PRAISE FOR ‘Crazy, mad ambition’: Tributes paid to departed council bosses Peter John and Eleanor Kelly

Peter John left his post back in 2020, and Eleanor Kelly departed earlier this year.

But their farewell event was postponed until now due to Covid.

Collectively, the pair served the council for over thirty years. In the decade 2010 to 2020, they worked side-by-side, overseeing dramatic changes in Southwark.

After becoming leader of Southwark Labour in 2004, Peter John helped the party to electoral victory in 2010, overturning the Labour-Liberal DemocratConservative coalition.

Ms Kelly sat beside him as chief executive from 2012, after being promoted from deputy chief executive.

Dramatic policies around regeneration, school improvement, apprenticeships and skills training, free healthy schools meals and gym membership followed.

At the event, Peter John said when he entered office he was faced with a “failing adult and social care department” and “didn’t have a housing department”.

He said that 50,000 more people were in employment in the borough since 2010 and his council house building programme had “built more homes in Southwark than anywhere else in the country”.

But Peter John’s housebuilding programme has been highly controversial.

Council colleagues and Tenants’ and Residents’ Association members from local council estates gathered to thank Peter John and Eleanor Kelly for decades of service on Saturday, June 25.

Peter John served as Southwark Labour leader from 2004 and council leader from 2010. Eleanor Kelly was council chief executive from 2012.

Current Council Leader Kieron Williams praised Mr John’s “crazy, mad ambition” and Ms Kelly’s ability to “keep him on the straight and narrow”.

The incumbent Southwark Labour Leader said: “I look back over the decade of Peter John as leader and Eleanor as borough chief executive and it’s not hard to see what change was brought through.

“Burgess Park is a completely different place… and you looked around our council estates when nationally very few people were saying positive things about council estates.

“They didn’t just build council homes but made sure existing council homes got to a

the emptying and demolition of vast council estates like the Heygate and Aylesbury to accommodate new developments.

His critics have also highlighted Labour’s ‘golden goodbye’ scheme and costly legal battles with Aylesbury leaseholders, the legacy of which continues today.

Throughout this period, as chief executive, Ms Kelly’s job was to implement policy programmes and to ensure cooperation between different council departments and partners.

Described by one colleague as “superhuman” she said: “I’ve worked in all sorts of places and Southwark is the best possible place in the best possible world.”

She said Southwark Council was special because councillors and officers “have huge respect for each other, which isn’t the case everywhere”.

Michael Scorer, the Strategic Director of Housing and Modernisation, praised her “remarkable leadership”, saying: “It’s just a shame she’s retiring. She’s got this remarkable ability to steer rather than row and she’s steered us through difficult things.

“We always knew she had her hand on the tiller. Sometimes it was light, sometimes a little firmer.”

Eleanor Kelly is looking forward to spending more time with her daughter and her new part-time role chairing Peterborough’s Independent Improvement Panel.

Peter John said 90% of his work was now as a barrister. He has also worked for Terrapin Group, a public affairs company with developer clients that include Lendlease and Delancey, since December 2020.

Millwall coach launched Bermondsey teen football club to get kids off streets Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A 24-year-old man from Kennington is running a new football club for Southwark kids to help keep them off the streets.

Jean Murungi founded London Community Academy (LCA) with a £1,500 prize he got from an entrepreneurship scheme at the university where he did his football business degree.

Now, a year on, the under-13s boys team has won its division of the South East London and Kent youth league, while one of the players in the girls team has been signed by the West Ham academy. Next year the club will grow to have two age groups for boys and girls under-13s and under-14s.

Although he grew up and lives near Lambeth North Tube station, Jean went to St Michael’s Catholic College in Bermondsey for secondary and sixth form. He said he founded the club because there was little provision for kids in the area when he was growing up.

“The nearest club I went to was Tulse Hill FC - we played in Dulwich Park and that was a long bus journey,” said Jean, who is also a coach for Millwall.

“My mum was a single parent. There were four of us in the house, and she couldn’t commit to taking me to matches on a Sunday. I wanted to make the club accessible in the area I predominantly spent my time in as a kid.

“Most of the boys are ten-fifteen minutes away - it’s more accessible.

Parents know that it’s just fifteen minutes down the road, which is safer than travelling far.”

Jean said that he wanted to create a better programme for the kids he works with than what he experienced growing up. “When I was a kid, we just played on grass, there was training, and you’d just turn up for a match on a Sunday.”

Bermondsey.

As the News reported earlier this month, Rise United co-founder Daniel Alfred helped set up his club “to instil discipline” and keep kids off the streets.

LCA Sports has a similar aim, but perhaps a slightly softer approach. Club welfare officer Sky Yanda said a big part of her job was to understand how the children were feeling.

“As I’ve gotten to know them over the year, I can see how their behaviour changes. Sometimes they come in in a certain mood, and I can overhear conversations when they’re on their little five minute break.

“I’m there to make sure they’re not harming anyone and not being harmed themselves. Even the coaches themselves, if I could see that they’re causing stress on the kid, I would tell them.”

Sky recalled one incident where the parent of one of the boys was worried about their son’s mental health, after they found worrying notes he had written.

“We made it clear we’re all here for him. It’s important to have these chats, let them talk about things. Even if they just want to sit in silence, they can. It’s more than a club, it’s a family.”

Jean runs the club with Sky and two coaches - and they are all volunteers.

But the club still has to charge the kids’ parents a fee to take part.

He said: “We’re looking to get sponsorship, which would allow us to lower fees. We really want to help out more kids in the community, and the end goal is to make it a free-running club.

“One kid who joined us, his parents were struggling to pay the membership, I said for the rest of the season just come for free. This boy’s mum wants to provide everything for her child. I said that’s fine I’ll cover the costs.”

Parents targeted by eco-warriors

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Dulwich parents were left deflated after waking up to find eco-vigilantes had used lentils to let down the tyres on their “gas guzzler” SUVs.

Environmental group Tyre Extinguishers, who say SUVs are “gas guzzlers” and “a disaster for the environment”, struck in the early hours of Tuesday, June 21, and claimed responsibility for the raid soon after.

4x4 drivers were left incensed, with some accusing the environmentalists of wanting to go back to the “times of Roman or Vikings”.

Joanna Guilar (pictured), a mum-of-three from Eynella Road, East Dulwich, whose 4x4 was hit, believes the perpetrators are “absolute a-holes”.

She said: “We have to function! Even if you want to go back to the original times of Romans and Vikings, we need to be able to move around!

After deflating the tyres by shoving lentils in their valves, the group left leaflets under drivers’ windscreen wipers saying: “SUVs are the second biggest cause of rising carbon emissions in the last decade.

This is why we have disarmed your SUV by deflating one or more of its tyres.”

Sophie Delaney, a 38-year-old TV producer and mum-of-one said she was “livid” and that the scheme “hasn’t won them any support”.

Cars stretching from Dulwich Village to Herne Hill, on roads including Stradella, Eynella and Druce, as well as Court Lane, were among those sabotaged.

Sharon, a mother-of-two from Herne Hill, whose electric Ford SUV was targeted said: “They have not cared about the safety element of people potentially driving with flat tyres with children in their cars making the trip to school.”

When the News put this concern to Tyre Extinguishers, the group said: “Most SUVs are fitted with tyre pressure sensors that let the driver know that a tyre is deflated.

“And if the car is actually driven, the noise of the flat tyre will be immediately obvious and we also leave a leaflet. We have had no reports of any accidents.”

Piers Guilar, whose electric SUV was hit, said he found the debacle “vaguely amusing”, especially after finding a lentil sticking out of his tyre valve.

“I’d rather they didn’t do it. It was purely inconvenient and a bit of a pain in the arse but it did no harm”, he said.

He added that they could have “executed it better”, arguing that his 4x4 is ecofriendly because it’s electric and hasn’t needed replacing in the 25 years.

A mum on Druse Road, whose wheels got wrecked, agreed saying: “Mine’s a hybrid so it was pretty dumb of them to do that.”

However, Tyre Extinguishers said: “Hybrids and electric cars are fair game.

We cannot electrify our way out of the

climate crisis - there are not enough rare earth metals to replace everyone’s car and the mining of these metals causes suffering.

“Plus, the danger to other road users still stands, as does the air pollution. PM 2.5 pollution is still produced from tyres and brake pads.”

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “We are aware of a number of incidents of tyres being deflated in the Dulwich Area.

We are grateful for your assistance so far in sharing information with us. If your tyres are slashed or similarly damaged, please don’t hesitate to report it to us via 101, or our website.”

Rotherhithe roundabout traffic lights could give more priority to pedestrians and cyclists

People crossing Jamaica Road by the Rotherhithe roundabout by foot and on bikes should have to wait less long, with Transport for London (TfL) set to introduce an automatic light system.

The crossing just outside the northeastern corner of Southwark Park is notorious for long waiting times for pedestrians, compounded by cars often being still because of traffic on Lower Road and at the Rotherhithe tunnel.

TfL has installed a system at the traffic lights that automatically works out when to change the lights based on real-time demand, as part of the Cycleway 4 works. The pandemic delayed the system being installed, but it should now be up and running by the

The news comes after a local resident raised the road crossing issue with Liberal Democrat councillor Jane Salmon. They added: “As a pedestrian and cyclist it’s particularly annoying as car traffic on the roundabout frequently isn’t moving due to congestion from the tunnel, or is extremely light during the rest of the day.

“Yet despite the fact there’s little actually moving car traffic (there’s plenty of cars not moving), the lights still force cycles and pedestrians to wait very long times and then only provide a short period of time for cycles and pedestrians to actually cross. During the wait time, you’re normally staring at stationary cars, or completely empty road.

“The wait times are so long that many cycles opt to avoid the cycle

path, and instead use the bus lane on Jamaica road, so they can turn left on the roundabout without stopping.

Pedestrians also frequently ignore the lights, because there’s so little traffic, and during congested periods stationary cars are easy to avoid.”

TfL said that they had already made two changes to the lights at the Rotherhithe roundabout crossing over the past year to cut waiting times for pedestrians and cyclists. The transport agency said they would consider making further changes once the new automatic system is working.

It comes as the government gives TfL and boroughs like Southwark more power to fine drivers who drive in cycle lanes, or cross the solid white lines - in the same way as authorities can penalise people who drive in bus lanes and yellow box junctions.

Council ‘correction’ on fire safety report

Bus cuts are Khan’s ‘artificial weapon’ in tfl’s government funding war, says minister

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The council London bus cuts proposed by Transport for London (TfL) are an “artificial weapon” in Sadiq Khan’s battle to get a long-term funding deal from the government, the transport minister has said.

In a letter sent as TfL got a two-anda-half week extension on its financial support deal from the government, Grant Shapps claimed that the bus cuts, which would include four in Southwark are “not necessary and will not save much money.”

The Conservative transport secretary said that bus cuts are supported by revenue subsidy rather than long-term capital funding, - which is what Labour mayor Khan and TfL want.

Shapps said in his letter: “The

companies which operate the threatened routes are bemused at your new and more dramatic proposals, pointing out that several of the routes have seen among the best recoveries of passenger demand in London.

“The chief executive of one of the companies described your plans to us as “making no sense at all... “[The cuts] have been artificially created by you as a political weapon in your campaign for a long-term capital funding deal.

“But, bus operations have little or nothing to do with capital funding - they are supported by revenue subsidy, which the government has provided throughout the pandemic and which it will continue to provide.”

Khan hit back, saying that Conservative cuts to TfL funding in 2015, combined with fare income loss in the pandemic, meant there was “nothing left to cut but

services”.

He added: “The reason a lack of capital funding affects service levels and leads to managed decline is because if you have no money to maintain and renew infrastructure, you have to take money from elsewhere.”

It came as Khan warned that further cuts to Tube and bus services are “imminent”. He added: “Time is running out and that is why I am once again urging the government to meet with me so that we can finally agree a sustainable, long-term funding deal that will protect not only London’s economic recovery, but that of the whole country.”

The London mayor has been invited to Southwark Council’s overview and scrutiny committee meeting on July 6 to discuss the bus cuts with councillors.

Twenty-year-old left fighting for his life after Peckham stabbing

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has made a ‘correction’ after slamming the Marie Curie House fire safety report by Frankham Consulting as “not good enough”.

The council has now clarified that the report was only a “draft” and “not a completed version”. It has now said the report will be completed in July.

In May, residents of Marie Curie House, Sceaux Gardens, Camberwell, were eagerly awaiting a report that would explain why they had unknowingly lived in a block riddled with safety defects, even after the Lakanal House fire tragedy.

When the report emerged, Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “We did commission an independent report, disappointingly, it did not go far enough to address the key questions that we and residents want answers to.

“This is not good enough, and we will be pursuing the full, required report until it is done properly.”

Southwark syphilis ‘epidemic’

Police initially feared the 20-year-old’s wounds could prove fatal, but say his condition is no longer thought to be lifethreatening.

Police were called to Southampton Way, Peckham at 10.30pm last Wednesday week, June 23, to reports of a stabbing.

The man was rushed to a south London

hospital. No arrests have been made as the News went to press.

Southampton Way resident Peter said: “It was chaos. There were lots of police. I think it was something big and the road was closed off.”

According to residents, police remained at the scene until the early hours of the morning. Peter said it worries him because acts of extreme violence often take place “right outside my door”.

Nick Flower, the Chair of the Southampton Way Estate Tenants’ and Residents’ Association said: “It happens

a couple of times a year around here.

There are gangs of teenagers with various different rivalries.

“People find it very upsetting and concerning - it does stress them out.

Especially people who have got teenage boys.”

Nick believes that stabbings happen because of “draconian school exclusions”.

Under the heading ‘correction’ the council wrote: “We would like to make clear that the draft we were given is not the completed version and the report is still being drafted by the consultant and is now expected for completion in July.”

In 2009, a fire at Lakanal House, Sceaux Gardens, Camberwell killed six people and injured at least twenty.

Even though the tragedy sent shockwaves through the nation, its sister block Marie Curie House, was not checked for fire safety defects until a decade later.

Assessments were only carried out after a resident raised the alarm that smoke was moving between different flats.

Subsequent assessments revealed there were numerous defects, including gaps between properties, aging pipes, and issues with risers and bathroom ducts.

The council has been rehousing residents so they can complete fire safety improvements on the block but, due to the huge waiting list, many are still looking for new homes.

The council was approached for comment.

This figure is only surpassed by Lambeth which saw a staggering 147.9 diagnoses per 100,000 people in 2020, although this was down from 174.5 in 2019.

Since 2017, the diagnosis rate in Southwark has been over 100 per 100,000 people. In 2020, the figure stood at 114.7 per 100,000 people, barely down from the 2019 figure of 155.1.

Westminster, Tower Hamlets, Kensington and Chelsea also scored highly, while Havering, Sutton and Barking and Dagenham saw some of the lowest case rates in London.

A 2019 report by Public Health England recognised the UK faced an “epidemic” with 2019 cases the highest since the 1940s.

The report noted that the disease

disproportionately affected gay and bisexual men but also noted “a marked increase” among heterosexuals, particularly UKborn heterosexual women.

Public Health England did report in 2021 that national STI diagnoses decreased by 32% in 2020 compared to 2019.

However, it also noted that faceto-face consultations decreased by 35% and that lockdowns may have reduced STI transmissions.

Comparing 2019 with 2020 figures Southwark saw significant falls in diagnoses of HIV, gonorrhea and chlamydia.

The NHS says people can prevent syphilis by using a condom and making sure any syphilis treatment is complete before having sex.

The sexually transmitted infection can be cured with antibiotics but, if left untreated, can lead to serious and life-threatening problems such as strokes, meningitis and heart problems.

But John’s low-key birthday celebrations should not be taken as a sign that he is content to enjoy the start of his second century quietly.

Speaking from his Southwark Park Road home this week, John had his say on the industrial disputes that have rocked the train services and the Tube, as well as the legal system, with more strikes possibly on the way.

Speaking about striking workers, he said: “I’m with them, obviously.

Oh obviously. The likes of us, it’s not our fault the trouble that’s happening now. And yet they want to cut our wages. Something’s got to happen somewhere.

“We’ve done nothing to deserve it you know. I say ‘we’ because I was always a union man. But I never went on strike for more money, I always went on strike for better conditions.”

John worked as an engineer for the Peek Freans biscuit factory on Drummond Road for much of his career, but, as the News has previously reported, he walked out when told to make redundancies in his team.

“I’m a ‘small c’ conservative, I’ve voted Labour all my life. When I was a kid, jobs were local and you worked hard and you did five and a half days a week. But if you were sick, they came round, they looked after you.

Reflecting on his childhood, John said: “In those days we didn’t have nothing... if you were sick or ill, you’d go to the doctor, who’d charge you half a crown, which the old girl never had.

If you had to go to Guy’s or St Thomas’ you were pushed there - you couldn’t get an ambulance, nothing like that.”

John recalled Alfred and Ada Salter, the husband and wife team who served as MP and mayor of Bermondsey from the 1920s onwards, and helped transform the area for the better.

“Dr Salter, what he did for Bermondsey,” he said. “Him and his wife Ada genuinely wanted to help people. He was genuine you know.”

John never met the Salters. “The only way we knew him was he used to have a bike, with these high handlebars. We used to take the mick out of anyone with a bike.

“We used to see him at the [Methodist] central hall, at the beginning of Bermondsey Street. We used to have the Christmas party, always finish up with a twopenny ha’penny toy. We’d have a cup of lemonade and all that. He was there.”

John still goes to the Ancient Foresters at the other end of Southwark Park Road every week, taking a taxi to and from the pub. He has cut his Guinness intake to a single pint per visit after a fall last year, and says his balance is less good than it was.

But the former footballer, boxer, long-distance runner, cricketer and bowls player said he “was always sporty”, adding: “that’s what kept me relatively young, I suppose.”

Downsized Carnival in August

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey Carnival will take place on August 21 this summer, with organisers calling for volunteers to get involved in this year’s smaller edition.

The longstanding Southwark Park event was not given its usual grant this year, which has stretched to as much as £80,000 in the past - instead getting a £10,000 share of a larger cultural

events fund.

Russell Dryden, who runs the carnival with Phil Burkett, said he had been given a further £5,000 from a donor he declined to name, adding that he was speaking to other local charities in the hopes of getting more funding.

Russell asked for anyone who wants to get involved in putting the carnival on to get involved. “We’re taking it back to the community, and we’re going to form the steering committee again.

“The carnival started like that. As it got bigger the council came in and managed it, but we’re going to bring it back to the community again.”

As well as people to help organise the carnival, which usually features music, food, stalls and fairground rides, Russell said he was looking for any local performers and dance groups who want to take part.

Southwark kids could soon be picking fresh fruit for lunch

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A recent Freedom of Information request submitted by the News has revealed how much each Southwark estate received under the ‘Great Estates Programme’.

‘Great Estates’ was launched by Southwark Council in 2019 and has seen estates receive over £2 million in council funding.

The initiative was part of the council’s drive to challenge “skewered perceptions of inner city estates” by improving their “look, feel and lived experience”, particularly after the Grenfell Fire tragedy.

Speaking at the project’s launch, Cllr Leo Pollak, then Cabinet Member for social regeneration and new council homes, said: “We are incredibly excited to be launching our Great Estates programme, a new way of thinking about, talking about and making decisions about the future of our estates.

“At the heart of this is a new license

for residents to work with the council to help improve the look and feel of the shared spaces in our estates, and a process for upholding new expectations to make sure our estates are safe clean and cared for.

“Our vision is to uphold our council estates as properly privileged parts of the city and we are calling on residents to come forward with new ideas – big and small – for how to improve the shared spaces in their estates.”

The money has so far been used to improve communal bins, plant flowers, keep estates clean and more.

The ‘Allotment Expansion Guarantee’ also provided funds that helped residents set up community allotments on their green spaces.

Funding is allocated to estates on a case-by-case basis. Council officers speak to residents about how their estate could be improved and then approve funding based on what projects they want to do.

Projects suggested by residents and their tenants’ and residents’ associations are then put to an independent panel for approval.

Bin collection company Veolia is offering schools a chance to apply for an orchard of up to five fruit trees to be planted on their grounds.

Schools will find out if they have been successful after July 18. The trees will be delivered in September and October. Kids will plant the trees and look after them.

Schools also have to have their own equipment to plant them.

Population figures show why there is now a drop in school places

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey man who died after jumping into the Thames to save a drowning woman showed a “sheer act of bravery”, an inquest has heard.

Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole - Jimi showed “quite astonishing” courage to jump into the Thames on the way home from work in April 2021, assistant coroner Dr Julian Morris said at Inner London Coroner’s Court.

Concluding, Dr Morris said: “This was a sad loss of a young man who wanted to help, in an emergency, a member of the public who had fallen into the Thames.”

“The courage to jump to help a complete stranger in the Thames at night is quite astonishing.

“Many of us would like to think we would do the same in that situation, but few of us would have the courage and determination.”

Giving evidence at the inquest, detective sergeant Stefan Yiannaki, of the City of London Police, said: “It was a sheer act of bravery trying to help the woman and losing his life in the process.”

Fellow rescuer Joaquim Garcia was hauled out alive by police along with the woman, but Jimi’s body was not found for another six hours. A postmortem examination found that he died by drowning.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The number of children under fifteen living in Southwark fell by about four per cent over the past ten years, new figures show - even as the overall population rose.

Nearly 50,400 children under the age of fifteen lived in the borough in 2011, according to the census from that year. But that figure dropped to 48,500 in March 2021, an analysis of new ONS figures shows.

It comes after the News reported last week that sixteen Southwark schools were in budget deficit because of falling admissions numbers, with a further school having already closed in 2021.

This may be partly related to families leaving the UK because of Brexit or the Covid-19 pandemic, and because of unaffordable housing and the growing cost of living in a borough with an already-high level of deprivation.

pressures, had a comparable drop, with about 51,800 children under the age of fifteen in 2011, falling to 45,700 in 2021.

Southwark’s entire population rose by around seven per cent over the past decade, according to the same ONS survey. Southwark’s overall population increase put the borough roughly in the middle of London’s 32 local authorities for population growth between 2011 and 2021 but below average for the capital as a whole, whose population rose by 7.7 per cent over the period.

The populations of three innerLondon boroughs actually fell over the decade, with nearly ten per cent fewer people in Kensington and Chelsea in 2021 than in 2011. Westminster’s population dropped by nearly seven per cent, while the number of people living in Camden was down by nearly five per cent.

The population of Tower Hamlets, in east London, rose the most, at an astonishing 22.1 per cent over the

decade. Greenwich, Newham, the City of London and Barking and Dagenham made up the rest of the top five for population growth.

But London Councils, the body that represents all local authorities in the capital, sounded a note of “extreme caution” over the new figures, because the survey was done largely online during the pandemic.

London Councils said they were worried that because funding for services is often given out based on population, any undercount may result in fewer people getting the care they need. Cllr Georgia Gould, the organisation’s chair, said: “It’s a bitter irony that it’s often the Londoners with the lowest census response rates who most depend on local authority support – but even small inaccuracies in population counts can seriously undermine future service provision.

“We are concerned that, without looking at the data in the context of the challenges the pandemic created, Londoners will lose out.”.

Walk in the ‘Rite’ direction

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey man has set up the area’s second men’s mental health group, based mostly in Southwark Park.

The Walking in the Rite Direction group walks around the park twice a week.

Founder Warren Mack, who is from nearby Southwark Park Road, set up the group in March this year.

A veteran of the Proper Blokes Club, the SE16 area’s other walking group, which has been featured in the News, Warren said his group was smaller and more targeted.

Warren said he takes his small regular group of men out to a cafe once a week to check in with them, and has regular phone calls with them. He also brings therapists on the walks, who can offer professional advice. “Sometimes just talking isn’t enough - you’ve got to be

talking about the right things. I want to get deep with people, I want to have that closer connection. These guys are my friends,” he said.

“We only walk around Southwark Park because I wanted it to be inclusive. We’ve got guys that can’t necessarily walk that far and I don’t want them to be left behind.

When I lead a walk I lead from the back of the walk.”

Warren also shares other mental health advice and resources on his Facebook page. “I want that to be a yellow pages for men’s mental health,” he said.

The group isn’t just targeted at men: there is a mixed walk in Greenwich Park on Saturdays, where people can also bring their children. Warren said this walk will also visit other local parks in future. Meanwhile his daughter, who turns eighteen in a few weeks, will also be organising a walk in Blackpool.

Feel Good Festival is the brainchild of local parent Shazna Choudhry, who was devastated by the impact Covid-19 had on the mental and physical well-being of her community.

Shazna said: “When lockdown hit, I saw the loneliness of my elderly neighbours, the isolation of our children, the difficulty of accessing health care.

“Now post-Covid, it is wonderful to see the community coming together in our Feel Good Festival to improve everyone’s wellbeing.”

As well as the wellbeing sessions, Partnership Southwark is pitching up a health tent where people can get mini health checks. There will also be a Covid-19 vaccination hub.

the Blue is in need Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey local business group has called for Southwark Council to find tenants for the empty shops around the Blue marketplace that have stood unused for years.

There are at least eight shops on Southwark Park Road that appear out of use. Three are Southwark Council properties. The council said one is let to a long-term tenant and the other has an interim tenant while officers look for a long-term tenancy, although all three appear vacant.

The Blue is the subject of intensive ‘regeneration’, getting more than £2 million from London mayor Sadiq Khan for the revamp in 2018. Changes to

the marketplace itself included a new clocktower, stalls and canopies.

But the new-look marketplace is not matched by Southwark Park Road, the street that runs past it and provides the main point of access.

Russell Dryden, who manages the Blue Bermondsey BID, which is running the regeneration, said that landlords like the council should be encouraging people to set up pop-up shops, possibly paying a lower rent for shorter periods of time, if they could not find longer-term tenants.

“Most have been an eyesore for many years and create negative perceptions of the Blue. Landlords and leaseholders must surely hold a responsibility to maintain their shopfronts and premises to a respectable standard.

“The BID has been lobbying the council since our founding to do something about this and if no secure tenant could be found

to allow pop up shops.” Mr Dryden said he had not heard back from the council.

He went on: “As is well documented, in the last decade there has been a major problem with retail shops closing nationwide and areas that have reinvented themselves, have used pop ups to embrace arts and culture and helped transform their high streets into places of interest and engagement to encourage more ‘dwell time’ and above all, more spend. We want to see this approach adopted for the Blue.”

But it is unclear if pop-up shops, which

are transitory by nature, are the answer.

One of the council-owned properties standing empty is Bermondsey Uprising, which is in the former Santander branch.

The indoor market and community space opened in 2018 with ten weeks of funding from the United St Saviour’s charity. But Bermondsey Uprising, named after a famous women’s strike led by former Bermondsey mayor Ada Salter in the early twentieth century, has not been replaced since closing.

Cllr Martin Seaton, Southwark’s cabinet member for jobs, business

and town centres, said: “We agree that meanwhile uses for vacant properties can bring a great many benefits for the local community and are always open to exploring this as an option where possible. Across the borough, we have a number of empty properties working as pop-ups for creative industries, start-ups and community initiatives.

“Of the three properties on Southwark Park Road that belong to the council, one is already let as a meanwhile use and another remains let to a long-term tenant.

We are actively marketing the third property with a new letting campaign and depending on the result, we will keep the possibility of a meanwhile use under consideration...

“We know how important it is that town centres and high streets remain vibrant spaces that contribute to the prosperity and cohesion of our local communities. Under our new council plan, we will commit to investment in all of Southwark’s high streets through a new fund, and in particular, further major improvements to The Blue town centres.”

Ada is the centrepiece of the new mural. Mr Butler added: “The reason she and Alfred moved to Bermondsey was to help the people and improve their environment and improve their conditions. In the end although in his lifetime Alfred was much more famous, it was Ada who actually emerged as in some ways a more important figure. She was the first female mayor in London, and she had contact with people all over the world. She knew Lenin.

“She went to big conferences about helping people to improve their conditions in other cities. People from all over Europe visited Bermondsey because of the incredible work she did.”

Asked if it was difficult to include Ada but not her husband, Paul said: “Yes, in a way, but Ada was really focused on Bermondsey, whereas Alfred had a wider focus. She was one of the first environmentalists in a way. There’s a saying ‘Give them bread and roses.’ It’s not enough just to give people bread, they need roses. She gave them trees by the thousands.”

Something that came out in the artists’ research was that local people wanted important recent figures included, like Hannah Orchard who ran a vegetable stall, Flo Weller who sold flowers, Russell in his white coat and Dora Dixon-Fyle, a councillor and former Southwark mayor.

Also included is the mother of Kathleen Heather, who runs the Bermondsey pantry food bank.

“I saw Kathy walking past a few times when I was working on the mural,” Paul said. “I spontaneously rushed up to her with a paintbrush and said ‘Can you give me a hand?’ She laughed and we got talking.”

Other figures in the mural are invented.

Paul said he found it “hugely enjoyable to bring figures to life”. One woman with a large nose at the bottom is based on a woman Paul met in the Blue. “She may not feel like it’s a good likeness!”, he joked.

The mural is painted with Keim paint, which is “incredibly durable,” Paul said.

“There are murals painted with Keim

that are well over 100 years old.”

Designing a mural of this kind is particularly difficult because of the artificial perspective. “I’ve had a lifetime’s experience, but I still struggle,” Paul said.

“It’s one of the things people don’t really appreciate about murals. For example, the docker on the top left, you’re looking up at the top half of his body then when you look at his feet you’re looking down.

“And the scales involved are enormous Russell’s head is over five foot, getting on

for two metres.”

The whole project was organised by the Bermondsey Blue BID, which is run

by Russell, and had funding from Sadiq Khan. Russell said: “It’s beautiful - if that can’t make you happy I don’t know what will!”

The project was originally meant to take place by John Bull arch on Southwark Park road, but a survey found that it had too much bomb damage to be viable.

Who are the people in the mural?

The top section is the dockers. Below them to the left is Flo Weller, who ran a flower stall in the Blue. The white-haired woman in blue is former Bermondsey mayor Ada Salter. To the right of her is Cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle. Running down the left-hand side are people working in the canning factor.

Bermondsey history is now standing tall

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A fifty-foot tall mural commemorating the people of Bermondsey and the area’s rich history has been completed by the Blue market place.

The mural, which is on St James’ Road on the corner of Drappers Way, was painted by famous mural artist Paul Butler, and depicts the history of the area, from the dockers at the top, to pioneering socialist mayor Ada Salter in the middle, to present-day Blue legend, fishmonger Russell Dryden at the bottom - and plenty more besides.

The mural - officially called the Blue Bermondsey People’s Mural - was finished on Saturday, June 18, after years of work by Paul, his partner Linda James, local artists and others. That work included research, going into local schools to discuss the mural, designing, and finally two months of painting.

Mr Butler, who also painted the famous mural commemorating the Battle of Cable Street against local fascists in the 1930s, said: “I would like to make the point that Bermondsey is an extraordinary place, because it was very significant in the industrial revolution. The local people are proud of that history - and they ought to be proud of it. The first canning factory in the world, the biggest biscuit factory, a huge tanning industry, the docks - these are things that should be remembered.

“We wanted to celebrate the people and also the fact that people have worked in these huge industries and made a hugely significant contribution to the industrial revolution. It created great wealth but also a great deal of suffering. There is no question that Bermondsey was very poor at the end of the nineteenth century and the start of the twentieth.”

As is well-documented, Ada Salter came to Bermondsey with her husband, the doctor Alfred, and became mayor. In office, she transformed the area, building housing, planting trees, and improving local residents’ quality of life. This year is the hundredth anniversary of her

Anger as plaque to matriarch of market was moved ‘to stop builders from trashing it’

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A plaque on a planter commemorating beloved flower seller Flo Weller was moved from the Blue marketplace to stop builders from throwing it away.

The plaque was put up in 2012 to commemorate Ms Weller, who died in 2011 and sold flowers in the Blue for more than sixty years.

But some local residents have been up in arms on seeing that the planter with the plaque on was recently moved to the junction of Blue Anchor Lane and St James’ Road.

Russell Dryden, the fishmonger in the marketplace and the man behind the transformation of the Blue, said the planter was moved to stop builders from damaging it while renovating the marketplace.

“They were going to trash it, but we stored it and reinstated it up there.

We kept Flo’s plaque on it.”

Mr Dryden pointed out that there is a sign next to the planter giving people directions to the Blue. “You know what people are like. Oh where’s Flo?... I quite like it [on St James’ Road], it gets the word out, it spreads it out there.”

Mr Hughes spoke about Flo and her family’s involvement in and around Bermondsey for well over a century, before reciting a poem written by Flo’s granddaughter.

Preston Benson, the company’s founder, said that they wanted to build the new second floor without having to demolish anything, but a survey revealed that the current first floor was not structurally sound enough to take the extra storey. Work is set to begin in the second half of this year.

Some people have expressed concern that the cinema might not be accessible to local people. Really Local Group is running a survey to find out what films locals want to see in the cinema, as well as what the rest of the space could be used for.

Several hundred people have replied so far, over the month that the survey has been running, but Mr Benson said he was worried that the outreach wasn’t

reaching everyone. “There is a certain segment of the community that really likes filling in forms,” he said.

We reported in 2020 that the cinema could have tickets for as cheap as £6.50, and other cinemas run by Really Local Group have ticket prices around that level. Speaking two years on, Mr Benson said he hoped that the Blue cinema could have £6 tickets, but they couldn’t commit to setting prices yet. “We want to keep our ticket prices reasonable,” he said.

There would be a gap in the market for an affordable cinema in the area.

Other cinemas nearby include the Surrey Quays Odeon and Kino Bermondsey where prices are considerably higher. An adult ticket at Kino Bermondsey costs £15, while Surrey Quays Odeon is £13.

Mr Benson said: “It’s really exciting we’re working as fast as we can.”

Mother of the House, MP harman says labour’s next leader should be a woman

The veteran Labour MP for Camberwell and Peckham, who plans to stand down after the next general election, also opened up about her husband’s death in an interview broadcast nationally.

Talking about women’s role in politics, the Mother of the House said: “As and when we do in the far distant future have a leadership election, it has got to be a woman the next time round because it’s just downright embarrassing that the Conservatives have had two and we haven’t even had a woman leader in Opposition, let alone a woman Prime Minister.

“I think it’s partly because women in the Labour Party are more subversive than the women in the Conservative Party. The women in the Conservative Party tend to work with men without challenging them in quite the way we do.”

Talking about the death of her late husband, Jack Dromey, the ex-

Labour MP and union boss who died suddenly of heart failure six months ago, she said she has to “crack on” as it’s what Jack would have wanted.

Asked by interviewer Gloria De Piero how she was coping with her loss, she said: “I’m not entirely sure what the answer to that question is because it’s just six months since he died, and he died absolutely suddenly, out of the blue.

“I feel that widowhood is something that happens to most women who’ve married or have got a partner, widowhood does happen to them. But there’s a real mystery to me in terms of…how do you kind of go forward in your life?

“My mum lived until she was 100 and I might have another 30 years.

So, I can’t be like, ‘Well because Jack has died, my life is over.’

But Ms Harman told GB News in the interview being screened on Thursday afternoon, how she was trying to carry on with her life. “I’ve got children, I’ve got grandchildren, I’ve got my constituents, so in a way I’ve got no option but what they describe as ‘crack on’,” she said.

“And the argument is that legally, because we are at 50%, we can no longer do it. It’s about redressing inequality and you can’t do it if you’ve reached that equality. But actually, we could still do it and I think we should.

Police called after man is found dead in Southwark Park

It is believed that a man may have taken his own life after his body was found in the early hours of last Thursday morning in Southwark Park.

John Apelgren, 79, was arrested last Wednesday week, June 22) and charged the same day with murdering Eileen Cotter (pictured) in 1974, when he was in his early 30s.

Ms Cotter was just 22 when her body was found in front of some garages behind Hamilton Park in Highbury, in north London, on June 1 that year. The cause of death was strangulation.

The murder investigation at the time did not result in anyone being charged.

Apelgren, of Bryden Close, was also charged with indecent assault of a different woman in 1972.

Police have said the death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious. The man’s next-of-kin has been informed. A post-mortem examination will take place as soon as possible.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The unnamed man was found by a dog-walker in the Bermondsey park at about 4.30am on Thursday June 23. Police and ambulance crews were called and pronounced the man dead.

A spokesperson for the Met said: “Police were called at 04:42hrs on Thursday, 23 June to reports of an unresponsive man in Southwark Park, Hawkstone Road.”

“Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended. The man was pronounced dead at 05:05hrs.”

Peckham fly-tipper caught

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A man who dumped rubbish at a site off Bianca Road, Peckham has been slapped with a £480 fine and ordered to pay £3,777 in costs, according to the Environment Agency.

A report from the government agency said Brian Ward, 21, of The Gardens, Bessbrook, Northern Ireland, pleaded guilty at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, June 17, to three charges of unlawfully depositing waste.

People had accessed the site by breaking F.A.A.

The rubbish was dumped when the residents were evicted, according to the agency.

A second man, Patrick Ward, 50, of Dobsons Way, Bessbrook, Newry, also pleaded guilty to one charge of knowingly causing the unlawful depositing of waste at an illegal waste site at Herringham Road, Charlton. He was fined £480 and ordered to pay a £48 victim charge.

The Environment Agency says Patrick Ward, 50, was rumbled after CCTV caught a vehicle owned by him laden with rubbish entering a site and then emerging without the waste.

A second Patrick Ward, 26, of St. Marys Street, Newry also pleaded guilty to three charges of knowingly causing waste to be unlawfully deposited at an illegal waste site at Pensbury Place, Wandsworth, London. He was also fined £480.

The prosecutions were made possible by the Environment Agency’s Operation Angola, an ongoing investigation into people who fly-tip in the South East of England.

Sean Coleman, Environment Manager for the Environment Agency, said: “These prosecutions along with others from Operation Angola, sends out a strong message that we will search out and

prosecute anyone found to be dumping waste illegally.

“We’re pleased that our hard work has resulted in securing these convictions.

Operation Angola has now secured 20 convictions.

“Illegally depositing waste at illegal waste sites without regard for the environment and the law blights communities and undermines the legitimate businesses that follow the rules.”

Southwark is among the worst local authorities in the country for fly-tipping – out of more than 300 – according to government data.

The borough ranks eleventh per 1,000

people among all 333 local authorities in the UK, with 21,386 incidents from April 2020-March 2021.

Under Operation Angola, since 2017, Environment Agency investigators and partners either have or are currently investigating or prosecuting a total of 23 offenders.

The Environmental Services Association has estimated that illegal waste activity costs over £1 billion annually in England.

Girl who had first-of-its kind heart surgery as a baby now taking GCSEs

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A girl whose life was saved by first-of-its kind heart surgery at Evelina London is now taking her GCSEs.

Annabelle Gardiner, 16, was born with a condition that meant the left side of her heart did not develop properly.

When she was just three weeks old she became the first child in the UK to have the hybrid procedure - an operation that helps the heart to work until a baby is strong enough for complex open heart surgery.

Without surgery, babies with the condition can die within days or weeks of being born.

Annabelle then had another operation at six months and a third in 2012 when she was six.

Now she is taking seven GCSEs and likes horse-riding, tap dancing and swimming.

Annabelle said: “I feel extremely lucky that I was the first person in the UK to have the procedure. I think it’s really cool and it’s something I enjoy telling my friends.

“I try to live my life to the full and I don’t let my heart condition get in the way of doing the things I enjoy. I love swimming, tap dancing and horse riding, which I’ve been doing since I was six years old.

“I’m a big fan of K-Pop and my favourite band is BTS and my dream is to see them perform live in Las Vegas. I don’t yet know what I want to do when I grow up, but I’m

interested in the media and photography and I would love to do something in those areas.”

Annabelle’s mum Amanda said: “It’s amazing seeing how far Annabelle has come. Her doctors have always encouraged us not to wrap her up in cotton wool and we have never treated her any differently. She is so full of life and is such a brave feisty girl. It’s incredible that she is doing her GCSEs given her

very difficult start in life. We’re extremely thankful to the team at Evelina London for the care she received. They gave her a lifeline.”

Annabelle’s operation was led by Professor Shak Qureshi, a cardiologist, and Professor David Anderson, a heart surgeon. She still has yearly check-ups with Prof Qureshi. Both men said they were delighted with the progress she had made.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The Dean of Southwark has thanked the young people who created a street art installation for Southwark Cathedral saying it “inspires me to pray”.

Young people from churches all over South East London gathered for ‘Together’, an event reconnecting young people who spent time away from their friends during the pandemic.

Participants, aged thirteen to eighteen, had the choice between football, music or street art workshops. Some, like Anna, reached straight for the spray can.

Aged fourteen, from Lewisham, Anna said the theme of ‘Together’ made her think of her generation’s battle to save the planet. She said: “I sprayed the phrase ‘stronger united’ as well as symbols like

the Extinction Rebellion symbol and the peace symbol.”

Anna said she was so committed to environmental causes that she’d banned her family from buying anything containing palm oil - even chocolate spread.

“After we did the street art we all went to a room where we listened to the song the music group had composed and had a really fun bingo and had pizza and drinks. It was really good!”, she said.

The art was created by spraying symbols, words and patterns onto large sheets which were then shrunk down onto A0 canvases and hung up inside the cathedral.

Andrew Nunn, Dean of Southwark said: “Art created by the Woolwich Youth Forum on display at Southwark Cathedral inspires me to pray. God of our unity, may we always live as one family.

Amen.”

Keli Bolton, Mission Support Officer for Southwark Diocese said: “Our young people always blow me away. They are so creative and care so much about what is happening in the world.

“It’s vital for the church to hear their voices because they are the ones who know how to navigate what’s happening right now - the climate is a big thing.”

Keli agreed with the Dean that art had spiritual qualities: “We are all wired differently but there is creativity in everyone.”

“People who talk about art say ‘it really brought something out’. I don’t make the distinction between that and prayer. It connects with you on a different level”, she said.

Roughly twenty young people collaborated to create the pieces which were hung up until Monday, June 20.

Four fire engines were called to reports of a fire at a five-roomed, split-level flat on Lordship Lane on Sunday June 26.

Firefighters battled the blaze at the terraced property for over one-hour-anda-half, finally bringing it under control at 3.42am.

Six people left the building before the fire brigade arrived, two of which were assessed on the scene by London Ambulance Service.

Firefighters believe it was caused by ‘an unattended candle’ and are urging people to be careful using candles, incense and oil burners.

Kensington and Chelsea was deemed the best London borough for astrology, while Croydon is the worst, according to The Paint Shed’s study.

The independent paint retailer compared different areas’ air pollution, light pollution and rainfall, all factors that can hinder views of the night sky.

Although Southwark Council aims to make the borough carbon neutral by 2030, it is currently being let down by its high air and light pollution.

In March, the News reported that some air quality monitoring stations were recording nitrogen dioxide levels of 51 µg/m3, more than five times the level the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) guidelines.

High traffic, industrial activities such as the nearby SELCHP waste incinerator and the high density of people using energy in the borough are all key causes of air pollution.

Light pollution is also an inevitable by-product of living in a central London borough. This year Southwark council announced they were replacing 17,129 street lights with LED lighting.

The council says this will reduce light pollution and carbon dioxide emissions while helping to improve

Saving the buses is about helping the poorest, most vulnerable

L

ike so many locally I was optimistic when Sadiq Khan became Labour’s London Mayor after eight years of Boris Johnson’s farce.

The fact Sadiq was a South London “son of a bus driver” who said he cared about the poorest and most vulnerable, even encouraged me to lend him my second preference vote.

Both Boris and Sadiq are now failing South London. We have a Labour Mayor that is imposing some of the most dreadful cuts to vital services (1 in 4 of the AXED bus routes are here in Southwark), that will hurt our most vulnerable neighbours first and hardest.

This is all combined with a Tory Government using TfL’s funding as a political football. I would never vote Tory but I’m ashamed to have voted for Sadiq. It is also deeply undemocratic that Sadiq Khan waited until after the local elections to raise this issue, denying you a democratic chance to demand better.

Southwark Liberal Democrats are leading the fight to Save South London Buses, halt these cuts and get a fair funding deal from Westminster.

Our campaign to stop the proposed South London bus cuts is about supporting the poorest and most vulnerable in our borough. As a borough, Southwark is in the middle of a cost-of-living and climate emergency.

It’s why we desperately need cheaper

and greener transport, like buses.

In London, the poorest households are scandalously the ones facing the highest levels of exposure to dangerous and killer air pollution. Yet, the Labour London Mayor has proposed to cut London buses by up to 20%.

This will be a gutting and devastating move for South London residents. It will also make Southwark more of a public transport black hole than it already is.

Sadiq wants to axe the 12, 45, 78 and 521, which provide vital services to our neighbourhood and connections to five hospitals: London Bridge Hospital, Guy’s Hospital, St Thomas’s Hospital, Evelina Children’s Hospital and King’s College Hospital.

Why is our Labour Mayor making it harder for people to access vital healthcare services?

These cuts are just the latest hammer blow to communities already let down

by Sadiq’s neglect and mismanagement.

It’s all very well that Labour politicians are locally campaigning to save their local bus from their own party (!), but they didn’t tell us Beeching style cuts were on the cards when we went to vote a month ago.

Sadiq doesn’t even listen to his Southwark Labour colleagues. The Labour Mayor has kicked the muchneeded Bakerloo line extension into the long grass. He paused the Rotherhithe-to-Canary-Wharf Bridge and scrapped the RV1, London’s

Instead, he has made sure we are stuck with his dirty, polluting and unpopular £2bn Silvertown Tunnel, a new motorway under the Thames.

TfL argue that our buses have a lot fewer passengers. But, recent official data shows this isn’t so. Southwark passenger levels were 81% of pre-pandemic levels in May 2022.

Across London, usage has regularly increased to close to 90%. Sadiq is damaging our covid recovery.

Southwark Liberal Democrats have demanded that the Mayor defend his cuts and answer questions at the July meeting of the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee (OSC). If he bothers to turn up, we will grill him on the impact that these cuts will have on Southwark’s poorest and most vulnerable.

Southwark Liberal Democrats have also written to the Mayor to ask him to stop the cuts, scrap the Silvertown Tunnel, and invest in existing and alternative South London transport like the Bakerloo line. We want him to extend his consultation on the cuts to cover the whole summer and to hold public meetings so he can

une weather was unusual - warm and breezy, then temperatures climbed to 34°C mid-month (unheard of in early summer) before dropping back to around 21°C and bringing surprisingly cold night-time temperatures.

And after June’s changeable weather it is difficult to know what conditions to expect in July. The Summer Solstice fell on 21st June and is now behind us – and so everything is growing quickly - this means a busy time in the gardening calendar. During warm weather plants need very regular watering, especially those in containers and window boxes. Weed growth is supressed in the heat but as soon as it rains - they pop up everywhere.

There are two key tasks to be done in the July garden – planting autumn

flowering bulbs and maintaining roses.

Roses always need attention and in the summer months this consists of regular deadheading, checking for diseases and aphids - spraying with an organic treatment if there is an infestation.

Regular feeding improves plant health and flowering; apply a liquid feed either seaweed or well-rotted compost around the base of the shrub; this also helps conserve water during hot spells.

It is worth planting autumn flowering bulbs – they provide interesting, delicate flowers at a time when many plants are dying back. There is the tiny scented Cyclamen - always a favourite and also Colchicum. The unusual bulbs include Crocus goulimyi with delicate two-tone purple flowers; Queen Olga’s snowdrop, (similar to the winter snowdrop) and the winter daffodil Sternbergia lutea which has golden cup shaped flowers.

The July garden is a delight – with a mix of flowering shrubs, herbs, perennials and annuals in bloom. Many medicinal plants flower at this time such as St John’s wort (Hypericum) used

by Herbalists to treat depression and other conditions. Hypericum has bright golden flowers that glow in sunlight.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) produces startling intricate and unusual blooms; this plant is used by Herbalists to treat anxiety and insomnia. Achillea or Yarrow is a perennial wildflower with lovely tall feathery foliage and compact flower heads. Progress should be led by locals

O

ur special feature this week on Bermondsey’s Blue marketplace shows the good and the not so good about the £2m ‘regeneration’ of the market and the wider area.

On the one hand, the new cinema and cultural centre is an unalloyed good thing, both in itself and for the wider area. The possibility of £6 tickets for film screenings, a third or less of what is on offer down the road at Surrey Quays Odeon, will be a huge bonus for local people when it opens next September.

The cinema may also draw others down from the ‘Bermondsey’ that is perhaps better known to outsiders and newcomers - the area around Jamaica Road, Tooley Street and the Tube station - and bring custom to other local shops and market stalls.

Meanwhile the massive new mural on St James’ Road is a good local landmark and will help with what urban planners call ‘placemaking’ - establishing and representing the character and identity of a neighbourhood - alongside the clocktower in the marketplace itself, put up last year.

As with all ‘regeneration’ projects, the questions are - do these improvements and adornments come at the expense of local people, or are they for them? How much change do we want, and how quickly do we want it? And who is this imagined group of ‘local people’ anyway?

The removal of the plaque commemorating Flo Weller, who sold flowers in the Blue for decades, to a corner facing St James’ Road, symbolises some people’s concerns about the changes. Is traditional old Bermondsey getting pushed out?

Russell Dryden, who is at the forefront of the Blue regeneration through the BID, said this week that his attitude was that “you can’t stop progress, as long as local people are at the forefront of change.”

In any case, change is only coming at a certain pace, as we can see from the array of empty shops in Southwark Park Road, the street adjoining the Blue. The idea of getting pop-ups run by artists to fill the shops is welcome, but do these artists exist? And how to convince the landlords other than Southwark Council that this is a good idea, when they are so hard to track down themselves?

As these issues illustrate, the problems facing the Blue will not just be fixed overnight. They are part of a wider malaise affecting the country as a whole: the decline of high street shopping as more and more people buy things online. But places like the Blue still have great value, and local people like Mr Dryden, as well as the council, should be praised for trying to preserve them, even if we wish they could do more.

spotlight on Windrush legacy - nurse hazel Hazel Burke arrived in the UK in 1955, one of thousands of Caribbean men and women who came to post-war Britain to help rebuild a nation shattered by war.

Although she passed away in 2020, her story lives on through her grandson John Batteson, Labour Councillor for Newington Ward, writes Herbie Russell...

“She was very caring and could also be very funny. She was a very big influence on me and everyone in our family - an amazing woman”, John says.

Hazel was born in 1934 in Port Antonio, the picturesque maritime capital of Portland, a state in the northeast corner of Jamaica. John said: “They were probably from pretty moderate means. She was one of seven brothers and sisters who either went to London or America.”

With a labour force gutted by the horrors of World War Two, Britain need skilled labour. Major British industries were in desperate need of maintenance and repair work and there were serious shortages in the construction sector.

Staff were also needed to run the trains and the NHS. A qualified nurse, and fully-fledged British citizen under the 1948 British Nationality Act, Hazel arrived in the UK in 1955. She came by boat, landing at British shores just seven years after the HMT Empire Windrush made its famous voyage across the Atlantic.

As equal subjects of the British Empire, the Caribbean people who came to Britain expected equal treatment.

Instead, they were often the victims of both veiled and explicit racism.

Papers revealed that Prime Minister Clement Attlee had enquired about preventing the HMT Empire Windrush’s embarkation. He even suggested the boat be diverted to East Africa where the passengers - qualified electricians, plumbers and machinists - could work picking peanuts.

Winston Churchill, once again Prime Minister in the early 1950s, even suggested making “Keep Britain White” an electoral slogan, according to one BBC documentary. ‘KPW’ graffiti could be seen daubed on the walls of some UK streets.

John Batteson said: “She and my mum would often speak about the overt racism - like walking down the street and people shouting at her. She always thought of herself as Jamaican so it’s hard to say how British she thought of herself as.

“There were challenges to things like housing. When she first came here there was overt racism whereas now the racism people go through is structural racism in organisations and social structures.”

Despite these obstacles, Hazel settled in Crystal Palace and later Hither Green, having a distinguished career as a nurse.

She even ended up managing care homes, all while raising four children as a single mother.

Her grandson said: “She was a nurse and then later on in life went into care.

That’s why she came - to work. One of her cousins who is now back in Jamaica worked on the London Underground.

“She loved looking after people and she was good at it. She was a people person. I saw it first hand when she was looking after elderly people in the care home. She was a great cook and would cook jerk kitchen and Jamaican food for all the people who lived there.”

When John was born, Hazel insisted on rushing down from London to Tonbridge Wells to meet her first grandson. John says she was an “amazing” grandmother and that she had a “unique relationship with all her grandchildren”.

Hazel had a vibrant community of friends and family around her through both her Church and the family and friends who had also emigrated from the Caribbean. “She had lots of brothers and sisters and if you count the cousins, up to twenty siblings. People came over from the islands and even if they weren’t family, they felt like family. She had lots of friends from the islands who she would call aunties and uncles.”

But in 2018, the Windrush Scandal broke after it emerged that Caribbeans

who had legally arrived in the UK were being threatened with deportation and, in some cases, successfully deported.

On arriving in the UK, they were often not given any official documentation. In 2010, the Home Office even destroyed landing cards.

Hazel was not directly affected because somebody from her church had advised her to get a passport but the scandal had a lasting impact on her. “I think she was outraged by it”, said John.

“She went to one of the Windrush memorial days in Westminster Abbey with my aunties and mum. It definitely hit her. I think it felt like a personal

This monument tells that story of hope, determination, a strong belief in self and a vision for the future.

“It acknowledges and celebrates the Windrush generation’s outstanding contribution and has been created as a permanent place of reflection, to foster greater understanding of the generation’s talent, hard work and continuing contribution to British society.”

Prince William, government minister Michael Gove and chair of the Windrush commemoration committee Floella Benjamin were all at the unveiling last Wednesday week morning , June 22.

Plans for a monument to the ‘Windrush generation’ – named after the ship that carried some of the new arrivals in 1948 – were announced by then-Prime Minister Theresa May in 2019.

May announced the monument in the wake of the Windrush scandal in 2018, when an investigation found that dozens of Caribbean people who had come to the UK after the Second World War had

been deported or denied vital medical treatment and legal rights by the British government in recent years.

A 2020 review found that the Home Office had displayed “thoughtlessness and ignorance” in its treatment of these people.

Many of those affected by the scandal have still not got the compensation they were told they were eligible for.

Some campaigners think the Windrush Monument is inappropriate because of its location and an alleged lack of consultation with the UK’s Caribbean community.

The Windrush Foundation, an organisation set up in 1997 to celebrate the contribution of Caribbean immigrants to the UK, said the monument should be

The statue pays tribute to the thousands of people who came to the UK from the Caribbean after the Second World War and up to the early 1970s.

The government paid £1 million to fund the statue, which was made by Jamaican sculptor Basil Watson, who was chosen through a competition. The statue shows a man, woman and child with suitcases at Waterloo Station.

Mr Watson said: “They arrived with the idea of laying a foundation for their families and their future, and a hope of contributing to a society that they expected would welcome them in return.

From this seemingly auspicious beginning despite many challenges, they spread their culture across Britain influencing many aspects of the society.”

He added: “My parents, along with a great many others, took the long arduous voyage from the Caribbean

attack. You feel like you’ve been playing by the rules and you’ve been contributing to society in different ways and then to be treated like that…”

Hazel passed away in the summer of 2020, aged 86, after a battle with cancer.

At her funeral, John read a eulogy written by her cousin, Patrick Allen, governor-general of Jamaica. “Everyone looked up to her”, said John.

Reflecting on the legacy of Windrush, John said: “I think we need to be a bit careful celebrating Windrush when there are still so many issues. Members of the Windrush generation are still being deported and that wasn’t an accident but a deliberate policy.

“They’ve announced the compensation scheme but some people are waiting quite a long time to receive the actual money - some people are dying before they receive the money. The reason people are scared is the Nationality and Borders Bill which impacts the original Windrush generation and non-white British people.”

Asked about his own identity, as a man born in the UK with Jamaican heritage, John said: “I see myself as British but whenever I go back it feels like you’re going back to your roots. It’s such a big part of who I am.”

By Alex Smith sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY HEAD coach Gareth Batty said “two defeats isn’t the end of the world” after Essex Eagles’ Michael Pepper continued his Vitality Blast love affair with the Cloud County Ground before Aaron Beard returned career-best figures last weekend.

Surrey’s Dan Moriarty Sams and Harmer to his earlier Rossington dismissal to end up with four for 35.

Beard made an electrifying start as he picked up both a yorked Roy and Will Jacks – the ball after selecting a new bat – brilliantly caught at short fine leg by Tom Westley.

Smith and Rory Burns put on 57 with a low-risk approach, while still keeping up with the rate before Lawrence stuck one through Smith. Burns followed by screwing Beard to mid-on and Narine fired back at Harmer as Surrey lost their way.

Laurie Evans continued the slump when sub fielder Ben Allison produced a spectacular solo relay catch at wide longon – Harmer grabbing two wickets in

the over to return two for 20. Beard had debutant Tom Lawes skying on mid-on for his fourth.

Sams pilfered Chris Jordan and Sam Cook had Conor McKerr as Surrey could only reach 155 for nine.

Surrey head coach Gareth Batty said: “T20 cricket isn’t an exact science. A few of the players have gone off to England duty and we haven’t quite got it right when it comes to our game plan but we’re still very confident about our skills and two defeats isn’t the end of the world.

“It is really good for Reece to take four wickets against his old county and he’s showing some form which is great for what is coming up from an England and Surrey point of view.

“Tom Lawes is going to be a wonderful

young cricketer. He went relatively well tonight and numbers can tell lies.

What we saw from a young fella getting amongst it in the game really impressed us.

“I think seven or eight overs we were right where we wanted to be and then we lost a couple of wickets within 10 balls and that is where the game changed. When you are chasing 200 you probably need somebody to get 70 plus or everybody to chip in with quick 30s.

We just missed a beat and we move on.

“You are only ever a game away from having momentum in T20 cricket. You need to keep believing and have faith in the way you play. We didn’t get it right tonight and Essex were good. We take it on the chin and move forward.”

Chris Harwood thus joined his brother Simon with 4.4 overs remaining, and together they launched an onslaught which saw 61 runs come off the next 26 balls until Simon fell off the penultimate ball of the innings, having struck 42 off 31 balls. Alex Gledhill hit the last ball for 2 to close the innings at 263-9 off the permitted 66 overs, leaving Chris Harwood undefeated with 21 off just nine balls.

Beddington had got through their overs quickly, and thus left themselves with 58 overs to get the runs. They got off to a rapid start as openers Tor Burrowes and Jack Ballard raced to 50 off the first eight overs, bowled by Simon Harwood and Lodwick. The opening bowlers gave

way to Brown and Chris Harwood, and it was Brown who made the breakthrough, having Ballard caught behind by Harms for 33, off just 26 balls. The Harwood brothers shared the next two wickets, and Beddington went into tea at 96-3 after 18 overs.

After the interval Brown and Khan settled into a long spell in tandem that saw Burrowes and Karl Moolman take just 45 runs off the next 15.3 overs before Khan took the vital wicket of Burrowes for 71 off 109 balls. Chris Harwood returned to take the fifth wicket with the score on 166, but Moolman and Jack Green advanced to 203 in the 51st over when the latter fell to Crowley for 14.

For only the second time in their history, four batsmen made centuries in the same Championship innings as Surrey piled up 673 for seven with Will Jacks making an undefeated 103 to add to the first-day hundreds

Surrey’s total was a new record against Kent and only two runs more than they made at Beckenham in May when seven of their batters scored fifties – but no one made a hundred.

Curran then picked up Ben Compton in the fourth over of Kent’s reply and they also lost Joe Denly before Daniel BellDrummond and skipper Jack Leaning fought back either side of a 90-minute rain delay which took 17 overs out of the day’s allocation.

Pepper took his Chelmsford tally to 304 in six innings – and 386 in total – with a tubthumping 48 as Paul Walter continued his fine form with a 49 as the Eagles soured to 198.

Before fast bowler Beard, on just his second appearance of the season, nipped openers Will Jacks and Jason Roy to eventually pick up four for 29 – as Surrey fell 43 runs short.

Essex boosted their hopes of securing a home quarter-final to move to seven wins out of 12, while Surrey remain top and will host a home knockout game but having been previously unbeaten in all competitions until Thursday night have lost momentum.

On a fixture celebrating Essex Pride, Surrey stuck the Eagles in to bat and had Adam Rossington caught behind in the second over, with the first two overs only going for six before Pepper went ballistic.

He struck 30 from the first nine balls he faced, with just a dot and a single punctuating his boundary blitz. The South African-born batter began by scooping a six, something he replicated in the following over between a bullet cut shot and followed by four consecutive boundaries off Dan Moriarty.

His hitting paused after a strike to the box, which he never really recovered from as he limped to five more runs before he reversed straight to third – the second wicket in three balls for Sunil Narine.

Essex’s rebuild and second 10 overs were a textbook display of accumulation – with only seven dot balls, along with four wickets coming in the second half of the innings for 110 runs.

By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAD the better of their AJ Fordham Surrey Championship Division 1 match against Beddington, but were unable to force a victory and had to settle for a winning draw last weekend.

Dulwich chose to bat, and got off to a good start as Ollie Steele and James Schofield put on 46 in 13.4 overs for the first wicket. Schofield’s dismissal for 25, off 38 balls, was quickly followed by

Dulwich therefore had 4.5 overs to get the last three wickets. Brown bowled two of those overs and took a wicket in each of them, both leg before, but Dulwich were unable to separate the last wicket pair and the innings closed on 222-9. Brown bowled 18 overs to finish with 3-35, while Chris Harwood had 3-31 off nine.

Dulwich therefore secured the winning draw with the maximum possible bonus points, giving them fourteen points from the match. This lifts them into ninth place, just seven points behind Beddington.

This weekend, Dulwich have a difficult match when they make the long journey to face leaders Cranleigh.

Fisher boss makes promise Excitement building as St Paul’s side set to unveil new signings

The Fish, who will again be competing in the SCEFL Premier Division this season, are set to unveil some new signings this weekend.

With the campaign due to start on July 30, it gives Ashanike just under a month to assess and prepare his squad after a busy off-season.

Ashanike said this pre-season had been “totally different to what we’d normally have, only a few players have moved on so for us it’s all about carrying on that momentum from the end of the last campaign and getting the boys up to speed fitness-wise.

“It’ll be nice to have to only assess a few players rather than six or seven new potential starters.”

Ashanike was in a buoyant mood when discussing the closed season, chuckling as he said: “I’ve gone quiet on Twitter where I’d usually be announcing players joining and re-signing and I think some fans are worried about whether or not we have any players. Ashanike explained the lack of updates on social media, with some Fisher supporters perhaps wondering about the strength of the squad heading into 2022-23.

“The more noise you make the more attention you bring,” Ashanike said.

“We’ve done well to keep the players we have, and I didn’t want to reveal too much and allow clubs to start throwing money at some of our players.”

Last season’s top two, Chatham Town and Sheppey United, were well known to have strong budgets. Ashanike doesn’t have a playing budget but is happy

with that situation. Recently relegated Whitstable are another side likely to offer players money to play, along with Phoenix Sports who Ashanike expects to be in the mix for promotion.

But Ashanike believes the league is “wide open”. Last season, Fisher targeted a top-ten finish but missed out by just a couple of points, ending up in thirteenth.

They had a superb final month, winning four and drawing two of their last six games. Ashanike isn’t looking too far ahead, emphasising the focus is to be “as competitive as we can every week”.

With this game-by-game attitude in mind, Ashanike and his squad haven’t set goals for the season. Instead, Ashanike says: “We’ve sat as a team and looked at the end of last season and realised we operate best when we go game by game with less pressure, so we’ll be looking to do that and be competitive in every game.”

Fisher fans can get a first glimpse of their new-look side this Saturday. Kickoff at St Paul’s in Rotherhithe is 3pm with gates opening at 1.30pm.

Hamlet sign duo as experienced trio retained

Striker Mills, defender Taylor and goalkeeper Grainger have committed to Gavin Rose’s squad for at least one more season.

The Hamlet have also signed two midfielders, Sam Deadfield from Hampton & Richmond Borough and Kreshnic Krasniqi from Ebbsfleet United.

The club are also expected to confirm that Rose has signed a new deal. He was out of contract this summer but told the News after the end of last season he was looking forward to leading the club as they aim to secure new training facilities and again try to challenge for promotion from National League South.

FISHER GET their pre-season under way this Saturday against Basildon United – with boss Ajay Ashanike promising: “I guarantee we look stronger this year”.

Fisher have lost some fan favourites this summer. England six-a-side goalkeeper Tommy Taylor departed along with last season’s top-scorer Isaac Thompson. Both players will be moving to higher divisions but rather than feel disappointed at losing two key players, Ashanike is proud of them. He said: “They’re a credit to themselves and a credit to my coaching team. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.”

Ashanike has wasted no time in strengthening the goalkeeping department with the signing of former Leyton Orient stopper Sam Amedu, whom he managed at Tower Hamlets.

Fisher have also brought in Lee McKnight, who comes with great pedigree having been at Colchester United five years ago.

Ashanike also wants to add a left-back to the squad.

Bryan, 34, said she had come “full circle” after she started her career with the Lionesses as a seventeen-

year-old.

Bryan last played for Crystal Palace in the Championship before she suffered a cruciate ligament injury in 2019.

She scored 104 goals in 71 appearances in all competitions during her first spell with Palace.

with south London clubs,” Bryan said. “Being from south London it’s always special to represent your local football team. Also the players and coaches here are a very open and welcoming.

“It feels great to be back training after such a long time out, I’ve just completed my first session back [Monday]. I wanted to be able to determine when I decide to stop playing rather than it be injuries that

decide it.”

Lionesses manager Jack Wheeler said: “She adds that knowledge and experience to a very good squad.

We are looking forward to getting her back enjoying her football and see her have a successful season at Millwall LFC.” Meanwhile, captain Libby Stubbs has confirmed she is departing the club.

Stubbs said: “The past three years

have been an absolute blast. I have made memories and friendships for life but now it’s time to move on. Thank you to all the fans for the support and all the coaching staff I’ve had throughout my time there. I will miss you all.”

Millwall Lionesses are in the L&SERWFL Premier Division in the 2022-23 campaign and their home games will be played at St Paul’s in Rotherhithe.

Zian Flemming has all the attributes to make an impact in one of the toughest leagues in Europe

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett believes new record buy Zian Flemming has all the attributes to be a success in the Championship and give the Lions “something different”.

Millwall officially confirmed Flemming, 23, as their first signing of the summer last weekend after paying Dutch top-flight side Fortuna Sittard £1.7million for his services.

Flemming, who is 6ft, is an allaction attacking midfielder who Rowett says can play off the front, up front or out wide.

Video clips show a player with

excellent technique but also the physicality and speed to thrive in one of the most demanding leagues in Europe.

Flemming started his career with Jong Ajax – the reserve team of the Dutch giants – before moving to PEC Zwolle and then on loan to NEC Nijmegen for the 2019-20 season. He signed for Fortuna that summer.

Flemming has an impressive record of 52 goals in 145 senior games, the majority of them in the Eredivisie. He has been in double-figures for goals in each of the last three seasons.

With Jed Wallace having departed, Flemming, though not a direct replacement, will be expected to provide goals from midfield.

Flemming flew to Ireland at the weekend to join his new team-mates at their week-long training camp in Cork. He had his first training session on Monday.

“I’m really pleased,” Rowett said.

“Zian is a player who I’ve been tracking for a couple of years and I wanted to sign him in the last window.

“He’s got so much quality. I’m really excited about this signing. He’s young, hungry and has scored goals over in Holland. All types of goals as well. I think that’s the exciting bit for me.

“He’s something a bit different for us, so we’re looking forward to him coming to Millwall and seeing if he

can help us towards the next level.

Millwall also announced the signings of Benik Afobe and George Honeyman earlier this week. They scored thirteen goals and four goals in all competitions last season, respectively.

The Lions are addressing an area that has been one of the main reasons they have fallen just short of the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.

“We’ve tried to increase our goal tally as we’ve lost some players who added to it last season,” Rowett said.

“Zian can play as a 10, he can play in the front two positions, slightly wider or narrower.

“He’s a bit of a runner as well, so whilst he’s got technical qualities,

he will also fit into the speed and physicality of The Championship, which is what you need when bringing in a player from a different country.

“He’s coming into a new environment and a new league, so we will need to give him some time to bed in. We’ll give him the best possible chance to do that, but getting him in this early in pre-season is crucial.

“I think it’s a really exciting signing for us. We beat off competition from quite a few clubs to sign him, in the Championship also, so he’s had some interest.

“I’m excited to see him play and make a good start to his Millwall career.”

Wallace, 28, left Millwall on a free transfer and signed a four-year deal with Steve Bruce’s Baggies.

West Brom have shown their intent this summer by

signing two of the division’s best attacking midfielders in Wallace and John Swift, another freetransfer signing, from Reading. The Hawthorns side also signed former Millwall loan midfielder Jayson Molumby on a permanent deal from Brighton.

West Brom are third favourites at 9/1 to win the Championship title.

Millwall are 30/1.

The Lions had offered a contract to Wallace that would have made him the club’s highest-paid player, but he turned it down.

“When you look at this club over the last fifteen years, certainly in my life time, they’ve always been

at the top of this league, if not the league above,” Wallace said.

“That aligns with where I want to be playing my football.

“I think it’s a huge show of intent to bring Swifty in, who I know.

“That’s a very impressive signing.

He’s a top quality player at this level, along with the rest of a very talented squad.

“I want to get promoted. I’ve been trying to do that for the last three or four seasons. I feel like I can find that ambition here.

“Hopefully we can reach our goal, which is to have a few bottles of champagne, a little party and promotion at the end of the season.”

Wallace added: “When I spoke to [Bruce], I felt like I’d play my best football under someone like him.

“You’re going to get interest. I spoke to a few clubs.

“I just felt it was the right time, at my age, to be really ambitious and to take the next step in my career.

“This club wants to be in the Premier League. The manager has had huge success at this level before.

“Goals and assists are one thing, but I want to finish as high up the table as we can.

“I don’t care, to be honest, about personal numbers – I just want to play in the Premier League.”

Beeline for Bermondsey Afobe and Honeyman only had eyes for Lions

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BENIK AFOBE made a beeline for Bermondsey when his Belgian adventure ended before it had even started.

Afobe, 29, was set to sign for Club Brugge but the move to the 2022-23 Champions League participants broke down at the last moment.

They say you should never close a door on anything, and Millwall were waiting with open arms to welcome back their top-scorer last season.

Afobe signed a one-year deal for an undisclosed fee as he moved permanently from Stoke City after his successful loan spell in 2021-22.

The Lions announced the signings of Afobe and George Honeyman, from Hull City, within minutes of each other on Tuesday afternoon.

Afobe had agreed a two-year deal in Belgium and passed his medical, before the move dramatically collapsed last Friday.

Lions boss Gary Rowett explained what happened next as Millwall moved for the forward.

“I spoke to Benik all the way through,”

Rowett told the News. “It’s such a difficult one because when you bring someone in on loan and you say we can give you that support and confidence and game-time to go and show what you’re all about – because before that obviously Benik had a tough few years – and when he goes and does it and does really well, you’ve got to accept that he’s done the job and is going to have options.

“I spoke to Benik all the way through, there were some options that came in quite quickly and quite strongly towards the end when we thought that we may have a chance of signing him.

“And then of course fortunately for us it didn’t work out that way [the move to Bruges] and we were in contact and ready to go.

“I have to say, as soon as that move fell through Benik was straight on and he didn’t want to go anywhere else other than us. And he had other options, he had other good options in the Championship.

“That’s testament to how much he enjoyed last year and also how much he wants to kick on this year and be successful with us. That was great.”

Afobe scored thirteen goals last season, nine of them after the turn of the year.

Appeal after former Millwall manager is mugged in Ibiza

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THE FAMILY of Willie Donachie have appealed for information after the former Millwall manager was mugged and had his Rolex watch stolen in Ibiza last weekend.

Rowett added: “The second half of last season he showed that little bit more confidence. Maybe it took him that first half of the season to just get that confidence back. Players have runs and just need to find that in different ways.

“But I’ve always believed that Benik is a 20-goal-a-season striker. He’s capable of that and what we’ve got to do is give him the service, we’ve got to give him the chances along with the other strikers. Then he’s got to finish them off. We saw last season he’s got Premier League ability to go and do that.

“I’m excited about what he can do this season along with others.”

Afobe and Honeyman flew out to Millwall’s training camp at Fota Island, Cork, after passing their medicals on Monday.

Honeyman wore the no.10 shirt for Hull last season and scored in their 2-1 win over Millwall, one of four goals in 2021-22.

Honeyman said in his first club interview that he joined Millwall to try to get to the Premier League.

Rowett described how he sees Honeyman contributing to the side.

“I think he’s a little bit of everything,” Rowett said. “He’s played in a midfield two, he’s played as a 10, he’s played in

a front three.

“There are lots of different options, we’ve got a little bit of flexibility in there. Zian [Flemming] can play as a 10 and can also play in a front two.

“We need to have the ability in games to change things, we need to have the ability in different types of games against different types of opponents to play different ways. We also need to have fierce competition within the group to push us on.

“George knows the Championship.

He’s a great character, everyone you speak to says what a top guy he is. He’s got great energy on the pitch and you saw last season he can pop up with goals and set goals up.

“At 27, I think he’s in the prime of his football career and a fabulous signing for us.”

Millwall are far from finished in the transfer window this summer as they aim for, ideally, another centre-back, wing-backs and another attacker.

Rowett added: “We want players that are hungry and are coming in to kick on at different stages of their careers.

“For us at the moment, to get options like that into the building, I’ve been really pleased with our window so far.

“But we’ve got more work to do, of course.”

Donachie, 70, was on holiday in San Antonio on the Spanish island when he was reportedly knocked to the ground by two men who then made off with the watch, which was a gift from another of his former clubs, Oldham.

Former Scotland international Donachie gave chase and caught one of the men, but couldn’t recover his watch, which was presented to him more than 30 years ago.

Donachie’s son, Dan, went on Twitter on Sunday to make the appeal.

He wrote: “Please help Twitter!

My 70 year old Dad mugged in Ibiza for his watch. Gifted by the [the Oldham Athletic] board when promoted [to Division One] in 1991.

“This was his last remaining sentimental item. It’s a Rolex inscribed with: ‘Thanks Willie for a memorable season.’

“Help if you can.”

Dan told the Manchester Evening News: “He’s okay. It was obviously a bit of a shock. He’s 70 so to have two blokes wrestle you to the ground in the street has to be scary. It certainly upset me when I found out.

“He’s very philosophical and accepting of things and he’s not making a fuss. In fact, if I hadn’t put out this appeal he probably wouldn’t have told anyone about it. But I know he’s gutted about the watch.

“He’s not bothered about material things at all, but that watch means a lot to him. It was his last remaining sentimental item. They worked really hard to get them promoted and it was a lovely surprise when they gave it to him. He’s worn it every day since.

“I know it’s a long shot but if we can get it back I know it would mean the world to him. Whatever it is worth to these people it is not worth what it means to him. It’s priceless to him.”

Donachie was wished well on social media as people expressed their support for him and hope that he wasn’t hurt. And former players such as ex-Manchester City duo Trevor Sinclair and Rodney March also shared the appeal.

Donachie was appointed Lions manager in November 2006 and led them from the relegation zone to safety in League One that season.

He was sacked in October 2007 after a poor start to the season left Millwall bottom of the table.

A number of Championship clubs had made moves in the transfer market – Cardiff, for example, had signed seven players – and the Lions had lost their best player, Jed Wallace, before they had brought anyone in.

But Millwall started their summer

activity with a bang when they broke their transfer record for just the third time in over 30 years with the £1.7million acquisition of Dutch attacking midfielder Zian Flemming last weekend.

The Lions then followed that up with the double-signing of striker Benik Afobe and midfielder George Honeyman earlier this week.

Such is the nature and extremes of emotion connected with supporting your club, it has swung Lions fans from thinking a relegation battle was in the offing to dreaming about a Premier League challenge.

Rowett isn’t on social media but he understands there is that emotion, and he was confident that deals would start falling into place.

“It’s hard as a manager because people tell you and you can sense people getting a little bit frustrated,” Rowett said.

“When you’re in it and you know what’s happening you’ve got to hold your nerve. You’ve got to almost let that outside noise go on knowing that the fans will be happy when we start making signings.

“I’m pleased it’s starting to move forward, I’m pleased it’s given them something to be excited about.

Hopefully they can also see what good signings we’re making.

“Breaking the club record in Zian Flemming and showing the ambition that we’ve showed in the other signings also, it’s an exciting time.”

to finalising a move for Leeds United’s England under-21 international Charlie Cresswell this week.

The Lions want a centre-back this summer and have been interested in Daniel Ballard, who spent 2021-22 on loan at The Den from Arsenal.

Millwall were hopeful of concluding a season-long loan deal for Cresswell, 19, as the News was going to press.

Cresswell, who has six England under-21 caps, made six senior appearances for the Whites last season, starting one Premier League game, a 2-1 defeat at home to West Ham. Cresswell can play on the right side of a back three, where Ballard, 22, nailed down his spot last season.

Sunderland are the current favourites to sign Ballard this summer.

Millwall linked with move for January target

Senegalese forward Gueye, 22, was on the Lions’ list of transfer targets in January.

Gueye plays for Belgian top-flight side K.V. Kortrijk and scored five times in sixteen games before injury ended his season in December.

Millwall and Watford are reportedly monitoring the striker, who returned from his lay-off with two goals in a recent friendly.

Gueye was rated at around £1.5million in January and still has two years left to run on his current contract. He has scored eleven goals in 33 league starts for Kortrijk since joining from Norwegian side Aalesunds FK in 2020.

Millwall have been busy bolstering their attacking ranks in the last week. Zian Flemming arrived for a club-record fee from Dutch club Fortuna Sittard, where he was in double-figures for goals in consecutive seasons.

That was followed by the double announcement of George Honeyman from Hull City and Benik Afobe’s return from Stoke City.

Afobe was Millwall’s top-scorer last season with thirteen goals, while Honeyman hit the back of the net five times in 2021-22.

The Lions need to replace the goals and goal involvements of Jed Wallace, who left this summer to join West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer.

Wallace, 28, scored 39 times in five seasons and was also the Lions’ main provider of goals.

Millwall have plenty of options in their attack, with Tom Bradshaw, Mason Bennett and Tyler Burey all vying to be in Gary Rowett’s starting line-up against Stoke City on the opening Championship weekend at the end of July.

Isaac Olaofe is also in Ireland with the rest of the squad but could leave for another loan move this season.
