Editorial United front needed

T’S REFRESHING and encouraging to see politicians trying to work together on the problem of knife crime in our borough - such a serious issue should go beyond the confines of political parties.

Sadly it’s all too rare a thing, as politicians and their parties define themselves as much by what they oppose in other parties’manifestos as by what they stand for. And in fairness to them, we’d all complain if there was scant difference between the main parties, and would say there was no clear choice.

There will also be real differences of opinion on how best to tackle the scourge of knife crime, and plenty of accusations over who was responsible for cutting vital outreach services, for falling police numbers and so on.

Yet beyond the mudslinging, there is still room for political consensus - and a united front from the borough’s politicians should have a greater impact with government.

The scale of this problem demands a response from our political representatives that isn’t seeking to make political capital, but just wants to bring all talent round the table and find the best solutions.

Summer struggles

UR REPORT on page 15 on the doubling of client numbers at a Peckham foodbank over the summer holidays makes for worrying reading.

It stands to reason that the pressure on parents during long summer school breaks intensifies, as they strive to juggle jobs with childcare. And given the cost of activities and childcare, and the absence of free school meals for that period, unless you have the support of family members, costs can quickly spiral out of control.

It’s a sad thing that what is the highlight of the year for young people - those glorious long summer holidays - can become something their parents dread, having to resort to foodbanks to try to make ends meet. The efforts of foodbanks to provide sustenance and support for the most needy deserve all our admiration.

1500 kids want to be record breakers!

Schoolchildren volunteer to help beat Guinness World Record for the most contributions to a colour-by-numbers painting

LOCAL SCHOOLCHILDREN will transform Herne Hill station’s dark underpass into a colourful mural in September.

Around 1,500 local primary kids from Herne Hill have volunteered to help beat the Guinness World Record for the most contributions to a colour-by-numbers painting, and are aiming to complete this mammoth task on a single day.

Previous record holders, ‘Sam’s Club’ from America, achieved 455 participants so the organisers, Herne Hill Forum, are confident that with the help of the primary schoolchildren they will successfully beat the world record.

Herne Hill Forum has commissioned

local artist Victor Szepessy to create a design for the 40 metre long mural, which will celebrate the area’s culture and history.

Victor told the News: “I asked the Herne Hillians what they wanted in their mural and they’ve been telling me or tweeting me their ideas, from the Carnegie library, to the old cinema grand, Brockwell Hall, chicken shops, bats, foxes and Olley’s fish and chips.

“I also used all the books published by Herne Hill Society to research and include important landmarks and notable people.”

He was inspired to make the project a community project as he was working on the Brockwell Passage mural.

“As I was painting the outline on the wall”, he explained, “local kids started running up and asking if they could colour

in, so I gave them brushes and paint and we ended up making it together.

“It was a very dynamic process and after it was finished we saw kids going by with their parents, pointing and saying ‘I made that.’ I hope that creating a nice space together as a community will give the kids and everyone involved a sense of connection to and pride in their area. And that we can experience what we’re capable of when we all work together in divided times.”

Children from seven schools in Herne Hill; Jessop, Michael Tippett, Herne Hill School, St Jude’s, Turney, Rosendale and Judith Kerr, have been asked to lend their help with the project. They aim to colour the mural with paint pens in one day.

The organisers said, “Everyone is welcome to get stuck in and help

complete the world record from 4pm to 8.pm! Adults and children accompanied with an adult from across Herne Hill should meet at the station to register.”

The transformation of the underpass is being led by Herne Hill Forum with funding, resources and support from Aviva, Southeastern, Network Rail, Lambeth Council and local businesses, and will take place on Wednesday 12th September in Station Square, Herne Hill.

Lucy Reynolds, Project Manager of Herne Hill Forum explained, “The idea behind the world record attempt was to give the children of Herne Hill a day they will remember for the rest of their lives, whilst creating a beautiful space right at the heart of the Herne Hill community.

The mural was inspired by local residents who wanted to have a focal point where they can understand the history of where they live.”

The renovation of the underpass marks the beginning of a wider regeneration programme in Herne Hill, which Herne

Hill forum intend to culminate in the regeneration of the space above the station. As it stands, the room above the station inaccessible, but the Forum is working with South Eastern to plan potential uses for the space as a community hub.

Renovations have already begun in the station, with Southeastern investing in new strip lighting, removing anti-graffiti panelling, and repainting. New display boards will be installed, allowing the local community to display artwork, exhibitions and local information.

Lucy Reynolds said, “The space above the station is huge, with beautiful views across Herne Hill. Our vision is to turn this forgotten place into a vibrant forum for events, activities and entrepreneurship, harnessing the demand for a new civic space right at the heart of our community.

We would love to hear people’s ideas for how we might use this space.”

Police called to man suffering stab wounds

CAMBERWELL: Police have confirmed yet another stabbing last weekend in the Loughborough Junction area after officers were called to a man suffering multiple stab wounds.

Officers were called by the London Ambulance Service at 03:45 am on Sunday, August 12, to reports of a man suffering stab wounds on Loughborough Road, between Camberwell and Brixton.

A 20-year-old man was taken to a south London hospital with injuries described as ‘non-life-threatening or life-changing’.

It is believed he may have been assaulted on nearby Major Road.

There have been no arrests in connection with this incident and police say enquiries continue.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lambeth CID via 101 quoting reference 1331/12Aug.

Girls missing from their homes for five days

THE MOTHERS of two teenage girls who went missing for five days have thanked the public and police for their help finding the schoolgirls.

A manhunt was launched after friends Jayden Hassan and J’Nea Beecher, both fourteen, disappeared last Monday, August 6.

The News broke the story that the pair were last seen leaving J’Nea’s family home in Nunhead that afternoon and had told their parents they were going to a teen festival

But their parents raised the alarm after the friends failed to return home for their curfew.

J’Nea’s mum Samantha Brown, 46, has revealed police found the pair at a children’s home in Essex, in the early hours of Saturday, where they were said to be visiting someone they knew.

Speaking to the News this week, Ms Brown said: “I was expecting the worst because they say the first 48 hours are the most important and things could go downhill very rapidly.

“I just want to thank everyone for their support; it’s been a difficult time for everybody but there’s just been so much love and support throughout.

“J’Nea realises it could have turned out so horribly wrong and never again to do anything like this again.

“It could have quite easily not panned out the way it has.”

Jayden’s mum Terrie Mulholland, 36, also thanked Croydon and Southwark police for their help finding the girls.

Metropolitan Police confirmed Jayden and J’Nea had been found on Saturday and thanked the media and public for their assistance.

‘Amazing’ - mum praises community after family offered home to young girl while she battled rare cancer ROTHERHITHE

THE ADOPTIVE mother of a baby diagnosed with a rare eye cancer has thanked the Rotherhithe family who took them in and ultimately saved her daughter’s life.

Not long after taking her daughter Chloe home from an orphanage in Kenya, 49year-old Isabel noticed something wasn’t quite right with one of her eyes.

Having previously read an article about retinoblastoma – a rare cancer of the retina usually seen in children under the age of five – Isabel recognised what it was immediately.

“My heart just dropped,” said Isabel, who used to work in Canary Wharf. “The sun was coming into the room and hitting her eye at a particular angle and I saw a translucent pupil and I recognised it straightaway.”

In February this year, Isabel’s fears were confirmed when she got the devastating news that Chloe had retinoblastoma and needed treatment urgently.

The new mum said she was advised by doctors in Kenya to get treatment in the UK if possible, since she was born in Aberdeen and had dual citizenship, as all they could do in Kenya was remove Chloe’s eye.

in Rotherhithe and whom she met at a fertility support group when they were both struggling to get pregnant.

Eleanor decided to put out an appeal to

parents in the Canada Water Cool Babies Facebook group asking if anyone could take Isabel and Chloe in, as the youngster needed to travel to London for six rounds

of chemotherapy at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

They were overwhelmed by the response after Susan Geary, whose

friends coincidentally worked for the charity running the orphanage in Kenya, offered them a spare room in her family home in Rotherhithe.

The rest of the community also rallied together to donate things Chloe might need such as a cot, steriliser and clothes.

“Our faith is really important to us and we really feel if you are able to provide practical support as well as everything else it’s a great position to be in,” said Susan, who goes to City Hope Church in Bermondsey.

“Our three children have been absolutely fantastic about it and they love Chloe.

“It’s been a real blessing to have them in our house and we are absolutely thrilled the treatment has gone so well.”

After four months in Rotherhithe and six rounds of chemotherapy, Isabel finally got the news on July 31 that the treatment had been a success and Chloe’s tumour was benign.

“She recovered very quickly from the tumour and she is now back to being herself,” said Isabel.

“She is talking a lot, climbing, laughing, and dancing – she is full of beans and you only have to poke her in the tummy and she laughs.

“I’ve been so amazed and touched by Susan’s and her family’s kindness and the whole community has just been amazing.”

SOUTHWARK POLITICIANS have called on the government to provide funding for extra police officers to tackle knife crime and violence in the borough.

Over the last few months the News has reported on a growing number of young lives tragically cut short and families torn apart by the knife crime plaguing the borough.

As recently as Sunday afternoon, two males were found with stab wounds and another with a head injury in Belfort Road, Nunhead.

Earlier this month on August 1 Sidique Kamara, 23, died after he was found with stab wounds along with two other males in Warham Street, Camberwell – the same street where seventeen-year-old Rhyhiem Barton died after being shot on May 5.

Teenager Latwaan Griffiths, aged eighteen, was found with fatal knife wounds just a week earlier in nearby Denmark Road, Camberwell, on July 25 and Katrina Makunova – just seventeen years of age – was stabbed to death on July 12 in Brisbane Street, Camberwell.

Southwark Liberal Democrats called on the Labour administration to consider buying extra police officers through the Met Patrol Plus scheme at a meeting on July 25 – and the two parties have now joined forces in an attempt to bring an end to the bloodshed.

Although the council has not yet committed to buying more officers through the scheme, cabinet member for community safety and public health Councillor Evelyn Akoto said “nothing is off the cards”.

Cllr Akoto and deputy council leader Cllr Rebecca Lury have written to the

Home Office, calling for additional funding to be given to the Metropolitan Police to increase officer numbers.

They have also invited minister for crime, safeguarding and vulnerability, Victoria Atkins MP, to meet politicians and community groups in Southwark, to see what the government can do to tackle the issue of knife crime and violence.

Speaking to the News, Cllr Akoto said: “We already have three schemes with the Met Patrol Plus scheme, so it’s not something new to us and I’m speaking to the borough commander about how we look at more police in Southwark going forward.

“I live in Southwark very close to the Brandon Estate, so everything that happens affects me and my own children, but we have to be realistic – it’s the government that should be pulling their socks up and doing something.”

Cllr Akoto said she planned to set up a cross-party youth violence committee to address the issue.

“We have to keep on pushing – we can’t hold up our hands and say ‘well we tried and it’s not working’, it has to be a constant pressure on the government,”

she added. “We need the Lib Dems to work with us and go to the government to keep the pressure on them.

“Policing is only one part of the solution – it’s a multi-faceted issue and we have to look at a long-term solution.”

Acting Southwark Liberal Democrat leader Cllr David Noakes said he understood his party’s suggestion of buying more officers through the Met Patrol Plus scheme was just one option and not a solution to the problem.

“We recognise the police are stretched and for that very reason we are suggesting we recruit more police under the scheme,” he said.

“We’ve refined the idea and maybe it could be a multi-agency violent crime unit such as the Glasgow model of a public health approach.

“We applaud what’s being done already, but we think more needs to be done.

“On the night we were discussing the issue someone from my ward – Latwaan Griffiths – was killed and the following week another man was killed.

“We said in our speech that on an issue like this people expect us to work together.”

Herne Hill. Herne Hill holds special memories for Joanna, as a place where she lived for many years, in the Poet's Corner area near Brixton. She said: “I’m looking forward to talking about my son and the issues he was so passionate about in the place where I’ve called ‘home’.” She added: "I’m really looking forward to hearing my son’s poetry being read on my ‘home turf’ so-to-speak.

The event is free to attend, and all proceeds from the sale of a cocktail Alexander enjoyed will be donated to The Alexander Paul Organisation, which aims to help other young people express themselves through creativity.

Tribute event for tragic young poet tonight

THE MOTHER of an acclaimed Crystal Palace poet and political activist who tragically died of brain cancer aged just 21 is giving a special reading of his work this month.

Alexander Paul was a poet and spoken word performer who won plaudits after being invited to speak at the Conservative Party Conference in 2014, where he was given a standing ovation after introducing the then Home Secretary, Theresa May. He told assembled politicians that more than 20 stop and searches within five years had left him 'vilified, exploited and angry', and was widely credited in helping persuade the government to reform how the controversial practice was used by police. Labour factions ‘come to blows’ at pub quiz

A MOMENTUM activist allegedly ‘physically assaulted’ another Labour party member at a Walworth pub quiz last month, as it is revealed the left-wing group has failed to take control of Neil Coyle’s constituency.

As the News previously reported, Camberwell and Peckham Labour has swung to the left, with all executive party positions held by Momentum members, leading to speculation that Harriet Harman MP could face deselection in 2022's general election.

Meanwhile, over the border in Lambeth, Vauxhall Labour and its Momentum branch passed a motion of no confidence in stalwart MP Kate Hoey, calling on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and the whip to sack her and ban her from standing for the seat again.

But Coyle’s Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency is still holding out – and Coyle, who has previously vowed he won’t be silenced by bullies or online trolls, isn’t not holding back either.

In a lengthy blog post on Labour news site Labour List, Coyle said there were 'two faces' of Momentum – one which has energised grassroots and activism and another which included bullying and intimidation.

“In a recent incident in my own constituency, a Momentum member physically assaulted another Labour member at a CLP social,” he claimed.

“The vast majority of Labour members are appalled at such behaviour, as I’m sure are the majority of Momentum members.

“We all recognise this behaviour taints our whole movement and must not go unchecked.”

The alleged assault took place at a fundraising pub quiz at Beehive on Walworth’s Carter Street last month, and although police were called to the scene, no one was charged.

In a statement to the News, a spokesperson for the group claimed “None of us witnessed the incident.

The News understands that at the recent AGM of the Bermondsey and Old Southwark Labour party, Momentum failed to gain a majority of positions on the constituency party’s executive committee.

Momentum claims to have increased its representation on the General Committee to almost 40%, believed to triple last year’s result, but doubts have been cast on this figure by other sources.

A Southwark Momentum spokesperson told the News: "We're pleased with our much increased representation on the governing committees of the CLP. “This shows that Jeremy Corbyn's message is increasingly getting through in Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

“We encourage all socialists in the area to get involved and join the Labour Party."

Woman charged over ‘baby threat’

A BRANDON Estate charity that helps teenagers make ‘clean’ music says that youth violence has escalated since it was forced to leave its HQ. Mercy Mission International mentors young people living on the Camberwell estate and helps them learn music skills including recording and producing, with non-violent lyrics only.

Pastor Julian Khan says the charity has worked in the area for nearly seven years, but in December was forced to move out of its Maddock Way base to a temporary home on Hillingdon Street - where they have less space and are unable to use all their equipment.

The Pastor’s project were informally renting an office with another charity, but after its partner’s lease with landlord Southwark Council came to an end, it emerged that the building needed tens of thousands of pounds of maintenance work and would be closed for the foreseeable future. The council says the charity has been offered new premises, but has rejected them.

“Since we stopped there have been lots of violent crimes around the area. Lots of people have been stabbed – sometimes on a daily basis,” he said. “These are kids that used to come down into the centre. I know them very well. I know their parents and I used to counsel them – but now we do not have the facilities anymore. We do music, drama, and had a studio where they could make clean music that tells a positive story.”

According to Pastor Khan, usually around 25 young people would turn up – but this could rise to anywhere from fifty to one hundred kids.

Police are particularly concerned about drill music, a type of aggressive rap believed to be partly behind the rise in stabbings across London.

As the News reported last week, police say rival rap groups are challenging each other with explicit lyrics.

The Brandon Estate has been hit particularly hard by tragedy.

A WOMAN from Peckham has been charged after a mother and baby were ‘threatened’ on the tube.

Barton died on Sunday, May 5, after being found shot on Warham Street.

And on Wednesday August 1, a man was knifed to death and two others injured in a triple stabbing on the very same street.

Pastor Khan says his specialist equipment needs a safe, permanent location, but the charity is unable to stump up for expensive rents elsewhere in Camberwell.

When contacted by the News, Cllr Victoria Mills, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for finance, performance and Brexit, said: “The property was rented to an entirely different organisation who chose to break their contract in March this year and the council wasn’t even aware of the Mission’s use of the building until the building was closed.

“Unfortunately the building’s heating system has significant problems that will cost the council thousands of pounds to replace, which is why we are not looking to rent it back out to anyone for the moment while we review the situation and look at what we can do in the future.

“We recognise the importance of offering community activities, especially for young people, so the council, with local charities, runs a great programme out of the nearby Brandon Youth Centre.

“In light of recent incidents we have also commissioned local charity iiChild to run extra activities for local young people for the rest of the summer holidays.”

But Pastor Khan is still holding out hope: “Maddock Way was the perfect place.

“If we’re unable to move back in or find a suitable new home I do think it would undermine everything we have ever done with the young people here, and send all our efforts down the drain.”

According to the British Transport Police, she was charged in connection with an incident on a Central Line train travelling between Bank and St Paul’s on Wednesday, July 18, when a mother and baby were believed to have been threatened.

She will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 28.

Police hunt man who tried to grab schoolboy and exposed himself

DETECTIVES ARE hunting for a man who tried to grab a teenage boy walking home from school in Peckham before exposing himself.

The victim, a thirteen-year-old boy, had left school and was walking down Colegrove Road at about 3.40pm on Thursday, July 19, when he noticed a man

cross onto the same side of the road as him.

The man followed the victim and attempted to grab the collar of his school uniform further down the road.

The victim ran off and the suspect began to chase him, before giving up and shouting in a language the teenager did not recognise.

The victim kept running and ran along Glengall Road but, when he approached the junction with Bird in Bush Road, the

suspect ran around the corner towards him.

The suspect then stopped and exposed himself.

The victim ran to a nearby house for help, and the suspect fled in the direction of Bird in Bush Road.

Officers attended and searched the area but the suspect was not found.

The suspect is described as being Southeast Asian in appearance, possibly Chinese, about 40 years old, of strong

build, about 5ft8ins, with short grey hair.

He was wearing a blue polo T-shirt, light blue jeans, and he was holding a brown briefcase.

Detectives from Southwark CID are investigating and are appealing for information and witnesses.

Detective Constable Alison Hall, the investigating officer from Southwark CID, said: “The victim was understandably left very shocked and distressed by this incident.

Officers say the girl was sitting with her friend on the single-decker 358 bus after boarding at Croydon Road in Bromley, when a man got on at

Annerley Station and sat next to the victim and made 'inappropriate comments.'

Police say he then refused to move to let the two females out of their seats, and sexually assaulted the victim as she attempted to move past him.

Jailed for indecently touching himself in front of three women on trains A MAN who indecently touched himself in front of three woman on two separate occasions has been jailed.

Wayne Randolfi, of Newby Street, Clapham, admitted two counts of outraging public decency at Blackfriars Crown Court and was sentenced to nine months in prison on Monday, August 6.

Less than a month later, on December 7, a woman and her friend boarded a train at London Bridge station and took a seat in the carriage.

Randolfi approached them and sat diagonally opposite. He then began touching himself in full sight.

Both women reported Randolfi and provided descriptions. He was identified from CCTV by British

Transport Police and arrested.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Andrew Parkinson said: “I would like to thank the two women who reported these incidents and supported the prosecution process which enabled police to bring Randolfi to justice.

“Both were sickened by his actions and made to feel scared and vulnerable.

“By reporting these incidents in a timely manner the women enabled police to gather the supporting CCTV evidence and identify Randolfi.

“His sentence should send out a strong deterrent that such behaviour will not be tolerated on the public transport network and shows the importance of members of the public reporting such incidents.

“Tackling all forms of unwanted sexual behaviour on public transport is a priority for us. British Transport Police take every report of unwanted sexual behaviour on the rail network seriously.

“I would urge anyone who has been a victim to report it to us so we can fully investigate.”

THE ANNUAL five-day Illuminate Rotherhithe festival is coming back in November, building up to the Mayflower 400 celebrations.

This year’s festival will kick off with a lantern procession involving schools, youth groups and community centres situated between Tower Bridge and Rotherhithe.

Even though the 400 year anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower is still two years away, the commemorations began last year and continue this November.

On Thanksgiving 22 November this year, the procession will arrive at King’s Stairs gardens, off Jamaica Road, where the exterior of St Peter’s and the Guardian Angels church will be illuminated by drawings of children from local schools inspired

by Rudyard Kipling’s poem “The River’s Tale”.

The free five-day festival will also see Rotherhithe's first home-grown opera

will feature speeches from local people talking about Plymouth's "Pilgrim" colony and migration.

There will also be a presentation by Stave Hill Ecological Park and the Young Farmers on how the Pilgrims grew food, as well as music and merriment with artist Tricity Vogue acting as Mayflower colonist John Alden’s wife Priscilla Mullins, and much more.

During the six weeks before the start of the festival there will be a series of free lantern making workshops led by local artist and theatre designer Cathy Wren and makers from the Rotherhithe Shed.

A food project has also been organised with the locals since March, and will continue until November.

In September there will also be two artefacts and mudlark find exhibitions in association with the Cuming Museum at the Rotherhithe Picture Research Library.

From 15 October, ceilidh and barn dance band, The Ceilidh Tree, will conduct free workshops for a week with local schools. It will culminate in a grand ceilidh at the Bacon’s College on 9 November.

A performance by the Citizens of the World Choir, who will be singing songs of migration, is scheduled for 23 November.

And on 24th November a family ceilidh will take place at the Mayflower Hall on Neptune Street, as well as a free production of Rotherhithe's first home-grown comic opera "Lo Spedale".

NEW TEXAN TEA PARTY DELIGHTS PENSIONERS

MORE THAN one hundred OAPs have attended Southwark Pensioners' first ever Texan Tea Party, held this month at Elephant and Castle.

The event saw senior citizens line dancing - with former Mayor and Southwark councillor Charlie Smith wowing the crowd with his toe-tapping skills, with music from DJ David Murray.

The party, held at Elephant Park, is the latest to be held by Southwark Pensioners' Centre.

The charity helps older people across the borough to continue to lead happy and

fulfilling lives, whatever their age.

Its director, Cathy Deplessis, says last year the organisation gave support to nearly one thousand people over the age of fifty - as well as their families and carers.

Recent projects include setting up a men's group, raising awareness of dementia, and advising people on how to save money on utility bills.

She told the News: "The party brought members, guests and service users together for a fantastic time in the fabulous new Elephant park.

“Trying new things and making new friends helps older people stay active and connected with their communities, improving their health and well-being."

There will also be a of film screening of contemporary artist Ai WeiWei's film on migration "Human Flow" and "The Pilgrims" on 25 November, at the Rotherhithe Sands Films Studios.

The festival has been organised every year, as part of the Mayflower 400 celebrations, which will commemorate the sailing of the Mayflower to the New World in 1620.

The themes of migration and local history will feature throughout the festival, which is being held from 2226 November.

National community volunteering charity, The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), who are in charge of the site’s management, said that the move was necessary in order to try and combat problems they have been having with fishing and antisocial behaviour near to the reserve in recent months.

Fishing in the area had been prohibited by the council due to it being a natural area, but it has not stopped the fishermen.

The main issues were the effect on the nature reserve and wildlife, hooks, lines and other debris left around that were posing hazards to ducks and other waterfowl.

There were also issues surrounding security and safety of the site and surrounding area, as there was a tendency for other people to come along with fishermen and commit vandalism.

Michael Turner, project officer for TCV, said: “In the last couple of weeks, we did have an incident when a large number of people came down to fish and to frighten away water birds (which are protected whilst nesting) leading to a mother Tufted Duck being frightened away from her nine ducklings (that were only a few days old) who subsequently died due to predation.”

From an environmental standpoint, the pond cannot sustain carp in the current numbers and sizes, as they eat a lot of the vegetation and other wildlife and affects the water quality with their waste.

The Southwark Council, who owns the reserve, were informed of the issues by the ecology officer and they were looking into a solution together with TCV. Turner further added: “This will have a positive outcome for the reserve, as it will improve the pond as a habitat and help increase biodiversity, and by preventing disturbance of the pond, we will hope to see an increase in nesting ducks and reed warblers.”

TALENTED YOUNG dancers from Dulwich have been selected by the English Youth Ballet (EYB), for a professional production of Swan Lake.

Ten-year-old Flora Lambrette, from South London Dance School and thirteen-year-old Libby Talbot, from the Dulwich Ballet School, participated in EYB’s February auditions at the New Wimbledon Theatre, along with 300 hopeful dancers.

One hundred of the finest dancers, aged eight to eighteen years from London and South-East England. were selected for the performance. The lucky dancers were informed they had been accepted on the day of the audition itself.

The performance, scheduled for 2425 August, will mark the twentieth anniversary of the ballet company.

Director and founder of EYB, Janet Lewis, said: “EYB is all about providing extra performance experience to young dancers. We saw a very pleasing standard at the audition today and it was lovely to see lots of enthusiasm.”

A ten-day rehearsal for the performance has will take place in August at the Ursuline High School in Wimbledon. At the end of each rehearsal day the whole cast will come together to see the production taking shape like a jigsaw.

Flora has been learning to dance for seven years, and is elated to be a part of a real production. Speaking to the News, she said: “I am thrilled! I have been looking forward to starting the rehearsals, to make new friends and

learn a lot!”

She said she has received a lot of support from her teachers and friends, and expects a lot of them to come and see her perform.

Invention could make brushing your teeth a fun filled experience

IN A bid to stop children having rotten teeth pulled out, one ten-yearold Kennington girl came up with 'Brushing Explosion' in a bid to make brush time a fun-filled experience.

Giselle won the national competition hosted by the Aquafresh Inventors Academy.

With an alarming 170 operations a day in the UK to remove rotten teeth in children, the organisers wanted to involve the children themselves in making alternative creations.

Giselle’s “Brushing Explosions” winning invention comprises of a ‘Create Your Own’ toothbrush with a number of elements that children can change around to make brush time something that they look forward to every day.

Giselle clinched the title by scoring highly for innovation, creativity, quality and on the effectiveness of her idea.

Judge and Chief Inventor at Little Inventors, Dominic Wilcox, said: “Giselle’s winning invention really stood out for me, I scored ‘Brushing Explosions’ top marks for both innovation and creativity and it’s been a great experience bringing it to life over

the past few weeks.

“It was such an honour to look through all of the inventions for the Aquafresh Inventors Academy – there were so many great inventions, it was difficult to pick a single winner.”

As well as seeing her creation come to life, Giselle won her class a sleepover at the Science Museum and her school, the Archbishop Sumner Primary School in Lambeth, £1,000 worth of school equipment.

Giselle said she was “extremely delighted to win” and she “worked extremely hard” on creating the standout invention to make brush time more fun for herself and her peers.

“I can’t believe that I have won the Aquafresh Inventors Academy competition 2018 – I love inventing and designing and want to be an architect when I am older so this has really given me the confidence to pursue my dreams”, she said.

Emma Pittendreigh, from Aquafresh, commented: “There is a shortage of technical skills and experience in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), especially in young girls, and to see so many creative inventions come in has been truly inspiring. We whittled down almost 400 entries to find our winner and it was such a difficult decision.”

STUDENTS AT Walworth’s Michael Faraday School were declared national winners for their contributions to the Barnet News Club Hub, at The Queen’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace.

The Portland Street school's pupils were highly praised for having an open mind and healthy scepticism, promoting healthy debate, when interacting with news. The club set high standards with their exceptional Final Pieces which were well prepared and creative.

Year 6 pupil Leanne Sison (pictured) also won an individual award for her overall contribution to the Hub throughout the year.

Sir Evelyn de Rothschild presented the BNC Award to Michael Faraday School.

Highlighting their adherence to discipline, the school commented: “Each week Year 6 class teacher Leanne Evans helps to train a group of Year 5 and Year 6 students with their journalism skills.

The school follows a learning programme put in place by the Burnet News Club.”

Online video, audio and written submissions are shared on the BNC website, where a team of professional journalists provide feedback on them.

The school had previously won an award as “Thought Leader” when the BNC looked at ways to handle UK’s social housing crisis.

The Burnet News Club is a charity set up by The Economist to tackle inequality by giving young people the skills to think for themselves about current affairs.

This year’s competition saw 70 schools participating from all over the nation.

FOODBANK DOUBLES ITS NUMBERS WITH THE KIDS OFF SCHOOL

LAST MONTH, Southwark Food Bank announced an urgent call for donations, following an ‘unexpected doubling’ in client numbers, which has prompted action from local residents.

Peckham’s Pecan foodbank’s executive director Chris Price explained that for many families, the summer holidays are a period of real financial difficulty.

“While the schools are not there, there is not enough provision for food and they just do not have the money to feed their children adequately during the school holidays.”

This is often due to the unavailability of free school meals for children on low incomes, which are worth on average about £10 every week per child.

The Trussell Trust, an anti-poverty charity that runs a network of over 420 food banks across the UK, has issued warnings that food bank use spikes each summer.

Their data has showed that 4,412 more three day emergency food supplies were given to children in July and August 2016 than in the previous two months.

The Ledbury Action Group, a collection of campaigners from the Ledbury Estate in Peckham, have established an online fundraiser for the Pecan Food Bank. At the time of writing, they have raised £460 of their £1,000 target.

Danielle Gregory, spokesperson for Ledbury Action Group, told the News: “We wanted to help Southwark Food Bank after reading of their urgent callout for donations on Twitter. Just before the school summer holidays began, the food bank explained that they’d seen a dramatic increase in users, with their client numbers doubling.

“Statistics show that food poverty increases during school holidays, this may partly explain the sudden increase in demand.”

“On a personal note, several years ago I had to visit the Southwark food bank myself, to feed my family.” She

added.

“They welcomed us in without judgement and supported us back onto our feet during those tough times, so it’s nice to be able to do something good in return. The idea of families going without food is saddening, but our Southwark community is amazing and I’m certain we can smash our goal of raising £1,000 for this vital charity!”

The group have stated: “We understand that many people would like to donate to the food bank, but may not be able to physically get items to them.

“This method also enables Pecan to order in items which are running low on their inventory (which may change from week to week.) It also enables Pecan to ensure that there are enough funds to cover their own costs as a charity.”

An evening of spoken word and music was organised for this week, where instead of paying for a ticket for the event, attendees were asked to bring a full bag of non-perishable food on entry, which will go to Southwark Food Bank.

Plan International UK revealed that 40 per cent of girls in UK have had to use toilet paper rolls in place of proper period products due to dire financial circumstances.

Tanya Barron, Chief Executive of Plan International UK said: “Every month girls are being forced to use makeshift period products because they’re struggling to afford them, with more than 27 per cent of girls saying they’ve used a product for longer than its intended use because they can’t afford to replace it.

“It’s disgraceful that in a developed country, girls feel they have nowhere to turn.

“Over the past year the campaign to tackle period poverty has really gained momentum, and now we will harness

that energy by developing a community of practitioners, bringing together educators, activists, academics, health professionals and more to share what works.”

The project will roll out a nationwide P-Card scheme, in seven UK locations, based on the active C-Card scheme which provides free condoms and sexual health advice to 13-24year-olds.

Partnering with homeless prevention charity Step by Step, the scheme focuses on reaching out to individuals living in areas of high deprivation and who might be homeless or in supported housing.

A survey on Peabody shows that hard-working residents are worse off due to fall in wages and cost of living

ALTHOUGH MORE Peabody social housing tenants are in work than this time last year, falling incomes and the cost of living are leaving many struggling to make ends meet.

New research compiled by the Social Market Foundation has surveyed the housing association's 111,000 residents across London to show the impact of low wages and the rising cost of living.

According to the data, more social housing tenants are in work this year than last. Unemployment was at 14% in 2017, but in the first three months of this year it had reduced to one in ten.

Around eight per cent of tenants were working on zero hours contracts with another three per cent 'self-employed' as Uber drivers and Deliveroo riders.

Peabody says disposable income has fallen by about £389 in the last year, which has left many residents making cuts in food shopping (41 per cent of those surveyed), heating (35 per cent), and thirteen per cent skipping meals to save money.

The majority - more than 70 per cent - said that they had no savings at all to fall back on, and Peabody says hundreds of residents had used food banks and taking out payday loans or resorting to unlicensed lenders.

In Southwark, tenants said nearly 40 per cent of their income went towards rent. When travel costs and rent were put together, this took up nearly 50 per cent of their income.

Peabody's chief executive Brendan Sarsfield said: "“Lowincome Londoners are working hard, doing jobs that literally keep the city running.

Southwark leading the way to end Period Poverty

THE LET’S Talk. Period. project will challenge the stigma associated with female menstruation and their new pilot scheme is being rolled out in Southwark.

The new scheme is being led by young people’s wellbeing charity Brook and girl’s charity Plan International UK .

It will provide information on all period products, including sustainable options, in an effort to educate young people about menstruation and their bodies, and to remove shame and stigma.

A report published earlier this year by

Dagenham and Lambeth.

Helen Marshall, Chief Executive of Brook (pictured), said: “Through this partnership our sustainable model will change the lives of over 3,500 young people with the provision of free period products and vital education in order to eradicate the stigma and shame surrounding menstruation.

"Additionally, the project will be able to provide a small onwards grant programme for grass roots organisations already working extremely hard to reduce period poverty at a local level.”

Let’s Talk. Period. is supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s Tampon Tax fund.

The project will run from September 2018 until March 2020.

The gardening year is moving towards harvest T

HE TEMPERATURES throughout July were exceptional and consistently high; humidity levels continued to build with the inevitable storms eventually breaking the heat – temporarily.

Rainfall has been low throughout the summer; many shrubs and trees in parks, open spaces and gardens are in a poor condition with shrivelled foliage, some are shedding leaves. Grass is parched and straw-like – but should recover once the rain returns (bare patches can be re-seeded in autumn).

Keeping plants watered has been challenging; the ground is like concrete, even after recent rain making routine gardening (planting/weeding) difficult; also water is running off making it hard to ensure plants retain sufficient moisture around the roots. One benefit of the extreme heat and lack of rain is that weeds are not prolific and slugs and snails are keeping a low profile.

With temperatures remaining high into August and borders full of seasonal perennials - it is hard to believe that growth is now past its peak; the gardening year is moving towards harvest time and there is a subtle hint of autumn in the air; light levels are not as strong.

enjoy; one of the cheeriest plants is the Sunflower (Helianthus). There are various types – giant showy annuals and compact perennials

such as H. Sungold with its bright yellow-orange flowers; a medium sized variety H. ‘Autumn Beauty’ has yellow, lemon or orange

blooms and grows to five feet. The spectacular Helianthus ‘Russian Giant’ can reach ten feet resembling a small tree; often requiring support to keep it upright.

Annual Sunflowers are easy to grow from seed (in April). The smaller perennials, bought as plants will also thrive in window boxes and containers. Annual sunflowers set seed after flowering and provide food for the birds through autumn and early winter. Other August flowers to look out for are - Passion flower (pictured), the electric blue Globe thistle (Echinops) and

delicate Scabious - beloved by the bees.

It has been an exceptional year for roses; most varieties have flowered continuously producing masses of colourful blooms over many weeks; this may be a result of a warm spring and subsequent hot weather.

To keep roses going – remove dead flowers, give a liquid feed every two weeks until September. Treat diseases (blackspot, mildew and rust) use Rose Vitaliser (www.organiccatalogue.com).

Climbing and rambling roses can be pruned (if needed) this month.

Cutting youth services leads to a rise in violence

n 1st August 23 year old Siddique Kamara was stabbed to death just yards from his home in Brandon Estate. His family are devastated. And this is the second murder in the same street within the last 3 months. Rhyheim Barton, aged only 17 years, was shot dead there on May 5th.

The Police have worked quickly to arrest and charge a man with Siddique’s murder and it is vital that anyone who has any information that can help the police with either crime should come forward. If you do not want to contact them directly you can pass information entirely anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The local community are, justifiably, shocked at this second killing. As I did after Rhyhiem’s death, the day after Siddique’s murder I held a meeting on the Brandon Estate, attended by the Southwark Council Leader, Peter John, local councillors for Camberwell Green and Newington, senior members of Southwark Police, the hardworking Brandon Estate tenants' representatives Joy Allan-Baker, June Lewis, and Eileen Piper and local residents.

At both meetings the same concerns were raised. With the recent killings, parents are worried about having to leaving their children and go to work when schools are on summer holidays. Holiday playschemes are either full or too expensive.

So it was important that Peter John immediately pledged £10,000 from Southwark Council to support the summer

It was picked up by a vigilant community concerned tenant who represents a group of tower blocks that can only be described as potentially lethal.

Last year the Council commissioned a Fire Safety Panel which was made up of Resident volunteers, serviced by Council Officers, chaired by an independent Fire Expert. I served on that Panel and when it completed its work, which was very comprehensive, the Council took it away to consider it.

That was several months ago. Where is the report now – no idea. It still hasn’t seen the light of day

and despite asking for a progress report, nothing has been forthcoming and nobody will tell us of its whereabouts.

I served on the Panel as did the other residents because it is a very serious issue and I would remind Councillor Cryan, who bears ultimate responsibility for the present fiasco, that it was tenants who died in Lakanal House and Grenfell Tower.

After all, she didn’t tell us she had got it wrong - the press and a vigilant tenant did that and only then did she confuse us with her response.

Home Affairs Select Committee to conduct an inquiry into whether the police have enough resources to deal with surveillance of the use of drill music for crime, whether internet providers are quick enough in responding to requests to take down material which is inciting crime and whether more powers are needed to stop the internet being used for gang crime. I’m also liaising with the Youth Violence Commission and am a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Knife Crime.

Government cuts both to police budgets and youth services are having a significant effect on the rise of youth violence. Southwark alone has lost a quarter of its police officers since 2010. My Labour colleagues and I are intensifying our demands to government to increase officers on the beat and to restore police and youth service funding. It is time the Government stepped up to treat this crisis with the urgency required to help stop any more young lives being lost to violence and prevent other families and communities going through this heartbreak.

Journey round the world too long

Fogg wagers everything on the journey, with Captain Fixx ready to do his best to thwart the venture.

Set in the late 19th century, it is a whirlwind jaunt around the globe yet at times I did ask, ‘Are we there yet?’

The large ensemble pieces work well and the Union never ceases to amaze when cramming a hearty crowd onto a small stage - 17 to be precise! Most notably for ‘Around the world with Katy’s Girls’ and the dreamlike ‘Luxuriant Brew.’

Captain Fixx (Robert Oliver) hams it up completely – however, his voice cut through me like a saw. Okay, he was the pantomime baddie but he personally took me to a bad space!

The relationship between Fogg (Sam Peggs) and Passepartout (Connor Hughes) is excellent - loved the train scene. Nevertheless, there are a few moments when the energy dips. Come on, guys, I’m talking about riding the elephant and ‘Sorry Dragon’ in need of a little tweaking.

Bascule Chamber music beneath the Thames

TOWER BRIDGE will once again open its bascule chambers to concert goers with a new round of performances in September, curated by composer Iain Chambers, writes Michael Holland.

Iain was born, and grew up, in a small village outside Peterborough, ‘complete with pub, pigsty and playing fields aplenty,’ he says before adding, ‘I now live in East London, where I have lived for most of my life, about two miles from Tower Bridge.’

Iain played the piano from the age of five and then gravitated into writing music, and a penchant for electronic music. ‘I also liked composers like Bartók, Shostakovich and Ravel.’

After moving to East London, Iain was still very much into music, so along with Philip Clayton Smith, formed Bow Mods and created music that ‘explored the nightlife, characters and places in the East End that we knew… ‘Our single Country Girls was picked up by Tom Robinson at BBC 6 Music.’

Not having a preferred instrument, the composer says ‘although not technically an instrument, domestic small sounds of the type that John Cage often used in his music are my

here were moments when I felt I was in a very surreal world of elephants, dragons and burlesque dancers as Phileas Fogg sets off on the adventure of a lifetime with his servant Jean Passepartout in Phil Wilmott’s adaptation of Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days, writes Susan Hallissey.

favourite’, and goes on to say, ‘I like working with the sounds of specific locations and exploring the music you can find in the everyday ambient sounds around us. In terms of experimental music, I draw on the work of composers like Cage, Christian Wolff, Beatriz Ferreyra and Howard Skempton. In terms of song-writing I would say my main influences are Julia Holter, Mark Hollis, Serafina Steer and Jim O’Rourke.'

One day he heard a recording from the London Sound Survey capturing Tower

Bridge lifting from within the bascule chamber. The chambers are the cavernous spaces that the counterweights from the road section drop into when the bridge is raised, which he likens to ‘a giant garlic press’.

From that he got an idea to ‘present this recording alongside actual brass instruments echoing and doubling the tones of the bridge.’

Since 2015, when Iain began curating concerts in the chamber, audiences have been fortunate in enjoying a reimagining of Handel's Water Music

using the live sounds of the bridge; the Ben See Group, Juice Vocal Ensemble, and clarinettist Kate Romano performing Steve Reich.

For the September concerts, he says he has lined up ‘the seven-piece Marian Consort singing brand new vocal music alongside Renaissance music; the great UK tabla player Kuljit Bhamra, and an exciting new voice poet Rae Levine’.

The composer also reveals he will ‘be making an immersive sound work to take audiences down the 100 steps from street level to the bascule chamber.’

Of the chamber itself he says, ‘I haven't yet met anyone not awestruck when they see this incredible brick-lined cathedral, hidden beneath the bridge and below the line of the River Thames. So don’t miss this unique opportunity!’

As the tale of Othello’s downfall unravels, dance scenes and slapstick audience interaction add a comedic element to the tragedy. Though these scenes are brilliantly executed, they leave one with the impression that Othello was really a rather ridiculous man, and Iago, normally loathed by the audience, is played by Rylance as a cheeky chap with quite a nasty chip on his shoulder.

The casting of the production with André Holland as Othello, Aaron Pierre as the charming Cassio and Sheila Atim in the role of Iago’s wife, normalises the mixed relationship between Othello and Desdemona, and the race dynamic of the play is celebrated far more, rather than seen as a shocking element of sixteenth century Venetian culture. This places more of the emphasis on gender roles. In previous productions Othello has frequently been portrayed as a man driven mad, thus consequently relieved of much of the blame for murdering his own wife.

Though here his fragile ego is unpacked a little more. Though Holland is confident in the role there are moments where the drama feels a little too rushed. As the bodies pile up on the death bed one can’t help feeling it’s all gotten a bit out of hand. Yet it doesn’t feel that psychological trauma is what the play was reaching for in the first place. Though Mark Rylance executes his role as the infamous Iago with clarity, he doesn’t play him quite as insidiously depraved as other productions might.

The real highlight of the play is the brilliant use of dance, classic to a Globe production. They emphasise the various scenes ranging from joviality of the group routines, to the touching gentleness of the dance performed as the dead are carried out. It is this combination of dance, song, tragedy, comedy that comprise a classic Greek tragedy that Kampen’s has clearly run with in this production. The play isn’t necessarily a tear jerker, but you will certainly leave entertained.

Othello is on at Shakespeare’s Globe until October 13th.

The Mighty Montpelier

WITH EVERYONE currently paying homage to les French I felt it the right time to pay a visit to The Montpelier, one of Peckham’s premier pubs, writes Michael Holland....

And not because France won the World Cup, but because I was told that Montpelier is French for Mighty Potato and that they do a mean plate of à la carte chips in there.

I was meeting my friend Kay there after work. She had arrived early and spent that waiting time studying the menu before I turned up. She had a smile on her face so must have seen something good amongst the choices. I smiled too when I saw they served Brixton Brewery ales on draught, and ordered a small Effra Ale. The menu was a selection of small plates and plated meals such as fish & chips or steak and fries. And this is where the ordering problem lay. Kay, who had already had 45 minutes to choose something was now in a quandary of her own making. Fish & chips or steak and fries? Fish & chips or steak and fries? She eventually sought the counsel of Mimi, our waitress patiently waiting with pencil poised over pad, before asking for more time. Then she asked Joe, the man in charge, who,

with no hint of mischief or impatience, said, after explaining what a Bavette Steak was: ’They’re both very good’. I barged in and ordered a selection of small plates and starters, and asked nicely if my dining companion could ‘Get a move before the gaff shuts!’

Quite soon after, the plates began arriving, and Kay was rather taken with the Cheese & Leek Croquettes, giving a

special commendation to the curried yogurt dip. I liked the Soy & Honey Pork Skewers with Asian Slaw because the sweetness of the marinade was soon booted out the door and trampled on by the chilli kick of that slaw. Wow! It was like putting a Skinhead in a lift with half a dozen Hare Krishnas, i.e. someone should have been warned!

On the milder side were the Scottish

Scallops (Quite delectable) and Brixham Crab on toast (No fireworks there).

While we contentedly tucked in, Joe created a drink for Kay that involved crushing fresh blackberries into real lemonade and forming something so lively it would wake drunken sailors.

My needs were much simpler: A Brixton Brewery Atlantic A.P.A. that burst with citrussy notes and had the advantage over Kay’s concoction because it had beer in it.

As we compared drinks the pièce de résistance was served: Tribute Battered Atlantic Cod and Chips with Tartare Sauce. The batter looked nice and crispy around the fish as it reclined quite majestically on top of a Jenga of big chips. And this is where the Mighty Potato came into its own because those chips were perfect. ‘Je t’aime,’ I whispered to the first one that passed my lips.

All that was left to do was try the desserts. There were a couple of very enticing offerings but once Joe explained that the home-made ice-cream is made on site and not ‘home-made’ in a factory down in Cornwall, I was in. I had the honey ice-cream, sourced from bees on the Sussex farm where the pub’s meat comes from, and Kay had very sharp blackberry, made with the same fruits as

her lemonade drink.

We liked The Montpelier. We liked its friendliness and how it felt like a local for locals. We left sated and a lot happier than when we entered straight from work like Les and Lucy Miserables.

Paving the way to the NHS

CAMBERWELL HISTORIAN Stephen Bourne’s new book War to Windrush: Black Women in Britain 1939-1948 chronicles the black doctors and nurses who helped pave the way for the founding of the NHS - long before the Windrush generation came to the UK.

Published this year to coincide with the 70th anniversaries of the National Health Service, and the arrival of the first postwar Caribbean migrants, Stephen’s research brings together the stories of black health workers as they navigated racial discrimination, male-dominated careers and achieved recognition and success.

Stephen told the News he chose this topic for his research because “most hospitals had black nurses and workers, including those in Southwark and Lambeth like Kings and Guys, but their stories hadn’t been given context – and people don’t know the backstory of these women who came over long before the NHS was founded.”

One of the earliest recorded black nurses working in London was Annie Brewster, who lived in Camberwell and worked at the London Hospital in Whitechapel.

Known as ‘Nurse Ophthalmic’, Annie is recorded as working in on its wards from 1881 to 1902, where she developed a specialism in treating patients with eye conditions, with her matron praising her ‘quick intelligence and kindness to old people’.

Another key figure is Peckham’s Christine Moody, born in 1914 as the eldest child of Dr Harold Moody, a Jamaican who had set up one of the first black-led community organisations in the UK, the League of Coloured Peoples at Queen’s Road.

Harold had come to London in 1904 to study medicine at King’s College but despite qualifying as a prize-winning doctor he was rejected for positions due to the colour of his skin and so set up his own practice in Peckham where he gained a reputation for treating sick and poor children for free, and campaigned to help victims of racism to find homes and work.

Christine followed in her father’s footsteps and after attending Mary Datchelor School in Camberwell she qualified at the Royal College of Surgeons in 1938, and joined the family’s Peckham surgery.

She became a leading figure in the United Nations World Health Organisation, working across the globe stationed in Punjab with the Royal Army Medical Corps, where she ran a hospital, and as a medic in Ghana, before eventually settling in Jamaica, where the paper trail finally goes cold.

“There may not have been an official ‘colour bar’ in London,” says Stephen, “but in effect it was difficult for non-white people to advance in their careers. But there were exceptions and it is empowering to hear those positive stories.”

at Guy’s after first coming to London for the Coronation of King George VI, in 1937.

She decided to stay In the UK and train as a midwife and nurse – a decade before the NHS was founded in 1948 – and Ademola excelled in her field.

She was also accepted by her peers – with several records on file heralding her appointment.

The British Journal of Nursing wrote: “An African Princess is now a nurse at Guy’s Hospital.

“She is Omo-Oba Adenrele Ademola, daughter of the Alake of Abeokuta, who is paramount chief of Northern Nigeria.

“The chief, who is interested in hospital services and hygiene, decided that his daughter should go through the whole of a nurse’s training at a London Hospital.

“The Princess is 22, and for the past two years has been at school in Somerset.”

The advent of the Second World War also brought new opportunities for women living in British territories overseas.

across the Empire restricted career opportunities but after the ban on black West Indian women joining armed services personnel was lifted in 1943, suddenly there was this way out of the colonies, and the opportunity for adventure.”

He also believed the war years were a more tolerant time before race relations soured.

“During the war everyone was fighting a common enemy and people felt they were in it together and there was a very strong feeling after the war that Britain would consider independence to its territories,” he says.“This wartime experience laid the ground for decolonisation in the 1950s and 1960s.”

One woman who helped the nurses from across the Empire settle into their new lives was the formidable Una Marson, a Jamaican feminist living in Camberwell’s Brunswick Square who achieved success as a journalist, playwright, poet and broadcaster.

wartime programme ‘Calling the West Indies’ on the BBC Empire Service, which would later become the seminal ‘Caribbean Voices’.

With the International Alliance of Women in London, she lobbied for black nurses to get jobs and to be treated fairly, with much of her artistic work focusing on the experience of Jamaican migrants and the difficulties of living in a white society.

Stephen, who has received an Honorary Fellowship from London South Bank University for his contribution to diversity, believes schools can do more to teach children about black historical figures, like Una, who lived and worked in the UK even before the first waves of large-scale migration.

“Black British history events such as this are important because they help to fill in the gaps that we have in the school curriculum which favours teaching our young about African American historical figures over their black British counterparts,” he says.

"We need to raise the level of

understanding and appreciation of black British, or African Caribbean, citizens from the past who, as British subjects, have helped to build this country.

“The nurses in this book played a huge part but their stories just aren’t well known.”

His book comes at a time when many people in south London have been left reeling by the treatment of the Windrush generation, and the on-going scandal over their citizenship rights.

As a result, Stephen’s publisher Jacaranda Books has committed to donating £2 from every purchase of the book towards the Windrush Fund, to help people affected.

“It is important people have a much better idea of the contributions throughout history made by black people in Britain, who often do not get the attention and credit they deserve.

“We must make sure the Windrush Scandal never happens again,” he says.

THE POWER of seemingly endless finances has long been a feature of the upper echelons of English football.

DULWICH HAMLET moved up to thirteenth in National League South after a 2-2 draw with Chelmsford City on Monday.

Dulwich made a number of changes following their 1-0 defeat to Concord Rangers last weekend, with Gavin Tomlin, Nathan Ferguson and Walter Figueira on the bench, and Ashley Carew, Nyren Clunis and Jay May starting.

Michael Chambers, Nathan Green and Tanasheh Abrahams were all still injured.

Visitors Hamlet made an excellent start, going in front in the fourth minute when May found Clunis and he beat his marker before firing past goalkeeper Ross Worner.

The hosts had their first opportunity in the fifteenth minute but Rhys Murphy failed to find the target, before the same player equalised by converting Scott Fenwick’s low cross.

Hamlet stopper Preston Edwards prevented his side from falling behind when he tipped Anthony Church’s looping header over.

Hamlet then rallied and had efforts to retake the lead but May shot wide, Ibrahim Kargbo’s attempt deflected off target and Clunis was denied by Worner at the near post.

There was controversy in stoppage time at the end of the half when Hamlet were awarded a penalty after Clunis had been brought down. City players pointed out that the assistant’s flag had gone up, apparently for offside, but after a brief discussion the referee stuck to his original

decision.

City players were furious, and after a delay Carew held his nerve to fire home from the spot.

It was Hamlet’s turn to feel aggrieved after the break when City were awarded a penalty after holding in the box, and Fenwick stepped up to beat Edwards.

There were chances for both sides to win it. Clunis and Dipo Akinyemi just failed to get touches on crosses into the box, and at the other end Fenwich hit the side-netting before Church fired over the bar.

In the 76th minute, Worner saved from Byron Lawrence, and then Edwards produced a superb stop to somehow keep out Church’s header.

This Saturday, Hamlet travel to Bath City aiming for their first away win.

Brian Clough sent shockwaves through more than just the football world by making Trevor Francis the first onemillion pound British transfer in 1979.

Nottingham Forest of course went on to win the European Cup the following two seasons with Francis scoring the famous winner in the ’79 final.

During the Premier League era, Blackburn Rovers and more recently Chelsea and Manchester City have all been accused of ‘buying’ titles.

However, the multimillionaire ownerbacked non-league club is a more recent concept.

Billericay Town are, of course, National League South’s Manchester City equivalent. The marquee signings in 2017 were ex-Brighton striker Jake Robinson and former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara. They won promotion in impressive style last season, with Robinson netting over 50 goals.

However, they are not National League South’s only big spenders. Concord Rangers pulled off a major coup in luring Billy Knott from Lincoln City. The exChelsea academy graduate won eleven England caps at youth level and played for Sunderland in the Premier League.

He also has a wealth of experience in the Football League despite being only 25.

He didn’t come cheap and he could help Concord be promotion contenders.

Hamlet already know the strength of Welling United’s new-look side, having lost 2-0 to them on the opening day.

Welling’s new manager Steve King knows the division inside-out and has acquired exceptional talent in proven goalscorer Danny Mills and former Everton prodigy JP Kissock.

This weekend, Gavin Rose’s side will have to contend with Bath City’s new goal machine John Mills. The striker netted a phenomenal 140 goals in three seasons for Hereford as they won three consecutive promotions, and another 57 the year before at Didcot Town.

Last Monday’s opponents, Chelmsford, recruited goalkeeper Ross Worner and forward Scott Fenwick, both of whom have Football League experience.

Dulwich Hamlet have added to their own squad, most notably with the acquisition of the excellent Anthony Cook. However, given their financial constraints they will have to fight tooth and nail for survival in a league where money talks.

Perhaps survival in itself should be seen as an achievement, providing the club with a solid foundation to build upon next year. Or perhaps that is being pessimistic?

Rose was correct when he said that Hamlet would have to play ten to fifteen games before setting realistic targets this season.

Dulwich’s performances have been mixed so far – but it has been a decent start. It is hard to judge their quality in comparison to the rest of the league.

Perhaps what Rose’s side has lacked most obviously so far is that most valuable of commodities – a striker with a proven killer instinct in the box.

One area where the Dulwich club do hold an advantage over their rivals, however, is their support. Hamlet fans must compensate for the yawning financial disparities with other clubs by acting as the side’s twelfth man. Their attendance figures and sheer enthusiasm set Hamlet apart from other clubs in the division, and can mean the difference in the tightest games.

Be it hunting promotion or clinging to their status in National League South, the Dulwich fanbase will play a crucial role in their team’s fortunes over the coming season.

Christopher Marlowe, the Elizabethan poet, responded to what he saw as the corrupting influence of money by writing the story of Dr Faustus, who sold his soul to the devil in return for 24 years of power. As football is increasingly dominated by big-spenders, The Rabble have the opportunity to prove that the beautiful game still has soul that cannot be bought.

DULWICH FAILED to take advantage of another superb spell

by Salaar Waqar, and fell to defeat by 74 runs in their Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 2 match at Walton on Thames last weekend.

Dulwich put their opponents in to bat on a damp pitch with erratic bounce, but despite a testing spell of six overs for fourteen runs by Kamran Munawar were unable to get an early

breakthrough.

The openers had added 55 in thirteen overs when Sam Ellison took the first wicket, removing skipper Dan Roberts for 20. Waqar joined the attack in the next over, and in a masterful display of off spin bowled his ten overs straight through to take five wickets for just fourteen runs.

Slow left-armer Patrick George gave him good support at the other end in a spell of 1-13 off five overs. The spinners had reduced the league leaders from 66-1 in the sixteenth over to 94-7 in the 32nd. But after Waqar had completed his spell George and Alex Gledhill were unable to impose the same restraint.

watched the carnage from the other end, and was now joined by veteran Mark Bainbridge. The pair launched a counter attack, adding 33 together in 8.5 overs before George dismissed Mann for 27.

Bainbridge continued the assault in company with Ben Monk. They added 38 in 8.4 overs before Ellison returned to dismiss Bainbridge, who had scored 46, the top score of the innings, off 57 balls. Munawar bowled the last man for a golden duck in the next over to dismiss Walton for 167. The last three wickets had added 73 runs in eighteen overs.

Waqar only lasted seven balls, becoming the fourth wicket, and the third to fall with the score on 50. Ellison joined Matt Marfani in a stand of 25 for the fifth wicket. But there was to be no repeat of the tail-end heroics of the first

innings. Slow left-armer Bainbridge and off-spinner Eben Botha dismantled the rest of the batting, taking three wickets apiece as the batsmen picked out the fielders.

Dulwich lost their last six wickets for eighteen runs in 11.3 overs, to be all out for 93.

With the two teams below them also losing Dulwich remain in eighth place, seven points above Old Whitgiftians and eleven above Oxted & Limpsfield.

Those two teams play each other this weekend, while Dulwich have a home match against Sanderstead, who are safely positioned in the middle of the table.

Dulwich will need to win to maintain their current position in the table.

“The ball acts differently on artificial surfaces than on grass but the pitch at Princes Park is fantastic. So, if we want to play that ball on the deck, we are going to get a good roll on the surface and we are going to be able to move the ball around. That’s what we want to do.”

FISHER ARE out of the 201819 FA Cup after losing in the extra preliminary round to Horsham YMCA at St Paul’s last Saturday.

After the game was scoreless at the break, Dean Harrison’s side scored a superb goal to go ahead, breaking the length of the pitch before leftback Jack Rogers crossed for Sam Pekun to fire home.

Fisher appeared to be on their way into the preliminary round, one stage away from the first-round proper, but were stunned when Tony Nwachukwu equalised with twelve minutes left and then Dean Bown finished from close range late on to pinch the win for the visitors.

Fisher are back in SCEFL Premier Division action this Saturday. The Rotherhithe outfit travel to Crowborough Athletic looking for their second win of the season.

That’s according to new first-team manager Chris Phillips (inset right), after the announcement last week that they will be playing their home fixtures at Dartford’s Princes Park this season.

The Lionesses will be leaving behind their artificial 4G pitch at St Paul’s Sports Ground to play at a stadium that boasts a grass pitch and a capacity of 4,100. They will play their first game at their new home against Lewes FC Women on September 9.

The move to Princes Park also brings a new sporting partnership with Places Leisure in Dartford for the Lionesses.

The partnership will see first teamplayers granted free access to Fairfield Leisure Centre facilities to carry out their strength and conditioning programmes.

Lionesses director of football Pedro Martinez Losa (main photo) explained the reasons for the move in a club statement.

He said: “We aim to become the best club in London for providing sport and education to girls and women. That desire to be the best extends to developing young players and producing England players by giving them the opportunity to play for the first team.

“In order to complete these objectives, we think we need to provide our players and our fans with the best match experience possible, including easy access to parking, dressing room facilities and importantly the highest possible standards in terms of a playing surface where our players can produce

Peckham fighter aims to take over division REGIONAL MIDDLEWEIGHT champion Olamide Dedegbe from Peckham has plans to conquer the division after the Quest Knockout Tournament.

The tournament will be staged at the Epsom Downs Racecourse on Saturday, September 8, and Dedegbe will be joined by eight other middleweights in the competition.

Dedegbe, who won his title by beating Gavin Lissenden in February at the Troxy in London, is excited by the prospect of competing three times in one night.

“It’s definitely something new but I think it will suit me because I’ve always backed my fitness levels, so fighting three times in a night isn’t a problem,” Dedegbe said.

“The only adjustment I’ll have to make is probably the stop-and-start nature of having one fight, and then

having to wait around for the second one or third one potentially. But I’m looking forward to it and I think it will suit my style.

“You have to take each fight as it comes. You can’t really take your time in any fight because it’s a short fight, you have to be super busy and look for the stoppage early.

“There’s no gamble to take there, you can’t go in there with a game plan saying, ‘I’m going to wait’, or try and do this or that. You just have to go for it.”

Dedegbe will meet Jordan Tucker in the first round of the competition.

Tucker has come down from lightcruiserweight for the tournament.

“To be honest, I don’t know anything about Jordan. I haven’t seen him in the league before but what I can expect is a tough fight,” Dedegbe said.

“Everyone in this competition is a

quality fighter so I’m expecting somebody who is well-schooled and coming in with the intention to win, bringing their A game. So I’m prepared for that.

“I’m taking each fight as it comes, I’m not looking to call anyone out.”

Dedegbe believes if he wins the tournament he will be the best middleweight within the Queensbury Boxing League, and he has targeted future title fights further down the line.

“If I win this tournament I will have beaten the current and former National champion, and also a former British champion, so I would say I’m the best middleweight in the league.

“I’d love to get the National and British title outside of the tournament, but again I’m not targeting any names, just titles and belts is what I’m looking for.”

SHAUN WILLIAMS came to the rescue of a Millwall fan desperate for a ticket to watch last Saturday’s game against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Rob Kemp, who is based in Scotland, posted on Twitter on Friday night and again on Saturday morning that he was looking for a ticket, but was having no luck despite plenty of retweets until Williams noticed his plea.

The Republic of Ireland international replied to the fan promising, “I’ll get you one mate” and a Lion emoji.

That prompted an outpouring of praise for Williams, and a few hours later Kemp posted a photo on Twitter from Ewood Park with the message: “Home with a hard earned point! Shout out to the Millwall family and of course @shaunywilliams6 for making it possible.”

It looked like it was going to be a lot better for the visiting fans after the opening 40 minutes in Lancashire during which George Saville and Steve Morison smacked shots off the woodwork, and Jed Wallace fired just wide.

But after the break they needed Jordan Archer to come to their rescue as newly-promoted Blackburn breached their defence twice through Danny Graham, the Lions goalkeeper saving both one-on-ones.

Archer was also at full-stretch to keep out Bradley Dack’s direct free-kick.

Millwall, not at their best, held on and have one more point than at the same stage last season.

SHANE FERGUSON isn’t ruling out a loan move away from Millwall this summer.

Ferguson, 27, made his first league appearance of the season when he came on as an 89th-minute substitute at Blackburn last Saturday.

The Northern Ireland international, who joined Millwall three years ago, struggled for game time last season as the Lions went seventeen games unbeaten from January to April with a settled squad.

Ferguson is in the same boat as Ben Thompson and Dave Martin, with all three likely to want first-team football this season.

Ferguson admits he isn’t one to go banging on doors, and understands boss Neil Harris’ position.

“I worked hard in pre-season. Last season was difficult because the lads went on an amazing run,” Ferguson said.

“I had an injury at the time and then it’s hard to get back in. That’s totally understandable. You’ve got to be there for your team-mates and try to help them as much as you can even if you’re not in the squad.

“It is difficult but the manager has been great with me. Whenever I haven’t been in the squad we’ve had one-on-one meetings and he keeps my confidence up.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what happens over the next few weeks and the season.

“Some people might want to go banging on the manager’s door and ask, ‘why am I not playing?’ I’m not like that.

I want to just get on with training and bide my time. I’m not one to cause havoc around the training ground or anything like that.

“I keep my head down and get on with my work and whenever I’m called upon I’ll be ready.

“The lads who are playing want people putting pressure on them, you always want to try to raise your standards higher and higher.

“The lads who have been in the starting

XI have been fantastic, you can’t really complain. It’s been great to watch and long may it continue.

“But at the end of last season it was difficult. I spoke to the manager and we’re going to see what happens over the next few weeks. We don’t know what’s happening in terms of players maybe coming in, so it’s hard to give an answer at the moment.”

Other Millwall players have been linked with moves away, but the club rejected bids for Jake Cooper, George Saville and Jed Wallace.

Millwall didn’t spend any money on transfers in Ferguson’s first season at the club, and the winger believes it’s a sign of far they have come that the hierarchy are now receiving multi-million pound offers for players.

“It shows how well the manager has done here, and George is now playing international football as well,” Ferguson said.

“The size of the bids was unheard of when I first came here and it shows how well the lads have done. Hopefully we can keep a hold of them for a while yet.

“We did really great last year and we

want to kick on again. Last year we were going into games thinking, ‘should we be here?’ But the lads showed how good they were and we knew we had every right to be in this league.

“We were so unlucky not to make the play-offs but the confidence is high and we all know what we can do in this league and what our strengths are. A lot of people don’t like playing us.

“There was a meeting at the start of preseason looking back at last season and talking about trying to reach the same goals again. We obviously know it’s going to be difficult to do as well as we did but we worked really hard in preseason and we think we can achieve those goals again.

“We like being underdogs, I think we play better whenever we are. We were unbelievable against Middlesbrough for 85 minutes, they couldn’t handle us. We look forward to playing those bigger teams.

“We have to set high standards. We think we can do better than last season. A lot of clubs have spent a lot of money but our togetherness is probably the best in the league and that showed last season.”

Byron Webster wore the Lions captain’s armband on his first appearance since September 30, 2017, produced a superb block in his box late on and then placed a penalty into the bottom corner to put his side in control in the shootout.

It was put to Millwall boss Neil Harris afterwards that Webster seemed a surprising option to be one of the five takers and he responded: “To you maybe, not to me.”

Apparently Webster is clinical from the spot when players practise in training, and on Tuesday night he confidently dispatched his kick.

Webster’s penalty put Millwall 21 up, after Tomas Holy had saved Jed Wallace’s effort and then Ben Amos, who was making his

Millwall debut, dived low to his left to deny Mark Byrne.

Shooting into the away end, Tom Elliott gave Millwall the lead before Luke O’Neill levelled.

Josh Parker blasted his effort over and Shane Ferguson gave Millwall a 3-1 cushion by planting an excellent spot-kick into the bottom right corner. That meant Brandon Hanlan had to score, but Amos made a superb save, tipping the ball at full stretch onto the post (above) and watching as it rebounded across the goal.

Harris had made ten changes from the 0-0 draw against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend, Elliott one of them and the striker had a real mixed bag of an evening as at times he looked unplayable and on occasions he took the wrong option.

He got stick from some home fans, but Elliott never hid, never stopped leading the line as Millwall tried to win it in normal time.

Harris was also asked about the fans’ reaction to Elliott and he admitted that maybe the striker didn’t quite get the service he needed.

Elliott also showed real bottle by stepping up to take a penalty, getting Millwall off the mark.

He had some chances during the

90 minutes, but nothing clear-cut.

There was some good link-up play between him and Fred Onyedinma, another player currently struggling to win over the crowd.

Gillingham couldn’t deal with the 21-year-old forward on occasions, but the challenge for Onyedinma is to produce it more consistently in games.

There were other players with points to prove. Ben Thompson was excellent in the first half, Millwall’s best player on the ball, but he could still depart on loan this month and Harris will not stand in his way if he decides he wants to leave.

Likewise with Ferguson.

Harris said afterwards some players hadn’t taken their chances.

His side didn’t take the chances to win it in normal time, the closest they came when Ferguson hooked the ball over Holy towards the far corner, but the goalkeeper and Bradley Garmston somehow combined to divert the ball off the line.

Gillingham grew in confidence in the second half, Tom Eaves, Brandon Hanlon and Regan Charles-Cook all sending shots skimming just past Amos’ righthand post.

Harris will recall his main players for this weekend’s clash with Derby County, and meanwhile Lions fans can look forward to a potentially lucrative second-round draw.

“From the Bochum friendly I picked the same team for three games and they’ve done really well,” Harris said.

“There was an option to use the squad, to give them game time and a chance to impress. You do need to make sure everyone is fresh and ready to go.

“I made the changes because I wanted to see my players perform and give them game time, but I also wanted to make sure some players are rested for the weekend. It’s early in the season to play three games in a week.

“I feel we’ve got a good squad of players, we do want to add to it.

There were some strong performances but some weren’t at the races.

“There will be feedback to the players. It gives me food for thought, why some were at it and some not quite at it.”

JED WALLACE has a message for Millwall fans who would like to see the club splash out on new signings: Be careful what you wish for.

Millwall have been one of the Championship’s lowest spenders in the summer transfer market as they continue to slowly build their squad, their £800,000 29-year-old record transfer fee paid remaining intact.

But Wallace has witnessed close up what can happen to a club that overspends.

He made his debut for Portsmouth in League One in the 2012-13 season which ended in relegation to League two.

Just three years previously, the club had been in the Premier League and reached the final of the FA Cup. Three points deductions linked to entering financial administration later, they had plummeted to the fourth tier and had almost gone out of business.

They had spent far beyond their means in their time in the top flight, paying huge wages to players such as Sol Campbell, who reportedly earned £90,000 a week.

There are echoes of those kinds of financial problems in the current Championship, with Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City under transfer embargoes as they try to balance the books, and Aston Villa struggling to fall under Financial Fair Play spending thresholds earlier this summer.

“It’s mental. When I moved [to Wolves] from League Two I had a buyout clause of about 300 grand,” Wallace told the News. “Some of the boys in League Two now are moving for £1.5million.

“It starts from the top, Neymar going for £200million, and it’s relentless now. Premier League to Premier League, no matter what age you are, every transfer seems to be a minimum £10million.

“Championship to Premier League transfers are regularly £10-15million.

I remember Philippe Coutinho going to Liverpool from Inter Milan for £11million.

“The fan inside me is excited to see what’s happening.

“You can want us to spend millions, but then you can come and watch us in League Two in administration in five years. I’ve been there before, I’ve seen it first-hand at Portsmouth. You might have a good six months but ultimately you end up in League Two and fans will be trying to buy the club because it’ll have no money.

“I just missed the last big wave of it at Portsmouth in terms of the big wages being paid to the likes of Sol Campbell.

“When I was there, there were players like Tal Ben Haim getting paid a lot of money. At the time I was on about 300 quid a week, I was about seventeen and just happy to be there. I was hoping I was going to be the next one given 30 grand a week!

“No, it was bizarre. And I always think Portsmouth and Millwall are similar clubs, the atmosphere in the

grounds, the old-school feel of it. It’s a working man’s club and it went a bit wrong and they ended up in League Two. “It worked out okay for me and my friends because they had to offload these high earners and there was no one else to play, so they gave younger players like me a chance and ultimately I took it.

“You see massive football clubs like Aston Villa potentially in trouble. You see these stories everywhere and it’s a credit to our club that we don’t get too excited and do things that we can’t do.

“Spending big is not the way we do it here. The group is really together and it’s hard to improve on what we’ve got with the finances of the club because we’ve got so many good players.”

Millwall have paid comparatively small fees for two players so far this summer, Murray Wallace and Jiri Skalak.

Skalak was targeted after Millwall missed out on Ben Marshall, and

Wallace joked the recruitment of the Czech Republic international has benefitted his home life. .

“He’s a nice lad. It’s no secret we want to improve,” Wallace said. “His set-piece delivery is good and he’s going to add to the group. It’s an ambitious group, there are lads here that run their hearts out. Whenever I’ve played with Czech or Polish lads they’re pretty much English in the way they play. They are hard and hardworking.

“Skalak will hopefully give us what Marshy gave us. Added bonus: he’s got a five-month-old little girl, and I’ve got a five-month-old little boy, so I’ve managed to palm the two girlfriends together and get a bit of peace and quiet at home while they go out for a coffee. It’s win-win!

“We were a good team before Marshy came and we’ll be a good team after him. We haven’t had a cardboard cutout of Marshy in the changing room and been cuddling it. He was a very

popular member of the group but he went to Norwich, it’s not a problem.

Aiden [O’Brien] has started the season well and we’ve added Skalak.

“For us it’s about moving on. There’s a really different feel here, the boys know they’re good enough now. In my opinion, in certain positions, we’ve got some of the stand-out players in the division.

“I feel we’re this close to being a threat to the top six. We will be anyway because of the way we play. The way the manager sets up, if you put eleven League Two players in the system they’re going to be hard to beat.

“You add in the individual quality that four or five players have going forward, I believe we can do some damage again this season.”

Wallace doesn’t sound like he has any intention of going anywhere. Millwall rejected bids of up to £10million from Middlesbrough last week for the former Wolves winger and George Saville.

And he is sensing Millwall could do something special this campaign.

“There’s a different belief around the squad this season,” Wallace continued.

“Last season everyone was wondering how we would do, and until we beat Leeds away [in January] we didn’t have the belief that we could roll over teams.

“It’s a completely different mentality in the dressing room and we know we can beat anyone.

“It should be a minimum for any footballer to give 110 per cent and none more so than here. Everyone is happy to have a tackle and a run and it’s a very unforgiving place, The Den, when you don’t try. The least you can do is give it your absolute all.

“Luckily we’ve got a group of players here that are very ambitious and the Championship is a great arena to show yourself. It’s somewhere you can really excel and if you do you get noticed. All the boys know that and as a group we want to impress people.”

IT WAS a painful watch for Jake Cooper and his team-mates – but he hopes that it is lesson learned for the rest of the season.

On the opening day of the campaign the Lions appeared to be coasting to a win, before a chaotic last ten minutes against Middlesbrough when they shed two goals and two points.

Millwall boss Neil Harris, his assistant Dave Livermore and the backroom staff rigorously go through post-match recordings with the squad, and would have pinpointed the defensive lapses that lost them a big scalp.

Cooper and his side went someway to making up for conceding those two goals with a first clean sheet of the season against Blackburn Rovers last weekend.

And the centre-back is relatively happy with the start of the season.

“I think it’s been good,” Cooper said. “You can look at it and say we’ve only got two points from the first two games but you see teams that have lost games that aren’t going into the weekend with as positive a mentality as us after a draw against Middlesbrough and a point away from home.

“They are good results to build on early in the season.

“It was heart-breaking in a way looking back at the end of the Boro game and you see them at the top of the league now. We were really strong against them and really should have come away with the three points.

“It was the first game of the season and we could learn a lot from it and make sure it doesn’t happen again for the rest of the season.

“We finished eighth last season, three points off the play-offs, and a lot of that was done in the second half of the season,” Cooper continued. “The manager would have looked at it and thought he didn’t need to change that much.

“Improving the players he’s already got and getting in a couple of players to push those in the team, increasing the competition, that’s what he’s done. We just need to maintain the form that we had towards the end of last season and continue to carry it on in this campaign.

“It’s great to have competition, you need it everywhere on the pitch. You don’t want anyone resting on their laurels after last season. Everyone needs to push themselves and adding competition for places is only going to help that.

“We know expectation goes off budgets and how big other clubs are in this league. I don’t think we need to put pressure on ourselves. We’re two games unbeaten in the league and we’re just going to try to continue that.”

Derby County are the visitors to The Den this Saturday, when Millwall will aim to inflict a second successive league defeat on Frank Lampard’s side.

Cooper said: “Both of their games have been on telly so we’ve been able to watch a lot of them. It’s been interesting to see how they’ve set up and how they’ve been trying to play.

“We can make it very difficult for them down at The Den and it’s one that everyone can look forward to. A big game against Derby is always an exciting prospect.”

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris will revert to his first-choice side for this Saturday’s meeting with Derby County at The Den after resting a number of key players against Gillingham on Tuesday night.

Harris could name the same side for the third consecutive league game as Millwall face another of the promotion favourites.

Ex-Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard has had a mixed start to his Rams reign. Derby pinched an injurytime winner in their opening Championship game at Reading, before being handed a football lesson by Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United last Saturday in a 41 loss.

The Lions could have more points on the board after dominating Middlesbrough but losing two goals in the last ten minutes and then starting well at Blackburn but

fading as Jordan Archer’s saves helped them take a point from Ewood Park.

Harris wasn’t entirely satisfied with his side’s performance against Rovers, and feels Lampard will also be trying to ensure his team bounces back this weekend.

“I thought Leeds were excellent on Saturday and I’m sure there will be some things that Frank Lampard won’t be happy about from his team,” Harris said.

“There were things I wasn’t happy about from my team on Saturday.

“Derby have got a hugely talented squad, a big pool of players to choose from. In my opinion they could pick two starting XIs that could comfortably compete in the top six in this division.

“We know it’s going to be a tough test.

They’ll be looking for a response but we’ll also be looking for a response after a disappointing second half at Blackburn.

cauldron of noise. It was an excellent game of football and a really top, top performance by us for just under 90 minutes.

“We certainly look forward to being back in league action at The Den.” Lampard also rested some key players for his side’s EFL Cup game at Oldham on Tuesday, and they will return to league action in South Bermondsey for what promises to be another special Den atmosphere.

Millwall refuse to buckle under pressure of multi-million pound bids

MILLWALL HAVE rejected bids of almost £15million for players this summer – but boss Neil Harris cautioned “there is a price for everybody”.

The Lions’ preparations for last Saturday’s game at Blackburn Rovers could have been severely disrupted after Middlesbrough made offers for George Saville and Jed Wallace, but both played at Ewood Park as Millwall

earned a point.

Glasgow Rangers also made serious moves to sign Jake Cooper, but Millwall wouldn’t budge in the face of several bids.

Owner John Berylson and the Millwall board have backed their manager, but the worry for Harris is that their players will attract attention up until the August 31 transfer deadline.

Millwall cannot compete with the wages on offer at the top Championship sides, and it would be wishful thinking to conclude that

players’ loyalty to the club would override financial packages that may be on offer elsewhere.

So far, Millwall have kept their firstteam squad intact as they look to build on last season’s eighth-place finish.

“All John is saying is that there is a price for everybody and we won’t stand in people’s way if the price is right,” Harris said.

“But we bring players in on our terms, according to what we need, when we want to bring them in, how they fit into our squad, and we’ll only let players go

on our terms as well. It’s a strong position for us to be in.

“We can’t go out and compete financially with Derby, Middlesbrough, Villa and a host of other clubs in this division. But it’s a sign of our ambition that we are determined to keep our squad together and we believe in them and want build on that.

“We’ve got no given right to repeat what we did last year but keeping our best players enables us to have a chance of hitting 50 points as quick as we can and build from there.”

Meanwhile, Millwall are continuing to try to add to their squad before this month’s deadline.

“This window has been a valuable lesson for all of us that a deal is never done until it’s done and as close as you get it can then be whipped away from you,” Harris said.

“My time of anticipating when a deal is going to be done is well gone. No matter how frustrating it gets you have to be patient. I’ve made it clear I want to add an attacking player and it’ll happen when it happens.”

JAKE COOPER spoke for the first time this week about Glasgow Rangers’ interest in him and stressed: “I love being at this club.”

After a series of impressive performance last season attracted the attention of a number of clubs, Steven Gerrard’s Rangers pursued Cooper determinedly, having a final bid of £3million turned down for the centre-back.

Cooper, 23, was aware of the Scottish giant’s offers, but insisted he was focused on his pre-season fitness training and repaying Millwall for their faith in him.

Millwall signed Cooper last summer after he had been told by

then-Reading boss Japp Stam he had no future at the club.

He was excellent alongside Shaun Hutchinson in the centre of defence as Millwall finished eighth last season, and Cooper didn’t have his head turned when Rangers came calling this summer.

“I was just focused on coming in and playing for Millwall and getting a good pre-season under my belt,” he told the News this week.

“I love being at this club and my main priority was just to get fit to have the best chance to have a good season with Millwall.

“What this club has done for me has been amazing, it’s something I wouldn’t be looking to throw away.

“I’ve had a great time here and that’s something I want to continue. The club has been great for me and I’ve loved every

minute playing for Millwall.

“It wasn’t down to me, they put a price on me and I’m more than happy to be still at Millwall. I want to build on last season and help take this club as high as we can go.”

Cooper wasn’t the only Lion targeted by some big clubs, with Middlesbrough last week bidding for George Saville and Jed Wallace.

“It shows how well we did last year, bids coming in for players,” Cooper added. “It shows the level of quality that we’ve got in the dressing room that big clubs like Middlesbrough and Rangers and whoever else are interested in our players.

“It’s testament to the club that they’ve kept the squad together and they should be happy with the work they’ve done. We’ve got a great squad now for this season.”
