy senior pastor - his wife - got large pay rises without proper documentation

Some £2 million of the £8 million the church got from selling off its building was not included in its accounts A company of which the deputy senior pastor is a director got more than £27,000 from the church over three years The charity commission’s investigation found that “the charity was spending significant sums without proper oversight and checks and no clear long-term strategy” which “put the charity’s funds at risk”.

The church, which describes itself as “an inter-denominational Christian ministry devoted to deliverance, holiness, preaching of the word and setting the captive free”, only sold its building because it ‘could not keep up with mortgage payments’. Investigators said that this “points to a long-standing lack of sound

financial management within the charity which is further highlighted by the way in which the funds of the sale proceeds were spent.”

That included payments of at least £140,000 to a now-dormant company whose majority shareholder is the church’s head of finance. The payments were for security after several burglaries on the church - but to support the payment the church could only show an unsigned contract and incorrectly filled out cheque requisition forms.

As a result of the investigation, the previous trustees - including the senior pastor - who were responsible for this huge outlay stepped down and were replaced by a new group. The commission also froze the church’s assets in February 2020, before unfreezing them two years

later.

Investigators said: “The previous trustee board is responsible for serious management and/or misconduct in the administration of the charity. How they governed and managed the charity prior to the Commission’s intervention falls well below the standard that the Commission expects.”

But the new board has made “significant efforts” to improve the way the charity is run, investigators said. “Because of the inquiry, the current trustees are more aware of their trustee duties, the importance of proper record keeping and decision making, and have taken measures to reduce expenditure.”

The Everlasting Arms Ministry did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Dr Rosie Benneyworth, CQC’s head of inspection for primary medical services in London, said: “I am placing this service in special measures. Services placed in special measures will be inspected again within six months.

“If insufficient improvements have been made such that there remains a rating of inadequate for any population group, key question or overall, we will take action in line with our enforcement procedures to begin the process of preventing the

provider from operating the service. This will lead to cancelling their registration or to varying the terms of their registration within six months if they do not improve.

“The service will be kept under review and if needed could be escalated to urgent enforcement action. Where necessary,

another inspection will be conducted within a further six months, and if there is not enough improvement, we will move to close the service by adopting our proposal to remove this location or cancel the provider’s registration.

“Special measures will give people who

use the service the reassurance that the care they get should improve.”

The surgery, which has about 8,860 patients, has been rated inadequate since 2019. Concerns were first highlighted in 2018. The surgery has been contacted for comment on the latest inspection.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham GP’s surgery has been placed in special measures after being rated “inadequate” in several areas, including keeping expired vaccines in the same fridge as indate doses.

The Acorn and Gaumont House surgery on Peckham High Street will face another inspection again in September, six months after the last visit from regulators. If staff have not made drastic improvements by then, the company operating the surgery could lose its registration.

Failings found by regulators the Care Quality Commission (CQC) included: Measles, mumps and rubella vaccines kept two months past their sell-by date in the same fridges as usable doses - putting patients at risk Records not kept up-to-date properly, meaning patients could be “at risk of not

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk There have been more homicides in Southwark than anywhere else in London over the past five years, according to police data.

Some 41 homicides were recorded in Southwark between June 2017 and May 2022, above Newham in east London with 40, Greenwich with 38, Lambeth with 34 and Croydon with 33.

In English law, homicide includes murder and manslaughter. The most recent homicides were in April 2022, when four family members were killed at home on a Bermondsey estate. Joshua Jacques was charged with the murder of Dolet Hill, Denton Burke, Tanysha Ofori-Akuffo and Samantha Drummonds on the Bonamy Estate.

Other than that, the homicide rate has rarely risen above one or two per month in Southwark over the past five years, although these numbers do not convey the horror and grief each homicide leaves behind. Here we look back at some of the tragic killings that have shocked the people of our borough.

Abdirahman Mohamed, 2017

Camberwell boy Abdirahman Mohamed, 17, was found with a stab wound to the chest on June 2, 2017 on Southampton Way in Peckham. He died within minutes.

Sidique Kamara, 21, was tried for his murder but found not guilty.

Two years and two months later, Kamara himself, a member of Walworth drill group and alleged gang Moscow17, was stabbed to death on Warham Street in Camberwell.

Kenneth Umezie, 32 and from Camberwell, was found not guilty of Kamara’s murder and manslaughter at the Old Bailey, although he admitted that a knife he was carrying could have dealt the fatal blow.

Rhyhiem Barton, 2018

Rhyhiem Barton was shot on the corner of Camberwell New Road and John Ruskin Street in Kennington on May 5, 2018 while out with friends.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of murdering the seventeen-year-old aspiring rapper from the Brandon Estate in June 2018 – but no one has been charged more than four years on from the killing, despite a £20,000 police reward.

He had already survived a near-miss stabbing attack and had been sent to Jamaica, where his family originally came from, in an attempt to keep him safe. But he came back to London after ten months to pursue his musical goals.

A BBC documentary, Murder on the Streets, asked what more could have been done to help Rhyhiem, who had attended five schools by the age of fifteen.

His mentor Sayce Holmes-Lewis said: ““When a school or organisation decides to exclude permanently an eight-year-old young, black male, you are setting him up to fail.

McCaulay Junior Edwards, 2019

McCaulay Junior Urugbezi-Edwards, 18, was “remorselessly” chased through an Elephant and Castle estate and stabbed to death on May 5, 2019.

McCaulay met Rashai Annang, from Lewisham at the Tube station that day by chance. They had a brief conversation before McCaulay ran away, pursued by Annang on a bike from Gaol Park into Tiverton Street, near the Rockingham Estate.

Annang found McCaulay on the ground, kicked him and stabbed him forcefully several times. Annang fled the scene and McCaulay died a few hours later.

Police found Annang in a Norwich hotel.

He was found guilty of McCaulay’s murder in September 2020, and showed “no remorse” for his actions. He was sentenced to sixteen years and 265 days in prison.

Santiago Lenin Borja Denoso, 2020

Santiago Lenin Borja Denoso, 45, died after hitting his head when he was pushed to the ground outside a restaurant on the Old Kent Road on February 23, 2020.

Killer: Jose Adolfo Licona Valladares He died more than a month later, on March 31, 2020. Jose Adolfo Licona Valladares, 25, of Brixton Hill, was jailed in October for three years after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Beatrice Cenusa, 2021

Beatrice Cenusa, 26, was stabbed to death by her ex-husband Stony Stoica, 44, in a “vicious” attack at her flat on Lordship Lane in East Dulwich on July 23, 2021.

Stoica attacked his wife just a few feet away from their nine-year-old daughter.

Ms Cenusa was found with the knife still embedded in her chest. She was rushed to hospital but died a few hours later.

Stoica turned himself in at a Peckham police station a few hours later and admitted he had just killed his ex-wife. He was jailed for life in February this year, and will serve a minimum of eighteen years in prison.

Former Met officer fined for ‘sex act’ in Dulwich park

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A former police community support officer has been fined for performing a “repulsive” sex act in an East Dulwich park - while wearing his uniform.

Former PCSO Kevin Phillips, 56, was filmed on a bench in Dog Kennel Hill open space performing the act while on duty. The video was watched tens of thousands of times on the internet.

Police did not specify what the act was, but the BBC has reported it as a solo sex act and said previously, Croydon Magistrates’ Court heard that Phillips blamed his behaviour on stress and a medical condition.

Phillips, who was with the roads and transport policing unit of the Met and has since resigned, was found guilty of outraging public decency and fined £500.

Chief Superintendent Simon Ovens, who leads the Met’s roads and transport policing command, said that Phillips’

behaviour was “repulsive” adding that the act was “contrary to everything the decent officers and staff of the Metropolitan Police stand for.

“He has let down a great many of his colleagues and the public whom we serve. There is absolutely no place in the Met for such appalling behaviour.

Officers first became aware of the video on March 30 and Phillips was arrested and charged the next day. He pleaded guilty at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on April 1. He was bailed to appear on June

An independent police investigation found that he would have been fired if he had not already resigned.

Chief Superintendent Ovens added: “As soon as we became aware of the video we took immediate action to investigate.

Officers worked through the night to identify him and secure a warrant for

his arrest. The investigation, led by our new Domestic Abuse and Sexual Offences professionalism team, resulted in Phillips’ arrest, charge and guilty plea within 48 hours. I trust such swift action will assure the public how seriously we take breaches of trust and confidence and how robustly we will work to root out those who undermine the service.”

£18 million boost for Southwark businesses

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Local businesses that missed out on government support grants during the Covid-19 pandemic will receive £18.5 million in businesses rates discounts.

The government announced the COVID-19 Additional Relief Fund (CARF), worth £1.5 billion, in March 2021 but

didn’t give local councils guidance on how to distribute it until December.

Following the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, June 14, the council will receive £18,562,689 from central government to help businesses that didn’t receive government support during the pandemic.

Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Finance, Democracy and Digital, said: “We know that during the Covid-19

pandemic businesses were hit really hard and whilst there were some grant payments made to businesses through the ‘Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Fund’, and also through our own discretionary fund, there are still many businesses that fell through the net.”

While she said the fund would provide important support to businesses, she said it was “awful and shocking” that it took the government nine months to tell

councils how to allocate CARF payments.

Businesses eligible for the grant must not have received relief in 2021 through the Extended Retail Discount or the Nursery Discount.

They must also occupy a property with a rateable value of less than £51,000 and have occupied it from April 1 2021 to March 31 2022.

Betting shops and financial service businesses such as payday lenders,

banks and cash points are excluded from the grant.

The money will be paid directly to businesses as one-off relief payments that go towards their business rates bills for 2021 to 2022.

The council have also said, if money is left over when grants have been distributed, the remaining budget could be used to help businesses with rateable values of up to £100,000.

Elephant and Castle shopping centre, and then in Cambridge House in Camberwell.

“What has not changed however is the need for support to the local community and voluntary sector,” he said.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Peckham’s iconic arch could still be removed, with the council saying they “will continue to look at the future of the arch.

In October 2021 Spheron, the architectural firm tasked with the square’s redevelopment, released a concept design that reimagined the square without the arch.

The firm invited the public to comment on the plans but there have been few updates since, leading some to believe the plans had been dropped altogether.

But the council has told the News a redesign will go ahead and that they “will continue to look at… the future of the arch”.

Local architect Benedict O’Looney, who is leading Peckham Rye Station’s Victorian restoration, said he would oppose any plans to remove what he described as “the portico of Peckham”.

He believes the arch is a “democratic

meeting space” akin to the ancient Agora of Athens and “shouldn’t be disposed of lightly”.

The Agora is an ancient Greek structure dating back to the 6th century BC and is considered the birthplace of Athenian democracy.

We know this has taken longer than we hoped to complete and we have had to deal with a number of setbacks, but the council remains committed to the Peckham Square project and we continue to work with residents and businesses as we bring phases forward.”

In 2016, Southwark Council hired Carl Turner architects who proposed removing the arch and building flats on the square. The plans were dropped after vocal local opposition.

But five years later, in a June 2021

online notice, the council wrote “many residents have said they would like to see the arch removed”.

The notice said the arch takes up room that could be used for “commercial and/ or community space”, cuts off access from the high street and its removal could make the area “feel safer, more inviting, encouraging better use of the square at all times of day”.

But Benedict O’Looney spoke glowingly of the arch. “Urbanisticaly, it dates back to structures like the Agora in Athens where people young and old could gather and exchange ideas. It’s precious and shouldn’t be disposed of lightly”, he said.

He continued: “In view of the density of people living around Peckham Square it provides a wonderful indoor-outdoor space, a careful social mixing ground.

“It’s in the tradition of a covered market space that goes back hundreds of years in Britain. There are similar covered market spaces dating back to Tudor times in Faversham, Ledbury and Worcestershire. It’s quite a rare structure and I don’t think people get that.”

“Nobody is against additional social housing. This is a nice place to live and we’d like to have new social housing but not to the detriment of people living here.”

Similar fears have been echoed on the nearby Southampton Way Estate, Peckham, where 32 rooftop homes could be built.

They also worry that rooftop homes are unsafe, and say that despite residents’ opposition, the council is “forcing on with their project.”

The council has been approached for comment and asked to clarify whether basic flat improvements are dependent on rooftop homes being approved.

Nunhead Estate raises anti-rooftop homes banner as they await the council’s latest update Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Residents on the Nunhead Estate have raised a banner in opposition to a proposed rooftop and infill project on the estate.

The development would see 45 new social rented homes built on the estate but residents say the project would be disruptive, “stressful” and unsafe.

Worries about the project’s safety arise from an ARUP report that said rooftop builds on pre-1970s blocks could cause disproportionate collapse.

The council has previously said that the ARUP report makes “blanket comments” and any potential site would be judged on a “case by case” basis.

Tenants and leaseholders also argue that the proposed infill would take away

important green space, the importance of which was highlighted during the pandemic.

Since a February protest against the proposals, 92 out of 137 households have signed letters sent to the council expressing opposition to the plans, according to the tenants and residents.

But a month after that May deadline, tenants and leaseholders are still anxiously waiting for news from the council.

“We’re still waiting,” said one resident. “This whole process has been hugely stressful for residents and the communication has been poor throughout. First, the idea was sprung on us in July 2020, at the height of the pandemic and now we’re being left in limbo.”

They also received a letter from the council saying “when building these

new homes, we will improve the existing flats sitting underneath the new flats”.

Residents fear this means basic improvements to kitchens and bathrooms are dependent on them agreeing to the council’s proposals.

According to a council newsletter, Tiling House, Glover House, Lancefield House, Creed House and Goodwin House have all been identified as potential recipients of rooftop extensions.

One resident said: “We ask: What real tangible evidence did the council seek from developers that rooftop building on pre-70s council blocks was, in reality, safe, and likely to cause minimal disruption before they tried to roll it out to nearly a dozen estates?”

Estate resident Rafik Guendouze, 45, an electrical engineer and fatherof-three said: “We feel like they’re completely ignoring these concerns.

Royal approval for Maria

Cllr Maria Linforth-Hall runs a charity, Su Mano Amiga, which helps domestic violence victims, especially in the Latin American community around Elephant and Castle. In lockdown she was seeing as many as 26 victims a day.

She told the News: “I would be speaking on the telephone, and I could see the other calls coming in. So it was one call after another and after another.

“It was very difficult for the parents obviously but it is also difficult for children, living in one-bed flats, or bedsits. They were in the middle of fights between parents, if they couldn’t go out it was even worse.”

“I was very concerned for the mental health of children, and you become concerned that would become perpetrators later.” As well as her work with women, she has also helped the children in these families through dedicated activity sessions, first inperson and then over Zoom during the pandemic.

Part of Cllr Linforth-Hall’s work with her charity, which she founded in 2016,

is dance therapy with Siobhan Davies studios on St George’s Road near Elephant and Castle. “The sessions are for the people that have suffered, to get a time of expansion, to be able to enjoy dance and movements and productivity.”

Cllr Linforth Hall is a Liberal Democrat who represents St George’s ward in the north of the borough, in the area where her charity works.

“Being a councillor is fantastic because I am able to have more inside knowledge of how I can help them with housing. You get to know the officers.

“At one stage before lockdown, I was going to the council housing office in Peckham every month, then twice a month, then every week, then three days a week. I was helping people who are homeless, helping them to do translation.”

The offices officially close at 4pm but Cllr Linforth-Hall said she would often stay helping people until 10pm.

Asked why the Latin American community needs a dedicated domestic violence victim support charity, Cllr Linforth-Hall, who is originally from Ecuador, said: “It’s a cultural thing, the machismo that exists [among some Latin American people]. The husband is the one who commands, not just physical things but also psychological.”

She added that some women from Latin American communities might find it harder to speak up about the abuse they are facing, and having someone who speaks their first language can make it easier to ask for help.

Cllr Linforth-Hall was one of 490 people across the UK given the Platinum Champion award as part of the jubilee celebrations.

The awards were given out by the Royal Voluntary Service, of which the Queen is the patron. Cllr Linforth-Hall was nominated by her constituents. A panel led by The Duchess of Cornwall picked the winners from more than 3,000 nominations.

As well as her work with domestic violence victims, Cllr Linforth-Hall also worked with local pharmacist Atul Patel to get Covid-19 vaccines to people who could not leave their home.

Cllr Linforth-Hall said: “Volunteering is an important part of being part of a community and I urge other Southwark residents to give what time they can to help neighbours in need. Of course I am proud to receive an award from such a prestigious organisation. But, most of all, I want to say my thanks to those constituents who nominated me in the first place. They are part of the reason I dedicate myself to charitable causes.”

The council decided to redevelop the Aylesbury Estate in 2005 after concluding that refurbishment would be too expensive.

To date, 408 homes have been

completed by developers L&Q in the Phase 1A and Site 7 developments.

However, a 2015 Greater London Authority case report shows that, in 2008, the Aylesbury had 2,758 homes, 2,402 of which were socially rented, meaning the new development delivers a net loss in social rent properties.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council could force eleven leaseholders on the Aylesbury Estate to sell up after obtaining new compulsory purchase order (CPO) powers.

The council is currently negotiating deals with the remaining leaseholders so they can vacate their properties on the Phase 2B site, ready for demolition.

They say the CPO, which would allow the council to buy their homes without their consent, is a “last resort” in case a purchase price can’t be agreed.

No councillor objected to adopting CPO powers, and the motion was unanimously agreed upon at the Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, June 14.

In a foreword, Councillor Darren Merrill, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, wrote: “This Cabinet report gives if required the authority for the council to use CPO powers to acquire the last of the leasehold properties on Phase 2B of the Aylesbury Estate.

“This will be done as a last resort to secure vacant possession so that the continuation of the delivery of 614 new homes can be achieved.

“The blocks on this site are in need of significant investment in order to provide the high quality of housing we would want for our residents.”

The council has already acquired 46 leasehold properties on the Aylesbury and successfully rehoused 293 households on secure tenancies.

A council officer at the meeting seemed to suggest that the option of a CPO had helped the council negotiate agreements with other leaseholders.

“We’ve now agreed prices with everyone in phase one… so that’s a really positive step and part of that is knowing we’ve got the authority to take that forward through a CPO process.

So the process does work”, the council officer said.

Design for Rotherhithe Tunnel refurbishment complete - but there’s no money to do the job ‘Devastated’ after £12k truck stolen

Joyce Iyinolakan, who runs the Souldeliciouz van selling Caribbean and Nigerian food with her husband Tunde, found that the new van had been stolen from an estate near Peckham Park Road on Tuesday morning, June 14.

The exact time it was stolen from outside the Unwin and Friary community hall is unclear, although people living near where it was parked said they last saw it on Saturday evening, June 11.

The van itself was worth about £12,000, and replacing the equipment would add further costs, Ms Iyinolakan said.

Souldeliciouz had a pitch at the Radiate Festival celebrating the Windrush and black British culture coming up on June 25 and 26 in Burgess Park, and then several other festivals and events later this summer. Joyce said they would be cooking from a gazebo at the festival as the food truck is still missing.

“Honestly, it is just devastating that someone could do this,” she said. “It is very disheartening.” Joyce added that she was surprised at the lengths the thieves went to in order to steal the van, given the multiple security measures she and her husband had put in.

They reported the van stolen to the police, but said they were told that there was not enough resources to go through the CCTV footage. Joyce and Tunde are asking anyone with any information to get in touch with them here so they can pass onto the Met.

Two drug busts yield only one small bag of cannabis

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A raid on last Thursday, June 16, in south Bermondsey at a house police suspected was being used for drug dealing yielded only a small amount of herbal cannabis.

The drug bust took place at about 8.20am on Stevenson Crescent, led by officers from the South Bermondsey safer neighbourhood team (SNT) and Rotherhithe SNT. Police had heard reports of drug dealing and drug use at the address.

The person with the cannabis was given a written warning by police.

A spokesperson for the local police said: “As part of a day of action, on 16th June

2022 at 0820 hours South Bermondsey SNT officers and Rotherhithe area SNT colleagues executed a Misuse of Drugs Act Search Warrant at an address on Stevenson Crescent SE16.

“This is in response to reports of suspected Drug dealing and Drug using at the address. During the search a small amount of Herbal Cannabis was found and the offender received a written warning for this. Occupants of the address were cooperative with police throughout the search.”

On the same day, police executing a drugs warrant on the Adam Gardens estate near Rotherhithe station found no drugs. Police said they were acting on information from the UK Border Agency.

TfL is also ready to find contractors to carry out the £120 million repair project, which would mean the tunnel would be closed for about a year.

The cash-strapped transport agency, which has a billion-pound hole in its budget largely because of fares lost in the Covid-19 pandemic, said that the tendering process is on hold until more money can be found for the project.

TfL boss Andy Byford said the agency was putting in a series of short-term fixes to keep the 114-year-old tunnel safe and useable until the main works can go ahead.

Putting off the works means the tunnel would cost more to maintain and run.

The likelihood of closures will also increase year-on-year, as the operating systems become less reliable and more difficult to repair.

It comes nearly a year after a senior TfL manager said last July that the tunnel was “in urgent need of an upgrade” and was the Thames crossing most in need of repair. “The Rotherhithe Tunnel was built many years ago for a different type of purpose,” Gareth Powell, managing director for surface transport, told the

London Assembly.

“That is one of the reasons why there are restrictions around the type of vehicle that can enter and go through that tunnel at the moment. That’s in order that we can continue to operate the tunnel safely.”

Only vehicles less than two metres high and wide and weighing below two tonnes are allowed to drive through the tunnel.

Since December 2019 drivers are not limited to one fine per day for breaking this rule. TfL says drivers whose vehicles don’t meet these standards should cross the river at Tower Bridge or the Blackwall Tunnel.

Drivers paid out some £5 million in fines for taking the wrong kinds of vehicles through the Rotherhithe Tunnel in the first eight months of 2021 alone.

‘Woman rescued from Bermondsey brothel’

The raid took place on Friday, June 10, with officers from South Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, North Bermondsey and Surrey Docks community policing teams all taking part.

Police did not say exactly where the

brothel was, but a photo posted to social media appeared to show the Rennie Estate.

The woman was referred to support services. Officers said they would be in contact with the owner of the property.

No arrests have been made.

A spokesperson for the south Bermondsey safer neighbourhood police team said: “On 10th June 2022 Officers from South Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, North Bermondsey

and Surrey Docks SNT’s attended an address on South Bermondsey Ward to conduct a welfare check/safeguarding enquiries on the occupants after receiving information that the address was a brothel.

“Officers were granted entry into the address where one female was found to be safe and well and has since been referred to support services. Enquiries remain ongoing and contact will be made with the owner of the address.”

Calls for Khan to answer questions over bus cuts Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Sadiq Khan is facing calls to answer public questions about the devastating cuts to bus routes in Southwark, with figures showing that bus usage is at three-quarters of normal levels.

Southwark Council’s overview and scrutiny committee, which monitors the performance of the council itself and other public bodies that have an effect on people in the borough, has sent a letter to London mayor Khan’s office asking him to come to a meeting next month.

If he or his deputy Seb Dance came, they would face councillors’ questions on the proposed cuts, which would see the 78, 12 and 45 axed, and several other local routes cut back.

A spokesperson for Khan said in response that the mayor was “furious” with the government for pressuring TfL into considering slashing the bus network to save money - but did not say whether he would come to any meetings.

Lib Dem leader Victor Chamberlain is also calling for Labour mayor Khan to double the length of the consultation period, so that it would last until the end of August rather than ending on July 12, in order to give more people time to respond.

A senior TfL executive said that about 9,000 people have taken part in the consultation in the two and a half weeks since it launched, adding that the agency’s experience with public

outreach told them that six weeks was enough time.

The Lib Dems also want Khan to host a public event where Londoners can pose the mayor questions on the bus cut proposals.

The News asked Southwark Labour, who also strongly oppose the bus cuts but have laid the blame at the government’s door instead, if they would back the Lib Dems’ demands on Khan. Labour did not reply.

Khan and Transport for London (TfL) are facing pressure from the government’s department for transport to cut costs in order to get more funding, after its finances were massively damaged by loss of fares in the pandemic.

TfL is unusual for a transport agency in a major city in that about half of its income comes from fares, rather than being subsidised centrally.

TfL say they want to make a four per cent in the kilometres its buses cover to help cut costs in line with government demands. That translates to sixteen routes possibly being scrapped entirely.

The Southwark routes at risk of being axed are: The 78, which runs from Nunhead and Peckham through Bermondsey, over Tower Bridge to Liverpool Street The 45, which runs from Streatham through Camberwell and Walworth to Elephant and Castle The 12, which runs 24 hours from Dulwich through Peckham, Camberwell, Walworth and Elephant and Castle into Westminster The 521, which runs from Waterloo to London Bridge, via Holborn and the City

of London Buses in London were loss-making and subsidised by other parts of TfL before the pandemic, to the tune of about £700 million in the 2019/2020 financial year.

TfL said even before Covid that its bus network was “unsustainable”.

Although part of the justification for the proposed cuts is falling demand for buses since the pandemic, TfL figures show that ridership was at 80 per cent of pre-Covid levels on June 13, the latest citywide figures available, and has been as high as 90 per cent on some days in recent weeks.

Meanwhile in Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham, the City and Tower Hamlets, the boroughs affected by the proposed cuts to the 78, 45, 12 and 521, early morning ridership was between 70 per cent and 80 per cent of pre-pandemic levels on the week from March 14-18 this year.

Cllr Chamberlain said that the cuts would have “a devastating and gutting effect on Southwark and south London.”

“They are especially harmful when we need to be going greener, faster alongside helping residents with the cost-of-living emergency. The Labour Mayor must finally show he cares about the south of the river by halting these bus cuts immediately. Bus numbers are almost back to where they were before the Covid pandemic.

“Our buses are vital to so many Southwark residents and Sadiq Khan’s cuts will hurt the poorest and most vulnerable first and hardest. This is not what a Labour Mayor should be doing.

Despite claiming to be green, our Labour

Mayor has failed time and time again to stand up for sustainable south London transport.”

Adding context to the proposed bus cuts, Cllr Chamberlain also pointed out that the Bakerloo line extension through Southwark down to Lewisham had been put off indefinitely, and criticised the controversial Silvertown Tunnel, backed

by Khan, which will let cars drive from Greenwich to Newham.

The Southwark Council meeting he wants Khan to attend is the July 6 Overview and Scrutiny committee.

The Overview and Scrutiny committee monitors the performance of the council itself and other public bodies that have an effect on people in the borough.

Southwark Labour has also called for the bus cuts to be avoided, although they have targeted the Conservative central government for criticism for not funding TfL properly, rather than Khan himself.

A spokesperson for Khan said: “The Mayor is furious on behalf of Londoners that TfL is having to consider changes to its bus network because of conditions attached by the Government to their emergency funding deals which were only needed as a consequence of the pandemic.

“These conditions included the need to make substantial savings and have led to the proposals for TfL to reduce service levels on London’s bus network. TfL is currently seeking views on it’s proposed changes, and this consultation will run for six week, giving Londoners time to feed back.

“The route changes being consulted on are intended to cause as little disruption

to passengers as possible, while still making the savings required by the Government. Passengers can also make use of the ‘Hopper’ fare introduced by the Mayor, meaning no extra costs will be incurred by passengers for changing buses unlimited times within an hour.”

Geoff Hobbs, TfL’s director of public transport service planning, said: “We previously conducted a large consultation on changes to buses in central London back in 2018 and found that six weeks was an adequate time to give people to respond. For this consultation we have seen more responses at the same stage.

“We have raised awareness through multiple channels with widespread coverage across national and regional media, and continue to engage proactively with stakeholders interested in the proposals. If we became aware of people being unable to meet the deadline we would look at the best way to take their views onboard.”

It comes after bus drivers, passengers and trade union Unite also slammed the proposed cuts, with concerns over possible job losses and threat of a strike.

Unite said the proposed cuts were “an attempt to make London’s bus workers pay the price for the pandemic”.

The trade union added that it was concerned over possible redundancies and loss of income from the proposed cuts. Arriva, which runs about 100 routes in London for TfL, previously said “no redundancies would be expected as a result of these proposed changes.”

Families affected by dementia bowled over by free offer

Dementia sufferers and their families are invited to watch Day One of the fixture between Surrey County Cricket Club and Kent County Cricket Club on Sunday, June 26.

Afzal Shaikh, 86, from Mole Valley in Surrey, is an avid cricket fan living with dementia and will be there with his wife Zohra and family.

Zohra said: “Afzal was a keen cricketer during university in Pakistan while studying medicine. He has been playing cricket here since 1963 and kept going until he turned 70.

“He helped form a cricket team with other medics and NHS staff when he was working at hospitals in Peterborough.

They called themselves the Grim Reapers.

“He sought a diagnosis because he was having problems remembering which patients he had seen each day at work. For instance, seeing patients in the morning and ringing them up in the afternoon.”

“My husband was later diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2014. We have a local cricket club behind our house and pre-Covid, we were both scorers for them, although his attention span wasn’t up to scoring the entire match so

Zohra and Afzal Shaikh he would sit there for long periods while I did it. The sport has been a lifeline passion of his.

“I cannot remember when my husband last went to a sports stadium, probably 30 years ago as going out is very difficult.

We are very excited to be at the match later this month.”

Chaos seemingly avoided on the first morning of rail and tube strikes

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A day that threatened to cause chaos on the roads appears to have started without too much trouble.

Tens of thousands of rail and Tube workers went on strike on Tuesday, June 21, over pay, and jobs and pension concerns respectively.

But many people appeared to have listened to warnings not to travel on Tuesday, with few large queues for buses in Peckham and Bermondsey between 8am and 9am.

Traffic was definitely busier on the Old Kent Road and other major routes in the north and centre of the borough on Tuesday morning, suggesting that more people were driving to work than usual. Camberwell New Road was very busy with traffic, with one bus user saying it had taken him an hour and a half to get to his job in Westminster.

Several Transport for London (TfL) bike stands were also empty or nearlyempty, indicating that people had chosen to cycle to work than on a normal day.

Two people waiting for the bus canvassed for comment on Jamaica Road in Bermondsey said they had been stressed thinking that there would be huge queues to get on, but had been surprised not to find them.

Tuesday was the first day of the rail strike, which is going ahead on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday this

week. The RMT said the rail strike was not about train drivers’ pay, but to support other rail workers, who are lower paid. Tube drivers are mostly represented by another union - ASLEF. The Tube strike is only on Tuesday.

Every Tube line was fully or partly suspended on Tuesday. Out of lines going through Southwark, the Jubilee and Bakerloo lines were closed entirely, while the Northern line was running only in the north London suburbs. The Overground routes going through south-east London were also closed.

News emerged on the eve of the strikes that national Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s office had told his shadow cabinet not to show support to the union members on picket lines.

Some Southwark Labour councillors gave vocal backing to the RMT strikes.

Sam Foster, a newly elected councillor in the Faraday ward in Walworth, was at the London Bridge Tube station picket line on Tuesday for an hour before work.

He told the News that he was showing “basic worker solidarity” in the face of “decades of rollback and anti-union legislation.”

“What they’re asking for doesn’t strike me as an unreasonable demand in any respect.” Cllr Foster added that Southwark Labour leader Cllr Kieron Williams had made “no suggestion” that his councillors should avoid picket lines, in contrast with Sir Keir.

Comment TfL have tough choices to make - but they shouldn’t make life tougher for those who can least afford it

T

he Government is not giving Transport for London (TfL) enough funds to run the transport system that London needs.

So TfL have worked out that they have to cut 4% from their budget for buses.

They’ve published proposals that they have put out for consultation and I will be strongly objecting to them on behalf of people of Camberwell and Peckham.

They plan to withdraw the 12, 45 and 78 routes and change the routes of the 59, 148, 171 and 388. It would mean fewer buses, longer waits at bus stops and needing to change more often.

25% of the London Bus cuts they are proposing fall in Southwark, just one London borough out of 32 served by TfL. And people here need the buses.

Most people don’t have cars or can’t afford the petrol to drive to work.

We don’t have a tube in Camberwell and Peckham for people to use as an alternative. And though many people here, especially young people, cycle, jumping on a bike is not possible for a mum with a couple of kids, a frail elderly person or a wheelchair user.

The cuts will mean people having to change buses or “more interchanges” as TfL put it. For an elderly person who can do one journey might not be able

For a disabled person, getting on a crowded bus might feel impossible.

TfL don’t want to make these cuts. They know we need more buses, not fewer.

But in view of the fact they feel forced to cut, they should make those cuts in a way which is least harmful to those who will be worst hit. I’ve spoken to TfL and I’m working with Southwark’s two other MPs Helen Hayes and Neil Coyle on this. I’ve said to TfL that they should completely redo their planned cuts. They should start with a map showing the

greatest concentrations of low income and make sure the cuts avoid those areas. TfL acknowledge in their “impact statement” that any cuts to buses hit hardest at the elderly, women and girls, those with disabilities and those on low incomes. So it makes no sense that they plan to hit Southwark so hard.

Bus cuts, struggling families and alleged gross misconduct in Met

t the time of writing, the Government is winding down the clock on coming to the table to provide a fair and long-term funding deal for Transport for London (TfL) by this Friday’s (24th June) deadline.

TfL and the Mayor have been warning for a long-time that without proper Government investment in our transport network coming out of the pandemic, we could see farreaching cuts to bus and tube services and the cancellation of key infrastructure projects.

A few weeks ago, TfL announced that it was consulting on scrapping the 12, 45, 78 and 521 bus routes, which are a lifeline for Southwark residents- especially elderly and disabled people in our community.

No one wants to see these damaging cuts. But let’s be clear, the Government could stop them by putting an end to the new era of austerity that it has imposed upon London’s transport network.

I am now urging local people to join me in calling on Ministers to act and to also contribute the TfL

STORY: Councils like Southwark could be hit with “unlimited” fines for failing to carry out proper repairs on their homes under a new law being put through parliament that is designed to improve the state of social housing across the UK. Where are the fines going to go? Are they going to go back to the tenants that had to put up with this? Earlier this month, the Government released its new Food Strategy which was a big disappointment. This was a missed opportunity to extend free school meals to all primary school pupils amidst a cost of living crisis. This is something that I have been calling for and that the Mayor has also recently come out to endorse.

Too many families in our borough are struggling to put enough food on the table for their children. The Trussell Trust handed out around

9,500 emergency food parcels alone in Southwark last year, but this is just the tip of the iceberg with local independent foodbanks that I have visited, such as Peckham Pantry, struggling to meet demand.

Four officers are now being investigated for alleged gross misconduct over the Child Q case and the Met must urgently learn lessons from this appalling incident which has wrecked the life of a young person and her family. Whatever the situation, where it involves children, safeguarding is paramount.

Of course there will be nothing for us local people. I can’t believe how the #elephantandcastle #newkentroad #oldkentroad #walworthroad #Eaststreetmarket and #bermondsey has changed over the years because of very large building developers not listening to what us local people would like.

Parents are vital to schools in hard times

I

t is vitally important that parents are aware of the problem that schools in Southwark and indeed across London are facing as a result of pupil numbers dropping.

This is so they can add their voice to that of the council to ask the government to ensure that their children, after an unprecedented time of hardship with lockdown and restrictions, are given the best education without head teachers having to grapple with balancing impossible budgets.

This week, after almost a month of inquiries from this paper, the council finally revealed that sixteen schools are in financial crisis. They have a deficit because school funding is reliant on the number of pupils attending. Many more could follow suit and find themselves in deficit, but we all know that over time populations, especially in central London, increase as well as fall.

All hope is not lost. The council has reassured parents that closure would only happen as a very last resort and after a lengthy consultation process that could take years. The council is committed to retaining school buildings as educational centres that cannot be sold for luxury flats, as has happened in years gone by. But there are also a whole range of avenues that the council can pursue before shutting schools’ doors for good. The council has spoken about mergers, restructuring, and renegotiating structures. There is even the possibility of community fundraising.

If a school does close, the council wants parents to know that it will have been in pupils’ best interests. In such an event, council education staff would work with parents to help secure places for their children at other schools – 95% of which are rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted.

We found that the council was very reluctant to share any information about the problems facing its schools. The last thing is for people to panic unnecessarily. But by sharing briefing papers and correspondence with the News we hope that parents will join in the call for a fair funding formula for their school and others .

Parents are left frustrated when they are not aware of what’s going on, and they are a vital source of strength for schools in the challenges that lie ahead.

After all, the council’s letter to minister Nadhim Zahawi asking for more investment is a start, but it’s unlikely to bear fruit in the medium term given the financial crisis the country is facing. Who is most invested in the success of schools? Who can be relied upon to pull out the stops when the going gets tough? Of course, it’s the parents.

The outpouring of emotion that accompanied the closure of St John’s Primary School in Walworth last year demonstrates the deep connection parents feel with their children’s schools.

As Cllr Jasmine Ali wrote in her statement: “Parents put their trust in the school, and it becomes an extension of their family.”

Taxi to the Old Vic!

The one-set taxi office was placed within a huge panoramic photo of 1970s Pittsburgh, and when the cakewalking, Jivetalking taxi drivers arrived they began to talk excitedly to each other about how good life was right now. However, August Wilson’s Jitney (an illegal cab firm that offers cheap fares for cheap rides in cheap cars) tells another side to their truth, writes Michael Holland...

This motley crew came from different backgrounds. There was a Vietnam vet, a jack-the-lad who thought he was God’s gift, much to the annoyance of at least one other driver; a drunk, and another who deemed himself the checkers champ of the world. He couldn’t win a game. But they had one thing in common: they were black and they were poor, and for most this driving job was just one of many different kinds of work they had to do to survive: work security on a door, run a numbers game… They worked extra jobs because they had to and their backstories explained why.

Being an all-male team the office conversations invariably revolved around male banter like who was the prettiest girl, but this was mainly their egos talking to create a facade for the world, a mask that they could hide behind. When their guards came down Jitney became more interesting.

Of course, with all those alpha males coming together in that restricted space there will be clashes, differences of opinions, generation gaps, and conflicting attitudes, which Becker, the boss, has to referee. And all while the city developers are planning to knock down their building, putting them not just out of work but below the breadline. Once the eviction knowledge got out any frictions rubbed harder and faster. Becker’s

estranged son was also getting out of jail after 20 years inside - Twenty years where Becker had refused to visit or speak to his murderer son.

At the interval, myself and theatre enthusiast, Julia, discussed our enjoyment of Jitney while also wondering what the point of it was.

Where was it heading? What was the narrative?

Of course, there was a point and a narrative, which became clearer after the break. This 40-year-old play resonates as powerfully today as it would have then. But we are now very much aware of how the black population have been held back by institutional racism in just about every area of employment; we are extremely knowledgeable about how greedy developers run roughshod over whole workingclass communities by moving them out to build apartments in glass and steel towers as investments for overseas buyers and are in an era where racism is out front and centre, not hidden away as it once was.

Act Two shows how these men struggled on with their lives every day, hoping beyond hope that their efforts would help future generations. We felt their pain.

At the end, all loose ends were tied. The awkward situation between Becker and his son Booster worsened before it finally resolved itself. - in a fashion. The regeneration was a metaphor for how the relationships between the men - as well as their lives constantly regenerated.

The performances were all exceptional in this production that cuts a slice of life out of 70s America.

Immerse yourself in the Madhouse

We were met with a simple set; a table adorned with a few office-like accessories, a woman in period clothing standing behind it, and a gauze curtain in front to distance the stage from the audience. We were in Nelly Bly’s Ten Days In A Madhouse, writes Michael Holland....

Nelly (Lindsey Huebner) put forward her case for employment to a prestigious New York newspaper owner. Her interviewer had already ignored her previous attempts for an interview, but she had tricked her way in to see him. The bigwig magnate admires her pluck but because this is the 19th century when women were supposed to, well, not have pluck - or ballbearings as this man alludes to - he gives her a hard time. The interview is a test but Nelly passes, so he sets her a task that she must pass to get regular employment; Nelly Bly has to convince the authorities she is mad enough to be sent to the asylum where rumours have been leaking out about mistreatment of the patients. This is far from what she was hoping to sign up for…

He was actually setting Nelly up to fail to justify his own outlook on life and the role of women in it. This was a time when women could be sectioned for just about anything, by any family member that didn’t like them, so this was a story that needed to be told, but Nelly, now being put on the spot, summoned up her inner strength and went for it in order to get that job at the end. Fortunately for her being a woman meant it wasn’t that hard to be locked away. Unfortunately, she soon found that it

might not be that easy to get out again. And so the ten days begin.

Under extreme stress on admission to the ‘madhouse’, Nelly forgot her prepared fake name so made up another one with a fake Spanish accent to go with it.

Straightaway she had made it difficult for her boss to find her in the mental health system at the designated time they had agreed on.

Nelly began each day by telling the nurse (You could never see a doctor) that she is sane and should not be there, not realising that every patient in there will be saying the same thing and that the nurses have a stock answer and response for these patients that don’t toe the line. There was a routine at Bellevue and God forbid anyone that upset the equilibrium set by the staff.

Nelly pretended to take the medication they gave her, which seemed designed to merely keep the patients quiet and no trouble. Nelly was trouble and she saw women in there who should not have been there She empathised with their plight and wanted to save them from this man-made hell. At least Nelly had pretended crazy for a reason, these were innocent women caught up in a patriarchal nightmare.

Before long the staff got fed up with Nelly’s attitude and she was dragged off for the water torture. From then on it was downhill for Ms Bly. This woman of sound mind was eventually sent insane by a system set up to keep women subdued rather than helped and encouraged to get well. Nelly, like the women she had befriended, was in a no-hope situation

with no escape. And we were there with her.

With much difficulty, Nelly was eventually rescued, but her fellow patients were not. She was not the same woman that went in.

Amazingly, all this is a one-woman show. Lindsey Huebner worked only with projected graphics for her tormentors, balloons on strings for her fellow patients and a psychedelic soundscape and video to take us into her world. It worked. And adding to the claustrophobic terror of a system where you were regularly beaten and told you are never getting out, we, the audience, were given headphones so that we were also trapped in Nelly’s world.

Huebner goes through the whole gamut of life’s emotions in the 90 minutes she is on stage talking to nobody, like a mad person, with the projections dragging us into her madness. Ten Days In A Madhouse is not an easy ride but it is a ride worth taking.

This multi-sensory immersive experience is a true story about the pioneer of investigative journalism. See it and live it in Douglas Baker’s adaptation of the report Nelly published from her time in the madhouse.

Lifelike dummy dangled from bridge 40 years on from mystery murder of ‘God’s Banker’

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk People walking past Blackfriars Bridge early last Saturday morning, June 18, might have been surprised to see what looked like a body dangling off the edge.

The life-like dummy was put there by artist Red Jay at about 7.30am to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the death of Roberto Calvi - the man nicknamed ‘God’s Banker’ because of his work with the Vatican.

Red Jay also threw handfuls of blank Vatican Bank cheques into the air before walking off the bridge as part of the bizarre anti-Vatican stunt.

The dummy was dropped into the Thames by someone thought to be a security guard, after hanging off the bridge for about ten minutes.

Roberto Calvi, director of major Italian bank Banco Ambrosiano, was murdered on June 17 1982, and was found dead hanging from Blackfriars Bridge. His death was treated as a suicide at first, before a 2002 inquest ruled it a murder.

At the time of Mr Calvi’s death, Banco Ambrosiano, of which the Vatican Bank was a major shareholder, was embroiled in a scandal that would lead to its collapse.

The Vatican and the Mafia were both rumoured to be involved in Mr Calvi’s death but no one has ever been convicted.

Tower Bridge’s hidden historical marvel that goes unnoticed by thousands every day

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Every day, thousands of tourists and commuters cross Tower Bridge. But very few notice the historical gem discreetly nestled in between the rows of lamposts.

On the north side of the Victorian era bridge is a chimney, painted bright blue to look like its adjacent lamposts, a symbol of 19th century London’s industrial underbelly.

For decades, bridge guards would warm their hands in a coal fire room tucked beneath the bridge, with the smoke being sent up through the chimney and out across the Thames.

But by the 1950s, Londoners had become sick of the London smog and the government passed the 1956 Clean Air Act which meant only smokeless fuels could be burned in certain, central areas.

But over fifty years later, long after the coal fire has been removed, the chimney remains, offering Londoners a quaint reminder of what the city used to be like.

Life Before Kingsdale – Work in Schools and the Local Community The Hon. Alderman of Southwark, Mrs Norma Gibbes, joined the Governing Body of Kingsdale School in 1997 at the request of the Local Authority, following her retirement from Headship.

Before joining Kingsdale as Governor, Norma had already made a huge impact in both her professional career and in the community. Norma was to continue this well-established pattern of impactful leadership in her new role, firstly as a Governor and later as the Chair of the Governing Body for over 20 years.

Norma Hart was born in 1943 in, Free Town, St Catherine, Jamaica. In 1958 she left for London, where she went to secondary school and continued on to Teacher Training College between 1961 and 1964.

Norma married Asquith Gibbes in 1964 and started working as a teacher in London. She was a founder and member of the Caribbean Teachers’ Association which later set up a training project for young people in Camberwell. With the assistance of a number of community groups, she also printed pamphlets to inform parents about the educational system and organised a series of educational programmes on Black Londoners.

Norma Gibbes also worked with Asian community leaders to set up a National Black Educational Organisation. She was invited to be the Chair of Trustees at Pagnell Street Youth and Committee Centre by Sybil Phoenix in the late 1970s and she acted as the Executive Chair between December 1980 and April 1982, leaving the centre in 1985. When she left, Norma, took what records she could and deposited them with the Black Cultural Archives.

During her highly successful career, Norma worked consistently as a teacher at schools in Southwark. She was one of the first black Headteachers in London; becoming Deputy Headteacher at Dick Sheppard School in Tulse Hill in April 1983 and Acting Headteacher in 1988. In January 1989 she was appointed Headteacher of Warwick Park School in Peckham, Southwark, a post which she held until her retirement in August 1997.

Whilst Headteacher, Norma worked tirelessly to support the students and teachers in her care. For instance, Norma arranged for the then Chief Inspector of the Inner London Education Authority to visit her school to explain first-hand, the disadvantageous position that black teachers were in at that time, particular when applying for senior positions, including Headships; at that time, clear selection criteria were not in use, so unsuccessful candidates were often given farcical or artificial reasons for an apparent lack of success at interview. After one such experience, Norma contacted the Chief Inspector who asked to meet. Norma declined, saying that when selection criteria were discussed by the Local Authority, she would accept the invitation! In the following September, selection criteria were introduced for all teaching posts.

As Headteacher, Norma was also invited to become a Trustee of the Newcomen Foundation. In her usual style, Norma persuaded the trustees to give a sum of money to local secondary schools to provide for students from low-income families to enable them to buy much needed items of

Norma with her son Asquith Junior school clothing to help encourage them to attend school more regularly.

Many of the eligible students were in dire need of support and while the grants did take a long time to arrive, they were life changing when they did. This was down to Norma’s care of the vulnerable members of the community and her persistence in securing help for them.

Norma was also a Corporation Member at Southwark College from 1997, a member of the Advisory Commission on the Misuse of Drugs and a nonexecutive Director of a Health Trust.

Years of Public Service as A Local Councillor On her retirement from Headship, Norma became a local Councillor in Southwark in 1998 and served for 12 years. In this role, Norma demonstrated the same passion and dedication that she has brought to her teaching career and continued to show as a member of the Kingsdale Governing Body.

As a Ward Councillor, Norma regularly met with the local residents in her care, helping them and answering any queries, including those relating to housing and other pressing matters. She also chaired the Labour Group, having been asked one day when she was cooking lunch! Norma enjoyed this role but reported that she had to draw upon her extensive experience as a Headteacher to chair the meetings, which could often be demanding.

One of the responsibilities Norma particularly enjoyed as a Councillor was as Chair of one of the nine Community Councils, which represented the combined constituents of three wards. These important instruments of local politics in action, held themed meetings and invited public discussions following presentations from officers and other interested parties. In her role as Chair, Norma was responsible for following up on the issues raised, which involved conversations with the relevant officers and internalising vast amounts of information relating to a wide range of matters.

The position of the Community Council Chair, also bestowed yet another responsibility on Norma, that of the Chair of Planning, overseeing the committee that considered all applications for new buildings and changes to existing buildings to which local residents may have objected. Norma found the role challenging yet also rewarding and ensured that she used her extensive people skills to engage and utilise the skills of her fellow committee members, particularly on difficult issues, such as projects for the regeneration of the Camberwell area.

It goes without saying that despite not being a full-time Councillor, Norma’s considerable and sustained contributions to the local community as a long-standing councillor required not only dedication but also many hours.

Norma only recalls that it was a truly stimulating and creative way to spend her time.

Incredibly, not only was Kingsdale transformed from one of the least popular schools in London, identified by the Local Authority for closure, to the most popular school on record in the history of English schools but the Chief Inspector became one of its biggest advocates using it as a national example of what exceptional leadership can do.

As Chair and working closely with the Headteacher, Mr Morrison, Norma oversaw a time of genuine and hugely positive transformation in the direction, fortunes and ultimately the history of the school, bringing her usual insight, passion, dedication and drive to the role. Norma always offered her full support to the school, sharing critical observations and views without fear or favour, whilst also taking ownership with her excellent teams of governors for policy decisions. Norma considered that being subjected to discrimination, unfairness, envy and bias was part of the role and never for a second lost focus on improving outcomes for students.

Norma had a love for the disadvantaged and underprivileged and throughout her association with Kingsdale was one of the greatest champions for children with special needs and disabilities. Nowhere was this seen more evidently, than in Norma’s ongoing focus on the school’s Annexe provisions; small, holistic support centres for students who may be struggling with mainstream education. On every visit to the school, Norma would always ensure she visited the Annexe provisions, taking time to personally engage with the students there, listen to their experiences and provide both guidance and support. Not surprisingly, the students who have attended the Annexes over the years, remember Norma very fondly and appreciate the fact that she was looking after them. She developed a special bond with students many others felt should have been permanently excluded.

As a lasting tribute to her memory our Additional Learning Support provisions were renamed in her honour as follows: The Norma Gibbes Supplementary School and The Gibbes Academy of Excellence Norma was passionate about ensuring that the most vulnerable in society are supported, nurtured and protected.

Norma’s enormous contribution to the school over many years cannot be overstated, from overseeing the essential and important functions of governance to visiting the school as part of her rigorous quality assurance.

On behalf of former and current students, parents and staff we express our gratitude for a lifetime of tremendous service to Kingsdale.

Mrs Norma Gibbes passed away peacefully in June 2022.

Somerset captain Lewis Gregory took 3 for 25, after Roelof van der Merwe had bowled Smith in the eighth over

after an opening stand of 49.

Earlier, Lewis Goldsworthy had taken four fours from the last two overs of Somerset’s innings, ending on 27 not out from 19 balls and adding 41 in just over four overs after a slump to 103 for

advanced to 21 in the sixth over without undue difficulty until Kamran Munawar, playing his first 1st XI game back at Dulwich after two years away, made the breakthrough. Simon Harwood picked up the next two wickets to make it 58-3 after 17 overs. Harwood came off after taking 2-35 off ten overs, and gave way to 17 year old leg spinner Ahmed Khan who caused immediate problems. In six overs up to lunch he took 1-3, while Frankie Brown also picked up a wicket at the other end.

Wimbledonians went into the interval at 101-5 after 32 overs.

On the resumption Dulwich turned for

the first time to Jon Lodwick, who took a wicket with his first ball and another with his fourth. Khan struck again in the next over, but the ninth wicket pair lifted the score to 119 when Khan took the crucial wicket of opening bat Sushant Marathe, who had held the innings together with 59, off 98 balls, while no one else made more than 13. Khan followed up by dismissing the last man to end with the excellent figures of 4-11 off 10.5 overs.

Dulwich were pleased to have taken the last five wickets for 20 runs and bowl out their opponents for 123 after 40.5 overs.

Chris Jordan’s team were already guaranteed a quarter-final place, before this game began, but perhaps Somerset should have won this one after former Australia paceman Siddle had struck with the second, fourth and fifth balls of that final over, which began with Surrey needing only nine and with Jordan and opener Will Jacks going well.

They had rallied Surrey from 106 for 4 in the 16th over, with 15 runs being plundered from the penultimate over as Jacks pulled Jack Brooks for six and Jordan cut the last ball, a yorker just wide of off stump, for four to backward point.

But, after Jacks had taken a single from the first ball of Siddle’s final over, to go to 66 not out from 58 balls with two sixes and five fours, the 23-year old could only watch with mounting horror from the non-striker’s end as Jordan skied a catch to Tom Lammonby running in from deep mid wicket to exit for 14.

Nico Reifer, a 21-year old making his T20 debut, clipped his first ball to long leg for four but was then yorked by a beauty from Siddle. Gus Atkinson, swinging when he should have been tapping and running, was also bowled by a full ball and Siddle was looking for a hat-trick as well as a match-winning delivery when he ran in to McKerr.

But the big fast bowler, making his first Surrey appearance of the season, anticipated another full ball and hit it powerfully to the boundary. It was tough on Somerset, who had fought hard on a slow, used surface, but they are now five points behind Surrey in second place in the South Group table Missing six players on England duty, and nursing the news that their West Indian overseas star Kieron Pollard is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, Surrey also lost Jordan Clark three balls into his second over with a side injury.

Lammonby tried to counter-attack, immediately top-edging a pull at McKerr for six and then flipping a four to fine leg, but Narine’s miserly and mystery spin was introduced for the tenth over and the Trinidadian went on to bowl his four overs for just 18 runs – with Lammonby run out for 21 in his second over, the 12th, when keeper Smith threw down the stumps from short cover after Gregory sent his partner back.

by Jordan in the runless 15th over, skied the fifth ball to mid on as he desperately tried to break the shackles and Somerset had edged only from 83 for 4 at halfway to 103 for 7 by the end of that over.

And the scoreboard quickly read 103 for 8 when Van der Merwe, swinging wildly, was bowled for 3 by a McKerr near-yorker, leaving Goldsworthy to shepherd Somerset at least to some sort of defendable total.

Match-winner McKerr said: “I don’t think I’ve ever felt so excited on a cricket pitch. As it came off the bat and I knew it was going to the ropes I was screaming and running across the field.

To be able to finish the game off like that was pretty cool.

Jacks, whose unbeaten 66 was the only half-century of the game – ahead of Somerset opener Tom Banton’s 39, the next-best score – said: “It was such a topsy-turvy game and chase, and that last over felt like a whole game in itself.

It was simply a real rollercoaster of a match, and when Gus got out from the second last ball I was pretty annoyed because I knew I was not going to be able to get back on strike.

“I told Conor just to hit it out of the park and thankfully he found the boundary and that finish and final over will be remembered for a long time.

In the end, the fact that Chris [Jordan] and I managed to take 15 runs from the penultimate over was the reason we were able to just get over the line. But it was an unbelievable game.”

Dulwich take just three bowling points from this match and remain at the foot of the table. They will be looking to turn their season around next week when they have a crucial bottom of the table clash at home to Beddington, who are two places and just 13 points above them.

Hamlet to host Lions Arsenal under-23s also heading to Champion Hill

Kevin Nugent’s Lions under-23 side will visit Champion Hill on July 19. Gavin Rose’s team will also host League Two Sutton United and

Arsenal under-23s.

The Hamlet will have away games at Whitehawk of the Isthmian League South East Division, their league rivals Farnborough, and Maidstone United, who were promoted to National League last season as champions.

Meanwhile, Dulwich will announce the result of their Trust Board election at the DHST Annual General Meeting, which takes place at 7pm on June 28, 2022 in the club bar.

The Fish enjoyed another successful season at all levels and senior manager Ajay Ashanike will be excited with the talent potentially coming through.

In a video message to the young players,

former West Ham, Leeds and Manchester United defender Ferdinand said: “Fisher Athletic, I used to play against them back in the day. Listen, make sure you have a good day. Presentation day is always one to look forward to, a few trophies being handed out: player of the year, players’ player, most improved player, I’m sure.

“So good luck, guys, I hope you’ve had a really good season and let’s support England in the World Cup coming up in November.

“Have an unbelievable day because these days are ones to remember.

“Well done. See you all.”

The message was organised by James McLeary, whose son, Jimmy Devonish, 11, plays for Fisher.

“Rio is a friend of mine from when we were young kids,” James explained to the News. “We played together for a team called Bloomfield in south London.

“He’s a lovely fella, he does a lot of stuff for charity. We hadn’t spoken for a while becuase he’s so busy with his various committments with charities and media.

“The kids loved it, they were over the moon. Rio did it a few years ago as well.

Football returns to Peckham’s Menace Arena

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk PECKHAM TOWN’S season kicks off the weekend of August 13 - and the club are urging people to “join the Menace family”.

Under the guidance of Mary Phillip, Peckham are making great strides and are preparing for the Kent County Premier Division season.

Football will return to the Menace Arena on July 9 when Enfield Borough cross the river. They finished fifteenth in Combined Counties League Division One (Step 6) last season, and have transferred to Eastern Counties League Division One South for this campaign.

Lydd Town, from Southern Counties East League Division One (Step 6), who also finished fifteenth last season, will travel from the Kent coast on July 16.

Paulsgrove, of the the Hampshire Premier League (Step 7), will travel from Portsmouth the following Saturday.

Finally, Peckham will play London Samurai Rovers. The club was founded in 2017 for the Japanese diaspora. They were promoted to the Combined Counties League Division One (Step 6) for the first time last season, where they finished seventeenth.

All matches will be free for season ticket holders. Season tickets cost £50 and that guarantees entry to fifteen league games and the four friendlies for adults (16+).

For those without season tickets, the entry for friendlies is £4 and under-16s can get in for free.

Millwall bid farewell to Romeo

By Alex Jones sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL DEFENDER Mahlon Romeo has signed for Championship rivals Cardiff City on an undisclosed fee.

Romeo, 26, joined the Lions from Gillingham in 2015, making 221 appearances for the club over a six year period.

He was part of the squad that won promotion from League One in 2016/17, playing the full 90 minutes in that season’s playoff final win against Bradford City.

The Antigua and Barbuda international spent last season on loan at League One outfit Portsmouth, where he played 39 games for Danny Cowley’s side as they missed out on a top six finish by ten points.

The transfer sees Romeo reunite with former teammate Steve Morison, who now manages the Welsh club. The pair spent four years together at The Den during the latter’s second spell at the club.

“Obviously, I know Mahlon really well,” Morison told Cardiff’s official media channels.

“I was with him when he came through, when he was a young pup.

For me this is a perfect move for him.

“He’s going to bring bags of athleticism, real quality on the ball, and I can’t wait to see him galloping up the touchline.”

Ferguson, 22, joined the Dons from Hamilton Academical in 2018, going on to make 132 appearances in the Scottish Premiership over four years, scoring 27 goals.

He finished last season as Aberdeen’s top scorer, finding the back of the net 11 times in 37 games from midfield.

Reports have suggested that the Lions have submitted a £1.5 million bid for the Scotland international, who has previously been linked with a move to Celtic, Rangers, Watford and Cagliari.

The transfer, should it go through, would make Ferguson one of Millwall’s most expensive signings in the club’s history. However, the Dons are apparently set to reject the bid and ask for at least £3 million instead.

The midfielder attempted to leave the Pittodrie Stadium last summer, but Aberdeen blocked his departure, forcing him to stay for another campaign. After finishing 10th in the Scottish Premiership last season, the expectation is that Ferguson will finally move on this summer.

The Millwall legend spent almost two decades as the Lions’ all-time top scorer, having found the back of the net 111 times across his eight year stint at The Den that lasted from 1983 to 1991.

But despite having three Premier League titles and a Champions League winner’s medal, the former England international hasn’t been afraid to step back onto the pitch for a good cause Sheringham, now 56, started for the England team in Soccer Aid 2022, playing 30 minutes at the London

Stadium in front of more than 54,000 fans.

“It was absolutely brilliant. It’s probably one of the best things I’ve been involved in for many years,” Sheringham told the News.

“The whole feeling was all about what we’re there for, to earn money for UNICEF and help the children around the world. To be part of it was just a lovely feeling.

“It’s unlike any other football match you’re involved in because there’s no animosity, there’s no cheering for the other team or trying to put the other team down.

“It’s just a loving feeling all the way around, and I can’t tell you how emotional it was and how much everybody loved it, from the players to the celebs to the people working behind the scenes. It was just something truly memorable to be

involved in.”

This year’s event raised more than £15 million for charity, the highest amount ever achieved by a SoccerAid match.

However, after a 25-year professional career and a number of charity appearances post-retirement, Sheringham says that he’s finally ready to hang up his boots for the last time.

“First and foremost, you want to try and put on a show so you’re not remembered for being an old fart who can’t get about the pitch anymore!

“I played in it when I was 44, 46 and 48 I think, now I’m 56 it’s a little bit too much for me. The body just can’t hold up anymore.

“I had a dodgy knee going into the game and ended up coming off because my calves were being stretched to high heaven. I lasted half-an-hour but I’m

delighted that I was involved.

“I’ve said no more, this is my last SoccerAid and what a great one to be involved in.”

While Sheringham is perhaps best remembered for his involvement in Manchester United’s golden generation, he hasn’t forgotten where he started his career “I still follow them, but I don’t get back over there much. My son’s still playing so I go and watch him as much as I can.

“It shows you what good management does. It does help if you’ve got good players, without a doubt, but if you’ve got a good manager who can get everybody on side and rowing in the same direction, then you’ve got a chance.

“We definitely did that all those years ago, and it seems like they’re doing that now.”

By Alex Jones sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL PLAYERS returned to pre-season training on Wednesday morning, with the new Championship campaign a little over a month away.

The first-team squad had a testing day where the medical team screened the players to judge their physical fitness, while tactical preparations will likely begin when the Lions travel to Ireland for their training camp on Monday.

The club have arranged three preseason fixtures so far: two away games against Dartford and Colchester United respectively, as well as a home match against

Ipswich Town. There are still hopes of hosting foreign opposition at The Den before the start of the new season.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett spoke to the News about the challenges his side will face in July’s friendly games.

“The aim is always to build up the challenge, and have different tests within there. Ideally you want to start at non-league and build all the way up to Premier League or equivalent opposition.

“It’s not just about playing games and winning games, it’s more about the conditioning of the players and about working tactically in different games.

“We’ve got a nice blend of those and a pretty robust training programme within that. In some of the games, the players will be fatigued

on purpose because that’s part of the physical programme.

Much of the preparation will actually be off the pitch, as Rowett is keen to make tactical changes ahead of the new campaign. Millwall spent much of last season playing with a back five, and the Lions manager is keen to persevere with his preferred formation.

“We found a system that we think really works for us, but we’ve got to improve to stay where we are.

“There’s teams that have won promotion from this division playing a five, there’s teams who’ve won the Champions League playing a five and there’s teams who’ve won the World Cup playing a five.

“It’s how you play that five, and our challenge is to improve it. We’re always

flexible to change, last season we played 5-2-1-2 a lot more, so we had a tweak on that 5-2-3 system. We flipped to a four in different games to chase it.

“You start off with the basics of what you want to do, which I think will be the five. But what we need is more options within that five so we can change during games. That’s the key, we’re not going to go gung ho every game because it’s all about balance in football.

What effect that’ll have on next season’s results remains to be seen, but Rowett is optimistic that Millwall can finally bridge the gap to the playoff places if their summer recruitment is good enough.

“To a certain degree, I think we’ll see more of the same but we need to improve in certain areas. Most of

our success so far has been built on very strong, aggressive, defensive foundations. We’re the type of team and type of club where we have to have that competitive nature about us, we have to be a team that’s really difficult to play against.

“We want to try and move the team down a slightly different route where we can attack with a few more numbers and a little bit more incision and quality.

We have to stay true to how we want to play, but we need to improve that.

“We’ve finished just outside the top six previously, and everyone knows that the aim is to try and get in that top six. So to do that, we need to bring some different players in with different attributes, and we need to continue to strengthen the squad in a similar way to last year.”

The club are yet to announce their first signing of the summer transfer window, but Rowett is keen to reassure fans that negotiations are ongoing with a number of players.

“Every manager would like to have every single player that they want in the building before the first

day back. I’ve never done that in 10 years as a manager, so I know how unrealistic that is.

“The key for me is that I could’ve filled two teams with players already, but it’s about getting the right players and about getting the ones that make a difference.

“We’re working incredibly hard and we’re hoping to get some things over the line in the next two or three days. I’m certainly hoping to get a few things over the line before we go to Ireland.

“We’ve put some very good bids in, we’ve had two that would’ve been clear of our club record this summer so far. We’ve got a lot of ambition about us, and I think we’ll bring in some very good players.

But it’s hard to get them in as quickly as you’d like.”

Millwall reportedly offered £1.5 million for Scottish international Lewis Ferguson, but Aberdeen are set to reject their bid and ask for at least double that amount.

However, Rowett believes that this is a statement of the Lions’ intent, and that the club will be able to spend a significant amount of money this summer.

“It shows what we have to try and do. John [Berylson] has been very supportive and excited about our possibilities this year.

“A lot of the players that we’ve been linked with are clearly players that would make us better. That’s why only those linked are out

there, because we want those types of players and we’re prepared to really push hard to get them.

“I think we’ve had six or seven players go out this summer, probably two or three really key players. So I think we want to replace a similar amount and maybe bring in three or four key players that can go straight into a team.

“Other than goalkeepers, we want to strengthen in every other area in some way. Some areas we might be a bit more flexible in terms of a player playing in two or three positions, which has worked well for us previously. But we know that, particularly in the attacking areas, we’ll want to strengthen.”

Wallace, 28, has been linked with a move to a number of clubs this summer, most recently Vincent Kompany’s Burnley.

Millwall have offered the winger a new contract to remain at the club, which the Lions boss claimed is “a very very good deal.”

“At some point, he’s going to have to make a decision with what he wants to do with his future,” Rowett explained.

“My argument to that is that he’s a fantastic player. Of course we’d love him to re-sign for us, but at the same time we have to have our own plans and move forward how we want to move forward.

“We’d always be open to Jed resigning. He knows where we are, we know where he is, and we’ll work incredibly hard to push forward with the other plans that we’ve got.

“I’m sure Jed’s got lots of other offers. He’s been made a really good offer by us, just to show desperation and ambition to try and keep our best players.

“He has to make a decision essentially. He’s out contract at the club and his future is up to him. We’ll have to start moving forward with what we’re doing.”
