Nearly £200k to make Southwark’s streets safer for women and girls A new map where women can report ‘unsafe’ places

Met Police data shows that in Southwark the areas where most sexual offences have been reported this year are St Giles (in Camberwell) with 41, the Old Kent Road with 37 and Chaucer (the area north of Elephant and Castle) with 34. Data that Southwark Council has already looked at shows that areas along the western border with Lambeth need improving, so the two councils will work together.

Southwark Council will develop its map with some of the £100,000 grant money it got from the Home Office to tackle violence against women and girls, which it has matched with £100,000 of its own.

The rest of the money will go on training businesses to be ‘safe havens’ for women who feel unsafe on the street, and on an advertising campaign to urge men to curb ‘everyday’ sexist behaviour.

The training for businesses will be done by the Safer Business Network. Businesses that complete the training will get a safe haven sign in their window that tells people where they

Similar maps have been created in Hackney and Glasgow around the turn of the year, while police also launched a national map where women can report areas they feel safe or have been harassed in September. Several women canvassed by the News who live and work in Hackney were unaware of the map in that borough.

Women living or working in Southwark who spoke to the News were positive about the idea of collecting more data, to show areas that are consistently reported and improvements could be made. One said that the Old Kent Road, especially between Tesco and the Bricklayers Arms roundabout, felt unsafe to her. Another said that she liked the idea of making it clear an

The advertising campaign will largely be on social media, although there may be some adverts outside, like on bus stops. Adverts will “inspire” men to improve their behaviour, according to a council statement.

Cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle MBE, Southwark’s cabinet member for community safety, said: “Women and girls should be able to walk our streets without fear or intimidation. It is not for them to adapt their behaviour to avoid unwanted attention or to feel safe.

“With this funding, we are looking at all the ways we can strengthen our work to make Southwark a safer place to live and visit. We know bad behaviour is not bound by borders, so working with Lambeth is vital.

“In Southwark, we are getting to the root of the issue by speaking directly with men and boys as vital allies. We are asking women and girls to report their experiences so we can better understand the problem. We are working with local businesses to turn them into safe spaces where people in distress can turn. We are training street-based staff so they know how best to respond to and support

women’s safety.”

This latest funding comes after the council got more than £350,000 last year from the Home Office to improve CCTV and street lighting in areas of concern in the borough.

Sadly, 513 sexual offences were reported to the police in Southwark from January to June alone this year. Some 195 of those were rapes.

We have reported several of those incidents of rape and sexual assault in the News. In January, we reported on two rapes of teenage girls that were reported to police as taking place in Peckham, within three weeks of each other. Officers later said that the first attack did not take place in Peckham as originally thought.

Meanwhile another teenage girl was raped in Burgess Park in February.

Police are also operating their own schemes to tackle violence against women and girls in London called Operation Vigilant. Officers, both in plain clothes and uniform, visit sexual violence hotspots at times when the data shows assaults are most likely to happen. The News was witness to one of these trips last December, when officers found a flasher in Borough Market.

bouldering in the quays

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The organiser of a Bermondsey bouldering group has given his seal of approval to a new climbing wall that has opened in Surrey Quays.

Tomiwa Gidado, who runs the Bermondsey Boulders group, has already taken his charges to the new Arch climbing wall in the shopping centre several times since it opened on July 25.

“It’s great,” he said, adding that every level in the new wall is more accessible than the Arch climbing wall in the Biscuit Factory, where he has taken the group twice a week since launching it in 2021.

The Arch in Surrey Quays offers entry from £5 and is open to everyone. The 7,500 square foot climbing centre is in the former Dorothy Perkins shop in the shopping centre.

The centre will put on regular family days for local people. New climbers can join free improver sessions most days. The space will also be offered free of charge for

community groups to use at certain times of the week, so that the space is accessible to everyone.

Tomiwa with members of his Bermondsey Boulder group Fred Stone, who owns the Arch Climbing Wall, commented: “Our new branch of The Arch Climbing Wall at Canada Water is an exciting opportunity for the local area and for the climbing community.

“In the same way that climbing has gained mainstream exposure through film and the Olympic games, we are looking forward to showcasing climbing within this exciting and imaginative destination.

We are also talking to local groups to offer them free use of the wall.”

Self-described Bermondsey lad Tomiwa said he will alternate his twice-weekly sessions between the Surrey Quays centre and the Biscuit Factory wall.

His group has grown fast since last year and he has 480 people subscribed. Of those, normally ten or fifteen come to each session. Tomiwa said the idea was to help improve people’s physical, mental and

emotional health after the pandemic. After Sunday morning sessions at 11am, he takes people to the Maltby Street market for food and to Anspach and Hobsday craft brewery on the Bermondsey Beer Mile.

Wednesday sessions are from 6pm-8pm.

Bridge opens up as historic Götheborg comes for a visit

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Londoners watched an 18th century full-rigged ship pass under Tower Bridge last Monday morning, August 8).

The replica, modelled on the Swedish East India Company trading vessel the Götheborg, constructed in 1738, passed beneath Tower Bridge at 8.30am.

It has now moored at South Dock Quay, next to Canary Wharf, where it will be open to the public from Tuesday 9 to Thursday 11 August.

Tony Green, a retired photographer who came to take snaps of the ship said: “The hull is quite brutal because of the age of it. It’s before cutting edge

design came in. It’s not like tall ships that were built for speed as it was built for trade.”

He said his favourite thing about the ship was the complex rigging, made from ten tons of hemp rope. But he was disappointed that the ship didn’t fire its canons as had been expected.

The original ship, which had a crew of 144 and traded as far as China, sank in 1745 on its way into Gothenburg Harbour.

It was wrecked after crashing into a well known underwater rock called Knipla Börö. Astonishingly, it was visible on the water for several years after it crashed, slowly sinking over the following years.

Matthisson made such an elementary mistake has long puzzled historians.

Some believe a phenomenon called ‘dead water’, in which fresh and saltwater mix to create treacherous ‘internal waves’, might have been to blame.

Marine archaeologists excavated the ship from 1986 and 1992, discovering tea, mother-of-pearl shells, pepper, silks and porcelain in the hull.

The replica ship was built in 2005, costing the equivalent of almost £33 million using 40% Swedish public funds and various private sponsors.

It has docked at harbours across the world including Cape Town, Jakarta, Canton and Gibraltar, and last visited London in 2007.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The former head of the Met Police may have breached professional standards in an inquiry into the botched investigation of a man in Sydenham, the police watchdog has said.

Dame Cressida Dick was accused of withholding information from an independent inquiry into the unsolved murder of Daniel Morgan, a private detective, in a pub car park in 1987.

A separate report published by the police watchdog on Wednesday (August 3), a year after the independent inquiry, found that Dame Cressida “may have breached police standards of professional behaviour by not providing full and exceptional disclosure to the [independent inquiry] sooner.”

But the independent office for police conduct (IOPC) found that this possible breach was not enough for disciplinary action. “We found that she acted with a genuine belief to protect the information but may have got the balance wrong and should have given greater priority to her duty to provide full and exceptional disclosure to the panel,” the report said.

The IOPC report added that there were no further lines of inquiry to pursue into the murder of Mr Morgan, a father of two who was killed by a blow to the head with an axe more than 35 years ago in the car park of the Golden Lion pub.

Mr Morgan’s family said they were “disappointed but not surprised” by the latest report.

They added: “As Daniel’s family, we became aware of the police corruption and criminality at the heart of this matter within weeks of the murder: we said so then, and we had to say so repeatedly over the decades since the murder.”

“We - and the public at large – have been failed over the decades by a culture of corruption and cover up in the Metropolitan Police.”

The Met has accepted that the original investigation into Mr Morgan’s murder was hampered by corruption, but said it was not institutionally corrupt. There

Cressida Dick ‘may have breached professional standards’ over Daniel Morgan case have since been several police inquiries into the killing and two charges, but no one has been brought to justice.

As well as Dame Cressida, it has been reported that the IOPC also found former assistant commissioner John Yates, who retired in 1987, may have breached professional standards by not taking action against the senior investigating officer in the second police investigation, former detective chief superintendent Dave Cook.

Dame Cressida apologised to Mr Morgan’s family in 2021, saying it was a “matter of great regret that no-one has been brought to justice and that our mistakes have compounded the pain

suffered by Daniel’s family”.

Sal Naseem, IOPC regional director for London, said: “From the first to last investigation into Daniel Morgan’s murder there were failures to adequately challenge and investigate allegations that officers had acted corruptly.

“In coming to our decisions, we are acutely aware that not one single officer was ever successfully prosecuted or received significant disciplinary action as a result of corruption directly connected to the murder investigations.

“The wrongs that occurred can never be put right, but it may have served as some small comfort to Mr Morgan’s family and loved ones if the officers

involved had been held to account and suffered the consequences of their actions at the time.

“The circumstances of these matters must serve as a salient reminder to the Metropolitan Police and the police service more widely, of the importance of being constantly vigilant in challenging improper and corrupt behaviour swiftly, firmly and robustly.”

Dame Cressida rejected the IOPC’s findings that she may have breached professional standards.

The report by estate agents Benham

& Reeves found that people from the Chinese city-state made up 21 per cent of foreign property-owners in the borough.

Hongkongers came out top in seventeen London boroughs including Tower Hamlets (26 per cent), Newham (24 per cent), Lewisham (23 per cent),

Hackney (23 per cent), Greenwich (22 per cent) and Islington (20 per cent).

Think tank Civitas has argued wealthy foreign property investment has inflated house prices for native Brits.

MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark Neil Coyle, who has

previously criticised Russian foreign property for that same reason, said Hong Kong property ownership was different.

The Labour MP told the News: “People using their own earnings to buy a family home is quite different to the inflated sums used to launder

integrity in a challenging, unprecedented and complex task. By December 2014, the Panel had received 133,000 pages of material.”

She added: ““Finally, and most importantly, I deeply regret that no one has been brought to justice for Daniel’s murder and regret everything the Met or any of its members have done which has added to the pain of Daniel’s family of losing Daniel in such terrible circumstances.”

In 2019, the People’s Republic of China introduced an extradition law amendment bill which allowed Hong Kong law-breakers to be extradited to mainland China.

Violent protests followed, resulting in the 2020 Hong Kong national security law, which critics say curtailed personal freedoms. Thousands fled to the UK, many buying property.

But since well before 2020, the UK has been a popular destination for Hongkongers, especially those who already held British National (Overseas) (BNO) citizenship.

Created in 1987, BN(O) passports allow some Hong Kong citizens easier access to public services, employment, and can be pathways to full citizenship.

‘my flat is so infested that bedbugs are now nesting in two-yearold son’s bed frame’

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A Camberwell family with two young children live in a council flat ‘infested with vermin which had human waste pouring down the walls for ten months’.

Zara Rowley, 33, a tenant of Camberwell’s Castlemead Estate, says she has also counted three different species of cockroach living in her home.

“It’s appalling. It’s just got so bad to the point where I feel like a shell of a person. There’s no Zara in there anymore”, she said.

Zara says flooding, leaks and vermin have been a problem ever since she arrived in 2013 but the situation seriously deteriorated recently.

In September 2021, a pipe burst, causing fluid to cascade down her walls. Tests confirmed it contained high levels of E. Coli, a bacteria found in faeces.

It could have explained why her ten-year-old has been suffering from repeated illnesses. Zara described their living conditions as “a death sentence”.

The leak was finally repaired on Tuesday, July 26, after Zara got solicitors involved. But after contractors left, a new leak immediately appeared in the living room.

Zara is appalled by how long it took the council to fix the burst pipe. She says excuses like they “couldn’t find the source of the leak” or were “struggling to access people’s flats” are not good enough.

Zara also claims the block’s entire first floor is infested with bed bugs and cockroaches. She

collects the vermin in plastic tubs as evidence of the nightmare she’s living.

Bedbugs are even nesting in the wooden frame of her two-year-old’s bed and her eldest has scarring from the constant bites.

Tearing her hair out, Zara said: “My boys wake up with marks on their face. They’re sick and tired of being bitten all the time. And I don’t sleep because as you go to sleep you see a bed bug crawling right behind you.”

“I’m isolated - nobody visits me except my brother. He says I would rather see you and risk getting bitten”, she said.

Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “I am very sorry that Ms Rowley and her sons have been experiencing these issues.

Everyone has the right to a home that keeps them safe, dry and warm. Her housing case is subject to legal proceedings, so we cannot comment on Ms Rowley’s claim at this stage. However, I can confirm that substantial works have now been undertaken to address leaking pipework in this block and that the whole block is also on our pest control treatment programme.

“To find the source of leaks and to fix them, we often need access to multiple flats. Unfortunately in this case a number of residents initially declined to give the council access.

“Whilst I completely understand that granting access can feel like an unnecessary disruption if there are no visible signs of a leak within your own home, we would be very grateful if all tenants and leaseholders could provide prompt access to our leaks team so we can locate and undertake necessary repairs quickly.”

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Passenger numbers on some of the bus routes that could be cut under Transport for London (TfL) plans to save costs are much higher than before the pandemic, according to new figures.

In one week in May this year, 70,940 people used the 78 bus, which goes from Nunhead through much of north Southwark to Shoreditch - a 27 per cent increase on the same week in 2019, when 56,068 people used the route.

Some 4,742 people used the N12, the night time version of the 12 bus, which goes through Dulwich, Camberwell and the Elephant, in the same week. That is 35 per cent higher than the equivalent week in 2022.

Should Borough High Street road changes stay?

Transport for London (TfL) widened the pavement area along a stretch of the northern part of Borough High

per cent of pre-pandemic levels. While this is the general figure, these new, more detailed figures show the high level of ridership on certain routes like the 78 and the N12, which was previously not public.

The figures, which were released following a freedom of information request

by Southwark’s Liberal Democrats, come as TfL’s ten-week public consultation on the bus cuts came to a close last Sunday (August 7).

The 12 and the N12 will be replaced by an altered version of the 148, which runs 24 hours. But TfL admitted at a Southwark Council meeting last month that cutting routes will mean buses run less frequently.

With such a high level of usage on the N12, the Lib Dems argue that leaving people waiting could compromise people’s safety.

revealed: Bus figures for some routes set to be axed are higher than before the pandemic relying on our buses again. Across London, it’s regularly close to 90% usage. Sadiq is damaging our Covid recovery.

“The figures, which the Liberal Democrats have obtained, show Sadiq Khan’s cuts are going to make Londoners less safe. This data makes it clear how many key workers, women, LGBTQ+ and vulnerable people rely on our night buses (where passenger numbers have recovered most strongly). The removal of route 12 will leave many struggling to access work and central London.”

Despite the high usage of the 78 and the N12, not all routes reached the same level as in 2019. The daytime 12 route was at 83 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in the same week in May, and has been as low as 53 per cent.

The 45 bus route, which goes through Clapham, Brixton and Camberwell to Elephant and Castle, has been down at 45 per cent even of pre-pandemic levels even

TfL made the changes in the summer of 2020 as part of its response to the pandemic. The transport agency wants to promote active travel like walking and cycling, as well as reducing air pollution.

Now TfL has confirmed that the changes are going to stay in place for another eighteen months. The barriers will be replaced with “semi-permanent materials” this autumn. After the consultation, those changes could be made permanent.

Helen Cansick, TfL’s head of healthy streets investment and delivery, said: “Enabling more people to walk and cycle is a key part of our plans to ensure that Londoners have a healthy and sustainable transport network. Wider pavements played an important role in giving people space to move safely during the pandemic and we are keen to explore whether these changes could have a positive impact on walking and cycling, if made permanent. I’d encourage everyone who lives, works and travels through the area to have their say on the changes.”

The news comes as TfL continues to negotiate a funding agreement with central government. A condition of that agreement has been to find £400 million in savings as part of an effort to plug a billion-pound gap in its budget. The buses would save around £35 million, TfL has previously said.

Geoff Hobbs, Director of Public Transport Service Planning at TfL, said:?“TfL’s reliance on passenger fares for the majority of its income means the effect of the pandemic on its finances has been devastating, requiring Government support to keep public transport in London operating. The Government set a number of conditions before it would provide emergency funding to enable TfL to keep operating, including requiring us to produce a plan to set out how we would achieve significant financial savings. This plan included reducing the extent of our

bus network.

“Ridership levels on routes in this consultation, including those in Southwark, are not matching the recovery we are seeing in other parts of London.

Usage was also falling in the years from 2014 prior to the pandemic. We have carefully studied our network in order to only propose changes to areas that are well served by other routes already or would be after re-structuring other routes as part of this proposal. We have always adjusted the network to reflect our changing city, but the devastating impact of the pandemic on our finances and the Government’s conditions have now required a more significant review.

As with all our consultations, we will take into account all public and stakeholder responses, as well as the latest ridership data, before reaching any final decisions.”

Appeal after ‘smoker lit up on tube platform then punched man in face’

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Police have launched an appeal after a man allegedly sparked up a cigarette on the platform at Kennington Underground before punching someone in the face.

A bystander reportedly challenged the smoker, who responded by hitting him, leaving him with swelling and a black eye, at 1.10pm on Friday, June 24.

Officers believe the man in the CCTV image may have information that could help their investigation.

Museum to return ownership of its Benin bronzes to Nigeria

In total, ownership of 72 objects stolen during the British military invasion of Benin City, Southern Nigeria, in February 1897, will be returned to the central African nation.

Benin bronzes are decorative plaques that once decorated the Royal Palace of Benin. Made from brass and various metals, they are considered emblematic of a ‘golden age’ of Benin metal craftsmanship.

Professor Abba Tijani, DirectorGeneral of Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) said: “We very much welcome this decision by the Trustees of the Horniman Museum and Gardens.

“Following the endorsement by the Charity Commission, we look forward to a productive discussion on loan agreements and collaborations between the National Commission for Museums and Monuments and the Horniman.”

Other objects being returned include ivory and brass ceremonial objects, a

brass cockerel altar piece, brass bells, fans and baskets, and a key ‘to the king’s palace’.

The Horniman will now discuss the formal transfer process with the NCMM, and the possibility of retaining some objects on loan for display, research and education.

The museum received the request from the NCMM in January 2022 and researched its objects from Benin to establish which were in the scope of the request.

The Horniman says it made the decision having consulted with community members, visitors, schoolchildren, academics, heritage professionals and artists based in Nigeria and the UK. Eve Salomon, Chair of the Trustees of the Horniman Museum and Gardens, said: “The evidence is very clear that these objects were acquired through force, and external consultation supported our view that it is both moral and appropriate to return their ownership to Nigeria.

“The Horniman is pleased to be able to take this step and we look forward to working with the NCMM to secure longer term care for these precious artefacts.”

Whether objects stolen under the British Empire should be returned to their places origin is a source of vociferous debate.

For example, Greece has called for the return of the Elgin Marbles, currently displayed in the British Museum, since

the early 1980s.

The British Museum also houses 900 objects from the historic Kingdom of Benin, only roughly 100 of which are permanently on display.

Asked if it plans to return these objects, the British Museum would not say if it would. Instead a British Museum spokesperson said: “The British Museum understands and recognises the significance of the issues surrounding the return of objects and we work with communities, colleagues and museums across the globe to share the collection as widely as possible.

“The collections also offer an important opportunity for audiences to understand the history of the British conquest of Benin City and to reflect on the impact of this period of colonial history. Deepening public access and understanding, creating new ways and opportunities for collections to be shared and understood right across the world, and forging connections between the present and the past, remain at the core of what the British Museum seeks to achieve.”

Maccreanor Lavington are the lead architects and masterplanners for Phase 2B, working alongside plot architects Haworth Tompkins, Sergison Bates, East and Architecture Doing Place.

John Hughes, group director of development for Notting Hill Genesis, said: “Since the original masterplan

was approved in 2015, there have been significant policy and social changes. We have therefore taken a fresh approach to the design, street layouts and living spaces, including an increase in the number of family sized homes and green spaces.

“We have submitted a new planning

application to the council for the revised designs, which maintains the principles of the original vision for the Aylesbury.

We have consulted with local residents and stakeholders about these changes over the last 12 months, helping to ensure the updated plans deliver what the community needs.”

Ms Davies was last seen in the early hours of Thursday, July 7 as she walked along Derby Road in West Croydon. Police say they have been told about a second, unconfirmed sighting at 7am the same day in nearby Clarendon Road.

She had left her family home in Grays in Essex three days earlier. Police are continuing to investigate. Four of the five people arrested have been released on bail.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Developers Notting Hill Genesis wants to knock down four Aylesbury Estate blocks and replace them with almost 50 per cent fewer social rented homes than are already there.

Phase 2B, which includes the Padbury, Wendover, Winslow and Ravenstone blocks, has 327 residential units of social rent tenure.

If these latest plans are approved, they will be demolished and replaced with just 163 social rent units.

Social rent homes are let at a low cost, set by a government formula. This means they are significantly lower than the market rate.

In total, the Phase 2B scheme would build 614 residential units, of which 369 would be private, 82 affordable, and 163 social rent.

The new development would also have 400 sqm of “non residential space”.

This is less than the 529 sqm of public open space the site currently has.

The vast majority (510) of the 614 residential units are earmarked as one or two-bed flats. There would be 51 three-bedroom flats, 50 four-bedroom flats, and three five-bedroom flats.

Across the entire Aylesbury Estate, the New Southwark Plan envisages building 4,200 new homes with at least 2,249 social rent homes.

A 2015 Greater London Authority case report shows that, in 2008, the Aylesbury had 2,758 homes, 2,402 of which were socially rented, indicating the new development will produce a net loss in social rent properties.

The Aylesbury Estate has been earmarked for regeneration since 2005 and outline planning permission was granted in 2015 for phased redevelopment.

This meant that the details of individual phases were to be thrashed out over the following years, as in this case.

Notting Hill Genesis hopes to secure full planning permission later this year with construction work planned to begin in 2023.

Owami Davies was last seen in Croydon on July 7. Five people have been arrested on suspicion of murder and three on suspicion of kidnap, with the most recent arrest on August 6.

A spokesperson for Guy’s and St Thomas’ said: “We are very concerned about our missing colleague Owami Davies who is a student nurse at our Trust.

Guys’ and St Thomas’ Hospital (GSTT) previously scheduled walk-in clinics for the IMVANEX monkeypox vaccine for the weekends beginning July 30 and August 6.

But in a tweet at 1.30pm on Friday, August 5, GSTT announced: “Our monkeypox vaccination clinics at Guy’s Hospital are now appointment only. We apologise to anyone who was planning to attend our walk-in clinic.”

Greg Owen, founder of iwantPrEPnow, a sexual health organisation, told the News he was “so angry” about a lack of communication from UKHSA and said the vaccine roll-out had been a “shambolic chaotic mess”.

He said: “None of us can get any information about what is happening with ongoing procurement. We can’t get any information - it’s practically impossible.”

On the weekend beginning July 30, there were reports that the GSTT walk-in vaccination clinic had ran out of vaccines by 11am on Sunday.

Greg Owen said: “I’ve heard anecdotally that on Sunday the clinic closed just as it was opening.”

On Twitter, one user wrote: “My son queued both yesterday (July 30) and today (July 31). Yesterday they had run out by 16:20 and again today already run out by 11:00.”

The News asked GSTT to confirm whether this was true. A spokesperson from the trust simply said: “Due to the very limited supply of the monkeypox vaccine, our vaccination clinics at Guy’s Hospital are now appointment only and people should only attend if they have been contacted by us.”

monkeypox walk-in clinics were abruptly cancelled the vaccine prioritising those that are eligible who have been contacted and booked in for appointments.”

The decision to cancel this weekend’s walk-in clinic suggests a u-turn in vaccination strategy. While last weekend GSTT were holding walk-in clinics, the GSTT website now links users to a gov.co.uk website which tells people to seek vaccines at their local clinic.

Greg Owen said he knew people who were travelling from Manchester and Belfast to Guys’, only to be told this afternoon the clinic was cancelled.

He said his friend from Belfast had already spent £200 on flights.

The webpage also says the vaccine is being offered to people who are “most

at risk right now”.

While the walk-in clinics were advertised as being for those who are “eligible” it is unclear whether patients were being vetted to ensure they were high priority.

This raises questions as to whether GSTT administered vaccines to people who were ineligible.

Greg believes this is a possibility. He said at walk-in clinics you could get a vaccine simply by saying you were eligible.

He said this is different from being invited, in which case people’s medical histories are checked and crossreferenced to confirm they’re high risk.

Agency (UKHSA), people eligible for their first vaccine are healthcare workers working with monkeypox patients, men who have sex with men, and people who have had a confirmed contact with a monkeypox patient.

The News asked GSTT whether attendees to the clinic were vetted for eligibility, but they declined to comment on that subject.

This disruption comes amidst widespread reports of a monkeypox vaccine shortage, with UKHSA saying it has a “limited supply”.

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark said: “Southwark needs protecting from the spread of monkeypox but ministers are too busy monkeying around with their

leadership infighting to focus on the serious issue at hand.

“More vaccines are required urgently but demand vastly outstrips supply currently. The NHS has shown that, when equipped, it is the best health service in the world. Sadly, Tory ministers have learned nothing from Covid and appear to be making the same mistakes with monkeypox.”

There have been more than 2,600 cases of monkeypox in the UK so far, mostly among men who have sex with men.

The Department for Health and Social says it has procured over 150,000 vaccines.

Public Health England was approached for comment.

Police looking for three men after ‘nearly fatal knife fight’

The attack happened after an argument on September 4, 2021.

Officers were called to reports of a fight outside the King’s Head Yard off Borough High Street.

They found a 45-year-old man who had been stabbed several times outside a club.

Detective Constable Quinn Furey, of the Met’s Central South Command said: “This was a low level disagreement that swiftly escalated to extreme violence.

“It was pure luck that the victim’s injuries weren’t fatal.

“If you can name any of the men pictured please do the right thing and get in touch.”

New recommendations announced as case of 15-year-old girl strip searched at Walworth Police station is still active

takes into account their health, hygiene and welfare needs An IOPC officer told the News that the strip-search of the girl in Walworth “fed into the recommendations” even though that investigation is still ongoing.

This was made possible through the IOPC’s ‘Section 10’ mechanism which allows it to make recommendations before an investigation has concluded to ensure ‘quick-time learning’.

An IOPC officer told the News that such recommendations are given when something “needs to be acted upon now”.

‘Section 10’ recommendations differ from ‘28A’ recommendations which may only be made to police after an investigation or review has been completed. These recommendations come after the IOPC received eight new referrals concerning strip searches in June after it made further inquiries.

To date, the IOPC has also received eleven referrals from the Met relating to separate incidents between December 2019 and May 2022.

‘Don’t stop stop and search’ Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A longstanding Southwark schools police officer has defended the use of stop and search as an important way of keeping children safe.

PC Nsikan Etuk, the school police officer at Southwark’s pupil referral unit, said he often sees young people carrying weapons in his work and was in favour of making searches less unpleasant, rather than cutting down on them.

He said: “I’m very aware of the levels of violence and vulnerability that our youngsters are presented with. Until we get to the stage where it’s a lot safer, until we can find a safer way of protecting young people, I’m not in the camp of reducing the numbers.

I’m about improving quality and communication.”

The News reported earlier this year that Southwark had by far the highest number of stop-andsearches for children aged under fourteen over the previous year of any London borough, with 463. Just 56 of the 463 searches resulted in a ‘positive outcome’ – where police find something potentially criminal.

between the ages of fifteen and nineteen, the next bracket up, with 2,976 searches in the same period.

PC Etuk said: “If you’re trying to improve the quality, then the numbers are more likely to come down anyway as a consequence. It’s about trying to ensure a higher success rate, making sure searches are intelligence-led.”

He ran a programme last year to get young people to explain to police officers how searches could be better carried out.

“They said it’s more about ‘talk to us, listen to us, listen to our views more.

Explain to us what you’re doing, don’t just come over in our faces. It’s about engagement communication was the best one.

“They didn’t use this word, but they were talking about de-escalation. We could appreciate that’s what they meant. Strike up a conversation if possible. Try and be polite where you can. Say ‘I appreciate it can feel embarrassing’, and explain the reasons why we’re doing it.

“Another thing is a lot of the youngsters, they don’t get the chance to get closure. You can carry those ill feelings, especially if you’ve been handcuffed. OK the search is over, nothing’s been found. It doesn’t leave a good impression.

PC Etuk was speaking to the News after a ‘graduation’ ceremony for a police internship programme for

young people he launched alongside educational consultant Doreen Sinclair-McCollins and ex-Met borough commander Victor Olisa.

The eighteen teenagers, at St Thomas the Apostle school on Hollydale Road, had thirteen weeks with black people working in law enforcement, and two weeks of work experience across the Met. The programme was open to all but many of the students who took part were black because of the demographics of the area.

The programme included sessions with firearms and forensics teams, the marine unit, the territorial support group, which deals with public order like protests, as well as several other teams.

PC Etuk, who with eighteen years under his belt is the second-longest serving schools officer in the Met, said that the programme also had a huge effect on his fellow police officers who took part.

“That was a surprise direction we didn’t envisage,” he told the News.

“We had officers in tears following the programme.

“What that suggested to me is… there was an emotional connection.

When most officers sign up to join the police service, it is protect the vulnerable and so forth.”

He said that he thought “police officers are carrying a lot of

trauma.” He added: “We’re going from situation to situation, with all the recent issues in society. There’s a low morale, burnout is the best description I could use. But this programme helped re-energise us.”

PC Etuk said he thought of the programme as an extension of his work in schools. “It’s about being a role model and building relationships with youngsters and getting youngsters connecting with police.

“If you’re working in a diverse borough like ours, you’re going to see us engaging with young people, working with quite a few of the most vulnerable individuals. I am seeing that gap being bridged but I am not under the illusion that it’s perfect.”

PC Etuk grew up in New Cross and Brockley, and spent a lot of time in Peckham with family. He joined the Met twenty years ago, three years after it was branded institutionally racist by the report on the police’s investigation into Stephen Lawrence’s murder.

“It was floating around, but I didn’t take an active acknowledgement of things like that,” he said. “I was doing my university degree stuff.. It wasn’t something that was fully in my mind.

“I was always fully aware of the relationship between myself and the police... But with regards to the Macpherson report I wasn’t aware

of it acutely at the time. I was aware of racism [and the police], I had so much being fed back growing up as a youngster.”

One of the aims of PC Etuk’s pilot scheme was to bridge the gap between young people and the police that he himself experienced.

The programme could now be followed up with other schools if organisers get funding, also aimed to help get more non-white people interested in joining the police.

Students will carry on getting coaching until April next year and will get an A-level equivalent if they complete the whole programme.

The young people who took part said they had learned more about the police and most said they were now interested in joining.

Brissi Bidi, 17, said: “I decided to join the programme for a few reasons, I had spare time but also I was interested in the manner that the police operate. I have found it enjoyable, eventful and inspiring and it’s changed my views on how it is to work in the police force, even making me seriously consider a role working in the firearms section in future.”

Esme Gustave, also 17, added: “I wanted to join because I believe it’s important to bridge the gap between the Met and the ethnic minority groups in society. It’s given us the chance to gain an understanding of the Met and its sections and I have thoroughly enjoyed it, including meeting different people and establishing connections to regain that trust in the police.”

PC Etuk said making the Met more diverse was important to police more effectively.

“Policing is about confidence and connection with the community you work with. I always like the [Nelson] Mandela quote “if you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”

Policing in schools was thrust into the spotlight earlier this year when a fifteen-year-old female student known as Child Q for safeguarding reasons - was strip-searched after being wrongly suspected of carrying cannabis.

But asked if the incident, which resulted in days of protests in Hackney, had resulted in much fallout in his school, PC Etuk said “funnily enough, no.”

He added: “It was a big scandal. For me, the fallout has been more felt among community and officials in governance and individuals, looking at the concerns and trying to address those issues.

“With the young people, it’s been business as usual for me. We’ve had open discussions, we talk about these things. We’re at that level of operations where young people can come and talk to me about these things. It’s not been an issue with regards to Child Q with the young people.”

Police unsure about exclusion policy Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A police officer who works at Southwark’s school for excluded children has said he is not sure how the council’s policy of aiming to end exclusion would work “in a practical sense”.

PC Nsikan Etuk, who has been a schools officer in the Met for eighteen years, said he was “not convinced” by the policy, unveiled by Southwark Council at a meeting last week.

“Me and one of the headteachers, we spoke at length about this,” he said. “[Southwark Association of Secondary Headteachers] have put a representation on this, and we agree

that we’re not sure. Look, for me sometimes we can go down a pathway and it may sound good in theory, but in practice is it the best thing? I’m not convinced.”

Southwark Council’s head of schools and young people Cllr Jasmine Ali said last month that she wanted to end exclusions to improve the life chances of young people in the borough.

Children who are excluded often end up involved in crime and have mental health issues.

The council are asking schools, social services, police and other groups that work with young people to sign up to their charter, which also recognises “that there are rare instances where exclusion is unavoidable to safeguard children.”

But PC Etuk said: “Having a

dangerous young person in a school environment… I’ve dealt with it for years. It can be very difficult for schools to manage.

“Our youngsters are exposed to a whole level of violence that has been normalised. The exploitation, the crime. You do need to get to a point where you can protect the needs of other young people. I’m not 100 per cent sure, I’m yet to see that.”

PC Etuk said he wanted to see attention focused on early intervention in the lives of children with behavioural and mental health problems, to prevent those issues getting more difficult as the children get older.

“A lot of children that get excluded, they present a lot of vulnerabilities, the schools don’t have the resources

to deal with it.

“Parents don’t know where to get support for children with these conditions. That is where we need to be channelling the energy.”

The charter does pledge something along these lines, saying that “we will ensure that children’s additional needs are identified early, clearly communicated and supported through evidence-based interventions that are regularly reviewed for impact.”

We reported last week how the Southwark Association of Secondary Headteachers (SASH) had praised the charter - while saying that its members, who make up most of the borough’s secondary schools, would not be signing until there was more detail on protecting teachers as well as children.

“Now that sounds fine in principle but there’s lots of misbehaviour short of criminal which absolutely harrow and ruin the life chances of children in schools…”

But in an article published in the Local Government Chronicle, Cllr Jasmine Ali said she was “shocked” that Mr Bennett “could get the charter so wrong”.

The Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education wrote: “My live interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme pitched me into a debate with Tom Bennett, the government behaviour adviser. I was shocked someone with that level of influence could get the charter so wrong.

“He didn’t like us launching it in the first place, because he

said Southwark doesn’t have a lot of exclusions anyway. For him exclusions are about ‘bad behaviour’.

I was astonished to hear this from the so-called behaviour tsar.

“It’s troubling that someone with so much influence is missing the point here. As I put it to Tom, a child at risk of exclusion has an unmet need.”

The charter states that disproportionate exclusions of children with “particular characteristics… exposes inequalities”.

By striving for a policy of “100 per cent inclusion” the charter aims “to confront and tackle inequalities”.

Cllr Ali also wrote that the”media frenzy” which followed the Southwark Inclusion Charter would not stop the council pressing ahead

with the policy.

She argued that some had misunderstood the policy, believing it meant Southwark Council was “banning” exclusions.

“Because, of course, we have never dreamt of banning schools from excluding students.

But we do insist that where exclusion takes place that is not and can never be the end of the matter”, she wrote.

Cllr Jasmine Ali hits back at government advisor who slammed exclusions policy

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Cllr Jasmine Ali has hit back at the government education advisor who said Southwark’s exclusion policy could “ruin children’s life chances”.

Approved by cabinet on Tuesday, July 19, the Southwark Inclusion Charter pledges to avoid excluding children except when “unavoidable to safeguard children”.

In an exchange with Cllr Ali on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Tom Bennett had said: “What the charter clearly states is that for any behaviour short of the most extreme behaviour, like knife crime and so on, schools should probably consider not excluding.

The charter, which received national media attention, has also been widely praised. Anne Longfield, the former children’s commissioner, called it “an important move”.

Meanwhile a young person who worked on the charter, and who had been excluded themselves years earlier, said: “Working on the school inclusion charter was very inspirational. As an excluded student myself, the idea of excelling into a successful career was capped from the second I was excluded.

“However, I have managed to go to university and use my personal experience to inspire and influence my academic choices. This charter provides a second chance for young people like myself to expand into new opportunities

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark teenagers have been supporting local charities, including the council’s mental health service for young people.

Some fifty young people, doing their national citizen service (NCS) with Groundwork London, organised five separate projects.

One group created an exhibition of photography and other works of art to support the Nest, Southwark Council’s mental health service for young people. They also held a sports

participant with Groundwork London, said: “I have really enjoyed my time on the NCS programme as it has allowed me to face new challenges while meeting new friends. Our social action allowed our team to build transferable skills while taking part in raising awareness for the homeless alongside Brixton Soup Kitchen.”

A third team chose to raise funds and awareness for ACLT, a blood cancer/disorder charity that raises awareness of the need for more stem cell, blood and organ donors in the UK.

Focus on Southwark Youth turning away from a life of crime Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Two Southwark teenage boys have turned their back on a life of crime and are pursuing a career in the film industry instead.

Jordan and Karl, aged fifteen and sixteen, have written a script for a short film called The Escape Plan, about two aspiring rappers who commit a robbery to avoid getting evicted - but are then given a recording contract, and are worried about losing everything they have worked so hard for because of their criminal activities.

‘Write what you know’ is advice commonly given to aspiring writers, and The Escape Plan’s subject matter may be not too distantly related to some of Jordan and Karl’s own previous experiences.

Karl, who lives in the area around the Aylesbury Estate, was referred to Roadworks Media, the company that is producing the film, after being released from a young offenders centre last year. Jordan, who is from Bermondsey, was also referred to Roadworks after being charged. Both said they had been involved with “numerous” things, without going into more detail.

Now they have written this script, which Roadworks is making into a 20-30 minute film with support from Theatre Peckham. Casting is currently underway, and producers hope to start a two-week shoot in mid-August, finishing on August 26.

All being well, the film will be screened first at Theatre Peckham on September

30, and will be then be shown around Southwark.

Discussing the script, Jordan said: “It was important to show the two different paths, sometimes people are more serious, like they just want to get out of the hood, but some people just like it.

I sort of wanted to show how it played out.”

Karl added: “What I wanted to show was - there’s always room and there’s always time to change your ways. It don’t matter how old you are, it don’t matter what stage or position you’re in.

Like, from experience - I’ve been through some stuff and I’ve been able to change my ways. I just wanted to show other children that are disadvantaged, to show them that there’s hope out there.”

Roadworks is run by Quince Garcia, a Camberwell man who himself managed to escape a life of crime - punctuated by spells in prison. He said his experiences helped him work with children and young people who are having a similarly difficult time. Roadworks also does projects with podcasts, creative writing, photography and other creative activities.

Quince said: “This is what helped me start it up, for me I saw the power of being creative, coming up with ideas, to empower you to think more broader than what is going on in the streets. I asked ‘what sort of support would I have wanted?’

He added that he is “able to share [his] story with young individuals, get them to relate to me.

“As much as stuff is going on in the streets, a lot of the time there are issues going on at home. Those are the things that I can help young people navigate.

The plague of county lines Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark is among the worst boroughs for county-lines drug dealing - the practice in which older dealers send out children and young people across the country to sell on their behalf.

Southwark has the fifth-highest number of people involved in the out-of-London drugs trade, behind Croydon, Lambeth, Newham and Brent. Lewisham and Greenwich came immediately afterwards.

Police found 1,784 young people - aged up to 25 - across the whole of London who were involved in county lines in 2020/21.

No exact figures were available for Southwark, but a report commissioned

by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said there were between 83 and 138.

Despite Southwark being among the worst boroughs for the number of vulnerable people involved in county lines, it was well down the list for the amount of young people referred to support services, at tenth. Some 24 young people were referred to support services

in Southwark last year, up four from the year before.

Southwark’s worst areas for county lines involvement were around the Old Kent Road and north Peckham, with Camberwell and Bermondsey also relatively high. Young people in Dulwich were the least affected.

The report looked at the ‘rescue and response’ project set up by Khan in 2018 to tackle county lines, working with charities St Giles Trust, Safer London and Abianda, as well as the police. The project aims to ‘rescue’ young people caught up in county lines by giving them support and showing them that they have opportunities outside crime.

Just over half of the young people referred to the service in 2020/21, the third year of the project, were black - an increase of eight per cent since the start of rescue and response. But young white women were more likely than young women of any other ethnicity to be referred.

Interestingly, the Covid-19 pandemic did not have an impact on the number of people involved in county lines, report authors said, despite the effect on young people’s mental health.

Discussing the film, Quince said: “Really, in effect, what we’re hoping is that it will help to reduce crime, deter some young people away from gangs and violence. It provides an opportunity for marginalised young people to take part

in a creative activity.”

Karl and Jordan are interested in carrying on making films after The Escape Plan ends, but also have other strings to their bow.

Karl said: “I’ve got a lot going on for me. I ain’t just focusing on movies, I’m focusing on music, I’m focusing on college right now.

“For me, I look at stuff really different.

Like right now I know by the time I’m 20 I’ve got multiple sources of income, you get me.”

“I want to be the person that shows people like me or black youth in the community that anything is possible.

Yeah obviously because man went jail and school wasn’t that great for me, but there’s still hope out there.”

Jordan is also a musician, going by the name Loomz. He said: “It’s important to say it’s not drill.” Drill is a kind of music that some, like police and politicians, have linked with gang activity and stabbings because of lyrics that often discuss violence.

Others, including some people in the industry, have argued against that, saying that the music is a reflection of artists’ circumstances, rather than encouraging violence. Jordan said his music was “more lyrical” than drill.

Quince was full of praise for his two young charges, describing Jordan as “a real shining light to youngsters” with “really good ethics”.

Jordan has had previous dealings in Peckham, which, according to Quince, means he is putting himself at risk even taking part in the film production there. Quince and other members of the production team meet Jordan at the station to avoid anyone attacking him.

“Jordan has shown a lot of dedication, putting himself out and travelling into areas where he is putting himself at risk,” Quince said.

Meanwhile Karl has overcome lots of challenges, Quince said and is “still being challenged today.”

He said: “He’s fallen off but he’s got back on. He remains committed, he’s resilient.”

Filming is starting in under two weeks, and the production team are still looking to fill some roles in the cast.

theatre peckham is a leading light

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk The CEO and Artistic Director of Theatre Peckham, Suzann McLean, has been nominated for the 2022 Black British Business Awards (BBBAwards).

The BBBAwards celebrate the exceptional performance and outstanding achievements of black professionals and business owners in the UK. Since joining Theatre Peckham, Havil Street, in 2018, she has helped it establish its own academy, win an ‘Offie Award’, and nurture a community where people are their “unapologetic selves”.

An actor and director herself, her projects have seen graduates head to the West End and win BAFTA awards.

The 48-year-old born and bred Londoner said winning the award “was genuinely such a a surprise”.

“Arts charities, not being commercial

entities, are areas that get left out of thinking about business and business achievements. People tend to think of value as based on financial value”, she said.

Founded in 1985, Theatre Peckham showcases and serves aspiring local talent, often those from marginalised communities.

But before Suzann joined, the theatre was seeing people begin their journey at Theatre Peckham, but then heading elsewhere.

She said: “We were finding that people would train and drop off at the ages of fourteen and sixteen and go to other places. John Boyega’s story is that and I totally respect that.

“But now we have a strong structure in place with our academy which goes up to sixteen and the Young Peckham Offer which goes up to 25.”

the skills and inspiration they need to succeed in creative industries.

Suzann says the schemes aim to “develop the talent of young people and give marginalised communities the opportunity to be unapologetically themselves”.

She added: “In my time at drama school it was about neutralising who you are as a person to become an actor and then you take on these other forms.

“Things felt more robotic - trying to pretend ‘we can’t see that you’re black’. I want you to see me!”

Asked whether detaching from the self wasn’t an important part of acting, Suzann said: “100 per cent you are taking on a role but your physical attributes are still present so you can’t deny that.

“You are given the circumstances of a character, which are obviously different from me and my background, but how I share that still comes from my own body.”

Suzann said one of her proudest

achievements at Theatre Peckham was putting on their contemporary performance of the 90s Channel 4 sitcom ‘Desmond’s’.

She also enjoyed winning an Offie Award which she said “recognised the work we do as a whole rather than a specific production which encapsulates who we are as an organisation”.

With Prime Ministerial hopeful Liz Truss recently announcing she would ditch ‘diversity and inclusion’ jobs in the civil service, the News asked Suzann why she believes inclusion is important in the business industry.

Suzann said: “For me the point we need to get to is saying that it doesn’t matter and that any role and any opportunity out there will be given after a fair process.

“The problem is that to make it fair, society has had to put this stuff in.

Organisations have been honest and said they have biases and because those organisations have biases there has to be

“If you get kids together from different estates they get to know each other. Then, when the postcode thing is happening, and somebody wants to kick someone else in the head, they’ll say ‘No - he’s from Unity!’”

Unity FC volunteer Louisa Douglas, 41, has a seven-year-old son on the team. She said: “If the kids are not helped from an early age, by the time they go to secondary school, it’s already too late.”

Unity FC, founded in 2016, is led by football coach Peter Bafour, 54, local dad Matt Downing, 51, and other volunteers.

“It’s grown enormously, from a few kids having a kick-about and now we’ve got ten teams and turned into a proper club”, said Matt.

The Summer Camp has been made possible by £10,000 funding from the Mayor of London’s ‘Sport Unites’ fund which was matched by charity federation Groundwork.

More than £20,000 funding provides shin pads, bibs, and boots for every child who trains, and pays coaches £15 per hour, significantly over the London Living Wage.

Peter Bafour, who used to coach Lambeth Tigers, said: “When I first came here it was really bad. People were scared to come out because of the reputation of Kennington Park and of children being stabbed.

Camp has taken place following a successful first run in the summer of 2021.

Nat Stevens said since then, police data shows drug dealing has dropped by 50% on the neighbouring Brandon Estate. “We’re putting drug dealers out of business”, he said.

Left-winger and Arsenal fan Uche, 9, who now plays for Wimbledon FC after being scouted at last year’s Unity Summer Football Club, said: “We did dribbling, matches and an obstacle course, and then

a lot more dribbling.”

She said it was “fun” but after a long morning running around in the sun “you just have to slouch”.

Denzel, a 7-year-old Man United fan said he’d learned “agility and how to control the ball”. His favourite player is Ronaldo The Newington Unity All Stars Summer Football Club is running from July 25 to September 2. Sessions are 10am to 1pm for U11s and 2pm to 5pm for the Senior Camp.

The Kennington summer football camp keeping kids off the streets

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A summer football club in Kennington Park has been set up to end “the postcode wars” and “put drug dealers out of business”.

This summer, the Newington Unity All Stars Summer Football Club is inviting kids from numerous Southwark estates to free five-day-a-week football sessions.

Tragically, stabbings are a common occurrence in Southwark’s Newington ward. Since November 2021, there have been at least four stabbings on the Brandon Estate alone.

The aim of the club is to nurture friendships between children from an early age to protect them from gang culture, often characterised by rivalries between different areas known as ‘postcode wars’.

Children from the Brandon One, Brandon Two, Brandon Three, Conant and Rutley, Doddington, Grosvenor, Pasley, Pelier, Penrose and Surrey Gardens estates are all entitled to free Summer Camp passes.

Southwark Council Housing Manager Nat Stevens has helped organise the club.

He said: “The idea is to nurture these relationships between the children who are initiated.

“Kids are aware of the bad things that are happening around them and the idea is to help them through other aspirations

Rise united in Bermondsey

Rise United, who train at the City of London Academy (COLA) Southwark pitches on Lynton Road, won won the under-fourteen division of the London County Saturday youth football league with fifteen wins out of fifteen. The under-fifteen team came second in its

division.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Coyle and local councillor for the south Bermondsey ward Sunny Lambe handed the trophy to the winning side at a ceremony at COLA, as well as giving speeches.

Last season was Rise United’s first.

Daniel Alfred, who helps run the club along with head coach Simone Bonfiglio and secretary Vincent Ikpefa, said the founders’ main aim in setting up Rise United was to “instil discipline in children within south-east London.”

Brandon Two, Brandon Three, Conant and Rutley, Doddington, Grosvenor, Pasley, Pelier, Penrose and Surrey Gardens Estates are all entitled to free Summer Camp passes.

If your child does not leave on these estates, Unity FC is encouraging parents to get in touch anyway, saying:“We’ve never turned anyone away in the basis they can’t play. People can pay what they can afford.”

A summer of inspiration for Southwark’s young people

he England national team’s victory at the 2022 Euro’s is nothing short of game changing.

England women’s team ended

a 56-year trophy drought in front of nearly 90,000 elated fans, the largest ever attendance for a men’s or women’s match in the history of the European Championships.

English football fans have had their share of cup final heartbreak, most recently just over one year ago at Wembley, when the men’s team lost to Italy in a penalty shootout. It was an incredible feeling for English people to see their national team lift a major international trophy under that famous Wembley arch. Finally, it has come home.

Sunday’s game and the Lionesses will have inspired a generation of girls and boys to pick up a football and perhaps become a future national hero.

Football, and sport more generally, have levelled the playing field across backgrounds and we are now witnessing the exciting growth of women’s football, inspiring our

An amazing mural of Fran Kirby, on our very own Kirby Estate, is a testament to the growing profile of the women’s game: We are very excited that Fran, now a European Championship winner, is set to sign the artwork herself in the near future.

We have seen the amazing impact of what strong role models and good local sport facilities can inspire people to achieve, not just in football, but in all sports. Peckham’s own Olympic medallist Kye Whyte picked up another medal at this year’s BMX Racing World Cup using the skills he learned at our BMX track in Burgess Park.

Stories like this show why it is so important that kids in Southwark, many of whom will have watched England’s victory, have the opportunity to find a sport they love.

That’s’ why we are investing over £8 million in a full upgrade of Burgess Park sports centre, with two new full sized FA standard 4G pitches, plus a new ball court designed to a full wheelchair use standard and a new club house and changing rooms.

There will be a further £1.5 million invested into the upgrade of our Brimmington Park Sports Centre, to provide five high quality 3G five-aside pitches.

It’s also why we are delivering a

whole new leisure centre, with pool, gym, three studios and a 4-court sports hall at Canada Water.

These fantastic new facilities will add to over £48.8 million of new and upgraded Southwark sports centres, pitches and tracks that your Labourrun council has delivered since 2010. Including our Olympic medal producing Southwark Athletics Centre, Herne Hill Velodrome and Burgess Park BMX track.

This investment in sport is just one part of our investment in Southwark’s young people. We want every child in our borough to have the best opportunities to channel newfound passions into fun and engaging activities, including those whose families are struggling to make ends meet.

That is why we have also invited children and young people to join our Summer of Food and Fun, an activity programme for children aged 4 to 16 on benefits related free school meals which will ensure that everyone, no matter their background, can enjoy free, nutritious and tasty food, and access physical activities.

Southwark has funded 39 providers who will be running 56 programmes across the borough. The programme kicked off on the 25th July and will run until 26th August. It includes multi-sports camps in Southwark’s many fantastic parks and of course, many opportunities to play football and practice an Ella Toone-inspired chip, or even an audacious Alessia Russo-style back heel. It is not just about football with something for everyone, from youth clubs to theatre workshops, aiming to promote mental and physical wellbeing.

Alongside this, I’m also really excited about our new Positive Futures for Young People Fund programme of commissioned youth activities, which went live in April.

Among these are 20 different services ranging from sports, arts and crafts, drama, cooking and healthy eating, CV writing, budgeting and money management, mentoring, confidence building and lots more.

In Southwark we are determined that our young people succeed that’s why, whatever their passion, we will keep investing in their future.

ne of the favourite parts of my role as a Member of Parliament is the regular visits that I have to our local primary and secondary schools and to welcome pupils and students to visit Parliament, supported by the excellent Parliamentary Education team (learning.parliament.uk)

We have fantastic schools across Southwark and Lambeth, and I am proud of the work that our hard working, committed teachers and school support staff do to support every student to achieve their very best.

Next week students from across Southwark and Lambeth will receive their A-level and BTEC results, with GCSE and BTEC results being announced the following week.

This is the time of year for celebrating the culmination of years of hard work in A-level, GCSE and BTEC results which enable students to go on the next stage of their education, training or working life confident and well equipped to thrive.

I want to wish every student the very best of luck with their results and to say thank you to every teacher and parent who has supported them along the way.

As a mum of two teenagers, I know how difficult the last few years have been for students to stay motivated and focused when they have had to time learning from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and how much they have missed out on in terms of time with friends, hands-on learning experiences and extracurricular activities.

The reasons for keeping our bus routes could not be more convincing

W

e’ve been banging on about the buses for more than two months now. Transport for London (TfL) first announced the consultation on cutting sixteen bus routes back at the start of June, when we were all joyfully celebrating the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

Three of the four Southwark bus routes that TfL is considering cutting go back as far as 1952, when Elizabeth II first ascended to the throne. The 12 bus route started in the 1850s, according to a 1970s history of London transport. The 78 and the 45 also both go back at least as far as the 1950s.

These things matter for symbolic reasons - it’s a shame to lose a part of south London’s modern history, and many of our readers will feel strong emotional attachments to these buses - but there are also practical reasons why the routes have lasted as long as they have: they work and people need them.

We reported this week on the fact that some of the Southwark routes that TfL could be cutting have actually had more passengers in some weeks this year than before the pandemic.

That includes the N12 night bus, taking both tired night workers and partygoers home from central London to the south. Of course, the 148 route will be changed to take up some of the slack - but there will still be fewer buses than before, and vulnerable people will undoubtedly be left with a longer wait in the dark for their bus to take them home.

There is a similar argument for the BBC’s classified football results on the radio, which the corporation announced this week it was taking off air after more than 40 years. Yes, both the old bus routes and the classified results are a nice bit of heritage and nostalgia for some.

But actually, many other people rely on them. Yes, those people may be older, poorer and generally less visible than the people who now check their results online, or who can afford to take Ubers home late at night. But their needs, and their safety, are just as important - and publicly-funded bodies like TfL and the BBC should remember that.

The consultation, having been extended, is now over and it will be up to the TfL to take on board all the comments and see how vital it is to keep our bus routes. South London has and continues to be starved of tube stations. There is no sign of the much needed Bakerloo Line Extension getting approval and places like Camberwell have had decade-long campaigns for a railway station. The decision on the bus routes will be made later this year - let’s hope they have listened to people of Southwark, from all political persuasions, who have put up great campaigns to keep them.

GUY’S HEAD AND NECK CANCER CENTRE CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY GUY’S AND St Thomas’ specialist head and neck cancer centre celebrated its one-year anniversary in July.

Opened with the support of charitable donations to Guy’s Cancer Charity, Guy’s Head and Neck Cancer Centre brings together a range of programmes and services to offer patients the best possible care.

The centre aims to speed up the diagnosis for head and neck cancer patients, improve the ways they are treated for their condition and provide state-of-the-art support services to improve the quality of life for those living with and beyond head and neck cancer.

Innovative research is a key focus of the centre and one such study is using the tumour tissue of patients to grow ‘organoids’ and test them

with different cancer treatments with varying doses to assess their treatment sensitivity. Organoids are a simple 3-dimensional version of a tissue that are produced in a laboratory which closely resemble the original tumours and can be used by scientists to study disease and treatments outside of the human body.

Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer globally, with more than 650,000 people diagnosed annually. Around 1,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with head and neck cancer every month.

Guy’s Cancer Charity is undertaking further fundraising to continue to fund Guy’s Cancer Centre’s transformative programme for head and neck cancer patients and further enhance the care they receive.

MOBILE COVID-19 JAB SERVICE GIVES HOUSEBOUND PATIENTS A BOOST Sara Hayley, a vaccinator, with patient, Beatrice Smith

As COVID-19 infection rates continue to rise, Guy’s and St Thomas’vaccination team are going into people’s homes to give the most vulnerable housebound patients the vital protection they need.

The outreach team help to vaccinate people with social, emotional or physical concerns who find it particularly difficult to visit vaccination centres.

These include people with extreme mobility problems and those with mental health issues which make being in busy environments challenging.

Beatrice Smith, 77, from Peckham, who has several health problems

including heart failure, cellulitis and depression, has been housebound for four years due to mobility issues. She has a social care worker who visits to wash and dress her and to provide general care twice a day. Beatrice said: ”I cannot walk on my own, I have to have help. I’m mostly in my armchair all day.

“I had my fourth COVID-19 jab at the end of June and I’ve had no trouble at all.

It means I don’t have to shuffle about to get to the vaccination centre somehow. I just had to sit here, pull my arm out and the nurse did it straight away. I didn’t feel a prick at all. It’s wonderful that they came to me, they were brilliant.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ work collaboratively with colleagues in the South East London Integrated Care system, including GPs, to identify which patients need additional support to get the vaccine.

Lily Harrington, a vaccination sister at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “Many people like Beatrice are keen to have the vaccine but they have no way of getting out or find it very difficult, so that’s why it’s really important for us to reach out to them.

“We are trying to reach as many people as possible, while they still have some immunity against COVID-19. It may seem like housebound patients are not that much at risk because they are not going out into the community or going down to the shops, but they still have a lot of people coming in and out of their homes - carers, family and friends.

“There is still that element of risk for them and many of these patients have a lot of underlying health problems that make them more vulnerable. It’s incredibly important for them to get the COVID-19 vaccine so they are protected.”

I ♥ RESEARCH ACADEMY

Head and neck cancer team

OUR I ♥ Research Academy returned with 30 eager and enthusiastic students in July.

Over the course of three days, students completed 12 interactive online workshops delivered by researchers from across King’s Health Partners.

Following the completion of this

first stage, the students are now working with mentors on a sixweek project. Their findings will be presented at a special I ♥ Research Academy youth conference on 30 August.

The Academy is organised by the Research and Development team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and its

NIHR Biomedical Research Centre.

Supported by Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity and King’s Health Partners, it engages long-term with young people from our local communities.

what’s on My prejudices were tested at National She apologises for being late and goes to open the book. The stage is set for what I assumed was a dramatisation of a conversation between a disabled woman and someone offering support.

In fact, it is the beginning of a therapy session and the woman with the notebook is the client. So begins ‘All of Us’ a new play at the National Theatre written by Francesca Martinez, who also plays therapist Jess, the main character.

I suspect I wasn’t the only person who had their prejudices revealed by this scene. If you think you might have made the same assumptions then this play is a powerful work of potential education. The story continues by exposing the systemic injustice faced in general by those who do not fit the mould of perfectly able-bodied, the ways in which this was made worse by austerity measures, and the many and varied societal barriers to them living a full life.

The acting and script are mostly strong. The three central characters are Jess, Lottie her gay and pregnant flatmate, and Poppy, a fierce and vibrant young female wheelchair user who ‘just wants to have fun’ but is reduced to a 9pm bedtime wearing a nappy, by the defunding of her night

time care.

‘Nothing about us without us’ is the demand of those often minoritised by wider society and so it is great to see disability represented so richly at the National Theatre. The writing is provocative and at times humorous, with some great one-liners delivered particularly by Jess who manages the vicissitudes of life with grace and humour.

Strangely, this piece of political theatre lacked nuance and at times descended into stereotype and over simplistic plot devices. It felt both too neat and slightly too long. Issues such as the sheer rage-inducing awfulness of the assessment process for PIP etc, the staggering death toll of people with disabilities from Covid, and the appallingly short time allocations of carers are headlined and personified.

They would have increased in power if not jostling for position with the question of why people vote for a rightwing party that does not really care about them and why boarding school is a privileged form of child abuse.

I wanted more rage and more complexity. The play could have done with editing to provide more space for the arresting central performances and their stories to resolve in more believable ways.

The Globe’s summer show ‘The Tempest’ is a pantomime equivalent for these sunnier months, writes Hannah Kelly...

From the budgie smuggler-clad Prospero, to the fools of the play (Stefano and Trinculo), there is a lot of buffoonery. This makes for a good laugh and some genuine fun. Though it risks getting lost in the slapstick and missing the relational punch that Shakespeare’s script brings.

Rachel Hannah Clarke was a particular highlight for me. Her portrayal of Ariel was powerful, joyful, witty and yet emotive - the longing for freedom made tangible. Ralph Davis and George Fouracres were also priceless as Stefano and Trinculo. They were able to own the stage and the crowd, drawing in the

biggest laughs with their easy humour.

Ciaran O’Brien’s Caliban was particularly wonderful, a little less monster, a little more human. He and Clarke as Ariel have compassionate portrayals of their enslaved characters, thus revealing the problematic darker side of Prospero’s use of them both for his own ends Costumes were excellent and the appearance of a Harry Potter dress-up cameo was a crowd pleaser.

The music was also perfectly timed and created the mysterious, magical, island atmosphere that is at the centre of the play.

These elements, along with the stage design, complimented one another brilliantly to sell the tempest setting - though again the sense of true magic

felt a little lacking in the ‘bad-islandbar’ feel of the set.

Though I enjoyed the humour and found the play easy to watch, it was harder to believe the relational connections between the characters.

Neither the love scenes nor the reunion between estranged brothers felt particularly emotionally charged. This meant that by the end of the play it felt like something had been missing.

On the whole, this production of the Tempest is fun and a light laugh for a less emotionally charged evening.

The tragic tale of nine Walworth scouts who drowned off the coast of Sheppey 110 years ago

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk 110 years ago, on August 4 1912, a team of boy scouts from Walworth perished off the coast of the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. It’s the story of camping trip turned tragedy which grabbed national headlines, upset Winston Churchill and, bizarrely, involves David Beckham.

In 1912, life was tough for Southwark’s youth. Most of the lads in this story lived around Brandon Street, Walworth, would have lived in slum conditions, worked full-time jobs from as young as thirteen, and have been well-versed in toil and drudgery of everyday life.

So when the 2nd Walworth Boys left from Waterloo Bridge, setting sail for Sheppey, on Saturday, August 3 1912, they would have looked forward to two weeks of respite. Long nights under canvas, campfires and gazing up at the stars lay in wait for the 24 boys.

At 9pm they reached Erith, a town halfway down the Thames, where they pitched tents overnight before setting out at 4am the next morning. Despite their age, the boys were experienced boatmen, and it’s unlikely they’d have worried about navigating the final 26 nautical mile stretch.

But two miles off the coast, disaster struck. A stiff wind caught the sail and their boat capsized, plunging the entire crew into the icy waters. The Leysdown lifeboat crew, themselves in rickety rowing boats, set off to save them.

At the time, Chief Petty Coastguard Officer Streeter said: “The scene was pitiable in the extreme and one we shall

never forget.”

They saved sixteen of the boys, who spent the next few days being cared for the coastguards’ wives. Among those were Edward Beckham, believed to the the great-grandfather of England and Manchester United legend David Beckham.

But tragically nine boys drowned in the violent storm, with one of their bodies only being found weeks later in Margate on August 15.

It was a story that immediately seized the nation’s attention. Heart-wrenching photos of the scouts carrying their friends in child-sized coffins draped in union jacks played on the country’s heart strings.

Prime Minister Winston Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty, was so

shocked he ordered a naval destroyer - the HMS Fervent - to transport the bodies back to London.

The coffins were taken to St John’s Church, Larcom Road, Walworth, where more than 100,000 people passed through to pay their respects.

On August 10, their funerals were held, with newspapers of the day saying that one million people lined the procession from St John’s to Nunhead Cemetery where the boys are buried. Reporters said how it was day of torrential rain and wind - a model of pathetic fallacy.

A bronze life-size scout was erected in Nunhead Cemetery in 1914, paid for by public donations and designed

by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed the iconic red telephone box. Sadly, it was stolen in 1969, so a

new replacement memorial of Carrara marble was erected in 1992, which still stands today.

A tribute from the Sheppey Church Magazine read: “The pens of journalists have flowed fully and freely in giving the world the sad details of the Black Sunday which will never be forgotten by those who saw the capsizing of the cutter.

“We were looking forward to the visit of the Dulwich Mission Boy Scouts who created such a favourable impression by their cheerful obedience and spirit of good comradeship during their time in camp last year.

“They were such a happy lot, always doing with their might whatever came to hand; cricket or washing-up became equally a thing to be done with a fine

enthusiasm.

“Fooling round doing nothing seemed to be quite an unknown way of killing time.

“Nine well-disciplined Christian lads were drowned in sight of their camping ground and we were not surprised to find that the heart of England was moved in sympathy.

“One cannot help thinking of the future usefulness of these boys if they had been spared. It would not have been fanciful to picture one of the lads as a Labour leader, another a foreman of works, another as zealous in church work; but God has ordained their lives on a different plan.

“In Paradise they will grow in the knowledge and in grace free from the temptations of the world.”

By Mark Baldwin sport@southwarknews.co.uk TAILENDERS NICK Kimber and Matt Dunn swung and swiped Surrey to a miracle Royal London Cup tie against Warwickshire in front of a captivated Kia Oval crowd of almost 5,000.

Kimber thumped six sixes and six fours in a remarkable 51-ball 84 and fellow seamer Dunn then hit Ollie Hannon-Dalby for two sixes in his 34 before, with the scores level and every fielder up in the ring, he was bowled by a Liam Norwell yorker trying to hit a winning blow from the first ball of the final over.

Dunn, with just 19 runs in total from his previous 13 one-day matches, almost got Surrey home after Kimber had been dismissed with 31 more runs needed from the last 27 balls as they chased Warwickshire’s 293 for 5.

Surrey’s No.11 Yousuf Majid, an 18-yearold playing his first senior innings, remained 5 not out in Surrey’s 293 all out but it was Kimber, 21, and with a top score of just 27 from his previous five List A appearances, who was the main hero of the hour after seeing his team struggle initially to 184 for 7.

Earlier wicketkeeper-batsman Michael Burgess starred against his native county and he and Indian international allrounder Krunal Pandya were the standout performers for Warwickshire.

Kimber hinted at an extraordinary turnaround when took three sixes in one Rob Yates over and he also struck six fours in a brilliant effort that was only cut short when Pandya bowled him through an attempted cut with his left-arm spin in the 46th over.

But Dunn would not accept defeat in his own 19-ball effort, drawing the scores level with a single off Pandya from the last ball of the penultimate over, immediately after swinging him to mid-wicket for his second four.

Norwell’s yorker denied Surrey a memorable win but, thanks to Kimber and Dunn, it was still a great display by a youthful Surrey line-up. For the third Royal London fixture running, they fielded an entirely uncapped team featuring nine players aged 24 or under. Nico Reifer, 21, also hit a defiant 53 that included two big sixes over long on, off Hannon-Dalby and Norwell.

Burgess, who was born in Epsom and played for Surrey from under-13 to Second XI level but then represented Leicestershire and Sussex before moving to Edgbaston in 2019, hit a classy List A best 93 from only 78 balls, with two sixes and nine fours, and put on 160 in 25.4 overs for the fourth wicket with Pandya, whose often powerful 74 occupied 82 balls.

Their stand rallied Warwickshire after they had stalled to 89 for 3 in the 21st

Surrey’s Nick Kimber over, after opting to bat first in gloriously sunny conditions, and was a List A fourth wicket record for Warwickshire against Surrey. It beat the previous mark of 108, between Jim Troughton and Alex Loudon, at Croydon’s Whitgift School in 2005.

Warwickshire lost Dom Sibley for 5 in the seventh over, leg-before to Dunn trying to whip a straight ball towards mid wicket, but fellow opener Yates followed up his 87 in Warwickshire’s win against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham last Tuesday by scoring a solid 66-ball 54 in a second wicket alliance of 62 with Will Rhodes.

Yates dominated the partnership, completing his half-century with a rasping square cut for four off Conor McKerr just before falling to the same bowler later in the over, skying to mid on.

And, two balls later at the start of the 21st over, off spinner Amar Virdi had Rhodes caught at the wicket, pushing defensively, for 15.

Virdi impressed in a ten-over spell of 1 for 35 but Burgess and Pandya both batted carefully at first to rebuild the innings before accelerating effortlessly in the second half of their superb stand.

Tailenders post remarkable tally Warwickshire’s total was 191 for 3 after 40 overs, but 102 runs were plundered from the last ten overs as Pandya swung two sixes to add to his five fours and Burgess took successive legside sixes off McKerr before mis-hitting the next ball to deep mid wicket.

Ethan Brookes and Matt Lamb both scored useful runs to further boost the total, with McKerr’s ten overs eventually costing 79 as the fast bowler bore the brunt of Warwickshire’s late assault.

Surrey’s reply got off to a bad start, with Ben Geddes dragging a widish swinging ball from Hannon-Dalby into his own stumps to go for 9 in the fifth over and the total quickly slipping to 31 for 3 as Ryan Patel edged Hannon-Dalby to first slip on 14, soon after pulling him over mid wicket for six, and Cameron Steel was pinned legbefore for 0 by Craig Miles.

All-rounder Tom Lawes, 19, had earlier athletically caught and bowled Pandya and acquitted himself well with the ball and now, in at No 5, batted well for 28 before lifting a catch off Rhodes’s second ball.

And Reifer then joined 23-year old Josh Blake in a fifth wicket stand of 57 before Blake thin-edged a swipe at Miles to

keeper Burgess to fall for a 55-ball 40.

Reifer’s maiden List A half-century ended when Lamb dived to pull off a fine catch at deep mid wicket, and Norwell was again the successful bowler when McKerr (2) edged to Burgess. Virdi was run out for 8, to make it 223 for 8, but by then Kimber’s big hitting had given Surrey a chance – and they almost pulled it off.

Surrey had needed 101 from the last 10 overs with just three wickets left and Kimber said: “That does feel a little bit special and now we can go to our next match, against Middlesex at Radlett, with increased confidence.

“Although it was a tie in the end it definitely feels more like a win and when I went in with just under 20 overs to go I just tried to get us to a position from where we could get something out of the game.

Matt Dunn batted brilliantly too and was very calm when he came in and we still needed 70. I couldn’t actually watch those last few overs after I got out.”

Jacks tipped to be star of Hundred

By Matt Gilby sport@southwarknews.co.uk OVAL INVINCIBLES captain Sam Billings believes Will Jacks can become a star of The Men’s Hundred after he smashed the best individual score of the 2022 tournament.

The 23-year-old made 81 from 45 balls to take Invincibles to a comprehensive 39-run victory against Welsh Fire in Cardiff last Sunday and further furnish his growing reputation.

“He put the game out of distance for them with a real class knock,” said Billings, who will captain Jacks for England Lions this week after they were both called up to play South Africa.

“He had the composure to sit in and sit in before going hard at the end. It was a coming-of-age knock for him in this format.

“We’ve seen him be so good this year with the red ball, and how destructive he can be, but today was a different type of knock.”

Billings also backed his team-mate Jason Roy to regain his form after a difficult summer for the Surrey and England opener.

“We have the utmost faith in him as a squad,” Billings said.

“We know that towards the back end of this tournament, if he is firing and in form, it will put us in a much better place.

“We’ve played so much together in different franchises around the world.

We’ve both been able to chat to each other during difficult periods before and we’ve been here before. It is a matter of being there for him, being supportive and being a mate.”

Jacks was happy with the team’s performance and described the winning margin as “comfortable”.

“We figured early on that it wasn’t the easiest wicket to get under the ball,” said Jacks.

“We found it hard up top because it was skidding in low. That’s why we started reasonably slowly. It was about taking it deep and using our wickets in hand.”

“That was pretty convincing in the end, really good. A 39-run win is pretty good in 100-ball cricket.

“The Hundred is the most relaxing month of the season. We have eight games to play, whereas in June we had 20 days of cricket. We are quite enjoying the tournament.”

Relaxation of the fielding restrictions, coupled with an excellent spell by leg spinner Ahmed Khan, slowed their progress for a while. Khan claimed the wicket of Angus Lovell for a 69 ball 70, but Freddie Geffen advanced to his century and was eventually dismissed for 123, off 127 balls.

The middle order helped him keep the score moving at an everincreasing rate, and a breezy knock of 24 not out off eight balls by Tom Humphreys helped lift the Guildford

on 199, and it took him just five balls to dismiss Khan and claim his third wicket. Khan had made 35 off 37 balls, while Waqar remained unbeaten with 32 off 17.

Dulwich gained just four points from this defeat and slip back to the bottom of the table, though they are still only thirteen points behind Beddington in eighth place.

This weekend, they visit Banstead, who are currently fourth. Dulwich got a losing draw in their first encounter and will be looking to recapture the form of the last few weeks to secure a victory in the return fixture.

sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET boss Gavin Rose felt his side were “resilient” and played some “really promising football” as they kicked off their 2022-23 National League South campaign with a dramatic 2-1 win against a youthful Braintree Town last weekend.

A sunny afternoon at Champion Hill was the backdrop as Dulwich looked to start the season positively. They welcomed a Braintree side that had made mass changes to the squad that finished seventeenth in the last campaign.

Things got off to a shaky start for the home side, as Braintree right-back Baris Altintop stooped to head a low corner against the crossbar. A succession of corners followed, but all were dealt with well by the Hamlet.

After a cagey opening, the game really picked up around the 20-minute mark.

First, two Hamlet defenders linked up as Joe Felix, playing on the right, curled in a cross which was met by Will Wood, who was playing left centre-back, but he could only hook his effort over.

A minute later, Dulwich talisman Danny Mills beat Kyan Clements to a bouncing ball and rounded goalkeeper Jack Sims, but he ran out of space and his deflected shot was cleared.

The pressure was building as the home crowd began to lift their team. Not long after skipper Jack Holland had his header from a corner cleared off the line, Dulwich did take the lead. Andre Blackman, who constantly exploited Braintree’s right-hand side, clipped a cross to the back post, Mills knocked his header back across the box and George Porter was on hand to grab a debut goal with a tap-in. After such a strong first half, Dulwich appeared to struggle to take the game to their opponents in the second. Blades cut Millwall to pieces

Last season, the Lions had the third best home record in the Championship, but they were ranked seventeenth in the division based on away performances, winning just five games on the road.

To an extent, the defeat away at Cambridge can be brushed under the carpet given that the match took place in the Carabao Cup. However, the Lions travelled to Bramall Lane in a much more optimistic mood given their impressive recent record against Sheffield United.

Gary Rowett’s side did the double over the Blades last season but arrived in South Yorkshire as underdogs given their injury issues. Zian Flemming and Tom Bradshaw missed the match through injury, while George Honeyman was serving a one-match ban for his red card against Cambridge. Just before the line-ups were posted, it was revealed that Ryan Leonard was ruled out through illness, with the former Sheffield United man suffering from tonsillitis.

The bad news suddenly became much worse as Millwall conceded the first goal just seven minutes into the game. Wes Foderingham’s goal kick bounced over the Millwall defence as Rhian Brewster barged Jake Cooper out of the way, allowing Iliman Ndiaye to pick up the loose ball, brush past Murray Wallace and slot the ball under Bartosz Białkowski for a 1-0 lead.

After the game, Rowett was adamant that Brewster’s challenge on Cooper was a foul, but his complaints fell on deaf ears and his side would be 2-0 down just a few minutes later.

Norwood stepped up to take the spot-kick, having almost scored from the half-way line in the opening stages of the match, but his effort was saved by Białkowski, keeping Millwall in the game going into the break.

Ultimately, the penalty save didn’t impact the outcome of the game, it merely saved the Lions’ from an even more embarrassing defeat. While they looked far more confident after the restart, they continued to struggle in the final third and failed to test Foderingham in the Blades’ net. They finished the match with just one shot on target, a tame headed effort from Wallace

that was easily held by the former Rangers goalkeeper.

Worryingly, it dragged the concerns of Tuesday’s defeat at The Abbey into Millwall’s Championship campaign. While Rowett would surely have loved to have drawn a line under the performance, it will now need to be addressed after consecutive defeats where the Lions mustered just two shots on goal across 180 minutes of football.

Of course, this was just the third competitive match of the campaign and Rowett was quick to point out how the absences had impacted his team. The main concern comes from how avoidable both goals were, even if the first would’ve been ruled out for a foul based on the rules of previous campaigns.

Given how strong Millwall were at the back against Stoke, this was a huge contrast. Much of the early optimism has dissipated after the defeat, and Rowett will undoubtedly be desperate to get back to winning ways in front of their own fans against Coventry City on Saturday.

Lions relishing return to The Den after consecutive defeats matCh details

MILLWALL’S RETURN to The Den couldn’t come soon enough.

Both of the Lions’ last two games were away from home, losing 1-0 away at Cambridge United in the Carabao Cup and 2-0 against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

It was a major surprise given how impressive Gary Rowett’s side looked at home to Stoke City on the opening day, where they beat Stoke City 2-0 thanks to Charlie Cresswell’s debut brace. Millwall dominated the game, albeit that they failed to create many clear-cut chances from open play.

But those handful of open-play chances were reduced to almost none against the U’s and the Blades, with the performance against the latter being severely hampered by a plethora of injuries, illnesses and suspensions. The Lions were without four first-team players for the game, and will hope to welcome back two of them against Coventry City this weekend.

Neither player will necessarily boost Millwall’s frontline, something which certainly needs to happen after going 180 minutes without scoring. However, Rowett will have more options at his disposal for Saturday’s match, which should certainly help their chances ahead of hosting the Sky Blues.

His opposite number, Mark Robins,

faces a totally different dilemma. Coventry were unable to play their scheduled match against Rotherham United on Sunday afternoon due to the state of the pitch at the Coventry Building Society Arena. The stadium was used for rugby sevens matches at the Commonwealth Games, leaving the pitch in an unplayable condition.

It means that Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Bristol City had to be moved to Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium at short notice, further complicating their

preparations ahead of their trip to South London.

Like Millwall, Coventry are gunning for a top-six finish after a number of impressive seasons. After winning the League One title in 2019-20, the Sky Blues went on to secure a sixteenth-place finish before climbing up to 12th last season.

They ended the campaign five points behind the Lions and eleven points off the play-offs.

As a result of the drama surrounding their pitch, Robins’ side have only played

one league game, a 1-1 draw away to Sunderland. They were forced to play without star-man Callum O’Hare, but were still able to rescue a point in the last few minutes of the game thanks to Viktor Gyökeres’ equaliser.

Rowett believes that the confusion surrounding Coventry’s build-up to the match won’t be detrimental to their performance on Saturday afternoon, with the Millwall boss expecting a competitive match-up similar to the two games they played against the Sky Blues last season.

The Lions were famously beaten 6-1 by Coventry when they played at Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s Stadium at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, but Rowett’s men were much more competitive in their two most recent games against the West Midlands-based side. The two sides drew 1-1 in their last meeting at The Den, with Millwall securing a 1-0 victory in the away match last season.

Three points would certainly provide a boost for Saturday’s hosts after a disappointing defeat in South Yorkshire, but nothing can be taken for granted in the Championship against a top-six rival.

The left-back made 22 appearances in the top flight when he signed for Huddersfield Town in 2017, helping the Terriers to secure a sixteenth-place finish despite being universally tipped for relegation.

It wasn’t easy, however. Malone describes Manchester City as his toughest opponent, recalling that his side “didn’t touch the ball” despite going into the half-time break 1-0 up. Seconds after the restart, he brought down Raheem Sterling in the box for a penalty, allowing the Cityzens to turn the match around and secure a 2-1 win.

Individually, he picks out Harry Kane.

“He was lethal, he scored a brace in 23 minutes,” he tells the News. “But that’s just the level, you give anyone the chance and they’ll take it from you.”

It’s the level that Millwall want to reach too, and Malone wants to help them take that next step. The Lions are yet to

secure a top six finish since returning to the Championship in 2017, but there are hopes that the club can return to the top flight for the first time in more than 30 years after a number of impressive campaigns.

“I think that every player in the Championship will turn around and say that they want to play in the Premier League with the club they’re at. With my age, I’m getting on a bit now, I’m 31.

George Honeyman said it when he came in, he wants to get to the Premier League with Millwall, I think I’m in the same boat.

“In the last couple of seasons, we’ve done really well. We were 90 minutes away from potentially reaching the playoffs so one step further this season is to get into the top six. I think we know what we need to get there.

“We need to win at home and pick up points away, then we’ll see where that leaves us.”

Crucially, Malone believes that his experience of top-level football can help Millwall’s promotion push, highlighting what the club needs to do in order to bridge the gap to the play-off places.

“It’ll only show towards the end of the season, going into games that we need to

win,” he admits.

“I’m there to steer the lads towards that direction, but we’ve recruited well over the summer and we’ve lost Jed [Wallace]. We need to replace his goals and assists, first and foremost.

There’s no shying away from that. He’s been doing it season in, season out for Millwall.

“But the recruitment has been good, we’ve got everything we need and there’s still three weeks left of the window. Who knows what can happen?”

That ambition for Championship success has been fuelled by the club’s activity in the transfer market. Millwall have signed six new players at the time of writing, with a seventh seemingly imminent according to manager Gary Rowett.

The facts and figures aren’t important for Malone, however, with the defender instead focused on how the Lions perform on the pitch.

“It’s okay saying that we’ve spent two million on that player and broke the transfer record, but you still need to produce it on the pitch. But the club is heading in the right direction, they’ve had a couple club-record bids rejected.

unfortunate with his knee and hasn’t been available, but that shouldn’t be too bad.

Success will only come with a strong squad, and Millwall were made to pay for their lack of depth on Saturday afternoon when they lost 2-0 at Bramall Lane.

“Against Sheffield United, we lost four senior players within a week through injury, illness or suspension,” Malone recalls. “That doesn’t help when preparing for an away game. When we get everyone back, we’ll see where we’re at.”

It does, however, emphasise the need for additional recruits, and Malone admits that the Lions will need a strong squad if they are to compete over the course of the season.

“Of course, we need bodies in the squad. It happened last season, we had nine senior players out for about four or five weeks. You can never account for that really, those freak scenarios. But especially in the Championship, you’re playing 46 games plus cup games.

“It’s Saturday / Tuesday pretty much every single week, and not everyone can play every minute of every game, it’s just impossible at this level.”

With that comes increased competition, something which the former Derby County man believes is crucial instead of intimidating. “You need competition everywhere,” he admits.

“Millwall have got players that can play in several positions. You look at Lenny [Ryan Leonard] who can play centre-mid, right wing-back, right of centre-half, probably in the middle if you want him to. Muzza [Murray Wallace] is the same - left wing-back, left-back, centre-back.

“Hutchy [Shaun Hutchinson], Cressy [Charlie Cresswell], Coops [Jake Cooper], we’re really strong in defensive areas. It helps when people can play in different positions as well so it’s not as rigid, it means that the manager has lots to choose from.

“Our defensive record has been quite solid over the last two years since I’ve been back. First and foremost, we need to carry that on because there’s no point of the club showing ambition in the transfer market and then us guys at the back leaking goals. You can’t do that.

“The competition is healthy, every club needs it and I think we’ve got that.”

The Lions’ thin squad was a major issue last season when they were hit by a number of absences, while manager Gary Rowett was missing three first-team players through injury or illness for Saturday’s defeat against Sheffield United.

One player who has often been dubbed, perhaps unfairly, as ‘injury prone’ by supporters is Mason Bennett. After all, the forward has played 40 Championship matches in the last two seasons, scoring six goals.

“To be honest, the past couple of years have been alright for me, especially being available for so many games,” he told the News.

“Whether I play or not isn’t up to me, I’ll work hard and I always will in order to get in the team, but I’m very happy with the state my body is in at the moment. I’ve had a good preseason under my belt.

“It’ll show what kind of player you are when you have back-to-back-toback games, especially when you’ve got a three game week. I think it’s important for me to stay fit and I’ll always know that the performances will come.”

Bennett realises that this isn’t enough for him to get on the team sheet. Unlike some of his teammates, the 26-year-old has a set target for what he wants to achieve - at least ten goals in the league.

“I always want to get into double figures,” he admits.

“I’ve seen Benik [Afobe] and Bradders [Tom Bradshaw] do it in the past so, for me, to really make a claim for one of the two positions up front or the third position in behind, it’s to get those numbers.

“It doesn’t matter how well you play, the game comes down to scoring goals, especially when you’re an attacker and you need goals and assists. I need to definitely up that part of my game.

My effort will always be there, it’s more the numbers that I need to make count.”

Mason Bennett discusses injuries, personal targets and Millwall’s ‘death week’

Mason Bennett started up front in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United.

Millwall lost star forward Jed Wallace on a free transfer to Championship rivals West Brom. Bennett has been impressed by how the club has looked to replace him, claiming that he can “see the intent from the club”.

“We’ve got Flemmo [Zian Flemming] from Holland who’s obviously got that quality, you could see that in the first couple of days of training. You’ve got players like George Honeyman who’ve played many years in the Football League, he’s got that tenacity and grit which are characteristics that are really associated with the club.

“We’ve had a good window, but if you ask any manager or player, you still want to add more signings and keep pushing. It’s not just for the quality in the team, but to push the other players

in those positions. We want it to be competitive and for everyone to be on their toes. It can only be a good thing if we can get a few more through the door.”

One thing that will help Bennett to get more game time is his versatility.

He can play across the forward line, either through the middle or out wide, and has also dropped deeper to play as a no.10 in Millwall’s 5-2-1-2 formation.

While he prefers to play as a striker, he claims that he’s happy to play in any position, having played in a totally different role at the start of his youth career.

“I started my career, funnily enough, at centre-back,” he chuckled.

“Then I’ve gone to striker, I’ve played

there a lot. As a forward, especially a striker, you get pushed out wide. I had that problem a few years ago, but the gaffer has really shown faith in playing me in a more central role.

“I don’t mind, I’ll play anywhere for this team because I really enjoy playing out the club. It doesn’t matter what system or what role I play, it’s up to me to make that count.

“I can always drift in different positions in the game, I have that licence and that freedom under the gaffer. It’s not a big deal but it’s nicer to play down the middle.”

The aforementioned competition and squad depth is crucial, especially in the Championship where Millwall will need to play 46 games in the space of nine months. The fixture list

The early form has matched Millwall’s results from the 2022-23 campaign, where they boasted one of the best home records in the division while facing significant struggles on the road.

Following the defeat in South Yorkshire, Rowett told the News that, while he’s been pleased with how his side has performed so far, the performances are more important and indicate that Millwall will need to improve away from home in the coming weeks.

“It’s always about both the performances and the results,” he explained.

“The results are the most important thing, you can play well and lose but of course I’d rather play badly and win!

“Over the course of the season, your performance levels usually even out in the end. If you play well the majority of the time, you’ll win more games than you lose.

“It’s the aspects that we work on in pre-season. It’s the little things that we’re trying to do to be better. I felt that, in the first game, we did a lot of those

things and looked very encouraging.

“Then in the second game for probably 25 or 30 minutes we came away from one or two of those areas. That’s what we spoke about, consistency between our home performances and our away performances has to be closer.

Despite suffering consecutive defeats, Rowett admitted that the mood in the dressing room was that of disappointment, but that his side was ready to bounce back ahead of a crucial game at home to Coventry City on Saturday afternoon.

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT was hopeful of another new signing ahead of this weekend’s match against Coventry City - as the Lions were linked with a move for Blackpool’s Shayne Lavery.

Lavery, 23, is yet to start for the Tangerines in either of their two Championship games this season, playing just 27 minutes off the bench.

However, he started against League Two outfit Barrow in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, playing the entire 90 minutes as the two sides drew 0-0. In the penalty shoot-out, Lavery initially missed from the spot before the referee allowed him to retake it and score,

although his side ended up crashing out of the competition after losing 4-3.

The striker was a regular under former boss Neil Critchley last season, scoring eight goals in 37 league games as Blackpool comfortably secured survival in their first season back in the second tier.

However, he now looks set to leave Bloomfield Road after falling out of the starting lineup under new manager Michael Appleton, who has adopted a totally different style of play to his predecessor.

Lavery moved to Everton after starting his youth career in the lower leagues of Northern Ireland. He failed to make a senior appearance for the Toffees, despite being named as an unused substitute for their Europa League match against Apollon Limassol, and he was released in 2019 after a brief loan spell at Falkirk in 2019.

He joined Irish Premiership champions Linfield that summer, going on to score 33 goals in just 56 league matches across two years before returning to England with Blackpool.

He’s also a senior Northern Ireland international, having played 15 games for his country since 2018.

Rowett has remained optimistic that the Lions can sign more players before the end of the transfer window, telling the News that he wanted to bring in a fresh face before hosting the Sky Blues at The Den on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions were stung by the departure of star forward Jed Wallace, who left for Championship rivals West Brom on a free transfer despite being offered a new deal by the club.

As a result, Gary Rowett has moved to offer a number of contracts ahead of the new Championship season, with Shaun Hutchinson, Murray Wallace and Billy Mitchell all penning new deals before the opening-day win against Stoke City.

21-year-old forward Tyler Burey also signed a new long-term contract on Monday afternoon, although Rowett admitted that he was yet to make a decision on whether or not he will leave the club on loan before the end of the summer transfer window.

The Millwall boss told the News that he was keen to sort out his players’ contract situation ahead of the new season, allowing them to play without any distractions while ensuring that their immediate futures lie at The Den. “Any club wants to tie down their young players,” he admitted.

“Any manager wants to keep their players that have performed to a good level within the team for longer and extend those years.

“It means you’ve got a chance to work with them and don’t get that constant change within your squad all the time.

“That’s something that we’ve tried to work hard to do this year and beyond.”

Millwall are hoping to resolve Danny McNamara’s future as soon as possible amidst interest from QPR, with Rowett claiming that the most recent round of contract negotiations look much more promising than in recent weeks.
