E-scooters: a major problem for the blind

E

-scooters are set to be legalised this year, with supporters touting them as an efficient and environmentally-friendly way of getting around. Detractors have concerns about the safety for people riding them, and there is evidence that they can be quite dangerous for riders themselves.

But what about their impact on the blind, and other people with bad eyesight? Asks Kit Heren...

Peckham man Alun Parker, who has been mostly blind for over a decade, said one of the biggest problems was e-scooters riding on the pavement, which is illegal.

"You can’t hear them, they come whizzing past you and they cut you up, it makes you jumpy and you’re not expecting it.

"It’s the speed of them - with that speed on, it’s about as fast as a Honda 50 [motorbike]."

The e-scooters in the Transport for London (TfL) trial go up to 15.5mph, but some private e-scooters claim to reach speeds of 40mph.

Alun hasn't been knocked over by e-scooters but has had "a couple of close scratches," he said. "They just whizz off. By the time I get my phone out to take a picture they've already gone."

The government said earlier this month that it would make legalising and regulating the use of e-scooters a priority for 2022 in the Queen's Speech, the government's programme of laws it wants to pass in the year.

Despite only Transport for London (TfL) hire scooters being legal to use on public roads, lots of different e-scooters can be spotted on London streets and pavements, and only in certain parts of the capital - including Southwark. Separate to the government's plan to legalise e-scooters, the TfL hire trial was extended recently until November this year.

Alun, who walks with a cane, said: "I’d rather they not legalise them, I’d rather they do away with them. I know it’s a good idea for people to travel around, but they’re not considerate.

Caroline Pidgeon, Lib Dem deputy chair of the London Assembly transport committee, called for strict regulation for e-scooters, like speed limits and better safety measures.

And Alun said: "If they are going to legalise it it should be done properly I suppose.

"I know the world’s going to progress.

But it doesn’t help the rest of us. I’m not too disgruntled, I suppose if I was fully sighted myself I would use them."

Another problem for people with sight problems is people leaving e-scooters and hire bikes lying on the pavement, Alun said.

"They leave them lying around. I just can’t see them. The bikes are worse, they just dump them everywhere."

He added that bus stops separated from the road by a cycle lane "don't help at all."

Alun said: " Some of them there aren't crossings on, also the scooters often don’t have lights on of a night-time, so you feel like you're taking your life in your hands."

Alun, who worked in Sainsbury's for 35 years, said that losing much of his sight as an adult has had a huge effect on his life, and that sadly some people do not treat his disability with respect.

"When I'm in the shop I get my magnifier out [to look at items on shelves]. People have put their hand on my stick to move me out of the way. When you get to the till, people brush in front of you. On buses, people all jump on in front of you."

Tina Johnston, who runs services for elderly people, including people with visual impairments, at the Blackfriars Settlement community centre, said she was worried about incidents with her charges, but that none had happened so far "thank God." "The danger is maybe they might not be quick enough to stop [if a scooter were coming towards them]. That worries me. The bus stop is in the middle of the road. These little things niggle me and worry."

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A "Bermondsey born and bred" man took part in early celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee last Saturday May 21 - and even the people sitting around him didn't know his own personal history with Elizabeth II.

John Heasman, 79, has been a St John Ambulance volunteer since 1959. And it was in that capacity that he was standing in a large crowd on the Mall in central London on a hot sunny day in June 1981, when he heard six shots ring out from over his shoulder.

Marcus Serjeant, a 17-year-old from Folkestone in Kent, had fired at the Queen - blanks as it turned out, but no one knew at the time.

John instinctively turned around and grabbed him, using his training from a

stint in the army to disarm the wouldbe regicide. He was the first to grab Serjeant, before a lance-corporal in the Scots Guards moved in with his bayonet, followed swiftly by angry members of the

crowd.

The police soon came and took Serjeant away. Serjeant, who only used blanks because he couldn't find bullets for his father's revolver, was given five years in

Southwark's mayor to promote civic pride, they now can.

Cllr Victor Chamberlain, the recently elected leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrats, who nominated Daley for the award, said: “Tom is an inspiration to us here. It’s a way of saying we really value his contribution to the borough, to sport and to LGBTQ rights.

“We hope to get him even more involved in the area. This borough has some of the worst child obesity in the country and he’s a big ambassador, encouraging people to be healthy.”

Originally from Plymouth, Daley moved to Southwark in 2014. In 2018, he opened the Marlborough Sports Garden on Union Street and has been a supporter of environmental charity Bankside Open Spaces Trust, Red Cross Garden (BOST).

The Queen's horse was startled, but she was praised for the speed with which she got it under control.

John had to give a police statement, missing the rest of the ceremony, and was later escorted home to Bermondsey by officers so as to avoid the tabloid press, who all wanted an interview - only to find the reporters gathered outside his home when he got there. "How did they find out where I lived?" he said on Saturday.

He was given a citation for bravery and invited to meet the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1982. Asked how they were, he said "they were like us really, very polite". At the event on Saturday, people sitting around John said they didn't know of his heroics.

John grew up on the Rotherhithe New Road, before moving to the old Bonamy Estate and then the Bonamy and Bramcote. He served in the army in the jungles of Borneo, where he had his 21st birthday, before being discharged. "I

couldn't take the climate," he explained.

He later delivered girders for a lift company for a living.

John has been a St John Ambulance volunteer for over 60 years, where he is chairman of the Dulwich unit, and still works giving first aid at Millwall home games.

He was discussing the incident at the Bonamy and Bramcote Estate's event to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. Dozens of local residents came to the Links Community Centre for drinks, sandwiches and cake, as well as for a raffle.

The estate has recently been rocked by the murders of residents Dolet Hill and Denton Burke, and Ms Hill's daughter and granddaughter Tanysha (aka Rachquel) Ofori-Akuffo and Samantha Drummonds,

by Ms Drummonds' partner. Residents shared their shock at the incident on Saturday, with one woman saying: "It's just terrible. You'd expect that somewhere else, like in Hackney, but not here."

Southwark writer on black British history Stephen Bourne, former council chief executive Eleanor Kelly and Peckham Town manager and former England footballer Mary Philip also got the award at the Southwark Civic Awards, held at Southwark Cathedral.

The Freedom of Southwark is a ceremonial award given out by the council that recognises people's contribution to the borough.

Builders unearthed World War Two bombs in Herne Hill garden and officers detonated it at local golf course Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Builders working at a Herne Hill property found two WW2 bombs buried in the back garden last week, prompting police to evacuate the road, with one bomb being detonated at the local golf course.

Neighbour Julian Farrow five per cent discounts on their meals.

Julian Farrow, who lives next door to the address where the explosives were found, said the bombs crossed the boundary into his garden.

He saw a chinook flying overhead while bringing his son home from school. On returning, police told the pair not to enter the house.

Cyclist hospitalised after collision on Old Kent Road

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A cyclist was rushed to hospital with a head injury last week after a collision with a car on the Old Kent Road.

A local business owner said he saw the cyclist being taken off on a stretcher. He added that he saw blood spattered on the busy road after the collision, which took place at about 1pm on Thursday, May 19, at the junction with Madron Street.

Officers said they did not think the man's life was in danger. The London Ambulance Service said he was taken to a major trauma centre as a priority, to be treated for a head injury.

The Old Kent Road was closed off for

about two hours, eyewitnesses said, while police dealt with the aftermath of the crash.

A spokesperson for the Met said: "Police were called at approximately 13:10hrs on Thursday, 19 May to reports of a car in collision with a cyclist on Madron Street, junction with Old Kent Road, SE17.

"Officers and London Ambulance Service attended.

"The male cyclist – no further details – was taken to hospital for treatment; his condition is not thought to be life threatening.

"Road closures were put in place while the scene was dealt with.

Enquiries into the circumstances continue."

The married father-of-one said: “No I wasn’t shocked. I think because we Londoners have got used to this sort of thing. The blitz spirit lives on!”

“There’s probably some more stray bombs in my garden.”

According to local history buff, Peter Blair, records show that numerous bombing incidents occurred on Danecroft and adjacent Frankfurt Road after a raid on 29 December 1940.

On that night, the Nazis dispatched 136 bombers which dropped 100,000 bombs on London, including St Paul’s Cathedral’s, a firebombing soon dubbed ‘The Second Great Fire of London’.

Retired pharmacist Mr Patel, who lives a few doors up from the bomb site, said he joked with police that the only way he was evacuating was if the alternative was a fivestar hotel.

In March 2015, builders unearthed a 1000lb WW2 bomb in Grange Walk, Bermondsey, causing schools to be evacuated, which was then detonated in a Kent quarry.

Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove said: “Please be assured that whilst these occurrences are rare, we have specialist

officers to deal with incidents such as these. Please contact us if you find anything similar.”

They were unearthed by builders, who struck the two half-a-metre missiles while digging foundations for a kitchen and diner extension, at a Danecroft Road property, around 5pm on Tuesday, May 17.

Mum-of-two and owner of the property, Deborah Gillies, 42, said: “The builders called me saying ‘we’ve got a big problem’.

When he said it was bombs I was in disbelief!”

Lilian Miron, a builder from Romania, was first to find the devices. He heaved them out of the ground with his bare hands, even examining and cleaning one “to make sure it was working”.

Lilian said: “No I wasn’t scared and I didn’t think it was dangerous. It was funny for me!

I got it out, cleaned it and checked to make sure it was working.”

Specialist officers attended and were so concerned by what they found that they performed an emergency detonation at the nearest open space - Dulwich and Sydenham Hill Golf Course.

The bomb was destroyed at 8pm, damaging a bunker, before the police had time to warn the golf course owners, who have since been informed.

Specialist officers examined the second bomb and took it to a hub where it was disposed of.

When police first confirmed the objects were explosives, they went door-to-door, delivering neighbours the bombshell news.

They reportedly closed the road to traffic and asked people to leave their homes, before allowing them back when the bombs had been removed, a few hours later.

May Frost, a 40-year-old copywriter and mum of two said: “I was getting my six and four-year-olds ready for dinner when the policeman came and said we were being evacuated.

“He seemed slightly flustered. He must have been surprised too.”

Southwark police launch crackdown on mobile phone thefts as figures rocket Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark police have launched a crackdown on people stealing mobile phones, with two suspects charged recently and several other arrested.

One of the two people was hit with an attempted robbery charge, while the other was charged with robbery and assault with intent to rob.

Mobile phone snatching is a big, longstanding problem in the north of the borough, especially in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, with hotspots including the areas around London Bridge station and Canada Water tube

station. Police recorded 1,187 instances of robbery of personal property in the borough from May 2021-April 2022, the latest figures on record. The London Bridge and Borough areas had by far the highest robbery rate within Southwark over the same period.

Detective inspector Donnett Oseni of Southwark and Lambeth's burglary and robbery investigation team said

Of the four boroughs the News compared, Tower Hamlets saw the most criminal activity in April, with the most crimes recorded and the highest crime rate per thousand people.

With 860 incidents of violence against the person, Tower Hamlets was the most violent borough.

Vehicle offences numbered 430, making Tower Hamlets' roads the most dangerous of the lot.

Southwark ran a close second, recording just 98 fewer crimes than Tower Hamlets in April.

However, you were less likely to be the victim of a violent attack in Southwark, with 648 'violence against the person' incidents significantly lower than Tower Hamlets' 860.

Southwark's high crime rate is due largely to the staggeringly high prevalence of theft, of which there were 1,060 incidents in April alone.

She told the News: "We’re trying to improve our robbery response.

Summer is coming, there's going to be some warmer weather, with more people out. We're getting some people to justice."

Officers from DI Oseni's team recently raided eight shops in Walworth where criminals had sold on mobile phones and other electronic devices. Some 60 devices that police suspect are stolen were recovered.

She urged people whose phones had been stolen to report them missing to police with the serial number. "If they have been reported lost or stolen with their serial numbers they're not hard to find. But it’s difficult to know if they haven’t been reported."

Anecdotally, people often complain

about teenage boys on bikes circling busy areas like Canada Water station and snatching phones out of commuters' hands. But DI Oseni said: "We do have a lot of young people on bikes but it’s not solely kids. There are a lot of people coming in through London Bridge."

Asked if people should be more careful to avoid having their phone stolen, DI Oseni said: "We’re not victim blaming because you should be able to go out and use your phone safely. But we would say, if possible, be careful when in those areas and try to keep your phone out of sight. And if your phone is stolen please do report it because we do follow up those lines of inquiry."

And addressing thieves or would-be criminals, the detective added: "Don’t do it, because we might catch you."

Lambeth comes third, with a crime count of 2,605 and 7.8 crimes committed per 1000 people.

It was the joint worse for public order offences, with both Lambeth and Tower Hamlets recording 200.

Two people have been charged recently, and several more arrested, while 60 devices were recently recovered

Lewisham in April saw a dramatic fall in crime compared to March, with an overall -12.53% decrease.

Thefts were notably low, with Lewisham being the only borough of the four to record fewer than 500. Robberies were also few, with just 45 recorded.

Police clear out crack den

The flat, which people used to take drugs, was cleared by police from Rotherhithe and Bermondsey, was in Westlake, part of the Silverwood Estate on Rotherhithe New Road.

Photos show the people who used the flat had set up a TV and microwave.

Wreath laid at the door of the cabbie whom London will never forget Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Taxi driver union leaders have laid a wreath on the office door of the late George Vyse, London’s most famous taxi driver, who died in hospital on Sunday May 15, following a collision with a moped.

He conducted much of his business from his office, where he would advise fellow taxi drivers on any problems they had.

Grant said: “I was in the office just last Monday. I’ve sat in there, drinking cups of tea and talking rubbish with George, for

years and years.”

“You’d get such a variety of cab drivers in there, each with their different opinions, and there was George at the centre of it all, arguing the toss over everything.”

After laying the wreath, the three men took a minute's silence, paying their respects on behalf of all their union members.

They also laid a plaque reading “with our deepest sympathy RIP George”, with the three union emblems emblazoned beneath it.

The plaque also has George’s trademark number plate on it ‘HI PCO’, George’s cheeky dig at the PCO, which he constantly badgered with calls defending his cabbie colleagues.

Before George got the PCO to allow

radios, cab drivers had to take their radios from home and hide them under the seat, or strap them to the sun visor.

Grant said, prior to his death, George had wanted to roll out more electric charge points across the capital, for cabbies making the switch to electric cars.

It was meant to be his “swan song”, one final gift for the trade he loved.

Charlie could be coming home Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey boxer who has been living in a care home after a severe brain injury is set to come home.

Charlie Wynn has been in a care home after suffering a bleed to the brain during a sparring session in 2018. He was rushed to hospital for life-saving emergency surgery and was in a "minimally-responsive" state for ten weeks.

Charlie's mother Tina now wants to bring her wheelchair-bound son home so she and her husband can care for him in their flat in Bromley.

The only hitch is that the front door needs to be widened to let Charlie's wheelchair in. The Wynn's housing association A2 Dominion is preparing to carry out the work, starting this Thursday (May 26).

He is wheelchair-bound, and needs to be hoisted in and out. But he recently had a trial lumbar puncture treatment at St George's Hospital in Tooting that could allow him to move his hands and feet more. He is set to have an implant

put in in September.

Charlie can use his left hand more than his right, so he has taught himself to do things with his left - like calling his friends on Face Time.

"He's still Charlie, he's still his usual happy-go-lucky self," Tina said.

"Obviously he regrets what happens, but what can you do?"

Charlie is now sadly going through a divorce from his wife, and has no children, Tina said, which does make the move simpler. Asked if she is confident about taking care of him, she said "100 million per cent. I just want him home."

A footballer and founder of a Bermondsey food bank has vowed not to rest on her laurels despite winning her third community champion award from the players' union.

Millwall goalkeeper Kelly Webster, who launched the Lions Food Hub last year, which operates from the Millwall Community Trust on Bolina Road, won the prestigious PFA award for the third year running on Tuesday night.

Kelly has now retired from football because of a severe ankle injury, so this will be her last award from the PFA. "I am truly honoured to receive the PFA community champion award for the 2021/2022 season," she said.

"There is still so much work to be done in the community, with the cost of living going up and up. At the Lions food hub our number of families has doubled in recent weeks.

"We continue to keep raising money to help feed as many people as possible

while also promoting the right to food as I believe no one should go hungry.

"I am very passionate about mental health too as I have had my own struggles in life. So I will continue to support and help as many people as I can."

Kelly said that looking ahead to life without football "is a hard one for me as I love it so much". She has surgery on her "crumbling" ankle bone coming up in June and will see how her rehabilitation goes.

She added: "I will of course be continuing all the work I do at Lions Food Hub and trying to promote us more to help with getting funding in. If anyone would like to help us they can donate."

Kelly also thanked her wife Ellen Webster for her support, as well as Sean Daly, the CEO of the Millwall Community trust, for giving the food hub space to operate.

St Francesca Cabrini Primary could close after nuns announce plans to move to Africa Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk An Honor Oak primary school run by nuns for over 100 years could close because of low student admissions and the Missionary Sisters’ desire to teach in Africa.

The Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a Roman Catholic religious female congregation that runs schools across the world, will end their stewardship of St Francesca Cabrini Primary School, Honor Oak Park, at the end of the academic year 2023.

In a letter sent on Friday May 13, parents were informed of the decision and told the school's future now lay in the council’s hands.

The letter said: “For some time now the number of parents wanting their children to come to this school has been dropping to the extent that parents of only sixteen children have expressed their first preference to join the school this coming September 2022.

“At the same time the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Cabrini) have been looking to increase the education of children in areas where it is sorely lacking, for example their missions in Eswatini, Ethiopia and Uganda."

The letter went on to explain that lower admissions meant the school was getting less funding and therefore would "not be able to provide the high standard of education the children should be offered and they could receive at other schools".

It said if the school does close, that decision will be taken by Southwark Council, which would work "closely

with all parents" to find alternative places for pupils in the August 2023 academic year.

A parent at the school, who wished to remain anonymous, has said "most parents have gone into panic mode", desperately applying for places in surrounding schools so they can get their first preference.

A parent said: "It's heartbreaking that the school will potentially be closing after serving the community for so many years "The teachers are brilliant and many have there for well over seven years."

However, the parent also said they hadn't received enough notice and it felt as if the situation had already got to "a critical stage". They said: "The schools merged year groups together a few years back in order to deal with the low numbers.

"Instead of being honest with us and saying they are struggling, they said it was for the best teaching of our children.

"It feels like there's not much we can actually do now in regards to keeping the school open."

The proposal to close the school must now follow a statutory process beginning with a pre-consultation.

However, the letter to parents said Southwark Council and the Archdiocese had already tried to find "viable solutions that would safeguard the future of the school" and "regretfully found that none were viable".

A document dated April 6 2022, signed by Diane DalleMolle, Regional Superior at Cabrini Ministries, confirmed the Sisters' decision to leave the school. Parents were only told on

May 13.

Councillor Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, young people and schools, said: “Each school has different circumstances, and needs individual attention to work out how we can best support them.

"Every school in Southwark is at the heart of its local community and it is important that the council is there to provide support. I will be visiting St. Francesca Cabrini school to discuss

the consultation bought forward by the trustees on the future of their school.

"My focus is on the best interests of the children and families and the council will do all we can to support them well."

St Francesca Cabrini Primary School did not wish to comment.

Children up to the age of ten can learn what it's like to take care of animals, plant bulbs, get food packages ready to be sent out to vulnerable people, organise clothes donations or work in an art gallery.

The idea of the scheme, called the Family Volunteering Club, is to get young children in Southwark and Lambeth involved in practical activities, and to help them understand some of the problems people face.

Sessions will start in June and run until December. They will be free but you have to book in advance.

Maddy Mills, who founded the the Family Volunteering Club, said that the club was good for parents as well as their children. "Often you get people who volunteer, and then when they have kids they quite understandably have to pause that... this is a chance for them to get more involved again."

She added: "More than ever, kids are increasingly aware of the issues that our world and societies are facing however big or small."

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council's ambitious and sometimes controversial council housebuilding programme will have its third head in just over a year, after Stephanie Cryan moved on to the finance portfolio.

Rotherhithe's Cllr Cryan, who took the housing job last year on an interim basis, will be replaced by Cllr Darren Merrill, the North Walworth councillor who was formerly in charge of keeping the borough clean and safe.

Southwark Labour wants to build 11,000 new council homes by 2043 to tackle the huge housing waiting list, but has come under fire from some quarters for its plans to build on existing estates.

Meanwhile the council says it has met its target to have built or be building 2,500 homes by this year, but only actually finished 166 from 2018-2022.

Cllr Cryan only came back to the council house and homelessness job in February last year, replacing Cllr Leo Pollak, who stepped down last February.

The other new additions to the cabinet are: North Walworth's Cllr Martin Seaton, who will be in charge of

Council demand answers after a report commissioned on Marie Curie House fire safety does not ‘address the key questions’ Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A fire report commissioned to establish why residents at Marie Curie House, Camberwell, unknowingly lived in a block riddled with safety defects, even after the Lakanal House fire tragedy, has failed to answer that very question.

In 2009, a blaze tore through Lakanal House, Sceaux Gardens, claiming the lives of six people.

Astonishingly, sister block Marie Curie House was not checked for fire safety problems until 2020, and the report was meant to establish why it took so long.

Just over half the households forced to move out while repairs take place have found new homes, according to the Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (TRA) chair.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, told the News last week in her role as cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, before the reshuffle: “We did commission an independent report, and disappointingly, it did not go far enough to address the key questions that we and residents want answers to.

This is not good enough, and we will be pursuing the full, required report until it is done properly.

“We remain very keen to see answers as to why all the required safety works to Marie Curie, which we are currently progressing, were not addressed at the same time as the Lakanal building.

“I understand it will be frustrating for residents to wait a little longer, but we have to get it right. I appreciate everyone’s patience while we work through that process and it will be

approximately 16,000 people, residents have struggled to find homes elsewhere.

Mike Edge, Sceaux Gardens TRA chair, said: “It gets rather dispiriting looking on Homesearch every day because there’s nothing suitable in there.”

Council misses Syrian refugee housing target Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Transport for London (TfL) is looking for a developer to help it build a seventeen-storey office block on top of Southwark tube station.

The 75-metre project got the green light from the Southwark planning committee last year but now TfL need a commercial partner to help fund it.

The development is part of TfL's plan to generate more money outside of fare revenue, which was slashed in the pandemic leaving the agency with a billion-pound hole in its budget.

The tower comes alongside a 25home, fourteen-storey development a short walk away on the corner of the

Cut and Hatfields that will be entirely social housing.

TfL is creating 36 new homes on a nearby site on Southwark Street, in a site that is also largely office and retail space.

The Southwark tube station site will be a timber-laminate hybrid, which TfL said would help make it one of the most sustainable office buildings in the world. Part of this comes from the fact it will be partially heated through excess heat from the station below.

The building is set to open in the next three or four years, provided TfL can find a developer for the site.

As part of the development, TfL will widen the pavement on the Cut, the street that runs past the station and intersects with Blackfriars Road.

Dem leader in the borough, said: “However, missing this rehousing target is particularly shameful due to the humanitarian plight that these unfortunate Syrian refugees were escaping.

"What concerns me with that pledge is that, not only did Labour conveniently forget about asylum seekers who are no longer covered by the media, but we are in the midst of another dreadful war that is causing large numbers of people to flee abroad. I put forward on behalf of the Southwark Liberal Democrat group a cross-party motion in March that called on the council to support Ukrainian refugees. I hope Southwark Labour takes that pledge more seriously and that it uses every power in its capacity to help all refugees whether they are fleeing dreadful conditions in Syria or Ukraine.”

Millions of people have fled Syria since

the civil war began there in 2011. The UK has taken in about 20,000 Syrian refugees since 2015, according to the UN. Southwark Council has supported more than 260 people coming into the UK from Afghanistan since the situation there escalated last year, although the numbers who have been permanently housed are unclear. Since the Ukraine conflict began in February this year, 100 more people have been supported by the council through the homes for Ukraine scheme.

The process for rehousing Syrian refugees in the UK is complicated.

Peter John, the former Labour leader of the council, said in 2020 that the government works with the UN's high commission for refugees (UNHCR) to identify the people most in need - often women and children and people who

have suffered violence and torture, or who need medical care - who are living in refugee camps in the Middle East.

Local authorities like Southwark are allowed not to accept possible incoming refugees because of security concerns.

The council said when it first made the pledge in 2016 that it wanted to "ensure that we help to play our part in providing safe refuge to some of those most in need." But it warned that it could be hard to find the right houses because of the state of the affordable housing market in London.

According to a council report at the time, it would cost about £32,000 to accommodate a family for five years in private rented accommodation. With Home Office funding, the council would actually make about £61,000 from putting up a family in council home over the same period.

The Labour council said in December 2016 that it would house 25 Syrian households by the end of 2021 - but has admitted it has taken in just nine over the period. Another family is set to arrive in Southwark soon, said Stephanie Cryan last week, when she held the post of housing chef before the cabinet reshuffle.

Southwark said the housing crisis is to blame for not being able to meet the target. As we have reported, there

are more than 16,000 households on Southwark's waiting list.

Cllr Cryan said: "We have housed nine Syrian refugee households in Southwark, not individuals, with a further household arriving in the borough soon. This still falls short of our 2016 target of 25, but we can only provide housing as it becomes available. As we have been in the midst of a housing crisis in central London for many years, it can take time for the right kind of housing to suit the needs of families to become available.

We continue to welcome and support all those seeking refuge in Southwark, and to do our utmost to house them as quickly as we can.”

The borough's Liberal Democrat opposition criticised Labour for the missed target, comparing it to council home and cycle hangar targets.

Bike charity shop for refugees is set to open in Camberwell

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A charity bike shop that encourages refugees to take up cycling, in order to save money and stay healthy, is opening in Camberwell.

The Bike Project shop, opening on Saturday June 11 at 170 Camberwell Road, will sell refurbished bikes, clothes, accessories and offer repair services.

All the proceeds will help to get refugees cycling. They get free bikes, one-to-one cycling lessons, and the opportunity to be matched with a “bike buddy”.

An asylum seeker in the UK gets a cash allowance of £40.85 a week and The Bike Project founder says lots of this gets spent on public transport.

Jim Stein, founder and director of The Bike Project said: “We surveyed lots of asylum seekers to see what their transport needs were and they

were spending so much money on public transport every week, almost or over half their weekly allowance.

“And that was really eating into their ability to do anything, to provide food for themselves, and so many people expressed the need for a bike so they could get around London independently.”

‘Pedal Power’ is a scheme that teaches women how to ride a bike, while ‘Bike Buddies' helps to tackle social isolation by matching refugees with people they can cycle with.

According to the Bike Project, cycling can help provide access to vital services such as healthcare and legal aid, and improves mental and physical health.

Since its creation in 2013, the organisation has donated over 9,400 bikes, taught 400 women to cycle, and matched 100 refugees with cycle buddies.

Larry Trumpauskas, 14, won two gold medals at the National Cadets and Junior Nationals table tennis tournaments, seeing off formidable competition along the way - with notable scalps including last year's winner in the quarter-final of the Junior Nationals and this year's top seed in the final.

His victory was even sweeter for the fact that he was up against opponents up to four years older than him.

Larry, who practises two-three hours a day, six days a week, said: “I still can’t believe I won, I really wasn’t expecting it. But I had nothing to lose, so I just went for it!”

"She has completely integrated. She is like a daughter to us."

As part of 'Fostering Fortnight', the council is encouraging people to become foster carers, as there currently

aren't enough for the number of children in Southwark's care.

Foster carers, who get a monetary allowance from the council, can be any age over 21, of any religion, gender, or sexuality, and must be a legal tenant with a spare room.

Southwark particularly wants to meet potential foster carers living in the borough as this helps local children maintain important relationships with their families and friends, and stay at the same school. In February, the council announced it will set up three new children’s care homes to stop youngsters being sent to the north of England.

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk As part of 'Fostering Fortnight', Southwark Council is encouraging people to apply to become foster parents and the News spoke to one carer about her experiences.

Bryleigh, 24, from Greenwich, has been a foster carer for two years and currently looks after two teenage girls.

At 24, she is one of the younger foster carers working with Southwark Council. She loves doing it so much that she thinks she and her partner, Grace, 26, will "do it forever".

A social media marketing business owner, Bryleigh said: "I absolutely would recommend it. If you're the right person, caring for someone else is just life-changing. I’ll do it forever."

Asked what it's like being a foster carer at 24, she said: "My family would always say I’m not a typical 24-year-old.

I’m more like a 60-year-old!

"Going out isn’t my scene. I was a bit worried that my age would play into it and people might not take me seriously but I really haven’t experienced that and the borough takes my views on board."

She said her age was an advantage as it could make it easier to communicate with the young people in her care: "I think they talk to me more about things like boyfriend and girlfriends which they might not tell older people because they might not understand.

"I’m not frightened away by things they say or their reactions."

Bryleigh's mum started fostering children when Bryleigh was fifteen, and soon she and her sister were sharing their lives with boys brought into the family's care.

Cost of living Crisis: ‘I’d be dead without food bank’

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk "Without them I wouldn't be alive," said Alexandra Kaci, sitting in a side room off a food bank in a side road in Bermondsey.

Alexandra was referring to the three food banks she goes to regularly - Love North Southwark on the Slippers Place Estate, where she was speaking from, City Hope Church on Drummond Road and the Borough Food Co-operative on Borough High Street.

Alexandra, who is originally from Cork in Ireland and moved to Bermondsey in 2001 after a spell in Essex, started going to food banks after losing her carer job in 2020 amid the Covid-19 pandemic. She said she felt "ashamed" of going the first time.

"The first time I went, I was cringing and I felt horrible. I felt like oh my god, and I had to question myself. When I got myself together I said I could see myself going again.

"I had to get my logical thinking in place because if I don’t go what am I going to do?

I’m not working, there’s no one showering me with money. I’m not on state benefits."

Alexandra lives with her partner and seventeen-year-old son on Ann Moss Way. "My fella's on a good wage and yet we're still struggling," she said.

Kathy Heather, who runs Love North Southwark, said this week that numbers had gone up steeply in recent months, which is similar to what other local food bank managers have said. Inflation, food prices and energy bills have all gone up markedly, with worse likely to come later this year.

Alexandra said: "I don’t know how things are going to progress, but my God, you ain’t

seen nothing yet."

She said that although people might think they're safe now, she was worried for what the next year could bring.

"You might not get enough in your wages, you could be let go, or it could be a choice between paying your rent and eating. There’s no safety net. When you’re f*cked in the UK, you’re f*cked. No one don’t give a sh*t about you, I don’t care if you’re married, boyfriend, girlfriend, whatever.

"At the end of the day, you’re on you’re own - unless you’ve got a strong network, or people like Kathy, who are very rare.

"But a lot of people in Bermondsey, they

don’t have that luxury of going to their parents, or having a big network. They don’t have anything to fall back on. I’m just lucky Kathy’s here, otherwise I’d be f*cked.

I probably wouldn’t even be alive now.

"If she hasn’t got a heart of gold, I don’t know who has."

Alexandra said the Bermondsey she knew when she first arrived was "gone", and the sense of social isolation was hard.

"I only know about four or five people here now, everyone else has left, gone to Kent or wherever.

"I’ve travelled the world... I’ve been to Algeria. I’ll tell you one thing - they fare better than you and me. At least the

people there if you’re starving they’ll give you a loaf of bread. Here they don’t give a sh*t. They’d walk past you and ignore you and tell you you’re scum."

Alexandra, who is from the Irish traveller community, said she has applied for a job on a farm in Hertfordshire and was looking forward to getting out of London.

"I’m buggering off up there because I can’t sustain it in London," she said.

The worst is yet to come T he cost of living crisis” is not just a political phrase but something that is hitting people really hard. And the worrying thing is that, without government action, the worst is yet to come.

There are many elements squeezing people’s finances but the major problems are energy costs, food prices, petrol prices and general inflation which is seeing all prices increase.

Heating, hot water and gas or electric for cooking is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.

So with energy prices going up by 52% in February, people are finding that what would normally be a manageable bill is blowing a hole in their finances.

This leaves people less money for food which, in turn is soaring in price. At 9% inflation is at its highest level in 40 years. And that means less money for everything at a time when just about all costs are going through the roof.

The price increases on fuel have come from the worldwide increase in prices which have been driven even higher by the need to impose sanctions on Russian and stop using their gas supply. The increase in food costs have been driven by the rise in the costs of production, particularly energy and the loss of production from Ukraine.

While it’s not the Government’s fault that prices have risen, it is their responsibility to protect people from it.

Russia’s dreadful invasion of Ukraine has caused a spike in energy costs and it hits hardest at those who, as a result of this government’s policies, were already only just managing.

MP for Camberwell & Peckham weekly benefit payments. They should immediately reverse that cut in the face of the price increases. The Government trumpet the low unemployment levels but the grim reality is that for many people even having a job and working hard does not enable them to pay the bill, especially with the increase in National Insurance that the Government has imposed.

They should reverse that immediately.

It was shocking to hear government minister Rachel Maclean patronisingly lecture people to get a better job or work longer hours as if it’s their own fault that they can’t make ends meet.

The Government says that economic growth will sort the situation out. But there are two problems with this. Firstly, thanks to the Government’s failures in economic policy, the economy is shrinking, not growing, and is even teetering on the edge of recession. And secondly, even if the economy bucks the trend and starts

to grow, it will come too late. People who are struggling need help right now.

Labour has urged the Government to give help with bills to everyone but extra help to those on lowest incomes. They could do that immediately by putting a windfall levy on the windfall profits of the energy companies, whose profits have soared because of the price increases. It’s obscene that their profits are soaring while people struggle to pay the bills. They can afford to pay a windfall levy, as the energy companies themselves are now acknowledging.

The Government should do it now.

The fundamental problem is that thanks to the Government’s unfair policies, there are too many people who just can’t withstand these massive price increases.

We need immediate action to help them but for the future we need to get rid of this government and have instead a Labour government who will give everyone a fair chance for a decent standard of living.

I back the ULEZ expansion O ver 37,000 people in Southwark are being hit by the cut to Universal Credit and over 40% of local claimants are in work.

These figures came out in the same week that the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, made The Sunday Times ‘Rich List’ for the first time and the Government voted down calls to impose a windfall tax on the profits of oil and gas companies.

Those who are out of work or unable to work, are falling through the holes the Government has slashed in our safety net over the last twelve years. And like benefits, wages for those who are employed are also failing to keep up with inflation.

People in our borough want solutions to the cost of living crisis.

This is why I will continue to call on Government to take long-overdue measures, such as restoring the weekly uplift to Universal Credit and unfreezing and increasing housing benefits to keep up with steep rent rises. We also need Ministers to get a grip on in-work poverty and properly boost public sector pay, as our police officers and NHS workers have shamefully been left struggling to stay out of debt.

It is not just families and households who are grappling with soaring costs.

At last week’s Mayor’s Question Time, I raised the plight that businesses are facing with energy bills going through the roof. Coming out of the

Although I have viewed some excellent Body Worn Video encounters in which officers treat young people with respect, others are too robust and insensitive and they are causing tension.

Recent incidents involving the stop and search of the Team GB athlete Bianca Williams and the appalling treatment of Child Q at a school in Hackney are contributing to a feeling of frustration and anger in the community.

There is a real possibility of a backlash against the police over the summer.

Sayce Holmes-Lewis has recently shared videos of the stop and search of three of his Mentivity staff in Walworth Road, London SE17. Mentivity is one of the leading organisations in London that supports young people. Sayce and his staff have also been involved in working with the police to address issues around stop and search.

Understandably Sayce criticised the officers but the MPS cannot afford to alienate them.

The stop and search in Walworth Road should not have happened in the way that it did. There was no need to search the young men.

Neither was there any professional curiosity from the officers in the young men whose feelings and objections were disregarded.

Much more work needs to be undertaken by the MPS in relation to stop and search.

They can begin by listening to the concerns of the communities they serve. Some of us in independent advisory groups and community monitoring groups are here to work in partnership with them, to hopefully avoid any confrontation on our streets.

I hope I am wrong about the possibility of a backlash against the police, but I have a very strong feeling that a storm is coming.

A Lambeth councillor has urged Dulwich’s private schools to “get a grip” and take practical steps to reduce the congestion caused by parents’ cars.

If people must send their kids to private schools non-walking distance, there should be a transport arrangement so the roads aren't clogged with private cars.

GLA Member for Southwark & Lambeth pandemic, Government support for businesses has all but dried up.

The official numbers tell a stark story with over 16,000 companies based in England and Wales, filing for insolvency over the last financial year- a very concerning 52% rise when compared to 2020/2021.

Sadiq Khan told me that one his key focuses is to bring in more international tourism to boost our beleaguered retail, culture and hospitality sectors. City Hall’s London Business Hub has also been updated to provide support for struggling firms and to signpost them towards other sources of financial help.

Through his London Recovery Board, the Mayor has identified three mains asks of SMEs- business rates reform, discounted VAT and more direct grants. At this crucial juncture, the Treasury must start to listen to

the capital’s business community.

Finally, I want to draw the attention of Southwark residents to the launch of a new consultation into proposals to expand the ULEZ to cover the whole of Greater London. This is to build upon the huge success of the current zone in cleaning up London’s air- it already stretches the length of most of our borough.

It's important to underline that 82% of London motorists will not be affected by any new charges. However, I am backing calls for the Government to provide £180 million over the next three years to support a scrappage scheme to help businesses, charities and low-income Londoners to switch to cleaner and greener vehicles.

Daunting in-tray for new housing boss

H

ousing is probably the single most important issue in Southwark, as it is in the world more broadly. Living in secure, stable accommodation can be the basis for a happy, productive life. Without a roof over your head that you can rely on, things can quickly fall apart.

Sadly, homes in the private rented sector in London cannot always be relied upon. We saw an example of that just last week, with the news that Southwark Council had prosecuted a landlord for squeezing too many people into substandard accommodation in Walworth.

So social housing - homes owned by a local authority or housing association - is of huge importance. Socially rented homes should be more affordable for ordinary people and have a much more secure tenancy. The contrast goes some way to explaining the 16,000 households on the social housing waiting list in Southwark.

This means that there is a lot on the plate of Cllr Darren Merrill, Southwark’s new council housing boss, who came in this week after the recent local elections. The council has come under fire for its infilling and rooftop building programme, which it launched to tackle the waiting list.

At the same time, Southwark has been criticised for the opposite - not actually building enough, with just 166 homes completed from 2018-2022.

Empty homes are another worry, with the number of long-term vacant council properties skyrocketing over the past decade, driven largely by refurbishments to Bermondsey’s Maydew House, Walworth’s Aylesbury Estate, and the Ledbury Estate in Peckham.

Refurbishments to the existing housing stock should also not be forgotten - on a near-weekly basis, we hear stories of council homes with damp, mould and vermin problems - although the council has said the level of ‘decent’ homes is much improved in recent years.

And all that is not even to mention the climate emergency. Nearly 80 per cent of Southwark’s carbon emissions come from housing, so plans like fitting heat pumps on new social housing and encouraging developers to cut emissions are welcome. Questions remain about the green credentials of knocking down big developments like the Aylesbury, however.

£140k raised for research in memory of Ruby

The family and friends of a Herne Hill girl who died tragically young of leukaemia have raised £100,000 for possible life-saving research.

Ruby Fuller died in 2020 of leukaemia, aged just eighteen. The former Charter School North Dulwich head girl was dedicated to fighting injustice in all forms and wanted some of her savings to go towards research, her family said.

Now family, friends and supporters have raised more than £140,000 for the Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group through challenges like wing walks, cycle rides, sky dives, comedy nights and cook-alongs.

The money will fund a project looking at how the wrong genes are being instructed in patients with T-cell leukaemia, with researchers hoping that this new knowledge will go towards treatments that will stop cancer cells surviving.

Ruby's mother Emma said that Ruby would be "thrilled" with the new project.

"She asked us to donate some of her savings to research after she died and might have imagined £10,000 or so being donated in her name. We'd reached £100k within a year of setting up the fund, which is incredible.

“I'm really excited that we've been able to fund something relatively soon after setting up the fund, thanks to all the fundraising that's been done in Ruby's memory.

“It makes us so happy because it would make Ruby so proud to know that was being done in her memory.

Of course, like everyone who's been

horribly affected by cancer, I'm impatient to see new cures and better treatments.

“It's tremendously helpful to have

something to channel our grief into.

“Losing a child is so awful, and it impacts on lots of people. So many people wanted to help, but they weren't sure what to do - this gives them a great focus. And it's something that family and friends all over the world can get involved in."

The new project is being run by Dr Lisa Russell at Newcastle University's

centre for cancer.

Dr Russell said: “This project has been developing and growing for a while now. As a team, we are all really excited to get this underway so we can begin to start answering all the questions we have.

“Our hope is that the new knowledge we gain about how these enhancers communicate with the wrong genes means we are better prepared to think of ways to target these cells and

improve the outcome for patients with blood cancers.

“Enhancers are involved in many different blood cancers. The knowledge gained from this work has the potential to reach many different blood cancers and the people affected by these.

With this new knowledge, we hope to prevent cancer cells from surviving.”

Neglected Dulwich Village telephone box makes career switch Exclusive

A deteriorating Dulwich Village telephone box will get a new lease of life when it is fitted with a life-saving defibrillator next week.

The Dulwich Society, a local volunteer group that improves local amenities, bought the listed telephone box and have decided to fit it with a defibrillator.

They recently created an interactive Google map displaying where defibrillators were held locally and noticed “a hole” in the centre of the village.

Having recently bought the disused phone box after protracted negotiations with BT, they decided to fit it with a Rotaid AID defibrillator cabinet.

It was purchased for the princely sum of £1, but the Dulwich Society will now have to take on maintenance costs.

James Thompson, Dulwich Society chairman, said: “We bought a top-ofthe-range defibrillator which has really good functionality and anyone can use.”

The model they’ve chosen can detect if the patient requires defibrillation, and won’t administer a shock unless they really need it. It requires zero training and features a screen that flashes instructions to the user.

James said he hoped the device’s accessibility would ease people’s anxiety about using the device should the necessity arise.

The defibrillator will be fitted this Thursday 26 May and the telephone box has already had a lick of paint ahead of its big day.

The Dulwich Village telephone box is a K6 model, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935, the architect behind the Cambridge University Library and Liverpool Cathedral.

The design was commissioned to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V. James said it was fitting that the Dulwich Village telephone box’s rejuvenation should occur on another Jubilee year.

The Dulwich society had floated the idea of turning the telephone box into a community "micro library" but decided it could be put to better use.

Anupama Chandrasekhar’s The Father and the Assassin grew out of the question, what would the history of India have been like if Gandhi had not been assassinated, writes Elizabeth Carlin...

This led her to his assassin, Nathuram Godse, and an explanation for this act which changed that history forever. It is not a historical play but a fascinating and gripping account of the life of someone about whom very little is known. Indeed, few until recently would have been able to say what his name was. This play gives him back his name. At a time when Hindu nationalism is a factor in modernday India, this play has uncomfortable resonances.

The facts are that Nathuram Godse, was, for superstitious reasons, brought up a girl, and believed as a child to have the power to channel the goddess Durga.

A special child then but later, when insisting on being a boy, he failed to distinguish himself at school or be able to support his parents as expected. Ripe for radicalisation as a disaffected young man, he was influenced by Vinayak Savarkar’s party which advocated Hinduness and was violently anti-Muslim, and from there made two attempts on the life of Ghandi, the second being successful.

The play uses these facts to imagine the character of Godse to whom the audience is immediately drawn as he speaks directly through the 4th wall and invites participation in the story.

This is an extraordinary performance

by Shubham Saraf who is on stage throughout the play either leading, taking part in or observing the action. He seems a pleasant character, and talks in a relaxed fashion about how he would

prefer to be called a murderer than an assassin. He tells or shows us his story, which jumps about chronologically and links him to Gandhi (Paul Bazely), who initially is his hero in his espousal of nonviolent protest. His change of allegiance is explained by Gandhi’s suspension of the Non-Co-Operation Movement at the point when he wanted him to help with justice for his friend Mithun (Nadeem Islam). In a series of scenes showing his development, set against political commentary from a

disembodied radio voice, and political negotiation between Nehru, Jinna and Ghandi, leading up to Independence in 1947, the audience becomes intimately acquainted with him.

The director, Indhu Rubasingham, has collaborated frequently with the writer and this shows in the brilliance with which the performance moves through this complicated scenario. The set designed by Rajha Sikhara, a seemingly simple divided semicircle of sloping ramps and a flight of steps, makes full use

of the moving stage to become whatever is required to dramatise the action, the atmosphere being well-supported by the effective use of music (David Shrubsole).

Particularly memorable was the salt march rising in silhouette at the back of the stage, lit with white light and the transformation of refugees fleeing from either side during partition, sliding past each other and turning into a violent mob.

All the cast of 19 were excellent. The ensemble performed in beautifully

Probably descendants of Professor Henry Higgins himself, and if they hear me speak they will no doubt have wagers on who could pass me off as a Duke at the next big Society Ball. I am in the perfect place for Lerner & Loewe’s My Fair Lady, a story about how the poor workingclass can teach the rich upper-class how to be decent people.

As the English National Opera Orchestra get stuck into the overture with gusto, Drury Lane emerges from the shadows around a flower-seller on the stage. It is Eliza Doolittle trying to earn a living. She is warned about a stranger taking notes on what she is saying, so she confronts him for being a copper with nothing better to do. It is, though, the aforementioned Professor, a phoneticist studying the Common Cockney.

While in Covent Garden, Higgins strikes up a bet with his sidekick, the gentle Colonel Pickering, on whether he can transform Eliza into someone who can be passed off as a Duchess. When she hears of this she is not happy and berates Higgins. He responds by mocking her ‘kerbstone English’, and calls her a guttersnipe as he gets chased away by the market people who always look after

their own.

The next day, however, Eliza turns up at Higgins’ house asking if she can pay for elocution lessons to improve her employment chances. The Professor and Pickering convince her to stay as part of their experiment and be taught for free.

She moves in.

When her father, Alfred P. Doolittle finds this out he sees an opportunity to make money. He visits the house and tells the two men that he ‘can’t afford to have morals’ and sells Eliza for £50.

The voice and speech training commences until, by jove, she gets it, and they rejoice with The Rain in Spain Falls Mainly in the Plain.

Eliza’s first day out does not go well, although Freddy Eynsford-Hill takes a strong liking for her. He particularly enjoyed her tale about her father pouring gin down her mother’s throat. A meltdown ensues but she perseveres for the next challenge: The Embassy Ball.

When the evening arrives, Eliza looks every bit the Duchess in her ball gown and jewels, and is soon swept off her feet to dance with the Crown Prince of Transylvania,. When a language expert swears that she is descended from royalty the wager is won.

Higgins crows about his success; Pickering sings a song about it, and poor Eliza is sidelined as if she had no part in the change she has made to her life and her presence is now not needed. Higgins is shown be to be a selfish, uncaring man,

The play deals with serious matters but is not without humour in the presentations of Godse to the audience and in the characters from his childhood, Madhav (Ankur Bahl) and Vimala (Dinita Gohil) who both make convincing children.

Vimala keeps popping up in Godse’s narrative which annoys Godse and makes the audience laugh. More light relief is later provided by Ankur Bahl as the tailor to whom Godse is apprenticed and whose behaviour as he works there, demonstrates through several scenes his radicalisation.

It’s uncomfortable for a British audience to be faced with Indian colonial history and a different perspective from the hagiography of Attenborough’s Gandhi which the author saw each year at school on Independence Day. Her character, Godse wants his name to be remembered, not lost in the story of Gandhi who he, as they meet as dead men at the end, accuses of making him ‘ordinary’. This play works on many levels. Historically it gives a précis of the years leading up to partition and independence, it reminds us of Ghandi’s journey to becoming the Father of the Nation, but mainly it is the story of a confused young man who wants to feel he can be special as he had been brought up to expect. His final speech is a chilling call to arms, which was deeply disturbing.

After harsh words are exchanged, Eliza leaves with Freddy, who has kept his own flame for her burning bright.

Higgins seethes because she has left with Freddy and because he hasn’t got his own way. But the best he can muster up is a song saying he has become Accustomed To Her Face! That spoilt posh boy needs to up his game. He needs to show some humility to win that young girl’s heart but all he could do was say that he ‘couldn’t change’! He had just proved that people can change if they try hard enough, but he was not willing to put the effort in. And yet she turns up at his door once more. I was not convinced.

And all that was going on a grandiose theatre, with great sets, marvellous costumes (reflecting the Cecil Beaton originals), and, of course, a whole bunch of classic songs.

Amara Okereke was a magnificent Eliza, while Stephen K. Amos put in a fantastic turn as her father.

As the audience made their way out the Marchioness next to me asked how much I’d charge to teach her to talk like a Bermondsey Boy. I explained that it can’t be learnt but for £50 an hour I’d give it a go…

Southwark loSses at the Battle of Jutland

hen people consider the First World War, they generally think about the major land battles like the Somme and Passchendaele. The image of the ‘Tommy’ in the trench pervades our collective memory yet it should be remembered that not all off the action occurred on the Western Front, writes Neil Crossfield...

This was a world war, with men from Southwark fighting in combat operations all around the globe.

However, far less attention is given to an event which arguably had far greater impact than many of these land offensives, that being the Battle of Jutland which raged from 31 May until 1 June 1916. While campaigns on land could drag on for months, this naval conflict was over in 36 hours but was just as brutal as anything experienced in the trenches. At least 33 sailors who had known connections to Southwark were killed at Jutland but this figure may of course be higher.

Though Southwark is many miles from the sea, it has a long nautical tradition, perhaps due to its close association to the Thames and the docks. Over the years, countless young men joined the Royal Navy. Some joined for a sense of adventure while others no doubt enlisted as a means of escape from the poverty they endured in civilian life. While discipline could be tough, a career in the senior service would have had great appeal for many young men In the years preceding the First World War, the Royal Navy and the German Imperial Navy had been engaged in an arms race, each building progressively bigger and better armed warships.

The Battle of Jutland raged from 31 May until 1 June 1916. While campaigns on land could drag on for months, this naval conflict was over in 36 hours but was just as brutal as anything experienced in the trenches. economic position challenged the British Empire. Naval power would be a prerequisite for any country wishing to dominate and protect marine trade at sea.

Both sides believed that at some stage, a critical clash would be needed between the two powerful navies in which the battle for supremacy would finally be decided. That day came on 31 May 1916, when the German High Seas Fleet and the British Grand Fleet came face to face in the North Sea off Denmark’s Jutland Peninsula. This action would involve around 100,000 men and around 250 ships.

Ten of the Southwark men killed were Stokers. Shovelling tons of coal each day in arduous conditions deep within the boiler room, the stoker was integral to the operation of the ship. When the ships guns were fired, the vibration would fill the air with coal dust, making the conditions even more difficult. Far from being just a manual labourer, the role was highly skilled. During action stations, watertight doors would be shut, leaving the stokers closed up in the boiler room, deep within the bowels of the ship. Not only did this mean they had no idea what was going on in the battle above, it also meant that if the ship was hit by enemy fire, they had little chance of escape. When the HMS Queen Mary sunk with the loss of 1266 sailors, almost half of those killed were stokers.

11 of these were Chief Stokers, 99 were Leading Stokers, 38 were Petty Officer Stokers and 398 were ordinary stokers.

Of the 18 survivors, just 7 of these were from the stoker’s department.

Matthew Phillip Johnson from Walworth was a stoker on the battlecruiser HMS Queen Mary. Born in 1890 he lived with his family at County Terrace, New Kent Road. Johnson was baptised in St John the Evangelist in 1891 and later attended Harper Street school. On the 1911 census he is shown as a cyclist working for a newsagent, joining the Royal Navy in 1912. He married Emily Sarah Cragg at St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey in 1913.

The couple had twin boys born on 12 April 1914, unfortunately one of these, Walter John, died shortly after being baptised on 29 April and sadly, his brother, Matthew Phillip also died in July of that year. The young mother, after losing twin boys in such short succession, would have had to deal with the grief alone, as her husband was on active service on the recently launched Queen Mary. He saw action during the Battle of Heligoland Bight in August 1914 before being killed in action at Jutland. As a widow she received a pension of just 10 shillings a week.

HMS Indefatigable was a battlecruiser commissioned in 1911. It should be remembered that these warships were state of the art at the time they were in service and used the latest technologies available to the navy. However, the concept of the battle cruiser had serious design flaws which sadly became all too apparent during the Battle of Jutland.

These were fast ships with powerful guns whose job it was to hunt down less well armed ships and destroy them. In the interests of speed, these ships were lightly armoured, the idea being that

they could escape from more powerful ships if need be. At around 16:02 on the first afternoon, a salvo of shells from the Von der Tann crashed into the Indefatigable shortly followed by another. Eyewitnesses on HMS Malaya then reported seeing a massive explosion as the aft shell magazine blew up killing 1017 of the 1019 men on board. The two other battle cruisers of this type also blew up in similar circumstances: HMS Queen Mary with the loss of 1226 sailors and HMS Invincible losing a further 1026 men.

This prompted the now infamous quote from Admiral Beatty, “There’s something wrong with our bloody ships today!”

Four of those killed were only 17 years old. While officially the army had a minimum age limit of 18, the Royal Navy had long had much younger boys serving on their ships. Herbert Humphreys had been born in Walworth in March 1899 and had been baptised in St Peters church.

His father Theodore is shown on the 1911 census as having his own business selling second-hand packing cases and his mother Elizabeth was a collar turner.

His parents had been married for 27 years and his mother had given birth to 12 children but only six had survived. He had joined the navy in February 1915, completing his initial training on HMS Powerful before joining HMS Tipperary.

This was a brand-new ship, built for the Chilean navy but requisitioned when war had broken out. No doubt, serving on such a modern technologically advanced warship would have been an exciting experience for young Herbert, especially

as it became the flagship for the 4th Flotilla led by Captain Charles Wintour.

At around 23:30, ships had been sighted but Wintour did not know if they were friend or foe. As the groups of ships drew closer to each other, Wintour ordered a recognition signal to be raised, believing that they may be British warships. As soon as he had done this, his ships were illuminated by powerful searchlights. Inadvertently, Wintour had stumbled across the main German battle fleet including light cruisers and two battleships, who immediately started to pour fire into the Tipperary at close range. Other ships reported seeing the Tipperary’s bridge being hit and the whole ship looking like it was on fire. It did not sink immediately and some men were able to abandon ship at around 02:00 hours. Unfortunately, Herbert was not one of these, but one of 150 crewmates who died from a complement of 197. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

Another young man born in Walworth in 1898 was Thomas William Smith. He had joined the navy on the 5 June 1914 and trained as a boy signaller. While he had signed on for 12 years, his actual service time is shown on his Register of Service history as starting on 29th July 1916, the date of his 18th birthday. He was posted to HMS Queen Mary on the 15 May 1915. Much of the communication between ships at Jutland would have been made by visual signals: flag, semaphore or searchlight. By necessity, signallers like Smith would have to be standing on the

Matthew Phillip Johnson more lightly armoured upper decks to be seen by signallers on other ships, but this also meant they were exposed to enemy fire.

Three of the casualties were serving with either the Royal Marine Light Infantry or the Royal Marine Artillery.

William Alfred Collins was serving on HMS Calliope when it launched a torpedo attack on the German fleet. As per naval tradition, Royal Marines often operated one of the gun turrets on larger vessels and it is likely that Collins was doing this when the ship was shelled by three German Dreadnoughts, suffering severe damage. A shell had hit just as they had loaded a lyddite shell into the breech of the gun causing it to explode.

Somehow, the ship managed to escape and returned to base. In an oral history later recorded by the Imperial War Museum, a seaman who had served on the HMS Calliope recalled that when the turret exploded, ‘our Sergeant of Marines was gunlayer and all that remained of him was a hand, a piece of leg and his brains were splattered on the gun shield’. It is highly likely that Collins had been standing next to him when the shell hit.

Within a couple of days, news of the battle began to filter back to Britain.

Colson, Victor Henry Colson Britain observed badly damaged ships returning to port and military hospitals had to deal with hundreds of casualties, many badly burned. Though there was no social media in 1916, bad news could travel fast. Another ship, HMS Hampshire, had been present at the Battle of Jutland but had only limited involvement in the action. Several sailors from Southwark served on this ship so one can imagine that their families would have felt a sense of relief when they learned that the Hampshire had survived. However, their happiness would have been shattered just a few days later when the Hampshire was sunk by a mine off the Orkney Isles on 5 June. The ship was taking Lord Kitchener on a special diplomatic mission to Russia when it went down with the loss of 737 lives. Seven of these came from Southwark.

Though Jutland seems like distant history, perhaps it is not as distant as we think. As the fleets prepared for battle, one young officer prepared to go into action for the first time. His naval career had not started well, coming bottom of his class at the Royal Naval training school Dartmouth, yet he joined HMS Collingwood and served with distinction as a turret commander during the battle. At the time he went

by the name Prince Albert but later he became King George VI and father of our current Queen.

When the battle ended, the Germans had lost 11 ships with 2551 sailors killed and another 507 injured. British losses were greater with 14 ships sunk, 6,094 killed, 674 injured and 177 men becoming prisoners of war.

While tactically the Germans had the upper hand on the day, historians now regard Jutland as being a strategic victory for the Royal Navy. Though the loss of so many sailors was an awful blow, the loss of 14 ships was quite easily absorbed by the massive Royal Navy. The Grand Fleet was ready for action again within a few hours, but the German fleet put into port and would not come out to fight again during the rest of the war. This allowed the Royal Navy to retain control of the North Sea and its vital shipping routes. The naval blockade put massive economic pressure on Germany, and this was just as important to the Allied victory in the First World War as any military campaigns conducted on land. Though naval engagements were relatively few during the Great War, the prospect of a grisly and sudden death was very real for the sailors who faced each other at the Battle of Jutland.

Surrey and Sri Lanka shake on draw as youngsters impress Plus big name signs up for Vitality Blast

By Sport Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY PLAYED out an absorbing draw with the Sri Lanka Development XI at Guildford after a burst of five wickets in quick time had threatened to crack the game open for the hosts.

Beginning their second innings 184 in arrears, the Sri Lankans had progressed to 66 for 0 when Nathan Barnwell found Lasith Croospulle’s edge and Ryan Patel took a stunning one-handed catch at slip.

Brett Hutton, signed on a one-game loan deal from Nottinghamshire, then trapped Avishka Perera and Nuwanidu Fernando lbw in quick succession to leave the visitors 84 for 3 before Gus Atkinson continued his impressive all-round performance by nipping in with two wickets of his own, finding Nishan Madushka’s edge before dislodging the off bail of Santhush Gunathilake.

At 113 for 5, Surrey appeared to be on the victory charge but a defiant sixth-wicket partnership of 177 between Avishka Tharindu (103*) and the skipper Nipun Dananjaya Perera (81) took their side to safety.

to shake hands on a draw in which several Surrey youngsters seized their opportunity to shine, most notably Ben Geddes, who struck a sparkling maiden first-class century.

Earlier on Monday, Surrey had added 74 to their overnight score, Barnwell (22) and Dan Moriarty (29) each playing enterprising knocks, clearing the ropes five times between them, to take their first-innings total to 556.

Meanwhile, Surrey have signed West Indian superstar Kieron Pollard to play in the Vitality Blast.

The big-hitting Trinidadian joins compatriot Sunil Narine at The Kia Oval to play alongside Surrey’s domestic stars including new T20 captain Chris Jordan, Jason Roy and Sam Curran.

Pollard is returning from IPL and will be available for selection from the second game of the Vitality Blast that sees Surrey take on Gloucestershire at The Kia Oval on Tuesday, May 31.

Pollard is a name known to cricket fans all over the world having played over 100 T20 internationals, including two T20 World Cup wins, and 123 ODIs where he has hit more sixes than any other West Indian except Chris Gayle. He captained the West Indies white ball teams between 2019 and February 2022 when he retired from international

cricket.

Best known for his remarkable ball-striking ability, Pollard has won five IPL titles with the Mumbai Indians and sits in fifth place on the most sixes of all time in the competition.

Pollard’s handy medium pace bowling has also taken 97 international wickets and he averages 25 runs per wicket in domestic T20 cricket.

“It has been quite some time since I’ve played county cricket and I’m thrilled to be returning to the Vitality Blast competition in Surrey colours this year,” Pollard said.

“The Kia Oval is a special place to play, especially in front of a full house. This Surrey side is full of talent and should certainly be mounting a challenge for the title.

I hope that my experience will add a vital ingredient to the club’s success this year.”

Surrey director of cricket at Alec Stewart added: “We’re very pleased to bring Kieron to the club. He brings an incredible range of skills as well as experience at the very highest level of the sport. His allround ability will make a significant difference to the depth of the squad.

By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH SQUANDERED an impressive start in their AJ Fordham Surrey Championship Division 1 match against Spencer last weekend, going down to defeat by five wickets.

Dulwich were put in to bat, and their innings was very much a story of two halves. Ollie Steele and skipper Chris Purshouse saw off the opening attack of Michael Snedden, son of former

New Zealand quickie Martin, and Ollie Bocking. Their successors bowled tidily without making a breakthrough as the score advanced to 127 without loss after 31 overs.

But everything changed when skipper Gus Grant brought himself on for the 32nd over. He removed both openers in his first over, having Steele leg before for 44, made off 95 balls, and Purshouse caught for 71, off 96. Bocking returned to have James Schofield lbw in the next over. Ahmed Khan and Frankie Brown took the score to 141 before Brown fell to Bocking for 4, and Grant again took two wickets in the next over, removing Khan for 11 and Jon Lodwick next ball

with the score on 146. Dulwich had lost six wickets in seven overs for 19 runs.

South African overseas player Daniel Crowley then enjoyed stands of 22 for the seventh wicket with Michael Harms, who made 8, and a further 22 for the eighth with Simon Harwood before falling for 28 off 29 balls. Harwood, with 13 off 13 balls, and Salaar Waqar, with 10 off 11, then added an unbeaten 21 to take Dulwich to 211-8 at the end of their 50 overs.

Grant had taken the last two wickets to finish with 6-32 off his ten overs, while Bocking, with 2-43 off his ten, was the only other wicket taker.

the Spencer reply steadily, and had reached 27 in the seventh over when Harwood had De Cani caught behind by keeper Harms for 14. Pratt and Lloyd Paternott had advanced the score to 62 in the 18th over when Khan had Paternott caught on the boundary, also for 14.

This brought in Will Harris to join Pratt, and together they resisted seven bowlers while adding 98 in 18 overs for the third wicket. Both fell in successive overs. Harris was the first to go, skying a catch to the keeper off Crowley having made 44 off 64 balls, and Pratt fell to a stunning one-handed catch by Brown off Harwood for 69 off

101 balls.

With 50 runs still needed and two new batsmen at the crease Dulwich were still in with a chance, but the only other wicket to fall came through a direct hit by Brown with the score on 179. The sixth wicket pair saw their side home with 4.3 overs to spare.

Harwood was the best of the Dulwich bowlers, finishing with 2-28 off his ten overs.

For the third week running Dulwich have taken four points from the match and now stand in ninth place.

This weekend they travel to Valley End who have won two of their three matches and are currently fourth.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FORMER LYNN amateur Ellie Scotney defended her WBA Intercontinental super-bantamweight tittle with a dominant win over Maria Cecillia Roman at the O2 Arena in Greenwich last weekend.

Catford’s Scotney, 24, extended her professional record to 5-0 against 39-year-old Argentinian Roman (16-7-1).

Scotney moved closer to a world title shot later this year as the judges scored her bout against the former world champion 100-90, 99-91 and 99-91.

Scotney, who is trained by Shane McGuigan, was rarely threatened over the

ten rounds.

And Scotney showed she hasn’t forgotten her roots as her former club revealed she had helped them secure a new defibrillator.

Meanwhile, Bermondsey’s Chris Kongo has been urged to “make a statement” and put Conor Benn “on notice” when he fights Sebastian Formella next month.

Kongo faces Germany’s Formella at the Wembley Arena on June 11 on the undercard of Walworth’s Richard Riakporhe’s IBF cruiserweight title eliminator against Fabio Turchi.

“I think Chris has to make a statement,” promoter Ben Shalom told Sky Sports News. “This is definitely a really tough fight. No one has ever stopped Formella,

he’s very, very stubborn.

“It’s a huge opportunity to make a statement but it’s also a proper fight and Chris is going to need to be at his best. But if he can do something that no one’s done before and stop him, it will show that Chris really is at that level that we believe he is.

“We always felt that with a better environment he could have a much better chance at a high level. I think Formella is the perfect opponent for him but he’s a huge test and he needs to prove that he can compete at the very top of the division.

“I think it would put Conor Benn on notice.”

“Sam is centrally-contracted by the ECB so England are ultimately responsible for the detail of his return to bowling fitness work,” said Batty. “But despite not bowling [against Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire] he is doing his overs behind closed doors and that continues to go well.

that Sam is still a young player, and sometimes it’s hard to think he’s only 23. And the real positive for him at the moment is that he has been able to concentrate more on his batting and, during these early-season championship matches, to approach them mainly as a top-six batter.

“He’s already shown, in his first three games of the season, just what a good player he is by the manner in which he has scored his runs. Sam is also the sort of cricketer who always wants to get better, be that with bat or ball, and I think he’s still improving all the time.”

Surrey are top of Division One under Batty, who took over as head coach from Vikram Solanki during the winter.

Shalom added: “I think unfortunately we’ve not really seen Conor in any domestic fights so far, and I think that’s what he’s crying out for.

“We’re seeing it now with Josh Buatsi and Craig Richards, we’ve seen it with Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Williams and Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall, domestic fights are what the fans want to see.

“I think that’s what takes you up another level in terms of respect and in terms of notoriety and I think at some point Conor should be looking at fighting the British guys, and hopefully Chris Kongo is going to be in the mix after this fight.

“He’s got the talent to do it and it definitely puts him right up there if he can dispatch Formella.”

“By completing our survey, we will be able to fully understand where and how we can address under-representation and ensure that we encourage all of our local communities to get involved in football, whether as a fan, a player, a coach, a steward or to join the club’s workforce.”

Mills added: “I’m really proud and honoured to have been appointed Dulwich Hamlets first-ever EDI officer.

“This is a huge step forward to embedding inclusion throughout the entire football club and I can’t wait to continue the great work that has already started.

“This is going to be a fantastic journey for the football club and I’m humbled that I will be a part of it.”

Curran on track despite being ruled out by England

By Mark Baldwin sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY HEAD coach Gareth Batty has confirmed that Sam Curran’s return to full bowling fitness is on track despite the England all-rounder’s limited workload.

Curran returned last month after six months out with a stress fracture of the back.

Curran had ten overs on the opening day of Surrey’s LV= Insurance County Championship match against Somerset at the Kia Oval on April 21, but did not bowl in the subsequent matches Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire.

Victories against Hampshire and Somerset were gained despite the loss to injury in those games of, respectively, Kemar Roach and James Taylor, while Ben Foakes, Jamie Smith and Ollie Pope have all been forced to miss a match through injury or illness.

Surrey’s strength in depth, though, has still already allowed them to rotate quick bowlers Jamie Overton and Reece Topley from certain fixtures while the latest addition to their seam battery, Dan Worrall, has impressed everyone at The Kia Oval since arriving at the club in mid-April.

Worrall, a 30-year-old Australian with three one-day international caps, has previous county experience from 2018 and 2021 with Gloucestershire and, as a British passport holder, is

now a home-registered player.

After taking five wickets in a crushing innings win against Northamptonshire, Worrall said: “This is a great club to be a part of and everyone has been so welcoming to me and my family. I’ve signed for three years but let’s hope I can be here longer than that.

“I am excited to be here and I know what my role is in what is a terrific bowling attack. My time at Gloucestershire gave me valuable experience of English conditions and what I most learned there was the need to be adaptable on different pitches.

“Sometimes it swings more and sometimes it seams more, so you have to adapt your bowling to whatever is in front of you.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL ARE set to continue with their default five-man defence next season – and Scott Malone has given an insight into the intense demands of the wing-back role.

The Lions moved to five at the back soon after the appointment of Gary Rowett in October 2019, and it paid immediate dividends as the side ended their winless away run with a 1-0 victory at Swansea City, Rowett’s fourth game in charge. It was the first game they played 5-2-3 under Rowett.

Millwall’s wing-backs on that November day were Mahlon Romeo and Murray Wallace as Jed Wallace’s brilliant direct free-kick secured the win.

Rowett signed Malone on a season-loan loan from former club Derby County in August 2020 specifically to play left wingback, with Murray Wallace dropping back into a three-man defence.

Romeo had his place taken by Danny McNamara in January 2021. McNamara, 23, and Malone, 31, were the first-choice wing-backs last season.

McNamara got his first two goals for Millwall in the 4-1 win against Barnsley in April, the second assisted by Malone with a cross from the left to the back post,

Lions Championship rivals in talks with star man

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL’S CHAMPIONSHIP rivals West Bromwich Albion are in talks to sign Jed Wallace, according to a report.

Wallace, 28, is out of contract at the end of June. The former Portsmouth and Wolves attacker was offered a new deal last summer and speculation intensified over his future in January when Nottingham Forest bid for him and Turkish club Besiktas were also credited with an interest.

Millwall turned down the approaches from Forest and while the interest from

Besiktas was with foundation, there were no further developments.

Wallace has notched up double-figures in assists in the last three seasons when he has also scored 27 goals, making him one of the league’s most in-demand players.

Wallace ignored speculation over his future plans throughout the season to drive the Lions towards a play-off challenge all the way until the final day.

But now Sun journalist Alan Nixon says Steve Bruce’s Baggies want to take him to The Hawthorns on a free transfer.

Wallace has made 260 appearances and scored 43 goals for the Lions across three spells, two on loan from Wolves before a permanent transfer in 2017.

Malone has scored nine goals in the last two seasons, making him Millwall’s highest-scoring defender in that time.

Malone explained how difficult it is to be defending as part of a back five in one moment, and seconds later trying to make it to the opponents’ back post to get on the end of crosses.

“I don’t think you can conserve energy, I just think you have to go for it,” Malone said. “With that role, your body gets accustomed to doing it.

“I think it would be hard for someone who doesn’t play there to go and play there for 90 minutes. You will notice the difference.

“I’d say it’s a very niche role, if you like.

Some parts of it you could say are easier than other positions, but I think physically it is one of the most demanding.

“Especially as you have to do both.

You’re expected to defend and then when we attack you’re expected to be on the back post [when a cross comes in from the other side]. You can do it both ways, you don’t have to make the back post every time.”

One of Malone’s biggest tests last season was against Huddersfield’s Sorba Thomas. The Terriers’ right wing-back came out on top in their first duel and provided the assist for the only goal scored by Jonathan Hogg, though that

was from a corner.

Malone wasn’t happy with how the battle went and vowed it wouldn’t happen again. In the return game, Malone dominated as the Lions ended Huddersfield’s seventeen-game unbeaten run at The Den with a 2-0 victory.

“Nowadays you’re seeing more of a 3-52, a 3-4-3, teams are doing it in all kinds of different variations,” Malone said.

“What I’ve found, especially [last season], everyone is playing with a back three. So then more often than not you’re one-vone. You have to impose yourself on the other player, you almost have to take the legs away from him.

“A bit like Huddersfield at home with Sorba Thomas. If you don’t run the other way they’re just going to keep attacking you so it’s a bit cat-and-mouse.

“Yes [it was a motivation against Thomas]. I’d like to think not many get the better of me physically over the 90 minutes, but that was one. It was one of the couple of times I didn’t feel at my best and he did get the better of me.

“It was a little bit of a motivation, it was like, ‘you won’t do that to me again. You’ve done it once, you’re not doing it twice.’

“I think we’re high [in distance covered] but I wouldn’t say we’re the highest. It’s more high-speed running. The highspeed running and the sprinting are probably the two that we’re top at.

“I’m not too sure about overall distance.

It would be high but then you have to get down to what the game is like, whether you have the ball, whether it’s a counterattacking game.”

Malone praised Murray Wallace – who won the Lions’ Millwall Supporters’ Club player of the year award – for his displays on that left side.

Malone said: “He’s been great. It’s almost like I can half, not cheat, but I know he’s behind me. His performances this season have been outstanding, game after game.

“He had a couple of [injury] issues but he just ploughed on through that. He just churns out performances. It’s ridiculous, to be fair, what he does. Even on the ball as well he brings calmness.

“He definitely helps me, he helps me get further up the pitch.”

Relief and heartbreak as Millwall confirm list

MILLWALL 31 Sean O’Brien was one of the best performers in the Professional Development Squad in the past two seasons

Released under-23s aim to find new clubs

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL CONFIRMED their retained list late last week – with the only releases that surprised some Lions fans among the under-23s.

As expected, club skipper Alex Pearce and winger Connor Mahoney are not being offered new contracts.

Pearce, 33, leaves after three-anda-half seasons, 81 appearances and one goal. Mahoney, 25, spent three seasons with the Lions, making 68 appearances and scoring five goals.

There is always going to be inevitable heartbreak at this time of the year for some of the young players hoping to be offered new deals.

The disappointed players this summer are Sean O’Brien, Junior

Tiensia, Kai Garande, Dan Moss and Jayden Davis.

Moss, 21, has already embarked on the next phase of his career after signing a two-year deal with National League Woking.

His departure surprised some, after he enjoyed a positive first half of the season at Yeovil Town before moving to Leyton Orient, though he only made four appearances in League Two. O’Brien, 20, had been one of the best performers in the Professional Development Squad in the last two seasons but is now looking for another club. He spent a short time on loan at fifth-tier Bromley last season.

Forward Davis, 20, played five times for National League King’s Lynn Town, including once in the FA Cup, and scored his first goal in senior football in a promising spell.

Although Junior Tiensia had made the first-team bench a number of times, the decision not to offer him new terms is perhaps less of a surprise. Tiensia, 21, made thirteen appearances on loan at Dover Athletic last season before moving to Dartford.

But his time there ended without an appearance after he suffered a serious hamstring injury from which he is still recovering.

Millwall confirmed they had taken up options to extend the contracts of goalkeepers Jordan Gillmore, Ryan Sandford and Joe Wright, defenders Arthur Penney and Besart Topalloj, midfielder Alfie Allen, attackers Nana Boateng, Tyrese Briscoe, Abdul Abdulmalik and Isaac Olaofe, and utility man Sebastian Drozd.

Lions youngster to join Woking

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DAN MOSS is set to join Woking when his contract with Millwall expires at the end of June.

Moss, 21, was one of a number of players released when the Lions confirmed their retained list last week.

The Burnley-born defender spent the first half of last season on loan with National League Yeovil Town.

That successful spell led to another loan, this time to League Two with Kenny Jackett’s Leyton Orient. But Jackett was sacked in February and Moss struggled for regular action, playing just four times after making 20

league appearances and three in the FA Cup for the Glovers.

Woking, who finished fifteenth in National League last season, are managed by Darren Sarll, who signed Moss for Yeovil.

“Daniel has been a very important target from day one,” Sarll said on Woking’s official website. “When a team concedes 61 goals in a season it is simple to recognise that improving the defensive unit of the squad is fundamental to any plan moving forward.

“Daniel is fiercely competitive, and he is exactly the type of player that the supporters will connect with through his determination and aggression. He’s

also a great age to still develop and improve and it’s another one that has two years with us.

“I’m very happy to have him within our ranks.”

Dan Moss is being released this summer

Nino Adom-Malaki were offered their first professional deals.

Ryan Hammond, Ramez Hefzalla and Bobby Dailly are being released.

The Lions said: “The club would like to place on record its gratitude to all departing for their hard work and professionalism throughout their time at Millwall and wish them the best of luck in their future careers.”

In Pearce and Daniel Ballard, who returned to Arsenal following the end of his loan spell, boss Gary Rowett has lost two influential defenders. Pearce more for the way he controlled the dressing room and Ballard for his excellent performances on the pitch.

Alex Mitchell, who spent last season on loan at Leyton Orient, will be given a chance in pre-season but the Lions are set to try to bring in a centre-back this summer. Mitchell is only 20 and

would benefit more from another season out on loan rather than the odd appearance for the first team.

Millwall would like to ensure his development continues in an upward curve after loans in National League and then League Two by sending him to a League One club.

Mahoney’s departure creates less of a gap than those of Pearce and Ballard.

There are already a number of young players jostling for a first-team place in attack, whether that’s a front three or two with a forward in behind, including Tyler Burey, Nana Boateng and Zak Lovelace, though the latter has yet to sign a professional deal.

Meanwhile, Luke Freeman, who played just thirteen minutes for Millwall on loan in the second half of last season, has been released by Sheffield United.

Derby County defender linked with Den transfer

Right-sided defender Byrne, 29, will be available on a free transfer when his contract runs out at the end of June.

And Football Insider claim that the Lions, along with Stoke City and Preston, want to sign Byrne from the relegated Rams.

Despite Wayne Rooney’s Derby

dropping into the third tier after having 21 points deducted for financial irregularities, Byrne had a positive season and was voted the players’ player of the year.

Byrne joined Derby from Wigan for an undisclosed fee in September 2020 and has made 82 league appearances for the Rams, 80 of them starts.

Danny McNamara and Mahlon Romeo are Millwall’s two current natural right-sided defenders, but the latter is expected to leave this summer.

Scottish giants step up pursuit of starlet

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GLASGOW RANGERS have reportedly stepped up their interest in signing Zak Lovelace from Millwall.

Lovelace, 16, has yet to sign a professional contract with the Lions who would be due compensation if the attacker leaves this summer.

The Daily Record claimed this week

that Scottish Cup winners Rangers were “poised to hit the accelerator” in their pursuit of Lovelace.

The report says Millwall would be due around £200,000 in compensation compared to more than £1million were Lovelace to move to another club in England.

Millwall have been plundered for talent in recent years. Manchester City signed Samuel Edozie, who was then sixteen, and Darko Gyabi,

then fourteen, in deals that could be worth over £3million to the Lions.

But that sum is a fraction of the potential transfer fees Millwall could have received had they stayed with the club and progressed to the first team.

Lovelace became Millwall’s secondyoungest player when he made his debut against Coventry as a fifteenyear-old last December.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett has stressed it’s “crucial” that the Lions try to sign players before the start of pre-season training.

Millwall were quickly out of the recruitment blocks last summer, bringing in five players – George Long, Scott Malone, George Saville, Daniel Ballard and Benik Afobe – before they went to their training camp in Edinburgh.

The sixth signing of last summer, Sheyi Ojo, arrived on August 31.

Repeating that percentage could be trickier this time around as pre-season will start a week or so earlier due to the Championship campaign kicking off at the end of July.

Millwall could be looking for at least the same number of acquisitions in the next transfer window, a number that also depends on potential exits including Jed Wallace.

“It’s crucial that we get players in early,” Rowett said.

“As a manager you need time to work with those players and get them up to speed on how we want to play.

“The fact that there is going to be a bit of change within the playing squad means that time to settle those players in will be really important.

“We’ll all work incredibly hard to try to achieve that.”

One of Rowett’s aims this summer is to sign younger players with future add-on value and to lower the average age of the squad, though he acknowledges that is not easy.

“We’ve tried to do that with the young players here and bringing them through,” Rowett said. “The likes of Danny [McNamara], Billy [Mitchell], Tyler [Burey] all started games together and certainly showed that there is a route through for younger players to go in and perform and help make our team better and more athletic.

“The aim before every summer, and it’s the same for most clubs, most clubs want to try to sign younger players with the potential to be real assets to the team both financially in the future and on the pitch.

“But those players cost money. They cost a lot more money than an experienced player who’s maybe not quite had the season they wanted.

“We’ll set off to do that, we want to try to do that.

I’m more concerned about making the team better than about how old players are within that.

“If there’s a Premier League player that’s got incredible quality and he’s 28 then we’re not going to not sign him because he isn’t 23, 24.

“On the whole our plan would be to lower the age a little bit. We’ve got a good core of experienced players so we’ll work hard to try to do that.”
