East Dulwich GP practice tested urine samples in sink, say inspectors

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk An East Dulwich GP practice tested urine samples in a handbasin and some staff members’ Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificates had expired, according to a CQC report.

DMC Crystal Palace Road Medical Centre has been placed in special measures after inspectors concluded it ‘requires improvement’.

It will be inspected again within the next six months and if “insufficient improvements have been made”, the provider DMC Healthcare could be stopped from operating the service.

The report said: “We reviewed the practice’s infection prevention and control audit action plan. The plan also noted that there was no sluice at present and, at the time of the audit, the practice was testing urine in a handbasin.

“We were told by the practice manager that all samples were now disposed of in the clinical waste bin and that the practice had submitted an improvement plan to the

Integrated Care System (ICS) in March 2022 which included a request for funding to fit a sluice.”

Sluice rooms are rooms specifically designed for the disposal of human waste products and disinfection of associated items.

The report also found that Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks were only partially undertaken.

DBS checks allow employers to check criminal records to see if candidates are allowed to work with vulnerable adults.

It also found that the practice did not have oversight over temporary staff’s training, some of whom no longer had valid infection prevention control training.

Cervical screening and child immunisation targets were also “well below” local and national averages.

The report concluded: “The service will be kept under review and if needed could be escalated to urgent enforcement action.

“Where necessary, another inspection will be conducted within a further six months, and if there is not enough improvement we will move to close the service by adopting our

proposal to remove this location or cancel the provider’s registration.”

Anil Gupta, Southwark Practice Manager at DMC Healthcare, said: “We want to start by apologising to patients for being in the current situation of ‘requiring improvement’ following a visit by the CQC. We are working hard with our clinical and administrative teams to turn things around quickly with the help of external support, further recruitment of staff to answer phones and handle patient queries and see patients promptly.

“We have commissioned work with the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) to help analyse and identify a workable and achievable action plan, something shared with our staff and the CQC. “I am personally taking back control of running the practice which I had managed from 1990 for many years. Dr Ravi Gupta and I are fully dedicated to ensuring we deliver the best possible service and care and are holding oversight and actions on a daily basis.”

Developer Lendlease could still lodge an appeal against the council’s decision.

The office block would have filled H1 - the final plot on Elephant Park, which sits on the site of the demolished 1,200 council home Heygate Estate.

Although councillors on the planning committee were told not to consider the block’s ‘lack of housing’ as a factor, it often cropped throughout the application process.

This was partially because the H1 development was also originally earmarked

as being a ‘residential-led’ building.

Lendlease was able to change it to offices after it fulfilled its housing obligations elsewhere on Elephant Park.

If approved, the site would have contained 48,750 sqm of office space, nearly ten times the 5,000 sqm in the original masterplan.

The building’s 63,996sqm floor space was also double the 36,100sqm originally planned in the outline planning permission.

At the planning committee meeting, Cllr Kath Whitham said the building was so big it would be like “Ayer’s Rock had landed on Elephant and Castle”.

Mayor Khan backs council’s rejection of eighteen-storey Elephant Park office block

In October, the planning committee unanimously refused the Elephant Park application, citing its “excessive height, mass and bulk” and “harm to the character” of the surrounding area.

Campaigners feared City Hall would use its powers to override Southwark’s decision, but the Mayor of London’s planning department has said it will honour the council’s wishes.

Funeral Directors Albins “disheartened” by council response to cycleway woes

Last month, the News reported that the council had banned cars from turning right onto Lower Road from Culling Road, to accommodate the new Cycleway 4 from London Bridge to Greenwich.

Funeral director and company owner Simon Dyer said funeral processions were now being forced onto the gridlocked Rotherhithe roundabout After weeks of enquiries, Southwark Council finally responded to this paper’s questions. Cllr Catherine Rose, head of Southwark’s streets and parks, said: “We carefully considered all 1,220 submissions to our consultation about how we should

complete this final link in an important stretch of cycleway.

“In the temporary layout, the right turn out of Culling Road onto Lower Road is currently banned because drivers can’t see clearly to turn safely.

“This is because a barrier and road sign partly block the view. Turning vehicles would also need to cross a two-way cycleway, a bus lane and a northbound vehicle lane.

“We’d be happy to help with additional signage to assist Albins customers, if that would be helpful.”

But Simon Dyer said: “The council have completely disregarded Albins - a company that has served this borough for many years, leaving us feeling quite disheartened.

“We would always support road improvements in the area and cycle lanes.

However, I have always been against the cycle highways and feel they are a huge waste of public money at a time when it

could be far better spent.

“I have been in contact with Southwark Highways to express my concerns about the cycle highway going across Culling Road as it is a much busier road than I feel they realise!”

Paul Bowers, Lib Dem co-ordinator for Rotherhithe and Surrey Docks, has written to the council hoping to persuade them to reconsider the road changes.

He said: “Albins is a well-established business and local service that supports people at their most vulnerable time and I’m disturbed by the lack of consultation with such an important local establishment.

“The idea that they have to take hearse and cars with mourners around a congestion hotspot is inconceivable.

“As a Lib Dem I support safe cycling, but the council should have taken the initiative and talked to Albins, asking ‘is there anything we can do and meet you halfway?’”

“None of us need to suffer alone”: Annual Albin’s Memorial Service warms Bermondsey and Rotherhithe hearts

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk People facing Christmas without departed loved ones enjoyed a heartwarming evening of song, ceremony and reflection at the Albins Memorial Garden Remembrance Service, last week.

Over one thousand people attended the service at the Albin Memorial Garden in Bermondsey, with hundreds more watching the online stream from home, on Wednesday, December 7.

As the temperature dropped to one degree, locals warmed themselves with wine, carols and each other’s company, as they remembered loved ones who are no longer with us.

Introducing the ceremony, Albins co-owner Simon Dyer said: “Families are facing the ongoing impact of losing loved ones and many are facing their first Christmas without a precious loved one or family member.

“Anyone who has been through the bereavement of someone close to them will know that while you never stop grieving, with support, eventually you can find a healthier way to cope and deal with your loss. We come together this evening to remember all those we’ve lost and let them

know we’ll never stop loving them.”

This was the 23rd annual memorial service, which was established by the late Barry Albin-Dyer after he built the garden in 1999.

The service began with the procession of the ark, inside of which are the ashes of thousands of paper stars.

Every year, people at the service write messages to loved ones on golden stars, which are used to decorate the Albins Christmas tree.

On the Twelfth Night, the stars are burned and added to the ark, continuing a decadesold cycle of remembrance.

There was also carol singing, words from the Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev’d Christopher Chessun, and a special video tribute to her late majesty the Queen.

Many families suffering loss are also being forced to contend with the stresses and trauma that come with a time of national economic crisis.

“During these difficult times, people experience feelings of stress and anxiety, of shock and denial, of deprivation and depression, and many are feeling extreme loneliness. But none of us need to suffer alone,” said Simon Dyer.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Parents are devastated that a Walworth primary school could be set to close, just nine months after it escaped the chop.

Southwark education boss Cllr Jasmine Ali is considering whether to begin consulting on the closure of Townsend Primary School.

Fewer and fewer pupils have enrolled over the last seven years, leaving classrooms with 79 pupil vacancies and a gaping £599,000 budget deficit.

If Southwark Council decides it’s financially unviable, it would close at the end of this academic year, after August 2023.

Mum Katy Scriven, whose daughter Jessica attends the school, said: “The parents are beside themselves and so are the kids.

“It affected me so much last time they spoke about closing but then we were given the hope that the school would remain open - and now it’s happening again!”

In December last year, parents were told Southwark Council would consider closing the school due to falling admissions.

This is because, under the current system, schools receive central government funding on a per pupil basis.

The News understands that sixteen schools are in a budget deficit due to falling pupil numbers, which has been blamed on falling birth rates, covid-19, the cost-of-living and regeneration.

But after a petition for the schools retention gained over 130 signatures, Southwark said it would not continue with its proposal to close Townsend.

In a letter written to parents in March, it would “explore every option for schools to form partnerships or mergers”.

It also recognised parents’ “strength of feeling” and corrected its earlier claim that the decision to consider closure had been school governors’ decision. But Southwark Council is now considering closure once again.

Townsend Primary school is not alone in its struggles. Falling admissions in schools is a problem in cities across the UK. But in October, Southwark headteachers blasted Southwark Council’s alleged contribution to the

schools’ admissions crisis.

Makeda Williams-Pinnock, headteacher at Elephant and Castle’s Victory Primary School, suggested regeneration was to blame. “[Regeneration] actually means a process of growing… and to be honest, all that I can really see growing in the locality is lots of bright shiny buildings because the indigenous population has been decanted far and wide and although a certain section of housing was promised to them they’ve actually been priced out of the market,” she said.

Cllr Maria Linforth-Hall, Liberal Democrat councillor, said, “For these families to believe they had saved their school after tireless community action, only to see it be threatened with closure again in the same year, is an insult from Southwark Labour. To see this crisis deepen with yet another primary school looking set to close is heart-breaking. Labour has spent years presiding over a boom in unaffordable housing in Southwark which has left local families with no choice but to leave the area, and left well-loved local schools at breaking point” Southwark Council has been approached for comment.

Camberwell Bishop’s fake Covid protection kits: How the preacher was convicted of fraud The News broke the

story in March 2020 - during the first lockdown of the pandemic

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Camberwell’s Bishop Climate was found guilty of fraud last week, well over two years after the News exclusively revealed that he was cashing in on the pandemic with £91 coronavirus ‘plague protection kits’ – made of just oil and red string.

During his trial the court heard how the 47-year-old told his congregation at the Kingdom Church, on Camberwell Station Road, that they could drop dead from Covid if they did not buy the kits.

After the News broke the story on March 31, 2020, a BBC investigation eventually led to charges being brought against him. Their secret phone recordings and testimony were key to the evidence against Bishop Climate.

Although it was suspected the church had fraudulently made hundreds of sales to its flock promising protection from Covid, the sale on which the fraud charge was framed around the purchase that the BBC had made on April 21, 2020.

Southwark Trading Standards also wrote to Wiseman, asking him to remove all mention of ‘plague/coronavirus prevention’ from his literature and websites and stop making claims about curing coronavirus. They persisted when he didn’t fully comply.

During the same period, the Charity Commission was investigating the church.

One of the many organisations that Wiseman was involved with is a registered charity called the Kingdom Church GB. The Charity Commission became aware of the oil being sold as a cure for coronavirus and asked Wiseman to cut all links between the charity and his business, Bishop Climate Ministries, immediately.

Despite Wiseman’s claim that the Kingdom Church had no connection to the sale of the oil, this turned out not to be so.

BBC London News investigated the church, along with Southwark Council and the Charity Commission. Their undercover reporters made test purchases at the Kingdom Church.

A Southwark Council spokesperson said: “We are delighted with this guilty result, it shows that no one is above the law.

“We hope that it will help to protect people from those who work to take their money, for any product that simply can’t do what they say it will. ”Wiseman’s claims preyed on people from the start of the first lockdown, a time

An expert in public health from Imperial College London told the court that Wiseman’s claims about his oil mixture were at best misleading, and an executive agency of the Department of Health and Social Care confirmed that in March and April of 2020, no licensed products existed for the treatment of COVID-19.

And in his own evidence at the Inner London Crown Court, it has been reported that the preacher claimed his mixture, made from cedar wood, hyssop oil and olive oil, had cured at least ten people who had the virus.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Self-styled prophet Climate Wiseman said Southwark News and other critics were the “antichrist” launching a “smear campaign”, during the media storm that followed the exclusive exposé.

In a YouTube video conference entitled ‘Update From Prophet Climate About The Evil Accusation Going Around On Media’ he warned followers to ignore stories about him.

“It’s a smear campaign that’s been run

by not any other than the secular, I’m talking about the secular movement … people that hate God,” he said.

He successfully convinced members of his flock of the media’s diabolical intentions, who attended his hearing in an astonishing show of support.

At his trial, demonstrators wearing matching red t-shirts held banners and placards declaring: “Southwark Labour councillors are anti-christ and faith haters”, ‘Bishop Climate is the true prophet”, “we need freedom of faith”, and “there is healing power in divine cleansing oil”.

They blew whistles, while one member climbed on top of a phone box and led chants through a megaphone of “freedom” and “leave us alone”.

According to national media, the undercover reporters it sent to meet Climate were also later accused of being the “antichrist”.

It’s not the first time the News has been denounced by Christian faith leaders. When it was reported that Southwark Cathedral had been silent on the controversial Thameslink 2000 scheme, this paper was denounced from the pulpit.

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Bishop Climate defended himself in court on the grounds of religious freedom and insisted he was not an “anti-vaxxer”.

Defending her client, Nargees Choudhary said he was was free to practise his religion and denied that he was “dishonest” or “acting in a deceitful way”.

The defence also argued that Wiseman’s doublevaccination status was evidence that he took covid seriously.

But in the dock, Climate insisted his oil, allegedly made from cedarwood, hyssop and “prayer”, had cured at least ten people who had the virus.

According to national media, some ten witnesses from his congregation, including nurses, said they were cured or prevented from getting Covid-19 after using the oil by steam inhalation or rubbing it on their skin.

National media reported that another church-goer, who was not accused of wrong-doing, claimed Climate had been instructed by God to make the mixture.

In appeals to his followers online, Climate had previously said: “I’m not exploiting people. This is not just a normal oil. This is according to the ingredients in the Bible and it is very expensive.

“We are not making profit out of it, all we wanted to do was offer a solution.”

West Dulwich housing estate plagued with damp and mould Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Kingswood Estate residents are terrified that their mouldy flats are ruining their families’ health.

Six separate families on the post-war West Dulwich housing estate told the News about the leaks, damp and fungus plaguing their homes.

Southwark housing boss Cllr Darren Merrill said he was “well aware of the issues” and that the estate “is undergoing £28m of investment in order to address the damp and mould”. But in the meantime, people like Begum Ahmed, 36, a mum-of-three living in Ransford House, are facing cold winter nights in a musky flat. She said: “I can barely leave the house because I get shortness of breath caused by mould. My children all have asthma and we’re constantly ill every winter. My immune system is down and we’re always coughing.”

She says when she calls the council, they “hardly clean it” and it soon reappears.

She has been told to wait three months until the next appointment.

She says she has previously spent £6,000 on plastering the walls to stop mould seeping through but this only worked for a year.

Built in the 1950s, the Kingswood Estate sits on the grounds of Kingswood House, now the Kingswood Library - a “Scottish-

baronial style mock-castle” built in the late 19th century.

After World War II, the now-defunct London County Council bought the grounds, building a vast council estate to meet post-war housing demands.

But since then, many of its 700 homes, which house over 1,000 people, appear to have fallen into disrepair.

In a September 2021 cabinet report, Southwark Council said it had begun “development of a specific damp and mould strategy, with a major pilot underway on the Kingswood Estate”.

Southwark Council told the News that works began in September, including increased insulation and new wall ventilation, and should be complete by March 2024.

A 33-year-old woman, who wished to remain anonymous, lives in Roundell House with her 79-year-old grandmother.

She says her home has become so damp that her floorboards have warped and that leaks in the ceiling have caked the bathroom in mould.

“The council has said it won’t deal with the floor because it’s not wooden, even though I’ve sent them photos saying it is,” she said.

She added: “My grandmother has sciatica and it’s getting worse because of the damp and I’m worried her health will get worse. I try not to get upset and frustrated.”

Debra Tapo-Ayodele, 57, of Holberry House, lives with her son and daughter, who have to clean the walls of mould

every day.

In 2019, her son underwent a tonsil operation due to his breathing problems but his condition persists.

Arinola Fadere, 60, thought she was getting sick due to old age, but now believes it’s due to the damp that has covered her home for the last five years.

She says her next repairs appointment is on January 10.

plaque to be installed in honour of hero jimi Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey hero Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole, who died after leaping into the Thames to save a drowning woman, will have a plaque installed in his honour.

Selfless Folajimi, better known as Jimi, a former pupil at Harris Academy Peckham, died in the Thames’ choppy waters on Friday, April 24, aged just twenty.

Local charity Living Bankside will erect the plaque at Cathedral Square, next to Southwark Cathedral, on Sunday, January 22.

Looking forward to the event, Folajimi’s brother Ayodeji said: “This event is a dream come true for the family as we have always wanted a plaque in honour of his heroism. We’re looking forward to this special day with family, friends and the general public.”

Aspiring musician Folajimi is understood to have been returning to his Bermondsey home from work on a Friday night when he spotted the woman, just after midnight.

Despite the serious dangers to himself, he was one of two people who jumped into the freezing cold water in a bid to save the woman’s life.

The coastguard and marine police patrols pulled the woman and the other man out of the river alive, but Folajimi could not be found in the high tide and rough currents.

His body was discovered almost six hours later following an extensive search involving police helicopters and other emergency services.

Tributes poured in for Folajimi, as friends and family remembered their “best friend”, “godfather”, brother and son.

Eugene Ankomah from the Salmon Youth Centre, which Folajimi once attended, told the News: “Jimi was such a wonderful soul who loved to try his hands in art. He was full of life and filled our art and music studio with positive energy.”

“Jimi, it’s going to be weird not seeing you grinning like you always do. Such a clean-hearted kid. To have been so heroic, this really hurts,” wrote one mourner.

Speaking ahead of January’s ceremony Amir Eden, executive chairman of Living Bankside, said: “Living Bankside is delighted to be able to recognise and honour Folajimi and look forward to the special ceremony.

“May his selflessness and compassion inspire people to commit themselves to helping others. Let us serve those in need in memory of him.”

Peckham coffee house wants to help 250 people at risk of homelessness get a job

By Isabel Ramirez isabel@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham-based coffee roasting company is raising money to expand their training programme to help 250 people at risk of homelessness get into employment.

Old Spike Roastery on Peckham Rye is a social enterprise coffee roastery, which is committed to supporting people at risk of becoming or who are currently homeless.

“Homelessness continues to be a massive problem,” said Richard Robinson, co-founder of Old Spike.

“So the idea was to combine a growing industry like coffee with a massive social problem and do our bit to make a difference.”

They do this through their barista training programme, that works to provide those facing homelessness with support towards getting a job.

Currently, money from every coffee bought goes towards this initiative.

But in the hope of making more of an

“We’re aiming to help 250 people in the next year impacted by homelessness by putting them through barista training, and preparing them for work.”

“Even if people don’t want this industry to be their lasting career,” Richard explained, “it can just be a way of boosting their confidence to getting back into employment.”

Nedyalka Petrov was sleeping rough around London Bridge when she started training at Old Spike. The coffee company joined homeless charity Beam to get her into secure accommodation, trained and employed. She said: “They have helped me so much. From working at Old Spike I have some hope for a better life.”

Old Spike have partnered with Aviva, who will match single donations up to the value of £250.

Suspected people smugglers arrested in Southwark

A Rotherhithe pensioner returned to his school after more than sixty years for a free Christmas lunch along with other local elderly residents last week.

Three suspected people smugglers in Camberwell and Peckham have been arrested in connection with a ‘highlysophisticated’ trafficking operation between Bolivia and the UK.

Bacon’s College welcomed seventy local residents for a free Christmas lunch including William Griffiths who left Bacon’s in 1958.

Guests enjoyed a three-course festive feast with turkey, all the trimmings and mince pies served by the sixth form students. The afternoon ended with a visit from ‘Santa’, Vice-Principal Tom Sargeant - who gave everyone a gift.

They were treated to a performance from the school’s choir and carol singing accompanied by the school’s band.

The staff and students were “delighted” to find out that one of the guests used to attend Bacon’s College himself, having left sixty-four years ago. William Griffiths went to Bacon’s College when it was still a boys’ school on Grange Road in Bermondsey.

Other guests included residents of Rose Court Care Home on Lower Road,

Rotherhithe and Greenhive Care Home in Peckham, plus neighbours of Bacon’s and some refugees being supported by Age UK. The event was part of Bacon’s wider mission to reach out to the local community and to those who need extra help during the cost-of-living crisis.

The gifts given by ‘Santa’ were donated as part of Bacon’s annual Advent Appeal.

College, a Church of England school, said: “Putting our faith into action means loving our neighbour as ourselves, having the eyes to see suffering and pain and loneliness, and responding in compassion by doing something to help. We also know that Christmas can be a time of intense loneliness for some too, so we were delighted that so many people were able to join us to celebrate together,” she added.

“About 80% of people carry on employment after completing our training programme.

“We’re getting up to helping our 70th person this year alone - so we really feel this makes a difference and want to invest more into it,” Richard added.

“We understand that everyone’s feeling the pinch right now. But if you happen to be buying coffee anyway why not buy it and help people in need at the same time.”

A man, aged 41, was arrested at a Camberwell address and another male, 38, and a woman, 35, were arrested in Peckham, on Tuesday, December 6, according to the Home Office.

They were all arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration.

Officers searching the Peckham address are also said to have found two suspected illegal migrants from Bolivia, two false identity documents and £1,500 in cash.

Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick said: “The public should be in no doubt of our determination to clamp down on those who violate our laws by exploiting people for

their own financial gains.”

Police made the arrests after searching several properties around south London, following an investigation by the Home Office’s Criminal and Financial Investigations (CFI) team.

The arrested trio are believed to have smuggled migrants from Bolivia to the UK, via the Republic of Ireland, by exploiting relaxed travel laws between Dublin and Belfast.

The Home Office believes migrants were charged thousands of pounds for the journey and would go on to work in the UK illegally.

All suspects were taken into custody in south London, before being taken to Belfast, Northern Ireland, for further questioning.

A further individual linked to the investigation was arrested in September 2022 by Immigration Enforcement officers in Northern Ireland and subsequently charged.

He remains in custody.

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Nurses at Guy’s and St Thomas’ (GSTT) Hospital are striking over pay this week as part of national industrial action involving 100,000 nurses at 45 hospitals.

On Thursday, December 15, and Tuesday, December 20, “exhausted” nurses will down their scrubs and take to pickets from 7.30am to 8pm.

After rejecting the government’s 4.75 per cent pay offer, they are demanding an above-inflation salary boost of 17.6 per cent.

According to an economist from the Institute for Fiscal Studies, nurses have had a more than ten per cent real terms pay cut since 2010.

An Elephant and Castle learning disability nurse who wished to remain anonymous said: “It would not be my first choice to strike but something has to be done.

the medium nurse’s salary is £34,000 but this nurse says she supports her four children on £28,000 despite having five years’ experience.

The Royal College of Nursing, the union organising the strikes, says improving nurses’ pay will stop nurses leaving the profession.

GSTT has said some routine and non-

urgent appointments and procedures will be postponed and that they’ll contact patients directly when this happens.

Services like critical care units, chemotherapy services, neonatal and paediatric intensive care units and paediatric A&E will remain open.

“We are communicating directly with all patients who have been affected and will be rearranging their appointments as quickly as possible.”

Health Secretary Steve Barclay said

But those who come under ‘less severe’ categories, including mothers in the late stages of labour or elderly people who have had a fall, may not get an ambulance.

From 2021 to 2022 in Southwark, the average response time for category two incidents, including strokes and heart attacks, was already over 25 minutes, well beyond the eighteenminute guideline, according to NHS data.

In September, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood Helen Hayes said soaring ambulance response times were creating “fear and anxiety” for her constituents.

Speaking to the News about the latest round of strikes, she said: “I support the right of public sectors to take industrial action.

“We’re seeing strike action across lots of very different public services.

These are the Tory government’s strikes - a failure of the Conservatives to take care of public sector workers in the first place.

“Anybody working in healthcare doesn’t strike because they want to strike - it’s because it’s an absolute last resort.”

“We are working tirelessly long hours because the NHS is short on staff and during covid some staff decided not to come back because they could earn good money elsewhere.”

When she spoke to the News, she said she was working on a ward requiring ten nurses but they only had five.

According to the NHS Pay Review Body,

nurses’ demands are “neither reasonable nor affordable” and that its pay offer had been recommended by the independent NHS pay board.

“Despite the immense economic challenges this country faces, we accepted the recommendations of this independent body in full,” he said.

He added: “This means that we are giving over one million non-medical NHS workers a pay rise of at least £1,400 this year, on top of a 3% pay increase last year when wider public sector pay was frozen.”

Nurses at King’s College Hospital and South London and Maudsley NHS Trust are not striking.

paramedics: “The government is putting lives at risk – not us”

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Paramedics at the Waterloo ambulance station will strike on Wednesday, December 21, in a bid to secure improved pay and conditions.

From midday until midnight, UNISON members working for the London Ambulance Service will continue to offer “life and limb cover” but cut back on non-emergency response.

A UNISON spokesperson said the government’s 4.75 per cent salary increase offer would “deepen the severe staffing crisis” and “put patients’ lives at risk”.

According to the College of Paramedics, pay is often highlighted “as a reason for leaving and a potential tool for retaining existing staff.”

In a public statement, a UNISON representative said: “We know that our members never take the decision to strike lightly, but the failure of the

government to meet with the trade unions and to engage in genuine talks about NHS pay… means it’s the government that are putting patients’ lives at risk on a daily basis, not our members who are taking strike action.”

Firefighters could be next

Firefighters at Dockhead and Southwark fire stations are voting on whether to strike following a 5 per cent pay offer.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) described the proposal as “derisory” and is balloting its 32,000 members from December 5 to January 30.

Matt Wrack, FBU general secretary, said: “Strike action will always be a last resort. But we are running out of options.

Many firefighters and control staff are desperate.

“Some are struggling to afford for they and their families to live. It is a dreadful and very serious state of affairs.

“We are doing everything we can to secure a decent offer. We have held talks with and written letters to many different parties. But no such pay offer has been forthcoming.”

Rotherhithe postie slams Royal Mail’s working conditions ahead of strikes

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Letters “are piling high” in the Southwark delivery offices as Royal Mail postal workers continue their walk-outs.

Roughly 115,000 CWU union members furious with “unreasonable” working conditions and “unfair” pay will strike on December 15, 23 and 24, the latest escalation in a long-running dispute.

They have rejected a 9 percent pay rise, demanding an increase in line with RPI inflation which soared to 11.1 per cent in October.

But for a Rotherhithe postie, who wished to remain anonymous, conditions are more important than pay: “There are mothers who started that job because it suited them taking their kids to school and then picking them up. Now they’re being told to work start later and finish later!

“People are being sacked for sickness just as we’re coming up to Christmas that’s the kind of people we’re dealing with.”

Royal Mail has now warned customers to send Christmas cards by December 19 if second class, and by December 21

Bus strikes

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Bus drivers working various Southwark routes have continued their strike this week, causing havoc for commuters across the borough.

Unite union members working for bus operator Abellio are unhappy about pay and walked out last Friday and Sunday. They will also be taking industrial action on Friday, December 16 and Saturday, December 17.

They have previously walked out on November 22, 25, and 26 and on December 1, 2, 3, 13 and 14.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Abellio is a vastly wealthy multinational company that could and should be paying its workers a fair pay increase.”

Drivers based at garages in Battersea, Beddington, Hayes, Southall, Twickenham and Walworth are part of the walk-out.

On Thursday, December 8, Unite secured an 11 per cent pay increase for Metroline drivers in London.

That strike would have involved 2,000 drivers, mainly affecting routes across North and West London.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said the “greatly improved pay

The anonymous postal worker told the News that although strikes had been exacerbated post delays, they were already being caused by Royal Mail’s “policy of prioritising parcels” to keep up with companies like Amazon.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Royal Mail does not operate a policy of prioritising parcels. We regularly remind colleagues that the delivery, collection and processing of letters and parcels should be treated with equal importance.”

MP for Dulwich and West Norwood Helen Hayes said East Dulwich residents have been struggling with postal delays for years and that “disruption bears no relationship to the strikes at all”.

Her constituents have long been reporting six-week delays to important letters containing passports, medical documents and fines.

Helen Hayes said: “I visited a local delivery office while the industrial action was ongoing and they said when they strike, they are cleared within two or three days. I don’t think our delays are related to the strike.”

She said Royal Mail had sold the branch for £7 million and failed to reinvest it in providing effective local postal delivery.

“I want Royal Mail to look at what they need to do in order to be able to deliver a consistently reliable service as they are legally advised to do under the universal service obligation,” she said.

Postal workers are also accusing Royal Mail of modernising at the expense of workers’ jobs as it adapts to a more parcel-orientated industry.

In March 2021, union bosses and the Royal Mail CEO Simon Thompson signed ‘The Pathway to Change’, a document recognising the need to modernise while safeguarding jobs and conditions.

The document said that Royal Mail Group (RMG) “will avoid compulsory redundancies”. Workers claim Royal Mail rowed back on this promise when it announced there would be 10,000 job losses by next year.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “The CWU is striking at our busiest time, holding Christmas to ransom for our customers, businesses and families across the country.

“We have well-developed contingency plans in place to minimise delays and

Train strikes affecting Southwark

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Railway bosses are urging commuters to plan Christmas travel plans carefully, with strikes set to disrupt train travel across London.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) says 40,000 members working for Network Rail and the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) will walk out over the festive period.

People traveling through Southwark, which is served by Southeastern, Thameslink and London Overground routes, will be affected.

There will be 48-hour strikes on the following dates: 16-17 December 24-27 December

3-4 January 6-7 January Southeastern Southeastern runs trains through much of south-east London, including London Bridge, Blackfriars, Elephant and Castle, Peckham, Denmark Hill and Nunhead.

The company has confirmed it will be affected by all the 48-hour strikes listed above.

Bosses are urging customers to avoid all travel on Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14, Friday 16 and Saturday, 17 December, unless its absolutely necessary.

They say there will be a limited service running on the network and some routes will be closed altogether.

Strike action will also affect services on Christmas Eve and December 27.

Southeastern do not run trains on

Christmas Day or Boxing Day. They are yet to give travel advice after the new year.

Thameslink Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) runs trains through several Southwark stations, including London Bridge, Elephant & Castle, Denmark Hill and Herne Hill. The company has also confirmed it will be hit by all the 48hour strikes listed above.

Customers have been told to avoid all travel on strike days unless it’s absolutely necessary and to check their journeys at NationalRailEnquiries. co.uk.

London Overground Much of the London Overground network is served by Network Rail so it will be hit by all the strike dates listed.

Rye Lane, directed by Raine Allen-Miller, will premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival in January - the biggest independent film festival in the United States, based in Utah.

The romantic comedy stars Vivian Oparah (Class, The Rebel) and David Jonsson (Industry, Deep State), as Yas and Dom, two

twenty-somethings both reeling from bad break-ups, who connect over the course of an eventful day in south east London.

The film sees them help each other deal with their nightmare exes, and potentially restoring their faith in romance.

Rye Lane is an original screenplay from cowriters Nathan Bryon (Bloods, Apple Tree House) and Tom Melia (Bloods, Zero Chill).

It is produced by Yvonne Isimeme Ibazebo of Turnover Films (Top Boy, Guerrilla), and Damian Jones of DJ Films (The Lady in the Van, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie).

BBC Film helped to develop and fund the film, along with Searchlight Pictures and the BFI (with the National Lottery). Following the festival, it will be released in UK cinemas on 17 March next year.

The suspect was arrested on Saturday evening, December 10, in Lambeth, but has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

At around 4:55am on Saturday morning, officers dealing with a separate matter at Kings College Hospital in Denmark Hill came across a man suffering stab injuries outside the hospital building.

The man had been driven to hospital by a friend. Officers administered first aid and arranged for the man to be treated by medics.

The man, aged in his 20s, sadly died at the hospital a short time later.

The man’s family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. A postmortem Sunday, December 11, at Greenwich Mortuary gave cause

of death as stab injuries. Formal identification will be arranged in due course.

Detective Inspector Matt Denby, Specialist Crime said: “Our investigation is at a very early stage, however I believe the victim was stabbed in Clapham High Street at around 04:45hrs on Saturday morning.

“The victim was driven to hospital by a friend, but tragically his injuries proved fatal. As I begin work alongside dedicated colleagues and homicide investigators, my thoughts and sympathies are with this man’s family and friends. I can assure them of our total commitment to finding whoever was responsible and bring them to justice.

Link Age Southwark – which provides support to older people in borough who are feeling lonely or isolated – took part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2022 last week.

The Big Give Christmas Challenge is the UK’s biggest online match funding campaign, where they double any amount of money raised by organisations taking part.

They were aiming to raise £10,000 in just one week to fund vital transport services - and they have done it.

The charity beat their target, so the Big Give Christmas challenge doubled it bringing the total to £20,210.

The funds will go towards services such as their accessible minibus and escorted taxis so local people can leave their homes to attend a warm, safe and social space.

Edith, with whom Link Age Southwark work, said: “It gets me out of my home where I’m usually on my own during the day.

“I look forward to being in the company of others – it makes me feel less lonely.

“It’s great that Link Age Southwark arrange free transport. If I had to pay it, I am not sure I would be able to attend.”

“So now we have an online congregation as well as an in-person one as well.”

Gary is passionate about helping communities feel more connected to the church, especially those on council estates, growing up on one himself.

He said this what his new role will focus on.

“My new job is about working all across south London encouraging the church’s work on council estates.

“The risk is always that people on estates get neglected. So I think it’s really important that they’re not neglected by bringing the church to them.

“In the new role, I want to encourage parishes where there are estates to connect with the people there.”

He and wife Ruth are moving further

south to Croydon, where he will take up his new post as Dean of Estates Ministry in January. There he will develop the work of the church on all the estates in the Church of England Diocese of Southwark.

He is remaining as Chair of Governors at St James Primary School until his successor takes up their post, which it is hoped will be during 2023.

His final service was attended by a large congregation - including former and present North Bermondsey councillors, Eliza Mann, Anood Al-Samerai, Rachel Bentley and Emily Tester; the Archdeacon of Southwark and other local clergy past and present.

Gary said the send-off was ‘lovely.’

“There were lots of tears. They gave us a really good send-off.

“The church bells rang for us all afternoon which was very special,” he added.

“I love Bermondsey. It’s got such a distinct character and I love the people they’ve always been so welcoming.

“The congregation in Bermondsey will always be in our hearts and we’ll look back on our time here with great thanksgiving.”

Christmas and all other services will continue as usual at the churches, led by the other members of the leadership team.

Bermondsey vicar says farewell after ten years at local church

isabel@southwarknews.co.uk A vicar, who joined the church at sixteen after being inspired by a teacher at his school, has done his last service at a Bermondsey-based church.

Canon Gary Jenkins grew up on a council estate in Battersea in a nonreligious household. After not coming from a religious background, it was conversations with a teacher that inspired him to join the church.

“My Christian biology teacher was talking to me about his faith and that was a big turning point for me,” Gary said.

“I didn’t come from a church-going family so it was one of those unexpected moments in life.”

He said the night he became a Christian “was like entering another world - my wardrobe into Narnia.”

Gary joined the church aged sixteen, but he didn’t start working within it until later.

“To begin with I was a science teacher at a boys school in Tooting,” he explained.

“Then I went to theological college and now I’ve been ordained for 33 years.”

He’s worked in various different churches in south London, which he said is where his heart is.

A local policewoman, who repeatedly hit a man in the face after he was arrested, has been found guilty of assault by beating.

PC Claudia Pastina, who works for Central South Basic Command Unit – covering Southwark and Lambeth, was bitten by the man when they attended an incident in Stockwell Park Road on February 19 this year.

Alongside her colleague she approached the man and asked him to leave the address, but he refused, striking and injuring the other police officer with keys, before being arrested, the Met said.

The court heard that after arresting him for assaulting an emergency worker, PC Pastina then ‘delivered a number of strikes to the man’s face’.

Following a criminal investigation by

the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards, she was charged in August and placed on restricted duties.

The Central South Basic Command Unit officer was found guilty on Monday December 12 and given a 16-week sentence, suspended for two years. She was also fined £748.

The Borough Commander Chief superintendent Colin Wingrove, said: “The public trust us to use the powers we have fairly, professionally and act with the highest standards at all times.

“In this case the high standards we expect were not met. PC Pastina’s actions were completely unacceptable.

“We will always investigate allegations of wrongdoing and take the appropriate action. Misconduct proceedings will now follow.”

The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards is now progressing a misconduct investigation.

Serial rapist who struck in Sydenham hit with eighteen year sentence

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A serial rapist who “degraded” his victims has been sentenced for seven counts of rape, including a ‘vicious’ sexual assault in Sydenham, at Croydon Crown Court.

Darrel Rose, 36, (06/07/86), who was already four years into a seventeen-year sentence for rape, was handed a life sentence on Monday, December 5, with a minimum of eighteen years behind bars for sex crimes against two more women.

This sentence will ‘replace’ his previous sentence. He will be 56 before he is considered for release.

Police have praised the ‘great bravery and courage’ of the victims, in the face of the horror Rose put them through.

His crimes include seven counts of rape, assault by penetration and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent.

Rose, of no fixed address, but formally of New Addington, near Croydon, was first sentenced for a separate rape in February 2018.

That investigation prompted police to follow up with another woman who

had previously accused Rose of rape, but dropped the allegations because she was scared of him.

The court heard how that woman, referred to as ‘victim one’, was “viciously sexually assaulted” by Rose at a Sydenham address between December 1, 2010, and February 28, 2011.

He also raped her at an address in Luton between July 1 and July 31, 2011.

Police say Rose treated his victim “in a derogatory and degrading way”, posting nude photos of her online.

Officers worked with the victim and charged Rose on Wednesday, 5 August 2020.

A second victim, in her twenties, referred to as ‘victim two’, was raped outside of London and on multiple other occasions between Tuesday, December 1, 2015 and Monday, May 30, 2016.

Detective Sergeant Laura Thomas, from the Met’s South Area Public Protection Unit, said: “Darrel Rose treated both victims in a derogatory and degrading way. He was both emotionally and physically abusive and this sentence reflects the horror he put his victims through.

“Both victims have shown great bravery

and courage in standing up to Rose and ensuring he is made to answer for his actions. I would like to praise the strength and commitment they have shown throughout this case.”

There are specially trained officers who will listen, provide support and investigate offences where appropriate.

All Finnish! 3.5 metre knitted Christmas tree arrives in Southwark from Finland

isabel@southwarknews.co.uk In the last ten years, 326 Walworth Road has been five different businesses - but it seems the newest restaurant is here to stay.

Koma is a family-run Latin American restaurant serving a fusion of Ecuadorian and Colombian food. Kevin Torres, runs the business with his wife and their sisters.

“We opened here in August, after having a market stall in New Cross,” he said.

“There wasn’t much room there for big families and groups of friends to eat in as we shared the place with other stalls.”

Now in the heart of Walworth Road, there’s plenty of space for people to come.

Before Koma, the space was filled by various chicken shops and takeaways - but local and chair of the Walworth Society, Jeremy Leach, said they never seemed to last long.

“Businesses there never seem to last,” Jeremy said. “In the last ten years, 326 Walworth Road has been five different businesses.

“It always seems to be something different. But this new Latin American restaurant is finally making a go of it!

“It always looks busy.”

So has the ‘curse’ been lifted?

“On Walworth Road there are lots of takeaways and kebab shops - so there was lots of competition for the businesses before,” Kevin said. “Maybe that’s why they didn’t do well. We’re the only restaurant of this kind on the road. There’s also a huge Latin American presence in Elephant and Castle, who are our main customers.

“People always say how good the food is

But it isn’t just the food they’re going back for. “As well as having the restaurant, I’m part of a charity called ‘WellWater’ which works to provide clean water and infrastructure to remote communities across the world,” Kevin explained.

In 2018, they started that work in Nigeria, and the first community they worked with was called ‘Koma’. “So we

called the restaurant Koma to remember why we work - the bigger cause.

“As well as the name, ten percent of the profits from the restaurant go to WellWater - to build wells in villages like Koma,” Kevin added.

Wirmon Martat, a community group from Mynämäki, Finland, crocheted a Christmas tree when they couldn’t meet during the pandemic.

Maija-Lotta Vauramo, a member of Wirmon Martat said: “Our group is all about coming together and making things.

“The idea behind the knitting project was to create an activity to help combat loneliness by working together towards a common end goal - the Christmas tree.”

Twenty-five people in total contributed to the 3.5 metre knitted Christmas tree, which Maija said took a couple of months to finish. Working as a community they spent hours to knit together 500 patterned squares.

Everyone did their part at home and then they added it.

So how did it make it over 1600 miles away to Southwark?

“We wanted to share the message and inspire others to come together and make something, but we weren’t sure where,” Maija explained.

“Then our Anglican priest in Finland asked around and found this wonderful Anglican Cathedral in Southwark - so we decided to bring it over.”

The group brought it over to Southwark Cathedral for it to be put on display throughout the festive season, where it will be up for a month to see in the new year.

The group visited London from Finland last week, and stopped off at Southwark Cathedral to drop off the tree. “This is a very lively community here in Southwark - it’s lovely!” Maija said.

“Since Santa Claus is from Finland too - we thought maybe children could leave their messages for Santa under the tree.”

It’s on display to the public at Southwark Cathedral until the first week of January.

Former south London pastor is tackling youth violence head on

isabel@southwarknews.co.uk A former south east Londonbased pastor, who has seen ‘too many young people to count’ lose their lives to violence wants to empower communities to be part of the solution to tackling youth violence.

Ben Lindsay, who grew up in Lewisham, worked as a pastor in New Cross for twelve years. Before that he worked in the youth offending service, community safety teams and the mental health service. But about six years ago, something shifted for him.

“During my time as a pastor, I saw too many young people to count lose their lives to violence,” Ben explained.

“But then in 2016, a young man who I’d known since he was a baby was killed – and it just hit differently.

“At his funeral, his best friend gave a euology. And then he lost his life in Peckham five months later.”

This led Ben to want to address the issue of violence affecting young people more directly. With his background he had the experience, but he wanted to empower the community to be part of the solution.

In 2019, he founded Power the Fight - a UK-wide charity currently based in Peckham that works to end youth violence by helping communities who don’t feel equipped to deal with the issues when working with young people.

“I do think the issue is getting worse,” Ben said.

“We can’t just focus on fatalities. Hospital admissions for stab wounds has risen. The type of weapons kids are getting hold of is getting worse. And the youth provisions are no longer there,” he explained.

“When I was a youth worker, back in the

early 2000s, there was money available.”

Ben points to austerity as a reason for the increase in youth violence we’ve seen over the last ten years.

Since 2010, there has been over one billion pounds worth of cuts to youth services, which Ben said has impacted youth work, youth services and mentors.

“If you take all those resources away from young vulnerable people, you’re going to see an increase in violence,” he said.

“Often it’s on the way home from school when kids find themselves in trouble, yet time, energy and resources are really lacking during those times.”

Ben says that this is where Power the Fight comes in. “We want to be the bridge between the community and policy makers.

“One of the things we do is train anyone who’s front-facing with the issue of violence - like teachers, NHS staff, police officers, faith groups, community workers.

“We train them on things like contextual safeguarding, violence against women and girls, and cultural sensitivity.”

They also have a programme called TIP (Therapeutic Intervention for Peace) - which sees them work with teachers, parents and carers to help them to understand what young people go through: “Young people help design it.”

Although most of their work is about prevention, the charity also provides financial support to families that have lost young people to violence.

“Losing someone impacts people in different ways and sometimes a safety net is needed for things like therapy, debt

relief, court cases, time off work - that’s where a cheque can really help.

“We’ve done two fundraisers recently one at the Prince of Peckham - which was amazing,” Ben said.

But the most recent was at the House of Lords - when they partnered with Lord Hastings and Dean Forbes, a tech millionaire from Catford, who this year was named as the most influential black man in the UK. “Dean is the CEO of a billion-pound organisation: Forterro,” Ben explained.

“I connected with him and said I never see high net-worth individuals engaging with this sort of thing - and he’s local, so he’s aware of the issue.

The evening involved talks from different speakers, including parents affected by youth violence, as well as

an auction: “Idris Elba donated some VIP tickets to a show and Rio Ferdinand donated some tickets and a Man United shirt.”

They raised over £100,000.

“That was the first time (Power the Fight) have been able to bring in so many influential people in one room, and I hope it’s not the last,” he added.

Ben also sits on the Mayor of London Violence Reduction Unit and the Youth Violence Commission - using his knowledge and experience to advise policy-makers to address the everpresent issue.

Is fifteen-year-old’s tube map ‘fairer’ to south London?

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Sadiq Khan has been given a run for his money by a young transport fanatic who has created a tube map that is “fairer to south London”.

Fifteen-year-old Felix Dennis’ mum shared the map on Twitter, which has new stops in Bromley, Croydon and Dulwich, as well as an extended Bakerloo line down to Hayes in Kent.

It also stretches the Elizabeth Line to Gatwick Airport, and expands London’s tram network across the river to secure “north London buy-in”.

Elsewhere, the District line and London Overground extend down to Orpington, while the Jubilee and Northern lines reach to Sutton and Epsom respectively.

The Circle line would expand south to include Wandsworth, Brixton, and Peckham, while the DLR would run to Gravesend.

He even added stops at Thorpe Park and ‘Chessington theme park’ on the outskirts of the capital.

On Twitter user wrote: “The clash between the child-like wobbly handdrawnness of the lines, and the very grown-up, plausible awesomeness of the network in south London make this so much fun to stare at.”

Another said: “North London tram/ light rail system is a thoroughly solid idea, and there’s a lot of promise in some of those London Underground extensions. I’m particularly fond of his ideas for the Victoria and H&C lines.

It was my first visit to Theatre Peckham, a place I had only heard about, a community theatre that had been creating a buzz for some years and one that was really put on the map when the world heard that Star Wars Superstar John Boyega learnt his art here, writes Michael Holland...

Walking down Havil Street I could see the theatre’s lights shining like I was walking down Broadway. This is a theatre that has come a long way and wants everyone to know it.

Theatre Peckham looks quite new and the bar/foyer area was full of people out for a good time - A Scroogelicious time - and they got it.

In this update of Dickens’ classic Christmas tale of greed and redemption, written by Geoff Aymer, Ebenezer Scrooge is a Peckham local who was a nice boy when young but was lured over to the dark side with the bait of big money by Marlene Jacobs, a property developer who taught Scrooge to fill his own pockets at the expense of everyone else’s health and happiness: ‘If you can’t pay, be on your way’ became his mantra.

In this version for today’s world, the community feels threatened by rent rises and their beloved market in jeopardy of being redeveloped.

Scrooge doesn’t care for the locals or for the forthcoming Christmas for that matter, even when those he loved drift away leaving him friendless and alone in his luxury apartment.

A ghost appears via his voicecontrolled assistant when he asks it to play some cool jazz and gets the first shock of a long night when he hears the voice of his deceased former business partner and mentor instead. That was just the beginning of the end of Scrooge as we know him. More ghosts were to pay him a visit before the morning came.

But in amongst the familiar tale, we get some local flavour in the way of problems at the care home, gentrification, social cleansing, and

But this was about the practical side of this working-class Essex girl, not a hateful mother-daughter relationship because she was able to sell the flat Mum bought off the council and fulfil her dream of opening a Spanish restaurant in Walthamstow Village.

The dream, though, would soon become a nightmare as she battles with homeless Will ‘stinking and drinking, who uses her side alley as his toilet; warring with lecturer of psychology Stephen and his daughter Alice struggling to move on from the death of his wife and her mother; and ex-cop Warren, who has seen it all and always knows a man who can let you see it all again - for a price - and who fancies his chances with Kerry.

Stephen and Alice have pretty much

best, for alongside the seasoned professionals are many young members of the Theatre Peckham Academy, and all are given the chance to shine. And I believe we saw some future stars out on that stage grabbing that chance.

locked themselves away to dwell on their grief while each vies to be the saddest. The new restaurant, however, gives them an opportunity to venture out, but his first trip there was to moan that the shop El Barco replaced was gone and he had to buy his cat food elsewhere. Then he refuses to help her get rid of the begging and defecating Will from outside her establishment.

She’s a Leave-voting right-winger, and Stephen and Alice are not, but Kerry is also a business woman and continually tries to be nice and move forward with them to get their custom but the class and political differences make it very difficult. Add to the tension Athena repeatedly warning Kerry that the books are not looking good and El Barco is not making money, plus Kerry and Stephen starting an opposites-attract affair!

What could go wrong?

Well, just about everything in this funny play is filled with stereotypes:

Working-class Kerry gets racist with Athena as the business falls deeper into trouble, while educated Stephen becomes condescending with Kerry to end the relationship, Alice falls out with her father for ‘disauthenticating’ her, and Will’s mental health problems show a threatening, dark side, so no surprises there.

April De Angelis’s play Kerry Jackson does well to put a working-class woman with no filter at the centre of the work, in an industry run by the middle-class, which is a good start to pose the problems between Left and Right, Leave and Remain, while also holding up White Privilege and Classism for debate. Too much? Not really, because this production will change anyone’s opinions other than thinking Fay Ripley did a marvellous job of bringing Kerry to life.

s the year draws to a close, I want to wish everyone in Southwark a Happy Christmas, New Year and Hanukkah and to celebrate some of the amazing things we have achieved together over the last year.

2022 has not been an easy year.

The thousands of conversations I’ve had with people across our borough have been dominated by people’s worries about making ends meet and their anger that the Conservative government has made things so much worse.

What has been heart-warming is the response of our community.

Over the year, I’ve had the privilege of visiting community groups, businesses and public services across Southwark. It’s been truly inspiring to see the amazing work we are doing together.

As a Labour-run council we have put in place over £25million of cost

This year we also achieved the truly remarkable landmark of starting more new council homes on site being built in Southwark than in any year since the 1970s of living support for Southwark residents this year, including our Cost of Living Fund, Southwark Energy Saver Service and Warm Hubs. I want to thank all of the community groups who’ve worked hand-in-hand with us to make sure this vital support gets to those who need it.

success in our schools and children’s services, with 98% of our schools now rated Good or Outstanding, and our children’s social care services rated Good too. I want to thank all the teachers, school governors, social workers and many others who work so hard every day to ensure our children succeed.

We have also made big steps forward in our care for older people. In May we opened a new state-of-the-art nursing home, Camberwell Lodge. This will ensure that people with care needs are able to stay close to their family and friends and receive highquality care. We also introduced our nationally leading Residential Care Charter, ensuring better quality of care and better working conditions for our incredible care staff too.

I was also delighted to launch our £2million Anti-social Behaviour Task Force this year,

espite the crises we face, Sadiq’s bus cut U-turn is just the latest win in a year of tireless action from our Southwark Liberal Democratic group.

Looking back at 2022, it is hard to see past the seemingly perpetual crises that have left the most vulnerable in our society on the brink.

The cost-of-living crisis, Russia’s inhumane and illegal war in Ukraine, a government paralysed by its own incompetent self-interest and, here in Southwark, a Labour-run council lacking in ambition and willingness to implement the radical policies we need.

However, I want to use my final leader’s column of the year to end on a more positive note – even in the face of these pressures, Liberal Democrats are winning for our residents.

At the start of the year, the Southwark Liberal Democrats successfully forced the Council to commit to step up and spend funding from the climate emergency fund to tackle the Climate Emergency,

We forced the Labour mayor to see sense, and put the brakes on his senseless plans to cut buses after years of dither and delay.

In the summer, TfL extended the cycle hire scheme further into Southwark. Finally offering more residents access to green active travel Liberal Democrat councillors had been demanding for years.

Last month, after an extensive campaign from Southwark Liberal Democrats, Labour’s Sadiq Khan backed down on his reckless bus cuts. The cuts would have decimated our vital bus network that people in Southwark rely on so heavily and hurt the most vulnerable.

This U-turn is a huge relief for the people of Southwark, who at least won’t have to worry about

being cut off from the rest of the city on top of everything else.

The London Mayor’s decision is a vital reminder that, when we come together to represent our community and its demands, we can get the best outcome for Londoners. Through petitions, letters, campaigning on the streets and working with affected groups, we forced the Labour mayor to see sense, and put the brakes on his senseless plans.

At the last council assembly, our group secured a commitment from Southwark that they will explore providing free period products in all council owned buildings.

2022 has also been a great year for nature in Southwark. We exceeded our ambitious target to plant 10,000 new trees in the borough, planting over 11,150. I am also extremely proud that our Southwark Parks topped the league as the best managed in London, taking the prestigious Good Parks award. An amazing achievement thanks to the hard work of our Parks team, local Friends of Parks groups and many more.

There is so much to celebrate from the work we are doing as a Labour-run council and community working together. I want to personally thank everyone involved and to wish you all a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

In North Bermondsey, Southwark Liberal Democrat councillors have stood up for residents in the battle to stop the excessively disruptive Oceandiva party-yacht, whilst also tackling the ongoing issues of litter and supporting our estates.

In Borough and Bankside, we continue to give residents a voice on planning as our community continues to face constant redevelopment and we secured a commitment to see our Roman Mosaic returned to Southwark My colleagues in Surrey Docks

succeeded in getting Greenland Dock Bridge repainted, breathing new life into an historic Southwark landmark and supported local residents on parking issues In St. George’s ward, Cllr Maria Linforth-Hall won a Jubilee award for her tireless charitable work and Cllr Graham Neale has worked with the Dodson & Amigo estate residents and Bermondsey Community Kitchen to provide food to those in need.

Looking ahead, dropping temperatures and increasing costs represent more challenges for vulnerable people and those who support them.

That is why my Liberal Democrat colleagues and I will continue to represent and fight for our residents, ensuring no one slips through the cracks left by an uncaring government and an unambitious Labour council.

Sometimes we have to take stock of our victories to remind us what we can achieve with compassion and community action.

Blame cuts, not workers, for the strikes

W

hat a difference two years can make. In 2020, the government was encouraging people to ‘clap for key workers’. Now the Tories are telling people that striking union members are a threat to working families and, astonishingly, aiding Russia’s war in Ukraine. According to Conservative MP Nadhim Zahawi, nurses should recognise that strikes are “exactly what Putin wants to see”.

It’s a departure from the days when Margaret Thatcher branded the miners “the enemy within”. Instead, the Conservatives are less vitriolic, appealing to national unity instead. But the underlying message is the same - that those who strike are selfish, valuing personal betterment over the collective good.

But it is impossible, and unfair, to judge striking nurses - or any of those taking industrial action without looking at the past decade and the impact that has had on public services.

The NHS, relied on by rich, poor, young and old, has been decimated since 2010. In its first 70 years, the NHS’s average annual budget rise was 3.7 per cent. Between 2009/10 and 2018/19 it was just 1.5 per cent.

Meanwhile, historic institutions like the Royal Mail have been sold to private hands. As a result, profit has taken precedence, resulting in the degradation of working conditions and a postal service that was fumbling long before the latest round of strikes.

The litany of cuts to public services needn’t all be outlined here. The fact is, the sectors that form the backbone of society have been gradually eroded and sold off for years - decades even. This is inseparable from the crisis we see now. A crisis where nurses, railway workers, postal workers and bus drivers haven’t seen a real-terms pay rise in years - and are told to suck it up.

Not everyone supports the strikes. There are those who point out, for example, that the median salary for rail workers is £43,747, far above the national average. But the fact is, they are paid a fairer wage because they have strong unions willing to fight on their behalf. Deriding them for that delegitimates all our claims to better pay and better conditions.

It’s hard to judge the public mood on this issue. Even Labour, with its army of statisticians and analysts, can’t seem to work out what it thinks - hence their notable absence from pickets.

And the decision to strike in the run-up to Christmas is undoubtedly a risk. While it will cause maximum disruption to employers, strikers risk alienating themselves from the public, whose Christmas plans and, more pertinently, safety, could be jeopardised by their actions.

But as MP Helen Hayes told this paper, it is a last resort. Nurses and paramedics go into these professions because they want to help others. That’s why some hospitals, like SLaM and King’s College Hospital will remain open. Health workers, more than anyone, are uncomfortable with what they are about to do.

Defender Josh Hill, who recently played in a friendly against Chelsea under-21s and against Cray Wanderers in the London Senior Cup, has joined Isthmian League Premier Division side Enfield Town on a one-month loan deal.

Midfielder Jamie Splatt has also left on a one-month deal, to join Faversham Town of the Isthmian League Division One South East Division.

After scoring against Cray Wanderers in that victory, Omari Hibbert has joined the Isthmian League Premier Division club on a dual-registration deal. Those deals exist in non-league football where non-contract players remain

Hamlet Women were 2-0 victors at Dartford registered with their current club but can join clubs in other leagues.

Hibbert made his Wands debut as a substitute in their recent win against Kingstonian.

Defender Junior Savane also moved on a similar deal, to Isthmian League South East Division side East Grinstead Town.

Meanwhile, the Hamlet didn’t escape the effects of the current cold snap as their scheduled National League South game at Braintree Town last weekend was called off due to a frozen pitch.

Dulwich will hopefully be back in action this Saturday, with Concord Rangers due at Champion Hill for a 3pm kick-off.

Dulwich Hamlet Women bounced back from their 3-0 London & South East Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division defeat to Fulham with a 2-0 win at Dartford at the weekend.

Stone went close to the opener for the Hamlet in the eighth minute but her free-kick was saved.

The visitors went in front in the 22nd minute as Ella Wales Bonner fired in on the half-volley.

Dulwich had to dig in for the rest of the half and in the second half as the hosts pressed for an equaliser and Saska Reeves Priestley was the busier of the goalkeepers at Princes Park.

Dulwich battled to protect their goal in freezing conditions before finally getting the chance to seal the win when Bonner was fouled in the area. It was then over to captain Brit Saylor who kept her nerve to score from twelve yards.

The result leaves Dulwich in seventh place in the table with fifteen points from ten games, nine points behind leaders Millwall Lionesses.

Their next game is on Sunday, January 8 when they travel to Sutton United for a 2pm kick-off.

“We have been in communication with [Riakporhe’s promoter] BOXXER and it seems that it is real. Ilunga Makabu has a [mandatory] defence scheduled for next year. But any time he could fight in a voluntary defence [against Riakporhe] and I will be certainly looking forward to a new great prospect getting into the mix.”

It is an intensely competitive cruiserweight scene, with WBA title-holder Arsen Goulamirian also a potential opponent for Riakporhe.

Goulamirian’s representative Yohan Zaoui said: “After three years without fighting, Arsen has proven he is a true champion [after beating Aleksei Egorov in November] and he will be stronger in the next fight. He’s ready to fight against anyone and prove he’s the best cruiserweight in the world.

Smith or Riakporhe would be explosive and interesting for all boxing fans. I had an excellent feeling with Ben Shalom. I will be delighted to work with him on this fight.”

Riakporhe and Surrey’s Billiam-Smith are both part of Shalom’s BOXXER stable.

Riakporhe is slated to fight in January against an as-yet confirmed opponent and will have to win to ensure he gets a shot at Makabu.

“It’s going to be a big year for the cruiserweights,” Shalom said. “Richard will be out in January, Billam-Smith’s headlining December. Hopefully we see Lawrence Okolie back on the scene.

“It’s a huge, huge year for cruiserweights. [IBF champion] Jai Opetaia also wants to fight in the UK. Goulamirian does.

I’m sure we’re going to see an explosive cruiserweight division next year.”

Talks on for Riakporhe’s next fight in ‘explosive’ division

Riakporhe, 32, from Walworth, has worked his way into world title contention with an unbeaten record of 15-0. He is known for his fearsome power, with eleven of those fights ending inside the distance.

Riakporhe has handed fellow British cruiserweights Chris Billam-Smith and Jack Massey their only professional defeats over a combined 38 bouts in their careers.

“Absolutely, he is a tremendous fighter, he has come onto the world stage and I’m sure that we’ll be hearing from him,” WBC president Mauricio Sulaimain said of Riakporhe on Sky Sports.

MILLWALL MISSED out on another opportunity to move back into the top six after playing out a 1-1 draw against Wigan Athletic.

The Lions were presented with a chance to move clear of the chasing pack before the rest of the Championship resumed, but their 3-0 loss to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light ended up as their heaviest defeat of the season so far and piled the pressure on their clash against the Latics.

It was always going to be more complicated than it looked on paper. Not only did Gary Rowett’s side have to brave freezing temperatures and an icy pitch, but they came up against yet another new manager in former Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool defender Kolo Touré, taking charge of the first match of his managerial career.

The difficulty of the challenge was made clear early on. Millwall were close to conceding in the first 30 seconds of the match as Wigan pushed forward immediately. James McClean brought the ball forward down the left flank, firing a deflected shot at goal. It almost caught out George Long, who had to get down to parry the effort wide for a corner.

The Lions created some good chances of their own, threatening with both Mason Bennett and Tom Bradshaw after Zian Flemming’s good work. Neither were able to really test Jamie Jones before the tempo suddenly dipped as the half progressed.

Then, in the 33rd minute, the Latics took the lead after Callum Lang sprinted down the right flank. He set up Will Keane, whose initial effort was blocked, although Long had already dived to save it. After their flurry of chances, Millwall suddenly lost all control in the game.

Wigan started to dominate possession as the clock ticked towards the 70th minute, creating countless dangerous chances without ever really testing Long.

They failed to capitalise as the Lions began to ask some questions of the Latics’ back line in the final 15 minutes,

Lions hoping to down Luton in bid to return to the top six

The Lions will kick off at 11:30am to avoid a clash with the World Cup final, a measure that was brought in before England were eliminated by France in the quarter-finals. Manager Gary Rowett admitted that he has never experienced a morning kickoff before, but expects that it won’t impact his side heading into their trip to Bedfordshire.

A 3-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light knocked them out of the top six despite the rest of the division not playing, while Saturday’s match against Wigan Athletic provided them with another opportunity to move up the league table before they played out a 1-1

draw at The Den. Should Millwall beat the Hatters and one or both of Watford and Preston lose to Huddersfield Town and QPR respectively, then the South Londoners will head into their Boxing Day trip to Vicarage Road in the top six.

Rob Edwards’ side will certainly have something to say about that, however, although it has been a tumultuous few weeks for last season’s play-off semi-finalists.

Luton were rocked by the departure of Nathan Jones, who joined Premier League outfit Southampton in early November.

Chief Recruitment Officer Mick Harford took over for their 1-1 draw against Rotherham United before the World Cup break before appointing Edwards as their new boss fresh off his departure from arch-rivals Watford.

His start to life in LU4 has been far from ideal despite scoring the

opening goal against Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon. The Hatters conceded an equaliser just five minutes later before going on to lose the game in the 91st minute.

Despite their inconsistent form that has seen them pick up just one win in their last seven matches, Rowett is expecting yet another difficult match against a newly-appointed manager, something which he has always highlighted as a major difficulty.

“It’s exactly the same, we don’t expect anything different,” he told the News.

“It’s always a tough, physical game at Luton. With a new manager coming in, I’m sure that he’ll want them to find some moments where they’re playing in the same way that he wants them to play.

“He [Edwards] obviously did a good job at Forest Green and will have learnt an awful lot at Watford.

“We won’t have a big bank of games once again, it’ll be a similar game to

Millwall picked up an important point at Kenilworth Road last season prepare for. We know what we’re going to have to do to go and get a result there.”

Millwall will be without Callum Styles [calf ] this weekend, with the Hungarian international set to miss four to six weeks of action after injuring himself against the Black Cats on Wearside. Benik Afobe [knee] and Ryan Leonard [hamstring] are still doubts, but Rowett is determined to wait until the end of the week before assessing whether or not they can contribute on Sunday morning.

The Lions have picked up all three points from their nine matches where they have scored first, joining Manchester United (eight), Blackburn Rovers (twelve),

Preston North End (nine) and Doncaster Rovers (nine) on the list according to playmakerstats.

Rowett has previously stressed the importance of starting games well, especially after a spell at the start of the campaign where Millwall ended up conceding a number of goals early in the first half. Gary Rowett highlights key stat behind Millwall’s play-off charge

since switching from a back five to a 4-2-3-1 formation, and the Lions have looked much more solid since the start of October as a result.

However, Rowett has denied that he drilled this point into his players after their poor start, admitting that winning after scoring first is “just a factor in the Championship anyway,” “If you look statistically, if you score the first goal, nine times out of ten you’ll go on to win the game, or you certainly won’t lose

the game,” he told the News.

“That’s why that first goal, not making a mistake or scoring a goal out of nothing, is so vital in this division.”

As well as this, the Lions are incredibly strong when it comes to ending games. Not only do they tend to score late on, such as their dramatic comeback against Swansea City in mid-August, but they also have a good record when it comes to seeing out wins, conceding just two goals in the final fifteen of their 22 Championship matches.

“I think we’re also one of the best teams in the last fifteen minutes. I think we’ve conceded very few goals in the last fifteen minutes of games.

“I think it’s more about winning games in that last 15 minutes for us, I don’t think there’s a concern about losing them necessarily. It’s more about trying to win them and you need those options to do that.

“That first goal, we know it’s so important in this division. I think that really highlights it.”

Youngsters aren’t the answer EXCLUSIVE

The Millwall boss has regularly claimed that he needs more attacking depth among his substitutes in order to change games late on. In Saturday’s draw against Wigan Athletic, Tyler Burey was the only forward Rowett had available on the bench, with Benik Afobe still ruled out with a knee injury.

Despite this, he told the News that he would prefer not to bring in any of the club’s youngsters such as Isaac Olaofe, Abdul Abdulmalik or Romaine Esse, instead opting to stick with the players he has in his senior squad

ahead of the January transfer window.

“The players with the first-team at the moment are the players within our squad,” he explained.

“I don’t necessarily think it’s as easy as bringing a young lad up to be the answer. We’ve got quite a few senior players, I think it’s about having a likefor-like replacement in those areas to strengthen the last part of the game.

“I don’t think that it’s as easy as putting an 18-year-old up there to see if he can score a goal at the end of the game, I think there’s a little bit more to it than that.”

Millwall under-21’s are currently sat in second place in the Professional Development League and are the top scorers in the entire division.

As a result, Rowett and manager Kevin Nugent are both keen to keep the squad together as they look to challenge Bristol City for the league title.

Coops claims Lions can reach the top

IT’S FAIR to say that Millwall’s firstteam squad have enjoyed the cold weather in training this week.

Tuesday’s session had to be held at The Den after Calmont Road was snowed under on Sunday evening, although the Lions still spent some time at their normal training centre on Monday morning.

Centre-back Jake Cooper explained that he and his teammates have tried their best to make the most of the conditions nonetheless.

“It was covered in snow, Monday was mental,” he told the News.

“Training was great though, we built a massive snowman and used Hutchy’s shoes and shin pads on it. It was great.”

On the pitch, Millwall haven’t enjoyed the frosty weather to the same extent.

Saturday’s performance in their 1-1 draw against Wigan Athletic was lethargic and somewhat lacklustre, missing out on a golden opportunity to move back into the play-off places ahead of their trip to Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town.

“It’s a difficult one to sum up really,” Cooper explained.

“We were disappointed with the goal we gave away in the first half, but of course we chose a good moment to get ourselves back in the game.

“At the start of the second half, it felt like it was going to be all us. We were dictating

the game and I felt like it was a matter of time before we got the second like we’ve done so many times.

“We just couldn’t find a way to do it and maybe left ourselves a bit open. Then in the last ten minutes they nullified the game and slowed it down.

“It took the sting out of things and, with the [World Cup] break, maybe we just didn’t have the tempo to go and get that winning goal unfortunately.”

Some fans, as well as manager Gary Rowett, have pointed to the three-week break for the World Cup break as a reason for Millwall’s poor performances.

The Lions started well against both Sunderland and Wigan before their performance levels dipped dramatically as the games wore on.

Cooper, however, isn’t keen to point the finger at their lack of competitive football, although he doesn’t believe that it will be long before they are back at their best.

“The World Cup break was just like a normal international break really, it’s just a week longer.

“There was no big delay for us. It’s no different from what we’ve faced in previous seasons really.

“It shouldn’t have a big effect, but maybe three weeks without a game can give you a mental break from everything, which we didn’t really want at the time that it came because we were in such good form.

“It’s just about getting back to winning ways. We started that with a point over the weekend and we’ll look to build on that going into Christmas.”

The defender has been one of the Lions’ top performers since moving to The Den in 2017

Overall, Millwall’s season has undoubtedly been a success so far. “You couldn’t really ask for much more,” Cooper admitted.

“To be two points off the play-offs and seventh in the league, it means that we’re looking good.

“The table is so tight, so it’s going to take a run in form from any of those sides to break into the top six.

“We’ll have to do our best to be one of those teams, try to pick up results where we can and see where it takes us.”

“If you can put a run together and win back-to-back games or three in a row, it can really turn your season around.

“It did that for us earlier on where we won four games in a row. It’s just about trying to pick up a little run and improving our away form.”

On a personal level, Cooper admits he’s “been enjoying” the campaign so far. The 27-year-old has completed more blocks, interceptions, clearances and aerial duels than anyone else in the first-team squad, and his threat in both boxes has been a huge reason as to why Millwall find themselves within touching distance of the top six.

However, he also highlighted the switch in tactics, with Rowett opting to change from his preferred back five to a 4-23-1 formation at the start of October, kickstarting an impressive run of wins.

“We haven’t had great form of late. I think we’ve conceded six goals in three games, so that hasn’t been great, but we’re trying to settle into a formation that

gets the best out of myself and the players around me.

“Hopefully we can keep working on a similar basis and try to improve as the season goes on.

“The formation change gave us a bit of freshness at that period where we were a bit stuck. It gave us a different mindset with an extra attacking body on the pitch, and it gave us a bit more.

“Then again, you saw us go to Preston and we changed to a back five during the match, it won us the game.

“That flexibility is great and we’re going to need that as the season goes on. To be able to change that within a game is important, to limit the opposition and get the best out of the players that we have available as well.”

Cooper’s threat from set pieces obviously plays a part in that, with the Lions scoring from more penalties, freekicks and corners than anyone else in the Championship so far this season. In fact, more than half of their 27 goals in their league campaign have come from set pieces, where the defender’s height and physical presence gives them an obvious advantage.

When asked why his record in such situations is so strong, he laughed, admitting: “I think the lads just hit me more often than not!

“I think it’s my responsibility to create chances from them where I can. I wish I created and scored more, but that’s just my role with the strengths I have.

“I love being involved at the other end

of the pitch as well. I try to dominate both boxes, that’s what the top centre-halves in the world do.”

Of course, his impressive form will always come with links to other clubs, something which has regularly come up since he moved to The Den in 2017.

Beaten Europa League finalists Rangers were the latest side to be linked with Cooper, although he was quick to laugh off the reports, confirming that his future lies in South Bermondsey.

“I haven’t even seen any reports yet! I don’t look at that at all.

“I know I’m under contract, so I’m just focusing on the season and doing my job for the team to do the best I can.

“I ignore all the outside talk because it’s normally rubbish.”

Despite this, he’s also aware that the club are actively looking to bring in more signings in the January transfer window, something which he sees as a crucial part in their bid to win promotion to the Premier League.

Millwall have already announced the signing of Aidomo Emakhu from Shamrock Rovers, and Cooper is keen to see more talented players join the club over the coming weeks.

“I think it’s exciting to see who the club want to bring in and how we can improve.

Obviously for the lads that aren’t involved as much and need more game time, it’s a great time for them to go and seek that.

“It gives us a bit of freshness and can kickstart our season in order to achieve what we want to achieve.”

In general, the defender’s performances have been incredibly consistent, whether that be as a centre-back in a back five or a left-back in Millwall’s new 4-2-3-1 formation. He’s always one of the first names on Gary Rowett’s team sheet because of how much he can offer at both ends of the pitch.

2022-23 has been slightly different, however. In an interview with the News in mid-October, he was incredibly critical of himself, explaining that his performances were far from the high standards he usually sets.

That frustration hasn’t vanished two months on despite an impressive run of games before the World Cup break at the start of November.

“I think, coming back from the break, we were hoping to be fresh and to kick on,” he recalled.

“Over the break, I was a little ill, which was frustrating because I’d normally use that time to get the hard work in and get ready to go again.

“I still think that I have a lot more to show and I feel like I haven’t been as consistent as I was last season.

“I’m looking to try and get back to that consistency.”

Wallace did, however, have to deal with a groin injury that he picked up in the Lions’ 2-1 win away at Bristol City on October 15th. There were significant concerns at the time, with Rowett saying: “Muzza almost never gets injured, so when it happens, you often fear that it’s a bad one”.

Thankfully, it wasn’t, and he returned to the starting lineup just four games later.

“I think the difficulty with injuries like that is that I want to get back out, to play and to help the team out,” he explained.

“Even when I did come back, the risk of reinjury was quite high and it was a bit of a gamble. That was obviously on my mind.

“When everything you’re doing feels good and you want to crack on, that’s fine.

With this injury, everything I was doing felt good and fine, it was just the last few stages where I had to really test it.

Nonetheless, it’s hard to look at Wallace’s Millwall career to date and not consider it a major success. As a result, it’s a big surprise to see that the 29-year-old has never been called up to the Scottish national team.

Nonetheless, he’s still determined to force his way into Steve Clarke’s plans ahead of their EURO 2024 qualifying campaign.

“It’s still a massive aspiration for me,” he admitted.

“It’s one of the things I’ve aimed for throughout my career, to represent my country is one of the highest honours.

Manager Gary Rowett has said that other youngsters will follow in their footsteps next month as they look to gain experience of senior football before returning to The Den next summer.

“Each player will have a mixed plan of what we would like them to do,” he told the News.

“I think some clearly need to get out and play men’s football, others will benefit from staying in our system and continuing to work.

“There’s a mixed view on all of those players and each individual will have their plan of what we ideally would like to happen.”

Rowett has previously said that striker Isaac Olaofe will look to leave on loan next month after a move to a League One club fell through on deadline day over the summer. The

23-year-old has had three successful spells at Sutton United and one at St. Johnstone, but he has so far failed to break into Millwall’s first-team squad.

Meanwhile, goalkeepers Ryan Sandford and Joe Wright have both returned to South Bermondsey after their respective spells at Maidstone United and Bath City were cut short through shoulder injuries.

Sandford will likely be sidelined for four to five months according to Stones boss Hakan Hayrettin, while Joe Wright is back in training with the Lions ahead of another loan move elsewhere next month.

“They’ve both ended up with shoulder injuries at different sorts of severities. They’re both rehabbing as we speak and hopefully, when they’re back fit, we’ll be able to get them back out playing a little bit more football.

“They’ve both done well out on loan and shown that they’re good young ‘keepers with a lot of potential.”

a good standard to choose from in the Scotland squad. There’s a lot of good players, definitely at left-back, which seems to be the strongest position.

“At centre-back, there’s a lot of players to choose from playing in the Championship, so it is a competitive squad.

“If I’m playing well and Millwall are doing well, it’d be nice to eventually break into that Scotland squad.”

The Lions are determined to add one or two new faces into their squad next month, with the signing of 19-yearold forward Aidomo Emakhu from Shamrock Rovers set to be announced when the window opens in around two weeks’ time.

However, Rowett has claimed that his side are no closer to completing any more deals, explaining that recruitment meetings are still ongoing as to who they want to bring to The Den in January.

Reports have linked Millwall with another bid for Hibernian centre-back Ryan Porteous, who is set to leave Easter Road after rejecting a new deal, while supporters are keen for the Lions to bring in a striker and a winger to improve their depth in the final third.

“I think the recruitment team do their diligence and their work, and we start to look at players,” he told the News.

“We contact players’ agents and speak

to players’ clubs, although that’s not something I worry too much about.

Obviously Alex [Aldridge] will do the main bulk of that.

“For us, it’s really about identifying what we need and about the club trying to find the relevant positions and the relevant players really”.

Similarly, Rowett refused to confirm or deny whether rival other clubs have enquired about any of Millwall’s players, although he said that it was “a little bit early” for contact to be made surrounding potential deals.

“I’m not going to sit here and rattle off who has rung up and who hasn’t, those things are private.

“I think it’s a little bit early for teams to ring up to try and do deals for players.

It’s one where the agents get busy in the background, then come January you usually have an idea of who you might be able to get and who you might not be able to get.

“There’s no one rule, there’s no one thing. Obviously, normally things only appear in January, but there’s also a bit of prep work done before that.”

Singh Johal, who wears a traditional Sikh head covering called a patka, became the first Sikh-Punjabi firstteam coach to be involved in a secondtier football match.

As a result, the Lions’ Equality Steering Committee chair Jason Vincent left a note in the away dressing room ahead of the game to welcome him to SE16 and congratulate him for his trailblazing achievement.

“I’m sure it is a privilege for you to not only be part of Kolo Toure’s backroom team, but to also be able to represent South Asians in football at such a level as The Championship,” the letter read.

It comes just weeks after the Latics appointed former Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool defender Kolo Touré as their new boss, making him the first African manager in English football.

Gary Rowett told the News that he was delighted to see more diversity in the EFL, adding that he expects this to become the norm over the coming years “It’s great to see,” the Millwall manager said.

“Obviously I spoke to Kolo directly before the game and after the game.

I just thought he was such a warm character, he seems like a really, really nice guy, full of experience, full of desperation to do well.

“It’s fantastic.

“I think the game has become more and more inclusive over the years, which can only be a positive thing for our Lions community.”
