By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A TfL report has found that the Dulwich Village Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) is “the root cause” of congestion on Croxted and Norwood Road.

Until now, Dulwich Village’s Labour councillors have either rejected claims there was increased congestion or suggested the LTN may not be to blame. But local residents say the ‘Herne Hill Signal Report’ vindicates their long-held belief that the LTN has increased traffic on boundary roads.

A Croxted Road resident, who asked not to be named, said: “The report is a relief because it feels like we’ve had two years trying to prove what was clear as day and it felt really frustrating and upsetting to be told this wasn’t the cause of the problem.”

Another Croxted Road resident, who also asked to remain anonymous, said: “The report directly reflects our lived experience. All the data produced by the council until now has been weaselling out of it.”

Phase 1 of the LTN implemented in June 2020, during the first lockdown, closed Calton Avenue to all vehicles except cyclists.

Phase 2, introduced in November 2020, closed Dulwich Village between 8am and 10am and 3pm to 6pm to all general traffic vehicles.

The report says: “Herne Hill is the best logical alternate route for northbound drivers who are otherwise unable to travel through Dulwich Village. This has caused increased flow through this section of the network resulting in increased congestion.”

This contradicts a report previously commissioned by Southwark Council which said: “Perceived impacts reported in the consultation such as… increased traffic on boundary roads and longer bus journeys were not evidenced in the monitoring reports.”

Dulwich Village’s Labour Councillor Richard Leeming has often used Twitter to argue boundary road congestion had causes other than the LTN. He previously tweeted: “Without the data it isn’t possible to directly attribute the situation on Croxted Road to a single cause.”

In a controversial twist, the News revealed on Saturday, July 23, that local residents believed Cllr Leeming tried to delay publication of the report, saying councillor’s concerns had not been included.

Before a meeting about signal changes on the Herne Hill junction, a council officer sent the report to numerous contacts, including the Croxted Road Residents’ Association.

I’m very glad to say we have made real progress in Dulwich, with monitoring data showing an overall reduction in traffic.

Given this success, there are no plans to remove any of the Dulwich measures, which are fully supported by TfL. “We will continue to work with residents and TfL to reduce traffic further, supported by analysis of data and continuous review. It is positive to see this TfL report confirm that recent changes to traffic signals have improved bus journey times and traffic flow on Croxted Road.

“We’ve asked TfL to now produce and publish a full area report for Herne Hill, to provide a complete and accurate picture going forward.

This will help us to continue to reduce traffic and create healthier and greener streets.”

Posh squatters and bin locker brothels, housing officer Charmain reveals all

Her new book ‘The Estate’ offers readers a peak behind the curtain, an eavesdrop on the stairwell, and an unapologetic insight into council estate life.

“He wouldn’t go into the bathroom and he would hoard his urine and number twos. There were bottles of urine on the window sill. But it did look pretty when the sun shone through - you have to see the positives in everything.”

Charmain Bynoe, 60, the star of Channel 4’s critically acclaimed ‘Council House Britain’, is the Resident Services Officer for Peckham’s Acorn and Oliver Goldsmith Estates. She is the first port-of-call, shoulder to cry on and troubleshooter for roughly 700 tenancies and 3,500 people.

A council worker for 23 years, she says she wrote the book to show what her job really involves: “People say ‘oh you evict people’ but that’s not what it’s about … we’ve had complaints made against us and people shouting us telling us we don’t know to do our jobs but we understand it’s through their frustration.”

stories from her career - from the harrowing to the heartwarming.

In one chapter, she details how pimps moved into an estate and used the bin lockers as pop-up brothels. “When the estate’s workers start early in the morning the evidence is everywhere. There are condom wrappers all over the floor and sticky streaks up the walls where they’ve been chucked away.”

Asked how she copes with the emotional stress, Charmain said: “When I first started I would get very emotional about things I saw. When you’re the point of call to solve that problem for people it can eat away at you mentally. I know we’re not doctors but you do have to get the point where you cut yourself out. Don’t take on the emotional baggage of it because then you can’t help someone. It does grate on you - certain things you see, certain things you hear…”

A recent report by the Institute for Government think tank found that cuts to neighbourhood services since 2010 have left English councils “hollowed out”.

Charmain says she feels the dwindling resources. “There is no money! It’s not that we want people to live in mould and damp. The resources aren’t there because of government cuts. Every single borough is going through the same thing.”

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A 250-pipe organ has been installed at London Bridge station so commuters can enjoy its majestic tones on the way to work.

Just as the new organ was being set up, the UK’s most celebrated young organist turned up unannounced, on Sunday, July 16.

Anna Lapwood, 26, (pictured) caught wind of the new pipes, came to visit, and played to an astounded crowd for five minutes.

Martin Renshaw, an organ builder for over 50 years and founder of the charity Pipe Up for Pipe Organs, said: “She rocked up and I thought ‘oh not another one’. I hadn’t quite recognised her but it soon became apparent who she was. She played absolutely brilliantly.. it was lovely.”

Pembroke College, Cambridge, said: “I had been told about it and just went to see if I could find it and saw it behind a barrier and they let me have a play.”

Pipe Up for Pipe Organs is a charity that rescues threatened pipe organs by restoring them in situ or rehoming them.

Mr Renshaw said: “Churches are closing at the rate of one a day and organs are becoming the collateral damage of failing institutions.”

The London Bridge organ comes from a United Reformed Church in Whetstone, North London, which no longer needed the instrument. Now installed in the station’s Stainer Street, the organ was made around 1880, and has a swell-box and a full range of pedal pipes played from a 30-note pedal keyboard. A swell box is a chamber containing a set of pipes which has shutters that open or close to regulate volume.

have the power to shake an entire building but it can also play so quietly that you can barely hear it. There’s no other instrument that has such a range”, said Ms Lapwood.

Mr Renshaw explained that from the 19th century to World War I, the UK was Europe’s leading producer of pipe organs.

But with UK churches rapidly closing, Mr Renshaw transports organs to places where they’re wanted, such as Eastern Europe where churches are still being revived thirty years after the fall of the Soviet Union.

A documentary - ‘Organ Stops - Saving the King of Instruments’ - has been made about Mr Renshaw’s quest to save organs and is currently touring the UK. The London Bridge organ was set up on Sunday, July 17 and should officially open to the public the weekend beginning Saturday, July 30.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk An inquest into a woman who lay dead in her Nunhead flat for over two years has seen housing association Peabody admit “they didn’t join up the dots”.

The skeletal remains of Sheila Seleoane, 58 at the time of death, were found at her Lord’s Court flat, St Mary’s Road, Nunhead, when police forced entry on February 18, 2022.

A police blunder also meant Peabody was incorrectly told Ms Seleoane was alive a year after she’d died.

Giving evidence at the inquest on Thursday, July 21 at Southwark Coroner’s Court, DCI Fisher said her remains were reduced to “bones and dust”.

She was found curled up on the sofa, still wearing her blue pyjamas and white top, the court heard.

The coroner said a situation where a body lies undiscovered for so long was “difficult to fathom” in 2022.

Police concluded, partially from the sellby dates on food in her fridge, that she’d died around August 2019, approximately 29 months earlier.

Neighbours had raised the alarm on multiple occasions that Sheila was missing and bad smells were coming from her apartment.

As early as September 2019, a neighbour complained maggots and flies were entering their home from Sheila’s window but Peabody failed to take meaningful action.

One neighbour reportedly said: “There’s no excuse for why Peabody didn’t do something before the pandemic. There’s a lot of things that have been missed that they didn’t consider.”

Another resident, who first reported a foul stench in September 2019, reportedly said Peabody did not take their concerns seriously, saying: “It doesn’t make sense to me that she had no-one. No-one noticed she was missing.

“There are still so many unanswered questions, so many gaps. More could have been done. It’s not been good enough.”

But Peabody was still receiving rent payments because it successfully applied to get rent paid directly from Sheila’s universal credit in March 2020.

Given that Sheila had made consistently paid rent on time prior to August 2019, coroner Julian Morris asked Wells Chomature, Peabody’s Director of Neighbourhoods, whether this raised “internal alarm bells”.

Mr Chomature said despite evidence pointing to Sheila’s change in circumstances they did not “join the dots to paint a picture”.

The coroner concluded that the lack of communication between Peabody’s rent team, neighbourhood team, and the gas inspectors meant they did not raise suspicion something might be wrong.

Harriet Harman, MP for Camberwell and Peckham, has previously said the events surrounding Sheila’s death are “telling a much bigger story”.

“It is important that social housing works well … Having good systems these things matter irrespective of the awfulness of the death, they should matter to all tenants,” she said.

An error by a police controller also prevented Sheila being discovered earlier.

Responding to neighbours’ calls, police visited the property on October 15 and 21, 2020.

They had no contact with Ms Seleoane because they did not feel they had adequate justification to enact S17 powers which allow police to force entry to properties.

When Peabody contacted police, a controller mistakenly reported from an incorrect entry on the system that she was alive and well.

Giving evidence, DCI Amanda Mawhinney said the controller no longer works for the Met Police. If they did, DCI Mawhinney said they would have been recommended for an “unsatisfactory performance process”.

She said there had been subsequent

“I found the location of the stolen phone.

It was one mile from me [in Brockley]. I called the police, because I know where it is. I followed it in real time. I called the police and asked them to come. Police didn’t come.”

She said she went herself to where the phone was. “I saw one boy, who went into the shop, a small shop... I called 999. They asked me to call 101. Then they said they cannot help me, goodbye.”

Ms Nesterova said that she decided not to approach the young man herself because it could be unsafe, and he could have bought the phone after it had already been sold on.

“It happens a lot in this place, I’ve spoken to other people. And the boys - they followed me, that was the most scary thing. I saw them every day the week before.”

Ms Nesterova, a recent film school graduate, is now working on the production team of Masterchef, having

previously worked on the Ukrainian version before the war. “It was born in Britain, so it’s really nice to be here.”

And despite the theft of her phone, Ms Nesterova has not completely given up on the area. “When I came here, I thought ‘this place is wonderful’, and so different from how you imagine London. It’s a very nice place.”

A spokesperson for the Met said: “Police were called at around 20:50hrs on Tuesday, 12 July by a woman, aged in her 20s, who had reported that her phone had been snatched from her hand by a male on a pedal cycle in the area of Surrey Quays, SE16.

“He was in the company of two other males on bicycles. Officers attended and conducted an area search with the victim but none of the suspects could be located.

“The incident has been flagged to the local Safer Neighbourhood Team who will factor this in to their local policing plan. If information comes to light that can provide a tangible investigative lead it will be assessed and acted on accordingly. Woman who fled war in Ukraine falls victim to phone snatching in Rotherhithe Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A young Ukrainian woman who fled bombs after her home country was invaded has become one of the latest victims of Rotherhithe’s phone-snatching scourge.

Alina Nesterova was walking around the area on Tuesday, July 12, when she fell victim to a group of three boys who snatched her phone out of her hands and cycled off.

Ms Nesterova had come from Kyiv at the end of March, and her parents are still in Pavlograd, a small city towards the east in the Dnipropetrovsk region that has come under attack from Russian forces.

Ms Nesterova fled the war to London via Romania and France, settling in Rotherhithe and before the incident previously thought of the area as “delightful”.

But she appeared shocked by the response of the police to the theft of her phone. She said: “I don’t know what rights I have,” she said. “I am here

Due to the decomposed state of the body, the coroner’s decision as to cause of death was ‘unascertained’.

The conclusion of the inquest was an ‘open verdict’ meaning the coroner was unable to conclude a cause of death on the balance of probabilities.

In a statement responding to the conclusion of an independent report, Peabody Chief Executive Ian McDermott said: “We are devastated at what has happened. We are so sorry for our part in this and apologise to Sheila, her family, and everyone living at Lord’s Court.

“The report finds that in this case -

while we followed processes and made 89 attempted contacts with Sheila – our teams worked in silos and operated independently of each other which meant that we didn’t “join the dots” and realise something was wrong. When taking action in this case, we didn’t ask the most fundamental question – is Sheila ok?

“We have already made changes to some policies and are actively addressing all the recommendations in the report.

We are determined to be a more responsive, locally focused and connected organisation in the future. Our new ways of working will invest in customer-facing teams, break down silos, and put our values into practice.

“We will also develop new partnerships that focus on addressing social isolation, supporting good mental health and wellbeing through our community work, and we’ll work with residents and others to find an appropriate way of commemorating Sheila to make sure she is never forgotten.”

Tustin Estate to be redeveloped

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The Tustin Estate on the Old Kent Road will be redeveloped, after Southwark Council got planning permission on Tuesday week, July 19.

The council will build 690 new homes in its place, of which: 345 will be council flats, replacing the current 202 social rent flats 98 will be intermediate (80 per cent of market rate) for key workers 27 will be shared equity 220 will be for outright private sale The council will also rebuild Pilgrim’s Way primary school, shops on the estate and redevelop the green space, while refurbishing the terraced houses on Manor Grove, many of which are in a state of disrepair.

Residents of the 1960s and 1970s estate, which is at the corner of Ilderton Road and the Old Kent Road, voted to redevelop it in a ballot last year, after being given five options, including refurbishment. Just under two-thirds of residents took part, according to the council.

Speaking at the meeting on Tuesday night, an estate resident said: “The overall sentiment on the Tustin is supportive of the proposal, despite the testing period of the pandemic, lockdowns and we are very grateful.”

Some people objected to the redevelopment, favouring refurbishment instead. One objector claimed that “we are... headed for another Heygate”, referencing the Walworth estate that was sold off and demolished, although the Tustin will have more social rent homes than before.

demolition pulled down anti-demolition banners.

Dominic reportedly said: “An ‘estate representative’ spoke out against Manor Grove putting up banners asking people to save their homes from demolition.

Someone in fact pulled these banners down. But this same [individual] was found on a council meeting to discuss the plans soon after […] claiming that everyone was happy with the plans now, and they met everyone’s requirement.”

The council got full planning permission to knock down two of the buildings last night - Hillbeck Close and Ullwater House - and build four blocks in their place,

providing 167 council homes. Existing residents will move into these homes while the rest of the estate is being rebuilt. The council said that all current council tenants would have a right to return to the estate in a flat with the same number of bedrooms.

Outline planning permission - a decision on the general principle - was also given for the rest of the plan, which would see three blocks and a school demolished and twelve new buildings built in their place.

Cllr Darren Merrill, Southwark’s cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “I am delighted that these exciting new plans for the estate

preserved for its historical significance.

Ian McIness, chair of the 20th Century Society, said: “It’s still there pretty much untouched and it’s a special building because there are not many from that period.”

The property was built by Leslie H Kemp and Frederick E Tasker in collaboration with the builders Messrs Morrell.

The two architects and Messrs Morrell used Dorchester Drive as a showcase for their various designs. Neighbouring Dorchester Court and Dorchester House were also built as collaborations between Kemp, Tasker and the Morrell brothers.

Together, these buildings illustrate a range of 1930s approaches to residential buildings on a single street.

Resident leaseholders could be forced to sell off their property with a compulsory purchase order, although the council said

“it remains the intention to acquire all leasehold interests by agreement rather than by compulsory acquisition.”

Out of the new social rent homes, 143 will be one-bed, 82 will be two-bed, 87 will be three-bed, thirty will be four-bed and three will be five-bed.

That compares to an astonishing 60 studio flats in the current estate, thirty one-beds, 25 two-beds and 87 threebeds.

The news about the Tustin Estate comes about a month after the council got permission to knock down and rebuild the Ledbury Estate, on the other side of the Old Kent Road.

Art deco house in Dulwich saved from possible demolition

Built in 1936, 10 Dorchester Drive in Herne Hill was recently sold to a new owner, prompting local groups to fear it could be redeveloped.

But the property received Grade II listed status on June 13, offering it more protection against dramatic changes.

A spokesperson for the 20th Century Society (C20), which helped lead the campaign with the Herne Hill Society, said their success “really shows the power of collective action against the threat of demolition”.

The £1.6 million home was based on a design that won the Daily Mail’s 1934 ‘Ideal Home Exhibition’.

Its surviving original features include a ‘sun trap’ bay window, a retro bathroom and a ground floor plan that can be opened up into a expansive entertainment space.

Neighbours told local conservation groups that it could be getting altered after workmen informed them they intended to strip the inside of the property.

The C20 Society lobbied Lambeth Council to issue a Building Preservation Notice (BPN), to protect it from demolition while being assessed by Historic England.

Lambeth Council acted fast and obtained the BPN in February 2020.

Three to four metre high barriers have been put around the edge of the MIK festival site, which takes up much of the southern part of the park. The northern barriers are just south of the cafe, and the site stretches down close to the path next to the athletics centre. Security guards wearing red vests are patrolling around the edge of the site.

A mother and daughter sitting with their dogs next to the cafe said they weren’t happy with the festival building process taking two weeks. “Why is it taking so long? Two weeks for two days of music?” said Shelley on Thursday afternoon, July 21. The building process began last Monday week, July 18, and the site will not be clear again until August 8.

Southwark Council gave the festival the green light in June this year after a consultation that ran for several months.

The council originally gave approval in 2021, before Covid meant the festival had to be postponed. The event, meant to be the first of its kind in the UK, is selling tickets for £168 or £108.

The festival will run for two days from 12pm to 10pm, with a capacity of 15,000 people. Organisers have also got a license to sell alcohol on site until 9.30pm both nights, although the council said there will be no alcohol allowed on the site. Organisers have previously said they want to make the event an annual occurrence.

Local councillors, the Southwark Park cricket club - on whose pitch the festival is taking place - and two community groups representing the park, all said they did not want the event to take place.

But the council gave the event the go-ahead, saying it would pay for free community events like the Bermondsey

Carnival, which has been running in its present form since the mid-1990s, and traces its origins to 1900.

Unfortunately, the carnival is now not taking place this year, as we reported last week, because it only received £10,000 from the council, instead of the £35,000 it got for a smaller version last year.

“The kids love the carnival,” said Shelley.

“They’ve just broken up from school and now they’ve got all this blocking off the park.” Her mother, Beryl, agreed, saying: “It’s unfair - why this park?”

The Southwark Park Association 1869 have previously spoken out against the K-pop festival in the News.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The Brunel Museum has been given a £1.85 million grant to build a teaching and exhibition space that has been mired in controversy for more than a year.

The museum will create a new gallery within its engine house building, which will explain the history of father-and-son team Marc and Isambard Kingdom Brunel, as well as a new entrance building with toilets, a shop and a cafe. The museum will also be able to host watercolours by the Brunels in the engine house.

But many Rotherhithe residents oppose the project, which was given planning permission in December last year, because it would involve cutting down two mature trees. As part of the build, the museum said it would plant nine more trees elsewhere in the local area. Others have voiced concern about the topics the museum plans to teach - one local resident said they felt there was not enough focus on engineering, given the museum’s heritage - as well as the design of the new building itself.

Katherine McAlpine, the director of the 200-year-old museum, said she and her colleagues were “thrilled” to have obtained the grant, which came from the national lottery heritage fund. The museum also received more than £135,000 in May from the Arts Council.

She said: “Thanks to National Lottery

that has no connection to the area or its community.”

He added: “I wished the councillors that backed this high priced Korean pop festival could see the amount of families that were enjoying the Oval yesterday afternoon - these are the very same people who from today will be excluded from this part of their local park until 8th August. It’s shameful.”

Old Friends of Southwark Park, another group that seeks to represent the park, also spoke out against the festival. Josie Moore said she was “heartbroken” to see so much of the park blocked off to children. “What about the kids - they’re just breaking up from school?,” she said. “I think it’s a disgrace.” A lifelong

We’re hoping by enabling more people to learn about the amazing story of the Brunels, we can inspire the next generation of engineers.”

Rotherhithe ward councillors backed the museum at the planning stage, with Cllr Kath Whittam saying the new project would “take it to the next stage.”

She added: “I’ve lived in Rotherhithe for over 30 years. When I first moved in, the Brunel museum was open on one Sunday afternoon per month only. Since then it has grown and become more prominent, so that in normal circumstances it will be open almost every day.”

Building work should be finished by 2025.

Her friend Alan Jefferies, 77, has found himself unable to park his car and walk his dog in the park. Mr Jefferies finds it difficult to walk far, and normally parks his car on the eastern side of the

carriageway, near the Southwark Park Road entrance. But this part has had cones put on it, preventing him from parking his car. The other side is always full of commuters, so he has not been able to park there either. “I’ve been using this park for 60 odd years, it’s not fair on the local people.”

Kunalkumar Vaghasiya, who runs the Karma Supermarket on Southwark Park Road with his wife, said the incident when a shirtless young man stole three bottles of wine last week, was unpleasant enough - but it was worse fearing for the safety of his wife and young daughter.

Man jailed after ‘driving dangerously in police chase’

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A man has been jailed for dangerous driving, after a police chase down a quiet Bermondsey street earlier this month.

Christopher Gisanrin, 29, was sent to prison for six months after pleading guilty at Bromley Magistrates Court to driving a motor vehicle dangerously, failing to stop, driving with no insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

Gisanrin, who lives on Marden Square, also had his licence suspended for 27 months and was ordered to pay £154 in costs.

It came after a dramatic police chase on Sheppard Drive in the early evening of Thursday July 14, reported on by the News.

Police said Gisanrin and a passenger (a man aged just 18), did not stop when

they signalled for them to do so on Bush Road, near Surrey Quays station, at about 5.10pm.

Officers say the car drove west, coming into Sheppard Drive, a quiet residential street, where children are usually playing, pursued at speed by several police cars.

They reached the cycle path at the junction with Rossetti Road, which is blocked off by bollards. Police say the two men jumped out, chased on foot by officers, and were caught and brought back in handcuffs.

The eighteen-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class B drugs, taking and driving away, dangerous driving and failing to stop. Both men were taken to a south London police station. Gisanrin was charged with the driving offences and the younger man was released under investigation pending further enquiries.

But police said the alleged theft had not been reported to them, prompting Mr Vaghasiya’s call for everyone to report such incidents.

Mr Vaghasiya has run the shop for three years, taking over from his uncle who was there for thirty. He said: “I live above - this is my home. My daughter is here, she often plays around here. It’s about our safety as well.”

Dawn drug raids lead to two arrests herbie@southwarknews.co.uk An early morning police swoop on addresses in Herne Hill and Angell Town, Brixton, led to two arrests last Friday morning.

The suspects were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A and Class B drugs and remain in custody at a south London police station.

Officers descending on properties at Mayall Road, SE22, Marcella Road, SW9, and Ferry Mews, SW9, also discovered an imitation firearm.

The raids were part of an organised crackdown following concerns from

acts of violence in the Angell Town and Lambeth area.

“However, we cannot tackle the problem alone, which is why I would urge people to share any information they have regarding drug dealing, exploitation, or violent crime in their area. We all have a responsibility to make Lambeth, and London, a safe place for everyone. Community intelligence can be used to great effect to not only detect crime, but also to prevent it as well.”

Peckham man charged with murder of Jeremiah Sewell

Godfrey Tanishe Madondo, 19, of Colegrove Road, was charged along with Kadio Kadio, 18, of Crown Drive, Romford, on Tuesday, July 19.

They appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 20 July, where they were remanded in custody.

Police launched the murder investigation on Saturday, July 16, after Mr Sewell, from Bellingham, attended a south London hospital with stab injuries to his neck.

Tragically, he later died in hospital.

Two 19-year-old women who were arrested on Tuesday, 19 July on suspicion of murder and perverting the course of justice, have been bailed pending further enquiries.

An 18-year-old man arrested on Sunday, 17 July on suspicion of murder has also been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The classic Routemaster, had “entertainment” on the upper deck, and set off from Wandsworth Town Hall at 9am on Sunday, July 24. It arrived at the west side of Burgess Park, near Addington Square, at 4pm, having stopped off at numerous south London locations.

The environmental group added: “These cuts will also affect the poorest and most vulnerable transport users. London is the most expensive city for public transport in the world. Buses are the cheapest way to

go around London using public transport.

Many rely on them to get to work, visit family and go about their daily business.

“Public and active travel are not only cheaper and more efficient than private cars, they also help reduce our carbon emissions. Nearly 10,000 Londoners die every year from air pollution.

“We need our local and national governments to invest in infrastructure and transport that is cheap and better for the environment.”

People were invited to follow the bus on their bikes, cargo bikes and mobility scooters and other means of active or sustainable transport.

TfL is unusual for a transport agency in a major city in that about half of its income comes from fares, rather than being

subsidised centrally. Buses in London were loss-making and subsidised by other parts of TfL before the pandemic, to the tune of about £700 million in the 2019/2020 financial year. TfL said even before Covid that its bus network was “unsustainable”.

As the News reported last week, Southwark Council aims to be the first local authority to bring school exclusions down to zero.

Exclusions are already significantly down in Southwark in recent years - from 49 in 2018, to to 36 in 2019, to just ten in 2020 – although this was during the pandemic. Children in Southwark are now less likely than kids in the whole of the UK to be excluded from school.

However, poorer children, children with special educational needs, and black children are still much more likely to be excluded than their peers. The charter has been praised by some, including former children’s commissioner Anne Longfield, but had criticism from others.

chief who presented the charter to the council’s cabinet meeting on Monday, July 18, came under fire on Radio 4 on last Thursday morning from a government educational advisor, who said eliminating exclusions could harm other children.

Tom Bennett said: “What the charter clearly states is that for any behaviour short of the most extreme behaviour, like knife crime and so on, schools should probably consider not excluding...

Exclusions are a necessary part of that process. In other words, we may not wish to exclude children – it’s a necessary thing to do.”

Transport for London (TfL) are proposing to cut sixteen bus routes and change or shorten many more. Four of the sixteen routes - the 12, 78, 45 and 521 under threat run through Southwark.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Coyle was joined on the visit by Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman and Southwark council leader Cllr Kieron Williams. The politicians met bus drivers to hear their views.

It has also been reported that some patients are having to be diverted to other hospitals.

The trust first reported problems via Twitter last Tuesday afternoon, as UK temperatures soared to 40.2C. A spokesperson for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust said: “We continue to respond to significant IT problems on our sites, which is having an ongoing impact on our services.

While the majority of appointments have gone ahead, unfortunately we have had to postpone some operations and appointments.

“We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused and our staff are doing everything possible to minimise the impact on patients. Where urgent care has been affected we will be contacting patients to rearrange their care at the earliest opportunity.

“The Trust has well established business continuity plans to allow us to continue as much activity as possible and to ensure that patient safety is prioritised at all times.

“Some IT systems are back online and our teams are working around the clock to fix these problems as soon as possible.”

This disruption will have been unwanted at a trust already grappling with a 91,000 person waiting list.

This month, we reported a terminally ill man had waited so long for an appointment with a Guy’s and St Thomas’ dentist that his teeth fell out.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Extreme heat has knocked out Guy’s and St Thomas’ trust’s (GSTT) IT systems, with some appointments being delayed and cancelled.

Doctors cannot access some patients’ digitally stored medical history so are using paper to log information, it has been reported.

The NHS trust is asking patients to bring letters and paperwork with them to appointments to “help us reduce the risk of delays”.

GSTT tweeted: “We are still working hard to fix problem with our IT systems.

We apologise if you had trouble contacting us or had any issues accessing our services.”

The council has been planting trees but some existing tress need watering

Thirsty trees are dying Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has “identified an issue” with one of the three companies it has hired to water its trees.

The council said it has planted ten thousand trees in the past year, and plans to plant another 20,000 but these trees need watering, especially with the recent scorching weather.

We reported in early May that some local residents were concerned that trees were not being looked after properly. The council said then that its three-year care plan “meets best practice” and that its contractors “are working on this plan, with [them].”

Unfortunately, it has now emerged that one of the three contractors that is supposed to water trees for Southwark appears not to have been doing so properly.

Responding to a question from Liberal Democrat Cllr Rachel Bentley, Southwark Labour’s head of parks Cllr Catherine Rose said that “in some

cases between four and six contracted visits [to trees] in April and May were either not attended or were inadequate”.

To put that in context, Southwark’s tree plan says that contractors have to visit trees twice in both April and May in their first and second years of life, and once in April and once in May in their third year.

This appears to be having a damaging effect on the trees the council has planted. Out of 400 trees inspected so far in the north of the borough as part of a monitoring programme, some 30 have been found to be in a bad condition, or need replacing.

The contractor foots the bill for any trees that have died and need to be replaced, so no trees will be lost in terms of sheer numbers - although these are living beings that have died from neglect, and some would also consider the loss wasteful in terms of its environmental impact.

Free tennis lessons for kids in Southwark Park Exclusive

The sessions, which are for children aged between seven and thirteen, run every Tuesday at 4.30pm-6.30pm. The

sessions started on July 26 and run until October 4. Equipment is provided for free.

Well-known local coach, Denis “Tennis” McMillan, is running the sessions, which have been funded by sports shop Decathlon and Canada Water Dockside developers Art-Invest.

Pat Kingwell, of Southwark Park Association 1869, said: “We are very grateful to Decathlon and Art Invest for

the grant which will allow youngsters to enjoy themselves with healthy exercise at no cost to their families.”

Comment Citizens’ Jury report is hard-hitting summer reading

inematic trailers smash together the most exciting moments of the films they promote. It’s a pity no one has done this yet for the climate emergency report

You might have read a short item about the jury in Southwark Life, the council’s own magazine. The four recommendations selected for mention there are blandly familiar.

Who could object to ‘affordable, accessible and appealing public transport’?

But Southwark Council isn’t in control of Transport for London. Highlighting public transport is a way of letting the council off the hook.

Nevertheless, London councils can - and should – be arguing hard for more climate action from Sadiq Khan. Unbelievably, this month he cut off the cycle training budget while ploughing money into the polluting Silvertown Tunnel.

In this case, the full-length report is far more dynamic than the trailer.

Southwark citizens have made dozens of smart suggestions about

housing and transport. As we look beyond July’s heatwave to a winter of people struggling to heat their homes, they propose that Southwark Council leads by example: retrofitting all its properties, and incentivising landlords who rent out poorly insulated homes to improve them by 2025 by offering discounts or loans on retrofit.

The language is direct and decisive. ‘Constructing new buildings should be a last resort’, they say.

The 7,000 empty or unused properties in Southwark should brought back into use: ‘If a building is found to be structurally sound, there should be compulsory retrofit instead of rebuilding.’

They call on the council to make ‘strong specific commitments’ and to report on progress.

They make clear that our survival requires much more than individuals reducing their own ‘carbon footprint’. They ask Southwark Council to give us all the ‘tools, encouragement and infrastructure for us to be equipped and empowered to act’.

I was incredibly sad to read this article in todays Southwark News, and I really feel the need to write this in total sincerity.

Philip Burkett? & Russell Dryden? (together with Eddie Webber?) all have one thing in common. They all have the rare blood group called ‘Bermondsey Positive’ running through their veins.

Since Eddie Webber made his original dream come true, and Phil & Russell took his vision to a whole new level, The Bermondsey Carnival has provided the ‘real’ local

people with a chance to see (FOR FREE) some legendary music artists perform for us.

Then Southwark Council decided to cut their funding (even though they must have made a

fortune from selling off the land formally occupied by Council Estates to property developers).

OK, maybe that’s the way things work these days, but I find it a very hard pill to

swallow, that the people who can afford to spend millions of pounds buying flats

uly is usually a humid month with thunderstorms and heavy rain showers with temperatures being typically around 25C. But this year temperatures climbed during the month reaching 40C in some places for two days before dropping back to more seasonal norms.

These high levels have never previously been seen in the UK and with no significant rainfall since May there is drought in the garden.

The ground is rock hard and daily hot air and drying winds are causing plant damage and die back. Thorough watering is needed morning and evening; this is especially important for window boxes, hanging baskets and pots. Lack of rain has turned the grass to straw but it should recover when regular rainfall returns.

Houseplants need more attention during the summer months; ensure leaves do not burn - this can easily

The (well-watered) borders and beds are full of colourful summer perennials and annuals including Delphiniums, Phlox, Dianthus, Sunflowers, Hollyhocks and Hydrangeas.

Despite their elegant habit and stunning display of flowers Delphiniums are rarely seen in gardens, they are tall summer perennials and

flowers come in a colour range of blue, mauve, pink and white. They can be tricky to grow successfully, but if they have well prepared fertile soil and are supported (with stout canes) Delphiniums are worth the effort - and are a magnet for butterflies. The newer dwarf varieties are easier to grow and don’t need support with canes.

Dianthus come in several different varieties but the border type are known as ‘Pinks’. These plants are a useful contribution to the summer garden.

Dianthus has a long flowering period which begins in June and lasts until August - often coming back again in early autumn. They also have a strong sweet spicy perfume, thrive in the town garden and are tolerant of a range of soil conditions, also tolerating air pollution. The modern hybrids have pink, white or scarlet flowers. Dianthus are perfect for window boxes – and the exotic aroma is a complement to the warm days of summer!

The community didn’t fail Sheila: the housing association and the police did

T

he story of Sheila Seleoane, the 58-year-old woman who lay dead in her flat for over two years, will prompt many of us to consider our own families and communities.

Who would notice if we were gone, and how long would it take? When was the last time we picked up the phone and called that relative who lives alone?

Given the loneliness epidemic in this country, the reaction is understandable. Elderly people often talk about the decay and disentanglement of once-tight-knit communities.

But the fact is, in Sheila’s case, her neighbours played their part. Even though she lived a solitary life, rarely mixing with others, they were quick to raise the alarm.

Over the months following her death, neighbours consistently told police and Peabody that something was amiss.

And when police finally burst through the door to find Sheila’s corpse, by then reduced to “bones and dust”, they were there because a neighbour had called.

Community didn’t fail Sheila - her housing association and the police did. Despite, tenants’ fervent red-flag waving, Peabody consistently failed to act, as did the police.

While a case like Sheila’s is thankfully rare, its underlying cause - the fragility of tenants’ rights - is not. It’s the sort of fragility that means tenants aren’t seen as living, breathing people, but numbers on a spreadsheet - useful only as long as rent can be extracted.

It’s a fragility that means when a reliable tenant suddenly stops paying their rent, the solution isn’t to check if they’re okay, but to apply to have rent redirected from their universal credit.

It’s a fragility that means when tenants complain of maggots and flies climbing into their window from the flat below, they’re still not taken seriously.

Peabody had been warned. In 2019, the union Unite warned its plan to cut housing management budgets by £1 million could have “devastating consequences to residents”.

As recently as October, Peabody put forward proposals to cut the number of housing managers from 80 to 65.

The housing trust has said it will make an number of changes to ensure this doesn’t happen again. It will ensure ‘tenant centric’ services, like gas, rent and neighbourhood teams, work in tandem to spot when a12/10/2021 tenant starts acting strangely.

Back street abortions in victorian walworth The tragic death of Eliza Wilson

The recent overturn of the Roe V. Wade legislation in the US Supreme Court has brought the subject of abortion to the fore, writes Neil Crossfield...

In 1973, the Roe V. Wade case gave American women a constitutional right to abortion. In England, the 1967 Abortion Act had become law, legalising abortion under certain conditions.

Before 1803, the Church had tacitly tolerated abortions, providing that they occurred before the ‘quickening’. This usually occurred at around 16-20 weeks, when the baby could be felt moving.

However, in 1803 the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Ellenborough, proposed the Malicious Shooting or Stabbing Act, which also contained clauses making abortion a criminal offence. Those found guilty could be fined, whipped, imprisoned, pilloried or even transported for 14 years. The maximum penalty was the death sentence, which was not repealed until 1837.

While illegal in the eyes of the law, some women still made the choice to have an abortion. There were many reasons for this, women who had already given birth to many children may have felt another mouth to feed would put financial pressure on her family. Sometimes the health of the mother could be at risk, necessitating a termination. Strict social conventions meant childbirth outside of wedlock could mean the stigmatization of both mother and child.

It is impossible to know just how many women had abortions in this period, as its illegality meant that official records were not kept. Yet many historians now believe that most areas would have had an ‘abortionist’ who would have carried out these procedures. In her book, City of Sin, Catherine Arnold says that some of these could be struck off doctors, others might be half trained nurses with a rudimentary understanding of obstetrics, and some would be ‘wise women’ who would administer herbs and tinctures with the aim to induce miscarriage. Many were just local women who had great experience in pregnancy and childbirth. They were fully aware of the trouble an unwanted pregnancy could cause a woman and would do anything they could to help.

With no legal route open to them, women had little option but to subject themselves to the dangers of a ‘backstreet abortion’. This was very much something which was carried on in secret, behind closed doors, but we often get glimpses of the murky world of the abortionist in newspapers and court reports, invariably when something had gone horribly wrong. One highly publicised case occurred in1848. This was the sad tale of one Eliza Wilson, who had an affair with a married man, had got pregnant and died following a botched ‘backstreet’ abortion in Walworth.

As well as extensive coverage of the case in national and local newspapers, several broadside ballads had been produced. As mentioned in previous articles, this form of street literature was cheaply produced for the masses. For some

sections of the community, this would be their primary means of getting the news.

Some enterprising printers also produced what were known as chapbooks. The subject of these books was varied and could include political events, almanacs, children’s stories, tales of heroism and crime. Like the broadside, these were printed cheaply. Large sheets of paper would be folded and sold in book form, some just a few pages long. Around 1848, C. Paul, a printer based at 18 Great St.Andrew Street Bloomsbury, produced one such chapbook, titled the ‘Full account of the extraordinary death of Eliza Wilson

by Mrs Linfield, Midwife at Walworth, caused by abortion’.

Though many backstreet abortions resulted in death, what makes this case interesting is that her statement allows us to view the process through the words of the victim, for in true melodramatic Victorian fashion, the story involves a deathbed confession by the dying Eliza Wilson. On 20th September 1848, while Eliza lay gravely ill at her father’s house in Woodcote Place, Norwood, she was visited by Samuel Elyard, J.P. for Surrey and Police Inspector Robert Emerson.

When they asked her if she thought she would recover, she had answered that she thought she would die. At this point they took a statement from the dying woman.

Born around 1816, she had been baptised Elizabeth but is called Eliza in all subsequent documents. Newspapers report her as coming from a ‘respectable’ family and that she worked as a dressmaker. In her final testimony, Eliza reveals that she’d had what she called ‘a criminal connection’ with a married man named Richard Orpin and that she had fallen pregnant. Eliza was single and had said ‘I never had connection with any other man’. At a later trial, Police Constable Joseph Armstrong, from Norwood police station attested that he had known both Orpin and Eliza for around four years and had seen the two together at all hours claiming that he had even seen Orpin kiss her. There is also some indication that

Orpin’s wife, Jane, knew Eliza, who had visited the Orpin’s family home.

When Eliza told Orpin that she was having his baby, he had said, ‘Stop till Monday, and we will go together to East Lane, Walworth, to a woman’. It is difficult to explain this as anything other than a suggestion that Eliza should terminate the pregnancy. How Orpin instantly knew where to go for an abortion is not known, but it would imply that he had some prior knowledge of services offered by Mrs Spencer Linfield of Walworth.

On Monday 4th September 1848, Orpin went with her to East Lane, looking for Linfield. As they were unable to locate her, Eliza returned alone the following day and met Mary Ann Dryden, an associate of Linfield. She gave Eliza a concoction of herbs for which she paid the sum of 4 shillings. These included ‘five-leaved grass, ground ivy and pilacotia’. During the investigation, many different herbs were found at the properties of both Dryden and Linfield. These included, savin, deadly nightshade and others which were commonly used to bring on miscarriage.

These proved ineffective, so on Wednesday 6th September, Dryden took Eliza to see Linfield, who resided at 24 Prior Place, East Lane. Eliza recalled being taken to an upstairs room of a herb shop where Linfield used instruments to perform operations on her. She did this on three separate occasions over the next few days. On one occasion she slept at Mary Dryden’s house afterwards.

Linfield’s son, William, was present and appeared to be aware of what was taking place at the premises. For this illegal service, Eliza had to pay Linfield the sum of £2 10 shillings. She had also given a few shillings to Dryden. Orpin had promised to give Eliza the money, but it transpired that he never did.

Eliza returned home to Norwood, but by the 12th of September she had become seriously ill. In severe pain, caused by infection, she had sent her brother back to Walworth to ask for Linfield’s assistance. Rather than hurrying to see

Eliza, she had given her brother a small packet containing Epsom Salts, telling her to take these. This was useless and Eliza’s condition continued to deteriorate until she died at around 3:30am on Friday 22nd July. The cause of death was attributed to inflammation of the uterus, most likely caused by the medical instruments Linfield had used. Carrying out procedures like this can be dangerous to this day, but in Victorian England, the chances of infection and complications were far greater. Infection control was non existent and surgeons who carried out a later post-mortem stated that the implements used were not suitable for the operation.

After Eliza’s death, Spencer and William Linfield, Mary Ann Dryden and Richard Orpin were arrested. They were first brought in front of magistrates at Lambeth Police Court, before appearing at the Old Bailey on 23rd October 1848. William was released but the others were indicted for the wilful murder of Eliza Wilson, by procuring her miscarriage with the use of a catheter.

The trial gave further details of the goings-on at Prior Place. Witnesses reported that, over the years, they had seen many pregnant women arrive but had not once seen any leave with a baby nor even heard a child cry. Some of these women arrived in cabs but left two weeks later, childless, with some picked up by ‘gentlemen’. The windows of the house had been designed in such a way as to deaden sound. Neighbours complained of foul smells coming from drains, found to be caused by the ‘decomposition of some putrid matter’. This implied that Linfield may have been disposing of aborted foetuses by irregular means, with one neighbour inferring that Linfield kept a pig in her back yard for this purpose.

Police officers checked logbooks and discovered that since 1847, at least 7 bodies of newly born children had been found in the streets surrounding Linfield’s house. A local grave digger had told police that he had frequently buried stillborn

children brought to him by Dryden. Their death certificates had been signed by Linfield.

Anonymous claims had been made to police Superintendent Robinson that Linfield had been involved in the deaths of two other women, one a servant from St. Georges, Southwark and another who had died due to drugs administered by Linfield. While no doubt, many women who performed abortions within their own communities did so in a genuine desire to improve the lot of their fellow women, Spencer Linfield appeared to have made a career out of these women’s misfortunes and was running a highly organised, profitable but illegal business from her home in Walworth.

Linfield had been born around 1791. A certificate produced at the trial suggested that she may have had some degree of medical training. It read, ‘This is to certify that Mrs. Spencer Lind-field has diligently attended a course of my lectures on midwifery, and the diseases of women and children; and practised the same under my inspection. 24th May1821.

Trade directories of 1835 and 1840 record her as a dentist trading from 24 East Street, Walworth, but an 1845 directory, recorded her as a midwife.

(Note: Documents relating to this case use both East Lane and East Street). Though it is historically problematic to accuse someone from the past of wrongdoing, without having the whole story, circumstantial evidence points to the fact that Linfield’s and Dryden’s activities in Walworth had a very sinister and dark side.

At the Old Bailey trial, Orpin had admitted going out with Eliza but argued that anything she had taken she had done herself. Linfield and Dryden had said they

had only given Eliza simple medicines to help her. A surgeon conceded that any internal damage caused by Linfield could have been accidental. As it was difficult to conclusively prove that Eliza had been unlawfully killed, the jury found all three not guilty. However, before they were released, the judge admonished the two women, saying ‘that it was clear that they had been in the habit of giving medical advice under very critical and suspicious circumstances’, also giving a stern warning that, if they were appear before him again, they would feel the full force of the law. Poor Eliza was buried on 26th September at St. Luke’s, West Norwood.

So it feels a touch fated that the National Theatre’s production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, set in Sicily, should open on this hottest of weeks, writes Christopher Peacock...

Director Simon Godwin’s production locates the show in early 20th century Sicily at the Hotel Messina. The action begins with the local army returning from a victorious battle and are hosted by Antonia and Leonato at their family-run hotel. The soldiers’ return sparks love in the air between their daughter Hero and a young soldier, Claudio. Meanwhile, Leonato and Antonia’s niece Beatrice re-ignites her teasing of another of the soldiers, Benedick. What follows is a host of gossiping and hearsay where the likes of General Don Pedro play matchmaker whilst his illegitimate brother Don John only takes joy from being a heartbreaker.

The setting in the hotel creates plenty of scope for farcical humour with multiple entrances and exits and ultimately plenty of places for people to hide and eavesdrop.

Kicking off with an exclusive look at the company’s latest work, Contemporary Dance 2.0, a rare screening of Clowns,

but also beautifully assisting the comedy so much so that the hotel feels like a character in its own right. Astute direction from Godwin and the cast’s interaction with the set design work wonders for this story of miscommunication and what has been noted or not.

David Flynn fulfils the clown role of Dogberry with aplomb. Freed in styling and forgiven for any upstaging, all of his scenes drew laughter from the audience and these scenes that can feel like interludes are executed well. John Heffernan as Benedick is possibly the brightest performance in a cast that feels more of an ensemble.

Eben Figueiredo’s Claudio is played more urban youth than Italian soldier, however, the cadence and flow of his modern inner-city London tongue work neatly with the Shakespearean verse and his performance also has heart and earnestness.

It comes as no surprise that Godwin has directed Shakespeare throughout his career. His experience guides the cast and gives them the confidence to take risks and chances that pay off in entertainment for the most part. The set pieces are all handled well but some of the romance fails to convince. This is most likely down to casting choices and decisions to focus more on easy laughs rather than chemistry.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable various works to be carried out, it made, an order, the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Dockley Road, outside No’s 1-16 Eldridge Court (that lies between Rouel Road to Railway bridge, (eastwards) (b) Gaza Street, at it’s junction with Braganza Street to it’s blocked end (c) Melior Street, at it’s junction with Weston Street for 25m east. (d) Park Street, suspension of cycle lane, (easterly) between Redcross Way and Stoney Street (e) Weston Street will be made one way from St Thomas Street to Melior Street (no entry northbound).

The alternative route for affected traffic: (2a) Dockley Road, St James Road, Jamaica Road, Abbey Street, Enid Street, Rouel Road (2b) not applicable (2c) not applicable. (2d) not applicable

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The works will be in operation for (2a) 8th – 12th August (2b) 8th – 12th August (2c) 5th August – 20th November. (2d) 4th – 12th August.

sport@southwarknews.co.uk ALICE DAVIDSONRichards produced a brilliant all-round performance to inspire South East Stars to a 36-run victory over Western Storm in an entertaining Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy encounter at Cheltenham last weekend.

Davidson-Richards made 50 with the bat and then weighed in with 4-33 with the ball to ensure Stars maintain their pursuit of frontrunners Southern Vipers and Northern Diamonds.

Chloe Brewer top-scored with 61 and Rhianna Southby hit 54 as Stars posted a formidable 283-8 after winning the toss, while off spinner Chloe Skelton took competition-best figures of 5-54 to keep Storm in the hunt.

Sophie Luff and Alex Griffiths made a decent fist of chasing, scoring 95 and 48 respectively in staging a stand of 102 for the second wicket, but DavidsonRichards took key wickets and Alexa Stonehouse returned figures of 3-27 as Storm were dismissed for 247 in 48 overs, Stars holding their nerve to see the game out with something to spare.

Stars batter Brewer said: “If the ball’s there to hit, I hit it.

That’s the way I always like to play and it came off for me today. This is the first time I’ve played at Cheltenham and I loved it. The slope takes some getting used to, but I was pleased I was able to get the team off to such a good start.

“Alice Davidson-Richards played really well and Rhianna Southby made her first ever 50, so we were able to keep the momentum going throughout the innings. We knew 283 was a good score, but we still had to keep our discipline and work hard in the field.

“There was always a danger that things could go wrong while Sophie Luff was there.

She played so well and it really hard to get out. I think her dismissal was a big turning point. Alice bowled really well in the middle overs and at the death and she has gained so much confidence playing for England.

“We all know Alexa is talented, and she showed that again today, taking crucial wickets at the top and at the death.”

Leaders in control at Kia Oval OLLIE POPE’s sparkling 65, and a determined ninth wicket stand of 72 between Conor McKerr and Jamie Overton, edged Surrey ahead of Warwickshire at the midway point of a hard-fought LV= Insurance County Championship contest at the Kia Oval, writes Mark Baldwin

Pope, who faced only 73 balls and hit two sixes and nine fours, scored the only half-century of the match so far, while McKerr and Overton’s heroics enabled Surrey to reply with 316 to Warwickshire’s 253. In two overs’ batting before stumps, Warwickshire reached 1 without loss in their second innings, reducing their overall deficit to 62.

Fast bowler McKerr, called up only as a late replacement for Dan Worrall, who suffered a shoulder injury in the warmups before the game, scored an assured career-best 37 in two hours’ resistance.

And Overton, batting down at No10 because of a damaged right hand, contributed an equally responsible 38 to earn Division One leaders Surrey a precious third batting bonus point as well as a handy first innings lead.

Just after McKerr’s dismissal, lbw on the back foot to slow left-armer Danny Briggs, and before he was last out, pulling Ollie Hannon-Dalby to deep mid wicket, Overton was struck a painful blow on the same hand by Liam Norwell but, after on-field treatment, he batted bravely on. Hannon-Dalby finished with 3-44, taking his season’s championship wicket-tally to 46.

In contrast to Warwickshire’s first innings, Surrey’s reply was always more aggressive in intent with Ryan Patel setting the tone almost immediately by taking three successive fours off Norwell’s opening over.

Two magnificent extra cover driven boundaries were followed by another

four to square leg but then, from the very next ball, Patel’s attempt to hit a near long hop through square cover was undone when the ball hit the toe-end of his bat and looped up almost comically to Nathan McAndrew at cover, who ran in to take the easiest of catches.

Patel departed in understandably high dudgeon and when Hashim Amla was leg-before to the probing HannonDalby for 9 in the ninth over Surrey were in early bother at 25 for 2.

Opener Rory Burns’ reaction, now in partnership with Pope, was to counterattack and the pair had added 47 in six overs when, shortly before lunch, Burns was adjudged lbw to McAndrew for 27.

Frankie Brown took 40 balls to score 10, and Schofield, having needed just 67 balls to complete his third fifty of the season, took another 31 to score his next ten runs before being dismissed for 60 off 98. The rest of the innings was held together by skipper Chris Purshouse, who reached his third half-century of the campaign, and the second against these opponents, while wickets tumbled at the other end. On paper Dulwich had a strong lower order, but none of the last six scored more than 13. Grant rotated his three spinners for the rest of the innings,

and they each finished with three wickets. Dulwich were dismissed for 224 in the 62nd over, leaving Spencer 60 overs to get the runs. Purshouse was the last man out, having made 66 off 91 balls.

by Simon Harwood and Dan Crowley, with both openers falling to Harwood to make it 34-2 in the 13th over. The fifty did not come up until the 18th, but the Dulwich spinners were not allowed to dominate as their opponents had. Hugo Darby and Will Harris had added 72 in 15.3 overs for the third wicket when Crowley returned to dismiss Darby for 37 off 44 balls. Harris was joined by Tim Young to add 77 in 17.3 overs for the fourth wicket.

by Ben Foakes in a stand of 55 in 15 overs that continued to take the attack to Warwickshire.

Hannon-Dalby, though, impressed in a lengthy spell from the Vauxhall End and, in his 13th over and the 30th of the innings, his perseverance paid off when an off-cutter pinned Foakes plumb lbw for a well-made 31.

Will Jacks was away quickly with a flicked four to long leg against Hannon-Dalby and Pope went to the game’s first half-century with a superb square driven four off Norwell. Jacks then whipped Will Rhodes’ medium pace twice wide of mid on for further boundaries.

Pope, however, had just pulled Wheal for six when, attempting to repeat the stroke next ball, skied for Alex Davies to take the catch running in from deep square leg.

He and Jacks had added 46 in eight overs and another 39 in seven came from Jacks’ subsequent alliance with Jordan Clark, who offered some thumping strokes of his own until McAndrew bowled him for 28 with an excellent ball that removed off stump.

By then Jacks had also gone, for a bright 51-ball 44, caught behind off McAndrew, but Surrey’s middle order had scored 164 in 36 afternoon overs and, after tea, the tail added another 73 thanks largely to McKerr and Overton.

Tom Lawes, caught at second slip off Norwell for 12, had enjoyed a remarkable escape just before the interval when he was beaten by a ball from McAndrew which clipped the outside of the off stump so hard that it deflected away past diving keeper Michael Burgess for four byes. The bails, though, did not budge!

Day two had begun with Warwickshire, on 240 for 8 overnight, losing their last two wickets for the addition of only 13 runs. McAndrew, who resumed on 40, at least made sure of a third batting bonus point before he sparred at a ball from Kemar Roach, berating himself for edging a catch to Pope at second slip.

And Lawes, replacing Roach, struck with his fourth ball to bowl Norwell with a perfect inswinger that plucked out middle stump. It gave Lawes figures of 3 for 38 from 20.4 overs, and the teenager was the pick of Surrey’s attack throughout the innings in just his fifth first-class appearance.

Dulwich fail to sustain good start as Spencer claim win Spencer 228-6 (56.2) beat Dulwich 224 (61.2) by 4 wickets

By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH COULD not sustain an impressive start in their AJ Fordham Surrey Championship Division 1 match at Spencer last weekend, going down to defeat by four wickets.

Dulwich elected to bat and got off to a flying start as Ollie Steele and James Schofield put 50 on the board in just eight overs. But the spin of skipper Gus Grant slowed the rate and they had reached 66 in the 13th over when Steele fell to the pace of Michael Snedden for 31, off 35 balls.

Snedden gave way to 16 year old slow

for 35, off 53 balls, and Crowley dismissed Horler for 7 to make it 191-5, but the score had progressed to 213 before Khan took the sixth wicket, dismissing Harris for 89, off 128 balls. Spencer reached their target with 3.4 overs to spare.

Crowley was once again the pick of the bowlers with 2-47 off 16 overs, while Khan took 2-73 off 16 and Harwood 2-42 off ten.

Dulwich take just four points from this match and remain in ninth place, but the gap behind eighth place has widened to 23 points.

This weekend, they have a home fixture against Valley End who are currently fifth. The first match between the sides gave Dulwich their only win to date, and they will be looking to replicate it in the return match.

Many teams have had awful preseason campaigns but have gone on to achieve incredible things in the same season, while others have done the exact opposite. The general rule is that friendlies shouldn’t be taken too seriously, however, as competitive matches are totally different.

Regardless of that fact, it’s hard not to be a little bit worried by Millwall’s second-half performance against

Ipswich Town. It came off the back of an impressive 45 minutes for the Lions, one of which might be considered their best half of pre-season, in fact.

After a bright start, Benik Afobe gave the hosts the lead after just 15 minutes.

Gary Rowett’s side had struggled to penetrate the Ipswich back line with long balls, ultimately opting to press their centre-backs when playing out from the back instead. This allowed the energetic George Honeyman to steal the ball from Luke Woolfenden in order to set up Afobe for the opening goal.

It was something that we haven’t seen Millwall do too much of in recent seasons, and it almost gave them a second goal later in the first half. The Tractor Boys looked lethargic, albeit that they managed to forge a few chances of their own as time wore on.

The half-time break seemed to come at a good time for the hosts, but the reality is that it derailed all of their momentum.

It also gave Kieran McKenna’s side some time to figure out how to break down the Lions’ back line, which they did shortly after the restart.

Ryan Leonard lost out on a 50-50 challenge against Town skipper Sam Morsy, allowing him to prod Freddie Ladapo clean through on goal. The former Rotherham man somehow found acres of space in between Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper, allowing him to coolly slot past Bartosz Białkowski after 54 minutes.

It was the former Ipswich ‘keeper that kept Millwall in the game at all, as Ipswich flooded forward in the final third of the match. Ladapo went close to doubling his lead before his shot was blocked by Murray Wallace, while Białkowski had to deny Marcus Harness and the rest of the Tractor Boys’ attack at regular intervals in the dying stages.

Zian Flemming started his second match at The Den forcing Rowett’s late substitutes to feed off scraps after coming off the bench. The final blow would’ve been a late Ipswich winner, which almost came when Sone Aluko’s 25-yard curling effort smacked the crossbar seconds before the fulltime whistle.

A handful of boos could be detected in the home end as it was blown, which was understandable given Millwall’s secondhalf display. Rowett was displeased with what he saw, but has urged fans to remain calm, which most largely have in the aftermath of the draw.

It does highlight where the Lions need to improve before the visit of Stoke next weekend, and perhaps they’ll be better off for getting such a performance

Benik Afobe will be hoping to score against his former side

Stoke City will be the first visitors to The Den this season as the Championship gets underway on Saturday afternoon. The match sees Rowett facing his former side, having managed the Potters from May 2018 to January 2019.

He isn’t the only link between the two clubs, however, as striker Benik Afobe played for Stoke before making his move to South Bermondsey a permanent one earlier in the summer transfer window.

In truth, neither left Staffordshire on particularly good terms, which may be

an added layer for when the sides meet this weekend.

On the pitch, there’s a very different mood in the two camps. The Lions are buoyed by a positive transfer window and a string of impressive performances in pre-season, while Michael O’Neill’s side haven’t been quite as sharp in pre-season. This has led to the Potters’ boss openly telling local media outlets that he was concerned ahead of the upcoming Championship curtain-raiser.

Perhaps this is to be expected, or can even be considered mindgames. After all, Stoke have failed to finish higher than 14th since suffering relegation from the Premier League in 2018. The mood at the Bet365 Stadium has dampened significantly in recent years, with many supporters starting to feel disillusioned with how the club has been run.

Rowett hasn’t been quite as pessimistic with his outlook, however, although he admitted that his side had areas to work on after a disappointing display in the second half of their 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town. The Lions were second best all over the pitch after the break and were unlucky not to lose their last friendly match of pre-season.

The positive is that almost everyone is fit and raring to go ahead of the new season. The only exception is Isaac Olaofe, who missed the match against the Tractor Boys with a tight hamstring.

Otherwise, Rowett has a full squad to choose from, which may create some selection headaches after a strong summer of recruitment. The Millwall boss will need to make a decision on whether or not record-signing Zian Flemming is ready to make his

alexJ@southwarknews.co.uk BARTOSZ BIAŁKOWSKI is about to head into his fourth full season at Millwall.

The goalkeeper has been a crucial player for the Lions since initially joining on loan in July 2019, playing 138 Championship games for one of the best defensive sides in the division.

Of course, much of the credit goes to the centre-backs that play in front of him, but Białkowski’s shot-stopping has been an incredible asset for a club that thrives on keeping clean sheets.

“To be successful, you need to have a solid base at the back,” he told the News.

“Obviously, it’s important to have good attackers scoring goals, but to have that base at the back is massive, and it’ll be massive again this season.

“We’ve been solid for the last three years I would say, since I joined the club. That’s the main thing. The Championship is such a competitive league, and if we don’t concede any goals during games, it gives us a good base to go and win them.”

With that defensive record comes high expectations, and fans are optimistic that Millwall can finally bridge the gap to the top six after finishing just six points off the playoff places last season. Białkowski echoes that sentiment, and believes that the Lions are now ready to take that next step.

“For the last few years, we’ve tried to compete against everyone. Obviously, we’ve missed out on the play-offs a couple of times, but we’ve added really good players with quality, so I don’t see why we can’t do it.

“We all want to be successful and we all want to achieve something great. Hopefully, we can push on this year and be a challenging team.”

As the former Polish international mentions, Millwall’s summer recruitment has played a huge part in the increased expectations for the upcoming campaign. The Lions have signed five players before the opening day of the season and paid a club-record transfer fee to bring Zian Flemming to The Den earlier in the transfer window “We’ve got really high ambitions and signed a few decent players for this level. It all makes for an overwhelmingly positive environment in South Bermondsey, which is one that Białkowski wants to be a part of.

While his contract is due to expire at the end of the 2022-23 campaign, he’s keen to remain at the club if they

offer him the chance to stay.

“I’m happy to stay here. I’m enjoying my football and I enjoy playing. I’ve got a good relationship with all the players, staff, the fans, and with everyone at the club. If they decide that they want to extend my contract and speak to me or my agent then I’d be more than happy to do that.”

Centre-back set for EFL loan

alexJ@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL DEFENDER Alex Mitchell is set to join a League One or League Two club before the start of the new EFL season.

Mitchell, 20, has made just one competitive appearance for the Lions, playing in a 3-1 win against Cambridge United in last season’s Carabao Cup. He’s yet to feature in the Championship, with the bulk of his experience coming further down the football pyramid.

The centre-back spent the end of the 2020-21 campaign at National League side Bromley before moving up to League Two with Leyton Orient the following season.

During his loan spell at Brisbane Road, he played 30 matches as the O’s secured a thirteenth-place finish in the fourth tier.

Gary Rowett has confirmed that Mitchell will once again leave the Den on loan this season, with a League One and League Two club vying for his signature before the season starts on Saturday.

The Millwall boss added that the preferred option would be for him to make the step up to the third tier, but that nothing had been finalised in terms of a decision.

The arrival of Charlie Cresswell on loan from Leeds United has pushed Mitchell further down the pecking order, with the firstteam squad now containing four centre-backs. The likes of George Evans and Ryan Leonard are also able to cover in defence, giving Rowett extensive depth in the back line.

2022/23 season preview WITH THE new Championship season about to get underway, fans up and down the country are starting to make their predictions for the upcoming campaign.

Of course, that’s always easier said than done.

Who would’ve predicted that Huddersfield Town would have reached the play-off final? Or that West Brom would miss out on the top six entirely? There’s a reason why it’s called the most unpredictable league in the world.

BIRMINGHAM

Promotion: 28/1 Relegation: 7/4 Last season: 20th Manager: John Eustace Key signing: Przemysław Płacheta - on loan from Norwich City, the winger has a point to prove and will be determined to make Poland’s squad for the 2022 World Cup. Key departure: Jérémie Bela - the Angolan international was a popular figure at St Andrews, but left at the end of last season after playing 31 Championship games.

Verdict: The Blues only avoided relegation due to other clubs receiving points deduction and are in a state of turmoil amidst a takeover that will likely drag on into the start of the season. Head coach John Eustace is in his first EFL managerial job and will be under a lot of pressure if they struggle.

Prediction: 23rd

BLACKBURN

Promotion: 8/1 Relegation: 7/1 Last season: 8th Manager: Jon Dahl Tomasson Key signing: Ethan Walker - at the time of writing, the former Preston winger is Blackburn’s only signing of the summer transfer window.

Key departure: Joe Rothwell - the midfielder has worked his way up the EFL after turning down a new contract at Manchester United and is now back in the Premier League with AFC Bournemouth.

Verdict: Blackburn’s success will likely hinge on whether or not they can keep Ben Brereton Díaz at the club amidst rumours of a move to Sevilla. New manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has a strong squad at his disposal, but might face an uphill battle to replicate last season’s impressive finish.

Prediction: 15th

BLACKPOOL

Promotion: 16/1 Relegation: 7/2 Last season: 16th Manager: Michael Appleton Key signing: Rhys Williams - the Liverpool centre-back moved to Bloomfield Road on loan after making a number of Premier League appearances in 2020/21.

Key departure: Ethan Robson - the midfielder is the most experienced player to leave Blackpool this summer and has since rejoined MK Dons on a permanent deal.

Verdict: Second season syndrome could strike Blackpool, especially following the departure of manager Neil Critchley. Michael Appleton has replaced him on the back of a terrible campaign at Lincoln City, with many fans unconvinced that he’s the right man for the job.

Prediction: 20th

BRISTOL CITY

Promotion: 16/1 Relegation: 10/3 Last season: 17th Manager: Nigel Pearson Key signing: Kal Naismith - a crucial player for Luton Town as they secured a top six finish, the defender will be hoping to tighten up Bristol City’s leaky back line.

Key departure: Callum O’Dowda - the winger was released by the Robins last season and has gone on to join Championship rivals Cardiff City.

Verdict: Bristol City’s task is simple - to fix their defensive issues while maintaining their attacking strength. So far, Nigel Pearson has managed to keep his star forwards and will be keen to add some extra centre-backs before the start of the campaign. If they can do that, a top-half finish is certainly achievable.

Prediction: 13th

Burnley

Promotion: 7/2 Relegation: 14/1 Last season: 18th in the Premier League (relegated) Manager: Vincent Kompany Key signing: Josh Cullen - turned down the chance to play Europa Conference League football with Anderlecht in order to follow Vincent Kompany to Turf Moor.

Key departure: Ben Mee - a number of crucial players have left Burnley this summer, but losing their club captain will surely hurt the most.

Verdict: Replacing Sean Dyche after a near ten-year stint at the club will be incredibly tough for Kompany, especially with the Clarets losing so many key players over the summer. However, they’ve signed some very capable replacements and will surely challenge for an immediate return to the top flight.

Prediction: 3rd

CARDIFF CITY

Promotion: 11/1 Relegation: 13/2 Last season: 18th Manager: Steve Morison Key signing: Andy Rinomhota - the defensive midfielder played a crucial part in keeping Reading in the Championship last season.

Key departure: Will Vaulks - 105 appearances across three Championship seasons shows how important he’s been for Cardiff, leaving for Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the summer.

Verdict: Former Millwall striker Steve Morison heads into his first full season as a manager after a summer of change in South Wales. If the Bluebirds are unable to bed in all their new signings before the start of the campaign, they might struggle under a fairly inexperienced head coach.

Prediction: 18th

COVENTRY CITY

Promotion: 9/1 Relegation: 9/1 Last season: 12th Manager: Mark Robins Key signing: Callum Doyle - after helping Sunderland win promotion from League One, the young centre-back will have the chance to play Championship football on loan from Manchester City.

Key departure: Jordan Shipley - joined Shrewsbury Town on a free transfer after six years in the West Midlands.

Verdict: Coventry’s progress in the last three seasons has been well documented, but bridging the gap to the top six might be too difficult without significant investment. Losing star midfielder Callum O’Hare, who’s been linked with a move to Burnley, would be a huge blow for Robins’ side.

Prediction: 11th

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

Promotion: 8/1 Relegation: 6/1 Last season: 3rd Manager: Danny Schofield Key signing: Jack Rudoni - linked with a host of Championship clubs, the Terriers won the race to sign AFC Wimbledon’s talented young attacking midfielder.

Key departure: Lewis O’Brien - having lost to Nottingham Forest in the playoff final, the Reds added insult to injury by signing Huddersfield’s best player ahead of their Premier League return.

Verdict: It’s been a torrid summer for Huddersfield, starting with the resignation of manager Carlos Corberán and worsened by the recent departures of O’Brien and Harry Toffolo. While the Terriers have recruited fairly well this summer, it’s hard to see them replicating last season’s impressive campaign without the core of that squad.

Prediction: 19th

The three relegated Premier League sides will obviously be amongst the favourites to secure promotion to the Premier League, while the likes of Middlesbrough, Swansea and Millwall have also caught the eyes of supporters and pundits alike.

What surprises could the Championship spring on us this season? Here’s how we think the 24 teams will fare over the next nine months.

HULL CITY

Promotion: 11/1 Relegation: 5/1 Last season: 19th Manager: Shota Arveladze Key signing: Jean Michaël Seri - the defensive midfielder played 33 games for Fulham as they stormed to the Championship title last season, but he’s opted to remain in the second tier after leaving the Cottagers.

Key departure: Keane Lewis-Potter - Hull’s talented young winger earned a £20 million move to Brentford after making 110 appearances for the Tigers.

Verdict: A season of transition will probably await the Championship’s newest big spenders after their takeover by Acun Ilıcalı was confirmed. Despite losing their best player this summer, expect Hull to improve on last season’s disappointing 19th place finish, helped by a handful of top-quality additions.

Prediction: 12th

LUTON TOWN

Promotion: 8/1 Relegation: 8/1 Last season: 6th Manager: Nathan Jones Key signing: Carlton Morris - the powerful striker should thrive at Luton after scoring seven goals for relegated Barnsley last season.

Key departure: Kal Naismith - losing such a crucial member of their back three to a Championship rival will certainly hurt the Hatters, especially on a free transfer.

Verdict: Nathan Jones has led Luton on a path of continuous improvement since their promotion from League One in 2018. However, building on last season’s top six finish will be difficult in what will likely be a much harder division this year.

Prediction: 9th

MIDDLESBROUGH

Promotion: 9/4 Relegation: 33/1 Last season: 7th Manager: Chris Wilder Key signing: Darragh Lenihan - Wilder’s success at Sheffield United came through using overlapping centre-backs, and Lenihan should slot perfectly into his back line after ten years at Blackburn Rovers.

Key departure: Djed Spence - the right wing-back was seen as surplus to requirements at Middlesbrough, but he impressed out on loan at Nottingham Forest before joining Tottenham Hotspur for a reported fee of £20 million.

Verdict: Wilder has three EFL promotions on his CV so far and fans will expect him to add a fourth next season. However, Boro’s squad is still incredibly thin and a lot of work needs to be done if they are to challenge for a place in the Premier League. At the moment, it’s hard to see them improving on last season.

Prediction: 7th

MILLWALL

Promotion: 15/2 Relegation: 9/1 Last season: 9th Manager: Gary Rowett Key signing: Zian Flemming - the Lions broke their transfer record to bring the Dutchman to The Den and he’ll be expected to hit the ground running after an impressive stint at Fortuna Sittard.

Key departure: Jed Wallace - it felt inevitable, but losing one of the best players in the league on a free transfer to Championship rivals West Brom has left a bitter taste in the mouths of Millwall fans.

Verdict: Like many of the teams who narrowly missed out on the playoffs last season, it’s going to be incredibly difficult for Millwall to climb into the top six.

However, the Lions have an experienced manager and have made a lot of exciting signings, which might just be enough for them to take that next step.

Prediction: 6th

Norwich City

Promotion: 13/8 Relegation: 50/1 Last season: 20th in the Premier League (relegated) Manager: Dean Smith Key signing: Isaac Hayden - the defensive midfielder has extensive Premier League experience and a promotion from the Championship on his CV. Key departure: Lukas Rupp - a bit-part player during his time at Carrow Road, the German became a fan favourite before returning to Germany at the end of his contract.

Verdict: The Canaries are England’s perennial yo-yo club, but it’s tough to predict whether they’ll be able to add a third Championship title in five seasons after another devastating Premier League campaign. This time, they’ll have to do it without Daniel Farke, but it’s hard to ignore the fact that they’ve kept much of their squad together so far, including Teemu Pukki.

Prediction: 1st

PRESTON NORTH END

Promotion: 11/1 Relegation: 8/1 Last season: 13th Manager: Ryan Lowe Key signing: Robbie Brady - a Republic of Ireland international with extensive Championship experience, Preston will have a great player on their hands if they can keep the winger fit.

Key departure: Tom Barkhuizen - made nearly 200 appearances for the Lilywhites before his release, joining League One outfit Derby County.

Verdict: Preston might not have eyes on the playoff places just yet, but a top-half finish will certainly be the aim for Lowe’s side. Their work in the transfer window has been good, but there’s certainly room for improvement. It might not be enough for them to build on last season as things stand.

Prediction: 17th

QPR

Promotion: 9/1 Relegation: 9/1 Last season: 11th Manager: Michael Beale Key signing: Tyler Roberts - on loan from Leeds United, the Welshman has a promotion from the Championship to his name and will be hoping for some more game time in West London.

Key departure: Yoann Barbet - the former Brentford defender played 40 Championship games for the Rs last season but couldn’t agree a new deal to remain at the club.

Verdict: QPR’s decision to part ways with Mark Warburton will be seen in one of two ways, and it depends on how his replacement fares next season. Beale is entering his first senior management job and will be tasked with achieving a top six finish, but it might be a bridge too far in his first campaign.

Prediction: 14th

READING

Promotion: 33/1 Relegation: 13/8 Last season: 21st Manager: Paul Ince Key signing: Jeff Hendrick - his loan spell at QPR might not have worked out, but his vast experience will surely help the Royals in what could be an incredibly tough season.

Key departure: John Swift - given their current financial situation, Reading will be devastated to lose their best player on a free transfer.

Verdict: Reading are the only club in the EFL who are still under an embargo for breaching profit and sustainability rules. As a result, the Royals are limited in who they can sign this summer and supporters are fearing the worst. They narrowly avoided relegation last season, but it’s tough to see them staying up this year.

Prediction: 24th

ROTHERHAM UNITED

Promotion: 40/1 Relegation: 13/8 Last season: 2nd in League One (promoted) Manager: Paul Warne Key signing: Peter Kioso - the Irishman will likely become Rotherham’s starting right wing-back in order to allow Chiedozie Ogbene to play further up the pitch.

Key departure: Michael Smith - the Millers’ top scorer last season, Smith opted to stay in League One by joining arch-rivals Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer.

Verdict: Rotherham just haven’t been able to stay in the Championship, suffering three relegations to League One since 2017. The Millers now find themselves back in the second tier, but having lost a lot of key players from their

promotion-winning season, it’s hard to see them avoiding the drop.

Prediction: 22nd

SHEFFIELD UNITED

Promotion: 3/1 Relegation: 33/1 Last season: 5th Manager: Paul Heckingbottom Key signing: Anel Ahmedhodžić - a Bosnia and Herzegovina international, the defender has two Swedish Allsvenskan titles to his name.

Key departure: David McGoldrick - the Blades lacked forward options towards the back end of last season and have now lost one of their most experienced strikers to Derby County.

Verdict: Heckingbottom guided his side to the playoffs last season after a disastrous start to the campaign under manager Slaviša Jokanović, but their summer transfer business hasn’t filled fans with confidence that they can repeat that in 2022/23. If they are to challenge, they’ll need to strengthen in attack as soon as possible.

Prediction: 8th

STOKE CITY

Promotion: 7/1 Relegation: 11/1 Last season: 14th Manager: Michael O’Neill Key signing: Josh Laurent - one of a handful of players to leave Reading for free this summer, the defensive midfielder should thrive at the Bet365 Stadium.

Key departure: Alfie Doughty - while he couldn’t nail down a place in the starting lineup, Luton Town were happy to take the defender off Stoke’s hands early in the transfer window.

Verdict: Stoke have stagnated since their relegation from the Premier League in 2018, and it’s hard to see that changing any time soon. The Potters have failed to secure a top-half finish in any of their last four Championship seasons, and fans aren’t optimistic ahead of the upcoming campaign despite being fairly active in the transfer market.

Prediction: 16th

SUNDERLAND

Promotion: 13/2 Relegation: 15/2 Last season: 5th in League One (promoted via the play-offs) Manager: Alex Neil Key signing: Daniel Ballard - impressed on loan at Millwall last season but needed to leave Arsenal permanently, allowing Sunderland to pick him up for an undisclosed fee this summer.

Key departure: Aiden McGeady - the winger spent six seasons at the Stadium of Light, leaving for Hibernian after helping the Black Cats win promotion from League One. Verdict: Sunderland will have the highest expectations of the three newly-promoted sides because of the size of the club and their budget.

Consecutive promotions may be a bit too optimistic for the Black Cats, but supporters are hopeful that they can challenge for the playoffs in their first season back in the Championship.

Prediction: 10th

SWANSEA CITY

Promotion: 9/2 Relegation: 14/1 Last season: 15th Manager: Russell Martin Key signing: Harry Darling - one of MK Dons’ star players as they narrowly missed out on automatic promotion from League One, the centre-back joins up with his former manager in South Wales.

Key departure: Flynn Downes - keeping the midfielder at the Liberty Stadium proved to be too difficult for the Swans as he joined West Ham for a reported £12 million fee.

Verdict: Swansea’s project is an intriguing one, and the rewards will be huge if they can make it work. Promotion: 11/4 Relegation: 33/1 Last season: 10th Manager: Steve Bruce Key signing: Okay Yokuşlu - an important player in West Brom’s last Premier League campaign, the Turkish international is an incredible signing for a Championship side.

Key departure: Sam Johnstone - the Baggies’ first-choice goalkeeper departed for Crystal Palace on a free transfer.

Verdict: Many supporters are tipping West Brom to struggle because of manager Steve Bruce, but it can’t be forgotten that the former Newcastle United boss has four Championship promotions on his CV. The Baggies have worked incredibly well in the transfer market and could easily challenge for automatic promotion with the squad they have at the moment.

WIGAN ATHLETIC

Promotion: 14/1 Relegation: 7/2 Last season: 1st in League One (promoted) Manager: Leam Richardson Key signing: Ryan Nyambe - signing a first-choice right-back from their Championship rivals will certainly go down as one of Wigan’s best moves of the summer.

Key departure: Gavin Massey - won two promotions from League One with the Latics in a five-year spell at the DW Stadium.

Verdict: Given that Wigan were on the verge of extinction just two years ago, it’s a minor miracle that they’ve been able to bounce back to the Championship so quickly. Manager Leam Richardson won the League One Manager of the Season award but is yet to coach in the Championship, while the club have only made one signing for the first-team so far.

Prediction: 21st

Midfielder Shackleton is determined to play regular football for the first time in his career

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk JAMIE SHACKLETON is arguably Millwall’s most high-profile signing of the summer transfer window despite never having played more than 22 games in a league season for Leeds United.

The midfielder was involved in the Whites’ senior set-up for four years before opting to move to The Den on loan for the 2022-23 campaign.

The move gives Shackleton, 22, a first taste of being a starting player at a Championship football club. It’s also his first ever loan move away from Elland Road, making Gary Rowett just his third manager in senior football “It’s been just over a week now and I feel like I’ve settled in well and I’ve enjoyed the first few games,” Shackleton told the News.

“Different coaches have different styles of training and how they want to play on matchdays. We prepare ourselves through the week in a different way to what previous my managers have done.

“I hope I’ll be able to show off the

quality that I think I’ve got. I spoke to the manager before joining and I feel that the way we want to play and the position I want to take up, it suits the qualities that I believe I’ve got. I think it’s a great club and a great place to show that.

“I spoke with Jesse (Marsch) and between us we decided that the most important thing at this stage of my career is to play football, which I already had in my mind. That’s what I enjoy doing and that’s what I want to be doing non-stop. That was a key part of the decision to join.”

Another reason for joining the Lions is the opportunity to play in midfield, which is where Shackleton believes he can show his best qualities.

“But I’ve played a lot of games at right-back as well,” he adds. “It’s not something that I turn my nose up to, it’s a position that I’ve learned to play and I enjoy it. But I can influence games of football more in the middle.”

In fact, it was in that position that he faced some of his toughest opponents, naming Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford as the most difficult players that he’s played against in the top flight.

“I played a lot at right-back last year, so it was more the wingers that I had to deal with,” Shackleton explains.

He chooses Manchester City as the best team that he’s faced, admitting that Leeds “had a tough day” when they lost 7-0 at the Etihad Stadium last season. However, Shackleton agrees that he’ll be better for the experience of having played 27 matches in the top flight, even if he only played a bit-part role since winning promotion.

“It’s probably the highest level of football in the world. To have gained experience and play there is something that could help me progress and improve as a player, playing against and with some of the best players in the world.

“The four previous years I’ve been involved with Leeds, two in the Championship and two in the Premier League, I’ve been involved. But it’s been stop-start and I’ve never had a regular spot nailed down, so that’s the next step for me I think.”

Although he’s playing in a new environment, there are certainly some similarities. For starters, despite their rivalry, Millwall and Leeds have similar fanbases, something which Shackleton believes will help him transition to life at The Den. “I think both clubs have very passionate sets of fans who’s whole lives are about the football club,” he

admits.

“I think there’s nothing better than being a part of a club that’s got supporters like that, that are 100% behind that and behind the club.

Similarly, the expectations will be equally as high in South Bermondsey as they were in West Yorkshire.

Shackleton brings high standards with him to his new club, admitting that “the club should only be looking at those spots, and why not above that?”

Yet he decides against setting personal targets at this stage of his Millwall career, only aiming to play regularly and “add some more goals to my game”.

“When I’ve played in midfield, I managed to grab a couple. I want to get in a few more forward positions and hopefully contribute to the game with goals and assists.”

While on the surface, Shackleton may seem like a regular Premier League youngster looking to gain valuable experience in the Championship, there’s a number of unique aspects to his career too.

Of course, there’s his versatility and the fact that he’s able to play as a combative central midfielder despite being just 5’6. But impressively, the Leeds academy graduate has also started working towards obtaining his

UEFA B License for coaching.

“I started that up at Leeds just before Covid started, so I did a couple of months and got all the written stuff done. Now all I’ve got left to do is to put on some training sessions and get them overlooked and ticked off. I think there’s a certain amount of sessions we need ticked off.

“Since Covid, that’s been tough because ideally we would’ve used some of the younger age groups, but they’ve been separated in order to keep cases down. I just need to get those sessions ticked off and hopefully that’ll be something I can add.

“I spoke to a few of the lads who thought about coaching who said that they wished they’d done it earlier.

Obviously, with the job we’re in, there’s days where you finish early and you’ve got a tough session in the morning and the afternoon free, that was the case.

“One afternoon a week I was doing those sessions. It’s not just a bit of a pastime but also something I could see myself doing.”

While Shackleton has spent much of his career learning from the likes of Marcelo Bielsa, Jesse Marsch and now Gary Rowett, he may one day look to follow in their footsteps as a manager as well.

Millwall boss aiming for a fast start as Championship season nears EXCLUSIVE

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL boss Gary Rowett expects ‘a little bit of blood and thunder’ in the season opener against Stoke - hoping to set the tone for a strong start to the campaign.

The Lions have only won once on the opening day of the season since they were promoted from League One - a 1-0 win against Preston North End in 2019-20. Their record in the remaining four campaigns has seen them draw three and lose one.

For a side with playoff ambitions, this obviously isn’t ideal, and the Lions will be hoping to improve their opening-day luck against Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.

Gary Rowett is clearly of the same belief, telling the News that “we’ve

got our own ambitions and a good start is certainly up there with some of those.”

And while Rowett would love to see three points in the bag after this weekend’s match against Michael O’Neill’s side, he is urging his players to look at the wider picture of the campaign, rather than focusing purely on beating the Potters.

“You want to try and win every game, it’s as simple as that, but it’s not always possible. You’ve got to try and be as competitive as you can in every game, and what we tend to do is that we try to manage each match in its entirety individually and try to follow the same process to perform as well as we can.

“Regardless of the outcome of the game, we’ll review it, we’ll try to learn from it and move on to the next game. We’ve got a tough first month, I think every first month in the Championship is tough because you don’t quite know what to

expect.”

Of course, the match pits Rowett against his former club once again, having been manager of Stoke from May 2018 to January 2019.

While there’s always a level of unknowingness for any side going into the season, the Millwall boss says that he knows what to expect from their opening game of the campaign.

“Stoke are a very competitive team, they’ll be desperate to start the season well as much as we are in front of our own fans. They’ve made some good signings.

“I think it’s a typical Championship game of football. It’s a tough match to know what it’s going to be like, so therefore we have to focus on what we do and how we approach the game to do the right things.

“We saw that last season. If we do the right things more often than not then we give ourselves a fabulous chance to get a positive result.”

With that, he also has a picture of what his starting lineup for Saturday’s match might look like after finishing their pre-season preparations last weekend. Millwall won three of their five friendly matches, drawing two and losing just one.

It’s helped Rowett to shape his team for the visit of Stoke, although he confirmed that he’s yet to make a final decision on who will and won’t start at The Den this weekend.

“Of course I’ve got an idea, although I’m not sure that’s completely set in stone. It’s the first game, it’s against Stoke, I think it’ll be a little bit blood and thunder to start with because the first game is always like that.

“We’ll have a look at what we think we need in the game and what changes we think can calm the game down at certain points. That’ll become a bit clearer as the week goes on.”

Loanee Lion keen on permanent deal

The midfielder made his first start for the Lions in a pre-season friendly against Ipswich Town last weekend, playing just over an hour in his first match at The Den. Shackleton impressed manager Gary Rowett, who described him as “allenergy, full of running and full of quality.”

Soon after his loan deal was confirmed, it was revealed that the Lions retained an option to sign the 22-year-old on a permanent basis, something which the player himself is keen to explore at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

“I think it’s an exciting idea,” Shackleton told the News.

“Obviously, it all depends on how the next few months go, but in an ideal world I’d get 40 odd games under my belt and I go from there. It’ll be exciting to see where we can get to this year.”

While the allure of playing for his boyhood club in the Premier League is certainly strong, Shackleton is keen to take the Lions to the same level during his time at The Den. “For me, while I’m here, the aim is to get into one of those playoff spots. Even better, why not above that? Hopefully, we can take Millwall to the same level as Leeds and from there we can see what happens. But for the season, that’s the aim for me and the lads in the dressing room.”
