The borough sent out 183,192 penalty charge notices, at a maximum rate of £120 each to motorists from April 2021 to March 2022, the latest figures available.

The fines were issued across six LTNs, which are supposed to reduce traffic and improve air quality. Activists have criticised them for making it harder to get around, and claimed that some LTNs increase traffic on neighbouring roads.

Three of the Lambeth LTNs are close to the border with Southwark:

Railton, which is between Brixton, Herne Hill and Dulwich, and where Lambeth has made or is owed £2,515,844.

Oval, which is between Kennington, Vauxhall and Stockwell, and where the council has made or is owed £3,025,636 Tulse Hill, which is between Tulse Hill and Brixton, and where the council has made or is owed £2,396,368 The biggest earner was the Streatham LTN, where the council made or is owed more than £6 million over the year.

A Lambeth Council spokesperson said: “LTNs work to reduce through-traffic, lower vehicle speeds and reduce road danger at the same time as improving air quality and enabling more walking and cycling. In our borough, which has low car ownership, they also contribute to tacking

Elephant campaigners demanding more homes over offices

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk The final plot of Lendlease’s Elephant Park development is set to become an “office-led” building instead of housing as originally planned.

Under the Section 106 agreement signed in 2013 between Southwark Council and Lendlease, Plot H1’s “principal land use” is earmarked as “residential”. But LendLease has submitted a new planning application for the site, which includes 62,974 sqm of floorspace including 48,750 sqm of office space and zero flats.

This is possible because, having built 2,689 homes on Elephant Park, with 25 per cent to be rented at an ‘affordable rate’, LendLease has already fulfilled its housing obligation.

However, the application has received hundreds of objections, highlighting a “loss of housing”, that the building is taller than the original plans, and a possible increase in traffic congestion.

The 35% Campaign, a housing campaign group, said: “This site was always intended for housing and it should be used for housing, not offices. LendLease has only built 25% affordable housing, when it should have been 35% - the difference could be as many as 300 urgently needed affordable homes.

“Southwark should tell Lendlease to make up the affordable housing shortfall on H1, which is the final Elephant Park site. It’s outrageous that they are even considering Lendlease’s proposal for an office block instead.”

The figures were released in response to a Freedom of Information request by Jerry Green, an independent journalist based in Crystal Palace.

His research also found that Southwark Council issued more than 123,000 fines for motorists driving through the Walworth, Dulwich and Goldsmith Road in Peckham, over the same April 2021-March 2022 period. In their response to the FOI request, Southwark Council offers used the discounted figure of £65 if fines are

The New Southwark Plan would have made such a large office development impossible, but council-approved changes have paved the way for H1’s application, according to the 35% campaign.

Cllr Helen Dennis, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency & Sustainable Development, said: “The council refutes this suggestion. The changes to employment space made in the New Southwark Plan date back to the Employment Land Review of 2016. They reflect the need to accommodate new jobs in

the borough while still enabling the council to meet its targets for new homes. The changes were tested, independently, by the Planning Inspectorate in 2020 and found to be sound.”

The demolished Heygate Estate, the site of the Elephant Park development, was built with 1,200 council homes.

Of the 2,689 homes being built on Elephant Park, only 541 are classed as ‘affordable’, and just 92 of those will be let at at social rent.

A spokesperson for Lendlease said: “The revitalisation of Elephant & Castle has been taking place for over a decade, in response to priorities set out by Southwark Council’s vision for the area.

“This proposal helps meet a requirement for new workspace and employment in the heart of the area, which has been identified in planning policy set out by the Mayor of London in the New London Plan and by Southwark Council. It’s symbolic of the area’s success and the evolution of the town centre that there is now such a clear need for new high-quality workspace, which will bring thousands of new jobs and a daytime population that will help the local economy thrive.

“This will be a striking and sustainable new building that has been designed to appeal to some of London’s most dynamic businesses; while also ensuring that a considerable proportion of the ground floor of the new building is maintained as publicly accessible space for use by local people.

“We’re also currently in discussions with Southwark and the NHS to provide a new community health hub within the building to help tackle health inequalities in the area.”

The application is expected to go before a planning committee some time in September.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey’s Kirby Estate residents have outdone their patriotic support for England’s football teams yet again - by having a mural done of the estate’s namesake, women’s star Fran Kirby.

The estate, famed for its displays of hundreds of England flags strung up for football tournaments, has added the permanent wall painting on a thirteen foot by thirteen foot wall on the north side of the estate.

Chelsea and England forward Ms Kirby, 29, is currently training with the

national side ahead of a game against Norway last Monday evening, July 11, but will do an official mural unveiling after the Euro 2022 is over, estate residents said.

Chris Dowse, who helped organise the mural, painted overnight last Sunday, July 10, said: “It’s all about supporting our teams and showing some positivity.

Fran is a great player and we thought with the name similarity it’s too good an opportunity to be missed.”

The mural was done by the Murwalls street art collective, who also painted men’s stars Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and manager Gareth Southgate in Vinegar Yard by London Bridge after their heroics getting to last summer’s Euros final.

Speaking from the estate, Mr Meana, the veteran artist who actually painted the Kirby mural, said: “When I got the chance to do this one, I jumped at chance.

“I love women’s football - there’s no point comparing it to the men’s, it’s just a different sport. We’ve got to all get behind them now.”

Marc Silver, his colleague who designed the artwork, said one of the hardest parts was choosing which images of Ms Kirby to base the mural on. “I really like action shots of footballers, but they don’t necessarily look like themselves,” he said. “With a female player you really want to see them look like themselves and have that composure.”

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Neil Coyle “may not have survived” if he had carried on drinking, the Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP has said, in an open and frank statement about his alcohol problem.

In a written statement shared with the News, Coyle opened up about his alcohol problem that saw him drinking twelve pints a day, five times a week.

“Health tests done to check for any long-term damage revealed my heart was beating so fast and irregularly I was at significant risk of a stroke,” he said. “The truth is, if I’d continued drinking, I may not have survived and that is a very scary thought with a sixyear-old daughter.”

He said he had stopped drinking nineteen weeks ago - in early March “with the help of a strong network of professionals and friends who have been crucial”. He has lost two stone in the four months since giving up.

Coyle, 43, was suspended from the Labour Party in February this year after an alleged racist comments made to a Westminster journalist of Chinese descent in a parliamentary bar. He has since apologised.

Coyle said in his statement on Tuesday, July 7, that his drinking “undoubtedly affected my demeanour and attitude and contributed to my own suspension from the Labour Party earlier this year,” adding that alcohol is not an excuse for bad behaviour.

And drinking is “deeply, culturally” ingrained into life in the houses of Parliament, Coyle said.

“It is amazing how routine it is now to have to decline drinks in Westminster as well as through my committee work and locally.

“Often, people are trying to be nice but do not always accept a refusal to drink. I have discovered that teetotal life is like constantly running into Mrs Doyles from Father Ted: go on, go on, go on; you will, you will, you will! It is strange to have to repeatedly decline alcohol.” He added that avoiding being around people drinking is “impossible” in Parliament, which has eight bars.

Coyle said that he began drinking more and more because of the stress of working as an MP, including his public spats with then-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. The death of his father and one of his best friends within six weeks of each other also “took their toll”.

The investigation linked to the suspension means I’m prohibited from speaking publicly or face sanctions, but I’ve apologised for inappropriate language and behaviour and will continue to do so.

It is very strange to be indebted to

some of those involved who may have ultimately saved my life.

Drinking in no way excuses bad behaviour, but it should not take a public scandal before someone is able to access help to stop drinking, especially given alcohol is everywhere in Westminster. When first elected in 2015, I’d have occasional drinks after work but this built up over time as stress and capacity rose.

The constant battles within Labour and attacks on me from the former leader’s cronies as well as a major trade union leader for daring to speak out against antisemitism, all contributed and losing my dad and a close friend within six weeks last year took their toll.

The multiple bars inside Parliament are also part of the picture. But it is amazing how routine it is now to have to decline drinks in Westminster as well as through my committee work and locally. Often, people are trying to be nice but do not always accept a refusal to drink. I only drank after work, but wine is freely available at lunchtime receptions and throughout the day.

The advice from professionals in

stopping drinking is to avoid alcohol altogether, but this is impossible in Parliament and I refuse to allow stopping drinking preventing me from doing my job. I’ll also continue to speak my mind and always put constituents before Party or other interests, as I have shown since 2015 in challenging the Corbyn cult’s nonsense for example.

I’m proud to serve the Bermondsey beer mile and such a brilliant hospitality sector in Southwark. I still co-chair the Wine and Spirits Parliamentary Group as their trade federation is based locally and am proud of the campaign wins we have achieved together to ensure wine buyers weren’t hit by needless new taxes post-Brexit. Given our local community, alcohol will always feature somewhere in my work, just not in my system!

the origins of Bacon’s

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Hundreds of students gathered in Bacon’s College’s theatre last Friday, July 8, for an annual church service to celebrate the school’s founder.

The theme of the service was ‘peace’.

Students sang, danced and rapped to celebrate peace. They also heard readings from teachers, and speeches from outgoing long-time governor Sir Simon Hughes and Abid, an Afghan refugee who has come to Rotherhithe, encouraging them to shun violence.

Not every school has a founder’s day, but few schools have such an interesting history as Bacon’s College.

Its founder was Josiah Bacon, described

by Sir Simon in his speech on Friday as “a leatherworker [and] a merchant who made his money out of business.”

Bacon was born in the parish of St Magdalen in Bermondsey, which is now between Bermondsey Street and Tower Bridge Road.

He founded the school in 1703 (although some sources give it as 1709) with an endowment in his will of £150 per year, to provide an education for boys whose parents were unable to pay for school. They would be taught to read and write English, and do arithmetic for free, to get them ready for a trade or to be a merchant.

That was the equivalent of £25,300 in today’s money. Bacon’s instructions were that the school should not have fewer than 40 children, but no more than 60, according to an early twentieth century history of the area.

The school was built on Grange Road in 1718. It was later moved to Pages Walk, a short distance away, before relocating finally to Rotherhithe, where it is today.

Southwark rail passengers could be hit with fresh strikes this summer after union vote

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Trains going through much of Southwark and south London are to be disrupted after workers for Southeastern voted to strike.

Southeastern, which was among thirteen railway companies whose workers chose industrial action over pay, jobs and safety concerns, runs trains through south-east London, including London Bridge, Blackfriars, Elephant and Castle, Peckham, Denmark Hill and Nunhead.

Staff at Network Rail, the public body that owns the railways themselves, also voted to strike. Network Rail wants to

cut 2,500 jobs in maintenance to make £2 billion in savings, although it said this would not compromise safety.

The timetable for the strike is unclear.

RMT, the union which organised the industrial action, said it would finalise timings in mid-June. Any strike could mean massively reduced services and make it harder for people to get around.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps said this week that the government would prioritise cargo trains moving around vital goods like food and energy sources in the event of a strike.

The railway industry is under pressure, with more people working from home.

Unions are concerned this could mean job losses and reduced timetables.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “Today’s overwhelming endorsement by railway workers is a vindication of the union’s approach and sends a clear message that members want a decent pay rise, job security and no compulsory redundancies.

“Our NEC will now meet to discuss a timetable for strike action from midJune, but we sincerely hope ministers will encourage the employers to return to the negotiating table and hammer out a reasonable settlement with the RMT.” A spokesperson for the government said: “It is hugely disappointing and premature that the RMT is calling for industrial action before even entering discussions.”

The group, which claims to be “leaderless”, appears to have originated in the UK, and hit the headlines in March 2022, when SUVs in London, Bristol, Brighton and Manchester were targetted.

The group argues that SUVs and unnecessary, “a climate disaster” and dangerous to cyclists and pedestrians.

They say they will not stop until it is “impossible to own a huge polluting 4x4 in the world’s urban areas”.

The group even has a mysterious, quasi-judicial code, with SUVs condemned for deflation described as receiving “the order of the lentil”.

Speaking to the News, an anonymous spokesperson said: “We were sick of seeing polluting cars on our streets, sick of near-death experiences while cycling when a big 4X4 tries to run us off the road.”

The group has its own bible - ‘How

to Blow Up a Pipeline’ by Andreas Malm - a controversial book that attempts to justify climate activism through sabotage, and slams “climate pacifism”.

Tyre Extinguishers says the book, which has been described by critics as “an astonishing abdication of responsibility” and “eco-terrorism”, was a founding inspiration.

Others have however praised the book as “erudite and, above all, morally serious” and offering “a stirring moral case for the necessity of escalation”.

The activists also have a personal score to settle. A spokesperson said that members once witnessed a cyclist who was “nearly killed” by a Range Rover.

“A few weeks before we got started, one of our group saw a cyclist get hit by a Range Rover and nearly killed. The Range Rover simply drove off, while pedestrians called the ambulance”, they said.

“These people are a menace and if governments won’t take action to stop them, we will.”

Since then, the decentralised organisation has spread to Glasgow, Vienna, Gothenburg, New York and Christchurch, New Zealand.

Police Officer charged with intentional strangulation following alleged assault

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A serving Metropolitan Police Officer has been charged with actual bodily harm (ABH) and intentional strangulation after a woman reported being assaulted in Honor Oak.

PC Thomas Andrews, from the South East Command Unit, has been charged with actual bodily harm, criminal damage and three counts of intentional of strangulation.

At 1am, on Saturday, July 9, patrolling officers responded to reports of an

incident on Brockley Rise, SE23, and found a woman claiming she had been assaulted and her phone damaged.

Scotland Yard said that officers spoke to a man, known to the victim, and established he was PC Andrews, an offduty police officer.

He was arrested on suspicion of ABH and criminal damage, charged, and kept in custody to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court that same day.

He has now been remanded in custody and will appear at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday, 8 August.

The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk In June, the News reported that the Peckham Arch, the metal structure overlooking the entrance to Peckham Square, is at risk of demolition.

Southwark Council is redesigning the square and recent concept designs by Spheron Architects reimagine the square without its arch.

The council has previously said the arch’s removal could make the area “feel safer” and make way for “commercial or community space”.

This week, the News hit the pavement to ask locals whether the arch should stay or go.

Christine Morgan is a 58-year-old retired healthcare assistant. Having lived in Peckham for 27 years, she said: “I think it should stay. A lot of people, especially people with mental health, go there to socialise, to interact with other people.

“So, I don’t see why they’d take it away unless they’re going to put something else there very very important there.”

Edward Pulleyn, 23, an assistant psychologist, has just moved down from York. He said: “I think if there’s a solid plan to replace with something that looks good I’m open to it - I’m not too attached to it.

“But if it’s a matter of arch or no arch, I think keep the arch”.

Clemy McAvoy, 25, works in recycling and waste management. She lives in Tottenham but is often in Peckham. She said: “I think the local community should be deciding but I do think Peckham is changing too much as an area.

“So keeping it as it is would be best rather than encouraging gentrification and forcing more and more people out.”

But Shanay Wilson-Henry, 20, who grew up in Peckham and runs a food stall with her mum in Bermondsey, was open to losing the arch. She said she was open to seeing “what other possible outcomes there are” and that “revamping” the square was a good idea.

Lucus Tomlins, a 24-year-old trainee Bricklayer from Camberwell said: “I think the arch is an important part of Peckham. It represents an important part of this area.”

Sophie Bleasdale, a 29-year-old teaching assistant walks through the arch “everyday”. She said it had a “really nice vibe” and demolishing it would be “a real shame”.

Oyeyemi Ojo Quadry said if the council wants to remove it “they must have a good reason” but is concerned about where people will shelter when it rains.

In a statement, Cllr Helen Dennis, Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency and Sustainable Growth, said: “The council commissioned Spheron to undertake an initial design study to reimagine the future of Peckham Square based on the views of local people and businesses. This has now been completed and the council is reviewing the key issues raised and prioritising work that needs to be done.”

special needs schools drivers’ strike called off

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Drivers who take children to eight Southwark schools for children with special needs and disabilities (SEND) have called off a planned strike after getting a pay rise.

The drivers, who work for HATS, had planned to go on strike next Thursday and Friday (July 14 and 15) over demands for better pay.

Before the strike was threatened, the GMB union said that the drivers were paid £250 per week as a base rate, with a £50 per week bonus for a twenty-hour week.

The drivers had not had a pay rise in eight years, according to GMB. The union was demanding a twenty per cent pay rise.

Instead they settled for a ten per cent pay rise on drivers’ basic pay, with half the bonuses consolidated into this, meaning a £25 bonus remains. That means drivers will get £300 per week guaranteed, rather than £250 if they work twenty hours.

“These members did not want to go on strike as they know how valuable their work is to special needs children and their families.

“On the flip side of the coin though, that’s all the more reason why they deserve a decent pay rise – and for the first time in eight years.

“We have also opened up more effective communication channels with HATS which can only benefit everyone moving forward.”

HATS drivers take children to SEND schools in 28 out of London’s 32 boroughs. The company is based near Waterloo.

Man in his 20s rushed to hospital after stabbing in Camberwell shopping area

The attack took place on Butterfly Walk just off Denmark Hill, with police called at 3.20am. The man’s life is not thought to be in danger.

A spokesperson for the police said: “Police were called by the

London Ambulance Service at about 03:20hrs on Friday, 8 July to reports of a man suffering from stab injuries on Butterfly Walk, SE5.

Officers attended. The man, aged in his 20s, was taken by LAS to a south London hospital; his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

“A crime scene is in place. There have been no arrests and enquiries continue. Anyone with information is asked to call police via 101 quoting reference CAD 767/08Jul.”

Tunnel track replacement to disrupt Southeastern services in late July

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk The Southeastern railway line between Brixton and Beckenham Junction will close for nine days from Saturday July 23 so the track in the Penge Tunnel can be replaced.

Stations affected by the closure include Brixton, Herne Hill, West Dulwich, Sydenham Hill, Penge East, Kent House and Beckenham Junction.

Network Rail is advising passengers to adjust their journeys to avoid unnecessary disruption to their travel plans.

Scott Brightwell, operations and

safety director for Southeastern said: “We don’t want people to get caught out, so our advice to our passengers during this work is to check before you travel, and to plan ahead by using the Southeastern website or National Rail Enquiries.

“There’s never a good time for work like this to be carried out but the work is crucial and it will mean better journeys in the future.”

The railway track inside the 1.25-mile-long tunnel is being renewed. Works involve removing the old track, digging up the track bed, and then replacing the rail and ballast using a track laying machine.

Network Rail said it has decided to

do all the repairs in a nine-day-block, rather than over the course of five weekends and two additional Sundays, to minimise disruption.

The railway company said it would carry out other maintenance work at the same to make the works more efficient and cost-effective.

The £5 million track replacement is part of the £1.25 billion South East Upgrade programme which aims to provide passengers in Kent and South East London with better journeys and fewer delays by improving railway infrastructure.

The track work will affect Southeastern services from Saturday 23 July until Sunday 31 July.

bid to tackle nhs waiting lists

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The NHS could treat people faster if they are overweight or smoke, in a bid to tackle spiralling waiting lists.

The health service is currently trialling a new ‘agile waiting list’ where people could be bumped up if they are more at risk. Being on the list for a long time will still trump other risk factors like weight, the director of the hospital where the system is being piloted said.

Professor Kiran Patel of Coventry and Warwickshire hospital told the Health

Service Journal: “You can put a different weighting on different factors. So, for example, we have slightly weighted postcodes.

“Likewise, if you have patients who smoke, have hypertension or are overweight, you can use those factors to weight the position on the waiting list.”

Around 70 NHS trusts - about a third - are reportedly interested in the software, as a means of tackling record waiting lists.

Last week, the News revealed that Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Trust currently has 91,000 on its waiting lists.

Council set to approve extra £7.5 million for climate action fund

Thousands of people gathered at Burgess Park on Saturday to celebrate Eid al-Adha, the biggest festival in the Muslim calendar.

On a scorching day of 27 degrees, between 3000 and 5000 Muslims, Christians and non-believers kicked celebrations off with a 10am prayer, followed by a day of food and fun activities.

Haija Saidatat Oketunde, Chair of the Southwark Muslim Forum, said: “The event was very inclusive and attendees came from all over the UK. We welcomed people from all nationalities, and those of other faith groups to celebrate with us on this joyous day.

“We ensured that despite all our individual differences, we were united as one through our prayer. We aimed to unite the ummah and I believe did just that.”

‘Ummah’ is an Arabic word referring to the global community of Islamic people.

This year, Eid-al-Adha is being celebrated from Saturday, July 9, to Wednesday, July 13. It marks the story of the Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham in Christianity) willingness to sacrifice his son for God, only to be given a ram instead.

After the prayer, families enjoyed henna tattoos, picnics, fresh food stalls, ice cream, and an arts and crafts stall set up by St Peter’s Church, Walworth.

The investment is being announced following recommendations from the Citizen’s Jury on Climate Change, a team of local residents helping steer the council’s climate policy.

To mark the announcement, Council Leader Kieron Williams and Cllr Catherine Rose visited Lavender Pond in Rotherhithe, to hear about the benefits of council-funded renovations on the park’s nature-rich pond, including new-planted banks and reinforced walls.

Councillor Williams said: “Last year we set out our ambitious roadmap to make Southwark net-zero. We said then that we would keep working with the people of our borough to strengthen our plans even more. That’s why we set up our Citizens’ Jury, to hear the perspectives, experiences and ideas of local people from every walk of life.

“I am deeply thankful to the members of the Jury for their brilliant report, and delighted to be setting out our updated action plan today, which responds directly to their recommendations.

Coupled with the new funding commitments we are making today, this updated plan will ensure we move even faster to end our borough’s

contribution to global warming, whilst making Southwark a better and fair place to live too.”

The £7.5 million comprises a £5 million investment in accelerating decarbonisation, and £1 million earmarked for biodiversity projects to improve green spaces. £400,000 is also being set aside for a ‘community energy fund’ and £100,000 for expanding the use of cargo bikes in the borough.

The council’s original Climate Action Plan was published in November 2021 and aims to make Southwark carbon neutral by 2030.

Since then, public buildings have been fitted with solar panels, council estates renovated with new heat pumps, roads given new cycle lanes, and new bike hangars constructed.

In March, the Citizens’ Jury on Climate Change made 93 recommendations concerning housing, energy efficiency, green spaces, transport and businesses.

The council say 82 of the the 93 recommendations are being covered by their updated Climate Action Plan or other council policies.

However, the council’s climate strategy has been subject to criticism. In February, Extinction Rebellion Southwark argued the council had failed to explain exactly how it would become carbon neutral.

Residents on the Newington Estate, which has suffered with unreliable heating for decades, have also questioned the efficacy of the heat pump retrofit.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police have recovered three electric bicycles (e-bikes) from a Bermondsey flat, which they believe were stolen, amid a string of other robbery and violent crime arrests in recent weeks.

Detective Inspector Donnett Oseni told the News that the bikes were recovered from the Dickens Estate, along with £1,000 in cash and several mobile phones.

Officers have confirmed that one of the bikes was stolen, and they are looking for the owners of the other two. The suspect, who was already known to police, was arrested and police are investigating.

Police also raided an address on Lynton Road, also in Bermondsey, and found three expensive pedal bikes and cannabis, which they seized. A suspect was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods, cannabis possession and burglary, and

referred to the youth justice service.

Officers carried out several more operations over the past few weeks across the borough. On July 3, three suspects were charged with knife-point robbery and possession of a knife. On June 10, a suspect was charged with robbery, aggravated burglary and unlawful possession of a taser.

Police ran a proactive operation on June 16 with five robbery police cars and two marked minibuses across SE1 and SE16.

DI Oseni said criminal activity was down that night and attributed it to the heavy police presence. One male suspect was arrested with a large hunting knife and a stolen phone.

Officers also put on a robbery awareness campaign that has had two events so far, called Look Up Look Out. Events ran at Peckham Rye Station on June 29, and at London Bridge, Borough Market and Canada Water station.

DI Oseni said more events took place in London Bridge, Canada Water and the South Bank last Saturday, July 9.

Police appeal for bike owners

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The 63 bus could be extended to serve Honor Oak Park station, a Transport for London (TfL) executive said last week.

The bus currently runs from Therapia Road in Forest Hill to King’s Cross, via Peckham, Elephant and Castle and Borough.

Locals have asked for decades to get the route extended a few more stops to Honor Oak Park station - a fifteen minute walk away - which is on the Overground, and also provides a rail connection to London Bridge and East Croydon.

TfL has previously said extending the 63 route to Honor Oak Park would be too expensive given the relatively low number of people who would be using it.

But Labour councillor Jon Hartley, who represents the Dulwich Hill ward, asked TfL representatives at a Southwark Council meeting on

Police recovered four bikes from Bermondsey’s Manor Estate this week that are believed to have been stolen.

A Bermondsey woman has been found dead after neighbours reported a smell of decay in their block.

The officers, from the South Bermondsey community policing unit, found the bikes in Holford House on Camilla Road.

They have reunited one of the bikes with its rightful

owner, but are still looking for the people that the other three belong to.

The body of Kathleen Hassett, 79, was found by police in her Bacon Grove flat, just off Grange Road, on June 30.

Her next of kin have been informed and the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Cllr Hartley said: “If substantial changes are being made across the TfL bus network, what consideration is being given to small improvements that could be made to current routes, such as the three stops that would be needed to expand the 63 so that it actually joined up with Honor Oak Park station that have been pursued for decades to no avail? If you’re making changes surely you should be looking at small improvements as well.”

Responding, a TfL executive said that although the agency has looked at extending the 63 in the past and decided against for cost reasons, they would consider making the changes again. He added that: “I’d like to look into conducting a review in the borough and in the Dulwich area in particular.”

TfL staff were speaking at the council’s overview and scrutiny

committee meeting to discuss the proposed bus cuts, four of which would affect Southwark. The committee had invited mayor Sadiq Khan but he did not come. Southwark Lib Dem leader Cllr Victor Chamberlain called this “a complete betrayal” of Southwark residents.

Labour and Lib Dem councillors criticised the cuts as particularly affecting vulnerable, elderly and poorer people in the borough, as well as setting back Southwark’s environmental agenda by dissuading people from using public transport.

Bus usage is at 81 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

Although Southwark is similar cuts to its buses as other boroughs like Camden and Hammersmith and Fulham, those areas are well-served by the Tube, unlike Southwark.

The consultation period, which has seen “unprecedented” numbers of people take part, has been extended to August 7. Take part by searching online.

Nigel Mountford, a neighbour, said he thought that Ms Hassett had been dead “at least a week” before she was found.

He claims that she was a “vulnerable woman with complex needs”, and believes she was was neglected by her housing association Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing (MTVH).

A spokesperson for MTVH said: “We understand how distressing Kathleen’s death must be for neighbours and all who knew her.

“Since Kathleen’s body was

discovered, we have been in regular contact with the other residents of the block to provide information, support and reassurance.

“We review all serious incidents and will assess Kathleen’s situation in detail. At this time we are not aware of any concerns of neglect or vulnerabilities in the months prior to Kathleen’s death, nor that she had raised with us any concerns about the suitability of her property or requested a move to a different property.”

Wheelchair-friendly basketball court coming to Burgess Park

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A disabled-friendly basketball pitch for Burgess Park has received planning approval, but objectors worry its 15ft fences will blight the park’s openness.

Councillors voted six to one in favour of allowing construction of a basketball court, flood lights and a 4.5 metres fences to the east of the park next to the lake, on Tuesday July 5.

A council officer said the new court meets the recommendations of an Equality Impact Assessment which concluded the sports centre needed more wheelchair-friendly facilities.

The proposed pitch, with its turf specially-designed for wheelchair users, will be part of the already-approved Burgess Park Sports Centre Hub. However, objectors raised concerns about the visual impact of towering fences, the use of Metropolitan Open Land and a perceived lack of consultation.

Susan Crisp, member of the Friends of Burgess Park Management Committee said the new fence, which backs onto the lake, affected “sight-lines, viewing and openness.”

“It is always [a case of] balancing up the different needs and different uses but... the views of park-users have not been given adequate conservation compared to sports users”, she said.

autumn 2023, were subject to extensive public consultation but included no provision for an extra basketball court.

As well as wheelchair basketball, the pitch will be used for wheelchair rugby, wheelchair football and basketball for all users.

Alejandra Texeido, CEO of Burgess Sport, a small sports charity, expressed concern that many people wouldn’t be able to afford to use the new court.

She suggested the council consider

adapting plans for the Burgess Park Sports Centre to include disabled facilities rather than infringe on free-touse open space.

But a council officer said the pitch was important to make the park more inclusive. She said: “The main aim of this planning application is to ensure that wheelchair athletes have a place to play sports within the new sports centre hub at Burgess Park. It also addresses the lack of basketball courts in the park.”

Robert Browning Primary School gets donation to make playground green

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Pupils at Walworth’s Robert Browning Primary School say they “can’t wait for a nicer and greener playground” after receiving a share of a £200,000 donation.

The money, provided by charity Trees for Cities, which received a £200,000 donation from private healthcare provider Bupa, will go towards furnishing their concrete playground with greenery.

The £200,000 donation is being split between Robert Browning Primary School and three other UK schools.

Improvements include tree planting, food growing areas and an enhanced playground, with construction to be completed by March 2023.

A year six student said: “We will get more time outside and won’t need to walk far to look at the wildlife in our area. We will learn about responsibility for looking after the plants and we will look after them nicely.”

A year three student agreed, saying: “I can’t wait for a nicer and greener playground to enjoy!”

Consultation with kids and teachers will begin in the summer, with tree planting taking place from October to March.

A year five pupil said: ““It will help our breathing with all the pollution around our school from busy roads.”

One year two student said “they love gardening” and looked forward to doing “more growing”.

Rory Field, Corporate Partnerships Director at Trees for Cities, commented: “As a charity, we fundamentally rely on the support of other brands and businesses to bring initiatives like the Holistic Health Project to some of the most deprived communities across the UK. “Thanks to everyone at Bupa who took part in #1MillionMinutes, we’ve secured funding to design an area that will help mitigate the effects of poor air quality and connect pupils at the Robert Browning Primary School to nature, thereby enriching their education.”

Five pupils from years seven and eight will head to Cornwall where they will also enjoy a VIP tour of Spaceport Cornwall, a robotics and rocket propulsion challenge at RAF St Magwan, and a coasteering adventure around marine conversation areas.

The four-day-camp, from Monday July 11 to Thursday July 14 is organised by the Jon Egging Trust, a charity that helps vulnerable young people struggling at school through science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programmes.

Teacher at the Camberwell school George Jack said: “We were so excited to hear that we were one of the winning JET to Space schools! At Ark All Saints we aim to equip all our scholars with the skills and aspirations to

succeed at university or in another career of their choice.

“The truly out-of-this-world itinerary will inspire our scholars as well as providing an amazing experience not normally accessible in South London.”

To enter the Jet2Space competition, schools had to submit a video explaining why they wanted to take part. Five winning schools were chosen.

Having secured their place on the camp, Ark All Saints Academy students will witness a key historical moment when the satellite Prometheus-2 takes off from Spaceport Cornwall.

The UK has launched satellites before, but from countries like Australia. The UK government says the launch “paves the way for the UK to become a more resilient, more robust and more significant global space entity”.

Food bank serving 250 people says current situation is unsustainable

An Elephant and Castle food bank marking its one-year anniversary has warned that the increasing flow of needy people is unsustainable.

Since July 2021, volunteers at the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star have given out food and toiletries from outside their church.

But since its inception, service users have rocketed from 50 to 250, and volunteers say they need grant funding.

Bisi Adejinmi, Proxy Leader of the Church said: “We’ve been carrying this responsibility for a year and now we need a grant. We are needed because it’s not just about picking up food - it’s hope for them.”

The food bank, which is now spending up to £3000 on the food bank every fortnight, relies solely on donations from church members.

Food bank users are from no single demographic. There are people young and old, families wheeling push chairs, and people arriving in their work clothes.

Paula, a local resident and full-time

carer for her son who has Down’s syndrome, receives just £198 in monthly benefits. After rent, she has less than £80 a week to feed, clothe and warm her family.

Visiting the food bank for the first time, the mum-of-three, who lived on the Aylesbury Estate for thirty years said: “There are days when it’s so hard it’s suicidal. If I didn’t have my children, it would be hard not to take that route.

“We were taught how to be frivolous as children of the 70s - your dinner would be a ham sandwich - so we know how to make food stretch.

“It’s more about the rent and the bills - you’re forever in debt. Nobody knows what it’s like at the lower end of society.

But I keep smiling - maybe it’s the Irish in me.”

Father-of-two Mauricio Del Valle, 54, separated from his wife in 2017 and has been homeless since. He says the food bank is “key to my survival”.

At 9.1% UK inflation is at its highest for forty years. Prices of basic foodstuffs like pasta have increased by 16.1% and lifting the energy price-cap will add an extra £700 to households’ yearly energy bills.

In May, the treasury announced that every UK household would get a £400 energy discount this autumn, with the poorest getting an additional £650.

Helen Bartlett, the food bank’s coordinator, said: “People come up to me and say ‘I didn’t have enough to eat the last couple of days but this will make up for it’. That makes you feel broken down.

“We have noticed that it is very hard, even if you are working. Lots of people are on benefits but it just doesn’t cover it.”

The Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, Falmouth Road, was founded in 1975.

Church leaders say they are about to begin applying for grant funding.

In July 2021, the church was devastated by two flash floods which destroyed their kitchen, IT room and downstairs living quarters.

The news comes as the cost of living crisis continues to bite. The council said that tens of thousands of people in the borough are living in poverty, while 22,000 need financial support. According to Southwark data, Faraday, in Walworth, is the most deprived ward, with more than 31 per cent of children in poverty, and five per cent of adults unemployed.

Some ethnic groups are in poorer health than others. Black people in Southwark have lower take-up for both Covid-19 vaccines and bowel cancer screenings, higher childhood obesity, and worse problems with food security than white people in the borough.

This is very often linked to poverty.

Nearly 30 per cent of black people in Southwark live in the most deprived parts of the borough. In Faraday, more

than 60 per cent of residents are from a black or ethnic minority background.

Life expectancy for men is 79, about average for the UK. Some fourteen per cent of adults in the ward have a serious long-term health condition. Emergency hospital admissions are five per cent above the national average.

By contrast, in Dulwich Village, where more than eighty per cent of residents are white, just five per cent of children are in poverty, a little over one per cent of adults are unemployed, just under ten per cent of adults have a serious long-term illness, emergency hospital admissions are 44 per cent below the national average, and male life expectancy is nearly 87 - well above the national average.

Despite these inequalities, Southwark said that overall health is increasing in the borough, with the rates of smoking, drinking and sedentary lifestyles better than the national average.

One in seven Southwark households earning less than £15,000 per year

The average household incomes for the UK and in Southwark were both more than double that, at about £32,000 and £33,000 respectively.

As might be expected, household income changes massively from ward to ward.

Around the Old Kent Road, one of the areas Southwark Council is actively trying to regenerate, the average household income was £24,632 in 2021. But in Dulwich Village, the average household income was more than £61,000 last year.

A sixth-form student at a Bermondsey school organised a careers fair to give children a broad view of different jobs they could do later in life.

Amarachi Ibe, 17, set up the careers fair at St Michael’s Catholic College in Bermondsey by inviting people from more than fifty businesses and organisations to discuss their professions.

Speaking during the fair on Tuesday (July 6), she told the News: “I remember having a careers fair in Year 9 that was very small.

There was no one there that I was particularly interested in. Growing up with friends that were very ambitious I was slightly frustrated that we didn’t have people to talk to about what they wanted to do.”

Amarachi, a Year 12 student and deputy head girl at St Michael’s, worked on the fair alone at first, before enlisting several other students to help. She first worked out the areas students were generally most interested in - engineering and finance - before branching out

to more niche professions. “Then it got to the stage of ‘let’s just have as many companies as we can get’,” she said. “So we just started asking anyone and everyone.”

Setting up the careers fair Aspiring doctor Amarachi said she had spoken to a scientific researcher at the careers fair, which had made her think about her future choices.

The News was also represented at the careers fair, and spoke to several students who were interested in getting involved in journalism. Some of the most popular stands appeared to be the Crown Prosecution Service, a trainee doctor, a trainee lawyer and the army.

Deptford girl Amarachi added: “Today has been a very successful day and people have come and said that they really like this person, I really like this person. People are speaking to people about careers that they don’t even necessarily want to go into but it’s just about broadening their horizons.”

Gary Smith, the head of sixth form at St Michael’s, said staff were “incredibly proud” of Amarachi and the other students who helped organise the careers fair.

Thirteen years for Peckham paedophile

Nathan Quintyne, 31, of Pioneer Street, Peckham, SE15, was found guilty of eleven counts, including

sexual assault of a child under thirteen, assault of a child under thirteen by penetration and sexual activity with a child.

He was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, July 6 2022.

His crimes spanned over a decade, from December 7 2008 to April 1 2019. One victim was subject to his abuse throughout the entire ten years.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A man who witnessed the dramatic Southwark Park knife attack in broad daylight last week has said he was “very shaken” by what he saw.

Police said they are still looking for a man who used a knife to try to rob another man of his phone in the Bermondsey park last Saturday afternoon (July 2), in a scene partly captured on film.

The Bermondsey man, who did not want to be named, said he first saw a group of “five or six lads” by the tennis courts of the park as he walked through the park with his wife.

“One of them, separate to the others, ran, and just made a beeline to a gentleman walking alone by the bowling green in a turquoise shirt. He had earbuds in talking to a friend, but I couldn’t see a phone. That lad made a beeline for him. I at that point went in that direction and said ‘don’t get involved’.”

The eyewitness told the News that he could see the would-be attacker holding a knife in its “scabbard” “Then a chase ensued,” he said. “You do hear, listening, them say ‘come on let’s go’. Then they ran off in the direction of the Gomm Road entrance.” He added that he thought they had doubled back and left by the main Southwark Park Road entrance.

The victim was understandably shocked by the incident. The eyewitness said: “I’ve lived in [the area] for 35 years but I’ve not really seen any incidents, nothing as dramatic as that.”

He added that the fact that the attempted knifepoint robbery took place in broad daylight made it seem like some kind of initiation. “It was weird - I didn’t really understand what was going on.

There are surely plenty of easier ways to steal a phone than like that.”

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A man in his twenties has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after a woman was killed in a pedicab collision in the early hours of Sunday morning , July 10.

Luis Fernanado Balcazar-Soto, 24 (03.01.98), of Law Street, near the New Kent Road, was charged on Monday, July 11, with: • Causing death by dangerous driving • Cause serious injury dangerous driving • Cause death by driving a vehicle while unlicensed • Cause death by driving a vehicle while uninsured • Breach of restraining order He has not been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, despite a man being arrested on suspicion of that crime after the incident.

It comes after the victim, a woman in her twenties died in the collision, which took place at about 4.10 am on Sunday. The driver of the pedicab was also taken to hospital with a broken arm, police officers said.

A woman in her twenties who had been a passenger in the pedicab left just before the collision and was not hurt.

Balcazar-Soto was kept in custody to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on last Monday, July 11.

A spokesperson for the police said:

“Detectives are investigating an attempted robbery in Southwark Park. Police were called at approximately shortly before 14:50hrs on Saturday, 2 July after a man in his 40s reported that a group of about 4-5 men demanded his phone and one of

the men threatened him with a knife.

“The man was not physically harmed and nothing was taken. The group of men then made off in the direction of Gomm Road. Any witnesses should call 101 and give reference 4274/02 July.”

In his retirement letter to Bishop of Southwark Christopher Chessun, the Dean said: “There is a great deal I can do in a year. Be assured, I won’t coast towards retirement. It will be heartbreaking leaving but the time is right and I am sure you will find somebody wonderful to serve this wonderful community.”

Very Revd Nunn has been Dean or acting Dean since 2010. He came to the Cathedral in September 1999 as Sub Dean and Precentor and so will have served the Cathedral for 24 years

when he stands down on July 4 2023.

He has brought his considerable gifts to the service of the Cathedral and wider Church with priestly devotion, humour, and a passion for generous and including orthodoxy.

“As Dean he has built a hospitable and engaged community of prayer at the Cathedral, and as senior priest of the Diocese he has engaged with different civic bodies in a way that has earned their respect and ensured

that the Church of England is seen as a credible partner in different walks of life.

“Andrew will be greatly missed by colleagues in the Cathedral, the Diocese of Southwark and on General Synod. I have accepted his notice to retire with a sad heart, but Andrew is assured of my prayers and thanks for all that he has done and will continue to do over the coming year until his retirement.”

‘we’ve had eight years of fire safety concerns on estate’ Leaseholder Peter Kokkinos highlights the problem with the doors

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk People living in a Bermondsey council estate have spoken of their fear and frustration at having been living in an unsafe block for years.

Southwark Council had fire doors installed at Bardell House and Wade

House on the Dickens Estate in 2014. But one man, Peter Kokkinos, a leaseholder in his seventies at Bardell House, refused to let the council do the works because he said that other doors were being installed with gaps between the doors and the frames filled with what he said was inappropriate material.

The council took Mr Kokkinos to court in 2015 to get the doors installed. He eventually settled out of court to pay

Southwark £3,500 - including the cost of the door - in return for getting his fire door installed by a builder of his choosing, but now says he regrets that decision.

Several other inspections were carried out in the years to come, and the doors were deemed “defective”, according to the council. The original contractor came back to do the remedial work at their own cost in 2019.

But a 2021 report carried out by Arnold Tarling, an independent surveyor, after the 2019 remedial work, found that the fire doors were still “defectively installed”. Mr Tarling alleges: “Mr Kokkinos and other tenants have been put at unacceptable risk…

The installation is completely useless.

There has been no fire protection to the protected fire escape route for six-seven years.”

Contractors have been back on site since late May, and the council said their work would be inspected by independent fire safety consultants.

Several other leaseholders have got money back from the council for the cost of the installation. One, Alan Bugg, in Wade House, said his ordeal had been “unbelievable”, adding that he was “disgusted” with the way he and other residents had been treated.

Mr Bugg claims a discovery he and other residents made in his doorframe in March 2022 had “summed up” the way works had been carried out. “We were looking through what they’d filled it with and first of all we saw these thin pieces of wood with gaps in between. Then we came across a scourer, like you’d do the washing up with. So that’s what I’ve been

living with.”

Ilona Wade, a member of the estate’s tenants’ and residents’ association, said: “I feel unsafe, but also I am on the TRA and I feel that I’ve got a duty to make everyone safe. But actually mostly I’m frustrated, it’s so hard to get the council to answer questions.”

Meanwhile Mr Kokkinos said that his health had been affected by his campaign on the fire doors. “I feel exhausted, I feel worn out… I even collapsed on the street when I was out walking one time.”

Councillor Darren Merrill, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “We carry out regular and thorough fire safety checks on all our buildings and any works required are inspected and signed off. The fire doors installed by our contractor were found to be defective, which needed to be addressed. We asked the original contractor to fix the problem, at their cost, not charged to residents, which they were happy to do.

“The works will follow the recommendations of IFC, an independent fire safety consultancy, overseen and monitored by them and the council to ensure that the doors are correctly installed and effective against fire.”

Rotherhithe student’s harrowing escape from Taliban Raza Khan

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk AN Afghan student at a Southwark university escaped torture by the Taliban with his grandfather to return to his Rotherhithe home, in a daring and harrowing escape last year.

But tragically Abid Raza Khan, 22, lost contact with his parents when the Taliban took over his home country in 2021 and was separated from his wife, whom he is now trying to bring over to the UK. Mr Raza Khan began studying at London South Bank University in 2020, living in Rotherhithe. He went back to

Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan, to marry his fiancee in May 2021.

But shortly afterwards the US and its allies, including the UK, withdrew from the country after twenty years, leaving the Taliban to take over again. A panic ensued as many people rushed to leave the country to flee the new, repressive regime.

Mr Raza Khan managed to get his wife on a flight out to Dubai, but lost contact with his parents. He booked himself on a flight out of Kabul airport on August 16, the day after the Taliban took Kabul. When he showed up at the airport, US soldiers told him to come back the next day. He tried the next day, and the day after that, but with no luck.

At the same time, he was helping a friend with dual nationality with

getting out of the country. But when Mr Raza Khan went home to his grandparents’ house after failing to get a flight out, Taliban thugs came round to torture him, claiming he was a foreign spy for helping his friend.

“They tortured me, they hit me, they threatened me,” Mr Raza Khan said. “I really hurt my back. They thought I was helping a spy. I was so injured.”

The Taliban men also had Mr Raza Khan’s grandfather locked in a separate room. Amazingly, he managed to get out by smashing a window and helped his grandson to escape as well.

They fled to a friend’s house, who patched Mr Raza Khan up. They stayed in the friend’s house for three days until August 24. Mr Raza Khan then managed to escape the capital by

getting an eighteen-hour bus, followed by a taxi, to the Uzbekistan border. The bus was stopped and searched en route by guards.

He made it to Tashkent, the Uzbek capital, where he was hospitalised for several days. After getting out, he went to Moscow, before eventually flying to the UK in September, resettling in Rotherhithe, and going back to studying at LSBU. Mr Raza Khan still does not know where his parents are. His grandparents have moved to Jalalabad, a city eighty miles south-east of Kabul.

He said he was very grateful to them for their help.

“When my grandpa rescued me, I was totally damaged, I didn’t have any power in my body. My grandpa told me

you have to do it. My grandpa was very brave… they gave me hope.”

Mr Raza Khan is now in the process of bringing his wife to the UK from Dubai, subject to Home Office clearance, and hopes to have her in London in a couple of months.

Mr Raza Khan was recently invited to speak at a service at Bacon’s College, a school in Rotherhithe, reported on page 6 of this week’s edition. The theme of the service was ‘peace’.

He told the young students that he thought he was alone when he came back to Rotherhithe, but “when I came here, I gained more love, respect, encouragement.” He added that his parents had told him “don’t judge.

Always love each other. Always respect each other.”

Medics improve pregnancy care in Sierra Leone DOCTORS AND midwives from Guy’s and St Thomas’ are helping to improve healthcare for pregnant women and newborn babies in Sierra Leone.

A team of seven obstetricians, midwives and researchers from Guy’s and St Thomas’, travelled to Sierra Leone to set up lifesaving projects to improve maternal and neonatal healthcare.

Sierra Leone is one of the most dangerous places in the world to give birth. One in every 17 women will die during pregnancy or childbirth. The country lacks adequate medical equipment and healthcare staff so many women experience delays in receiving lifesaving care.

The team are working with clinicians, community leaders and policy makers in Sierra Leone to understand and reduce the barriers pregnant women face when accessing healthcare.

The project is a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Global Health Research Group initiative. It is run in partnership with King’s College London and the University of Sierra Leone, with support from the country’s National Midwifery School and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.

research capacity on maternal health in Sierra Leone by supporting three local PhD students and more than 20 early career researchers.

Professor Andrew Shennan, consultant obstetrician at Guy’s and St Thomas’, who is leading the project, said: “Becoming pregnant in Sierra Leone can be life-threatening.

Many communities live in rural areas where there is a shortage of basic medical supplies, pregnancy monitoring equipment and healthcare workers. This means that women with anything but the most straightforward pregnancies could be in danger. Pregnant teenagers also face discrimination and often don’t seek medical care due to fear.

“It’s very important to us that we work with women and communities in Sierra Leone and that they’re involved in decisions about their care. Every woman and child no matter where they live deserves to have access to life-saving healthcare.”

The team were in Sierra Leone for two weeks from 26 March to 8 April.

They travelled to Freetown, the capital and largest city, and visited health centres, community groups and local hospitals.

They are going back to Sierra Leone in the summer and have been three times since September last year. The project is funded by the NIHR and will run until 2024.

Year Five at Boutcher school have made extremely good progress in their artwork under the tutelage of local artist Ed Gray. After participating in ‘A Bermondsey Progress: Boutcher School 150th Anniversary Art Project’ they now have an exhibition of work that shows a maturity way beyond their years, writes Michael Holland.

Gray is one of London’s leading visual artists of the highways and byways of our great capital, but more so of our wonderfully diverse people, so he is perfect for teaching the young of Southwark about their area’s history and how to depict it in a painting.

I asked how the project came about: ‘I wrote to several local schools to see if any were interested in working with me on a project. Eilidh Verhoeven, the Head at Boutcher, had been to one of my exhibitions so she was familiar with my work and she asked me to create a project to celebrate the school’s anniversary.’

The project, funded by the Dyers Guild, aimed to make narrative artwork that showed life in and around the area of the school through the last 150 years. ‘I wanted to show the progression of an idea from intention to inspiration through research, sketches, drawings, composition and

The performances of Mary Roscoe as the Queen and Condou in the science teacher role do have their moments. Roscoe captures the voice and tone of the Queen well and takes some comic liberties without verging on caricature. Condou’s neurotic and pedantic Derek Jones is earnest in

his republicanism and socialist views but is disappointingly watered down with an apologist u-turn at the end.

And it is towards the end where the play struggles most. In the programme notes Goldsmith admits that for years he “hadn’t got a clue as to how to end the story” and this is probably the reason why. The pace

slows up and we are left just looking for a way out. Although billed as a comedy the laughs are hard to come by. There are a couple of satirical lines that catch a laugh but this inconceivable premise needs more pace and sharper wit to really get things going.

When they try to leave they find out that they have been locked in and a bomb scare means that they are likely to be in there for a while whilst security staff work on nullifying the terrorist threat.

The set up lends itself to farce and humour: the forced cooperation and the close proximity of two people whose views and lives are worlds apart. Their differences are the primary content of the discussions between the two, highlighting their experiences and debating their opinions. It’s in conversation about constitutional monarchies and Princess Diana where you feel the drama is going to ramp up and catch light, however, aided with Anthony Biggs direction, it stays rather

Writer John Goldsmith has been working for decades, having several novels published and writing for film and television since the late 80s, but it is only now he has penned a piece for the stage. The Throne, an unlikely encounter which throws together Her Majesty the Queen with a staunch republican science teacher, writes Christopher Peacock.

one term, learning about changes in working life, plus social and political changes.

‘We spent some time discussing the women’s rights and the suffragette movement once we discovered an incident of sabotage that occurred when the school was used as a polling station in 1909,’ he said excitedly, pointing out several paintings in the exhibition depicting this event. All by girls, who had obviously enjoyed this tale of the early battle for equality.

As to the art side of the project, Ed emphasised that ‘I had to get across that drawing from observation is the basis of making art and that it takes time to create a story within a painting, that their local area is a treasure chest of stories to create art from and that they are great at making art.’

Did you notice a difference between their ‘before’ and ‘after’ artistic skills?

‘Absolutely. Pupils missed so much art during the pandemic so now struggle with confidence in problem-solving and creative thinking, which are such important life skills. Physically, they are less able to draw and paint because they are lacking those skills.

These pupils from Boutcher learnt so much about painting and drawing and creative thinking in the limited time we had.’

‘Our 10-point plan to tackle the cost of living crisis

ast week I launched our plan to support Southwark residents through the cost of living crisis.

While nationally the Conservative Party disintegrated into chaos, locally Labour set out the practical action we will take to help our community as people face souring energy and food bills.

First and foremost our Southwark tenpoint plan will put money in the pockets of those who need it most, through our new £5m Cost of Living Fund. This will provide direct help for thousands of local people who are unable to make ends meet. That financial support will be backed up with continued investment in free independent advices services. We invest over £1m a year in these services in Southwark, including the Citizens Advice Bureau and Southwark Law Centre.

These vital services in turn help local people draw down over £8 million a year in extra financial support. When I visited Southwark Citizens Advice last week I heard about the amazing work they do, supporting over 20,000 people every year. So I’m delighted to say the kinds of support they provide will continue to be available for Southwark residents.

Our plan will also make sure that everyone in our borough has access to food that they can afford. Working with local business, markets and community

Southwark Council leader groups to ensure food is affordable for all.

Backed by our continued commitment to provide free healthy school meals for all primary and nursery school children, and to provide free meals for children most in need during the holidays too.

We will also tackle the root causes of this crisis. We will provide access to more good quality, well paid jobs. The cost of living crisis is hitting British people harder than those in other wealthy nations precisely because successive Conservative and Liberal Democrat governments have failed to grow an economy that benefits most people.

Austerity and Brexit have made the last decade the worst our country has seen for wages since the Napoleonic wars. Yet the Conservatives still have no plan to turn round this failure. Instead they seem determined to level down London, cutting funding for our city, including cuts to our vital public transport.

In contrast, our Southwark Labour plan will create more jobs that pay the London Living Wage. We will create more green jobs and grow the brilliant life sciences industries around our world leading hospital. We will create more apprenticeship and training opportunities and provide extra support to get a job for those who face the most barriers.

We will also build thousands more council homes, housing association social

rent homes and hundreds of homes at low rents for key workers so more Southwark residents can have a genuinely affordable home.

Together these actions and the others we have set out in our ten-point plan provide a real plan to tackle the issues that are leaving so many people struggling to make ends meet.

In contrast, the Government is in denial about the causes of this crisis, which go back to the beginning of austerity and the policies successive Conservative and Liberal Democrat governments have imposed on our country, and in denial about the scale of intervention needed to address it today.

This was shown as clear as day when the Conservatives only accepted the need for a windfall tax on the big energy companies’ soaring profits after weeks of pressure from the Labour Party. For months Tory minsters claimed this was the wrong thing to do, only giving in to Labour’s demands when they realised how popular this was with the public.

Yet even then it was clear they just don’t get it, when it was revealed their plan is to distribute the proceeds in a way which most benefits the owners of multiple homes, rather than those who need it most. They just don’t understand the scale of the financial hurt facing households this year.

There is so much government could be doing, such as like reversing the £20 cut to Universal Credit, the cruel bedroom tax and the two-child benefits limit which have plunged millions of people into poverty. Or better still bring forward an actual plan to grow our economy and create more good quality jobs, rather than diverting every pound of government money they can to prop up their marginal seats.

Nationally, the Labour Party has a plan.

We would cut VAT on home energy bills, insulate millions of homes, cut business rates for smaller enterprise and use public spending to buy British. Only the Labour Party can be trusted to deliver policies that will really help families and pensioners alike.

As a Labour council, we have set out the action we will take to support thousands of our residents who need it the most.

Just imagine how much more we could achieve if our budgets hadn’t been slashed by two thirds as part of Liberal Democrat and Conservative austerity.

As the Conservatives shuffle the deckchair on the titanic, it’s time for our country to demand the real change we need. It’s time for a general election and a Labour government.

Boris Johnson should leave office immediately

oris Johnson has been one of the worst Prime Ministers that residents of Southwark and Lambeth have ever had to endure.

And it’s a crowded field, from Margaret Thatcher’s decimation of our public services, through to David Cameron’s austerity and Theresa May’s botched approach to Brexit, Conservative Prime Ministers have successively failed our communities.

While local residents followed the law during the Covid-19 lockdowns in order to protect our families, friends and neighbours, Boris Johnson and the Conservatives held a series of drunken parties at 10 Downing Street.

But we must be clear, that these failings are not only the responsibility of one man.

The Conservative ministers now vying to replace him, have for months helped to prop him up and keep him in office.

They have all defended him, while the cost-of-living crisis has taken hold in our country, inflation has spiralled and people battle on a daily basis with the backlogs in the Passport Office, the DVLA and the courts.

They backed him when he was trying to change the rules so that Owen Patterson could avoid the consequences of his rule breaking, when he was warned that there was an allegation of child abuse against the former Conservative MP for Wakefield, but no action was taken to

investigate, when the Chancellor’s wife was found to have used her non-dom status to avoid paying millions of pounds in Tax, and they backed him when he appointed Chris Pincher, a man known for a track record of unacceptable behaviour, to a position in the whips office, responsible for MPs welfare.

It has always been clear who Boris Johnson is, and those who have protected him and kept him in power bear the responsibility for the damage he has done to trust and confidence in government, and to communities across the country who are suffering the impact of his policies.

Although he was a former Mayor of London and a current London MP, since becoming Prime Minister

Boris Johnson’s actions have taken a distinctly anti-London turn. He and his Conservative ministers have cut funding to our schools and local councils, cut Universal Credit for families on lower incomes and left us with huge NHS waiting lists.

This week, Labour MPs will vote in favour of a motion of no confidence in Boris Johnson. It is not acceptable that a man who has done such damage should remain in power for a further eight weeks, he should leave office immediately.

It will be interesting to see how the divided and incompetent Conservative MPs, and especially those who defended Boris Johnson but now want to replace him choose to vote.

MP brave to be open about drink problem

N

eil Coyle’s admission this week that he has given up alcohol and sought treatment for his problem drinking is admirable and should be commended.

There is a lot of chatter these days about men not talking enough about their problems, and keeping

things to themselves - so much so that it can sometimes seem that, ironically, we talk about little else.

But it is very brave of the Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP to speak so openly about the fairly

shocking extent of his drinking problem and the various reasons for it. A minimum of twelve pints per night, five days a week is probably unimaginable for most people.

And yet, as he said himself, his drinking started slowly and eventually snowballed to where it

was earlier this year. Drinking problems rarely appear out of nowhere, but often creep up slowly on people. Coyle’s public admission may be of help to people who are currently sliding down that slippery slope.

It’s also refreshing for an MP to own up to something. The current government, and outgoing

PM Boris Johnson in particular, appear to be completely incapable of being straight in their

public statements, let alone giving sincere apologies for the many scandals that have rocked the administration in recent months.

Of course, Coyle has not been a Labour MP for months now; aside from damaging his health,

drinking may also have torpedoed Coyle’s political career. In his statement, he admitted what had long been suspected - that alcohol played a part in the incident in February where he allegedly used racist language in a conversation with a Westminster political reporter, for which he has apologised.

As Coyle himself said, alcohol does not excuse bad behaviour, and the Labour inquiry into the

incident is still going on five months after the incident, although is is unclear why it is taking so long.

Asked for an update this week, a Labour spokesperson said “we don’t give a running commentary on investigations” - the kind of evasive non-answer that fuels cynicism about politics.

Whether or not Coyle gets the whip back is anyone’s guess. But his health is ultimately more

important. We wish him all the best for continued sobriety.

History In our world of 24-hour rolling news channels and the instantaneous news bulletins sent direct to our mobile phones, it is easy for us to keep up with current affairs, writes Neil Crossfield...

In the 20th century, we had radio and television news to keep us informed.

However, in earlier times, access to information was more restricted and many would receive news in the form of various types of street literature. These could be official proclamations posted in public spaces, but the most common form of this literature was the broadside ballad, cheaply produced single sheets of paper which were sold on the streets for a penny or half penny. Quickly created in the wake of an important event, they usually featured a simple woodcut print, some descriptive text and a few lines of hastily written verse. Printers then employed ‘hawkers’ to sell these around the streets of London, who would often sing the verses to advertise the broadside ballad. At this point, literacy rates among the working classes were low, so the ballad was an important means of disseminating news to London’s citizens.

The ephemeral nature of these ballads meant that much of this street literature was lost, but luckily, some collectors recognised their importance and created archives of those that survived.

One particularly gruesome ballad from 1860 is titled, The Walworth Tragedy.

This told the sad tale of the murder of four people in Manor Place, Walworth on 31 July 1860. The murderer was William Geoffrey Youngman, who had brutally slain his mother Elizabeth Youngman age 47, his two brothers Thomas Neale Youngman, age 12, Charles Rayson Youngman, age 7 and his fiancée, Mary Wells Streeter, age 28.

Youngman had been born on 9 July 1835 to John and Elizabeth Youngman.

Mary had been born in Wadhurst, Sussex, not far from Tunbridge Wells and had first met Youngman when they were both in service of a ‘gentleman’ called Hadley in Lewisham around 1856. It does not appear that any romantic relationships were formed between them here. In the subsequent years, Youngman had spent a period in prison for stealing silver from his employer.

Letters produced at the Old Bailey trial show that Youngman and Mary had rekindled their friendship around 18 June 1860. The fifteen letters which Youngman had sent to Mary had been seized by the police from a locked writing desk at her father’s house in Wadhurst.

Beside protestations of love and promises of a happy future by the sea in Brighton, many of the letters exhibited what would today be viewed as coercive behaviour.

The relationship moved fast as the pair planned to get married at St Martins-inthe Fields on Saturday 11 August and the thirds banns for this were read on 29 July, just two days before the murder.

Youngman pressured Mary to take out an insurance policy on her own life. He asked her to falsely state that there had been no illnesses within her family, even though her sister had died from T.B. just a year before. When she expressed hesitancy, saying that her parents were against her taking out the policy, he exerted emotional pressure on her by writing that ‘he would never forgive her if she didn’t do it’ and that she would ‘never find anyone to love you so again’.

We may never know her motives for going through with this, but on the 24th of July she went to the Argus Insurance Company, near the Bank of England.

Here she was examined by the medical officer before a life insurance policy, which would pay out £100 in the event of her death was issued. The quarterly insurance premium of 10 shillings and 1d was paid for by Mary herself. With hindsight, it is difficult to understand why Mary went along with this plan.

Why didn’t she become suspicious when Youngman asked for her to burn the letters he had sent, in which he had told her to take out the policy?

Just weeks before the murder, the couple had visited the Green Dragon

Pub in Bermondsey Street, which was run by Edward Spice, a friend of her father. He had taken an instant dislike to Youngman and had taken Mary aside and told her, ‘I would sooner see you take a rope and hang yourself in the skittle ground than to marry a man like that’.

Despite this warning and the knowledge that her parents had some concerns, Mary apparently dismissed them as on 30 July 1860, Mary caught the train from Wadhurst to London Bridge, arriving at around 10:30 on the morning, little knowing that she had only hours to live.

After meeting his mother, it is believed that the couple went to the theatre together that evening, returning to Manor Place at around 11pm. As an unmarried woman, Mary shared a bedroom with his mother and younger brother.

Number 16 Manor Place was a threestory building located on the street which led from the Walworth Road to the Royal Surrey Zoological Gardens. The landlord, James Bevan lived on the ground floor, Phillip Beard, his wife and son lived on the first floor, while John Youngman lived with his wife and two young sons on the top floor. William Youngman had joined his parents the previous week and it was to here that he had brought his young fiancée.

As usual, Youngman senior had left for work at 5:20am. At around 5:50am, the inhabitants of the house were awoken by a commotion in the rooms above. Mr Beard went to investigate and was confronted by a dreadful scene. Calling ‘Murder’, he was joined by Bevan the landlord who saw Youngman standing on the stairs

between the first and second floors. He cried out, ‘Mr Beard, my mother has done all this, she has murdered my sweetheart and my two little brothers, and, in selfdefence, I believe I have murdered her’.

A surgeon and the police were summoned. Constable John Varney arrived on the scene and observed the bodies of Mary Streeter and Elizabeth and Thomas Youngman on the landing.

The whole area was covered in blood, all three victims throats had been cut, in addition to other stab wounds. Thomas had made efforts to defend himself evidenced by wounds found on his hands which suggest that he had grabbed the knife. The younger brother, Charles was found lying on the bed in the living room, his throat also cut.

Youngman slaughtered his fiancee, his two brothers and his mother - then blamed his mother for the killings

said, ‘oh policeman, here is a sight; what shall I do?’. Varney simply told him to get dressed, noticing that the wristband of his shirt was hanging down. Shortly after, Inspector James Dann, P division, arrived at Manor Place to be greeted by a bloodstained scene. Dann observed bloody footprints on the floor which he surmised belonged to Youngman. A long knife with a broken tip was found which was soon established to be the murder weapon. As he was arrested, Youngman continue to blame his mother for the murders.

The trial was held at the Old Bailey on 16 August 1860. Youngman had attempted to blame his actions on insanity, claiming that ‘lunacy’ ran in his family. His defence team revealed that his maternal grandmother had died in Peckham Lunatic Asylum, an uncle of

his father had died in Norwich Thorpe Asylum and that his own father had been admitted to asylums during his life.

His lawyers suggested that Youngman truly loved Mary and that taking out the insurance policy was a prudent measure considering her sister had died of TB. This defence was dismissed at the trial as prosecutors argued that none of the letters nor his subsequent behaviour had suggested any sign of mental incapacity.

The Judge, Justice Williams summed up the case and stated that even if Youngman’s mother had killed the others, she could have been easily overpowered by the young man, who would not have had to kill her. The jury took only twenty minutes to give a verdict of ‘guilty’.

Disregarding Youngman’s pleas of ‘I am not guilty’, the judge donned his black cap

and pronounced a sentence of death.

Youngman had been incarcerated at Horsemonger Road Gaol to await his appointment with the hangman.

Reports show that while imprisoned, he had generally behaved himself but had once tried to escape and commit suicide by throwing himself over a staircase, only to be thwarted by prison warders.

Youngman continued to profess his innocence, blaming his mother for the murders. While he showed no remorse about his victims, he had become angry when he talked about the comments made by Edward Spice, the publican, and had stated, ‘I am not a murderer, but if I had this man Spice here, I would strike his head off’. Perhaps this indicates some form of narcissism in Youngman’s temperament as he seems more upset

by a personal slight against his character than the accusations that he had murdered four people for the sake of the relatively small sum of £100. Newspapers also reported that in conversation Youngman had stated that he ‘objected to capital punishment on principle’.

Youngman was executed on the roof of Horsemonger Road Gaol on the morning of 4 September 1860, just 36 days after he committed the murders. Such was the interest in these murders, crowds began to gather outside the gaol at 8pm the previous evening, with people eager to get a prime spot. It was estimated that upwards of 20,000 people came to witness the execution. Away from the hoi-polloi, ‘respectable’ visitors had paid anything from 5 shillings to a sovereign so that they could watch the hanging from the window of the houses opposite the gaol. Youngman had said his farewells to his family the previous day. After a good night’s sleep, he had breakfasted on cocoa and bread and butter. After thanking the governor, warders and the prison chaplain, Reverend Jessop for their kindness, he was led to the gallows shortly before 9am. The chaplain urged him to make a last-minute confession and ‘not go out of the world with a lie in his mouth’. Defiant to the end, Youngman said that he ‘would be telling a lie if he were to admit that he had committed the crime’. After shaking hands with the hangman, his legs were bound, a hood placed over his head and the noose

placed around his neck. The lever was pulled, the trap opened, and death was instantaneous. This remains one of the darkest crimes in Walworth’s history and such was the notoriety of this crime, in March 1901, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, wrote a piece in The Strand Magazine entitled The Holocaust of Manor Place, some 40 years after the murders.

If you would like to hear the broadside ballad about the Walworth Tragedy sung as it would have been 160 years ago, you may wish to attend the ‘Walworth’s History Through Song’ concert being held on Friday 29 July at St Peter’s, Walworth at 7:30pm. Performed by four fantastic local performers, this free concert will feature songs and music either written about or performed in Walworth over the centuries. Beside broadside ballads, you will hear songs which were last heard at the Royal Surrey Zoological Gardens in the mid-nineteenth century, as well as some catchy music hall songs from the 1920s. sport@southwarknews.co.uk ENGLAND FRINGE Test opener Rory Burns led a strong Surrey response to Yorkshire’s firstinnings 521 with a largely unruffled 94 not out on day two at Scarborough this week.

A high-scoring LV= Insurance County Championship draw is already on the cards with two days remaining, after Adam Lyth and Jonny Tattersall recorded Yorkshire’s first-ever triple century partnership for the sixth wicket in first-class cricket.

Lyth made 183 off 306 balls and unbeaten Tattersall a career best 180 off 344 before Burns’ effort came off 166 balls in Surrey’s 191 for one from 53 overs.

After a 40-minute rain delay started the day, Lyth and Tattersall advanced their overnight partnership of 239 to 305 during the second morning, which Yorkshire began on 364 for five and reached lunch at 489 for seven.

Lyth, who posted his highest score in a Championship home game, fell alongside Dom Bess for 29 before lunch.

Lyth pulled Conor McKerr to deep square-leg before Bess was bowled by the part-time off-spin of Will Jacks.

While Lyth led the way on day one in making 152, Tattersall played the more notable innings on day two as he added 76 to his overnight 104.

The pair broke the previous Yorkshire sixth-wicket record of 296, also involving Lyth with help from Adil Rashid against Lancashire at Old Trafford in 2014.

Tattersall was particularly strong through the legside and would have hoped for a maiden double century.

Unfortunately for the 27-year-old, the loss of three quick wickets after lunch - all to Tom Lawes, who finished with four for 51 from 13.2 overs - kiboshed those hopes.

Jordan Thompson was lbw, Steve Patterson caught behind cutting and Shannon Gabriel bowled for a golden duck. The latter two fell to successive deliveries.

Surrey started their reply with 53 overs remaining in the day and reached tea at 80 without loss from 18.

After West Indian quick Gabriel’s golden duck, he sent down 10 no balls across two four-over spells, including getting Burns caught at slip driving with one of them on 72 after tea.

Having said that, he was far from the only one to have issues with no balls.

Surrey bowled 18, conceding 36 runs.

Surrey respond strongly after Yorkshire first

Yorkshire’s England bowler Matthew Fisher is at Scarborough this week as he continues his recovery from a back stress fracture suffered in the first game at Gloucestershire in mid-April.

Fisher has been undertaking fielding drills over the last couple of days.

By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH TRAVELLED to Chipstead Coulsdon & Walcountians last weekend, and for the second time in three weeks they had much the better of their match in Division 1 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship, but were unable to separate the last pair and had to settle for a winning draw.

Six of the Dulwich wickets had fallen to spin, so it was no surprise that Brown was on as early as the eighth over. He then proceeded to bowl unchanged for the rest of the innings, to finish with 6-60 off 24 overs, his second haul of five or more wickets this season.

Chipstead were still seemingly well placed at tea on 57-2 after 18 overs, but they lost wickets at regular intervals afterwards as three from Brown and two from Crowley (2-21 off seven) reduced them to 151-7 after 40 overs. Simon Harwood took the eighth wicket at 160 in the 43rd over and Brown got the ninth at 175 in the 48th. Dulwich therefore had

7.4 overs to get the last wicket. But the last pair held out successfully, with six maidens and only one scoring shot coming in those overs to finish on 177-9 after 55.

Dulwich once again took full bonus points and claimed 14 from the match. But this was not enough to stop them dropping back to bottom place as they were overtaken by Stoke D’Abernon who secured a surprise win over leaders Cranleigh.

Nonetheless, Dulwich are still only six points behind Valley End, who are eighth. Coincidentally Stoke provide Dulwich’s opponents this weekend in a crucial contest between the bottom two.

By Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk WALWORTH JUNIOR rower Jamie Rimmer dominated the opposition to win the first single scull race at Kingston Regatta last weekend.

Jamie, 14, has been rowing for just one year but followed up his success at the Italian National Indoor Junior Championships in May with another impressive victory.

As recently as a month ago, Jamie had only ever been in a single boat three times but thanks to his school, St Thomas the Apostle in Peckham, allowing him to leave a few minutes early each day, he has been travelling to the Team Keane Rowing Club, by the Thames in Brentford, to get invaluable water practice.

“Single boats are notoriously difficult to row,” Jamie said. “They are so finely balanced. One mistake and you’re in the water – swimming. It takes a lot of experience to get the balance right.”

The Kingston Regatta is a longestablished event and had over 400 crews competing over two days in more than 320 races. Kingston is one of the few events which has a class for J13 and J12 rowers.

Competitive rowing normally only starts at J14s.

Jamie said: “Kingston was where I had my first race, a year ago. We raced in a coxed four boat and having won our heat we were narrowly beaten in the final. I know the whole crew took it really badly, we were terribly disappointed.

“Kingston is a great event. It’s very wellorganised and with its lawned river-side enclosure opposite the town centre it’s like a mini-Henley. There’s a great atmosphere.”

Not only does Kingston introduce young crews to racing, but the racing can also be extremely competitive. For many crews, it’s the last opportunity before the British Rowing National Junior Championships, which take place this weekend from Friday,

Jamie had to row through four rounds to win his event. All three of his last opponents had come to Kingston expecting to win.

In the opening round, Jamie saw off a local Kingston rower, beating him by four-and-aquarter lengths. In the quarter-finals, Jamie took on a strong boy from Molesey, one of the oldest and most successful boat clubs along the Thames.

There was another Molesey rower to face in the semi-finals. “The Molesey boy was not only very strong physically but was also technically very strong,” Jamie said.

“He beat me away at the start, but it didn’t take me long to be able to power up and pass him. At this point he must have had quite a shock as I don’t think he had ever been challenged before. When he tried to re-apply his power, he overdid it and capsized.”

Jamie had little chance to rest before the final, against a competitor from Falcon Rowing Club in Oxford.

His opponent was quickly away but it wasn’t long before Jamie was alongside

him and passing him. The race was at a strong pace throughout and when the Oxford rower tried to increase his speed to get back on terms, Jamie was ready for him and increased his own pace to maintain his advantage, crossing the line two-andthree-quarter lengths in front.

“I cannot tell you how delighted and relieved I was to win,” Jamie said. “The racing was so nerve-racking. I knew that if I was to have any chance at the National Juniors on Friday, I had to win this event.

“I still have it all to do in the Nationals.

Many of the opposition in Nottingham will be public school boys and they are able to row six days a week, sometimes twice a day. That water experience will be their huge advantage.

“I will be rowing in the coxed fours and in a single scull boat. I really hope I’ll be able to show my best and do well.

“I’ve had an amazing first season in rowing and to be able to do well at the National Championships would put the icing on the cake.

“I’m really nervous – but I can’t wait for Friday to come.”

Dulwich had glimmers as the first half went on. Nana Owusu stung the palms of the Sutton trialist goalkeeper from distance and Sam Deadfield had a neat, cross-goal finish ruled out for offside.

The Champion Hill crowd were seeing some of the clubs’ new signings in action for the first time, but ultimately in the first half the home side struggled to get the front three involved against well-drilled opposition.

Rose experiments as League Two U’s show their class

Sutton arrived in east Dulwich off the back of a fantastic season after they finished just outside the play-off places in their first-ever campaign in the fourth tier.

The Hamlet started with a team of mixed experience, some who would

The home side were a different proposition in the second half. Ronnie Vint was solid at the back, Jamie Splatt brought a quality range of passing to the midfield and Danny Mills added composure up front.

In the 50th minute the changes almost paid off. Michael Timlin received the ball on the left and hung in a looping cross to the back post which Mills was there to meet it but his header was tipped over the bar.

The U’s then make their changes, including the introduction of former

Arsenal man Craig Eastmond. This led to the game losing its shape, with both teams battling hard in the middle of the pitch to no avail.

However, Hamlet nearly finished on a high as Mills headed down a cross to new signing Kreshnic Krasniqi, but he took one too many touches in the box and a good chance fizzled out.

Rose won’t be too disheartened by the final score-line. The manager got the chance to look at nearly all his squad and improve the team’s fitness as they continued preparations for 2022-23.

Dulwich Hamlet’s next fixture is against Arsenal under-23’s at home this Saturday (July 16). Kick-off is 3pm.

Burey belter sinks Dartford Millwall down the Darts to seal important pre-season win

While the Lions fielded two different teams in their first pre-season match against Crystal Palace, they split their squad in half on Tuesday afternoon for games against Bromley and Dartford.

Benik Afobe has scored three goals in his last two games for the Lions Road, saw Millwall beat the Ravens 5-0 thanks to a brace from George Evans and goals from Mason Bennett and Scott Malone.

It set the rest of the squad a challenge to get their first win of pre-season when they made the trip to Kent later that evening, and it didn’t take long for them to follow in the footsteps of their teammates.

On Saturday afternoon, Benik Afobe had just two chances against Crystal Palace and he scored both of them. On Tuesday evening, he had just one in the opening stages against Dartford, which was all he needed to put the Lions ahead after just 11 minutes.

It was a strange goal, one that would likely not be allowed to stand if VAR was involved. But there is no VAR in the Championship, nor in a pre-season friendly hosted by a National League South side.

on the edge of the penalty area after a crunching tackle, with referee Michael Ryan seemingly indicating that it was a foul. In the midst of the chaos, Tyler Burey picked up the ball outside of the box and played Afobe in down the right.

It was a simple goal for the striker, but one that needed a calm and composed finish.

There is, however, a risk of being too calm, something which Burey could’ve been accused of soon after the opener.

The forward got himself into a good position to double Millwall’s lead, but ultimately hesitated too much when he was through on goal, allowing Dartford to win the ball back in the nick of time.

After a couple of audacious efforts from Danny McNamara, the referee’s whistle called an end to the first half. So far so good for the Lions, but it could be better.

Burey was presented with another golden opportunity to grab his first goal of the game shortly after the break, but

once again, his hesitancy prevented him from getting his shot away and Dartford were able to clear.

If it was hesitancy that prevented Burey from scoring, it must’ve been some sort of divine intervention that stopped Tom Bradshaw from firing the ball over the line in the second half.

The striker had three chances to double Millwall’s lead inside the penalty area, but he fizzed the first two narrowly wide before seeing his third effort saved by the Dartford ‘keeper.

Perhaps this string of misses encouraged the Lions, or more specifically Burey, to take some more ruthless action in the final third of the game. On 68 minutes, the young forward’s patience finally paid off, as he waited for the perfect time to curl a stunning strike into the top right corner from 22 yards out.

It was a finish that wouldn’t have looked out of place in the Premier League. In

This time it was Jordan Ayew who popped up to slam a rebound effort past Bartosz Białkowski following an impressive save. But yet again, Afobe popped up to get the Lions back on level terms, converting Ryan Leonard’s pinpoint cross with a powerful header.

A new Millwall team reappeared after the break, but neither side was able to go ahead before the hour mark. Crystal Palace opted to make five substitutions, including Jake O’Brien, who managed to convert from a corner just seconds after coming onto the pitch.

Two more substitutes linked up to give the Eagles a two-goal advantage for the first time in the match, as Luke Plange set up Christian Benteke to give the hosts a 4-2 lead.

But Millwall were undeterred, and two of the club’s new signings managed to get them back on level terms with fifteen minutes to play.

The Lions travelled to Crystal Palace in their first pre-season fixture, but unlike most matches against the Eagles, there was little pressure on either side to get a result.

This was evident after just three minutes when Patrick Vieira’s side took the lead through Eberechi Eze. Millwall’s statuesque defending was explained by their lack of match fitness, although this rustiness soon evaporated when Benik Afobe equalised from a corner just two minutes later.

The frenetic start to the match slowly died down, but not before the hosts could take the lead again.

Charlie Cresswell joined on a seasonlong loan from Leeds United at the start of July, helping to fill the hole left by the departures of Alex Pearce and Daniel Ballard.

Cresswell, 19, is a regular for England’s under-21 side and has made five Premier League appearances so far in his career. But he only has one real aim for his time at The Den: to play regular football.

“I just want to play regular football, to be honest, I haven’t had that yet in my career,” the centre-back told the News.

“I want to play game on game and try to get as many as I can. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot on the journey, it’s not going

to be all smooth, I’ll have a few ups and downs, but it’s about how I pull through at the end of the season and what my attitude’s like. I’m hoping to maintain a steady level.”

Despite only playing six Championship games last season, Pearce, 33, played a crucial part in leading the team before his departure to AFC Wimbledon was confirmed earlier in the summer.

Shaun Hutchinson spent much of last season with the armband, and will now step up as club captain in Pearce’s absence. The centre-back told the News that he didn’t want to make wholesale changes in his new role “I think I naturally have to be myself, I’m not going to change too much,” Hutchinson, 31, explained.

“I know everyone has different

ways to be a captain, but I think a lot of my qualities are generally leadership qualities.

“I’m not looking to do a crazy amount of stuff off the pitch, I’d rather just concentrate on what’s taking place on the pitch. I think it’ll come naturally to me.

Hutchinson, like most of his teammates, has the same goal in mind for next season: to finish in the top six. The defender explained that manager Gary Rowett has been driving the team to improve every season, and that Millwall are now ready to make that next step.

“I think since the gaffer has come in, it’s been a big thing that we’re looking to build every season. We’ve been the best of the rest for a few seasons now and the next thing is bridging that gap to get ourselves in there.

“Gary (Rowett) is doing everything

that he can to achieve that, not only by bringing in signings that he thinks can help us, but there’ll also be things that he’s learned over the last couple of years that he can use to help improve us as well.

A big reason for Millwall’s success is their strong defensive record, something which the club has maintained for a number of seasons.

As well as his ambition of finishing in the top six, Hutchinson has set a personal target to help maintain the Lions’ impressive performances at the back.

“Ever since I came to the club, there’s always been a really solid defensive base there. We very rarely concede many goals. It’s something that’s been one of Millwall’s strong points, and hopefully we can be up there again with the defensive record.”

“If you go to every Championship team and say ‘you’ve got Millwall next week’, I bet they all sigh and say ‘oh, we’ve got big Millwall, what a tough side’. I wanted to be on the right end of that.

“With that comes expectation, because you have to perform and you have to put in that defensive shift, but I’ll enjoy it as well. It’s what I am, I’m a defender, and I’ll hopefully thrive on it.”

necessarily an easy decision for Cresswell. After all, this is the first loan of his career, as well as his first time moving down south.

The Preston-born defender had thought about asking Leeds to leave on loan in the past, but “never really took it to Marcelo Bielsa” because he “knew what he was like with the whole loan situation.”

“My dad and I waited for the right time to discuss with Leeds what would be best for me,” Cresswell explained.

“We came to the conclusion that the best thing for me would be to go out and play some games, which I’m delighted with to be honest.”

Cresswell worked under Bielsa, who implemented an infamous ‘murderball’ training session, throughout the Argentinian’s four-year spell at Leeds, as well as current manager Jesse Marsch.

However, the youngster admitted that Millwall boss Gary Rowett played a big part in convincing him to move to The Den, and gave an insight into what his first training sessions at the club have been like.

“The coaching staff were a big pullin as well. I spoke with Gary (Rowett) and his backroom staff, they all seemed really welcoming and they want to improve me.

“It’s been a while since I did a murderball session after Bielsa left in January! At Millwall, it’s your normal training session really, like standard possession drills and working on shape. We’ve had a lot of games too, which I’ve really enjoyed.

“The coaches are all really good, they help you with individual stuff and they’re really supportive. The sessions are about building the tactics and building the shape for the season.”

Despite achieving so much in such a short playing career so far, Cresswell wants to pace himself at Millwall, encouraging the Lions to take things one step at a time in order to achieve their goal of finishing in the top six.

“You’ve got to have high hopes for the season every time you go into a new year. Coming here, I want to push for the playoffs and most of the lads think the same.

“But you can’t look that far in the future, you have to look game by game.

By us looking too far, it’ll take us off our task.”

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett is pleased that the club have submitted a planning application for their new training ground.

The Lions first team currently train in their facilities on Calmont Road, Bromley, which they lease rather than own. The club’s youth academy, however, is based five miles north on Well Hall Road, Eltham.

The proposed training complex will combine the two sites into one, a plan that Rowett is keen to see materialise in the next two years.

“I think it’d be great to have that synergy between the two groups. It’s been difficult to achieve that when

you’re on different sites,” he told the News.

“It’s difficult for the staff, particularly in London, to head across there in the late afternoon or evening, it takes forever to get there.

For logistical purposes, it’ll add a bit more simplicity.”

The new training ground will also provide a major upgrade on Millwall’s current facilities, something which Rowett believes will help the Lions achieve their long-term goals.

“We also need it moving forward.

The club needs their own training site, the club needs to have those extra facilities that we’ve not managed to have in place, and I think that’ll be important.

“It’s a little bit away, but the fact that we’ve put a planning application in shows that we’re moving towards that becoming a reality.”

Sport Millwall make changes to backroom staff

Turner, 52, previously worked at Southend United, Crystal Palace, Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic in the same role, before joining the Lions in June 2018 after their first season back in the Championship.

Millwall’s club statement described him as “a pivotal part of the first-team management set-up under previous and current regimes”, adding that current firstchoice goalkeeper Bartosz Białkowski credited him as one of the main reasons behind his double Player of the Season win in 2019/20 and 2020/21.

The club have also announced that Andy Marshall will replace Turner as their new goalkeeping coach.

Page 29 in his 20-year playing career. After his retirement, he moved straight into coaching, becoming the goalkeeping coach at Aston Villa in 2014. After their relegation two years later, he joined Lee Bowyer’s Charlton, following him to Birmingham City when he was appointed as manager in 2021.

With Bowyer being dismissed earlier in the summer, Marshall also left St Andrew’s, opting to return to south London with Millwall ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

By Alex Jones alexj@southwarknews.co.uk THIS SUMMER is one of the biggest in Millwall’s recent history, and few people are more involved with the ongoing changes at The Den than Steve Kavanagh.

The Lions’ CEO has his finger on the pulse of all aspects of the club, from the first team to the academy to their commercial success. One area of significant importance is the new training ground, which is due to be built in West Kingsdown, Kent.

Last week, the club officially submitted their planning application to Sevenoaks District Council, a move which Kavanagh describes as “vital”.

“It gives us the platform to hopefully receive a positive response, that’s where the work’s gone into,” the Millwall CEO told the News.

“For the long-term future of the club, we

don’t own either of our existing sites where the first team or the academy train. As a result, it’s critically important that we get our own home that we own and that we can build.

“It’ll give us an opportunity to track the right players and give them the best location and facilities to prepare them for matchdays. That’s where the fans see the pinnacle of that work for 90 minutes every Saturday, but the preparation takes place on the training ground.

“That’s why it’s critical to have a location where we can have simple things. Where the youngsters can aspire to be in the first team because they can see them, they’re on the same site and they can witness the journey that they go through when they come in at nine-years-old to when they walk out as captain of this club.”

As well as funding the new facilities, Millwall are focused on rebuilding their first-team squad after a number of departures. The club have already broken their record transfer fee this summer, a

move which Kavanagh believes highlights the club’s ambition despite difficult circumstances.

“First and foremost, it’s an exceptionally difficult transfer market at the moment.

Clubs, including ourselves, have been impacted by Covid-19. We’ve still got the best part of £6 million in debt to pay off, but it was put around our neck as loans rather than grants to pay off HMRC, which it did.

“It’s left the vast majority of clubs hamstrung with big debts. That’s left its mark on the transfer market. League One and League Two clubs, if they’re going to sell one of their best players, want top dollar.

Premier League clubs are very rarely selling players down into the Championship, but if they do, they also want top dollar.

“The GBE (Governing Body Endorsement) rules for buying players from overseas, with the changes around Brexit, have made it extremely complicated for Championship clubs. The market in which we can go overseas has gotten smaller and that means we’re competing

with Premier League clubs, so again, prices go up.

“This is why you see very silly transfer fees being paid, which means you have to be very clear on what you want to achieve and focused on what you want to do. It’s competitive, and I like to think so far that we’ve shown some intent in that.

“All of us together have worked hard, because we knew that a big rebuild was needed this summer. We’ve worked hard to try and deliver that. We’ve now got the bulk of a squad which, on paper, is looking good. We know we’ve probably got to add a few more into that to make sure that we can deal with the cut and thrust of a very long Championship season.”

Tying down manager Gary Rowett to a new long-term contract is another key part of the club’s goals, and one which Kavanagh is pleased to have sorted so early in the window. He discussed some of the Millwall manager’s key mental attributes and explained what the process was in bringing him to Bermondsey just under three years

ago.

“When we went out and recruited Gary, we looked very carefully at what people’s personality traits are and who they are as an individual. Through that process, he was identified. We did psychological testing with all the applicants and with the senior management, so within that was a desire to get people who could work together.

“Gary was targeted for some of those reasons in the first place, and I think that togetherness, that understanding of each other, that willingness to work and pull in the same direction is key. It sounds simple but it doesn’t always exist.

“He’s got the right attributes, we knew that from the start. He’s delivered on the pitch, and it was important to get him committing his long-term future to what we’re trying to do. That’s continuing to move this club forward and put the foundations in place to keep building on the success that we’ve achieved in the last five years.”
