Households fretting about energy bills and the rising cost of living will have the support of three newly announced schemes.

At a cost-of-living summit hosted by Southwark Council on Tuesday, November 8, Council Leader Kieron Williams announced the services.

The schemes are: Southwark Energy Savers: The council is funding a new Southwark Energy Savers Service. Delivered by Citizens Advice Southwark, this will provide energy advice to those in Southwark affected by rising energy bills and the cost of living crisis. The service will be available face-to-face, by phone and online to anyone who lives or works in Southwark.

Warm Spaces: Warm spaces are public places where people can go to keep warm, have a cup of tea and take part in an activity. The council is also working with the local voluntary and community

MP Neil Coyle has told Tory MPs to “go eat kangaroo testicles” after he accused them of “partying their way through lockdown” during Prime Minister’s Questions.

The representative for Bermondsey and Old Southwark was referring to former Health Secretary Matt Hancock starring in the reality TV show ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’.

The jibe was in reaction to groaning Tory MPs who were seemingly unhappy with his ‘Partygate’ allegations. Mr Coyle said: “Covid restrictions were a necessary if painful experience. Across the country, most people made enormous sacrifices… these people were betrayed by the Conservatives who partied their way through lockdown.”

Having drawn jeers from the opposition benches, he said: “You may not like it but you can all go to eat kangaroo testicles for all I care.”

Mr Coyle is currently suspended from the Labour Party pending allegations into alleged racist comments made to a journalist in a Commons bar. Last month, Mr Coyle told the News he expected the internal investigation to conclude this month and was “hoping for good news”.

The Southwark News is proud to be the only independent, paid for newspaper in London Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Bermondsey centenarian celebrates Southwark Council’s book delivery service

isabel@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham-based Morrisons employee who got a royal medal for her community work has now been recognised and commended by the King.

Rose Morgan, 58, grew up in Dulwich and has worked as community champion for Morrisons in Peckham since 2014.

Each UK store has a Community Champion and their work includes supporting local food banks, schools and the elderly and vulnerable in their areas.

Earlier this year, Rose was given a British Empire Medal for her idea to lift customers’ spirits during the pandemic.

“I had the idea to hand out millions of ‘seeds of hope’ - so I wrote to the CEO of Morrisons and he loved the idea.

The seeds represented giving customers something to grow as a sign of hope in an uncertain time.

“Last year we gave out sunflower seeds and it went down so well that they decided to do it again this year!”

This year they gave out cornflower seeds - “Apparently they were the Queen’s favourite flower, which makes what happened next even more special,” she added.

Rose explained that following the medal and attending the garden party at Buckingham Palace she was surprised

sheltered housing units as well.

Peckham’s Rose gets to meet our new King Charles

Edna Mulford, who used Rotherhithe library when she was more mobile, is one of 250 people who get books, cassettes and CDs delivered to their front door.

Edna said: “I’ve used the library for about 90 years! I used to read while I was having my breakfast and when I was working I used Holborn Library when I needed a book for my lunch hour. I always had a book.

“They come and deliver and you don’t have to worry about it. I just tell them I want an adventure or a good murder, but I don’t like romances at all!

“I’d rather have my book than have the telly on. I don’t know what I’d do without my books.”

Simon, from the council’s Home Library team, has been delivering books for more than twelve years. He said: “People do love their books. It’s generally people who’ve read at an earlier stage in their lives, who stick with the service.”

While some people prefer books and CDs, others use cassettes because the buttons on CD players can be difficult to use.

“It’s great to get out and visit all our regulars, but we spend a bit of time rewinding audio cassettes as well,” Simon added.

The predominantly older people who use the service value Simon and his team.

They’re on first-name terms with all their readers, as they usually stop for a short visit while dropping off and collecting books, once a month.

Edna said: “During the lockdown Simon used to call me first to make sure I was

with the chance to meet the new King.

“The company surprised me and four others from different parts of the UK. We went to the Bradford store where we met King Charles.

“You never think will happen to you!

“I didn’t expect this. I love my work.

What I do in the community – you just feel grateful to be able to play a part in some way.

“I’m not different from anyone else, I’m a normal woman. So it’s great for people to see that this can happen to normal people.”

She said meeting him was a ‘wonderful but surreal experience.’

“He looks just like the photos!” she said.

“And he was so polite and kind.

“He spoke about Peckham and asked about how people were doing in the area. He seemed genuinely interested.

“He commended us for the work we were doing.”

Rose said she has faith in him as a King after meeting him. “I think he’s going to do a good job as King because I think he cares about the people. You get that from meeting him.”

In terms of how to unite the community in the current climate, she added: “People can’t help the situations they’re in a lot of the time. They just need to know other people care.

“A little goes a long way in care. We have to respect each other.”

‘Lion of London Bridge’ - who fought off jihadis in Borough Market - publishes his own book Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Roy Larner, the man who fought off jihadis during the 2017 London Bridge terror attack, has written a book about his childhood, his heroics, and feeling “let down” by the authorities.

D u b b e d ‘The Lion of London B r i d g e ’, Roy, who lives in

Nunhead, famously shouted “f*ck you I’m Millwall” as he fended off the terrorists in Borough Market, giving people vital seconds to escape.

His new book, also entitled ‘The Lion of London Bridge’, details his Peckham childhood, his life-long love affair with Millwall FC, and the events surrounding the London Bridge Attack.

That night, on June 3, 2017, Roy single-

handedly fought his attackers, later found to have been juiced up on steroids, as they slashed his arms and neck.

It is widely accepted that his heroics in the Black the Blue restaurant gave other diners vital seconds to escape.

But the book, published last week, also tells the lesser-known story about the “overwhelming feelings of hopelessness” that Roy felt afterwards.

It details his dismay at being made to attend a ‘Prevent’ course, designed to stop people from becoming radicalised by extremists.

At one point, the book says Roy became so depressed that to stave off the nightmares that came with sleep, he bought £100 of amphetamine.

He was caught by police, spending time in prison with people serving lifelong sentences, while he says the media wrongly speculated that he was a drug dealer and he was eventually convicted of possession.

Roy, who grew up on Peckham’s Ledbury Estate, has never received a bravery award or financial compensation, something the book details. “I was only mentioned in the inquest three or four times even though I was one of the main people who saved others.

“Police officers got the George medal.

All they did was the same as I was doing, and they had batons!”

More than 23,000 people signed a petition to get him a George medal. Some say he’s been denied the honour because of allegations of racism.

After the terrorist attack, a video from February 2017 emerged which showed him shouting racist abuse at anti-racism protesters in Elephant and Castle and appearing to spit at a black photographer.

Roy said: “My words were wrong and I apologised” but he questions whether he deserves to have been denied state recognition for his bravery.

He also hasn’t received any Criminal Injuries Compensation, money given to victims of violent crime, because of his unspent conviction relating to amphetamine possession.

Roy writes: “My sincere hope is that those with power will re-look at my criminal injury compensation claim and do the ‘British’ thing which is to be fair and reasonable in all things.

“Knowing all that I now know, I ask myself occasionally: Would I do it again?

Distraction burglars terrorise Rotherhithe Exclusive

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A gang of men posing as council workers are knocking on doors and ransacking people’s homes in Rotherhithe and surrounding areas, police have told the News.

Police are appealing for information as they hunt down the suspects, described as white and aged 40 to 55, and urging the public to be vigilant.

The brazen thieves, whom police said distracted victims while accomplices burgled their homes, are understood to have hit multiple properties since late October.

In a Facebook post written on October 27, one local resident wrote: “Three men pretending to be from Southwark Council came to my mum and dad’s around 1pm today.

“They went through everything and took some jewellery and a bank card. They were all tall, white with hard hats and high vis jackets on in their thirties and wore face masks… police have been called!”

And last month on a separate occasion the News reported how a man masquerading as a council plumber charmed his way into an elderly couple’s Camberwell home, stealing highly sentimental jewellery. It is currently unclear whether the incident is related.

Without presenting ID, they claim to be investigating a leak in an upstairs or adjoining property, before making off with people’s possessions. While the men, whom police say have English or Irish accents, operate in groups of three or four, only one will usually knock on the door.

Video footage released by the Met shows a face-mask-wearing suspect approaching a property, before flinching and covering his face once realising he’s on camera.

The terrifying spate of burglaries has sent shockwaves through the local community, who have shared their disgust at the crimes. One person wrote on Facebook: “It sickens me that there’s

nasty people like that. Please tell your elderly family members not to answer to anyone… if they don’t have appointments.”

Detective Sergeant Will Wigzell, from the Met’s Central South Command Burglary Unit, said: “We are currently investigating a series of distraction burglaries in Southwark and Lambeth in which a group of men are posing as local council workers to gain entry to homes across both boroughs. Once inside, victims reported that one suspect distracted them while another or others burgled the house.

“I am asking members of the public to be particularly vigilant when allowing workmen or those posing as council workers into their home. If you believe

someone is not who they are purporting to be and they match the above description, then dial 999 when safe to do so. Where possible take particular note of any vehicle registration and suspect descriptions and relay this to the call handler at the earliest opportunity.”

“We are releasing images and footage of two men we would like to speak to in connection with the incidents.

Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 5144/24Oct. “Crimes of this nature are taken seriously and I want to re-assure the public that this appeal is part of a wider investigation which is fast-paced and on-going.”

Drunk driver jailed for New Kent Road crash that killed woman riding in a rickshaw

Shocked passengers had their journey cut short when the bus they were on collided with a tree in Rotherhithe.

Just after rush hour at around 10am on Wednesday, November 9, a number 188 bus collided with a tree on Rotherhithe Old Road by Surrey Quays tube station.

Fortunately, no passengers or the bus driver were injured.

A spokesperson for London Ambulance said crews were dispatched, but it was “a damage-only incident, meaning that there were no injured patients to treat.”

Police and London Fire Brigade were also on the scene.

One witness told the News that the bus driver had to be rescued by the Fire Brigade as the impact was so hard it buckled her cabin. He added that she did not appear to be injured, but was shaken up.

“She could not get out her cabin until the fire brigade arrived to wrench it open. I was told it happened as a vehicle, in a hurry, swerved in front of her bus.”

“The ambulances came, but luckily no-one seemed hurt,” he added.

Only the bus appeared to come away with any sort of injury.

Woman injured in suspected hit and run in Peckham

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A female pedestrian has been involved in a suspected hit and run in Peckham.

Police were called to Peckham Hill Street at 5.18pm on Tuesday, November 8 following reports of

a road traffic collision between a pedestrian and a moped.

Officers arrived and said that the moped driver did not stop at the scene. A female pedestrian was taken to hospital with a leg injury that is not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

The road was reopened at 6.10pm.

Luis Balcazar Soto Sophie Strickland, 31, from Wales, died in the Elephant and Castle collision at 4.10am, on 10 July 2022, as she visited the capital to celebrate her birthday with friends.

Luis Balcazar Soto, 24, from Elephant and Castle, was sentenced to nine years and nine months after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, among other offences.

Ms Strickland had been on her way to her hotel with her friend Jade Redford when they stopped to use a cash machine.

Soto’s car then smashed into the rickshaw just after Ms Strickland got back in, throwing her from it.

According to the BBC, Ms Redford, who came back to find her friend lying in the wreckage, told the court: “I knew all I could do was sit there with

Sophie, hold her, stroke her hair and tell her how much she was loved - and that memory haunts me every day.”

In a statement read by prosecutor Fiona Robertson, the victim’s mother Glynis Strickland reportedly said: “Sophie was my only daughter and was the most beautiful thing in my life.

“As a mother, I can’t imagine any greater pain in my life as losing a child I raised to a beautiful woman. In seconds, my life [was] devastated.”

The collision also meant rickshaw driver Tanzir Ahmed, in his 30s, was taken to hospital with a suspected broken arm.

Soto was also food guilty of acting in breach of a restraining order, and breaching a suspended sentence at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday, November 1.

Car gets stuck on stairs of Dulwich pub

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A driver lodged their car on the stairs of The Alleyn’s Head pub after reportedly mistaking the steps for the exit of the pub car park.

The white Toyota became stuck at around 6pm on Thursday, November 10 and was

still there, wrapped in police tape, for well over twelve hours after.

Last Friday, an employee at the West Dulwich boozer said: “Someone just drove through the garden bit and went down the stairs. It’s still there and we’re waiting for something or someone to come and get it” One passerby, noticing the sticker in the car’s window, joked that it was a “National

Trust member gone rogue”.

There were no injuries and no offences were identified. Police say the vehicle has been cordoned off with tape pending recovery.

Located close to the A2199, the pub’s website boasts that it’s “a great spot for good quality pub food” and has a beautiful, spacious beer garden.

Local black-British figures celebrated by ‘Black Panther 2’

By Isabel Ramirez isabel@southwarknews.co.uk A Youtuber and an author are among the famous faces from Peckham featured in a new photo series that will see twenty notable black-British figures celebrated at the screenings of Black Panther 2, in over 300 UK cinemas.

Over the next two weeks, more than 300 Pearl and Dean cinemas across the UK will show a photo series before selected screenings of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The Next Gen collection was created by Underexposed Arts, a black-led arts and cultural organisation founded by actor Fraser James and visual artist Franklyn Rodgers, to celebrate and promote positive representation of black British, dual heritage African/Caribbean actors, writers, creatives, sports and business

people.

Underexposed Arts are best known for their Peckham Portraits which were installed in 2008 along Peckham Hill Street. It became one of London’s longest running public photographic art installations before being removed for building works a decade later. In 2019 it was revived when Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts hosted it again - which is where the Next Gen collection is now.

and Booker Prize winner Bernardine Evaristo OBE, and entrepreneur and founder of SB.TV, the late Jamal Edwards MBE. The portraits also include a few more famous faces from Peckham: author Chidera Eggerue, BMX Olympian Kye Whyte and YouTuber and presenter, Harry Pinero.

Harry said he remembers seeing the Peckham Portraits around the area growing up. “I remember getting the 381 bus from Peckham to Bermondsey and I would see them all the time.

“I would be like ‘wow’, we have this in Peckham. Seeing legends like Idris Elba, Ashley Walters and Jocelyn Jee Esien.

“So to be joining it myself is one of my biggest achievements because the names that have been before me are names that I didn’t even think I had any connection to in the beginning.

“I felt like I had to do something extraordinary. But to be able to be myself, work hard, focus on my craft and not forget the community I came from whilst always trying to give something back for that to be seen and respected by your own community is second to none.”

“Underexposed Arts allow people to believe and know their history and who it belongs to,” he added.

Chidera Eggerue, British-Nigerian author best known for her 2018 book:

‘What a Time to Be Alone’, who was also raised in Peckham, said she was ‘honoured’ to be included in the project.

“Seeing the portraits, I would always tell myself: ‘I can be like Idris Elba or Ashley Walters one day.’ They’ve come from somewhere like me and seeing these images keeps it in the back of my mind that I can get to where I want to get to.

“It feels like a very strange full circle moment to be sat having my portrait taken for a photo set that once inspired me.”

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk The statue of Thomas Guy has been uncovered for conservation work - two years after it was hidden over concerns about his slave trade connections.

In June 2020, soon after the Edward Colston statue was toppled in Bristol, King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust decided to cover the statue in hoardings, citing “a duty to address the legacy of colonialism and slavery”.

The trust has removed the hoardings to do legally required conservation work on the listed statue, which is on the King’s College London university campus near London Bridge. But the trust has reasserted its intention of moving the statue to “a less prominent location”.

A spokesperson for the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust Foundation (GSTT) said: “We’re continuing our work to deliver on the commitment that we made in September 2021 to do more to help people understand the histories of Thomas Guy and Sir Robert Clayton, including the sources of their wealth and their connections to the trade in enslaved people. This is known as interpretation. The statues are listed and require conservation work, which is commencing, while permanent interpretation is developed.”

Thomas Guy, born in 1644 was a British bookseller and investor who founded what would later become known as Guy’s Hospital.

GSTT wants to relocate the statue because of Guy’s investment in the South Sea Company, which was granted a monopoly to supply African slaves to South America by the British government in 1713.

But the trust says the move is unlikely in the short term because of the government’s ‘retain and explain’ policy which means keeping controversial historical statues except in exceptional circumstances.

Police tracing man after sexual assault of woman on Lordship Lane

The police said the woman then boarded the number twelve bus where she was sexually assaulted by the same man again.

Detectives have made numerous enquiries and now want the public’s help identifying the man who they say was captured on CCTV boarding the bus and who they did to contact in connection with their investigation.

He is described as being black and approximately 5ft 8in. He was wearing a dark hoodie with rainbow-coloured writing on the front.

Unsafe cladding removed from Guy’s Hospital five years after it was discovered

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Unsafe cladding has been removed from the Guy’s Hospital cancer centre five years after it failed fire safety tests in 2017.

The tests were carried out following the Grenfell Fire in June 2017, which killed 72 people.

Removal works were supposed to begin in autumn that year but according to a Board of Directors Meeting report, were only completed last month.

The report of the meeting held on Wednesday, November 2 said: “Following the successful completion of removing all aluminium composite material (ACM) cladding from the north side of the centre on 17 October,

scaffolding is now being erected on the west and south sides of the Cancer Centre to enable the next phase of the project to commence.

“Temporary footpath diversions have been installed on Great Maze Pond supported by safety marshals.

“Successful visits to review progress from the London Fire Brigade and the Health and Safety Executive were hosted recently.”

The affected panels covered 15 per cent of the building and contained a kind of aluminium composite material (ACM) associated with the Grenfell fire.

On discovering the material, London Fire Brigade said the building, which is fitted with full fire detection systems and sprinklers, was safe to remain open.

Speaking at the time, Amanda Pritchard, chief executive at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We will carry out remedial work including the removal of cladding to ensure that we comply with the new Government advice, to reassure our patients and the public and to make sure that the cancer centre continues to reflect the highest safety standards.

“This will be done as quickly as possible in a planned and measured way, with work likely to start this autumn.

“The safety of our patients, visitors and staff continues to be our highest priority.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has been asked why it took five years for the cladding to be removed.

Suspected domestic abuser and ‘illegal drugs handler’ arrested as new police recruits take to the street

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Local police teams in Camberwell and Peckham arrested two men on suspected drug and domestic abuse offences on Friday, October 21.

Inspector Cornish from Southwark Police praised neighbourhood officers’ “vigilance” and lauded “an influx of enthusiastic, alert new recruits”.

One arrest - in Tillings Close, Camberwell - saw a man “acting suspiciously” get stopped and searched by police who found suspected Class A and later Class B drugs.

He was arrested and has been released under investigation so lab analysis of the substances could be undertaken.

In Peckham Town Centre, also on the Friday, police recognised a 22-yearold man wanted in connection with the assault of his ex-partner four days earlier.

Police said he fled officers who chased the suspect, eventually catching and arresting him at Elm Grove. The man was subsequently charged with assault and coercive/controlling behaviour and remanded in custody over the weekend to appear in court on Monday, October 24.

Inspector Cornish from Southwark Police said: “The vigilance of Neighbourhood officers has brought suspects to justice and protected vulnerable victims. We are fortunate to have an influx of enthusiastic, alert new recruits who have bolstered the Neighbourhood teams and who are learning fast from their more experienced colleagues”.

Since then, Southwark’s police force has been bolstered further. On Monday, November 7, 42 new officers joined the force through a graduate scheme run by Police Now, a police recruitment charity.

Five of those officers will be posted to Central South area, which covers Southwark and Lambeth.

Southwark Crime Stats: Which wards had the most crime in August?

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk London Metropolitan Police has released the statistics revealing which Southwark wards recorded the most crimes in August this year.

Overall, crime fell significantly in Southwark that month compared to July.

Except in Old Kent Road, recorded crime plummeted in all the top five wards.

It is notable that in Rotherhithe, crime fell again, with just 157 crimes recorded.

Since May, when 231 crimes were recorded, it’s fallen down the list every single month.

1. London Bridge and West Bermondsey: 390 crimes recorded Previous Position: 1st Crimes recorded increase/decrease: -44 London Bridge and West Bermondsey was once again the most crime-ridden award, just as it has been since the News began gathering the data March.

Thefts were the most prevalent offences, with 52 thefts from the person and 86 ‘other thefts’ recorded. ‘Other theft’ includes all incidents when the stolen items wasn’t on the owner at the time.

There were also 67 violent and sexual offences recorded. In October, a police officer was found guilty of sexually assaulting his female colleague at London Bridge station.

2. North Walworth: 347 crimes recorded Previous Position: 3rd Crimes recorded increase/decrease: -14 Although crime fell in North Walworth in August, the drop-off was less than Borough and Bankside’s meaning it goes up to second place.

There were 53 violent and sexual offences, 52 examples of anti-social behaviour and 25 ‘other thefts’ recorded.

4. Old Kent Road: 255 crimes recorded Previous Position: 5th Crimes recorded increase/decrease: +37 Being the only ward in the top five to have seen an increase in crime in August compared to July, Old Kent Road has leapfrogged Rye Lane as the 4th most lawless area in Southwark.

There was an uptick in violence and antisocial behaviour, while theft remained fairly consistence compared to the previous month.

In September, a woman was hospitalised morning after an alleged sexual assault in Burgess Park, just off Old Kent Road.

3. Borough and Bankside: 318 crimes recorded Previous Position: 2nd Crimes recorded increase/decrease: -53 Regularly appearing in the top five most dangerous wards, Borough and Bankside saw a notable drop in criminality in August.

While in July, there were 44 violent and sexual offences, in August, this category of crimes fell so much it didn’t even make the top three most commonly reported offences.

5. Rye Lane: 239 crimes recorded Previous Position: 4th Crimes recorded increase/decrease: -47 Back in March, Rye Lane was the ward with the second most criminality, with a staggering 353 crimes recorded, including 56 violent and sexual offences.

But since then, crime has steadily decreased, making Rye Lane’s August numbers the lowest since March.

However, the stabbing of a man outside the Costa on Rye Lane, Peckham on November 3 shows there is still work to be done.

Smith pleaded guilty to all five counts on Wednesday, November 9, at Westminster Magistrates Court.

He is due to appear at Southwark Crown Court for sentencing at a later date.

According to MailOnline, the charges don’t relate to children who attended the £20,000 a year school where Smith had worked since September.

School principals Tobyn Thomas and Ben Thomas told parents in a statement: “I do not for a minute underestimate the shocking and deeply concerning nature of this news. Our focus right now is on our pupils, parents and colleagues.”

The statement also said the school would not be “elaborating further’” on why he was fired but would continue to work with authorities.

“We will need to work together to respond to children’s questions in an age-appropriate way,” they said. “If you are unsure of what to say to your child, and would like further guidance, please do not hesitate to contact any of the following members of our leadership team.”

A teacher from Dulwich who taught at a Battersea school once attended by royal children pleads guilty to child sexual offences

Matthew Smith, 34, was deputy head of pastoral care at Thomas’s prep school, Battersea, was arrested by National Crime Agency officers at his East Dulwich home last Sunday, November 6.

He was charged with causing or inciting the sexual abuse of a child under 13, distributing indecent images of children in category A, and three counts of making

the school during their time there, as he was hired months after they left.

According to Smith’s LinkedIn profile, he holds prestigious degrees from Oxford and Cambridge universities. It also says he spent five years working at The British School in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Tony Cook, NCA Head of Child Sexual Abuse investigations, said: “These guilty pleas are a significant step in what is an ongoing, complex investigation. Child sex abuse perpetrated online and across borders is a substantial threat to the UK, and the NCA is dedicated to investigating in these challenging spaces in order to safeguard children and pursue the highest risk offenders.”

Erected last week as part of Cycleway 4, the bollards are part of plans to build a two-way cycleway along Lower Road, and prevent right turns onto Lower Road.

Employees and mourners will be forced to turn left towards the Rotherhithe roundabout, which is heavily congested when the Rotherhithe Tunnel closes.

Simon Dyer said: “People are always coming in and leaving here and a lot of our funerals turn right and head to Kent. It’s totally unnecessary and thoughtless towards what we do as a business.”

According to a council consultation report, 69.1 per cent of people supported scrapping right turns from Culling Road onto Lower Road.

The report showed commenters saying the changes would encourage cycling, look nicer and reduce congestion.

But Simon says their concerns haven’t been listened to. He said: “We’re replied to all the consultations to object to cycleways. Saying so many people support it is total lies because everyone I know has been against it.”

According to the consultation report, objectors have said the changes would increase congestion, pollution and cost too much.

Construction of Cycleway 4, which will mean an unbroken cycle route between London Bridge and Greenwich, began in July 2019.

In July, almost looked like the cycleway along Lower Road, the last section of the scheme, wouldn’t go ahead, as Transport for London (TfL) struggled to negotiate a funding settlement with central government.

But the plans resumed when the funding deal, agreed in the summer, meant a £69 million yearly allocation for each London borough.

TfL and Southwark Council have been approached for comment.

Thief used fire extinguisher to smash door and steal £5,000 of camera equipment from studio

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A burglar has stolen £5,000 worth of camera equipment, shattering the door’s glass with a fire extinguisher, at a Bermondsey office.

The thief is believed to have broken into the photographer’s Iggy Pardo Studio, based at the Biscuit Factory, at around 7pm on Thursday, November 3.

They are then understood to have escaped through an exterior door that had been propped open with a sack.

The owner of the photography studio told the News that the burglar appeared to have planned “every movement”.

To access the office, the burglar would have had to get past three separate entrances with fobbed locking systems.

They also seem to have known the location of the fire extinguisher and that they could open the office door from the inside once it had been smashed.

Specialist forensic officers attended the scene on Friday, November 4, and are understood to have searched for fingerprints.

Iggy Pardo Studio say that at least two cameras and several lenses have been stolen, which it is fighting its insurance company to pay for.

A second unit next door to the studio was also broken into, although it is unclear if anything was stolen.

They are hoping to organise a meeting with Workspace, the company running the offices, to establish the circumstances of the burglary.

In a statement, the Met Police said: “Police are investigating following reports of a suspected burglary at a multi-use office space in Drummond Road, SE16 between 5pm and 10.45pm on Thursday, 3 November.

“Specialist forensics officers attended the scene. Enquiries are ongoing to establish if anything was taken.”

No arrests have been made. Those with information are asked to call police on 101 and give reference 8237/3 Nov. Workspace was approached for comment.

• Appealing against the decision can be a natural remedy in all other circumstances, where the decision has been unfair and possibly many of the details supplied have been mis understood.

The Appeal to the First Tier Tribunal works in the following steps,

1.First, you need to have the appeal listed, and it requires to have a detailed appeal grounds written to give reason to challenge the decision. Remember changing your appeal grounds can only be done through a permission application, so getting it right at the start are vital. Standard appeals have a fee of £140 for the Tribunal.

2.Thereafter, you would receive directions on submitting further grounds through a skeleton argument and possibly additional evidences.

3.Now you would receive directions on a full oral hearing at the Tribunal, where you would have Immigration Judge, and a Home Office Presenting Officer on the day.

Guy’s hospital do a week’s worth of surgery in a day to beat backlog

By Isabel Ramirez isabel@southwarknews.co.uk Surgeons at Guy’s hospital who are determined to tackle the backlog of cases have completed a week’s worth of surgery in just one day with the help of robots.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ is the first NHS trust in the UK to carry out eight robotic-assisted operations in one day to treat prostate cancer patients.

Surgeons are using high intensity theatre lists – known as HIT lists – to maximise the number of patients treated to lessen the backlog of cases.

By increasing the number of staff present in the theatre, HIT lists reduce the turnaround time between cases - which can take up to 95% of the day. This means there’s more time for the surgeon to operate.

They focus on one type of procedure at a time, take place at weekends, and require careful planning to select suitable patients.

So far, the Trust has held 17 HIT lists and treated 344 patients across eight specialities, including gastrointestinal, gynaecology, orthopaedics and ear nose and throat (ENT).

Mick Jennings, from West Dulwich, was one of the eight men who were treated at Guy’s. The 59-year-old said:

“It was great – I was told beforehand that the surgery was part of a HIT list, so I was prepared for everything to be quicker than usual.

“You could tell the staff were really energised with the concept and keen to do their best. I didn’t find the pace a problem at all – I found they were trying super hard to do it well.”

Mick, who is an anaesthetist, went home the next day and is recovering well.

He said: “When I went back to the clinic all the other men who had the op were there too and we sought each other out – it made us feel like a bit of a gang.

“I was just happy that I could have the surgery as quickly as possible, and I’m looking forward to getting on with my life again.”

Ben Challacombe, a consultant urological surgeon who led the surgery, said: “We have taken a week off our waiting list by carrying out these surgeries in one day – we would usually do six to eight of these procedures in a week.

“Everyone involved learnt how to work in parallel and felt part of something special. We were focussed on high quality throughout and no cases were rushed.”

‘We have given £25 million of support in the cost of living crisis and now we are giving £2.7 million more’

his month I launched our latest round of support to help Southwark residents through the cost of living crisis.

We have already put in place over £25 million of support for local people hardest hit. Last week I announced a further £2.7million of help.

I also launched our new Southwark Energy Savers service to provide free advice to help keep your bills down and a new network of Warm Spaces so everyone in our borough has a warm place to go this winter.

I announced this new support at our Southwark cost of living summit. A fantastic event that brought together over a hundred people from our voluntary and community sector, MPs, faith leaders, head teachers, community representatives and local public services to find more solutions to the current crisis.

I want to thank everyone who attended. The commitment from all there to get support to everyone in Southwark who needs it was truly heart-warming, and it was great to see so many practical actions identified.

Since 2010, they have cut funding for our local council by two-thirds, a reduction of £142 million. continue to do everything we can to support residents who need help. It is deeply worrying that cost-of-living crisis has plunged so many into hardship.

Foodbank use in Southwark has increased ten-fold since the Conservatives came to power in 2010.

Now their reckless mismanagement of the economy has caused mortgages and private rents to rocket, and put thousands of people’s pensions at risk.

It is clear they are taking our country in the wrong direction.

In contrast, in Southwark, Labour is providing practical help. So far this year we have provided support to over twenty thousand residents. £7.7 million of this has been through our Southwark Cost of Living Fund which is putting extra money in the pockets of residents hardest hit.

The fund was one of our key pledges at May’s local elections. I’m delighted to say we have already delivered on that promise.

We are also providing help for families on low incomes. That includes help

during the school holidays worth more than £100 per child, plus an extra £55 for each child starting secondary school though our School Uniform Grant.

On top of this we are funding Southwark Citizens Advice, so they can provide independent money advice, and help local people get all the help they are entitled too.

The extra support I announced last week has been developed with partners across our community. I want to thank everyone involved in shaping and delivering it.

Our Southwark Energy Savers Service will open its doors in December.

Delivered by Citizens Advice, it will provide free energy advice for everyone in Southwark affected by rising energy bills and the cost-of-living crisis.

Our Warm Spaces will provide over twenty locations across the borough where residents can go to keep warm, have a cup of tea or take part in an activity this winter.

Phase two of our Cost of Living Fund is worth an extra £2.7 million.

It will put additional money in the pockets of residents in need who were not eligible for recent Government

support, and for our most vulnerable residents who need extra help.

Until we have that, I will be ensuring that in Southwark we are doing all we can to support our community through this crisis.

uring this cost-of-living emergency the council must provide radical solutions to help residents who are choosing between eating and heating.

That is why the Southwark Liberal Democrats have put forward a motion for next week’s council assembly that will force the Labour council to provide free school meals to all pupils, including at secondary schools.

One in four households with children faced food insecurity, according to The Food Foundation in October. More and more Southwark residents are struggling.

The Trussell Trust, Britain’s largest food bank network, reported recently that 1.3 million emergency food parcels were handed out in just over six months.

The charity warned that food banks were at “breaking point”, with almost half a million of these parcels given to children. Many in our younger generations are

National Lib Dem analysis found that over 100,000 English children may be missing out on free school meals as income eligibility criteria has not moved with inflation.

The Guardian reported on teachers saying that children not eligible for free school meals are disgracefully having mouldy bread, empty wraps, or nothing at all for lunch. That is unacceptable.

In Southwark, our council rightly provides free school meals for all primary and nursery pupils. I strongly believe this support is vital. But, children in our borough lose this

help from the age of 11 and instead only receive free meals on a meanstested basis in secondary school.

Why should we strip our children of this help, as they grow older?

In March, all Southwark councillors voted to support the Right to Food campaign.

In July, the Southwark Liberal Democrats proposed a radical package of cost-of-living policies that included providing free meals universally to secondary school children over the summer.

At the last council assembly a Labour councillor responded by admitting

that her party’s universal free primary school meals policy was no longer as radical as it once was. She said it was a 2010 policy for challenges in 2010.

This former cabinet member for schools agreed with us that the council must now go further and said it should investigate extending free meals in secondary schools too.

It is time Southwark’s Labour administration caught up and listened to this cross-party consensus.

In October, the council leader tweeted that the government should offer universal free primary school meals nationally. He called free meals for all primary school children “common sense”. It stands to follow that universal free secondary school meals is common sense too.

Children do not stop being hungry when they reach the age of 11. And what better way is there for this council to show the nation how radical it should be then by going a

step further in adopting this 2022 policy to meet 2022 challenges?

We believe Labour should not only stop there. It should also look at the adults who are struggling to feed themselves. That is why our motion calls for emergency funding for any organisation delivering food to the vulnerable. It asks for a restoration of the council’s meals on wheels programme, which delivered to vulnerable and older people’s homes before it was cut in 2017.

And it pushes Southwark to distribute slow cookers to vulnerable residents, so that they can cook healthy meals in a cost-efficient way.

We want hot meals for every household. Because in a cost-ofliving emergency anything short of a radical solution is not good enough.

This motion gives Labour councillors a chance next week to implement the policies that these times demand.

I hope they vote using their common sense.

The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members - the government needs to allow us to do just that

n this week’s paper, as hospital backlogs rise and living costs accelerate, we look at some of the drastic measures being taken to protect people against the pressures of multiple crises.

Southwark Council has just announced the second round of its cost of living fund, a £2.7 million emergency reserve to help people who aren’t covered by the government’s cost-of-living payments.

Warm Spaces is about to launch, a scheme in which local community organisations, churches and small businesses open their doors to the public, so people don’t freeze in their own homes.

Then there is the astonishing story of Guy’s Hospital surgeons - who did a week’s worth of surgeries in one day.

These are all ostensibly good things. Local councils do have a duty of care to their residents and the NHS should streamline wherever it can. These examples of resilience and adaptability are highly commendable, but are they sustainable?

Today, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt will deliver his Autumn Budget to Parliament. At the time of publication, we do not know the details but there are some indications as to what we can expect.

Hunt is expected to deliver tax rises worth £25 billion and spending cuts of £35 billion. Already threadbare departmental budgets will likely be asked to make “efficiency savings”.

Local governments like Southwark Council, currently acting as the final safety net for people falling through the cracks, might well feel the brunt of these cuts.

Tory MPs have already said there is “undoubtedly” fat to be trimmed from local government budgets. This is despite the fact that, as Council Leader Kieron Williams highlights in his column, local councils have seen their funding cut by two-thirds since 2010.

Our political leaders are making portentous statements about the “difficult decisions ahead” but the most difficult decisions this winter - like whether to heat or eat - will be those made by ordinary people, not those walking the corridors of Whitehall.

They say ‘the true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members’.

We know our communities and neighbours are committed to this edict. Can the same be said of our political leaders?

Today’s budget should offer some indication.

Disabled parking bays reinstated at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre after being scrubbed away

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Disabled shoppers can visit Surrey Quays Shopping Centre without having to walk long distances after developer British Land reinstated their disabled bays.

Last month, the News reported that elderly people with painful conditions were being forced to lug heavy bags across the parking lot because their disabled bays had been scrubbed away.

While approximately nine bays remained, over half had been removed. British Land apologised for the “oversight” and has since repainted at least nine new bays next to the shopping centre entrance.

Esther Matthews, 70, whose arthritis confines her to an electric scooter, had been “flabbergasted” when she first found the bays had been scratched away.

Maureen and Roger Chandler, a Lewisham couple in their 70s, also said they’d struggled to do their shopping since losing the disabled spaces.

Esther Matthews contacted this paper after arriving to find the bays had returned. She said: “I’m very happy and I’ve been twice now and

have been able to find a space both times. I am very pleased they’ve taken notice. But I won’t be surprised if come Christmas there might be more problems when more shoppers start coming.”

As well as offering more room for wheelchair users, disabled bays are placed conveniently close to amenities.

Explaining its mistake, British Land, which owns the shopping centre, said

it had reduced the overall area of the car park which had reduced the number of disabled spaces.

A spokesperson for the developer said: “Due to sequencing of the shopping centre car park works that are currently underway, including TfL’s delivery of a new, step-free entrance hall to Surrey Quays Station (which begins construction next year) and the delivery of works to the north of the Shopping Centre, we have reduced the overall area of the shopping centre car park, meaning there have been a significantly reduced number of disabled spaces.

This was an oversight for which we apologise.”

Man attacked ‘with boiling water’ in Walworth

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A man has reportedly been “assaulted with boiling hot water” on Walworth Road, leading to a police appeal for witnesses.

Police were called to the scene near the junction with Carter Place at 5.37pm on Thursday, November 10 to reports of the scalding attack.

London Ambulance Service and Met Police officers attended.

Thankfully, his condition is not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

No arrests have been made enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident.

Man stabbed in the neck in Camberwell

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Police are appealing for witnesses after a man in his twenties was stabbed in the neck in Camberwell this week.

On Monday, November 14, at around 3.25pm, the 26-year-old approached ambulance workers suffering from the neck wound.

Police rushed to the scene on Camberwell New Road where the man was treated for his injuries before being taken to Kings College Hospital by paramedics.

He remains there in a stable condition after his injuries were assessed as being neither lifethreatening or life-changing by the hospital.

An investigation is being led by detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department. No suspect has been identified.

A police spokesperson said: “Please do contact my staff office or me if you have any questions or wish to discuss any further aspect of this incident with me.”

Curran, 24, took three wickets in the decider as he conceded only twelve runs in four overs. He was also named man of the match.

England chased 137, 2019 one-day World Cup hero Ben Stokes ensuring victory with an unbeaten 52 off 49 balls as his side won by five wickets at the MCG in Melbourne, Australia.

Left-arm bowler Curran finished the tournament having taken thirteen wickets, a figure that was only beaten by Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga.

“The way I bowl, I go into the wicket with my slower balls and keep the batsmen guessing,” Curran said. “World Champions, how good.”

Stokes added: “I think in finals when you are chasing you forget the hard work that went before. I think the way we bowled, Adil Rashid, Sam Curran, that’s what won us the game.”

Wonderkid wins strong Southwark Open By sports reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY WONDERKID Cam Crabtree warmed up for last week’s debut on the televised Modus Super Series by winning the Southwark Open at the Spots and Stripes earlier this month, after coming through a very strong field to prevail.

The nineteen-year-old, who also plays for Vauxhall in the London Superleague, kicked off with a win over Swiss Cottage’s Charlie Hardie 4-0 and despatched Paul Stern and Dean Cross, both 4-1, to book a semifinal berth. There he met the last tournament’s runner-up, Southwark IDL Champion Ricky Martin. A 5-2 win in a scrappy affair was followed by a 6-3 final success over last month’s Open winner, Collier Row’s John Nelson.

The IDL is happy to be teaming up with the Amateur Darts Circuit (ADC) to offer local players more opportunities to play at a higher level,

Millwall close to huge upset but knocked out on penalties

By Jeff Burnige at St Paul’s sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIONESSES were agonisingly close to an upset victory in the first round of the FA Cup against National League Gillingham last Sunday, before losing on the twelfth penalty in the shootout following a 2-2 draw in a dramatic 120 minutes football.

time Gillingham fortuitously equalised through former Millwall academy player Kara Foudjour who was left with a tap-in into an empty net after a defensive mix-up.

It was the last kick of the game and then in the shoot-out the Lionesses led all the way, but with the decisive fifth and last penalty Gills keeper Cara Davies produced a vital save to break Lioness hearts. She the repeated the trick to send the Gills through to the next round, leaving Millwall wondering how on earth they had lost the game.

The crowd saluted the Lionesses players with a great and well deserved ovation when they finally climbed to their feet and came over to the stand.

They knew that they had witnessed something special and now this very special Millwall team deserve the same support as they go for promotion to the National League South East Division.

It was so nearly a perfect day, beginning with a large crowd paying their own Millwall-style tribute on Remembrance Day which included a perfect rendition of the Last Post by Corporal Jake Pugsley of the Rifles Regiment. This was a contest between Millwall with their proud history and Gillingham from two divisions above them, and the Gills were strong favourites.

The National League side took the

lead on 20 minutes, but both teams were attacking, roared on by the supporters, and ten minutes later centre-back Jade Keogh equalised from a corner. Up front, the Lionesses’ two youngsters, Angel Reid and Kaydence Kabadaki, were posing big problems, but it was the more experienced Otesha Charles who was causing havoc, and she went close on several occasions.

Gillingham had most of the chances in the second half, but young Millwall goalkeeper Serena Hand looked unbeatable, and at 90 minutes it was 1-1.

In a pulsating extra-time, Millwall had the edge, and after 101 minutes two Lionesses substitutes combined with Lauren Williams brilliantly setting up Lucy Jellett for an unstoppable shot into the roof of the Gills net.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FISHER ENDURED a last-gasp defeat in the second round of the FA Vase as Jersey Bulls stunned the hosts with a 94thminute winner at St Paul’s last weekend.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET suffered a 5-1 defeat at Havant & Waterville last weekend as they slipped to 20th in the National League South season, one point above the relegation zone.

The Fish, who were hoping for another long cup run to distract from their league worries, went in front in the fourteenth minute.

Darnelle Bailley King’s cross from the right was only half-cleared allowing Sam FitzGerald to find Eni Amgbaduba who finished at the second attempt.

In the 20th minute, Cedric Nganga passed to Amgbaduba who shot when perhaps he should have found a team-mate.

Fisher were then handed another advantage when Miguel Carvalho was sent off for a poor tackle.

But Nganga then had to depart after injuring his ankle.

After Justice Owusu had saved to preserve his side’s lead, the Fish

lost Amgbaduba after he suffered a dead leg just before half-time.

Without a number of injured attacking players, Ajay Ashanike’s side defended deep in the second half and tried to hit the Islanders on the break.

The visitors continued to push their opponents back and got their reward in the 75th minute when Lorne Bickley beat Owusu to level.

Fisher have had plenty of success in penalty shoot-outs this season and it appeared to be heading that way again, only for the Combined Counties League Premier Division South side – the same level on the pyramid as their opponents – to force one last corner and Luke Campbell broke home hearts when he bundled the ball into the net.

Fisher are back in SCEFL Premier Division action this weekend when they will once again try to get their league form going. They are bottom of the table ahead of their clash with fourteenth-place K Sports.

Kick-off in Rotherhithe on Saturday is 3pm.

Dulwich battled well in the second half and had chances, but Havant put a gloss on the score-line with another double, this time from Danny Wright in the 88th and 93rd minutes.

Dulwich’s next game is away at Taunton Town next Tuesday (November 22).

The Lions were keen to show that they weren’t messing around at Deepdale and took the lead after just three minutes. Andreas Voglsammer’s powerful cross from the right flank found Zian Flemming in the penalty box, allowing him to hold up the ball with his back to goal, swivel around and fire it into the bottom left corner to make it 0-1.

Preston looked for an immediate response, with Ched Evans the clear outlet in the final third. He was presented with two chances soon after, heading into the palms of George Long in the eleventh minute from point-blank range.

In the fifteenth minute, Liam Lindsay ended up bringing down Tom Bradshaw on the edge of the penalty area, picking up the first yellow card of the game.

It looked to be the perfect range for Flemming, which is exactly what it was, as the Dutchman’s low effort fizzed past Freddie Woodman and into the back of the net.

Just four minutes later, Preston finally found their response, albeit in a fortuitous fashion. Robbie Brady’s freekick clipped the wall, with the hosts winning a corner that pinballed around the box. In the end, Browne managed to prod the ball into the back of the net, albeit that it may go down as a Long

Boss Gary Rowett responded by bringing on Scott Malone for George Honeyman, switching to a 5-2-3 for the final 38 minutes of the match. It did little to nullify Evans, however, who broke down the right flank before firing a low, curling effort well wide of the target.

Just as the tempo began to drop, Millwall’s star man came up with the goods once again to put them back ahead. Danny McNamara’s low cross beat everyone in the centre of the box, rolling towards the feet of Flemming.

The attacker managed to bring it out from underneath him, compose himself and fire it into the back of the net from close range to grab his hat-trick shortly after the hour-mark.

The Lions weren’t done there, however. With 72 minutes on the clock, Malone played a short corner to Andreas Voglsammer, who in turn crossed from the left flank towards Bradshaw. The striker flicked it on into the path of Charlie Cresswell, with the towering centre-back rushing in to head the ball into the back of the net to restore their two-goal lead.

Preston were limited to long-range effort in the final stages of the game as Millwall ran out the clock with substitutions and a slower style of play, helping them pick up a fabulous win on the road.

Zian Flemming took his total for the campaign up to eight goals ball into the ground and past Long to level the scores. The Lions had already surrendered the lead and truthfully were lucky to go into the break level after another good chance for Evans

Lions achieve their early-season goal as Gary Rowett targets promotion charge

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL’S WIN against Preston North End was obviously significant.

Not only was it the Lions’ second victory on the road so far this season, as well as Zian Flemming’s first Championship hat-trick, but it was also a result that propelled them into the play-off places ahead of the World Cup break.

This is something that would have been unimaginable just two months ago, with the Lions sitting in nineteenth place after their 2-0 defeat at home to QPR on September 14th. Manager Gary Rowett often argues that his side did not start the campaign poorly, although it’s clear that the increased expectations increased the pressure on him during their winless run.

Perhaps it wasn’t a surprise. August was a nightmarish month for Millwall where they faced a number of the top teams in a short period of time. The likes of Sheffield United, Norwich City and Burnley all claimed maximum points at home to the Lions, which wasn’t necessarily a major surprise, especially while record signing Zian Flemming

continued to recover from a minor injury.

The odd positive result provided a ray of positivity amidst an underwhelming run. A 2-1 win at home to Blackpool was the perfect way to go into the September international break, but Millwall returned with a defeat at Blackburn Rovers at the start of October. At that point, it was clear that something needed to change.

Rowett rolled the dice, moving away from his preferred back five system to adopt a 4-2-3-1 formation. The impact was instant, with a 1-1 draw away to Rotherham United showing a clear improvement. The Lions then embarked on a four match winning run that saw them claim the scalps of Middlesbrough, Bristol City, Watford and West Brom.

It was a streak that saw them receive significant attention, from Flemming’s screamer at the New York Stadium to Tom Bradshaw’s first-half hat-trick against the Hornets. Crucially, they found themselves in the top six for the first time since the opening day of the campaign, which is exactly where they want to be at 5pm on May 6th.

All good things must come to an end,

of course, although Millwall showed just how quickly they can go from one extreme to another. Their 1-0 defeat against rock-bottom Huddersfield Town preceded a goalless run that saw them play out 0-0 draw against both Birmingham City and ten-man Hull City.

Just when frustrations began to return and supporters began to question the Lions’ attacking threat, they put four goals past Preston, one of the strongest defensive outfits in the entire division, in their own backyard, defying all logic based on their three previous results.

At the end of the day, there is little to no logic to how Millwall play.

Consistency certainly isn’t their forte, while their strength at both ends of the pitch has been doubted at different periods of the season.

Millwall secured their second away win of the campaign while also scoring four goals in a Championship game for the first time this season.

Despite all the positives, Rowett highlighted a number of areas where his players need to improve after the World Cup break if they are to maintain their position in the play-off places and compete for a place in the Premier League.

“I thought we got into some good positions,” he said after the game.

“When we actually moved the ball, we had a little bit of composure, in the first half we got it out to our full-backs. Against a 5-3-2, there’s always that little bit of space there and you’ve got to switch one side, try to get it back to the other side and then step back into the space and see what happens.

“Again, I think we’ve spoken about trying to get the ball into forward areas quicker with control. There were times where Zi [Flemming] stood in a massive space where we either find him and we get into a great area or we just ignore it and go wide.

“It’s those little moments where we’re fighting and searching for that little bit of extra quality at times, but I don’t think anyone would ever question our character.

“To be 2-0 up away from home at a tough place like this, they [Preston] don’t concede many goals, to then be 2-2 and end up winning the game 4-2, it shows what our group is all about.

“It was nice today to see that little bit of quality at times.”

Millwall bounced back from their three-match goalless run with a convincing 4-2 win against the Lilywhites, helping them climb into the top six ahead of the World Cup break.

“It was a pretty end-to-end game,” he told the News after the game.

“First half, obviously scoring two early goals, I think we got too comfortable. We sat in and invited pressure, but we came out in the second half fighting.

“I think it showed. Obviously we were at it all over the pitch and we got the two goals we wanted to go on and win the game.

“We wanted to go into the international break with a win, and obviously it’s a massive positive.

“We’re sitting nicely in the table now with a game in hand as well. The lads are buzzing, but we’ve got to keep sticking with it and go again.”

Their win in Lancashire was far from perfect, however. Despite racing into a 2-0 lead after just sixteen minutes, goals from Andrew Hughes and Ched Evans pegged them back shortly before half-time. It forced manager Gary Rowett to dig into his players at the interval, sparking an improved performance that saw them pick up all three points.

“The gaffer came in and blasted us

all at half-time, which we deserved.

We then came out in the second half and put a shift in.

“Everyone in the changing room has got that extra bit of grit about them and obviously it showed.”

While McNamara picked up his first assist of the season for Millwall’s third goal, he certainly didn’t take the spotlight.

Zian Flemming’s performance saw him take the match ball home, taking his total for the season up to eight goals.

Nonetheless, the defender felt proud of his attacking contribution while also praising his Dutch teammate for finishing off the chance for a spectacular third goal.

“Zi scoring a hat-trick obviously shows the quality we’ve got in the team. All over the pitch, everyone worked really hard, and it showed.

“He was all over the pitch today and he got what he deserved. I’m really delighted for him.

“I’m over the moon to get the assist, obviously everyone was at it today and it helped us get the victory.

“It’s something I need to bring into my game, hopefully I can add to that as the season goes on.”

From his immense quality on the pitch to his humble and friendly personality off it, the Dutchman’s profile has risen dramatically since arriving in South London back in June.

Dubbed ‘the Bermondsey Bergkamp’ by the club’s supporters, he’s already scored eight goals in just seventeen league matches despite missing the early stages of the campaign through injury.

His performances haven’t gone unnoticed either. The 24-year-old was nominated for the Championship Player of the Month award for October and doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. His hat-trick against Preston North End on Saturday afternoon is the latest in a line of incredible performances that have helped the Lions climb into the top six ahead of the World Cup break.

Of course, Gary Rowett recognises what Flemming has brought to his side, highlighting the extra work that he’s put in to become one of the best players in the division so far this season.

“He’s very level-headed, but there’s different parts to him,” the Millwall boss said.

“I think I’ve spoken about his professionalism, the way he recovers. He knows the Championship is a tough league, he’s put muscle on, a little bit of extra size on because he knows he needs that to compete.

“What he’s got is that little bit of quality and composure. I felt his characteristics would suit the Championship. Even though he’s got that Dutch bit of quality, he’s got that steel and a bit of physicality as well.

“The other thing that people don’t see is that he’s a leader. He’s come in and started to give people information, he understands the game really well. He’s a very easy player to be able to tell him something tactically and he gets it straight away, and he can help some of the other players.

“I think there’s lots of attributes, but he’s a really mature young guy with an incredible future ahead of him if he keeps working as hard as that.

“Our players as well, we’re a hard-working team. I think our players appreciate what he brings to us as an individual. We spoke about that last year with someone like Jed [Wallace] leaving, but I felt Zian would bring something different to the table and different attributes that make us a different type of team.”

The Lions have had up to four players unavailable at one time towards the end of October, with Shaun Hutchinson [hamstring] and Benik Afobe [knee] still recovering. Murray Wallace [groin / suspension] and Ryan Leonard have only recently returned to first-team training, although the reality is that they haven’t been missed as much as many fans would have expected.

Millwall have ended the start of their Championship campaign in good form,

losing just one of their last nine matches, while manager Gary Rowett has still faced a number of selection dilemmas despite missing some of his best players.

“I think we’ve got a lot of starters,” he told the News.

“We’ve got a lot of players that would expect to start, a lot of players that would’ve come to the club looking to start games.

“I think every player does, don’t they?

But we’ve got some very good players that have started for other teams in the Championship and are in and out of our team.

“I think that’s partly down to the strength of the squad and partly down to the fact that, to get to the point where we

want to get to, people have to take their opportunity very quickly and they need to do that either by scoring goals, keeping clean sheets or performing really, really well.

“It’s difficult. Sometimes as a player you need a run of games to get that level, but it’s also hard when you’ve got quite a lot of players in that position. It’s been a bit of a challenge.

“That, again, is my job. That’s what I do, that’s what I have to do. I’ll never complain about having a strong squad and needing to make those kinds of decisions.

“With some of the players, at times, you feel like you want to give them a little bit more than being in and out or having 20 minutes off the bench.

“It’s a squad game, it’s a long season, and everyone will get pretty much the same opportunity at some point.”

Millwall occupy a place in the play-offs heading into the World Cup break despite sitting in sixteenth as recently as October 1st.

The Lions boss was keen to avoid judging his team based on their early form, instead telling the News at the start of the campaign that he needed ten home games and ten away games to get a proper idea of how they were progressing.

They reached that landmark in Saturday’s 4-2 win away at Preston North End, a result that saw them climb into the top six with a game in hand on all the teams above them in the table. After 20 games, they’ve won nine, drawn four and lost seven, giving them 31 points.

Rowett is delighted by their position in the table but is adamant that they can improve their performances on the pitch as they continue to vie for promotion to the Premier League.

“I think we deserve to be in and around

where we are,” he explained.

“I think in the last nine games we’ve won five, drawn three and lost one, and we’ve played some very good teams in there.

“I’ve said it before, we’re more than a match for anyone physically. At times, we need to show a little bit more quality.

“I said to the players in there, I think we’ve still got four or five players that still haven’t quite shown the quality that they’ve got. I think the improvement is there and I think we’ve got further to improve.”

The World Cup now gives them three weeks until their next match, a trip to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland on December 3rd. Some players are heading off on holiday ahead of returning to training next week, but Rowett is using the time to pinpoint what his team can do better in the second half of the season.

“The break probably comes at a good time in some ways because it allows everyone to sit back and allows everyone to reflect. You go into that break feeling positive at least.

“In the Championship, you never get time to breathe. If you’re one of our players and you’re flying off to somewhere like Barbados for eight days, then I’d say that you’re pretty happy that the international break has come at this time.”

The Lions have no players involved in the tournament in Qatar after Tom Bradshaw missed out on a place in the Welsh national team. It means that the manager will have his entire squad available when they return to training next week.

Rowett is adamant that he will make time to watch the Three Lions, telling the News about his surprise that AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori was left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad, although he explained that his main focus will be on Millwall’s preparation for the January transfer window and the rest of the season.

“I’ll watch them, I’ll always watch England, especially in the big tournaments,” he clarified.

“Again, it’ll just be interesting to fit it around training and matches and whatever happens.

“We’ll try and do our best. I’m sure the players will want to watch one or two of the games, although I think some players nowadays aren’t as bothered about watching the football.

“When I was a kid, I used to watch every game and I still do. It’s hard to understand when people don’t, but everyone’s different, aren’t they?”
