Flying the World Cup flag for Bermondsey

R

esidents who covered their Bermondsey estate with three hundred flags at the start of the World Cup have said they’ve been ‘overwhelmed’ after their story went viral online.

They’ve put England flags, as well as others from around the world, such as those of Spain.

Portugal and France, which took them four and a half days to complete.

The nation’s media descended on the Kirby Estate after the News reported on them last week. And then residents on the estate received a FaceTime video from England players!

One of the organisers, Geraldine Howard said: “You’ve got to cheer on your country and we just feel like there’s so much negative stuff going on in the world at the moment it just cheers everyone up; the kids love it and it just brings everyone together.”

Another organiser, Alan Putman, said: “I just hope that other estates will lead from this, because there is so much negativity in the world maybe this might bring a bit of happiness into the world and cheer the country up.”

They, together with Chris Dowse, said they couldn’t have done it without the help of the rest of the estate.

There have been so many stories about rising crime in London, that it’s great to see such a positive story beamed around the world.

It was the community spirit of the people of Bermondsey that stood up there with the sporting headlines from the World Cup dominating the media.

The residents have described the reaction from around the country as ‘overwhelming’, but they are now planning something even bigger for the next World Cup!

Youngsters to get hands-on in operating theatre tour

YOUNGSTERS WILL get the chance to dissect real animal body parts when a touring operating theatre visits a Nunhead school.

St Thomas the Apostle College has been selected as one of the first venues to host the award-winning Operating Theatre Live in the UK. Operating Theatre Live are the UK’s only touring surgical experience, challenging students to explore careers in medicine and healthcare, with the aim of raising engagement.

The experience, being held on September 16 from 9 am to 5 pm, will immerse children into the centre of an operating theatre and let them practise real surgical techniques such as endoscopies and transplants.

Led by human anatomist Samuel Piri and his expert team of clinicians, there will be a chance to get hands on, dissecting real specimens like the brain, eyes, lungs and the heart. All dissection specimens are of spent swine origin and no animals have been harmed for the making of the experience, Operating Theatre Live has said.

“Each student will leave stretched and challenged, having made measurable progress against the GCSE, A Level, BTEC, Scottish National 5 and Highers science

specifications,” Mr Piri said.

DESPITE POLICE announcing the death of a popular 23-year-old man who was stabbed in broad daylight in Bermondsey, his family are maintaining a vigil at his bedside as he remains on life support this week.

As the News was going to press on Wednesday the family were still praying at his hospital bed and over 200 people came together to stage their own vigil in the Blue Market square in Bermondsey on Tuesday night.

On Monday, the News reported that the man, who was stabbed in Lucey Way on June 11, had sadly died after police launched a murder investigation and announced that he had been pronounced dead at 11.20am that day.

However, the brother of the young man, who we have agreed not to name at his family’s request, said the 23 year old was still on life support and his heart was beating on its own.

Speaking to the News, on Wednesday morning, the man’s brother said: “They did a response test where they tested his response to certain things and he didn’t respond.

“He didn’t pass the brain stem test, therefore from a legal stand point he is dead.

“Obviously in medical terms there’s nothing more they can do for him but we said let’s wait until his heart stops and he passes away himself.

“He is still on a support machine but his heart is still beating on its own.”

He added that his family was meant to travel to Canada last Wednesday for a relative’s wedding before his brother

was stabbed two days before.

“Half of our family is in Canada waiting on news,” he said.

The 23 year old’s family asked the community to keep the faith and to keep praying for him.

“Everyone in the community still has a bit of hope and that’s all we want until he decides to go,” his brother said.

Police and ambulance crews were called to a residential address in Lucey Way at about 6.21pm on Monday, June 11, after the 23 year old was stabbed.

Detective Inspector Ian Titterrell, who is leading the murder investigation, said: "At this early stage, we believe an altercation involving a group of males began outside Helen Taylor House in

Linsey Street.

“The victim then took shelter at an address on Lucey Way after being attacked.

"We know there were a large number of people in the vicinity at the time of the attack and I am appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.

"Any information will be treated with

the strictest of confidence."

The director of fitness group Bootcamp SE16, which is based at Stave Hill Ecological Park, has launched selfdefence classes for residents as a “direct response” to the incident to teach people how to manage conflict in certain scenarios.

The community march, organised by the Canada Water Safety Network, will begin at Stave Hill steps at 11am on Sunday, June 24.

Claire Nash Thurlow, joint co-ordinator of the march and the Canada Water Safety Network, said: “We’ve had such a great response to the march event and the safety network group from across Rotherhithe, Canada Water and also Bermondsey. people want to do something constructive.

“People are concerned and unhappy with the level of policing resources but they understand what the constraints are and why. The community wants to help the police to help themselves - not just by

reporting and logging crime but by sharing information with each other, offering support and advice.

“We also want to promote youth services and positive initiatives that engage our kids, and signpost more clearly what is available to them. There is a perception that good projects, including youth clubs - even something as basic as where an adventure playground is - are not flagged up enough.”

Redriff Primary School headteacher Mickey Kelly, Sergeant Bill Lowden of Southwark Police, and Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle are all expected to speak at the event on Sunday.

The organisers hope they will also be joined by cycling pressure group Bikestormz of the Bikes Up, Knives Down campaign.

The route will begin at Stave Hill and head to Deal Porter Square via Albion Channel, then back the same way to Russia Dock Woodland.

Family-friendly ‘reclaim’ march planned for Sunday ROTHERHITHE

RESIDENTS WILL come together for a family-friendly march on Sunday to “reclaim” their area after a string of muggings and knife crime.

The peaceful demonstration has been organised following a number of incidents around Russia Dock Woodland and Stave Hill Ecological Park, including a robbery involving two women who were walking through the park with their children on June 1.

One of the women was stabbed in the hand during the robbery, while a 49-yearold man, who was passing by and tried to intervene, was also stabbed in the hand.

A 22-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of robbery and bailed pending further inquiries to a date in late June.

RIBUTES HAVE been paid to three graffiti artists struck dead by a train at Loughborough Junction in the early hours of Monday morning.

All three bodies have now been formally identified as Harrison Scott-Hood, aged 23, from Muswell Hill, and Jack Gilbert, also aged 23, and Fresneda Carrasco, from Hampstead – who was just nineteen, and planning on studying graphic design at university this September.

Alberto’s family said his loss had left them with a ‘deep hole’ in their family, while Harrison’s parents described him as ‘the love of our life’, and said they were ‘beyond broken’ at the death of their ‘beautiful artist’ son.

Officers have now confirmed it is believed all three were hit by an out of service passenger train shortly after 1am on Monday morning, while ‘spraying graffiti’.

Detective Superintendent Gary Richardson said: “We have a dedicated team working to establish how these young men came to be on the tracks in the early hours of yesterday morning.

“The initial evidence we have been able to gather indicates that the men may have been on the track for the purposes of spraying graffiti.

“We know the men were seen in the Brixton area of south London earlier on Sunday evening and we are working to trace their movements.”

The same day, a spray painted message appeared, simply saying ‘RIP’ with flowers and spray paint cans placed underneath (pictured above).

On social media, the three men have been identified by their artist names, as ‘Kbag’, ‘Lover’ and ‘Trip’.

Police were initially called to the station near Brixton at 7.34am on Monday morning after reports of three bodies found on the tracks. All three men were declared dead at the scene.

After pictures circulated seemingly showing spray cans being carried out by officers in evidence bags, British Transport Police said it was aware of ‘a number of speculative comments about this on social media’, but that it was ‘too early for us to comment on their reasons for being on the track’.

It also appealed to the press and public to stop sharing graphic images and footages of detectives investigating the scene, asking people to ‘keep in mind that three families have lost loved ones this morning’.

Officers are still appealing for help tracing the three men’s movements.

‘BEAUTIFUL ARTIST SON’

THE FAMILY of one of the men who died at Loughborough Junction have paid tribute to their son, 23-year-old Harrison Scott-Hood, from Muswell Hill.

In a formal statement published by British Transport Police, Harrison’s parents Susie and Perry said: “We are completely heartbroken by the loss of our only son, Harrison.

“He was the love of our life, a kind and beautiful young man and we were beyond broken by this news.

“Harrison was loved by everyone, he was an intelligent and wonderful boy who had so many close friends.

“Over the past 24 hours we’ve received so many lovely messages of support from his friends and we are both grateful for all of their support and kindness.

“Hearing about their love and friendship for Harrison is helping us during this awful time.

“Many people will know Harrison loved to travel, he was a beautiful artist and spent time recently travelling around Vietnam and Cambodia.

“Harrison completed us. He is irreplaceable and we will hold the memories of him dearly. We now ask for privacy as we come to terms with the loss of Harrison.”

FRENDEDA WAS ALL SET FOR UNIVERSITY

THE PARENTS of nineteenyear-old Alberto Frendeda Carrasco said their late son was preparing to go to university in September to study graphic design.

His family said: "With great pain we have received the news of the death of our son, Alberto, in the incident in which two other young people also lost their lives in the vicinity of Brixton station.

“The British Transport Police informed us on Monday afternoon.

We believe the three were hit by a train when they were painting graffiti late at night in a particularly dangerous place.

"Alberto had left home at five o’clock on Sunday afternoon. His last message was at ten o’clock that evening announcing his intention to return home for dinner.

“Our concern grew after many hours without hearing from him. From early in the morning we learned of the accident in which “three men” had died in Brixton, but at first we did not establish the connection.

“Alberto Fresneda Carrasco was born in New York and had turned 19

on 25 May. Alberto had dual nationality, Spanish and American, although he felt at home in north London.

“He arrived in the city with his friends at the end of 2011, in time of the Olympic Games. Our most emotional memories of him was the basketball final between the United States and Spain. As a child he played football in a local team in London, his heart was divided between Everton and Sevilla. From a very young age, his passion was to draw. He was ready to study graphic design at the London College of Communication (LCC) from September.

“In recent years, he showed interest in the world of fashion and came up with a brand with his own designs.

“Another of his hobbies was buying clothes in charity shops and reselling it on the internet. He had a special eye for business.

"His absence has left a deep hole in the family. His mother Isabel, his father Carlos and his bothers Miguel (21) and Julio (14) appreciate the support and ask that their privacy be respected in these specially sad times for us and for the city."

On Monday, although police had issued a formal statement saying it was too early to speculate on the cause of death, images circulated by Sky News and other media outlets – including helicopter footage – appeared to show spray cans recovered near the bodies.

Brian Cooke posted: "Why do @BBCNews @tomedwards keep referring to the guys killed at #LoughboroughJunction as graffiti 'artists'.

"They are no such thing they are common scum and criminals who cost the railway millions and keep fares high".

Mr Cooke locked his Twitter account after receiving a torrent of angry replies.

Johnny Hutch tweeted: “Three ARTISTS have been killed in a train crash, lives have been taken, families are grieving and all you can think about is the fu**ing cost. You’re a disgrace!”

Twitter user Mark Dyson described him as the ‘epitome of gammon,’ referring to the lately-coined insult used to describe right-wing, middle-aged men, while someone posting under the name Dorokeki said: “The comments on twitter about the bodies found at #LoughboroughJunction sicken me.

“Being hit by a train is an awful way to die and no one deserves that. Having seen bodies that have been hit by a train I can honestly say it’s horrific & life changing.”

It’s not the first time his social media use has landed Mr Cooke in hot water.

Last month he was suspended from his role as Beckenham Conservative party chairman over allegations of offensive tweets towards other politicians.

THE LIBERAL Democrats have won all three seats in the byelection in London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward.

Humaira Ali, William Houngbo and Damian Shaun O'Brien were declared as the winning candidates in the new ward on Friday.

It means the Liberal Democrats now have a total of fourteen seats in Southwark compared to thirteen in 2014, while Labour has 49 seats.

Speaking to the News on Friday, Councillor Damian O’Brien said Southwark Liberal Democrats were “enormously pleased” to have three councillors in the ward after the two wards it replaced - Riverside and Grange - were split between Liberal Democrats and Labour at the last election.

“I felt fairly positive ahead going into the count,” he said. “Our data was looking good to be fair but the total unknown – and this is why politics is so unpredictable – is the fact we didn’t know what the Labour data was so all you can do is put your best foot forward and we had some very talented key people in the campaign who volunteered their time.

“I have to say the count this morning was a lot tighter than I expected; at one point our agent thought we might have to go through a recount and then I started getting really worried in the end but the numbers fell our way and after all that effort we got there.

“It’s the first gain for Southwark Liberal Democrats since 2002; in 2010 we lost control of the council, in 2014 we went down to thirteen seats, and then on May 3 we had eleven seats and now fourteen.

“We’ve gone through some hard times as Liberal Democrats – some of it was self-inflicted – but hopefully we are getting back into a steady forwardmoving ship and we are ready to gain again.”

“The number of Southwark Liberal Democrat councillors has now gone up for the first time since 2002 (and across England in this spring's local council elections Liberal Democrats also made more gains than Labour).

“In our borough where there are now no Conservative or Green party councillors, Liberal Democrats are the only elected opposition. We will make sure we hold the Labour-run council to account."

The election in London Bridge and West Bermondsey had to be cancelled on May 3 after Conservative candidate Toby Eckersley sadly died unexpectedly.

Flying the World Cup flag for Bermondsey!

Residents on estate covered with 300 flags ‘overwhelmed’ by coverage - and video call from England squad players

RESIDENTS ON a Bermondsey estate which went viral after they covered it in 300 England flags have said they have been ‘overwhelmed’ by the reaction, which included a video call from players in the England squad.

Every year on St George’s Day, residents on the Kirby Estate off Southwark Park Road dust off their England flags and proudly hang them out on their balconies in an impressive display.

And for this year’s World Cup they decided to go one step further, buying in more than 70 extra England flags especially for the occasion and flying flags from other countries.

But never did they imagine that their estate would go viral overnight after the News reported on their support – and that just a couple of days later they would come face to face with members of the England squad.

Speaking to the News, Geraldine Howard, 52, and Alan Putman, 48, who helped put all of the flags up with Chris

Dowse, 39, admitted they were a “little bit overwhelmed”.

“It has been overwhelming because we’re not celebrities, we’re just normal people who go to work every day and all of a sudden bam,” said Geraldine, a pharmacy advisor who has lived on the estate for 29 years.

“You’ve got to cheer on your country and we just feel like there’s so much negative stuff going on in the world at the moment it just cheers everyone up; the kids love it and it just brings everyone together.”

“The best thing, I’ll be honest with you, was the FaceTime video link to the England players,” added Alan, who works for Speedy tool hire and has lived there for eleven years.

“They got in touch with Chris and set up a live video link and asked which football team we support and we support Liverpool – unfortunately it’s not just all Millwall supporters round here – and the guy said he’d try to get Jordan Henderson.

“I was in my St George outfit and they started talking to Jordan and then Trent Alexander-Arnold came in to wish him happy birthday and he was there, so it

was fantastic because it was two Liverpool players as well as England players.

“We just chatted to them; it was brilliant. That really was the icing on the cake.”

The pair said they couldn’t have pulled it off without the support of the rest of the estate – and that they had something even bigger up their sleeves for the next World Cup. “I just hope that other estates will lead from this, because there is so much negativity in the world maybe this might bring a bit of happiness into the world and cheer the country up,” said Alan.

“People associate the St George’s Cross with racism or political issues, but it’s not about that at all,” Geraldine added.

“As you can see we’ve got other flags up we’ve got Spanish, Moroccan, Portuguese, Polish, and French.”

The friends admitted it would “hurt” them to take the flags down if England is knocked out of the tournament – especially since it took four and a half days to put them up in the first place – but said they’d be happy as long as the team tries its best.

“It will hurt us taking them down but if they play well and give it their best then I don’t mind, as long as they give it their best,” said Alan.

“We did ask the England players if they could bring the World Cup home for us and they did say they’d try.”

After winning 2-1 to Tunisia on Monday, England will next play Panama on June 24.

Mum who teaches kids how to code up for award

A DULWICH mum of two whose vision is to teach every young child how to code has been shortlisted for an award.

Liane Katz is on a mission to give every young child the confidence and ability to code, which is now included in the school curriculum.

The businesswoman set up MAMA.codes – a club which teaches children as young as three to seven how to code through song, rhyme and storytelling using a free app called ScratchJr. As a result, the businesswoman has earned herself a place in the final lineup of the Mpower National Business Awards.

She has been shortlisted for the Vision Award for her plans to roll out her London-wide children’s coding clubs across the UK and then franchise MAMA.codes internationally.

“It was an amazing feeling to be shortlisted for this award and for MAMA.codes to be selected as we are a company trying to do business differently,” said Liane.

“Everyone on the team is able to work flexibly and remotely when needed, and currently all our local area teachers are parents too.

“We have a unique teaching method that introduces children as young as three to coding through song, rhyme and storytelling.

“MAMA.codes offers online learnto-code projects, runs kids’ code clubs and holiday workshops, supplies lesson-ready materials to schools and pre-schools and runs ‘parent hacks’ – a relaxed and sociable way to get to grips with the coding curriculum and learn fun ways to support your child’s

learning and enjoy healthier screen time as a family.”

As well as being shortlisted for the Vision Award category, Liane is also in with a chance of winning the title of Mpower Woman of the Year 2018.

The winners of the awards – which celebrate parents throughout the UK who manage the difficult task of juggling business with family life – will be announced at The Mpower Gala at the Holiday Inn, in Bloomsbury, on June 23.

Campaign today for ‘place of sanctuary’ CAMBERWELL

CAMPAIGNERS WILL gather outside the Maudsley Hospital today to make the case for a 24hour “place of sanctuary” for mental health patients.

Since the emergency clinic at the psychiatric hospital in Camberwell was closed in 2007, patients have been directed to King’s College Hospital A&E department nearby.

But campaigners say the busy A&E can feel like an “awful place to be” for patients suffering a mental health crisis – and that they want to see a separate 24-hour walk-in centre opened, especially for children, young people, pregnant women, and women with babies.

A demonstration organised by Southwark Pensioners’ Action Group (SPAG) will be held outside Maudsley Hospital, in Denmark Hill, from 12-2pm today, Thursday.

Tom White, health spokesperson for SPAG, said it would be the “biggest thing we will ever have accomplished” if they succeed in getting a place of sanctuary for mental health patients opened.

He added that he thought it was “outrageous” that patients in a mental health crisis were expected to go to King’s A&E.

A spokesperson for South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust said a separate emergency department for psychiatric patients at Maudsley Hospital would be a “considerable step backwards for the parity of esteem for our patients”.

“Many patients with mental health problems attending A&E also have significant physical health conditions that require urgent assessment and treatment, which are best addressed within an A&E,” the spokesperson added. “A significant number of these patients also require mental health assessment and treatment.”

Fresh protests planned at university over Elephant & Castle shopping centre proposal

A FRESH round of protests against the Elephant and Castle town centre regeneration are planned this week, after campaigners demanded that University of the Arts London – one of the developer’s partners – reject Delancey’s revised offer.

As the News reported in March, after lobbying from residents and businesses, Delancey submitted revised plans to Southwark Council, with several concessions including 74 homes at social rent – with the aim of increasing to 116 and ten per cent affordable retail units.

Delancey had also said it was ‘looking to provide temporary retail space for displaced traders’ and a relocation fund of £634,700 would also be distributed by the council.

Councillor’s final votes on plans were put on hold as the elections rapidly approached, with a final vote expected in the coming months.

But now campaigners have targeted University of the Arts London with renewed efforts, lobbying it with an open letter sent by the 35% campaign stating that Delancey’s offer ‘gives with one hand and takes away with another’.

The letter demands that the university backtracks on its support for Delancey unless the developer can promise 35% housing – with half at social rent and half at London Living Rent, relocation or compensation for all traders, and a commitment to keep the bingo and bowling halls on site.

The letter goes on to say: “We are not opposed to development and the improvement of the Elephant and Castle

area, in fact we would welcome it. We also appreciate LCC’s need for a new building.

“Our issue with the current proposal is that it does not bring tangible benefits to local people in terms of housing (or leisure), nor for existing traders and that is why we are asking for your support in putting forward these demands.”

Signatories include Alvey Tenants’ and Residents’Association, the Rockingham Community Association and Southwark Law Centre.

Tanya Murat, chair of Defend Southwark Council Housing, told the News why she signed the letter: “Some changes have been made to the planning application but it still falls far short of our demands.

“We want homes for people not for profit, a place for all the traders and community organisations and the bingo and bowling should stay.

“This is our Elephant, not theirs.”

In a reply seen by the News on Monday, Natalie Brett, head of college for University of the Arts London, confirmed its support for Delancey’s proposals: “It is our understanding from both Southwark Borough Council and Delancey, that the current proposals for affordable housing, the relocation strategy for traders, and leisure facilities have all moved forward materially from the original application and that they are continuing to work with stakeholders on finding solutions to provide a positive outcome for all parties.

“The campaign’s lobbying has paid significant dividends and while this may not meet all of your aspirations, we believe that the proposal will offer many educational, cultural and economic opportunities for local communities.”

The letter goes on to say that the college’s future in Elephant and Castle is ‘not assured’, as ‘staying in our current building is not an option.’

A spokesperson for Delancey said: “Since the Planning Committee in January 2018, we have been working hard to revise our offer for the new Elephant and Castle Town Centre.

“We will continue to inform the community on the revised plans and await details of the confirmed Planning Committee date in due course.”

Campaign for more school governor diversity

A SCHOOL governor from East Dulwich is one of the driving forces behind a new campaign which aims to increase the number of governors volunteering from ethnic minorities and younger age groups.

Yinka Ewuola, who is the chair of governors at Cobourg Primary School, stepped forward along with six other volunteers to spearhead the Everyone on Board campaign.

She was motivated to do so after hearing that just four per cent of the estimated quarter of a million school governors across England come from ethnic minorities, compared to around a third of pupils.

Yinka said: “Education is so powerful and one of the biggest tools for social mobility, so people making decisions about education need to be the best and, by rights, should be diverse.”

The campaign was launched at the National Governance Association’s (NGA) summer conference on June 9.

Through its work with governing boards, the National Governance

Association (NGA), in partnership with Inspiring Governance, will support school governing boards to consider whether they reflect the community they serve and provide guidance to help them address possible problems.

Chief executive of the NGA, Emma Knights, said: “Governors and trustees donate their skills, time and experience to ensure all children can achieve their full potential.

“Having diverse and balanced governing boards that reflect the communities they serve will ensure that different insights and perspectives shape conversations, and that thinking is robustly challenged, resulting in better decision-making and outcomes for all pupils.”

Earlier this month Valletta told the News: “We’re over 50 but we aren’t dead yet. We’re still here, and we can still have fun like the youngsters.”

The 57-year-old social work student said “It wasn’t really nervewracking, since we were so busy having fun,” and that she was still in touch with some of the other ladies who took part.”

When Paddy asked the ladies “Girls are you turned on or turned off?", the answer was a resounding yes - as all 30 kept their lights on.

Susan loved his big smile and chubby cheeks - and nabbed herself a kiss while giving them a squeeze, but it was gorgeous Valletta who left him shaken and stirred.

The proud Italian dad from Oxford used to work in the ‘rag trade’ and once had his own store, but it was his dance skills that won over Valletta.

she’d left her light on she gave a one word answer – “hips!”

The deciding question came when George asked the remaining ladies: “If you had an empty swimming pool, what would you fill with it?”

George said marshmallows, and Valletta replied: “You put the chocolate in and I’ll do the backstroke in it.”

It turned out that Valletta had

indeed been his ‘love at first light’ – the lady he told Paddy was his favourite from the outset.

And although Valletta admitted she’d initially only left her light on accidentally, she was won over by George and his quest to find someone ‘young at heart and full of life’. And the News is pleased to report, the pair have agreed to go on a second date.

Over 100 youngsters receive Jack Petchey awards

OVER 100 young people from schools across Southwark were presented with Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Awards last week.

The winners, aged between eleven and 25, were been nominated by their teachers and parents for their dedicated and hard work they have done in their youth club or secondary school.

Each prizewinner received a medallion as well as a framed certificate and a cheque for £250 each, which they are encouraged to spend on helping their club or school.

In addition to the Achievement Awards, three adults were also praised

with Leadership prizes, medallions, and certificates, because of their outstanding ability to motivate young people.

The Mayor of Southwark, councillor Catherine Rose, reflected on the evening, saying: “Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to the staff, volunteers, parents and carers for their support.

“Jack Petchey is an inspiration to us all. I hope others in our borough will want to give something back to the community in the same way.”

One of the winners was Lara Vollmer, a keen cricketer who attends The Charter School, Red Post Hill.

She attends training sessions every Tuesday lunchtime and on Wednesday's after school.

In order to help manage growing numbers, Lara has started to train the Year Seven players whilst the head coach looks after the Year Eight and

Nine players.

With her £250 Jack Petchey Achievement Award grant, Lara is

going to buy new equipment for the teams, including a set of balls, a bat and some bat handle grips.

Sir Jack Petchey CBE started the foundation in 1999 to raise the aspirations of young people by making sure their achievements and dedicated work in society were recognised, valued and rewarded.

Since then, The Jack Petchey Foundation has funded over 2,000 programmes across London and Essex that celebrate positive contributions of young people in society. In Southwark, youth organisations and schools have received £1,291,608 in funding since the foundation began working with the community in 2005.

Health secretary joins Joe to cycle 100 cancer charity walk miles for charity Joe Cannon

BROADCASTER JONATHAN Dimbleby and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt were among more than 100 people to walk from St Thomas’ Hospital to Guy’s Hospital on foot to raise money for a cancer charity.

This is the fourth year the broadcaster has led the 50km walk, which raises money for Dimbleby Cancer Care – the charity set up in his father Richard Dimbleby’s name.

The fundraiser was also an opportunity for the charity to raise awareness of its recently-launched website www.cancercaremap.org which is a free, online directory of cancer support services which helps people across the UK locate care and support services near to them.

As well as the Health Secretary, Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth and Liberal Democrat MP

Norman Lamb were also at the event on Friday, June 15.

For the first time this year there was also a 25km mid-distance and 12km family distance in addition to the 50km route.

Mr Hunt, who took part in the 25km distance, said: “I lost my father to cancer in 2013, a year into my tenure as Health Secretary.

“Since then, I've been struck time and again by the fact that patients and families affected by cancer need much more than just medical care and treatment: they need practical and emotional care and support along the way, and Dimbleby Cancer Care is doing amazing work offering just that to people across the country.

“Their new Cancer Care map is a great example of this: a directory of services in each local area for families facing cancer, from NHS services to mental health support to practical assistance.”

Jonathan Dimbleby added: “Thank you to everyone for your support; we could not do it without you.”

Starting at St Thomas’ Hospital, the walkers headed west to Putney, on to Hammersmith Bridge before heading out to Canary wharf and down to Greenwich via the Greenwich foot tunnel, and finally heading back to the charity’s home at Guy’s Cancer Centre.

The event has raised £245,000 for Dimbleby Cancer Care since it began in 2015.

The charity was set up in 1966 in memory of broadcaster Richard Dimbleby and is based at Guy’s Cancer Centre in Southwark.

It provides practical and psychological support to people living with cancer and to their families and carers.

Additionally, the charity has funded over £2.7million in research grants since 2004 looking at all aspects of cancer care and support.

A 39-year-old Peckham man will cycle 100 miles this July in order to raise money for research on genetic diabetes.

Joe Cannon has genetic diabetes himself, which is a very rare form of the disease. The vast majority of cases are either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

In the UK alone, there are about 4.6 million people living with diabetes, yet only 20,000-40,000 of those cases are caused by genetics.

Mr Cannon was diagnosed at age nineteen, and has been living with the condition since. “I inherited a rare strain of genetic diabetes from one or both of my parents,” Mr Cannon said.

“My dad died nearly fifteen years ago so I can’t be sure what form of diabetes he had, but my mother has the same gene, and it looks as though my brother has it too.”

Doctors’ surgery rated ‘good’ by watchdog

Genetic diabetes – also called Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) – is caused by a mutation in a single gene. If a parent has this gene mutation, there is a 50 per cent chance of their child inheriting it.

“I recently became a father and I’m really hoping my one-year-old son doesn’t have the gene,” Mr Cannon said.

“But if he does I would like to help Diabetes UK in the fight against it.”

Mr Cannon also completed Ride London for Diabetes UK in 2016, and managed to raise £1,500 for the charity.

This year his goal is £1,000, as being a father means more responsibilities to juggle.

Mr Cannon is also a barrister, and the owner of Federation Coffee in Brixton.

The Diabetes UK Ride London will take place on July 29. The route begins in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London, heads out to the Surrey Hills, and then returns to a finish line on The Mall in central London.

A BOROUGH doctors’ surgery has been taken out of special measures and rated ‘good’ overall by the health watchdog.

The Falmouth Group Practice, in Falmouth Road, was previously in special measures and rated ‘requires improvement’ by the Care Quality Commission.

But it was found to be ‘good’ in all areas for being safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led, at its most recent inspection in April.

Inspectors also saw one area of ‘outstanding’ practice regarding the method of training and assessment of competence for pharmacists introduced by the new contract holder AT Medics.

Concerns at the previous CQC inspection related to the management of medicines, systems to manage infection

control, safeguarding, safety alerts and significant events.

However, inspectors found all the concerns raised had been addressed at the latest inspection.

Staff were also found to involve and treat patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect, and to communicate with people in a way that they could understand, for example by using communication aids and providing easy-read materials.

Inspectors found that the surgery could continue with work to improve the uptake of bowel and breast screening, and that it should advertise translation services in the reception area. Professor Ursula Gallagher, deputy chief inspector primary medical services, said: “Falmouth Group Practice is now providing ‘good’ care and has been taken out of special measures as a result of the significant improvements that the provider has made.

A BRIEF HISTORY

FESTIVALS IN Bermondsey date as far back as 'A Fête at Bermondsey or A Marriage Feast at Bermondsey', reimagined by Flemish painter Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder (below).

The Bermondsey Carnival first came to town in July 1900, as a fundraising event for the Daily Telegraph’s war time ‘Widows and Orphans’ support fund during the Boer War (1899 - 1902).

For nearly 120 years, the Carnival has evolved into an annual event, establishing itself in the process as a local treasure that the people of Bermondsey are immensely proud of.

It has continued to be celebrated through numerous cultural changes to the area, a host of national and local governments as well as two world wars.

Sometime in the early 1980s, however, the celebrations gradually faded away and eventually ceased to be.

But, on a late summer’s evening at The Ancient Foresters pub, two local residents reminisced about the good old days of the Carnival. And, after receiving support from The Friends of Southwark Park and later Bermondsey Beat, the Carnival was back on the agenda.

They have been to the Caribbean several times to play for Richard Branson’s Virgin parties, Portugal’s famous summer festas every year for eight consecutive years and Moscow’s nightclubs and corporate parties.

The Golden Girls love to perform the music of ABBA to the local people around them because: “You can see an instant audience reaction and a true sense of communal togetherness!

“To see everyone, young and old alike, singing along is a true pleasure.”

Original star of the West End and Broadway smash hit show, the Rat Pack live from Las Vegas, Louis Hoover will be saluting the late great Frank Sinatra at this year’s carnival.

Performing a selection of hits by Ol’ Blue Eyes, Louis is looking forward to sharing his love of music with the people of Bermondsey.

“As a special gesture and in celebration of my Birthday which will also be celebrated on Carnival day”, the Grammy nominee said, “I am offering my fellow Bermondsey residents a free download of both my albums that I will be singing from in the bandstand” Louis’s marvellous talent has been recognised by celebrities across the world. I am taking action to fight the rail delays

A

LMOST EVERY day following the introduction of the new Thameslink Railway timetable people in Camberwell and Peckham have contacted me exasperated telling that the delays and cancellations have caused total upheaval in their lives.

They’ve paid for their season tickets but they’ve been late for work, missed hospital appointments, been late to collect their children from school and suffered misery on their daily travel. And the overcrowding on the platforms and in the trains is dangerous.

And people’s frustration has only been worsened by mishandling by Govia Thameslink Railway.

Though the new timetable fiasco has definitely exacerbated the problems, anyone who lives in Camberwell & Peckham will know that problems caused by Southern and Thameslink started well before this and trains have been cancelled, late or dangerously overcrowded from Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye and Nunhead every week for the best part of three years. The stations

are now bursting - the number of passengers has doubled in the last five years - and people are at their wits end.

For example, before the May timetable change there were three direct trains from Nunhead into Farringdon every hour. Now there is just one an hour, which does not even come at the same time from week to week. “It’s impossible to plan my journey to work” one man told me.

The Government admits the service is ‘wholly unsatisfactory’ but they need to get a grip on the situation and ensure there is some level of accountability of train operators. I am demanding they demonstrate some urgency in tackling this matter and, together with many other MPs, I am taking action to push them on this: I have scheduled a meeting with the Rail Minister, Jo Johnson MP, to protest delays and demand an urgent response.

I have written to the new CEO of Govia Thameslink Railway to ask what they are doing to fix this rail disruption as soon as possible and compensate passengers.

STONISHINGLY, WE have arrived at the longest day (21st June).

It has been a mainly fine and dry month with low rain fall and cool night-time temperatures. This year the storms and heavy down pours occurred in May. June is the most prolific month in the gardening year for flowers; the sheer variety is astonishing.

Evenings are filled with gorgeous scents from shrubs, trees and herbs. Honeysuckle (pictured) is one of my favourites – it’s an agile climber that begins flowering in late May, continuing for many weeks; the perfume is rich and intoxicating. Jasmine is already clothed in delicate white flowers giving a spicy fragrance, as is the Philadelphus (Mock orange). It has been a great year for the hybrid tea roses; they have produced masses of fabulous soft blooms with delicate sweet and complex perfumes. Some varieties of Lavender started to bloom - just as the Sage flowers fade away and this sturdy plant reverts to its evergreen place in the herb garden.

Towering Lime trees are covered in tiny nectar-rich flowers which produce a light clean scent.

Maximum light levels, warmth and rising humidity turbo-charge

growth; weeds must be removed on a regular basis and before they set seed. Slugs and snails are numerous; other pests such as aphids quickly infest flowering plants - deal with these quickly they can introduce viruses which will weaken and disfigure plants.

There are environmentally kinder sprays that effectively deal with a range of pests; chemical pesticides tend to kill the beneficial insects like bees, ladybirds and lacewings (the latter eat aphids).

I’ve met Network Rail to ask what steps they are taking to keep people safe on platforms. I welcome their commitment that both Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye stations are being prioritised in the top ten stations for redevelopment. I am demanding the Government now put in the money to back this up.

Libby’s Eyes: Every Monday and Thursday – 7pm Libby is visually impaired, but she wants to function like everyone else.

Inspirational. Her life suddenly changes when she takes on a dystopian world of Reasonable Adjustment Robots with no social skills and a government that categorises disabled people as ‘functioning” and “non-functioning’.

Libby’s Eyes examines the human relationships in life as a disabled person and what it truly means to function.

Nine Foot Nine: Every Monday and Thursday – 8:30pm

The Universal Plight of Parenthood PACO BEZZERRA'S The Little Pony is part of the Cervantes Theatre's New Spanish Playwriting Season, writes Rene Eyre.

We are told in the programme notes that the play addresses bullying, identity, sexual orientation and education, so I was immediately intrigued to see how these huge, universal themes were going to be dealt with. The play was written after Bezzerra read the news of a 9-year-old boy from North Carolina, who suffered severe bullying as a result of carrying a My Little Pony backpack to school and found himself being punished by the school.

The intimate theatre space was organised with seating on three sides of the stage and a simple, contemporary set of a vivid pink living room draped with sheer pink curtains, and with a sweet picture of Timmy, the absent central character of the story that was about to unfurl. As we take our seats we see the boy’s parents at the end of a working day winding down before bed. Dad is on the floor stretching a sore back (he is a taxi driver), and Mum sitting in an armchair reading a self-help book: 'When You Know Magic Works'. There is a loving exchange between them and all seems right in the world. But this domestic harmony gradually unravels as the parents try to understand why their son is being bullied.

Initially, the idea that Timmy's obsessive need to cling to his pink My Little Pony backpack as a lucky talisman, and his unique signifier, is cute and amusing, but as the bullying escalates you realise how important this object is to the boy and the whole family's dilemma.

Soon we witness the various ways

Cara and Nate are a hard-working young couple looking to start a family, until suddenly a vast proportion of all the women start to grow. The awareness that women are now physically more powerful than men sends shockwaves through society. What will happen to industry, media, families, sex?

No One is Coming to Save You: Every Tuesday and Friday – 7pm No One Is Coming to Save You is the hypnotic story of two young lives lived in social, political and economic fear.

Section 2 - Every Tuesday and Friday – 8:30pm Peter Imms play explores what it means to be sectioned and how we process and aid the recovery of those afflicted.

Kiss Chase Every - Wednesday and Saturday – 7pm Kiss Chase is a part-interactive, part-

parents try to cling on to their love and loyalty to their child, and their struggle to reach a consensus without compromising their personal beliefs.

The simple narrative becomes more complex as the audience are pulled into the parents’ dilemma of how to respond to Timmy's treatment at school. We see them wrestle with their own hopes, fears and prejudices. We witness their pain and anger and attempts to present a united front to the school, and while the happy domestic scene comes apart we see the parents’ duplicity and palpable helplessness. The Little Pony is a modern parable that is universal; it is also an important piece of modern writing.

This was a 90 minute play without an interval and yet it was so compelling and engaging from the very beginning that the time flew. There was an element of voyeurism as the audience peered past the diaphanous pink curtains into the couple's living room to watch the catastrophic results of bullying take its toll on the family's psychology and stability. As I stepped back into the evening I had to ask myself how I would have responded in a similar situation, and that is the strength of this play - it forces us all to face and question our own prejudices.

Blue Peter Duncan is The Dame

THE CURTAINS fall on another show and a seasoned pantomime dame is alone in his dressing room, unaware he is preparing for his own performance of a lifetime, writes Michael Holland.

Ronald Roy Humphrey has returned to the northern seaside town where he grew up for the Christmas season, and finds himself bitterly confronted with why he left all those years before.

As he starts to excavate his past, he steps back into history, bringing to life the ghosts who once paraded and performed along the piers and promenades, removing the layers one by one until he arrives at a tragic truth he had spent his whole life trying to forget.

A lost world of seaside entertainment, old time music hall and pantomime are brought to life in this one-man show where the past and present collide, where magical realism meets bleak reality, and however many masks we wear, the truth will always be exposed.

The Dame is a father and daughter collaboration; a one man show starring Peter Duncan, written by his daughter Katie. Originally inspired by their family history of seaside summer entertainment and pantomime, which Peter grew up surrounded by, the play gradually evolved into a fictional, dark drama set amid the nostalgic backdrop of this golden, forgotten era.

Peter Duncan is a born and bred South Londoner, from growing up in Beckenham to now living in Wandsworth. He is probably best known for presenting Blue Peter in the 1980s, but he is a man who was diverted into those presenting adventures after starting off as an actor. In fact, at aged just 16 he was working in Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company at the Old Vic, and has been nominated for an Olivier award for one of the many top musicals his skills have graced.

But we shouldn’t be surprised at this because he says that his parents were performers in variety, so that atmosphere and environment rubbed

off on the young Peter.

Of this latest adventure he says, ‘The Dame grew out of my father’s early career doing beach shows on Redcar Sands after the war, and my daughter’s work in women’s refuges… My character in The Dame is heading for his King Lear moment in terms of pantomime and tragedy.’

The unsung heroes of Tower Bridge

THE UNSUNG heroes behind the construction of Tower Bridge will be commemorated in a new exhibition.

Opening in June 2018, the permanent Two Towers exhibition will focus on the contributions of the architects, markers, thinkers and technicians who designed, built and laid the very foundations of London’s most defining landmark.

Tower Bridge was the eight-year structural child of nineteenth century architect Sir Horace Jones and civil engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry.

It was officially opened on June 30, 1894 by the Prince and Princess of Wales – the future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.

Now, Tower Bridge is recognised as one of the most famous bridges in the world, generating over £3m a year for the benefit of City Bridge Trust – a London-based organisation aiming to tackle disadvantage in the city through grantmaking, philanthropy, social investment and strategic initiatives.

Housed in the north and south towers that link the high-level Walkways high above the River Thames, visitors will be able to discover the fascinating stories from the lifetime of the bridge, from 1886

through to the present day.

Exhibition-goers will learn about how workers kept the bridge running, even when merchant ships collided with the bridge not once butthree times over the course of a decade.

Families with young children, aged between five and ten, will be able to explore the exhibition with the innovative Family Trail app as well as an activity packed booklet.

A commemorative bronze plaque will be placed in the South Tower as a tribute to the bravery of Samuel Friend Penny, who was head of the divers who risked

life and limb to dig the vast foundations that anchor the 70,000-ton weight of the Bridge to the bottom of the Thames.

There will be a chance to try on a replica of his helmet and discover what life felt like for a nineteenth century diver.

Additionally, following on-going historic research, the exhibition will feature never seen before archive footage and photographers of the faces of the workers as well as the bridge under construction.

Building upon the Bridge’s 2016 Sandford Award for Heritage Education,

the new educational content will also explore the extraordinary engineering feats achieved during construction, recounting the technical accomplishments of sinking the steel foundations into the riverbed through interactive displays and original objects from the past.

Dirk Bennett, Exhibition Development Manager at Tower Bridge, highlighted the integral role that human stories play in the exhibition, the second phase of in a three year plan to redevelop the Bridge’s interpretation.

“The redevelopment of the Bridge is the perfect celebration of the capital’s cultural heritage.

“It unites past and present London together with the special place Tower Bridge holds in the historical fabric of the city.”

Ecuadorian soup is a winner MIKO’S

YOU REALISE that the World Cup is about to start, you’re in the middle of the Elephant & Castle and you’ve got nothing planned to watch the first game, writes Michael Holland...

What could I do? I made a mad dash across the ‘roundabout’ system, zigzagging between cyclists and cars coming from all directions, and legged it into the shopping centre.

Once there I listened for the sweet sounds of football and was soon drawn to Miko’s by the double attraction of alluring aromas of good cooking and a large TV screen above the counter, writes Michael Holland.

Stepping in to Miko’s was like stepping into an old Clint Eastwood spaghetti western where the only one who speaks English is you. On the left hand wall a huge Ecuadorian flag hung proudly amongst South American artefacts. Ennio Morricone’s The Good, The Bad and The Ugly theme tune played in my head. Were those bullet holes? Did that bandido just order 3 coffins or coffees? I reached for my gun, then realised this wasn’t a film… Very soon I was surrounded. I felt naked.

‘Hola,’ I heard behind me. I turned to find a lovely, smiling face welcoming me. The young lady showed me to a table and offered me a menu.

‘Por favor, Madamoiselle,’ I replied, incorrectly using every foreign word I knew. She smiled again, but her eyes said, ‘Do what!’

All eyes were now on the big screen as the Russia v Saudi Arabia game kicked off. I ordered the seafood soup, house special(Sopa de Marisco), and a cold beer, then settled down to watch the game.

These were the lowest ranked teams in the competition so football skills were not high, hence my eyes were often drawn to plates of food going by in the hands of the waitresses.

Each one looked fresh, scrumptious and bountiful. They do not scrimp with measly nouvelle cuisine

servings here; Miko’s is all about wholesome and hearty and giving the customers what they want. And I wanted.

My meal came with a side order of rice, with fresh lemon to squeeze into the soup - A nice touch. The soup was in a huge bowl that small kids could have paddled in, so I set about it with a spoon and mucho gusto.

The match commentary was in Spanish and the excitable commentator made mere throw ons seem like amazing, overhead scissor kick match winners, and then when Russia scored their first he shouted GOOOAAALLLLLL!!! nonstop, without taking a breath until the Saudis restarted the game! I celebrated by biting into a lovely big

prawn.

The soup really had an abundance of seafood: squid, octopus, clams, prawns and the deeper down I got the more fish I found there. By half time I still had a couple of fathoms to go and I seemed to have more prawns than what I began with. Perhaps they were breeding! At one point I thought the Ninja Turtles had turned

up, but it was just three of the biggest half-shell mussels I had ever seen lurking at the bottom.

By the second Russian goal I had to give up. I could not finish the soup or all of the rice. But I polished off the Stella Artois, so I didn’t feel entirely ashamed.

Miko’s is a great find for me so I will be going back.

Member Allowances Scheme: 1 April 2018 – 31 March 2019

In accordance with the Local Authorities (Members’ Allowances) (England) Regulations 2003, Southwark Council is publishing details of the allowances to be paid to members for the financial year 1 April 2018 – 31 March 2019.

The current member allowances scheme was agreed at council assembly on 14 March 2018. The scheme was agreed having taken into account the London Councils Independent Remuneration Panel Report 2018. The scheme makes provision for a basic allowance to be paid to all members, and for special responsibility allowances (SRAs) to be paid to members who take on significant additional responsibilities. The scheme remains unchanged from that agreed for the financial year 2017-18.

Member allowances are adjusted in line with the national local government officer pay settlement and allowances for officers. A 2% increase was agreed in April 2018 and the figures set out in table 1 below reflect this increase. The allowances are grouped in bands, and the amounts for each band are set out in Table 1 below. The amounts listed are gross figures and are subject to deductions for national insurance contributions and income tax.

No member may receive more than one SRA. Members of the licensing sub-committee receive an allowance in recognition of the heavy workload of the sub-committee.

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that because of building works by Triton Building Restoration, it made an order the effect of which would prohibit vehicular traffic in part of the above named road.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable Thames Tideway works to be carried out, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to temporarily suspend and relocate sections of parking bays, introduce no waiting and Loading Restrictions, introduce one way traffic flows as indicated below.

Whilst the restriction is in place, and whilst the authorised traffic signs/road markings are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to wait, including waiting for the purpose of loading and unloading, at any time in Chambers Street as indicated in item (e) as detailed below.

Any vehicles having a maximum gross weight of 3 tonnes or more would be prohibited from entering in or proceeding in this section of highway at all times. There are no exceptions for emergency services vehicles as this is a structural weight restriction.

An alternative route for heavy vehicles is available via Grove Hill Road, Champion Park, Denmark Hill and Peckham Road, and vice versa.

MILLWALL LIONESSES are accepting applications for the position of head coach.

Lee Burch departed for Women’s Super League 1 side Yeovil this summer, while his assistant Lauren

Phillips also left.

The Lionesses are looking for a Uefa A licenced coach to build on the success of last season when Burch led the club to third in WSL2 and was named the best manager in the division.

He has moved into full-time coaching with professional top-tier club Yeovil.

“I’m really excited about my new challenge but obviously sad to leave a great club and a group of people I got to know really well,” he said after leaving Millwall.

SURREY’S JASON Roy starred as England made the highest one-day international total in history as they destroyed Australia by 242 runs to win the series at Trent Bridge this week.

Captain Eoin Morgan also hit 67, including a half-century off 21 balls, the fastest by an England player to become the country’s all-time top one-day international run-scorer.

“It’s as close as we've ever been to a perfect day,” Morgan said. “It’s as complete as performance as we’ve produced over the past three years.

“Everybody needs to be credited.

The level of intensity is something we haven’t reached before.

ENGLAND TEST stars Jimmy Anderson, Stewart Broad and Alistair Cook could all make an appearance for Surrey when they play West Indies A at the Oval from July 16-18.

All three are recovering from injuries and, due to lack of game time with their respective counties, Surrey’s friendly game will be the only opportunity for them to find form before England’s five-test series starts the following week.

The County Championship’s top two teams play each other this week at Guildford with top-ofthe-table Somerset visiting.

Surrey do not have a good record on this ground, and they will also be missing Jason Roy who is on England duty.

Meanwhile, South Africa international Theunis de Bruyn said it was a “privilege” to join Surrey after he arrived to replace injured India captain Virat Kohli.

De Bruyn, 25, will play against Somerset and Yorkshire this month in the County Championship.

“It’s a privilege to be here at Surrey, one of the great historic counties,” De Bruyn said this week. “It’s been nice to get here and already feel welcome, to be part of the Surrey family.

“It’s been lovely. The guys were practicing and it’s just nice to get into the nets. It’s good to get on the field and hit a few balls.”

Director of cricket Alec Stewart added: “With Jason Roy and Tom Curran involved in the current one-day series against Australia and Ben Foakes and Sam Curran representing England Lions, Theunis will provide vital reinforcement for our next two County Championship matches.”

Right-handed batsman de Bruyn will return to the South African Test squad ahead of their twomatch series with Sri Lanka beginning July 12.

Quick Sand finish as Dulwich fall to narrow loss

IN ANOTHER tense finish Dulwich narrowly failed to defend a total of 191 in their Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 2 match at Sanderstead last weekend, and went down to defeat by two wickets in the final over.

Dulwich chose to bat first, and faced a rapid but wayward opening attack, with the result that 48 runs came off the first nine overs, but for the loss of three wickets. Matt Marfani and Salaar Waqar steadied

the ship as the scoring rate slowed against the change bowlers.

The pair had added 49 in 15.3 overs when Waqar was unlucky to be bowled for thirteen when the ball rolled onto the stumps. Marfani went three overs later having made 58 off 82 balls, his first half-century for the club, with the score on 113.

A spirited knock of 23 in 35 balls

by Ed Hopkins, in company with George Pearson, then lifted the score to 145-6 after 34 overs. It was left to Pearson to shepherd the lower order to a total of 191 as he finished unbeaten with 31, off 56 balls.

Dulwich were dismissed in the 49th

over, leaving their opponents 51 overs to get the runs.

Dulwich struck back immediately as Assan Crawford-Khan took the first wicket in the second over without a run on the board. But the score then advanced rapidly as Shareef Hassan launched an assault on Jon Lodwick that saw 18 runs come off the next over. Sanderstead had reached 46 in the eighth over when Crawford-Khan took his second wicket. Lodwick got his revenge three overs later when he bowled Hassan. The opener had made 44, off only 31 balls, out of a total of 60-3. The pace men

subsequently gave way to left arm spinners Alex Gledhill and Patrick George, who slowed the scoring but took only one more wicket as the total advanced to 157-4 in the 43rd over.

By this time Lodwick had returned to the attack, and in an impressive second spell he bowled six overs for just thirteen runs, with a wicket in each of his last three overs, to finish with 4-51 off fourteen. A fine throw by skipper Ed Stolle led to a run out at the other end, as Sanderstead lost four wickets in five overs for eleven runs to decline to 168-8 after 47 overs.

With 24 needed off the last four overs, and 21 off the last three, the pressure was now on the batsmen.

But they proved equal to the task, taking seven runs off the 49th and thirteen off the 50th to level the scores. The victory came off the second ball of the last over.

Dulwich thus finished with just four points and remain in ninth place. This weekend they have a difficult match away to leaders Malden Wanderers.

NEIL HARRIS delivered perhaps the most devastating news to Alan Dunne in his career – but you won’t find the ex-Millwall defender has a bad word to say about his former team-mate.

Dunne, now a first-team coach with Bromley, was one of a group of players released early in the summer of 2015.

Harris, just weeks into the job and having to make the first major decisions as he rebuilt the squad, handed his friend a beer and said, “Dunney, it’s bad news.”

Harris told him Shaun Cummings would be his first choice at right-back and that the emergence of Sid Nelson meant there wouldn’t be opportunities to play in the centre of defence.

But Dunne can’t speak highly enough of Harris and the job Millwall’s record goal scorer has done since he took over.

“Neil was always a character, he was always a leader and professional in his job. He knew the game and worked hard every day in training and all those attributes feed into being a good manager.

“How quickly he’s done it and how well he’s done has surprised a lot of people.

But he’s got his head screwed on and he’s got a good team of people around him.

“He’s very good at creating a team spirit with lads who want to play for him and the club. They all want to play for the shirt and that’s half the battle nowadays. That’s one of Neil’s strengths.

“He plays the football the fans want to see: it’s direct at times, it’s in your face and it’s up tempo. That’s the Millwall way and I don’t think it could ever be any other way. That’s what the fans want.

“Neil and his staff sat down together and put together a plan to see how they could make the most out of that. It works and it hurts teams.

“With people like [Steve] Morison and [Lee] Gregory, [Jed] Wallace out wide, they play at a high tempo, get it forward quickly and they’re good at it.

“Next season teams are going to be more aware of it and they might not be able to worry them as much. That’s where you need games plans two and three.”

Harris guided Millwall to eighth last season in the Championship. Dunne and Harris were team-mates under Kenny Jackett in the Lions side that finished ninth in the second tier in 2010-11, before they dropped to sixteenth the following campaign.

Dunne thinks that even if they finish below where they did in 2017-18 it won’t necessarily mean they have regressed given how last season’s achievements were so unexpected.

“I think their home form will be strong again. It will be tough to improve again but it’s a great challenge, the Championship is a great league to be in,” Dunne said. “You’d prefer to be in that league challenging for top six or top eight rather than around the top of League One, that’s for sure.

“As a player what you’re thinking at the start of the season is you want to be the first name on the team sheet, you want to have your name on the shirt.

“But as a group they will have targets.

One is to improve on the previous season.

But then again they overachieved and if they finish twelfth next year I don’t think that will be a disappointing season.

“With a club like Millwall the first season back in the Championship was always going to be tough. So to finish where they finished and go on the run that they did [seventeen league games unbeaten] surprised everyone.

“It’s a club that when you get the momentum going and the fans behind you then The Den is always going to be a tough place to play for opponents.

“Neil has managed to create a great team spirit among the lads. There’s now great chemistry between fans and players and that was evident in the run towards the end of the season.

“The recruitment was very good and with Timmy [Cahill] coming in it was like the icing on the cake in terms of the help he gave.

“It was a fantastic achievement in a tough league with some big clubs and

players and a lot of money. They competed with most of the teams in the division so hats off to the club.

“Teams aren’t going to be surprised now, they’re going to be more wary of the threats and the dangers of Neil’s team.

You need to have other game plans. There won’t be a team that looks at Millwall and thinks, ‘we’ll roll these over’, because of what happened last season.

“Neil has some good players and I’m sure he will get some more in. The players have had a taste of success and when you’ve had that you want more of it.

“It’s still a young squad, it’s not like it’s a lot of old players and he’s got to flog them all. The young players have gained experience the last couple of years and know what it’s like to be in amongst the play-offs.”

Meanwhile, Dunne is hoping National League Bromley can build on their last two campaigns, when they achieved the

“Millwall fans respected someone who was going to put it in every two best league finishes in the club’s history.

He will go into management one day, but is happy to keep on gaining experience in his current role.

“I’ve had a year-and-a-half of coaching. In my first six months we finished the highest we had ever finished, tenth in the league, last year we finished the highest we’ve ever finished in ninth and got to the FA Trophy final.

“We’ve had eighteen months where it’s

ARE THESE the early signs of Second Season Syndrome already kicking in?

Certainly in recruitment terms it has not been as straightforward as last summer, when James Meredith and Tom Elliott quickly came through the door and Jed Wallace, George Saville and Conor McLaughlin followed a couple of weeks later.

There are just four days to the start of pre-season and at the time of writing there were no new faces at Calmont Road, though that could quickly change and the Lions were hopeful of concluding a deal for Scunthorpe defender Murray Wallace this week.

That’s not to suggest there should be panic just because there is potentially only one player in for the start of preseason preparations.

Some of Neil Harris’ most important signings arrived much later on in the summer: Steve Morison in 2015 joined four days before the opening day, and last year Jake Cooper and Ryan Tunnicliffe only completed their moves the week before the start of the campaign.

Both Morison and Cooper went straight into the starting line-ups for the opening game of the season but then again it was no surprise they settled quickly. Morison had played with Harris, knew Millwall and the club’s culture and what Harris expected of him as a striker in terms of style of play and leadership in the dressing room. Cooper had also spent time on loan with the Lions the previous season.

But for those players completely new to Millwall, there is little doubt the earlier they join the quicker their

integration into the culture and style of play and the better chance they will quickly be able to make positive contributions in games.

As well as another centre-back, Harris wants a goalkeeper, a left-back, a leftsided midfielder, a striker and potentially a central midfielder this summer. And that’s before any potential departures.

Harris has made no secret of wanting to sign Ben Marshall permanently from Wolves, who were promoted to the Premier League last season and have no place in their squad for the winger as they upgrade for the top tier.

But there has been little movement on

that front and after being the beneficiaries of Marshall’s good form on loan last season, Millwall are now the victims of that as he caught the eye of other clubs and Wolves also believe based on his performances they could get well over £1million for him.

Then there is the question of his wages, and he’s paid far more at Wolves than what Millwall’s top earner gets.

Millwall aren’t suddenly going to start smashing transfer records and wage structures just because they’ve spent one season in the Championship. They are still in a precarious position, one of those clubs that could get dragged into a

on the final day of the season with Aston Villa and it’s possible he could be back again if he links up with exChelsea team-mate Frank Lampard, newly installed at Derby County.

There is the intriguing prospect of Neil Harris pitting his tactical wits against new Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, one of the world’s most influential coaches whom the likes of Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino have cited as an inspiration in their careers.

There are plenty of other fixtures to whet the appetite: former England boss Steve McLaren is back in the game at QPR; Graham Potter, who took Swedish minnows Ostersund into the Europa League, has taken over at

Swansea; big guns West Brom and Stoke will be there to be shot at after relegation from the top tier.

Millwall have been at home on Boxing Day for three successive seasons under Harris, and they will hope that it’s fourth time lucky.

QPR were the visitors to The Den for a raucous occasion in the last fixture of 2017. At least one London derby over the Christmas period would make things easier, given there will be plenty of northern trips again over the next ten months.

Meanwhile, Millwall have been drawn against Gillingham in the first round of the EFL Cup. That fixture will take place the week commencing August 13.

That’s not a slight on them or Harris, it’s just a fact given their small budget and that clubs such as Nottingham Forest, to take just one example, who finished below the Lions last season, can splash a clubrecord £13million on a new signing from Benfica. That’s again what Millwall are up against.

Norwich will have over £20million burning a hole in their pocket from the sale of James Maddison, and they have reportedly entered the race for Marshall.

If it’s a financial head-to-head, there will only be one winner and Marshall will be a Canary rather than a Lion next season.

Harris isn’t going to panic or more importantly compromise on the type of player he wants to bring to the club. His mantra is building in ‘small steps’ and if that means waiting for the right players then that’s what he will do.

Harris was back at work the day after Millwall’s season ended on May 6, going to Glanford Park that week with head of recruitment Alex Aldridge to run the rule over Wallace when Scunthorpe faced Rotherham in the play-offs.

Harris has taken a couple of short breaks since but it’s not for the want of hard work or trying that there hasn’t been a flurry of incomings.

It’s the fans who are probably feeling the most frustration, twiddling their thumbs in that time between the end of one campaign and the start of the preseason friendly schedule, refreshing Millwall-related internet pages or picking up papers hoping for the buzz and excitement of a new signing.

Millwall will continue to bide their time. True, the permanent transfer window shuts earlier this summer, 5pm on August 9, but that makes little material difference. Clubs can simply arrange loan deals with a view to a permanent transfer that will then be completed the following January 1.

Breakthroughs can happen quickly and unexpectedly as targets make decisions.

The next unofficial deadline before when it is hoped the squad will have been added to is the departure for the training camp in Portugal in July.

That’s when players really bond and when game plans are worked on and perfected.

Millwall would like to have all their business done by then. But this is arguably the most important time of the year and the worst time to rush important decisions.

Expect the speculation, and probably the frustration, to last all the way until August 31.

Fixtures released as fans eye key dates and clashes

MILLWALL FANS can start tentative planning for next season when the 2018-19 Championship fixture list is released Thursday (June 21).

The campaign will kick off on the weekend of August 3-5 and finish on Saturday, May 4, 2019. The Premier League starts a week later.

Fans should bear in mind when making plans, however, that kick-off times will again be subject to change to accommodate TV coverage and also fixtures that might be deemed higher security risks.

There are several intriguing clashes for Lions fans to look forward to.

JORDAN ARCHER’S future at Millwall is secure – despite the Lions being on the hunt for a goalkeeper to add to their squad this transfer window.

While it has been relatively quiet on the transfer front up to now, that hasn’t been the case in the goalkeeping department where there have been changes and more are expected.

Millwall dispensed with the services of goalkeeping coach Kevin Pressman earlier this summer, appointing Lee Turner who worked with current England

World Cup squad member Nick Pope at Charlton Athletic.

The Lions released Harry Girling in May and currently have Archer, Dave Martin, Tom King and nineteen-year-old former England underage international Ryan Sandford on their books. The latter two could move on loan next season.

Turner will start working with the goalkeepers when the squad return to pre-season training next Monday, and it is hoped he can have the same kind of effect on Archer that he had on Pope, who had eight loan spells while with the Addicks before eventually winning a first-team place.

His form earned him a move to Premier League Burnley in 2016 and he deputised impressively for the injured Tom Heaton last season.

Turner also worked with Ben Amos when the stopper spent last season on loan at Charlton from Bolton. News understands Turner has recommended Amos to Lions boss Neil Harris, but the stopper earns £16,000 a week at Bolton. A loan deal has been mentioned, and Millwall would have to contribute significantly more to his wages than the £4,000 per week Charlton did last season.

Turner will assess his goalkeepers in the coming weeks, but the club’s wish to bring in a new netminder

could have cast doubt on Archer’s future. Millwall have been monitoring the situations of a number of goalkeepers in recent months.

Archer made a number of errors last season that led to goals, though he also showed his ability with some superb saves and eighteen clean sheets in 45 league games.

The News has been told by a source close to Archer that the goalkeeper will not be going anywhere this summer.

Instead, it is hoped the fresh ideas and coaching provided by Turner, as well as increased competition, will help Archer achieve more consistent form.

Romeo’s previous deal, signed last summer, was for two years with an option for the club to activate another twelve months.

But he has now signed completely new terms after impressing towards the end of last season when he regained his first-team place from Conor McLaughlin.

Romeo (below), who will be 23 in September, has played 89 senior competitive games for the club since making his debut in February 2016.

He was the first signing of Neil Harris’ time in charge.

Another defender, Nelson, was coming out of contract at the end of this month but reiterated his determination to make an impact on the first-team squad when he spoke to the News recently.

He spent last season on loan at Yeovil and Chesterfield, making a hugely positive impression with the latter despite being unable to help them avoid dropping out of the Football League.

Nelson, however, will still have some thinking to do about his immediate future at the club. Millwall were close to agreeing a deal for Scunthorpe centre-back Murray Wallace this week. Wallace, 25, a former Scotland under-21 international, would add competition in the centre of defence alongside Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper.

Byron Webster is also expected to stay, meaning Nelson would be fifth choice.

Nelson, 22, is open to another loan move next season.
