provided local authorities with £246m this financial year specifically to support schools in managing significant rises or falls in pupil numbers. This is an increase of £12m on the previous financial year.

“Our National Funding Formula (NFF) distributes overall funding to schools fairly, based on the needs of schools and their pupils.

“It is cost adjusted for area so that schools in more expensive areas, like Central London, attract higher funding per pupil than other parts of the country to reflect the higher costs they face.”

The statement will make grim-reading for the council, which has already warned the DFE: “If we don’t act fast, more school closures will inevitably follow.”

Without government support, it is unclear how schools can climb out of budgetary

deficit, and prevent mergers, restructures or, at worst, closures.

Wuraola, who has a son in year two, said: “We’re hoping we can revive the school back if the government can provide the funding that is needed.

“I know the government is really struggling but that’s the best thing they could do for Southwark. I’m afraid of taking my child out of school because he’s really settled it.”

Sameria Zahabi, a student nurse whose two children attend St Francesca said: “I’m heartbroken to be honest – a lot of parents are.

I love it here – the teachers are great.”

On Friday, July 1, Fairlawn Primary School in Lewisham told parents that due to “budgetary challenges”, year four will be reduced from three classes to two and the school will employ fewer teaching assistants.”

Incredibly, it’s still on duty.

Officers arrived at ‘The Great Get Together Bankside’, a community event inspired by the late-MP Jo Cox, with a Rover SD1 V8 Automatic 1983, on Saturday, June 25.

Kids and adults got to try out different police hats, sit behind the wheel, and chat to police about their work in the local community.

Astonishingly, when the car is taken out for shows, it’s still officially operating as a police patrol car, over 40 years after it was first introduced.

Police say the SD1 still “commands respect from the motoring public

wherever we go”.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Neighbourhood teams regularly hold and attend events to give the public the opportunity to speak to them faceto-face, and learn more about what the Metropolitan Police does every day to keep them safe.

“Things like cars, equipment, and horses are always a great attraction for children and adults alike. They’re not seen every day, and represent some of the things that make policing really unique.”

The SD1, a product of development between Rover and Triumph engineering, was designed by David Bache and introduced in 1976.

The car, which featured at the Queen’s Jubilee Parade, is not only an original, but believed to be the only surviving version owned by the Metropolitan Police Service.

Three-year-old black labrador PD Dexter is the Met Police’s first wellbeing dog. Originally trained as a drugs sniffer dog, he was too friendly for the role. Dexter was redeployed in summer 2020 to help frontline officers dealing with stress and PTSD amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk More than 91,000 people were waiting to start treatment at Guy’s and St Thomas’ in April, the latest available figures.

That’s up 27 per cent from the previous April, when around 72,000 people were waiting for treatment at the NHS trust.

About 67 per cent of people waiting for specialist treatment at Guy’s and St Thomas’ in April this year had been waiting less than eighteen weeks - well below the NHS’ operational standard of 92 per cent. The trust’s performance has gone down slightly over the year, when about 69 per cent of patients had been waiting less than eighteen weeks.

The figure dropped to 55 per cent for trauma and orthopaedic surgery, 58 per cent for general surgery, and 58 per cent for gynaecological treatment. Elderly medicine, respiratory treatment and general internal medicine waiting times were generally shorter.

For comparison, King’s College Hospital’s record was slightly better, with around 72 per cent of patients waiting less than eighteen weeks for treatment. The trust had about 77,000 people on the waiting list as of April 2022. Lewisham and Greenwich was slightly worse, with 63 per cent of patients waiting less than eighteen weeks to be treated. St George’s University hospitals had 72 per cent seen within eighteen weeks.

It comes after Guy’s and St Thomas’ cancelled 400 operations last-minute over the Christmas period, after the rapid spread of the Omicron variant caused staff shortages.

It is true that the pandemic has hugely exacerbated waiting times in Guy’s and St Thomas’, as it has in hospitals across the UK. But the trust was not meeting the NHS standard for waiting times even before Covid-19. In April 2019, about 87 per cent of people on the 77,600-person waiting list had been seen within eighteen weeks - much better than 2022’s figure, but still below the NHS standard. In both April 2018 and 2017 that figure stood at about 89 per cent.

Meanwhile Southwark Council’s Labour head of public health slammed the Conservative national government for the huge waiting list.

Evelyn Akoto said: “Too many people in Southwark are waiting too long for treatment on the NHS. That’s not good enough, and it’s ruining people’s lives.

“The Conservatives can’t blame this on the pandemic. After a decade of Tory mismanagement, the NHS went into the pandemic with staff shortages and record waiting lists.”

Cllr Akoto called for more the government to spend more money on the problem, but it is unclear what exactly is needed. The NHS budget for the 2021/2022 financial year stood at £190.3 billion, according to the King’s Fund charity.

A spokesperson for Guy’s and St Thomas’ said: “We are absolutely committed to reducing the time patients wait for diagnosis and treatment, with a particular focus on patients who have been waiting the longest. We understand how difficult it is for patients and their families who are waiting for care.

“We have introduced many initiatives across the Trust to support them, including our successful High Intensity Theatre (HIT) lists which allow us to treat more patients in a single session.”

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson did not comment on Guy’s specifically, but said: “Demand for the NHS is rising. We are working to bust the Covid backlogs with record investment into the NHS so patients can be seen quicker and access life-saving care.

“Good progress is being made on cutting waiting times with a two thirds reduction in the number of patients waiting longest for treatment since February.

“We are also adopting innovative ways of working to ensure patients have easier access to tests – and community diagnostic centres have already delivered more than a million checks and scans since last July.”

91,000 on waiting list at Guy’s & St Thomas’ One man has waited so long his teeth have fallen out

One man has said he has been left waiting years for an appointment with a Guy’s and St Thomas’ dentist - so long that all his teeth fell out.

Bermondsey man John Ryan, who is terminally ill with a degenerative condition in his spine., said his 2020 dentistry appointment was axed because he had an infection, and several others were then cancelled because of the pandemic. “I’ve lost all the teeth in my head,” he said.

Mr Ryan also suffers from severe chronic pain and has also been waiting weeks for an injection that might help. “This man don’t sleep, he’s an ill man,” his wife Mary said.

Mr Ryan, 58, suffers from a litany of other severe health problems, including an enlarged heart, diabetes and kidney problems. He was also in a coma for three months in 2018 because of double pneumonia.

A spokesperson for Guy’s said Mr. Ryan had cancelled his appointment - he has denied this was the case.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Days after convicted killer Ian Simms took the location of his victim’s remains to the grave, a bereaved mother says ‘Helen’s Law’ doesn’t go far enough.

‘Helen’s Law’, named after Merseyside murder victim Helen McCourt, was passed in 2020 to ensure that killers like Simms, who refuse to disclose information about their victims’ whereabouts, face longer behind bars.

Jackie Summerford’s daughter Bonnie Barrett was murdered in 2007, aged 24, by Rotherhithe resident and ‘Ripper copycat’ Derek Brown. He too has never said where her remains lay.

Bonnie’s grief-stricken mother, who lives on the Aylesbury Estate, Walworth, spent years campaigning for a law like ‘Helen’s Law’. But two years after it was passed, she says “it ain’t working”.

“If it was the ‘60s he would never come out – when they got life, they got life. Ten or fifteen years for taking a life is nothing at the end of the day.”

Having also murdered a Chinese woman named Xiao-Mei Guo, 29, who sold DVDs, he was eventually caught and sentenced to thirty years for the two killings in 2008.

Fourteen years later, he still won’t tell police what he did with Bonnie’s body, prolonging the heartache for Jackie.

If he said where Bonnie’s remains are, Jackie says it would make “such a difference” – “If I had just one bone, I would bury it”, she says.

Jackie would like to see the law changed so that killers who don’t give up information are never released.

However, some human rights groups say indefinite detention is incompatible with Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Instead, ‘Helen’s Law’ makes it a legal requirement for parole boards to consider withholding release if a killer refuses to reveal a victim’s location.

So even without revealing the location of Bonnie’s remains, Brown could be released as soon as 2038, by which time he would be in his late 70s.

“I hope he doesn’t get out because if he comes out he could do the same again”, says Jackie. “I’m not worried about what happens to me. I’m worried about what happens to other people.”

Until he reveals where Bonnie is, Jackie says “he’s still in control”. “He’s still in

control now. He’s got what he wants. He’s only got thirty years at the end of the day, he’s got three meals a day, hasn’t got to pay rent”, she says.

The scars of the tragedy run deep in the family. Jackie says her ex-husband can’t even put up a photo of his daughter and that Bonnie’s siblings struggle to speak about her.

Jackie says she sees crime unfold all around her neighbourhood and worries that young men are dying because of “soft” sentences.

“I see about these murders and stabbings. With all this knife crime that’s going on, we’ve got to sort something.”

Police said the charges relate to four separate incidents, in which one victim was assaulted, two victims were threatened with a knife, and another where one victim ‘sustained a knife wound’. Fortunately, officers told the News her ‘injuries were not life threatening.’

The attacks were reported to have taken place between Friday, June 11 and Sunday, June 13, 2021. In one

incident, it was originally reported that a mum was accosted in front of her ten-year-old son.

Marie Archer was charged on Thursday, 17 June 2021 with attempted GBH with intent, GBH with intent and two counts of threatening with a bladed article in a public place.

The offences she pleaded guilty to differed slightly from those she was charged with.

Archer will be sentenced on August 15.

Wood Vale woman, 53, admits carrying out a series of attacks on other women

A 53-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to various violent offences after a spate of attacks on women around Wood Vale last year.

Marie Archer, 53, (06/12/67), of Wood Vale, Forest Hill, admitted to one count of grievous bodily harm with intent, one count of actual bodily harm and two counts of threatening

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is appealing for witnesses as it investigates whether police used excessive force against people who stopped an immigration van in Peckham.

Police were called to Evan Cook Close, Peckham, shortly after 1.30pm on Saturday, June 11 to a report of protesters obstructing immigration officers who had arrested a Nigerian man over suspected immigration offences.

Protesters blocked the van as it tried to depart and footage appearing to show clashes between the crowd and the police went viral, with some accusing police of being too heavyhanded.

After a stand-off lasting several hours

the arrestee, suspected of overstaying his visa, was released on immigration bail.

IOPC Regional Director Sal Naseem said: “To assist with our investigation into the level of force the police officers used, we would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened.

“We are aware that footage of the incident, which appeared to show force being used, was posted on social media in the aftermath of the incident and would urge anyone who either has or knows of any footage that may have been recorded, to contact us as soon as possible.”

The investigation began following a conduct referral from the Metropolitan Police Service on June 18.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A housing company has backtracked after originally telling Bermondsey residents they would have to pay nearly £900 per week for a guard to take heavy items up the stairs, despite him never showing up - with the problems caused by the lift in the block not working for a month.

A lift in the Exchange block of flats, which are near Spa Gardens and owned

by Notting Hill Genesis, has been broken since May 30. This has caused problems for people living on the higher floors, like parents with young children, and people who are carrying heavy shopping.

A housing officer for Notting Hill Genesis told residents that they would bring in a ‘guard’ to help them take heavy items up the stairs until the lift was fixed. But resident Kyle Taylor said no one he had spoken to had ever seen this guard.

Notting Hill Genesis said that the flat owners would be charged for the guard at a rate of £896.70 per week excluding VAT, despite the service that they admitted was poor. The housing officer said in an email to residents that “many of you will want to know why the cost is service chargeable.”

The officer continued: “The lift is still out of service because of issues beyond our control. As a business we have acted accordingly and there is no service failure.”

“The new part was ordered quickly, and we attempted to take the part from another lift in the interim, but this failed,” the officer added.

After the News contacted Notting Hill Genesis, they backed down and said that residents would not be charged for the mystery guard, whose services are no longer being used. Instead the concierge for the building will help residents take things upstairs until the

lift is fixed, which should be by August.

A spokesperson for the company apologised in a statement and said that they would be working out if they can provide more tailored support for individual residents.

“We apologise that the communications issued recently caused concern for residents, and are happy to be able to clarify that no cost has been applied to the service charge for the guard service. Also, once the repair is completed we will be offering a gesture of goodwill to all residents within the block to acknowledge the distress and inconvenience that the lack of a workinglift has caused.”

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police are looking for a man after a woman was sexually assaulted on a train travelling to London Bridge.

Kyle Taylor Kyle Taylor, a resident of the block, said aside from the inconvenience of the broken lift and the threat of added costs, the whole affair reinforced his view that the development was “poorly managed”.

“We’ve got parents living on the fifth floor - you want them to carry their prams up that high? It’s ridiculous.

We put up with so much in this development.

Mr Taylor added that this was not the first time the lifts had been out of service, and that residents had suffered other problems with the block. The News reported in 2016 that residents had often been left without any running water for days at a time.

The victim was sitting alone on the train at about 2pm on Wednesday, June 22, when a man came up to her and tried to start a conversation. He leant over and began touching her inappropriately.

She tried to escape but he blocked her with his legs. She eventually managed to push past him and get off at London Bridge.

Officers believe the man in the CCTV images may have information which could help their investigation.

Figures released through a Southwark resident’s freedom of information request showed that the Labourcontrolled council owed leaseholders an average of £1,258 in the 2021/2022 financial year after overestimating how much major works would cost.

Southwark’s Lib Dem group said the findings were “shocking” and demanded a review of the process. Labour said that it had to charge leaseholders up front, or it would not have money for other housing projects or repairs.

Council estates are made up of council tenants, and people who own flats that have been sold off - leaseholders. The buildings themselves are still owned by the council. When repair work needs to take place, the council can charge leaseholders for their share of the costs.

The council makes an estimate of the costs, and then charges leaseholders, who have the option of paying in instalments.

The actual final cost becomes clear at the end of the project, but the council has been taking an average of three-and-ahalf years to send leaseholders the final bill.

Cllr Darren Merrill Road in Borough, uncovered the data, which goes from 2016 to 2022, through a freedom of information request. She said that she had been left more than £2,000 out of pocket in major works that took place shortly before the Covid-19 pandemic, on top of previous repairs about ten years ago.

Commenting, Cllr Victor Chamberlain, who leads the Lib Dems on Southwark Council, criticised Labour for the delays for “making our residents’ lives harder amid a cost-of-living emergency.”

He added: “Leaseholders are already struggling with inadequate housing repairs and poor customer service. At the very least, Labour should have the decency to ensure the council pays any debts it owes to residents quickly and fairly” Cllr Darren Merrill, Southwark Labour’s cabinet member for council

Cllr Victor Chamberlain homes and homelessness, hit back at the Lib Dems for “proposing to give much more favourable terms to leaseholders at the expense of secure tenants who have not been able to afford to buy their home, whilst delaying the council’s ability to undertake essential works”.

Cllr Merrill argued that: “Estimated bills allow leaseholders to contribute to the cost of works at the start of a project, whilst secure tenants have been paying into the council for years.

We offer a variety of repayment options for leaseholders including three to four years’ options interest-free, with longer term options with marginal interest rates charged...

“We aim to provide as accurate an estimate as possible, and the fact that we are able to achieve better value than predicted saves residents and leaseholders money.”

Shocking: Suspected robber wielding knife runs at man in Park in broad daylight Exclusive

Footage shared with the News shows the masked man, wearing a tracksuit, running at another man in the Bermondsey park in the area near the tennis courts. It is thought that the incident took place on last Saturday afternoon (July 2) at around 3pm.

It is unclear if anyone called the police, because officers were unable to confirm

as of Tuesday afternoon if anyone had been arrested or charged in connection with the incident.

The footage shows the would-be victim appearing to escape the attacker. It is unclear if anyone was hurt after filming ended.

Bermondsey residents said the man was taking part in a gang initiation, and he appears to join a group of other men after the attack. The News has not been able to verify this information.

In the wake of the attack the Southwark Park association 1869, which represents the park, warned that a lack of community wardens patrolling the park could lead to more such violent incidents.

Southwark’s Most Crime-Ridden Wards in April and sexual offences, 53 thefts from the person, and 45 incidents of anti-social behaviour.

Borough and Bankside was Southwark’s second most crimeridden area in April with thefts remaining rampant.

Like London Bridge and West Bermondsey, crime fell overall but its high levels of theft are an ongoing concern. There were 76 thefts, 71 thefts from the person, 57 anti-social behaviour incidents and 28 violence and sexual offences.

3. RYE LANE - 283 crimes recorded

The News has gathered the data to break down which were the most dangerous wards in the borough for that month.

1. London Bridge and West Bermondsey 344 crimes recorded

The riverside ward stretching from London Bridge to Old Kent Road witnessed significantly less crime in April compared to March.

However, its crime rate was still the highest in Southwark. Packed with bars and clubs, the area is a hotspot for theft, violence and sexual crime.

There were 65 thefts, 61 violence

The Rye Lane area comes third in the list, with crime in April dropping off compared to March.

However, anti-social behaviour and violence and sexual offences remained a real problem for locals.

Outside the Rye Lane entrance to Peckham Rye Station alone, there were 32 incidents including seven bike thefts and four public order offences. Rye Lane ward saw 60 violence and sexual offences, 57 antisocial behaviour incidents and 27 thefts.

4. North Walworth 248 crimes recorded

North Walworth, bordered by Newington Butts and Old Kent Road, remained at fourth spot in April.

The area around the Tesco at 224 - 226 Walworth Road was a hotspot for stealing, witnessing five shoplifts

and five thefts. North Walworth saw 66 anti-social behaviour incidents, 47 violent and sexual offences and 28 thefts from the person.

5. Rotherhithe 181 crimes recorded

Crime in Rotherhithe was climbing steadily from January to March but April signaled a break in the trend.

While violence and anti-social behaviour remains an issue, crime levels plummeted overall.

April saw 35 violence and sexual offences, 33 anti-social behaviour incidents, 19 thefts and 15 burglaries.

Free summer pop-up park opens at Surrey Quays

The park is open to all and will run through until Friday, August 26. The Canada Water based park, called ‘Love Summer’, includes live music, terrarium workshops and yoga to those who visit.

It is separated into two key social areas: The Chill Zone and The Plant Room.

In The Chill Zone, visitors are able to sit with drinks and play games like table-tennis.

The Plant Room is a more active, plant-filled venue, which will host a variety of events

changing week to week.

However, regular events include a selection of up-and-coming DJs, live music acts and bar experiences on Fridays and weekends.

On Mondays, there is mini glass garden building workshops.

Thursdays art classes are provided with Rod Kitson, an artist in residence at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre.

Edward Cree, Head of Asset Management for British Land’s major Canada Water development, said: “Canada Water’s Summer Park will include weekly cultural activities, and a mix of up-and-coming talent, providing endless entertainment which is fun, free and welcoming for everyone to enjoy.”

bus cuts would save just £35m PER YEAR OUT of £400m NEEDED

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The bus cuts proposed by Transport for London (TfL) would only save £35 million out of the £400 million required, a senior executive at the transport agency has said.

TfL is consulting on cutting sixteen routes - four of which run through Southwark - and changing 78 more under cost-cutting proposals.

But the bus cuts, which residents, drivers, politicians and unions have all warned would have a disastrous impact, would only deliver nine per cent of the savings the government

is asking for as part of its funding agreement with TfL. Asked at the London Assembly transport committee for the level of savings the cuts would result in, Andy Lord, the chief operating officer of TfL, said: “When they’re fully implemented, we believe they will be in the region of £35 million per annum.

He added that the cuts were “not an insubstantial amount obviously in the context of savings we’ve got to make in the wider TfL”. Mr Lord added that the “vast majority” of savings would not come from cutting services.

The four routes that would be affected in Southwark are the 12, the 45, the 78 and the 521. Southwark

Council’s overview and scrutiny committee has invited Sadiq Khan to discuss the proposed cuts at a meeting next Wednesday (July 6).

TfL extended the consultation period for the cuts until August 7, after first setting the deadline at July 12, because of extremely high interest.

Nearly 600 TfL executives got £100K or more last year

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Nearly 600 executives at Transport for London (TfL) were paid at least £100,000 each last year, as the transport agency prepares to cut back bus services to make cost savings.

The 597 making six figures in the 2021/2022 financial year, which includes 40 Crossrail staff members, was an increase of more than 30 per cent on the previous year, when 455 executives got £100,000 or more. Of those 597, twelve made more than £315,000 last year, with one executive netting more than £625,000.

A spokesperson for Sadiq Khan admitted the figures were shocking but sought to pass some of the blame onto his predecessor Boris Johnson. It comes as TfL continues to negotiate a funding agreement with the government after its finances were decimated by the pandemic, with bus cuts threatened as part of costcutting measures.

Some 161 TfL staff members made £100,000 as a base salary last year - one fewer than the previous year - with the rest made up by overtime payments, severance packages, and bonuses deferred from the previous year because of the pandemic. TfL has said it will not pay staff any more bonuses until its finances

are stable.

A spokesperson for Khan said: “The Mayor understands that Londoners will be shocked by these figures and he has been clear with TfL that these oneoff payments to departing TfL staff must be minimised.

“These huge departure payments are the legacy of the sky-high salaries and long-notice periods agreed under the previous mayor, which Sadiq has taken action on.

“Since Sadiq took office in 2016 the number of people on a salary of more than £100k at TfL has dropped by nearly 20 per cent and the mayor has agreed with the TfL leadership that no new bonuses should be paid until TfL achieves financial sustainability by April 2023.”

The highest earner at TfL last year was departed head of customers, communication and technology Vernon Everitt, who made £626,037. Of that, some £352,697 was a severance package, with a base salary of just over £200,000.

Other high earners included: Commissioner Andy Byford, on £355,792 Chief finance officer Simon Kilonback, on £407,461 Crossrail chief executive Mark Wild, on £447,717 Chief capital officer Stuart Harvey, on £375,276 Chief customer and strategy officer Gareth Powell, on £380,294.

Northern Line night tube returns

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Northern line trains ran throughout the night on last Saturday (July 2), as the Night Tube returned to the line after the pandemic.

The Night Tube already restarted on the Jubilee line in May, as well as the Victoria and Central lines in November last year. The Piccadilly Line is set to run Night Tube services starting from this summer. All night-time services, which usually run on Fridays and Saturdays, were suspended when lockdown started in March 2o20.

It comes after a petition launched last year to reinstate the Night Tube to protect women travelling home at night gained tens of thousands of signatures.

Nick Dent, TfL director of customer operations, said: “Night Tube provides

a safe and quick travel option for all Londoners and visitors looking to make the most of all the capital has to offer in the evenings, and those who need to travel to or from work at night.”

The Northern line is one of three Tube lines that run through Southwark, alongside the Jubilee and Bakerloo lines.

Long Lane, otherwise known as the A2198, from Borough Station to Tower Bridge Road, delayed cars by three hours and 45 minutes every month, according to Instant Office’s research.

This was only surpassed by the A3207 in Wandsworth which goes from Clapham Junction to York Road and saw average monthly delays of three hours

and 47 minutes.

Mortimer Street (A5204), Westminster, Little St John Street (A5268) in Cheshire West and Creek Road (A200) in Greenwich also made the top five.

However, Southwark did not even come in the top five most congested boroughs, which consisted of Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster, Islington, Wandsworth and Camden.

City Hall has already undertaken numerous initiatives aimed at reducing the number of car journeys people take.

Long Lane already falls within the Congestion Charge Zone, which means drivers must pay a fee of up to £17.150

if travelling through it from 7pm to 6pm Monday to Friday, or 12pm to 6pm Saturday to Sunday.

Like most of Southwark, it also falls within the Ultra Low Emission Zone which imposes charges on drivers with vehicles that don’t meet emission standards.

Meanwhile, Low-Traffic Neighbourhoods, introduced across Southwark, aim to reduce congestion and encourage ‘green’ modes of transport.

The former City Hall may have been saved from future alterations after the government rejected a ‘Certificate of Immunity from Listing’ (COI) application.

The Mayor of London has been accused of exaggerating the savings made by relocating City Hall and told to be “more open and transparent”.

The allegations were made by Caroline Pidgeon (pictured), Chair of the Greater London Assembly (GLA) Oversight Committee, in an open letter to Sadiq Khan published on Monday, July 5.

The Mayor has previously claimed that moving the GLA’s headquarters from The Queen’s Walk to The Crystal Building in Newham would save the tax-payer £61 million over five years.

But Ms Pidgeon, leader of the Liberal Democrats in the London Assembly says it only saved £37 million because the landlord had offered a new rate at a £24 million discount.

But a spokesperson for the Mayor of London at the GLA doubled down on Khan’s initial calculations saying: “The relocation of City Hall is saving £61m over five years to invest in London’s recovery from the pandemic and protect vital services including policing, the London Fire Brigade and the transport network.”

Expanding on her own findings, Ms Pidgeon wrote: “Decision making at the GLA must be based on robust financial analysis. The GLA, including

A customer service assistant working at stations across south-east London, who wished to stay anonymous, claimed: “It’s happening more and more because of stress-related sickness.

“People are fed up and it’s because of the long hours that are expected of us. There’s some stints where you have to do eight early or late shifts in a row.

He believes if 600 London Underground staff are cut, as TfL has proposed to remedy financial problems, similar closures could increase.

A TfL spokesperson said emergency closures were “rare” and that they “work

According to the letter, the new City Hall was due to open on October 21 2021 but was then delayed on four occasions, with staff finally moving in during March 2022.

As a result, staff suffered “uncertainty

and confusion” and were forced to work in offices that weren’t fit for habitation.

The construction was hindered by Covid-19 infections, global supply chain issues and the need to replace an “extensive area of flooring” according to a GLA spokesperson.

The letter also states that early meetings held at the new City Hall paused construction works, incurring additional costs of £85,000.

A spokesperson for the Mayor’s Office at the GLA said: “The new City Hall is already proving to be popular with both staff and Londoners - and a busy and vibrant home for London government.

“The Mayor thanks the Oversight Committee for their work and will respond in due course.”

Caroline Pidgeon has been approached for comment.

Kuwaiti-owned St Martin’s Property Group submitted the application after the Greater London Authority moved out to The Crystal Building in Newham’s Royal Docks in January 2022.

If accepted, it would have prevented the ‘neo-futuristic’ building from being listed for at least five years, potentially paving the way for structural changes.

But the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMAS) rejected the application, meaning the building could be protected by listed status in the future.

The Twentieth Century Society (C20) celebrated the news saying: “C20 Society is pleased with DCMS’s rejection of the COI request, leaving the door open for the building to be considered for listing in the future.

“Indeed, while Historic England’s report concluded that it was still too soon to fully assess the architectural significance of City Hall, it pointedly did not rule out that the criteria for listing may be met in the future.”

But some commuters were unimpressed and expressed their dismay online. One twitter user wrote that the service provided to Londoners was “embarrassing” and that TfL “has no respect for the citizens that have to pay to go to work every day”.

Another person tweeted: “OK, Bermondsey station closed this morning cos of shortage of staff. Maybe wards in the hospitals should start closing too anytime there’s a shortage of staff.”

Every London Underground Station must have a minimum number of staff on shift to meet fire regulations. If staff fall below this number, the station must close or source staff from other stations.

TfL said Sunday’s Bermondsey closure was not related to the recent spike in Covid-19 cases. It was approached for comment regarding the anonymous staff member’s statements

In City Hall’s case, it’s possible that its interior structural design, specifically made for the GLA’s purposes, make it unappealing to prospective leaseholders.

Oli Marshall, Campaigns Manager at the 20C Society said: “It was purposebuilt as the home for the assembly so it had a lot of things that were intended for that usage. The assembly chamber is the most evident. It had all the values of a democratic building designed into it.”

The rejection of the application indicates that the DCMAS regards City Hall as of “special architectural interest”.

In 2021, the C20 society applied to have the building listed but was rejected by Historic England because the building was not in immediate danger of demolition.

City Hall was designed by architect Norman Foster, built in 2002 at a cost of £43 million, and then leased to the GLA. In 2013, London Bridge Holdings sold the More London estate, which includes City Hall, to Kuwaiti firm St Martins Property Group.

In November 2020, Sadiq Khan announced that the GLA would move to new premises, saving the taxpayers £61 million over five years.

In an open letter to Sadiq Khan, Caroline Pidgeon, Chair of the GLA Oversight Committee, said that the savings had been exaggerated and were actually £37 million.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The children’s hospital Evelina London has started using virtual reality (VR) headsets to calm children down while they are undergoing stressful procedures.

The two VR headsets let children experience different 360 degree environments, like swimming unvderwater with tropical fish, visiting outer space and walking with dinosaurs - or they can just play games.

Ellie Jackson, 11, used a VR headset during an appointment before having an operation on her hip. Her mum Helen said: “Ellie hates needles and is really terrified of getting a blood test.

She can get really anxious and upset

and it can take a really long time to calm her.”

Before Ellie had a blood test, she was asked if she wanted to use the VR headset. Helen said: “As soon as she put it on, she was completely distracted.

The nurse had to put a cannula in her hand and she didn’t even notice it going in. The difference it made was amazing.

“It made the whole experience so much easier. Not only did it help to calm Ellie, but it meant I was less worried about her as well.”

The headsets were paid for using donations made in response to the fundraiser by Tony Hudgell, the little boy who raised £1.5 million for Evelina London by walking more than ten kilometres on his prosthetic legs two years ago.

Sports car in Tower Bridge ‘crash’

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The driver of a sports car was arrested for dangerous driving, and without insurance, after ‘crashing into a van’ on Tower Bridge last Thursday (June 30).

Police said the black McClaren crashed into the back of a white van at just after 4am on Thursday, which made the van crash into the railings.

An ambulance crew came but neither driver needed to be taken to hospital, although both had minor injuries.

Chief Inspector Jesse Wynne, of the City of London Police, said “City of London

Police officers attended the southbound carriageway of Tower Bridge after receiving a report of a road traffic collision at around 4.07am, Thursday 30 June 2022.

“A black sports car hit the rear of a white van, causing the van to crash into the bridge railings.

“The collision was also attended by London Ambulance Service. Both drivers sustained minor injuries but fortunately did not require hospitalisation.

“The driver of the black sports car was arrested on suspicion of driving without insurance and dangerous driving. He has subsequently been released pending further investigation.”

Southwark has the second-highest rate of cycling out of all London boroughs, behind only Hackney, according to a survey by Healthy Streets, a group of organisations that aim to encourage active travel and clean air.

Some 11.6 per cent of people in Southwark cycled at least five times a week in 2021, with Hackney on twelve per cent.

Around eight per cent of people in both Richmond and Wandsworth cycled five times every week, while seven per cent of people in Lambeth were also regular cyclists.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Richmond was an outlier among outer London boroughs for cycling. Havering, Barking

and Dagenham, Harrow, Bexley, Sutton, Bromley, Redbridge, Croydon, Hillingdon, Barnet, Enfield, Waltham Forest and Ealing all had cycling rates of three per cent or lower.

Southwark also had one of the largest drops in car ownership over the past year out of any London borough - which researchers put down to the increases in petrol prices, general difficulties with the cost of living, the ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) growing - as well as policies to encourage active travel like low-traffic neighbourhoods and cycle lanes.

There are 2,145 fewer cars registered in Southwark with the driver and vehicle licensing agency (DVLA) than a year ago - a drop of nearly four per cent. That is behind only Newham.

The area covered by low-traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) has increased by nearly a quarter in Southwark over the past two years, behind only Hackney. These changes have been controversial in many places, with some

residents arguing that they were not consulted properly, and that the new restrictions have made getting around more difficult. Others have welcomed the quieter streets and cleaner air.

Southwark Living Streets member and Walworth resident Jeremy Leach made the bold prediction that the “vast majority” of journeys will not involve cars in the future. He cited Southwark Council’s promise to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

He said: “A strong set of election results along with the drive towards Net Zero from the Climate Emergency strategy should see Southwark moving rapidly towards the vast majority of journeys being walked, cycled and taken by public transport in the next few years.

“Key for Southwark is reducing traffic and especially through traffic on neighbourhood streets, making walking and cycling safer including more protected cycle lanes on main roads and introducing controlled parking zones across the whole borough.”

‘Community fridge’ offering free fresh food in Bankside

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bankside charity is opening a new ‘community fridge’ that provides free fresh food for anyone who wants it.

The Bridge, a women’s charity on Southwark Bridge Road, will be opening up the fridge to the public on July 20 from midday. Anyone can use the fridge, despite the Bridge being a charity that

supports women. No registration is needed, although people can sign up to get updates on what will be in the fridge.

Food in the fridge will be supplied by London food charity the Felix Project, as well as local businesses and other charities. Any local people or businesses who would like to be involved can contact the Bridge.

Staff at the Bridge decorated the fridge with magnets that show their frustrations at how difficult it can be

for everyone to get good-quality food at affordable prices. The charity is also putting on a coffee morning for women on July 27 at 10am, with optional fridge magnet making. All materials are provided and the event is free and open to all women.

London City Airport is consulting on its plans for the future and wants to hear from you Following the publication of its master plan in 2020, the airport is now seeking views on proposals to meet increasing passenger demand over the next ten years or so, supporting London’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and making best use of its existing runway and facilities.

The proposals being consulted upon include changes to the airport’s existing planning permission to allow it to welcome up to 9 million passengers a year (currently limited to 6.5 million). The airport is also inviting views on additional flexibility to operate on Saturday afternoon and potentially into the evening, but no later than 10pm, as well as six additional flights in the first half hour of operations from Monday to Saturday, and some increased flexibility for delayed departures and arrivals in the last half hour of operations.

The proposals do not involve any change to the existing 8-hour night curfew, or the operating hours on Sunday or the number of annual flights permitted. No new infrastructure or development is proposed, other than what is already consented.

Stephen Bayley, 70, played the unfortunate imperial soldier in the 1977 sci-fi masterpiece Star Wars: A New Hope and enjoys a cult following despite only appearing on-screen for a matter of seconds.

Stephen, originally from Wolverhampton, and 24 at the time of filming, also filled in as Darth Vader’s gloved hands but doesn’t think his digits made the final cut.

Over 50 years later, he is still paid to visit conventions and sign autographs for fans who, to his own amusement, are often star-struck.

“I’d just left the Midlands and come to London to find a better life – as the cliché goes – and was doing some modelling.

I got on with an agency called Central Castings. It was the first gig they gave me”, he said.

Stephen, who has also appeared in Killing Eve, The Great and The Essex Serpent said he had “no idea” he would become so iconic.

In the film, TK-421 is killed by Hans Solo, and his uniform is used by Luke Skywalker on his clandestine mission to save Princess Leia.

Stephen admits he finds some of the attention he gets bizarre. He recalled once signing a photograph for a young fan in Sheffield, only for the boy’s dad to snatch

it for himself.

Although he’s never been a big fan of Star Wars, Stephen has been made an honorary member of the UK Garrison of the 501st Legion, a worldwide Star Wars fan and costuming club.

St Dunstan’s in Catford was named independent senior school of the year at the Tes awards on June 17.

Headteacher Nicholas Hewlett said school staff were “absolutely delighted” to have won the prize.

“It is testament to the extraordinary drive and ambition of so many that we have been able to create the unique school culture we enjoy today. To transform a school so that it challenges and trailblazes in the sector takes a colossal community effort. My gratitude goes to everyone who has

contributed to our incredible journey as a school.”

The awards were voted on by school leaders, inspectors and researchers.

David James, who was on the panel and has worked with independent schools for two decades, said St Dunstan’s had “a very clear and coherent vision” both with the curriculum and the local community.

“The head is asking interesting questions of the sector, including areas like privilege and responsibility, which go beyond the usual platitudes. It’s a really interesting school in a tough market, trying to not just survive but actually make something different for the children and families they’re working with.”

It comes after the school, which was founded in 1888, opened new facilities including a £25 million junior school..

After Star Wars, Stephen worked as an engineer, painter and decorator, travelled the world, settling in Camberwell in 2007.

Now retired, as well as the odd film job, he enjoys spending time with his Jack Russell, Pearl, 2. She has just started yapping, which concerns him.

Family fun coming to Potters Fields

The event, set for the weekend from July 23 to 24, is being organised by Team London Bridge, a group that works with local businesses to improve the local area.

Although the activities are aimed at children aged five to twelve and their parents, all ages are welcome.

There will be Plot 17, a mobile block

party put on by ecological hip-hop hero Kenny Baraka and his DJ, Conrad Kira.

He will be spinning tracks that spread a message of “making things green”.

With Midsummerland, visitors can embark on an audio adventure where they’ll be taken to an imaginary midsummer festival in full swing.

There will be The Enchanted Cinema, where people are invited to create live scores to award-winning film animations alongside musicians from The Cabinet of Living Cinema.

With Dogs of London, pooch-lovers are invited to take a stroll through a canine soundscape, bringing dog walking to life through a mix of sound and music.

Speaker Box Street Party will lead an afternoon of dance which encourages people to express their “feelings of happiness joy and passion” Meanwhile, art enthusiasts can join local artist Kay Walsh on a guided tour around London Bridge which explores the colourful works spotted around the area.

As well as all that, there will be meditation walks, live reggaeton music, photography workshops, and more.

Former housing office to be bulldozed for new council homes

Piers Corbyn fined for lockdown breaches

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Piers Corbyn has been hit with a £750 fine for organising four big gatherings that broke Covid-19 lockdown rules.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The former Southwark Council housing office in Rotherhithe will be knocked down and replaced with a six-storey block of flats containing thirteen council flats.

The Abbeyfield Road building, which property guardians live in at the moment, will be knocked down to make way for the new homes after the part-six, part-three storey project got planning permission.

Some locals were concerned about overshadowing and the size of the building compared to the nearby Abbeyfield and Pedworth estates, which are largely low-rise - as well as Southwark Park, which the new building will overlook. At one stage the building was going to be seven storeys, but plans were reduced after consultation.

However, the wider area has plenty of high-rise buildings, including the Silverlock Estate across Rotherhithe New Road and Addy House on the corner of Hawkstone Road. Southwark has a

severe shortage of social rent homes, with more than 16,ooo households on the waiting list.

Architects Bell Phillips, who also designed the much-celebrated Southwark Park pavilion, said the new block will mirror the style of the Mission House three doors down.

Southwark Council’s website says that work should finish on the new homes by October next year, although this was based on a timetable that had construction starting in April this year, so will likely be pushed back.

This is the longest cycle Ms Lyons will have taken on, although she rode 170 miles earlier in June and has cycled 150 miles before that.

And she said she would not be staying on in London after she finishes the

mammoth cycle, as she is rushing up to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games. “Watching, not participating!,” she joked.

Ms Cox’s sister Kim Leadbeater, who was elected to represent Batley and Spen last year, said: “‘The Jo Cox Way ride is a great chance for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to connect and engage with one another.

The last two years have been tough for us all, with so many people affected by COVID, lockdowns and the increasing cost of living.

“Despite all this, it’s brilliant to see people’s commitment to making a difference has grown stronger, with cyclists joining together for a seventh time to celebrate the fact that we have ‘far more in common than that which divides us’- words from Jo’s maiden speech in Parliament.”

76-year-old among dozens riding 290 miles to Borough for slain MP

A 76-year-old woman is among more than 70 cyclists riding hundreds of miles from Yorkshire to Borough in memory of Jo Cox, the MP murdered in 2016.

Kath Lyons said she was taking part the 288-mile charity cycle ride from Ms Cox’s former constituency Batley and Spen in Yorkshire down to Flat Iron Square, to support Ms Cox’s legacy of civility and kindness to others.

The cyclists, of whom Ms Lyons is the oldest and an eighteen-year-old is the youngest, will set off on July 27 from Yorkshire, passing through Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Buckinghamshire, before going through west London and Waterloo and ending up in Borough on July 31.

The cycle ride, called the Jo Cox Way, has been running every year since

Detective inspector Chris Rudd of the Met police said: “It was saddening to have to deal with these incidents where large numbers of people illegally gathered in breach of Covid regulations during a national emergency period.

“At a time when so many members of the public were making considerable sacrifices and abiding by the rules to keep others safe, these individuals acted selfishly and risked spreading the virus.

“However, our policing response demonstrated that we were prepared to take action and issue fixed penalty notices to those deliberately flouted the rules.”

Corbyn, a former Southwark councillor

and London mayoral candidate, as well as the brother of former Labour leader Jeremy, was also told to pay nearly £400 in prosecution costs and fees on top of the fine.

This is not the first time Corbyn has been fined for Covid-related offences.

He was ordered to pay £250 in May for calling Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital vaccine staff “murderers”. He has reportedly been arrested fifteen times since the pandemic began.

One such incident took place in February 2021, when he was arrested for handing out leaflets that appeared to compare Covid vaccines to the Holocaust. Corbyn denied “absurd” allegations of anti-semitism, saying that he “was married for 22 years to a Jewesss.”

Corbyn ran again as a Southwark Council candidate in this year’s local elections, representing his Let London Live party. He told the News that his first priority was to oppose any future lockdown restrictions and coercionenforced vaccination programmes the government might impose.

Corbyn was contacted for comment on the latest fine.

Rotherhithe Festival 2022 The festival is returning this Saturday (July 9) The free Rotherhithe festival, which is on King George’s Field near Canada Water Tube station, returns this weekend. It has been run by local resident Barry Duckett for about fifteen years.

Mr Duckett said that with the trouble it causes him and his poor health, he sometimes wonders why he bothers with the festival - but when he sees the children’s smiling faces every year he realises it’s worth the bother.

“I saw a friend of mine walking with her four little kids, and she saw the festival and told them that they couldn’t afford it - but I said to her ‘come in, it’s free’,” he said. “The idea is to bring the community together and make it a good day out for everyone.

“It’s not about your £6 pints, it’s about getting people out, making things cheap so they can afford them, and getting people meeting each other.”

Meanwhile this year’s festival will be dedicated to PCSO Albert Tedam, a popular local police community support officer who died aged just 55 on Boxing Day. His colleagues in the Rotherhithe safer neighbourhood team described him as “always humble and very chatty”.

The festival will feature music from acts like Greg Kofi-Brown, Phil Ramocon and Ramshackle, and Dr Elias and the Soul Surgeons.

The Right to Food organisation Barry is part of will also have a stall giving away fruit and vegetables. Police will also be at the festival on a recruitment drive.

Barry said that he had been told by Southwark Council officers that some funding would be dependent on showing that the festival was environmentally friendly. He said he told them he would buy biodegradable bags so festival attendees’ farts would not enter the atmosphere.

Imani-Lara is driving back to Peckham from a physio session.

Although she lives in Croydon now, she was raised in Peckham, attended St Joseph’s Primary School, and is a self-proclaimed “south London girl”.

driving to see my grandmother and show her my medals. I often go back to see her. I want to settle down in Peckham - it’s where the best memories of my childhood are.”

But in 2022 she’s hardly seen her birthplace. In December, fresh from her Tokyo Olympics 2020 triumph, where she won bronze in the 4 x 100m relay, she flew across the Atlantic to start training in Atlanta, Georgia.

“I felt like I needed a change in my coaching environment. After the Olympics, you feel like asking ‘where are you going next in your career?’” she said.

She’s been working with her new coach Stuart McMillan and says she enjoyed her time in the USA: “From an American perspective, they have such great self-belief. Everyone wants to make it which is inspiring.

“They’re very upfront and the British way of doing things isn’t like that. In America, people are very upfront with how they feel.”

She also said the lack of food regulations in America meant she had to be very careful with what she ate, which she said was “draining”.

Some foods contain steroids, a risk for athletes who are subject to stringent drug testing.

But the training paid off. At July’s UK Athletics Championships in Manchester, Imani swept up bronze medals in both the 100 and 200 metres. It’s an achievement made even more impressive given she only started training for the 200 metres last year.

She has now been selected for England’s Commonwealth Games team in Birmingham. Imani said it will have “a special place” in her heart because it’s on home soil.

Off the track, Imani-Lara is a keen writer. When she was forced to isolate after getting pinged at the Tokyo Olympics, she used the time

to pen a play called ‘Armour of Gaza’.

The play explored her journey from school sports day runner to professional athlete and was performed as part of Knockdown, a weekend of live performance held in Peckham in 2021.

Imani says being a professional athlete has come with sacrifices but that it’s been worth it: “We don’t drink, we don’t eat bad food. But because I’ve been training for so long, I’ve got used to the benefit of sacrifice and I’m starting to see the benefits of what I’ve been doing for the last few years. I don’t wish I was doing anything else.”

Dulwich Village F.C appoint new manager Louis Regan

news@southwarknews.co.uk Dulwich Village F.C have appointed Stuart Webb as the new men’s first team manager.

The Lewisham native revealed the News on his Twitter feed following talks with the club’s chairman.

Webb revealed that the discussion inspired his decision to accept the role at Dulwich Village F.C, who play their football in Division 2 West of the Kent County League, the thirteenth tier of the English football

pyramid.

“When I spoke to the chairman, what he was saying really made me open my eyes a bit more and as he was going on about what the club is like. I could feel the excitement building and I really wanted to be involved with the club.”

An FA qualified coach, Webb has with largely managed youth teams around his local area of Lewisham since 2010. A few years ago, he decided to switch to adult football.

Webb is hoping to generate a buzz

from the Dulwich Village faithful ahead of the pre-season cluster of fixtures. “I’ve not lived in the Southwark borough. But I’m hoping the people of the borough come out and support us in our games. Would be great to get a bit of a crowd going.”

Dulwich Village F.C are the selfstyled “South East London’s top grassroots football club.” In addition to the men’s senior team, the club has youth squads for both boys and girls.

Webb, a father of a 17-year old daughter and an 11-year old son,

reflects on the value of fostering a space for all who want to engage in grass roots football: “It’s very important for me that a club provides for everyone and whether that’s male, female, old, young, good at football and not so good but loves the game. Everyone deserves a chance.”

Webb’s tenure begins on the club’s first pre-season match on July 16th against the Erith and Belvedere Reserves. The Dulwich Village squad will be hoping to establish some momentum ahead of the season’s start on August 20th.

It’s important to recognise where our electricity comes from. Currently renewables make up around 40-45% of the UK electricity mix. For an electric car to be less damaging for the environment than a conventional vehicle, your electricity mix needs to be around 80% renewable. The purpose of deflating tyres is to disincentivise driving an SUV. I recall checking your tyre pressure before you set out on a journey is on the driving test. Public transport infrastructure, particularly in South London is lacking. So I advise people to petition for improved funding in that regard. Also – fewer SUVs would free up traffic and make bus journeys shorter, particularly during the school rush.

What is the root cause of waiting lists?

S

outhwark Labour is calling for more money from the government to tackle spiralling waiting lists at Guy’s and St Thomas’. But would this make a difference? We spent more than £190 billion on the NHS, including Covid money, in the last financial year, and still waiting lists rise and rise.

Then-Health Secretary Sajid Javid said in June that the NHS needed reform, not more money.

It is unclear exactly what he meant by that, but of course his comments were met with howls of rage. Criticising the NHS is not the done thing; any shortcomings must be the result of dastardly government underfunding and stealth privatisation. But many people who have experienced NHS delays or unexplained appointment cancellations in recent years will understand the critical views of John Ryan, the terminally ill man whom we interviewed this week about his difficulties with Guy’s and St Thomas’. Being a doctor or a nurse is an unimaginably hard job, and we should be extremely grateful to these people for their brave, compassionate work. The News asked Guy’s and St Thomas’ what they would want in an ideal world to bring that waiting list down, and see more people within the NHS standard time. That they could not - or would not - say speaks volumes.

Hard to see where Helen’s Law goes now

W

hen ‘Helen’s Law’ received royal assent in 2020, bereaved parents of murdered children celebrated the news. Finally, parole boards had a statutory obligation to consider postponing prisoners’ release if they refused to reveal the location of their victims’ remains.

But the death of Ian Simms, who was released two years ago, despite never revealing the location of Helen McCourt, has left people considering the efficacy of the law, two years after it was passed.

Jackie Summerford of the Aylesbury Estate, whose daughter Bonnie Barrett was murdered in 2007, helped get the law passed through her own campaigning. Having seen Simms released, and fearing that her daughter’s murderer Derek Brown will see freedom without revealing Bonnie’s location, she understandably feels let down by the law.

However, it’s hard to see where the law can go from here. Threatening someone with indefinite detention could be a breach of Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

There’s also a risk, however tiny, that those imprisoned genuinely don’t know where the body is and spend life in behind bars for failing to disclose information they don’t have.

Perhaps, if a change in the law is difficult, improved support for families left bereft in such tragic circumstances could be considered. Jackie says she intends to begin campaigning again in the future.

Whatever her proposals, we hope she is, at the very least, listened to.

The Endz - the Multi-Story Orchestra in Peckham

The Endz is an original piece of music created by an incredible group of young people in Peckham with the world-famous Multi-Story Orchestra – an orchestra that performs in car parks around the UK.

It brings together rap, spoken word and songs to shed light on how social inequality impacts young people, in their own words.

This is their story, their words, their music.

Following the death of a friend in 2019, The Endz was created by an incredible group of young people to tell a modern-day story of friendship, heartbreak and loss - through spoken word, rap, and song.

Knife crime figures in Southwark went up by a shocking 60% in 2018. It was the London borough with the highest number of fatal stabbings. £39 million has been cut from council youth service budgets across the capital and Southwark’s youth service spending is down by 53% since 2011-12.

The Endz faces these issues head-on, with an unrivalled blend of virtuosic musicianship and powerful social commentary.

The performance features a choir of over 100 singers accompanied by a full symphony orchestra. It will be performed in Bold Tendencies’ car park with its spectacular views of London.

“As young people, we are told that we have the power to change things, but people are still not listening to us. Nothing changes.

This is our way of spreading the word and we hope people will listen.”

After a stint in a mental institution, Michael (David Harbour) finds himself the primary care giver for his thoroughly dislikable, terminally ill father Daniel (Bill Pullman), writes Rosie O’Connell.

Trump-like comments, much to the horror of Michael who works hard to not let his father’s behaviour rile him up.

The arrival of hospice care nurse Lillian (Akiya Henry) signals some hope for the pair but with the return of Michael’s brother Nedward (Stephen Wight) followed by the truly abhorrent sister Pam (Sinéad Matthews) things start to go downhill.

The second half takes a much more serious tone that feels quite different from the first, with Daniel off-stage and far less humour, the plot shifts toward sibling drama regarding inheritance.

It is unclear what Mad House is

actually trying to say though. It seems that by attempting to do so much, the depth necessary to truly engage and understand these characters’ motivations is lost somewhere along the line. That’s not to say that there aren’t moments that provide insight, particularly in affectionate moments between Michael and Lillian or where we see the adult siblings regress into childhood squabbles about who is sleeping where.

Overall, Harbour brings a towering performance (literally and metaphorically) as the most robust, captivating character in the story matching Pullman’s unpleasantness and

callousness as Daniel throw for throw.

Ultimately, the narrative lands in an ethically dubious area with an uneasy, abrupt conclusion without really reaching resolution or satisfying payoff. The performances all around are impressive, though, and more than enough to pull the audience through to the end.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Anyone walking across the upper walkway of Tower Bridge this summer might be surprised to come across an artist at work.

Melissa Scott-Miller has been commissioned by the trust that runs the bridge to paint a panoramic view stretching from City Hall and the Shard across the Thames to the skyscrapers of the City.

“It’s a great place, Tower Bridge,” Melissa told the News. “I didn’t realise, although I’ve always admired it. There’s a lot to see, and I’ve found myself getting more and more interested in the history as I’ve been painting.”

Melissa paints a lot outside, and so is used to people coming up to her on the street. But being a kind of public attraction herself is a bit different, she

said.

“Once I start to concentrate, it doesn’t really bother me though.

Sometimes there’s a school group, and there’s a lot of people. It is really nice constantly getting encouragement all day long. A lot of people have been very admiring and encouraging.

“There was one person who put their finger in the paint and smeared it on the canvas. A couple of kids did that very gently but this was actually an adult. I don’t really know why you’d do that.”

A former teacher at the Art Academy on Borough High Street, Melissa was born and raised in London and loves painting the city. “I’m very into bricks, I paint a lot of brick houses,” she said.

“I just like the contrast between the old and the new.

“I love London light, the fact that it’s always changing. There’s a certain bright light that you get. It’s not too sunny, but you get this amazing light even on a day that it’s cloudy.”

Melissa’s painting will be 150cm by 100cm. She started painting at the beginning of June and she hopes to finish the canvas by mid-July, although she will carry on painting throughout the summer. One possibility is a triptych - three paintings side by side. The final work will be sold in a charity auction by the City of London corporation, which owns the bridge, later this year.

Melissa is also running free workshops for families and children to draw their own view from Tower Bridge, with the next one on July 16.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 29 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in:

This is a rolling closure, roads will re-open as soon as the parade passes the junctions.

By Fred Atkins sport@southwarknews.co.uk SOUTH EAST Stars’ Bryony Smith believes there is even more potential in the side after their win over Sunrisers by 80 runs in their Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy match at Beckenham last weekend.

The Stars posted 281 for 8 before dismissing Sunrisers for 201, Smith claiming 3 for 37.

Smith was also the Stars topscorer with 66, while Alice Capsey hit 64 not out and Kira Chathli 61.

Smith said: “We’re very happy.

The first game of 50 overs is always hard coming back in, but I think we batted very well to get to 280 and then our bowlers backed us up. The exciting thing for us is that we did leave quite a few runs out there, we could have easily got 300-plus.

“We weren’t worried, we’ve got a really long batting line-up. It’s always hard when pace is off the ball going in, but I think one of our top four needs to go on and get that big score. Hopefully in the next few games we’ll go on and get some bigger scores.

“We know they’ve got a really strong batting line-up but we just stuck to our basics, stuck to our plans and get hit to where we want to get hit. We knew that if we got one or two quick wickets we’d be in control.

“It’s nice to get a few runs. I was disappointed with my T20 campaign, so it was nice to get some runs on the board, but again, it’d be nice to go bigger. I think that’s my role, really. I got a bit stuck after 50, but it was nice to contribute with the ball as well.”

The Stars travel to Hove to face Southern Vipers this Saturday with a 10.30am start.

By Richard Latham sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY LOST just their third game as Somerset’s Will Smeed fell two short of a first Vitality Blast century but the visitors made sure of a home quarter-final with a 47-run victory over South Group winners Surrey at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton last weekend.

The 20-year-old opener smashed 10 fours and 5 sixes in his 51-ball innings, sharing a scintillating third-wicket stand of 165 in 12.3 overs with skipper Tom Abell, who hit 70, to help the hosts reach 218 for eight after losing the toss.

In reply, Surrey posted 171, Chris Jordan making a career-best 73, from 35 balls, with 7 fours and 4 sixes, only Laurie Evans (39) offering any meaningful support. Craig Overton returned four for 25.

The result meant Somerset finished runners-up to their opponents in the group. Abell joined Smeed in the fourth over, which had seen Tom Banton run himself out for nine, attempting a second run, and Rilee Rossouw caught in the

deep second ball.

Surrey could feel satisfied at the end of the six-over powerplay, reached with the home side 44 for two.

But the next ten and a half overs saw Smeed and Abell smite 150, clearing the ropes eight times between them. Their partnership also yielded 17 fours.

Smeed brought up a 29-ball fifty in the tenth over and the century stand was completed three overs later from 53 deliveries.

Abell lost nothing in comparison with his partner and moved to a half-century off 27 balls in the 14th over, sent down by Cameron Steel, which cost 23.

Somerset looked on course for 250 until Reece Topley returned to have the captain caught at deep backward square, having faced 51 deliveries, and Smeed followed in the same over, miscuing a catch to deep mid-wicket.

At that point, Somerset were 197 for four with three overs to build. But Topley finished with a creditable two for 26, while Atkinson and Jordan, who claimed three wickets in the final over, ensured only 21 were added.

Surrey made a disastrous start to their innings, Overton having Will Jacks and

Tom Curran caught at mid-on off the second and fourth balls of the opening over.

The seamer followed up by having Jamie Smith taken at slip in the third over to leave the visitors 11 for three.

Evans and Jordan addressed a potentially embarrassing situation with aplomb. When Jordan hit Lewis Gregory for 6,6,4,6 in a ninth over that cost 23, his side were back in the game.

By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH MADE the long journey to Cranleigh for their ninth game in Division 1 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship last weekend, but went down to the

league leaders by 126 runs.

Dulwich put their opponents in to bat, and Simon Harwood and Kamran Munawar bowled tidily, with Harwood taking the first wicket in the ninth over with the score on 20.

This brought together Jack Scriven and South African overseas player Clyde Fortuin, who added 102 for the second wicket in 18.2 overs. Both batsmen completed their half centuries before falling to good catches by Munawar and Ahmed Khan in the same Alex Gledhill

over.

The rest of the innings was dominated

by Bruno Broughton, who made 69 not out off 80 balls. Khan and Frankie Brown had another long spell in tandem and took two wickets apiece.

Cranleigh advanced to a declaration on 257-7 after 57 overs, leaving Dulwich 64 overs to try and get the runs or bat out for a draw.

Brown then opened the batting, and carried his bat for exactly 50 not out, off 144 balls. The Dulwich innings

started promisingly, as Brown shared in partnerships of 19 in 8.4 overs for the first wicket with James Schofield (8), 23 in 7.2 overs for the second with skipper Chris Purshouse (9), and 29 in 8.4 overs for the third with Ollie Steele (14).

But the loss of two quick wickets set them back. Despite brief cameos of 14 off 21 balls by Dan Crowley and 15 off 19 by Chris Harwood, the last eight wickets fell for 58 runs in 27 overs as Dulwich tried unsuccessfully to bat out for the draw, and they were dismissed

for 129 in the 52nd over. Scriven and Fortuin completed a dominating allround performance with 4-49 and 3-29 respectively.

Dulwich took just two points from this match and complete the first half of the season in ninth place, eleven points behind Valley End who have slipped to eighth.

This weekend, they have the first of the return matches when they visit Chipstead Coulsdon and Walcountians, who are currently fifth.

Nana Owusu has joined from Oxford City. Owusu, 26, plays on the left side of midfield and had been at Oxford since 2019. He was their leading scorer in 2019-20.

Ghana-born Owusu lived in Germany and was a youth player at Reading before joining Maidenhead United.

Midfielder James Comley, 31, has made the move to Champion Hill from Boreham Wood.

And attacker George Porter, 30, has linked up with Dulwich from Dartford.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SOUTHWARK AQUATICS Swimming Club have recognised their competitors at an awards night as they again urged people to get involved.

The club enjoyed success in the county and regional championships earlier in 2022 with several swimmers achieving personal bests.

SASC is aiming to grow further and is planning a club championships this September.

Each year, the club gives out Jack Petchey awards to young swimmers whose achievements warrant

recognition.

“The club recently held an awards evening where the efforts of swimmers were recognised. Our May Swimmer of the Month awards went to John Zhou and Millie Ung. They both showed great commitment in training and when representing the club at galas,” SASC said.

“Winners are typically not only achieving swimming success but are also great role models who their peers should look up to.

“Earlier in the year some of our swimmers made it to county and regional championships.

Most swam personal best times, and the experience is something we hope

they repeat often in coming years hopefully making it to the medal podium.

“It’s never too late, or too early, to get into the competitive side of swimming. It is a healthy pastime and shapes people by giving them structured training sessions in a family friendly environment.”

Southwark Aquatics Swimming Club (SASC) continues to expand its membership and is keen to continue to do so. Memberships are still available to swimmers of the relevant standard who wish to swim competitively.

The ‘B’ team played numerous friendlies last season and trained alongside the first team on a regular basis and have begun pre-season in the same manner. “We hope this will be a great stepping stone for young players making the transition from youth to men’s football and can help to continue the tradition of academy players having successful careers either at our club or elsewhere within the senior game.

Riakporhe could face ‘toughest on planet’ Fish beaten in opener johnk@southwarknews.co.uk RICHARD RIAKPORHE is in a two-way tussle with fellow Brit Lawrence Okolie to face “the toughest fighter on the planet”.

Walworth’s Riakporhe, 32, stopped Fabio Turchi in the second round of their bout at Wembley Arena last month to move closer to world title contention.

And now Riakporhe has his eyes on Jai Opetaia, the new cruiserweight world champion after he defeated Mairis Briedis to win the IBF title last weekend despite having his jaw broken in two places.

It is thought Opetaia broke his jaw in the first place in the second round and then suffered a break on the

other side late on in the twelve-round scrap.

His promoter Dean Lonergan was in awe of his fighter.

“Opetaia would have to be considered the toughest fighter on the planet after continuing on from round two with one side of his jaw broken, then the other side broken late in the fight and still winning rounds against a vicious puncher in Briedis,” Lonergan said.

Riakporhe’s eliminator win against Turchi has him right in the frame for what would be the biggest fight of his career.

“I don’t mind any champion,” Riakporhe has said. “I just want to get my hands on one of those belts.”

Lonergan added: “When his injury is healed, I have no doubt he will want

to fight and beat the best in the world to build his legacy.”

“I’m exploring options. Jai’s goal after winning this fight is to win the WBO belt and if the deal is right, and all parties are on the same page, it’s a fight Jai wants.

“Jai has the ambition to unify the division, and given he is now rated the best cruiserweight in the world, that is a reality.”

Riakporhe’s promoter Ben Shalom said: ”We’re very close [to a world title fight]. That was his dream twelve months ago. He’s now on the brink of it. He doesn’t care which one it is.

Former Lions find new homes

alexj@southwarknews.co.uk EX-MILLWALL winger Connor Mahoney is set to sign for Championship rivals Huddersfield Town after he was released by the Lions at the end of the season.

Mahoney, 25, joined Millwall from AFC Bournemouth in 2019 for a fee of £1.1 million. He went on to make 60 appearances for the club, but his time in Bermondsey was ultimately hampered by injuries.

Alan Nixon of The Sun has reported that the winger is now set to join the Terriers, who have offered him a two-year contract.

Elsewhere, Luton Town have confirmed the signing of Luke Freeman, who spent last season on loan at Millwall from Sheffield United.

Freeman, 30, played just one game for the Lions, coming off the bench for just 13 minutes in a debut defeat away at Fulham.

He was subsequently ruled out for the rest of the campaign through injury, and Gary Rowett confirmed that the Lions would not be looking to sign him on a permanent basis.

He has since been released by the Blades, allowing him to join Luton on a one-year deal.

The Lions had arranged for the game to take place at The Den a week and a half before the start of the Championship campaign, but the Hornets have since informed them that they would be unable to participate in the fixture.

Millwall described the development as “extremely disappointing” because “the plans were finalised, the game announced by both sides, and tickets were put on sale.”

The club soon confirmed that they were hoping to arrange a replacement fixture for the same evening. Gary Rowett previously said that the Lions were trying to arrange a home game against foreign opposition, but it remains to be seen as to whether or not such a match will take place.

Millwall’s league match away at Watford on Boxing Day has also been rearranged. While the game will still take place on 26th December 2022, kickoff has now been moved from 3pm to midday.

Rowett joined the Lions in October 2019, succeeding Neil Harris after his four-year spell as manager. The 48-yearold had previously been linked to vacant posts at Watford and Queens Park Rangers, but has now tied down his long term future to the club.

Speaking about his new contract on Millwall’s Recast platform, Rowett explained his delight about the “togetherness” at all levels of the club.

“It’s great that the club want me to keep growing what we’ve done and continue

the development that we’ve had,” Rowett said.

“There have been very few managers over a long period of time, it shows how John [Berylson], the owner, likes to operate.

“And I think we’ve built in a nice, progressive way. From the day I walked in we’ve always tried to elevate our ambitions every season. We’ve always tried to improve what we do every season and hopefully people have seen the team just play slightly differently and continue to get better and better.

“We’ve had three consistent seasons but we want more, that’s our aim.

“I love working at the club, I’ve enjoyed every minute of it so far. I came here because I know what a unique club it is, I know how unique our fans are.

“Last season was fabulous to be part

of. And of course London is an incredible city, so really pleased to be able to continue that work.”

Rowett has led Millwall to three top half finishes since taking over at The Den, with his side ending last season just six points off the playoff places.

He’s keen for the Lions to be ambitious and not settle for “punching above their weight”, indicating that the next step is for them to secure a top six finish.

“It’s always difficult when a team comes out of League One and your first thought then is to try to solidify in the Championship.

“I spoke about it quite a lot since I’ve been here, maybe our feeling was always to look down and see if we can make sure we don’t get dragged into those positions.

“For us it’s been trying to switch that and show what a good side we are and

what good players we’ve got.

“We say to the players we’ve worked hard and deserve to be towards the top end of the table. That’s what we aspire to do.

“It’s not always going to be possible.

There are spells in the season when you’re not doing what you wanted to do.

“But we have a real hunger and desire about this group. Even little things like the training ground, the club have supported a lot of the improvements we’ve tried to make. Staff in the club have supported a lot of the way we’ve tried to move forward with different support for the players.

“We’ve very united at the moment, there is a lot of togetherness between all the layers, the team, the staff, the board, the owner. That’s only going to be positive for this football club.”

Despite playing 35 Championship games last season, the club’s new owner was keen to spend big on new signings after appointing Shota Arveladze as manager in January 2022.

Honeyman, 27, was out of contract at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, although the Tigers triggered a one-year extension in his contract that would seemingly keep him at the MKM Stadium until the end of next season.

But the midfielder knew that Millwall were interested in signing him this summer, and he was determined to see his move to The Den materialise.

“It’s been in the pipeline for a little bit, but like anything, you don’t think it’s going to happen until it’s happened,” Honeyman told the News.

I was unsure about how Hull were going to handle the situation and what they wanted, in terms of keeping me or what they wanted for a transfer fee. So I didn’t really know how it was going to play out.

“Millwall put in a couple of bids and they got it done quite quickly, just because of how keen they were to sign me. That was really good to see all that as a player, to be that wanted.”

Lovelace, 16, joined Millwall from nonleague outfit Glebe in 2019. After scoring 21 goals in 19 appearances for the Lions’ youth teams, he made his first-team debut in December 2019 at just 15-years-old, making him the second youngest player in their history to make a senior appearance.

The forward went on to make another four cameo appearances last season, receiving significant praise for his performances.

Lovelace has since opted to leave The Den, and by moving outside of England, Millwall are due to receive a much lower compensation fee. Jordan Campbell of The Athletic has reported that it will be in the region of £100,000.

“We’ll try to find a blend of what’s right for us and also what’s right for their careers to get them to where they want to be.

Flemming raring to go Millwall’s record signing explains why he joined the Lions

The likes of Nottingham Forest and Italian side Empoli had been interested in signing the 23-year-old, but Millwall won the race to bring him to The Den for a club-record transfer fee of £1.7 million.

It took the Lions three attempts to sign Flemming after seeing bids rejected last summer and in January.

The Dutchman told the News that this ultimately convinced him to make the move to Bermondsey from Fortuna Sittard.

“Millwall put the most effort into signing me. One of the things that I included in my decision was that they were showing concrete interest last summer, came back last winter and

came back again at the beginning of this summer. This was really important for me and gave me a lot of confidence.

“They also weren’t hesitating. They weren’t showing interest and then waiting a week or two, or saying that they needed to sell someone first or have a look around elsewhere. They were just showing interest and going for it straight away.

“It gave such a good feeling that they really wanted me. Other clubs didn’t convince me enough in that way compared to Millwall. They were so quick, so clear and so determined to bring me in.”

As well as being the most expensive player in the club’s history, Flemming was also Millwall’s first signing of the summer transfer window. George Honeyman, Benik Afobe and Charlie Cresswell have all joined the Lions since then, and the Ajax academy graduate explained that he was impressed with how quickly his new

side had managed to get their transfer business over the line.

“Being the first signing can be a little bit scary, you can get a little bit nervous about it because the other signings still have to be completed.

But I had confidence already that they would succeed in that, they did it really quickly as well. I didn’t expect that to be honest!

“It’s been a week since I signed, more or less. But there are a lot of new players in as well who only make our squad stronger.”

Flemming is a versatile player, but explains that his best position is “as a number 10 behind the striker, or in this system behind two strikers”. He prefers it when he’s not leading the line, but instead “arriving later from outside of the box”.

“When I’ve got the space, I like to be able to finish or take my own shot from outside the box. So if a teammate is doing well, I don’t want to be involved in the buildup too

much, but mainly busy in the final third trying to make runs and trying to find spaces.

“I try to score goals in any way actually. It can be from crosses, can be with the head, can be inside the box, can be outside the box and can be with both feet.

“With that, I also hope to give some chances to my fellow attackers to get some assists in there too.”

Despite scoring 12 goals and providing four assists in just 28 Eredivisie matches last season, Flemming isn’t keen on setting personal targets. However, he has a clear idea of what he wants Millwall to achieve in the upcoming campaign.

“The club has been really stable over the past three years, they’ve finished in the top 10 more or less every year.

“My goal is to contribute to making that little next step to try and get into the top six. The more I can contribute the better, so I hope I can play a main role in that.”

Cresswell makes it four for Millwall

Cresswell, 19, joins on a season-long loan from Leeds United after making five Premier League appearances for the Whites last season.

The defender is also an England U21 international, having played six times for the Young Lions in the last year.

Millwall were in the market for a centreback after losing club captain Alex Pearce and Arsenal loanee Daniel Ballard this summer. The Lions were keen to bring the latter back on a permanent deal, but he’s since joined Championship rivals Sunderland instead.

Speaking to the club’s official media channels, Millwall boss Gary Rowett explained that Cresswell has “got so much potential as a player”.

“We’ve seen that playing for Leeds and England’s Under 21s as well. He’s very highly regarded.

“Charlie is a ball-playing centre-half he can go and do all the aggressive things you need him to do, but can also step out with quality and composure.”

Cresswell’s father, Richard, is a former professional footballer who played alongside Rowett at Leicester City in the early 2000s.

“Charlie is coming from a good family,” Rowett explained. “I played with his Dad for two years, so I know he has good work ethic. He will provide brilliant competition for those defensive positions and will be very determined to get in the team and stay in the team.

“His signing is a really exciting one for us and is a quality addition to a squad which is shaping up quite nicely.”

The centre-back made his Premier League debut against West Ham in September 2021.
