1. London Bridge and West Bermondsey 417 crimes recorded

Stretching from London Bridge to the Old Kent Road roundabout, London Bridge and West Bermondsey saw the most criminality in March, with a staggering 417 crimes reported.

Anti-social behaviour was the most commonly reported crime, with police responding to 82 incidents.

There were also 76 thefts, 57 violent and sexual offences, and 48 thefts from the person.

Affluent Borough and Bankside was the third most crimeridden area in the borough, with its 341 reported crimes, due in large part to the high prevalence of theft.

There were an astonishing 87 incidents of theft as well as 52 thefts from the person in March.

Anti-social behaviour troubled police on 82 separate occasions, while there were 44 violent and sexual offences, and 18 drug-related crimes.

6. South Bermondsey - 248 crimes recorded

Just edging itself into sixth place was South Bermondsey, which recorded 248 crimes throughout March.

There were 80 incidents of anti-social behaviour, 57 violent and sexual offences, and 17 thefts.

The area also saw a concerning number of arson and criminal damage incidents, with a notable 20 recorded.

2. Rye Lane - 353 crimes recorded

Rye Lane came in second, with March's crime almost doubling compared to February.

Once again, anti-social behaviour came out on top, with Rye Lane having Southwark's highest number of such incidents - 132. There were also 56 violent and sexual offences, 47 thefts, and 29 incidents of vehicle crime.

There were 84 cases of anti-social behaviour, 49 violent and sexual offences, 24 incidents of theft and 19 public order offences.

Home to the bustling Walworth Road, North Walworth has the crime to match its high population density, with 285 recorded incidents.

Anti-social behaviour was, expectedly, the most prevalent offence, with police responding to 114 incidents in March alone.

There were also 51 violent and sexual offences, 26 incidents of theft, and another 26 cases of theft from the person.

5. Rotherhithe - 254 crimes recorded

With 254 crimes reported, Rotherhithe ran a close fourth but ultimately comes fifth in this list.

Wallball: A UK FIRST AND TOTALLY FREE Free gym opening up in Rotherhithe

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk "This is ground-breaking," said New Yorker Jay Sanchez, looking at groups of school children hitting a small ball against a colourful wall on the side of Surrey Quays shopping centre last week.

Mr Sanchez has flown into London to promote wallball, a burgeoning sport in the UK that aims to make use of small corners of cities to get people active.

As part of this effort, he and other top wallball players visited Surrey Quays, where developer British Land has launched what it calls the UK's first multi-court outdoor wallball venue, which is free to use. "What's important is that they're getting the kids involved

from a very early age," said Mr Sanchez, who will also be taking part in a tournament in west London.

Wallball is simple - you hit the ball with your hand against the wall. The ball can only bounce once before your opponent hits it back. Games usually last fifteen minutes.

The idea is to get people active in a low-stakes, sociable way. The two courts are at the shopping centre, which means that anyone can stop and have a casual game on their way to or from a shopping trip.

Southwark has some of the highest obesity rates in the country. Some 43 per cent of children in Year 6 were overweight or obese in 2020, alongside 58 per cent of adults in the borough.

Daniel Grant, an NHS doctor who

founded UK wallball and was at the Surrey Quays launch on Thursday, said: "We cannot wait to see people of all shapes and sizes and from all backgrounds get going on these amazing courts. They’ve been designed with the local community at heart and we’re looking forward to seeing how people use the area as an active and social space."

This is the second wallball court in Southwark - the first was opened last April in Marlborough Sports Gardens near London Bridge.

The courts are free to use from Thursday.

People can bring their own balls to play with, or buy one from a nearby vending machine for £2.

The gym, which will have facilities including a squat rack, chest press, dumb-bells, kettlebells and a punching bag is opening up on Tuesday, May 24 at the RJ4All community centre on Plough Way. "RJ4All Sports aims to restore power abuse through sports, and this gym is the first step in addressing persistent health inequalities in our area. We simply do not believe that true community cohesion and restorative justice can be achieved if we do not approach them in a holistic manner. " The gym is funded by Canada Water Dockside developers Art-Invest through its community sports fund with Decathlon, as well as Southwark Council and housing association Clarion.

London's most lovable cabbie, who tragically died after 'collision' with a moped while walking near his home in Kennington Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Cabbies have been paying tribute to “Gorgeous George”, who revolutionised the London taxi industry, and did rides until he fell victim to a 'collision' with a moped while walking near his home on Kennington Lane last Thursday, May 12.

Eighty-two-year-old George Vyse, who was born in New Cross and lived in Kennington most of his life, died on Sunday, May 15.

George was rushed to hospital but passed away around 6pm, surrounded by loved ones, after the decision was made to turn off his life support machine.

Today detectives renewed appeals for witnesses to the incident to come forward. They said anyone they are yet to speak to, or anyone with dashcam footage, who might have caught what happened last Thursday, at the junction of Kennington Lane and Kenington Road at around 8.50am, should call them on 020 8285 1574.

George worked at a Fleet Street printers and the Covent Garden Flower Market, before falling in love with the London taxi trade, which would occupy him for over 40 years.

In a notoriously insular industry, George was a dedicated union man, a member of the United Cabbies Group and London Cab Drivers Club (LCDC).

LCDC head Grant Davis told the News that every taxi driver who switches his radio on at the start of a shift need whisper thanks to George, who fought to have them allowed in London cabs in 1984.

The police, who were regulating the taxis in London at the time, tried to stop cabbies from having them, but Gorgeous George was having none of it.

they change it and they did, but they only allowed one speaker, you need a radio. A bit of music or blast of the news between jobs is every cabbie's right. He was like a hero in the cab trade."

Known as a great talker, he also ensured sunroofs were allowed in taxis, lifesavers for generations of cabbies working on a hot day.

He was a constant thorn in the side of the Metropolitan Police, then overseers of the Public Carriage Office (PCO), tirelessly defending his colleagues’ rights and continued to do so when

Transport for London took over in 2000.

Always immaculately turned out, and forever disappointed by the sight of a cabbie in a tracksuit, George was known for his beautiful taxis.

Grant Davis recounted the time he bought a brand new motor with one mile on the clock, only to have it stripped and painted metallic jaguar green.

His mahogany dashboards, leather interiors and crisscrossed Bentley-style upholstery were fitting for a man for whom, according to Grant, “his taxi was part of him”.

Mitchell Ruff even remembers seeing him parked under a bridge one rainy afternoon. Thinking he'd broken down, he pulled over to help, only to find George was sheltering his beloved taxi from the drizzle.

But the chatty, friendly father was a

grafter too, never afraid to work 70 plus hour weeks to provide for his family.

In later years, he briefly moved to Bexleyheath with his wife, Anna, and daughter, Gina, only to find he missed the hustle and bustle of the city, and duly moved back to Kennington.

A wreath will be laid at the door of George’s Southwark office, with colleagues, friends and families invited to join in a minute’s silence.

A procession of taxis is also planned for George’s funeral, to lead the legend to his final resting place.

Mitchell Ruff said the much-loved George, who will be sorely missed by all those who knew him, will always be remembered for his sign off to nearly every conversation. He said it was a phrase that he was so well known for that Mitchell even got it printed for George to have on business cards that he'd give out from his little Southwark Street office. It was: “Okay son, take care, God bless”.

'organised crime group' that sold cannabis sweets on Snapchat and Instagram jailed

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Three members of what police called 'an organised crime group' were sentenced last Thursday, May 12, for 'brazenly' selling sweets containing cannabis on social media.

Reo Brandon Mangal, 34, of Nazareth Gardens, Peckham and Olivia Butler, 24, of Evan Cook Close, Peckham were sentenced alongside 35-year-old Ceroan Mangal, of Pemberton Gardens, Archway, at Wood Green Crown Court.

Detective Inspector Darren Jones, who leads a dedicated team of officers investigating drug offences in Camden and Islington, said: "This group brazenly thought they could get away with selling dangerous substances in plain sight on social media. The hard work of our officers has put a stop to their criminality and closed a significant supply chain.

"The impact of these substances should not be underestimated - they can cause an adverse reaction. Edibles are typically stronger than other cannabis products and it's impossible for the customer to know what ingredients have been included.”

The investigation began when police caught Butler driving a car, without insurance, loaded with boxes of sweets and drinks.

Tests confirmed they contained THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.

Butler denied knowing what was in the boxes and told officers she was delivering them to someone on behalf of a friend.

Officers seized the Peckham woman’s phone and were able to link coconspirators Reo Mangal and Ceroan Mangal, by analysing 114,629 text messages and 67,964 photos stored on

the device.

Officers discovered the group were using Snapchat and Instagram to sell to customers across the UK. The edibles were sent by post, with customers paying into three bank accounts linked to the group.

After a complex and lengthy investigation, officers raided three addresses on October 8 2021 and the

suspects were arrested.

Only half the residents to be ejected from Marie Curie House have found new homes Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Just half the households forced to move out of their Camberwell housing block due to fire safety problems have found new homes, according to the Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (TRA) chair.

In a meeting described as a "bolt out of the blue", in May 2021, the council told residents that Marie Curie House, Sceaux Gardens, SE5 would be emptied.

A year on, roughly half of the households to be ejected have been rehoused, with the rest desperately scouring Southwark Homesearch for new properties.

All have been given band one priority but the lack of available housing in the borough has slowed the search.

Mike Edge, Sceaux Gardens TRA chair, said: “It gets rather dispiriting looking on Homesearch every day because there’s nothing suitable in there."

TRA announced that 43 per cent of flats were still occupied, casting doubt on the council's original plans to complete works

by September 2023.

To speed up the process, Mr Edge said he asked the council to buy a private block to house ejected tenants and leaseholders, during a cabinet meeting on 8 March 2022. The council reportedly noted his request, but Mr Edge concedes that it's unlikely to ever be fulfilled.

In 2009, Marie Curie House's sister block, Lakanal House, set ablaze due to fire safety defects, killing six and injuring twenty. Marie Curie House residents were shocked to find out, eleven years later, that their own homes had the same issues.

Mr Edge expressed concern that it took so long for the authorities to address the safety of Marie Curie House.

Now, Andrea White, managing director at A W Fire Ltd, is producing an independent report into the fire safety works undertaken by the council at Marie Curie House after the 2009 Lakanal fire.

The council was approached for comment.

The grandparents of a teenage girl with a severe and rare medical condition have thanked Millwall fans who are taking on an unusual challenge to support the charity that looks after their daughter.

Cameron, 15, has an extremely rare chromosomal condition which limits her speech, mobility, and eyesight - and is looked after at home by staff from Demelza Hospice.

Millwall fans are fundraising for the hospice through a September 'stair climb' going up and down the stairs at the Den - as part of a whole year of support the club is giving the charity in 2022, with the aim of raising £55,000.

David and Denise, Cameron's grandparents and legal guardians, said the club's support "means the absolute world" to them.

David said: “Denise and I are lifelong Millwall FC fans, so we’re familiar with the old chant ‘No one likes us, we don’t care’; but the truth is, Millwall care more than anyone. The club's support for Demelza opening up the Den for the Millwall Stair Climb and their pledge to help raise £50k this year - means the absolute world to us because it means Demelza can continue to provide vital support and services to us, and other families like ours.”

The September 25 stair climb has four levels of difficulty - the lower tier of the Den (614 stairs), both tiers (1868 stairs), double both tiers (3736 stairs) or unlimited laps around the stadium.

‘Peckham princess’ starts fundraiser to save her ‘Bando Belly’ destroyed in blaze Nazli Ramadan

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham restaurant owner, who appeared on the ITV 2 show ‘Peckham’s Finest’, has started a fundraiser to save her restaurant, which was destroyed in a fire.

South London born-and-bred Nazli Ramadan, 29, who opened Bando Belly at Peckham Levels, Rye Lane, in January 2021, awoke last Wednesday to dozens of missed calls.

To her horror, she was told her restaurant had caught ablaze in the early hours of the morning on Wednesday, May 11. A report will establish the cause of the fire.

Nazli, also known as Naz, said: “The site manager at Peckham Levels showed me the doorway of the kitchen over

FaceTime and it was completely black and dark.

“I just threw my phone. I couldn’t believe this was actually happening.

I poured my heart and soul into that place.”

Naz, who was born in Lewisham Hospital and spent her childhood in and around Peckham, has started a GoFundMe with a £10,000 target.

Still awaiting the fire report, she doesn’t know the financial cost of the blaze yet, but knows she’ll need money to get Bando Belly back on its feet.

For now, donated cash will help to pay staff, including one employee who is pregnant, while the restaurant works out its next move.

The money could also be used to organise more fundraising events over the coming weeks, something which she has already discussed with the Prince of Peckham pub and Deeper into Movies

Cinema, Dalston, which both kindly reached out.

Naz, formerly the Deputy Young Mayor of Lewisham, has already raised over £1,500. She said: “The support I’ve received from my friends and family has been sensational and it continues to be amazing.

“I’ve always been a community person and I’ve always been about my people so I have a lot of people that support me.”

Naz started Bando Belly having already gained experience in the restaurant business from working at her family’s restaurant, Kitchen 41, on Queens Road.

Bando Belly serves soul fusion food including burgers, tacos, steaks and salads. Naz said: “It was pretty hard the first year through Covid. There were lots of trials and tribulations.

“You’re constantly learning and we were just getting to a place where it was about to go to the next stage.

“We had this sick little team - my mum was helping out with front of house. It felt like the business was starting to flow properly.”

But Naz is adamant the fire won't determine her, or the business's future: "I'm staying in Peckham. I am the Peckham princess. The Peckham princess can’t leave Peckham."

Naz plans to salvage surviving stock from the restaurant, and give it out to local food banks.

Tree for Jimi

Jimi's parents Olusankami and Michael planted the cherry tree in Spa Gardens along with family and friends, and local MP Neil Coyle. The park was round the corner from the family home on the Neckinger Estate. " Olusankami said: "We always go there.

That is his favourite. It's Jimi’s favourite park - he loved it.

Jimi, 20, has been hailed as hero after he died while saving a woman who had fallen into the Thames last April. This is the second permanent tribute to him recently, after Salmon Youth Club on Old Jamaica

E-scooters to be legalised but safety concerns remain

kit@southwarknews.co.uk London politicians have warned of safety concerns after the government unveiled plans to let people use private e-scooters on public roads.

The government pledged this week to make legalising and regulating the use of e-scooters a priority for 2022 in the Queen's Speech, the government's programme of laws it wants to pass in the year.

A wide variety of e-scooters are seen around on London streets and pavements, despite only the TfL hire scooters being legal to use on public roads, and only in certain parts of the capital - including Southwark.

Caroline Pidgeon, Liberal Democrat deputy chair of the London Assembly's transport committee and former deputy leader of Southwark Council, warned that the government needed to bring in "tough regulatory standards" on the definition of a legal e-scooter. That should include an acceptable speed limit and safety measures like lights.

“Most importantly it is vital that they remain illegal to be ridden on pavements and that the police properly enforce the law in this area," she told the News in a written statement.

“The needs of pedestrians and especially blind people must not be overlooked.”

There have been several different safety

concerns over e-scooters. Transport for London (TfL) banned them on its network in December after a series of "intense fires" caused by faulty lithium ion batteries.

The Houses of Parliament's fire risk management team banned staff and MPs from bringing e-scooters and e-bikes into its buildings in January this year because of concerns about the batteries exploding. The email pointed that there had been 50 fires linked to e-scooters and

e-bikes in London over the previous year.

Despite this, there has been no official guidance from the government to local authorities on e-scooter fire safety.

E-scooter collisions - of which there were more than 250 in London in the first six months of 2021 alone - are causing a rise in serious injuries, which concerned a top King's College surgeon, as we reported last year. Ash Vasireddy told the News that he "would never use an e-scooter" because of the risks involved.

Walworth rogue landlord who devised ‘cramped’ flats fined

A rogue landlord who squeezed tenants into “cramped and substandard” conditions has been ordered to pay £268,000, or face two years behind bars.

Transport for London (TfL) has abandoned plans to install permanent defence barriers on most of central London's bridges, despite a coroner's report strongly recommending they be put in.

The transport agency said in a report on Tuesday, May 10, that it would "complete the Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) work on Westminster Bridge, but no permanent measures will be progressed on other bridges". TfL estimated the cost of upgrading the bridges at £30m.

There are temporary barriers on seven other central London bridges: Tower Bridge, London Bridge, Southwark Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, Lambeth Bridge, Vauxhall Bridge.

These have been in place since 2017, when terrorists attacked people on Westminster Bridge and London Bridge.

Coroner Mark Lucraft warned in 2019 that these temporary measures should be upgraded. He said in a report on the deaths of the 2017 London Bridge attack victims: "I expect the relevant public authorities to make every effort to progress the installation of permanent measures on the London bridges.

"Funding disputes between public bodies would not be a satisfactory reason for delay in the planning and installation work."

Abandoning these plans is yet another sign of the struggles facing TfL since the pandemic, when its fare income was slashed as people stayed home to slow the spread of Covid-19. £30 million is a relatively small amount for the transport

Southwark has seen several collisions involving e-scooters, including one incident where a Rotherhithe man died after an alleged crash on Long Lane in Bermondsey. Other incidents include a young child being hospitalised after being seriously hurt by an e-scooter in a Camberwell park.

Some fifteen people have been seriously injured in the TfL e-scooter scheme, according to a report by the London Assembly's transport committee

published this week. But "it is hard to get meaningful data" on the number of injuries suffered by e-scooter users outside of the trial.

In addition, e-scooters are quiet, and are often ridden illegally on pavements, which is dangerous for pedestrians and especially blind people.

A spokesperson for the Royal National Institute of Blind People said: "E-scooters are fast-moving, operate quietly, making them difficult to detect, and are often ridden on pavements despite rules prohibiting this.

"Because of this, they pose particular risks for blind and partially sighted pedestrians."

An argument in favour of wider legalising e-scooter riding is that it will allow the government to regulate e-scooters better and improve safety.

A government spokesperson said this week: "While riding a privately owned e-scooter on public land is currently illegal, we are considering how best to design future regulations and our Transport Bill will help us to take the steps we need to make e-scooters safer and support innovation.

"Safety will always be our top priority and our trials are helping us to better understand the benefits of properly regulated, safety-tested e-scooters and their impact on public space."

TfL owns Westminster and Vauxhall Bridges themselves, and is responsible for the road on Blackfriars, London and Tower Bridges but does not own the structure. Southwark Bridge is owned

London mayor Sadiq Khan said earlier this year that: "TfL is committed to completing the design and build for Westminster and Vauxhall bridges (where it is the asset owner and highway authority) and concept designs for

Blackfriars, London and Tower bridges (where it is the highway authority, but not the asset owner)."

He went on: "Southwark and Waterloo bridges are not within TfL’s scope as TfL is neither the highway authority, nor the asset owner of these bridges, however Southwark Bridge includes heavy trieff kerb style segregate cycle tracks, whose entry & exit points have recently been upgraded with HVM bollards."

Asked whether Bridge House Estates would be putting in permanent barriers on Southwark Bridge, London Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge and Tower Bridge, a spokesperson said that the trust did not comment on issues of security.

The case, brought to court after an investigation by Southwark Council, heard how the landlord illegally squashed seven flats into a development designed for six at 2a Boyson Road, Walworth, SE17.

The council said Mr Iftikhar Ahmed, 54, of Mount Drive, Wembley, the director of Highbrow Properties Limited, had designed the properties so badly that five flats had zero storage space.

He also let the rooms as temporary accommodation and short-term holiday lets without authorisation, resulting in the loss of “much-needed” permanent accommodation.

Ahmed, who pleaded guilty at the Inner London Crown Court on 28 April and now he, or the company, must now pay the £230,000 as a crime confiscation order.

Highbrow Properties Limited incurred fines and costs of £25,000, while Ahmed must pay fines and costs of £13,000.

A confiscation order is when the convicted defendant pays the money gained from illegal activity to HM Courts and Tribunal Service, but is not stripped of their asset.

Cllr Darren Merrill, Cabinet Member for a Safer, Cleaner Borough, said: “Everyone deserves a good quality home and space standards make sure that new homes are both good quality

and a good size.

“This blatant attempt to shoehorn an extra flat and additional bedrooms, compromised the entire block.

“This court result serves as warning that planning control breaches will not be tolerated and supports the council in cracking down on those who try to benefit from renting illegal and substandard properties in Southwark.

“In addition to this work, I am also pushing for more powers to tackle low quality homes. Coupled with adequate funding, this could help us to ensure that quality housing is available to everyone in Southwark.”

The constant coming and going of people from the properties had reportedly disturbed local residents too.

The council ordered Ahmed to demolish the unauthorised flats or restore it to its planning permissionapproved design.

The flats, which the council has said must be used for permanent accommodation, are now in compliance with planning permission.

Councillor urges schools to tackle Dulwich car congestion, as head teacher hits back Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A Lambeth councillor has urged Dulwich schools to “get a grip” and take practical steps to reduce the congestion caused by parents’ cars.

Herne Hill and Loughborough ward councillor Jim Dickson named Dulwich College, Dulwich College Prep London, James Allen's Girls School and Kingsdale as institutions that had failed to address the issue.

The headteacher of Kingsdale, Steve Morrison, has since hit back, saying that the school does promote sustainable travel to parents.

Dulwich residents have complained that, during term time, the junction at Norwood Road and Croxted Road is rammed with cars, causing congestion and pollution.

At a Herne Hill Hustings event, Jim Dickson said schools needed to “get a grip” and, speaking to the News, he doubled down on his statement.

Cllr Dickson said: ”It’s a question of anti-social behaviour because their use of private vehicles is causing a health problem and environmental hazard to residents in the local area.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A 34-year-old man was rushed to hospital on Saturday, May 14 with shotgun wounds after a shooting in Brockwell Park.

Police were called to Brockwell Park, Tulse Hill, SW2 at 2.15am.

They attended along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service The man's condition has been assessed as non life-threatening.

Lambeth Parks and Leisure tweeted: "Brockwell Park continues to remain closed. We are aware that a couple of gates have been opened by stakeholders arriving on site earlier this morning.

"These will be closed shortly. At present, the indication from the police is that the park will be able to re-open from midday."

Helen Hayes, Labour MP for Dulwich & West Norwood, tweeted that morning: "Really concerning to hear that there was a shooting earlier in Brockwell Park. My thoughts are with the victim in hospital."

No arrests have been made and a crime scene was put in place.

Cllr Dickson said he backed suggestions made by Sustainable School Run (SSR), an East Dulwichbased group of parents and locals advocating for reduced congestion and cleaner air.

SSR say, as non-catchment schools, Dulwich’s private school students are more likely to live further away from school.

They say that around 40 per cent of pupils at schools in Dulwich & West Norwood attend non-catchment schools, and many of these will live too far away to consider cycling or walking every day.

They would like parents to use ‘HomeRun’, a digital platform enabling parents to connect with each other and organise car-sharing for their children.

Already backed by some Camden councillors in north London, it collates anonymous travel data, helping schools to develop sustainable travel initiatives.

Headteacher Mr Morrison said his school, which is not private, already encourages parents to use HomeRun, and operates its own heavilysubsidised, non-profit bus service to and from the East Dulwich area.

SSR also want local authorities to instate parking restrictions around local schools. They say the introduction of controlled parking zones and

‘no parking infrastructure’ would discourage parking near schools, reducing pollution and improving road safety.

SSR say data collected by TFL’s SCOOT system, a network of traffic lights using motion sensors to monitor traffic flow, demonstrates local schools’ significant contribution to local congestion.

They say data showed that, when private schools began half-term holidays on 18 October, average weekly vehicle flow immediately plummeted from 1,300 to 900.

By October 25, the vehicle flow had dropped to 800 and congestion percentage had fallen from over 26 to 12 per cent.

In response to Cllr Dickson’s statements, Steve Morrison, headteacher at Kingsdale Foundation School, said their own data on travel routes and modes to school indicated that “Kingsdale parent vehicles have a fairly negligible impact with respect to the East Dulwich area, if any measurable impact at all”.

He added that the school’s staggered start meant that most children start school after 9am, thereby missing the rush hour traffic.

He also pointed to the school's “incredibly well used, huge” cycle storage capacity and the fact the school boasts a Sustainable Silver Travel Plan Award for their promotion of walking,

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Police are appealing for help in identifying a man following a serious homophobic assault in Burgess Park on Saturday morning, May 14.

The 55-year-old male victim was approached by a man, not known to him, while walking with two friends in Burgess Park in the early hours of the morning at 1:40am.

The man shouted homophobic abuse before hitting the victim over the head and making off on foot along Albany Road.

Emergency services attended the location. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment. His condition is not lifethreatening.

Officers wish to speak with a man who was seen on CCTV walking along Albany Road. He is a young man, possibly aged in his early 20s, who was wearing a stud earring and carrying a plastic JD Sports string bag on his back.

Even though his face cannot be seen in this image, it is hoped that somebody will recognise the man. Enquiries are ongoing, including a search for any additional CCTV footage.

Commander Dr Alison Heydari, Frontline Policing, said: “We have made it clear that tackling violent crime is the Met’s top priority and we are seeing positive results. This sort of violence will not be tolerated, all the more so when exacerbated by a homophobic motive.

“Officers from the Met’s Central South BCU are already working at pace to identify the man responsible for this attack. I can assure Londoners that our investigation will be thorough, well-resourced and as painstaking as necessary to bring the individual responsible to justice.”

Every year, 170,000 people are reported missing, and a staggering 70,000 of them are children.

Fortunately, only 2% of children and 5% of adults are missing more than a week.

But in some cases, people are gone for months or years, causing heartache for families.

Name: Anthony Donnellan Age at disappearance: 29 Missing from: Camberwell Missing since: 11/10/1995 Anthony Donnellan, a Camberwell man, has been missing since 1995.

Known as Tony by his friends, he was originally from a small farm in West Clare, Ireland, and had been living in London for a decade.

But he vanished in October 1995, having just days before been to visit his sister in Leicester Square.

In October 2015, his family wrote: ‘Tony, if you see this, if you are living your own life somewhere, we have been looking for you for the last 20 years and so much has happen in those 20 years and we all need to know where you are and that you are safe and happy.

"We love you Tony and we want you back, nothing else matters, only you.’

His family are still desperate for answers.

His family are now searching the Alps for the missing man.

The report said “children's safety and welfare are compromised" and "babies and children were left alone, out of sight and hearing".

Published on Thursday May 5, it outlined the findings of a January inspection at Rising Stars School, 143 - 145 Peckham Hill Street. It said: “Children's safety and welfare are compromised, because leaders do not ensure that the requirements for registration are consistently met.

“Babies and children are frequently supervised by only one member of staff, while other staff complete domestic chores, such as cooking and cleaning.

“Therefore, although staff-to-child ratios meet requirements, children do not receive the individualised care and learning they need to thrive.”

But owner Luke Anyaorah, aged 62, who founded the nursery in 2012, said: “The inspector declared war on us.

When she came, right from the start we felt that she was biased.

"That report she wrote extrapolated beyond reason and then used that extrapolation as evidence."

For example, Luke said that babies, plural, could not have been left unsupervised because there was only one baby in the nursery when she visited.

Luke, who says he has run nurseries since 1992, now plans to quit because the stress of the Ofsted report is affecting his health.

The report said nappy creams with hazard warnings were left in reach of unaccompanied children.

It added that the nursery, which cares for children aged up to four, had fitted fire extinguishers incorrectly and had not serviced them to check they were working.

Luke concedes that the fire extinguishers were not properly inspected, attributing that fact to the nursery's "no-stranger" policy which meant technicians couldn't come in.

He added they did have fire blankets and buckets of sand.

The nursery was found to be inadequate in all four assessed areas; quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.

The Ofsted inspector said activities were “unimaginative and mundane” which meant children were left to “wander around seeking something purposeful to do.”

As a result, they said children made inadequate progress and their language development had been hindered.

Luke Anyaorah says he has submitted an official complaint to Ofsted that challenges the report's findings.

The report recognised that children demonstrated “caring bonds with staff” and that employees knew how to recognise signs of abuse and neglect.

It also said that children liked their daily outings to libraries, parks, and shops and that parents, who found staff friendly, said their children enjoyed attending.

However, the report said: “Leaders and staff do not plan and implement an ambitious curriculum, to help children build on their skills and abilities.

“Staff focus too much on tasks and information that children already know well, such as pouring water or naming colours.

“They do not extend children's learning, to help them make the progress they could.”

Ofsted have now issued the nursery with a six-point plan which demands improvements ranging from children’s safety to an improved curriculum.

The nursery was rated ‘good’ when it was last inspected in May 2017.

Comment ‘Thank you for your votes, now to work’ Kieron Williams Southwark Council leader

I

am so grateful to the residents of Southwark for re-electing Southwark Labour to lead our local council.

We stood on a proud record; building council homes, investing in our parks, cleaning up our air, helping people into work and supporting residents through the toughest of times - but now we must renew our purpose once again.

We have said we will always be on your side, but now we need to prove it and deliver on our ambitious manifesto to tackle the cost of living crisis, make genuine progress to cut carbon emissions and build a fairer, greener and safer borough.

Our first challenges are already clear. The Tories’ latest plan for government, set out in the Queen’s Speech last week, said nothing about how they intend to support families struggling with the cost of living.

Inflation is spiralling out of control, household bills are up by hundreds of pounds and prices in the shops ever increasing. People’s wages are being squeezed harder than they ever have been and fewer are able to make any meaningful savings at all. Those that can save money are seeing the value of those savings diminish before their eyes.

Then the Tories do what they do best – add insult to injury. Last week we saw Tory MP Lee Anderson blame the existence of food banks because those who struggling to make ends

meet “cannot cook properly” and “cannot budget”. This week government minister Rachel Maclean let the mask slip once more, telling people unable to pay their bills to “take on more hours” or get “a better paid-job”. It’s been over 40 years since Lord Tebbit told the unemployed to ‘get on your bike’ and look for work – and they haven’t changed since and they still don’t get it.

But Labour has a plan, both nationally and locally here in Southwark. Across the country we are clear that the cost of energy needs to be met by those companies that are profiting from this crisis. It should never be the case that a few corporations profit while so much of the country is driven into desperate need. Oil firms such as Shell who made £7.3Billion profit, or BP who made £5Billion in the first three months of this year alone, should be charged a windfall tax so that government can take decisive action to support those families most in need.

Closer to home, Southwark Labour will take action now to support residents through this difficult period.

We will launch a new Cost of Living Fund, to support those hardest hit and support them when they simply can’t make ends meet. We will be rolling out a new Southwark Energy Savers service, so you can get the best advice on how to keep energy bills down and we will provide free access to the internet for all residents through a network of

community buildings so everyone can get online without having to pay for it.

I am also clear that while this crisis needs a swift response, we also need a new approach to how the council supports the borough’s economy going forward into the long term. This means challenging ourselves to go further once again to create new jobs.

We have committed to create 2,000 new green jobs through a new Green Skills Centre, as well as 2,000 new apprenticeships and 3,000 training opportunities for local people.

It also means we need to make every effort to keep more wealth within our own communities, and so we will ensure that the council and other big institutions in Southwark buy more goods and services from local businesses, cooperatives, social enterprises and charities. Crucially, we will redouble our efforts to tackle low pay, creating a new Southwark Living Wage Unit tasked with doubling the number of Southwark employers who pay at least the London Living Wage to all their staff.

Whether you voted Labour or not, in re-electing a Labour council, everyone in Southwark can count on us to be on your side throughout these extremely difficult times. While the government refuses to take responsibility for the cost of living crisis, my team and I will do everything we can to support you and your family.

The News recently reported that the Crown and Anchor Tap House on New Kent Road, Elephant and Castle, had reopened without a bar.

Instead, new owner Jeff Hussain had rebooted the once-upon-a-time Irish boozer, with a futuristic, digitised system where customers can pour themselves a drink.

But Southwark News readers snorted at the prospect of 'serve yourself' scoops. Twitter user Tom James said: "If I want to serve myself I just walk to the fridge in my kitchen.. and it’s a third of the price!"

Reacting on Facebook, Mandy Whiffin wrote: "This is the AB. Can you imagine all us doing self serve back in the day?"

She tagged a friend, laughingly asking: "Do you think we could be trusted in there?"

The story had twitter user Mark Brady reminiscing about the pub's past life too. He wrote: "The old ABC; what a shame!"

On Facebook, Tom Jones wrote: "No. I’d rather someone earn a wage and serve me my drink."

Jeff Hussain said the self-service system "prevents the thing where you’re waving your card around at the bar for the first twenty minutes. It’s instant gratification!”

The pub's doors swung open at the beginning of May and sells Korean fried Chicken. It also serves a variety of locally sourced beverages including Orbit, brewed in Walworth, and Partizan IPA, brewed in Bermondsey.

Tom Jordan, 43, a local animation producer who stopped for a drink said: “I love the concept. Just jump in and off you go and then you fill up on fried chicken.”

David Hancock, commenting on Facebook, was unconvinced. He said: "It's a traditional pub with beautiful architecture and that's what it should have remained. They should've bought one of those new units around the area for this sorta thing."

London politicians have warned of safety concerns after the government unveiled plans to let people use private e-scooters on public roads.

Cost of living crisis - absent!

L ast week’s Queen’s Speech marked the start of a new Parliamentary Session.

The Conservative government announced 38 new laws that they hope will be voted through in the next twelve months.

But there was one issue noticeable by its absence. The Conservatives have announced no new measures that would help tackle the cost-of-living crisis, the major issue of concern for thousands of my constituents in Dulwich and West Norwood.

With inflation close to 10 per cent, taxes up and the cost of our gas, electricity and weekly groceries soaring it is beyond

belief that the Conservatives are still refusing to take action.

Labour has a clear costed plan to tackle the cost-of-living crisis. A one-off windfall tax on the soaring profits of gas and oil companies whose profits are rocketing with rising energy costs.

But despite this clear costed plan the Conservatives still fail to take action.

In recent weeks, as I’ve been out campaigning for the council elections, I’ve noticed more and more older people on colder days answering their door wearing a coat inside because they can’t afford to heat their homes. This a shocking, disgraceful reality of 21st century Britain and it’s completely unacceptable.

Labour has a plan to fully insulate millions of homes across the country to save money for local residents and to help tackle the climate crisis. We would also invest more in renewable energy such as wind farms to bring down bills and reduce our reliance on the fossil fuels which are driving climate change.

The Queen’s Speech was an opportunity to set out the solutions to the urgent problems local residents face, and a bold and optimistic vision for the future of our country.

Sadly it did neither, exposing a government which is both out of touch and out of ideas. Residents in Southwark and Lambeth and across the country deserve far better.

They shouldn't be on the pavement, just like cycles shouldn't be. That, combined with more cycling/scooting infrastructure sounds like a great idea to get fewer cars.

E-scooters must be properly regulated

I

n theory, we should welcome the government’s plan to legalise all e-scooters on the roads, because they can be an anti-social menace on our streets, clogging up pavements and weaving dangerously in and out of traffic - and making them legal would at least allow for more regulation.

It is unclear exactly how many e-scooters are not in the Transport for London (TfL) trial and so are being used illegally, although one study said there were nearly a million in the UK. E-scooters are also being used in crimes like robberies and assaults - 574 between July 2020 and April 2021, and have been linked to dangerous incidents like road traffic collisions and battery fires.

It is to be hoped that legalising e-scooters will help police and local authorities keep track of e-scooters and so prevent these crimes. It remains to be seen whether it will actually help in practice, and the government needs to set out more guidance on how councils like Southwark can monitor e-scooters being used in the borough. But whether or not we like e-scooters, they are clearly here to stay and so need to be properly regulated.

Slow decline of London’s infrastructure?

W

hat does it say about London as a city that we can’t even afford to put permanent barriers to block terrorists on most of our bridges, years after a spate of attacks rocked the city?

And why should Westminster Bridge get permanent, unintrusive bollards, while London Bridge and Tower Bridge are left with ugly concrete blocks that clog up the bus lane in the former and cause flooding in the latter?

The situation is complicated because Transport for London only owns some of the bridges, and manages some of the roads on top, and the City of London effectively owns most of the others.

TfL says it can’t afford to put in permanent barriers this year and the City’s Bridge House Trust won’t comment.

It’s obviously not the most pressing issue, given skyrocketing inflation and energy bills, but just another sign of the slow decline of London’s ability to manage its infrastructure.

The Trust has worked with patients to develop a site that puts their needs first, and is designed so that information can be found quickly and easily.

are all very strong. Ossian Perret plays the nerdy, obsessive Len with great warmth and some nice pieces of physical comedy. It’s a performance which plays well opposite Joseph Potter’s controlling and, at times, mentally unstable Pete. The pace of the show is what lets it down a little.

Scenes are often very brief and with

locations changing frequently the show does have a significant amount of time taken up by stage business.

A naturally tight stage of a theatre above a pub does not help either, but every scene needed to have something moved or a prop placed in semi-blackout, which disturbed any rhythm the show was getting into.

The Return of Pinter’s Dwarfs

Even the keenest of theatregoers will not be too familiar with Harold Pinter’s The Dwarfs, writes Christopher Peacock...

Adapted by Kerry Lee Crabbe from the novel written in the 1950s and with only a couple of outings of differing forms, it’s easy to understand why.

Now, the White Bear Theatre hosts this Flying Colours production.

The Dwarfs didn’t have the smoothest journey to the stage; it took Pinter four years to complete the novel which went unpublished until 1990. He did adapt it for radio in 1960 and took out one of the main characters, which made it incredibly concise but not as accessible for audiences. When adapting the novel, Kerry Lee Crabbe, with the blessing from Pinter himself, reinstated the only female character, Virginia, into the story of four people living in 1950s Hackney.

The other three characters are friends, Len, a quirky train station porter, Mark, a young actor with an eye for the ladies and Pete, Virginia’s City-working partner. The focus of the whole piece is the relationships which are tense yet familial and almost competitive at times. Intellectual conversations on Shakespeare and Bach fly out of their mouths in a mix of youthful confidence and East London wit and banter. The action turns when Virginia, having had too much of Pete’s overbearing intense nature, leaves him. This exposes the fragility of the friendships between the three men, especially after she then sleeps with Mark.

An old Victorian house in East London is being renovated by the couple who have bought it from an old lady who had lived there for many years. Jenny, the wife, begins hearing strange noises each night at 2.22am in their baby’s room. She is a non-believer, as is her husband, Sam,

so she tries to get to the bottom of it by standing in the room at 2.22. The sound of footsteps reveals there is definitely an unseen person walking around the baby’s cot. She tells this to Sam when he returns from a business trip and he laughs it off.

Semiautobiographical, fans of Pinter will see the seeds of themes and character traits that appear in later works and also recognise facets of Pinter’s own personality in all four of the characters. Pinter’s signature humour can be found in all the

scenes, and those that are fans of his work will enjoy the play and may also want to revisit the novel.

What follows is a night of secrets and lies, tricks and truth, and all fuelled by alcohol. This heady concoction has Jenny and Lauren now believing in the supernatural after they play a ghost-quiz drinking game and recount past ghostly experiences that they had not told before for fear of ridicule. Now, they decide, is the time to tell them.

With clichéd tropes of thunder and lightning, fog, and unearthly noises added in, plus the screams of copulating foxes, you have all you need to make an audience jump at the right time.

The Second Act takes Scary to another level when they decide that having a séance is a good idea. There are break ups and make ups as the foursome turn on each other, then further shouting and screaming helps us along to a rather neat ending at 2:22.

Writer Danny Robins grew up in a household that knew there was no God, Father Christmas or unicorns, but he became fascinated by ghosts. He read books, watched horror films, and researched the subject enough to form a theory that humans need to believe in something else instead of merely ceasing to exist at the end of their lives.

His play throws up questions: If clothes can’t ‘die’, why are ghosts never naked?

Why don’t ghosts appear at the bus stop or the checkout at Tesco? He also answers why we feel cold when scared, and why our hair then stands on end when we get a fearful shiver.

The house and its past occupants is a metaphor for one life ending and a new life taking over. The old layers of paint and wallpaper are the ghosts of the past.

Local boy Ben talks of the gentrification of his area as people like Sam move in and get rid of all traces of people like himself. Ben is a remnant of the past who ‘haunts’ the newcomers and their new ways.

2:22 A Ghost Story is the writer getting his research and theories onto a stage and into the mouths of actors. He puts the believers and sceptics in the ring to fight it out and then declares his winner.

The play will not convince believers that it is silly to believe or make nonbelievers suddenly believe in ghosts.

What it does do is give you a great night’s entertainment of laughs and shocks from an excellent cast.

We are opening up nominations for blue plaques again and we want to hear our readers’ thoughts over the next six weeks, before the annual deadline arrives at the end of June.We want to encourage people to put forward as wide-ranging a group of nominees as possible.

Southwark Heritage Association (SHA), which runs the programme in conjuction with Southwark News has put up more than 50 blue plaques commemorating people with local connections, and Southwark institutions that are particularly worth knowing about, since 2002.

Getting Southwark Council on board with the scheme it was and is a way of getting round the strict criteria put in place by English Heritage – which runs the national programme – that a building must be standing and a person dead to qualify.

Last year Dulwich resident and World War Two codebreaker Helene Aldwinckle emerged victorious in a crowded field, and her blue plaque should be unveiled by the end of June.

The other nominees last year were Barbara Steveni, Peckham resident and ‘the most famous artist you’ve never heard of’; the Reverend Jimmy Butterworth, Walworth Methodist preacher and trailblazing social worker; Borough-based spy novelist Len Deighton and Francis Peek, nineteenthcentury businessman, and the driving force behind the opening up of Dulwich Park.

After we select this year’s nominees, voting will open until mid-September, at which point we will announce the winner. Some of the previous winners are below.

Time and Talents on Bermondsey Street (Historic England)

Druid Street

Bermondsey was bombed heavily in the Second World War because of its strategically important, railways docks and factories. The area is thought to have suffered 395 air raids in the last three months of 1940 alone, with tragic consequences. One such bombing was the direct hit on the Druid Street arch on October 25, 1940. Some 77 people died that night.

Bermondsey Abbey

Bermondsey Abbey traces its origins to 1082 when a wealthy Londoner called Aylwin Childe set up a monastery on the site. French monks from the Loire came over - this was less than twenty years after the Norman conquest - and the community began. The monks were from the Cluny abbey, and the Bermondsey monastery only became independent about 300 years later.

The community was given the manor of Bermondsey by William II in 1094, and flourished. Describing the abbey, a nineteenth century historian wrote: “The monastic buildings were, doubtless, very extensive and magnificent; and the monks maintained a splendid hospitality and state.”

Sadly, like all monastic institutions, the abbey was dissolved under Henry VIII in the sixteenth century and much of the site was soon demolished to make way for a new mansion. Little of the abbey remains, although there are some remnants of the south-western tower visible under the Lokma restaurant at the corner of Tower Bridge Road and Abbey Street.

Little concrete information is known about the final two decades of her life, from 1945-1965, although one biographer claims she suffered a breakdown and spent two periods in psychiatric hospitals.

Edgar Kail

Dulwich Hamlet forward Edgar Kail was the last non-league footballer to play for England. Kail made his debut at the age of just 15 in 1915, and scored more than 400 goals for the Hamlet during his time with the club.

When the Camberwell man was called up to the England squad in 1929, he became the last non-league player to ever represent the Three Lions.

Despite the attention of professional clubs, Kail remained with Hamlet’s

amateurs throughout his entire playing career.

Although he last pulled on the famous blue and pink strip in 1933, Kail’s name is still sung by Dulwich fans, and the club’s East Dulwich stadium is on Edgar Kail Way.

Una Marson

Una Marson was the BBC’s first black female programme maker. Una, who was born in 1905, moved to London from Jamaica in 1932, settling in

Peckham. She moved back to Jamaica after four years before returning to London in 1938. She left again after the Second World War. She became friends with Dr Harold Moody, the founder of the League of Coloured Peoples, and wrote extensively in poetry, fiction and non-fiction.

In 1942 she was hired by the BBC to work on Calling the West Indies, which encouraged Caribbean soldiers in the British army to send in messages to their families, which were read out on

Time and Talents is a social charity with 135 years of history in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.

The charity was founded in 1887 to encourage educated women to help people less fortunate than them. After a few years of moving around, the group eventually found a permanent home in Bermondsey Street, where you can still see the stone frieze proclaiming its name.

The charity taught local women useful skills like singing, basketwork, knitting and sewing, and in 1913 set up housing for girls working on the docks who lived in crowded conditions at home. Time and Talents opened up a second centre on Abbey Street in 1931.

During the war, volunteers at Time and Talents helped rehouse people who had been bombed out of their homes. In 1980 the charity moved out of its Bermondsey buildings into the Old Mortuary on St Marychurch Street in Rotherhithe, where its community centre remains to this day.

sport@southwarknews.co.uk DIVISION ONE leaders Surrey drew their LV= Insurance County Championship match with Kent after rain ruined the final day at Beckenham last Sunday.

Just 9.2 overs were possible, with Kent moving from their overnight score of 82 for 1 to 114 for one during two mini sessions, still 327 runs behind Surrey’s first innings score of 671 for nine.

Surrey had been favourites after forcing Kent to follow on on day three, but conditions deteriorated throughout the day and play was abandoned at 3.48 pm, Kent taking ten points and Surrey sixteen.

Ben Compton was unbeaten on 63, while night-watchman Matt Milnes was not out on 16 at stumps.

Day four began with a minute’s silence in memory of the late Andrew Symonds, who played for Kent between 1999 and 2004. Former Australian all-rounder Symonds, 46, died in a car crash in Queensland last Saturday.

A break in the weather meant play started on time and the hosts resumed on 82 for one, still 359 behind. Conditions were overcast and the ball swung almost immediately but Compton reached 50 in the first over when he pulled Daniel Worrall for a single.

Light rain began to fall and the players went off after 29 minutes, Kent having moved to 108 without further loss. Lunch was taken early and although play resumed at 1.35pm, by then it was already raining again.

After nine increasingly moist minutes, during which Kent advanced to 114, the players came off again, Compton having added six to his score.

After two further hours of waiting and with no prospect of improvement, the game was abandoned as a draw.

The draw lifts Kent off the bottom of the table ahead of Gloucestershire.

Surrey head coach Gareth Batty was left to ponder whether his side would have got nine more wickets.

“It’s something we can’t control,” Batty said. “I feel like our batting performance was powerful again, it was skilful. 671 was a formidable total on a very good batting surface and we needed to get that volume of runs to be able to put the pressure on.

There was an intensity that would have been very hard for a lot of people to live with, which is a credit to the bowlers and the fielders, it was something to behold.

“Today it was always going to be very difficult to take nine more wickets but

the weather’s intervened, it ends up being a draw and we’ll come back in a few days.

“It was a very good batting surface.

I think at times it possibly wouldn’t have looked that way given the way we bowled and credit has to go to the big men. More than anything I think

credit has to go to Will Jacks for the way he bowled. I counted 14 overs straight and there wasn’t anything that resembled anything other than pretty much a perfect ball in a decent area. I thought he was magnificent and probably didn’t get the full rewards that he deserved, but the

four for 60 was great.

“Would we have got the nine wickets today? Who knows?”

Surrey are next in action in a domestic first class multi-day match against a Sri Lanka XI. The venue is Woodbridge Road, Guildford and it runs from May 20-23.

By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH TRAVELLED to Stoke D’Abernon for their second match of the season in Division 1 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship last weekend, but had another disappointing day, losing by five wickets.

Dulwich chose to bat but lost skipper Chris Purshouse in the fourth over and Ollie Steele in the

seventh, the latter being unluckily run out when the bowler deflected a straight drive onto the stumps. James Schofield and Ahmed Khan took the score to 43 in the 15th over before Khan fell for 7. Schofield and Frankie Brown then added 85 in 22 overs before Schofield fell for 43, off 83 balls, to be followed two balls later by overseas player Daniel Crowley to make it 128-5 after 37 overs.

Jon Lodwick joined Brown, and the pair had taken the score to 149 in the 43rd over when Brown fell for 62, off 96 balls. Lodwick was the next to go off the last ball of the 47th over, having faced 38 balls to make 29 out

of the 46 runs scored while he was at the wicket. Simon Harwood then joined Michael Harms and they made merry, scoring 38 runs off the last three overs, 21 of which came from the last over. The innings closed on 212-7, with Harwood undefeated on 20 off 13 balls and Harms 16 off 12.

The Harwood brothers opened the bowling together for Dulwich for the first time, but Chris was unable to find his radar as he bowled five wides (one of which went for four), to see him taken off after conceding 14 runs in two overs. But he was not the only bowler to suffer as Max Subba Row and James Corbishley

launched their assault. They had added 89 for the first wicket in just 16.3 overs when Subba Row was stumped by Harms off Khan, having made 47 off 52 balls.

Brown had Junaid Allie caught behind for 12 with the score on 113, but this just brought in Alastair Curran. He blasted 28 at a run a ball in a stand of 48 for the third wicket before falling to Simon Harwood.

Oliver Trower then played second fiddle to Corbishley, and it was a surprise when the latter skied a catch to give Crowley his first wicket for Dulwich with the score on 203.

He had made 84 off 104 balls. With

two runs needed for victory Trower smashed Lodwick to long on to give Dulwich their fifth wicket and an unexpected bowling point. Stoke reached their target in the next over with 11.4 overs to spare.

Dulwich will reflect that they will need to put in a better allround performance if they are to consolidate their place in the division.

This weekend they have a difficult home fixture against Spencer, who narrowly missed out on promotion last year and who have won both of their opening matches in the current campaign.

Professional boxer Kongo, 29, grew up in Bermondsey. ‘2Slick’ rebounded from the first defeat of his career last year by winning his return fight in March, part of a multi-bout deal he signed with BOXXER and Sky Sports at the start of 2022. Kongo is scheduled to return to Wembley Arena for his next fight in June.

Welterweight Kongo said: “When I was young the Millwall community

supported me, but there weren’t many examples of positivity in my close proximity, a role model.

“So, now, I want to give back to the same community that I grew up around and shine a light for the kids growing up in the same neighbourhoods I grew up in to have a beacon to look towards, using my voice, experience, and platform.

“Hopefully I, alongside Millwall Community Trust, can continue to do great work for the locals.”

MCT CEO Sean Daly added: “It’s absolutely brilliant to be able to have Chris as an ambassador for the Trust.

He is truly a motivational person who the kids at MCT can look up to and

learn from, as he himself is local.

“Chris has shown his support to MCT by holding boxing sessions at our holiday camp, having Q&A sessions, giving participants tickets to watch him live and more.

“We’re excited to have him on board as we continue to bring positive change in the local community.”

After one of those sessions at The Lions Centre, one student said: “I really enjoyed the Chris Kongo session.

It taught me a lot about his career, his pathway of steering off the roads, and wanting to pursue his career.”

Another student added: “I hope to see him again sometime soon – he’s a very inspiring person.”

This season saw the Lionesses extend the academy programme

under Sian-Marie Fitzpatrick beyond the highly successful under-14 and under-16 teams.

London City had also taken over a successful girls club and were hot favourites for this final at Rectory Park, Northolt, which is the home of the Middlesex FA. The Millwall under-18 side had developed rapidly through this season and were desperate to win this contest given all the circumstances but in particular as they had lost to their opponents three times in their debut season. The fact that they came so agonisingly close against a very well-organised London City will encourage them for the new

and stiffer challenge in the Junior Premier League.

The Lionesses just fell short of glory in this passionate and titanic final, played before a large and vocal crowd.

Millwall started with five under-16 players and fell behind in first-half stoppage-time.

After the break they came out firing and equalised on 58 minutes, but London City regained the lead twelve minutes later.

Millwall went on the attack again and won a penalty but missed the attempt to equalise for a second time.

The heat on the day was taking its toll and there were frequent

stoppages leading to nearly fifteen minutes of added-time, but the Lionesses could not find another goal.

Nonetheless, it was an outstanding team effort and it would be wrong to mention an individual player as they were all superb. Their performance bodes well for their preparations for their debut season in the Junior Premier League.

Meanwhile, former Lynn fighter Ellis Zorro beat Ricky Reeves to win the BOXXER series cruiserweight tournament in Manchester last Saturday night.

Zorro, 29, won the three-round bout on two scores of 29-28 and one of 30-27. That was after a quarterfinal and semi-final on the same night.

Lewisham’s Zorro (14-0) pocketed £40,000 for winning the eight-man tournament as he also secured a contract with promoters BOXXER and Sky Sports.

“I want to start fighting for titles,” Zorro told Sky Sports.

“My coaches were telling me keep my composure and that’s what I did in all three fights.

“These guys were calling me out but it was a waste of time and energy as I showed no one here was at my level.”

Bermondsey get SCEFL place

Bermondsey and AFC Whyteleafe are two new sides in the division, which drops to eighteen teams.

They are a tier below Fisher and Stansfeld, the latter who were promoted to the Premier Division as champions last season.

Bermondsey said: “This is a historic day in the club’s history and a huge pat on the back for everyone involved and made this happen.”

Summer work kicks off as duo officially released Retained list set to be revealed this week

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL WERE set to release their retained list this week but there weren’t expected to be any surprises as the Lions officially confirmed the departures of Alex Pearce and Connor Mahoney.

The Lions have to decide whether to replace the experienced Alex Pearce

Millwall manager Gary Rowett and his recruitment department – including Alex Aldridge back as head of football operations – are planning for a busy summer in the transfer market.

The Lions currently have nineteen senior players contracted to the club beyond this season and one of them, Mahlon Romeo, is likely to leave this summer.

Several young players who have made senior appearances for Millwall, such as Alex Mitchell and Nana Boateng, could be sent out on loan, bringing that squad number down.

Jed Wallace and Maikel Kieftenbeld are due to be out of contract at the end of June though both have been offered new deals.

While Pearce’s influence on the pitch won’t be a huge miss as he made just nine appearances last season, his experience at the club will be and one of Rowett’s decisions is whether to recruit another senior centre-back.

Rowett explained what the club are losing after the last game of the

season against AFC Bournemouth.

“He’s led when he hasn’t played loads,” Rowett said. “He came in [to start] against Coventry and was absolutely phenomenal as a leader. There are not many players like Pearcey.

“What I would say is that there should be a lot of clubs out there looking at Alex Pearce because what he can do is galvanise your dressing room and show leadership.

“He’s one of very few players left [like that] and he’s also a very good footballer so he’ll have options this summer.

“But for every team you sometimes have to move forward in a different way, and Pearcey understands that.”

The biggest change to the squad will be in attack. From last season’s squad, top-scorer Benik Afobe, Oliver Burke and Sheyi Ojo have returned to their parent clubs.

Millwall also arguably haven’t replaced Matt Smith after the target man left for League Two Salford City last January. Rowett has spoken about “going in a different direction” by trying to sign young, mobile forwards so it remains to be seen if there is a place for an experienced big man up front.

It should be something worth considering given how often Smith was such an effective weapon coming off the bench. The injury-

time winner against Charlton Athletic at The Den in Rowett’s first season immediately springs to mind.

Mahoney only proved his worth a handful of times. There were several false dawns after his £1million move from AFC Bournemouth in the summer of 2019. His best month for the club was probably January 2020, when he came on and scored in a 3-1 league win against Luton Town and then followed that up with another goal and an excellent performance full of skill and flair in the next game, a 3-0 FA Cup third-round victory over Newport County. But he never kicked on from there.

Millwall’s biggest job will be replacing the goals and assists of Afobe and Wallace, if they can’t get the former back from Stoke City and if the latter leaves. Wallace got twelve assists last season, adding to his double-figure goal and assist hauls from each of the two previous seasons. An undercontract Wallace would probably fetch well over £5million in the transfer market, a figure Millwall couldn’t pay for a replacement, underling the size of the challenge if their best player has played his last game for the club.

Of the next generation of talent, players such as Sean O’Brien and Jayden Davis were hoping for new deals after good seasons for the under-23s.

Former Lions forward opens up on career low

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FORMER MILLWALL forward Jon Dadi Bodvarsson has opened up on his struggles with the Lions and how he emerged from “a dip”.

Bodvarsson, 29, scored just seven times in 76 games for Millwall after moving from Reading for around £750,000 in July 2019.

Iceland international Bodvarsson started only 26 times in the league across two-and-a-half seasons before having his contract mutually ended last January to facilitate a free transfer to League One Bolton Wanderers.

Bodvarsson made a positive impact for Ian Evatt’s side. Bolton eventually finished ninth after being seventeenth when

Former Wolves attacker Bodvarsson scored seven goals in 21 league games, ten of them starts. He had scored just

one goal in his previous 41 games for the Lions.

Bodvarsson’s goal tally for the Trotters was his joint-best in a season since he

scored ten goals for Reading in 2017-18.

Bodvarsson had played only eighteen minutes of football last season, as a substitute in Millwall’s 3-1 win over Cambridge United in the EFL Cup, before he left for Bolton.

“I think it is important for players who have been in the same position as I was – in a dip at Millwall – not to be too emotionally attached to it,” Bodvarsson told local media in Bolton.

“You have to keep going, working hard, stay fit, because eventually it won’t be that bad, something positive will come out of it.

“I just stuck to it and eventually you will find a place where you are loving it and you are getting that same energy back to you, the love, and you need it as a player.

“And sometimes it is just about luck

where you land. You never know until you are actually at the place how it is going to be.

“You get all the promises in the world when you join a club, obviously, but you never really know until you are there.

“Thankfully for me every box is checked here at Bolton and I love it here.”

Bodvarsson hit it off in attack with Dapo Afolayan, Dion Charles and Amadou Bakayoko.

“It is great,” he said. “Baka and me are finding each other well and Dapo is always working around us when he is playing too. Dion is making those unselfish runs and stretching the game out.

“It is really attractive how different the options are up front so it makes it easier for the manager to rotate.”

Gary Rowett wants any loan signings to be with a view to permanent switches

GARY ROWETT has explained the factors that will decide the size of his senior squad at the start of next season – including the performances of some of the young players in preseason.

Millwall had 23 senior players after the end of the transfer window last August but were severely stretched by a Covid-19 outbreak over the winter and numerous injury problems throughout the campaign.

Two more players, Zak Lovelace and Nana Boateng, were given their debuts later in the season.

Defender Alex Mitchell, 20, and forward Isaac Olaofe, 22, will be part of pre-season preparations after positive loan spells at Leyton Orient and Sutton United in League Two. Rowett expects similar senior numbers next season.

“It depends on how many of the young players impress in pre-season,” Rowett said. “You essentially work off three goalkeepers and then two for each of the other positions.

“Sometimes you might end up with one or two extra forwards within the group.

That’s an area where there is a bit more rotation and a bit more movement within games. That’s something we’ll look at.

“It’s also something we want to look at in terms of the way the loans have worked, young players being loaned out to get on a pathway to get them coming back into the building.”

Millwall will also target loan signings with a view to making them permanent additions.

Rowett added: “It’s something we’ll consider in the summer if there are players out there we feel we can sign for the future as well as the present. That’s something that as a club we want to be better planned for. We want to think ahead and plan ahead so that we’re stronger for the years to come, not just next season.

“There are different ways of looking at your squad. Pre-season is when that will be assessed.

“But 23, 24 is what you’d go with for most clubs with our budget.”

Meanwhile, Millwall are continuing discussions with Maikel Kieftenbeld’s representatives to try to strike a new deal for the midfielder.

“The club are in discussions with Michael’s representatives,” Rowett said.

“Again, I’ve spoken about the reasons why I’d like Maikel here next year.

“That then has to go through the usual process of essentially Alex [Aldridge] and Steve [Kavanagh] speaking to the agents and trying to see if we can come to an agreement.

“That will be ongoing but that is certainly one that we would like to do. I would like him to be here next year.”

Rowett took a quick break after the end of the season, but it wasn’t long before he was back planning for the next campaign, which begins a week earlier than normal, at the end of July, because of the winter World Cup this year.

“You just don’t get a chance [to fully switch off],” Rowett said. “I started the summer thinking I’d try and have a really good break without thinking too

much about it, and then the second day of holiday I got my book out and started planning stuff again.

“I think you actually enjoy doing it. You need a little bit of time to not be doing it 24/7 because it is obviously quite a consuming job.

“But I enjoy the planning side of it, it’s something I like doing.

“It’s certainly no hardship.”

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT hasn’t decided who will officially replace Alex Pearce as club captain but admitted it is something he has yet to think about.

Pearce, 33, will leave at the end of his contract this summer after three-and-a-half seasons and 81 appearances.

Shaun Hutchinson was on-pitch skipper when Pearce didn’t play and Jake Cooper has worn the armband when Hutchinson has been absent.

There is set to be plenty of changes made to the squad this summer, with replacements potentially needed for Pearce and Daniel Ballard in defence.

“At the moment Hutch is the team

captain when Pearcey’s not been there and then Coops is next in line,” Rowett said.

“But it’s not something I’ve given much thought to at the moment.

“Depending on who we sign and the dynamics of the squad we’ll have to try to make sure that remains on merit at the start of next season.

“At this moment in time it’s not something that I’ve necessarily felt the need to change.

“But they [Hutchinson and Cooper] are two really experienced players who have done brilliantly for me. I think there will be a big responsibility for those two to step up those leadership roles even more next year regardless of what we do in terms of titles.

“Those two will be leaders anyway.”

At one point last week Rowett

was the bookies’ favourite for the job and is still high up on the list.

Rowett was asked about those links this week.

“I don’t read that sort of speculation,” Rowett said. “I was told once I was 1/5 for a job and I hadn’t even spoken to the club.

“It just shows you a lot of these things are generated...and I think if you end up having to come out and almost defend yourself on a rumour that’s got no substance, you’d be doing it quite a lot.

“I’ve worked incredibly hard for three years. My focus is on trying to make the team better and trying to push forward and finish higher up the table.

“The rest is not really important to me.”

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT knows Millwall can’t go “gung-ho” in the next transfer window – but he admits he will be trying to push the board “for a little bit more than we’d normally spend”.

The Lions’ record transfer outlay remains the £1.2million paid to Sheffield United for Ryan Leonard in the 2018-19 season.

Millwall made eight senior signings last summer – five of them loans – and only paid one fee, an undisclosed sum for George Saville.

There was only one permanent signing in Rowett’s first summer ahead of the delayed start to the 2020-21 season, Mason Bennett for a small fee from Derby County.

Across those two seasons, Millwall have only paid two other fees, both well under £1million for Maikel Kieftenbeld and George Evans in January 2021.

It means that Rowett has outperformed his budget by leading the side to eighth-, eleventh- and ninthplace finishes in his three seasons at the club.

In contrast to Millwall’s expenditure in recent seasons, Blackburn Rovers, who finished a place above the Lions in 2021-22,

spent £5million on Sam Gallagher in the summer of 2019.

Rowett was asked about this summer’s budget and if he could envision a similar outlay on a player.

“That would be nice!” Rowett said.

“The reality is if there was £5million available you’d want to spend it on two or three players to spread that impact across the squad.

“I understand that we’re not the sort of club to go gung-ho but at the same time I also think we’ve had three years of progress. So as a manager I obviously have to try to put forward a plan to the board and to John [Berylson] that says, ‘I think we should be even better in the next three years’.

“The reality is that’s my job to try to put that across. That will involve the odd player with the odd transfer fee that might be a little bit unusual from what we would normally do, and then the appetite of the board to want to try to do that. Of course, we’ll all sit down and have a conversation about it.

“That’s my job. My job is not to sort of not spend money and not find good players and not move the team forward. My job is the opposite and I have to try and do that within a sensible framework for our club.

“I’ll continue to do that but it doesn’t mean I won’t try to push for a little bit more than we’d normally spend.”

Sales are back to pre-Covid levels as the Lions prepare for a sixth consecutive season in the Championship.

Supporters are snapping up tickets as they hope for another play-off fight, after their side took their topsix challenge to the last or second-last day for the third time in the last five campaigns.

Chief executive Steve Kavanagh updated fans earlier this week.

“We are fast approaching 5,000 season tickets sold ahead of Friday’s (May 20) saver period deadline,” Kavanagh said. “Figures have been trending almost identically to our most successful year of sales in 201819 but we of course hope to surpass that final number of around 8,000 come late July when everything kicks off again.

“We’re delighted with the level of support shown and I urge anyone thinking about purchasing a season ticket to do so before Friday as it guarantees far and away the best value for money when watching Millwall at The Den.” Kavanagh added: “Having Millwall fans in the North Stand for our final home game of the season against Peterborough United was a huge success and contributed significantly to what was a brilliant atmosphere on the day.

“While it won’t be possible to make that a permanent plan at this stage, we will continue to put it in place as and when we can during next season and review it as a potential full-time option for the future.”
