By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A newly-elected Southwark councillor is being kicked out of her home because of a dispute between her landlord and their letting agents.

Cllr Chloe Tomlinson, who was elected to represent the Rye Lane ward in May, and her housemates are being evicted after Foxtons slapped the woman who owns her Peckham home with a whopping £7,488 fee just to change estate agents.

Instead of paying this fee, on June 30 the landlord simply served her tenants a Section 21 notice - under which the tenants typically have two months to move out. Councillors have to live in the local authority area that they represent.

Foxtons said this fee was in the contract the landlord signed and that it did not make her evict Cllr Tomlinson and her housemates. The landlord did not respond to a request for comment.

Cllr Tomlinson, a primary school teacher in her day job, said: “Facing eviction is extremely distressing. Nobody wants to be forced out of their home.

“Foxtons’ behaviour is completely heartless - they could choose to waive the fee and we could remain in our home.

Instead they are trying to profit from our situation and they don’t care if we get made homeless as a result. It’s pure greed from one of London’s largest letting agents who are once again treating private renters as cannon fodder as they scramble for profit.”

“All this brings home the precarity and instability of life as a private renter. I’ve lived in over eight private-rented homes since I first moved to London as a teacher in 2014. There is never any stability or security. How are young people and private renters like me supposed to plan our lives, work in our communities, and participate in our local democracies, when we can so easily be forced out of our homes and boroughs?”

It came after the landlord first gave Cllr Tomlinson and her housemates a huge rent increase of thirteen per cent, coming to an extra £100 per month each. Cllr Tomlinson said they had accepted the rent increase despite being worried about how they would afford it - only to be told they were being evicted a few weeks later.

Both she and her local MP Harriet Harman, appealed to Foxtons to waive the fee to stop the eviction, but had no success.

The Renters Reform Bill, which would ban evictions like this one, was outlined by the government in June after a long buildup. The bill still has to go through the long process of being voted through parliament before it becomes law. It is unclear if it would stop estate agents from charging massive fees, as in this case.

A spokesperson for Foxtons said: “The contractual agreement between the landlord and Foxtons is a prearranged agreement. This was signed by the landlord, who was aware at the time that there would be a renewal fee.

As stated in our terms and conditions:

Renewal Commission will be due in respect of Renewals where the original tenant remains in occupation. Where there is more than one tenant, Renewal Commission will be payable in full where any or all of them remain in occupation.

“We did not advise the landlord to serve a section 21 notice, and we would never do so whilst negotiating a renewal, the landlord served this notice to the tenants herself. We have had multiple conversations with the landlord to try support a resolution and maintain the relationship with herself and the tenants but unfortunately we have been unable to find an amicable solution for them both.”

A stitch in time!

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey woman celebrated her 100th birthday last week with the Mayor of Southwark.

Edna Mulford had a party on July 15 at Blackfriars Settlement in Borough with friends, family - and Cllr Sunil Chopra, Southwark’s ceremonial mayor since May this year.

Edna, who was raised in Abbeyfield Road in Bermondsey and now lives in Marden Square on Drummond Road, actually reached her centenary on July 8. She also got a letter from the Queen congratulating her on the milestone.

Edna’s long life has also been varied.

Before the war, as a teenager, she was a seamstress making dresses for ladies appearing at the court - debutantes, and carried on making dresses for friends and family for a long time.

Recalling the Second World War, she

remembered seeing guns installed on the railway arches near her house. Later on in the conflict, she moved out of London and worked in a factory making radios.

There was much less demand for skilled dress-making of the kind Edna was trained for after the war, so she worked as a tin-basher and in the Peek Freans biscuit factory, among other jobs.

She married her husband Tom when she was still young, and had their daughter Janet. Sadly Tom died in the early 1960s, and Edna remained single after that. But she remained very active, and enjoyed travelling, spending time with her friends - and even snooker.

Everyone who spoke about Edna, from her daughter Janet, to her grandson Martyn, to her son-in-law Brian and TIna Johnston, who works with elderly people at Blackfriars Settlement, said how lively and funny she is. Janet said: “She just has such an active mind - she’s an amazing mother and a great person.”

Several local schools closed because of the soaring temperatures in London on Monday and Tuesday.

Three special needs schools Camberwell and Bermondsey Spa and Haymerle - closed both days. Peter Hills Primary in Rotherhithe and Brunswick Park primary in Camberwell closed for half days.

Other changes to the norm included: Fair Lawn primary on Honor Oak Road closed at 1.30pm on Monday and did not open again on Tuesday.

St Thomas the Apostle, Nunhead was open as normal on Monday and Tuesday, but parents were told it was fine to keep their children home if they were more comfortable.

Kingsdale Foundation School, West Dulwich closed on Monday before 3pm.

Compass secondary school, on Drummond Road in Bermondsey, closed at 1.45pm on Monday and Tuesday.

Bacon’s College students in Rotherhithe were at school on Monday

and Tuesday.

Fair Lawn primary school on Honor Oak Road told parents to pick up their children from 1.30pm on Monday, with temperatures reaching the high-30s.

Parents were also told that the school will be shut for the whole of Tuesday and the afterschool club had also been cancelled “due to the extreme heat”.

At Compass, after school clubs will be running for children whose parents would otherwise be disrupted. Children have also been allowed to wear their PE kits in class in recent weeks because of the heat at Compass and at Bacon’s, where some lessons were moved to more spacious rooms like the sports hall.

St Michael’s Catholic College students were at home anyway, because teachers had pre-planned INSET days on Monday and Tuesday. City of London Academy Southwark, on Lynton Road in Bermondsey was on an academic review day on Monday, so its pupils were also at home.

education warned that children should not take part in “vigorous” activities in extremely hot weather, such as this week.

Elsewhere in Southwark, the council said six of its twelve libraries - Brandon, Camberwell, Dulwich, John Harvard, Kingswood and Peckham - closed on Tuesday because of the hot weather.

The rest remained open, and the council invited anyone who needed to get out of the heat to come in and enjoy the air conditioning.

More alarmingly, there were reports of people swimming in Greenland Dock and Surrey Water in Rotherhithe, in a foolhardy bid to keep cool. Several people have died in the UK over the past couple of days after getting into trouble in the water.

It came as Londoners were advised not to travel if at all possible on Monday and Tuesday. Some Tube and train services were delayed because of the weather.

Outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday that he hoped schools, public transport and other public services could remain open as far as possible.

Due to a lack of funds, despite a paid-for pop concert being approved

leader Kieron Williams, said: “For years the free to attend Carnival has brought people of all ages and backgrounds together for a day of enjoyment and relaxation, without interfering with people’s access to their park.

“It has been especially important to those who live within the immediate area – over 64,000 people, a fifth of the borough’s population, of whom some 14,000 (2 per cent) are economically

disadvantaged...

“Reinstatement of £35,000 would cost about 54p a head of the local population, or a tiny 0.4 per cent of the Council’s overall Environment and Leisure budget of £88m. As we come out of the pandemic, giving some certainty around funding for the organisers of the muchloved Carnival makes financial and social sense.”

It comes as a two-day K-pop event is set to take place in Southwark Park on July 30-31, with the building and taking down of the set taking more than two weeks. Southwark Council said when the event was approved that paid-for events like the MIK K-pop festival are “already helping to finance Bermondsey Carnival” as well as “nine other events that celebrate a wealth of different cultures, here in Southwark.”

The Bermondsey Carnival has a history stretching back to 1900, during the second Boer War, when the Daily Telegraph launched a charitable fund to support the wives and orphans of soldiers killed in battle. The carnival was set up to raise money for this fund and soon became an annual event, before eventually petering out in the 1980s.

It was cancelled because of the pandemic in 2020, but other than that has run every year since the mid-1990s, Mr Dryden said.

He said that he would be trying to bring the carnival back in 2023, and would form a steering committee to lobby the council for more money.

The developer will now redevelop the site as offices and shops in a part-five, part-six, part-seven storey building. The project will create between 2,300 and 3,010 jobs, the company said as part of its planning application.

This is part of the multi-billion-pound Canada Water masterplan, in which British Land is building 3,500 homes in the Rotherhithe area.

British Land told the News in November last year that it “believes that culture will

play an important role as part of a new urban centre at Canada Water,” despite Printworks being set to close.

The developer added that it was in talks with Broadwick Live, who help run the venue, “as a key collaborator and tenant, following their success in the Printworks over the last five years.”

Asked for more specifics on the important role culture will play in the masterplan now that it is confirmed Printworks will go, British Land said only that they have “an incredible opportunity at Canada Water to create a vibrant neighbourhood for people to live, work and enjoy”.

Russell Dryden, who puts on the event with Phil Burkett, said he was “devastated” to have to pull the plug, but that he had to put people’s safety first.

Mr Dryden only got £10,000 from Southwark Council this year, alongside other events throughout the borough.

Last year the carnival got £35,000 for a smaller, “bitesize” version. In its heyday the council gave as much as £80,000.

Mr Dryden tried at first to get more money from local businesses and grantgiving organisations, but did not raise enough to put on the carnival safely. “We can’t let passion override people’s safety and the quality of event we put on,” he said.

Pat Kingwell, who runs the Southwark Park Association 1869, said it was “sad” that the carnival was not taking place.

He added: “It has been part of the local calendar for years, but the writing was on the wall once the Council replaced core funding with a much smaller oneoff grant. Is it realistic or fair to expect volunteers to provide the usual highquality event with about a quarter of the budget? We don’t think so.

Southwark Council court battle over overcrowded family cost £14,000

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council’s failed court battle against a statutory overcrowded family-of-four cost them £14,000.

Milton Laines Roman took the council to court after it refused to put his family on a priority housing list, even though they were crammed into a tiny Walworth flat.

The council told Mr Roman he was at fault for his family’s overcrowding and used a “deliberate act” mechanism to deny them the home they desperately needed.

Even though the council had lost a similar case in 2020, it decided to battle it out with Mr Roman in court. Once again, it lost.

The staggering court fees were revealed in Council Leader Kieron Williams’ response to a question from Lib Dem councillor Hamish McCallum at the Southwark Council Assembly, Wednesday, July 13.

The bill could stack up further because Southwark Council has to pay Mr Laines Roman legal costs, which his legal representatives are yet to submit.

Commenting, Cllr Hamish McCallum

said: “Southwark Labour love to complain about tight purse strings, but are more than happy to splash money on distressing residents that live in unsuitable conditions.

“A long-term solution to overcrowded homes is to get tough on developers and demand 50% affordable housing on all private developments.

“But I fear that in the meantime Labour will simply find other ways to cruelly make their residents’ lives more difficult in order to dissuade them from applying for higher priority social housing.”

Cllr Williams’ response also revealed that of 413 requests for band one housing priority made in 2019, the council rejected 44 on the basis of deliberate act provisions.

Mr Roman and his family have now accepted a tenancy on a new property which begun on July 4 2022.

Speaking in the wake of his court victory in June, Mr Roman said: “Southwark have constantly disbelieved me and my wife and tried to make us feel as though we were in the wrong.

“We feel so relieved that the judge has understood the situation we were in and has agreed that the council has broken the law in denying us housing.”

“At this time of financial stress, to lose a popular free community event is very unwelcome. Certainly, the high-priced and disruptive MIK-POP commercial weekend in the park will be no consolation for those on low incomes.”

A petition was launched by the local group in June to “save” the Carnival before it had been cancelled - by getting more money from Southwark.

End of era for Rotherhithe ravers Printworks to close as council approves redevelopment of site as offices

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The end of an era for Rotherhithe raving is in sight after Southwark councillors gave the go ahead for Printworks to be redeveloped as offices.

The former newspaper printing site, owned by British Land, has been a nightclub and events space for six years, but this was always meant to be a temporary use.

Despite this, Printworks has gained a global reputation over the years it has been running. About ten thousand people signed a petition calling for the club to be allowed to continue.

Printworks was named the seventh best club in the world by DJ Mag last year – and British Land’s planning application had hundreds of objections from people pointing out its reputation as one of the best venues in the capital.

Nevertheless, recommending that British Land’s application to redevelop the site be given the green light last Monday (July 11), council officers said in their report: “It is noted that a significant number of objections have been received in respect of the loss of the club/music venue currently operating on the site. It is acknowledged that this use has been very successful.

Southwark Council puts all plans to build rooftop homes on hold

By the News’ calculation, that could mean twelve schemes bringing more than 300 new homes in total have been halted.

from the council telling them that the proposals for 28 council and homes had been halted “after listening to residents’ views, and taking into consideration new building regulations and rising construction costs.”

The letter added: “We have found other ways to hit our ambitious council house building targets that cause less disruption for residents.” It comes weeks after the council got planning permission for thirteen new flats on the site of the former housing office on Abbeyfield Road.

The council is building thousands of new homes to tackle its 16,000-household waiting list. Because of space constraints and the cost of land in central London, many schemes have been on existing estates - either next to or on top of buildings where people already live.

But some residents have been concerned about plans for the rooftop homes after the serious disruption caused on Roderick House and Anthony House, next to the Abbeyfield Estate on Raymouth Road. This is a Lambeth and Southwark Housing Association development, rather than Southwark Council.

Residents in blocks earmarked for rooftop homes have also previously

expressed safety concerns, citing a report by engineers Arup that said rooftop builds on pre-1970s blocks could cause disproportionate collapse.

The council said earlier in response to those concerns that the report makes “blanket comments” and any potential site would be judged on a “case by case” basis.

About two thirds of the 137 households on the Nunhead Estate. where 27 rooftop homes had been planned, along with eighteen infill homes, wrote letters objecting to the plans earlier this year.

They were told in April that the council was reviewing the plans.

Residents campaigning against the rooftop homes welcomed the decision and said they were “looking forward to getting on with our lives without this threat hanging over us.”

The changes come two months after Southwark’s council housing portfolio changed hands, with Cllr Darren Merrill taking over from Cllr Stephanie Cryan, who moved onto finance. The council has always maintained that it takes residents’ views into account when building new homes.

According to the government, the cost

of building materials like steel, timber and concrete went up by more than 23 per cent in 2021 - a huge rise roughly equal to the previous decade of price increases.

Councillor Darren Merrill, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, said, “We have made the decision to pause our current plans to build rooftop extensions on some of our council blocks. Building homes in this way using modern construction techniques could have provided a whole suite of desperately-needed new council homes for our residents, and it is something I hope we are in a position to explore again in the future.

“We will of course continue to use all the other options we have available to us to provide new homes for our residents, including by building on our existing estates, converting garages and disused areas, and buying homes which have been developed by others.

“We will continue doing everything in our power to tackle the housing crisis locally and meet the needs of our residents. I would like to thank residents for their patience and for working with us as we explored this potential solution to the housing crisis.”

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Dozens of furious residents on Lordship Lane Estate, Dulwich, have staged a second protest against plans to build a housing block on their estate.

The council wants to demolish the garages to accommodate a five-storey block of fourteen social rent flats next to neighbouring Maxwell Court.

A consultation was held on the estate’s green on Wednesday, July 13, and bannerwaving locals took the chance to express concerns over traffic, consultation and disruption.

Lizzie Shirley, Campbell Court block resident of 28 years, said: “We’re having our lives turned upside down! We’ll have two years of building works and disruption which will cause enormous stress.”

Residents staged a similar protest back in May, but with plans edging towards approval, the banners are back out.

“How am I gonna work at home with this noise going on? It’s gonna wreak havoc”, said Leslie-Ann Julien, Maxwell Court resident of seven years.

Having erected a banner saying “NO TO INFILL”, angry tenants and leaseholders explained increased traffic was also a concern.

Clive Rates, Dulwich Village’s Tory candidate in the local elections, said LTNs had already “stacked up traffic” and

opening Fireman’s Alley to construction vehicles would bring roads to a “crawl”.

Mark Marshall, director of architectural firm Daykin Marshall Studio, was on-site explaining his plans to residents.

He said using Fireman’s Alley instead of estate roads for construction vehicles reduced congestion on the estate and would protect children from passing construction vehicles.

Marshall also said that residents’ parking would be unaffected because the new block’s tenants would not get parking permits.

However, Leon Nosworthy, estate resident and father-of-six, said people were bound to flout the parking rules.

“Without permits, there’s going to be nowhere for them to park. So they’ll park on the estate anyway, maybe even park on the verges”, he said.

Elizabeth Shirley described council consultation as a “sham”, saying residents don’t get enough notice before meetings.

She also said that the council were too reliant on digital communication because some people don’t use email.

Clive Rates said consultations should be held on weekends so working families can participate.

Architect Mark Marshall said there had been six consultation sessions - three online and three in-person.

The council needs to build 11,000 council homwes by 2043, and building on councilowned land is seen as a cost-effective way of creating new homes. The council has been approached for comment.

Council ‘leaves deaf 87-year-old widow to battle flooding home’ Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A deaf 87-year-old widow’s home floods with filthy water whenever it rains - and she says the council has done nothing about it.

Since problems began in March at Lilian Williams’ Yarnfield Square home, Clifton Estate, Peckham, six separate floods have ruined her carpet and drenched her walls.

Lillian, whose husband Mike Williams died last year, has lost one-and-a-half stone and barely sleeps due to stress.

The grandmother, an estate resident for fifty years, said: “I lost my husband last April and that was bad enough. I’m hardly sleeping at night.”

Lilian, whose mobility issues mean she needs a stairlift, often has to get up in the middle of the night to use towels to soak up flood water.

Sometimes, the “house proud” grandmother spends all night mopping up torrents of filthy water that pour into her hallway.

Worried son Nick Williams, 65, said: “She’s lost a hell of a lot of weight in the last two months and there is a noticeable deterioration in her health because she’s not sleeping out of the worry.”

He says the flooding is caused by a blocked pipe meant to transfer roof water away from the property.

Collectively, the family has exchanged dozens of emails and phone calls with the council but say they have come up against “pig-headed” and “obstinate council staff”.

Shockingly, one council worker allegedly said on the phone that “there is no evidence rainwater is harmful”.

Some council staff have said council repair services are unavailable to

leaseholders, even though council guidance says communal water pipes are always council responsibility.

The council says its “investigations to pinpoint the the source of the leak are still ongoing” even though contractors have already been in and told the family the source of the leak is the drainage pipe.

Without the support of their late-father, Nick says his mum is like a “lost child”. “He used to take care of everything - pay the bills, do the shopping and now dad is gone and she’s like a lost child”, Nick said.

He says this highlights the council’s “incompetence”.

Last year a neighbour’s 50-year-old water tank exploded. Because she had no confidence the council would help her, Lilian paid over £300 in redecorating fees herself.

Cllr Darren Merrill, Cabinet Member for Council Homes & Homelessness, said: “We understand how distressing this must be for Ms Williams and regret that our investigations to pinpoint the source of the current leak are still ongoing. We are grateful for Ms Williams and her family’s patience while we work as quickly as possible to resolve this.

“An initial leak into the bedroom was linked to an issue with a neighbouring dwelling and its balcony drainage, which we had repaired. In order to rule out all possible sources, we visited the flat above again last week. We believe the current leak into the kitchen is being caused by a fracture in the rainwater pipe so we are carrying out a CCTV survey to confirm this.”

“Once we have traced the source, we will carry out the required repairs as a matter of priority. Our buildings insurance team is aware of Ms Williams’ case and will make arrangements to carry out the remedial works inside her home once the leak has been resolved.”

EDUCATION HEAD: ‘WE DON’T WANT ANY EXCLUDED CHILDREN’

Under new plans unveiled on Monday, July 18, the council will get schools, families, social workers and other groups

to work together to keep children in the classroom.

That may be “alternative provision” like special educational needs (SEND) schools or the pupil referral unit. The council added that while they would strive for 100 per cent inclusion, they recognised that “there are rare instances where exclusion is unavoidable to safeguard children.”

The number of children being excluded in Southwark has already fallen dramatically in recent years, from 49 in 2018, to 36 in 2019, to just ten in 2020 although this was during the pandemic.

Kids in Southwark are now less likely to be excluded than elsewhere in inner London, and the UK more widely.

Roughly two per cent of kids - some 1,000 students - are also suspended

temporarily every year.

But the rate of exclusion is unequal.

Children from poorer families in Southwark - receiving free school meals - students in care, and pupils with special needs are much more likely to be excluded than students in the borough as a whole. Meanwhile students of black Caribbean heritage are about six times as likely to be excluded as white British

No opening date for the last section of Cycleway 4

Work on the Lower Road section of Cycleway 4 could start later this year, a spokesperson for the transport agency told the News - but that is dependent on TfL getting a stable funding deal from central government. Those negotiations have been rumbling on since the pandemic, after TfL’s finances were decimated by loss of fare income. The Cycleway 4 delay is another symptom of TfL funding issues, like the bus cuts currently under consultation, or the shelved Bakerloo Line extension.

Every other section of Cycleway 4 has been completed or is close to being finished: • The Tooley Street and Jamaica Road sections, running from Tower Bridge to the Rotherhithe roundabout, with a lightly segregated extension to London

children.

Education chief Cllr Jasmine Ali said she and others working on the council’s inclusion charter “find it deeply disturbing” that these children are more likely to be excluded than other groups.

She added: “Our approach on inclusion is less about ‘disruptive’ and ‘excluded’ ‘youths’ and more about how we can help vulnerable children...

“Southwark is not just a partner: it is a parent and the responsible authority.

Our duty is to protect our children.

“So we have to work hard to prevent them being excluded. We want our to stay in school, so they get the best education and a fair start in life, so they have less chance of mental health issues, less chance of ending up on drugs, in gangs or in prison, and so they are safer.”

The charter - which Southwark says is the first of its kind - has been long in the making, with Cllr Ali, schools, and other groups working on the plan since January 2020, with a pause for Covid.

The former children’s commissioner Anne Longfield, who is researching how to improve the lives of at-risk young people, welcomed the news. She said on social media: “Great to see Southwark schools sign up not to exclude pupils.

An important move for a council already committed to mental health support for all children who need it with a trailblazing drop in hub & youth support.

Showing what can be done everywhere.”

The news comes as the number of fines for children missing school also dropped dramatically in Southwark.

A Freedom of Information request by the News found that the council issued 81 fines to parents for their children not being in school in the 2018/2019 academic year, with a total value of £4,860. That dropped to just 23 in midJune of this year, Bridge, opened in September 2020 The Evelyn Street section in is set to be completed this summer • Creek Road section opened in July • The work is being funded by TfL, the agency is working with Southwark Council, who ran a consultation on traffic changes for the Lower Road section.

Catherine Rose, the council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “TfL is funding the work on the Lower Road section of Cycleway 4. However, the stranglehold that central government has over TfL’s finances, means that this funding is at risk.

Nevertheless, despite these issues TfL is still committed to delivering this with us. We are doing our best to keep these works moving, but unless the government does something we are going to run out of money soon.”

TfL’s most recent funding extension from the government came last Thursday, July 14, with the current deal rolled over for two weeks until July 28. The government said TfL had not shown it could cut £400 million from its outgoings, which is a condition of getting a long-term funding deal. TfL denied that.

Council urges pensioners to sign up to pension credit to get financial support this autumn

Pensioners may be entitled to benefits worth up to £800 this autumn, but can only receive them if they first claim pension credit.

Between 2000 and 3000 Southwark pensioners are not registered so could miss out on help with electricity bills, NHS prescriptions and more.

Evelyn Akoto, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Some people might think it’s a waste of time or it’s too much bother with forms but it will bring you up to an array of support.”

Possible financial support includes a one-off £325 Cost of Living Payments, a £150 Warm Homes Discount, free

NHS prescriptions, a £25 Cold Weather Payment and rent or mortgage support.

There is also help for those with disabilities and caring responsibilities.

Ms Akoto, Labour Councillor for Old Kent Road, said: “Older people are by far the most vulnerable - mainly because of health issues they may be facing.

“There is also loneliness and isolation, not having people to support them and not having access to information or knowing where information is.”

Last winter, she said colleagues reported many old people wearing coats indoors and she fears this could proliferate as “costs spiral out of control”.

even more summer strikes

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The rail workers union RMT has announced two more days of strike action in August, on top of the strike in late July.

The strikes on August 18 and 20, following the action on July 27, involve fourteen railway companies and Network Rail, which owns the tracks.

It comes in addition to train drivers who are members of the Aslef union going on strike on July 30.

Southeastern, the company running trains from central London through the south-east and out to Kent, is among the railway operators affected by both strikes - meaning people living in

Southwark who use the trains will face disruption.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “The rail industry and the government need to understand that this dispute will not simply vanish.

“They need to get serious about providing an offer on pay which helps deal with the cost-of-living crisis, job security for our members and provides good conditions at work.

“Recent proposals from Network Rail fell well short on pay and on safety around maintenance work.”

Both RMT and Aslef are going on strike over a pay dispute with the train companies, with unions pushing for a pay rise in line with skyrocketing inflation.

Mick Whelan, Aslef general secretary,

said: “We don’t want to go on strike – strikes are the result of a failure of negotiation – and this union, since I was elected GS in 2011, has only ever been on strike, until this year, for a handful of days.

“We don’t want to inconvenience passengers – not least because our friends and families use public transport, too, and we believe in building trust in the railways in Britain – and we don’t want to lose money by going on strike.

“But we’ve been forced into this position by the train companies, driven by the Tory government. The drivers at the companies where we are striking have had a real terms pay cut over the last three years – since April 2019...

“Strike action is, now, the only option

available but we are always open to talks if the train companies, or the government, want to talk to us and make a fair and sensible offer.”

Andrew Haines, chief executive of Network Rail, said: “By announcing even more strike dates, the RMT has dropped any pretence that this is about reaching a deal.”

It comes after RMT members went on strike for three days in late June, causing wide scale disruption to passengers.

RMT members working for the Tube also went on strike one day in June.

Police officer hospitalised after Camberwell collision

The incident took place near Camberwell Green as officers went to check out another incident. Traffic was halted as emergency service staff sorted out the incident, which took the front bumper off the other car involved, according to an eyewitness.

Transport Police said: “At 3.33pm on Thursday 14 July a British Transport Police (BTP) vehicle was involved in a road traffic collision on Camberwell New Road as officers responded to an incident. One BTP officer attended hospital for treatment to minor injuries and was discharged later that evening. Thankfully no one else was injured in the collision.”

Met Police officers also attended and said later that no one had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Removing graffiti in Bermondsey cost £150k

Network Rail, the public body that owns and manages the UK’s railway tracks, say if it can deter people from graffitiing the railways, it will have more money to spend on making sure train services are more reliable.

As part of these efforts, Network Rail executives, including chief executive Sir Peter Hendy, planted 35 trees at a notorious graffiti hotspot in Bermondey.

They planted the trees, which will serve as an obstacle to would-be vandals, at the Bermondsey Dive Under, where two railway tracks cross near Jarrow Road just south of South Bermondsey station.

Jon Ruch, Network Rail’s head of security, route crime and resilience for the Southern region, said: “Our

teams have been working incredibly hard over the past year or so to remove more graffiti, as we want to make the railway a more inviting place for our passengers.

“We spend around £750k per year on targeting graffiti hotspots and have cleared almost 700 sites since the start of the year right across the Southern region. Using trees to provide a screen that blocks taggers from repainting is a new approach, which is also fantastic news for the environment.”

Walworth set the tone for the last night of the proms

The Proms foundations were firmly established

by Jullien, a flamboyant, charismatic French conductor at Walworth’s famous Royal Surrey Zoological Gardens

The BBC Proms, regarded by some as the world’s greatest classical music festival, began last week and will culminate when the Last Night of the Proms takes place at the Royal Albert Hall on 10th September, writes Neil Crossfield...

These concerts have been running for over a hundred years, yet few will know that the foundations of the Proms were firmly established in Walworth, by a flamboyant, charismatic French conductor named Jullien. The promenade concert became a hugely fashionable feature of the pleasure gardens which flourished in London in the 18th and 19th centuries. Rather than just sitting and listening to classical music, visitors were encouraged to walk around, to ‘promenade’, looking at the other attractions while the orchestra played.

The type of music played also differed.

While overtures from the latest operas and symphonies would form part of the programme, these were interspersed with lighter pieces of music; polkas, quadrilles and other popular songs of the day. While more formal concerts aimed to develop a cultured understanding of classical music, the promenade concerts primary intention was to entertain the masses.

Adam Carse’s 1951 biography The Life of Julien, tells that his father was also a musician, who had for a time been the Popes organist. Whilst his father and heavily pregnant mother were travelling home to Paris from Rome, they narrowly avoided being buried in an avalanche, forcing them to stop in a small village called Sisteron, in the French Alps. Jullien was born there on 23 April 1823. In a show of gratitude to the village which had sheltered them, his father agreed to put on a concert for the local Philharmonic Society. Jullien was baptised in the village and his father offered to make one of the members of the society his godfather.

However, all 36 members of the group volunteered for this honour. Not wishing to cause offence, the baby took the names of all of them, being baptised Louis George Maurice Adolphe Roche Albert Abel Antonio Alexandre Noë Jean Lucien

Little wonder that in later life many people just knew him by his surname!

Ever the showman, Jullien appears to have constructed a fantastic back story about his early life. One of the stories was that as a child he was snatched by a giant eagle who was flying away with him in his talons before the eagle was shot by a passing hunter. At the age of 5 he supposedly almost starved to death trapped in the bell of a large instrument called an ophicleide. Later both he and his father served in the French Navy at the Battle of Navarino. Young Jullien then left to join the army and was nearly placed in front of a firing squad for deserting. As a grown man Jullien was involved in at

least three duels, including one in which he was nearly killed by a professional fencing teacher. Though it is sometimes difficult to separate fact from fiction, these tales all added to the mystique of the man.

Whatever the truth, it was obvious that he had some musical talent and was something of a child prodigy. His father had displayed him around Europe before he had attended the prestigious Conservatoire in Paris. Jullien had made a name for himself in the late 1830s, playing to large audiences at the Jardin turc and Casino. Yet as we shall see, Jullien’s business affairs were often chaotic and in around 1839, he left Paris with the threat of bankruptcy hanging over him. Jullien first appeared in London in 1840 where he put on highly successful concerts at Drury Lane, The English Opera House and Covent Garden.

Over the next few years his reputation grew, and his indoor promenade concerts

would become hugely popular. However, it was Jullien’s association with the Royal Surrey Zoological Gardens (RSZG) which would cement his place in the history of the proms.

The RSZG opened in Walworth in 1831.

It’s collection of animals rivalled those at the Regents Park Zoo which had opened just three years earlier, but the RSZG could also offer other entertainments for the whole family. Since 1839, it had featured musical concerts under the guidance of Charles Godfrey, a former bandmaster of the Coldstream Guards, but it was under Jullien that the venue would become famous for its promenade concerts. It is perhaps not coincidental that Jullien was enticed to come to the RSZG in 1845, the same year that a competitor, Cremorne Gardens in Chelsea had reopened with new owners. A star like Jullien would draw crowds to the RZSG, all paying a shilling to see him conduct.

His first performance at the RSZG was

on Friday 20 June 1845. This was billed as a Concert Monstre (monster concert) and around 12,000 people had attended to see Jullien conduct an orchestra of some 300 of Europe’s finest musicians.

In an age before amplification, the sheer volume of sound produced by such a large orchestra must have assaulted the senses of the large crowd, especially when it was augmented by fireworks and the addition of canon fire during the playing of the National Anthem. He was reported to be a bit of a dandy and would wear fine clothes including white kid gloves while performing.

Crowds would flock to see his dynamic, emotional and energetic conducting in which he was just as much part of the entertainment as the music. In later years he even took to using a gold and diamond encrusted baton which was delivered to him on a silver salver.

Jullien also composed music and performed this at the RSZG. These lighter pieces like his Elephant Polka and Hungarian Quadrille were hugely popular with the visitors. Punch magazine had credited Jullien with introducing the polka to England in 1844. The resulting dance craze spread widely, but it was said that Queen Victoria disapproved of this.

to include polkas in his programme throughout his professional career.

Jullien was not averse to introducing ‘novelties’ into his shows. In the summer of 1847, he engaged the services of the Harmonic Rock band. This featured Joseph Richardson’s rock harmonium, properly named a lithophone. Richardson was a self-taught musician, but his real profession was stone mason. This large instrument consisted of two banks of carefully tuned stones mounted on a frame and which was played by striking them with hammers. One of Richardson’s lithophones called the Musical Stones of Skiddaw survived and is kept in the Keswick Museum in the Lake District.

Jullien was engaged to play several summer seasons at the RSZG between 1845 and 1857. In addition to this, he would often take a large orchestra to tour the provinces and sometimes abroad.

He even travelled to New York in August 1853. During the winter he would take up

residence in London theatres to continue his promenade concerts indoors. Yet his flair for conducting was not matched by his business acumen. Putting on large concerts and using the finest musicians was expensive and he frequently lost money on his ventures. He had been declared bankrupt in 1848, after a season of opera he had promoted with Hector Berlioz failed miserably. Undeterred by these financial setbacks, in 1856, he managed to persuade many investors to support the Surrey Garden Company (Limited). After raising capital of £40,00, a spectacular concert hall capable of holding 10,000 people was built in the gardens. While at first this was successful, poor financial management meant that

by August 1857, the business was in trouble and ended up in the bankruptcy court. It was partly due to the failure of this project that hastened the demise of the RSZG. It finally closed down in 1878, with the land sold to property developers.

Jullien continued to stage his promenade concerts in London and around the provinces, giving his last London performance at the Lyceum Theatre on 18 December 1858. Exhausted, ill and with a second bankruptcy to his name he returned to France. Unfortunatley his creditors caught up with him in Paris in May1859 and he was thrown into debtor’s prison. Following his release, he experienced a mental breakdown and had been seen driving around the Boulevards of Paris exclaiming, ‘I am Jullien, the great Jullien and I’m going to give a series of grand concerts in Paris’, before producing a piccolo and playing to the bemused pedestrians. Jullien was taken to a Maison de Sante (Asylum) at Neuilly where he died on 14th March 1860, only a few days after his admission.

He was just 48 years old but had lived colourful and remarkable life.

Undoubtably Jullien’s failed projects contributed to the final demise of the RSZG, yet the owners were kind enough to hold a benefit concert for his widow on 31 July 1860. This reportedly raised the substantial sum of £1000, equating to approximately £59,000 in today’s money. Jullien’s widow must have inherited some of her late husband’s entrepreneurial spirit for on 18 August 1860, the York Herald reported that she was about to embark on a tour of the provinces with a troupe of musicians and singers conducted by Prince Galitzin.

Its appears that Jullien’s widow was drawn to interesting men, as Galitzin was a Russian aristocrat and war hero who was also being dragged through the bankruptcy courts.

Jullien was not the originator of the promenade concert in Britain but his dynamic personality and his showmanship, combined with an astute choice of crowd-pleasing music, ensured that this genre became hugely popular.

He had once stated that his policy was ‘to provide entertainment, relaxation and education for the masses’.

On 10 August1895, a musical promoter name Robert Newman teamed up with

conductor Henry J. Wood to put on a promenade concert at the Queens Hall in London. Like Jullien before them, Newman and Wood wanted to bring a broad range of classical music to a much wider audience. The concerts would be less formal, with affordable ticket prices and a varied programme, played by accomplished musicians. This concert was the first of what was to become the national institution of the Proms. The BBC took over in 1927 and continue to run the highly successful concert series to this day. Though Jullien’s name is largely unknown today, with his Walworth association lost in the mists of time, musical historians rightly celebrate his memory and legacy as one of the founding fathers of the Proms.

GLA Member for Southwark & Lambeth I recently met with local councillors and community groups at City Hall, who share my concerns about the impact of potential changes to routes. Invitees to the meeting included the Walworth Society, SE5 Forum and councillors from wards set to be affected.

I will scrutinise TfL over its approach every step of the way, putting the needs of Southwark at the forefront of my questioning.

I will continue to call on the Government to come to the table with a multi-year financial settlement for TfL so it can avoid making these cuts.

Two years of short-term sticking

I welcome the extra scrutiny of, and support to, the service as it is placed into a form of special measures by HMICRS after several serious failures including strip searching of vulnerable children without safeguarding controls.

It’s vital the Met accepts that a systematic culture change is needed to regain the confidence of Londoners.

Finally, I was incredibly proud to see so many people celebrate 50 years of Pride in London and I wish the best of luck to the England Lionesses who have started the Women’s Euros with fantastic results – it’s coming home!

K-pop should pay for Bermondsey Carnival

I

t is indeed devastating that the Bermondsey Carnival has now been called off, after not getting enough money.

This is a well-rehearsed figure now, but £10,000 from Southwark Council for a free event that attracts thousands of people is a paltry sum. It’s just not enough.

We understand the council’s logic of spreading the wealth elsewhere to other events in the borough. But which other events have the decades - (or if you want to be generous, century) long track record that the Bermondsey Carnival does? Which other events have such genuine, established grassroots support of such a wide range of local people?

The extortionately priced K-pop festival happening in the same park in the same summer is a cruel irony. We don’t want to be killjoys. These events have to happen somewhere, and Southwark Park is a beautiful location in an accessible part of inner London. Let’s hope it’s a great success, and everyone who goes has a great time and wants to come back and visit the rest of the park later on.

But the fact is, these paid-for events - on public land - are supposed to pay for the free, community events. Southwark’s Cllr Alice Macdonald said this herself when the K-pop festival was approved. In this case, we’re getting the paid-for event that no-one local asked for, and nothing in return.

Let’s hope this is a one-off and the Bermondsey Carnival comes back next year with proper funding.

The questions remains - where to build?

T

here are no easy answers when it comes to where to build new council homes in an inner London borough like ours. We respect the views of the many people on council estates where Southwark was considering building rooftop homes, and their relief now that the works have been paused. But the new homes have to go somewhere.

Of course, that’s easy to say when you’re not being kept up by loud building noises, having holes drilled through your ceiling, or the walls of your flat vibrating because of the works.

We have 16,000 households on the waiting list. Everyone deserves a good place to live. Building new, Flyer_A5.pdf high-quality homes, and building 1 12/10/2021 22:35 them quickly, is a necessity. Yes, you can and should look back at the Heygate and ask where the council homes there went. But that was a decade ago: we also have to look forward and accept that new homes are going to be built. The question is - where?

Adding to his impressive revamping of historical plays, Richard Bean, alongside cowriter Oliver Chris, has struck gold again with his fresh reworking of Sheridan’s 1755 comedy “The Rivals” to bring us the comedy delight “Jack Absolute Flies Again”, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

Located this time during World War Two, audiences are greeted with idyllic green rolling hills framing the impressive Malaprop Hall where Mrs Malaprop (Caroline Quentin) resides.

Quentin’s playing of Mrs Malaprop has elements of Abigail’s Party & Mrs Bouquet, lightening wartime events when offering to ‘show us around her piles’. Quentin shines, naughtily sending up the aristocracy with endless misappropriations and innuendos, whilst later recapturing her risqué young dancing days by impressively re-enacting the splits.

Upon her green lawns sit the Royal Air Force base, around which the story unfolds, audiences being introduced to a host of characters playing fighter pilots, including central figure Jack Absolute (Laurie Davidson), warring as much with the Germans as for the heart of Lydia Languish who tells him, ‘I may have found you mildly amusing once, Jack, like a pickled onion in the shape of a bum’!

Female emancipation and class are comically sent up with Lydia (Natalie Simpson) quipping ‘They don’t trust women with ammunition, scared we might press the wrong tit’. Being obliviously ignorant of her reliance on her maid Lucy, she asks Dudley (Kelvin Fletcher) to ‘Sit with me, Dudley, and tell me what it’s like to be poor in the North’.

Renowned British Artist Stuart Semple will devise a free and immersive one-day festival at Dulwich Picture Gallery which will showcase his new work, along with performances from the City of London Sinfonia and a joyful line up of activities.

The Festival of Happiness will make use of the Gallery’s expansive gardens and, in recognition of the challenges of the past two years, will encourage recovery and embrace hope and joy through colourful and imaginative interventions, workshops and family trails.

A highlight of the festival will be the premiere of Semple’s new work Something Else, an elaborate series of sculptural installations spread throughout the Gallery’s gardens. Visitors will be invited to follow a map designed

by Semple which will guide them through this interactive artwork, which will sit alongside family-friendly workshops and a series of relaxed performances from the City of London Sinfonia.

Smith leads Stars fightback at Thunder

By Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk LAUREN SMITH made 73 not out and Bethan Miles took three for 15 on her debut as South East Stars fought back from 122 for nine to inflict a third defeat in three games on the north-west based side, Thunder, in this year’s Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy last weekend.

After posting a clearly competitive 198 all out on a wicket helpful to the spinners, the Stars dismissed Thunder for 146 to complete a fine 52-run victory and achieve their second win in the 50-over competition.

“We started well in the first innings and I had to work really hard with some of the younger girls in the back end of the innings,” Smith said. “But it was all about the smarts of cricket in the end.

“We’re pretty happy with the performances all-round. Dani Gregory, who shared that lastwicket stand with me, was really clear about what her decisionmaking was and I really trusted her.

We worked together well in what was a tough situation.

“Bethan put on the pressure on the batters. She knew the wicket would be turning, so she knew what her role was. But she did that admirably and it was really great, especially on debut.

“The wicket was spin-friendly, so you really had to graft and then cash in at the end. You had to work hard at the start but if you did, you know there’d be stuff you could put away.”

Alex Hartley, Lancashire slow left-armer, added: “That last-wicket partnership was brilliant for them.

For us to have them 120 for nine and then not to bowl them out for less than 150 was where they won the game. So credit to those last two batters but it was a game we should have won and that hurts when you’re sitting in the dressing room.”

Kia Oval duo red hot on day 1 Surrey and Essex trade fierce blows in blistering oven-like conditions

Surrey’s Dan Worrall took 6 for 56

By Mark Baldwin sport@southwarknews.co.uk ADAM ROSSINGTON and Dan Worrall were the first-day heroes at the Kia Oval, with no.7 Rossington scoring an extraordinary 100 and Worrall bowling brilliantly to take 6 for 56 as Surrey and Essex traded fierce blows in blistering oven-like conditions.

Rossington rushed to his century with an exhilarating assault on the second new ball, in Essex’s 271 all out, clubbing Kemar Roach for three legside sixes before wearily skying the same bowler to long on in the 83rd over.

Simon Harmer’s 50 was another fine effort as Essex rallied hard after Worrall had earlier taken 3 for 0 in five balls as the LV= Insurance County Championship leaders initially reduced their opponents

to 91 for 6 by lunch.

In 9.1 overs’ batting before stumps, Surrey replied with 24 for 1 with Ryan Patel, pushing forward, caught at second slip for 4 off Sam Cook from what proved to be the final ball of the day. Rory Burns remained 18 not out.

The determined seventh wicket stand of 113 in 41 overs between Rossington and Harmer held up Surrey for more than two and a half hours and also blunted an attack that had looked unstoppable in the morning session.

Worrall, Roach and Jamie Overton were all highly impressive in a sustained, topclass exhibition of pacy swing bowling, with only Alastair Cook resisting for long in the opening session as Surrey’s battery of fast and fast-medium bowlers exerted an early stranglehold every bit as oppressive as the near-40 degree temperatures.

Nick Browne got to 10 with a couple of flowing offside strokes before Roach shaped one away from the left-hander from around the wicket to force him to thin-edge to keeper Ben Foakes in the fifth over.

And although Tom Westley did well to dig out a searing Roach yorker early on as he reached 11, helping Cook to take Essex to 50, the Essex captain became the first of three strikes in quick succession by Worrall when he played around a straight ball and was bowled by the Australian’s third ball back into the attack.

Worrall then pinned Dan Lawrence legbefore for 0 with his next ball and, with the first ball of his next over, made one climb steeply at Paul Walter to have the tall lefthander caught at leg slip off the glove.

Matt Critchley narrowly survived two confident lbw appeals by Worrall, who was

combining sharp outswing and inswing with exemplary control, and Essex did well almost to reach the sanctuary of the lunch interval before Surrey’s quicker bowlers intervened again.

Overton, reintroduced five minutes before the break by Surrey captain Burns for a second spell – this time from the Vauxhall End – angled his second ball across Cook to have England’s record Test run-getter well held by Ollie Pope at second slip for a 75-ball 29.

Roach then bowled Critchley for 21 off an inside edge and both Rossington and Harmer had to negotiate a number of legbefore appeals in the afternoon session before reaching tea at 194 for 6.

Rossington, on 16, also edged a brute of a ball from Overton just out of third slip’s reach for four and, on 28, was close to being lbw to Tom Lawes. Harmer, for his part, narrowly avoided the umpire’s raised finger against Overton on 6 and Roach on 26. The West Indian paceman, in particular, looked distraught at the not out decision.

Fourth-placed Essex, starting this game on the back of three successive championship wins but still 47 points adrift of Surrey, albeit with a game in hand, had chosen to bat on a well-grassed surface and Rossington’s heroics made sure they reached a competitive total.

Harmer, having faced 147 balls, was finally lbw to Worrall, who then trapped Shane Snater in front two balls later to leave Essex 204 for 8.

But tailender Sam Cook’s unbeaten 21 was a more than useful hand as 58 more runs were added with Rossington for the ninth wicket. After Rossington had gone to Roach (3 for 63) for his superb 151-ball and 227-minute effort, featuring those three late sixes and nine fours besides, Worrall finished the innings by having last man Jamie Porter leg-before for a duck.

Worrall said: “I think we are happy with that after losing the toss and having to bowl on the hottest day on record in the UK! “We had to go out there with the right attitude and to get six wickets in the first session was a major boost. We had to battle for the last four, but Adam Rossington and Simon Harmer both played really well in the middle session and they will also be happy with where they are now so it’s game on.

“It’s always nice to get a few wickets, but today it was even nicer to pop off the field after 80-odd overs in that blistering heat.”

By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAD the better of their clash between the bottom two teams in Division 1 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship last weekend, but for the third time in four weeks they were unable to separate the last pair and had to settle for a winning draw.

Stoke D’Abernon won the toss and put Dulwich in to bat. Their innings was built

around another half century by opener Ollie Steele, his fourth in six weeks.

Aided by a succession of byes the score advanced steadily as he shared stands of 27 for the first wicket with James Schofield, 23 for the second with Frankie Brown and 18 for the third with skipper Chris Purshouse. Veer Patel joined him at 64-3 in the 17th over and they added 66 in 16.4 overs for the fourth wicket.

Patel’s dismissal for 39, off 57 balls, brought in Dan Crowley, who smashed 33 off 39 balls while dominating a stand of 39 for the fifth wicket. His dismissal was followed four overs later by that of Steele, who had faced 132 balls for his valuable 69. At 190-6 in the 48th over the stage seemed set for a late onslaught

towards a declaration, but the innings lost momentum against tight bowling by the spinners, and they subsided to 230 all out after 64.3 overs. Robbie Keaton, with 23 off 47 balls, was the only one of the later batsmen to make double figures.

Stoke had 55 overs to get the runs, but got off to a bad start as Crowley took two wickets in his third over to reduce them to 14-2. Junaid Allie added a bright 21 off 31 balls before falling to Ahmed Khan, and they went in to tea at 58-3 after 18 overs. After the interval Alistair Curran rode his luck to smash 57 off 61 balls and take his side to 115 in the 32nd over before falling to Brown. His dismissal was followed in Khan’s next over by that of opener James Corbishley, who had been

largely strokeless while taking 84 balls to compile just 18 runs, out of a total of 115.

Tom Frost and skipper Ian Hopton thus came together in the 33rd over with 116 still wanted off 22 overs. Hopton batted obdurately while wickets fell at the other end. Salaar Waqar removed Frost for 21 to make it 145-6 after 40. Alex Gledhill removed Ben Townsend, also for 21, to make it 179-7 in the 48th.

The lower order now tried to bat out time and reach the winning draw target of 197, but a wicket for Khan in the 53rd over and one for Crowley in the 54th left the last pair with nine balls to face for survival, which they duly achieved.

Hopton remained unbeaten on 28 off 75 balls as the innings closed on 192-9.

Khan troubled all the batsmen to finish with 3-61 off 19 overs and would have had more with better support from his fielders. Crowley put in his best performance for the Club, taking 3-36 off 10.

Dulwich will reflect on another missed opportunity, which could have been avoided if all the chances had been taken.

Nonetheless they take thirteen points from the match against seven by their opponents and move one point above them. They are now only three points behind Beddington in eighth position, as just four points separate the bottom three.

This weekend, Dulwich have a difficult away trip to Spencer, who are third.

Hamlet force Gunners to fire blanks

sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET dug deep in the heat to grind out a goalless draw against a talented Arsenal under-23 side last weekend.

Dulwich welcomed the Gunners to Champion Hill on a scorching summer’s day that meant multiple drinks breaks introduced for the players’ safety.

Despite what the score-line said, the game was one with many chances. Hamlet’s Nana Owusu rattled the bar after just four minutes after chopping inside the Arsenal right-back and unleashing from 20 yards out.

The away side then had a strong spell up the other end. Salah Oulad M’hand and Charlie Patino both tested Charlie Grainger in the Dulwich goal from distance. Grainger saved well but soon gave the ball away cheaply when playing from out the back, only to be bailed out by experienced centreback Ronny Vint, who hooked Matt Smith’s effort off the line.

The visitors continued to pile the pressure on. Patino – who has already played and scored for Arsenal’s senior team – curled against the bar from 25 yards.

The second half saw a flurry of changes for both teams. Arsenal continued to move the ball fluidly with skipper Smith – who played 43 times on loan at Doncaster Rovers in League One last season – keeping things ticking over in midfield.

But Dulwich were up to the test.

The impressive Kreshnec Krasniqi won the ball deep in his own half, carried it for 40 yards unopposed before playing in a trialist leftwinger, who dragged his effort wide.

After an entertaining draw, Hamlet boss Gavin Rose was pleased with what he had seen.

“For me, the game today is about us getting

minutes in the bank,” Rose told the News. “I thought we got some really good minutes in the bank against a good Arsenal team.”

Looking ahead to the new season, Rose is happy with the improvements of the facilities around the club.

He said: “Still work being done on the changing rooms but at least an effort has

arrange sponsorship to obtain a number of indoor rowing machines to at least start an indoor rowing club at my own school, St Thomas the Apostle.”

WALWORTH SCHOOLBOY Jamie Rimmer, 14, has finished a superb first season in rowing ranked fifth in the UK.

The British Rowing National Junior Championships were held at Nottingham National Water Centre last weekend and Jamie reached the ‘A’ final in the J14 singles boat finishing fifth. His crewed four boat reached the ‘B’ final and took bronze.

Jamie had only been rowing in a single boat for four weeks.

“The dream of any rower is to go to the Nationals and make an ‘A’ final and so I ought to be delighted. It is a huge achievement, but to be honest I am disappointed,” admitted Jamie, a pupil at St Thomas the Apostle School.

“I did want to make the podium and have a medal around my neck. My lack of experience caught me out, conditions were quite windy, and I had difficulty steering the boat. At one point I thought I might have gotten the bronze medal, but my oar hit a buoy and that brought me to a standstill.

“All three boys on the podium had been rowing single boats for a number of years whereas all my experience has only been

gained in the last four weeks. I am still a complete beginner where single boats are concerned.

“There’s no excuses. The experience has been a huge eye-opener for me. Had I been fitter and stronger I may have done better. Next season I will be way better prepared and I can’t wait to see what is to come.”

The crewed four boat in the ‘B’ final were involved in a thrilling race.

Jamie added: “At about 300m from home there were five of us in line fighting for second place and I am told we looked the stronger. We made our move and took a clear advantage but quickly conceded it as one-by-one each of the opposition passed us and before we knew it, we were last and in big trouble. In the last 100m we found our stride and pulled back into third place rapidly closing at the line. Had there been a few yards more to race we would have taken second place.”

Jamie can now reflect on an outstanding first year in the sport.

“That’s the end of the season for now,” Jamie said. “I can’t wait for next year to come and see how my rowing career progresses. I would still love to get into a proper rowing school but there’s not too many of those in south London!

“For now, my next immediate target is to

Rose could still add to his squad: “If I’m being honest, I’d like to [bring in more players]. Budget would be the issue...but there are players out there I like that I think would complement the group well.”

Meanwhile, the Hamlet were beaten 3-1

by Millwall under-23s at Champion Hill on Tuesday evening.

The oppressive heat played a part in a cautious approach from both teams in the first 20 minutes. A trialist on the left wing for Hamlet flashed two efforts wide from 25 yards, one off either foot. Home fans might be hoping to see more of him this season.

Millwall forward Seb Drozd came inside on his left foot in the 27th minute before fizzing the ball in to Tom Leahy, who turned before slotting home Kevin Nugent’s Millwall were playing some excellent football and went 2-0 up before half-time. Drozd raced on to a bouncing ball outside the Dulwich box and struck his half-volley early across goal from 20 yards.

The home side grew into the game in the second half and 20 minutes in Kalvin Kalala reduced the deficit with a side-foot volley from a delightful Andre Blackman delivery.

Dulwich pushed for a late equaliser but were punished from a set-piece, when Kamarl Grant headed in from close range from a corner.

Rose’s side travel to Farnborough this Saturday for a 1pm kick-off.

Of course, a defeat against lower-ranked opposition can often leave fans feeling red-faced, but many sides have gone on to achieve their goals despite slipping up before the start of the campaign.

Similarly, supporters should never get too ahead of themselves if they start winning lots of games in pre-season. Of course, it’s better to earn a victory than suffer a defeat, but deluding yourself before a ball has even been kicked can be an incredibly dangerous game to play.

Fortunately, Millwall find themselves facing the latter dilemma. The Lions beat Colchester United 1-0 to earn their third win of pre-season thanks to Jake Cooper’s goal in first-half stoppage time.

There are, in fact, a couple of ways of looking at this match. On the surface, the result is fine. A 1-0 win in Essex, while not incredible, is another solid result for Gary Rowett’s side. It allows them to build on the previous results which also saw them keep a clean sheet - that’s a fine habit to start picking up before the start of the campaign.

Analysing the performance subsequently becomes much more important, but also much trickier. It’s important to remember that most of the first-team squad had played three matches in just six days, and there were a lot of tired legs as a result.

That wasn’t necessarily evident early on, when Mason Bennett’s defencesplitting pass played Benik Afobe through on goal. Unlike earlier in the week, the striker couldn’t find the back of the net, instead forcing a save from Shamal George to win the opening corner of the game. It felt like a matter of time before they took the lead.

But that time soon passed and Millwall’s tempo dropped as a result. While the Lions dominated the ball throughout the first half, it was because they sat off Colchester throughout, who in turn allowed the visitors to pass it across their back line without trying to break into the final third.

Zian Flemming played in front of Millwall fans for the first time That lack of urgency suddenly evaporated just after the half-hour mark, when Cooper caught Emyr Huws with a late tackle, brutally rolling the midfielder’s ankle at 90 degree ankle.

The Millwall centre-back was given a yellow card, while Huws was stretchered off after receiving treatment on the pitch.

As the Colchester fans booed every time Cooper touched the ball from then on, it seemed inevitable that he would be the one that would ultimately decide the game. A Ryan Leonard long throw-in landed perfectly on the defender’s head, allowing him to flick the ball up and over George to open the scoring in first-half stoppage time.

game after the break, with most of the drama coming from a continuous scuffle between Afobe and Junior Tchamadeu.

That all seemed to change in the final third of the game when Zian Flemming made his first appearance in front of the Millwall fans.

The Dutchman looked a bit rusty at times, which is understandable, but helped to bring his teammates into the game. He helped to create chances for fellow substitutes Danny McNamara and Isaac Olaofe, but neither were able to convert from close range. George’s heroics kept the Lions out in the second half, with Flemming also unable to fire the ball past Colchester’s young goalkeeper.

not before George Evans could lash a fierce shot over the crossbar from distance in the dying embers. It was enough to see Millwall leave with another pre-season win, even if the performance didn’t quite match the result.

Colchester were, in truth, deserving of something from the game. While they didn’t have much of the ball, they looked sharp in the final third and just lacked a final touch to get themselves level in the second half. They took advantage of Millwall’s tired legs, but didn’t quite have enough quality to earn a result.

Judging the Lions’ off Friday’s performance would be harsh, because the reality is that they weren’t very good. But that’s often how pre-season

fixtures play out, and the match will have certainly highlighted a number of areas that Rowett will want to improve upon ahead of facing Stoke on the opening day of the Championship season.

Lions face final pre-season test

The fixture will come just one week before the start of the new Championship campaign when the Lions host Stoke City, and it will be one final chance for a number of players to prove that they have what it takes to start against the Potters.

The likes of Tyler Burey and Isaac Olaofe have impressed so far in preseason, but may find it hard to work their way into Gary Rowett’s plans after signing Zian Flemming and

Benik Afobe on permanent deals earlier in the summer.

Both will be expected to start against the Tractor Boys and against Stoke on the opening day, while the same could be said for the likes of George Honeyman, Charlie Cresswell and Jamie Shackleton.

However, the Millwall boss is adamant that the lineup he chooses for their final pre-season game won’t necessarily be the same side that plays the following week on the opening day.

“We’re just trying to learn little things and have an idea of what we might look to play against Stoke. I think that you can never play one team, you can always have someone

that doesn’t play very well and another comes on to replace him and does really well. That gives you food for thought.

“We know our squad, we know the options that we have for Stoke, and we’ll try to pick those options wisely for the right game. But we need every player to be motivated and ready to play their part, but of course they can’t all start in the first game and I certainly wouldn’t sit here and say that whoever starts against Ipswich will also start against Stoke.”

Millwall beat Ipswich 3-0 at Portman Road in last year’s preseason friendly, although the hosts went on to have an underwhelming campaign, finishing 11th.

Kieran McKenna is looking to get his side back in the hunt for promotion next season, having made four summer signings including Freddie Ladapo from Rotherham United and Marcus Harness from Portsmouth.

Gary Rowett has opted to play Burey, 21, in a slightly deeper position than he was playing in last season, lining up as an attacking midfielder against Crystal Palace, Dartford and Colchester United.

“It’s just something different. Because I’m an out-and-out winger, the striker position

doesn’t really suit me as much, even though I can still play it,” Burey told the News.

“It doesn’t suit my strengths, and I probably need to be able to use my strengths in the game.

“The gaffer played me as a no.10, and I think that I found that a lot of space started to open up. Then my best attributes started to come out.

“Last season was more about me playing as a striker or in the front three. I was basically a winger in the front three, but playing as a 10 has come in now really, in this pre-season. I just took it well and now I’ve got to learn how to be dangerous in

that position.”

This new role allowed Burey to double the Lions’ lead away at Dartford, curling a stunning effort into the top corner from outside of the penalty area. The forward explained that he’s “very good at coming inside on my right foot, so as soon as I took the shot, I knew that it was going in.”

Regardless of where he plays next season, he knows that he’ll face increased competition for a spot in the starting lineup after the Lions have moved to bring four new signings to the club over the summer.

“I don’t really get nervous when it comes to competition. I just take it as it comes,

and then I’m ready. It pushes me on and tells me that I have to be on it. It makes everyone else think the same thing 24/7 to make sure that they’ve got themselves in a good situation.”

Burey believes that the pressure will help himself and his teammates perform better, and while he knows that the club have lofty aspirations as a unit, his own personal targets are much more reserved.

“It’s really early to say, but I think when the games kick off that everyone has it in their heads that they want the same thing.

If we can come together like that, we’ll bridge the gap to the top six in that sense.

On the surface, the Lions are calm and collected, doing what they need to without a fuss. But below the water, the club are working incredibly hard to keep afloat and get deals done.

While Millwall CEO Steve Kavanagh described the transfer market as “exceptionally difficult”, Gary Rowett explained that his perspective didn’t exactly align with that statement.

“I’ve probably got a slightly different

experience of it,” the manager told the News.

“As a manager you just look at which players you want and you kind of leave Alex (Aldridge) and Steve (Kavanagh) to get on with the negotiating side of it.

“Whilst I’m aware of it, and whilst I’m sort of involved in certain parts of it, I suppose it’s hard for me to gauge the exact challenges of those last crucial moments. For me, I’m really just looking at which players can improve us and hope that the other guys can get the job done, which they have done so far.

“We’ve been pretty proactive and there’s some good deals that’ve been done, but for every deal we’ve done there’s probably been two or three that’ve fallen by the wayside. So it

has been a difficult window but at the moment, however difficult it’s been, I think it’s been a successful one, and we’ve still got a couple to do.

A successful summer window so far has seen Millwall sign five players while also breaking their transfer record to bring Zian Flemming to The Den from Fortuna Sittard. However, Rowett is keen to get a couple more deals over the line, and hasn’t ruled out working past the start of the Championship season.

“I’d hope that we’ve probably got a couple of things, hopefully two, maybe three more players to bring in,” he explained.

“Of course, it’s very difficult to pinpoint when that’s going to happen.

We’re working very hard still.

“I think getting some early business done has been quite good, and it’s allowed us to sit back and look at the group and the squad to assess where we think that’s at. But as we move forward, the quicker we can get some of those in the better.

“Hopefully we’ll have a little bit of movement, but when that is I couldn’t really say.”

“Personally, I have targets, but I keep them more to myself. It’s more about me starting games and doing more than what I did last season. Not ten times more, but making sure I get myself in the squad and I’m not just coming off the bench for 20 minutes. I want to be starting and showing everyone what I can do.

“You’ve got to be realistic. The game time is the main thing. When I was at Hartlepool, I got injured unfortunately but I was playing games there and showing their fans what I can do. I’m now at Millwall from the start of the season and I want to do the same thing.”

The centre-back joined the club ahead of the 2017/18 season after a successful loan spell from Reading was made permanent. It would be the Lions’ first campaign back in the Championship after winning promotion from League One. A partnership with Shaun Hutchinson would soon start to blossom, and by 2022, they would

be the only two members of that team to still be at The Den. That longevity is something that Cooper has enjoyed, telling the News that he’s never sought after a move away.

“I love it at the football club. I enjoy being around all the lads that we’ve got, the staff, the chairman, Steve [Kavanagh], Alex [Aldridge].

I’ve got great relationships all the way through the club. I’ve just decided to keep going, to try and achieve something with this football club that means so much to me.”

Aside from the obvious connection that he has built up with the club,

Cooper has been impressed with the work that they’ve done off the pitch to strengthen the squad ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign.

“The chairman has shown his ambition to push the club forward, which is great. We’re obviously looking at a younger and hopefully hungrier squad, people desperate to achieve something.

“We’ve signed four players so far and that’s good. I think with another attacking option we’ll have a great squad.”

Alex Pearce left Millwall at the end of his contract, joining AFC Wimbledon earlier in the summer.

He now believes that, together with Hutchinson, they will need to step up to help guide the Lions into the immediate future.

“I spent a lot of time with Pearcy in his last year and the season before that. I learned a lot from him in that department, and me and Hutchy have been working really well together, he’s been great.

We’ve helped each other in terms of having that leadership group and in terms of speaking to the manager, the staff or the players to sort out certain bits.”

Lions loan second Leeds youngster

By Alex Jones sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL have announced the signing of Jamie Shackleton on a season-long loan from Leeds United.

Shackleton, 22, was left out of the Whites’ pre-season tour of Australia ahead of a loan move this summer, with Reading reportedly rivalling the Lions to acquire his signature.

After discussions with manager Gary Rowett, the midfielder decided that a move to The Den would be the best next step for his career, joining up with the first-team squad before Wednesday’s pre-season friendly against Hammarby IF. Shackleton is a natural no.8, but his versatility will be a key asset for the club in the upcoming campaign, being able to play at right-back and provide cover for Danny McNamara when required. He’s made 27 appearances in the Premier League since winning promotion with Leeds in 2020.

Speaking on Millwall’s Recast platform, Shackleton described his play style and explained that he likes “to get stuck in and get around.”

“I want to cover as much as the pitch and help out as much as I can, tackling and covering the ball, then moving forward with it.”

He added that he aimed to help the Lions reach the Premier League during his time at the club, a feat that would go down as his second promotion to the top flight should it be achieved.

“I’ve played in the Championship with Leeds. We had a very good season that year and we managed to win promotion, and that should be the aim to do that here with Millwall.”

Shackleton becomes the second Leeds player to join Millwall on loan this summer following Charlie Cresswell’s move to Bermondsey at the start of July.
