Southwark Council is to scrap its controversial ‘golden goodbye’ scheme that has seen departing cabinet members receive up to £13,911.

Introduced in 2016, the scheme has seen top councillors receive ‘loss of office payments’ equivalent to four weeks of their special allowance salary, plus another week for every year they served the cabinet. Between April 2019 and April 2021 alone, three departing cabinet members received a total £31,149,26.

Eyebrows were also raised when ex-housing chief Leo Pollak, who resigned after running an anonymous pro-development Twitter account used to harangue local residents, received a £4,881.10 pay-out. But at Council Assembly on Wednesday, March 22, Labour councillors following the whip are expected to vote to halt the scheme.

Lib Dem councillor Graham Neale, said:

“Residents will be relieved that they have finally decided to scrap these ridiculous pay outs.

Labour’s seven years of stubborn resistance to any suggestion that these payments be stopped shows the wasteful attitude they have in regards to residents’ money. The Liberal Democrats will now be requesting that any members who received a golden goodbye fully reimburse the council, or at least donate it to charity.”

When the scheme was first introduced in 2016, Lib Dem politicians branded it “rotten” and toxic”, especially given the council was bemoaning budget cuts at the time. Then council leader Peter John said the “small payments” were designed to provide

councillors with financial stability, thereby attracting candidates from “all walks and stages of life, bringing a healthy diversity to our front bench ... In contrast to many parts of the country where the only people who are in a position to devote themselves to serving their borough full-time are the affluent or retired, Southwark wants a cabinet that truly reflects the diverse nature of our population. ” But this did little to quell Southwark residents’ resentment when, faced with an ever decreasing local authority budget they have simultaneously watched councillors walk away with sizeable pay-outs. When councillors leave in controversial circumstances, as with Cllr Pollak, a Standards Committee says whether a

payment should still be given.

Given the stated aim of golden goodbyes was to ensure diverse political representation, it leaves the question as to how the council will continue to attract candidates from different walks of life.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Communities, Equalities and Finance, said: “We have reinforced our commitment to having diverse representation amongst councillors by signing up to the Co-operative Party’s Diverse Council’s Declaration.

Councillors should reflect the diversity of all of our communities across Southwark and this declaration commits us to working to improve diversity in democracy.”

Councillors were due to vote on whether to approve Labour’s members’ allowance scheme at council assembly on Wednesday, March 22, as the News was going to press.

The most notable change tabled by Labour is an SRA increase for deputy cabinet members, who would receive £9,753 annually, up from £3,144.

Planning and licensing committee chairs would also see their SRA increase from £16,389 to £24,025 annually.

Community champions, the mayor and deputy mayor would all see pay cuts.

All councillors would receive a basic yearly allowance of £12,736, up from £12,021.

The overall budgets for members’ allowances and special responsibility allowances would rise by 5.95 per cent, in line with the 5.95 per cent pay increase for all council officer grades.

London Councils recommended a pay increase of just 4.04 per cent but Southwark Council said this did “not fully reflect staff pay in London”.

Despite going beyond that recommendation, Southwark Council remains well in line with the independent panel’s overarching guidelines.

Council Leader Kieron Williams, for example, will receive a total remuneration of £70,448 which is below the panel’s recommendation of £74,106.

But Southwark Liberal Democrats have put forward a radical scheme that ignores some aspects of the panel’s recommendations.

Highly unlikely to be approved given Labour’s massive majority in Southwark, it would mean deputy cabinet members losing all their SRAs and sharp pay cuts for numerous members.

Lib Dem leader Cllr Victor Chamberlain, said: “Deputy cabinet members with no clear responsibilities are being offered a pay rise, while teams delivering vital social services are being reduced. The chair of Southwark’s main scrutiny earned the equivalent of £3,208 per meeting chaired last year- £26 per minute for a two hour meeting, double the average hourly wage for a carer in London. These inflated allowances amount to nothing more than cronyism, at the expense of the people of Southwark who are currently experiencing an unprecedented cost of living crisis. Last month, Southwark Labour unanimously decided to raise council tax and

cut key services in their budget. The fact they are making no savings in regards to their own remuneration is an insult to all those residents who will be struggling to make ends meet.”

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Communities, Equalities and Finance, said: “All councils are required to regularly review councillors’ allowances. This year’s changes are necessary to update the scheme and reflect changing workloads across a number of roles.

As a result, the allowances for nine roles have been substantially reduced, with eight adjusted up within the bands… As is the case each year, a small annual rise has also been applied. With the average increase being well below inflation and the same as the average increase in pay for council staff.

“It’s also worth repeating that standing for election should not be limited to people who can afford it. Councillors work long hours for their community, with some roles being full-time.

If only the wealthy and retired can stand for election then our diverse communities would not be served. A fair allowances scheme is crucial to making sure that everyone can be represented.”

The scheme outlines how much councillors receive and how much is paid in special responsibility allowances (SRAs) - additional remuneration given to councillors with more responsibilities.

Although in line with the London Councils Independent Remuneration Panel’s report, the body that advises London’s local authorities on payment schemes, Southwark Liberal Democrats say the payment scheme is too generous.

Southwark Liberal Democrats is expected to table its own scheme which would see councillors lose out on £265,553 annually, shirking aspects of the independent panel’s recommendations.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Poundland offered to hold an ‘acclimatisation session’ to ‘soothe the nerves’ of ‘East Dulwich luvvies’ worried about the budget shop’s arrival on Lordship Lane - ‘one of London’s poshest streets’.

The budget goods chain has told posh shoppers not to worry about ‘reverse gentrification’ through some new signage, ahead of the shop’s grand opening on Saturday, March 18.

The 2,800 sq ft store replaces a Foxtons estate agent and will create twelve jobs and joins other stores in sought-after locations like Swiss Cottage, Fulham and Shepherds Bush The company’s unusual marketing campaign comes after the News ran a story last month about local shoppers fearing the budget store would “bring down the value” of the affluent high street.

Leaping to its new outlet’s defence,

Poundland erected bespoke window signage to “stop any local hand-wringing”.

The hoardings feature ‘Poundland facts’ about the company’s green credentials, value-for-money products, and charity work.

A Poundland press release reads: “Poundland is putting the finishing touches to its new store in East Dulwich which will bring shoppers even more choice and value to help household budgets go further.

“Its arrival has caused an online stir on local Facebook groups with a small minority claiming Poundland’s new store is a sign of ‘reverse gentrification’.

“Eager to calm the nerves of East Dulwich luvvies, Poundland has created bespoke window signage highlighting facts about the business that should help stop any local hand-wringing.”

It described Lordship Lane as “one of London’s poshest streets” and said the store window posters “aim to soothe the nerves of the hoi polloi”.

The store is set to stock a selection of swanky products including £20 bottles

of Tattinger champagne that sell for £34 elsewhere on the high street.

Poundland director of retail, Darren Kay, said: “While our impending arrival on Lordship Lane has caused a bit of a hoo-ha, we can’t wait to open our doors and show Lordship Lane what we’re offering.”

While some East Dulwich locals were worried about the new store’s arrival, the majority of people were excited.

One Facebook user wrote: “In a time like this a lot of people will need to shop there.

Not everyone can afford to buy or rent in East Dulwich and surrounding areas. What do you expect to open, another pizza shop?”

Another Facebook user wrote: “Not everyone who lives in Dulwich is loaded and doesn’t have to worry about bills or heating their homes. At the end of the day, it’s providing jobs for people and, for those that will use it, they will not have to travel to Peckham or Streatham now, making it easier to get what they are after.”

Although one witty reader commented: “F*** this, I’m off to live in Mayfair.”

Pub’s famous ‘courage’ sign is looking for a new home

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A doomed Rotherhithe pub’a historic ‘courage’ sign is to become an art installation after being saved from the tip.

The Albion, on Albion Street, is being replaced with flats, but locals hope to keep its memory alive by salvaging the 12ft sign commissioned by Courage Brewery.

Local resident Michael Robertson, who was part of a campaign to save the pub, said: “We’re trying to take something that was so negative and make it positive.

“We were hoping that a theatre space, library, garden, pub or some public space will take it - it’s almost an artwork in itself.”

Michael added that he wanted the sign to stay in the community rather than see it sold off “to some swanky bar in Hoxton”.

The original plan was to restore the sign, which used to have neon lights illuminating its edges but, after speaking with artists, Michael and his team have decided to keep it in its current form.

Michael said: “We particularly like the word ‘courage’ because it brings about themes relevant today - a reminder that even through the cost of living crisis, we can have the courage to keep our nut down and keep going.”

Built in 1927, The Albion is an interwar mock Tudor pub which, along with

the Norwegian Church, was one of the few buildings to survive the Blitz.

Hitler’s bombs couldn’t beat the boozer but in November 2019, Southwark Council agreed to let a private developer build a four-storey block of flats on the site with space for a wine bar on the ground floor.

In March 2021, the establishment was put on the market for £1.25 million, with planning permission, prompting a renewed campaign from local group Save Our Albion.

On March 28, 2021, some 44 people protested against “cherished boozers” being “lost to the wrecking ball”.

Campaigners argued the pub was an important heritage asset, but the 2019 planning application dismissed the pub as “plain” and “a typical example of an interwar Neo-Tudor public house, which are very common”.

While campaigners celebrated a “small victory” when a planning application to build even more flats on the site was rejected in December 2021, this didn’t affect the original planning application and the demolition is getting underway.

“The team demolishing is a contractor that had no role in the decision to demolish and their boss was very generous in allowing his team to very carefully remove the original ‘Courage’ sign and donate it to the community,” said Michael.

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Three pubs have joined a host of other businesses and agreed to keep bleed control kits behind the bar to prevent people dying from knife crime.

Young people’s charity Let the Youth Live is installing publicly accessible bleed control kits across south London that can be used to treat people losing blood from serious injuries.

Local campaigner Lisa Pearson has now persuaded the Fox on the Hill Wetherspoons, Camberwell, The Pyrotechnist’s Arms, Nunhead, and The Beehive Wetherspoons in Brixton, to take a kit each.

The News has been covering Lisa’s campaign and last October highlighted her long-fought battle to install a stab wound kit outside 91 Peckham High Street, after nine months begging the council to let her.

Lisa this week told the News: “I’m really happy with how the community bleed control campaign is going. I’ve just put the first kits into local pubs and I’m getting these kits into Lambeth now as well as Southwark.”

Roughly 30 kits are now installed in takeaways, schools, nightclubs and other public spaces across south-east London, as well as two large bleed control cabinets at the Tesco Express on Dulwich Road and at 91 Peckham High Street, by the Peckham Arch.

There are also plans to install a cabinet at the cafe in Peckham Rye Park where Kalabe Legesse was tragically killed on Friday, December 30.

When somebody calls 999 and reports

an incident involving serious blood loss, emergency responders can direct the caller to the nearest bleed control kit.

They will then give the person step-bystep instructions on how to use kits, which contain trauma dressing, gauze, a chest seal, a tourniquet, scissors and gloves.

The campaign to install stab kits was

started by the Daniel Baird Foundation Charity, which was set up by Lynne Baird, whose son was fatally stabbed in Birmingham in 2017.

Children’s funfair returns to Young carers urged to apply for new grant Bermondsey’s Spa Garden scheme where they could get up to £500

This is the second time the small park at the junction of Grange Road and Spa Road has hosted Bottons Family Funfair.

It was a huge success last year and Bottons is now setting up in the park after leaving Blackheath, where it ran its fair during the February half-term.

The funfair will open this Friday at 2pm and will stay at the park until Sunday.

The small funfair will feature their latest rides, the runaway train and fire station. Entry is free but the rides and attractions are 2, 3 or 4 tokens for game stall and bungees, the tokens are £1.20 each or 10 for £10, Southwark Presents card holders receive 10% off.

Bell, the owner of the park’s café, said she was delighted they were returning and was looking forward to serving her homemade Turkish dishes, ice cream and other bites for the kids.

isabel@southwarknews.co.uk Young carers in Southwark, who have ‘fewer chances to take part in extracurricular activities’, are being encouraged to apply for a new council grant where they could receive up to £500 to allow them to learn a new skill.

Southwark Council has launched a new grant scheme for young carers living in the borough to ‘help them achieve their full potential.’

Grants range from £50 to £500 for individuals or groups of registered young carers aged 11 to 19-years-old.

The council is suggesting the money go towards things like: • Learning a new skill or improving an existing skill • Signing up for a training course • Taking part in an activity that helps with personal development • Group trips or projects e.g. action to help support the community or tackle a certain issue This is the first stage of the council’s new grant scheme, starting with young carers as a group with fewer chances to take part in extracurricular activities.

The money is intended to ease whatever barrier the young person is facing in achieving their potential, for instance, a lack of time or money.

After phase one of the scheme, it will be opened up to other young people in need.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Young People & Education, said: “We have over 300 young carers in Southwark. They do vital work in the borough caring for loved ones alongside their other responsibilities, like school and work.

“This can make it really hard for them to learn or develop skills in the things they are passionate about.

“We want every single young carer to get the support they need and deserve to fulfil their ambitions. Our new grant

scheme is designed to help them do exactly that, whether that’s through training, an activity or an item.”

The council is working with Imago Community to deliver the scheme as part of their wider support for young carers in Southwark.

Imago Young Carers work with schools, communities, and statutory and voluntary agencies to identify young carers in Southwark.

Young carers can be anyone aged 8 - 18 who is taking on caring responsibilities for a family member with a long-term illness, disability, mental health or substance misuse issue.

Ashley Giles, CYP Operations Manager at Imago Community, said: “This grant scheme is going to be a massive benefit to a large number of young carers right across the borough and will help set them on their way to achieving their goals.

“Young carers can often report feeling isolated and lonely, so to be able to access this grant scheme will go a long way in supporting whichever endeavour they may wish to pursue, be it sporting, educational, cultural or the arts.”

canada water set to become a hub for new science led businesses with stacks of labs being delivered

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Innovative tech businesses are being lured to Canada Water thanks to the construction of 30,000 sq ft of lab space by developer British Land.

British Land and investment fund AustralianSuper have also appointed architect Stanton Williams to draw up plans for a 300,000 sq ft life sciences building, also on the Canada Water Masterplan.

It is hoped the schemes will “support innovation and life sciences businesses” by tackling a lab space shortage that experts have said could hinder the UK’s burgeoning life sciences sector.

Emma Cariaga, Joint Head of Canada Water at British Land, said: “Canada Water is in prime position to cater to the growing number of life science and innovation businesses requiring new, high-specification lab space, supporting the aims of the government’s newly published Science and Technology Framework which pinpoints these burgeoning sectors as a crucial driver of economic growth.”

Part of an area named ‘Paper Yard’, the lab space is ‘modular’, meaning the

units are delivered part-ready-made, requiring minimal construction on-site.

They will be ready for occupation in May and British Land said it is “seeing positive early interest from potential life science occupiers”.

Architect Stanton Williams has previously won the architectural Stirling Prize for the Sainsbury Laboratory in Cambridge.

Although British Land has permission to keep the labs for at least ten years, modular buildings are designed to be temporary.

British Land told the News its long-term ambition was to move its occupiers from these buildings and into the permanent life sciences building.

Once completed, the larger life sciences building will host house wet labs where drugs, chemicals and other biological materials can be handled.

British Land’s life science scheme is part of its huge £5.6 billion masterplan on its 46-acre site incorporating Surrey Quays shopping centre, the SE16 Printworks, Surrey Quays Leisure Park, the Dock Manager’s Office and Dock Offices.

The masterplan is being approved in stages and will deliver 3,000 new homes and 2.5 million sq ft of offices.

Police respond to reports of firearm discharged on a Bermondsey estate Exclusive

Officers attended at 8.45pm on Monday night, March 20 and found damage to a communal door at Arica House.

There have been no reports of any injuries and no arrests have been made.

An Arica House resident told the News that two panes of glass in the block’s communal entrance had been shattered.

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Rotherhithe has been named the UK’s eighth most lucrative ‘property hotspot’ thanks to the area’s regeneration - most notably the £3.3 billion Canada Water scheme.

“Stunning views of the river”, “waterfront properties” and excellent transport links into central London were also cited as key factors in the Property Market-Index report.

But local residents often point out the hidden costs of regeneration, which can see families priced out having lived in the area for generations.

Research by the Runnymede Trust found that Southwark’s housing stock decreased by 18,000 between 1994 and 2020 and that house prices rose by £900,000 between 2010 and 2016.

But Amanda Collinson, spokesperson for the Property Market-Index, the property value tracker that compiled the report, said “resurgent urban locations” were benefitting from “regeneration money” that is “hothousing some formerly rundown

locations”.

The report said: “Property prices [in Rotherhithe] are at bargain levels versus those in neighbouring Docklands boroughs and buyers should see their investment grow well, while they enjoy all the benefits of a well-connected location.”

“Set on the peninsula of the south bank of the Thames, Rotherhithe seemed to have missed out on the great London Docklands boom, but it now could benefit from the £3.3 billion in development cash being spent in nearby Canada Water,” it added.

Does Southwark Council employ enough resident services officers to look after estate residents?

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Estate officers cover up to 806 households each, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted by the News has revealed.

The revelation comes amid evermounting claims that the council struggles to stay on top of repair requests, having received a whopping 150,522 in the financial year ending 2022.

But Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (TRA) chairs are split on whether resident increasing the number of services officers (RSOs), commonly known as estate officers, would improve the situation.

RSOs are not repairs officers and cannot raise repairs or decide what works are carried out. But they are generally residents’ first point of contact and will refer repair issues to maintenance departments.

Currently, the council employs 78 RSOs to oversee a total 48,164 households, an average of 617 each.

There are seventeen RSOs managing over 700 households, many of whom manage flats spread across different

Rotherhithe’s Plush SE16 given one more month before its eviction

By Isabel Ramirez isabel@southwarknews.co.uk Due to be evicted last Friday, Plush SE16 has been granted a stay of execution of one more month by its landlord, who says she is determined to have housing built on the site.

Landowner Gillian Vafaey, who owns the site on Rotherhithe New Road, says her decision to evict the five businesses after twenty years is to ‘realise her dreams’ and build housing ‘for the community.’

She has owned the plot in Rotherhithe New Road, Surrey Quays for 30 years and ran businesses on the site with her late husband. She then leased the units to Michael Clinkett in 2002, who set up Plush SE16 – which consists of a Caribbean takeaway, hairdresser, barber, car wash and music studio.

This enclave of businesses had been served with an eviction notice for March 17, after a court ruled in Mrs Vafaey’s favour, but Plush SE16 had received the backing from MP Neil Coyle and ward councillors, who say

he should be relocated before full planning permission can go ahead.

Attempts to find a new home for Plush SE16 by a developer, who got outlining planning permission for a tower block on the site, and Southwark Council have so far been fruitless. And without relocation, the council has refused to grant developer Regent Land full planning permission.

Responding to attempts by the News to see if Mrs Vafaey would consider a stay of execution she said: “My dream is to leave a legacy and help the community with more housing, which is desperately needed. My husband and I operated businesses out of the site for years before Mr Clinkett set up his businesses there. In that time we allowed him to have the plots at a lower than market rent and for him to be in the properties rentfree for three months last year.

“Now, since my husband passed away, I want to retire and sell the land, but I also want to do some good for the community me and my husband worked in. That is why I want to sell the land to a developer so they are able to build much-needed housing.”

Mr Clinkett disputes any suggestion that he was deliberately not paying rent for three

Citizens UK, a grassroots community coalition that advocates on housing issues, last week urged Southwark

months, saying he was directed by the judge to keep it aside to be paid when the lease issue was resolved.

On February 17, a judge ordered Mr Clinkett to leave the land by March 17. Mr Clinkett asked for a further extension on March 16 to April 19 to allow him to remove all equipment on the site, which Mrs Vafaey said she has granted.

“While he was due to leave the site on March 17 I have said he can have another month as a gesture of goodwill,” she said.

When asked for comment on being granted an extension, Mr Clinkett said this was the first he was hearing of it and claimed the landlord had not contacted him directly.

Mustafa Sidki, a specialist litigation solicitor from firm Thackray Williams, speaking on behalf of Mrs Vafaey said: “My client wishes to sell her land, which is her right, and retire but she is being thwarted by the tenant who refuses to leave. To her credit, my client wishes this land to be of a real benefit to the community and for it to be used for housing but has been forced to take this legal action to sell it. We hope the tenant will finally vacate the land so my client can realise her dreams.”

Mr Clinkett, who said he is currently dismantling the businesses he spent over 20 years building, added: “If Mrs Vafaey had asked the community, she would know what they really want.”

Regent Land originally applied to build the tower block with 48 new homes, twelve of which would be for social rent and one for ‘intermediate rent’. Southwark’s planning regulations currently require that 35 per cent of new development must have ‘affordable housing’.

The council has said it will still continue to look for an alternative site for Plush SE16, but whether that is before the new eviction remains to be seen.

By Isabel Ramirez isabel@southwarknews.co.uk The campaign group led by schoolchildren to end repair issues in Southwark council homes has postponed its next meeting to allow for the relevant decision-makers, including the council leader, to be there.

Two weeks ago, students from Notre Dame RC Girls School joined community leaders and residents at the Southwark Council offices to raise the alarm about mould, damp and repairs issues.

They began working on this campaign after discovering that, in a group of 37 students, all but two have experienced these issues.

The group - led by Southwark and Peckham Citizens, a local alliance of Citizens UK - gathered at the offices on Tooley Street to demand change to the current repairs service.

In order to push for change, they prepared a giant invitation, addressed to Cllr Kieron Williams to involve them in the promised Southwark Repairs Improvement Plan.

After finding Cllr Williams wasn’t available, deputy council lead Cllr Jasmine Ali agreed to listen to their demands in his place. They were due to have a meeting on Monday, March

Council to reintroduce caretakers who are responsible for repair cases and would ‘improve the council’s communication with residents’. But Nick Flower, TRA Chair on the Southampton Way Estate, where one RSO covers 309 households, as well as over 300 homes elsewhere in Southwark, said an RSO shortage was “not exactly the issue”. He said: “High disrepair causes lots of complaints. Poor maintenance causes high disrepair.”

He went on to argue that poor maintenance was a result of labour shortages because there are “not enough qualified plumbers, heating engineers, surveyors, etcetera to do proper building maintenance”.

He said: “Labour shortages [are] caused by a decade of staffing budget cuts and low pay in the public sector… plus Brexit made it worse by cutting off sources of cheap qualified building tradespeople from Eastern Europe.”

Last week, the government’s budget announced relaxed immigration rules to help construction employers fill certain vacant roles. Bricklayers, masons roofers, roof tilers, slaters, carpenters, plasterers and other building traders were added to the shortage occupation list.

Southwark Council has been approached for comment.

School pupils housing protest postponed so council leader can attend

A spokesperson from Southwark and Peckham Citizens said: “We have made the decision to postpone our Citizens Housing Meeting, planned for Monday 20th March, until April.

“We are postponing the meeting so that we can have a period of meaningful discussion with the council to share our concerns and explore our campaign proposal.

“We want to work closely and constructively with Southwark Council on the problem of council housing repairs, as we have done on many different issues over many years.”

They added that the delay also means the relevant decision-makers will be present at the Citizens Housing Meeting in April including Council Leader Kieron Williams, Cllr Darren Merrill who is the cabinet member for housing and senior council staff.

Cllr Kieron Williams said: “We look forward to working closely with Southwark and Peckham Citizens to hear their stories, concerns and explore their suggested solutions to improving the council repairs service.

“At the postponed meeting in April, we will be in a better position to discuss our plans for accountability in housing repairs and to discuss Southwark & Peckham Citizens’ asks around how blocks are cared for and by whom.”

isabel@southwarknews.co.uk An Elephant and Castle-based Instagram model, who started extreme running to help him process the grief of losing his mum, is aiming to be the fastest-ever Briton to run across the United States - which will see him run over 3,000 miles in just 63 days.

William Goodge is no stranger to extreme challenges – in 2021 he ran an incredible 48 marathons in 30 days, raising £50,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in the process.

This year, he’s taking on his greatest challenge yet - running across the breadth of the United States of America - from California to New York City. This will see him cover a massive 3,175 miles in just 63 days, averaging around 50 miles per day - a feat only 300 people have ever dared to take on.

And to top it all, he is aiming to become the fastest-ever Briton to run this coast-to-coast route.

William, 28, who lives in Elephant and Castle, took up running to help

him process his grief after his mum died from cancer in 2018.

When asked about his reasons for completing this epic challenge for Macmillan, he said: “The Macmillan nurses who work within the hospital where my mum had most of her treatment were always there for her when she was diagnosed with cancer.

“Knowing there is an available support system for the cancer patient and the family too was incredible.

It’s a tough time for so many people and I found comfort even knowing there was support available if I or my family needed it. Everyone I’ve met in Macmillan has a true heart of gold and the work they do every day is beyond important.

“6,000 people have summited Everest, but only 300 people have run across the US. I’ve run the length of the UK, and I’ve run 250km through the Sahara Desert, yet these were nothing compared to what I’m about to do. But what I will be going through will still be nothing compared to what my mum went through and what other cancer patients are going through and so I’m

doing it for them.

“I know I’ll succeed, even if I have to crawl to get it done…nothing can stop me. All my previous challenges have been the perfect build-up to what I’m about to do and I’m totally ready for this.”

Andrew Gould, Macmillan’s Relationship Fundraising Manager, said: “William continues to amaze and inspire us all with his commitment and desire to raise money for Macmillan. In total so far, William has raised over £80,000 for us; an incredible amount which could fund a Macmillan Nurse for over 14 months. We are so proud of him.”

This time around William is hoping to raise £500,000 to help people living with cancer. The funds raised will be split between Macmillan Cancer Support and the American Cancer Society.

William’s challenge starts on April 2 in Huntington Beach, California and ends on June 4 in Central Park, New York City.

A man has been arrested after several vehicles were burned to a crisp in Elephant and Castle, leaving one local mum’s life “turned upside down”.

Police were called about an ambulance on fire in Lambeth Road and found two more burning cars on St George’s Road, at the junction with Hayles Street, in the early hours of Wednesday, March 1.

A 24-year-old man was found nearby, arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and detained under the mental health act.

Local mum-of-two Sakinatul Choudhury, whose BMW 5 series was written off, said her life had been

“turned upside down” since.

The nursery worker said she’d struggled to do everyday tasks - like taking her disabled fourteen-yearold daughter to school and doing the shopping - since losing the car that “made me so happy”.

She said: “A policeman called my name and I opened the door and I was wondering how can somebody know my name?

“When I opened the door they [the policeman] asked ‘is that your car?’”

“I was really shocked and it’s affected my health. The car was in my family for eighteen years and we never had a problem with it. I used to joke that this car was my boyfriend because I’d drive it and feel so happy. My life has been turned upside down,” she said.

she’s struggling to afford a new car that suits her needs.

“It’s really difficult I want to buy a car but I’m having to take time to think it through. With the cost of living crisis, everything rises,” she said.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 03.29hrs on Wednesday, 1 March to reports of an ambulance on fire in Lambeth Road, SE1.

“Officers and the London Fire Brigade attended and also found two cars on fire in St George’s Road, near the junction with Hayles Street, SE1.

“A 24-year-old man was located nearby and arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

“He was taken to a south London police station. He was subsequently detained under the mental health act and was taken to a hospital for treatment.”

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A Tory MP has questioned MP Harriet Harman’s impartiality ahead of Boris Johnson’s privileges committee hearing into whether he misled parliament over the partygate scandal.

As chair of the privileges committee, Harriet Harman will oversee a broadcasted meeting where a crossparty panel will grill the former MP over whether he lied to parliament on Wednesday, March 22.

But Tory MP Conor Burns has highlighted a tweet Harman posted in April 2022, suggesting it could mean Harriet Harman is unfit to lead the inquiry “with integrity”.

She tweeted: “If u get covid regs FPN u can either admit guilt or go to ct to challenge it. If PM and CX [Rishi Sunak] admit guilt, accepting that police right that they breached regs,then they are also admitting that they misled the House of Commons. Or are they going to challenge?”

The MP for Camberwell and Peckham was referring to the fine Johnson received, and paid, for breaching covid lockdown rules.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4, Bournemouth West MP, Conor Burns, who served as a minister under Johnson, said: “I rate Harriet Harman highly, but she did tweet in April 2022 that if [Johnson and Sunak] admit guilt, by which she said was accepting a fixed-penalty notice, then

they are also admitting that they misled the House of Commons.

“Boris Johnson contests that, but it seems to me the person who is chairing this committee has predetermined it and that causes me a degree of anxiety for parliament’s reputation in handling this with integrity.”

According to the Independent, Tory MPs Sir Robert Buckland and Michael Ellis have also previously questioned Harman’s suitability for the role.

A spokesperson for the committee told the News: “The House of Commons as a whole approved a motion to appoint Harriet Harman to the Committee. The other six Members of the Committee, which has a Government party majority, then elected Harriet Harman as Chair unanimously.”

Harriet Harman was approached for comment and this paper’s request was forwarded to the privileges committee.

Police renew appeal for footage after Brixton Academy disaster

The terrifying scenes on December 15 claimed the lives of mother-of-two Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, security guard Gaby Hutchinson, 23, and a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition three months on.

People can share the footage or images through the online portal, accessible via the QR code, or contact police by searching online for ‘Operation Wickmar’ and reaching the public portal through the link.

Detective Superintendent Dave Kennett, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “The effects of this incident were tragic. The surge in the crowd resulted in two deaths and critical injuries to a third person.

“It is important that we know why the surge happened, for the families of those who never returned home, and for the

safety of those who attend music events in the future. If you have anything to share please do get in touch.”

Following the crush at Afro-pop singer Asake’s concert, Lambeth council suspended the Academy’s licence, meaning it will not reopen until April 16 at the earliest.

DS Kennett added: “If you were there when this tragic incident happened, if you have footage or pictures of the evening, please come forward and speak to my team. We need your help to establish what happened so that we can provide answers to the families and loved ones of those who were so seriously, or fatally injured.

“We know there were thousands of people there and that many will have seen what happened. Fifth man charged in Kai McGinley murder investigation

Police charged 23-year-old Kai Osibodu, of Riverdale Road, Erith, Kent, last Friday, March 17, with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Two men, Jalees Selby-Gangera, 18, of Woodfield Close, Erith and Enriko Spahiu, 20, of Elmhurst, Belvedere, were charged

on Thursday, March 9 with murder and attempted murder after being arrested earlier that week.

They charged another two men after making a series of arrests. Twenty-yearold Connor Brooks, of Horsa Road, Erith and Bradlee Reeve, 33, of Chapman Road, Erith were both charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder on Saturday, March 11.

A plea hearing is scheduled for May 30 with a trial date scheduled for January 3 2024 - both at the Old Bailey.

Thursday, March 16 and was due to appear in custody at Croydon Magistrates’ Court the following day.

The investigation was launched after police were called the scene at around 09.45am on Tuesday, February, 14, to reports that a woman had been attacked by a man outside the school.

The attack took place during half term when the school was closed.

Officers attended with London Ambulance Service and a man in his thirties was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death is being treated as unexpected and police are conducting further enquiries to establish the circumstances.

Residents trying to get into their flats were reportedly being directed to the main entrance of the building.

The man’s next of kin are yet to be informed.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Berkeley Homes will have to reshuffle its Borough Triangle development plans to include a second staircase and possibly fewer storeys, a Southwark Council planning officer has indicated.

The developer plans to demolish Mercato Metropolitano, a popular hub of bars and small businesses, and build residential blocks of up to 46-storeys, on the Elephant and Castle site.

But the scheme has been complicated

by Mayor Sadiq Khan’s February announcement that new residential buildings over 30 metres must have two staircases to improve fire safety.

At a public meeting, organised by Borough and Bankside ward councillors and local residents, a council planning officer said: “I would expect that the scheme is going to be revised not least because of the two staircase issue.”

“Our initial view as officers is that the scheme is too tall so we are going to be talking to Berkeley about that,” they added.

Concerned residents were informed of these recent developments at a public meeting held on the Scovell Estate in Elephant and Castle, on

Thursday, March 16.

The required changes could result in a wholesale revision of the plans, given a second staircase could have implications for the scheme’s size and the number of flats it accommodates.

Berkeley’s initial plans are to build 838 flats across four blocks measuring 46, 42, 10 and 18 storeys and refurbish an existing three-storey building.

Local residents have expressed concerns about the building’s height, overshadowing, impact on the surrounding area and a ‘lack of affordable housing’.

There was particular concern that the 838 units planned were almost double the site’s indicative capacity of 438.

But a council document has since said that the 438 figure is “not clear and justified” and could “support a much greater quantum of development on the site”. Nonetheless, the 838 figure is likely to fall if a revised submission is made.

While news of a revised planning submission offers a glimmer of hope to some residents, traders on Mercato Metropolitano told the News their position remained precarious.

Wishing to remain anonymous, two traders said communication from Mercato had been very limited.

According to Berkeley’s planning statement, it is in discussions with Mercato Metropolitano about keeping it

on the site after the redevelopment.

Buildings C and D have been designed to accommodate Mercato but Berkeley has said the spaces could “be occupied by a number of potential alternative tenants” should an agreement not be reached.

Berkeley has a ‘business relocation strategy’ which involves consulting with the four businesses on-site - Mercato, Theatrical Education Services Ltd, Former Baptist Church and Truckpoint Vehicle Hire - about their requirements and the possibility of providing new premises.

But it is claimed Berkeley is only communicating with Mercato directly and not individual traders, meaning some vendors feel they have been left in the dark.

Asked how much communication they’d received from Mercato, two traders who wished to remain anonymous said they’d had almost nothing.

“They don’t even know themselves.

They said [we can stay until] December at the earliest because they know for sure that’s when it [Mercato] will be open,” one said.

Southwark Liberal Democrat leader and Borough and Bankside Councillor Victor Chamberlain told the News: “If the current plans are approved hundreds of jobs and dozens of businesses are under threat.

“I have asked for an urgent meeting with Berkley Homes and Mercato to examine what we can do to protect jobs and this hugely valuable local space and to make sure all those affected know about it.

“I’ve also asked council bosses to make themselves aware of this issue and look at options to retain Mercato.”

Jerry Flynn of the local activist housing group the 35% campaign said there were

lessons to be learned from the experiences of traders from the demolished Elephant and Castle shopping centre.

In that instance, some relocated successfully but Pricebusters, for example, claimed they didn’t get enough compensation to meet the cost of refitting and re-establishing its business, which it estimated to be over £1 million.

Berkeley declined to comment.

Mercato Metropolitano was approached for comment.

An ex-MP and newspaper magnate known for ‘furthering the education’ of working people by funding public libraries, is to be honoured in a special day event and a bike tour around three of the buildings he bankrolled, writes Andrew Pearson...

Many south Londoners will have seen the old library that stands on Wells Way in Burgess Park. Some will have been to past events there. But many may not realise it was funded by the remarkably generous John Passmore Edwards.

From humble Cornish beginnings, Passmore Edwards went on to become a journalist, newspaper proprietor and MP. He amassed a sizable fortune which he used to further the education of working people all over the UK. He did this mainly by funding numerous public buildings around 70 in total, with a special focus on libraries.

In all, Edwards donated money to found 15 libraries in London - four of them in Southwark - as well as several other public buildings, such as the South London Gallery in Camberwell.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of his birth on 24th March 1823, and Friends of Burgess Park is joining with others around the UK to put on a day of celebration in his honour - Passmore Edwards 200 Festival - on Sunday, March 26.

There will be a programme of events based at the old library, baths and washhouse on Wells Way.

There will also be a short bike tour around three of Passmore Edwards’ south London buildings, guided by a renowned local architect.

Many of these buildings are still in public use today, though not all for their original purposes. The Wells Way library was opened in 1903 as part of the Camberwell Borough Council’s ‘one-stop-shop’ of library, baths and washhouse.

Passmore Edwards contributed £3,000 to the Library section of the building, consisting of a reading room, bookshelves and a newspaper room at the opposite end, with a spiral staircase to the children’s library in the basement.

His frequent collaborator, architect Maurice Adams, designed the library section of the building, while the borough architect designed the baths - unusually but the fit is remarkable. It was described

by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, scholar and author of the guides The Buildings of England, as being ‘a picturesque group with Baroque porch, Gothic gable, Tudor windows, and a Queen Anne bay-window, and yet quite successful and typical of 1900.’ Other people have been known to refer to the red brick and white stone as ‘streaky bacon’.

The building, in common with most of the fruits of Passmore Edwards’ philanthropy, is now Grade II listed. Southwark Council still owns the property and is committed to ensuring it has a place in the future of the Park, although its original purposes have lapsed.

With the loss of housing and the creation

of the park, the baths and washhouse closed in the 1980s and the library in the early ‘90s. Since then, Lynn Boxing Club has occupied the baths, with a church, theatre, artists’ popup and offices of Groundwork using other parts.

The pandemic, however, left only boxing, and the rest is sadly unoccupied. The Friends of Burgess Park said they were hoping the celebration would focus attention on this significant building which sits, very underused, in the middle of Burgess Park.

Passmore Edwards, who lived to the age of 88, was a lifelong champion of working people and most of his projects were concerned with their welfare - hospitals, schools, institutes, a sailor’s palace, art galleries and libraries (and even books for the libraries). He originally made his money in newspaper publishing, papers often aimed at educating the workers, and sold at a low price for the time. He gave away much of his money in the later years of his life, often getting involved with the projects he funded.

The event will run from 2 pm on Sunday, March 26 at Wells Way Library. The bike tour will take 2 hours and tickets cost £10.

‘Smoke and mirrors: Tory budget is not all it appears to be’ L ast week we had the latest Tory Budget. The last ‘mini’ Budget cost the country £30 billion and needlessly hit mortgage payers with hundreds of pounds a month in higher costs.

I’m yet to see a genuine apology from the Tories for the damage they did and this latest Budget is still repairing their mess after 13 years in office, including five propped up in the Lib Dem Coalition.

Thirteen years of the Tories have left people worse off, facing higher taxes, higher prices, dropping living standards and worse services. It is an extraordinary and awful record leaving most people wondering who is benefitting. Well, the Tories did again prioritise the

wealthiest with a £1 billion tax cut for the top 1% of earners.

Some of the measures announced by the Government initially sounded like they should be welcomed. I’ve been raising childcare for local parents, including the Bermondsey Mums’ Club, for some time for example. But the numbers fell apart as soon as they were revealed in full: the headline ‘30 hours per week of free childcare’ only covers parents who both work and only helps for 38 weeks a year.

I don’t know any jobs in Southwark with 14 weeks of annual leave, leaving a huge bill to pay. Ministers also announced the free childcare now, but it won’t be available to many parents until September 2024.

Ministers’ contradictory positions also flabbergast: with nurses told to put up with the real terms loss of income for their work because Tory paymasters claimed they did not want to increase inflation with a pay rise. But then the bankers’ bonus cap gets lifted and inflation-busting rises are imposed on cigarettes and alcohol.

This Government has always taken people for fools and it is Ministers’ arrogance and dismissive attitude that I think will cost them, and none more so than Boris Johnson who this week faced questioning for misleading the Commons about his Downing Street parties. These are, of course, the parties he said did not exist at all to begin with! Then he claimed they were within the rules.

ycling around the giant puddles created across the borough by heavy rain last week, I was reading about the global shortage of water in the ‘Turning the Tide’ report.

It’s hard to hold both realities in your head sometimes.

By the end of the decade, the world will not have enough fresh water to meet basic human needs.

Across Europe, we are currently in a long drought, with lakes and reservoirs at record low levels, and restrictions placed on water use.

Last year was the driest summer in 50 years.

Perhaps we tend to underestimate water because it literally falls from the sky. Yet our water supplies and sewage actually

require huge inputs of energy.

Drinking water is cleaned and pumped to our houses, water is heated for washing and then waste water is pumped away and treated in an inefficient system that poisons aquatic ecosystems.

It is a scandal that privatised water companies have been allowed to waste so much clean water by failing to repair leaks, and to pump sewage into rivers and onto beaches.

Green Party policy is to bring water companies back into public ownership.

As with most things, we need a combination of individual action and structural changes. The average person in the UK uses 150 litres of water a day for drinking, cooking, cleaning and flushing.

You can save water by being more deliberate: turn off the tap when brushing teeth, shampooing, washing dishes – turn it on to rinse. A bath filled to the top contains as much as 160 litres of water, so make everyday baths shallower or swap them for showers. But keep an eye on how long you shower. A five-minute shower uses between 35 and 100 litres, depending on the flow rate. A long power shower could send three days’ worth of water down the drain!

Water meters are coming – they help us pay attention to what we’re using and can be a chance to save money. But we need to make sure that everyone has the water they need to keep healthy without worrying about the cost.

Water is a precious resource and a common good. Sharing and protecting it for all is a matter of social justice.

Mayor Khan’s two staircase rule could put a question mark over other developments across Southwark

I

n this week’s paper, we reported how the ‘Borough Triangle’ development, in Elephant and Castle, could be forced back to the drawing board thanks to Sadiq Khan’s new fire safety announcement. It appears that one of south east London’s biggest residential developments may have hit an even bigger stumbling block.

Developer Berkeley declined to comment on whether it would be submitting revised plans, but it’s difficult to see what other options are open to them. Khan has been clear that every residential block over 30 metres must have two staircases and their current plans simply don’t tick that box.

The announcement undoubtedly will have come as a blow to developers across the capital as the change is expected to cost them £1.6bn over the next decade. However, given that the London Fire Brigade has been advocating for the second staircase rule for some time, it has to be a worthwhile change.

It will also be interesting to see what implications this has for other tall developments across the borough. Will the Aylesham Centre 27 and 20-storey blocks, also proposed by Berkeley, meet the new standards? This is something the News will investigate.

Overall, many local residents will be pleased to find out Berkeley may have to reconsider its plans.

Many feel blocks of 46 and 42-storeys would be too tall and will be reassured by a Southwark planning officer’s admittance that they feel so too.

It’s rare that we get to hear planning officers’ opinions on planning applications before the publication of their final, polished report. But hearing their thought process at a public meeting last week was a good exercise in transparency.

The future of Mercato Metropolitano, the hub of bars and small businesses on the site, still teeters on the brink. Berkeley has sought to reassure people that it is in talks with the operator about keeping them on-site. But it’s hard to see how Mercato Metropolitano can ever be the same. It has a vast footprint, where all the different businesses merge together to create an indoor-outdoor collective of food, drink and arts businesses. The place has a unique, organic feel and if it was portioned off into conventional, geographically disparate retail units, its entire essence would be lost.

We sincerely hope that Mercato and Berkeley can come to an agreement that bears in mind the interests of the vendors and local community. Since it was established, Mercato Metropolitano has become a community hub and losing it would be a great shame.

The show by Jordan Harrison looks at a wealthy American family of the future and their relationship with Artificial Intelligence. Since its debut back in 2014 it has had a transfer to off-broadway and a film adaptation.

Set on the west coast of America in 2050, the show takes a look at a world where AI is not just typing questions into Chat GTP like we may do today, but a world where AI can take part in our family lives and care for loved ones.

Tess and her husband Jon have got her mother Marjorie a ‘Prime’ to help with her care and well-being. A Prime is a humanoid AI bot in the form of a deceased loved one, in this case, Marjorie’s late husband Walter.

The Prime continually learns from what it is told to become the loved one you had lost. The rest of this one-act play is about the family relationships and dynamics that can arise from secrets hidden. The twists that unfold around this quite unhappy household are foreseeable but what this show examines is our relationship with technology and whether anybody you have loved can truly be replaced.

The strength of director Dominic Dromgoole’s production comes from a very detailed set design by Jonathan Fensom and also from a strong cast.

Richard Fleeshman, more known for his work in musical theatre, gives an apt, soulless performance as Walter Prime. At the emotional centre of the piece, Nancy Carroll’s Tess is fraught and distressed with what seems like the weight of the world on her shoulders that is never eased by the technology she now possesses. What we get from Anne Reid as Marjorie and Tony Jayawardena

as Jon is a real warmth of personality.

Marjorie’s uncensored quips bring laughs and Jon’s constant willingness to help and better any given situation creates a real connection with the audience. Their robust mother-in-law and son-in-law dynamic is a highlight.

Marjorie Prime is a nicely judged show.

It knows when to move the story on and no scene feels overworked. All the while it holds a mirror to itself and poses questions about how we live our lives already with such a reliance on technology.

With Artificial Intelligence certainly not going away, it does make you wonder what are the limitations of it, and how will we as a society accept it in our lives and grow with it.

A really nice little one-act show.

This show came to a rapid end at 11.30, but you knew that there were more images to look at and more stories to accompany them, and you knew that you will be back to see Danny Baker again, with all the hilarious repeats and overlaps, because there will always be many tales that you have not heard before.

You will not see a sausage sandwich in the show but you will get to vote for red sauce, brown sauce, or no sauce at all.

And I am pleased to report that brown sauce has won by a landslide at every performance except one.

The tour is travelling all over the UK, but because Danny likes to spend as much time at home as possible, he plays many venues within an hour of London, so get your tickets and get out to the suburbs. You will not be disappointed.

A bleak island played out at Young Vic When I read the show warnings of mental health crisis, infanticide and sexual violence for ‘Further than the furthest thing’ I was braced for a challenging evening, writes Katie Kelly...

An air of menace prevails in the opening scene as a man is swept into dangerous water accompanied by eerie vocals. The tension lifts briefly for a gentle domestic moment; the return of a much-loved nephew, Francis, to his aunt and uncle accompanied by a stranger. There was tenderness and comedy as these unsophisticated and isolated island folk attempted to welcome the unexpected visitor.

The undercurrent of doom quickly returned and never really left for the rest of the play, written by Zinnie Harris and directed by Jennifer Tang.

Francis is restless and disaffected with the limits of his island home. Is his introduction of a predatory capitalist to the previously isolated farming community an existential threat?

‘Further than the furthest thing’ isn’t a simplistic tale of an island paradise ruined by modernity. In the end, the biggest threat comes from within. The land itself serves up a volcanic eruption, and the tiny community has long been weighed down by a dark secret. When they are displaced by the volcano and find themselves swapping their ‘patches’ of land for

alienating factory work in the strange land of ‘h‘England’, Francis’ visitor becomes both saviour and traitor.

There are obvious parallels with current issues in the play. Destruction of land by climate change and capitalism, the plight of those forced from home to try and make a life in a hostile environment. Not that the island life is romanticised, it is shown in its fragility and exhausting monotony.

A precarious existence, dependent on supplies arriving by boat to supplement a meagre diet of potatoes, ‘crawfish’ and h’eggs from sea birds.

Like the island itself, the play doesn’t offer many options. There is an absence of either possibility or even productive anger at its centre, which, along with elements of gratuitous misery, slightly saps the soul, leaving one hungry for hope.

If that all sounds a bit bleak, let me add that most of the seating is backless benches which added to the discomfort for many. However, at the centre of this play is a magnificent character, Aunt Mill, who is stunningly brought to life by Jenna Russell.

Mill somehow combines an affectionate and simple character with sharpness and strength which only increases in adversity.

If there is a hope for the islanders and this production, then she is it.

Marjorie prime was a Pulitzer Prize for Drama finalist in 2015, and was met with great acclaim - now it has come across the Atlantic for a run at Borough’s Menier Chocolate Factory, writes Christopher Peacock...

he reveals some backstage secrets that viewers and listeners never get to see.

He takes no blame for great, lifechanging job offers seemingly dropping in to his lap. But make no mistake, after agreeing to them he then does have to produce the goods with his excellent writing or have the screen presence to be able to front a show. Nobody could have such longevity in show business without having the necessary skills.

This is not some slick, over-rehearsed and timed-to-the-second performance, but just a man getting out on that stage with lots to say to an audience who are there to hear him say it. He often gets diverted by a thought that has him swerving off somewhere else, and he may not get back on track for ten minutes, but return to the proposed route he does.

Though this does mean that the last few stories and projected photographs are rushed, squeezed in before the staff switch off the power, and while people needing to get their last train home are

The London Borough of Southwark (Charged-for parking places) (CPZ ‘S’) (No. 2) Order 2023 The London Borough of Southwark (Free Parking Places, Loading Places and Waiting, Loading and Stopping Restrictions) (CPZ ‘S’) (No. 2) Order 2023 1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 23 March 2023 it has made the above Orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

2. The effects of the (Charged-for parking places) Order are:(a) in BRAY CRESCENT amend the area of permit-holders’ only past this point zone to remove sections which were erroneously added in the areas beyond what is public highway; (b) in BYWATER PLACE south-east side, reduce by 8m ‘permit’ parking opposite No. 29 Bywater Place (7m of this bay will remain); (c) in CAPSTAN WAY (i) west side, remove 20m ‘permit’ parking o/s Nos. 7-10 Capstan Way which was erroneously added in the area beyond what is public highway, and (ii) reduce ‘permit’ parking o/s Nos. 24, 26 and 29 Capstan Way by a total of 12.5m (32.5m remains); (d) in FINLAND STREET (i) north-west side o/s Nos. 1 to 58 Finland Street remove all ‘permit’ parking (total of 45m removed), and (ii) south-east side o/s Nos. 1 to 67 Aland Court split 91.5m of continuous ‘permit’ parking into 4 separate ‘permit’ parking bays with an overall reduction of 33.5m of ‘permit’ parking; (e) in FISHERMANS DRIVE relocate 20m ‘permit’ parking from the north-east side o/s Nos. 2 to 8 Fishermans Drive to a new location on the south-west side o/s Nos. 1 to 7 Fishermans Drive; (f) in LAGADO MEWS north-east side (south-east of its junction with Salter Road) reduce ‘shared-use’ parking by 19m (new bay length is 29.5m); (g) in ROPEMAKER ROAD south-west side, extend ‘permit’ parking north-westward by 1.5m o/s Nos. 4 & 5 Ropemaker Road (new bay length is 9m); (h) in ROTHERHITHE STREET (i) remove a total of 59m ‘shared-use’ parking on the south-west side at three locations opposite Nos. 329-339, Nos. 341-343a, and Nos. 347 & 349 Rotherhithe Street, (ii) convert a total of 67.5m ‘permit’ parking on the north-east side at two locations o/s Nos. 329-339 and Nos. 341-349 Rotherhithe Street to ‘shared-use’ parking, and (iii) reduce by 5m ‘permit’ parking on the north-west side to the rear of Nos. 1 to 7 Watermead Lodge, Princes River Road (new bay length is 45m); (i) in SALTER ROAD add new ‘shared-use’ parking (i) north-west side, from a point 13.5m north-east of the north-eastern kerb-line of Burnside Close north-eastward for a distance of 78m, and (ii) west side, from a point 18m south of the southern kerb-line of Cow Lane southward for a distance of 74.5m; and (j) in SHIPWRIGHT ROAD remove 2 areas of permit-holders’ only past this point parking (i) fronting Nos. 1-11 Shipwright Road and (ii) fronting Nos. 12-24 Shipwright Road which were erroneously added in the areas beyond what is public highway.

The effects of the (Free Parking Places, Loading Places and Waiting, Loading and Stopping Restrictions) Order are:(a) in SALTER ROAD north-west side (south of its junction with its south-easternmost junction with Rotherhithe Street), add new free ‘short stay’ parking 60.5m in length which would operate ‘at any time’ (max stay 3hrs and no return within 2hrs); (b) amend existing and add new DYLs to:- (i) accommodate all the parking changes in BYWATER PLACE, CAPSTAN WAY, FINLAND STREET, FISHERMANS DRIVE, LAGADO MEWS, ROPEMAKER ROAD, ROTHERHITHE STREET, SALTER ROAD in the above-mentioned locations, and (ii) to more closely represent what is in the street in FINLAND STREET north-west side o/s Nos. 1 to 58 Finland Street, and in SALTER ROAD both sides surrounding the existing pedestrian crossing in between its junctions with Byfield Close and Downtown Road; and (c) remove all DYLs which were erroneously added in the area beyond what is public highway in CAPSTAN WAY, FISHERMANS DRIVE, and SHIPWRIGHT ROAD. NOTES: (1) ‘permit’ refers to parking places for holders of valid parking permits within the Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) ‘S’ which operates Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 6.30 pm; ‘shared-use’ refers to parking places in which holders of a valid CPZ ‘S’ permit or ‘pay’ paid ticket holders are permitted to park within the hours of operation. (2) ‘DYLs’ refer to 'at any time' waiting restrictions. (3) All measurements are in metres ‘m’ and are approximate. (4) Parking charges are listed on www.southwark.gov.uk/parking 4. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 23 March 2023 it has made the above Orders under sections 6 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

1.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 29 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2.

The purpose of the Order is to facilitate play streets as indicated in the schedule to this notice.

1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 23 March 2023 it has made the above experimental Orders under sections 9 and 10 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

The effect of the Order is to prohibit any vehicle/cycle from:(a) entering or proceeding in the length of street specified in the schedule to this notice on the date and between the hours specified in that schedule;. (b) waiting (including waiting for the purpose of delivering or collecting goods or loading or unloading a vehicle) in the length of street specified in the schedule to this notice.

The prohibitions will not apply in respect of: (a) any vehicle being used for the purposes of that event or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes; (b) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by the Council of the London Borough of Southwark.

The effects of the experimental Orders, the intention of which is to trial the provision of active travel measures promoting walking, cycling and public transport modes and to deter motor vehicle through traffic, as part of the Council’s Cycleway 4 improvements, will be:(a) to provide two-way mandatory cycle lanes, averaging 3m in width and aligned with the nearest kerbline or island site, operational at any time and segregated from the adjoining traffic flow by either carriageway island sites or segregating bollards, at the following locations: (i) LOWER ROAD south-west side, extending from a point 4 metres south-east of the south-eastern kerb-line of Gomm Road to a point 34.5 metres south-east of that kerb-line; (ii) LOWER ROAD south-west side, extending from a point 27 metres north-west of the north-western kerb-line of Orange Place to a point 3.5 metres north-west of that kerb-line; (iii) LOWER ROAD south-west side, extending from a point 3 metres south-east of the south-eastern kerb-line of Orange Place to a point 12 metres north-west of the north-western kerb-line of Hawkstone Road; (iv) LOWER ROAD south-west side, extending from a point 2.5 metres south-east of the northwesternmost wall of Surrey Quays London Overground Station to a point 1.5 metres south-east of the common boundary of Nos. 128 and 130-132 Lower Road; (v) LOWER ROAD north-east side, extending from the north-western wall of Nos. 187-207 Lower Road to a point 25 metres south-east of the north-western wall of Nos. 187-207 Lower Road; (vi) LOWER ROAD north-east side, extending from a point 2 metres south-east of the north-western wall of No. 229 Lower Road to a point 11.5 metres north-west of the north-western kerb-line of Plough Way (vii) LOWER ROAD north-east side, extending from a point 7.5 metres south-east of the south-eastern kerb-line of Plough Way to a point 4 metres north-west of the north-western kerb-line of Chilton Grove; (viii) LOWER ROAD north-east side, extending from a point 5.5 metres south-east of the south-eastern kerb-line of Chilton Grove to a point 5 metres north-west of the north-western kerb-line of Croft Street; the above cycle lanes (and cycle track referred to in item 3 following) to be linked together by advisory cycle lane markings to form a continuous cycle route. (b) to provide a one-way south-eastbound with-flow mandatory cycle lane, operational at any time and segregated from the adjoining traffic flow by segregating bollards and 2 metres in width, in REDRIFF ROAD – extending from a point 30 metres north-east of the north-eastern kerb-line of Lower Road to the north-eastern kerb-line of Lower Road; (c) to provide a one-way north-westbound with-flow mandatory cycle lane, operational at any time and 1.5 metres in width, in ROTHERHITHE OLD ROAD – extending from a point 10 metres south-east of the south-eastern kerb-line of Hawkstone Road to the south-eastern kerb-line of Hawkstone Road; (d) to suspend existing ‘pay by phone’ parking places on the south-west side of LOWER ROAD (i) 20.5 metres o/s Nos. 172 – 178 Lower Road, and (ii) 5.5 metres o/s No. 202 Lower Road, and introduce ‘at any time’ waiting and loading restrictions to accommodate those parking changes; and (e) in LOWER ROAD north-east side between its junction with Redriff Road and its junction with Croft Street (i) convert all existing timed waiting restrictions (single yellow lines) and ‘at any time’ loading restrictions to ‘at any time’ waiting and loading restrictions and (ii) add new ‘at any time’ waiting and loading restrictions o/s No. 253 Lower Road to accommodate the removal of an existing bus stop.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE that it proposes to construct under section 65(1) of the Highways Act 1980 a two-way segregated cycle track for the use of pedal cycles only, in LOWER ROAD north-east side, comprising of a 3 metre wide corridor indicated by a traffic sign within the north-eastern footway, extending from a point on the north-eastern kerb-line of Lower Road 25 metres south-east of the north-western wall of Nos. 187-205 Lower Road to a point 1.5 metres northwest of the north-western kerb-line of the southern vehicular access to Osprey Estate, Lower Road. An informal pedestrian crossing point with ‘zebra’ type markings would be provided across the cycle track to enable pedestrians to access the bus stop located at the carriageway kerbside within this length.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE under sections 90A to 90I of the Highways Act 1980 and in accordance with the provisions of the Highways (Road humps) Regulations 1999 and the Highways (Traffic calming) Regulations 1999, propose to construct speed tables of flat-top construction having a maximum height level with the surrounding kerb in LOWER ROAD:(a) covering the entire width of the cycle lane referred to in item 2(a)(ii) above, extending from a point 12 metres north-west of the north-western kerb-line of Orange Place north-westward for a distance of 6 metres; and (b) covering the entire length and width of the cycle track in item 3 above.

Still, the visitors had plenty of chances to go in front early on. Michael Sarpong’s effort was cleared off the line before at the other end Fish goalkeeper Sam Amedu saved at full stretch.

Big Yellow Storage CEO Jim Gibson has generously funded the project and allowed the club to provide close to 200 rugby coaching sessions this season alone through their partnership with London Irish RFC. The partnership allows pupils to learn and develop under the guidance of top-quality professional coaches while further developing through regular playing opportunities at the many school festivals held at the club.

PE teacher James Bower at Sacred Heart School explained: “The rugby programme has been fantastic for the Year 8 students involved. It has improved their confidence and

teamwork skills as well as giving them experience competing in a sport they may not have had the opportunity to play.”

The ALL-STARS project has been in the pipeline for the past three seasons and has only been made possible by the construction of the new 3G floodlit pitch at Burgess Park. Weekly sessions have been taking place on Wednesday evenings in a bid to allow local students more development time.

The reality is that urban students face a huge gap in development as many Grammar or fee-paying schools will train at least three times a week.

Southwark Tigers ALL-STARS gear up for maiden fixture

The team consists of players selected from eleven secondary schools who take part and compete in the club’s community coaching program. The schools program was created five years ago to proactively encourage local pupils to try rugby. What started with just four schools has expanded to eleven with over 600 pupils taking part each season.

I’m using what I’ve been gifted with and obviously developing more skill.

So when I’m finding an opportunity I can blast them out.

“I’ve been studying how to knock people out. I just know what to do now, I know exactly what to do, what shots to land, when to land them and that’s why I’ve grown in confidence.

“It’s not about punching power really.

People think it’s about power but it’s the accuracy of the punches and it’s about where you’re landing as well.

“It’s not that easy to break somebody’s jaw, or eye socket, or orbital bone. You have to punch the right place.

‘The Midnight Train’ added: “If you make a mistake, you’re going to pay.

You’re going to pay big. Especially with someone like myself, with my punching power, you’re going to pay big. Now I’m confident, I know what I’m doing and I’m ready to excel at a high level.”

Brixton horse rider has big ambitions

A TEENAGE horse rider who first learned to ride at Ebony Horse Club in Brixton has graduated from the prestigious British Racing School in Newmarket.

Jesse Raven, 16, from Brixton, and who attended Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich, first got into horse racing when he attended the Riding A Dream Academy in August 2021. Jesse was one of ten students who attended the Academy’s first-ever Residential Week which is designed to support young people aged 14-18 from diverse communities, inner cities and urban equestrian centres into British horse racing.

Jesse spent twelve weeks at the British Racing School on their Foundation Course which prepares young people for work as stable staff in horse racing, working with and riding racehorses each day. He becomes the third Riding A Dream Academy student to graduate from the Foundation Course and head into work in the racing industry.

Jesse said: “I have absolutely loved my time at the British Racing School and am sad to be leaving. When I first came on the Riding A Dream Residential Week in 2021 I was riding the pony Flossie and just starting out riding in jockey pose. Now I am riding racehorses up the straight gallop and heading into a racing yard to work.

“I can’t believe how much I’ve improved. I never thought I’d improve so much in such a short period of time.

“When I am on the straight gallop, I’ve had no feeling like it, just the adrenaline going through you makes you so happy and it makes me smile so much. I am at my happiest when I am cantering a racehorse on the straights.

“My hopes for the future are to go onto an apprenticeship as a work rider before coming back to the British Racing School for my end-point assessment and then going for my jockey license to become a flat jockey.”

This was their fourth victory over a Greater London League side in this competition for senior teams, and they will probably be seen as underdogs against Brentford B in the final. It was a physical challenge all game, and it took until the 83rd minute for sixteen-year old substitute Margret Adekunde to hit the winner.

The Lionesses Academy had only last week celebrated winning their division of the Junior Premier League under-14s so the future looks bright for the continuing recovery back to the FA Championship they left in 2019.

Wheeler’s side face Dartford this Sunday at St Paul’s. Kick-off is at 1.30 pm.

Goals from Lily Price in the 20th minute and Madi Parsonson in the 45th and 68th minutes sealed the three

points. Katie O’Leary was on target for the visitors in front of an attendance of 276 at Champion Hill.

It was a seventh successive game unbeaten for the Hamlet in the London and South East Women’s Regional Football League. Dulwich have scored 24 goals in that run.

The Hamlet are next in action on Saturday, April 2 when they host A.F.C. Acorns 1st Women in the league.

There was the usual sizeable crowd for this fixture, but the first half was an example of two sides with too much respect for each other, and there were few highlights other than a Jas Auguste freekick which sailed wide.

Former AFC Wimbledon striker Dominic Poleon scored all four goals for an Ebbsfleet side that are on the verge of winning the title and claiming the one automatic promotion spot to the National League.

Hakan Hayrettin’s Hamlet have dropped to 20th, with just one point separating them from Cheshunt in the relegation zone.

Hungerford Town are three points behind with a game in hand and a better goal difference, and even bottom side Concord Rangers could be a threat as they are seven points off Dulwich but with five games in hand.

In a frantic opening to the game at Stonebridge Road, Poleon opened the scoring in the third minute before Joe Felix levelled three minutes later.

It took only another three minutes for Poleon to restore the hosts’ lead and he completed his hat-trick in the 38th minute.

George Porter reduced the deficit on 62 minutes but Poleon got his fourth eleven minutes from time to seal the win.

Hayrettin’s side had other chances to upset the league-leaders and missed a penalty. Felix had a goal ruled out in the eighteenth minute when Porter was flagged offside.

Mark Cousins was also kept busy in the Fleet goal as he denied Felix, while Danny Mills headed narrowly wide three minutes before half-time.

A minute into first-half added-time Cousins then produced a brilliant doublesave to deny Porter.

Former Tottenham striker Shaq Coulthirst beat Dulwich goalkeeper Charlie Grainger but not the post in the 56th minute as the hosts tried to extend their lead.

Instead, Porter gave the visitors hope when he latched onto Mills’ flick to finish at the second attempt.

For supporters, there were always two different ways to look at the game. On the one hand, some fans expected that the Lions would secure an easy win given the fact that their opponents were sat in the relegation zone heading into the game.

Their season has been nothing short of disastrous since reaching last season’s play-off final, having won just once in the Championship since the start of 2023.

On the other hand, it was clear what Neil Warnock’s game plan would be, with other struggling sides often taking points off Millwall by sitting deep and soaking up pressure. However, Gary Rowett has recently found a way around this, and it looked like they would do so again in the opening stages of Saturday’s game.

Tom Bradshaw had the first chance after picking up the ball from a goal kick that Tom Lees miscalculated, but he was shrugged off the ball before he could get his shot away.

Arguably their best opportunity of the entire match came in the seventh minute when George Honeyman combined with Murray Wallace down the left, allowing the defender to play the ball into the box for Andreas Voglsammer. The German, who was looking to score for the third successive game, ended up scooping his shot over the bar from point-blank range, although it looked like the opening goal was inevitable.

Millwall were edging closer, with Charlie Cresswell strangely popping up in the final third to cut inside from the right and curl a shot at Europa League winning goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik, who made the save. The centre-back had another chance in the eighteenth minute when he picked up the ball down the right, Cruyff-turning

around and stinging the gloves of Vaclik once again before George Saville could fire the rebound wide.

Twelve minutes later, Zian Flemming broke free from his marker to play a quick one-two with George Honeyman, allowing the Dutchman to take aim from the edge of the box. He curled his low shot just wide of the post as the Terriers were given yet another let-off.

Cresswell’s presence in the final third continued, pushing forward and launching a shot over the bar two minutes later. Huddersfield replied by setting up even more defensively, frustrating Millwall massively. Bradshaw attempted a bicycle kick inside the box after Saville’s free-kick, with Wallace rushing in to try and win the rebound before it was cleared

by the visitors.

It kickstarted a late flurry just before half-time as Josh Koroma was brought down inside the box by Danny McNamara.

The referee waved play on, allowing Millwall to counter and test Vaclik with a powerful effort from Voglsammer.

The Czech international made the save, allowing the Terriers to hold on until the break.

Huddersfield’s game plan really came to fruition as they dropped bodies back and soaked up the pressure. Millwall pushed forward but were pinned to the edge of the box where they were limited to longrange shots from Flemming. His first was a free-kick in the 50th minute that flew into the back of the Cold Blow Lane end, while his second was a powerful shot from distance that ended up in the same part of the stadium in the 64th minute.

At that point, Gary Rowett had seen enough. He made attacking changes and ended up paying the price as his side went 1-0 down in the 67th minute.

Danny McNamara picked up a cross from Huddersfield’s right and looked to bring it forward before trying to clear the ball, but he was quickly closed down. Ben Jackson brought it into the box, playing it towards an unmarked Danny Ward who slotted the ball over George Long, leaving the manager furious.

Millwall were not going to go down without a fight, however. In the final ten minutes, Ryan Leonard blasted a powerful shot just past the post, winning a corner after it took a deflection. Bradshaw was brought down in the box as substitute

Romain Esse crossed it in, but the referee opted against awarding a penalty.

The seventeen-year-old was involved again after picking up a clever pass from Oliver Burke, but he was dispossessed before he could take aim. Seconds later, he found space to cross into the box from the right, but nobody could get a touch on the ball to turn it into the net. Seven minutes were added, but Millwall were unable to prevent their fourth home defeat of the season.

While some supporters were not surprised by the performance and the result, it felt like one of the Lions’ performances at the start of the season when they were physically and mentally not at the right level. In recent weeks, they have been clinical in front of goal and resilient at the back, but that did not translate into Saturday’s game.

Given their advantage on the teams below them, the loss is far from catastrophic, especially before the international break.

Rowett now has a chance to reset his team and help them learn from their mistakes ahead of the run-in.

Asked by the News earlier this month, manager Gary Rowett revealed that he considers the run-in to start in the final ten games of the season, but that the Lions’ clash with West Brom will really mark the beginning of the deciding period of their campaign.

It is, undoubtedly, an intimidating prospect. Following their 1-0 defeat at home to Huddersfield Town, the advantage on Norwich City in seventh place stands at just three points, but the positive is that their last eight games are much easier than their promotion rivals’.

Granted, the start is tough. A trip to the Hawthorns is always testing, especially since the Baggies sacked Steve Bruce and brought in a much more capable manager in Carlos Corberan. Former Millwall talisman Jed Wallace will also be out to haunt his former team, knowing that their play-off fate is in their own hands given the fact that they have a game in hand.

A home tie clash with Luton Town is much harder. The Hatters were unlucky to drop points in the reverse fixture at Kenilworth Road despite equalising late on through Luke Berry’s long-range strike, but they boast the second best away record in the division and will be confident of extending the Lions’ disappointing run at The Den which has seen them win just two home games since January 1st.

Their five matches after that are comparatively easy. Hull City, Preston North End and Birmingham City have little to nothing to play for, meaning that they will likely take a more attack-minded approach that will suit Millwall. The struggle comes when they play against teams that soak up possession and sit deep, much like Huddersfield did last weekend.

Play-off run-in analysed as Lions battle the weight of expectation The Lions have a three-point lead on seventh heading into their trip to West Brom their lives. Manager Gary Rowett may be hoping that the Latics’ relegation has been confirmed by the time they travel to the DW Stadium, which is a definite possibility given their three-point deduction for failing to pay their players.

However, Blackpool will certainly hope to take their fight for survival to the final day and may feel confident of grinding out a result on home soil.

Blackburn at home on the final day has the potential to be the biggest game of the

season depending on where the two sides are at that point. If there is something on the line for one or both of the teams, it could feel as big as a play-off final.

Overall, there are huge positives to take despite dropping points at home to Neil Warnock’s men. The advantage heading into the final six games means that Millwall have their fate in their own hands, and their favourable run-in makes them one of the favourites to secure a play-off place.

However, this will be a significant test of the Lions’ mental strength. For the first time, Millwall are the ones being chased rather than chasing the teams above them, and that dynamic could end up being a struggle for them.

As Rowett said, the expectation is now on them. They are no longer underdogs to achieve their goal and will be tipped to contest the play-offs in May. Anything short of that will most likely be considered a failure.

Veteran manager reveals how he shut out Zian Flemming at Den

alexj@southwarknews.co.uk NEIL WARNOCK explained that he put extra precautions in place to nullify Zian Flemming’s threat in Millwall’s 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town.

The Dutchman has already scored 13 goals in his maiden season in English football, having arrived from Eredivisie club Fortuna Sittard last summer. It has made him the top scorer in the team alongside Tom Bradshaw, but Flemming’s all-round performances have arguably made him the star of the team this campaign.

Many teams have struggled to silence him so far, but relegation-threatened Huddersfield were able to keep him quiet throughout the 90 minutes despite their poor form. He took five shots in total but just one tested Tomas Vaclik in the visitors’ goal, while one was blocked and three were off target. He created just one chance and generally struggled to find space to exploit in the final third.

After the game, Warnock said that the

alexj@southwarknews.co.uk ROMAIN ESSE and Aidomo Emakhu have shown that they deserve to be in Millwall’s firstteam squad due to their excellent mentality, manager Gary Rowett has said.

Esse, 17, came through the Lions’ academy, making his senior debut against Watford on Boxing Day 2022.

Emakhu, 19, joined the club just a few days after in the January transfer window, but his time at The Den has been tarnished by injury so far.

Nonetheless, there are high hopes that both youngsters will end up playing at the top level, with Esse in particular seen as one of the most exciting talents in the entire division after earning a call-up to join England’s under-18 squad.

Rowett believes that the way they approach their development is incredibly mature, explaining that they have a target of breaking into Millwall’s starting lineup next season.

“They’ve both come into the group for different reasons and have had different ways of coming in,” the manager told the News.

“Both are different types of characters, but they’ve both imprinted themselves on the group.

I don’t think they’re just two young lads who are just happy to be there.

They both want to do really well. You can see it in their training everyday, their mentality to train properly and try to stand out in training.

“I think Romain is a classic example where, sometimes, as a seventeenyear-old, you look and you say ‘does he actually embrace training or is he just happy to be there?’

Millwall supporters believe that Romain Esse could become a key first-team player in the next few seasons you get a young lad who gets in and he’s just happy to be there, to be with the first team, whereas you can get someone like Rom who plays and trains like it’s a game everyday.

“That’s what you have to do to get into the team. I said to Rom, for

me, the big thing for his experience is to be ready for next year, to be challenging for a place in the starting lineup next year. He certainly has the ability.

“We’re not really putting any limits or any expectations on this year. I

think it’s to get him involved, to give him some game time, and then it’s going to be up to him if he keeps impacting in some of the games like he has done.

“He’s found some of the games tough for different reasons, he’s found some

of the games a little bit easier, but he’s certainly shown some lovely touches and some lovely moments.

“He’s a really talented young player and I think he’s going to be a fabulous player for this club for many years to come.”

Jake Cooper believes that VAR is unlikely to be introduced in the Championship

The 28-year-old is one of Millwall’s biggest threats from set pieces given his height and stature. Corners and free-kicks are regularly delivered onto the head of the 6’6 defender, allowing him to set up one of his teammates or go for goal himself. So far this season, he has scored three times and assisted a further two

goals, making him one of the top scorers in the squad.

However, Cooper has often been manhandled by opponents in order to nullify his presence in the final third. It has frustrated the centreback, as well as manager Gary Rowett and the Millwall fans, all of whom believe that there should be a stricter application of the law in such circumstances.

At the start of the season, officials revealed plans to allow more physicality in football matches, but the anger has come from a lack of consistency on a game-to-game basis. Cooper believes that things can improve with better technology in the Championship, but remains adamant that this will not happen any time soon.

“I don’t think it’s going to change,” he told the News.

“They’ve spoken about it for the last three or four seasons about whether the rules are going to change. We saw big changes with the VAR in the World Cup, but that’s not going to happen at our level.

“It’s something we’ve just got to deal with and find ways to work around more than anything. That’s probably where my frustration comes from.

“It’s just still being able to cope with what the opposition throws at me. That’s more my target than going and having meetings with referees or what they’re doing.

“Ultimately, I don’t think that’s going to change.”

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT believes that Millwall’s form heading into the international break is irrelevant, but that his players will benefit from a fortnight off to recover ahead of the final weeks of the season.

The Lions will play their final eight games of the campaign over a fiveweek period, starting with a trip to the

Hawthorns to face play-off rivals West Brom on April 1st.

It will certainly be a busy run of fixtures, much like the one in February where they picked up twelve points from just seven matches, catapulting them towards the top end of the division. Their finale will be equally as demanding, meaning that the international break arguably comes at a crucial time.

Last month, Millwall’s first-team squad struggled to stay fit despite their

impressive form, with Rowett forced into making numerous changes to keep his team healthy. Aside from their four internationals, the rest of the players will have ample time to recharge their batteries, giving them a fantastic chance of achieving their goal of a topsix finish.

“I’ve said it many times when there’s an international break, I think that you have to accept that the break’s there,” the manager said after his side’s 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town.

“Everyone gets the same break, whether you’ve won, lost or drawn going into the break, whether you’re in good form or bad form. It’s kind of irrelevant.

“I think for us, we’ve got players that have put an awful lot of effort into this period of games. If you had looked at the period of games, people would have been disappointed to lose today [vs. Huddersfield], but we’ve beaten Sheffield United here, we’ve drawn to Burnley here.

“We’ve taken some big scalps here and played really well in games. We have to accept today that we’re going into the break a little bit disappointed.

“We can’t let that take away from what the players have done and the position that the players have put themselves in. It’s still a brilliant position to be in the top six with a three point advantage and eight games left.

“You can’t have too many games like today where you don’t quite do enough to win the game.”

Manager Gary Rowett is aware that they have not trained for a number of weeks and may need some time to return to their best. However, he stressed that, while he won’t push them too hard, they will be needed soon in order to rotate his team and keep everyone fresh throughout the promotion run-in.

He added that it will hinge on whether Millwall’s four international players can stay fit during the break, but that there is optimism that he will have a variety of

options to choose from heading into the promotion run-in.

“We’ve got Billy, Mason and Tyler, who aren’t a million miles away but aren’t there yet,” Rowett explained.

“I think the challenge then is that they wouldn’t have trained and played as much. I don’t necessarily think that, at that point, you can just chuck those players back into a team and be fine.

We’re still going to have to try and find that balance.

“It’s not going to be one where you’ve got two or three games to get someone

up to speed. Players are going to have to be ready to go into the team and affect the game.

“Certainly, the squad training will look a little bit healthier if those players come back with no injuries.”

Callum Styles [calf] is the only longterm injury doubt at the moment, having struggled to stay fit during his loan spell from League One outfit Barnsley.

Rowett refused to rule out the prospect of the Hungarian international featuring again this season, but admitted that it is unlikely given the severity of his knock.

Oliver Burke has scored once in nine matches since rejoining the Lions on loan from Werder Bremen, while Duncan Watmore took his total for the season up to six goals with his strike against QPR last month, although five of them came at former club Middlesbrough.

In terms of attacking output, the pair have arguably struggled to fulfil expectations in the early stages of their time in South London.

However, injury and illness have clearly impacted them in the last few weeks, while both have struggled to nail down a spot in the starting lineup over Andreas Voglsammer and George Honeyman.

Rowett admitted before Saturday’s defeat at home to Huddersfield Town that Burke and Watmore were almost chosen to start, but the manager ultimately decided to stick with an unchanged team for the third successive team.

However, he was keen to highlight

his confidence that they will be able to play a big part in Millwall’s playoff run-in, as they hold a three point gap over seventh-place Norwich City going into the final eight games of the season.

“I think it’s always difficult,” he told the News.

“Both have had a slightly sporadic start for different reasons. Duncan picked up an injury and then he’s been ill, so he’s sort of been in and out of the team through no fault of his own or through ours.

“Burkey’s the same. He was ill for a week, so he was out of the team, in the team, out of the team.

“What they’ve done is that they’ve

given us really good options out wide.

I would expect them to play a huge part in the last few games, I think that’s why we brought them to the club.

“They’re both very, very attacking options. We might leave ourselves a little bit less defensively strong, but at this stage of the season, two have that in there, both almost striker-type of wingers, they’re good options to have.

“I think they’re both good characters, they’ve fitted into the group really well and really quickly, and we’re excited for them to be here.

“It’s probably easier to judge that at the end of the season rather than a handful of games.”

Lions jet off for international duty

Most notably, Tom Bradshaw has returned to the Wales national team after a five year absence, having last played for the Dragons in March 2018. His redhot February form helped him earn a recall, with manager Rob Page clearly impressed by his run of seven goals in seven games since scoring a hat-trick against Sheffield United last month.

Wales will play two Euro 2024 qualifying matches before the end of next week as they travel to Croatia before hostin Latvia in Cardiff.

George Saville will also be involved as he looks to help Northern Ireland qualify for next summer’s tournament in Germany, with games against San Marino and Finland coming up. The midfielder has been crucial for his national team in recent years and will be keen to make amends for their disappointing campaign in the Nations League.

The Lions will also have two players involved at youth level for England.

Leeds United loanee Charlie Cresswell is back in the under-21’s set-up ahead of friendlies against France and Croatia, while Romain Esse has been included in the under-18’s squad to face Croatia, Belgium and Switzerland.

There is particular excitement surrounding Esse’s involvement, with the 17-year-old academy product featuring at international level for the first time in his career.
