Constituency boundary reshuffle could ‘wipe Walworth and Camberwell RIGHT Off the map’

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Camberwell and Walworth residents say a possible rejig of London’s constituency boundaries will wipe their historic areas from the map.

The Boundary Commission’s 2023 review has proposed splitting Camberwell across three different constituencies and creating a new ‘Peckham’ constituency without Camberwell in its name.

Walworth would be divided in half, with Newington going to Vauxhall and North Walworth and Faraday going to Peckham.

Local organisations and residents have reacted angrily, with some fearing their areas will be ‘eradicated’ under the proposals.

Jordana Leighton, former Camberwell Business Marketeer who helped lead the high street recovery fund, said: “Our biggest concern is that Camberwell is at a disadvantage at the best of times because it straddles Lambeth and Southwark.

We’ve never been classed a as major town centre making it harder for us to get awarded funding.

“This new proposal completely eradicates Camberwell from the agenda.

Under the proposals, Camberwell Green would move to a reconstituted ‘Vauxhall’ constituency, Champion Hill to Dulwich and West Norwood, with St Giles going to the ‘Peckham’ Constituency.

Independent of government, the Commission is responsible for reviewing parliamentary constituency boundaries across England.

All constituencies must have between 69,724 and 77,062 electors so, as populations change, boundaries must be periodically reshaped.

London Overground train drivers have suspended strike action planned for this Saturday, November 26, after union members received a pay offer.

The Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) union said the decision followed a pay offer made to its members by the company, which will now be put to a vote.

The strike, which could still go ahead,

would affect services throughout London’s overground system.

Mick Whelan, ASLEF general secretary, said: “Members at London Overground will now have the opportunity to consider and vote on whether to accept the offer. This isn’t a top-down process. Our members - the people who kept the country moving, driving trains through the pandemic - make the decision.”

Drivers working for eleven other train operators across Britain still plan to walk out over ongoing pay disputes, on Saturday November 26, according to the union.

Miatta Fahnbulleh, the new Labour candidate for Camberwell and Peckham, said “an arbitrary boundary through a community is the wrong call”.

Proposed boundary changes have raised eyebrows elsewhere in Southwark, especially Walworth. There are fears that, given Walworth’s ongoing regeneration, which has been criticised by some, residents would suffer by having multiple

MPs responsible for the area.

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, told the News: “The review ignores communities with Walworth getting split up sadly, despite all the change in the area and the need for a consistent voice.”

He also said the new Bermondsey and Old Southwark consituency, which would gain St George’s Ward, should have ‘Rotherhithe’ in its name “as it is also a distinct community deserving recognition”.

A Boundary Commission spokesperson said: “While the Commission must keep within the permitted electorate range when developing proposals for new constituency boundaries, we also take into account local geography, existing boundaries, and local ties - which is why the valuable feedback submitted by the public on our suggestions is so important.

We now believe we are close to the best map of constituencies that can be achieved under the rules we are working to, and have asked members of the public to have a final say on our new proposals by 5 December.”

People have until December 5 to send comments to the Boundary Commission.

100-year-old Bermondsey woman dances for joy after getting letter from King Charles III

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey woman who recently turned 100 was jumping for joy when she got her letter from the King - making her one of the first in the UK to receive one.

But it hasn’t been plain sailing for Bridie Collins, who has survived a burning building, double pneumonia, and narrowly escaped the clutches of a notorious serial killer.

She celebrated her birthday on September 13 and received the signed card two weeks later, reading: “My wife and I are so pleased to know that you celebrated your one hundredth birthday on September 13, 2022.

“This brings our warmest congratulations and heartfelt good wishes on such a special occasion.”

Bridie, who now lives on Emba Street, said: “I wanted to be the first one to get one from Charles but one morning, when I put the telly on, I saw somebody had got there first!

“I was always looking forward to it but I would have preferred it from the Queen!

But Charles is lovely. I think he’ll do well even though they used to say things about him years ago - saying he wasn’t fit for it or was stupid or something.

“Maybe the Queen would have given up sooner if she thought he was fit for the job

but he’s got a good woman beside him!”

Bridie was born and raised in Ireland, first in County Louth and then County Meath. As a child, she and her siblings couldn’t afford shoes and wore clothes fashioned from sacks.

Her mother died from blood poisoning when she was still young leaving her father, a farm worker, to support the family, despite not even earning a wage.

Rather than being paid, he worked for a landowner in exchange for accommodation in a tiny two-bedroom cottage, shared by the entire family.

As a child, Bridie survived a bout of double pneumonia. She also narrowly escaped a premature end when, as a baby, their cottage burned down, and she was saved by her four-year-old brother.

Bridie moved to London after World War Two and worked as a chambermaid but admits she “didn’t think much of London”, partly because of the ‘no dogs, no blacks, no Irish’ signs.

In her twenties, while searching for a room with her boyfriend, a lift-boy she’d met at work, she was offered a place by notorious serial killer John Christie.

The twisted murderer, who strangled at least eight people to death at his flat in Notting Hill, offered board to Bridie, who thankfully turned him down.

The sprightly great-grandmother, who still enjoys a walk, and even an Irish jig, received 2,000 euros birthday gift from the Irish government. She plans to spend it on a trip to Australia to see her son, Max.

Bermondsey Radio Station founder writes book to thank pandemic heroes who saved him

A Bermondsey DJ who set up a pandemic radio station during lockdown has written a book about a lifetime spent spinning records for the community.

Noel Smyth, 62, established Bermondsey Radio Station when lockdown struck in March 2020, entertaining up to 3,000 listeners daily with tunes and laughter.

The local figure, whose career has seen him organise boat parties for MPs, and play at “just about every pub in Bermondsey”, has written ‘Noel Bermondsey’s Number One DJ’ as a thank you to the community.

Noel, who grew up on the Dickens Estate, said: “I was helping the community and the community was helping me. Their donations kept the radio going, and I helped them through music and the funny times of the radio station to cheer them up.”

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Noel lost his job as a stationery delivery man in the City and was forced to use the Love North Southwark Food Pantry on Slippers Place.

“It was a situation where you had to do something or you would be finished.

So the idea of starting a radio was natural to me having previously worked on the Guy’s Hospital radio. Once we

were on air, and had cracked it, I was broadcasting every day for 10 hours, all 365 days of the year!”

At its height, Noel entertained 3,000 listeners daily. But amidst the daily toll of the pandemic, there was a sadder side, which saw him hold virtual wakes for listeners unable to attend in-person funerals Thanks to the hard work of volunteers, and donations made to the radio station, Noel was able to support himself, paying bills he wouldn’t have otherwise been able to afford.

The book is an ode to Bermondsey, featuring funny stories from well-known characters including local landlords who Noel says many will be familiar with.

“There’s sadness, funniness, and a little bit of sexiness - something for everyone,” says Noel.

He is urging people to donate to Love North Southwark’s ‘Toy Drive’, a scheme that will deliver toys to children whose families are struggling over Christmas.

bermondsey’s Maydew House set for demolition

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey’s Maydew House will be put forward for demolition, after years of disruption to ejected residents and thousands of pounds spent on maintaining the empty block.

In 2015, residents were forced to leave the 26-storey Abbeyfield Estate block under the proviso that asbestos would be removed, flats refurbished, and ejected families moved back in.

But at a meeting on November 9, a council officer reportedly told Abbeyfield residents that Southwark Council will be given a recommendation to demolish the 144-flat Bermondsey building.

After enquiries from the News the Leader of Southwark Council Kieron Williams admitted that demolition will now be an option after dramatic increases in construction costs, major changes to fire safety regulations and the economic crisis have meant it could be too expensive refurbish.

Abbeyfield residents, who have been living on a “building site” for nearly a decade, are questioning why this recommendation has only just been made.

Southwark Liberal Democrats have meanwhile accused the council of “mismanagement” and wasting taxpayers’ money, with £111,000 already spent on security to guard the empty block.

Cllr Emily Tester, Southwark Liberal Democrat member for the North Bermondsey ward, said: “In the middle of an extreme housing crisis in Southwark,

how can Labour spend hundreds of thousands of pounds of taxpayer money on a block that has been largely empty for seven years to then tell us they were wrong all along and Maydew House must come down?”

A recommendation will be put before cabinet in January. While voting councillors aren’t bound by officers’ recommendations, they tend to be heeded and accepted.

A former Maydew resident who wished to remain anonymous said: “It’s a shock to be honest considering how much money has been wasted to date. Residents were told they had the right to return to those homes. We were so happy living there for so many years... they disrupted people’s lives so our homes we loved and cared for could sit desolate for years at huge cost.”

In 2010, when the council was a Liberal Democrat - Conservative coalition, there were plans to sell Maydew House to private developers because refurbishment would be too costly. But when Labour took control of the council in 2012, they decided it would be best to keep the building as social housing and refurbish it.

The plan was then to build five floors on top of Maydew, containing 24 flats for private sale to subsidise the refurbishment of the block. But in July, those plans were thrown into disarray when the council paused all rooftop home builds, and now Maydew looks set to go altogether.

Cllr Emily Tester added: “We have over 17,000 households on the council homes waiting list. But, Labour’s mismanagement of a block they own shows they are failing in their attempts to cut those numbers down.

“We have residents living next to what

has essentially been, and will continue to be, a building site for nearly a decade. And now we find out that in that time Labour simply sat on their hands when we have asked them to make Maydew House inhabitable again.”

The leader of Southwark Council Kieron Williams told the News: “The future of the Abbeyfield estate is a crucial part of the Council Delivery Plan and we are committed to working closely with residents to find a future path that delivers improvements to their estate.

“Our previously published plans included the refurbishment and replacement of the homes in Maydew House. Like all major schemes in London, these plans have been hit by a perfect storm of dramatic increases in construction costs, major new regulatory standards in relation to fire safety and the national inflationary crisis. These combined factors have meant that we needed to go back to residents to look at other options for their estate.

“We have already begun engaging residents directly. The Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness and the Strategic Director of Housing and Modernisation met with residents of neighbouring blocks on November 9th to set out that we will continue to consult and engage them at every stage of this process going forward.

“At that meeting Cllr Merrill explained that we are looking to bring a report to Cabinet in January 2023 on the future of Maydew House. Demolition will be an option included in that report, but as yet no final decision has been taken. The report will also outline our continued approach to the full consultation with residents on the estate about the future of their estate.”

Massive funeral held for ‘The Old King’ - who has 133 direct descendants

By Isabel Ramirez isabel@southwarknews.co.uk An Irish-traveller known locally as ‘The Old King’ had a ‘royal-themed’ funeral to mark his passing after living in the borough for 36 years.

Michael O’Brien, nicknamed “The Old King” - was a proud Irish-traveller who moved here with his wife in 1986. “He lived mostly at a caravan park on Glengall Road in Peckham,” said Michael’s daughter, Ann-Marie O’Brien. “He was a big name in the area.

Everyone knew him as ‘The Old King’.”

Michael sadly passed on November 3rd after a battle with cancer aged 79.

He had a big family: the total number of his own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren adding up to 133.

On Tuesday 22nd November, he was laid to rest alongside his wife and son at the family burial ground at Camberwell Old Cemetery.

“He always loved Southwark. He wanted to be treated locally at King’s.

Our family are so grateful to them and the community nurses for giving him

such high-quality care.”

Michael was very fond of horses, and they led the procession of his coffin through the streets, from the church in Rotherhithe, past his former home in Peckham and on to the cemetery.

In 1997, the O’Brien family made headlines in the News when Mrs Veronica O’Brien (Ann-Marie’s mother) passed and had a funeral that stopped traffic.

Michael’s funeral was another big affair: hundreds of people went to pay their respects, along with a trail of RollsRoyces and even a Shetland pony.

“The funeral had a royalty theme because of his large family and following,” Ann-Marie added.

The funeral took place at the St Peter & the Guardian Angels R C Church in Rotherhithe.

Kennington community centre needs £47,000 to save basketball court

By Isabel Ramirez isabel@southwarknews.co.uk A Kennington-based community centre that welcomes thousands of players a year is calling on locals to help raise £47,000 to repair their damaged basketball court.

The Black Prince Trust, a community centre in Kennington, is raising money to fix their basketball court - which is ‘damaged beyond repair.’

The Regal court welcomes more than 15,000 attendees a year for their community basketball programmes. Over time, the court’s floor has declined, leaving the Trust facing the possibility of having to close it due to health and safety concerns.

They are calling on locals, businesses and sponsors to help repair the Regal court which has a broken sprung floor.

The Trust needs £47,000 to replace their damaged floor with a new concrete and

foam-based court.

A spokesperson from the Trust said: “Closing would be a huge loss for people in our local community. It would also cause a significant loss of revenue that we get through outside bookings of the court.”

With about 150,000 people attending the site per year, the Black Prince Trust helps deliver free activities to children and adults within an area of London with significant socio-economic deprivation.

Their programmes cater to a wide range of the community, including opportunities for children, adults, over 55s, as well as specialist provision for Muslim women and adults with physical and learning disabilities.

The Crowdfunder page has raised just over £20,000 so far - but they will need more than double to have any chance of fixing the issue permanently.

Police re-appeal as Distraction burglars continue to target residents

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Distraction burglars posing as council workers are still terrorising Southwark as police continue appealing for witnesses.

Last week, the News reported how the gang of thieves had hit homes in Camberwell, Rotherhithe and elsewhere, making off with valuable jewellery and traumatising elderly residents.

The men, whom police say have English or Irish accents, operate in groups of three or four, but only one will usually knock on the door.

A week on, police are still appealing for information and witnesses. Detective Sergeant Will Wigzell, from the Met’s Central South Command Burglary Unit has urged the public “to be particularly vigilant when allowing workmen or those posing as council workers into their home”.

The cowardly criminals struck again last

week, targeting an address in Kennington, it is understood.

Their reign of terror looks set to hit the national press, with ITV reportedly preparing a news segment on the spate of stealing, following our reports.

DS Wigzell said: “We are releasing images and footage of two men we would like to speak to in connection with the incidents.

A mother of three is homeless and sofa-surfing with her three children after Southwark Council moved her into a ‘structurally unsound’ home.

And to make things worse, Southwark Dog Wardens found her missing dog Nigel, but have now rehoused him, causing her children massive heartache.

Terri Wiltshire, 44, moved into her Alma Grove Estate home, expecting it to be “home for life” for her young family. Instead, she found a property with no radiators or warm running water, a decrepit kitchen and a collapsing kitchen ceiling.

Terri has spent the last two months shuffling her three children, aged sixteen, twelve and five, between friends’ and families’ houses, while waiting for repairs to be done.

Terri said: “It’s been awful. We haven’t got anywhere to live and it’s been so stressful for the kids whose school-life is suffering.

“I’m obviously upset and emotional. My grandad recently passed, and my nan, and my daughter’s nan and I don’t what else they can throw at us.”

Before moving in, Terri says she was assured the property had been inspected and signed off as habitable by the council.But when she moved in June, she was stunned when her foot went through her sixteenyear-old son’s bedroom floor.

Contractors were called and it emerged that the building, with its crumbling floorboards, broken electrics, and nonexistent heating, was not only uninhabitable but structurally unsound.

Where her garden should be, the previous tenant has constructed three giant sheds stacked with rubbish like mannequins and rotting furniture, which she’s been paying to remove herself.

She says Southwark Council have offered her temporary accommodation in Guilfdord which she had to turn down because her family can’t afford the 53km commute.

They also offered her a Peckham Rye flat which “smelt of cat wee” and shared its bathroom and kitchen with unknown tenants in an attached property - which Terri says is unsafe for her young children.

Terri’s son’s 16-year-old Pomeranian pooch Nigel was confused by the constant moving, and went missing and was

eventually found “halfway down the Rotherhithe tunnel”, according to Terri.

But while staying at a friend’s home Terri broke her ribs and, when paramedics arrived, anxious Nigel bolted outside again.

Southwark Dog Wardens found him and told Terri she needed to pay a “massive” £200 in kennel fees. But Terri couldn’t afford the fees and tragically, Nigel has now been rehoused with new owners.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle, who is fighting for the dog’s return, had asked Southwark Council to waive the £200 fee. He said: “The council’s policy needs to take into account whether everyone can afford massive kennelling during a time of economic crisis.”

The reason Terri couldn’t afford the £200 fee was because she is in rent arrears. This is because Southwark Council mistakenly told Universal Credit she lives in a four-bed rather than a three-bed.

With the confusion ongoing, she is only receiving universal credit for her old rental costs, significantly lower than that at Alma Grove.

So now she is in almost £2,000 debt and is worried she is going to be evicted from a property that, perversely, she can’t live in.

Contractors are now in the property doing repairs, which won’t be complete for weeks.

Terri says a council officer has said she can move back into the property.

“How am I meant to look after my family

in a house with no lights, kitchen, and just a couple of portable rings to cook food on?” says Terri. southwark housing boss Cllr Darren Merrill told the News: “In the current housing crisis, temporary accommodation within the borough is incredibly scarce. We hope that Ms Wiltshire will be able to move into her permanent home very soon. We can discuss her universal credit with her further to make sure the details are correct. The property does require some major works, which she needs to move out for, so we can turn the property a great, permanent home for her family.

“We will stay in touch with her to make sure all is resolved as soon as possible.”

FREE Christmas event in Council leader slams Autumn budget, Elephant this weekend, with saying taxpayers are having to foot bill carols, Santa and lights!

Council taxpayers will be forced to pay the price of “Tory failure” according to Southwark Council leader Kieron Williams, who has slammed the government’s Autumn budget.

Head to Elephant and Castle this Saturday for their Christmas lightsswitch on, with carols, bauble decorating and a chance to see Santa.

Castle Square in Elephant and Castle is hosting a series of free festive activities on Saturday November 26th.

They will be switching on their Christmas lights, and putting on an afternoon filled with music, carols, food, workshops and more.

Guests will be able to visit Santa’s Grotto where they’ll see Santa and his elf, and there will be a special post box for kids to send their Christmas lists to the North Pole.

Throughout the day, Castle Square will be hosting a series of Christmas workshops, which are free for anyone to join - including Christmas card making and bauble decorating.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Southwark will be there to switch on the Giant Christmas Tree and Castle Square Lights from 5:15pm.

Before the Christmas tree lights are turned on, Elephant and Castle Community Hub Choir will be leading carol-singing, for guests to join in.

This Friday, November 25th, all the retail traders in Castle Square will be

London councils face an estimated £700 million funding shortfall and to plug the gap, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt will allow local councils to accelerate council tax rises.

Southwark Council can now increase council tax five per cent annually, up from three per cent, but Cllr Williams says it’s unfair on council tax payers.

“Last week’s announcements set out a bleak picture of Tory failure. Under their watch, we are seeing the biggest fall in living standards since records began, and yet more cuts to vital public services,” he said.

He went on to accuse the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government of shirking its responsibilities and “leaving council taxpayers to pick up the bill”.

London Councils, a cross-party organisation representing the capital’s local authorities, said council tax rises are “not the answer to inadequate funding”.

Group chair Cllr Georgia Gould said: “Council tax rises during a cost-ofliving crisis are extremely difficult

for the struggling households we’re determined to support. But even if council tax goes up, it could never plug that £700m funding gap.

“Council tax is not the answer to the inadequate funding we’re grappling with.”

London Councils said that if boroughs were to try generating the £700 million from London’s council taxpayers, council tax bills would need to rise by around 18 per cent.

The Autumn budget also delays the implementation of adult social care funding reforms by two years until October 2025.

Cllr Williams said the government

had “reneged on their promise on social care” and “washed their hands of that responsibility”.

The government also announced that the cap on household energy bills would rise to £3,000 from April 2023, up from the current £2,500.

Southwark Council recently announced a series of cost-of-living support schemes, including the ‘Southwark Energy Savers Service’, which advises people who are struggling with energy bills, It also announced phase two of its Cost of Living Fund, worth £2.7 million, targeting vulnerable residents missing out on government support.

By Isabel Ramirez isabel@southwarknews.co.uk A vaccine trialled at King’s College Hospital could prolong the lives of cancer patients living with aggressive brain tumours.

Glioblastoma is the most aggressive form of brain tumour in adults with people, on average, living just 12-18 months after diagnosis. But now thanks to the DCVax-®L vaccine - patients with the disease could live longer.

King’s College Hospital took part in the global clinical trial, that tested a vaccine that uses patients’ immune cells to target the brain cancer - known as immunotherapy.

The final results of the trial show that the vaccine could extend patient survival by many months, or even years in some cases.

This is the first time in 27 years that any treatment has been shown to extend survival in recurrent glioblastoma.

Results showed that newly diagnosed patients who had the vaccine survived for 19.3 months on average, compared with 16.5 months for those who received a placebo.

Participants with recurrent glioblastoma who had the vaccine lived on average for 13.2 months after receiving it, compared with just 7.8 months for those who did not.

All of the participants in the trial had the standard treatment for glioblastoma - surgery followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Unlike chemotherapy and radiotherapy - the vast majority of patients reported no side-effects from the vaccine.

Professor Ashkan, Professor of Neurosurgery at King’s College Hospital, and European Chief Investigator of the clinical trial, said the recent results offer “hope” to patients.

“The vaccine was shown to prolong life,

“For example, we see clear benefits in the older patient groups as well as in those patients in whom radical surgery was not possible for technical or other reasons.

“Immunotherapy is a very promising approach for treating cancer, and the final results of this trial offer fresh hope to patients battling with glioblastoma.

“The next step will be to apply the same technology to develop treatments for other forms of brain tumours,” Professor Ashkan added.

The trial was completely blind, in that the patients and clinicians involved were not aware of which participants were being given the vaccine and which the placebo.

However, every patient whose tumour recurred during the trial was automatically offered DCVax-®L. This allowed DCVax-®L to be also investigated in cases of recurrent glioblastoma.

Nigel French, 53, was treated at King’s after being diagnosed with a glioblastoma in 2015. He was offered enrolment onto the DC Vax trial, to which he agreed. Seven years later, he is still in remission and is thankful to have had the opportunity to trial the vaccine.

Nigel said, “I’m very grateful to the team at King’s for offering me this lifeline. Although I can’t be certain as to whether I received DC Vax or the placebo, I believe the treatment I received, along with remaining positive, saved my life.”

BREAKING NEWS: Southwark’s buses saved from TfL cuts

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark’s buses have been saved after Mayor Sadiq Khan announced he was pulling back on controversial plans to axe bus routes across London.

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that only three bus routes across the capital will be scrapped, meaning Southwark’s 12, 45, 78 and N133 buses will be protected.

One change will mean the 521 route is serviced by the 133 and 59 routes, with the council vowing to ensure TfL helps people affected by these plans.

Cllr Catherine Rose, Cabinet Member for Parks, Streets and Cleaner Air, said: “It’s fantastic news that Southwark’s buses will be saved from cuts. They are essential to life in Southwark because we have no underground service to most parts of our borough, meaning that people need the buses.”

Earlier this month, she and council leader Kieron Williams urged Mayor

Khan to consider the vulnerable residents who rely on bus services.

Their pleas came after months of protests, which have seen councillors, unions and the public unite in vocal opposition to the cuts.

Cllr Rose said: “Buses are a lifeline for those with accessibility needs, and for those who simply have no other means of affordable transport, particularly in this current cost of living crisis. That’s why it is so important that the Mayor has listened to our campaign and has saved our bus services.”

The cuts were originally planned because TfL faced a funding shortfall after failing to secure enough money from the government. But Sadiq Khan said the consultation on the cuts, which received over 20,000 replies, showed “the strength of feeling across the capital”.

He added that cutting fewer services “will mean tough decisions elsewhere, but I am very pleased that the vast majority of bus routes proposed to be cut due to the government’s funding conditions can now be saved.

Big Zuu bigs up Peckham pantry Exclusive

Instead of doing their Christmas advert this year, Co-op has partnered with Your Local Pantry to focus on the effects of high costs on communities.

The Your Local Pantry Network currently has 83 food pantries in the UK, but the biggest by far is Peckham Pantry, on Peckham Park Road.

Temi Okudiya, the manager at the pantry, said: “No other pantry in the network is as big as us. They maybe have 40 to 100 members - we have over 4,000.”

Peckham Pantry is a project by Pecan, a charity that supports the most vulnerable in the community. Their other projects include their women’s services and employment support. “So we have other services we can direct people to if they’re struggling with something,” Temi explained.

Food pantries allow people to do a food shop for less. At Peckham Pantry you pay just £4.50 for more than £15 worth of shopping.

“We have a lot of customers that are now volunteers - we want them to have a say in how the pantry is run. We also go the extra mile to make the pantry inclusive and culturally diverse, so anyone with any dietary requirement can come and find something to eat.”

Ed Powell, mission manager for food at Co-op, said: “We chose to launch our nationwide campaign in Peckham because it’s a really good example of how a food pantry should be run. Local pantries offer dignity because you are contributing a small amount, so you feel part of it.”

On Wednesday, TV Chef Big Zuu came to Peckham to do a live cook-along in support of the campaign. “I got involved because I want to do what I can to help to counteract what’s going on at the moment, with the cost of living crisis.”

Zuu and fellow chef Miguel Barclay, author of One Pound Meals, were in Leyton Square, on Peckham Park Road, giving locals tips on how to make their food shop go further.

“Planning your shop is important - and using cheaper ingredients like rice as a substitute. You can reuse rice for lots of different meals as well For the cook-along I’ll be using ingredients you would find in your local pantry, like this one in Peckham.”

Zuu added.

But with rising costs affecting more people, the pantry’s member base is only getting bigger.

“On average, we see between 60 to 70 people every day, six days a week,” Temi explained. “So sometimes we struggle when we see these numbers coming in and we don’t have enough food.

“It’s not because we don’t want to serve them, but we rely heavily on donations. So we sometimes run out of stock.

Local people who aren’t members can play their part by donating food. “As long as it’s in date, edible and safe to eat - we’ll take it. We accept donations in any form just to meet the demand for food,” Temi added.

“I hope this event brings more awareness about Peckham Pantry, so people know it’s there if they need it.”

Miatta Fahnbulleh is set to be Labour candidate for Camberwell and Peckham Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Miatta Fahnbulleh has been named as the Labour candidate to challenge to replace Harriet Harman when she stands down in Camberwell & Peckham at the next election.

Local labour party members voted for the left-wing economist and former number 10 advisor at an event at Walworth Ark Academy on Saturday, November 19.

She ran on a manifesto of economic transformation, which included promises to campaign for a £15 minimum wage and the introduction of wholesale change to childcare provision.

Fresh from her victory, Fanhbulleh told the News: “I’m pretty overwhelmed.

It was a massive show of support. I’m

so proud and honoured to be selected - it’s an amazing community and the community I want to serve.”

Asked what Camberwell and Peckham could expect from her leadership, if she won the seat, she said: “I’m an economist. We need to change the economic system and that’s what I’ll spend the coming months striving to do for the people here.”

The decision concludes a controversial process that saw an entire selection committee dismissed over a row about who should be on the shortlist to replace Harman.

A selection committee member had leaked their chosen three candidates to the News - Miatta Fanhbulleh, Evelyn Akoto and Peter Babudu - only for the Labour hierarchy to dismiss the entire committee over the leak.

With the committee dissolved, Labour produced a new shortlist with Johnson Situ on the ballot, whom some claim was

Labour leader Keir Starmer’s preferred candidate.

Fahnbulleh said: “There is a big job uniting the local party which is really important.”

Incumbent MP Harriet Harman has served Camberwell and Peckham for forty years, making her the longestserving MP still in office.

She held cabinet positions in both Tony Blair’s and Gordon Brown’s government, and many consider her to have been a trailblazer for women’s rights.

However, when all the candidates to replace her pledged to set up a constituency office, somewhere where constituents can raise concerns with their MP in-person, some questioned why she didn’t already have one.

It is understood that she held a constituency office for a number of years after being elected, but doesn’t appear to have had one for some time.

Southwark Council and Lib Dems clash over affordable housing delivery

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council and the Liberal Democrats have clashed after local Lib Dem leader Victor Chamberlain claimed Labour’s affordable housing commitments were “hot air”.

Cllr Chamberlain made the comment after the publication of a report by the London Assembly which presents a mixed picture of Southwark’s housebuilding projects.

On the one hand, the report found that Southwark had begun building 2,090 affordable homes in 2021 - the most of any London borough.

But other parts were less positive, with one statistic showing Southwark had completed just 144 affordable homes in the last year.

However, the figures do not account for the loss of housing through demolitions of major estates like the Heygate and Aylesbury.

According to a 2021 report published

by Green Party politician Sian Berry, Southwark had already lost a net of 860 council homes, and stood to lose up to 2,577 in total once schemes with planning permission were completed.

Southwark Council is already one of the UK’s biggest social landlords and aims to build or purchase 11,000 new council homes by 2043.

Police appeal after Prince of Peckham pub worker was partially blinded in stabbing

A Prince of Peckham pub worker has lost sight in one eye after he was stabbed, and a 31-year-old woman charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH).

A teenager, aged seventeen, was rushed to hospital after being stabbed in Southampton Way, Peckham.

Police were called to the scene at around 9.50pm on Friday, November 18 and paramedics took him away for medical treatment. His condition has been assessed as non-life-threatening.

The A202 Peckham Road was reportedly closed in both directions at the junction with Southampton Way following the incident but has now reopened.

There were no arrests and police enquiries continue.

In June, a twenty-year-old man was left fighting for his life after a stabbing,

bosses’ commitments to building affordable homes are just hot air.

“Although the increase in affordable housing starts is encouraging, it means nothing until we start seeing a meaningful reduction to the 16,000 residents on the housing waiting list and bring empty homes back into use.”

But Southwark Council hit back, with a spokesperson telling the News that Southwark’s affordable housing delivery was “stand out” among London boroughs, and was better than that in Lib Dem boroughs.

They pointed out that the 2,090 affordable homes it began in 2021 were more than every Lib Dem borough in London - 84 combined across three local authorities.

Southwark also started 6,225 affordable homes from 2016/17 to 2021/22 – the fourth highest in London.

Cllr Darren Merrill, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, said: “The Greater London Authority

“There was a vicious crime which resulted in a serious injury to a man who was working at the pub. It is vital that anyone who saw the incident or the aftermath gets in touch to share what they know.”

t feels like each week we get another attempt at a Budget from the Government.

In the last three months we have had three Tory Prime Ministers and four Tory Chancellors.

Last week we got a Budget in which we all have to pay for the last Tory Budget which was so disastrous for the national economy. But Sunak’s Tories did not apologise for the higher prices, mortgages, inflation, and debt the country now faces after twelve toxic years of Tory failure, albeit five years propped up in a Lib Dem Coalition.

In Southwark, it is estimated that at least 8,000 mortgage holders will be paying hundreds of pounds more a month as a

direct consequence of the damage of the last Tory Budget. The country is teetering on deep recession after a decade of failure and a generation of lost opportunity with almost every public service now failing the people the Government is meant to serve.

Due to Tory failure, we are all paying more tax now than at any point since 1948. The highest tax in eight decades.

The difference is that in 1948 people knew they were paying the costs of World War II and to create, under the first ever majority Labour Government, the NHS, the welfare state and undertaking the largest ever programme of housebuilding.

But the Tories again damage our economy by failing to develop. Their hardline Brexit is still harming the UK, their catastrophic Truss Budget is still hitting taxpayers, and now further cuts but higher taxes will also cost us all long-term.

A towering saga of confusion, waste and delay

ermondsey’s Maydew House has long been a frustrating, 26-storey reminder of Southwark’s housing crisis. Many have asked how a 144-flat building could remain empty for almost a decade, while 17,000 people are on the housing waiting list.

For years, we have been told that Maydew would be refurbished, new flats added, and remain a vital source of social housing, just as it has done since it was built in the sixties. But this week, our exclusive story reveals it will now be put forward for demolition. Many will be dismayed by this news. There are the families who were ejected and promised a move back into their homes.

But there are also the residents of the Abbeyfield Estate, who have faced living on a construction site for the last few years.

But regardless of where in Southwark you live, it’s a story that should frustrate everyone. After all, taxpayers’ money has been poured into this project in recent years - and to what end?

Southwark Council has blamed a perfect storm of rising “construction costs, major new regulatory standards in relation to fire safety and the national inflationary crisis”. There is certainly truth in this. With inflation at a 40-year-high, construction firms have found clients delaying jobs, forcing them to stop buying materials and hiring staff. In August, Gareth Belsham, a director of the national property consultancy Naismiths, said: “As the recessionary vice begins to close on the UK economy as a whole, the construction industry’s brakes are being squeezed harder and faster than most.”

But this is only part of the story. The reality is, the Maydew House redevelopment saga has been characterised by confusion and flip-flopping from the outset. Why did it take two sets of works to remove the asbestos, why were they four years apart, and why did costs go up fourfold from the original estimate to the final bill? Why do residents say communication has been poor, leaving them confused at every juncture in the development?

There is also the important point that Maydew House was meant to get rooftop homes, many to be sold off privately, to fund the refurbishment. In July, the council, in the face of huge public opposition, paused its rooftop scheme. Surely this is a factor.

These are questions this paper will continue to pursue in the coming weeks. If the demolition does go ahead, Southwark will have to explain how it will make up for the shortfall in social housing created by this demolition. Whichever way you look at it, it’s another dent in the borough’s house-building ambitions.

‘Not too far now!’ The rallying cry of every parent or carer who finds themselves trying to persuade their charges that a trip to London Bridge’s Unicorn Theatre via scooter along Jamaica Road on a wild and windy autumn school night is a really good idea, writes Ed, Frida and Woody Gray...

Truth is relative anyway, I tell myself, especially in a post-truth world.

Eventually, we are bathed in Unicorn light and we take our seats for Justin Audibert’s stylish Christmas production of Pinocchio.

The house lights go up and we find the wood-turned boy in Geppetto’s beautifully recreated workshop about to undergo the quest for truth that will turn him to flesh.

Susan Harrison’s Marmalade The Cat delights the local school children in the audience with whiskery feline affection as we learn that poor Geppetto, played with pathos by Tom Kanji, is a man yearning to become a father. His dream soon comes true with a wish, a blue moon and Eleanor Wyld’s sassy American Blue Fairy as Peyvand Sadeghian’s Pinocchio springs jerkily to life, all heart and exuberance.

Tenderly, Geppetto begins to wrap the world in invented truths to protect his boy from harm. Of course, the deeper Pinocchio enters deceit, the longer grows his nose and Geppetto’s faux truths quickly unravel. The second half is a delight and the stunning simplicity of the menacing Dogfish, brilliantly lit by Ric Mountjoy, has the theatre screaming with joy. The production shifts the scale of the action with style and clarity as we end up inside the belly of the beast for the finale.

Jean Chan’s colourful stage design nods to Carlo Collodi’s 1883 novel, created when Italian rural workers were migrating to cities, innocent of city life and ripe for exploitation. The tale of the wooden boy is a warning to be wary of those that seek to use us for their own ends, like Momo and the hilariously costumed Duchess, in cahoots with Fratello. The switching roles of this ensemble cast underscore the message that we are all duplicitous at times and invention and role play are survival skills.

Our young reviewers scooted home delighted and felt this production to be the perfect end to anti-bullying week. ‘If only our own leaders had noses that grew when they lied!’ They chorused. Maybe they don’t need to if the lie is big enough, we reasoned. Mr. Collodi would have been proud.

Playhouse stages new writer’s work Papatango Theatre Company has been promoting new writing for over 10 years now, writes Christopher Peacock...

Their Papatango New Writing Prize gives applicants the chance to get personal feedback on their work but ultimately one winning play will be commissioned for a full-scale production.

2022’s winner of the prize, Clive Judd, now has his play ‘Here’ realised in a threeweek run at the Southwark Playhouse.

Here is a kitchen sink family drama set in the West Midlands. The action is triggered with the arrival of Matt, a 25-year-old lad returning to the family home of his mother. Still residing there is his cousin Jess, Aunt Monica and her partner Jeff.

What we see unravel is the tensions that remain in this unconventional household. They are all slightly haunted by past traumas and secrets left in their collective pasts. At the end of the first act, we find that Matt is into recording

ambient noise in the hopes of connecting with the supernatural and he has come back with hopes that answers from the beyond will be found in the ether.

The turn from a pedestrian kitchen sink drama to semi-sci-fi is eventually realised but not before many narrative questions are opened and left unfulfilled. Judd’s writing commits to the realistic style of interrupting conversation that you hear in most domestic settings but also has a penchant for a Pinteresque pause.

The four-hander does give room in its runtime for some character depth and substance: Lucy Benjamin really leans into the borderline alcoholic Aunt Monica role with joy, and Mark Frost tries to extract an emotionally adept performance from quite a limited role as Jeff. However, Sam Baker-Jones in his professional debut gets the pick of the performances with his slightly abstracted naïve Matt.

Beyond the limits of the unfulfilling narrative at play here, are questions

about the staging. George Turvey’s direction and Jasmine Swann’s set certainly do not aid the material. A full kitchen complete with sideboards is placed behind transparent screens on three sides that hinder some audience views, with the action either obstructed by set or from the static inactive blocking of the cast.

At times Here looks to explore a plethora of subjects from faith, belief, LGBTQ+ prejudice and mental health, but never commits. It takes its time to get moving down the route of the paranormal and is slow to arrive. It is a journey that is at times humorous but lightweight on the drama, with little tension ever being roused.

Lynn ‘shocked’ with decision

Riakporhe’s Coach: ‘There was no way he lost that fight 2023 plans take shape

THERE WERE mixed feelings for Lynn ABC coach Terry Pearson last weekend as he was pleased with his fighters’ performances in the Senior Novice Championships but felt “complete shock” that one decision went against them.

Lynn started their season this month and had Richard Faebo and Lanre Barkkare in action in Class A under81kg and under-71kg categories, respectively.

Faebo fought in a pre-quarter-final and went through, though not as comfortably as Pearson had expected based on his performance. Pearson said: “He boxed well and to instruction and came out the winner by majority decision which did surprise me as I thought he would have got it unanimous.”

Barkkare was next in the ring.

“We were looking for an Improved performance from Lanre after he got a loss [the previous] weekend on the Swanley show, and that is exactly what we got,” Pearson said. “He boxed so much better and his defence was so much better than it was the previous week. Unfortunately he didn’t get the win as he lost on a majority decision.

“Richard then boxed again in the last bout of the day and probably put in his best boxing performance he has since he started boxing last season. He controlled the bout from the centre of the ring and also controlled the pace of the fight. He was hitting his opponent to body and head regularly and outscoring him in every round, only for the judges to give it the other way and make his opponent a unanimous winner.

“My fellow coaches and I were in complete shock. There was no way he lost that fight. I let the officials know of my feelings and left the venue. I feel so gutted for Richard who has put so much hard work in and he deserved to join his club-mates in the semi-finals.”

Frankie Hannratty and Cyrus Donaldson both received byes to that round.

Lionesses’ good bye may mean repeat of epic

This could mean a repeat of the recent epic match in the first round of the FA Cup with National League side Gillingham, who are also through to the semi -finals together with Dartford and Aylesford. The Gills defeated the Lionesses 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw earlier this

month.

Meanwhile, the Lionesses’ successful under-18 side under manager Ted Jones contested a Capital Cup tie away to Tower Hamlets Women’s first team last weekend, and they duly emerged with an impressive 5-2 win with Gemma Bryan (2), Anya Carroll (2) and Quiana Dillon-Bent on target.

The Lionesses’ first team return to London and South East Women’s Regional Football League action with a vital promotion clash against Fulham at St Paul’s in Rotherhithe this Sunday. Kick-off is at 3pm.

Luke’s good as Fish net late win

After a goalless first half, the Fish were reduced to ten men when Manny Shoderu was harshly sent off for what looked like a fair tackle.

Undeterred, Ajay Ashanike’s side took the lead an hour in when Billy Brown raced down the right and crossed for Luke With to finish.

Fisher have been beset by injury problems this season and there were two more here as Darnelle Baily-King and substitute Henry Adeniran were forced off, the latter

just five minutes after coming on.

The returning Isaac Thompson had replaced Adeniran but Fisher were waiting to bring on a substitute for Bailey-King when the visitors took advantage of the stretched nine-man hosts and Luke Medley levelled.

MILLWALL LIONESSES went straight through to the Kent County Cup semi-final when their opponents Maidstone United had to withdraw last weekend.

Walworth’s Riakporhe, 32, has moved into world title contention after his technical knockout of Fabio Turchi in the second round of their fight at Wembley Arena in June took his professional record to an unblemished 15-0.

But there is also the possibility of another bout against Surrey’s Chris Billam-Smith, whom Riakporhe defeated on a split decision in 2019.

Billiam-Smith faces Armend Xhoxhaj in Bournemouth on December 17.

“I think both fighters are up for it,” Ben Shalom of the promoter BOXXER said. “Billam-Smith wants to fight for a world title as does Richard next year.

We do expect them both to fight for world titles in the early part of next year. But that’s a fight I think the fans would look forward to.

“They’ve both developed as fighters now. Richard Riakporhe is a different fighter to the one that fought Chris Billam-Smith and Chris would say that he’s improved as well. But I think because of Richard’s power people would like to see him in 50-50 fights because it is exciting when you’ve got a guy, almost like [Deontay] Wilder that can end fights whenever he wants.

“I think Billam-Smith against Riakporhe in Bournemouth would be a huge event and a huge occasion.

“That cruiserweight division is exciting because they all should now hopefully get to a stage where they are fighting each other, whether it’s Lawrence [Okolie], Richard, Chris, even [Jack] Massey.

“There are some big fights there and then there are some world titles available.”

It was a feisty affair at St Paul’s

Fisher, though, had the last word and it was Brown again who set up the goal. He tracked back to win possession before going on another run down the right and finding Thomas who finished to spark jubilation among most of the 174 in attendance.

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL DON’T often get to host a club of Brondby’s size at The Den, which makes Saturday’s friendly match even more exciting for the club’s supporters.

The Lions will make a quick return to action after a two-week break for the World Cup, having finished on a high with a 4-2 win against Preston North End on November 12th. The players were given a week off to recover and relax, with some going off on holiday for the first time since the summer.

They restarted training on Tuesday morning ahead of Saturday’s clash against Brondby, although all eyes are on their upcoming trip to the Stadium of Light to play Sunderland.

That doesn’t take anything away from the significance of this weekend’s friendly match, however, with the Drengene fra Vestegnen boasting eleven league titles, seven Danish Cups and multiple appearances in major European tournaments.

All isn’t well in the town of Brondbyvester, however, with the club sitting tenth out of twelve teams in the table after seventeen league games.

It prompted them to part ways with Niels Frederiksen shortly before the break, meaning that they will travel to South Bermondsey without a manager.

relish the test of facing yet another Scandinavian opponent on home soil after their penalty shootout defeat against Swedish outfit Hammarby IF. Manager Gary Rowett will obviously use the match as a chance to rebuild his squad’s fitness levels, although he

may be keen to give some gametime to some of his fringe players such as Isaac Olaofe and George Evans.

Furthermore, the likes of Ryan Leonard and Shaun Hutchinson [both hamstring] could be eased back into action after recovering from their

injuries, although Benik Afobe [knee] remains ruled out.

Rowett previously told the News that he was excited to host a “traditional and successful” club, adding that “it should be a really good test, a different type of test and a good experience”

The Lions only face one longdistance trip - away to Sunderland on December 3rd - while the rest of the month is made up of home games or local away matches.

After their pilgrimage to the Stadium of Light, Millwall will return

to The Den to host Wigan Athletic before making two short trips to Luton Town and Watford before and after Christmas respectively. They then end December back at SE16 with a visit from Bristol City shortly before New Year’s Eve. While his side will be clocking up considerably fewer miles than in previous months, Rowett doesn’t believe that the fixtures will be any easier, although he prefers to stay focused on the task at hand rather than judging how difficult the coming weeks will be.

“I wouldn’t say three away games out of five feels like a nice month,

I certainly wouldn’t put it in that category,” he told the News.

“It’s just a normal Championship month, the only thing you haven’t got is any midweek games. That can be good sometimes, but I actually like the midweek games. I think we get into a nice flow of games and you’re never too far from the next one.

“I’d never judge whether something is nice or not nice, we just crack on. We work on the principles of how we want to play and we want to try and improve some of those along the way, adding little bits to it.”

Honeyman hits his target EXCLUSIVE

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk IT’S FAIR to say that George Honeyman enjoyed his week off at the start of the World Cup break.

“Me and my girlfriend got a bit of sun in,” he admits, adding that he’s also made time to watch some of this year’s tournament in Qatar, including England’s 6-2 demolition of Iran on Monday evening. The midfielder believes that the Three Lions have what it takes to go deep into the tournament, although he pinpoints Brazil as the natural favourites.

However, it’s now time to get back to work, and the 28-year-old is fully focused on the task at hand. He says that Millwall’s first-team squad have hit the ground running and are ready to face his boyhood club, Sunderland, on December 3rd.

“Going off our training, the lads have been really, really good,” he told the News.

“Fitness levels should never dip too much after a week out, and we had a couple of runs that we did in our week off just to keep us ticking over.

“You never know, because this is totally unusual for this country, but I feel like we’re in a really good place as a squad and as a team.

“From the early signs in the first few days it’s been really good, so hopefully that continues.”

Manager Gary Rowett has used the World Cup break to assess Millwall’s start to the season, analysing how his side have performed in their first 20 games of the campaign.

When asked about his view, Honeyman sees the Lions performances in a positive light, albeit that he admits there are areas in which the team can still improve.

“I think there’s things that we’ve gotten better at,” he explains.

“After the first game of the season, we didn’t keep a clean sheet for a while, which is something that Millwall have traditionally been really good at in recent seasons, especially when I’ve played against them. I’ve always found

them really hard to break down.

“I feel like we’ve gotten back to that a little bit. As a team, we’ve defended really well, and I think the manager is a big pusher on that. If we’re solid and keep as many clean sheets as possible, we’ve got the quality at the top end of the pitch to win quite a few games.

“That’s been a really good second half of the first part of the season, and long may that continue.

“I think we’ll be right there at the end of the season if we keep continuing

that form.”Individually, it hasn’t been the easiest start for Honeyman. Despite playing well as Millwall’s no.10 in the early stages of the season, a straight red card against Cambridge United in the Carabao Cup undoubtedly brought him back down to earth. Furthermore, Zian Flemming’s return from injury has seen the former Hull City man drop to the bench in recent weeks, limiting him to cameo appearances.

The Lions boss had previously told the News that he would use the World Cup break to start planning out the club’s business, with a number of meetings scheduled to take place while the firstteam squad were given a week off after a strenuous start to the Championship

campaign.

While Rowett refused to specify a particular area of the pitch that would like to strengthen in, he did highlight the fact that any manager would be keen to add more goals to the team, adding to the speculation from supporters that Millwall are keen on recruiting a striker and a winger ahead of the second half of the season.

It remains to be seen what stage the club’s preparations for the transfer window are at, although when asked whether he was looking at preliminary ideas or finalised targets, Rowett told the News: “I think it’s a little bit of both.”

“We’ve certainly had a bit more time to look at some of the targets, we’ve had a little bit more time to sift through the players that have been recommended by our recruitment department.

“Again, everything is pretty fluid at this time of the season, but nevertheless we need to start breaking down those lists into more isolated targets. We’ve got those as well.

“It’s pretty positive. It’s nice to be able to do that without competitive games in the way, the preparation, it’s a bit more of a relaxed time where you can spend more time doing it.

“We’ve been pretty productive.”

Millwall boss hopes to keep star man despite expected interest

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT is adamant that Zian Flemming will remain a Millwall player after the January transfer window despite expected interest from higher-ranked clubs.

The Dutchman has already scored eight goals so far this season, a staggering achievement given that he missed the start of the campaign, and supporters are starting to take note of his impressive performances in the Championship.

With that comes a fear that Premier League outfits could be interested in signing Flemming this winter,

especially if a significant bid is submitted to the Lions in the coming weeks.

However, when asked whether he was concerned about the possibility of his star man leaving The Den in the coming months, Rowett told the News: “no, not at all”.

“Firstly, John [Berylson] is the owner and he can refuse whatever he wants to refuse,” he added.

“For us, Zian has done really, really well, but he’s only four or five months into Championship football. He’s got a long way to go to get to where he wants to be.

“Of course, he’s scored eight goals so far, so he’s always going to attract a bit of attention, just like we would if another player had scored eight goals

in the division below or whatever.

“Things like that don’t really concern me too much, it’s not something I have to necessarily worry about.

“I’d like to be in a position where we have a lot of interest in a lot of our players because it means they are playing well and performing well, and other sides are recognising that.”

Millwall do, however, have the high ground with any negotiations given that Flemming is currently on a long-term contract that should keep him in South Bermondsey for the foreseeable future.

This is significant for the Lions, especially given the way in which Jed Wallace departed the club at the end of last season on a free transfer.

Rowett is determined to keep the core of his squad together, but admits that work still needs to be done to achieve that.

“That’s the aim with any settled group, people who know they are here for a long time and can concentrate on their football without worrying about contract negotiations.

“I think that’s always your aim, and the majority of the squad are tied down for several years more.

Therefore, that’s not as much of an issue.

“It’s still something we look at all the time, it’s like anything, but it’s not really my remit necessarily so I haven’t got to spent too much time thinking about some of those issues.”

Many Championship squads have been given an extended break for the World Cup, but the Lions are already back to work as they prepare for their upcoming clash against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Before that, however, Gary Rowett’s side will take on the former Danish champions at The Den, with the Millwall boss telling the News that a second behind-closed-doors friendly match is also set to take place in the buildup to their trip to Wearside.

While some may see it as an overly demanding return to competitive action, Rowett is delighted by the response he has seen from his players and expects them to live up to the challenge that awaits them over the coming days.

“I think you normally get a couple of days where they need to get going again, but on Monday they started really, really well,” he explained.

“They’ve applied themselves excellently in training and you can see there’s a real confidence about the group, a real brightness, a little bit of everything.

“We finished with a good win away from home and they’ve then had seven or eight days off, so it’s quite a nice combination if you’re a footballer, you don’t get many chances to do either very often.

“The attitude has been excellent, we’ve been able to involve a couple of younger players as well.

“For us, it’s a period now of work.

We’re working back towards the Sunderland game and it’s been a good week so far.”
