European-style tourist tax could help struggling high streets, says Southwark Lib Dems

Commenting on the proposal, he said: “The council must start to take full advantage of Southwark’s appeal to tourists. A tourist tax is the perfect way to do just that, with minimal financial impact for visitors but huge financial benefit to the borough.

“This investment would provide the support that our high streets and small to medium business owners need, especially as many struggle with the cost of living crisis.

“In this time of financial instability and uncertainty, local businesses and the people who rely on them need to know that Southwark is doing everything it can to support them.”

Lots of European cities like Barcelona and Rome charge holidayers an extra levy. In Amsterdam, visitors can expect to a flat €3 fee per night plus 7 per cent on their hotel bill.

Last month, Manchester City Council announced plans to become the first UK city to introduce the tax, which would see tourists charged an extra £1 per night in some hotels.

Manchester is set to take £3 million per year from the tax and Southwark, with its multitude of attractions like Tower Bridge and Borough Market, could also cash on such

Before and after: Tatiana Timon, 35, said she’s grateful to be alive after contracting malaria on holiday, which led to her having all her limbs amputated.

A Camberwell-based woman, who got the deadliest form of malaria on holiday, was put into a coma and woke up with no arms or legs.

Last year, Tatiana Timon was on a dance trip to Angola when she unknowingly contracted malaria.

“On the trip, I was absolutely fine,” she said. “I do kizomba - which is a dance from Angola with similarities to Samba - I’ve been doing it for five years and I really love it.

“I was travelling a lot for dancing - this time I went with a group on Facebook.

I’d never met the people so it was an adventure.”

The 35-year-old is originally from a tiny island near Mauritius, called Réunion Island. She moved to the UK over ten years ago, having lived mostly in south east London, including Surrey Quays and now Camberwell.

She told the News that when she returned from the trip she was fine: “I even went to kizomba the next day” she said. But, a couple of days later things took a turn.

“I fell off my bike on the way to work - nothing serious, no external injuries but that night I started to feel a pain.”

When Tatiana went to the hospital the next day, she was given painkillers and signed off work for five days. “I honestly don’t remember what happened after that.”

Her friend was looking after her whilst she was off work. Although Tatiana’s memory is hazy, her friend said she grew weaker and weaker - so decided to call the hospital again.

It was then that doctors discovered she had malaria - and that it was too far gone for her.

“My friend said they told her that the percentage of bacteria in my blood was so high, they had to put me in a coma. I stayed in the coma for 4 weeks.”

Although she wasn’t conscious, the malaria had turned into sepsis - a type of blood poisoning. Her family was told they needed to say goodbye to her as doctors thought she wouldn’t make it.

Most of them couldn’t make it over, except her father, who had never really left Réunion. “My Dad doesn’t speak English at all - he had never really stepped out of the country.

“So it was really amazing he came.”

Tatiana explained that that her health

“I was bitten by a mosquito on holiday and woke up from a coma with no arms or legs” actually improved after her dad arrived, which could be the reason she survived.

But she didn’t walk away the same - the sepsis meant she had to have her arms and legs amputated.

“In June, they amputated my arms and then in July my legs. I remember going to the block to have that done.”

She spent 3 months in hospital and now is on the road to recovery.

But how does she remain so positive?

“I could have died. I could have not been here today - so that keeps me going. I understand why they did it.

They had to do it to save me. So I’m grateful.

“I saw a photo of what the dead limbs looked like. And I’m glad they got rid of

them.”

Tatiana described her life before the surgery as very active: “I was working in restaurants, going to the gym and dancing at least twice a week.”

Now, she said she is learning to live completely differently - but she is determined to get back to dancing.

“If I want to dance again, I will have to get special prosthetics. But I saw a video of another amputee dancer, so I know it’s possible.

“But for now I’m just focusing on doing daily tasks.”

Peckham Rye Station’s restoration is all but complete and in May, the scaffolding will be stripped away, laying bare the building’s Victorian splendour.

A buried staircase, abandoned billiard room, and stunning facade are just some of its soon-to-be-revealed secrets. Last week, the News got a sneak preview.

A Grand Beginning

When the station opened in December 1865, it was with some fanfare. Designed by legendary Victorian architect Charles Henry Driver, it bore his famous decorative style.

The station also provided a useful stop for passengers heading to the popular Great Exhibition on Sydenham Hill, now Crystal Palace. Its connections with local stations were described as being “of the greatest accommodation” to local commuters in an 1866 issue of the South London Chronicle.

Restoring the Facade

The building’s 60 doors and windows have been refurbished and re-painted while broken parts of the Gothic Revival Bath stone have been repaired.

The 1980s restoration saw cement repointing, which is now being removed and replaced with lime mortar. “We’re putting back materials that were used in the Victorian times… rather than the modern hard cement mortar that was jammed onto the building in the ‘80s,” explained Benny O’Looney.

Architectural lighting will be installed on the outside of the building so commuters can admire the restored features. When the 1930s arcade is demolished to accommodate the expanded Station Square, it’ll be much easier to appreciate the full scale of the new frontage.

Uncovering the Forgotten Staircase

“Holy smokes” - that was Benny’s reaction when he peered into a perilous hole, and first glimpsed the forgotten Victorian staircase which had been buried beneath piles of rubble for decades.

The stairs had once served platform two. But in 1962, when the old platforms were demolished, and replaced with island platforms, the staircase became inaccessible.

Driver was clearly integral to the stairs’ design. “It’s a tour-de-force of cast-iron work. You can see this fabulous foliate work here… this is one of the most impressive bits that survive at Peckham Rye Station,” said Benny.

But over the next 150 years, the building’s illustrious beginnings were gradually forgotten.

This wasn’t helped by the 1930s arcade built at the entrance, which transformed the once airy forecourt into a maze of gloomy corridors. There was a restoration in the 1980s but some say it failed to recapture the station’s Victorian essence.

But in 2009, Peckham architect Benedict O’Looney embarked on a loving restoration of the building with support from Network Rail, the Railway Heritage Trust and Southwark Council.

The restoration is described as a “prelude” to the Peckham Rye Station upgrade - a modernisation programme that will see new lifts added, widened platforms, and the construction of the new Station Square.

The windows looking into the staircase have been unbricked so passing commuters can peer inside.

Once the waiting room is opened up to the public, this staircase will be the main point of entry. An original black painted sign pointing the way has been carefully repainted.

It lay abandoned after 1962, when iron plates were put on the windows. But the team has opened them to sunlight once again. Its grand opening is on May 16, when it will host New York-based artist Sarah Sze’s sculpture exhibition, hosted by art organisation Artangel.

The old waiting room, high up at platform level, was made to shelter Victorian travellers as they awaited their train.

Designed in the French Second Empire style, the vast vaulted room, with its huge iron beams, would have been an impressive sight. It was adorned with huge gas chandeliers, a plaster ceiling, and had four huge crackling fireplaces.

In 1922, it was repurposed as a billiard room, although Benny says it was “always

Even its brownish-yellow Taylor Patent Tiles were notable. Interlocking, robust and well-suited for mass manufacturing, they were a distinctly Victorian innovation.

But the iron crestings were removed

in the interwar period and the tiling was lost. A re-roofing concealed much of the roof’s original geometry, which Benny gradually rediscovered using old photos, architectural surveys and even modern drone footage.

The team worked out that the tops of the original iron crestings had been gilded, and commissioned brand new crestings that captured Driver’s vision.

The elements of the crestings were 3D printed and made from molten aluminium, instead of iron, to reduce weight.

They are slightly taller than the originals to make them more impactful to passers-by.

The 24 elaborate posts were gilded in 23.75-carat gold thanks to funding from the Heritage of London Trust.

Taylor’s Patent Tiles were being remade for the Leatherhead Station around a decade ago. They were commissioned for the station, and given an engobe glaze that give them their original, distinctive, mottled look.

Although the restoration is all but finished, Peckham Rye Station’s revamp still has a long way to go.

Network Rail has publicised its proposals and work is underway. The total cost could come to around £40 million so new funding sources are still being sought.

Last year, Southwark Council was snubbed by central government when it applied for £15.2 million in Levelling Up funding to help with the upgrade. But however long it takes, this restoration represents a pivotal chapter in Peckham Rye Station’s story.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk After a career spent behind a desk as a management consultant, a 47-year-old is taking his first steps as a Met Police officer on the streets of Peckham. PC Richard Goold spoke to the News about life as a police constable and how it might not be “a young person’s game”.

“Here comes another rapist!” Those were the words hurled at Richard, still new to the job, as he responded to a domestic violence incident in south London.

He hardly needed a reminder of the momentous challenges facing the Met - but it was one. “You hear that word ‘rapist’ and you think ‘this is all part of what I’m here to deal with’,” Richard said.

Richard grew up with three siblings in a working-class family in Wimbledon. He was the first to attend university, studying Business Management at London South Bank University. After working at Barclays, he built a successful career in management consultancy.

He always had a keen interest in law and order. As a management consultant, he helped build the United Arab Emirates’ modern justice system.

He also spent year sixteen years working as a magistrate, in Sutton, Camberwell and Croydon, which gave him an insight into police work.

“It made me wonder what a police career would be like. It piqued my

interest but there was always a question about… [it being] a young person’s game.

“Covid hit and it created an inflection point in terms of ‘do I want to do what I’ve always done…or do I want to do something different?’”

The murder of Sarah Everard, declining trust in the police, and the mixed attitudes of his own sons, aged fourteen and sixteen, toward the force, helped motivate his decision.

Richard said: “It’s easier to sit outside the room and throw stones at something you don’t agree with.

“If I want to affect positive change, joining the Met is probably a good place to be,” he added.

Richard turned down the option to fast-track to a senior role, choosing to serve the beat in Lambeth and Southwark because of its reputation for being “busy” and its “eclectic mix of challenges”. He had his ‘passing

out’ ceremony on Friday, February 24, and now works from Peckham Police Station on the response team.

One incident that resonates with Richard came on February 8, the day after David Carrick was given 36 life sentences for 85 serious offences including 48 rapes against twelve women.

“We got called to a domestic incident. It was a female caller - her ex-boyfriend was trying to get into

her flat and she was scared of him.

She was in a shouting match with the gentleman when my colleague and I pulled up.

“The female shouted at me ‘here comes another rapist!’…she was clearly in a moment of crisis. As a police officer, you need to step through that immediately. You haven’t got time to process what you’ve just heard.

“You hear that word rapist and you think ‘this all part of what I’m here to deal with’. It’s just a small glimpse of the big paintbrush that gets us all tarnished with the same perception.”

He said the day-to-day job can certainly be fast-paced but that he’s found “there can be a lot of standing around”. He explained that police often get sidetracked to deal with people going through mental crises, which can take two officers off the streets for fifteen hours at a time.

“It can be a million miles an hour but it’s not always the blue lights and adrenaline-fuelled,” he said.

He said he’d enjoyed meeting community leaders and been taken aback by groups’ willingness to work with police, even if they’ve had bad experiences.

Richard said he’d met individuals who remember the 1981 Brixton riots, sparked by tensions between the black community and predominantly white police. He said some of these people had “relatives who died following contact with the police.

“For them to want to work with us, and compromise personal relationships in doing so, is really powerful.”

These edible community gardens in Southwark are opening to the public, offering garden tours and seed planting, to encourage people to do their bit for the planet and grow their own food.

Good to Grow Day is a national weekend of action from Friday 21st to Monday 24th April for edible gardens to celebrate the new growing season, open their doors to the local community and encourage people to volunteer.

Food and farming charity, Sustain, support these spaces via the Capital Growth and Good to Grow networks.

They are now calling for councils to increase access to and protection of London’s community growing spaces.

Hospital cleaning and catering staff set to strike at Maudsley

By Isabel Ramirez isabel@southwarknews.co.uk GMB union members, who work as cleaning and catering staff at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM), will go on strike from Sunday 23rd April until Tuesday 25th.

More than 170 workers will down tools in their fight for £14.34 an hour and full Agenda for Change NHS terms and conditions.

If the dispute is not resolved, strike action is likely to hit four south London hospitals across South London and Maudsley Trust (SLaM), impacting catering and cleaning services.

SLaM specialises in mental health and comprises four psychiatric hospitals, more than 100 community sites and 300 clinical teams.

Helen O’Connor, GMB Organiser said: “Our members who do vital work for SLaM have had enough of eking out

a miserable existence on poverty pay whilst juggling impossible workloads.

“They are struggling to feed themselves and their families. The anger is palpable amongst the workers who just want to be treated fairly.

“GMB members are also concerned that ISS is cutting hours and replacing permanent staff with agency workers.

This means that the cleaning and catering in the trust are being compromised and this is having an adverse effect on standards for patients and visitors to the sites.

“We are calling on ISS and South London and Maudsley to get around the table to discuss how to protect and enhance the catering and cleaning services in SLaM and we believe this starts with paying the workforce what they need and deserve to survive.

“If the dispute is not resolved GMB members will embark on an escalating programme of strike action from April.

From April 21-24, they will be selling their first tomato seedlings of the year, at an affordable price, as well as some incredible and unusual plants, propagated by their students.

They serve tea and coffee and are open to all visitors seven days a week. The garden is free to visit.

They are running two workshops on Saturday (April 22) and Sunday (April

23): The Art of Bonsai, and a herbalism workshop on preparing the healing power of Bitters. The workshops are extra and cost £85 each.

Walworth park is reopening to the local community with a free family fun day

isabel@southwarknews.co.uk A Walworth park, which closed before the pandemic, has undergone a transformation and is re-opening to the public with a family event, with entertainers, kids activities and free hot dogs.

Pelier Park in Walworth is now open again for the first time since 2019, following construction works to improve the park.

The park was originally the site of a music hall turned cinema lost during the WW2 bombings.

The proposals create an active and vibrant focal point for all ages at the centre of the park-infused with memories of the music hall. Features include a table tennis and basketball play area, double swings, climbing equipment with a slide, a picnic bench and 14 new trees.

It has been funded by Southwark Council, who worked closely with the Pelier TRA in a bid to cater for residents on the Pelier estate and surrounding community.

Southwark Council gave King’s College London (KCL) permission to build the student halls on the former Mulberry Business Park in 2013.

With just 104 rooms out of a total 960 classed as affordable, just 11 per cent are classed as affordable housing, below the council’s policy of 35 per cent, which was active at the time and still is today.

Research has revealed how the university sidestepped Southwark’s affordable housing policy by arguing that the development would not be financially viable with more affordable homes.

A council officer’s report also said the reduced number would not compromise affordable housing delivery targets in Canada Water, and that there was a need for more students in the area.

The report said the lower amount of affordable housing could be accepted given the “job creation and the reputational benefits of a world class educational institution locating in this part of the borough”.

Carvil, a strategic communications company founded by Kim Humphreys, former deputy leader and executive member for housing at Southwark Council, led the scheme’s ‘public affairs and stakeholder engagement programme’.

While there is no suggestion that KCL or Southwark Council broke planning regulations, a tweet from the housing campaign group the 35% Campaign highlighting the perceived lack of affordable housing was liked and retweeted over 100 times.

The student accommodation in Canada Water figure is only correct when accounting for numerous planning policy technicalities.

Affordable housing is calculated by habitable room which in this instance makes it 93 out of 949 affordable habitable rooms - less than 10 per cent.

But rooms over 27.5sqm count as two habitable rooms, equating to 104 affordable rooms out of 960 - 11 per cent.

KCL is currently advertising ensuite rooms for £289 per week. The viability assessment which paved the way for

planning permission was based on en suites being let for £190 per week.

In 2020, the development was sold to student housing company Scape but KCL secured a nomination agreement for 401 beds.

Scape is advertising ‘en suites’ from this July at rates between £279 and £335pw.

Last month, developer Wandle announced the purchase of the 33 affordable units from Scape, with residents set to move in this month.

Children enjoyed an Easter egg hunt, a floral crowns workshop, a bouncy castle and face painting, on Sunday, April 9.

Traders, who’d been treated to free pitches, sold food, games, toys and drinks, while live Latin jazz music provided the day’s soundtrack.

The Brandon 1 Tenants’ and Residents’ Association wrote: “All in all a great family day, and having the market stalls in Maddock Way really breathed some life into the space and encouraged people to stay and relax these for the whole afternoon. We set out some communal seating and tables for people to relax and enjoy the Latin-jazz quartet who played four sets and created a lovely ambience at the event.”

When the Kennington Estate was built in the 1950s, Maddock Way was envisaged as the commercial epicentre.

Originally, there was a post office, butchers, convenience store, pharmacy, doctors, greengrocers and pub available to residents.

While the pub, convenience store and pharmacy remain open, there are three barren shops.

A Twitter storm erupted last month when local campaign groups pointed out that a 770-bedroom student accommodation in Canada Water had just 23 social rent properties, prompting the News to investigate.

Southwark Council says its planning policies have “moved on” since then and that it would have insisted on 35 per cent affordable under current policies.

Cllr Helen Dennis, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, said: “It has been ten years since this scheme was approved and our policy and approach since then has moved on.

“Southwark now has policies in place for student schemes to deliver affordable student accommodation and

in non-nominated schemes, conventional affordable housing, going beyond the requirements of the London Plan.

“Under the terms of our new policy, we would have required a minimum of 35% affordable housing in this non-nominated scheme, and our recent track record in securing this through the planning process is strong.”

Both King’s College London and Carvill Ventures declined to comment.

Aysan Dennis, 64, who refuses to leave her beloved estate, thirteen years after its demolition began, has invited people to the ‘Fight 4 Aylesbury’ exhibition, beginning at 4pm on Friday, April 14.

Held at her flat in the Wendover block, it will feature photos, collages, mementos and audio-recordings documenting Aysan’s long struggle against redevelopment.

From April 14 to 23, there is a packed programme of historical talks, guided walks and poetry workshops, which can be viewed on the @Fight4Aylesbury Instagram account.

Aysan said: “It’s going to be a one-of-a-

kind exhibition which is showing off the fight that we’ve been going through.

“There will be leaflets, pictures - we’ve got lot os of documents and information that we are using. It’s telling our story… reflecting the councillors’ and campaigners’ story, it’s our perspective.”

Aysan, who moved into the flat in May 1993, and has long campaigned for refurbishment over redevelopment.

The 2,758-flat Aylesbury Estate was completed in 1977 as part of a huge slum clearance but less than thirty years later, in 2005, Southwark Council decided to demolish it.

The council argued redevelopment was the only viable option and that refurbishment would be too expensive.

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk The contents of a letter that reached its destination over 100 years late will be revealed at a history talk later this month.

In February, it emerged that Crystal Palace theatre director Finlay Glen, of Hamlet Road, had received a letter that was sent in 1916.

The mysterious note, which would have been written as The Battle of

the Somme was getting underway, grabbed international headlines.

And now, local historian Stephen Oxford will reveal the full contents of the letter, at an event, at 7.30pm, on Thursday, April 20, at the Upper Norwood Library.

The event is being organised by The Norwood Society and visitors can expect to learn more about the history underpinning the letter.

It was sent from Christabel Mennell, daughter of a tea merchant, to

Katie Marsh, wife of the local stamp magnate Oswald Marsh, and hints at an argument between the pair.

Christabel is understood to have sent the letter while holidaying in Bath and mentions feeling “quite ashamed of myself after saying what I did”.

She also says she had been “miserable here with a very heavy cold”.

prominent Georgian families.

People have speculated over why the letter took so long to arrive, with some suggesting it had spent over a century hidden somewhere in a sorting office.

The envelope has a stamp from the Sydenham sorting office, which was operating for over a century before it closed down in 2018.

Some people believe the letter was found while the office was being cleared out and somehow made its way back into mail circulation.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said at the time: “Incidents like this happen very occasionally, and we are uncertain what happened in this instance.

“We appreciate that people will be intrigued by the history of this letter from 1916, but we have no further information on what might have happened.”

‘Fabulous’ Waterloo girl Maggie celebrates her 100th birthday Four generations: Maggie’s family gather for her birthday last Saturday

By Isabel Ramirez isabel@southwarknews.co.uk Margaret ‘Maggie’ Horne, who worked alongside MPs and then ran a Peckham boozer, says her secret to old age is “behaving herself” as she celebrates her 100th birthday.

Wearing a sash saying ‘100 & Fabulous’ the former landlady told the News on her milestone day that she never smoked nor was a big drinker. She said it’s behaving herself that’s got her this far. “I’ve lived a good life and I never did anything I shouldn’t do,” she laughed.

Maggie was born on 8th April 1923, on Pearman Street in Waterloo and was one of eight siblings. She has lived in and around Southwark all her life and sat down for a chat with the News, as she celebrated turning 100 with her family around her.

Reminiscing on the last century Maggie explained she went to what was Waterloo Road School in SE1 and ‘loved’ it there. “I was a good student. I was too afraid to misbehave in case they caned me.”

At 16 she had to work to support the family, as her dad passed away just before the outbreak of World War II in 1939.

Throughout the war, they lived in Jubilee Buildings near Waterloo. Talking

to her grandson Tony Cain, 49, he said: “She experienced daily battles of rationing, recycling and cultivating food in allotments to feed her brothers and sisters.

“None of the kids were evacuated so they all stayed together.”

He added that Maggie worked in factories as part of the home front effort during the war.

Following this tough start, she got a job in the Foreign Office in the 1950s and worked there for nearly 30 years.

“I worked in communications and had to see to all the MPs,” she said. “I thoroughly enjoyed it - I met every MP you could think of. You name it, I’ve met them.

“I even met Prince Charles when he came in one time.”

In a full-circle moment, she now has a telegram from the current King, as is tradition, congratulating her on her special birthday: “I think he’s very nice actually - I reckon he’ll do a good job.”

During the ‘70s, she said she ran The

Bun House pub in Peckham. “No one caused much trouble,” she continued, “but if people got naughty - I used to like chucking them out. I wasn’t afraid to do it.”

The pub on 96 Peckham High Street no longer exists, it closed in 2012 and is now a Betfred betting shop.

Once she retired, she continued to work full-time in mail advertising until she was 87, which is what her family say has helped keep her mind active for so long.

She was and still is a big reader, getting

through at least a book a week.

For the last few years, she’s lived at Peartree Care Home in Sydenham, but for most of her life, she lived independently in Southwark.

Married for 48 years to her late husband, Maggie has two children, two grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

The Del Boy actor, 83, has since welcomed Abi Harris, 52, and her ten-year-old son Charlie into the family, even spending last Christmas together.

Sir David had a brief relationship with Abi’s mum, Jennifer Hill, when he was thirty, while performing in the stage production of Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood.

“To say it was a surprise is an understatement,” he told the Mirror.

“My wife, Gill, and daughter, Sophie, have been very supportive and understanding and have embraced Abi and welcomed her and her young son into her now wider family.”

Abi, who is also an actor, had her suspicions ever since finding out about her mum’s relationship and her hunch strengthened when friends pointed out she shared a striking similarity with Sir David.

Amazingly, the pair appeared on stage together in 2008, ignorant of their relationship, and a friend in the audience told Abi their noses were near-identical.

Years later, Abi wrote to Sir David asking for a paternity test and he agreed given his previous relationship with her mum.

Sir David was stunned to discover a positive match but is delighted: “On settling with the news, I am delighted that I am now able to get to know Abi

Murder investigation launched as man falls to his death five hours after a woman’s body was found in an Elephant and Castle flat

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Police have launched a murder investigation after a 27-year-old woman was found dead in an Elephant and Castle flat and a man fell to his death five hours later.

Officers rushed to an apartment building above the Sainsbury’s on Elephant Road, off New Kent Road, at around 4pm last Thursday, April 6, after receiving reports of a “disturbance”.

They found a woman suffering serious injuries who, despite the best efforts of paramedics, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they believed it was a “domestic-related incident”.

It has now emerged that a man known to the woman “fell from height” at New Change next to St Paul’s Cathedral five hours later at 8.43pm.

Once again, despite emergency services’ best efforts, the 31-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Next of kin have been informed and the Met Police has said it doesn’t believe there are any other people connected to the incidents.

‘unaffordable lease will put us at risk’

‘The council is asking for £25,000 for the cafe’s lease - but that just isn’t possible if we want to continue as a charity,’ said one of the owners of Burgess Sports EXCLUSIVE

By Isabel Ramirez isabel@southwarknews.co.uk Founders of a charity that runs out of a café in Burgess Park, which allows 700 kids a year from disadvantaged backgrounds to play sports, say they could face closure if the council insists on asking for what they say is an ‘unaffordable’ lease for their premises.

Burgess Sports, a charity that runs free sports clubs throughout the year for underserved families, say they are at risk after the council proposed a lease of £25,000 a year.

Since 2021 it has operated out of the Clubhouse Café in Burgess Park, with 100 per cent of the profits going towards providing activities and food for vulnerable local children.

“For the past two years, the Clubhouse Café has served the community, in creating a meeting place for them but crucially in funding the work of Burgess Sports to provide local children with a great start in life,” explained co-founder, Vernon Neve-Gashnunn.

Until now, it has operated out of the Clubhouse Café in Burgess Park, with 100 per cent of profits from the cafe going back into the charity.

Burgess Sports has not had a lease with the council. According to Vernon: “The building was leased to Burgess Park Tennis Club, who were responsible for maintaining the building and keeping the toilets open to the public.

“The tennis club allowed us to set up a café in the building. Rather than charging us rent, we paid them a percentage of any profits.”

But now they claim the council is wanting a re-signed lease - and is asking for £25,000 a year in their tender process.

“We submitted an application in February offering £10,000 in cash plus £20,000 of social value (worked out by the services they provide for the community). But they refused our offer and are asking instead for a £25,000 lease annually - which just isn’t financially possible. This would leave the café unable to produce enough funding for our charity and forced to move out of the borough,” he said.

They are claiming the council never cared before about making a profit for themselves from this business. “There was nothing here before,” Vernon continued, “but after seeing the success

we have made of it, council officers have decided to benefit from our work at the cost of the local community.”

He added that the loss of the café would not only have a financial impact on their charity, it will leave 13 people unemployed and locals without their favourite place to go.

After the News got in touch with the council Cllr Catherine Rose, the cabinet member for leisure, parks, streets and clean air said that they were now ‘pausing the matter’ and that the café will for the time being operate under their current agreement. She adds the council fully supports the work of Burgess Sports.

Cllr Rose said that current arrangements ‘started informally during the pandemic’ but that they must ‘put in place the long-term letting agreement for the tennis kiosk’. She added that the tendering process takes into account ‘social value’ as a ‘key part of our evaluation.’ But that due to a ‘confidentiality breach, the letting process has been compromised.’

The News has asked whether that means the council would re-consider Burgess Sports’ offer of £10,000 and

how long the process will now be.

But the word is beginning to spread amongst residents, who, like Marjorie Palanee, are ‘devastated’ at the prospect of the cafe closing. Marjorie told the News the café was the reason she moved to Camberwell. “I moved to the UK ten years ago, and I have never found a community spirit like the one in Burgess Park,” she said.

“I visited the café when I was deciding where to live and it was the main reason I came to live here.”

She said it is nice to go somewhere knowing the funds all go to a good cause.

“Hearing it might have to close is terrible.

We are so devastated,” she added.

In a statement to the News Cllr Rose said: “The council fully supports a kiosk in Burgess Park, and Burgess Sports are providing a service, valued by the local community, this is fully acknowledged by the council.

“The current arrangement started informally during the pandemic and we are now required to put in place the longterm letting agreement for the tennis kiosk, by legally securing an operator for the kiosk and the public toilets. This must be done via a fair and transparent

letting process. The social value of all those who tendered is included as a key part of our evaluation. We also ask for financial information to confirm that the rent for the kiosk, can be paid.

“This approach allowed for Burgess Sports and social enterprises of all types to have their wider community value fully taken into account rather than a purely commercial decision. The consideration of all these criteria was still underway last week and had not been concluded.”

“Unfortunately, due to a confidentiality breach, the letting process has been compromised. We have no choice but to pause matters until we’re certain that the process can be conducted in a way that’s fair for everyone and all the social enterprises involved”.

Among a range of other things, Burgess Sports runs free kids activities 12 weeks of the year, including after-school clubs and multi-sports holiday camps. They added that those who stand to suffer the most will be the 700 kids a year they serve.

By Isabel Ramirez isabel@southwarknews.co.uk Kingswood House, a historic Victorian mansion located in the heart of south Dulwich, first opened as a community centre in the 1950s but was forced to close during the pandemic.

Having undergone an extensive renovation, the Grade II listed building is now reopening its doors to the public as a community hub for the creative arts, aimed at nurturing and celebrating local talent.

Originally built in 1811, the mansion has a rich history and has been a

significant landmark in the area for generations.

In the 1890s, it was extended by John Lawson Johnston, the inventor of Bovril, and affectionately became known as Bovril Castle.

During World War One the house was used as a care home for Canadian soldiers and during World War Two the basements were modified into a bomb shelter.

In the 1950s it was turned into a community centre until it was forced to close during Covid-19.

The mansion house has been brought back to life by a not-for-profit organisation, Kingswood Arts, in

collaboration with Southwark Council, to restore the building to its original grandeur, while also being outfitted with modern amenities to support the needs of the creative community.

Throughout the year, it will also serve as a venue for weddings and private events, with all profits injected straight back into nurturing the creativity of the local community and continued restoration and upkeep of the mansion building.

From April 17 onwards, Kingswood Arts will launch its programme of free youth activities that will include dance classes, visual arts clubs, children’s Bookstart sessions, and holiday clubs.

The newly refurbished mansion boasts several spacious rooms that will serve as studios and workshop spaces for artists, writers, musicians, and other creatives.

The mansion will host regular exhibitions, performances, and cultural events, aimed at bringing together the local community and celebrating the rich diversity of talent in the area.

Last weekend, they hosted a free festival to celebrate the opening, which involved a Family Fun Day and the chance for visitors to learn the secrets of Kingswood House on a tour of the upgraded building.

Uni’s new building wins award for its sustainable renovation herbie@southwarknews.co.uk London South Bank University’s (LSBU) Hub building has won the Higher Education and Campus award at the Architects’ Journal Retrofit Awards.

The award recognises how the building’s recent renovation was carried out in a way that limited carbon emissions.

The LSBU Hub is the university’s largest building on the Elephant and Castle campus and was opened in the summer of 2022 after extensive refurbishment work, led by Architectural firm WilkinsonEyre.

The transformed space is now a stateof-the-art hub for collaborative learning

and engagement for everyone in the LSBU community, containing learning, sports, and catering facilities.

The existing structure of the original building was largely retained, rather than demolished, significantly reducing the building’s carbon emissions.

Rychard Scrase-Field, Group Director of Estates and Academic Environment at LSBU, said “The LSBU Hub is now at the centre of student life here at LSBU and to see the building recognised at the illustrious Architects’ Journal Awards is of no surprise to both staff and students at the university. jailed for 12 years for raping lone woman in Burgess Park in horrific ‘prolonged’ attack © Met Police

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A ‘violent predator’ has been jailed for raping a woman he’d just met in Burgess Park after begging her to drink with him.

David Joseph, 31, of no fixed address, was sentenced to twelve years imprisonment at Inner London Crown Court last Thursday, April 6.

He was found guilty of rape, sexual assault, intentional strangulation, robbery and possession of a class B drug (cannabis), after a trial at the same court on Friday, 24 February.

Detective Constable Olivia Broughton, the investigating officer from Central South’s Public Protection, said: “Joseph, is a dangerous, violent predator who carried out an atrocious, prolonged attack on a lone woman – who repeatedly begged him to stop. When the victim survivor bravely tried to fight back, he just used more violence on her to carry out his heinous crime.

“I’d like to commend the woman for the courage she has shown throughout the investigation and court process.

Joseph is now behind bars and off the streets of London thanks to her coming forward.”

The court heard how, in the early hours of Sunday, September 25, the woman bumped into and spoke to

Joseph, who she’d never met before, near Burgess Park.

He ‘drop-called’ the woman’s phone so she would have his number. She told officers that she did not save his number and did not intend on calling him back.

She told Joseph, who was pushing a pedal cycle, that she was leaving to get the bus and he said he was going in the same direction.

The court heard that Joseph repeatedly asked her to stop for a drink and she repeatedly refused,

before finally agreeing to stop for a quick drink.

They sat on a bench and Joseph tried to kiss her. She told him no and asked him to stop but then he held her hands behind her back, raping and sexually assaulting her, while she begged him

to stop.

The court heard that Joseph went on to strangle her while making comments like ‘stop struggling’ and ‘you’re a fighter aren’t you’.

The woman said she kept trying to run away and, on one occasion, Joseph pursued her and rugby tackled her to the ground.

The prolonged attack ended with Joseph stealing her two mobile phones and bank card before riding away on his bike.

The woman, injured and bleeding, ran to the main road to get help.

Officers attended and she was taken to hospital and later looked after by specialist officers.

Police had been called to the park off St George’s Way at 5.23am on Sunday, September 25. Detectives secured the crime scene and made urgent enquiries.

Joseph was quickly identified from when he drop-called the woman’s phone before the attack.

Officers attended the Southwark hostel where he was staying on Sunday, September 25, and arrested him.

DC Broughton said: “Tackling all forms of violence against women, including sexual assault, stalking and harassment, is a priority the Met and we will continue to work hard to bring people like Joseph to justice.”

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A Borough Market worker who went from supplying London’s top restaurants, and being mates with Jamie Oliver, to becoming homeless and an alcoholic, is back on his feet.

John Leavey, 55, found his drinking spiral out of control after his ex-partner died. But his life turned around when he met Alex Bigucci from the British Red Cross South East London homelessness project.

The charity helped John find accommodation, access his benefits, and persuaded him to open a bank account, signalling a new positive chapter in his life.

John, who now lives in supported living in Denmark Hill, said: “I’m glad I ended up here. I’ve got a TV in my room, I can chat to people if I want, I’m not tempted by drugs. I feel a bit more in control.”

Raised in north London, but having spent most of his life around Borough Market, John had struggled with alcohol misuse and homelessness ever since he split from his partner several years.

He worked cash-in-hand at the market, packing and delivering fruit and veg for some of London’s swankiest eateries.

John even became friendly with Jamie Oliver and has appeared in one of the

chef’s books and TV series.

But living without security was stressful and when his ex-partner suddenly passed away, John’s life fell apart.

His drinking intensified. He lost his job and, at times, he was so anxious he couldn’t answer the phone.

His health also deteriorated and, in July last year, he collapsed and ended up in St Thomas’ Hospital.

“I was staying at a friend’s flat,” he says.

“I started to get the shakes, so I went for some water, and then I passed out. Split my skull and broke my back. I was in hospital for three weeks. I knew I’d lost the flat, and I was really worried about the future. That’s when I met Alex and Stephen.”

Stephen Ohunta is a housing liaison worker wit the King’s Health Partners homeless health team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT).

Alex, on the other hand, is part of the British Red Cross South-East London Homeless Team, a fairly new area for the Red Cross.

Part of Alex’s job is to run social care support services that help people settle back into normal life after leaving hospital.

Working with GSTT, they helped John find his place in Denmark Hill which is specially designed to help people with alcohol issues.

Alex helped John get on top of his finances by opening a bank account. “He had to persuade me because I hadn’t been in the system for decades,” said John.

“But one day I lost my wallet at the food bank, with all my cash in it, and Alex said I needed a safer place for my money.

“I would never have done it on my own. I wouldn’t have had the confidence. It was a nerve-wracking thing. But now it’s up and running I can take my details to the Post Office.

For the first time in decades, John has access to benefits and a support network, and is even thinking about getting his own place in a few years’ time.

“Without the Red Cross I wouldn’t be here, I’d be out on the street. Now I’m fed, I’m warm, my drinking is under control, I’m learning to judge my money more carefully. I’ve got a GP and I’m taking care of myself better. A lot of that is thanks to Alex,” he said.

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. They are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. They enable vulnerable people in the UK and overseas to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. Police want to identify this man

The incident took place on South Lambeth Road, which runs between Vauxhall and Stockwell, between 10pm and 10.30pm on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

Police have urged the public to help identify this man to help with their investigation.

Lendlease opts for public showdown over a rejected office block

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Lendlease is set to fight Southwark Council’s decision to reject its application to build an eighteen-storey office block in Elephant and Castle.

The council refused planning permission for the Elephant Park development due to its “excessive height, mass and bulk”, with one councillor comparing it to Ayer’s Rock, in October last year.

Lendlease has now applied for an inquiry into the decision which would see a government inspector decide whether to overrule Southwark Council and let the build go ahead.

The inspector will make their decision based on relevant legislation and policies, evidence submitted, appeal documents, and any other relevant material.

Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, could override the inspector’s decision although this is rare.

If an inquiry does take place, it’s likely to begin after summer and Lendlease estimates it would take eight days.

The planning application was for Plot H1, the final plot of the highly controversial Elephant Park scheme built where the Heygate Estate once stood.

The office block, which councillors were asked to consider during the planning committee meeting on October 4, differed wildly from the planning site’s original purpose.

Under the Section 106 agreement, signed in 2013

between Southwark Council and Lendlease, Plot H1’s ‘principal land use’ was “residential” But, having built 2,689 homes on Elephant Park, with 25 per cent affordable, Lendlease had already fulfilled its housing obligation.

This allowed the developer to apply for 48,750 sqm of office space, almost ten times more than the 5,000 sqm outlined in the original masterplan.

In his concluding remarks on October 4, Committee Chair Cllr Livingstone said the application had been refused “due to the excessive height, mass and bulk of the application, causing harm to the character and appearance of Elephant Road, Elephant Park and Walworth Road”.

Mayor Sadiq Khan could have used his devolved powers to override Southwark Council’s decision after it was made but chose not to.

A spokesperson for Lendlease said: “We’ve been working in partnership with Southwark to deliver a thoughtful and community-led regeneration at Elephant Park for over a decade and have submitted an appeal regarding our application for a new office building.

“When complete it would have the potential to provide work for around 4,000 people, include a new community health hub, support the growing economy of independent retailers, first rate leisure amenities and world class education already in the surrounding area; and build upon the sustainability commitments already made across Elephant Park.”

I

n his Budget speech last month, the Chancellor explained that the economic outlook is not quite as bad as it might have been and heralded that as a cause for celebration.

He claimed that his plan is delivering the country from the difficulties we are facing, as if those difficulties were nothing to do with him or the Government of which he is a part.

We must be clear: the current situation is dire, and responsibility for it rests squarely with the Conservative Party that has been in power for the past 13 years.

According to the OECD, we have the weakest economy in the G7; we are the only country that will see negative growth. We are seeing the biggest decline in living standards since records began.

The covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have had global impacts, but here in the UK they have exposed the underlying weaknesses in our economy and public services, which are the consequences of more than a decade of government by the Conservative party.

Along the way, the Conservatives have inflicted entirely new damage of their own making, installing Liz Truss, a Prime Minister who was content to send inflation and

mortgage bills spiralling and the economy into freefall, completely unnecessarily, in pursuit of her right-wing economic dogma.

This Government have neglected public servants, so many of whom have been at the frontline of the covid-19 pandemic—nurses, doctors, railway workers, teachers, paramedics, postal workers—who are now so

demoralised, underpaid and burned out that we are seeing the biggest wave of industrial action since the 1980s.

The challenges we face are the result of the Conservatives’ political decisions and priorities.

The state of our country is their record—and it is a shameful record of crumbling public services, struggling high streets, falling wages, increasing

poverty and deprivation, and declining mental and physical health.

This Budget tells us that the Conservatives’ priorities are all wrong and they do not know how to fix what they have broken.

We need urgent action to bring down energy bills by keeping the price cap, insulating millions of homes, investing in onshore wind and solar power.

We need a new vision for our public services which values staff and takes their concerns about pay seriously and invests in thousands more doctors and nurses to address the crisis in our NHS. If the Conservatives don’t know how to fix the mess they have made, it is time they called a general election to make way for a Labour government who can.

Southwark is a tourist hotspot so let’s make the most of it!

D

epending on whom you ask, tourists can be a blessing or curse. Squeezing past a gawping holidayer standing on the wrong side of the escalator is annoying, but they do boost local business. Either way, they’re here to stay, so we should make the most of them.

That’s why a tourist tax sounds like a good idea. Hotel prices are already sky-high, so £1 added to people’s bills is hardly going to be an issue. The Southwark Lib Dems, who have proposed the move, said the money could be reinvested in local high streets and businesses. Take one look at the barren shops along East Street Market and the Blue, and it’s obvious that investment is sorely needed.

Southwark hasn’t always been a tourist hotspot. It’s been a gradual evolution that arguably began in 1951 when the Festival of Britain saw the South Bank developed. Since then, we’ve seen the London Eye, Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe and The Shard spring up.

Our borough has changed considerably over the last few decades and now its policy on tourism needs to catch up.

Affordable housing quotas have to apply to all developments - without exception

T

his week, we reveal how a student halls got planning permission with just 11 per cent affordable housing. It shows just how important it is that Southwark Council sticks to its policy of 35 per cent affordable housing on all new developments.

In this instance, King’s College London (KCL) was able to convince councillors that the need for new student housing was great enough to supersede the need for affordable housing. But with over 17,000 people on the housing waiting list, there is no room for exceptions. We need affordable housing, and fast.

Southwark says its planning policies have “moved on” and that it would insist on 35 per cent affordable housing nowadays. This is reassuring, and affordable housing policies are indeed stronger.

But the fact is that there was also a policy on 35 per cent affordable housing back in 2013. KCL got around that criterion so it’s not inconceivable that that could happen again.

35 per cent affordable housing is not particularly ambitious. Sadiq Khan has previously stated his preference of 50 per cent. Neighbouring Lewisham has a strategic target of 50 per cent. So if Southwark is going to set the bar so low, it should commit to achieving it.

Adapted from the popular 1984 British film ‘A Private Function’, Betty Blue Eyes debuted at the Novello Theatre in 2011 where it earned itself a number of Olivier nominations including Best New Musical,writes Bella Christy...

Twelve years later, with a backdrop of success, The Union Theatre and By the Sea Productions present their own version.

Director Sasha Regan crafted a production that sat along the lines of whimsical and melodramatic. Whilst set during a time of post-war austerity and dealing with sombre themes such as hunger and corruption, the production kept a light and humorous tone that had the audience giggling throughout.

A particularly chucklesome character is Mother Dear, who, at 74, is a right greedy grump. Jayne Ashley’s performance had me cackling with laughter, especially during the scene where she mistakenly believes that her daughter Joyce and son-in-law Gilbert are plotting her death.

This scene sets the stage for the equally hilarious and a personal favourite number of mine, ‘Pig No Pig’, where Ashley’s vocals are allowed to showcase.

At the beginning, I just couldn’t quite wrap my head around why all these women were lusting for the incredibly awkward and (I’m sorry, but) unsexy Gilbert Chilvers. The number ‘Magic Fingers’, full of naughty innuendos, had me raising my eyebrows in confusion.

These women couldn’t possibly be talking about the fumbling and nervous man in front of me. Though, upon

reflecting on my history knowledge, I came to the realisation that there was a significant shortage of men following World War II, so the presentation of horny women was not at all inaccurate. What is more, is that Gilbert undergoes some remarkable character development. His vulnerability grows in Act II, particularly during ‘The Kind of Man I Am’. The audience begins to understand his aspiration to be more

what’s on self-assured as well as the love he holds for his wife.

There were unfortunately a number of teething issues: a wrong lighting cue, a couple of stumbled lines and mid-show fire alarm, yet the actors on stage did not let this affect their performance, and you could perhaps argue that it added to the chaotic comedy of the show…

The acting style had elements of both melodrama and slapstick comedy,

which worked well to some extent, but I yearned for some more contrast.

Particularly during the more serious scenes involving Joyce and Gilbert’s relationship issues, I did not feel emotionally invested. There was no pulling on my heartstrings. Additionally, some of the ‘dramatic pauses’ did not create the intended impact and I was left hoping for more emotional weight.

All things considered, I enjoyed

watching Betty Blue Eyes. The production was fun, light-hearted and silly, it had the audience smiling and laughing throughout.

Soaking up Spring sunshine in Greenwich Park before venturing to Greenwich Theatre we take a moment to breathe in the clear air and reflect on how lucky we are to live in a city with so many green spaces and cultural delights, writes Ed, Ingrid, Frida and Woody Gray...

‘I love these beautiful bird sounds, it really feels like we are in the rarest of woods’, said Woody.

We discovered that trees talk to each other, much like us, chatting through their roots - a world wood web - and that the seed must learn to wait for the right moment to become a tree - very good advice for all young saplings looking to become oaks: don’t rush, live in the moment, bury your screen, tune into natural vibes and breathe.

I could sense reviewer Frida was at peace, growing imperceptibly slowly and silently beside me as I held her hand. ’It’s very chillaxing’, she mused.

It wasn’t long before we set sail for Greenwich again, back on the 188, on diversion, journeying far and wide through the seas of traffic in the wilds of South East London. Once inside, the house lights revealed a minimal stage set, the palace of King Shahryār, home to Scheherazade and her insomniac sister.

This classic compendium of folk tales has been given new life by an ensemble cast from Dragonboy Productions directed by Eliot Giuralarocca. The misogynist King, working out his issues with women in the worst possible ways, meets his match when feisty Scheherazade takes him to task through

her never-ending tales. With her wit and wisdom and gutsy girl power, she wraps him up in words until he is so hooked on the next punch line that her execution date disappears over the horizon.

It was a slightly sleepy start but once we were underway Dragonboy Productions threw everything into this version of the Tales. Puppetry, silhouettes, song and dance from the very talented actor-musicians had the audience laughing out loud.

After the interval, Scheherazade introduced us to Sinbad and his fantastic voyages, imaginatively brought to life with props and puppets.

‘I loved the puppets, especially the wicked old man,’ revealed Woody.

‘I would love to travel on adventures like Sinbad and meet strange and wonderful people,’ countered his big sister. And it wasn’t long before we were back on the 188, grateful for the thousand and one blessings of theatre and reflecting on a line from the play ‘We are all just passengers, passing through.’

Family review: The Green shoots gratify theatre’s Spring Festival Spring has definitely arrived in Greenwich Theatre with a new season that offers much for families and we are here to sample two plays, the epic Middle Eastern Tales from a Thousand and One Nights, and Breathe, the journey of an acorn from sapling to mighty oak.

Our two young sapling reviewers, Frida and the aptly named Woody, plant themselves in the comfy seats of the stalls and the house lights go down to reveal three actors resplendent in wood-effect costume. We were introduced to a miniature forest, brought to life using innovative live camera work enlarged into big-screen action. We journeyed through the life of the forest, season by season, adventuring with a little acorn boy puppet called Seedling- a seed lucky enough to make it from sapling to oak.

The production was informative, through songs and puppetry we learnt about the 600-plus species of birds

Playing With The Panic

You have come to see Mike Nelson’s Extinction Beckons but you have found yourself in a storage room, red darkroom lights buzzing. There are stacks of doors, strange bubble wrapped objects, the remnants of a city, or a set. Before you realise quite what you are doing, you are assembling the matter in your mind, searching for clues.

You cannot stay too long in the storage room, you can’t escape the unsettling feeling that you have trespassed into someone else’s space, that whoever left this mess might come back and find you alone scouring for answers. So you push on to the next gallery; an attendant stands by, a familiar figure that might ground you in the strangeness of Nelson’s worlds.

In this space is a maze of interconnected rooms and corridors.

An abandoned cutting room with a rusty pair of scissors, a school desk with a child’s name engraved, a captain’s bar, a travel agent’s office.

In each corridor the doors seem to multiply, spitting you back out into strange halls. You bump into other visitors trying to find a way out, both walking into the same room several times. After a while you are panicked, yet somehow also playing.

Wherever you go you are aware of decay, of things both dead and dying – spaces slowly ravaged by time.

But there is a playfulness too, everywhere you go you breathe life back into what is left. You can’t help it; you are reconfiguring matter into meaning like the old biker gang Nelson

On entering the Aladdin Sane: 50 Years exhibition you are immediately surrounded by photographs of icons from another age that acclimatise you to the work of (Brian) Duffy before you continue to the next space where you are met with images of David Bowie - many of them larger than life that hint at the man himself, writes Michael Holland...

The Bowie images overwhelm and attract all the attention, but this exhibition is not all about Bowie but about the process that Duffy and his team went through to create the iconic Aladdin Sane album cover in 1973, working to a brief from Bowie’s manager, Tony Defreis, to make the cover as expensive as possible so that the record label would market it well to get their money back.

Pierre LaRoche did the makeup with the only prop being Bowie’s body.

The magic was made with the camera and the printing process.

Through photos and text, we discover how the makeup took up most of the time for the shoot, but once Duffy was happy with the look he quickly run off just 24 images.

imagines in The Amnesiacs. The gang take foam and make a face, take a stick and make a snake. Perhaps, like the bikers, your creations are uncanny perversions, not the thing but the memory of the thing. Perhaps, nothing will return to how it was, but it will return.

Nelson is involved in this strange resurrection too. He is hesitant to call the exhibition a retrospective, which sounds too finite, preferring the word survey. If you have seen his work before, this show will not be a homecoming but a fresh start. Each piece has been reimagined rather than carefully recreated – the first room is the wreckage of his exhibition at the Venice Biennale. At the Hayward, Nelson invites you into the creative process, starting with the storeroom and ending with a recreation of his old studio from which a wire grid spreads out across the room, filled with grim cement casts of old masks.

Nelson’s show is a devastating and dazzling psychological exercise more interested in play than in didacticism.

But Aladdin Sane: 50 Years ultimately tells Duffy’s story. He was a photographer who had worked with leading fashion magazines for years, and with the top stars and models of the day.

The exhibition allows us to see his front covers and his photographs of the famous. In fact, we learn much more about Duffy than we do about David Bowie.

Nevertheless, Aladdin Sane: 50 Years will very much appeal to Bowie fans, fashion acolytes, photography enthusiasts and anyone with an eye for creative art.

The exhibition is complemented by a new book by Chris Duffy, Aladdin Sane 50: The definitive celebration of Bowie’s most iconic album and music’s most famous photograph – with unseen images, released by Welbeck at £40 hardback.

The back cover has a quote from Andy Warhol: “The idea is not to live forever but to create something that will.”

Duffy and Bowie certainly did that.

Skipper says visitors ‘hit the ground running’

By Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY CAPTAIN Rory Burns said he “can’t really fault the effort” after the defending LV= Insurance County champions drew their opening game of the 2023 season at Lancashire.

Surrey had set Lancashire a nominal target of 444 to win at Old Trafford. But after resuming on 37-0, the hosts dug in determinedly.

Josh Bohannon’s battling century ensured the hosts escaped with a draw against a frustrated Surrey despite the visitors dominating the first three days of this hard-fought contest.

Surrey were only able to claim three wickets in reply to England hopeful Bohannon’s belligerent knock of 108 off 187 balls, on his 26th birthday.

That hundred, combined with an unbeaten 56 from Steven Croft, helped Lancashire bat out the day with something to spare to close on 247-3.

Lancashire started the final day where they let off with captain Keaton Jennings and fellow opener Luke Wells exuding confidence and calm at the crease as they safely negotiated the first hour.

Fresh from a brilliant century on the third day, England wicketkeeper Ben Foakes proved to be the catalyst for a Surrey breakthrough when his decision to stand up to the wicket to counter the aggressive wanderings of Jennings seemed to unnerve the skipper.

Cramped for room and momentarily hesitating, Jennings was undone when he played on to his stumps off a Jordan Clark delivery for 16 with Surrey delighted to halt the opening stand at 65.

At the other end, Wells had earlier raised hopes of a ‘Bazball’ style run chase when he clipped Dan Worrall off his legs for six, but he was soon following Jennings to the dressing room after pulling Kemar Roach straight to Worrall at fine leg for 45.

“The way we’ve gone about our business and to hit the ground running like that and be right where we wanted to be at the start of day four has been pretty impressive,” Burns said.

“I can’t really fault the effort. There have been some very good individual performances over the four days. It was solid but there was a bit of panache in there.

“The next challenge is to back up that performance and go about things in the same way.”

Bohannon said: “The pitch didn’t have a great deal in it for the seamers but the way we thought against an attack like that in the second innings was really good.

“A lot of us got in in the first innings, myself included. We chucked it away when it could have been a big first innings score so there is a little bit of frustration there.

“We talked all winter about how we’re obviously playing really good cricket to have come second in all formats last season. There are little ‘onepercenters’ here and there which we are trying to get better at.’

Scotney ‘heartbroken’ after removal from Dublin undercard

Scotney had earlier tweeted, “Boxing stinks”. Lewisham’s Scotney, 25, was set to challenge for the world belt in just the seventh fight of her unbeaten professional career.

Northampton’s Cameron then released a statement of her own,

though it raised more questions than it answered about the situation.

“A few years ago I almost walked away from the sport I love because of what I went through with my team,” Cameron said.

“I would have hoped that she would have understood the situation and how important our mental health is going into fights like these, especially as the away fighter in Dublin where Katie is hailed as a national treasure, the last thing I need is more intimidation.

“It brings me to this point where I am

in the biggest fight of my life.

“It has not been an easy road and it has not been an easy decision for my team to make, but they have to protect me in this situation and I have to protect myself.

“I am sorry this impacts Ellie, this is not about her, and even though I don’t appreciate being publicly bullied and shamed into trying to change the decision last night, I really do wish her well moving forward and know that there are big opportunities around the corner for her.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk PECKHAM TOWN were brought quickly back down to earth on Easter weekend after they followed up a win at top-of-thetable Red Velvet on Saturday with a defeat against Bromleians on Monday.

Mary Phillip’s side welcomed Red Velvet to The Menace Arena in their first game of the weekend but were in no mood to give their visitors an easy time as they went in front on three minutes through Jacob Kemp.

It was Peckham who should have extended their lead but Camilo Andres Nieva and Kieran Dowding missed good chances.

In the 58th minute, Hamid Bangura went through one-on-one only for the ball to bobble just as he was shooting and the effort went over.

A the other end a minute later, Town goalkeeper George Legg produced a brilliant save to claw away a deflected shot, the moment even earning applause from the visiting bench.

Peckham doubled their advantage on 63 minutes when Andres Nieva crossed for Bangura to finish.

The visitors got back into it after being awarded a penalty. Legg saved Red Jenkins’ spot-kick but the ball rebounded to the Red Velvet player and this time he found the back of the net.

There were eight minutes of added-time but Phillip’s side saw it out to claim a big scalp.

On Monday, Peckham led 2-1 at Bromleians at half-time after goals from Fareid Yassein and Tidi Barry.

But the hosts roared back in the second half to win 4-2.

Peckham need seven points from their remaining seven games to preserve their Kent County League Premier Division status.

Town travel to Kings Hill this Saturday for a crucial fixture.

Peckham are three points ahead of their next opponents. Kick-off is at 2.45pm.

Hamlet rise to Easter occasion Hakan Hayrettin’s side resurrect their survival chances

Hakan Hayrettin’s side followed up their victory in a must-win game against relegation rivals Cheshunt at Champion Hill on Good Friday with a 1-1 Bank Holiday Monday draw at Hemel Hempstead.

Dulwich were moments away from taking six points from the two fixtures but Charlee Hughes equalised for Hemel in the fifth minute of addedtime after Sanchez Ming’s 85th-minute goal.

Hayrettin was delighted with the win against Cheshunt, saying “to a man, every single one of them was fantastic”.

That result moved Dulwich out of the bottom four as they changed places with their opponents.

With the two sides in such perilous

positions ahead of the weekend, it was understandably nervy in the first half.

Both teams were set up in compact 3-5-2 systems, seeking solid defensive displays to build from.

The Hamlet were marginally the better of the two teams in the first 45 minutes. Striker George Porter had a huge chance to open the scoring sixteen minutes in. Joe Felix did well to chest the ball into the path of Conor Lawless who controlled and squeezed a pass in behind for Porter, but one-onone with goalkeeper Adam Desbois the forward could only stab his effort wide.

Otherwise chances were few and far between. Felix had a low drive which was well held by Desbois and Lawless, who is on loan from Luton Town, demonstrated a few fantastic touches in tight midfield areas.

The second half was slightly more open. Dulwich, as in their last home game, switched to a 4-3-3 formation and looked much more threatening.

Danny Mills looped a header back across goal for captain Jack Holland but he couldn’t keep his header down.

At the other end, defender Isaac Pitblado smashed a free-kick from a decent position over the bar and Dulwich goalkeeper Charlie Grainger was booked for handling the ball outside of his area.

The crucial goal arrived in the 57th minute. Ming did well down the right before he found substitute Johl Powell in space on the edge of the Cheshunt box. The former Charlton youngster took a touch to set himself before lashing the ball low inside the near post with real power. Desbois got a hand on it and will feel he should have kept it out.

The Ambers had to respond but would not break away from their direct style of play. Striker Alfie Cue, who was largely feeding off scraps, nearly silenced Champion Hill when he brilliantly chested and volleyed in one motion from 25 yards – the ball dipping just over Grainger’s crossbar.

The final chance of the game predictably came from a set-piece.

In the 94th minute, a melee of bodies attacked a high Cheshunt corner

with the ball spinning towards the Dulwich goal. Thankfully for the home supporters, Quade Taylor was wellplaced on the line to head clear. The final whistle sounded moments later.

It was Dulwich’s first win in five games and came after Hayrettin apologised to supporters after their 4-0 defeat at Dartford in their previous game.

“I’m happy with the result and I’m happy with the performance too, it was a nervy game but we did the job and that’s all that matters right now,” Hayrettin said.

The Hamlet had the rare opportunity to train twice in a week before a game.

Hayrettin added: “It makes a massive difference. The boys were in really, really good form this week, exceptional form, and that does help.”

The Hamlet are 20th, three points above Cheshunt who are in the last relegation place. Cheshunt however have a game in hand and a goaldifference advantage of nine.

Dulwich are back at Champion Hill this Saturday when they play fifteenthplace Taunton at 3pm.

Also in the Premier Division, Stansfeld lost 1-0 to Rusthall on Monday, Louie Clarke’s penalty just before half-time enough for the hosts to take the points.

Last Saturday, the Stans had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Phoenix Sports. Joe Matthews opened the scoring on 73 minutes before Ryan Sawyer’s goal three minutes from time earned the away side a point.

Both Fisher and Stansfeld have little left to play for in the league this season.

The Stans are ninth with 50 points from 36 games. Fisher are in twelfth with 46 points from 35 games.

Millwall have picked up just two points from their last four Championship games

AFTER AN impressive performance on Good Friday, it was pivotal that Millwall started to record some positive results to boost their playoff hopes.

A 2-2 draw between Huddersfield Town and Blackburn Rovers earlier in the afternoon was good for the Lions, as it meant that they would keep their place in the top six regardless of whether or not they managed to win at the MKM Stadium.

They were awarded two free-kicks early on in the game but failed to capitalise. The first was headed over the bar by Shaun Hutchinson, with the second punched clear

by Karl Darlow as far as Ozan Tufan, who found space to break down the left. The Lions tracked back just in time to break up the counter, but it started a lengthy period where Hull dominated the ball but failed to create many clear-cut chances.

The Tigers played with a swagger not befitting of a side at the bottom of the division, with Jean Michael Seri picking up the ball on the edge of the area and breezing past Zian Flemming. It opened up space down the middle for Tufan to cut onto his right foot and take aim, curling a deflected shot into the gloves of George Long.

Billy Mitchell was presented with a chance to open the scoring, having returned to the starting lineup for the first time in almost two months due to an ankle injury. As Oliver Burke’s cross towards Tom Bradshaw was cleared, the midfielder picked up the ball and fired a powerful

They had two even better chances just before the half-hour mark. Burke brought down a long ball inside the box, cut inside and fired a shot at Darlow, which Hull cleared just before it could reach Bradshaw on the other side of the box. A couple of minutes later, George Honeyman played Billy Mitchell around the left side with a neat overlap, allowing him to cross into the penalty area for Burke to take aim once again, rifling his shot against the crossbar.

The Millwall players were adamant that the ball had crossed the line, but they did not let that moment of immense frustration get to them. Jake Cooper headed over the

crossbar from a Honeyman free-kick in the 31st minute, it was clear that Millwall were thoroughly on top in the game. Hutchinson and Danny McNamara both fired wide from close range shortly before the break, with the two sides going in level.

It was clear that the Lions had to capitalise after a largely dominant first half, but they were fortunate not to be 1-0 down just seconds after the restart when a testing cross from the right was cleared narrowly past the post by Shaun Hutchinson. Hull threatened from the resulting corner but were unable to find the back of the net.

Nine minutes later, they came close to opening the scoring once again when Ryan

Longman picked up the ball, cut inside and looped an effort over the crossbar in what was the Tigers’ best period of the game.

Unlike Millwall, Liam Rosenior’s men managed to take advantage of their dominance with an impressive piece of individual skill from Adama Traore, although Gary Rowett was left fuming with his side’s defending as they left the substitute unmarked on the edge of the area. This allowed him to switch the ball onto his left foot and curl a low effort into the bottom corner, beating Long to give his team the lead.

Supporters packed out The Den for an early kick-off, despite the fixture being shown live on Sky Sports.

More than 18,000 fans created an incredibly hostile atmosphere, with the Lions almost capitalising in the opening stages of the clash.

Tom Bradshaw and Zian Flemming combined in the middle of the park, allowing the latter to chip a ball

over the Luton back line to play Oliver Burke through on goal. The Werder Bremen loanee looked to round Ethan Horvath, but the US international stole the ball off him at the last second.

The noise in SE16 ramped up as Millwall threatened from a free-kick, only for Cooper to head the ball to Flemming in an offside position.

The Lions had their first penalty shout of the game in the eighteenth minute when Murray Wallace played a through ball down the left for Bradshaw, who was held back inside the box and forced to fire a scuffed shot at Horvath, winning a corner instead of a spot-kick.

Ten minutes later, the hosts found more space down the right to attack with Oliver Burke, who breezed past Amari’i Bell before cannoning his cross off Tom Lockyer for a corner.

Andreas Voglsammer tried to whip it onto the head of Bradshaw, but the Hatters were able to clear.

Gary Rowett’s men were not done there. Ryan Leonard’s fierce shot from distance forced a save from Horvath before Murray Wallace headed the resulting corner over the

bar on the half-hour mark, but Luton began to grow into the game.

One of their best chances came 10 minutes before the break, when Cooper pulled down his man to give away a free-kick around 25 yards out. Marvelous Nakamba dinked a deflected shot into the box, with the ball bouncing out to Elijah Adebayo, who flicked it past the post.

They did come out looking better after the break, however, although the best chance went Millwall’s way as Cooper headed the ball onto the roof of the net from a George Saville free-kick shortly before the hourmark.

A few minutes later, they had their best chance of the game as Voglsammer picked up a long ball and raced through on goal. However, he was closed down quickly and forced to turn back on himself, spinning back around to fire a low shot into the gloves of Horvath. He then went on to curl a free-kick over the bar in the 77th minute after George Saville was fouled on the edge of the area, with Millwall looking the most likely to win the game.

It was Luton who finished strongest,

however, as they hit the Lions with two shots on target late on. The first came from Carlton Morris, who spun and smacked a powerful half-volley into the gloves of Long, with Alfie Doughty firing the second into the gloves of the goalkeeper.

As Rowett sent bodies forward in search of a winner, Cooper found himself in the midst of the action. He was brought down twice by Lockyer in the box, initially being pulled down by the waist for what looked like a blatant penalty. In stoppage time, the Luton centre-back jumped on top of Cooper yet another clear spot-kick, but they were denied once again, much to the frustration of Rowett after the game.

Millwall skipper reveals run-in message EXCLUSIVE

The Lions are currently sat fifth in the table but have seen their lead on the chasing pack cut after a run of four games without a win and without a goal.

Their form has certainly seen their confidence knocked ahead of a big game at home to Preston North End on Saturday, particularly after their 1-0 defeat to Hull City on Easter Monday.

Gary Rowett’s side will likely need to win three or four matches before the end of the campaign to qualify for the play-offs, and Hutchinson is optimistic that they will achieve it.

The captain has admitted that he has shared a message of positivity with his teammates, with their performances giving them a reason to be hopeful of achieving their goal this season.

“My message is normally that we are where we are because of what we’re doing and what we’re good at,” he told the News.

“If we go too far from what got us there, who’s to know if it’s going to work?

Then I think we’d be a little bit deflated.

“Looking at the way we played, yes the

result was frustrating but there were a lot of positives to take. If we were to play that game out again a hundred times, we definitely would’ve won 90 percent of them easily. Even if we spoke to their manager, he would probably

agree.

“It’s frustrating, but I’d rather be in a situation where we’re creating stuff and playing well rather than the other way round. We’ve still got it in our hands and we’ve got some good fixtures

coming up.

“If we don’t make it, that’s on us and we fall short, but I’m confident with the players we’ve got in the group and that, with the way we’re setting up, it’s enough to get us over the line.”

The Lions picked up just one point from their two matches, drawing 0-0 with Luton Town at The Den before losing 1-0 away to Hull City.

Results elsewhere have kept them fifth in the table, but the chasing pack have managed to cut the gap heading into the final five games of the season.

Rowett does not believe that Millwall’s blip will derail their playoff push, albeit that many consider the Good Friday and Easter Monday matches to be a defining period in the

football calendar. The manager has stressed that it is the same as playing on a Saturday and a Tuesday, although he admits that his side will need to improve their results in the coming weeks to achieve their goal.

“Everyone else pinpoints how important Easter is,” he explained.

“I’ll say the same things after every game, I’ll never say Easter is so much more important.

“I’ll always say that we’ve got two games in three games, it’s no different to a Saturday and Tuesday.

It’s not different to facing Preston and Birmingham.

“As the games start to close in and draw down, of course each one feels more important, particularly if you don’t win it.

“That’s what it is. We know where

we’re at, we know what we’ve got to do.

“When I was managing Derby, we had six games left, we lost three on the spin and everybody was going absolutely apoplectic, I’m sure they were going mad on social media.

“You’ve got to hold your nerve, and we ended up winning two games, drawing one and finishing in the top six. You’ve just got to be calm.

“I can’t blame the players, they’ve performed really, really well again.

It’s just that last little bit of quality where, with a team like ours, those moments will always hinge on.

“If we created nothing I’d be disappointed, but we created quite a lot in the last three or four games and we need to start scoring goals.”

Millwall defender talks through his return to action and Charlie Cresswell’s improvement before nightmare injury EXCLUSIVE

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL CAPTAIN Shaun Hutchinson has not had an easy season.

While the Lions have been flying on the pitch, the 32-year-old has struggled off it. His performances have been consistent as ever, but injuries have played their part, having played in just 23 of his side’s 41 league games so far this season.

“It’s been a bit of a stop-start season injury wise,” he told the News.

“I didn’t spend too much time on the bench because circumstances meant that I wasn’t able to get myself back in the team, but obviously this time round, [Charlie] Cresswell has come in and done a brilliant job.

“I spoke to the gaffer numerous times and agreed that I’d obviously love to be playing, but he took his chance and took it well. I had to be patient and there as captain to help

the boys along.

“Obviously he’s taken a bad eye knock and I’m back in. It’s just important that I keep myself fit and ready so I can put on as good a show as I can on Saturday.

“I got a bit of cramp in the first game back against Luton but felt alright yesterday. I feel pretty fit and healthy for the run-in and I’m looking forward to the next five games.”

Cresswell’s recent injury was brutal, but it is not the first time he has suffered such a knock in a Millwall shirt this season. The 20-year-old came out on the worse end of a brutal tackle from Oscar Estupinan in his side’s stalemate against Hull City at The Den in November, although his fractured eye socket that he suffered against West Brom at the start of April looks to be much more severe.

It shows that he will not shy away from a challenge, which is certainly an admirable trait, but Hutchinson believes that it is an important part of being a defender that is common in Championship football.

“It’s what being a centre-half is, to be honest,” he chuckled.

“If you’re not willing to do that, you’re probably playing in the wrong position.

I certainly wouldn’t want a centre-half playing for me that didn’t put his head where it hurts.

“He’s a brave lad and he’s obviously been caught a couple of times, but that’s part and parcel of football. If you ask any centre-half, they’ve probably had three or four concussions in their career, so that’s the way it is.”

To keep the club captain out of the starting lineup is a huge statement of Cresswell’s quality, especially at such a young age. His performances have been exceptional, earning him consecutive NewsAtDen Player of the Month awards for February and March.

It came after a tough start to his time at The Den where his mistakes and a change in formation saw him dropped from the team and even the squad, but his improvement has been clear and Hutchinson believes that he will turn into a top-level defender in years to come.

“When he first came as a young lad, he played a few games but not too many,” the skipper explained.

“You’re always eager to impress and you play without any fear at all. I think he’d be the first to admit that he made a few errors here and there, but we spoke to him and he’s been speaking to the gaffer, so he’s realised himself that he needs to cut out a few little errors and there’s no doubt that he’ll be a top, top player.

“For his age, he’s doing a great job and, while he’s only on loan now, he’s managed to cut out those errors and has been really good in that last run of games.

“Unfortunately, he took a bad head knock and will be missing for some time, but that’s why the gaffer has invested in a pretty big, competitive squad this year. We’ve got a solid bench that we maybe haven’t had in the past, and it’s important that everyone stays fit.

“Even with Lenny last week, things can change so fast. You need to be ready to step up at this point of the

season, especially when every point matters.”

Millwall is, crucially, a fantastic club for young players to develop, but even by their high standards, the club did not expect such a big improvement from Cresswell in such a short space of time.

Confidence has been key for him, as has a consistent run of games, but Hutchinson believes that adapting to the Lions’ style of play has been crucial in helping him to become one of the top centre-backs in the Championship in the second half of the campaign.

“At Millwall, we’re a team that wants to take risks in the right areas,” he said.

“It’s probably why we have such a solid defensive record season-onseason, because we don’t want to be known as a team that gives the ball away in their box and lets teams score.

We want to be solid and we want to take the risks in the right areas.

“Maybe Leeds do it a bit differently, I don’t know, but the mistakes have been cut out and he’s been pretty solid of late.”

Preston’s late pressure sets up showdown at The Den Lions facing do-or-die situation to keep fate in their own hands

The Lilywhites were sat in twelfth place and just six points off the play-offs, but their form was wretched. They had lost six of their previous eight games after suffering defeat at Turf Moor and looked to be in freefall heading into a vital part of the season.

Nobody expected things to improve in such dramatic fashion, however, with Preston suffering just one defeat in their nine matches since being beaten by Vincent Kompany’s side, winning four of their last five games.

It means that they are now level on points with Millwall in fifth and Blackburn Rovers in sixth heading into their trip to The Den this weekend, knowing that a win will see them leapfrog the Lions into the top six regardless of how their promotion rivals get on.

league games, although they are higher in the league now than when they started their barren run. With Norwich City, Coventry City and West Brom failing to capitalise on Millwall’s slip up, they have been able to maintain their advantage heading into the final five games.

That being said, the gap is now much slimmer, and defeat in SE16 could drop the Lions as far down as ninth in the table

if results elsewhere go against them.

Defending has not been a major issue for them, however, as the main weakness has come in front of goal. Tom Bradshaw and Zian Flemming have both struggled in recent weeks while wide players such as Oliver Burke, Duncan Watmore, Andreas Voglsammer and George Honeyman have failed to contribute to goals and assists since the end of the

international break. At least a handful of them will need to step up if they are to turn things around and guide Millwall to their highest league finish since 2002.

They will have to take on Preston without a number of key players, with Callum Styles [quad] and Aidomo Emakhu [hamstring] set to miss the remainder of the season. Rowett revealed that Ryan Leonard [groin] will likely

be ruled out for the next three weeks, with the versatile midfielder targeting a return against Blackpool at the end of the month, while Charlie Cresswell is set to miss four to five weeks with a fractured eye socket.

There are also concerns about George Honeyman, who injured his hamstring in the early stages of Monday’s defeat to Hull City.

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT is confident that Millwall’s troubles in front of goal will improve in their final games, but believes that his wide players will need to contribute more in the final third if they are to do so.

The Lions have failed to find the back of the net in any of their last four games despite registering 68 shots, with eighteen of those hitting the target for a total xG [expected goals] of 5.18.

The manager highlighted that both Tom Bradshaw and Zian Flemming have struggled in the last few weeks, but stressed that the club’s wide players need to do more to support them with goals and assists. The pair have found the back of the net 27 times between them so far this season, accounting for more than half of the club’s goals in the Championship.

The club’s next top scorer is centre-back Charlie Cresswell, who

has bagged four goals for Millwall since starting his loan spell at The Den, but he will likely miss the rest of the campaign. Duncan Watmore, George Honeyman and Oliver Burke have scored just three goals combined, which is the same amount as Andreas Voglsammer.

Despite this, Rowett is keen to avoid switching the blame onto his players, but admits that more will need to be done if they are to feature in this year’s play-offs.

“The reality of our season so far is that we’re a tough, well-structured team that works so hard,” he said after Monday’s defeat on Humberside.

“I think the players give everything that they’ve got in every game, we’re a really difficult side to create chances against and beat.

“Zian and Bradders have scored our goals, and then we’ve scored quite a lot of set-piece goals. That’s sort of dried up a tiny bit.

“If Bradders and Zian don’t score then it’s simple, other players have got to step up.

If you’re a wide player, you’ve got to create and score goals at some point in the season. If you’re a midfielder, you might have to stick one in the top corner at some point in the season.

“It’s not a criticism of the players, it’s just reality. It’s why we looked for attacking players in the January window and why teams like us are always looking for that little bit of difference that can change the course of a game and your season.

“When I look at the last four games, or certainly the last three, take the West Brom game. I thought we were outstanding and probably should have won with the chances that we created.

“Luton last week, I thought we had the better of the chances and a couple of penalty shouts that we didn’t get.

“Today I thought we were excellent, but I’m walking away with two points feeling very disappointed.

“That’s how the season goes sometimes, but for a team like us there’s no easy way to get into the top six. We’ve certainly got to find

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT says that it is up to Millwall to improve their results after a disappointing Easter weekend, but admits that their play-off rivals are in a similar position heading into their last five games.

The Lions returned from the March international break in sixth place after their 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town, but despite dropping points to West Brom, Luton Town and Hull City, they now sit fifth ‘ahead of Saturday’s clash with Preston North End.

The teams around them have also struggled for form in recent weeks, with two places in the top six still up for grabs heading into the final matches of the season. Ryan Lowe’s side are level on points with Millwall and Blackburn Rovers, however, with Norwich City sitting just one point behind them in eighth.

Of course, Rowett’s men have a favourable run-in, but their poor form has seen them winless and goalless in their last four games, with a single defeat from now on enough to swing the promotion race.

Nonetheless, the manager stressed the importance of having their fate in their own hands, admitting that it is now down to them to turn their

season into a success.

“The reality is that other teams are facing the same situation,” he said after Monday’s defeat at the MKM Stadium.

“We can always look at it just from our own perspective, but if you’re West Brom, have you won the right amount of games in the last few? No. If you’re Norwich, have you won the right amount of games in the last few?

No. “You can go through four or five teams that are in a similar position to us.

“Is that pressure? Have the games become bigger? Is it that teams chasing down the top six feel a little less pressure and more freedom?

“You look at someone like Preston, Ryan [Lowe] has done a brilliant job, they’re flying and in the ascendancy.

We play them next.

“The reality is that you’ve got to have enough points at the end of the season, however you do that. You can do it by winning the first 20 games, being poor after it and taking a few points, or you can do it by winning what you need to win, which clearly for us is a few more games.

“We’ve got five games left, but we’ve got two home games coming up and two away games which you’d probably look at and say that we’ve got to take something out of them if we want to achieve anything this year.

“It’s going to be down to us.”

The prize is new for the 2022-23 campaign and looks to recognise a club for ‘a particularly outstanding or innovative piece of work’.

The Lions have been highlighted for their efforts to attract international supporters to The Den on matchdays, having launched their ‘Wallwide Membership’ at the end of March, costing £35.
