Councils could face unlimited fines for not carrying out housing repairs properly

The council spent roughly £30 million per year on repairs over the period from 20102021, and has committed another £400 million over the next four years. Council leader Kieron Williams said that eighteen per cent of Southwark’s housing stock was in a state of disrepair when Labour came to power in 2010, but that 98 per cent of the homes the council owns now meet the government’s ‘decent homes standard’.

Despite these headline figures, the News often reports on the problems facing Southwark Council tenants, and tenants of various housing associations, with frequent instances of damp, mould, leaks from above, and even rats and other vermin not dealt with for weeks and months.

Southwark Council did not respond to a request for comment regarding the new social housing regulation bill.

London Councils, which represents all local authorities in the capital, welcomed the bill but said that councils needed more money from central government to keep up their

The social housing regulation bill will also slash the length of time councils are given before an inspection, from 28 days to just 48 hours - and to make emergency repairs, with the councils footing the bill.

The new rules, which still have to be voted through Parliament, will also apply to housing associations.

Southwark Council is the biggest social landlord in London and one of the biggest in the UK, with some 55,000 homes.

Southwark tenants reported the need for repairs in their home more than 150,000 times in the past year - the equivalent of nearly three per household - but this was down from about 219,000 in the 2010/2011 financial year.

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A man arrested by Immigration Enforcement Officers on suspected immigration offences has been released on bail after protestors stopped an immigration van for several hours.

Police were called to Evan Cook Close, Queen’s Road, Peckham, shortly after 1.30pm on Saturday, June 11 to a report of protesters obstructing immigration officers.

Immigration Enforcement had attended an address to arrest a Nigerian man who was suspected of overstaying in the country.

The blockade, conducted by approximately 200 people, and lasting for hours, involved people encircling the vehicle and sitting in front of it to stop it moving.

A video on Twitter showed clashes with police and people chanting “the people united will never be defeated”. The Met Police are yet to comment on accusations that they were heavy-handed with protestors.

After several hours, police told protestors that “the gentleman has returned to his address” which was met with cheers.

The people of Peckham and Southwark care for our neighbours, wherever they were born. If the government wants to do something useful they should take on the cost of living crisis, instead of stirring up racism.”

A Home Office spokesperson said: “Preventing immigration enforcement teams from doing their job is unacceptable. Blocking or obstructing them will not deter them from undertaking the duties that the public rightly expect them to carry out.”

Fleeing Ukrainian grandma says Southwark is like ‘PARADISE’ Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Nadiia Sulym, 86, came from Kyiv to London in March to escape Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and lives with her granddaughter, photographer Maryna, who moved over several years ago.

Accompanied by her granddaughter and speaking in Russian on a sunny afternoon at the park, Nadiia said: “Here there’s lots of good people. It’s some kind of paradise. Maybe [living in London] is temporary of course, but while it lasts I really like it.

“How great the park is. In Kyiv there aren’t parks like this with this level of cleanness and neatness. Maybe things were going that way before the war, but we won’t know now.”

Asked what she liked about the park, Nadiia said: “There’s so many flowers, there’s so much green. And the people here... you don’t get these alcoholics!...

“It is incomprehensible how welcomed I feel here, I would never think that I would be so welcomed here.”

She added how grateful she was for her family. “I am so glad that God sent

such a wonderful granddaughter...

We came here and Marynka has given us everything. She’s looked after us so well and taken everything on her own shoulders.”

Nadiia and her daughter came to London from Kyiv on a bus via Greece while her UK visa was being processed. She was in Kyiv for about ten years before that, having moved there from Donetsk with her daughter to be with Maryna. She grew up in a village now in western Russia.

Maryna told the News that she takes her grandmother, who uses a wheelchair, for a walk around Southwark Park a few times a week.

“We look at birds, then my grandma starts to remember what sort of birds they had in their village, and she remembers stories about her childhood. We never share our personal stories in our family, and this is the first time I have heard many of them. It’s like a family history walk.”

Smiling, Nadiia reminisced about her grandfathers, who came to the Kursk region, an area then in Ukraine but now in western Russia, from the Dnipropetrovsk region in Ukraine.

They built their village, called Pospeshenka - which would translate as ‘haste’. Later, the region was made

part of Russia, and the village was renamed Uspeshnaya - meaning ‘successful’.

Nadiia’s father - “a clever man” died at the front in the Second World War. “I grew up as an orphan, you could say. It’s difficult to talk about.”

The people of former Soviet countries are very proud of their families’ roles at the forefront of the fight against Nazi Germany. But Nadiia contrasted this with the war currently destroying the lives of millions of Ukrainians. “This war, I don’t even know what kind of war this is. Shooting, bombs - what for?”

Although London is a far cry from the war in Ukraine, this is not the first time Nadiia has lived abroad. After the war, she moved with her husband to Algeria, where he worked in a factory, and she worked in a canteen for state security officers.

Asked if she missed anything, Nadiia at first talked around the question. Maryna explained that her grandmother found it difficult to admit anything was wrong when she was being looked after by her family.

When her granddaughter prompted her, Nadiia eventually said that she missed her husband’s grave in Ukraine. “My husband was a very good man, my father was a good man.

But it’s worked out this way.”

Southwark’s faith and belief awards, run by the council and two local interfaith organisations, are open for nominations until Monday, June 27.

The awards are in the following six categories: · Action against climate change · Community resourcefulness in response to Covid-19 · Health & wellbeing · Inspiring youth · Interfaith relations · Promoting inclusion The winners will be announced on July 19 at a ceremony at Southwark Cathedral.

One such person who helped others during the Covid-19 lockdowns was Hajia Saidat Oketunde, Astley Estate resident and founder of Faith Women’s Community UK. “At 6am every Thursday morning during lockdown I can be found in Tesco on the Old Kent Road, getting essentials into bags to be handed out to households who are elderly or vulnerable,” she told the News in 2021. One of those she was regularly supporting was an elderly woman, over 80, who needed help with shopping, collecting medication and paying her bills.

She has also helped struggling families throughout the holidays, whether through summer programmes for kids or by delivering 70 Christmas hampers to primary and secondary age children. She estimated she has delivered hundreds, if not thousands, of parcels over the course of the lockdowns.

“One thing I will not stop is giving smiles to the face of the people through doing my friendly regular phone calls to those who are housebound and have now got used to hearing my voice once or twice a week,” she said.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A man who was killed while defending others in the London Bridge terror attack has been put forward for a sainthood, according to reports.

Spanish man Ignacio Echeverría, 39, beat off the terrorists with a skateboard until he was stabbed to death in the attack on June 3, 2017.

Now Mr Echeverría’s family in Madrid have been given the backing of the Catholic Church to make him a saint, according to reports in Spanish media. The canonisation process can only begin five years after a person’s death.

Mr Echeverría’s mother and father are working with local church authorities in Madrid to prepare an application, the El Mundo newspaper reported. “Ignacio risked and gave his life to save other

people. He had a devoted life,” his father said.

Pope Francis wrote after the attack: “The heroic offering of life, suggested and sustained by charity, expresses a true, complete and exemplary imitation of Christ and, therefore, deserves the admiration that the community of the faithful usually reserves for those who have voluntarily accepted martyrdom of blood or have heroically exercised Christian virtues.”

Mr Echeverría, a devout Catholic, moved to London in 2016 to work for HSBC. He was skateboarding with friends on the evening of the attack. When he saw the horror unfolding, he intervened, probably saving the lives of several people. He was stabbed to death by two terrorists, which killed him.

Mr Echeverría was given a posthumous George medal in 2018 for his bravery during the attack, in which eight people died and 48 were seriously injured.

London’s most cherished cabbie hailed hero with fitting funeral procession

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Friends, family and colleagues of the late great taxi driver George “Gorgeous George” Vyse gathered for his funeral on Monday, June 13, at St George’s Cathedral.

Known as “Gorgeous George” for his impeccable style and beautiful cabs, he was a taxi driver for over forty years.

George is known for revolutionising the taxi industry. In 1984, he successfully fought for taxi drivers’ rights to have radios in their taxis. The Public Carriage Office (PCO), then regulating the taxi trade, had previously banned them.

Prior to his death, George had wanted to roll out more electric charge points across the capital, for cabbies making the switch to electric cars.

Members of the taxi trade came from all across London, and even the Midlands, to pay their respects to George.

Many of them were regular visitors to his Southwark Street office, where he would advise hundreds of taxi drivers on

everything and anything, usually over a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Described by those who knew him best as “a great talker”, “sage-like” and “the master of finding five minutes for everyone”, he will be sorely missed.

The service, conducted by Father Dermott O’Gorman, saw mourners sing ‘Jerusalem’ for the entrance hymn and depart after ‘Abide with Me’.

Highly adept at navigating the Thames’ notoriously strong currents, these watery ‘wherrymen’, as they were also known, would stand along the Thames banks crying ‘oars, oars, oars’ to attract customers.

‘The Ferryman’s Seat’ shows how tough these men’s lives must have been.

As a tiny alcove, barely protruding from the wall, it would have offered minimal protection from the wind and rain that raged over the boggy Thames banks.

Ferrymen also suffered from insecure employment. Just as Uber drivers have pushed many cabbies out of work, returning navy soldiers would often try and take up work on the Thames, frequently leading to violent altercations between regular and newcomer.

In times of war, ferrymen were often the first to be pressed to crew on royal navy or merchant marine vessels. And in winter, Londoners could sometimes

simply walk over the frozen river to the other side, bringing the ferrymen’s trade to a standstill.

Given these harsh conditions, perhaps the 2,000 plus ferrymen who worked the Thames in Medieval London should

be forgiven for their menacing ways.

They gained a reputation for being a “rough, saucy, and independent lot” and even had their own mysterious ‘water dialect’.

The advent of huge steamboats

signalled the beginning of the end for the wherryman, who struggled to compete with hulking boats capable of carrying tonnes of cargo. But the ‘Ferryman’s Seat’ remains an ancient reminder of the modern cab-driver’s watery forefathers.

They were told that declining birth rates, and people moving out of London after Covid-19 and Brexit, were to blame for plummeting roll numbers.

Despite the News asking for comment, and an interview with Cllr Jasmine Ali, the cabinet member responsible for schools, both requests have been repeatedly snubbed.

The council has said it will provide this newspaper with a ‘briefing paper’ on the issue, which should be available next week. For now, parents

are in the dark.

The News spoke to Paul Whiteman, general secretary of the school leaders’ union NAHT to get his insight on the situation.

Though he couldn’t speak about Southwark specifically, he said: “We know that the population of primary aged pupils is currently in decline.

There appear to be a number of factors driving this, including lower birth rates, but also some evidence of families moving out of London following the pandemic.

“This will inevitably have an impact on funding for some schools as the money they receive is tied to the number of pupils attending. However, it would be a huge mistake to allow schools to close, only for there to be a renewed places crisis further down the line.

“Local councils and central government need to keep an eye on the long term here and ensure schools are supported where there are short-term reductions in pupil numbers.

“A truly ambitious government would seize this opportunity to reduce class sizes so that pupils can get the best possible support as we come out of the pandemic.”

School closures have been a looming worry in Southwark ever since the pandemic.

Last year, St John’s Walworth Church of England Primary School closed for good. There were also worries that English Martyrs Roman Catholic Primary School could shut although those plans were later scrapped.

After the morning service, a long procession of taxis followed the hearse to Honor Oak Crematorium, where mourners said goodbye for the final time.

George died on Sunday, May 15, aged 82 after a collision with a moped on Kennington Lane the preceding Thursday.

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Whereas today’s black cab drivers can cosy up in green shelters dotted around the capital, London’s Medieval taxi drivers had less salubrious pitstops, the oldest of which is right here in Southwark.

‘The Ferryman’s Seat’ on Bear Gardens is an unassuming flint slab next to Pizza Express on Bankside, near Shakespeare’s Globe. It’s a fascinating historical insight into an era when getting a taxi often meant a rickety boat ride across the Thames.

Ferryman are thought to have worked the Thames since the Roman era but by 1555, it had become a formalised trade.

Just as taxi drivers must learn ‘The Knowledge’, seven year apprenticeships saw trainees gain an encyclopaedic understanding of the Thames’ complex water currents and tides.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Two men from Camberwell and a third from Kennington have been jailed after an incident in which a gun was waved in a police officer’s face

Joshua Fasoro, 21, and Myiles Brown, 22, both from Camberwell, were sent to prison for seven years and six months, and eight years respectively for having guns.

Mukhtar Khan, 23, from Kennington, was locked up for nine years for possession of a prohibited firearm and additionally convicted of possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.

A fourth man, 23-year-old Don-Juan Newman, from Stockwell, was also sent away for seven years and six months for gun possession.

The four men were convicted for an incident that took place after police were called to reports of a shooting in Woolwich in November 2020.

The court heard that in the early hours of November 3, 2020, the four men went to a recording studio on Woolwich Church Street, SE18 and police say three shots were fired at a group, injuring a woman and a man. Police were immediately called and began looking for the suspects.

Using police dogs, officers found their vehicle, which failed to stop and crashed into a parked car shortly after. Five men ran off, leaving behind two magazines containing live ammunition, three large Rambo knives and a machete.

Shocking body-worn footage, which was shown to the jury at Croydon Crown Court captured officer PC Elwood chasing Kennington resident Khan, who turned and pointed a semi-automatic handgun at him and his police dog, PD Cruz.

The officer later said he was scared but carried on running after Khan, who was arrested shortly after by firearms officers in a nearby estate. Brown, Fasoro and Newman were arrested by armed officers hiding nearby. The fifth man has still not been found and police say they

are continuing to look for him.

PC Elwood said: “When the gun was pointed directly at my face my instant reaction was to turn away in fear, I thought I was about to be killed. However I continued to chase after them as they are dangerous individuals who needed removing from the streets. Had I not have continued to chase after them then they would have got away and still had access to a deadly firearm.

He praised the two police dogs who took part in the operation, calling them “instrumental”.

PC Elwood added: “One of the dogs found a discarded firearm and another played a significant role in capturing one of the suspects.

“I joined the police so I could stop violent and dangerous criminals who pose a risk to society from causing harm to communities and this case is a classic example of that.”

Khan, Brown, Fasoro and Newman were convicted of the gun crimes after a five week trial, but acquitted of attempted murder.

Plans to turn Grade II-listed Manor of Walworth pub into a karaoke bar

Mercato Metropolitano could go to make way for 46-storey tower

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Elephant and Castle’s Mercato Metropolitano, a collection of bars and restaurants, faces an uncertain future because tower blocks of up to 46 storeys could be built on the site.

Developers Berkeley bought the ‘Borough Triangle’, a stretch of land encompassed by Newington Causeway, Borough Road and Newington Court, from Peabody in 2020.

They now want to build four blocks, of heights between ten and 46 storeys on the site, which aim to deliver 828 new homes as well as new workspaces, restaurants and shops.

The News asked what these plans meant for Mercato Metropolitano and a spokesperson for Berkeley said: “Berkeley is continuing to have constructive discussions with Mercato Metropolitano and all onsite businesses regarding their future.”

The futures of the Baptist Chapel, London School of Musical Theatre and the Car Point Vehicle Hire, all on-site, also hang in the balance.

Berkeley added that their proposals would increase the “employment area” and new workspaces would support job creation and local investment.

The proposals are currently in the consultation stage, with the most recent consultation event held at Mercato Metropolitanon on May 27 with neighbours, councillors and community groups.

Some residents at nearby 251 Southwark Bridge Road, itself a 41-storey building, have expressed concerns.

Caroline Rennstam wrote on a local residents’ Facebook group: “We feel very strongly that we have been very poorly informed by the developers about the plans for the Borough Triangle site.”

She said the new buildings could block out light, but other commenters said it was hypocritical to oppose the development when already living in a high-rise building.

“You are living in a 42-storey tower (sic) and you are not blocking the light for the others? Ridiculous”, said one commenter.

Berkeley aims to submit a planning application to Southwark Council this summer.

Police make arrest after they say man is ‘deliberately struck’ by a car on the Old Kent Road

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Police have made an arrest after receiving reports that a man was “deliberately struck” by a car in Old Kent Road, SE1.

Police attended the scene of the collision, near the junction by Tesco, with the London Ambulance Service at 3.48pm on Friday, June 10.

The victim was rushed to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be

life-threatening.

The car involved in the collision left the scene but was later stopped in Vauxhall, and a man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

He remains in custody at a south London police station.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A Grade II listed pub on Walworth Road could be converted to accommodate fivebooth karaoke units in a project that would cost £2 million.

The proposed changes to the Georgian-era Manor of Walworth pub, 140 Walworth Road, were submitted to the council by property investment firm Tenergy Group last Tuesday.

As well as the installation of five karaoke booths, Tenergy Group want to build three hotel rooms, a rear terrace and make physical alterations to the building.

The building was formerly used by the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions a Victorian group of craft unions founded in 1890.

It is also beside the former Labour Party headquarters.

Historic England says Grade II buildings are “of special interest warranting every effort to preserve them”.

Limited, NTR Planning said: “The scheme seeks to secure the longterm viability and occupation of the listed building, providing a significant heritage benefit whilst also diversifying and enhancing the existing commercial and leisure offering.”

A noise report, carried out by Venta Acoustics, recommended numerous alterations to prevent noise disturbance to adjacent buildings.

This included the construction of a high performance independent twin frame partition to the external walls.

In December 2020, the pubs management company Antic Collective announced that their financial partners had forced them to terminate their management of the Manor of Walworth.

The pub has since been managed by Portobello Brewing, a west Londonbased brewery.

Fifteen-year-old boy stabbed in broad daylight on Walworth’s East Street - the second knife attack in just under two weeks

Police were called to East Street, shortly before 5.30pm to reports of a stabbing.

The wounded boy was treated at the scene and taken to hospital but his condition has been assessed as

non-life-threatening.

A teenage male was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing GBH and has been taken into custody.

This is the second stabbing on East Street in just two weeks. On Tuesday May 31 at 8.30pm a teenager was left in a life threatening condition after being stabbed on the street, which is home to a popular market.

Two people were arrested and the nineteen year old victim is now recovering, with police saying

his condition is no longer lifethreatening.

Police implemented a section 60 stop and search authority from 6pm this Monday running until 7am on Tuesday “as a proactive measure to prevent and deter incidents of violence”.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Passengers, bus drivers and politicians have weighed in on the plans to cut key Southwark bus routes to save money, as the debate continues to roll on since Sadiq Khan’s proposals were unveiled at the start of the month.

The 78, 12 and 45 are among sixteen bus routes that could be scrapped entirely under the proposals, which mayor Khan and Transport for London (TfL) have put forward under pressure from central government to cut costs. The government has provided £5 billion in emergency support since the pandemic.

The routes have large stretches that pass through areas like Nunhead, Peckham, Camberwell and Walworth, which do not have Tube stations close by. The 12 would be largely replaced by TfL extending the 148, and the 78 route would be largely covered by the 388 coming down to Peckham - but the stretch that serves Nunhead to the south-east would not be replaced.

Amir, a driver for the 78 route, called the proposed cuts “a kick right below the belt.” He added: “After all that we’ve been through over the past two years… I don’t think it’s fair.”.

Amir, who has been a bus driver for eleven years, has had Covid-19 three times, including once before the first lockdown. “I was coughing up blood,” he added.

Haroon, another driver who has been in the job a decade, said it felt like “a punch in the guts” when he heard the news. “What are they doing?”

Both Amir and Haroon work for Arriva, a private company, and said they first found out about the changes from a newsletter sent out by Go-Ahead, a rival business.

TfL contracts out its bus services to several private operators. Arriva is one of the largest bus companies in London contracted to run about 100 bus routes.

Go-Ahead is the largest in the capital, operating about a quarter of all TfL routes.

Arriva said its staff were told about the possible loss of one their routes on June 1, the same day as TfL made the public announcement. Bus drivers said they were worried about the possibility of getting made redundant. Arriva said it did not expect to make anyone redundant.

A spokesperson for Arriva said: “We can confirm our staff were fully notified on TfL’s proposed changes to service 78 and other central London routes on the morning of 1st June, in line with the public announcement by TfL. “Added to this internal communication process, our Trade Union partners were also briefed at the same time. We have also reassured our staff, as part of this briefing, that no redundancies would be expected as a result of these proposed changes.”

visiting them. “I have them in the bus the whole time,” Amir said. “It gives [the residents] a connection with the outside world.”

The P12, which connects Nunhead with Peckham, Bermondsey and Surrey Quays, is not under threat. But the bus stop is too far away for many people in this part of Nunhead to walk easily, passengers and drivers said. And for people commuting very early in the morning, the P12 starts running too late, at around 7am through Nunhead. The first 78 bus is at 6.15, and is always busy with people going to work, Amir said. “What’s going to happen to them, how are they going to get to their job now?”

One passenger, who did not want to be named, was shocked to hear about the planned cuts and said they would have a

big effect on her elderly mother, who lives locally.

Another, an elderly woman named Tina, said she “massively relied” on the 78.

“Now I’ll have to walk everywhere.”

A fourth passenger said: “They don’t want us to drive a car, but now they’re getting rid of the buses. It doesn’t make any sense. Do they want us to get around at all?”

Local political parties have all spoken out against the proposed cuts, with Labour, who control Southwark Council, launching a petition in early June, as we reported last week. Liberal Democrat leader Victor Chamberlain said that Southwark residents deserved better.

Party activists argued that cuts would weaken social links and make it harder for people to get to work, as well as undermining Khan’s environmental credentials.

A spokesperson for the Greens said: “If these cuts go ahead, it will harm many residents of Southwark who can least afford to lose these services. Many of us will find it harder to get to work, see family and friends, or get to essential services.

During a climate emergency we need to be encouraging and expanding these vital public transport options, not cutting them.

“The loss of the 12 and 78 and further route changes will have a terrible impact on areas such as Peckham, Dulwich and

Police were reportedly told by onlookers at 6pm on Sunday, June 12 where the suspect had gone.

Peckham Rye Station is being restored to former Victorian glory

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk For months, Peckham Rye Station has been clad in scaffolding but soon commuters will be able to witness the station in its former Victorian glory.

The restoration project is being overseen by architect Benedict O’Looney and funded by Network Rail with contributions from the Railway Heritage Trust and the Heritage of London Trust Works include cleaning the Suffolk brick and Bath stonework, renewing the lower roofs with hand-pressed clay tiles, and restoring the upper roofs’ lost iron cresting.

On completion at the end of the year, the front facade will be expertly illuminated so commuters can rediscover the building’s elaborate detailing.

The station, opened in 1865, was designed by the renowned British architect Charles Henry Driver, the

creative mind behind Brighton’s West Pier Pavillion and Preston and West Lancashire Stations.

Benedict O’Looney, the project’s Lead Architect, said: “It was designed by a really top Victorian architect and we’ve learned a great deal from working on this.

“We’ve learned he was this amazing architect doing not only these showy stations but that he was also a brilliant cast iron designer.”

Benedict has overseen the remaking and gilding of the new cast metal crestings which were originally designed by Driver.

“It’s beyond the basic architecture that proliferates nowadays. These wild florid organic forms - tendril-like things - bring botanical forms into industrial design.

“It’s this idea of bringing art and organic form to the everyday person.”

The restorations are a prelude to the Peckham Rye Station enhancement plans, submitted to the council by Network Rail earlier this year, following

years of consultation.

The project, expected to cost tens of millions, involves building a new rear entrance, wider platforms, larger gate lines and improved disabled access.

Resoration to the facades is the latest chapter in over a decade’s worth of projects at the station.

Since 2009, Benedict’s practice, Benedict O’Looney Architects, have restored the Old Waiting Room and forecourt windows, the North Wing interior, and the station’s lost 1930s loos.

Describing the station’s style as Romanesque-House Gothic, Benedict said they even discovered a forgotten cast-iron staircase buried under rubble in the abandoned South-East Wing.

Asked why modern stations lack the grandeur of old Victorian designs, O’Looney said: “Architectural teaching is pretty light in the modern period.

“Young people aren’t directed to life studies which you need to create these forms which the Victorians mastered.”

Unite regional officer Simon McCartney said: “Strike action will inevitably cause severe disruption across London but this is a direct result of TfL management’s repeated failure to offer guarantees on pensions, pay or job cuts.

“Strike action and the resulting disruption can be avoided by TfL making a clear commitment it won’t cut workers’ pensions or jobs, while also making a cost of living pay rise to our members.”

The latest Tube strike plans come after 4,000 RMT union members walked out on June 7, bringing much of the Underground network to a standstill.

The Unite plans are likely to be less disruptive, as only a quarter as many

workers will go on strike, and many of these are not frontline staff.

TfL has previously said it would axe 500-600 positions as part of efforts to shore up its finances.

The transport agency said it was “committed to protecting as many jobs as possible for people who work here today” and that it would cut jobs by not replacing people who left or retired.

Some 250 of the job losses will be customer service positions TfL did not respond to a request for comment on the latest strike plans.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Londoners are set to be hit with yet more travel misery later this month, with Tube workers to walk out yet again - this time on the same day as a massive railway strike.

Unite workers at Transport for London (TfL) are walking out on Tuesday, June 21 over a pay, pensions and jobs dispute.

Services could also be affected on June 22, the union warned.

Railway workers at thirteen operators, including Southeastern, and Network Rail, which runs the lines themselves, are going on strike on June 21, 23 and 25.

The railway industry is under pressure, with more people working from home.

Unions are concerned this could mean job losses and reduced timetables.

Network Rail wants to cut 2,500 jobs in maintenance to make £2 billion in savings, although it said this would not compromise safety.

Council criticised for missing bike hangar target Exclusive

The council said it would have put in 500 bike hangars, which allow people to park bikes safely, by the end of March 2022. Instead it had installed 401 hangars, according to Liberal Democrat research shared with the News.

The Lib Dems said that letting people store their bikes, which often cost

hundreds of pounds or more, without fear of them being stolen, was key to getting Southwark residents more active and helping tackle the climate emergency.

The news comes despite Southwark having more than 8,000 people on the waiting list for new bike hangar places, the most of any London borough. And, as we revealed last week, bike thefts in Southwark over the past year were higher than anywhere else in the capital other than Tower Hamlets. The Labourcontrolled council has installed about 100 bike hangars over the past year alone.

Commenting, Cllr Graham Neale, a Lib Dem councillor in St George’s ward in the north of the borough, said: “Southwark Labour has outdone itself, missing a target that was unambitious even by their standards. Providing cycle storage is key if we are to encourage more active travel and tackle the climate emergency.

Yet it seems Southwark Labour is stuck in the past, failing to provide adequate and affordable cycle storage, while continuing to offer free car parking on our estates.”

Some 60,715 people are on the waiting list to hire a bike hangar space across

London’s 32 boroughs.

This means nearly three times as many people are waiting for a space, as there are places to hire in bike hangars – with only 22,592 spaces available as of March.

The number of people on the waiting list in London has risen 28 per cent from 47,578 since a study conducted last autumn.

Yet the true figure is are likely to be even higher as it only shows those who have registered for a bicycle storage space, meaning they underestimate demand.

More than half of Londoners see a lack of cycle parking as a key deterrent to cycling, according to analysis by Transport for London (TfL).

Cllr Catherine Rose, cabinet member for parks, streets and clean air, said: “In April, we guaranteed more than 500 more bike hangars to local people, in the locations they told us they wanted them.

We have already created 2,616 secure bike hangar spaces, this is the third highest of all London boroughs. Ongoing work means that hundreds more bike hangar spaces have been added since March.”

As there are six spaces to a hangar, Cllr Rose’s comment suggests that Southwark now has 436 hangars - 35 more than at the end of March, or 210 more spaces.

Cllr Rose added: “Further to this, we have committed £2.5million to fit 3000 more secure bike hangar spaces.”

Deptford section of Cycleway 4 finally due to open

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The Creek Road section of Cycleway 4 is set to reopen next month, a year after being finished.

The segregated bike lane, which will eventually run continuously from London Bridge to Greenwich, is already open in the stretch from London Bridge to Rotherhithe.

The stretch on Creek Road in Deptford has been finished since last May, but has been closed to cyclists because of roadworks on the bridge over the creek itself, on the approach to Greenwich.

The Creek Road was first reported by Greenwich news site 853. Greenwich Council confirmed the story to the News, with a spokesperson saying: “We are working with TfL, who is developing plans to open the existing cycle track by July.”

With the Tooley Street and Jamaica Road sections from London Bridge to Rotherhithe already open, and Creek Road set to open in July, the two remaining sections to open in between are Lower Road and Evelyn Street. Evelyn Street is also set to open this summer, and the News has asked TfL for more details.

Southwark Council has not said when the Lower Road section will open.

As the News reported recently, every one of Southwark’s air pollution monitors is over the limits set by the World Health Organisation.

Southwark is the fourteenth-worst local authority in the country for air quality, out of more than 300, according to research by Asthma + Lung UK. The British government’s requirements are less strict, at 40 µg/ m3, but Southwark’s air still falls foul of these rules at several monitoring stations. Not everything in the borough is under the council’s control. Campaigners have warned that Transport for London’s (TfL) Silvertown Tunnel in Greenwich, backed by mayor Sadiq Khan, could lead to more traffic jams and more cars heading for Tower Bridge, as an alternative route across the river.

The transport arm of the Met ran the educational programme last Friday morning, June 10. Along with e-scooter collisions doubling in London throughout 2021, the complaints from the Old Kent Road will likely not ease people’s concerns about e-scooters.

There has been debate about the dangers e-scooters pose to people who are blind or impartially sighted.

As previously reported by the News, the Royal National Institute of Blind People has said E-scooters are fastmoving, operate quietly, making them difficult to detect, and are often ridden on pavements despite rules prohibiting this.

Ledbury Estate demolition and redevelopment plans get rubber stamp approval

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk At least fifty current or former patients of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) killed someone or are suspected of killing someone between 2003 and 2018, the News can reveal.

The data, released in response to a Freedom of Information request by charity Hundred Families, shows “shocking” failings by the trust, a spokesperson for the organisation said.

Mental Southwark Council have given the demolition and rebuilding of four Ledbury Estate tower blocks the green light, bringing a five-year-long saga to an end.

The decision was made last Wednesday week, June 8, by the planning committee who voted unanimously in favour of the plans.

In 2017, it emerged that Ledbury Estate blocks, Old Kent Road, were feared a ‘death trap’ because “strengthening works” had never taken place following the Ronan Point gas explosion.

In the following years, many tenants and residents moved out from the affected blocks - Bromyard House, Sarnesfield House, Peterchurch House and Skenfrith House - to find safe homes elsewhere.

In a March 2021 ballot, out of a range of options, 86% of voters chose to demolish and rebuild the blocks. The council decision ratifies this vote.

Thomas Ennis, a Skenfrith House resident who will move into Bromyard House once completed said: “Relieved is how I feel even though I was expecting it. You never knew if it will ever actually happen.

“The overall scheme is so good and the 165 trees getting planted - I’m so pleased about it. It’s going to be really great.”

Under the plans, 340 new homes will be constructed, a 116 increase on the original 224 homes, and and a new TRA hall.

Under the plans, 76.4% of the homes will be at affordable social rent, a 50.5% net uplift on the previous set-up, and 83% will be dual aspect, meaning they have windows in adjacent walls allowing for multiple exterior views.

There will also be a new estate road, new car parking and extensive open space for children. Ex-residents get priority on new flats.

At the Planning Committee meeting, a local resident did raise concerns about increased traffic congestion around the area due to construction vehicles and more car journeys as new families move into their new homes. The Planning Committee confirmed this was something they would look into.

Councillors also discussed making service charges inclusive of social rent, but concluded that provisions were already in place for preventing excessive service charges.

Ledbury Estate residents praised the council’s plans and the extent of consultation, saying they’d felt “fully consulted”.

In a letter read out at the planning committee meeting they expressed support for the proposals and quoted Mark Twain saying: “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”

Demolition on the Bromyard site will begin in September 2022, with the other three blocks being demolished and rebuilt over an eight year period.

Dallas Gopie was forced to move away from the Ledbury when the postGrenfell building works became “too much upheaval” for her. She now lives in an Elephant and Castle apartment which she says is beautiful but adds, “you cannot beat the Ledbury”.

She said if she’s still “up and jogging around” by the time the new homes are finished, she’ll move back in.

Southwark has second highest number of buildings with serious fire defects

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark has the secondhighest number of buildings in London with ‘simultaneous evacuation’ advice, meaning they have serious fire safety issues.

Five years on from the Grenfell Tower tragedy, people living in 94 buildings in Southwark have instructions not to ‘stay put’ in their block, but to leave instead, because of fire safety defects. These include cladding, but could also be other problems.

Southwark’s 94 blocks are behind only Tower Hamlets, which has 165, according to the response to a Freedom of Information request put to the London Fire Brigade by trade publication Inside Housing. Hackney, Newham and Greenwich make up the rest of the top five.

Among the buildings in Southwark with simultaneous evacuation orders is the council’s Marie Curie House in Camberwell, which has the same fire safety issues as

Lakanal House, where six people died in a fire in 2009. Residents of Lakanal, as well as Grenfell, were told to stay put in the event of a fire. Astonishingly, the councilcommissioned report into fire safety at Marie Curie failed to answer the question of why defects were not addressed earlier.

Lakanal itself and the response to the tragedy may provide clues to why Grenfell took place, according to a report into building regulation and fire safety written as part of the inquiry into the 72 deaths in the 2017 fire.

Edinburgh University’s Ken Bisby said that the government should have worked out whether the experts interviewed at the Lakanal inquest represented the building industry more broadly, and whether safety regulation was being enforced properly.

Prof Bisby added: “Without any obvious attempt to identify, understand, and address these wider failings of competence and oversight, these factors were free to fester within the industry, and eventually to manifest in the refurbishment and overcladding of Grenfell Tower, and in

the design and construction of hundreds (thousands?) of other residential buildings in England and Wales, with disastrous consequences”.

Southwark Council leader Kieron Williams said the council was “working every day to improve the fire safety of council homes” and would continue respond to the Grenfell inquiry recommendations.

He added: “The Grenfell Tower tragedy is imprinted on all our minds, as one of the darkest days our city has seen. Today we remember the 72 precious lives lost on that dreadful night five years ago, and stand together across London to say we will do everything we can to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.

The council will light its buildings in green in solidarity with everyone involved in the tragedy, Cllr Williams said. “It is a sad truth that after five long years we are still waiting for many of the national changes needed to prevent another tragedy of this kind, and I urge the Government to act this year without further delay.”

A common criticism of Southwark’s housebuilding process is that officers do not consult effectively with existing residents during the pre-planning process. The council has always maintained that consultation is carried

out properly for every project.

Minutes from the October 5 meeting when the Brenchley Gardens report was submitted record that Cllr Stephanie Cryan, then in charge of council housing at Southwark, said there was “a robust and comprehensive engagement process in the pipeline which takes residents and members of the public through the entirety of a development project’s stages in great detail.”

The council wants to build dozens of extra homes on top of existing buildings and in a communal garden at Brenchley Gardens Estate. The plans were paused in June last year, with officers set to start working on them again this month.

The cabinet will decide on whether to adopt the scrutiny commission’s recommendations at a meeting this week.

Southwark’s new housing boss has been told by councillors to make sure staff understand scrutiny

Southwark’s housing scrutiny commission said a report that officers submitted on the Brenchley Gardens Estate in Honor Oak last October contained “inaccuracies” and “failed to acknowledge the poor handling of the consultation processes” with residents.

Because of this, the commission, which is made up of Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors, as well as borough residents, recommended that new Southwark housing boss Cllr Darren Merrill “takes steps to ensure all officers

‘Bus cuts part of government’s levelling down of London’ Kieron Williams Southwark Council leader

S

outhwark is facing unprecedented and damaging cuts to its public transport.

Across the city, seventy eight of London’s bus routes will be affected by recent proposals, with seventeen of the affected routes serving our borough.

These cuts to our transport services are a huge misstep, making it harder for our residents to get around the city, and making journeys longer and often more expensive. The reduction in these services, particularly those at night, will also risk having a serious impact on the safety of passengers. The Government needs to step up, provide Transport for London (TfL) with a decent long term funding deal, and stop their obvious attempts to level down our capital.

These reductions will also have a negative impact on the environment and air quality. Cutting public transport at the same time as we are encouraging Londoner’s to leave their cars at home is entirely counter-productive.

TfL is still recovering from the huge financial damage caused by the pandemic. It reports that, in the latest funding settlement, the Government is asking TfL to cut the bus network by 4% by 2025.

One of the routes proposed to be removed, the 12 bus, is an much-loved London bus route, and many residents

in Southwark will have made use of it to get to and from the West End. These cuts would see that route removed completely, after 115 years of serving the capital.

The Government has forced TfL into this position by a series of shambolic short term funding settlements and unrealistic demands. London’s buses keep our communities connected and provide a reliable way to get around for the elderly, people with disabilities, and lower-income Londoners and the vital workers that keep our city’s economy working 24 hours a day.

These cuts are a political choice, forced on TfL by a government making an active decision to run down our city. Compare London to dozens of other major cities around the world.

When Boris Johnson was Mayor of London, he agreed to cut £700 million of government funding to TfL, making London one of the only transport system in the world that does not receive any significant regular subsidy from its national government. This means that in recent years, over 70% of TfL costs have been paid for by fares. Add this to the fact that an estimated £500 million is raised every year from Londoners paying Vehicle Excise Duty, which is collected by Government and spent on transport infrastructure outside the capital. The government is choosing to

move Londoners’ money out of our city.

These regressive cuts will affect many of our lowest income residents during the cost of living crisis. Hard working people who keep the city running will now need to break their journey and wait for multiple buses as they try to get to work. The Hopper fare was a brilliant idea that made getting around London easier and more affordable, but these cuts mean that great idea is now just papering over the cracks in a transport service that the Government is simply allowing to wither on the vine.

Southeast London’s public transport is already less well-served than other parts of London and has weathered previous cuts. Our small number of tube stations means buses are the backbone of our transport network. If we are to build the homes and town centres people want and need, we have to have a public transport system that can serve them. I would urge local people and businesses to complete the TfL consultation and join me in calling upon the government to deliver the investment essential to stop these cuts by signing our local petition.

‘Vote of confidence is shocking’

A

fter months of speculation and scandal after scandal, last week Conservative Members of Parliament finally held a vote of confidence in Boris Johnson as Prime Minister and Leader of the Conservative party.

148 Conservative MPs voted against him, with 211 supporting him. It is hard to say which statistic is more shocking – that 4 in 10 of his own members of Parliament don’t have confidence in him or that, after all that has happened, almost 6 in 10 still do.

This was a worse result than Theresa May, John Major and Margaret Thatcher before him achieved in similar confidence votes, but it also shows how out of step a majority of Conservative MPs are with the British public, two thirds of whom want to see lying Boris Johnson gone from the top of our government.

I am a Co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Adult Social Care, and throughout the first two waves of the Covid-19 pandemic, I met weekly with representatives from care providers, care homes and people who rely on care, so that I could take up their concerns directly with the government.

These weekly meetings were a shocking insight into the shortages in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the inadequate funding, lack of Covid testing, the struggles with covering for sick colleagues and the desperately sad deaths of both care home residents and staff. When Ministers said that they had thrown a ‘protective ring’ around care homes, the care home providers I spoke with said that simply wasn’t true.

The care workers that I spoke to knew the rules that the government had imposed, understood why they had to be

imposed and stuck to them at all times.

Not a single nurse or doctor that I spoke to when I visited King’s College Hospital was under any doubt about the rules and why they needed to stick to them, even when it meant really difficult decisions for patients.

And when Conservative MP Michael Fabricant falsely suggested that teachers and nurses might have held secret parties like the Conservatives did repeatedly at 10 Downing Street he was rightly pilloried for slandering our front line workers who had put everyone else’s needs above their own day in, day out for months on end.

Conservative MPs have now made their choice, which is to support a failing and flailing Conservative Prime Minister who isn’t fit to govern and if he had an ounce of decency, respect or responsibility would have stood down voluntarily many months ago.

The loss of the 78 bus will have a devastating effect in Nunhead for the disabled, elderly and families. For many of our children, how will they safely get to their schools? When did the people who make decisions that affect our lives in this country become so totally uncaring ?

STORY: What happened to the tram that would have linked Peckham and central London?

I met a guy, a few years ago, who worked on the West London tram through Ealing. He was getting masses of abuse from motoring groups and residents totally against it.

I wonder, if the Cross-River tram was cancelled for similar reasons. There is a lot of opposition to measures that make driving difficult. Just look at the opposition to LTN’s.

Your article omits to mention a key factor in the tram scheme being scrapped was the opposite by the Lib Dems in Camden to a terminus location there. Although we had a site lined up in Peckham, in Camden it was a major political issue which ultimately scuppered the scheme.

Usual story of Lib Dems looking both ways at once to attract votes undermining the greater good for all. So not surprising then some people complain politicians never do anything.

Fines are all well and good to stop bad housing but there is more to it, of course

I

t’s a rare week when we don’t get reports from Southwark council tenants on problems with someone’s council flat going unfixed for weeks and months at a time.

Rats scaring babies, leaks streaming down the ceiling, cracks forming in the walls, bed bugs biting

children - we hear it all. Maybe that’s to be expected, given Southwark’s status as the largest social housing landlord in London, and the fourth-largest in the UK, with 55,000 homes to keep up.

We reported in this week’s paper on government plans to slap unlimited fines on social landlords

like Southwark, as well as housing associations, if they are found not to be keeping homes in a proper state of repair. Could this affect Southwark Council? There are a number of important caveats to be made.

First, despite the horror stories we regularly hear and often report on in the paper, Southwark’s own

figures show that the number of repair requests made each year by residents dropped to 150,000 last year, down from nearly 220,000 a decade earlier. The council approved more than £59 million

for housing repairs in its 2022/2023 budget and says it plans to spend £400 million on repairs by the end of the 2024/2025 financial year.

Second, while anything that protects renters of any tenure from the Dickensian conditions we often

hear about is welcome, it’s pretty rich of the Conservative government to start threatening councils

with fines for underperformance, given the enormous cuts made to local authority grants since the Tories first took control of Downing Street with the Liberal Democrats in 2010. This bill has the air of another Conservative attack on Labour councils, which tend to build more social housing.

Third, the social housing regulation bill that would give government these powers was only

introduced in the House of Lords earlier this month, and still needs to go through another reading in June before it even gets to the Commons - so it is still a long way from being passed into law.

Hannah is on a mission for SE1

While still at primary school, the intrepid Hannah Quigley sent her ‘The Magic Sweet Shop’ script off to the BBC, no doubt with dreams of all those dreams that young gogetters have. What she got back was ‘an encouraging response and lots of signed photos and stickers,’ which was still enough motivation for Hannah to never give up on her dream, writes Michael Holland.

Growing up on the Rockingham Estate before moving to the first Coin Street Housing Co-op, where an environment of the National Theatre, Old and Young Vic on her doorstep kept those early dreams alive, she says, in a rush of enthusiasm, ’I took part in performing arts workshops on Saturdays at the Southbank Centre, and by the time I was 14, my older siblings were doing Saturday catering jobs at the National Theatre so I was able to get free tickets to see shows. ‘ She stopped to take in air. ‘ I saw Robert Lepage’s ‘A Midsummers Night Dream’ - the design was exciting with lots of mud on the Olivier stage, and Timothy Spall as Bottom was really fun!’

Okay. ‘I also saw the very compelling Antony Sher in ‘The Irresistible Rise of Arturo Ui’, also in the same theatre.’ I tried to interject with another question but I was tacitly denied. ‘Those productions were a great introduction to theatre, as well as Machinal at the Young Vic, which I saw on a school visit.’ Any thoughts of stopping this young woman from SE1 in her tracks were pointless. ‘All of those productions really

engaged and drew me into the worlds they were creating.’

Hannah had gone silent and I knew it was so all her words could sink in.

They sunk in. This was someone who had been hooked by theatre. At sixth form, Hannah studied Performing Art and Theatre Studies and it was there that she realised she was more interested in directing than acting.

After graduating from university she put herself out there getting work experience to build up her knowledge and skills in the National Theatre and the Young Vic. ‘There are so many different routes through which I could learn and navigate,’ she recalls.

Since then, Hannah has not only codirected a Nicholas Nickleby in Hong Kong but, as she tells me, ‘had a run of “firsts” as a director, which was all amazing, as I learnt so much and was working with so many great people, from directing my first promenade theatre, directing my first tour that went into schools and first audio drama.’

And there was also an Oliver Twist national tour that Covid put an end to: ‘It was a great production that celebrated the work of Deaf and Disabled people on and off the stage, which is something that I am really passionate about,’ she remembers sadly.

But now Hannah is back in her own postcode to direct Marvin’s Binoculars at the Unicorn Theatre. I asked what got her back. ‘When I first read the script I

Additionally, that we have considered audio description within the writing of the piece and have audio description of the characters and design available on the website… I really hope that a wide range of families and schools have the opportunity to experience this play, which is rich in its theatricality, design, characters and story.

We have just had our first preview this half term and it was such a joy to have children and parents engaging with the beautiful range of themes that the piece explores.’

He also had a strong affinity with nature and the natural world which Marvin has, as well as also living in a city. So I think I generally bring a sensitivity to working with emotional themes which is really important when working with people and young audiences.’

The play tells this tale

‘Reflections of the way life used to be’ sang The Supremes in the Sixties, which was before Walworth chronicler and photographer Darren Lock was born, but could very well have been the title of the fourth of the books he has published along with co-author Mark Baxter, another local boy, writes Michael Holland...

Darren was born in Lambeth Hospital in 1972 and spent his first four years living in Portland Street, just off East Street Market. The family then moved on to the Aylesbury Estate, ‘which wasn’t that notorious at that time,’ he claims, ‘but it was in my early teens.’ Adding, ‘Growing up there was definitely an education.’

The young Walworth Boy enjoyed his early schooling at St Peter’s in Liverpool Grove: ‘It was a lovely school with a fantastic headmaster, Mr Dibbin, and a good head teacher, Mr Payne.’ After a reflective pause, he continues: ‘And the milk lady, Mrs Bird, is someone who I still remember fondly today.’

As Darren grew older, his perspective changed and secondary school did not go as well as primary, which many of us can relate to. ‘I messed around a lot and didn’t take it seriously,’ he says now. The biggest regret I have in life is not getting a good education.’

In his early 20s, Darren visited the Local History Library at the Borough.

His eyes light up at the memory. ‘It

was then that I started getting in to the history of Walworth after looking through the archives of old pictures of the ever-changing streets and shops; I was hooked and fascinated by it all so I started collecting photos and taking my own shots too.’

This fascination with the area he grew up in led to his own vast collection of photos. Darren has documented the demolition of his old estate and the new builds; the inner-workings of many of the iconic shops, such as the making of pie-mash in Arments and a new suit coming together at the dexterous hands of the late George Dyer - Threadneedle Man; and all architectural changes have been photographed by Darren since the interest in his environment began, but who was ever going to see them?

‘I had a brainwave,’ he exclaims brightly.

‘I thought, I’ve got this big collection of photos but no audience, so I started the Facebook group “Now and Then Walworth” in 2009.’

The group is still going strong today with 14,000 members.

I asked how he teamed up with his co-author: ‘I met Mark Baxter in the mid-90s when he ran a 60s night in the Sully Shuffles - formally The Fountain - in the Camberwell Rd,’ begins the photographer. ‘We kept in touch over the years and it was him that came up with the idea of a book after he saw the growth of the Facebook group and thought we

had something.’

Mark has been a constant mover and shaker in SE London - and way beyond for many years now and even back then he was known as a man that made things happen and got things done. Their first book - Walworth Through Time - came out in 2010, so four books later prove that his hunch was right.

Darren and Mark have brought together a fascinating collection of old and new photographs that have been individually merged to show the surprisingly rapid changes in London SE17 through the decades. Readers can compare the old Walworth with the fast-emerging new, which is a melting pot of cultures and classes living cheek by jowl.

‘We actually started this new book in 2019,’ says Darren, ‘but with Covid kicking in it was stopped in its tracks.

But Walworth Reflections can now be purchased in all good book shops and in the best pie-mash shop in the world, Arments, come mid-July,’ Darren tells me with a smile, once again using the opportunity to promote the area that he loves.

The book is officially out on July 15th and can be pre-ordered on Amazon at £15.99.

92-year-old Derek Kinrade gives us 58 to choose from

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A 92-year-old Peckhamite and local historian has written ‘Peckham Personalities’, a book about the “kaleidoscopic personalities” that have lived in Peckham throughout history.

The limited-edition book, intended as an historical record, is not for sale.

Derek Kinrade is instead donating copies to local people and libraries, including the Southwark Archives in Borough.

Derek, who spent his career in the civil service and became an author in later life, moved to Peckham 1988 and instantly “fell in love”.

“I fell in love with Peckham. I liked the fact it was down-to-earth, had a multicultural society and, on the whole, got on well. It was bit downtrodden, a bit depressed and had the occasional murder. But it was an interesting place and a very artistic place.”

Derek started documenting Peckham’s history to “demonstrate that it’s always been a force to be reckoned with”.

different people with a connection to the area, from pioneering theologians to gentleman cricketers.

All the personalities are deceased and many, such as the Georgian-era gardener Peter Collinson, were celebrities in their time but largely forgotten now.

In his introduction, Derek writes: “Peckham has, through its various incarnations tended to a certain uniqueness. It has invoked a curious pride and affection, at times in spite of

its criminality.”

Derek says he is proud of how Peckham has changed in his 30 plus years living there. He said: “When we came it was ‘up and coming’ and now it’s ‘up and come’.

“I’m terribly aware of what is going on and the music that attracts you people even if I’m on the outside of it.”

Derek is an active partner in the Peckham Heritage Regeneration Partnership, a group of volunteers and organisations that preserves Peckham’s history.

Frank, 80, who came to the UK from California to research the Georgian-era gardener Peter Collinson.

Love blossomed and in 2018 they married. Derek describes his wife, who helped inspire ‘Peckham Personalities’ as “miraculous”.

Derek has lived through eighteen Prime Ministers. His favourite of all was Clement Attlee and he thinks Boris Johnson is too “flamboyant”.

Derek is now collaborating on a book about Peckham’s architecture, with architect Benedict O’Looney, which he hopes to publish in September.

Perhaps the squad’s most famous recent operation was the prevention of a plot to steal the famous De Beers Millennium Star diamond, and other diamonds, from the O2 Arena in Greenwich, then known as the Millennium Dome.

The £200 million diamond was on display as part of an exhibition at the dome in the year 2000. The team of six robbers used a JCB digger to break through the side of the building, using smoke bombs to sow confusion. They then used a nail gun and a sledgehammer to smash through the protected glass case housing the diamond itself. They planned to escape on the Thames on a boat they had moored next to the building.

But unbeknownst to them, the Flying Squad were well aware of their plans.

Some 200 officers were stationed within the building, including some in plain clothes disguised as Dome staff.

Four suspects were arrested inside as they tried to smash into the display case and two more were arrested outside while providing surveillance. Six men were given sentences varying from five to eighteen years for the conspiracy.

Flying Squad detectives also arrested James Hurley, a man from Bermondsey, who they originally considered the mastermind of the plot. Hurley was not present on the day of the foiled robbery, and officers later tracked him down to the Costa del Sol in Spain.

Charges were eventually dropped because the crown prosecution service did not believe there was enough evidence to secure a conviction. A Scotland Yard source told the Daily Record newspaper at the time that they believed Hurley planned to sell the diamonds to the Russian mafia.

Despite this and many other successful operations by the Flying Squad, the unit has also suffered from major corruption, dating back to the 1970s.

The squad’s commander, Detective Chief Inspector Kenneth Drury was imprisoned for eight years after being convicted on five counts of corruption, for accepting bribes.

Twelve other detectives in the squad were also sent to prison. And in 2001, three detectives were imprisoned for seven years each for taking part in a £1.5 million hijacking of a security van. Journalist Graeme McLagan found enough material to publish a book on police corruption, Bent Coppers.

Why are they called the Flying Squad?

Versions differ. The Met’s history says that a Daily Mail reporter called them “flying squad of picked detectives because of their mobility”, and the name stuck.

The BBC reported that the squad had the name because they were not limited to any particular part of London, but could “fly” all over the city.

The Flying Squad were also called ‘Sweeney Todd’ in cockney rhyming slang, giving rise to the TV show The Sweeney.

Elite police unit who raided Bermondsey estate last week

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The News reported last week on the alarming experience of one Bermondsey man who woke up to find armed police officers in his garden.

We later learned that this was part of a raid on three men in Marden Square who were suspected of kidnapping three others. The operation, police told us, was led by a section of the police called the Flying Squad. But who are they, and why are they called that?

The Flying Squad are the Met’s elite group of police detectives tasked with tackling violent crime, with a history stretching back more than 100 years.

They also have a more chequered past, with widespread corruption uncovered in the 1970s.

The squad was formed in 1918, when Detective Chief Inspector Wensley brought together twelve detectives, with the aim of tackling serious and armed crime in London - which had been on the increase, according to the Met’s official history.

The new squad were put on a trial run,

and given the power to roam throughout London in cars and a covered wagon rented to them by the Great Western Railway company. The horse-drawn wagon had spy-holes cut in the sides, allowing officers to peer through undetected.

They did well enough to be formed into a full squad by the end of the year, and given new cars with a top speed of 40mph, impressive for those days.

A decade on in 1929, the squad was given a new fleet of six cars that allowed detectives to get around even faster, and they began to get more widely known in the public consciousness.

Part of their job was to ride around in these cars and look out reactively for thefts, pickpocketing and other kinds of criminal activity. They would then jump out and try to arrest the wrongdoers.

The officers were also encouraged to associate with criminals and spend time in known criminal hangouts, in order to build up contacts and stop crimes proactively.

By Richard Latham sport@southwarknews.co.uk LEWIS GOLDSWORTHY and Lewis Gregory kept Surrey waiting to wrap up victory on the third day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match with Somerset at Taunton this week.

The visitors were bowled out without adding to their overnight score of 382 for seven, Hashim Amla again absent through illness, but still had a commanding lead of 202. Jordan Clark ended unbeaten on 63.

A three-day finish looked probable when Somerset slipped to 119 for four in their second innings. But Goldsworthy had other ideas, hitting a career-best 67 before Gregory weighed in with 71 not out.

By the close, Somerset had reached 319 for eight in their second innings, building a precarious lead of 117 on a pitch that has rewarded good batting and bowling.

The day began well for the home side when Gregory ended the Surrey first innings in the opening over.

With his second delivery, he had Gus Atkinson caught behind off a defensive nick and four balls later Dan Worrall edged another catch to Steve Davies with a more aggressive drive.

Amla, who had retired unbeaten on 19 at the start of day two, did not appear and Clark was left stranded without facing.

Somerset lost their first wicket on 16 when Ben Green edged a good delivery from Worrall to Ryan Patel, who grasped a sharp chance at third slip.

Tom Lammonby struck 4 fours in moving to 20, but then top-edged an attempted pull off Atkinson and skyed to backward point with the total on 37.

Tom Abell took 12 from the first over of the day sent down by former team-mate Jamie Overton and by lunch he and Tom Banton had advanced the score to 93 with few alarms.

Banton, attempting to establish himself as a Championship batsman this summer, had shown good judgement in moving to 31 when flicking at a leg-side delivery from Overton and unluckily getting a touch through to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

Somerset looked sunk when an error of judgement by Abell, who had been in impressive form, saw him run out for 45

Surrey’s Jacks said: “We would have taken our current position at the start of the day. It’s a pretty placid pitch and the bowlers kept having to come back, which we did really well.

“We now just need a good couple of sessions tomorrow and hopefully we can come away with a win. I was happy to make some runs yesterday, batting a bit higher in the order, which gives me more responsibility.

“Today I had to fight hard for my wickets because the ball went pretty soft, so I was pleased to play my part in a tough day in the field.”

Harms then led an assault which saw 25 runs come off the last two overs. He finished on 83 not out, his highest score for Dulwich, off 76 balls, as the innings closed on 270-8 at the end of the permitted 66 overs.

Banstead had 54 overs to get the runs, and their openers set off at high speed against attacking fields, adding 42 in just six overs before

The seamers had gone for 66 in the first ten overs when Purshouse turned to Jon Lodwick and Alex Gledhill. Lodwick immediately put a brake on the scoring, conceding just 15 off his first eight overs, but it was leg spinner Ahmed Khan who made the breakthrough, removing the dangerous Ayush Patel for 60, off 70 balls, with the score on 105 in the 24th over. Gledhill took the third wicket, but when Khan had Patrick Rowe lbw for 61 to make it 154-4 in the 36th over Banstead’s chance of winning faded.

But they were unable to force a victory and had to settle for a losing draw.

Kongo continues ‘learning curve’

Kongo, 29, claimed the WBC international silver welterweight belt after a decision of 97-93, 97-94 and 98-92 on the judges’ scorecards over ten rounds.

“There was a lot of pressure and I wanted to get him out, but remember this is my fifteenth fight,” Kongo said. “I did a lot of good stuff, but I made mistakes. This is a learning curve for me.

“To be honest, I think I started too fast and then thought, hold on, I need to slow down’. At the end of the day I got the win so I’m happy.

“Whoever wants it I’m here. I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing and keep moving forward. This is Chris Kongo’s time.”

There was another Southwark success as Walworth cruiserweight Richard Riakporhe edged closer to realising his dream of a world title fight with a spectacular victory over Fabio Turchi in an IBF eliminator.

Riakporhe, 32, moved his unbeaten record to 15-0 with a stoppage in the second round.

Riakporhe had Turchi doubled over after vicious left hook to the body. Turchi’s trainer entered the ring to end the bout.

It is the second fight in a row that Riakporhe has won with a body shot.

“I feel great, I didn’t have much time to get into it,” Riakporhe said.

“There were some points I was trying to target, my coaches are amazing. We had a game-plan, keep it long but look for the opportunity and when you can punish, do it and that’s exactly what I did.

Dutchman leaves Lions after 18 months at The Den

By Alex Jones sport@southwarknews.co.uk DUTCH midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld has joined newlypromoted Eredivisie outfit FC Emmen after leaving Millwall at the end of his contract.

Kieftenbeld, 31, was Gary Rowett’s first permanent signing as Lions boss in January 2021, making 38 league appearances since moving to The Den from Championship rivals Birmingham City.

Millwall’s retained list explained that discussions were ongoing between the club and Kieftenbeld, although he has since opted to return to his homeland where he last played in 2015.

“After seven great years in England, the time has come for me to return to

the Netherlands,” Kieftenbeld told the Dutch club’s official media channels.

“FC Emmen is a great club with ambition and I hope to be able to be important to the team with my experience.

“I am looking forward to entering the Eredivisie with FC Emmen in an atmospheric stadium like De Oude Meerdijk.”

FC Emmen’s chairman, Ronald Lubbers, confirmed that the club had attempted to bring Kieftenbeld back to the Netherlands in January 2021, but that he opted to join Millwall instead.

“Since then we have always kept in touch and are therefore happy that it has now worked out.

“With his experience, quality and role in the dressing room, Maikel will really add something.”

Thommo gets League One move

By Alex Jones sport@southwarknews.co.uk FORMER Millwall midfielder Ben Thompson has joined Peterborough United on a twoyear deal.

Thompson, 26, spent eight years at The Den after making his senior debut in 2014. The midfielder made 175 appearances for The Lions in all competitions, scoring 12 goals.

He played a key part in the Lions side that won promotion to the Championship via the playoffs in 2017/18, although he was sent out to Portsmouth on a season-long loan the following campaign before being recalled by then manager Neil Harris in January 2019.

Thompson reunited with his former manager after his contract at Millwall was cancelled by mutual consent at the end of January 2022, allowing him to join Harris’ Gillingham. However, he was released by the Gills just three months later after they were relegated to League Two, allowing him to join Peterborough.

The Posh won automatic promotion from League One in 2019/20, but suffered an immediate relegation from the Championship last season after slumping to a 22nd place finish.

Thompson becomes Grant McCann’s first signing as manager of Peterborough, with the East Anglian side looking to rebuild their squad this summer in order to challenge for promotion next season.

Lions may benefit from winter World Cup

By Alex Jones sport@southwarknews.co.uk THE 2022 World Cup would have started last week if officials had decided against moving the tournament to the winter.

While fans have a number of concerns about the competition being held in Qatar, it could end up being a blessing in disguise for Millwall.

George Saville was the only member of the Lions squad to feature for his country in the recent international break, starting in Northern Ireland’s 3-2 defeat against Kosovo in the Nations

League. However, Ian Baraclough’s side won’t feature at the World Cup after failing to qualify for the group stages.

Depending on their summer transfer business, Millwall may not have any players traveling to Qatar in November, as Bartosz Białkowski is unlikely to be called up to Poland’s World Cup squad. The same can be said of Tom Bradshaw, who hasn’t played for Wales since 2018.

As a result, Lions boss Gary Rowett may be able to keep his whole squad together during the six-week international break, which would give the players a significant period of time to rest and reset ahead of

the Championship restart on 10th December. This date marks the end of the group stages, meaning that a number of sides will be without their key players should they progress to the round of 16.

A number of club’s divisional rivals, especially those challenging for promotion, will likely see their season significantly disrupted by the tournament. This could give Millwall the upper hand in the second half of the season, especially if they’re challenging for the playoffs.

The 2022 World Cup is due to kick off on Monday 21st November, with the final being held on Sunday 18th December.

Wallace looking at pastures new

By Alex Jones sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL WINGER Jed Wallace is in discussions with other clubs over a potential transfer this summer, the News understands.

Wallace, 28, is at the end of his current contract, although the Lions have confirmed that they’ve offered the winger a new deal to remain at The Den. Should he depart, the club will need to replace the six goals and eleven assists that he registered in the Championship last season.

The News spoke to a source this week who confirmed that Wallace has yet to make a final decision on where he will play next season, and has not yet ruled out remaining at Millwall.

The club will be hoping to resolve the transfer saga as soon as possible, with the players set to return for preseason training at the start of next week. Wallace has claimed that he would like to decide on his future after

getting married in Spain this summer.

A number of teams have been linked with a move for Wallace, most recently West Bromwich Albion. The Baggies have already brought Reading midfielder John Swift and Brighton’s Jayson Molumby to The Hawthorns, with manager Steve Bruce reportedly keen on adding Millwall’s mercurial forward to his squad for next season.

Cardiff City and Turkish side Beşiktaş J.K. have also been rumoured destinations for Wallace, while Nottingham Forest saw their bid rejected by Millwall in the January transfer window.

However, the Reds can now offer Premier League football after beating Huddersfield Town in the Championship playoff final, and may attempt to bring Wallace to the City Ground on a free transfer this summer.

Top-flight football may prove the deciding factor in his immediate future, but many of Millwall’s Championship rivals will also be keen to acquire his services before the start of the season.

The Northern Echo claim that the League One outfit have made a formal loan offer for the midfielder, but that Magpies boss Eddie Howe is keen to give him a chance to feature for the first team in preseason.

He has also attracted interest from a number of the Lions’ Championship rivals such as West Brom, Reading and Stoke City.

Anderson, 19, spent the second half of last season on loan at League Two side Bristol Rovers, playing 21 games and scoring eight goals as The Gas secured an immediate return to the third tier on the final day of the campaign.
