Southwark splashes out on nearly 2,000 Apple products in its bid reduce paper use - spending over £700,000 EXCLUSIVE

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has been accused of an “epic” waste of money after splashing out on nearly 2,000 Apple products for its staff and councillors.

The council bought 281 iPad Airs (128G); 999 iPhone 6s; and 700 iPhone SEs, according to a Freedom

of Information request by Liberal Democrat councillor James Barber.

On Apple’s website, the iPads were priced at £559 each; the iPhone 6s were £499 each, and iPhone SEs were priced at £265.

A Southwark Council spokeswoman this week confirmed the total spend at £722,659, but said the scheme would pay for itself within two years.

Developers need to get imaginative

LANS TO get rid of the ticket office at Southwark Tube Station and imminent dismantling of the red crane on Odessa Street, Rotherhithe, do make you question how imaginative modern architects and developers are.

Of course, it’s all about money. Build them high and rake in the cash.

Preserving our heritage is hardly going to overrule this policy, when the need properly to deal with our housing shortage comes secondary to the profits of the new super rich in London. But surely even the super rich have seen the mistakes of past developers and architects, who have demolished large parts of our heritage, only to see similar buildings and designs command huge price tags just years down the line?

If the Scotch Derrick crane, the last of its kind on London’s riverside and a relic from Rotherhithe’s shipping past, was somehow incorporated into the new development it would be a real selling point. And while the ticket hall at Southwark Tube is less than 20 years old it is unique. Each new part of the Jubilee line extension, built for the Millennium, was commissioned by a different designer. It’s a shame to get rid of it so quickly.

At least the town planners and developers in the post war era were destroying heritage for the sake of building council homes, rather than luxury pads that local people cannot afford.

Hidden history

T IS amazing when you find out that something you walked past daily and climbed over as a kid has such an interesting past – as is the case with our story this week on the calls to protect metal fences made from WW2 stretchers.

These ‘Stretcher fences’ used to carry wounded civilians in the war are dotted around London and loads must already have been dumped, with many of us not having any idea of the history behind them.

Well done to Peckham-based architect Benny O’Looney and conservationist Rosie Shaw for bringing this to the public attention. It’s also good to hear Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration committing to “preserve them where we can”, but it would be even better if Southwark led the way by getting some formal protection in place.

The expansion of the Southwark Resource Centre would be welcomed had the battle lines not already have been drawn to keep the two other day centres open. What’s more, while facilities for people with physical disabilities can help those with learning disabilities, it would be very wrong simply to lump the two together in order to save money.

Appeal to find family of WW2 airman shot down over Belgium, so book can recount human cost of war

BELGIAN ARMED forces are attempting to trace the relatives of a Walworth airman killed during World War Two.

Sgt Stanley George Coleman, a wireless operator-air gunner with the RAF, died aged 21 when his plane crash-landed in the Belgian countryside after coming under attack from German fighter aircrafts.

Frank Raeman, a chief warrant officer in the Belgian Ministry of Defence, is researching the lives of 154 airmen killed in Belgium during World War Two for a book about those buried in three cemeteries in the north-west of the country.

The book will not only give a military account of the soldiers’ deaths but will also tell the story of the men themselves.

Mr Raeman said: “We want to make sure that when people read about Sgt Coleman and the 153 other airmen who are buried there, we can show he was a human who lived, loved, had dreams and gave up his life for future generations.

Mr Raeman has been researching the 153 airmen since 1997 and has been searching in vain for Sgt Coleman’s family for ten years. Sgt Coleman is the only one from his

crew of four whose relatives have not yet been traced.

On June 10, 1943, Sgt Coleman was part of a group of six aircrafts which crossed the Belgian coast to attack a power station near Ghent. But over the target they met heavy German anti-aircraft fire and due to an

intercom failure the bombs were not dropped. As the bombers turned back they were attacked by 28 German fighter aircrafts.

Sgt Coleman’s aircraft was hit and crash-landed into a nearby meadow.

He lost his life along with his fellow crewmen, Jack Grindley, Edward

Sayer and Harold Webb. Their bodies were found by German soldiers from a nearby airfield and the following day the four crew members were buried with full military honours at the Maldegem Communal cemetery.

In 1997 a monument was unveiled at the cemetery honouring the seven airmen who lost their life at the village of Maldegem.

Mr Raeman said: “When we visited the cemeteries, we realised the generation who lived through the war had started to fade away. The most important thing is that those men will never be forgotten and that we continue to remember and honour them.”

Campaign to protect parts of Tube station in 30-storey skyscraper plan BLACKFRIARS

THE AWARD-winning Southwark Underground Station is under threat from plans to build a 30-storey skyscraper above it.

The Twentieth Century Society has condemned Transport for London’s plans, which could involve the demolition of the circular ticket hall and lobby to the rear to make way for 300 homes along with restaurants and shops. The tube station itself would remain.

The Society has launched a campaign to save the station from partial demolition after its application to have it listed was turned down on the advice of Historic England.

The decision was made on the basis that the parts of the station under threat, the ticket hall and lobby, were not considered individually to merit Grade II* listing. Buildings of less than 30-years-old generally cannot qualify for listing at a lower grade.

Tess Pinto, Conservation Adviser at the Society, said: “We strongly disagree with the judgement that the

ticket hall itself is not of a high enough calibre to warrant listing, but our major concern is to do with the way the decision was reached. If a building is under threat, it should be

assessed as a whole and that does not appear to have been done here – despite the fact the listing report explicitly states the station is a coherent and unified work of

architecture.”

The station was originally designed to carry an eleven storey building over the ticket hall, but this was never built and planning permission has since expired. The site currently houses disused office and empty space.

The circular ticket hall, which includes a 40m glass wall consisting of 660 pieces of blue glass, was designed by the late Sir Richard MacCormac as part of the Jubilee Line Extension of the late 1990s.

Graeme Craig, Director for Commercial Development at TfL said: “We are looking to develop the area above and surrounding Southwark Tube station and are in discussions with adjacent landowners to understand what kind of development would provide the greatest benefit to the area.

“Our proposals include a range of improvements to the station, including better and easier access for customers. Any changes would preserve and protect the iconic elements of the station and would sensitively consider the impact on the local area.”

Latin American fest back in Walworth WALWORTH: Carnaval Del Pueblo will give SE17 a burst of Latin American flavour this Saturday, as part of the annual Plaza Latina festival.

The festival, which this year will take place in Nursery Row Park and East Street Market, promises a celebration of music, food, art and culture, designed to bring London’s diverse communities together for a one-day free festival.

It will also feature dance, arts and crafts, and a variety of workshops in piñata-making and drumming.

Paraiso School of Samba, renowned performers from the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, will meet outside Elephant and Castle tube station to lead a colourful a parade down Walworth Road into East Street.

Nuala Riddell-Morales, director of the festival, said: “The entire team at Carnaval Del Pueblo has been working very hard for this year’s Plaza Latina festival, which is all about bringing the community together and celebrating the incredibly diverse and vibrant Latin American culture in Elephant and Castle.

“We’re particularly excited about the confirmed artists that will be performing, as well as the great mix of food and drinks vendors that are taking part. It’ll be a great day for Londoners.”

Police appeal after moped riders commit 7 robberies in two days ROTHERHITHE

POLICE HAVE urged victims and witnesses to come forward, following a spate of at least seven robberies in Rotherhithe by people on mopeds.

Five incidents focused around Greenland Dock were reported on July 24, with two more the following day reported in nearby Yeoman Street, and outside the Moby Dick pub in Russell Place.

One victim, Iuliana Zaporojan, told the News her phone was nicked at 3pm on July 24 as she left Tesco in Redriff Road.

Reports on Twitter suggested an elderly woman was robbed of her phone the following day in Yeoman Street.

No arrests have been confirmed.

Inspector Jim Cole told the News: “It would appear that all of these incidents were linked. There was a very similar description of the mopeds and their riders.

“The Surrey Quays area is one of our priority patrol areas, and there will be additional patrols there in the following weeks.

“We would welcome any new information, or video footage witnesses may have. Any other victims who would like to come forward can all us on 101.”

Detective Inspector David Rutter, who leads Southwark Police’s strategy on moped-enabled crime, said areas of SE1 and SE16 are the worst affected in the borough. This was due to the north of the borough having a high density of tourists, and with more situations where people leaving Tube stations making themselves more vulnerable by looking at their phones whilst wearing headphones.

He urged residents to be aware of their surroundings, and to provide information to local police wherever possible so that the force can act using local intelligence.

“It’s close to 2,000 Apple products.

It’s waste on an epic scale,” said Cllr Barber, of East Dulwich ward.

“We’ve all been forced to move from Blackberries, which you can now buy for about £20, and move to iPhones and iPads.

“Few FTSE 100 companies would spend this amount of money. I’ve

worked for a mobile company and we couldn’t afford to buy the latest Apple products, even when we were making profits like crazy.

“It’s a lot of extra money from the revenue account and from capital expenditure, and it’s on the false

promise that everyone will go completely paperless.”

But the council argued that the reduced spend on paper would save £28,000 per year, and have the environmental benefits of using less paper.

“As part of our plans to modernise

the council, improve services for residents, and increase data security, we are in the process of upgrading the technology used by staff and councillors,” said Cllr Fiona Colley, cabinet member for finance.

“We are replacing Blackberry handsets, which have become increasingly costly, unreliable and incompatible with a modern ways of working, with iPhones and iPads.

“The change will also bring wider cost-saving and environmental benefits as the council reduces its paper use.

“For instance we will save £28,000 per year by moving to paperless committees – this saving alone means that the replacement programme will pay for itself within two years. The change will bring Southwark in line with the majority of London boroughs where some staff and cabinet members are issued with smart phones and tablets as standard.”

Historic Coronet Theatre to stay open

Developers plan over 1,000 homes in Old Kent Road’s Ruby Triangle

PECKHAM: Developers plan to build more than 1,000 homes as part of a £520m scheme near Old Kent Road.

The site, known as the Ruby Triangle, will also include commercial space. OKR Regeneration, which started assembling the site three years ago, have now sold it to a pair of private developers.

Tom Pratt of OKR Regeneration said: “Using our experience, market knowledge and contacts within South East London, we began assembling the Ruby Triangle site in 2014. All through the process we have had a very close dialogue with the London Borough of Southwark to ensure that the site became an intrinsic part of the Old Kent Road Area Action Plan.

“The regeneration of the site will help to revitalise the Old Kent Road as a whole with mixed use neighbourhoods that provide housing, cultural and leisure facilities and high quality employment accommodation.”

The Old Kent Road Area Action Plan includes proposals to build 20,000 homes, two new Bakerloo Line tube stations and develop the high street.

OKR Regeneration has been involved in other schemes in Southwark including a nineteenstorey development on Rotherhithe New Road, the new home of a new City of London Academy sith form centre which opens in September 2017. The News has contacted the developers for further information but did not receive a response by the time of going to press.

THE CORONET Theatre has been allowed to stay open, after a review of its licence requested by police following a series of violent incidents.

But the historic New Kent Road venue, which is already scheduled to close on January 5, has agreed to a series of more strict conditions, after a decision was reached by Southwark Council’s Licencing Committee on Monday, July 31.

The review was ordered after an incident described as “a riot” happened in the early hours of Sunday, July 2, which forced managers to close and evacuate the venue.

The committee heard that on the night, some 200 or more people crowded outside the Coronet’s doors waiting up to two hours to be let in.

A solicitor representing the venue said missiles were thrown and violence broke out, after a group of “fifteen or 20 men tried to cause trouble, because

they didn’t want to queue like everyone else”.

Police also listed previous violent incident at the Coronet. On February 26 a “large group of males” broke in, one believed to be carrying a gun. On May 13 there were reports of 100 people fighting outside the Coronet.

Police statements also said fifteen violent incidents have been reported about the venue this year.

At the committee meeting, local residents, council officers and councillors agreed that they “didn’t want to see the Coronet close” and that a solution should be found.

The solicitor said: “No one wants the venue to close, but it’s going to close when its lease ends on January 5. What we’re asking is whether we should renew its licence for the last five months of its life.”

The Coronet will now have to reduce its capacity for late night events, stay open only until 12am, and hire more security.

But the committee’s final decision has still yet to be concluded. The News

understands there is disagreement over the wording of one condition: to effectively ban the venue hosting “urban” music events where Dancehall and Soca music was played, which the council’s licencing officers described

as “high risk”. A final agreement has not been reached on this condition at the time this newspaper went to press, but was expected by Friday.

During the meeting, two local residents said they had put up with

“noise, anti-social behaviour” and “illegal parking” outside their homes in Meadow Row and Rockingham Street “almost every weekend”. “I plan my life around these events at the Coronet,” said one resident.

The Coronet’s general manager Sam Porter told the committee that the violence on July 2 was due to “an exceptional number” of guests arriving very late, which disrupted the queuing system.

Sam said: “Guests arrived on masse and much later than expected.

“From speaking to people in the queue outside, I learnt that many guests have arrived late because they had travelled to the Coronet after a concert at the Apollo in Hammersmith.

Concerts at the Apollo usually finish at 11pm. It would have taken hour to travel to Elephant and Castle.”

The Coronet is due to be demolished in 2019 as part of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre redevelopment by developer Delancey.

Its final event will be on New Year’s Eve.

MILLWALL’S YOUNG supporters got the chance to get up close and personal with their heroes at the club’s open training session at The Den on Monday.

Several hundred Lions fans packed into the Barry Kitchener Stand and were addressed by boss Neil Harris before the squad – including the seven summer recruits – were put through their paces.

Players and staff were happy to sign autographs and pose for photos – and club mascots Zampa and Bolina also got in on the act, happily mingling with excited young fans.

“The kids are coming down, they’re off school and all happy,” Millwall defender Byron Webster said. “It’s good for them to meet the players, meet their heroes.

“It’s good for us as well. Usually it’s the dads who want the photos with us! But now we’ve got the kids here and they’re all smiling, the sun is shining, so it’s a very good day.”

Former pupil, aged 94, wants to identify classmates from Keetons Road School

A PUPIL at Keeton’s Road School in Bermondsey during the 1920s is appealing for help to identify her

classmates in a photo from around 1927.

The photo was taken on Empire Day and shows pupils dressed up to represent different British colonies. The school was later bombed during the

Blitz on September 7, 1940. It was being used as a rest centre following raids earlier in the day and 29 people were killed.

Mrs George (neé Boxall), who sent in the photo and now lives in Bexley, said:

“Some of those in the photo were probably in the Armed Forces themselves when the school was bombed. I lived in Drummond Road just behind my old school and although now 94 I can still remember the terrible

scenes as though it were yesterday.”

The school was eventually replaced by another, Scott Lidgett, then Southwark College. The sight is now used by Compass School and a construction training centre.

Tiny cat saved by RSPCA after being found in Camberwell street with its head stuck to a trap

THE RSPCA is appealing for information after a tiny kitten was found stuck by its head to a glue trap.

The collapsed four-week-old kitten was found by a member of the public who feared its mouth had been glued shut, in Camberwell on Saturday, July 22 The concerned finder had used olive oil to try and remove the cat from the trap. She was taken by RSPCA inspector Nick Wheelhouse to the organisation’s hospital in Putney, where she was found to be extremely hypothermic. She was bathed in warm solution to remove the remaining glue and to warm her up. As she is so young and suffering from hypothermia, the

RSPCA has been guarded about her prognosis.

She has now been named Dobby and moved to the RSPCA brand in Tunbridge Wells, where she will be hand reared..

Inspector Wheelhouse said: “What happened to Dobby is just another example of why we have concerns for the use of glue traps. These cruel traps are indiscriminate and cause unnecessary suffering to animals with everything from snakes, robins, owls and kittens. The public should be made aware of the risk these horrific devices pose to non-target species.

“Sadly, many animals, especially birds, have to be euthanised because the damage done is just too great. It is not a humane trap for any animal as they are not killed outright and have to undergo prolonged periods of distress

before they are then found and dispatched.

“Poor little Dobby is just another unnecessary victim of this cruel contraption which causes horrific suffering.”

The RSPCA is now asking the public to report details of any shops selling glue traps to the public. The traps are legal but should only be sold to trained operators, according to industry codes of practice.

The organisation has been running a Wild Animals and Glue Traps project for the past two years, asking people to contact them with details on shops selling traps to members of the public.

The RSPCA will then write to the retailer and ask them to consider stopping the sale of them.

A DRUG dealer who stabbed and kicked 24-year-old Ernest Kalawa from Peckham to death has been jailed for a minimum of 26 years.

Derron Campbell, 24, of Kidderminster Road, Croydon, was found guilty on July 27 of the murder of Ernest Kalawa (pictured), following a trial at the Old Bailey.

The court heard that Campbell attacked 24-year-old Mr Kalawa after chasing him through the Friary Estate in Peckham.

The murder happened at shortly before 5:30pm on December 30.

Ernest was walking in Frensham Road with a friend when Campbell arrived in a grey Vauxhall Astra.

Witnesses saw the car drive towards Ernest and his friend before it collided with a parked car. Campbell leapt out and began to chase the pair down Haymerle Road.

Mr Kalawa’s friend escaped, but he was pursued until he tripped whilst trying to jump a fence on a grassy patch of ground beside Deerhurst House.

Campbell pounced on Ernest, stabbing him a number of times before kicking his huddled body as he lay on the ground. He then ran off from the scene before getting back into a car and driving off.

The court heard from Judge John Bevan QC that Campbell “made a living by selling drugs” and that his intention “was to kill”, based on “the severity of the victim’s injuries”.

Police, London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended the scene and despite urgent medical care being administered, Mr Kalawa died where he lay at 6:30pm.

Campbell was subsequently arrested for a separate matter about six hours later. He was found to be in possession of the key to the car the witness had

described leaving the scene.

That car was subsequently found burnt out near Old Kent Road about 48 hours after the murder.

Enquiries established that Mangal and Campbell were known associates, and Mangal was arrested on January 11. When arrested, he had burn marks on his face and hands but claimed they were caused by a chip pan.

It was established that the Astra seen in Frensham Road on the day of the murder has been bought for £1,700 by Campbell, and Mangal was the registered keeper. Phone analysis also placed both suspects at the scene of the murder at the time it was carried out.

Mangal subsequently admitted to burning the car.

But Campbell and Mangal’s motive for the murder remains unknown.

Prosecutor Timothy Cray QC told the court the motive for the attack was unclear because one of the key witnesses was “not exactly forthcoming about the background”.

“There is a vacuum of information as to what it is all about,” said Mr Cray.

Klark Mangal, 22, of Nazareth Gardens, Peckham, was sentenced to four years in jail after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice, which related to a vehicle used at the murder scene. He was acquitted of the charge of murder.

Detective chief inspector Lee Watling of the Homicide and Major Crime Command led the investigation. He said: “Campbell has refused to say why they targeted Ernest that day in Peckham and, as such, only they know why they did this.

“The brutality of the violence used in this attack was truly shocking and there can be no doubt that as they pursued Ernest, Campbell only intent was to murder him.

“This process has been understandably traumatic for Ernest’s family and I hope this result can begin to allow them to bring this harrowing chapter to a close.”

ROTHERHITHE’S HISTORIC red crane will begin to be dismantled this week to make way for flats.

The development by Hollybrook Homes will provide 74 homes, including nineteen affordable, and will see the Scotch Derrick crane on Odessa Street recycled as a sculpture

by Surrey Docks Farm’s blacksmith Kevin Boys.

More than 360 signatures were gathered on a petition set up by residents to save the crane last year.

The crane was originally protected by a covenant with the Greater London Authority by The London Docklands Development Corporation in 1998 but it lost this safeguard in January 2014 under the direction of former London Mayor, Boris Johnson.

The crane is the last of its kind on London’s riverside and is a relic from Rotherhithe’s shipping past.

Mr Boys said: “I thought it was a great shame they were going to get rid of the crane as it is part of the area’s history. So I contacted the developers to see if they would be interested in having a sculpture made from it.

“Apart from keeping the crane itself it seemed like the next best thing. It would have been great to get it restored but it would have cost a lot.

Hopefully we have found a compromise which will keep some presence of the crane on the site.”

to the point it is a health and safety hazard. We are therefore proposing that the crane be dismantled and some of the material recycled to create a new public sculpture.”

homes, the development will remove a derelict nightclub and provide a missing section of the Thames River Path and a new café and restaurant.

The scheme will also provide financial support to improve the

visitor centre at nearby Surrey Docks Far and training apprenticeships for local people.

THE RE-OPENING of Carnegie Library - located just off Denmark Hill - has moved a step closer as Lambeth Council has chosen a partner to take community ownership of the building.

The Carnegie Community Trust (CCT) was judged by the council with “independent advice” to have submitted a stronger bid than rival organisation, Carnegie Library Association (CLA), which was formed by the Friends of Carnegie Library.

The CCT said it remained opposed to the idea of a gym in the library’s basement and had “serious concerns” about some of the additional alterations proposed by Lambeth Council and Greenwich Leisure Limited, who will manage the gym.

A statement continued: “Some of these are poorly thought out and would seriously damage this wonderful Grade 2 listed building. Now that the Trust is the Preferred Community Partner we will meet Lambeth and GLL to see if we can secure amendments to these proposals.

“We aim to ensure that the rental from the gym in the basement supports the community use of the rest of the building.”

Planning permission has already been approved for the excavation of the library’s basement to accommodate a gym. Contractors are due to begin work in the next few weeks.

The CLA, who submitted a rival bid, have said they will appeal the decision to name the CCT as the preferred community partner, citing a lack of evidence of CCT’s community engagement and capital funding for its plans.

Some Borough firms still to receive insurance payouts after being closed for 11 days

THREE BUSINESSES caught up in the London Bridge terror attack “fear closure” as a result of delayed payments from insurers, MP Neil Coyle has said.

Mr Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, accused the government of being “absent from support” while insurance providers “dragged their feet and denied help to some of the businesses worst affected”.

“Some payments are trickling through but the pace is unacceptably slow,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said some businesses feared that without adequate help they faced “the imminent threat of closure”, with mortgage payments at risk of being missed for traders who lost stock, bookings and access to crucial vehicles as a result of the attack.

Following the London Bridge attack on June 3, a police investigation meant Borough Market and surrounding businesses were cordoned off and closed for 11 days.

Market traders and businesses in the area were left in limbo for weeks because insurance providers were unable to pay out until the Treasury officially classified the attack as terrorism on June 28.

Last month Business Minister Margot James vowed to “call in” any insurance providers yet to pay out to traders who suffered losses after the terror attack.

Mr Coyle also said the government approach to terrorism insurance was “based on an outdated model”, covering attacks targeting infrastructure but not vehicle, knife and cyber-attacks.

A Treasury spokesperson said: “We are committed to ensuring that businesses can protect themselves against disruption caused by terrorism.

There is nothing in law that prevents

insurers from providing cover for other types of terrorism risks, for example where no physical damage occurs. However, we understand that these policies are not commonly offered or bought. We are in active discussions with Pool Re and other interested parties to look at all the possible options to close the insurance gap.”

Theresa May joined Australia’s Prime Minister during a visit to Borough Market at the start of July.

The pair met with first responders and traders during the visit, accompanied by MP Coyle and Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick.

Calls to protect fences once used as stretchers in WW2

LOCAL HISTORIANS are calling for councils to protect metal fences made from WW2 stretchers once used to help thousands of wounded civilians.

‘Stretcher fences’ are found dotted around London, but their history is unknown to many. Some still have the body shapes in them made by the injured people they were used to carry, a historian has told the News.

Local historians are now trying to raise awareness of the fences’ hidden history after a set of the stretcher fences were removed from outside the East Dulwich Estate in Dog Kennel Hill.

Peckham-based architect Benny O’Looney said: “You can see how the wire frames often have these imprints, and are a bit concave, so they look a bit damaged. But these are actually where people’s body shapes have left a mark in them. You can see where people’s shoulders and hips would have been.

“I like the poetic thing about it, where you can see the ghostly shapes in the frames – of people who have

been dead for decades but their imprint lives on in the streetscape,” the 52-year-old said.

Architectural conservationist Rosie Shaw, 33, said: “They’re a really good physical symbol of the war in London. They are a visible, observable reminder. I think showing people that is really important. The only other reminders like this that you can think of are places where there’s shrapnel in walls.”

Some 600,000 were made for use across the UK. And with a surplus of

them after the war, many were ingeniously used outside new housing estates after they fell out of use by Civil Defence in 1962.

Southwark’s most prominent stretch of the stretcher railings is now along Peckham Road and Camberwell Church Street (pictured). But they can also be found outside the Oval Cricket Ground, as well as in Brookmill Road and Watergate Street in Deptford.

They are appealing for a local councils to get the few remaining sites listed, or for new planning regulations to call for their protection. Rosie added: “It would be nice to get stories from local people who must remember them being put in. People must have memories of them.”

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for

regeneration and new homes, said: “Although there is no formal protection in place for these unusual forms of fencing, they do form a fascinating piece of local history, which is why the council works to preserve them where we can. On the East Dulwich Estate for example, as part of improvement works, we have removed fencing where it was in a very poor state due to extensive rusting and disintegration, but have preserved four of the fences outside Badminton House.”

FAMILIES OF adults with learning disabilities have questioned proposals by Southwark Council for a ‘disabilities hub’ on Walworth Road.

The hub would provide information, support and structured day services at the Southwark Resource Centre, which currently offers services for adults with physical disabilities. The proposals involve expanding the centre to also serve adults with learning disabilities, including those who use Queen’s Road Day Centre in Peckham, which is due to close following the end of its lease earlier this year.

Families of users of Riverside Day Centre in Bermondsey say they are also being encouraged to use the hub in the future. The council is currently working with the Camden Society, who run both centres, to renew the lease at Riverside Day Centre in Bermondsey, which was also threatened with closure earlier this year.

Norma Lawrence, whose daughter Dawn has used Riverside for 25 years, expressed concerns about the suitability of Southwark Resource Centre.

She said: “The building is like a fish bowl. It might be suitable for people that use it at the moment but isn’t suitable for people with learning disabilities. A lot of people who use Riverside have challenging behaviour and they need privacy.”

She also questioned why relatives and carers were not invited to meetings discussing the hub.

“The first a lot people heard about it was when they were sent a consultation document. Most people don’t even know where the hub is or what it does so how can they know if it’s suitable?”

Gemma Cooper, who co-chairs the Parent and Carers’ Association for Riverside and Queen’s Road, said she and her fellow co-chair, Sinem

Quashie, were the only family members invited to a consultation meeting discussing the hub.

She said: “Southwark Council have no idea what they want this hub to be.

They have no clear vision. The Walworth Road site they are proposing is not adequate for people with learning disabilities. It currently only has space for 100 people and Queens Road and Riverside have 160 users.”

She also raised concerns about the security of the building, where users can enter and leave freely.

Cllr Anood Al-Samerai, leader of Southwark Lib Dems, called the consultation a “sham”.

“The council are asking what people want but assuming Queens Road Day Centre will close. The users of Queens Road want to stay at that centre. The consultation should also give the option of keeping it open and listen to the public’s response,” she said.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Care and Financial Inclusion, said: “We welcome the involvement of those who may be affected in this consultation period and have actively sought their involvement at every stage of this process. We have also held a number of meetings at the centres to reach those directly affected and we have sent out letters to try and reach as many people as possible.

“Due to the fact that Southwark Resource Centre has been specially designed and built to accommodate the needs of disabled people, there is potential to offer a wide range of services and support to people with both physical and learning disabilities. We are aiming to provide improved facilities that recognise the needs of the individual, while still being cost effective.”

A public consultation on the proposals closes on August 7.

DETECTIVES HAVE offered a £20,000 reward to anyone who can provide video footage of the fatal stabbing of father-of-three, Bilal Kargbo, in Peckham.

Mr Kargbo, 26, lived in Borough and worked in a phone shop in Rye Lane.

He died in Blenheim Grove after receiving two fatal stab wounds during a fight on April 28, at 3:15pm, that was watched by a crowd of “60 to 70” onlookers.

A statement from the Met called on any witnesses who had filmed the incident to share their evidence, and receive the £20,000 reward if their evidence helps contribute to securing a conviction.

Mr Kargbo’s family have also released a statement, which reads: “Please think of the trauma and hurt caused to our family. Bilal has left behind three lovely children who deserve justice.

"Our family is absolutely devastated with Bilal’s loss; he was a wonderful father, partner, son and friend. Bilal meant so much to us and it is heartbreaking to know that we will never see or speak to him again.

“It is hard to put into words the suffering that this has caused our family and it will take a long time for us to come to terms with what has happened."

Detective inspector Jason Grafham, who is leading the investigation for the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "Our enquiries have led us to believe that a large crowd gathered around the altercation Bilal was stabbed during; a crowd of around 60 to 70 people.

"Crucial to our investigation, the enquiry team believe a number of people recorded the attack on their mobile devices. Therefore we are now offering a reward of up to £20,000 for video footage that would assist and ultimately lead to the conviction of the person(s) responsible.

"I would urge anyone that hasn't spoken to police to contact our incident room as soon as possible."

Day centre scoops £10k to turn car park into garden

RIVERSIDE DAY Centre in Bermondsey has scooped £10,000 from the Mayor of London to transform its car park into a garden and art studio for people with learning disabilities.

The centre beat 150 other competitors to make it to the final 25 who pitched to the Mayor at City Hall on July 25.

The Camden Society, who run the

day centre, said because of the imminent closure of its sister centre in Queen’s Road, Peckham, it needs to make space for more users at Riverside. The charity plan to build raised accessible flower beds where they can teach gardening and grow food to be served in the kitchen, with some beds made available to the local community. They also hope to raise funds for an art studio for users of the day centre as well as other community groups.

executive, Denise Largin, said: "This pledge from the Mayor is a real boost to our plans to turn an ugly car park into a beautiful and exciting space for people with a learning disability to use. But we do need the public to get behind us so that we can reach our £16,000 target and make the dream a reality. So please donate if you can.”

by Paul Sng, whose mum grew up on the Elmington Estate in Camberwell, and narrated by Maxine Peake. The film is screening in London throughout August including at the Ritzy in Brixton, Hackney Picturehouse and Picturehouse Central in Piccadilly Circus.

Health award

SOUTHWARK: The borough’s Healthwatch team scooped a national award earlier this month for its work improving people’s experiences when leaving hospital.

Healthwatch Southwark and Lambeth won the Local Healthwatch Working Together category at the national Healthwatch Network Awards on 6 July.

Their project, Going Home, tracked patients for up to three months after they were discharged to see if they were getting the care they needed.

Healthwatch is an independent champion for patients, which aims to ensure the public’s views on health and social care services are heard.

SOUTHWARK’S YOUNG athlete’s have celebrated their performances at this year’s London Youth Games with a party thrown by the council.

Team Southwark finished 11th out of the 33 teams from each London borough, whilst bringing home gold medals in BMXing and parafootball from events in 26 sports.

by Michael Pusey MBE (AKA CK Flash), the founder of Peckham BMX Club in Burgess Park.

Silver medals were earned in road cycling and male hockey. The men’s basketball and football teams finished third.

Southwark Council and Southwark mayor Charlie Smith held a celebration event in Tooley Street on July 13, where they thanked volunteers, coaches and over 80 of Team Southwark’s young athletes and their families.

A DRUG dealer who was in possession of a gun linked to two Southwark murders has been jailed after being on the run for three years.

Andre Chambers, 34, of Harlinger Street, Woolwich, was sentenced to ten years for possession of a firearm and intent to supply Class A drugs, after pleading guilty to charges at Croydon Crown Court on July 28.

In September 2013 police found a 9mm Glock handgun hidden in a shopping bag under the sofa in a property in Southwark where Chambers was living.

As the search continued in the bedroom, officers found 385 grams of cocaine on top of a chest of drawers and another 5.4 grams behind it.

Nearly half a kilo of high purity cocaine was then found in a laundry bag inside the wardrobe along with a carrier bag containing 35 grams of crack cocaine.

Chambers was not at the address at the time of the search in 2013 and evaded capture for three years. In 2015 a £20,000 reward was offered for information on his whereabouts.

He was finally arrested in October 2016 when he was stopped by police in a mini cab near Woolwich Ferry.

When asked to verify his identity, Chambers provided police with an alias but officers were satisfied they had found the man connected with the gun and drugs found at the Southwark address.

En route to a south London police station Chambers told the arresting officer, “Well done, good job” as he confessed his true identity.

Forensic tests revealed the gun found at the Southwark address was used to murder 24-year-old Errol Davis, who was shot in front of 2,500 clubbers at SEOne nightclub near London Bridge in 2008. It was also linked to the

murder of 25-year-old Larry Safie in East Dulwich in 2009.

The gun was also found to be used in two attempted murders, one in 2007 in Station Rise, West Norwood, where the victim was shot five times, and another in Welland House, Peckham Rye, in 2009.

A man was arrested and charged in connection with the murders of Larry Safie and Errol Davis but was acquitted following a trial. Enquiries continue into these two investigations, the Met said.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL have been labelled “bullies” after banning a Family Fun Day organised by residents who oppose plans to demolish the Aylesbury Estate.

The Aylesbury Estate Family Fun Day event was due to take place on Saturday in the Thurlow Lodge Community Hall.

The afternoon promised a BBQ and kids’ face painting, as well as performances by singers and rappers.

But the event was pulled after a letter was received a few days before from the council, in which it said that letting the event go ahead “may lead to invasion and illegal occupation of the hall by demonstrators”.

It prompted a disheartened response by organiser, Beverley Robinson, who said: “Southwark are bullies. We were trying to organise a community focused event

for people who live here, when there aren’t many that happen on this estate anymore.

“We’re trying to engage the community. It’s a community hall where people have events like this all the time, and we’re trying to save the community,” said Beverley – one of six leaseholders fighting the council’s attempts to compulsorily purchase their flats.

Southwark Council responded saying the event could not go ahead because an application for an “entertainment licence” was made too late. No further comment was made about the authority’s suggestion that an illegal occupation could have happened.

“We have stated that we would be happy to work with the community to help arrange a future event and make sure the correct licences are in place.”

The Coal Rooms will occupy the Grade II listed office, previously used in 1930s, with a 24-seater café with open-plan kitchen, which will transform into an evening bar.

Behind the project are two locals, Jamal Ahman and Richard Robinson, the co-owners of Aside restaurant in Goldsmith Road; Spike + Earl in the former Town Hall building in Peckham Road; and the Old Spike Roastery in Pekcham Rye. A menu centered on cooking fish and meat-heavy dishes with coal ovens and Robata grills, which are typically used in Japanese cuisine.

The Coal Rooms has been refurbished by Peckham architects Kennedy Woods, who collaborated with the Peckham Society’s Benny O’Looney – the man restoring the station’s façade and Victorian topfloor Waiting Room.

Its soft launch will take place on Monday, August 14.

‘Outstanding’ hospital school celebrates children’s art

EVELINA HOSPITAL School hosted an art exhibition in July to celebrate the creativity of their pupils. After studying artists such as Van Gogh, Matisse and Klimt in their classes, pupils aged 2-19 created their own masterpieces.

Artworks based on the theme ‘The World Around Us’ showcased various techniques including collage, painting, hand prints, crayon resist and computer imaging.

25 year Burgess battle HIS YEAR marks my 25th anniversary of working with Southwark News on environmental issues that affect the borough.

My first campaign was against a proposal

by Southwark Council to build on the New Church Road Wildlife site in Burgess Park and to remove the open space protection for the entire park.

Since then, Southwark tried 50 times to build on or sell off bits of the park.

With the help of the News, almost every single one of those battles was won.

But having failed to build on it, the current Director of Planning Simon Bevan is determined to destroy it by imprisoning it behind a continuous wall of skyscrapers, extending up to 50 storeys!!

Last month we wrote how Cllr Williams ) is proposing to abolish the borough’s democratic planning system, by abolishing all tower-block height restrictions and requiring all new developments to include as many homes as possible.

Bevan is now using the new Southwark Plan to enable off-shore developers to build their biggest 50 storey tower-blocks around Burgess Park.

He is proposing a new policy encouraging the tallest buildings to be built adjacent to “significant locations”, with no definition provided. This is a legal blank-cheque for developers.

But he does quote one example to illustrate what such a “significant location” would be. Yes, you guessed it. It is Burgess Park.

Southwark Councillors need to wake up to the immensely destructive community and democratic implications of what Williams/Bevan are proposing.

It hands Southwark’s planning system over to developers, lock, stock and barrel.

No more will local councillors have any decent legal grounds to oppose almost ANY developments in their communities.

It also means permanent over-shadowing and wind-tunnels for Burgess Park, destroying its human amenity and wildlife value.

Harriet Harman MP failed to reply to this column’s inquiry. But she is on record refusing to “second guess” unelected planning officers.

It seems to be ok for her constituency to be bulldozed for off-shore owned Singapore style tower-blocks, whilst she also supports having a quarter of a million more flights to Heathrow roaring over our heads.

Southwark New Labour must not be allowed to destroy our quality of life.

They do not even respond to people reporting burglaries, but waste resources hunting down the threats to society from Wembley! Get real!!!!

Figures released recently give an idea of why so many fair minded people migration into Britain needs to be controlled. There are now 255,000 east European children living in Britain and around 1.2 million adults.

This has placed enormous pressure on our housing, schools, transport and the NHS, but Britain will soon be a sovereign nation, with our own basic immigration controls and residency requirements.

The British people voted in the referendum (17.4 million), to take back control of bordersand this is what our negotiators must do.

With annual net migration still running at around 280,000, one wonders how much longer our public services will be able to cope?

With their stance at this first hurdle, it appears that Brussels is determined to make every decision a ‘hard Brexit’.

Don’t cull the gull

So what happened to the promise of grown-up dialogue with the European Parliament over the terms of Brexit?

All EU nationals resident here for five years or more would be entitled to ‘settle status’ and be able to bring over spouses and children. All entitlements to work, study and receive health and welfare benefits would remain unchanged. Those who have been here for a shorter time would be allowed to stay as now and then apply for settled status after five years.

Yet the EU chief negotiator Guy VerHofstadt, claims indignantly this is ‘second class’ citizenship, writing a letter to newspapers branding the proposal “a damp squid” and threatening to hold up the negotiating process by rejecting it.

What this lot in Brussels seem unable to grasp is that while Britain is absolutely committed to playing fair

by EU nationals living here, free movement and unconditional residency will soon be over.

The holiday period coincides with the birds' breeding season and, being such fierce defenders of their offspring, the birds may occasionally become aggressive in order to see off any perceived threat to their nest and children. To cull wild animals for protecting their babies is nothing short of ludicrous.

Despite this, if gulls are causing issues, there are a number of effective, humane methods of deterrence that can be used to discourage birds from nesting on flat roofs or chimneys, or from rummaging in our rubbish.

Animal Aid has free advice sheets that detail the number of humane, nonlethal methods of deterrence available.

In any case, we should show tolerance to these birds, not least because they are just being good parents, and six of the seven gull species are in decline.

We at SPAG (Southwark Pensioners Action Group), welcome extra funding for mental health patients!

We have a huge problem in Southwark and Lambeth despite some sterling work done by our local MP Helen Hayes! You need to get involved personally to right the wrongdoing for our mental health patients in Southwark and Lambeth!

SLAM (South London and Maudsley), closed their A &E at the Maudsley hospital several years ago, despite historicaly defying the government at that time, that they can only close the Maudsley A&E when Kings College Hospital opposite, have a unit in place that is fit for purpose for mental health patients. This never happened!

We now have a situation where the busy Kings A &E has to cope with often 400 mental health patients a month! And most wards in Kings are shared by physically and mental health patients, which is unfair to both sets of patients and very difficult for the nursing staff!

We think there is a simple solution.

The SCCG (Southwark Clinical Commission Group), should have the funds to commission SLAM, who are renowned as the world experts on mental health, to reopen the Maudsley A &E which legally should never have been closed anyway!

I would also remind you that the CQC (Care Quality Commission). have stated that a busy A &E is not the right environment for mental health patients!

The acid test is for you to stand on the pavement outside the Maudsley, imagine you are feeling suicidal, look across the road at Kings A&E, with police cars, ambulances and sirens going off, would you cross the road to Kings A &E? This also applies to children with mental health issues!

King’s need funding

ING’S COLLEGE Hospital holds a special place in my heart – my mum worked there as an occupational therapist, both of my daughters were born there, I’ve had surgery there myself and as a family we’ve had to visit Accident and Emergency on a number of occasions.

Staff at King’s have recently looked after patients from both the Westminster and Borough Market terror attacks, as well as victims of the recent Grenfell Tower fire. On every occasion they have demonstrated calm professionalism and care and risen to the substantial challenges.

I recently visited some of the new mental health rooms in Accident and Emergency and looked at the much delayed new entrance to Accident and Emergency. Further works are underway over the coming months and I am looking forward to the time when the new arrangements come into place.

The Lib Dem-Tory coalition government substantially underfunded King’s, which led to the Care Quality Commission judging the Trust as Requiring Improvement a few years ago. Now there has been a reinspection of the Trust and although there were improvements noted in a number of service areas the Trust is still ranked as Requiring Improvement.

Perversely the current Tory government has decided that despite King’s financial difficulties it will not give any additional funds to the hospital because it hasn’t managed to meet its targets. Of course the reason that King’s hasn’t managed to meet its targets is because of its financial difficulties. Other hospitals in less financially precarious situations have been given more money!

I will be raising this issue in the House of Commons with the government when Parliament resumes after the summer break.

The opening number, Song of the Hired Men, was sung with gusto and the choreography energetic. In fact, throughout this whole piece Charlotte Tooth’s choreography was splendid.

The Hired Man follows the life of John Tallentire (Ifan Gwilym-Jones) and his wife Emily (Rebecca Gilliland) and the ups and downs of love, life and trying to earn a living in Cumbria at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The first act is occasionally melodramatic, however, the pace is maintained and the large ensemble cast keep you busy. As John continues to work the land, one brother, Seth (Johnathan Carlton), works the mines, and another, the lively and cheeky Isaac (Sam Peggs), tries to avoid work as much as possible by gambling and fox hunting. Persuading John to join him one night the love triangle between John, Emily and Jackson Pennington (Luke Kelly) begins when Jackson makes his move on Emily.

The second act bounces into action in 1914 with the same force and energy we had become used to. The Tallentires are back with children, May (Kara Taylor Alberts) and the cute Harry (Jack McNeill).

We are introduced to the unions and the struggle for workers’ rights in the mines with the rousing The Union Song/Men of Stone led by Seth.

The heartrending rendition of The Farewell Song, where the choreography and singing bought a tear even to my sceptical eye, was so poignant – not over egged, just

honest and true.

I found the second act earthy and emotional, and I’m grateful that I didn’t let the melodrama put me off a great night. There is a twist at the end which I refuse to reveal.

A passionate performance from all the cast – well done for not knocking one another out in the bigger dance scenes! The band, as per usual,

back from the war through the auditorium on simulated horses and wearing stilts, a brilliant and effective piece of design. As the principles are introduced and the plot gets underway, the mating rituals are presented with a wonderful and colourful dance scene of carnival flamboyance and intensity. This was the Globe at its best.

The acting is consistently good and often very good with Matthew Needham

as Benedick standing out throughout. He was well matched by Beatriz Romilly who played this gift of a part with aplomb. They were very ably supported by the whole company whose energy never flagged in this most physically demanding production. The exception here was Steve John Shepherd who gave the most laid-back Don Pedro I have ever seen! Very attractive!

Action was also moved to the centre of the pit at times. Juana and Bassano hatch the plot to entrap Hero there, cleverly moving Juana even farther to the edge of the community. Good too to put the scenes at the mock grave of Hero there, firstly as Leonato dramatically struggles back and forth from below stage with stones and a cross and then when Claudio sings as the light in the auditorium fades.

Anna Fleischer’s designs are ingenious and James Maloney’s music a delight.

The action can fit well a post war situation anywhere but the aggressive battle song with which the production concluded was not led up to in any way.

The filmic subplot was a clever modernising technique, and very funny, but went on a bit too long, as did the scene between the “mounted” Don Pedro and Claudio talking to Leonato in the second act where what had been impressive when first seen became tedious as they manoeuvred about the stage. But it is a very clever and ingenious reworking of the play and overall, the audience left happy and the performance was roundly applauded.

Much Ado About Nothing is on at Shakespeare’s Globe until October 15th at 7.30pm with Friday & Sunday matinees.

‘Best breakfast in Brixton’ THE DUCK EGG AT POW

PECKHAM BOY Mustapha Ertan calls himself a born and bred in south London TurkishCypriot cockney, and he specialises in providing “the best breakfast in Brixton” writes Michael Holland...

Mustapha takes great pride in his background and in his cooking, which are plus points, as he is the man behind Duck Egg, his brainchild that is currently based in the Prince of Wales.

I was brunching with the News’ Michelle G who has the impressive title of Print and Digital Consultant as well as an impressive knowledge of food.

Before we began our midafternoon meal Mustapha gave us the rundown on how he sources all his produce to ensure he gets the best quality. His vegetables come from the oldest trader in Brixton Market, Terry, who has held out while all others were moved aside by change; and meats from the butcher who also survived the famous market’s controversial transition. The free range duck eggs, with which Mustapha has cut out his own niche in SW9, come from Norfolk.

While we chatted, a round of drinks was in order. Michelle went for a Rum and Ting, a powerful concoction that I thought could get rockets on the moon, and I had a VPA, a good pale ale with citrus notes. After a while we agreed that Mustapha would cook me a couple of dishes so I could sample a selection, and a Jerk Chicken Salad ‘with extra avocado’ for my colleague.

The Prince of Wales is a big pub.

So big it has a nightclub upstairs, plus a secret bar and a roof terrace.

So big it has a door in Brixton Road and a main entrance in Coldharbour Lane! It gets extremely busy at weekends but on this Wednesday afternoon it was quite calm.

Our food arrived. The salad looked very chunky and very fresh, and a simple dressing of red wine vinegar and olive oil took it to another level. Michelle said the chicken could have been a little spicier so the Peckham boy

promised to add a couple more Scotch Bonnets to the next Jerk mix.

My surprise dish was Eggs Benedict, with Smoked Bacon ('Smoked is better for flavour and for cooking’), and Eggs Royale, with Scottish Smoked Salmon. As I tucked in Mustapha was telling me

how he makes the Hollandaise Sauce, and how he poaches the duck eggs in white wine vinegar, and the running commentary made the whole eating experience a little bit more special. And, of course, there is the ritual of cutting gently into the egg to let the yolk ooze out, which was a winner too. Using top

quality produce is reflected in the taste.

Duck Egg @POW provides an excellent breakfast and brunch under the guidance of Mustapha Ertan, and in the coming weeks he will be serving up authentic Thai food on selected evenings, so watch out for that.

Coat and badge winners 1901

he Doggett’s Coat and Badge Wager is the oldest rowing race in the world, writes Michael Holland...

The Coat and Badge is the prize for the race where up to six apprentice watermen compete for this prestigious honour.

The contest from London Bridge to Chelsea, between two riverside pubs both named ‘The Swan’, has been held every year since 1715 (except during wartime, although the missing races were contested after peace broke out) and is a favourite annual spectacle for Londoners.

Thomas Doggett was an actor from Dublin who moved to London in 1690 to further his career. He was associated with the Drury Lane Theatre as a comanager and played mainly comedy roles up to 1713 when he retired, supposedly with a fortune.

The actor relied heavily upon the watermen of the Thames, who were then the equivalent of the modern taxi driver, to convey him between his workplaces and his home in Chelsea. There is a legend that Doggett was rescued by a waterman after falling overboard whilst crossing the Thames near Embankment. Although this has always been dismissed, along with other myths, the story continues that in gratitude for his rescue, he offered a rowing wager to the fastest of six young apprentice watermen in their first year of freedom.

What is fact is that, to celebrate the accession of the House of Hanover (George I – formerly Duke of Brunswick) to the throne of England in 1715, Doggett founded the Brunswick Coat and Badge Wager. The first race took place on accession day, 1st August 1715, and the first winner was John Opey, a waterman from St.Saviour's Dock, Bermondsey.

Winning the Coat and Badge in the 18th and 19th centuries would help attract more trade to the talented waterman.

Doggett deemed that the coat in

the esteemed prize had to be orange in colour, as this was the colour of Protestant Europe, the colour of the Hanovers and the colour of the Whig political party that he was a member of; the silver badge displays the winner’s name, the horse of the House of Hanover and the word ‘Liberty’. There was this report in the Daily Courant on August 1st, 1716: ‘This being the day of His Majesty’s happy accession to the throne, there will be given by Mr. Doggett an orange colour livery, with a badge representing Liberty,

to be rowed for by six watermen, that were out of their time within the year past. They are to row from London Bridge to Chelsea, and will be continued annually upon the same day for ever.’

The colour of the prized coat changed to red in the early 1900s to match the colour of Royal Watermen on official duty. The race, today known as the Doggett’s Coat and Badge Wager, was managed by the erstwhile actor up to his death in 1721. Alas, according to a plaque on his Eltham grave, he died a pauper,

having lost his money in the South Sea Company. On Doggett’s death a small sum was left to a Mr Burt of the Admiralty Office with instructions to manage the race. Mr Burt felt unwilling to accept this task and the trusteeship of the race was passed to the Fishmongers’ Company who since 1722 have organised the race in accordance with Doggett’s instructions.

Originally it was raced against the tide in the boats used by watermen to ferry passengers across the Thames. Today it is raced at a date and time in late July that coincides with the incoming tide in contemporary single sculling boats. In the modern race, each competitor to complete the course receives a miniature of a Doggett's Badge for their lapel in a ceremony at Watermen's Hall, in silver for the winner and in bronze for the others. Monetary prizes are also made by the Fishmongers' Company to the rowing clubs of those taking part, with £250 to the winner's club, £150 for second, £100 for third and £50 for fourth.

In addition to the prizes received, winning the Doggett's Coat and Badge is a respected achievement.

The 2017 race was won by more than ten lengths by Jack Keech, the 6th winner in his family and the 303rd winner of Doggett’s Coat & Badge Wager. He now hopes to row for England in the next Olympics.

If you are familiar with AutoCAD and MicroStation, it’s a bonus, although this is not essential.

Neighbourhood planning was introduced under the Localism Act 2011 to give members of the community a more hands on role in the planning of their neighbourhoods. It is a process that is led by the community and supported by the council.

The council has been supporting a group of residents, businesses and community groups who have come together to prepare a neighbourhood plan for the Herne Hill area of Southwark and the adjoining London borough of Lambeth. A neighbourhood plan can set neighbourhood-level planning policies for the area on issues like housing, heritage, design, open spaces and local businesses.

The first steps in the process are to define the neighbourhood to which the plan will apply and to formally designate the neighbourhood forum that will have the responsibility for preparing the Neighbourhood Plan. Only one neighbourhood forum can be designated in a single neighbourhood area.

The council is currently considering an application from the existing community group the Herne Hill Forum to define the Herne Hill neighbourhood area and to establish themselves as the Neighbourhood Forum for that area. The proposed neighbourhood area and neighbourhood forum membership lies partially within London Borough of Southwark and partially within London Borough of Lambeth. In accordance with the Neighbourhood Planning (General) Regulations 2012, both local planning authorities are out for consultation on the application for a period of 6 weeks, between Monday 31 July and Monday 11 September 2017.

Following the close of the consultation, both Southwark Council and London Borough of Lambeth will come to a decision whether to designate the neighbourhood forum and neighbourhood area within 20 weeks of the initial publication of the application.

The fourteen-year-old cyclist powered to glory in the Youth Girls B race in the Grand Prix on Friday.

The Grand Prix was held at the Lee Valley VeloPark in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as part of the three-day Prudential RideLondon.

And for Bloomer, a pupil at St Dunstan’s School, the win was the perfect way to bounce back from a recent below-par run of form.

“There were lots of little attacks but no really big ones, so I decided to just sit in it,” Bloomer said.

“At the end, no one was on the left-hand side so I came from the outside and sprinted.

“I’m really happy to have won. It’s good because the National Championships

LONDON SOUTH Bank University’s (LSBU) men’s rugby team were broadcast live on Chinese television as they competed for the first time at the UK-China Sports Week.

The team of sixteen travelled last week to Zhuhai in the south of China and took part in the cultural exchange programme arranged by the British Council and the Federation of University Sport China, which is focused on boosting the profile of rugby in China.

The programme included a competition with local Chinese teams and Swansea University, who also represented the UK and edged out LSBU in the final game. The team returned home with a silver medal.

Phil Newman, Head of Sport and Recreation at LSBU’s Academy of Sport, said: “As well as the sporting competition itself, LSBU students took part in workshops discussing the UK-China sporting landscape, teaching and learning methods and also lifestyle similarities and differences of the student groups.

“It’s really cool to cycle at Lee Valley, although it has changed a lot since I first started riding here,” she added.

“I got into cycling when I went down to the velodrome and really liked track cycling. I then started doing a bit of road.

“I think the Prudential RideLondon is really cool, because we don’t really have many big events for riders our age.”

SURREY’S DAVE Parletti is the inaugural IDL Champion of Champions after winning through a star-studded field on Sunday at Rileys Victoria to take home the title and the £500 first prize.

The former England international didn't have it all his own way, finishing runner-up in his group behind Unicorn Next Generation star Connor Scutt, with wins over Jarda Hovorka and Ken Oliver.

This put him in the more difficult side of the draw for the last 32, but he went up a level in the knockout stages, taking out Mark Hulland and Shane Edwards for the loss of just one leg, before beating Scotland's Matt Wilson 6-2 in the quarter-final.

The best performance came in the semi-final, where he beat PDC Pro Tour player and Brazil's number one Diogo Portela 8-0.

Peckham club trying to raise funds for kits and equipment PECKHAM COMMUNITY football club Jéan Té Lé held their awards presentation recently at the Harris Academy Bermondsey.

Over 300 people comprised of members, friends and family attended the event. The event was also attended by Southwark councillors Lorraine Lauder

MBE, Barrie Hargrove and Sandra Rhule, and Gill Kelly from the Peckham and Nunhead Community Council.

Awards were given for Most Goals, Most Assists, Managers Player, Most Improved Player, Best Team, League Winners and Team Participation.

FC Jéan Té Lé uses football to engage

with young people in the local community, train at Burgess Park and play home games at Peckham Rye. The club started in 2011 with just eleven members, and now has over 230, with fourteen teams made up of players aged between five and sixteen.

Jon Lodwick now adopted the role played by Temba Bavuma in the Test, dominating a stand of 26 in 4.5 overs with skipper Alex Gledhill, who made a resolute three off nineteen balls.

At 87-8 after 37 overs Lodwick was joined by Kamran Munawar, who played himself in carefully, scoring just two runs off his first sixteen balls, before going on the attack. The pair had added 81 in 16.4

overs when Munawar fell in the penultimate over with the score on 168.

Lodwick then scored 24 off the last eight balls of the innings, including ninteen off the last over, to take his side to 192-9 after their 55 overs. Lodwick finished unbeaten with 81 off 86 balls, while Munawar’s 41 had come off 60 balls. Both batsmen had recorded their top scores for the first team.

But the rain was already falling as the players left the field, and despite a couple of brief interludes it never relented long enough for the match to resume. It was therefore abandoned, with both sides

professional clubs, and seventeen are training at professional academies.

Rain a pain as Dulwich recovery washed out

DULWICH STAGED a remarkable recovery in their Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 2 match at Epsom, but it proved to be in vain as the weather had the final say.

Epsom put their opponents in under overcast skies and with the threat of heavy rain to come.

Fourteen runs off the first three overs proved to be a false dawn as the bowling tightened and scoring became ever more difficult.

The first three wickets fell within the space of ten balls, and they continued to fall at regular intervals until the seventh

taking four points.

This was the second week in succession that all the matches in Division 2 were rained off. It was particularly galling for Dulwich as they were playing the two teams immediately above them in the table, and victory in either match could have lifted them out of the relegation zone. They thus remain in ninth place, with only five matches remaining. Next week the format reverts to 50 overs a side, as Dulwich travel to Worcester Park who are currently third in the table.

A DULWCIH side missing a raft of first-teamers was hammered by Whyteleafe in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday night.

Hamlet included a number of trialists and fell behind when Charles Postance scored for the Isthmian League South side, before Mohamed Mohamed missed a chance to equalise.

Sam Clayton then doubled the Surrey club’s lead before former Hamlet man Tyrell Forbes denied Mohamed.

Dulwich were unlucky not to equalise just after the break, but Ashley Carew smacked his free-kick off a post after Nana Boakye-Yiadom had been brought down.

The home side made it 3-0 in the 64th minute when Jerry Amoo was given far too much room to fire home at the near post.

With eighteen minutes left Dulwich pulled a goal back, and it was a carbon copy of their earlier effort, except this time after Boakye-Yiadom had been fouled Carew expertly found the net from the free-kick.

But any hopes of an improbable comeback were dashed when Whyteleafe scored three goals in the last seven minutes through Daniel Ajakaiye, Andrew Musungu and Ajakaiye again.

On Saturday, Hamlet lost 1-0 to Brentford B, Reece Cole scoring the only goal of the game for the Bees.

Hamlet invite fans to open training session

DULWICH HAMLET want “players and fans to get closer than ever this season” – and are hoping an open training session early this month will be the first step in making that happen.

The Isthmian League Premier Division side are inviting supporters to Champion Hill on August 8, with Gavin Rose putting his squad through their paces from 7.30pm.

As well as getting autograph and photo opportunities with their favourite players, five supporters will be given the chance to take on five of Rose’s squad in a penalty shootout – with the losers buying the winners a round of drinks.

Hamlet will launch their new kit – manufactured by Kappa and sponsored by Picfair – in the club bar at about 8.45pm.

Club chairman Liam Hickey said: “The whole evening is actually the brainchild of Gavin Rose. He really wants the players and fans to get closer than ever this season.

“And I couldn't agree more, we're all part of the same Dulwich Hamlet family, whether we're supporters, management, players, club officials or sponsors.

BYRON WEBSTER would have considered his future if Millwall hadn’t been promoted in May, he has admitted.

Webster is contracted to the Lions until 2018, which will bring him up to four years with the club.

The 30-year-old defender divides his time between south London and Yorkshire, where his family live, and the desire to play Championship football would have alerted northern clubs.

Webster was linked with Sheffield United last summer before signing a new two-year contract.

He joked that he is still waiting to hear about a potential new deal, but would be keen to extend his stay with Millwall.

“Yeah, definitely, but you never know in football,” he said. “I’ve only got a year left on my contract, the transfer window is still open.

Someone needs to offer me a new deal!

“I’d be lying if I said I didn't want to be in the Championship.

But it doesn't matter, I’m here now.

“I’m happy, so if a new deal was there... but nothing’s been given to me.”

Webster has become one of Millwall’s most consistent performers in the last eighteen months after initially struggling following his move from Yeovil in 2014 to link up with then-Lions boss Ian Holloway, who is now at QPR. But it isn’t that London derby fixture that he is most looking forward to this season. “No, it means nothing to me,” he said about facing his old manager. “He signed me, but no, I don't care.

“I’m looking where I am over the Christmas period so I can see my family and if there’s a game near

my birthday. Leeds is a big game for me because I’m from there. A lot of my family are Leeds fans so it will be a good day.”

Webster, in common with the majority of the Millwall squad, have spent the majority of their careers playing below Championship level.

And he believes Lions players have plenty to prove.

He explained: “I think everyone does. There are a few of us who have played in the Championship.

I was there with Yeovil and Doncaster, but we’ve all got something to prove, from Moro [Steve Morison], TC [Tony Craig] and myself to the young lads. You have to prove [yourself] week-in, week-out to the fans.

“The gaffer has added a few new faces this year, and the people he’s brought in, you can see their quality. He brought in two fullbacks who were named in the team of the year for League One. “In the last two years we've always had a good group, banter on and off the pitch and we enjoy it. Does that have anything to do winning week-in, week-out?

Possibly. So if we come into the Championship and struggle, it may not be a good place to be.

“But at the minute, we’re enjoying it and we get on well.”

Webster will come up against a number of big-name players this season, and he is hoping teams are complacent against Millwall, who are one of the favourites for relegation.

“They’re big players - are they going to be bothered by coming here? I don't know. Hopefully they're not bothered and they take us lightly as a team and we can roll them over.

“John Terry has been through worse things than coming to The Den, so I’m sure it won’t faze him.

But hopefully it does and I’m sure our fans will give him a warm welcome anyway!”

BYRON WEBSTER has explained the background to a photo that was doing the rounds on social media after the play-off final win over Bradford in May.

Webster and Jake Cooper were snapped outside Warren Street tube station - still in their tracksuits and with winners’ medals around their necks - mobilising a couple of Boris Bikes, just hours after their Wembley triumph.

And Webster revealed he and teammate Cooper had become impatient in the heavy traffic and couldn’t wait to get something to eat.

“I’d done a drug test afterwards and I was starving,” Webster said. “I didn't feel really well on the bus.

“The bus was taking ages to go through central London and I needed to get off and get some food. I jumped off and Coops was behind me. We had some food and I was like, ‘how are we going to get to the hotel?’

“He said we could order a taxi, but obviously as a northerner I’m tight and it was going to be expensive getting a black cab. There were some Boris bikes outside, £2.50 for two, and we thought ‘deal’.

“We got on the bikes and went.

Didn't realise we’d got pictured with them. I thought you could just dump them anywhere but you have to find these places. It was miles away where we had to dump them, and I got cramp in my quad, so it was a bad idea!

“We went past our family bus so they saw us and jumped off. It was good – I saw the city!”

Webster insisted he took it relatively easy with the celebrations after the second promotion of his career, partly because he was unwell.

“That day, I felt awful,” he recalled.

“We went to the hotel for a bit and me and my family went back to my place.

“I had a holiday booked with a few friends so let loose a bit. I came back and had a holiday with the family and then we were more or less back in [for pre-season].

“For me, since I have kids, I finish my game, go home and chill with them or they take my mind off it.

Whereas as a youngster, you finish a game and think, ‘what do I do? I’ve had a bad game’.

“Now I just unwind. So it was the same at the end of the season. I went away for a few days, let loose, and then went off with the family.”

had barely regrouped after Shaun Williams had combined with Wallace on the edge of the box to shoot low past Silva, before the winger crossed for O’Brien to head home. It was really poor defending by the away side, who looked like they wanted to quickly hop on a flight back to Spain.

Jordan Archer had only two meaningful saves to make in 90 minutes and though Millwall would have hoped for a tougher test, their confidence should be high going to Nottingham Forest on Friday.

It could have been worse for Granada. Silva batted away a shot from substitute Tom Elliott before the striker saw his effort cleared off the line after he had been set up by Lee Gregory. In between, Shaun Hutchinson hit the post after he had got his head to Shane Ferguson’s corner.

JUST AS Neil Harris wasn’t worried when Millwall didn’t win in three pre-season games, he won’t be getting carried away after this emphatic victory.

Granada were playing Real Madrid and Barcelona last season, and raising eyebrows by appointing Tony Adams as boss in their failed attempt to avoid relegation. They are expected to challenge for promotion back to La Liga this season, but arrived in south London after a taxing week then they played two games in the Netherlands.

Their season also doesn’t start until August 20 and it was obvious from the early stages that Millwall, just six days before their Championship opener against Nottingham Forest, were much sharper.

The Lions hadn’t scored in successive games, but never looked like drawing another blank on Saturday.

Their confidence and quicker

thinking was illustrated by Byron Webster, of all people, trying to lob Rui Costa with a free-kick from halfway, and the centre-back didn’t miss the target by much.

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris feels the mental tests his side passed last season will benefit them as they attempt to make an impact on their return to the Championship.

The Lions were involved in several pressure-cooker games in 2016-17: the clash with Charlton at The Den in December on the back of three defeats; the final day at Bristol Rovers when they had to win; and the play-off final against Bradford a year after losing to Barnsley at Wembley.

They came through them all to win promotion after two seasons in League One. Asked this week if that experience would stand to the squad, Harris said: “It does. We’ll need that this year. We need the group mentality. We’ll need to bounce back this year. We had some difficult spells last season, early on we got beaten 5-1 at Peterborough and bounced back to win the next game. A couple of times I think we lost three games in a row.

“I felt we had a game here against Charlton, I wouldn’t say make-orbreak, but it was a big turning point in our season just before Christmas.

Pretty much a sell-out crowd against our local rivals who hadn’t beaten us for a long, long time. There was pressure that night and we turned them over comfortably and convincingly.

“That set us on an unbeaten run for seventeen games. We can handle things. This is going to be the same.

We’re going to have difficult spells and be under the cosh.

“We’re going to have some difficult runs, fixtures-wise. Everything we have been through in the last couple of years will set us in good stead.”

Harris has re-shaped his squad again this summer, with eight players departing either permanently or on loan and seven players recruited.

Harris got all his first-choice targets in the transfer window, but still spent less on those seven players than

Nottingham Forest did on striker Daryl Murphy.

Millwall are one of the favourites for relegation, but Harris is relishing the challenge against some bigspending sides.

He said: “In individual games there will be elements of going into them and the players and fans will be saying, ‘cor, the players they’ve got and the money they’ve spent – we can have a right go at these’.

“We saw Barnsley and Burton do it really well last year. We have to find our way again at this level. We got

back a lot quicker than expected, in two years, I was really pleased about that.

“I do feel we’re ahead of where we planned to be and we are ready for it.

But it’s not going to be easy at times.

There has to be the underdog mentality, where we’re going to have to accept some good players against us and some teams really able to keep the ball. That will start Friday night against Forest. We’ll have to be diligent and accept that fact but also [know] that we can be a very dangerous side.”

Forest survived relegation on goal difference last season and lost top scorer Britt Assombalonga to Middlesbrough during the summer, replacing him with Murphy.

Forest boss Mark Warburton also used his Rangers connections to sign winger Barrie McKay. Lions club captain Tony Craig and Mahlon Romeo started for a Millwall XI side in a 4-1 win at Welling on Monday night, indicating new fullbacks Conor McLaughlin and James Meredith will play against Forest.

New Lions midfielder: ‘I want to show everyone what a good player I am’

IT’S NO wonder Ryan Tunnicliffe admits he owes Neil Harris after the brushes he has had with managers in his career.

Tunnicliffe joined Millwall on Saturday, less than a week to go before the start of the Championship season.

He had spent most of the summer wondering who would give him the chance to prove that he is the talented player who was good enough to play for Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager he considers the best of all time.

Tunnicliffe is a United fan, but at 21 years old he decided to leave for regular first-team football.

It seemed ideal that the manager who brought him to Fulham from Old Trafford then, Rene Meulensteen, had worked with him in the United youth teams and had known him since he was nine years old.

But less than a month after Tunnicliffe moved to London in Janaury 2014, Meulensteen was gone and replaced with Felix Magath.

Tunnicliffe had played just twice under Meulensteen – against former club United and Liverpool – before Magath made it clear what he thought of him by sending him on loan to Championship Wigan.

Tunnicliffe returned to the Cottagers later that season but Magath gave him just eleven minutes of action, on the final day of the Premier League season, a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace with Fulham already on their way to the Championship.

Magath only lasted until September of the following season before he was sacked and Kit Symons appointed.

Symons rated Tunnicliffe and so too it seemed did Slavisa Jokanovic, who arrived at Craven Cottage two caretaker managers after Symons.

But less than a year later Tunnicliffe again found himself on the fringes, and not quite sure what the reason for that was. He started last season in the first team but ended it back at Wigan again.

Rewind to September 2014, after he had joined Blackburn Rovers on loan, Tunnicliffe admitted, “I’ve got a bit of a chip on my shoulder now it’s not worked out at Wigan or Fulham.”

Asked earlier this week before his first training session with the club – in front of fans at the annual open day at The Den – if he felt he had something to prove to Fulham, he gave a more measured response.

“Not to Fulham, no, these things happen,” he said. “I’ve got a point to prove to myself because I don’t like the fact that I was out of contract and they didn’t want to renew it. Millwall showed a lot of interest so I need to repay the gaffer for giving me another chance. It’s more proving it to myself and showing everyone what a good player I am.”

In 2012, Tuncliffe was part of Manchester United’s pre-season tour to China. Five years later he knew he

wouldn’t be getting a new contract with Fulham and he faced an uncertain future.

His first loan spell at Wigan had also ended badly, with then-Latics boss Uwe Rosler sending him back to his parent club after just five games.

Although just 24, Tunnicliffe has played for seven clubs, never really finding that long-term stability with a manager he trusts and who trusts him.

It felt like the next step in his career would be crucial, so signing for a manager in Harris who has brought stability to Millwall in his two full seasons in charge made sense.

“There were a few clubs interested but I met the gaffer and he put a presentation on and really showed me

that he had done his homework on me,” Tunnicliffe said.

“It was new to me and different and it’s nice to be wanted. It was a nobrainer.

“The perception of some clubs from the outside is totally different to what you get inside. You can’t really listen to rumours and hearsay. I just listened to what the manager had to say. He’s passionate about the club. He really sold it to me and I can’t wait.

“The gaffer told me the way we like to play, we like to press high and he said we’re going to give it a real go.

Anything’s possible, you look at the likes of Barnsley who came up last year. They were as high as the play-offs at times and had a really good season.”

Tunnicliffe now has yet another manager to impress, and not having a pre-season behind him will present an extra challenge. He spent the summer in the gym as he weighed up his options, but he is prepared to be patient to secure a first-team place.

He said: “It’s up to the gaffer when he wants to use me and me to take my chance if and when it comes. Coming to any club you don’t expect to walk into the team no matter what the circumstances are. I’m going to have to earn my stripes and play well in

Unsurprisingly given where he grew up, his role model is Roy Keane, who was captain of United when Tunnicliffe first joined the club. “I only know one way to play and that’s to give 110 per cent,” Tunnicliffe said. “I put my foot in, tackle, chase lost causes. I’m hoping that the fans appreciate that and see what I do for the team.”

Tunnicliffe probably won’t be considered for the first game of the season at Nottingham Forest on Friday as he catches up on fitness.

Millwall will be the underdogs in most games this season, and Tunnicliffe is facing another big challenge in his career, to finally reaslise his potential.

Both club and player have lots to prove then, so it feels like a good match.

“If you go into every game positive and everyone tries and pulls together then anything’s possible,” Tunnicliffe insisted.

“There are some big teams in the league this year who will probably underestimate us going into games, especially in the first half of the season, because they won’t know what to expect. I’m sure they’ll be aware of us after we start getting results and doing well.

“Anything’s possible if everyone knuckles down and pulls together.

Anything can be done.”

RYAN TUNNICLIFFE admitted it was “nerve-wracking” arriving at The Den this week, but said the decision to join the club was a “nobrainer”.

There was no hiding place for Tunnicliffe on Monday morning, with a few hundred Lions fans in the Barry Kitchener Stand to watch his first training session with the club.

Tunnicliffe signed a two-year deal with Millwall last weekend after his contract with Fulham expired at the end of last season.

He had spent the latter part of the campaign on loan at Wigan, after a

promising start to the season when he was in Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic’s plans.

But he admitted it was a difficult summer facing an uncertain future before Neil Harris offered him the opportunity to join the Lions.

“It’s not been great, it’s not something you want in your career, but you’ve just got to take it on the chin and hope people are interested,” Tunnicliffe said. “I met the gaffer here and he sold the club to me. It was a no-brainer, really.

“I knew I was in the last year of my contract and then when you get sent out on loan you don’t expect them to want to renew it. I was half expecting it, so it is what it is.

“It was one of those things, the gaffer [Jokanovic] fell out of love with me at the time, but I can’t really put my finger on what it was. I played a lot the year before under the gaffer, so I’m not too sure what changed.

These things happen in football but you’ve just got to get on with it and knuckle down.

“It’s a bit nerve-wracking coming and meeting the lads for the first time, but that’s easily done in two minutes, say your hellos and get going.”

Tunnicliffe played against Millwall twice in 2014-15, with Blackburn and with Fulham.

And he is looking forward to being on the right side of the Den atmosphere this season.

He said: “I’ve played at The Den a few times, obviously it’s different when you’re the away team. You don’t really look forward to coming here because it can be quite hostile.

“I can’t wait because it’ll be nice to have the full stadium on my side.

“I don’t know anyone here personally but I’m quite easy to get on with. I’m sure I’ll get to know them over a few days.

“I feel fit and am available but we’ll see how I do over the week. It’s been a long summer for me and as much as you can go to the gym and things like that, it’s difficult to replicate what you’re going to feel in the game. It’s up to the gaffer but of course I want to play.”

Forest, who finished 21st last season and avoided relegation on goal difference, splashed out almost £2million on striker Daryl Murphy this summer – more than Millwall spent recruiting seven players.

Forest also have most of the £15million they received from Middlesbrough for Britt Assombalonga in the bank, and their summer spending is unlikely to be over.

Harris feels that means the expectation will be on Mark Warburton’s side at the City Ground.

“Forest need to beat us, really,” Harris said. “They are under massive pressure. They’ve spent money over the summer, they've got a big squad, there are players on big wages – they’re expected to roll us over on Friday night.”

Millwall completed the permanent signings of Jake Cooper and Ryan Tunnicliffe last weekend, and Harris explained the transfer policy this close season was to bring in players with “something to prove”.

“What I’ve done is try to recruit players who have played a certain amount of football at this level, but also gone for players who are really hungry to prove themselves in the Championship,” he explained.

“And I think that’s key. I’ve got a group of players that played about 60 games last year and similarl the year before. They've earned the right to play at this level. I’ve brought players in who have the same mentality as our dressing room, same work ethic, same personality with some good lads.

“And they've all got something to prove.”
