The Labour councillor for St Giles has been deputy leader of the council and opposition leader but perhaps his two most lasting contributions to the borough are helping bring Tate Modern to Bankside, and selling off the Heygate Estate in Walworth as head of housing.

Social housing campaigners have long criticised Southwark Council for the way the Heygate, a massive brutalist estate to the south of Elephant and Castle, was demolished.

Southwark Labour sold the site to developers Lendlease for £50 million, which campaigners said was not much more than they spent on moving residents out. The council negotiated a deal to ensure 25 per cent of the homes on the site were “affordable”.

The deal was many years in the making and straddled Liberal Democrat/Conservative(2002-2010) and Labour administrations.

“It was, it is, and will be an issue of controversy. We could have done what the liberals did and let it remain vacant and used for Hollywood movies, whether sci-fi gangster movies, or actually start to provide housing...

“We live in the centre of probably the most cosmopolitan city in the world. People are coming and going all the time. As much as we want to keep things how they are, they’ve never been as they are. We live in a city that is constantly changing. You either adapt to those changes or you get left behind. We took the view that we didn’t want our residents to be left behind.

“There will always be disagreements. Some people disagree because they have a political motive. I’ve never been driven by ideology, I’m driven by wanting to help people.”

The Tate, which opened in 2000, was an earlier example of Southwark’s regeneration.

Cllr Wingfield said when he first came to the borough to campaign for the 1983 election, Surrey Docks area looked liked “the far side of the moon”.

“The whole place was flat... the old docks were gone, houses had been bombed. It had an air of depression. The economy wasn’t in a good state, attainment in schools wasn’t very good, social service provision was a bit patchy. I wanted to change the look and feel

of the borough. Not just me, others of my generation too.”

Cllr Wingfield, alongside other councillors and regeneration director Fred Manson, “came up with a plan to get a major arts provider south of the river” to help bring more investment to the borough.

He said: “It was more heightened, the difference north and south of the river, back then. Lots of arts organisations didn’t want to move.

“We had this empty power station -[Bankside Power Station]. To be involved in those discussions, part of the leadership of the council, is something I will look back on.

Without that, I don’t think Southwark would be half the place it is today.”

Cllr Wingfield will overtake the former Conservative councillor Toby Eckersley, who died in 2018.

Asked how long he would continue, he said: “I’m still fit and able, I’ve got no intention of stepping down or going anywhere. As long as my party still wants me to represent them and people still want me, I will stay on.”

In response to the question of whether he would consider putting himself forward as an MP for the Camberwell and Peckham constituency, where Harriet Harman is stepping down, Cllr Wingfield demurred.

“I’m quite happy where I am, I’ll leave that to others.”

Should Starmer resign, Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham is the bookies' favourite to replace him. But under the UK's electoral rules, only a standing MP can become Prime Minister, which Burnham currently is not.

With MP for Camberwell and Peckham, and Mother of the House, Harriet Harman standing down at the next election, a recent national newspaper article suggested she could resign early to make way for Burnham. As a safe Labour seat, the position is considered prime electoral real estate.

But it could prove a controversial move for Burnham, who said in an interview recently, that he'd "fallen out of love" with

Westminster because it "made a fraud out of people". Any move to a London constituency could be seen as a betrayal of his responsibilities to the north of England.

An anonymous Labour source told the News they felt it was unlikely that Starmer's office would engineer for Burnham to become MP for the South London constituency, as they would probably prefer to see Wes Streeting take over from Starmer.

Andy Burnham does have a connection to Southwark. After university, he worked as a researcher for the late Tessa Jowell, then Labour MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, who served in the Labour cabinet for eight years.

Andy Burnham and Harriet Harman have both been approached for comment.

NIGHTINGALE MUSEUM REOPENS It had been delayed by two years because of the pandemic

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A museum celebrating Florence Nightingale has opened for the first time in two years, after the Covid-19 pandemic - with exhibits including her stuffed pet owl.

The Florence Nightingale Museum on Lambeth Palace Road is opening with a special exhibition celebrating the 200th anniversary of her birth - delayed by two years because of the pandemic.

Among the other exhibits in the exhibition are the lamp Turkish lantern she carried during the Crimean War, the first nursing uniform she designed, and her medicine chest she took to the war.

The museum is also doing teaching sessions for school children with actor Laura Sharpe, who plays Nightingale herself.

“She’s always surprising, in what she stood for,” Laura said. “She fought for the very poor in society...

“She was very posh, very privileged - we have recordings of her. It’s not the standard RP [received pronunciation], it’s kind of more old-fashioned than that. She was from an incredibly wealthy background.

Laura’s act even extends to dressing up in nineteenth century outfit. “The costume gets quite warm, but we don’t have to wear a corset.”

Even though the museum was closed,

she had been doing workshops for schools before the official opening last week.

During the pandemic the workshops went online. “Florence lived on in Zoom,” Laura said. “The kids love her, they really like the old-fashioned Victorian approach.”

Fiona Hibberts, who runs the Nightingale Academy at nearby Guy’s and St Thomas’, which helps with training of nurses and midwives, and with research in the area, said: “We’re delighted they’re opening again... we have a special connection with her.

“She is one of the women who paved the way,” she said, pointing to the emphasis Nightingale put on data collection, using data to back up arguments, and ways of preventing evidence graphically, as well as her insistence on personal hygiene and handwashing.

Nightingale became the first female member the Statistical Society of London in 1858, two years after she came back from Crimea. Her entry certificate is in the exhibition, and says that “he is a fit person” - perhaps a reflection of attitudes to gender at the time.

The museum is open five days a week.

Former Walworth teacher is children’s nurse of the year

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A former teacher who makes activities for the children she looks after has been made nurse of the year at Evelina London.

Atinuke ‘Tinu’ Ademefun, a senior staff nurse at the children’s hospital in Waterloo, works with children who are on the waiting list for a new kidney. The children come in three or four times a week for dialysis to clean their blood, while they are waiting for a donor.

Sadly, children can be left waiting several years for a new kidney, although it can be a matter of months. But that means Tinu and her colleagues get a chance to get to

know the children.

A former primary teacher Tinu said: “I do lots of activities with the children, so we can get to know them.”

Some of the children have to have needles put in them for a special kind of treatment, which understandably makes them nervous.

Tinu added: “They can be very anxious to have two needles stuck in them for the duration of the treatment. I just like to find a way to relieve their anxiety. We do have a good rapport with the children.”

Tinu, who lives in the Elephant and Castle area, was born herself in Evelina London, and she also gave birth to her son, now 26, in the hospital.

After teaching at Surrey Square

primary school in Walworth, she retrained as a nurse, qualifying in 2007. She worked as a general paediatric nurse and in intensive care, before moving to Beach ward, where she is now.

Asked if she finds it difficult working with sick children, she said: “It’s not too hard... Some children are born with kidney issues, that’s the life they know, they acclimatise to it. It’s not as harrowing as one would expect. But it impacts on their families. It does have an impact on their education and family life, so we try to help there too.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS trust gives out the nursing and midwifery awards to recognise the hard work of its staff each year.

£20,000 Reward offered for information on shooting of sasha johnson that has left the mum-of-two barely able to talk or walk

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Crimestoppers are appealing for witnesses one year after a mumof-two was shot in the head, leaving her barely able to talk or move.

A year on from the shooting of Sasha Johnson, a black rights campaigner, in Peckham, Crimestoppers are offering a £20,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction.

The charity says that despite constant media appeals the high profile case is surrounded by a 'wall of silence'.

The police have said that many people including 'friends' of Sasha have failed to come forward with information, even though some were at the party where she was shot.

The 29-year-old mother-of-two was shot at a garden party in Consort Road, shortly before 3am on Sunday, May 23 2021.

She suffered such catastrophic head injuries that she now struggles to say more than a few words, and requires constant medical attention.

She has extremely limited movement and is often in pain. For her two young sons and family, watching her suffer is “daily heartbreak”.

The incident is so serious, and Sasha’s injuries so severe, that homicide detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command have taken on the hunt for the culprits.

A case against four men charged over the shooting was dropped in February.

Detective Chief Inspector Nigel Penney, who leads the investigation, said: “Look at the family photos of Sasha, you are looking at a young, healthy woman with children who are clearly devoted to her.

“Now look at those photos of Sasha in hospital and you see a woman who needs constant medical care and is so often in pain.

“Despite the most extensive police investigation, those who inflicted these grievous injuries remain free and unpunished and that is just not right.

“I am asking people to end this injustice and tell Crimestoppers what you know. The charity will keep you totally anonymous and pass on it on to us.

“Many people were at that party, including many friends of Sasha, but nearly everyone has been reluctant to come forward.

“I understand people may be scared, but people should search their conscience and do what is right for Sasha, her family and her sons.”

Crimestoppers is a charity that guarantees 100 per cent anonymity.

“We know that many people who were there on the night are her friends and supporters. And yet, there remains a wall of silence.

Case of a 15-year-old girl who was strip-searched at Walworth Police Station has been referred to an independent police review Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk The case of a fifteen-year-old girl who was strip-searched at Walworth Police Station will now be referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Police told the News that the child was strip-searched at the station on Manor Place, Walworth, on December 11, 2020.

This was just eight days after Child Q, also fifteen, was strip-searched at a Hackney school, on December 3 2020.

Following a complaint, the police referred the Walworth incident to the IOPC on Tuesday May 24 2022.

Police say they have received notification of a potential civil claim so cannot comment further on the specifics

of the case.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said: "This case will of

course be concerning to Londoners and that is why we have referred it to the IOPC for their independent oversight.

“We recognise the considerable impact strip searches can have on young people and the distress they can cause.

“We’re working hard to ensure we take a ‘safeguarding first’ approach.

This means we must always consider whether the child being searched could be a vulnerable victim of exploitation by others involved in gangs, County Lines and drug dealing or if they might be concealing weapons as they are at risk of self-harm.

“Strip search is an important tool for us but we must ensure children subject to intrusive searches are dealt with appropriately and respectfully and we follow all procedures correctly.”

In December 2020, a 15-year-old girl, now known as Child Q, was strip searched, while menstruating, by police at her East London school after teachers thought they could smell cannabis on

her.

In the Local Child Safeguarding Practice Review prepared by City & Hackney Safeguarding Children Partnership, the child's family say she was made to bend over, spread her legs, and use her hands to spread her buttocks while coughing.

In that same report, the family say that, since the search, which they say was racially motivated, she self-harms, is traumatised, and requires therapy.

Since the safeguarding review into the search involving Child Q, the police say they have ensured their officers and staff have a refreshed understanding of the policy for conducting a ‘further search’.

They have also given officers advice around dealing with schools, ensuring that children are treated as children and considering safeguarding for those under eighteen.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced a package of energy bill discounts, welcome news for Southwark households, fifteen per cent of which live in fuel poverty, according to one study.

On Thursday, May 26, Rishi Sunak announced that every UK household will get a £400 energy discount this autumn, with the poorest getting an additional £650.

There is no need to apply for either of the grants. From October, £400 will be automatically discounted from everyone’s energy bill.

The £650 payment, available to eight million households on Universal Credit, tax credits, pension credit and other means-tested benefits, will be paid automatically into people’s bank accounts.

Ross Diamond, CEO at Age UK Lewisham and Southwark, said: “The announcement is good news in the short-term but it probably doesn’t go far enough. I worry it will be back here next year - it really depends on the trajectory of the economy.

“Some of the older generation we support have been making the choice between eating and heating already and with utility bills and inflation going up, it’s going to be worse.

“People are actually having to wear warm clothes to stay warm inside which you wouldn’t hope to see in 21st century London.”

A £150 payment will also be made to people receiving benefits such as disability living allowance and personal independence payments, possibly on top of the £650 payment.

During a meeting at St Francesca Cabrini Primary School, Honor Oak, on May 16, a Local Education Authority (LEA) figure reportedly told parents that seventeen schools were “at risk” due to declining birth rates. The News has been asking the council to comment for two weeks, but the council has failed to address the rumours and refused requests for interview. Instead, the council has said: “Each school has different circumstances, and needs individual attention to work out how we can best support them.”

Parents at St Francesca Cabrini Primary School, Honor Oak, which could close due to plummeting admissions, have been “sent into panic mode” following the announcement. A parent at the school, who wished to remain anonymous said parents were told that: “In Southwark alone there are seventeen schools in critical conditions like St Francesca Cabrini and more are likely to close.”

With Southwark home to 74 primary most homes with at least one person of pension age, will get an additional £300 across November and December.

A Labour Party study found that fifteen per cent of Southwark homes lived in fuel poverty, defined as when ten per cent of a household's income goes on energy bills.

The News spoke to Denise Saunders, a 49-year-old disabled mum-of-three from Dulwich. She said: “I’m putting £20 a week on my electric whereas it was only £10 to £15 weeks every two weeks before.”

Rarely able to leave her flat because it isn’t disabled-adapted, it’s not just the winter she worries about. “I worry about the summer as well. These houses are concrete based and it’s really hot so you have to put fans on which is so expensive.”

Fatima Briscoe, a Walworth mum-offour is relying on food vouchers to feed her family because her Addison’s disease leaves her unable to work.

Over winter, her flat got so cold that her twelve-year-old son’s asthma flared up, hospitalising him.

“My flat takes a long time to warm up and, when my son is cold, I can only have it on for five minutes because I can’t afford to have it on for a long period of time”, she said.

Responding to the latest announcements, she said: “I can't work so any little help you can get is a relief.”

Parents have been left frustrated by what they say is a lack of consultation because it has made it difficult to plan for their children’s futures.

One parent, who has a child at St Francesca Cabrini said: “The pain is that us parents are now looking for schools in Southwark but we don’t know if they might close. The school must have had an inkling that numbers were falling and if they’d told us, parents could have done something about it but they told us absolutely nothing.”

According to an anonymous parent who attended the meeting, the LEA figure said birth rates weren’t expected to bounce back until 2034, with admission numbers not likely to recover until 2038.

‘fines’ under investigation at SURREY QUAYS CENTRE Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Anyone who thinks they have been wrongly fined for overstaying in the Surrey Quays shopping centre should appeal, with an investigation underway into a possible equipment fault.

It comes as several more people have told the News that they have been handed nonsensical fines for day-long stays in the car park, despite only living around the corner, after our initial report last month.

One of these people was Mary Weller, who works in a school. Ms Weller was recently handed a penalty charge notice of up to £100 for supposedly staying in the car park for more than nineteen hours one day in November - even though she lives just off Salter Road, a short drive away.

"At first I was a bit like 'oh my God'," she said. "If I'd been caught bang to rights I would have paid but I'm not going to."

Ms Weller appealed the fine to Group Nexus, who operate the shopping centre car park on behalf of owners British Land.

The stories raise the question of how many people are being fined incorrectly at Surrey Quays shopping centre. Nexus has launched an investigation into the issue, but it appears that the system may be recording two visits in a 24-hour period as a single, long stay, and fining people accordingly.

The apparent problem has been going back since at least 2019, when the News first reported on the issue. But posts on online forums suggest that people have been complaining about supposedly incorrect fines for several years before this.

A spokesperson for the shopping centre said: “We have raised this with the car park operator and have been assured that a thorough investigation is underway. They will, of course, reimburse anyone who has been wrongly fined, and we can only apologise on their behalf for this issue."

Group Nexus said: "We continuously monitor the performance of all our technology at every location and look to quickly resolve any issues. In this instance, after further investigation, the PCN in question was cancelled following a successful appeal by Mrs Weller earlier this month."

Two more people were treated at the scene of the collision, which took place at the corner of St James' Road shortly before 7am.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Police were called by the London Ambulance Service shortly before 07:00hrs on Monday, 30 May to reports of a collision involving a van and a lorry on Southwark Park Road, SE16.

"Officers attended. Two people were treated at the scene. A third was taken to hospital; their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

"The road was closed to traffic but has since reopened."

Outcry after Borough pub and cafe lose outside seating with no notice from council Exclusive

The King's Arms pub and Crol and Co. café both said their businesses are massively affected by the loss of outdoor seating on Newcomen Street, a relatively quiet residential road that goes off Borough High Street, leading towards the back of Guy's Hospital.

The outdoor seating licences for both businesses were due to run until September this year but a council officer came to both businesses on Thursday, May 19, to tell them to remove the tables and chairs immediately. The officer said it was dangerous for people to cross the narrow street to get to the seating area, as cyclists often pass through.

Veronica Cunningham, who owns the King's Arms, said she understood the logic of the decision, but that taking away her outdoor seating would have a huge impact on her business.

"You could see the difference at the weekend when it was sunny," she said.

"I've already lost some regulars."

Nico Renson runs Crol and Co next door. He said he had been planning to hire someone, now they were going to have let a member of staff go. "We don’t know where this is coming

from," he said. It came out of the blue for us."

Both Ms Cunningham and Mr Renson said that they were unaware of any complaints made to them about the outdoor seating. Ms Cunningham said she thought the outdoor seating had transformed the street, which she used to find intimidating at night.

Mr Renson added: "It was a welcoming sunny spot for people to enjoy , being so close to the hospital we had many patients treating themselves to a coffee and a drink before or after appointments. Both businesses have suffered obviously but we believe the real victim is the street."

Southwark's opposition Liberal Democrats also weighed in on the side of the two businesses.

Cllr Victor Chamberlain, leader of the Lib Dems in the borough, said: “Amid this cost-of-living crisis, and post covid, we should be supporting local independent businesses and jobs as best we can.

"Pubs like The Kings Arms and businesses on Newcomen Street are integral to not only Southwark’s economy, but also its community spirit. The council should be encouraging new ideas that add to the borough’s culture, especially if it can make al fresco dining permanent. ” Southwark Council did not respond to a request for comment.

The King's Arms also launched a petition to get the council to reverse the decision, which you can find by searching online.

The man was hit with three counts of knifepoint robbery, one count of possession of a knife and one count of drug possession with intent to supply, after being found with over 800 grams of cannabis - worth about £5,000 on the street. That came after a series of knifepoint robberies along the busy tourist area filled with bars and restaurants.

It comes as police continue to crack

down on robberies in Southwark and Lambeth as the weather improves and people start to congregate more outside, detective inspector Donnett Oseni told the News.

DI Oseni said that robberies in Southwark and Lambeth are down twenty per cent this week compared to the previous week. She put this down to extra foot patrols in the borough as part of a concerted police effort to control robberies.

Other incidents over the past week include two men being charged with conspiracy to rob after someone had an expensive watch stolen outside St Thomas' hospital near Waterloo.

Elsewhere, two youths were arrested on suspicion of carrying out a linked series of mobile phone robberies in a large area ranging from London Bridge to Clapham.

Officers recovered seven mobile phones, and five of them have been restored to their owners. The two teenagers have been bailed pending a charging decision.

Two men were also arrested on suspicion of carrying out a knifepoint robbery on Borough High Street in early March, DI Oseni added. Finally, a man has been charged with robbery after an incident on Kennington Road.

Police officers show ‘courage and initiative’ in tackling street crime

In one case, a man was been arrested and released under investigation after police found ten large bags of cannabis under the seat of a scooter he was driving.

Local police based at Gypsy Hill were called to Lordship Lane Estate, Dulwich, around 6pm on May 7, 2022.

Police said they found a 20-year-old, who was uninsured and banned from driving, acting suspiciously.

Through CCTV work, they established that he’d just been driving a scooter.

On searching the vehicle, they discovered cannabis stashed beneath the seat.

The man was released under investigation while police weighed and tested the cannabis.

In another incident, a man pleaded guilty to having an article with a blade or point in a public place, following a targeted local police operation that sought to tackle Camberwell residents'

concerns.

Lamar Whyte, 27, also pleaded guilty to possession of a quantity of cannabis, a controlled class B drug.

Local officers were called to Allendale Close, in Camberwell at around 3.30pm on Sunday, May 15.

Officers were alerted to the smell of cannabis coming from a car and found Whyte sitting in the passenger seat.

A search was conducted, and officers discovered a lock knife and "a quantity" of cannabis.

Whyte of Norwood Road, Croydon, was bail until Monday June 27, when he will re-appear at Croydon Magistrates' Court.

The adjournment is to allow a presentence report to be prepared.

Members of the community had previously raised concerns about drug dealing and the use of drugs in the area.

Inspector Tom Cornish said: “These two incidents underline the value of Neighbourhood police officers using their detailed local knowledge to target local priorities.

“In each case danger was posed to the public, either by carrying a knife in public or by driving while uninsured and disqualified by a court. The officers showed courage and initiative”.

Local police officers said: "On 21 May 2022 at 1730 hours a burglary was committed on the Canada Estate SE16. The suspect gained entry via the rear garden gate then smashed their way in via the back door."

Vicious bottle attack sees police release CCTV images

At Brixton Station, on the morning of Sunday April 24, police said the victim was repeatedly punched by three men, and even being bottled by one of them.

The victim had been talking to a friend inside the station when officer

Police have launched a fresh appeal for information on the murder of a 23-year-old man who was stabbed to death at his family restaurant, in front of diners and his mother.

Ian Gualavisi, (pictured) 23, was killed on Tuesday December 14, at around 7.45 pm, at Rincon Restaurant, Elephant and Castle.

Two men arrived on a moped, before barging into the restaurant and fatally wounding Ian. Police said the assailants then fled on the stolen moped through Burgess Park, which was later found burnt out in Picton Street on the Elmington Estate, around 1.5 miles away from the scene of the crime.

DCI Chris Wood said: “The

restaurant was popular with the Latin American community. I am sure there are people within this community who have vital information about Ian’s murder. No matter how insignificant it may seem, please tell me what you know.”

Two men, both aged 24, arrested on 15 and 16 December 2021 on suspicion of murder, have been released under investigation.

Four men aged between 16 and 21, were arrested on 25 and 26 May 2022. They have been bailed to return pending further enquiries.

In March, BBC Crimewatch shared chilling footage of the attack in a bid to track down Ian's killers but questions remain unanswered.

New Elizabeth Line splits opinion across Dulwich and Herne Hill

It includes Farringdon, which is a 16-minute Thameslink journey from Herne Hill

Dulwich and Herne Hill residents are divided on whether the newly reopened Elizabeth Line will improve their local areas.

The Elizabeth Line, which opened on Tuesday May 24, includes Farringdon, which is a sixteen-minute Thameslink journey from Herne Hill Station.

Those arriving into Farringdon will now have swift access to transport hubs such as Paddington, Liverpool Street and Stratford.

But while some say it’s a needed boost in transport links, others remain unconvinced.

Sue Badman, Vice Chair of the Dulwich Society, travelled from Farringdon, to Abbey Wood and back to Canary Wharf. She said: “It is a boon for Dulwich & Herne Hill residents. It was a fantastic experience - the train arrived quickly and the service was smooth and quiet.

“Many passengers were excited to be on the new service while others looked as though they had been travelling on the Elizabeth Line all their lives.

“The fast access to E-Line will open up Dulwich, Herne Hill and other parts of London to faster access to tube services.

“We will have to see how the fully integrated service works… but, overall, the launch was a triumph”.

Journey times from Herne Hill to Liverpool Street have been slashed to 27 minutes, while a cross-capital jaunt to Stratford will only take 42 minutes.

But Richard Aldwinckle, member of the Dulwich Alliance and One Dulwich, coalitions of local groups and traders said: “I can’t see it has much relevance to Dulwich and I don’t think it will have any impact on business round here.”

Twitter User @FrancescaHumi said: “Why does Reading get Transport for London/tube services but SE London (New Cross, Lewisham, Peckham, Dulwich) gets none?”

There have also been hiccups, with the BBC reporting that some travelers at Farringdon have been getting overcharged when changing without tapping in.

TFL said they were working on an “urgent solution” to remedy the problem.

Dulwich is particularly under-served

by TFL services. Dulwich Village has a Public Transport Accessibility Level of just two, while East Dulwich’s languishes at three, some of the worst in Southwark.

63% of people in Dulwich own at least one car or van, compared to just 42% in Southwark generally, which it has been argued is caused by poor public transport provisions.

Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “Green public transport is the future and the opening of the Elizabeth line is a landmark moment for our capital and our whole country.”

Transport secretary Grant Shapps said this week that the government would prioritise cargo trains moving around vital goods like food and energy sources in the event of a strike.

The railway industry is under pressure, with more people working from home.

Unions are concerned this could mean job losses and reduced timetables.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “Today’s overwhelming endorsement by railway workers is a vindication of the union’s approach and sends a clear message that members want a decent pay rise, job security and no compulsory redundancies.

“Our NEC will now meet to discuss a timetable for strike action from midJune, but we sincerely hope ministers will encourage the employers to return to the negotiating table and hammer out a reasonable settlement with the RMT.” A spokesperson for the government said: “It is hugely disappointing and premature that the RMT is calling for industrial action before even entering discussions.”

Transport for London set to make a minimum of £400,000 from mask fines

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Nearly 4,000 people were fined as much as £200 each for not wearing face coverings on London transport when they were mandatory, new data shows.

Passengers had to wear face masks for the first half of last year and over much of the last winter, with the rules changing as Covid rates waxed and waned.

Some 3,996 people were order to pay a £200 fixed penalty notice between February 24, 2021 and January 27, 2022,

according to Sadiq Khan. The fines were cut to £100 if paid within two weeks. That means Transport for London (TfL) will make a minimum of 400,000 from the fines, and a maximum of nearly £800,000.

TfL staff stopped 7,283 people from getting on services for not wearing a face covering, and kicked 2,325 people off the network in that time.

Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “The safety of Transport for London’s (TfL’s) customers and staff is always its top priority. A range of measures helped to ensure customers can travel safely and confidently on TfL’s services during the pandemic, including

requiring face coverings as a condition of carriage both before and after they were a legal requirement, and continuing to strongly encourage them today. “ The data, released by the mayor in response to a question to Khan from Labour London Assembly member Krupesh Hirani, is a snapshot of the relatively high level of compliance with mask rules - or at least TfL’s ability to enforce them. Not everyone who was caught out has paid their fine. Khan’s data shows that TfL is chasing payment on 710 of the 3,996 fixed penalty notices - at a total value of £142,000.

Trains going through much of Southwark and south London are to be disrupted after workers for Southeastern voted to strike.

Southeastern, which was among thirteen railway companies whose workers chose industrial action over pay, jobs and safety concerns, runs trains through south-east London, including London Bridge, Blackfriars, Elephant and Castle, Peckham, Denmark Hill and Nunhead.

Staff at Network Rail, the public body that owns the railways themselves, also voted to strike. Network Rail wants to cut 2,500 jobs in maintenance to make £2 billion in savings, although it said this would not compromise safety.

The timetable for the strike is unclear.

RMT, the union which organised the industrial action, said it would finalise timings in mid-June. Any strike could mean massively reduced services and make it harder for people to get around.

London Bridge Terror Attack: Service to be held this Friday

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk This Friday, June 3, marks the fifth anniversary of the London Bridge terror attacks in 2017.

Eight people were killed and 48 people were injured when Islamist terrorists drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and then into Borough market. The attackers stabbed people in the pubs and restaurants around the area.

Civilians, including Millwall fan Roy Larner and Spanish banker Ignacio Echeverría, helped police fight off the terrorists. Mr Echeverría was killed and Mr Larner was seriously injured by the attackers. The terrorists were all shot dead by police.

Southwark Cathedral is holding a remembrance service on Friday. at 2.30pm. A memorial will be unveiled on Cathedral Square at the end of the service. Father Christopher of the Church of the Most Precious Blood on nearby O’Meara Street will also hold a service at Crossbones Graveyard.

Roy five years on from terror attack Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Millwall fan who was stabbed eight times after confronting knifewielding jihadis in the London Bridge terrorist attack five years ago has said he is coming to terms with not getting an award.

'Lion of London Bridge' Roy Larner spent two weeks in hospital after the brutal attack on the evening of June 3, 2017, but was not given an award for his bravery, despite various petitions supporting him gaining tens of thousands of signatures.

Two racist incidents - one before and one after the attack - are likely to have been a factor that prevented him getting an award, despite other people who confronted the terrorists on the night getting medals.

Speaking to the News on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the attack, Roy said: "I’m not really into awards - I’ve had 'thank yous', that means a lot more to me than any medal."

He added that he felt remorse for the racist incidents, which were "wrong". He was given a suspended jail sentence and fined at the time. But he still feels that he has been "airbrushed" out of the history of the attacks. "Two police officers got medals, just for keeping them at bay. I was the one getting stabbed to pieces...

Mostly, I just think I'm lucky to have got out of there alive," he said. "I’ve got a good

hiding, I’m lucky to be alive." He said he was also grateful to the two police officers who found him on the street and took him to hospital.

Roy still suffers flashbacks to the attack, and said "silly little things" like "preferring an empty bus to a full one" continue to bother him. "I have my ups and downs obviously, and I'm having counselling." He is not really in touch with other London Bridge survivors, but has spoken to someone who was on Westminster Bridge during the terror attack in April 2017.

Physically, Roy is mostly fine although his arms are weak from tendons damaged

in the attack, when he was stabbed in his arms, hands and neck as well as suffering a punctured lung. Luckily the attackers mostly missed his major organs.

He recently saw CCTV footage of the attacks for the first time, which he said gave him some sense of closure. "It weren't nice seeing it, but it helped." He said he remembers getting stabbed the first two times, although he does not remember most of what happened that night.

Roy added that he never remembered his famous line 'F*ck you, I'm Millwall' until he heard an audio recording of the attacks, which confirmed to him that he

did say it.

He now has a council flat in Nunhead and said he tries to keep busy, although he is taking his recovery slowly and is not back at work yet. Millwall give him a free season ticket each year.

Asked if with the benefit of hindsight, he would still go to the Borough High Street restaurant where the attack happened, he said: "Yes. I would have to say yes all the time...

"You're not sure what you're thinking in those moments, but that twenty seconds has probably given some people a bit of time to escape."

SOUTHWARK K-POP FESTIVAL APPROVED DESPITE COMPLAINTS Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A controversial K-pop festival is going ahead in Southwark Park this summer, the organisers have announced.

MIK, which will see part of the Bermondsey park shut off for two weeks in late July and early August, is going ahead on the weekend of July 30-31.

Festival organisers Magic Sound were originally given permission last year, before changes to the Covid rules meant it had to be called off.

Local councillors, the Southwark Park Association 1869, and the park's cricket club had all called on the council not to give permission for the festival.

The festival will run for two days from 12pm to 10.15pm, with a capacity of 15,000 people. Organisers have also got a license to sell alcohol on site until 9.30pm both nights - despite an initial consultation document on the council's website saying there would be no alcohol sold at the event. The council said there will be no alcohol allowed on the site.

MIK is set to be the first open-air K-pop festival in Europe. Organisers want to make the event an annual occurrence.

The festival would take place on the cricket pitch in the southern part of the park, bounded by the cafe and gallery to the north, and the athletics track to the south.

Building this year would start on the morning of July 20 and the dismantling process would finish in the evening of August 5 – meaning disruption to the usual functioning of the park over

A spokesperson for the Southwark Park association 1869 said: "We are disappointed but sadly not surprised at the decision to go ahead with MIK K-POP. This deal was done long ago for purely monetary reasons. "Tell that to the public whose normal access to the park will be disrupted and reduced during the heart of the

summer holidays! Seriously, where are the benefits for local people? The Council have noted people's objections but ignored them. All this in the year that the funds for the popular, longstanding Bermondsey Carnival have been slashed."

Rachel Bentley, a local resident and councillor for North Bermondsey ward, said: “We are opposed in principle to the use of public parks for commercial profit and are disappointed that the council has failed to listen to concerns of local residents. We ask that a portion of the

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Friends of Peckham Rye Park (FoPRP), a group of volunteers who work to preserve Peckham Rye's park and common, are concerned that a festival on the grounds will cause noise disturbance and damage the turf.

Dance music festival Gala Festival will be held over the Jubilee weekend from Thursday June 2 to Saturday June 4, and feature world renowned DJs such as Gilles Peterson.

An FoPRP spokesperson said: “For people living on Colyton Road and further down Peckham Rye it’s really bad. Last time, you could hear music from Telegraph Hill and beyond.”

The FoPRP spokesperson also said areas of the park damaged by heavy vehicles during last year’s festival still haven’t recovered.

In their sustainability report, Gala Festival says its 2022 site plan includes more trackways to mitigate ground damage.

This year, visitors will listen to techno icons such as Gerd Hanson and DJ Harvey, as well as up-and-comers like Nia Archives, who has won plaudits for her melodic DIY drum and bass tracks.

Tickets can cost up to £77 but 1,500 tickets were offered to Peckham locals at the discounted price of £20.

Gala Festival have published a sustainability report, carried out by TOGETHERZERO, an initiative that helps music events be sustainable and socially inclusive.

TOGETHERZERO also developed Gala’s 2021 sustainability strategy, the same one they reviewed, but the report says the data featured was verified by a third party.

The report found their emissions were 75 per cent better than the industry benchmark, and that their fuel consumption has a B energy rating, 81 per cent better than the industry benchmark.

However, it also said their water usage was “significantly below the industry benchmark” and their waste management strategy meant nonrecyclables got mixed with recyclables.

Gala Festival was approached for comment.

Man who ruthlessly stabbed a teenage boy in the street with no clear motive is convicted of murder

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A man who ran out of a Vauxhall flat to fatally stab a teenager, twenty years his junior, for no obvious reason, has been convicted of murder.

Sadikee Williams, 37, from Stockwell, murdered Keane Flynn-Harling, 16, shortly before midnight on Monday July 5 last year.

Williams was found guilty of his murder last Friday May 27, after a trial at Isleworth Crown Court. Sentencing will take place at the same court on June 8.

That night, Keane and his friends walked past Williams who was with two other males on the first floor flat of Sturminster House, Kibworth Street, Vauxhall.

A short exchange followed, before Williams ran out of of the flat and stabbed Keane in the neck and face.

Keane ran a short distance before collapsing. His friends were chased by the other two males but escaped.

Police officers and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene but tragically, Keane was pronounced dead 45 minutes after the incident. He had died from the deep stab wound to his neck. Police said he also received a significant stab wound to his face.

In the interview with police, Williams replied no comment to all questions and, to this day, his motive remains unclear.

Williams was arrested a week after

the killing, when officers identified him because he was wearing the same distinctive jacket he had on the night of the murder.

Officers searching Sturminster House found the jacket and, using mobile phone cell site data, placed Williams in the vicinity of the address at the time of the murder.

Williams stopped saying no comment when he was shown CCTV from the day of the murder which showed him wearing the jacket and he admitted it was him in the footage.

On July 14 he was charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

At the trial, he admitted being at the flat, but denied leaving the property to carry out the attack.

Detective Inspector Adam Guttridge, Specialist Crime South, said: “Williams is a dangerous individual who did not hesitate in killing a teenage boy in cold blood.

"Whilst his reasons for carrying out the murder remain unknown, what we do know is that the moment he saw Keane and his friends that evening he was intent on causing serious harm and had no regard for the consequences or devastation he would cause.

"Keane’s family have had to suffer this unbearable loss because of his actions.

“While Williams made efforts to hide his tracks, it was thanks to the efforts of the officers in their meticulous work around CCTV and mobile phone analysis, as well as the testimonies of a number

of key witnesses that we were able to present such a strong case and secure this prosecution.”

Keane's devastated family spoke after the trial of a young man that enjoy nothing more than riding around on his bike and kicking a ball about, they said: “Keane was a beautiful, kind, caring and loving son. A wonderful young man who would always light up a room. He had a huge smile and an even bigger heart. His family meant everything to him. He was a doting older brother and cousin who enjoyed riding bikes and playing football with his friends.

"Keane’s presence will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, especially his mother, father, brothers and sister.”

Kennington teenager jailed for stabbing man to death on busy road while filming music video

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A teenager from Kennington has been jailed for life after he stabbed another young man to death while he was filming a music video.

Brandon McNeil, 19, will serve a minimum of 24 years for murdering Shane Jerome, 23. He was sentenced at the Old Bailey last Friday, May 27.

McNeil pleaded guilty to murder at the same court in March as well as attempting to cause grievously bodily harm with intent to another man and possession of a bladed article.

The court heard that the killer stabbed Mr Jerome to death on July 21 last year, while the victim was filming a music video in Brixton on his motorbike. Mr Jerome was in demand for these videos because he owned a distinctive Yamaha MT07 motorbike.

Mr Jerome was to drive around Brixton market on his motorbike alongside other flashy vehicles, including two Lamborghinis, while the artists performed for the camera.

The convoy reached some traffic lights on Brixton Road when McNeil, who police said is linked to a gang that is active in Brixton, ran up and attacked Mr Jerome, alongside four other men.

Mr Jerome tried to get away from the rambo knife-wielding McNeil, but was unable to get away because he was stuck between the Lamborghinis and a bus. He tried to push McNeil away but

was unable.

McNeil then went for one of Mr Jerome's friends and, crucially for the police investigation, put his hand on one of the Lamborghinis, leaving a print. The man was able to get away.

All the while, McNeil's friends were throwing things at the other people filming the video.

Mr Jerome managed to run to a private medical vehicle, where the driver called emergency services. Sadly Mr Jerome died later that evening.

McNeil was caught when police found the handprint on the car, as well as phone data placing him in the area at the time of the murder.

In a statement, Shane's family said: "Shane was our only beloved son, brother, uncle and boyfriend. He meant the world to us and he played a massive part in our lives. Shane was a hardworking young man who had his whole life ahead of him, ambitions to fulfil and many more memories to make. He was always progressing in life, he started off in the building trade at the age of 16 when he left school and then progressed on to being a scaffolder, which was his passion...

Family of four win legal battle against Southwark Council over overcrowding Many London councils use ‘gatekeeping’ tactics to deter low-income and homeless households from accessing support to which they are legally entitled

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A family who were told by Southwark Council that their statutory overcrowded living situation was a “deliberate act” have won their court battle against the council, Tuesday May 24.

Milton Laines Roman moved to the UK in 2016 and brought his family over shortly after. For five years, Southwark objected to putting his wife and two children on a priority housing list, even though they shared a small Walworth studio flat.

But the High Court has ruled against the council, saying that an applicant for council housing cannot have caused their own statutory overcrowding by a ‘deliberate act’ if they lack the funds to afford more suitable housing.

Following his victory, Milton said: “Southwark have constantly disbelieved me and my wife and tried to make us feel as though we were in the wrong.

“We feel so relieved that the judge has understood the situation we were in and has agreed that the council has broken the law in denying us housing.

“I hope that this can bring an end to the overcrowding we have faced for over five years.”

Southwark Council said after the ruling that they were 'wrong to assess the family as deliberately overcrowding themselves' and told the News they would work with the family 'to ensure their housing needs will be met'.

In July 2021, the council hit Milton's family with a decision letter rejecting their plea for priority housing.

An official from the council’s Housing Solutions Department said Milton’s family should have found suitable housing “before paying for their airfares”.

But advocacy group Housing Action

Southwark and Lambeth (HASL) took on the family’s case, having successfully backed council residents in similar situations.

In December 2020, they supported Peckham couple Flavio Flores, 46 and Elba Velasquez in their triumph over Southwark Council, who again said their overcrowding was “a deliberate act”.

Following Milton’s win, Sam Tippet from the Public Interest Law Centre said: “We are delighted that the High Court has vindicated our client in his long battle for housing justice.

“Many London councils use ‘gatekeeping’ tactics to deter low-income and homeless households from accessing support to which they are legally entitled.

“There is an established culture of disbelief in housing offices, with families

routinely being accused of fraud or of causing their own housing problems.

Such issues disproportionately affect migrant communities and communities of colour.

“In this case, the message from the council has been loud and clear: if you are a working-class migrant family, don’t move into Southwark.”

Cllr Victor Chamberlain, Southwark Liberal Democrat Group Leader said: "This council should be getting on with building social housing and do what it can to stem the huge increase in empty council homes happening under its watch.

“This behaviour toward residents living in unfortunate conditions is, sadly, to be expected from a Labour party who stopped caring what anyone else thinks.”

Councillor Darren Merrill, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “The judge ruled that the council was wrong to assess the family as deliberately overcrowding themselves.

We respect the decision of the court and we are carefully reviewing the judgement.

"We should not have described them as deliberately overcrowded, and we are sorry we got this wrong. We’re continuing to work with the family to provide them with support, to ensure their housing needs will be met.”

New allotments provide a green oasis on Peckham housing estate Thanks to a £20k council grant Exclusive

The allotments, behind Marchwood Close, Southampton Way, and used by 30 people, have been built with £20,000 from Southwark Council’s ‘Cleaner, Greener, Safer Scheme’.

Since 2003, the scheme has given monetary grants to local resident groups across Southwark that go towards making permanent improvements to their local areas.

Mum-of-three Fadime Pala, 34, said: “It’s such a gift for us. It’s good for my mental health and I can see the benefit in my kids as well. It’s a place to escape from the business of your routine. It feels like you're somewhere completely different”.

used to be an anonymous patch of grass only used by dog walkers. "You couldn't even have a picnic on it because you'd be worried about putting your hand in something horrible", he said.

Danielle Valens, who has lived on the estate for five years, said “It’s brilliant.

Normally to get a space in an allotment you have to wait for years and it’s really expensive. This is such a nice thing to have on your doorstep.”

To get a plot, residents have to show commitment to the cause by attending meetings and helping with the allotments’ upkeep.

Gardeners each build their own plot with freely provided materials which is why, as Nick explains, “they are all different shapes and sizes”.

Local scaffolding firm BCM Scaffolding Services have been providing heaps of free wooden building material for residents who grow cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, sweetcorn, carrots, chards and more.

TRA chair Nick had to install a gate with a code after a spate of aubergine robberies but says he tries to keep the garden “as open as possible”.

Southwark started most new council homes

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council started work on more social rent homes backed by Sadiq Khan than any other borough last year.

The council started 878 new homes in 2021/2022 that were funded by the mayor's council housebuilding programme, way ahead of the east London trio of Havering, Barking and Dagenham, and Newham, which started 593, 424 and 410 new homes respectively.

Khan's £4 billion pot of money is allocated to councils via a bidding process, with each council putting together a proposal. The News has asked for more detail on what proportion of Southwark's new homes this represents. The council has started 2,500 new homes over the past four years.

Kieron Williams, Southwark Council leader, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Southwark and the Mayor of London, and is the result of our

hard work and our joint ambition to tackle the housing crisis facing our city. Every one of these 878 homes will transform the lives of local families for the better for decades to come."

Some 4,946 new social rent homes across London funded by the mayor's council housebuilding programme started on site last year.

Khan has been an outspoken defender of Southwark's sometimes controversial 'infilling' housebuilding policy. The mayor told the News last year that he would "rather live in Southwark than in Wandsworth" - the borough where he actually lives.

“I think Southwark residents should be incredibly proud they’ve got a council who are meeting the needs of Southwark residents. The housing Southwark builds is only for Southwark residents – no other residents are eligible for the council homes Southwark builds. Southwark is making tough choices, which is to build council homes at a time when other councils aren’t.

At her wits’ end: leaks leave Camberwell woman in damp, mouldy flat for months

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A Camberwell woman has lived in a damp, mouldy flat with broken lighting for months, due to an upstairs leak, despite repeatedly asking the council to fix it.

Eleanor Mackenzie-Smith, a 26-yearold leaseholder at Hood House, Elmington Estate, Camberwell, hasn't had overhead lighting for months because the damp build-up has blown her electrics.

She first reported the problem in January, but despite constantly emailing the council, nothing has changed.

Five flats are affected, including one belonging to a disabled 80-year-old woman, whose damp walls have made her bathroom handrail fall off.

Eleanor said: “I don’t know what’s going on. I’m at my wit’s end. It’s really depressing and I get so frustrated.

“I had my mother-in-law to stay for a couple of nights and I couldn’t even turn on the light for her while she used the toilet.”

Eleanor says the damp has been

a problem ever since she moved in over a year ago but that things rapidly deteriorated at the end of last year.

She says she has called the 'Leak from Above' hotline countless times, but it has never been answered.

One December morning, dripping from above caused a huge puddle in the middle of the room, forcing her to pay for an emergency plumber out of her own pocket.

But the leak has continued, causing mould to accumulate in her bathroom and corridors, which Eleanor feels is damaging her health.

Downstairs 80-year-old Val’s disability rail has fallen off but she says the council are trying their best: “I give credit to Sharon Kennedy and Kieron Williams - they listen to you.”

Val says the contractors weren’t communicating with each other, leading to confusion over the cause of the leak.

The council has since sent Eleanor a bouquet of flowers to apologise, but she says the council have still not told her when it will be fixed.

The News has approached the council for comment.

Southwark is making tough choices, which is to build council homes at a time when other councils aren’t.

Disgusted resident: ‘I have rats as big as cats under my floorboards’

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham family has been living with rats living under the floorboards of their council flat for eighteen months.

Disabled couple Christine and Victor Gage have been complaining of rats scratching at the floor of their young adult daughter Lisa’s bedroom since late 2020.

The smell of the rats and the sound of their scratching got so bad recently that Lisa had to sleep in the front room of the ground floor flat for three months. Her ex-boyfriend even refused to sleep in the room because the sound and smell were so unpleasant, Lisa said. “He said ‘what’s that noise? I’m sorry, I’ve got to go home’ and just left.”

Southwark Council have sent pest control workers to the flat in Sidmouth House on Commercial Way several times, but they have been unable to get rid of the problem despite putting poison down.

Council workers looked down a drain with a special camera, apparently telling Christine and Victor that the rats were “as

big as cats”.

“We shouldn’t have to live like this,” said Christine, who has recently had a stroke and has a kind of blood poisoning that affects her legs. Victor, who has been hospitalised twice recently with heart attacks and walks on crutches, asked, gesturing at Lisa: “Why should she have to live in a bedroom what’s got rats underneath?”

Sadly, rats aren’t the only problem the family have had with their flat, which they moved into in November 2019. They also suffered a leak from above in Christine and Victor’s bedroom. The leak has now been fixed. Other problems have included issues with the bathroom and flooring in the flat.

Cllr Darren Merrill, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “We apologise for the delayed works to address this rat infestation. We have booked a visit for next week, when we will do our best to resolve the matter.

“We replaced a broken kitchen waste pipe in the property above some weeks ago. The leak has since stopped and we have arranged an inspection of the ceiling next week.”

Comment New Lib Dem leader: ‘Local democracy and how I will hold the ruling Labour administration to account in Southwark’

I

am honoured to write my first ‘Southwark News’ column as the new Liberal Democrat Leader of the Opposition on Southwark Council.

‘Southwark News’ plays a hugely important part in our borough’s life – as one of the best regarded independent local newspapers in the country.

Local democracy is much improved when there is a strong, fearless and responsible local press.

Since our present borough was created in 1965 only two parties have been the largest parties in Southwark – Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

Since 2018, the only parties with candidates elected here have been Labour and Liberal Democrats.

Yet again, there are no elected Conservatives or Greens here, and, so, after this year’s elections it is again only Liberal Democrats who have been elected to hold our Labour-run council to account.

First, my thanks go to all who voted Liberal Democrat in the council elections, to all our 63 candidates who stood for us in every part of the

borough, to our helpers and supporters, and to my friends and colleagues Hamish McCallum, Nick Johnson and Anood Al-Samerai who were the leaders of the opposition before me.

Special thanks to Eliza Mann, Adele Morris, David Noakes, Dan Whitehead and Humaira Ali who stood down this year and to William Houngbo and Damian O’Brien who sadly were not re-elected.

I’d like to publically also thank Richard Wingfield and Raghav Parkash who regained second place for the Liberal Democrats in Dulwich Village and Patrickson Obanya, Alice Thomas, and Michael Tipler who ran a very strong local campaign in South Bermondsey.

When we need to challenge our Labour-run Southwark Council, the Labour Mayor of London, or Boris Johnson and his regularly dreadful Conservative government, we will.

And our main campaigns will be: 1. to make this a cleaner, greener and safer borough; 2. to make sure public money is spent on our public’s priorities and that councillors take account of the public’s views, 3. addressing the cost of living crisis in our borough and

helping people feeling the pinch and 4. to make sure that in the future, unlike the past few years, Southwark does not just talk about great housebuilding targets, but builds the housing we need and ends the scandal of so many empty properties in our borough.

After 12 years, and counting, of Labour government in Southwark, with a golden goodbye last year to a Labour councillor forced to resign his cabinet post and more recently one of our Labour MPs suspended, we will demand better – and we will hold Southwark’s Labour leader, cabinet members and councillors to account.

After all, they will pay themselves nearly £1 million out of public money this year.

And last month they voted again for the person who will lead the scrutiny of the council to be – yes you might have guessed it – another Labour councillor!

Of course, we will work cross party where it is in the public interest we do so and we will on a regular basis put forward and engage you, the public, with constructive new ideas like: planting more trees (not chopping them down), tackling our air pollution and litter scandal, making 50% of all housing development affordable and abolishing charges for bulky waste disposal.

In all we do, our love for this borough will drive our commitment and work throughout this new four-year term.

y mid-May temperatures began to rise bringing warmer days (although nights remained cool). And after weeks of dry conditions there was some welcome rainfall. June is the first of the summer months although it can often be unsettled with heavy showers and high humidity.

Refresh window boxes for early summer; a combination of shrubs and tender perennials such as dwarf Lavenders and scented Geraniums make a perfumed and attractive display.

Plants in containers and window boxes need to be fed regularly during the growing season and especially whilst in flower. Nutrients become quickly depleted, also chemicals from tap water build up and change the soil environment. The work schedule in the garden is not only dictated by the seasons but also weather conditions. Spring was very dry with no significant rainfall, the soil remains dry even after some spells of rain; and so, the main task will be regular watering (especially for containers) to ensure plants do not die-back as they come into full growth.

Remove weeds around plants and add compost (or a mulch) to provide nutrients and help preserve moisture.

Herbs such as Parsley and Thyme can be grown with Calendula (Pot marigold) and Cosmos in borders - and makes an attractive display. Scented stocks can be used to fill gaps in planting.

It is not too late to sow wild flower seeds (or a mix) in a small area of the garden (or in containers) to encourage butterflies, bees and hover flies. If not done by early June wait until September to sow the seeds - and they will come up the following spring.

Annual Corn poppy - striking red delicate papery flowers, makes a stunning impact grown in clumps (seeds freely).

Evening Primrose, a biennial has pale yellow delicately perfumed flowers that open in the evening, the flowers last only a day but they are prolific.

Self-seeds, and suitable for the flower borders The annual Cornflower (C. cyanus) has deep blue flowers and light green foliage. Self-seeding and usually comes back each year.

The council’s failure to clarify whether seventeen schools are at risk is unfair to worrying parents

This week, we reported that seventeen schools could close after a parent at St Francesca Cabrini Primary School, itself at risk of closure, was reportedly told so at a school meeting.

The News contacted the council on multiple occasions over a two week period, asking for clarification as to whether the speculation was true.

Instead, repeatedly we have been given the same insipid statement about “each school having different circumstances”, dodging the question completely.

Parents are understandably panicked by these rumours, and a simple explanation would go a long way towards easing fears.

If declining birth rates are to blame for falling admissions, the council isn’t at fault for that.

But regardless of the challenges the council might face, through no fault of its own, it has a responsibility to communicate with parents, and even with this paper - asking on their behalf.

We believe that communities of engaged and energised parents will always be vital to the success of Southwark’s schools. The council must stop leaving them in the dark over this.

Park event money should benefit local concerns

llr Ian Wingfield, profiled this week as he becomes Southwark’s longest-ever serving councillor, said in relation to the redevelopment of the Heygate Estate that it was important for the borough to move with the times. Clearly, some people feel that locals were left behind by this change.

It’s similar with the MIK K-pop festival in Southwark Park - we don’t want to stop any change from happening here; it’s vital that Bermondsey, and Southwark more broadly, keep developing, but in a way that reflects the wishes of the people who live here.

The carnival, which previously received as much as £80,000 from the council, has got a £10,000 fund this year. The rest of the money will go towards events across Southwark.

This isn’t good enough - if the people of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe are going to lose part of their park for two weeks this summer, their carnival should get more in return.

Borough Market to host platinum jubilee street party

Visitors to the market on today,Thursday June 2, can expect to kick off their royal bank holiday with celebratory jubilee dishes, vintage music and a best-dressed stall competition.

Jane Swift, interim CEO at Borough Market said: “Borough Market has long been a place for London locals and visitors alike to come together over a love of great food and we’re looking forward to creating a fun and vibrant family friendly atmosphere to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee while championing the wonderful food on offer from our traders – whether the best of British or unique international produce.”

The market’s newspaper will also feature seven recipes, created exclusively for Borough Market, by food historian Angela Clutton, with each dish inspired

by a different decade of the Queen’s reign.

Party-goers can also buy a Jubileethemed hamper, and see who wins the coveted ‘best-decorated stall’ competition.

As a charitable trust, Borough Market has organised a community lunch that will be attended by representatives from 80 charity partners and local community groups.

Jane Swift said: “It’s important that we mark such a wonderful national milestone as a community - and what better way to celebrate than by bringing people together over a celebratory lunch?”

Local schools will be attending, as well as churchgoers from Southwark Cathedral, volunteers from United Saint Saviours, and zero food waste pioneers Plan Zheroes, making it a truly intergenerational event.

Those who come along will be following in the footsteps of the royals themselves, as Prince Harry, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have all previously graced the market.

Bankside will have it all this jubilee friday

Charity Bankside Open Spaces Trust is putting on the music, dance and family activity event across three main areas around Union Street in Borough Flat Iron Square, Red Cross Garden and

Marlborough Sports Garden.

Highlights include 2018 Britain's Got Talent finalists D-Day Darlings, performing wartime singalongs, Swing Patrol, who will be putting on dance classes, a dog show judged by BBC Radio London’s dog expert Anna Webb, and dance company Taboo.

Local band Soft Shell Crabs will also be performing a song saying goodbye to two former Lib Dem councillors for the Borough and Bankside ward, Adele Morris and David Noakes.

The day will begin with a service of remembrance at Crossbones Graveyard, led by Father Christopher

of the Church of the Most Precious Blood, for the victims of the London Bridge terror attack, which took place five years ago.

Flat Iron Square will host the main stage. Red Cross Garden will be a more relaxed environment with arts and crafts, as well as the dog show, and live acoustic music. Marlborough Sports Garden will also have live music and dance acts, as well as sports and dance workshops.

In between, Union Street and Redcross Way will be full of stalls with street food and drink, as well as two other music stages.

Burgess Park to host history trail Camberwell to host drag acts later in the month in honour of the queen

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Longfield Hall are putting on an LGBTQ cabaret event to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee, thanks to funding from Arts Council England (ACE).

‘Love is Live - the Platinum Edition’ will show at Longfield Hall, Knatchbull Road, Camberwell, at 7pm, Tuesday 24 June, thanks to £7,100 of funding courtesy of the ‘Let’s Create Jubilee Fund’.

Members of the LGBTQ community aged 21 and over will also be invited to cabaret workshops throughout May and into June, where they can develop their performance skills.

Laura Harling, artistic director at Longfield Hall said: “We are so excited to be able to deliver our 'Love is Live' project.

“The funding from ACE will enable our local community to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s jubilee whilst

also offering our South London LGBT+ community an opportunity to develop new skills in performance and to celebrate together at our Love is Live Platinum Edition cabaret on 24 June.

“We have a world class line up of cabaret artists and facilitators ready to deliver exceptional workshops, culminating in our cabaret night at the end of June.”

When 24 June arrives, drag queen Lily Snatchdragon will host proceedings, closely aided by fellow thespian Pi the Mime and their alterego Mercury Presents.

The workshops will be taught by professional mentors including actor and director, Natasha Vasandani, and clown, Angela de Castro.

Arts Council England’s ‘Let’s Create Jubilee Fund’, made possible by the national lottery, is giving £4.58 million to community organisations across the UK to celebrate the Queen’s 70-year-reign.

Local people are invited to join the trail, which will lead people to different trees, each representing a different decade of the Queen's 70-year-reign.

The history trail will reflect the park’s rich social history, “taking place in an imagined world where the trees are talking to each other as custodians of the community”.

The festivities will begin with Thursday’s ‘Welcome to the Gaybourhood’ party at local bar and restaurant Bobo Social, Sayer Street.

Bank holiday revellers are invited to a free night of pop, disco, dancing queens and two for one drinks between 6 and 7pm.

Friday signals Castle Square’s street party where, from 11am until 5pm, guests can enjoy a day full of music, food, drinks and live performances.

Local traders will be cooking up dishes from around the world which can be sampled in the sunshine thanks to an alfresco dining area.

Each trader will provide an exclusive Jubilee menu. Guests can choose from Coma Y Beba’s Sandwich Super Special, Daddy O's Jollof Rice, Curried Goat from Original Caribbean Spice and more.

The play is the story of a squirrel called Ana and her cousin, Silly, and is suitable for children aged two and over.

Camberwell Connection is a collaboration between musical artists Dubplate Pearl & Mr Swing Easy, who deliver reggae, soul and jazz beats on original vinyl.

Henry VIII not on fire this time

Blurred Lines in East Dulwich International artist Stella Cardew ARCA has her latest solo exhibition at the Jeannie Avent Gallery, writes Michael Holland...

The artworks, with their theme of nature, have been completed since her show here last year, although there are a few figurative pieces included that were painted earlier.

Paintings of tulips, roses and small birds surrounded by flora bring the white-walled gallery to life. There are flowers in jugs, jars and vases, as well as insects. But even though the theme is nature-based, the paintings are almost other-worldly, there is a magicrealism within them that makes the viewer want to look deeper into the pictures. It is there that they find the essence of the artist’s work; basically, Stella brings an abstract aspect to the nature that gives her the inspiration to paint.

The figurative work displays the same qualities. There is the easily recognisable human form but often the lines between life

and beyond are blurred with an explosion of colour as a backdrop to the physical world.

The faces are created with a few simple lines, or none at all. Her daughter Emily is the model for one painting, but you would never know.

But none of these particular characteristics disturbs the viewer; they somehow enhance the pictures and make us ask questions of them rather than merely look and move on.

Stella Cardew’s work is a product of her Royal College of Art tuition, plus the movements she followed, including PostImpressionism and, more recently, primitive art. All those influences have come together in the creation of this rather wonderful collection of paintings.

One of his last plays and written with John Fletcher, some feel that it sticks out a bit too stylistically in the canon of the bard. For this summer’s season at Shakespeare’s Globe a new script in collaboration with Hannah Khalil is presented a mere 200 metres from the site where ‘All Is True’, as the play was originally called, had its debut.

The lack of productions could also be down to superstition. It was on this play’s debut in 1613 with ‘certain chambers being shot off’ in Act I Scene 4 that saw the thatch of the original Globe Theatre set alight and within an hour destroy the venue. Directed by Amy Hodge, there is no danger of that happening again. The only cannons being fired here are of the confetti kind.

This version has been thoroughly cut to change the focus to the women at the heart of this story. Khalil’s hand in the script adds Princess Mary to the cast to give another perspective on the events surrounding her family. Lines and passages from Shakespeare’s other works are borrowed, again to draw attention to the women’s stories in this Tudor court, and many of the smaller male roles are cut or are changed from gentleman to woman. With additional songs that attempt to become feminine anthems, it’s hard not to draw comparisons with the musical Six, which has had huge success in telling this piece of our history with the voices of the women of the Royal Family.

The original text focuses on the early reign of Henry VIII, his need for a male heir and the mechanisms of state and church. It covers the breakdown of the marriage with Katherine (of Aragon), the pursuit of Anne Bullin (Boleyn), the downfall of Cardinal Wolsey and the birth of Elizabeth. The timeline in this version sticks true to that but

with Katherine, played superbly by Bea Segura, given more room to highlight the injustice in her treatment.

The production design by Georgia Lowe does help to bring clarity, with the modern/classic attire of the cast being simply colour-coded to align those with the Royal house and those with the Catholic church. In terms of some of Hodge’s direction, the pursuit of clarity becomes blunt and heavy handed. An example is after talks of producing an heir to the throne, balloons fall from the sky, in the pink and blue of a gender reveal party and the manic way in which Henry VIII charges around popping the pink ones is rather crude. Crude, given that this has all happened a while after a scene where a huge golden phallus was dropped onto the stage.

The show as a whole does seem quite muddled but performances from most of the cast are great. Baker Mukasa has

What do you get when you combine women, alcohol and ABBA? What you get is an Abba-Fabbatastic party - The Mamma Mia Party! Of course, men were also in the mix but at about just one or two per cent of the audience we were hardly worth counting, writes Michael Holland.

Heading off the main causeway in the O2 we were slowly transported from Greenwich to the Greek island of Skopelos.

First, the odd exotic plant popped up, then posters promoting blue skies and white sandy beaches appeared, adverts for boat excursions and before we knew it we were in Nikos’ taverna where all the signs were in Greek.

A welcome drink was handed out to one and all, then a Greek salad was

brought to the table, and all soundtracked by traditional Greek music played on a bouzouki. The party had begun. More drinks were ordered.

A subtle change in the lighting heralded a change in the atmosphere, which made us all look up from our feta cheese.

In the spotlight were Nikos’ daughter Konstantina, and the English barman Adam, looking like two little lovebirds.

Nikos is not happy and offers up some nice, single Greek boys for her. Love, however, makes its own plans.

Elsewhere in the taverna, Debbie the chef has set fire to the kitchen while having a crafty fag; Nikos’ British wife Kate is trying to keep peace in the family and the business running smoothly. Besides arguments over their daughter, they also

fight over the choice of music played. He wants traditional music, she wants ABBA. There was only ever going to be one winner…All these incidents were going on under the watchful eye of Grandma, the matriarch.

The storyline ensures a constant stream of ABBA hits that move the narrative along. Each time the audience picked up on a clue to what would be coming next a great cheer went up, so you can imagine the roar when a hunk of a repairman swaggered in to fix the ovens and was greeted as Fernando! ‘You can fix me, Fernando,’ was one of the less excitable comments shouted from my table…

Once he had done his job the main course was served (succulent beef and lamb) before the action continued and

made its way to the expected happy ending. But even then we were treated to a medley of ABBA’s finest hits before the performers handed over the stage to the audience so they could dance away to their heart’s content as more ABBA hits were piped through.

Mamma Mia! The Party is a real feast of musical fun. The action goes on everywhere in this huge space: to the left, the right, in front and behind, and even - in a magical trapeze sequence - up above.

There is what seems like a cast of thousands, all singing and all dancing for this pan-generational crowd - The young and the old and all those in between singing along - word perfect - to every song. And everyone there was made to feel welcome at the taverna. Each person

a wonderful presence as both Norfolk and Sands, and alongside Jamie Ballard’s Cardinal Wolsey they both handle the space well in what can be acoustically a tough task. Adam Gillen’s Henry VIII comes across as clownish at times and this is not helped when being at the heart of the show’s bawdy moments.

The additions and changes to the script do certainly achieve the goal of bringing a female focus to this part of Tudor history. However, you do wonder if others have done this more succinctly and effectively when starting afresh, rather than trying to re-work it into one of Shakespeare’s more difficult pieces.

A chink was discovered in my Indy armour when at the end I joyously cried aloud, ‘You can never have too much ABBA’.

And that just about sums up Mamma Mia! The Party. Four hours of theatre, live music, circus, great food and drink, and an Abba disco to finish! What’s not to like?

sport@southwarknews.co.uk OLLIE POPE scored 62 from 46 balls as Surrey began their Vitality Blast campaign in thrilling style by beating Glamorgan by four wickets with one ball to spare in front of a 16,000 crowd at the Kia Oval.

Pope was joined by Sam Curran in a fourth wicket stand of 62 and Surrey got home at 174 for six despite a late flurry of wickets as Michael Hogan almost pulled the game out of the hat for Glamorgan, who had earlier totalled 173 for five.

England Test batsman Pope paced his knock superbly and, with the win all but assured, completed his fifty with two outrageous reverse flipped fours to fine third man off Dan Douthwaite’s fast medium, before flat-batting another four through mid off from the next ball.

Pope hit eight fours but when he and Jordan Clark, who thumped a useful 17, both skied catches in an extraordinary penultimate over from Hogan that also cost only one run it suddenly looked possible for Surrey to mess up. Hogan’s 5 for 18 was a Glamorgan T20 record against Surrey.

But Jamie Overton and Chris Jordan, now captaining Surrey in T20 cricket on his return from Sussex, held their nerve. With eight required from Michael Neser’s final over, Overton pulled and drove twos from the first and fifth balls, Jordan also sprinted back for a second run in between two singles and Surrey were home.

Sam Northeast’s 65 from 51 balls had anchored Glamorgan’s innings, and he hit Reece Topley for successive sixes in a 19th over costing 24 runs. Those were Northeast’s last two scoring shots, as he miscued the next ball to long on where Jason Roy ran in and tumbled forward to take the catch.

But it was Chris Cooke who provided the real impetus in his belligerent 27-ball 46 in the second half of the innings, with West Indian mystery spinner Sunil Narine the stand-out bowler with one for 17 from his four overs on his Surrey debut.

Surrey lost openers Jason Roy, for 15, and Will Jacks, for 6, in the third over of their reply. Roy skied Hogan to cover in his first county appearance of the season and when Jacks also fell miscuing Surrey were 23 for two.

But Laurie Evans, badly dropped on four at mid wicket by David Lloyd off Neser, played some powerful shots in his 23 and when he was caught off Douthwaite in the ninth over the Surrey chase had already gathered momentum.

Pope preys on bowlers to get Surrey off to a winner

With second win on Tuesday over Gloucestershire Ollie Pope for a straight six, a pulled four and then a sweetly swung six over mid wicket from consecutive balls in the 13th over and when he skied Hogan to deep square leg to go for 36 it was left to Clark to help Pope steer Surrey close to the winning line.

Glamorgan, put in, reached 67 for two at the halfway stage of their innings, with Northeast and Marnus Labuschagne doing their best to accelerate the scoring against some excellent bowling from Surrey’s strong and varied attack.

Northeast took successive lofted fours off Topley’s second over with the new ball,

first down the ground and then whipped towards wide long on, but Lloyd went for three in the fourth over – hitting Dan Worrall’s first ball straight to deep cover on the ropes.

Labuschagne’s 20 ended at the start of the seventh over when he uppercut Overton’s first ball to third man, where Topley judged the catch well.

And Topley, at short fine leg, then produced a brilliant leaping effort to remove Kiran Carlson for nine as he tried to paddle-sweep the impressive Narine in the 12th over.

Northeast had earlier unveiled an

extraordinary tennis-style pull-hook for four in Overton’s second over and the same bowler conceded 20 when he returned for the 14th over of the innings and Chris Cooke slashed and swung him for two big sixes.

Cooke and Northeast added 63 for the fourth wicket, before Cooke top-edged a hook at Curran to long leg in the 18th over.

Douthwaite pulled his first ball, from Topley, for six and both he and Joe Cooke, who slashed Jordan away through the vacant slip area for two fours in the final over, finished on 10 not out.

Crowley led the way in his best innings for the club to date, making 44 off 49 balls before being caught with the score on 136. Michael Harms went for a single, but Simon Harwood helped Lodwick take the score to 149 before the latter fell for 34, off 54 balls.

Harwood was joined by Salaar Waqar, in the unaccustomed position of number eleven, and they put on a crucial 17 for the last wicket before Waqar fell for

6, leaving Harwood undefeated on 7.

Dulwich were all out for 166 after 41.4 overs. Valley End’s skipper, spinner Tom Nevin, was the pick of their bowlers with 4-31.

Harwood took the first wicket in his second over, but this was not enough to stop the Valley End batsmen racing away, taking full advantage of the fielding restrictions. Jayden Clark faced just 22 balls in also scoring 28 of the first 35 runs before falling to Harwood, and Ed Young continued the onslaught. The opening bowlers came off after conceding 76 runs in just nine overs as Purshouse turned to his spinners. He gained immediate reward as Khan had Young lbw with his first ball for 29, off just 17 balls.

Josh Dodd continued the attack against Khan and Brown, who conceded 20 runs and 17 runs respectively off their first two overs, but the two spinners then

started to take control. Brown’s dismissal of Dodd for 32, off 21 balls, with the score on 124 in the 17th over, brought about an abrupt change in the course of the innings. Brown followed up with two wickets in successive balls in his next over, starting with the obdurate Josh Chauhan, who had held one end steady for 23, off 46 balls, while the carnage went on at the other end. By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH OVERCAME a poor start in both innings to secure a nailbiting victory by two runs at Valley End last weekend, and record their first victory of the season in Division 1 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship.

Dulwich chose to bat but had a disastrous start as skipper Chris Purshouse, James Schofield and Ahmed Khan were all dismissed without scoring, to leave them reeling on 9-3 after five overs. Ollie Steele had scored all of those runs and had advanced to 28, off 35 balls,

against these to reach 149 at the end of their spells. The spinners had both recovered superbly from their earlier mauling, with Brown finishing with 5-36 off his ten overs, and Khan 2-32 off his ten. Amidst mounting tension Wellman and Coggins took 14 off the next four overs, bowled by Waqar and Harwood.

The score had thus reached 163 when Purshouse turned to opening bowler Crowley, who had gone for 29 in his first four overs. It proved to be an inspired decision. Coggins took a single off the first ball but Wellman was bowled by the sixth to give Dulwich victory by two runs.

This win lifts Dulwich to eighth, level with Wimbledonians. This weekend the format switches to ‘time’ games, which in this division are played over a minimum of 120 overs. Dulwich have another difficult fixture when they travel to Guildford, who are currently third.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk TAKING ADVANTAGE of the opportunity to travel and compete again, Tokei judo club secured an invite from Jersey judo to send a team to join their annual inter-island competition with Guernsey late last month.

Tokei sent fix players to compete at St Brelade, including two members of the club who had not yet experienced formal competition as they had only taken up judo just before the Covid-19

lockdown.

Tokei trained with some of the Jersey competitors at one of their clubs, a Napoleonic Tower in Fort Regent, the evening before the tournament.

Despite the regal setting it was however a very cautious session with members on both sides not wanting to show their favourite techniques in advance of the big day.

Tokei were thrilled that the team all managed to come away with a medal: Jonathan Socrates winning bronze (under-73kgs), Michael Curtis silver (under-73kgs), Wilf Taylor bronze

(under-81kgs) and Gar Wong gold (under-90kgs).

The final of the under-100kgs match was also an all-Tokei event, with Mustapha Obalanlege beating Simon Rose to take the gold medal.

Tokei judo club train in a purposebuilt dojo off Tooley Street on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with Brazilian Ju Jitsu (BJJ) training on Thursdays and Saturdays. They are a club with a significant proportion of more mature players returning to the sport. New players are always very welcome.

Walworth cruiserweight one win away from title shot

That’s according to BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom, who was speaking ahead of Riakporhe’s cruiserweight eliminator bout against Fabio Turchi at Wembley Arena on June 11.

Shalom is hoping for a showdown between Walworth’s Riakporhe and WBC champion Ilunga Makabu.

‘The Midnight Train’ has an unbeaten 14-0 professional record after he stopped Deion Jumah with a body shot in the eighth round of their fight in March.

Turchi’s record stands at 20-1, his only defeat coming against Britain’s Tommy McCarthy in October 2019.

“We’re very close [to a world title].

We promised him, he was the first fighter to join, that we’re going to get you that world title,” Shalom told Sky Sports.

“He’s stepped up every time, he did really well against Deion Jumah.

“Now he’s fighting Turchi who will look to nullify the power we know Richard fights with. It’s going to be an intriguing fight. If he comes through that a world title fight will 100 per cent be next.

“There are three options for him.

We like the Makabu fight, we think that’s a perfect fight for Richard, a lot of other cruiserweights do as well.

“We think he’s ready, he’s 32 years old now, he’s going to be taking on Turchi. If he comes through that then we want to see that.

“We’re speaking to Don King’s team at the moment, he’s obviously involved with Makabu, we’ve got a good relationship, he’s helped us on a few things.

“I think he’s desperate to get over to the UK and be involved with a fight night. I think it’s genuinely realistic.

“Richard can’t take his eye off the ball. Fabio Turchi is a seasoned operator, he’ll see it as his chance, his way back in almost after Tommy McCarthy, and he’s got to be on his game.

“He’s never faced a style like Turchi.”

Jamie, who is a year 9 pupil at St Thomas the Apostle Catholic School in Nunhead, travelled to Rome to take part in the Italian C2 Open RowErg Championship, and C2 Sprint Championship.

Although branded an indoor rowing Championship, the event was held outdoors at the magnificent and picturesque Olympic Park, Stadio dei Marmi – Stadium of Marbles – in sweltering 30 degree heat.

On the opening day of the competition, Jamie powered home to win the Junior 14s 1500m event by a 34-metre, 7.2 second margin in a winning time of five minutes, 6.4 seconds (a split-time of 1m:42sec).

The following day, which was the Sprint day, Jamie won his second Italian race, this time over 500m in a very impressive one minute 33.8 seconds with a 2.8 second, fifteenmetre gap back to second place.

Jamie’s winning time would have given him silver in the older fifteen-, sixteen-year-old event.

Commenting on his achievements, Jamie said: “I felt sorry for the Italian boys that I had come and ‘stolen’ both the golds in their National Championships.

“It does seem a bit odd that it is a ‘National’ championship but open to an International entry. But those were the rules so I was able to compete.

“Everyone was really friendly and welcoming to me and made quite a big fuss of me after my first win. On Sunday everyone seemed to know me and so it was a great competition and an awful lot of fun.

“I was delighted to win as I took part in the UK National Junior Indoor Rowing Championship (NJIRC) back in March and only finished fifth from an entry of 841 boys (and 25th from all 3866 all-ages secondary school boys), which was my first indoor rowing competition.

“I took part in that competition five weeks after I broke my shoulder and had not been able to train at all for the competition. The NJIRC is very much a schools’ competition.

“I am trying to encourage my school to get involved with indoor rowing and enter a team next year.

I would recommend the sport to all schools.

“My ambition is to make up for my NJIRC defeat by trying to win the British Rowing Indoor Championship in November.”

Jamie gave an insight into what training involves.

He said: “The indoor rowing machine is a great substitute for not being able to get on the water. I row for Team Keane based in Brentford but can only get to the club to train on the water at the weekends.

“My school have been really supportive of my rowing activities, giving me loads of encouragement and allowing me time out to take part in events. As much as I really like my school I would love to be able to go to one of the top rowing schools.

“Indoor rowing is really good for fitness. I started using the indoor rowing machine last summer when after Covid I realised how much my weight had shot up. I knew I was getting heavy but never realised how much weight I had put on. I got on the scales one day and was horrified to see that I was 98kgs.

“By rowing for 10 minutes a day, at what I thought at the time was a quite hard, intense pace, I managed to reduce my weight to 77kgs in three months.”

Building for the future Millwall chief discusses new training ground plans

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL CEO Steve Kavanagh believes the Lions’ proposed new training ground is “an important step” in helping the club to “continue to grow and develop” after more details about the project were released this week.

Millwall want to re-locate their training base to West Kingsdown in Kent and Kavanagh is focussing on the planning application. The Lions hope that will go through later this year and that the development, which will be on 50 acres, will be completed by autumn 2024.

In a statement this week, Millwall said that the objective “has been to develop a contemporary and unique design solution that is rooted in the local area, but that is also fit to meet the aspirations of a forward-looking and dynamic club looking to provide high-quality training facilities for its players and the local community”.

Kavanagh further elaborated on the plans this week when he spoke to the

News.

“It’s an important step in building the long-term future and sustainability of the club to give it the platform to continue to grow and develop,” Kavanagh said.

“Over the last five years or so the club has moved forward. In the last three years we’ve been on the edges of the play-offs. What we need to do now is to make sure the infrastructure around us allows that development to continue and to keep moving the club forward.

“The two training sites [for the first team and academy] at Calmont Road in Bromley and Blackheath Rugby Club, we don’t own either of those, they’re leased.

So we don’t ultimately own and control how we develop those sites. Those sites are at least six miles apart which leads to logistical complexities.

“You’ve then got staff based at The Den, so you’ve got staff on three different sites.

Then you’ve got players spread about.

“Because you don’t own those sites, improving them and moving them forward to modern facilities is difficult.

You can’t start knocking buildings down and building at Calmont Road because we don’t own it. If you did own it it’s only fifteen acres and therefore nowhere

near big enough to really warrant the investment you would require to build something.

“And with the expiry of those leases heading at us like a fast-approaching train, we’ve taken the view to try and find some land to develop something that will be ours, that will be an asset of the club.

It’s a balance sheet asset but also an asset in terms of the development of players and how we bring players through to that first team.”

Head of football operations Alex Aldridge will also be involved in the development of the new training base.

Kavanagh said the club will look at other training grounds once the planning application has gone through.

Kavanagh continued: “There’s a wellestablished set-up of how training grounds are laid out. Our search for a site was over three years. It wasn’t easy, this is the only site we found that we could even consider starting to take forward.

“On that site it’s 50 acres, excluding ancient woodland, so 50 acres that we can put pitches on. There’s another site which we also own there as well on the other side of the M20. We’re not touching that, that’s a farmer’s field and we’ll leave

Bike ride in honour of Jiggo

Journalist and Lions fan Paul died of a heart attack at the age of 50 last March.

own in March 2022, as we said our goodbyes to renowned football journalist, Paul Jiggins.

“As well as a life-long Lions fan, ‘Jiggo’ contributed to Millwall’s success on countless occasions – shining a light on the brilliant work of The Millwall Community Trust and more recently becoming a host on the club’s official podcast, Wall Talk.

“We’re focused on the planning application. Of course what we will do at some point is look at how other training grounds are set up.

“In AFL, which is the architect we selected for [the redevelopment of] The Den, we’ve used them again and they have got vast experience in building training grounds and looking at training ground layouts. At this stage we rely on that but of course at some stage we will get around to some other sites. But we’ve got to get planning first before we get to that phase.”

The News asked Kavanagh how much the project will cost.

Kavanagh replied: “At this stage it’s not something I really want to get into because we’ve got to get planning.

It’s a complex site. It’s green belt.

Permitted development on green belt is recreational use. However the site doesn’t have any buildings on it, so we need very special circumstances and this is a complex planning application because of that.

“We have to be very sensitive in our work to that, to the local environment, to the fact that it is green belt and how we

do that. Way over 90 per cent of the site will still be green and recreational use but we have to accept we’ve got to put a building on there and we have to put the indoor dome to ensure our academy status is secure.

“So first and foremost we’ll get the planning application through. We’ve got rough, broad ideas, we’ve got outlines, but that’s not the key component at this stage, that comes next. I can spend a whole lot of time getting engineers in, value engineering, what’s this going to cost, what does that cost – that’s once you’ve got planning. At this point we’ve focussing on what’s needed.

“Clearly, it’s not going to be cheap because building pitches is an expensive hobby. Building indoor pitches is very expensive and building buildings in this day and age isn’t cheap.

“How we fund it and how we build that out, it is an asset that we’re building so we will be and are exploring all different avenues of how we fund that and how we do that.

“At this stage that’s really loose. I’m focussed on planning, getting the planning through and making sure that we can actually go and build this.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FOR ALL the excitement of last season and Millwall remarkably taking their play-of challenge to the last day, there was a depressingly familiar feel about the top of the Championship.

Fulham went straight back up as champions and AFC Bournemouth joined them after just two seasons in the second tier.

It is the Cottagers’ third promotion to the Premier League over the last five seasons since Millwall came up from League One. And that is something that has become more of a regular feature of the division.

Norwich have been relegated immediately after promotion to the Premier League three times in a row.

Both the Canaries and Watford were relegated in 2019-20 only to go back up the following season. No doubt they will be among the front-runners again next season after relegation in 2021-22.

It’s not difficult to identify the root of this problem, where the same handful of clubs are going up and coming back down.

The Premier League introduced parachute payments in 2006-07 and said “they allow clubs to invest in their teams, and wider operations, in the knowledge that should they be relegated they have provisions in place to re-adjust their finances.

“Since 2016-17, payments are made over three years, with the amount received decreasing after each year.”

In 2017-18, for example, the Premier League paid £243m in parachute payments which was split between eight clubs. Solidarity payments of £100million were split between the remaining 64 EFL clubs.

Two of those eight clubs – Cardiff and Fulham – were promoted, while another – Aston Villa – reached the play-off final.

It’s no wonder that Lions CEO Steve Kavanagh wants to see changes.

“At the moment there is a cliff edge between the Premier League and the Championship,” Kavanagh said. “And if there’s a cliff edge, if you fall off that cliff you need a parachute.

“If you bring the revenue gaps closer together and, as [EFL chairman] Rick Parry says, make it a step – you should be rewarded for getting to the Premier League, of course you should – but make it a step, not a cliff edge, which it has become, then you don’t need a parachute to step off a step.

“Redistribution is critical to the long-term future and sustainability of football. And everyone in the EFL accepts that redistribution has to come with regulations to ensure that redistribution doesn’t just lead to the same amount of losses that have led to clubs being in serious financial difficulty and even big clubs such as Derby risking going out of business.

“We need the regulations to make sure that money goes into making these clubs sustainable so it isn’t just then being spewed out the back end.

“It’s more than just parachutes, it’s about holistically redefining where that gap between the Championship and the Premier League is and making sure the Championship can be sustainable but also can aspire to get into the Premier League and be capable of doing it.

“Otherwise football is in danger of becoming boring because with the same teams going up and down, it ruins the dream.

“That dream should be there.

Nottingham Forest just got back after 23 years and a lot of hard work, a lot of

money, and we need to make sure that that transition of clubs like Forest and the ability of a club like Millwall to get into the Premier League, that isn’t just a pipedream, it can be a reality based on good, solid hard work and by doing things properly behind the scenes rather than having to go into the casino and stick everything on red.”

Millwall won’t be taking gambles like that, but if something doesn’t change then the odds on promotion to the Premier League will always be heavily stacked against them.

Two depart from backroom staff

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL HAVE confirmed the departures of technical coach Joe Carnall and head of performance Laurence Bloom.

Carnall has stepped down “to pursue new opportunities”, while Bloom is joining Cambridge United.

“Carnall joined the club with Gary Rowett in October 2019 and has worked as part of the senior squad’s coaching team, and alongside other departments, over the course of the past two and a half seasons, contributing significantly to eighth, 11th, and ninth-place finishes in the Championship during that time,” Millwall said. “He has stepped down from his position to pursue new opportunities in the future.

“Bloom arrived at Millwall in June 2016 with the responsibility of enhancing the club’s sports science and performance functions and helped the Lions achieve promotion from League One at the end of his first season at the club.

He has been an integral member of staff throughout his six years, helping with the overall effort of consolidating the Lions in the top half of the Championship in recent campaigns.

“Everyone at the club would like to wish both Carnall and Bloom, who is joining Cambridge United, the very best of luck in the future careers, and thank them for their outstanding efforts, commitment, and professionalism throughout their respective time with Millwall.”

‘Don’t give up’ – ex-Lion has message for youngsters

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FORMER MILLWALL striker Alfie Pavey has urged the club’s released youngsters not to “give up” and to “go and sign somewhere to play 30, 40 games”.

The Lions confirmed their retained list last month and under-23s Sean O’Brien, Junior Tiensia, Kai Garande, Dan Moss and Jayden Davis were not given new deals.

Moss has already sorted out the next part of his career as he will join National League Woking on July 1.

Lions under-18s Ryan Hammond, Ramez Hefzalla and Bobby Dailly are also searching for new clubs.

Pavey was a relatively latecomer to the professional ranks. He was seventeen

when he joined Millwall from Maidstone United.

Pavey made his debut at nineteen, coming on in a 4-2 defeat at Wolves on the last day of the 2014-15 season.

But Pavey, 26, was released by Millwall in the summer of 2017 after eight substitute appearances for the club.

The forward has since enjoyed a career in non-league football, playing for clubs including Dartford, Maidstone and Havant & Waterlooville.

Pavey scored six goals in eighteen games on loan at National League Dover Athletic last season. He will leave Maidstone – who were promoted as National League South champions – this summer.

Pavey – who is currently doing a UEFA B coaching course – had advice for the youngsters leaving the Lions after this

season.

“Just don’t give up,” Pavey said. “You feel like the world’s coming down on you but at the end of the day you’ve just got to go back out there.

“At that age it’s not about money or having to pay your bills, it’s about trying to build a career.

“Just go and sign somewhere. Just go and play 30, 40 games in the season and do the best you can.

“Earn your stripes. There is nothing better than doing that and then trying to kick on from there.

“I had to do that at Dartford. I left Millwall and signed for Welling for two weeks. It didn’t work out, I had to leave.

I went to Dartford and scored 25 goals and have had a career out in non-league.

“Definitely sign somewhere and go play games.”

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL HAVE demanded a meeting with Lewisham Council as lease negotiations over The Den drag on and prevent the club moving to the next phase of their regeneration plans.

It is more than three years since an agreement was reached with the council that saw Millwall stay at their home, after fears the club would be forced out by Lewisham’s plans to compulsorily purchase land around The Den. And in January of this year, the

initial planning application for the New Bermondsey redevelopment was approved. Millwall told the News at the time that they hoped “Lewisham Council can now hasten the finalisation of the lease for land around The Den so that Millwall can be at the heart of these endeavours as promised”.

As well as their plans to redevelop The Den, Millwall are aiming to submit a planning application for a new training ground in Sevenoaks.

Lions chief executive Steve Kavanagh has been much more satisfied with how Sevenoaks Council have worked with the club.

“I’ve demanded a meeting with the mayor of Lewisham,” Kavanagh

told the News this week. “I have expressed in a couple of podcasts I did that we’re very frustrated that the lease negotiations are still ongoing nearly three years later.

“We need the lease to move to the next stage and we’re extremely frustrated that the Council haven’t so far come forward with a deliverable plan that is commercially viable for what is required around here.

“And the speed with which, and the way that Sevenoaks have worked with us, flies in the face of what’s been going on in Lewisham.

But hopefully we can get that logjam resolved soon and allow that aspect to move forward as well.

“They [the new training ground

and the redevelopment of The Den] are two key components in the longterm viability and sustainability of this club.

“We’re frustrated, we want to get it going. As we’ve seen with Sevenoaks, the way we’ve worked with the Council to get this through to this stage to be ready to go to a planning application shows how eager we are to develop the club and the assets.

“We want to do that around The Den as well. We’re very frustrated it’s taken this long and the Council haven’t so far come up with a commercially viable solution to how we do that from a lease perspective.”

Jed could be close to decision

JED WALLACE could make a decision on his future after his wedding this week.

Wallace, 28, is out of contract at the end of June and has reportedly had talks with Millwall’s Championship rivals West Bromwich Albion.

Wallace and his partner had a pre-wedding do in Surrey last weekend before jetting off to Spain with family and friends.

The Surrey bash was on the same weekend as the Championship play-off final which was won by Nottingham Forest, who tried to sign the attacker in January.

It remains to be seen if Forest will go back in for Wallace. Forest bagged £170million after beating Huddersfield Town 1-0 to secure a return to the Premier League after a 23-year absence.

“I always said from February/ March time, I wanted to finish the season, see where Millwall finished, get married and then think about what I am going to do after that.

That’s not really changed,” Wallace said.

“What I will say is I have loved my time at Millwall and if that carries on I am more than happy with that.”

Wallace also addressed the money aspect of any potential move, and referenced Turkish side Besiktas’s interest in him in January.

Wallace said: “I think people think sometimes you want to move so you can get a few extra quid in your pocket but it’s not like that for me. If it was I’d be on a flight to Istanbul.

“I’ve never made it a secret that I want to have a chance in the Premier League.”
