‘Labour is still the party of equality!’: Johnson Situ on his bid to become the MP for Camberwell and Peckham

Raised in Peckham, and a former pupil at Oliver Goldsmith Primary School, Situ’s rise through the political ranks has been impressive.

Now aged just 34, he has been a Peckham ward councillor, occupied a Southwark cabinet position, and is now a senior advisor to the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. In 2020, he was widely tipped as a strong candidate for the Southwark council leader role but lost out to Kieron Williams.

Now hoping to claim the safe parliamentary seat held by the outgoing MP Harriet Harman since 1982, Situ said: “I’m absolutely passionate about standing up for my community.

“I grew up in Camberwell and Peckham during the ‘80s and ‘90s when we saw the public services that my community relied on stripped back. Now we’re seeing history repeat itself. Quite simply I want to fight for the community.”

As a councillor, Johnson led ‘Southwark Stands Together’ a council-backed antiracism initiative inspired by the murder of George Floyd and health inequalities exposed by the pandemic.

Rival candidate Maurice McLeod was

recently removed from the process by Labour, and claimed his anti-racism campaigning had contributed to the decision. McLeod said Labour had no place for “black and brown socialists”.

Asked if his own anti-racism campaigning proved this to be untrue, Situ said: “I’m quite sure that, at its core, the Labour Party is one that fights for equality and that’s why I’m standing.”

But can Labour really be the party of equality when the most senior black and ethnic minority politicians overwhelmingly represent the Tories?

In response, Situ highlighted that of the 65 minority ethnic Members, 41 (63%) are Labour and 22 are Conservatives (34%) but said that equality is something “the incoming Labour government needs to pay close attention to”.

Situ says he will be “a national campaigning MP rooted in the local community” and will be setting up a permanent constituency office, something which Harman does not have.

The News asked whether Harman’s success as an MP had been limited by not having a constituency office. Situ said: “Harriet was a really fantastic MP in championing the area and she did have constituency surgery

- I helped out at a couple of constituency surgeries and she was of course ever-present in the community.”

Pressed on why it was necessary to set up a constituency office if Harriet Harman was ‘ever-present in the community’, Situ would not be drawn, saying: “I’m very much focussed that I want to do as an MP…. it’s important people get to know me and see me so that’s why I would want a local constituency office.”

As a Peckham councillor, Johnson helped create 2,000 apprenticeships paying the London Living Wage. By law, apprentices only have to be paid £4.81 per hour but this meant that trainees earned £10.90 per hour.

Johnson says he hopes to one day become a cabinet minister, and would campaign for more housing, a better-funded NHS, and protection against climate change.

He said he would campaign for universal free child care and is in favour of bringing the minimum wage up to the living wage.

Johnson concluded by saying: ”My journey into politics has been about getting people more involved in politics. I want to champion policy at the highest level and to inspire the community I represent to get more involved in politics. I don’t want politics to be seen as for them, and not for us.”

Williams agrees, arguing the council has no more fat to cut: “None of us voted for this ridiculous failed experiment – and Southwark should not be punished for The Conservative Party’s mistakes.

“Local services were already under serious strain due to rocketing inflation, soaring interest rates, and rising demand; and now our estimated budget gap stands at £20 million for 2023-4.”

Since 2010, when the Conservative-Lib Dem coalition came into power, government grant funding for local authorities has been cut by almost two-thirds (£142million).

In September, cross-party group London Councils asked the government for a Covid-style emergency budget boost to see them through the cost-of-living crisis.

Williams continued: “Labour in Southwark is already doing everything we can to support families through the cost of living crisis, including launching a £7.7 million cost-of-living fund to support the hardest hit in our borough.

“While you were crashing the economy, we have been fighting to provide the support and services people need. Southwark shouldn’t pay the price for Conservative incompetence.”

The government was approached for comment.

By Michael Holland bromley35@aol.com Opening in The Hithe opposite Rotherhithe Station, Rotherhithe and East London Playhouse (THE REP) is a new arts space offering local and London audiences PayWhat-You-Can and free shows, to those who would not normally be able to afford it.

The Rotherhithe Playhouse was founded by Phil Willmott immediately following the first lockdown in 2020, putting on classic productions in unusual spaces, and they now move into their new home where they continue to serve the community.

The Hithe, an eye-catching bottle green structure, provides the company with an intimate studio space and an outdoor space for summer shows.

The programme will include children’s shows alongside classic plays, with their first season opening with children’s show Telling Tails from Ukraine (28 Oct – 6 Nov) based on Eastern European folklore, alongside Shakespeare’s All’s Well That Ends Well (25 Oct – 6 Nov).

The Christmas season will feature the premiere of The Christmas Wife, Lisa Kuma’s adaptation of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and children’s show The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. THE REP is committed to mounting a show that’s free for under 14s every half term and school holiday. It is the

artistic vision of the venue that children should be able to see theatre not just once or twice in their childhood, but habitually, naturally, and without fear of feeling excluded or that they won’t be able to afford it.

In addition, large amounts of tickets to each show will be available on a Pay What You Can basis, and free tickets are available for those accessing food banks and subsidised school meals. Audiences can access the tickets through the website by selecting the amount they want to pay or by emailing to request free tickets.

The repertoire will place equal importance on theatre for younger and older audiences building on Willmott’s Essential Classics programming, established over 15 years at London’s summer theatre season at The Scoop, City Hall. Great plays of the past are carefully chosen for their relevance to our lives today.

After a 30-year multi-award-winning international career as a theatre maker and writer, Artistic Director Phil Willmott wants to ensure that theatre not only survives but thrives in the community. He said, “As a kid, theatre was really important to me. I didn’t go

to a particularly good school so I would take myself off on Saturday afternoons to see plays and musicals at Bristol Old Vic. It was how I learnt about the world.

“When Covid closed all the theatres, I realised there was a real danger of a whole generation of kids never being taken to the theatre, who will have never seen the plays they are studying.

I felt the longer the pandemic went on, the more people would get out of the habit of going to the theatre, so an entire art form could die away.”

The Hithe is an exciting new landmark building opposite Rotherhithe Station, a vital community hub, in a neighbourhood undergoing rapid change.

It is constructed of an efficient lightweight steel and timber frame and sits on the site’s existing foundations, largely eliminating the need for any new concrete in the project. Working within the constraints of a tight budget, the structure has been designed to be fully demountable and re-locatable, every ten years ensuring long-term use.

The building acts as a hinge point between the existing community and the new developments around it, aiming to connect new and existing residents as the area undergoes significant change.

The Hithe’s design complements the vision that local people have for the identity of the area, without losing sight of Rotherhithe’s dockland history.

Rotherhithe Playhouse began as soon as the first lockdown was lifted with Hamlet performed on the sand banks of the Thames and continued to stage classic plays in unusual spaces including Great Expectations in the gardens of Rotherhithe’s Victorian former mortuary and Macbeth staged in the courtyard of The Ship pub.

All’s Well That Ends Well will be directed by Phil Willmott and continues in Rotherhithe Playhouse’s tradition of producing classic plays in accessible ways. One of Shakespeare’s most puzzling plays, it tells the story of Helena, a doctor’s daughter who falls hopelessly in love with Bertram and is granted his hand in marriage by a grateful King of France against the young man’s wishes. The moral compass of the play spins throughout, with no one behaving quite as expected, but doing what they need to survive.

Telling Tails from Ukraine is a family show for half term, based on Eastern European folktales as seen through the eyes of the fantastical beasts there, including the excitable, motley animal crew of The Mitten, a much-loved story of a hedgehog, a rabbit, a mouse, an owl, and a bear all trying to take up residence in an old man’s lost glove.

“At several points, Michael wanted to go down to the bedroom but the man would stop him and say ‘don’t get yourself up - you enjoy your eats’. He

was distracting us, keeping us talking,” said Joan.

At one point he asked the couple to turn the radio up, which they think was to ensure they couldn’t hear a coconspirator rummaging around.

He refused all their offers of food, tea and coffee, which they now believe was to avoid leaving any DNA evidence.

The man finally left the house, departing with bogus assurances about returning on Monday to fix their imaginary damp problem.

The couple finally went into their bedroom and found it had been ransacked and that dozens of jewellery items were missing.

This included a bible-shaped gold locket and a silver ring with a heartshaped jewel with ‘I love you’ engraved on the inside - both gifts to Joan after the death of her twin, Lesley.

“It was so sudden when my brother died. We had a call saying he’d had a heart attack. We saw him in hospital and he said he was hurting but said that he was alright. Then he died two days afterwards,” says grief-stricken Joan.

She added: “I had a breakdown. We were twins and I was so close to him.

We did everything together. He was loved by everyone. There wasn’t a nasty bone in his body.”

Since their ordeal, Joan and Michael are often scared to answer the phone, fearing a scammer is at the other end.

Joan has missed a hospital appointment as a result.

The Met Police, which has since distributed leaflets around the estate warning of distraction burglaries, said: “This was a cowardly and intrusive crime committed against a couple in their 70s.

“The items stolen from a bedroom were of huge sentimental value but of little value to the thief. Detectives are following lines of enquiry to identify the burglar and the couple are being supported by local officers.

“Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact police on 101 and quote CAD 3765/20OCT22.”

Recently, Southwark Council extended its operating hours from daytime hours to 8.30am to 11pm seven days a week. Local residents need a permit costing £133 to park during those times.

Asked why people don’t just buy residents’ parking permits, Steve said signing up online “is very difficult”, especially because you sometimes can’t register your address if you live on an estate.

Steve is not alone in his struggles. At the meeting at St James’ Church, one man said his elderly relatives had struggled with the online sign-up: “If they type in the wrong number they’ll get in trouble because they’re ruthless - the traffic wardens around here.”

Maxine, chair of the Cherry Gardens Development, Bermondsey, who previously submitted an anti-CPZ petition with over 300 signatures, said elderly people’s carers risked being fined: “Not all carers are employed by Southwark. There are a lot of employed by private agencies

who come from outside the borough.

“The whole system in Southwark is very complicated and I see it as a trap where they get revenue by making it difficult for ordinary people to get the right information on parking.”

A council officer explained the reasoning behind the CPZ. She said that Southwark’s thriving night-time economy meant it was necessary to extend parking restrictions into the night. Another officer from Southwark Highways told meeting attendees that “no local authority” would consider going back to a paper-based parking permit system. They told the

meeting: “It’s not quite on our list of properties to review the zone, so it will probably be another six months because there are other areas we are looking at in the borough.”

In response, Lib Dem North Bermondsey Councillor Rachel Bentley said: “We’ve had lots of residents say ‘my family can’t visit and the weekend, I can’t have carers and tradespeople come by’. There is a need for a review in parts of the ward.” in 2020, Southwark Lib Dems submitted a motion to split the CPZ in two, with separate rules for the Shad Thames area but this was rejected by the council.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk An elderly Camberwell couple have been burgled by a “cowardly” criminal who masqueraded as a council plumber to steal almost all their highly-sentimental jewellery.

The crafty thief “charmed” the innocent grandparents with talk of ornaments and music while an accomplice is believed to have ransacked their bedroom, on Thursday, October 20.

Among the dozens of items stolen from Joan, 75, was a bible-shaped locket - a gift to commemorate her beloved twin brother, Lesley, who died following a heart attack in July.

“I haven’t stopped crying,” says Joan.

“All I want is for this man to give me back my bible locket and rings. I don’t care how you do it, just give it back.

That’s all I’m asking for.”

Joan and her husband Michael, 77, married for forty years, were settling down for dinner at around 1.30pm at their Comber Estate home when they heard a door knock.

Joan answered to a 6ft white man in his forties, wearing a blue baseball cap and workman’s gear. He claimed to have accidentally caused a flood while working on an upstairs flat and said he needed to check their home for damp.

“He was so convincing and very charming that we invited him in and offered him a cup of tea and a coffee,” said Joan.

The couple say he came in and left the door ajar, which they now believe allowed an accomplice to sneak in and go into their bedroom.

Bermondsey locals rage against ‘complicated’ parking permits that leave the elderly ‘confused and excluded’ exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Police have released images of three women they are tracing to help them with their investigation following a ‘violent attack’ at London Bridge Underground Station.

At around 11.05pm, on Friday, September 16, a group of women allegedly “set upon” two others at the bottom of the stairs in the ticket hall.

Police say the victims were “thrown to the floor”, had their heads “stamped on”, and were taken to hospital. They weren’t seriously injured but were “understandably shaken”.

Officers believe the girls in the CCTV images may have information that could help with their investigation.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Carers are struggling to reach elderly people living in Bermondsey’s Controlled Parking Zone G (CPZ G) because parking permits are so hard to get, according to angry local residents.

The online interface to get the permits has even stumped Millpond Estate Chair of the Tenants’ and Residents’ Associationre Steve Evans, a computer science graduate who worked on a major bank’s technology team.

Many are now asking for the CPZ to be reviewed or taken away altogether, but a council officer said reviewing the CPZ was “not quite on their list of priorities”.

At a North Bermondsey Ward meeting on Thursday, October 20, at St James’ Church, locals vented their mounting anger. Steve Evans said: “It’s very difficult for people living on the estate to get visitors who can just park on the road. Because the restrictions are right through seven days until 11pm, visitors who used to come in the evening can’t anymore.”

Borough mum who failed to protect 18-month-old son before he was killed is found guilty of child cruelty

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk The mum of an 18-month-old boy has been found guilty of child cruelty and warned she faces jail, after failing to protect her son before he was killed by her boyfriend.

The boyfriend Scott Coombe, a 24-yearold postman from Petts Wood, Kent, pleaded guilty to manslaughter at a hearing at the Old Bailey in February.

On Monday this week, October 24, at the same court the little boy’s mother Tamika Beaton, 25, from Borough, was found guilty by the jury after she denied child cruelty.

The court heard how Beaton failed to raise concerns despite being aware that her child was being abused by her boyfriend.

Little Andrew Cawker had suffered numerous injuries before he died and after the trial Detective Sergeant Quinn Cutler, a homicide detective, who led the investigation said: “This is an utterly heart-breaking case where a defenceless child has sustained prolonged abuse at the hands of those who should have been caring for him, resulting in his death.

“Andrew should have been in the place where he felt safe; at home with his mother and her partner. However, over the course of a year, Andrew suffered

“His mother, Tamika Beaton, clearly suspected Coombe was responsible for these injuries but chose not to intervene or seek help. Indeed, when questioned by police she sought to place the blame on another man.

“While Beaton did not directly inflict injuries on her son, her inaction most certainly played a part in his death.”

The pair had started a relationship in July 2018 with Coombe moved into

Beaton’s flat and over the course of a year, the court heard how he repeatedly assaulted Andrew, culminating in an incident on 9 July 2019 when the London Ambulance Service was called.

Coombe claimed Andrew had fallen over and suffered a seizure. However, after he was admitted to hospital and examined by medical professionals, suspicions were raised that the injuries sustained could not have been accidental.

Guilty: Scott Coombe of GBH and following Andrew’s death he was further arrested on suspicion of murder.

A post-mortem examination concluded Andrew had died as a result of a head injury but a number of other bruises were found around his face and shoulder.

The pathologist remarked that given the level of injuries, the account given by Coombe as to how they were sustained was ‘implausible’.

Detectives examined the phones of both Coombe and Beaton and discovered a series of pictures and messages

documenting various injuries suffered by Andrew over a period of months. While some were accompanied by messages with attempts to explain how they had happened, what was clear was that the injuries were sustained while Andrew was in the sole care of Coombe.

As the injuries continued, the court heard how Beaton made insinuations to her former partner – Andrew’s father – that the injuries could have been caused by him while he was looking after the toddler. Police said she repeated these accusations when interviewed, despite knowing that the injuries had been sustained when Andrew was being looked after by Coombe.

The court heard Beaton also indicated that she was aware that Andrew was sustaining his injuries while in the care of Coombe in messages sent to her mother.

However, for whatever reason, she chose not to take action but instead allowed the abuse to continue.

Both Beaton and Coombe will be sentenced on Friday, November 18.

Neil Horan, who has a history of fanatical stunts, was reportedly removed by police shortly before incoming Hindu PM Rishi Sunak addressed the nation, on Tuesday, October 25.

According to witnesses, the gathered crowd “waved their fists” and shouted “f*ck off’ at the 75-year-old Irish devotee.

The supermarket has confirmed that it will open on Thursday at 8am. From thereafter, its usual store opening times will be 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

As part of the works, the store has been completely refurbished to deliver an “enhanced in-store experience” for customers.

Lidl’s regional head of property, Max Clapton, said: “We would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding whilst we have carried out these improvement works.

“We first opened our store in Peckham over 21 years ago and we are delighted to be able to open the store once again to deliver an enhanced shopping experience

for our existing and future customers.”

Customers at the revamped store will have an expanded sales area to provide more affordable produce.

Supermarket options around Peckham have been dwindling in recent months following the closures of the Old Kent Road Aldi and Rye Lane’s Asda.

Asda Peckham Lane closed in May after more than a decade of service. A deputy store manager said it was ‘ike losing a family’.

Old Kent Road’s Aldi packed up in August and will be replaced with 168 new homes - and a new Aldi.

In other supermarket news, in September, an archaeologist report revealed that Roman remains could be sitting just 60cm below the Lidl by Bricklayers Arms.

The new Lidl supermarket on Bellenden Road forms part of the company’s £1.3bn investment across the country in 2021 and 2022. It is now the sixth-largest supermarket chain in the UK.

Camberwell man charged with Islington murder

Mayor urged not to overturn council’s rejection of Bulky office block at elephant

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Camberwell man Juned Sheikh has been charged alongside a 30-year-old woman with the murder of a missing 63-year-old whose body has never been found.

Frank McKeever (pictured) was last seen on 28 August 2021 in Islington and has been presumed dead by police. Despite an extensive investigation and searches of various locations, his body has never been recovered.

Last Sunday, October, 23, Sheikh, of Haywood Street in Camberwell, was charged alongside 30-year-old Surie Suksiri, from Earlsferry Way, Islington, with the murder of Frank McKeever.

Both appeared in custody at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 24.

After an extensive investigation failed to find any trace of Frank, officers concluded that he had most likely come to serious harm.

Canals, lakes, open spaces, and various premises have been searched in a bid to

find him, and the Met offered a £20,000 reward for anyone with information of his whereabouts.

Police are continuing to appeal for information that may assist the investigation asking people to call 101 or tweet @MetCC and quote ref CAD 3224/13Nov21.

Life-saving bus coming to Peckham

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk The Mayor of London has been urged to respect Southwark Council’s decision to reject Lendlease’s proposal to build an office block on Elephant Park.

Southwark’s Planning Committee unanimously rejected the application for an 18-storey office on plot H1, for being “too bulky” on Tuesday, October 4.

The scheme, which sits on the site of the former Heygate Estate, has now been

referred to Sadiq Khan. He can choose to either ‘stand’ the decision or ‘call it in’, meaning he gets the final say.

Harpreet Aujla of the Southwark Law Centre (SLC), which wrote to the Mayor to express its concerns, said: “‘As the letter sent outlines, we hope the decision of Southwark’s planning committee and the local democratic process stands.

“There were concerns raised about consultation, which need to be addressed, both around overturning the Outline Planning Permission Lendlease already holds for Elephant Park, which was extensively consulted on, and around seeking public engagement on the new plans, which was not done adequately for this new planning application’” Although councillors on the planning committee were told not to consider the block’s ‘lack of housing’ as a factor, it was a recurring theme throughout the application.

This is because the demolished Heygate Estate, the site of the Elephant Park development, had 1,200 council homes.

Elephant Park will have 2,689 homes but just 92 will be let at a social rate.

The H1 development was also originally earmarked as being a ‘residentialled’ building but Lendlease changed it to offices after it fulfilled its housing obligations elsewhere on the site.

Jerry Flynn of the 35% Campaign said:

“This application was resoundingly rejected by Southwark’s planning committee. Whatever Lendlease might say, we need housing on H1, not offices.”

Objectors had also expressed concern about the new ‘health hub’, proposed for the bottom floor of the building.

Few question the need for improved health facilities in the area but there are fears that the new health hub could cause the closure of the Princess Street and Manor Place surgeries.

In a letter from Lendlease to Southwark Council, the property developer has previously said the Health Hub would “serve the population at Elephant & Castle and the existing people currently served by the Princess Street and Manor Place GP Surgeries”.

SLC’s letter to the Mayor says that ‘would have impacts for health care delivery for the whole of Walworth, which were not properly addressed by the application.’

If Kahn does overturn Southwark Council’s original decision, it wouldn’t be the first time. In June, he pushed ahead plans to build a 20-storey building as part of the SC1 Life Science and Innovation District.

The council had rejected the application in June 2020 for its height and overshadowing effect on nearby housing and heritage sites.

The victim had to be rushed to hospital after the trio punched and kicked him in the face, before stealing his mobile phone as he walked along Dagmar Road, just off Peckham Road at around 00:50 on Sunday morning, October 23.

The victim has since been discharged from hospital after being treated for facial injuries.

The suspects are all described as black and were wearing balaclavas. They were last seen heading in the direction of Peckham Road.

Detectives would like to speak with anyone who saw or heard the attack.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A life-saving bus touring the UK to check people for heart valve disease is coming to Peckham Square from 10am to 3pm on Tuesday, November 30.

Experts warn of a “ticking time bomb” of undiagnosed heart conditions after 73 per cent of cardiac clinicians reported fewer primary care referrals since the pandemic.

So far the bus has seen over 2,000 patients and astonishingly, a cardiac condition was detected in 10 per cent of people who had the stethoscope check.

Robert Fowler, 87, who visited the bus when it stopped in Leeds said: “I visited the bus in Leeds and after having some heart checks I was given a GP letter by the staff there and was referred to my local cardiology team.

“I needed to have a heart procedure called a transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). I had the procedure on February 3 and I’ve since been checked over and my readings look good.

“I’m doing daily exercises, taking days out with my wife and no funny turns. I feel so lucky, as had I not got on the bus my heart problem could have progressed to a stroke or heart attack.”

People who have abnormalities detected will be given a letter addressed

to their GP recommending they be referred to their local cardiology department.

Heart valve disease is when one or more of the valves in the heart aren’t working properly, disrupting blood flow to the rest of the body.

Symptoms include shortness of breath, lightheadedness, and feeling fatigued beyond your years. It is believed to affect 1.5 million over 65s in the UK and as many as 225,000 in London.

Professor Phil MacCarthy, consultant cardiologist at King’s College Hospital, said: “The drop in heart valve disease diagnosis since the start of Covid-19 is very concerning for health systems across the country, especially in London where preventing cardiovascular diseases is a key priority for the NHS. “That’s why initiatives to improve detection are so important. We are well placed to treat those patients, with seven centres providing minimally invasive TAVI services based in London.”

Severe aortic stenosis is the most common form of the disease amongst over 65s. Although serious, it is easily treated once detected.

The bus tour has been organised by Heart Valve Voice, a UK-based heart disease charity established in 2014.

For those who can’t reach the bus, Heart Valve Voice is campaigning for the NHS to perform regular stethoscope checks for the over 65s.

‘Callous’ Surrey Quays couple who exploited a 13-year-old boy to run drugs have been jailed

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A “callous couple” who made a 13-year-old boy shift crack and heroin between London and Kent from their Surrey Quays flat have been jailed.

When police burst in on the duo in September 2020, they discovered them lounging around on a bed made from two sofas pushed together, from which they conducted their business.

Devon McCallum, 28 and Nardia Seedat, 27, of Water Gardens Square, off Surrey Quays Road, were sentenced to a combined twelve years on 21 October.

A two-week trial at Inner London Crown Court, found the pair guilty of charges including conspiracy to supply heroin and crack cocaine. Seedat was also found guilty of possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply.

Detective Superintendent Gareth Williams, BTP’s County Lines Taskforce lead, said: “Sadly, it is not uncommon for drug suppliers to use children to transport drugs on the railway.

“The 13-year-old boy my team successfully safeguarded is the youngest we’ve encountered being exploited – we routinely come across teenagers in our work.

“McCallum and Seedat are a callous pair of criminals who controlled a child for their own financial gain. I hope their adequately strong sentences serve as a stark warning to offenders – we will catch you and put you behind bars.”

A judge sentenced McCallum to nine years’ imprisonment, and Seedat to three years and six months.

Data downloaded from the phone showed calls and texts from a contact saved as ‘SYK’, ordering the child to take the 4.55pm train from Deptford to Rochester on that day. Police said it later emerged that ‘SYK’ was McCallum.

Communication data from cell sites found the two numbers were in constant contact with the 13-year-

old’s phone throughout September as he travelled between London and Kent.

Police tracked the cell data to the Surrey Quays property, executed a search warrant, and discovered McCallum and Seedat asleep on their makeshift bed, on 25 September 2020.

They seized three mobile phones, including two handsets and arrested the duo.

Police discovered that McCallum

had been on an electronic tag curfew, requiring him to be at the address between the hours of 9pm and 7am.

In interviews with police, McCallum tried to distance himself from the Surrey Quays address, saying his friend let him stay there and “lots of people come and go”.

Seedat, who was found in police custody to be concealing 14 wraps of heroin and one of crack cocaine,

responded “no comment” to all questions put to her during an interview. But police said just before its conclusion she stated, “I’m not involved in trafficking”.

Detective Superintendent Gareth Williams said: “If you spot the signs of child exploitation on the railway network, I urge you to report it to us by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40. No report is too small or too trivial.”

There’s still time to consult on plans for Canada Water ‘Park and Pavilion’

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Developer British Land is inviting people to give feedback on their plans to build a 3.5 acre park as part of the Canada Water Masterplan.

Outline planning permission, which determines the size and functions of the space, has already been approved but the finer details could be subject to local input.

New plans are to be submitted to the council later this autumn and works on the park and pavilion should begin in the summer of 2025. People have until Monday, October 31 to submit feedback.

In its brochure, British Land has said: “We want the park to be a valuable space for the community to use, as well as a space that encourages and supports social interaction and cohesion.

“It is important that the park and pavilion are inclusive and accessible spaces for everyone, regardless of age or ability, to experience and enjoy.”

The park will cover a patch currently occupied by the Surrey Quays Leisure

Park and the Printworks.

The final designs are likely to include gardens, open space, woodland, an adventure playground and a pavilion building with a cafe and toilets.

It is hoped that the pavilion building will be a useful community space and act as a landmark for people using the park.

British Land says its current designs respond to feedback received in previous consultations, including wild gardens and references to the area’s industrial heritage.

The £3.3bn Canada Water Masterplan, which also has outline planning permission, will bring 3,500 homes, new offices and leisure spaces to the site.

The Canada Water Masterplan has been criticised by campaigning and residents’ groups over fears the scheme will lead to overcrowding, overdevelopment, loss of green space and mature trees, and a lack of truly affordable homes. Across the whole redevelopment, at least 35 per cent are earmarked as ‘affordable’.

cathedral Becomes ‘A MINI LOURDES’

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Thousands of pilgrims have been descending on St George’s Cathedral to glimpse the relics of St Bernadette.

The relics, fragments of kneecap, muscle, hair and ribs from the venerated saint, famous for her association with Lourdes, were displayed at the cathedral from Wednesday, October 19 until Thursday, October, 20.

Housed in a 70cm, 24-carat gold church-shaped vessel, also known as a reliquary, they have travelled all the way from the upper basilica at the French Pyrenean Shrine of Lourdes, France.

Father Michael Branch, Dean of St George’s Cathedral, said: “It’s such a great privilege because Lourdes is a great place where everyone is made to feel very special.

“It’s almost as if we’ve become a miniLourdes. That peace and healing and profound sense of love has been brought to our cathedral here.”

St Bernadette, born Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, southwest France, in 1844, was a French peasant, and the eldest of nine.

Many Christians believe that between February and July 1858, she experienced a series of visions of the Virgin Mary at the Grotto of Massabielle in France.

Nowadays, every year, six million people visit the sacred site, many believing that by bathing in its waters, they will be cured of ailments both medical and spiritual.

‘Pungent fumes’ that filled shop lead to drug arrests and police hospitalised Exclusive

He said hosting the relics is part of Metropolitan Archbishop of Southwark John Wilson’s evangelising mission, demonstrating that the faith “is not a closed shop but that we’re open to everyone”.

The maps put the school at the centre, and colour code the surrounding area to show where is within walking and cycling distance.

Designed by the council’s sustainable travel team, they are large, waterproof, and can be displayed anywhere.

Sarah Parch, headteacher at Galleywall School, Bermondsey, said: “Our Walk to School Month and the use of Southwark’s walking maps have supported children in walking to school, meaning less traffic on the roads and helping provide cleaner and safer streets for our families.”

Historic lodge in Nunhead Cemetery set to be restored

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A historic lodge in Nunhead Cemetery, built in the mid-1800s, is set to be restored thanks to a £100,000 grant from The National Lottery Fund.

The Grade-II Listed East Lodge, considered ‘at risk’ by Historic England since 1988, has been in a state of decay and clad in scaffolding, for the last thirty years.

The building will be fitted with a new cafe, community space, and become a base for Friends of Nunhead Cemetery, while retaining its original external design.

Jeremy Partington, Chair of Trustees at Friends of Nunhead Cemetery (FONC), added: “This grant will enable the realisation of FONC’s forty-year aspiration to see the East Lodge restored for community use and to further promote the heritage and ecological importance of this wonderful Victorian landscape for contemporary enjoyment.”

The restored building will have insulation, air-source heat pumps, bespoke innovations like re-using the chimneys for ventilation, and traditional Victorian awnings.

It is hoped that the building will become a “welcome gateway” to the 52-acre cemetery, the largest of the ‘magnificent seven’ cemeteries established in London between 1832 and 1841.

The cemetery retains its original layout and character, featuring over 44,000 memorials and is the final resting place for roughly 290,000 people.

Among those graves is the Carrara marble memorial to the nine Walworth scouts who drowned off the coast of Sheppey while on an expedition in 1912.

A host of other famous Victorian figures are buried there including bus tycoon Thomas Tilling, writer William Brough and Sir Frederick Abel, the co-inventor of cordite.

The other six ‘magnificent cemeteries’ include Highgate Cemetery, Abney Park Cemetery, Brompton Cemetery, Tower Hamlets Cemetery, Kensal Green Cemetery and West Norwood Cemetery.

Cllr Catherine Rose, Cabinet Member for Parks, Streets & Clean Air, said: “Working with the local community, we are putting Nunhead Cemetery on the map as a leafy oasis steeped in history that is accessible to everyone.

“Restoring the East Lodge and opening it up to the community is an important part of the puzzle, so we are delighted to have the support of the Heritage Fund.”

Southwark Council says the new funding will help it progress its plans to apply for a full Heritage Fund grant at a later date.

The restoration is followed by the news that a new role is being created to lead events for local residents, including oral history sessions, exhibitions and art events.

Top green columnist slams Aylesbury regen as ‘climate disaster’ Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A renowned climate columnist has slammed Southwark’s planning department after realising new buildings on the Aylesbury Estate are facing the wrong way to use solar panels.

Southwark Council does not deny this oversight but insists the development is compliant with all its environmental planning policies.

In the ‘90s, Donnachadh McCarthy was a councillor for Faraday ward, which includes the Aylesbury Estate. Now an outspoken climate journalist, and previously a longrunning columnist for the News, he is “heartbroken” by the blocks being built on the ‘First Development Site’ just west of Portland Street.

He says the development can never accommodate solar panels and pushes up too close to Albany Road, meaning there will never be space for trees or a protected cycle lane. “It’s so frustrating. When I come here nowadays I face away so I don’t have to look at it. I spent twenty years of my life trying to keep this a habitable place, and for what?”

Donnachadh, who has been arrested multiple times for his climate activism, points out that the southernmost block is taller than those behind it.

This means that when the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, the buildings

behind the tallest one will be cast in shadow.

So any solar panels installed on these smaller blocks would be totally useless.

At least one block also has its roof slanted northward, away from the sun.

Casting his mind back to his days as a councillor, Donnachadh said: “I attended workshops and saw kids draw what they wanted the Aylesbury Estate to look like.

“Kids were drawing pictures of solar panels on the estate and it breaks my heart that twenty years later we’re building a new Aylesbury Estate with no solar panels. The planning department is still so neanderthal.”

The buildings also push up right onto the Albany Road pavement, leaving no space for a protected cycle lane.

In the ‘90s, Donna says he passed a motion that said all new development should facilitate cycling infrastructure, but the passage of time appears to have swept this policy under the carpet.

The only way of accommodating a cycle lane would be to make Albany Road one way, an unlikely prospect given it’s a vital connection to Old Kent Road.

Cyclists and pedestrians in Southwark baked during last summer’s heatwave, as temperatures soared to a sweltering 38 degrees.

But Donnachadh points out that there is no space for trees that would help shade Albany Road. Research has shown that urban trees can reduce ground temperatures by up to six degrees.

The Aylesbury Estate redevelopment

was approved in 2015. Even back then, Southwark Council and the Mayor of London’s planning policies made provisions for solar panels, trees and cycle lanes.

The 2011 Southwark Plan said that trees “help tackle climate change by cooling areas” and that new developments should be built “to high environmental standards”.

The Mayor of London’s 2011 London Plan, approved under Boris Johnson, said new buildings should be orientated “to maximise solar gain”.

The Mayor’s Office did not comment, saying: “The planning application was considered and agreed by a previous Deputy Mayor working for the previous Mayor.”

Councillor Darren Merrill, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, said the council took environmental sustainability “extremely seriously”. He said: “The Aylesbury First Development Site was compliant with our environmental planning policies as they were at the time the application was considered in 2015. We already dedicated land in the designs for a cycle hire space, and created a cycling ‘Quietway’ route linking the First Development Site from Burgess Park. The designs also included a combined heat and power plant (CHP) which will reduce carbon emissions associated with the development by 32 per cent.”

He added that the designs and planning applications for the wider Aylesbury Estate built on this legacy of sustainability.

When completed in spring 2025, Barratt London’s ‘Bermondsey Heights’ development at 227 to 255 Ilderton Road will comprise 253 residential apartments, of which 76 are affordable An online article recently published on financial news outlet Zawya suggested Middle-Eastern investors should take advantage of the pound’s recent crash and buy the apartments.

It said: “Favourable exchange rates for investors tied to the US Dollar are creating significant savings for those looking at the London real estate market”.

Describing Bermondsey’s southeast London’s “hidden gem”, it said the area’s house prices were expected to rise by “around 25 per cent over the next five years”.

The apartments’ prices were advertised in United Arab Emirates Dirham, with one-bedroom flats starting at AED2.4 million, equivalent to £577,382.

For those looking to buy or rent in Bermondsey, and already concerned by soaring mortgages and rents, this could be seen as yet another blow.

Research by the Royal Economic Society, an economic journal and charity, has shown that foreign investment tends to raise house prices and push local residents out of the market.

A spokesperson for affordable housing campaign group The 35% Campaign said: “What is good news for overseas investors and Barretts is bad news for all the people and families in Bermondsey who are

desperate for a decent place to live, but cannot find anywhere they can afford, either to rent or buy. Southwark Council is promoting the Old Kent Road regeneration as something that will benefit local people; Barretts’ statement tells a different story – regeneration is first and foremost about profit and keeping property values high, not about building homes that people can afford.”

Rising house prices in Southwark are already causing an exodus from the borough, which has contributed to the borough’s schools’ admissions crisis.

The Labour Party has previously pledged to cap the number of flats foreign investors are able to buy.

At the 2021 party conference in Brighton, then shadow secretary for housing Lucy Powell said Labour would change planning rules so half of the homes in new developments cannot be sold to foreign investors.

Locals invited to meeting on the future of Old Kent Road

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk People living in and around Old Kent Road are invited to a public meeting on Saturday, 29 October, to discuss what the future holds for the area.

It will be a chance to discuss how the cost-of-living crisis, and the increasing unlikelihood of the Bakerloo Line Extension, will impact ongoing and planned developments.

Planning advocacy group The Planning Voice Project, who are supporting the meeting held by the Old Kent Road Community Campaign (OKRCC) have said: “OKRCC have been in regular contact with Southwark Council over the ongoing Old Kent Road regeneration plans.

“At the meeting, we will be updating you all on where we are and asking where is ‘Plan B’ for the Old Kent Road now that the Bakerloo Line extension has been mothballed by TfL. “We will also be looking at the impact of rising costs in the construction industry and the stalled regeneration plans for the area.”

On October 18, the Council’s Cabinet considered a paper on the ‘Local

Development Scheme’, which set out time frames for agreeing upcoming policies.

These policies will help dictate future developments’ residential design standards, environmental standards and affordable housing and workspace commitments.

At the meeting, representatives will discuss the implications of these policies, and how people can ensure their voices are heard over the coming months and years.

The meeting is on October 29, 2022, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm at at Christ Church Peckham, 676-680 Old Kent Road SE15 1JF. It is held by the Planning Voice Project and OKR Community Campaign.

Dulwich College wins social mobility award

Presented at the Independent School Magazine’s Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, October 11, the award recognises independent schools that ensure pupils “can fulfil aspirational choices despite their socio-economic background”.

Independent schools, otherwise known as private schools, don’t have to follow the national curriculum and charge fees instead of receiving government funding.

A spokesperson for Dulwich College said: “Dulwich College is delighted to have been awarded winner of this year’s Independent School Magazine’s Independent School of the Year Award 2022 for Contribution to Social Mobility.

“Dulwich College is, and has been since its foundation in 1619, committed to helping academicallytalented disadvantaged students from the local community achieve their potential.”

Every year, the school awards bursaries to 200 pupils from in and around Southwark, worth over £4 million in total.

148 of those students have between 75 and 100 per cent of their fees paid for, which would cost up to £47,949 annually for full boarders. The school has more than doubled its spending on bursaries since 2013.

Four bursary recipients from the 2021 leavers cohort went on to study at Oxbridge, studying Aeronautical Engineering, Classics, Medicine, Psychology, Mathematics and Economics.

There was also Peter who secured an apprenticeship at KPMG and Nkem, who is now reading Computer Engineering and Economics at the University of Pennsylvania.

Nkem said: “During my time at Dulwich College I have met some incredible people who encouraged me to work hard and aim high.

Thanks to their support, I fulfilled one of the biggest dreams of my life.”

Southwark Council is the ‘eighth most complained about in UK’

The data, gathered in a report by Claims.co.uk, shows that the Local Government Ombudsman received 32.2 complaints about Southwark per 100,000 people between 2016 and 2022. This was surpassed by neighbouring Lambeth which, in second place, had 44.7 complaints per 100,000.

It is worth noting that of the top ten most complained about councils, eight were London-based, arguably demonstrating the unique challenges faced by the capital’s local authorities.

One of those unique challenges is housing. Southwark is the country’s biggest social landlord, with a

deteriorating housing stock and a housing waiting list of over 16,000.

London Councils, a cross-party organisation representing the capital’s 32 boroughs has said London is the “epicentre” of Britain’s housing crisis.

Cllr Darren Rodwell, London Councils’ Executive Member for Housing & Planning, said: “London is the epicentre of the housing crisis. The longstanding shortage of social housing in the capital has driven up pressures and is the fundamental factor behind London’s appalling homelessness rates “Boroughs are determined to turn this situation around, but for too long we’ve lacked the resources required to build housing at a mass scale. Giving boroughs these resources is crucial for tackling homelessness and will be a major boost to the post-pandemic economic recovery. We’re urging ministers to listen to councils and use the Spending Review to help us deliver

Partnering with Carers Trust, a charity for unpaid carers, Bloom & Wild said: “It’s always nice to know that others care about us. Living in an area that cares about its residents can do wonders for everyone’s wellbeing, especially those who may not have the same opportunities as everyone else, such as young carers.”

by Lambeth in second place, which scored highly on social support, and Ealing in third place.

Southwark scored particularly well in mental health support because of its range of outdoor gym and sports spaces.

It was also found to have a large number of social farms and

community gardens that encourage residents to become more socially and sustainably conscious.

This somewhat contradicts a previous study, that said Southwark was one of the worst parts of London for accessing green spaces.

The report by environmental group Friends of the Earth used Office for National Statistics and Natural England data to rank local authorities for the amount of green space within a five minutes walk of residents.

Southwark was ranked eighthlowest of all local authorities in the UK, and the fifth-worst in London behind Lambeth, Tower Hamlets, Haringey and Newham.

For all those authorities, housing was the most common complaint, except in Barking and Dagenham, where it was highways and transport, and Hounslow, where it was benefits and welfare.

Out of all the London councils, complaints about Southwark were the seventh most likely to be upheld (70.44%). Complaints are upheld when the service provided did not reach a reasonable standard.

A London Councils spokesperson said: “Boroughs in the capital are responsible for a greater range of services than local authorities in other parts of the country.

Although London boroughs always strive to deliver the best possible

service to their residents, we expect this distinction in levels of service provision explains the difference in the relative number of complaints.”

Leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrats Cllr Victor Chamberlain waded in saying: “These findings just confirm what we already knew – that Labour is not delivering for the people of this borough. The fact that so many people feel so let down by the council to the point they have to complain is emblematic of Labour’s poor record.

“It is no surprise that housing is the main source of complaints. Our borough has a disrepair crisis that Labour refuses to deal with and a social housing waiting list that Labour has done nothing to reduce. The Southwark Liberal Democrats join the residents who have complained in demanding better.”

Southwark has been crowned London’s ‘most caring’ borough

Flower delivery service ‘Bloom & Wild’ gathered data on the availability of community centres, mental health support, and ecoprojects across different London boroughs.

It found that Southwark was the fourth-best borough for social isolation support, third for community gardens and the best for mental health support.

When the next general election comes I am ready and eager to stand again

T

he Tories took months to remove the lawbreaker Johnson from office. Then, when the cost-of-living crisis was building, they spent months picking their next leader: Truss.

She was apparently the best the Tories had to offer after twelve years in Government. Forty-four days later she was gone. Just over six weeks. That’s all the time she had in Downing Street. But the damage the Tories allowed her to do will last years.

Her mini-Budget wrecked the UK economy and damaged our country’s reputation for fiscal responsibility. After the damage of Brexit and covid, the Tories needed to be especially careful with the economy, but they allowed Truss to sack the chief civil servant in the Treasury and gag the Office for Budget Responsibility, when the clue is in its name for goodness sake!

The Tories’ irresponsible Budget plans were withheld from the Bank of England which then had to put up £65 billion for buying back Government debt to stop people losing their hard-earned pensions.

The fallout from this avoidable economic hari-kari put up the cost of Government borrowing which our children and grandchildren will now shoulder for decades.

In Southwark, an estimated 8,000 people already face higher mortgage payments.

The Budget also crashed our currency which means fuel and food have become even more expensive too.

This was all avoidable and is all because of the political choice of the Tories: they chose Truss and they chose to back her Budget, as did the Daily Mail which called it “a true Tory Budget”.

He is out of touch even before you recall his Green Card to live in the United States and the tax affairs of his wife. The Tories have imposed this millionaire as their fifth Prime Minister after twelve years in power, as most people worry about routine bills.

It is hard to see any benefit for Southwark in the last twelve years of Tory Government, including with Clegg and the Lib Dems for five.

How to face the mess we’re in?

Change to an ethical pension A - it took me ten minutes. tax cut for the extremely rich, nothing for health or education, and nature across Britain put in danger.

The government’s mini-budget showed an utter lack of care for fellow human beings and for the ecosystems of water, air and soil that we all depend on.

I was left reeling and hopeless.

The events of recent weeks have hardly improved matters. So a book called Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We’re in… caught my eye.

Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone describe ‘active hope’ as something you do, rather than have. They don’t divide us into ‘activists’ and ‘ordinary people’. They say we’re all already in a turning world. They ask: ‘What are you turning away from because you know it causes harm?

What are you turning toward because it aligns more strongly with your values and hopes for our future?’ Three examples come to mind.

Members of my union have produced a leaflet that explains how to change to an ethical pension. They say that this is one of the most powerful actions an individual can take. I’ve already ‘turned away’ from oil companies by moving my own pension. (It

Through Southwark Council, the trikes are free to use for two hours at a time. They’re fun to ride and thanks to the actions of all these partners, I can ‘turn towards’ something that’s part of my vision of the future – a network of clean,

And three, I’m planning to go to a Repair Café. Our next local one is at The Green community centre in Nunhead on 29 October, 10-1. Expert volunteers mend toasters, computers, clothes and toys – and pass on their skills.

It’s an invitation to turn away from waste and the pressure to buy new stuff and turn towards community and skills, and is part of an international repair movement.

My gloom has lifted a little.

There’s still room for us all to make repairs.

I am ready and eager to stand again to represent the amazing local community I am proud to serve. After seven years in opposition, I am hopeful now for the chance to deliver with a Labour Government which has a focus on the real challenges Southwark and our whole country face.

CPZ confusion needs innovative thinking W

hile many people living in Bermondsey would like to see the back of Controlled Parking Zone G (CPZ), this seems unlikely to happen any time soon.

CPZs are seen by both Southwark Council and the Mayor of London as a good way of discouraging car use while encouraging active modes of transport.

And because conditions around CPZ G, such as the cost of permits, were ratified as recently as last February, there doesn’t appear to be any political will to review the scheme in the near future. At the North Bermondsey Ward meeting, a council officer admitted it’s “not a priority”.

So, if we are forced to retain the CPZ for now, the question should surely be how we can make sure it benefits everyone. After all, the current situation is unacceptable.

Residents have told the News of residents’ bays lying empty for hours and sometimes days on end. They say that’s not because people don’t want to park there, but because so few people know how to get a permit.

As a result, carers have reportedly struggled to access their patients. In other instances, mums say they have been forced to leave young children alone at home while they search for a parking space where they won’t get charged.

There is also the issue that some people live in blocks where they can’t apply for residents’ parking permits because they live in car-free developments.

This is all well and good if you’ve consciously decided to live on such an estate. But if you’ve been decanted from the Aylesbury, for example, and forced to live elsewhere, it hardly seems fair that you’d suddenly be denied use of your car through no fault of your own.

The time has come for Southwark Council to realise that the scheme is too inflexible and clunky. The online interface for getting a permit is clearly too complicated for many.

So we need innovative solutions. The central issue is digital isolation, meaning elderly people struggle to sign up for permits online. The council already directs elderly people to drop-in sessions where they can get help with their benefits. Why not provide assistance with parking permits at the same time?

And if permit-holders are forcibly moved to estates that don’t allow permits, an exception should be made which allows them to apply for permits, regardless of the development’s stipulations.

The Scrooge of Peckham This impressive festive family show blends storytelling, dance and song with an original music score by Jordan Xavier featuring rap, RnB, hip hop and funk.

Playwright and actor Geoffrey Aymer Aymer reunites with Theatre Peckham’s Artistic Director Suzann McLean to present a refreshed and entertaining allegorical tale that will deeply resonate with audiences across London.

As is Theatre Peckham’s tradition, it will be an inspiring mix of professional actors and young people from their Academy.

KM Drew Boateng, fresh from the national tour of The Colour Purple, is cast in the lead role as Ebony Scrooge, while Tomi Egbowon-Ogunjobi, whose screen credits include Netflix’s hit

show Sex Education and ITV’s hotly anticipated drama Riches by Abby Ajayi, plays Scrooge’s business partner Marlene Jacobs. The professional cast also includes Ellie Clayton in the role of Chris Prezzie, Ellie can most recently be seen in CBBC’s So Awkward; Siphiwo Mahlentle as the Original Gangsta Duppy, Siphiwo graduated from drama school, Art’s Educational, in July 2022, and former Theatre Peckham member and Academy tutor Gustavo Silva playing a bunch of comedy roles.

In Aymer’s modern-day adaptation, this Scrooge has transformed from an elderly miser and money lender to a young go-getting, property developer and landlord. Themes of gentrification and the growing inequalities in society foreshadow the current cost of living crisis.

The iconic role of Tiny Tim is reinvented as Tyrese Crichlow, a part which will be played by Young Company

South London Women Artists (SLWA) is an acclaimed group of over 80 women who live and work in South London.

This month SLWA is showcasing the work of 18 women in their latest exhibition ‘Everyone Reflects Light’ to support this year’s theme for ‘making mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’.

Artists include: Helen Adie, Michelle Baharier, Pat Cove, Claire Dorey, Jo Gibbs, Julia de Greff, Sam Haynes, Elena Howard, Ekaterini Koliakou, Angele Lautier, Ky Lewis, Yoke Matze, Rachel Reid, Sonia Thomas, Veena Scialó, Mariona Ranera, Asia Nowicki and Maria Beddoes.

Baharier’s ‘How do I make you feel?’ is a beautiful coloured face yet juxtaposed by pain, she says “I painted it as it was how I felt when I opened the door to people bringing me food, as my partner had Covid before the first lockdown and was very ill.” She says she felt that she needed to put a black cross on her door and ring a bell, as in medieval times, to warn people.

Each artist interprets their world differently, exploring emotional states, often through their own lived experience, expressed with skill and liberating honesty, through painting, printmaking, photography and sculpture. Michelle Baharier, SLWA acting chair, said: “The exhibition brings a sense of optimism and resilience, with many artists offering bold statements in colour and form, as we move on from the pandemic, while others are still exploring the challenges of a difficult winter ahead.”

Some are curious, some are more familiar, and one is rather unexpected.

Thus a promising evening is poised to go beyond anyone’s expectations.

The world première of The Sex Party

by Terry Johnson similarly promises to surprise, perhaps shock, and most certainly entertain!

As a playwright, Terry Johnson’s work includes Dead Funny, Prism and Ken Insignificance, Cries from the Mammal House and Hysteria which won him Olivier Award for Best Comedy. His plays have won him the Playwright of the Year and Critics’ Circle Best New Play Award in 1995. The League of American Theatres and Producers Best Touring Play Awards 2001, plus two Evening Standard Theatre Awards, and others.

Peckham’s take on Charles Dickens’ immortal classic A Christmas Carol takes centre stage this December at Theatre Peckham.

Borough Market trader puts Iraqi food in the spotlight A Borough market trader who went from finance to food talks about bringing Iraqi cuisine and identity to the mainstream, writes Isabel Ramirez...

Phil Juma, 38, founder of Juma Kitchen, was born and raised in Wimbledon to an Iraqi father and an English-Irish mother.

On leaving university, he started a career in finance in the city.

“I was young, I was chasing money,” Phil Juma explained. But he said it wasn’t fulfilling. “The 2008 financial crash was the tip of the iceberg - after that, I resigned.”

With no plan, Phil said he ended up working for a small energy consultancy, where he was able to think about his real purpose. “I used to bring in Iraqi leftovers to the office – and they’d all tell me, you’re obsessed - they’d say: ‘I don’t know anyone whose more obsessed with food than you.’

What was a passion and part of his culture, quickly turned into an idea.

“At the time, Iraqi cuisine had no representation in the UK,” he said, “because of what was going on in the country, there was huge stigma around it.”

“I knew restaurants with Iraqi owners who were calling their food ‘Lebanese’ or simply ‘Middle-Eastern’ because they didn’t want the shame of what they thought calling themselves Iraqi would bring.”

“I wanted to change that.”

After working a string of jobs in kitchens, whilst still at his 9 to 5, he finally hosted a pop-up in 2013. “It was filled with friends and family – all biased, but it didn’t matter. I was hooked on how my food made people feel.”

“I used all my holiday from my job to work in high-end kitchens to get the most experience I could.”

When Phil had built up enough experience, in 2019 he opened Juma Kitchen at Borough Market, just before the

pandemic.

“It was hard but I just carried on working.”

Phil actually went viral with his ‘Dish of the Day’ for the NHS and his famous hummus and bread he hand-delivered across London. “I had to keep it going,” he told the News. “By the time I’m done here, everyone will know Iraqi food.”

Now he’s well known across the world for shining a light on Iraqi cuisine. “It’s mad how far we’ve come,” Phil added. Last year, he appeared on BBC One’s ‘Saturday Kitchen.’

“The whole Iraqi community tuned in,” he said. “These parents of an eight year old Iraqi girl told me they forced her to watch me on TV so she could grow up with representation.

“It’s always been more than food - but that was when it really hit home.

“I’ve done all of this independently, so it can be done.”

Phil is one of the many traders at Borough who have contributed to their new recipe book ‘Borough Market: The Knowledge.’

His addition was the three-cheese bourek which he said are “salty cheese wrapped in crispy filo pastry drizzled with honey.”

These aren’t on the menu at his stall, but Phil explained he wanted to add something accessible: “a lot of Iraqi cuisine is labourintensive, so I wanted to add something anyone can make!”

CONTROLLED PARKING ZONE ‘S’ AMENDMENTS

The London Borough of Southwark (Waiting restrictions) (Fenham Road and Furley Road) Order 2022 1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 27 October 2022 it has made the above Order under sections 6 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

2. The effects of the Order are to update the layout of existing ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions (double yellow lines) at the junction of Fenham Road and Furley Road, by extending existing ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions in:(a) FENHAM ROAD eastward of its junction with Furley Road, by 2.5 metres on the north side and by 1.5 metres on the south side; and (b) FURLEY ROAD east side, by 1.5 metres north-west of its junction with Fenham Road and by 2.5 metres south of its junction with Fenham Road.

Note: All measurements are in metres and are approximate.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE under sections 90A to 90I of the Highways Act 1980 and in accordance with the provisions of the Highways (Traffic calming) Regulations 1999, that it proposes to construct speed tables of flat-top construction having a maximum height of 100 millimetres and covering the entire width of the carriageway, in:(a) CHOUMERT ROAD extending from the eastern kerb-line build-out of Bellenden Road northeastward for a distance of 5.5 metres, including both ramps; and (b) DANBY STREET extending the north-western kerb-line build-out of Bellenden Road north-westward for a distance of 12 metres, including both ramps.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE that it proposes under section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the provision in BELLENDEN ROAD of a raised ‘zebra’ pedestrian crossing, the centre of which would be located at a point 10 metres south of the south-eastern kerb-line build-out of Choumert Road (as measured from the eastern side), the ‘controlled area’ (‘zig-zag’ markings on which vehicles would be prohibited from stopping at all times) would be laid on both sides of the carriageway for a distance of up to 8 metres north-east of and up to 16 metres south-west of this crossing.

Notes: (1) All measurements are in metres and are approximate. (2) The measures described in item 4 above would refresh and replace any existing traffic calming measure at that location. NOTES: (1) These Orders would supersede similar provisions at the above locations implemented by way of experimental Orders made under section 9 of the 1984 Act (which would be revoked). (2) Exemption to the restrictions described in (a) preceding would be provided for emergency services vehicles and for vehicles used for road maintenance, refuse collection or cleansing purposes; exceptions are provided for postal service, taxis and (on a discretionary basis) disabled persons vehicles (registered to Southwark resident ‘blue badge’ holders), rapid response healthcare workers vehicles and SEND vehicles. By Wilf MacDonnell at Champion Hill sports@southwarknews.co.uk PAUL BARNES hailed a “massive” victory after he took charge of his first game since his permanent appointment as Dulwich Hamlet beat fellow early season strugglers Hungerford Town 2-1 at Champion Hill on Saturday.

Nana Owusu gave the Hamlet the lead in the sixteenth minute before Danny Mills doubled the advantage 31 minutes in.

Niko Muir scored from the penalty spot with five minutes left but Dulwich hung on to claim the three points and move up to nineteenth in the National League South table.

“We’re going to make sure we’re on the front foot and we will take it to anyone that comes here,” Barnes told the News after the win.

Their approach was clear as they started in a fluid 4-3-3, the manager’s preferred formation since his appointment on an interim basis.

Just nine minutes in, Dulwich danger man Owusu rattled the bar from the edge of the box. Jayden Clarke had skipped by Hungerford midfielder George Smith, before laying the ball off Owusu for the strike.

Just over five minutes later the same two players combined to put the home side one 1-0 up. Clarke went on a jinking run from midfield and was brought down 25 yards out. Owusu stepped up to the free-kick and hit it with dip, the power on the strike proving to be too much for goalkeeper Tyla Dickinson who couldn’t get near it.

Despite a flurry of Hungerford set-pieces, it was the Hamlet who scored again. Some lovely free-flowing football saw Jack Holland play it wide to right-back Joe Felix. He looked inside and found George Porter who curled a delicate cross to the back post and from there on there was only going to be one winner as Mills climbed over his marker to head powerfully home.

It was so nearly three before the end of the half, but Clarke was denied oneon-one by Dickinson having run on to Mills’ flick-on.

Hungerford pulled one back in the 85th minute when Muir smashed in from the spot after Andre Blackman had given away the penalty.

Even with the three points, Barnes wasn’t overly impressed with his side’s performance. “To be honest,

I think from the standards we’ve set previously, I was a little bit disappointed that we didn’t meet them.

“So I was saying [it was] one of our worst performances which shows the standard we’re setting.”

Surrey’s Smith gets nod for development tour

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY’S JAMIE Smith has been selected as part of an England Lions fifteenplayer training group that is travelling to the United Arab Emirates next month.

Smith scored over 400 runs as Surrey retained the County Championship this year. That included a first double hundred against Gloucestershire.

Smith played for the England under-19 side in 2019 but this is his first call-up to the Lions.

The trip is intended for development purposes but also to support the senior side’s Test preparation for Pakistan. Five members of that squad will arrive

ahead of the Test tour and three pace bowlers will join the group as they continue their recoveries from injuries.

England will travel to Abu Dhabi on November 18 and will play a three-day practice match against England Lions from November 23-25.

ECB performance director Mo Bobat explained the selection process for the Lions. He said: “It’s great to be able to recommence Lions developmental experiences and the camp in Dubai and Abu Dhabi represents a fantastic opportunity for a high-potential group of players.

“While we aim to ensure that Lions opportunities are closely aligned to England’s future needs, we also try to be as individualised

as possible with our player programming. Selection for the camp was conducted in close collaboration with both players and counties, and there are a number of players that have been encouraged and supported to take up other opportunities at home and overseas.

“The camp also supports the England Men’s team in their preparation for Pakistan, allowing England and Lions players to work closely together in overseas conditions.”

Meanwhile, Surrey stars Sam Curran, Chris Jordan and Jason Roy have been named in the England fifteen-man squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia that starts in November.

By Jeff Burnige at St Paul’s sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIONESSES advanced to the first round proper of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup with this impressive 7-0 victory over Long Crendon at St Paul’s last Sunday.

This was the first time they had reached this stage since the administrative relegation imposed by the FA in 2019, and they were rewarded on Monday with a home draw against National League Gillingham.

This match was notable for a fourgoal haul for midfielder Maisie Joyce, who scored the first two goals early on to set the Lionesses on their way.

The first followed an amazing run from Angel Reid, and the second from

a tap-in after her penalty was saved.

The third was a stunning goal from the brilliant Otesha Charles, and just before the interval she added her second to make it 4-0.

It was not long into the second half when Joyce completed her hat-trick and then she got her fourth, both from corners by Jade Keogh.

Millwall were playing some great attacking football, and were able to bring on three substitutes in Hope Welsh, Lucy Jellett and Ella Bailey.

Keogh completed the scoring with a curling 35-yard free-kick.

Manager Jack Wheeler and several players are looking forward to playing against their former club in the next round, and they are in great form having recorded seven wins on the trot.

“The girls put in another real professional performance,” Wheeler said. “Long Crendon made life difficult being very competitive, especially in the first half. But, I’m really happy with the performance of the team, especially seeing things we have worked on in training in the last few weeks coming out in the game.

“We are really pleased as staff and players. The club has a lot of history in this competition and it’s important to us as a club that we do well in this competition. Hopefully we can continue this positive Cup run.

After the kick-off was delayed while fox dirt was removed from the pitch, Mary Phillip’s side immediately imposed themselves on the game and after going close several times took the lead in the fifteenth minute. Camilo Andres Nieva surged down the right and sent over a cross for David Gabor to finish.

The visitors were dealt another blow when their goalkeeper was injured and an outfield player had to take his place.

Peckham continued to pile on the pressure and doubled their lead two minutes into first-half added-time when Nicky Meta cut in from the left before curling home brilliantly from 25 yards.

Phillip had to make a change as Kai Smith-Reason was forced off with an injury with new signing Togba Tarpeh coming on.

There was still time for more drama in the opening period as Peckham made it

3-0 with Gabor getting his second in the seventh minute of added-time.

Peckham stopper George Legg was forced into a rare save before Gabor went off to a standing ovation in front of 140 at The Menace Arena.

Sarpong does the trick for Fisher

It was just the second win in the league this season for Ajay Ashanike’s side and it was thanks to a superb Michael Sarpong hat-trick.

The Fish’s victory came in remarkable circumstances as after falling 1-0 behind they were then reduced to ten men when German Petrov was sent off for handball. But Justice Owusu saved the resulting spot-kick.

The visitors equalised in the 35th minute when Sarpong finished at the back post from Cedric Nganga’s cross.

Fisher made it 2-1 just before halftime and it was Sarpong again, this time set up by Luke Thomas who was making his 100th appearance for the club.

Sarpong completed his hat-trick in style with an incredible goal as he scored from inside his own half.

The win lifted the Fish from 20th to eighteenth in the table.

Meanwhile, Fisher’s game against AFC Stoneham in the first round of the FA Vase has been ordered to be replayed because of a bizarre error.

Fisher explained: “In the 88th minute of our FA Vase tie against AFC Stoneham, an opposition player was sin-binned for dissent. With the tie level at full-time the referee mistakenly did not allow the player to take part in the penalty shootout which we won 5-3.

“AFC Stoneham lodged a complaint against the result based on these events and the Football Association have instructed us to replay the tie.”

That game takes place this Saturday. Kick-off at Stoneham is 3pm.

It means Fisher’s league game and community day against Sutton Athletic has been postponed.

MILLWALL SECURED their fourth successive win by beating West Brom 2-1 at The Den.

The Lions faced former forward Jed Wallace, who returned to SE16 for the first time since completing his free transfer to the Baggies over the summer.

He posted a tweet in the build-up to the match saying that he expected ‘90 minutes of dogs abuse… followed by a little clap after the game’ [sic], which is exactly what he received. From the very first minute, Wallace was booed every time he touched the ball, albeit that he had the least touches [34] of any outfield player to play the full game.

The booing quickly subsided as Millwall looked to find the back of the net inside the opening 20 seconds of the match. Billy Mitchell was presented with a chance to take aim from the edge of the box, but his shot deflected out for a corner which the hosts failed to convert from.

Both sides went on to create chances without really threatening. The Baggies looked to capitalise on a poor pass from Tom Bradshaw but Adam Reach failed to test George Long. Down the other end, Zian Flemming fired a volley into the gloves of Alex Palmer, but the flag went up for offside.

His replacement, Charlie Cresswell, created the first chance of the second half, shrugging past Adam Reach and setting up Tom Bradshaw with a beautiful cross. However, the striker was unable to build on his midweek hat-trick, firing wide from point-blank range.

It set the tone for the rest of the match. West Brom created next to nothing and looked to sit back in order to preserve their point. Gary Rowett brought on Tyler Burey in an attempt to pick the metaphorical lock, which it looked like he was able to do with 20 minutes left to play.

After narrowly missing a fantastic effort from the left flank, the winger scored from a near-identical position soon after, sending The Den into raptures. However, the offside flag ruined the moment, ruling out Burey’s sensational strike.

The 21-year-old was clearly frustrated and seemed determined to bag his first goal of the season.

As the tempo started to fizzle out, Millwall were presented with a golden opportunity as Kyle Bartley picked up a second yellow card for pulling back substitute Benik Afobe on the counter.

Lions aiming for second away win to establish themselves as promotion contenders

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk HUDDERSFIELD TOWN may be the ultimate banana skin in the Championship at the moment.

The Terriers have had an atrocious start to the campaign, sitting at the bottom of the table with just twelve points from fifteen games. They’ve only won one of their last six matches and fans are concerned that they may soon be cut adrift from the rest of the relegation contenders.

However, it’s important not to forget that Huddersfield were last season’s beaten play-off finalists. While they’ve lost a lot of key players, they’ve managed to keep the core of their squad over the summer. Manager Carlos Corberan departed almost immediately after they failed to reach the Premier League while his replacement, Danny Schofield, didn’t last much longer.

Now the responsibility belongs to Mark

Fotheringham, who moved to the John Smith’s Stadium in September after a stint in Germany where he worked as assistant manager to Felix Magath at Hertha Berlin.

Results haven’t drastically improved overnight, but the new boss has come in with a much stricter approach than his predecessors. He isn’t afraid to upset anybody, which might be the attitude that the Terriers need to get them up the league table.

It presents Millwall with quite a difficult situation. On paper, the Lions should easily win in West Yorkshire this weekend. Their record is much better than Huddersfield’s and their recent performances back it up too, especially having beaten some of the strongest teams in the division in recent weeks.

However, complacency can be a killer in the Championship and manager Gary Rowett is determined to give their upcoming opponents all the credit that they deserve.

“You can’t forget they’ve got a new manager who has come in with new ideas, having worked in Germany,” he told the News.

“I’m sure it won’t feel like Huddersfield are bottom of the league. It’ll feel like they’ve got a new manager in charge, it’ll feel like they’re one home result away from kick-starting their season.

“They’ve had some good results since he’s come in, some tough away points.

I’m sure they’ve shown signs of real improvement.

“For us, it will never be any different.

It’ll be about us focusing on what we can control, which is our own performance, and we’ll treat Huddersfield exactly like we treated Watford and exactly like we treated West Brom, with great respect that we’ve got to go and play really well to get a result.”

Millwall will have the chance to prove that their run of poor away form has finally come to an end by recording consecutive victories on the road for the

first time since the start of March. If they do pick up maximum points on Saturday afternoon, they will move up to fourth in the table should Swansea City and Sheffield United fail to beat Bristol City and West Brom respectively.

Rowett is adamant that he isn’t looking at the Lions’ position this early in the campaign, but there’s no denying that this patch of impressive form has boosted the confidence of the players and given the supporters a reason to follow the team across the country in the coming weeks.

Millwall will be without three players for their trip up north, with Ryan Leonard [hamstring], Murray Wallace [groin] and Shaun Hutchinson [hamstring] all sidelined.

Otherwise, Rowett has a fully fit squad to choose from, while the likes of Charlie Cresswell and Scott Malone will almost certainly be given another chance to prove that they can keep their places in the starting lineup.

Benno’s long road to recovery

The Lions are unbeaten since the forward returned to first-team training at the start of October

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk IT FEELS like Mason Bennett rarely gets any luck when it comes to injuries.

Most supporters would see the forward as prone to picking up knocks, although he’s quick to highlight that his most recent run in the team was both long and successful.

That was up until August 13th, when he tore his hamstring in the early stages of a 3-2 win against Coventry City. He was ruled out until the start of October, an injury that undoubtedly couldn’t have come at a worse time.

“I felt great throughout pre-season and I started a couple of games at the start of the season,” he told the News.

“It’s just my luck with my muscles really, I seem to keep having problems with them.

It’s part of the career, isn’t it? It’s part of the game that we’re in.

“You can’t be down and moping about it.

You’ve got to pick yourself up and go again.”

Simply put, a torn hamstring is a nasty injury for anyone to suffer, although Bennett believes that this one wasn’t as bad as some of the previous ones he’s suffered.

“I ripped it off the bone entirely before, that was surgery and everything,” he explained.

“This one wasn’t too bad, it was a medium injury done at the lower end of my hamstring around the tendon.”

Nonetheless, the process isn’t much easier. Physically, the recovery process

is difficult and painful, but above all, the time it takes for the damage to heal feels incredibly long.

“In the first couple of weeks you’re icing and getting some massage into it because you’ve got to wait for it to heal back together, there’s still a tear there.

“Then once you’re past that recovery stage, I think I had four to six weeks in the gym where I was strengthening my hamstring and doing all the other muscles because you can’t let them deteriorate as well.

“Then I had three to four weeks outside, but once I was outside I felt fine, and I’m sure if you asked the sports scientists, they’d say that I was really eager to get involved and train with the team because I felt fine.

“Obviously you have to be cautious with hamstrings because it’s very frequent that you’ll come back too quickly and they’ll go again.”

From an outside perspective, the physical aspect is by far the hardest, but there’s a significant strain both mentally and emotionally that stems from not training with your teammates and missing out on the social side of things that makes the job so appealing.

“To be fair, it’s only the time when the lads are out training,” Bennett admits. “In the other two hours of the day, you’re not around the lads, you’re on your own.

“Luckily, or unluckily, Lenny [Leonard] came into the treatment room and Hutchy [Hutchinson] was in there, so there was a bit of conversation. You really have to make the most of it with the lads before and after

training, just have a bit of banter and keep in touch because you feel isolated when you’re injured.

“The lads are great, they still make you feel part of the group. You’ve just got to keep talking to them and keep in touch.”

Above all, Bennett is desperate to play football, which is what made his latest injury so demoralising. He was delighted to return to Millwall’s starting lineup against Watford last week, providing an assist for Tom Bradshaw’s second goal, but he was equally as gutted to be dropped to the bench against West Brom as manager Gary Rowett made the decision to rest him.

“I was devastated when I got pulled in for the meeting,” the 26-year-old admitted.

“The gaffer obviously explained to me why, which I can understand, but as a player, if you’re fit, you always want to play.

“I was obviously devastated to not start the game but I obviously know that the last five or six games have been impacted by the subs. I knew I needed to come on and give everything, which I always will do, and I’ve had a bit of luck with a couple of the assists so long may that continue.

“I think it’s really important, not just for myself but for the whole squad, to stay focused whether you’re starting or not. In a matchday, especially with the five subs coming on for 20 or 30 minutes, you don’t know, so you’ve got to be ready to come on, make a positive impact and help the lads who started the game if they’re feeling a bit tired.

“You’ve got to go out there and run your backside off.”

For better or for worse, Bennett does

have a set of characteristics that make him incredibly unique but also prone to injury.

Rowett often describes him as ‘an explosive athlete’, with his energy and searing pace often causing damage that can keep him out for extended periods.

“I understand it because there’s a couple of lads who are short, stocky and quite quick off the mark. We frequently get muscle injuries and little niggles here and there.

“The impact ones, touch wood, I’ve not had any of them. But like the gaffer said, me being so short and stocky and quick, it’s going to have an effect on my body.

“It’s down to me to put in the extra yards throughout the week when we’ve got Saturday to Saturday, to do extra running and try to build the fitness and the resilience in my muscles if the gaffer needs me to play on a Wednesday and a Saturday.”

Since he returned to the matchday squad, Millwall have been unbeaten, winning four of their last five games. In the short time that he’s been back in first-team training, Bennett believes that there’s a renewed sense of optimism and confidence in the group that can take them a long way.

“When results aren’t going your way, you always think that you need to find a spark from somewhere. Everyone’s looking at each other at times.

“Obviously you’ve got a player like Flemmo [Flemming] who scored a brilliant goal at Rotherham which really gave us that spark, it can galvanise a team.

“With the quality he’s got, he can really lift the team around us.”

With that, of course, comes complacency.

The Lions occupy a play-off spot heading into Saturday’s game at Huddersfield Town, who currently sit bottom of the table, although Bennett explains that there is a specific precaution in place to stop the players getting ahead of themselves at any point in the campaign.

“We have a fine in place in the group where if anyone looks at the table or talks about the table, we slap a fine on it.

“It sounds so cliché, but it’s so important for us as a group. Game after game, we focus on one, don’t worry about anything else, that’ll all take care of itself. I think that really stuck with us, especially in the past few weeks.

“It’s obviously beneficial at the moment and we’re getting these results against arguably the bigger clubs and the bigger squads. I feel like we’re performing well against those teams.

“We’ve got four games before the break, so we’ll need that same intensity off the ball especially to get the results.

“The teams are in this team for a reason.

They aren’t at the standard of the Premier League and obviously they’re above League One. Everyone is on a level playing field, so I don’t think you can go into any game thinking ‘oh, we’re playing these today, they’ll be good’. You roll your sleeves up and get into anyone.

“That’s the kind of mentality that I have and I think the group has it together as a unit. You take every opponent on headto-head and go after them. We always find little chinks in their armour which we can exploit, which has been working.”

Since returning to the team against Rotherham United on October 5, the midfielder played the full 90 minutes in four consecutive games before missing Saturday’s clash against West Brom through illness.

“There’s obviously the old cliché that it’s the life of a footballer,” he told the News.

“I love playing, so if you’re not playing you start moaning. I’m playing, so I can’t really complain on that front, I’m enjoying it.

“When you’re winning and you’re in a good place, you obviously feel a little bit less tired.

“It’s hard, but the Championship is hard, be that Saturday and Tuesday or Saturday and Wednesday, whatever we’re playing. International games too, it clocks up.

“The games have been going well and I’m enjoying it, hopefully that continues.”

The Northern Ireland international has been one of Millwall’s best players so far this season. He ranks highest in the entire Football League for defensive actions per 90 minutes, a stat that surprised even himself when he was told about it, and the Lions have improved massively since he returned to the starting lineup.

Saville highlights the change in tactics as the biggest reason for their improvement, and believes that the squad can finally kick on now they’ve adapted a 4-2-3-1 formation..

“It’s a bit of everything, but the formation has helped, obviously changing that at the Rotherham game,” he explained.

“I feel like, as a team, we’ve stripped it back really and just gone back to doing the basics well and building off that.

“The gaffer has changed to a [back] four and we’ve benefited from that, which is good. Now the confidence is growing and we’re winning football matches.

“West Brom was a difficult game but you’re seeing good performances over the last few weeks as well. We’re in a

However, the new system has meant that Saville has had to adapt, although he doesn’t see this as a significant change. Instead, he believes it to be a long-term development which has seen him improve his style of play since arriving at The Den in 2021.

“I think it stems back to last year. I came in and, slowly, my role has changed, which is good. I’m playing deeper, the last few weeks have predominantly been with Bill [Mitchell] and I feel like we’ve made a good partnership.

“I’ve been doing a lot of the hard yards

and the dirty work but I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

“Predominantly I’ve always been a no.8, a box-to-box midfielder. But we’ve gone to a midfield two and we have Zian [Flemming] who’s been playing as the no.10, so we’ve been solid as a back four and a midfield two. Then we want Zian and the rest of the front four to go and win us the game.

“Obviously set plays have been a big hand and I feel like we’ve got the balance right at the moment and we have lads that have come in and been doing well. Collectively, we’ve been pulling in the right direction.”

Saville also believes that he’s been helped by playing alongside 21-yearold Billy Mitchell, who is one of the club’s brightest prospects. The young midfielder has been thrown in at the deep end but has already played just shy of 100 games for the first-team in all competitions.

So far this season, the pair have been Gary Rowett’s preferred midfield duo, forging a partnership which has significantly helped the latter’s development.

“He’s been great and he’s playing really well,” Saville said of Mitchell.

“We compliment each other pretty

well. He’s young and energetic and I’m a little bit senior now, so with the experience that I bring, I think we compliment each other quite well.

“Hopefully we can carry on improving each other and doing well for the team.

“He listens, he wants to learn, he’s enthusiastic and he’s a dream to play with to be fair. He’s really positive, he comes in with a lot of energy and he’s a good player. He’s good on the ball, he wants to take it in certain areas and do the right thing.

“It’s been great to have him alongside me and hopefully I’m helping him along the way as well.”

“We would never look at any game and think that we’ve got to do anything different other than turn up, work hard and be really tough to play against. Rowett previously highlighted his side’s mental block away from home, although he believes that their performances against Rotherham United and Bristol City have done enough to make that a thing of the past.

Now, with four games until the start of the World Cup break, the Millwall boss is hopeful that his side can push on and continue to climb the table in the coming

weeks.

“I think we are over that mental block simply because we hadn’t won and we hadn’t got many results.

“The result against Rotherham was huge for us in the way we achieved it, I thought we played well and should’ve won the game. I think it gave the players real confidence to go to Bristol.

“I said at the time that it was the biggest result of the season because it proved we can win away from home and it takes that pressure off our backs.

“What it doesn’t do is guarantee that we’ll win again away from home. Winning on Saturday [vs. West Brom] doesn’t guarantee that we’ll win every game at home. You have to go and earn the right in every game.

“I don’t think we really think too much about some of these points, it’s really just about us replicating what we need to do.

If we do that, we give ourselves a good chance.”

The Lions moved up to sixth place after beating the Baggies 2-1 at The Den, a result which saw them secure their fourth successive victory while extending their unbeaten run to five games.

It comes after a disappointing start to the campaign which saw Rowett’s side sat in the bottom half of the division as recently as their defeat to Blackburn Rovers on October 1st.

It highlights how quickly things can change in the Championship, and as a result, the Millwall boss is keen for his players to avoid getting ahead of themselves so early on in the campaign.

“You get periods of the season where the team feels confident because they’re

“Then you get periods of the season where you have to dig in and try to turn a poor run around.

“As a player, I think you start the season probably knowing that you’re going to get quite a few of those different aspects of the season.

“Players are aware that we’re on a good run, players are aware that we’re playing well, players are aware that we’re in good form, but I don’t think anyone overfocuses.

“I don’t hold meetings saying ‘wow, look how great we’re doing chaps’. We might go over some of the things we’re doing well and we might go over some of the things we need to improve on, but we don’t actually change that much depending on results.

“I think the challenge is to recognise what we’re doing well and see if we can continue to replicate the effort, the energy and some of the finer details of the game.

“That’s the challenge regardless of how the season is going every year. I’ve been in the same boat for ten years.

“No Championship season is that different from any other, really.”

One change that has been made compared to recent seasons is that Millwall have a much younger squad.

The average age of their team is just over 26, a number which has been lowered after moving on some older players and bringing in younger, fresher replacements either on loan or on permanent deals.

Although it means that some of his squad are still getting to grips with the second tier of English football, Rowett sees it as a positive thing in terms of his squad’s mentality and their performance on the pitch.

“I think it means that you’re not saying the same things to the same players over a long period of time,” he explained.

“You’ve got some players in here that are fresh and it’s very new to them.

Flemming, Andreas Voglsammer, Cressy [Cresswell], that won’t have played in the Championship and won’t have experienced it.

“Then you’ve got three or four other players that haven’t been at Millwall before so it’s all new to them in terms of how we would deal with certain situations.

“I think that freshness in the group, while it took a while to settle and bed in, now it’s starting to feel like it’s a real group. What the players should be given great credit for is the way that they’ve settled down and their attitude.

“Even when we weren’t quite as positive as we are now, the players were still working hard and still determined.

That’s always the same.

“They have to be given immense credit for the way that they’ve pulled together as a group and responded after the Blackburn game, I suppose that’s been the main point of the season where we needed a response. Up to now we’ve had that.”

Lions given green light for new training ground

The Lions are looking to move away from their current base at Calmont Road, with the aim being to construct a new facility in West Kingsdown, Kent.

They describe the decision as a “significantly positive step forward in the implementation of the club’s vision for a state-of-the-art training facility for the first team and Academy which is aligned with its long-term objectives.”

In a statement put out on the club’s website, chief executive Steve Kavanagh said that the approval was “incredibly important and very positive news for the football club.

“There is a concerted commitment to ensuring delivery of a high-end and state-of-theart training complex which is aligned with the club’s long-term objectives and in keeping with its values and principles. There is still much work to be done before a facility is up and running but everyone connected with the project will continue to work every bit as tirelessly as has been the case to date in order to fulfil the club’s vision.

“One of our key aims is to bring about a meaningful and positive contribution to West Kingsdown and surrounding areas through the industry-leading work of the Millwall Community Trust, who are excited to begin such endeavours.

“We will continue to keep supporters updated about notable developments in the months ahead.”
