Southwark Council launched the Green Buildings Fund in October last year, with the idea to get developers whose schemes were not zero-emissions to pay for projects elsewhere that would help the council get to carbon neutral. This is a specific application of the longstanding section 106 planning obligation under which developers whose schemes would

otherwise be unacceptable mitigate that by paying for something else that benefits the local community.

With Southwark having declared a climate emergency and claiming to be doing everything it can to get to carbon neutrality by 2030, housing is an important focus - and the council has said that 79 per cent of emissions in the borough come from buildings.

As of June 2022, Southwark has collected £5.5 million for the fund, from developers whose schemes, stretching back years, did not meet the current carbon neutrality rules. The council said that it could in theory collect £11.3 million, but that this was unlikely.

Southwark’s planning officers have now recommended that about £488,000 of that

money be released to hire three “climate change officers” on two-year fixed-term contracts, which would work out at roughly £81,000 per year for each of them.

That money will come from nine schemes, the oldest of which was approved in May 2014. and the most recent of which got the green light in 2018. Interestingly, the four most recent of the nine - contributing more than £311,000 between them - are the council’s own schemes, at 25 Commercial Way and 95A Meeting House Lane in Peckham, 282-286 Old Kent Road and 2-68 and 70-136 Chilton Grove in Surrey Quays.

A Southwark spokesperson said that because these developments are blocks of flats, they do not have the same individual roof space to create energy onsite as a detached home would,

refugees rehoused in the borough, helping coordinate community response to the pandemic, and ending the outsourcing of the borough’s leisure services. But she did come in for some criticism having presided over the Bermondsey Carnival losing most of its funding, which has meant it is not running this year.

Norwich North has been held by Conservative MP Chloe Smith since a 2009 by-election. Smith increased her share of the vote to more than 50 per cent in 2019, while Labour’s share fell to about 40 per cent – so Cllr Macdonald would have a fight on her hands to retake the seat.

There have been rumours of a snap general election after Boris Johnson said he would stand down in May, although bookmakers still have the odds showing that 2024 is the most likely. It will take place on January 24, 2025 at the latest.

Cllr Macdonald said she was proud of her work with Southwark’s equalities, neighbourhoods and leisure portfolio.

She added: “I grew up in Norfolk and am delighted to be selected as the Labour prospective parliamentary candidate for Norwich North by Labour party members. We

need a Labour government more than ever. I will be working hard to make that happen.”

She came in for criticism from Norfolk Labour activists for supposedly not knowing enough about the local area, although she grew up in the county and is the daughter of a former council leader in the area.

Norfolk County councillor Emma Corlett said that Cllr Macdonald’s knowledge of Norwich would fit “on a postage stamp”. It came as Karen Smith, who unsuccessfully fought the last election for Labour, also wanted to stand in this election, according to the Eastern Daily Press, the local newspaper for the area.

Responding to the criticism, Cllr Macdonald told the News: “Labour Party members in Norwich North chose who they thought was the best candidate to win back this seat for Labour and end the chaos of this collapsing Tory Government. Locals watched England triumph 2-1 over Germany in the Kirby Estate on Southwark Park Road.

The game took place under the watchful eye of England star and the estate’s namesake, Fran Kirby, whose mural was put up a few weeks ago at the start of the tournament.

The Kirby is famous across London for its patriotic displays, with residents putting up hundreds of flags every tournament in support of the England team.

Retired academic finally opens American Garden in Peckham

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk The American Garden in Peckham Rye Park has officially opened, marking the end of a sixyear project by an 80-year-old Californian.

Retired academic Nancy ColemanFrank (pictured) came to Peckham in 2016 to research Peter Collinson, an 18th century botanist who established a garden in the park.

Dismayed to find it had almost entirely disappeared, she set about restoring the garden to its former glory.

Nancy said: “I was astonished to find Collinson had been forgotten by Peckham. He lived here for over 50 years. His world famous garden, visited

by all the important botanists of the time, had plants found nowhere else in the country.

“His seed and plant exchange with John Bartram of Philadelphia had an enormous influence on English gardens.”

Guests at the grand opening were treated to a speech about the history of Peckham Rye Park and each given a packets containing Dame’s Rocket and Obedient plant seeds By handing out these seeds for plants that are native to America, Nancy hopes to continue the transatlantic botanical exchange pioneered by Collinson.

To rebuild the garden, Nancy has secured grant funding from Southwark Council, the US Embassy,

the Local Postcode Trust, Viridor Credits, among other sources.

The money has been used for landscaping, acidifying the soil, laying trees, plants and shrubs and installing modern benches.

Kathryn Crockart, Minister Counsellor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in London, said: “We are proud to be a part of this preservation work and look forward to see the Garden and our nations Special Relationship continue to bloom.”

As well as a place to relax, the garden will be used as an educational space, with readings, lectures and workshops held in its confines.

The American Garden in Peckham, east of the Sexby Garden in Peckham Rye Park is open to all.

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Lewis Hamilton invited Kennington’s eleven-year-old champion go-karter to a VIP experience at the Silverstone race track.

Myles Assefa-Harrison, known for his driver’s “instinct”, has picked up over 60 trophies since he first set wheels on the tarmac aged six.

He headed to Silverstone on Friday, July 1, where he watched his hero at the British Grand Prix Practice Day, and met the lead Mercedes engineer Stephanie Travers.

Myles discovered his talent when his Dad, Andrew Harrison, took him for a day-out at Rye House Kart Raceway, Hertfordshire.

“When he first got into a go-kart he blew me away with how how he manoeuvred and controlled the vehicle”, said Andrew.

“If he got out of shape, he knew to start throttling the accelerator. I wondered ‘where did he learn these things?’ It’s almost like instinct.”

In 2018, Myles became a recordbreaker, smashing the best time for the Bambino category on the Buckmoor Park Circuit, Chatham.

Myles said: “I love racing and love being in the kart - sometimes you pull off races that are miracles and it just feels so good.”

Lewis Hamilton’s team got up to speed with Myles’ successes and invited him to the Silverstone along with two other young racers.

Myles said: “When they told me I was shocked - very shocked. And then after a few seconds or so I was so happy.

“Lewis Hamilton is my favourite driver because he has set many records. Not because he’s always winning, because he’s set the standards in racing.”

The scheme is part of Lewis Hamilton’s drive to make motor-racing more diverse - a sport sometimes criticised for being dominated by those who are rich and white.

In an interview with a Spanish sports outlet, Lewis Hamilton once described Formula 1 as a “billionaire boys club”.

Myles’ dad Andrew, a civil engineer, works overtime to fund his son’s passion, which he says “wouldn’t be possible” without working extra hours.

“It’s also quite a daunting challenge for me in that it’s clear to see Myles has got natural talent and I want to bring out the best in my son”, he said.

Asked about a perceived lack of diversity in the sport, Andrew said: “When we started this journey we noticed we were the only black participants but I have noticed there is a greater spectrum of other kids.

“You see much more girls and more different groups of people. I think it’s the effect of Lewis Hamilton being so visible.”

A 25-year-old voluntary staff member of the club was reportedly riding nineteenyear-old Tomas at at 6pm on Sunday, July 31, when an Alsatian bounded towards them.

Jaye Montebello, 54, proprietor of Dulwich Riding School, said: “The Alsatian chased him and took the horse down. Dogs unnerve horses and he lost his balance.”

More than 1,600 Southwark children who are eligible for free school meals are not taking up the offer, new figures show.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey man has pleaded not guilty to having sex with a teenage girl under the legal age of consent.

Thomas Castles, 32, was charged with five counts of engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a child under the age of sixteen, between 2018 and 2019.

Appearing in the dock at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday morning (June 29), in a blue jumper and white shirt, Castles pleaded not guilty to all counts.

Castles, who is from the Neckinger Estate, remains in custody. The judge decided to set a decision on possible bail for two weeks’ time, on August 12.

Castles’ trial date has been set for October 10.

Some 15,079 children at schools in the borough are eligible for free school meals because their families receive various kinds of benefits - but only 13,683 are known to be actually eating them - about 91 per cent.

That is a higher rate than many other London boroughs, and the capital as a

Jaye said the riding school has suspended park practices, especially given that horses have been getting

chased by dogs “three times a week” recently.

Six or seven weeks ago, a dog chased one of their horses, resulting in a rider falling off and breaking her coccyx.

Nine years ago, a horse had its “throat ripped out” by a dog and required stitches, according to Jaye.

Jaye said: “People need to keep their dogs on the lead. I’ve got a German Shepherd myself. I wouldn’t take my dog off the lead in the park because I don’t know how she would react to everything.

She is speaking to park wardens about how to best tackle the problem, and is suggesting introducing an hour where dog walkers are told to keep their dogs on leads while the horses are out.

In London overall, there are 322,393 children eligible for free school meals, and just 256,421 eating them - just under eighty per cent. The figures were published by Sadiq Khan’s office in response to a question by Emma Best, a Conservative member of the London Assembly. The number of eligible taking up free school meals was calculated on census day in March 2021, so is a snapshot figure.

The low rate of take-up for free school meals may be because of the stigma - some families or children may feel embarrassed or ashamed of needing to ask for help, according to the Children’s Society charity. And some families may not even know they are eligible, research by the Child Poverty Action Group found.

All children at state schools get free meals in Reception and years 1 and 2.

Southwark Council also funds every nursery and key stage 2 child to have a free ‘healthy school meal’, with low fat and sugar content and plenty of fruit and vegetables.

Rough sleeping is rising in Southwark

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk The number of people sleeping in Southwark is increasing, according to a recent report by the Combined Homelessness and Information Network (CHAIN).

The report shows worrying spikes in homelessness across London, with the number of people recorded as sleeping rough up by 23 per cent across the capital compared to last year.

Between April and June 2022, 129 people were recorded as having slept rough in Southwark. 59 of those were were new rough sleepers, 54 were intermittent rough sleepers and sixteen were permanently living on the streets.

The number of rough sleepers recorded in Southwark was up by eighteen compared to January to March, and by thirteen compared to the same time last year.

A map included in the report shows which parts of Southwark saw the most contacts with homeless people recorded. It shows that homeless people are most likely to be found around Borough and Bankside, London Bridge and West Bermondsey and St George’s.

Although concerning, these figures are less than in other boroughs. Westminster recorded 699 rough sleepers, Camden 247, and Lambeth 188.

Westminster saw an increase of 162 people compared to last year, while Camden and Lambeth saw increases of 32 and ten respectively.

Of the homeless people recorded in Southwark, 61.1 per cent were from the UK, 4.4 percent from Romania, 4.4 per cent from Poland and eight per cent from African countries.

Eleven per cent had experience of the armed forces, twelve per cent had been in care and 40 per cent had experience of prison.

Nationally, the number of people living homeless is 38 per cent higher compared to 2010.

According to charity Homeless Link, local

authority expenditure on homelessness-related services has reduced significantly as compared to expenditure ten years ago.

In 2008 to 2009, £2.9 billion was spent on homelessness-related activity, while from 2018 to 2019, £0.7 billion less was spent.

This has coincided with a corresponding cut in central government grants for local authorities, slashed by 37 per cent in real terms between 2009 and 2020, according to the Institute for Government.

The report was devised by CHAIN, which is funded by the Mayor of London, and formerly managed by St Mungo’s.

According to the Big Issue, the data offered by CHAIN is some of the most accurate available.

Responding to the statistics, Balbir Kaur Chatrik, Director of Policy at Centrepoint, a charity for the young and homeless said: “While there’s a worrying trend developing on overall rough sleeping numbers in London, it’s good to see that the number of young people sleeping rough has continued to fall from the height of the pandemic.

That said the 210 young people counted is still far too high and each number represents a young life literally put at risk for want of a safe place to stay.

“Worse still, those few hundred seen sleeping rough in recent months are just the tip of the iceberg. Every day we receive calls to our Helpline from young people trapped in unstable or dangerous situations or reliant on family and friends to avoid spending a night on the streets.

“The Mayor is already making the right kind of investment in age-appropriate accommodation and support towards helping end youth homelessness - but local authorities and charities cannot end this crisis alone, particularly as the cost-of-living crisis looks set to deepen. As we look ahead to a winter of rising prices and higher bills, it’s vital the government takes steps as soon as possible to not only help people avoid becoming homeless but to also ensure those who do, have a safe place to stay.”

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Hundreds of new flats will be built in Rotherhithe after the next two stages of the Canada Water Masterplan got approval last week.

The two stages - called Zone L and Zone F - are to the east of the dock, covering part of the shopping centre and the northeastern Printworks site respectively.

Zone L will have 237 homes in three buildings. Some 137 of the flats will be for social rent and 37 will be intermediate - 80 per cent of market rates. The remaining 63 will be for private sale. Zone L will also have offices, shops and spaces for community use, and open courtyards for everyone to use.

Zone F will have 410 homes in two buildings, all of which will be for private sale. This part will also have offices and shops, as well as public roof terraces.

The three buildings in Zone L are nine storeys, nine storeys and eight storeys respectively. The two buildings in Zone F

are 37 storeys and 34 storeys.

The entire Canada Water masterplan, which is already being built in part

by British Land, got outline planning permission - meaning the development is given the green light in principle - in May 2020. Each stage is now being put to the planning committee for full permission.

Speaking at Southwark Council’s planning committee meeting on Tuesday July 26, Rotherhithe councillor Kath Whittam pointed out that Zone L’s urban greening factor - which shows how much planting and green space a development includes - was lower than the London development guidelines.

Officers replied that the outline planning permission for the development was agreed before urban greening was introduced into the London Plan, but that British Land would meet the guidelines across the entire masterplan, if public space was also included.

The social rent and intermediate homes in Zone L will be separate from the private homes. The social rent homes will be split

across the nine-storey L1 block, with the nine-storey L2 block containing social and intermediate flats. All of the private flats will be in the eight-storey L3 building.

Committee chair Cllr Richard Livingstone asked if the social rent and private blocks would be maintained to different standards, but officers said the difference between the buildings would be “imperceptible”.

Meanwhile, the current Odeon cinema in the Surrey Quays shopping centre is in Zone F, and will be knocked down. British Land have agreed to find a new cinema provider to replace the Odeon somewhere in the masterplan area, but there may be a gap where there is no theatre.

Councillors at the committee asked how long British Land have to look for a cinema provider before we say ‘we’ll let you off’.

Officers said the plan was to check nine months after outline planning permission, then a further eighteen months after that.

British Land told them after nine months that they couldn’t secure an operator, but said they “remain committed” to finding someone to open a cinema.

Another concern with Zone F was the windiness that the high buildings would cause. Cllr Whittam told planning officers: “You say that nothing has changed since the outline planning was passed, but we didn’t know the shape of the building,

adding that she was worried about the microclimate that would “swirl around”.

The officers’ report warns that “there would be locations with occurrences of strong winds with the potential to be a safety concern to more vulnerable pedestrians and cyclists”.

Cllr Whittam added: “That cannot have been known fully at the outline planning so it should be a material consideration for us to determine tonight, and I would argue that planting a few trees and putting a few pots in does not mitigate against vulnerable pedestrians and cyclists being blown away.”

Officers said that “wind mitigation” measures like trees would make conditions more comfortable, and added that British Land would have to submit a detailed wind strategy.

The proposals are car-free, and officers said that meant that the developments would not increase parking demand in the area. But Southwark Council has already introduced a controlled parking zone on the Rotherhithe, meaning you have to pay to park. One objector to Zone F said that the paid-for parking permits were brought in “not because we local residents need them but because the Council want to accommodate significant development with inadequate parking provision.”

Officers said that “the development

seeks to maximise sustainable modes of transport and has made provision for walking and cycling in the design. Further, substantial contributions would be paid towards increasing public transport infrastructure.”

Zone L got unanimous approval from the six members of the planning committee. Zone F was approved by four, with Cllr Whittam and her fellow Rotherhithe Labour councillor Bethan Roberts abstaining.

A spokesperson for British Land said: “Zone L and Zone F offer really exciting opportunities to provide much needed new homes and office space for local people. We are really pleased to have received planning permission for both schemes, that will see 174 much needed affordable homes delivered.”

“The vision for Canada Water is to deliver a new town centre, connected with the local community; a place where everyone living, working, and studying in the local area truly belongs and can access the opportunities that it will bring, sharing in its success.

“The delivery of a significant amount of new affordable homes, the majority at social rent, alongside new public spaces, marks a significant step in delivering this, and we’re grateful to everyone locally who viewed and commented on the plans prior to their approval.”

Canada Water developers British Land have launched an investigation after a man had a piece of metal lodge in his eye while in his garden, which backs onto a major building site.

Eddie says he was sitting in his garden in Hothfield Place in Rotherhithe on Wednesday, July 6, when he felt a sharp pain in his eye. It got steadily worse and worse over the evening until he took himself to Moorfields Eye Hospital, near Old Street.

Doctors at the hospital found that he had a small piece of metal in his eye, which had swelled up and become very bloodshot. A letter from the hospital

says that staff removed a “metal FB”, or foreign body, and that a “rust ring” remained.

Eddie, which is not his real name, was asked to come back a few days later, and doctors successfully took out the rest of the metal. But weeks later his eye and the surrounding area were still quite red and felt sensitive, although it has slowly improved.

Building work on the A2 site, also known as the Dock Shed, has been going since last autumn and should be finished by the end of 2024. The new building will include a new Southwark Council leisure centre, as well as

restaurants, shops and offices.

But Hothfield Place residents have complained of noise, dust, a lack of privacy from builders and even their gardens being sprayed with cement on one occasion when a machine malfunctioned last year.

work, but he said he doesn’t “see any other explanation”.

“They are working right behind me... they coming with that crane. They are carrying all the materials. They probably came there. When you are lifting something up very high, onto the air, obviously it blows into the air. I don’t see what else it could be.”

A spokesperson for British Land, said: “We are aware of an incident that has been reported to Southwark News.

We take the safety of our neighbours incredibly seriously and are working closely with Mace, the contractor onsite, to understand what has taken place.”

A spokesperson from Mace said: “The health, safety and wellbeing of the residents living around our projects and our colleagues on sites is our top priority. We are aware of an incident being reported to Southwark News and we’re working closely with British Land and our supply chain partners to understand more about the circumstances of the incident.”

The government’s health and safety executive (HSE) said it was also aware of the incident and considering an investigation.

An HSE spokesperson said: “We have asked for further information, which will help us determine whether this incident meets HSE’s incident selection criteria.”

64-year-old Amele Getaneh’s dismal story stretches back over ten years Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A 64-year-old woman who was originally ‘evicted’ from the demolished Heygate Estate ended up having to sleep rough in the Old Kent Road McDonald’s.

Amele Getaneh’s story stretches back over ten years to when the sprawling estate in Elephant & Castle was bulldozed to make way for one of the borough’s largest regeneration projects.

Nowadays, she lives in a ‘damp, mouldy, mice-infested flat’ which surveyors say is “unfit for human habitation”.

After the 2010 Heygate demolition, Amele was decanted to an apartment on Beckway Street, Walworth, where she lives now.

She claims she tried to reject the property because of its poor condition, but Southwark obtained a warrant for her forcible eviction.

Amele suffers from asthma and arthritis but says she was still made to move into a property she knew was unsafe.

“I am distressed and depressed. I clean the mould with bleach every week but every time it rises up again”, she said.

She lived at the mould-ridden property, with damp so severe she says it caused the electrics to malfunction, until a horrified solicitor took her case on in 2019.

That same year, Southwark moved her to a Catford flat while they repaired the Walworth address, but she was evicted due to a council error, she says.

For several days McDonald’s staff kindly allowed her to stay in the restaurant every night until closing at 5am, she told the News.

but my feet and and hands were freezing cold. My body was shaking”, she said. But with her medicine for various conditions locked in the flat she was evicted from, she was hospitalised on December 15, 2019.

She says once out of hospital the council put her into a noisy Streatham hostel, full of “drunk people”, with no central heating, until June 2020.

She moved back into her Walworth flat once maintenance was complete in June

2020. She says the repairs were shoddy and the mould soon returned.

A recent surveyor’s report concluded that the house is “unfit for human habitation” under the Homes Act 2018.

Bathroom waste pipes are cracked and the property is “extremely humid”, according to the report.

The report also says the “extensive mould growth” is “prejudicial to health”. A letter from Amele’s GP also said the mould

could be contributing to her asthma.

Amele has now reopened a legal case with Southwark, with the help of her solicitor, to try get repairs done on her property.

Councillor Darren Merrill, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “I am very saddened that Ms Getanah has suffered so much over the years, nobody should have to live in a home which is not warm, dry or safe.

Her housing case has been referred for legal consideration.

“As such, we cannot comment in detail about her situation or what led to it.

However, I can say that we will be listening very closely to whatever comes out of that process in order to see what went wrong and make sure we fully support her in every way that we can going forward.”

Ukrainian refugee gets free bike and more after Bermondsey and Rotherhithe community rallies round Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Ukrainian refugee living in Bermondsey has been given a free bike, money for servicing it and for a helmet by people living in the local area - and the local mechanics gave her the service for free.

A local man also gave her money for a helmet and to get the bike serviced but the mechanic did the job for free

Tatiana Lavskaya, a film director, actress and musician from Mykolaiv near Odesa, came to the UK just six weeks ago through the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

Meanwhile Rotherhithe man Alan Price was getting a new bike, and he and his wife Ellen were looking to find a new owner for the old model.

Ellen and Alan were matched with Tatiana by fellow Rotherhithe resident and musician Eleanor Thorn, who met Tatiana at a recent Camberwell event for refugees.

They gave Alan’s bike to Tatiana, and although it is a man’s model, it was a good fit, Ellen said.

But the bike did need some fixing up, and Tatiana needed a helmet. Luckily, Eleanor was able to find another generous local donor, Michal Filip Kowalik, who gave Tatiana £100 for the service and the helmet.

And the local generosity did not end there. Tatiana took the bike to Machine Bikes on Tower Bridge Road - where mechanic Russell Jones fixed it up for free.

Tatiana said: “I’m very happy that people help me, you know. It’s amazing, a little miracle because a few days ago I’m just thinking about [having a bike].

about a trip to Paris or Manchester, because I have there my friend from Ukraine. It’s important to be not alone. To have these people help me makes me feel like I am not alone.”

Tatiana added that riding a bike in London looks easier than in her home city, where there are no bike lanes. Just a few months ago, when the war started, she could not even get out of bed because of a problem with her sciatic nerve. Luckily, now she has been able to leave the war behind her - and she said she is looking to exploring her new city.

Ellen said she and Alan were very happy to support Tatiana. “I’ve had the Ukrainian flag flying outside my abode for a long time, I genuinely feel for these people.

They could be anybody, it was a kind of tiny-weeny thing to make someone’s life a bit easier.” She praised Eleanor for bringing everyone together.

Michal called his donation “a tiny gesture but if that makes her forget about Russian atrocities - money well spent.”

Rotherhithe Afghan refugee to be reunited with his wife Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk An Afghan refugee living in Rotherhithe is set to be reunited with his wife after a year apart, because he has been given asylum seeker status.

That means Abid Raza Khan, 22, can apply for his wife to move to the UK from Dubai, where she currently lives.

Mr Raza Khan said he was very grateful to Sir Simon Hughes, the former local MP who has helped him since he came to the UK, and to London South Bank University, where he studies and Sir Simon is chancellor.

He added that he wanted to thank the Home Office for its decision.

As we reported earlier this month, Mr Raza Khan has been studying at LSBU since 2020, but moved back to Afghan capital Kabul in May last year to marry his wife. Three months later the Taliban took over, and Mr Raza Khan managed to get his wife to Dubai.

His own efforts to fly back directly to the UK were thwarted and he ended up enduring torture from the Taliban, alongside his grandfather. He managed to escape to Uzbekistan and came back to London via Moscow. Mr Raza Khan lost contact with his parents and still does not know where they are.

Sir Simon welcomed the “truly great

news” that the asylum application of Mr Raza Khan - “the most decent of men” had been accepted.

He added: “I was immediately alerted to Abid’s situation by a university colleague and thanks to What’s App was able to make contact with Abid and on behalf of our university support Abid in Kabul, as he made his way overland to leave the country, in Uzbekistan and back in London ever since.

“With the great help of London law firm Bindmans and several key officials at the Home Office Abid’s asylum application was considered urgently on compassionate grounds and granted last week. We are all very grateful to them.

Many people in the university, especially the students union, and members of local mosques and churches and at Bacon’s College where Abid has spoken have been regularly praying for and supporting Abid. The decision means that Abid’s young wife will also be able to join him here in London later this year.

“After the most traumatic of years, the UK has been able to offer Abid a safe future here. He is the most decent of men and a student who our university is very proud of. Abid is committed to make a great contribution to the UK in the future. We will continue to support him of course, and especially as he continues to try to track down his parents and brothers with whom he lost all contact since the Taliban take-over in Afghanistan last year. “

what the fork is the difference? drivers left confused by signs Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Dulwich Village drivers have been left bamboozled by two nearidentical signs that have totally different meanings.

The sign on the left, on Dulwich Village, means vehicles are not allowed to turn left onto Calton Avenue and will receive a penalty charge notice if they do so.

But the sign on the right, on Lordship Lane, outside Dulwich Library, means vehicles are permitted to turn left onto Eynella Road.

Local campaign group One Dulwich wrote to Southwark Highways saying the signs were “creating an accident hazard”.

“As drivers see the signs, they become confused and stop at the junction while they try and work out what they mean.

Most then drive on, believing they can’t turn in to Eynella Road”, they explained.

Southwark Highways said it had simplified the Lordship Lane sign because there are so many roads between Dulwich Library and the Dulwich Village junction.

However, the result is that some drivers are led to believe that the closure applies to Eynella Junction.

Local resident Pippa said she couldn’t believe “how daft the flipping signs are” and she “didn’t really understand what it meant” when the signs were erected.

When she asked Southwark Highways to explain its meaning, she says they simply directed her to the highway code.

Richard Aldwinckle, a spokesperson for One Dulwich, said: “Not only are they inaccurate and dangerous, but residents living on streets in this part of

Dulwich are now finding that visitors, carers, taxi drivers, tradespeople and others no longer access the area through the Eynella Road junction, in the mistaken belief that they will be fined if they do.

“This particularly impacts the elderly and those with mobility problems,

who depend on people who offer vital services being able to reach them quickly and easily.”

Cllr Catherine Rose, Cabinet Member for Parks, Streets and Clean Air, said: “Although cars and motorbikes can turn left after the Lordship Lane sign, there is nowhere for them to continue

their journey, much beyond this point.

This is because there are restrictions in place beyond the turn, in both directions. These create dead ends for cars and motorbikes.

“However, we are reviewing concerns raised about the sign and investigating other options.”

Melting IT system was ‘reaching end of its life’ last year, says hospital report Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Collapsing Guys’ and St Thomas’ IT infrastructure was “reaching the end of its life” last year, a report has revealed.

Since Tuesday, July 19, the NHS trust has suffered IT outages, which it initially blamed on the extreme heatwave.

But over a week later, the hospital is still experiencing “significant IT problems… which is having an ongoing impact on our services”.

In light of this disruption, an agenda pack from a board of directors meeting held on 17 November 2021 raises eyebrows.

Minutes from the meeting says that “the Trust has a number of IT systems that are out of support, for example the Windows 10 operating system, and IT infrastructure that had reached the end of its life.”

The recorded minutes go on to say: “Work had taken place over the last

six months to partially mitigate the associated security risks through applying tactical fixes to the most serious areas of risk.”

It also says a committee found that systems were “vulnerable to a cyber-attack” and that it had seen a recent increase in “targeted phishing attacks”.

An NHS doctor at the hospital reportedly told the BBC that “poor planning” and “chronic underfunding” have exasperated the problems.

It has also been reported that doctors have struggled to access patients’ digitally stored medical history so have been using paper to log information.

Responding to the News’ questions about historic IT problems, a spokesperson for Guy’s and St Thomas’ said: “While our immediate priority is to get our IT systems back up and running as safely and quickly as possible, we will be commissioning an external, independent review to look in detail at what happened and to ensure we identify and learn all the lessons.”

Lord’s Court residents reveal the horror of Sheila Seleoane’s death

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Residents of a Nunhead housing block where a dead woman was left in her flat for over two years have spoken of their “shock” and “trauma”.

Sheila Seleoane, 58, was discovered by police in February 2022, years after neighbours first warned housing association Peabody about her welfare.

At the inquest into her death in July 2022, the coroner said the tragedy “was difficult to fathom” and Peabody apologised for “not joining the dots”.

Neighbours first told Peabody about a “foul” smell engulfing their block in September 2019 but the trust failed to take action.

Corrina Whyte, 33, a mother-of-seven who has lived at Lord’s Court since 2006 said: “I’ve been traumatised. In the whole block you had maggots and bluebottles.

They were coming from everywhere. It was horrendous.”

Over the following years, worried residents repeatedly raised concerns with the housing association about the welfare of Sheila.

They reported that letters were wedged in Sheila’s letterbox, that she had gone missing, and pleaded with police to check on the medical assistant.

2020, a police blunder meant they told Peabody that Sheila was alive and well.

An operator, who has since left the force, misinterpreted a previous entry and conveyed the incorrect information to the housing association.

Police only stumbled across her body when, during Storm Eunice, they responded to complaints that Sheila’s door was banging in the wind.

In the months following her death, Corrina said that so many maggots dropped onto the balcony below Sheila’s flat that her neighbour had to buy a shovel to scoop them off.

Even though she lives on the ground floor while Sheila was at the top, she could still smell the “sewage smell” from her flat.

“I’ve been very depressed and to be honest this hasn’t helped. We’ve been living amongst death”, she said.

‘knock down ginger’ on Sheila’s door, soon after she’d died, and saying he’d heard the buzz of flies behind the door.

Corrina met Sheila on several occasions: “She was very quiet, very polite. She loved to stare at my children which suggests she might have been lonely.”

“I hate this house now. Going inside there’s just a chill because you know what you’ve been living near”, she said.

She said she blames Peabody and that neighbours did everything they could to warn the trust that Sheila might not be okay.

Fighting tears, she said she feels guilty for not climbing into the flat to get Sheila’s body out, even though she had no idea she’d died at the time. “We are all suffering for Sheila,” she said.

Corrina’s partner Danny Fitzgerald, also a resident at Lord’s Court, said after finding out what had happened “my brain for a

month was gone - I was thinking all mad things”.

Another neighbour who has lived at Lord’s Court since 2006 only gave his name as ‘Senior’. He said: “I didn’t spend a lot of time with her but she was really nice and when I heard I was shocked.

“We were having conversations about the maggots for a couple of years. They [Peabody] did nothing. It definitely could have been avoided.

“The bottom line is there are policies and procedures in place but housing associations don’t look after their tenants.”

Colin Dyke, 66, a St Mary’s Road resident living opposite Lord’s Court, says these incidents “happen everywhere”.

Around 2008, he spent three or four years refitting Lambeth Councilowned properties after their tenants had died.

He remembers one summer w h e n colleagues warned him the flat he was about to strip had housed a dead man for eight months.

Could the bakerloo line extension be revived?

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The government offered Transport for London (TfL) a bailout deal last week worth billions of pounds, sparking speculation that the Bakerloo Line Extension could be revived.

At the time of writing, TfL had not even decided whether they will accept the deal, although transport secretary Grant Shapps has said it is the final offer, after years of negotiations.

But the £3.6 billion on offer from the government - which Shapps said is “to ensure capital projects take place by 2024” - has led some to ask if the Bakerloo Line Extension down the Old Kent Road towards Lewisham could be brought back into contention, after TfL effectively shelved it indefinitely during the pandemic.

The extension is key to the development of the Old Kent Road area, where Southwark Council wants 20,000 new homes - including at least 5,000 social - to be built by 2038. The extension would include three new Tube stations, called Burgess Park where the big Tesco currently is - Old Kent Road - on the current Lidl site - and New Cross Gate - at the big Sainsbury’s.

The line would also connect with the Lewisham railway and Docklands Light Railway station. A second phase could see the extension join up with the existing National Rail lines through the south-eastern suburbs to Hayes.

Without the extension, the Old Kent Road area is mostly reliant on buses, which Southwark Council has itself said is only enough to support the first stage of the development plans - 9,500 homes.

So could this deal, assuming TfL accept it - which is not a given - revive the extension and breathe new life into the plans to transform the Old Kent Road?

For Nick Bowes, CEO of the Boroughbased Centre for London think tank, it is a possibility, although by no means assured.

“Of all of the projects that are floating around in London, the next projects in the pipeline, the Bakerloo Line Extension has one of the best chances,” he told the News. “Crossrail 2 [which would run from north-east to southwest London] is too expensive, £30 billion upwards]. There are quite a number of other smaller schemes...

“But the Bakerloo Line Extension sits nicely in the middle, it’s ready to go, it’s been consulted on, the route’s been safeguarded [meaning the land required for the line cannot be built on].”

There are several major stumbling blocks. Firstly, TfL’s deal would give them £3.6 billion for capital investment, and the total cost of the Bakerloo Line Extension - including the second phase out to Hayes - has been estimated at £7.9 billion, more than twice what the transport agency would get.

TfL would not be funding the entire project. Some money would come from local authorities like Southwark, and developers would pay through a community infrastructure levy (CIL).

Southwark Council has estimated it could get £350 million in CIL money from developers.

The £1.1 billion Northern Line Extension, which opened last year with two new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station, was funded by a government loan to the Greater London Authority, which was then repaid with money from developers meaning these businesses essentially paid for the project.

Could the same mechanism work for the Bakerloo Line Extension? Mr Bowes said he was doubtful, because the developers that funded the new part of the Northern Line were building more offices than are planned for the Old Kent Road area, which is largely residential.

Land values are also likely to be lower than in Battersea, despite the boost the new extension would bring.

Nevertheless, Mr Bowes said that

this would be an opportunity “to make developers pay” for the public infrastructure that benefits their bottom lines.

“One of the things we learned from the Jubilee Line Extension [through southeast and east London in the late 1990s] was the vast uplift of land value, which was never fully captured.”

Aside from cost, another major problem is the timeline. Shapps said the money would be for projects that would “take place by 2024”. Even if things had gone to plan, the Bakerloo Line Extension was originally intended to open in 2029, five years after that.

A third consideration is the ancient trains that run on the line - the oldest non-heritage rolling stock in the UK, dating back to 1972.

If the extension were to happen, TfL would want to improve the capacity of the line by bringing in new trains, itself

at a cost of around £1 billion, judging by how much it cost to upgrade the Piccadilly line trains.

And another person with close knowledge of the Bakerloo Line Extension, who declined to be named, said that they would be very surprised if any new deal revived the project in any significant way, because of the cost and the timelines, other than perhaps some more technical studies.

They said that other TfL projects like the further extension of the Elizabeth line and other smaller infrastructure schemes would be more likely to be given the go-ahead.

TfL themselves have kept their cards close to their chest about the future of the Bakerloo Line Extension since the government’s offer. Speaking to London outlet MyLondon, TfL commissioner Andy Byford said that there was a “compelling” business case for the

Bakerloo Line Extension, but would not be drawn out further.

Southwark Council have continued to maintain that they believe the extension will happen, even throughout the times in the past two years when TfL and Sadiq Khan have poured cold water on the project.

As late as November last year, amid pressure from the borough’s Liberal Democrats to divert money to a tram network instead, council leader Kieron Williams stood firm in his support for the extension.

He said: “The case for Government investment in London’s transport could not be clearer. We need to get our economy going, to clean up our toxic air, to deliver more homes Londoners can afford and to tackle the climate emergency.”

eople tell us they want to see their council stepping up, coming together and taking action to support them through the cost of living crisis.

Sadly Southwark Labour rejected bold Liberal Democrat proposals to declare a Cost Living Emergency and freeze Council Tax to support residents now.

At the recent Council Assembly we put forward loads of really positive suggestions to help people through this extremely difficult time. Labour said “no” and put their party politics first.

As Southwark’s motto says “We must be United to Serve” to help people right now. Southwark Liberal Democrats will always do this.

We called for the Council to declare a “cost-of-living emergency” so helping with rising costs is made

one of the Council’s top priorities.

We requested the council provide universal free school meals for secondary schools over the summer, we sought a commitment from Labour to freeze council tax for the next financial year, and demanded they stop using bailiffs to collect debt from residents.

Even Labour’s former cabinet member for schools, agreed at the assembly that the council should investigate extending secondary school meals provision. They still didn’t listen!

We think Labour aren’t going far enough, so our amendment built on Labour’s cost-of-living suggestions put took out cheap, outdated and tribal party politics. The reality is that pursuing this sort of politics is an injustice to the tens of thousands of our residents that are struggling right

now. Residents demand and deserve better from their representatives.

In essence, we presented a crossparty approach to the emergency.

So, why did Labour vote down our amendment?

Sadly too many councillrs think taking cheap swipes at the Liberal Democrats is more important than coming together for the cost-of-living emergency.

At the same assembly, Labour stuck to its allegiances again when it came to the London Mayor’s proposed bus cuts.

All of us agree that the cuts are largely due to a Conservative government playing political football with TfL’s funding packaging.

But, the Labour London Mayor is not blameless. Years of his mismanagement has led to a transport black hole in the South

welve years into Conservative-run Governments and the Tories are tearing themselves apart to replace the lying, lawbreaker Johnson.

That they propped him up so long despite his failings speaks volumes about their emptiness and cowardice.

It has been amazing to hear some honesty from Ministers, however. For example, Rishi Sunak was Chancellor and Chief Secretary to the Treasury for three years and now says he wants to end “the failed economic orthodoxy of the last ten years”.

The man whose job it was to get a grip on the nation’s finances but harmed our economy and stifled growth.

Sunak resigned from Johnson’s Government after they were both fined for breaking covid regulations.

He now says Johnson deserves ‘ten out of ten’ for leadership.

The lies don’t begin and end at Number 10 under this lot, who think they can continue taking the British people for fools.

I hope they are now a busted flush: especially Liz Truss. Her potted history is even pottier: she was a Lib Dem; then a Tory; a republican, now a monarchist; an ardent Remainer in the referendum but now a hardline Brextremist. Her ability to shapeshift and shed principles

makes her the prime candidate to lead the bag of snakes and charlatans that is the current Tory Party.

It is the Tories’ Summer of Discontent, with industrial action in many sectors including rail and communications. Ministers are failing to lift a finger to avoid walkouts and even barristers are taking action.

I met with a group of Southwark barristers in Parliament to discuss their concerns. I won back our community in 2015 after the former Lib Dem MP here cut access to legal aid whilst he was Minister for Justice in a Tory Government, a measure still adversely affecting jobs and access to justice for thousands of people across Southwark.

Whilst the Tories tear holes in one another, they are ignoring the issues affecting people here. Their 15 tax rises are hitting local working people and yet they ignore the need to regulate the digital economy, tax online sales fairly, and to overhaul business rates to better support our high streets. London should be the crucible of rebuilding after covid but is being punished by the Tories who ignore the poverty rates in our capital.

The Bakerloo Line extension is a shovel-ready project that would provide jobs, thousands of homes, and generate huge returns for the Treasury but is mothballed by Ministers. The Tories are also ignoring the fact that, in just two

months, energy bills will rise further.

Labour would cut VAT on home energy, but the Government has gone AWOL. Thankfully, England’s Lionesses have been providing the leadership so absent from our country elsewhere! It was fantastic to see England winning the Euros for the first time ever on Sunday.

It was amazing for Bermondsey to again make national news with the Kirby Estate showing support through a new mural of England footballer Fran Kirby who has promised to visit. We can all learn from Fran and the team’s spirit!

of London and these cuts will consequently devastate Southwark.

For this reason, our bus cuts motion asked the council to campaign to the London Mayor for a halt to the potential service changes, among other proposals.

Southwark Labour, however, successfully amended our bus cuts motion to direct all campaigning to only the Tories instead.

It’s pathetic, disingenuous and irresponsible for Labour councillors to absolve their Mayor of any responsibility.

But, this is the same Southwark Labour who voted at the same meeting to keep their ‘golden goodbyes’.

We’re the only council in the country that pay off disgraced councillors who break the code of conduct.

It’s so unacceptable for Labour to

repeatedly put party politics and looking after its own ranks ahead of standing up for residents.

This is all especially unnecessary when it is obvious that bi-partisan work delivers great results.

My Liberal Democrat colleague, Cllr Rachel Bentley, led our group’s call in June for the council to sign up to the Councils for Fair Tax Declaration. It was very welcome to see Labour agreeing to do so at the July council assembly.

We are delighted to see Labour listened as research shows most people want public money to be spent on companies that pay their share of tax.

It all goes to show, that it’s in residents’ interest for Labour to listen to this side of the town hall more often.

The simple truth is Labour do not have all the answers so they should stop acting like they do!

The government did it for Elizabeth Line

S

adly for Southwark and Lewisham residents, after the £18.9 billion Elizabeth Line, the days of big transport infrastructure projects in London appear to be numbered.

That project, which runs east to west across central London north of the Thames, was largely funded by the government, TfL and property developers, as well as other London companies, through increased business rates. The business rate supplement will continue to go towards the Elizabeth Line for years to come, so is not an option for financing the £7.9 billion Bakerloo Line Extension.

Why, despite years of campaigning by TfL, and Southwark and Lewisham councils, and widespread support among local residents, is the project still not getting enough government support? The Old Kent Road area needs more public transport, and with Southwark possibly losing several bus routes, options for getting around could be set to shrink further.

It is a shame that the government’s department for transport does not see how worthwhile investing in south London would be. Introducing the Tube would transform the area, bringing thousands of new homes and jobs, in turn providing opportunities for tens of thousands of people. A City Hall report found that not delivering the extension could cost between £3.6 and £6.4 billion in lost economic benefits.

The widely-praised Elizabeth Line also shows the importance of backing big infrastructure projects.

There was talk of the Coalition government axing the scheme in 2010, after the financial crisis - but it survived, and made it through delays, uncertainty and Covid-19 to open in 2022. Why can’t the government show the same commitment and foresight with the Bakerloo Line Extension now?

How could it go so wrong for Amele?

T

his week’s front page story tells the story of a woman who has suffered over a decade of torment since being forcibly decanted from her Heygate Estate home.

Amele spent nine years living in a putrid Walworth flat and when the council finally moved her to Catford while they fixed the house, she says he was erroneously evicted from her Catford flat too. This dignified woman was then subjected to the shocking indignity of spending nights in McDonald’s.

This was totally avoidable. When the council said it would force her to move out of the Heygate into the Walworth flat, she warned them it was filthy. They didn’t listen. Back in December 2019, Elephant Park, the development where Amelia’s home once stood, was transformed into “a mini-winter wonderland”.

Amele spent that same winter sheltering from the cold in the Old Kent Road McDonald’s, trembling hands clasped round a paper cup of coffee. For her, that winter was no wonderland.

Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis paired up again to create a musical they describe as part Greek tragedy, part Shakespearean court drama and part bio-historical sci-fi fantasia. The show was first produced in 2007 and the story revolves around a nation of yeasts led

by Jan the Elder. The king of the yeasts who wants to conserve the food sources that they have and not stray far from the sea bed. It is only when Jan the Second develops an emotional connection with Jan the Sweet that divisions form when some long for more from their existence and others compete for power.

The staging is minimal, the green and purple tones used to mimic the primordial soup make for a simple set.

It is oddly complimented with the cast all in lycra morph suits spotted with scraps of tutu tulle, that certainly make them look like strange things from the deep. What works best comes from the movement direction of Lucie Pankhurst.

Pankhurst’s interpretation of the movement of Yeast at the bottom of the ocean sets the tone for the bizarre and as the organisms grow and evolve, their movement does too.

The performers do the best they can without dazzling. Due to the sound mix they all have to belt out and screech their musical numbers, none of which are memorable. The book is far from slick and even owing to the barmy concept of the show, it is a bit of a mess. The tonguein-cheek humour gets repetitive and

old and along with the constant need to press home every pun and joke in the script with asides to the audience, any nuance to the humour is swiftly removed.

Director Benji Sperring also chooses to set the whole thing in Yorkshire, reasoning for which is never made clear and some of the cast’s Yorkshire accent work went from very broad to moving all

over the place, especially when singing.

Beyond the initial idea of trying to tell the earliest story in time, it’s hard to see what Gotis and Hollmann were wanting to say or achieve here. We are living in a world of changing climate and fewer resources so you can see where this satire found its beginnings, but developing that nascent idea into over two hours of

entertainment is something this show doesn’t manage.

I feel like making music

Following on from the success of Blue Note Re:imagined - fresh takes on music from the illustrious Blue Note vaults - a second Re:imagined album will soon be released with a fair amount of rising South London stars included on the 16-track compilation, writes Michael Holland...

has supported some great acts, such as Jay Electronica, Corinne Bailey Rae and Cory Henry.

Which all makes it no surprise that Blue Note reached out to her. ‘Of course,’ she says, ‘I jumped at the opportunity.’

For the album Kay has chosen ‘Feel Like Making Love’ by Marlena Shaw. ‘I wanted to cover that song as I remember falling in love with it the very first time I heard it. I loved how pure Marlena sounded on it, she didn’t over complicate it either. She did just enough at the right time. I wanted to show my appreciation by doing my own cover.’

But there is also Kay’s own work to discuss; ‘I have a new EP coming out, which I’m excited about, more shows and hopefully do a tour of my own.’

And it would be remiss not to mention the iconic Blue Note album covers, celebrated almost as much for their visionary artwork as for the legendary recordings. Designer for the Blue Note

Re:imagined campaign was Jay Vaz: ‘The Blue Note Re:imagined identity explores an abstract graphic notation score, aiming to represent the exciting energy and diverse range of artists that the new wave of jazz offers. Blue Note President Don Was says, ‘For more than eight decades the artists of Blue Note Records have continually pushed the envelope of contemporary music, and Blue Note Re:imagined II once again honours that legacy by letting the UK’s most creative young artists reinvent the treasures of the Blue Note catalogue through their own lens.’

Brockley singer Kay Young will be on the new album. She has been involved with music all her life and says, ‘I grew up in a musical household, so it was always around me from the day I was born. I knew from an early age that music is something that I wanted to do as it came

very natural to me.’

Kay’s early influences were her musical parents: ‘Watching my dad practise on his guitar daily taught me the importance on working on your craft every day. Also, my mum telling me stories of what it was like when she used to sing on stage and rock the crowd excited me, I wanted to experience that feeling.’

Kay explains how the likes of Michael Jackson and Prince played a major part of her music education: ‘They knew how to entertain and set the bar for many to come.’

She reveals that she is a ‘massive fan of Kendrick Lamar’ but also enjoys listening to all types of music. I was, though, surprised to hear Kay reveal, ‘I’ve been listening to a lot of Mamas and Papas lately and a lot of 70s’ psychedelic rock band music.’

From the minds that created the Tony Award-winning musical satire Urinetown, a show about a future in which water is so scarce, public urination is strictly forbidden and you need to pay money to use the toilet, the idea of a musical set three and a half billion years ago about yeast comes as no surprise, writes Christopher Peacock.

Yeast Nation: The Triumph of Life is that very musical and it comes to the Southwark Playhouse for its European debut.

Much ado about Palaeontology

You know instantly from his smile and friendly manner that you will like George Fouracres The Shakespearean actor with a name that could just as well be of a Shakespearean character.

But becoming a member of The Globe’s ensemble did not come by any of the regular routes, writes Michael Holland...

Born in the Black Country to a Shakespeare-loving librarian father and a mum with whom he watched Dad’s Army and Only Fools and Horses, you could say George had the best of both worlds and was quite theatrical at an early age: ‘I spent half my time dressed as Captain Hook or recreating Frollo’s key songs from the Hunchback of Notre Dame in front of the gas fireplace,’ he recalls.

Academic acumen shot him to Cambridge to study Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, but it wasn’t a place that he enjoyed. It was, though, a place where his love of comedy found an outlet via Cambridge Footlights, and George has since gone on to stand-up comedy, being part of acclaimed comedy trio Daphne (with Jason Forbes and Phil Wang) and become a highly-respected comedic writer and performer.

Comedy, however, was not an early goal set in the Wolverhampton of his childhood but something he feels is an intrinsic part of life: ‘I never really thought about comedy as any different to being alive,’ he says. ‘Laughter and life are interwoven. If you’re not laughing something absolutely terrible has happened.’

Yet, with a myriad of comedy shows to his credit, here he is playing in Much Ado About Nothing(until 23rd October), and The Tempest(until 22nd October) at The Globe where he is attracting most of the favourable reviews and having the time of his life. To be fair, though, George has not just come to The Bard’s works: ‘It was performing his plays that made me properly aware of them, and performed my first one in Year 10, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which I have since performed another two times.’

Talking about the plays is a top topic for Mr Fouracres, he becomes instantly enthused: ‘I think it’s the chance to play these larger than life, open characters that I love. There’s also some, dare I say, mystical, element of time travel to it.

Trying to plumb how someone felt and thought 400 years ago, and discovering which bits match up with how we think and feel today.’

And if these golden opportunities dried up? ‘I’d go back to university to study palaeontology somewhere.

Dinosaurs are my first and true love, I have a very, very minor diploma in Palaeobiology from the University of Alberta and I could never be bored doing that.’

I don’t think George Fouracres will be disappearing from the stage any time soon and can be seen at The Globe right now.

100 years of southwark park sports

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A local football club helped organise two matches to celebrate 100 years of formal sports being allowed on Sundays in Southwark Park.

Ballers Academy set up the games between two age-group teams from Canada Water and two from Lewisham and Deptford at the Bacon’s College pitches in Rotherhithe.

Honours were split evenly, with one Canada Water team winning and the Deptford team also emerging victorious in its match.

Local MP Neil Coyle gave out trophies afterwards. Pat Kingwell and Barry Marsh from the Southwark Park Association 1869, who helped organise the day, were also there.

Richard White, community development director at Ballers Academy, said the club “were delighted” to organise the matches “to highlight the great work that goes on in grassroots football which help inspire many young people to achieve their potential, improve their wellbeing and working together as a team.

“Bringing teams from neighbouring areas also helps build stronger, safer and more inclusive communities and special thanks to all the coaches who volunteer their time to give our young people the platform to take part in organised sports games.

“Special thanks to Patrick and Barry from the Southwark Park Association 1869 for making this event possible and to Neil Coyle MP for being our guest for the presentation.”

Mr Kingwell said that the association was glad to have been involved in sponsoring the trophies and hopes to be able to organise matches in future.

Although Southwark Park was first created in 1869, formal games were not allowed on Sundays until 1922, more than fifty years later. This was because London County Council (LCC), under pressure from churches, wanted to keep Sunday as a day of rest, according to Mr Kingwell, who has also published a history of the park.

The end of the First World War, which was a catalyst for sweeping social changes

across the UK, meant that calls to open up the park to organised sports gained momentum.

At a special meeting on July 22, 1922, the LCC approved g a m e s - p l ay i n g on Sundays, p r o v i d e d they were not competitive league matches in football, hockey or cricket.

A contemporary report from the Lewisham Borough News recorded some of the debate at the time. “BrigadierGeneral Cooper said he believed a great deal of disquietude on the matter of Sunday games arose from the fear that games for money might be played. It was the duty of the Council to go warily and slowly, and not to tread on the susceptibilities of Sabbatarians [someone who observes the Biblical commandment to rest on Sundays]. It was possible that after a year’s experience certain concessions might be made.”

On the other hand, “Mr Harry Gosling thought that the Council was taking a wrong line in cutting out league matches, because such matches were now controlled by recognised Associations.”

The change in the rule was an immediate

success. Bowls, football, lawn tennis and netball and boating were allowed from July 23.

The Southwark and Bermondsey Recorder reported on the widespread popularity of organised sports in the park.

“In spite of the showery weather most of the lawn tennis courts were occupied till 9 o’clock. Cricket was played by hundreds of men and boys, and where the turf was not too wet there was the dignified ceremony of bowls...The social revolution seemed to be accepted everywhere with little protest.

“Park attendants reported no complaints of any kind. Even the soap box orators did not appear to be disconcerted by the white-clad figures playing strenuously close at hand. Whether any considerable portion of the players had been to church in the morning was doubtful.”

Opposition continued from some churchgoers, who continued to argue that Sunday should be a day of worship and rest.

Interestingly, a Labour MP was also against the permission for Sunday games.

Charles Ammon, the MP for Camberwell North, argued that the new rule would erode workers’ rights and the shorter working week, according to Mr Kingwell.

The popularity of Sunday games continued to grow and grow, despite its divisiveness. A report to the LCC in July 1923 said that in the first year since

the new permissions there had been 29 games of bowls, 750 casual football games; and 385 tennis matches in the park.

The reports also showed that there had been 708 signed petitions in favour of Sunday games, about 19,773 signatures; and 234 against, with14,322 signatures.

There had been 125 letters in favour from organisations and 120 from individuals.

Some 262 organisations and 1,176 individuals sent letters against the new rules. In Bermondsey and Rotherhithe several churches said they were against, including Christchurch Rotherhithe, Jamaica Road Congregational Church, Drummond Road Baptist Church, Manor Chapel Galleywall Road, Gedling Street Mission and St. Barnabas Church Rotherhithe.

Sunday games were for adults only for six years. Only in 1928 were children were allowed to take part in tennis, netball, bowls and putting if they were accompanied by a responsible adult. This was also opposed by a religious group, in this case the South London Christian Endeavour Union and London Christian Endeavour Federation.

Opposition continued into the 1930s, Mr Kingwell said. In 1934, several people representing various Christian groups spoke out against Sunday games to the LCC, on the grounds that it encouraged gambling.

Southwark News, Thursday August 4 2022 sport@southwarknews.co.uk A YOUTHFUL Surrey side lost their first Royal London Cup Group A game as opener Nick Welch hit 127 not out from 125 balls and Wiaan Mulder cruised to an unbeaten 71 to help Leicestershire to a comfortable seven-wicket victory at Guildford on Tuesday.

Welch and Mulder’s unbroken fourth wicket stand of 141 was a Leicestershire record against Surrey in List A cricket and the win came with a full ten overs to spare.

There was a six and 16 fours in 24-yearold Welch’s career-best one-day innings, while Mulder clubbed two sixes and eight fours in his 65-ball knock.

A crowd of almost 3,000 packed into Woodbridge Road saw Ben Geddes hit 73, Josh Blake 44 and Nico Reifer a responsible 45 not out, but Surrey’s 50over total of 246 for 8 was never likely to be enough on such a fast-scoring ground.

Left-arm quick Beuran Hendricks, the game’s outstanding bowler, took 4 for 39 and nipped out both Ryan Patel and Cameron Steel in a five-over new ball burst of 2 for 14 before also claiming the wickets of Nick Kimber and Amar Virdi in the closing overs.

Leicestershire lost Rishi Patel for nought at the end of the second over, caught at point driving at a Tom Lawes outswinger, but Welch was then joined by Mulder in their match-clinching stand.

Yousef Majid, an 18-year-old Cranleigh School pupil on his senior debut, took a wicket with his fifth ball and impressed throughout a seven-over spell costing 19 runs.

But an entirely uncapped Surrey side – seamer Matt Dunn, at 30, and 26-year-old Steel were the only two players over the age of 24 in their line-up – was outgunned with both bat and ball after the Foxes had won the toss and opted to bowl.

Surrey, who have lost thirteen players to The Hundred – the most of any county – gave List A debuts to four players – nineteen-year old Lawes, Majid, lefthander Blake and off spinner Virdi.

Off spinner Nathan Bowley, in contrast, was Leicestershire’s only List A debutant and they have only four players representing Hundred franchises this month.

Patel’s dismissal for a second-ball duck, leg-before to Hendricks, was a significant early blow to Surrey but 21-year old Geddes, skippering the county for the first time, was then joined in a spirited third wicket stand of 105 by Blake.

Lawes made 21 before edging Scriven behind and Kimber’s 23-ball 27 helped to accelerate the scoring rate until Hendricks bowled him. Reifer’s 48-ball effort contained only three fours, but

The pair had added 111 in 22 overs for the second wicket when Sykes fell to Dodd for 68, off 69 balls. Schofield and Chris Purshouse then added 46 in nine overs for the third wicket

before the skipper fell for 16, off 23 balls. Veer Patel went quickly, but Frankie Brown (16 off 22) and Dan Crowley (18 off 19) helped Schofield lift the score to 222 in the 49th over when the latter’s innings finally came to an end. He had also batted for nearly three hours in scoring 81 off 136 balls. This was his third halfcentury of the season, and his second in successive weeks.

Crowley fell two balls later leaving Dulwich requiring 56 off the last eight overs. This brought together two of the 17 year olds in Khan and keeper Robbie Keaton, and they made a spirited attempt to go for the runs, securing a fifth batting point at 250 and the winning draw at 252. They had added 38 in 6.3 overs for the eighth wicket when Khan’s

serious chance of doing just that.” They have, at least, made an emphatic start to that ambition.

Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart said: “What everyone has to remember is that we have a very young team out there.

Our squad has been decimated by call-ups to The Hundred and a couple of injuries.

“But these games still represent a real opportunity for our young players to learn and to gain really good experience.

By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk A DULWICH side containing four seventeen-year-olds made a valiant attempt to chase down a challenging target in their AJ Fordham Surrey Championship Division 1 match against Valley End, but in the end it proved just too much and they had to settle for a winning draw last weekend.

dismissal for 19, off 23 balls, left 18 still needed off nine balls. Keaton and Jon Lodwick settled on survival and saw out time to finish on 264-8. Left arm spinner Ed Young was the pick of the bowlers, with 5-61 off 15 overs.

This was the fourth time in six weeks that Dulwich have narrowly failed to close out victory and had to settle for a winning draw. They remain in ninth place, but they take 12 points from this match and have closed the gap behind eighth place to 15 points.

This weekend, the format reverts to 50 overs per side where draws are no longer possible, so they will be hoping to turn these good performances into victories. But they have a difficult start, at home to second-placed Guildford.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET ended their pre-season campaign with a 2-2 draw against Maidstone United at the Gallagher Stadium last weekend.

Hamlet boss Gavin Rose named a strong side with Jack Holland and George Porter replacing two trialists, while Andre Blackman started in place of Kreshnic Krasniqi against last season’s National League South champions.

Dulwich created the first chance when Sam Deadfield found Nana Owusu but he missed the target with his effort.

The Stones, who had netted eighteen goals in pre-season, opened the scoring in the sixth minute. Frankie Raymond fouled Hady Ghandour to give Roarie Deacon the chance to curl the set-piece in from the left and the ball missed everyone as it bounced past goalkeeper Charlie Grainger.

It took the visitors just three minutes to level and Raymond was involved again,

finding Danny Mills who headed down for Porter to beat Yusuf Merson for his third goal in three games.

Maidstone lost Jerome BinnomWilliams to injury before the away side missed three chances, Deadfield firing wide, Dominic Odusanya heading off target and then a trialist midfielder went through one-on-one but failed to finish.

Down the other end, Grainger kept the scores level when he saved low from James Alabi late in the half.

Odusanya had the first chance of the second half but shot wide before Dulwich responded and Deadfield forced Tom Hadler into a save with a header. Porter and Mills then combined with Hadler saving the former’s headed attempt.

Hadler was called into action once more to keep out Porter’s low shot from Holland’s pass and from the corner Holland was denied by Deacon who cleared off the line.

Rose made what turned out to be an inspired change an hour in when Krasniqi replaced Blackman and scored within 90

seconds. It was the combination of strike partners Mills and Porter who set it up, the latter heading on to Krasniqi who went around Hadler to put his side 2-1 up.

There were some less than friendly moments late on when the referee ordered Porter to be replaced after the forward had reacted badly to being booked for dissent.

The Stones then had their chance to equalise when Deacon was fouled, which led to both sides coming together before the referee ordered the Maidstone player to be substituted.

Alabi eventually stepped up from twelve yards, but Grainger dived to his left to make the save.

But the home side were not to be denied for much longer and two minutes later Regan Booty found space on the edge of the area to fire past Grainger into the bottom corner.

The Hamlet had one more chance but Ronnie Vint headed over.

Amedu – who saved three penalties in the shootout in his side’s last friendly win before the start of the campaign – was at it again when he denied Fjord Rogers from the spot after Michael Sarpong had fouled Harry Stannard.

Fisher’s Darnelle Bailey-King was combining well with another debutant, Foday Jaiteh, and tested Whitstable goalkeeper Dan Eason who saved.

Fisher were having a good spell as the half-hour mark approached and Julio Da Mata looked set to be next to threaten the away goal only for the offside flag to go up.

But the game turned again in the 31st minute when Whitstable were awarded a second penalty as Joseph Adewunmi

fouled Jake Mackenzie. This time Ryan Flack stepped up and sent Amedu the wrong way.

On a hot day in front of 178 supporters in Rotherhithe, Fisher came out strongly after the break as they chased the game and Bailey-King tried a low shot that Eason was equal to.

The visitors were always a threat, however, and James Jeffrey shot over before Amedu saved Satanard’s attempt.

Fisher substitute Joshua Montella – signed from Peckham Town this summer – was fouled outside the box to give Sarpong the chance from the set-piece, but he struck the wall with his effort.

This is the first season with five

substitutes and it helped the visitors over the line. They had already sent on two players just before the hour and then made three more substitutions in the 88th, 92nd and 96th minutes to upset any attacking momentum Fisher were trying to create.

The hosts did have one more chance and it was the dangerous Bailey-King who was again involved as his cross from the right found Sarpong, but his touch didn’t help in setting up a clean strike and the ball went straight at Eason.

Fisher are in FA Cup extra preliminary round action this weekend – one of 208 ties – when they host Sutton Common Rovers. Kick-off at St Paul’s is 3pm.

Ukrainian Usyk, 35, inflicted the second defeat of 32-year-old Joshua’s career with a unanimous points win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last September to take the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles.

Unbeaten cruiserweight Riakporhe, 32, has been in camp with Joshua, who is aiming to become a three-time world champion.

Joshua changed trainers after the defeat last year and is now working with Robert Garcia and Angel Fernandez, with Riakporhe involved in the preparations for the highly-anticipated – if controversial because of the human rights record of the country it is being staged in – bout in Jeddah on August 20.

Riakporhe is well-placed to judge Joshua’s chances as he has trained with Garcia and Fernandez.

“Both of them have a similar mentality, very, very aggressive,” Riakporhe said of the coaches.

“They don’t mind going in.

“All they care about is going into war, going to war but with intelligence.

“But we’re going to have to impose our will on our opponent. That’s the philosophy and it’s all about knockouts.

“That’s all they care about, honestly, knock them out and then it’s about how they get knocked out.

Because you can’t go in there just throwing bombs and not expect things back. You obviously have to be really strategic. It’s all about the results and that’s all they care about.

“You’re going to see that oldschool fighter. I know because he’s been training like that.

“It’s kill or be killed and I think this is what you’re going to see from Joshua on August 20 – you’re going to see something different.”

Whitstable were relegated from Step 4 last season and are one of the favourites for the title. The visitors started strongly and it took important saves from goalkeeper Samuel Amedu, who was making his debut, to prevent the Fish from falling behind early on.

Bradders targets top six charge Millwall striker discusses promotion ambitions, his ‘natural chemistry’ with Benik Afobe and why he won’t set personal targets

The striker had two good chances to score early on in the second half, but couldn’t fire the ball past Joe Bursik. When he eventually did find the back of the net, he saw his goal ruled out for offside.

Ultimately, it didn’t matter. Charlie Cresswell scored his second goal of the game soon after, sealing a 2-0 win for the Lions on the opening day of the Championship season.

Setting aside his personal goalscoring ambitions, Bradshaw, 30, told the News that he was delighted to be able to play in front of fans once again after finishing preseason.

“It’s one of those things in pre-season where everyone goes out to do the right thing and work as hard as they can do, but it’s almost impossible to perform how you do energy-wise because of the enthusiasm that the fans give. It’s infectious and it

really gets into the team, I think that really showed in our performance on Saturday.

“I felt that there was no phase in the game where we looked low on energy. It looked like we got stronger as the game went on and that resulted in the performance that we gave.”

The victory was made even sweeter by Cresswell’s debut brace, something which impressed Bradshaw, who believed that he could’ve scored three goals in his first competitive game of his loan spell at The Den. “I think every corner we had after he scored his second, he was odds on to get his hat-trick!” the former Barnsley man joked.

“I asked Shacks [Jamie Shackleton] on the side whether any centre-back has ever scored a hat-trick on their Championship debut. I can’t imagine they have.

“I thought he was a banker to get it, to be fair. He was brilliant, two great finishes.

Obviously it was a great save from the ‘keeper from a header in between the two goals as well. He was a real threat from set pieces all game, and I thought he defended incredibly well.”

The centre-back obviously made the biggest contribution of all the new signings on Saturday afternoon, but Bradshaw believes that all five summer additions have settled into the first-team squad, and that this can help the Lions “I think it was clear to see on Saturday, they’ve bedded in extremely well. I thought Shacks was brilliant, obviously Benik [Afobe], although it doesn’t feel like he’s a new signing because he was here all of last year. He feels like part of the furniture now really.

“All the signings have been extremely beneficial to the team, and hopefully the performance on Saturday will continue through the season.”

His strike partnership with Afobe is something that he truly relishes, with the pair having scored 21 Championship goals between them last season. Bradshaw went on to highlight the importance of bringing the former Stoke forward back to South Bermondsey on a permanent deal.

“For myself, I was buzzing that we brought Benik back. Just because, from my perspective, we seem to have a natural chemistry. It’s something that I really

enjoy, playing up top with him. It makes football a lot easier when you’ve got a good understanding with another player.

“It’s something that I find really enjoyable and I think it’s really beneficial for the team.”

It all forms part of Millwall’s ambitious plans to break into the top six, having signed five players this summer while breaking their transfer record to bring Zian Flemming to the club from Fortuna Sittard.

Bradshaw agrees that this is their best chance to earn promotion to the Premier League, having just fallen short of a place in the play-offs in the last three seasons.

“I think that’s where everyone wants to go with the club, everyone’s striving in the same direction. The club, the fans, the players, we all want the same thing, which is to get promoted.

“It seems like everyone’s on the same wavelength, everyone’s pushing to go that extra bit further than we did last year to try and get into that top six. I don’t see any reason why we can’t.

“I think the strength in depth that we’ve got this year, all you’ve got to do is look

at the subs we had on Saturday. Even the lads who didn’t come on, we’ve got a really strong squad this year, and if we can stay consistent throughout the season and keep energy levels high, I don’t think there’s any reason why we can’t get into the top six.”

Although he understands the pressure to perform in order to maintain a spot in the starting lineup, he doesn’t want to set personal targets this season, claiming that he “used to do that all the time”.

“I got rid of that last season in terms of thinking too far ahead and setting too many targets in order to pre-plan football, because it doesn’t work like that. For me, what I found worked well was playing every game as they came and enjoying it and being instinctive.

“I think that’s when I play my best football and when I score the most goals.

That’s something I’m taking into this season as well, just going into every game as a fresh slate to enjoy it. Personally, that’s where I get my most success.”

Most teams are still rusty or trying to bed in lots of new players, and it can often lead to a lethargic start before

everyone gets up to scratch.

However, with every team having played once, Millwall find themselves at the summit of the Championship table on goal difference. Of course, there’s a lot of football to be played, but the Lions couldn’t have wished for a better start to the campaign.

Gary Rowett’s side secured a 2-0 win on the opening day of the season against Stoke City, a result that doesn’t paint a true picture of how the match played out.

The truth is that Millwall were by far the better team, and they tried to show it from the off with a handful of chances in the early stages. It didn’t take long for them to open the scoring, however, as Cresswell rose highest to head George Honeyman’s cross into the back of the net after just 12 minutes, scoring his first professional goal.

As Stoke began to grow in confidence, their final ball failed to improve. Tyrese Campbell fired a fierce effort straight at Bartosz Białkowski just after the half-hour mark, but the Polish ‘keeper almost allowed it to trickle over the line.

His blushes were spared by goal-line technology, however, allowing him to claw the ball away from danger at the last minute.

Perhaps the break came at the perfect time for the Lions, as they started the second half even quicker than the first.

But from the resulting corner, the Leeds loanee tapped the ball into the net from close range to seal the win with 65 minutes on the clock.

Three points, two goals and a clean sheet created the dream start for Rowett’s men, especially debutant Cresswell, who will surely be one of the first names on the

By Alex Jones at The Abbey alexj@southwarknews.co.uk THERE’S NO doubting that Millwall’s main aim for this season is to secure a top six finish in the Championship.

That means that competitions like the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup often take a backseat, especially in the early stages of the season, but you’d never have guessed it when you saw the team that Gary Rowett chose for the Lions’ trip to Cambridge United.

The Millwall boss opted to make six changes from the side that beat Stoke on the opening day, but the lineup remained strong. The likes of Charlie Cresswell, Murray Wallace and George Honeyman all kept their respective places in the

team, while Danny McNamara, Shaun Hutchinson and Mason Bennett were amongst those brought in.

Another player who started on Tuesday evening was Tom Bradshaw, although his time on the pitch was incredibly short.

He injured his groin just one minute into the match after firing a shot out of The Abbey and was unable to continue, with Isaac Olaofe coming on in his place. It was an ominous start, and unfortunately for Millwall, it was a sign of things to come.

The Lions went on to dominate possession in the early stages, but failed to create any clear-cut chances. Mason Bennett saw one effort blocked before it could reach Cambridge goalkeeper Will Mannion, before firing another shot miles wide after 15 minutes.

Millwall were dominant from set pieces against Stoke City, but had no such luck in the first half in Cambridgeshire. The U’s were comfortable when defending corners - the only time they looked vulnerable was when Shaun Hutchinson broke free from his marker, but he headed wide.

Cambridge began to grow into the game as half-time approached, although like Millwall, they were unable to get a

shot on target. Both sides became much more physical, with George Honeyman picking up the first booking of the game for pulling back Shilow Tracey just after the half-hour mark.

When the whistle was blown for halftime, neither team had mustered a shot on target. If any game felt destined for penalties, it was this one.

The start of the second half didn’t follow the same trend, however. Both sides had good chances soon after the restart. Olaofe hit the side netting from a quick counter before Tracey started causing problems down the other end, almost forcing Hutchinson to turn the ball into his own net.

An opening goal seemed imminent, and it looked as if it would be Murray Wallace who would make Cambridge pay once again. The defender scored twice when the two sides met at The Den last season and was looking to get his third goal against the U’s, only for Greg Taylor to deflect his curling effort onto the crossbar and out for a corner.

The imminent goal ultimately came down the other end, as Jack Lankester’s ball found Liam O’Neil on the edge of the penalty area. He was afforded far too

much space to get his shot away, driving a powerful effort past George Long to give the hosts the lead just before the hourmark.

Things went from bad to worse when Honeyman was given his marching orders two minutes later. The midfielder picked up his second yellow card for bringing down Jack Lankester after 61 minutes.

It left Millwall in a near-impossible position where they were chasing the game with ten men, although Olaofe was presented with two opportunities to equalise late on. His first effort was saved by Mannion at close range, while the second one saw him clip the crossbar with a header. It epitomised the Lions’ evening - everything seemed to go from bad to worse.

Crashing out of the Carabao Cup in the first round isn’t necessarily the worst thing for Millwall. Had the Lions secured a place in the second round, it would’ve added another midweek game in August, sandwiched in between Tuesday night trips to Swansea and Burnley.

The manner in which it happened was much more concerning, however.

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL’S IMPRESSIVE record against Sheffield United should give them confidence ahead of Saturday’s trip to South Yorkshire.

League One outfit who rarely had to leave first gear, and given that the Millwall boss chose a surprisingly strong lineup, it leaves question marks as to whether or not many will be ready for Saturday’s trip to Sheffield United. It can’t be forgotten that Cambridge ended up making nine changes to the team that beat MK Dons on the opening day.

That being said, most of Millwall’s squad will have to be ready, because injuries to Bradshaw and Zian Flemming will leave the Lions short of attacking options when they return to league action. Honeyman’s suspension also leaves a void in the team ahead of travelling to South Yorkshire this weekend.

Lessons have to be learned if Millwall are to bounce back at Bramall Lane, a stadium that has been a happy hunting ground for them recently. If the Lions can show that their defeat against Cambridge was nothing other than a blip, then all will be forgotten in the coming weeks.

But performances like this have derailed Millwall in the past. Rowett’s job now is to make sure that heads don’t drop, and to guarantee that his players can replicate the performance they put in against the Potters last weekend.

Shaun Hutchinson played his first competitive game of the season

Gary Rowett’s side did the double over the Blades last season, winning 2-1 at Bramall Lane and 1-0 at The Den to pick up maximum points.

That isn’t to say that they won’t provide a stern test for the Lions. After all, they reached the play-off semi-finals last season after an impressive run of form towards the end of the campaign.

In fact, they were incredibly unlucky not to make it all the way to Wembley, losing on penalties against eventual winners Nottingham Forest after playing out a 3-3 draw across both legs.

However, the two sides have started the new campaign in contrasting form.

While Millwall eased their way to a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Stoke City, Sheffield United fell to a 1-0 defeat away to recently relegated Watford on Monday evening.

The Blades, who remained defensively resilient throughout most of the game, ended up conceding from their own corner routine after they were hit on the counter, allowing João Pedro to score the winner just before the hour-mark.

Millwall will pose a much different threat to the Hornets, however. The Lions don’t boast the same pacy frontline as Watford’s trio of Pedro, Emmanuel Dennis and Ismaïla Sarr.

Instead, Rowett has a much more physical side at his disposal, one that will be more direct than what Paul Heckingbottom’s side faced in their opening game.

As the home team, the pressure will likely be on the Blades to secure their first win of the season. They’re the favourites going into the game and have a point to prove against Millwall given how poorly they played in both games against the Lions last season.

If they’re to do that, they’ll have to be much stronger on set pieces than the Potters were on opening day. Millwall were, in reality, quite quiet from open play. Although their output in the final

third was more inconsistent than poor, they were much stronger from corners.

Each one was powered towards the head of Charlie Cresswell, giving the Leeds loanee a good chance to score a debut hat-trick.

Considering that his centre-back partner, Jake Cooper, has scored a goal in each of his last three games against Sheffield United, the Lions will surely be hoping that their defenders can contribute up the other end of the pitch.

Rowett will be without Zian Flemming, who injured his MCL after Saturday’s win against Stoke. Tom Bradshaw may also be unavailable, having hurt his groin against Cambridge United, while Honeyman will miss the game after picking up a red card against the U’s.

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk SHAUN HUTCHINSON provided a candid analysis of his side’s exit from the Carabao Cup and urged his teammates to return to their best ahead of Saturday’s game against Sheffield United.

The Lions lost 1-0 to Cambridge United on Tuesday evening, confirming their exit from the competition in the first round.

“It was really disappointing,” the Millwall captain told the News.

“Everything that we did well on Saturday was missing today. The gaffer mentioned that if you were a neutral, you wouldn’t have been able to decide who was the Championship side.

“There was a lack of quality and we

didn’t turn up. Cambridge played well and got the win.

“Obviously Bradshaw going down straightaway didn’t help us and the red card never makes things easy, but we weren’t at it at all.

“I thought we started the game quite bright. We put a few contesting balls in behind and we were on the front foot, but after that we never really got going and never showed our quality.

“That’s what happens when you go to the lower leagues in the cup. If you don’t perform, you get nothing.”

The defender believes that the Lions can bounce back from the defeat and reach the same performance levels as they did against Stoke City on the opening day of the Championship season.

However, he admits that some of the players might struggle to nail down a place in the starting lineup off the back of a poor

“We’ve got to put this one to the back of our minds and try to focus on the positives that were there on Saturday. We need to try and get back to the form we showed then, because I thought we were really good.

“We’ll try to get back to the strengths of what we showed in the league, but it’s a bit frustrating because there’s a few boys who didn’t start against Stoke that wanted to impress today. They probably haven’t done enough to force their way into the team.

“It’s an opportunity in a competitive game to try and show the gaffer that you want to be in the starting lineup.

We didn’t do enough tonight and credit to Cambridge, they did. They took their chance when it came along and deserved to get into the next round.”

by exiting the competition, Millwall’s fixture congestion will become much more manageable ahead of a tough run of matches in August.

Manager Gary Rowett has voiced his concerns over the regularity of games so early in the season, but by exiting the Carabao Cup, the Lions will have eight days to rest between their trip to Norwich City and their home match against Reading.

“You never see it like that because you want to win every game of football that you’re involved in,” Hutchinson claimed.

“It’s an opportunity to play the guys that aren’t starting much. With a congested fixture list, it gives them a chance to show what they’re capable of in a competitive game.

“Hopefully we can rest up the injuries, and obviously the suspension which isn’t helping things, but it wasn’t a great night for us.”

The striker hasn’t featured for the Welsh national team since 2018, but hopes that he can force his way into Rob Page’s plans if he can start the Championship season well.

Speaking to the News, Bradshaw confirmed that he would “definitely” like to be involved in the tournament if he got the chance, but that his main focus is on performing for the Lions.

“It’s been a little while, but every footballer’s ambition is to play for their country, especially when there’s a tournament as big as the World Cup coming around the corner.

“But that’s something that’s out of my control in some ways, where all I can do is play well for Millwall and score as many goals as I can between now and when the World Cup starts.

“Fingers crossed that I might be considered, but that’s out of my hands and all I can control is how I play for the club.

“I think any footballer on the planet would love to be involved in a team that’s going to the World Cup. I think the experience of that alone would be amazing.

“It’s something I’d love to do, but my sole focus at the moment is scoring goals for Millwall. Obviously success leads to success, so hopefully it could be a possibility.”

If Bradshaw isn’t called up for this year’s tournament, the Lions will likely have their entire firstteam squad available throughout the extended international break in November and December.

Tom Bradshaw scored nine goals in just 23 Championship games last season.
