Odesa man thanks locals for show of support Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk An Odesa native living in Rotherhithe whose relative is under Russian occupation has thanked Southwark locals for their support for his homeland in the war.

Builder Stanislav Zhorniak was at an event on Odessa Street in Rotherhithe to show support for Ukraine on Sunday May 8, the day the country celebrates Soviet victory in the Second World War. Mr Zhorniak told the people who gathered at the event, which followed a similar occasion at the start of the war in February, about the situation in Odesa, an important port city in the west of Ukraine that is under bombardment

by Russia. "I thanked the British people for their support, it means a lot to us," he told the News this week.

"The sky is clear here, but my city is under rockets. It is a horrible situation," he said.

As well as being bombed, Odesa is under blockade by the Russian navy, halting grain exports and potentially causing food shortages in various countries.

now under Russian occupation. His parents escaped to the Netherlands, but his uncle and some friends are still there.

"They were threatened a lot by the soldiers" at the start of the occupation, said Mr Zhorniak, who moved to the UK four years ago. "Now it is a bit better... before the soldiers can say things like 'you are Nazis, you are like animals.'"

The Bank branch of the Northern line will reopen next Monday, May 16, after being shut for five months.

The line, which includes Southwark stations London Bridge, Borough, Elephant and Castle and Kennington, was closed for seventeen weeks from January 15 to improve connections between the different parts of the station.

Simon Hughes. He said: "It was really good to have events at the Peace Garden and at Odessa Street on the day they mark remembrance of those killed in wars, and commit to peace and reconciliation."

Sir Simon said he and others at the ceremony want to encourage Southwark Council to support its equivalent part of Kyiv - an inner south-east subdivision of the city. That might be the Darnitskyi or Dniprovskyi district. No formal plans have been put in place yet. which will be finished by the end of the year. That includes step-free access to the Northern line and improved access to the DLR platforms, two new moving walkways, twelve new escalators and two new lifts.

Stuart Harvey, chief capital officer at Transport for London, said: "I'm delighted to confirm that we're on schedule to fully reopen the Northern line on Monday, May 16 after successfully completing the challenging next phase of vital upgrade works at Bank station. I'd like to thank our customers for their patience during this closure.

"The improvements we're making at Bank station will be finished by the end of this year and will totally transform customer journeys through the station. Anyone who's familiar with Bank station will know how its labyrinthian layout can be confusing and time-consuming to navigate.

"Northern line customers now have a new, wider southbound platform and spacious customer concourse. The countdown is on for completing the rest of this major upgrade which is one of the largest and most complicated subterranean railway complexes in the world."

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Millwall-mad boy and his family are celebrating being able to get the drugs he needs to thrive, with an event this week to boost awareness of his rare medical condition and raise funds for charity.

Harvey Brown, 13, has Morquio, an enzyme deficiency which stunts the development of children’s skeletal growth, leaving sufferers with weak bones, a tendency to develop heart disease, and impaired vision and hearing.

We reported in 2016 how Harvey's parents Dean and Vicki set up a petition to get Vimizim, a drug that is giving Harvey a much better quality of life, available on the NHS. He was given a five-year trial and now the family has been told that the drug will be available indefinitely.

Now Harvey and his family are raising awareness and funds for the MPS Society in the Blue marketplace on Saturday from 10am.

"He still gets tired, but he used to get really tired," said Harvey's proud dad Dean. "He never really had a colour before, he was always pale. But now he has a nice colour. When we look back at photos, you can see it definitely is working.

"The lady from his metabolic team, she said he was star pupil with it. He had to go have lung function and walking tests.

She just said that he was fine, passing with flying colours. If he was a pupil, he would be star pupil."

Even though Harvey's condition has been debilitating, it has also helped him make a friend. He and another boy called Josh with a similar condition have been

talking virtually for more than five years.

Harvey and Josh, whose family lives in Dorset, were going to meet up earlier but this had to be postponed because of the Covid-19 lockdown.

But Harvey's Millwall fandom helped bridge the gap. Millwall played Bournemouth on Saturday, May 7, and Harvey and Dean got to meet Josh as part of their trip. "It was really emotional," Dean said. "Well it was for everyone apart from Harvey and Josh, they were just running about playing football together."

Football is Harvey's biggest hobby and he "has got a good little kick on him," Dean said. "He gets tired, but he’s footie mad. If you pull anything out from under his bed to look for something, fifteen footballs will come rolling out."

Look out for Harvey and his family's table, which will be up from 10am at the Blue marketplace on Saturday raising money and awareness for the MPS Society.

Peckham man priced out by pubs builds community bar in his living room Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham man has built a bar in his front room because he’s been priced out by local pubs.

Peter Nandwani 65, lives on Southampton Way Estate, Peckham, and often invites his friends and neighbours in to join him for a drink.

Peter is originally from India and used to run bars in Gibraltar. He said: “I’ve always been a bar person but it’s so expensive and there’s always trouble.

“Now I’ve got my own bar. It’s like a personal nightclub.”

Peter had considered the idea for years, but got “so fed up” during lockdown, he finally got to work on his long-held fantasy. He even added a disco ball to create "nightclub" feel.

As well as spirits, Peter makes

cocktails such as tequila sunrises, pina coladas, bloody marys and, his speciality, Singapore slings.

The bar is held together with screws, not nails, so it can easily be dismantled.

Peter has also set up an outdoor seating area outside his house which he says is open to the local community. “At night, it looks like Barcelona”, he said.

He also wants his MP Harriet Harman to visit the bar, where he hopes to persuade her to gift him the land outside his home, currently owned by the council.

He intends to build a mini railway on the land for kids on the estate. He told the News that it would be safe, with a lockable gate to keep foxes out.

Peter used to be a taxi driver, but retired after three successive heart attacks prompted him to retire.

He now occupies himself with DIY projects and spending quality time with his Yorkshire terrier, Gypsy.

Peckham council estate residents raise their banner to ward off rooftop homes Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Residents on a Peckham estate have raised a banner in opposition to proposed rooftop homes on their blocks.

The council’s proposals have not yet received planning approval, but would see two storeys totalling 32 homes, built on Stanswood Gardens and Marchwood Close, Southampton Way Estate, Peckham.

Residents say there has been a lack of consultation, and fear the development would be too disruptive and imperil the blocks’ structural integrity.

Nick Flowers, Southampton Way TRA chair, said: “This is our estate and people have a stake in this place and if you want to make changes you need to consult.”

Nick says, in March this year, two separate meetings with the project team and landscape architect were cancelled.

In June 2020, the council did consult residents through letters sent out and zoom meetings but Nick says, regardless of their findings, the council “carry forcing on with their project.”

Approximately two-and-a-half weeks ago, the council reportedly commissioned an intrusive site survey to assess the state of foundations, but residents are still waiting on the results.

The development is now on hiatus, with residents awaiting the council’s next announcement.

Help Millwall fan left critical after attack

the safety aspects”, and said the age of the buildings, built at least fifty years ago, might make them unfit for additional stories.

A report by building surveyors Arup, commissioned by Southwark to look into rooftop homes, found buildings built prior to 1970 were more susceptible to “disproportionate collapse”.

‘Disproportionate collapse’ is where the failure of one structural element results in the failure of others.

Niyan Mohammed, who has lived on the estate since 2006, said: “It’s not good to put flats on top because the building is weak!”

Sometimes, where blocks cannot support additional storeys, an exoskeleton is installed to make the addition of rooftop homes possible, which can be disruptive to residents.

The council has promised that no developments would go ahead without total certainty that they are safe.

Residents also complain that their estate, with blocked drains, leaking roofs and cold rooms, desperately needs repairs.

However, if the rooftop homes development goes ahead, it could include a new roof element, external wall insulation, installing a new lift and

associated estate improvements.

Nick said: “Residents have been promised kitchens and bathrooms for decades and are now being told they can only get them if they accept [the rooftop homes].”

However, with a 16,000 person housing waiting list, the council needs to build new homes and rooftop homes are seen as a speedy, cost effective method of doing it. Residents living on the top floor of a block with planned homes would also get automatic rights to move in, whether they are a tenant or leaseholder.

Southwark Council was approached for comment.

The family of a Millwall fan who is in critical condition in hospital are raising funds to support him.

Father of ten Stephen Skinner, 60, was attacked at an away game in Birmingham on April 2 and "no one knows if he will make it", the family said in the fundraiser. He is off sedation as of last Sunday, May 8, but has not woken up yet.

They have already beaten their fundraising goal of £1,000.

Walk in memory of Millwall fan who died tragically young Terry Houlihan

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Friends and family of a Millwall fan who died aged just 59 from a heart attack are raising money to buy a defibrillator and help boost awareness of their importance in saving lives.

Terry Houlihan died last June after suffering a heart attack on May 25 in Maidstone in Kent. His daughters said he would have survived if there had been a defibrillator nearby.

They are walking 32 miles from Maidstone United's Gallagher Stadium to Millwall ground the Den on June 11, to raise money for a defibrillator through charity London Hearts.

The walk will go past Draughts, Terry's local pub in Eltham in southeast London. After the Den, the group will go onto the Blue Anchor on Southwark Park Road for pie and mash.

Terry's daughters Stevie and Carlie said in a statement: "On the 25th May our dad was on his way to work and sadly had a cardiac arrest, numerous people helped give him CPR, but unfortunately our dad passed away three weeks later. Had there been a defibrillator nearby Dad would have still been alive today.

"We and close friends of our dad’s are doing a 32-mile walk to from [Maidstone's] Gallagher stadium

to the Den as Dad was a lifelong Millwall supporter to raise funds for a [defibrillator] and raise more awareness as to how important [they] are- they are the difference between life and death.

"Dad was only 59, fit and healthy and taken far to soon. Our dad, our hero, a true Millwall lion."

The family will also hold a separate fundraising event for defibrillators on July 23.

family demands answers after their mum, 93, was battered to death in care home Exclusive

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The daughter of a Bermondsey woman in her nineties beaten to death in her care home by a mentally ill man 30 years her junior has demanded to know why he was housed there.

Eileen Dean, 93, was hit with a metal walking stick by Alexander Rawson, 63, on January 3, 2021 in Fieldside, a care home in Catford, in Lewisham and died soon after.

Rawson had previously been in Lewisham Hospital, first in the main part of the hospital, where he twice attacked staff, with a butter knife and scissors, and then in a psychiatric unit run by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM).

At a meeting run by SLaM, a psychiatrist, Rawson’s social worker and a Fieldside staff member decided to move him into the care home, which caters for vulnerable people with dementia.

Rawson was housed in the room next to Eileen. He told his partner several times he was scared and confused in text messages. He scared a Fieldside staff member by waving his stick at her and swearing. And less than two weeks after he moved in, he killed Eileen.

“She was a very happy person, she was hard-working all her life,” Eileen’s daughter Georgie Hempshaw said. “She loved life.” Eileen was born in Bermondsey and grew up in the Dockhead area, living through the Depression and the Blitz as a child. She worked in factories like Peek Freans on Drummond Road, and the Pearce Duff custard factory on Spa Road. Eileen eventually became a typist.

She met her husband Charlie, got married and had three children, and eventually five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Charlie died after some 40 years of marriage, at which point Georgie, the youngest of the three children, began looking after her mother. “It started out with me just caring for her, doing her garden, taking her to the hairdressers, things like that,” Georgie said. She was quite independent in those days. She enjoyed life.”

But eventually Georgie realised that her mother needed more help, and she found her a sheltered flat in Chislehurst, in the south-east London suburbs, where she lived for about ten years. It was while in this flat that Eileen was diagnosed with dementia. She managed to go on with support from her daughter and a local day centre where she would go three times a week.

When the lockdown happened these services stopped. “It was a horrible time - we were struggling to keep her going,” Georgie said. “Mum was going downhill fairly rapidly, because she wasn’t having any interaction. She would have passed away to be honest.”

Social services did an emergency assessment, deciding Eileen needed to be in a care home. Fieldside in Catford was one of two homes they were offered, because it needed to be a home that catered for dementia patients. Eileen

moved in in June 2020.

“I’m very angry about it to be honest,” Georgie said. “I did all the due diligence I could. I went and met with the owner of the home. He promised to keep her safe, which obviously he didn’t. It was a let down, totally.

But at first Eileen seemed “like a different person” at Fieldside, buoyed by the fresh social contact she was having with her new neighbours. “She was so much more happy and content. She didn’t have to worry about anything, it was all laid on. She even met a little friend.

“I haven’t got any criticism of the staff.

It was a nice place, they treated them like human beings.”

Eileen caught Covid over Christmas 2020 and was self-isolating, but was apparently asymptomatic. She was killed on the first Sunday of the new year.

“That night we had no inkling,” Georgie said. “We had police at the door in the early hours of the morning. They knocked at the door and said she had been attacked. We ran to the hospital, it was horrendous there because of Covid.

Then I was given a list of all her injuries, I can’t tell you how many injuries she had.

It was horrific.

“I didn’t even recognise my mum when I went to see her, I thought it was some other poor old lady. I had to look at her feet - she had quite distinctive toes.

“She shouldn’t have had to go through

that, she should have been able to live out her last years peacefully.”

Georgie said she has run the gamut of emotions after her mother’s death, including guilt. “My counsellor said to me ‘you’ve got to stop doing that because if you keep blaming yourself you’re going to drive yourself mad’.

“It wasn’t something I’ve done, everything I did for my mum was out of love and keeping her safe. I’m angry at the institutions, I looked after my mum for the best part of 30 years. I kept her safe. And then you hand over that responsibility, you put your trust in a care home, an institution. And they let you down…

“I just feel we didn’t have a choice. No one said, ‘do you want this person living next to your mum?’”

Rawson has been found responsible by the Old Bailey for the death of Eileen, although because of his mental state he did not stand trial or enter a plea. He was sentenced in December last year to an indefinite hospital order.

Sixteen months on from her mother’s death, Georgie said it feels “like an open wound” to be still waiting for a safeguarding report from Lewisham Council and a report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which inspects care homes and hospitals.

The CQC did produce a report from an inspection of Fieldside about three weeks after Eileen’s death, but “found no

evidence that people had been harmed” - while saying safety at the home needed improving. The CQC said it did not reference the killing because of the police investigation, which was ongoing at the time.

SLaM has shared a report with Georgie, but she said it was “a load of rubbish”.

Georgie said she wanted to know more about the decision-making process that led to Rawson being moved into Fieldside.

“I don’t understand how the care home said that they could deal with him. Did they know about his aggressiveness?”

The Ladywell unit of Lewisham Hospital, where Rawson was treated before being moved to Fieldside, was described as "not fit for purpose" by the CQC in its latest inspection of SLaM in August 2021. In several wards in the unit, "there was not enough individual psychology support for patients," the report said.

As horrific as Rawson’s killing of Eileen was, Georgie said she sometimes thinks about how it could have been even worse.

“What if he’d gone on a rampage and killed four others?”

We reported this week on how at least 50 current or former SLaM patients have killed people between 2003 and 2018, although it is unclear how this compares with other mental health trusts, given the lack of publicly available data.

Referencing the story of Maureen and Edward Watkins from last week, Georgie said: “I just think these deaths are happening because no one’s joining the dots.”

The Watkins family demanded that SLaM change its working practices to make sure that terrible incidents like theirs, when Edward killed his 75-yearold mother Maureen just days after being discharged from the Maudsley, are not repeated.

Georgie said that she wanted to know how often SLaM is discharging its patients into the care sector.

“It feels like everyone is standing back and waiting for us to disappear. If there’s not people like us banging at the door of these institutions saying hold on I want to know why this happened, it’s going to keep going on. Some other poor old lady or poor old man is going to suffer…

“If we all stand together and say this happened to my parents, this happened to my brother, this happened to my aunt, maybe we can stop this from happening.

I just don’t want it to happen to anyone else.”

Despite being downgraded to ‘requires improvement’ by CQC for safety and leadership, Fieldside says on its website that it “meets all external ratings with a high standard”. The News asked Fieldside via email for details on the decisionmaking process of taking in Rawson, if it was still taking on patients from SLaM, and what lessons it has learned from Eileen’s death. The care home did not respond. Reached via telephone, the manager said she could not answer the queries because the director of the home was on holiday.

CQC said: “After we were notified Eileen Dean had died after being attacked by another resident at Fieldside Care Home, Catford, we inspected the service to assess the standards of care it provided to people. We found there were areas the service needed to improve to ensure it was taking all reasonable steps to ensure people’s safety, but we did not find its residents were at immediate risk of harm.

“Our condolences are with Mrs Dean’s family and we continue to monitor the service closely to ensure people receive standards of care to which they have a right to expect.

The News also asked SLaM what the decision making process was that allowed Rawson to be placed in the home, but the trust refused to comment saying a report would soon be made available.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk At least fifty current or former patients of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) killed someone or are suspected of killing someone between 2003 and 2018, the News can reveal.

The data, released in response to a Freedom of Information request by charity Hundred Families, shows “shocking” failings by the trust, a spokesperson for the organisation said.

Mental illness was considered a factor in at least fifteen of these killings, the data shows. But Julian Hendy, who provides information for families of victims of mental health-related homicides through Hundred Families, said that this did not necessarily mean that the other killings were not at least driven in part by psychiatric disorders. It is also unclear whether any of the killings took place before they were seen at SLaM - a spokesperson said they may or may not have been.

There could be as many as 55 SLaM patients who have killed people, because the datasets, released at three different points, overlap due to delays in reporting and court

proceedings.

Mr Hendy said that the figures are “truly shocking”.

He added: “There’s a complete lack of local information about the numbers of seriously mentally ill people who kill others, which is why we make regular Freedom of information requests to mental health trusts…

“They show that year after year severely mentally people in south London are unable to access the care and treatment they need to keep them, their families, and others safe and well.

“These are not rare incidents, they are regular, repeated, and often preventable tragedies which affect entire families and whole communities. This has been going on for far too long and it’s not acceptable.

“South London and Maudsley need to demonstrate they are truly learning from these incidents, that the same failings in care are not repeated, and that patients and the public are protected.”

The families of victims of SLaM patients discharged from hospitals in this week’s and last week’s News have also questioned the risk assessments that led to the mentally ill killers being let out in public.

The trust has suffered from overcrowding in recent years. The News reported in 2018 how 31 patients at SLaM facilities were left sleeping on sofas or on temporary facilities because of high demand. The latest report by the hospital inspector the Care Quality Commission (CQC) said that safety at the trust ‘requires improvement’, although SLaM is rated ‘good’ overall.

SLaM provides support for more than 50,000 people in inpatient services and in the community. In response to the Freedom of Information request, the trust pointed out that it serves two inner London boroughs - Southwark and Lambeth - with high levels of drug use, poverty and crime, that “inevitably” lead to homicides.

Dr Michael Holland, medical director at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust said: “Every year we strive to improve the lives of over 40,000 people who use our services in the local community, helping them recover from mental illness and reduce the risk of self-harm and any potential risk to others.

“Whilst we can never eliminate all risk, optimising the quality and resourcing of mental healthcare is the best way to reduce any risks that individuals might pose to themselves or others. This is the best way to reduce any risks individuals might pose to themselves or others.

“We recognise the devastating impact on the families of victims of homicides. Incidents involving people using mental health services are extremely rare. Working with partner agencies, we thoroughly investigate these incidents and use any learning to continue improving the care and treatment we provide.

“Mental illness affects one in four people at some point in their lives.

Stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness can stop people from seeking the help and support they need. We will continue to work carefully and closely with our patients, carers, and community to overcome this.”

Diane Cunningham, who lives on Southwark Park Road, has been using the Lions Food Bank at Millwall Community Trust on Bolina Road since November last year.

Diane said she was initially reluctant to start using the food bank because of the "stigma" that can sometimes be attached.

But that week in November was particularly hard for the born-and-bred Bermondsey woman. "When I came, they were quite welcoming. I was anxious but they said 'If you’re not even sure, just come for a cup of tea. It makes a difference because I know that there’s no judgement. It was an olive branch right when I needed it."

After she went the first time, Diane immediately phoned her mother, who also lives in Bermondsey. Her sister, who has children herself, also goes to the food hub.

As well as food, Diane has bought school shirts and winter coats for her three children, aged 11, 13 and 15. "It's been a godsend. I look forward to going every week now."

Diane was worried that her children might be embarrassed, but she took her son in

half-term and the next week he wanted to go back with her. "I said 'you have school, little man!'"

And Diane said part of why she likes going to the food hub is the company. She said she has had painful embolisms for a year since getting the Covid-19 vaccine and "getting out is a bit of a bugger".

She added: "I've had it really rough but getting out and meeting people over a cup of tea helps me feel a bit better."

She hasn't had a job recently because she has been looking after her autistic children, but is trying to get back into work.

Staff at the food hub have helped Diane "keep her chin up" and even given her some advice about starting work again.

The food hub is open for collections on Fridays. It was launched by recentlyretired Millwall Lionesses goalkeeper Kelly Webster last year.

Cost of Living Crisis: Help at hand with firm’s food voucher scheme

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Young families in Southwark struggling with the cost of living crisis can get free vouchers used to buy fresh fruit and veg at independent market stalls and green grocers.

Alexandra Rose has distributed ‘Rose vouchers’ to children’s centres across the borough. Families with a child under five-years-old, and pregnant women, are eligible for the scheme.

The vouchers, which can be collected on a weekly basis, are worth between £4 and £6 per child, and you can buy baby formula as well as food.

Fatima Briscoe, a mother of four who has recently started using the service said: “It’s hard to ask somebody for help because I’m not used to that. I’ve never depended on benefits and have always had income coming in.

“But Alexandra Rose has been a blessing because now I don’t have to worry as much.”

The vouchers can be redeemed at East Street Market, with three separate traders in Peckham, and now at the Borough Food

Cooperative.

Eleanor Wilton, communications and project manager at the charity, said demand for the vouchers had gone up recently.

In April, grocery prices were 5.9 per cent higher than April last year, the biggest increase since December 2011, according to research company Kantar.

‘Healthy Start’, a government-backed scheme that provides young families with healthy food and milk has traditionally been an important provider of healthy food to struggling families.

But in March, the scheme switched from physical to paper vouchers. Many found their new digital cards were getting declined at the till and some people never received them at all.

Alexandra Rose, which has supported 2,454 children since its inception, is helping to plug the gap left by the ‘Healthy Start’ chaos.

Founded by Queen Alexandra, wife of Edward VII, in 1912, Alexandra Rose has been supporting families in poverty for 110 years.

Shopper left fuming at surrey Quays Exclusive

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Rotherhithe man has hit out after being fined for allegedly spending seventeen hours parked in Surrey Quays shopping centre - despite living a minute’s drive away.

“There’s no reason for me to be parked up there for that long,” said Russell Lewell, who has lived in the area for 40 years.

Mr Lewell said he thought the £60 fine came from two separate times he was in the car park on the same day in late October 2021, which the cameras would have counted as one long stretch. The fine only came in last week.

“It gave me a sleepless night… I wanted to go down there and burn the place down,” he said, adding that he was joking. “It’s extortion… it’s an absolute liberty. It’s ridiculous, they’re ripping people off.”

Mr Lewell said he had contacted Trading Standards for help but he has not heard back yet.

Family adopts kitten after finding it dumped by bins Exclusive

Sixteen-year-old Julia was taking rubbish out of her family home not far from Millwall stadium the Den when she saw a backpack lying with the binbags.

She thought this was unusual and on looking closer saw that there was something moving inside. Julia opened the bag and saw that there was a tiny kitten inside.

"I took the kitten and came home crying," she told the News. Now the family have adopted the eight-week-

This is not the first time a driver has allegedly been fined incorrectly in the Surrey Quays shopping centre car park.

The British Parking Association, which maintains a code of practice for the industry, told the News at the time that it supported the use of automatic numberplate recognition (ANPR) cameras to manage parking but that complaints over double visits were common.

The cameras “can be extremely efficient, effective and precise” said a representative of the group, which “brings with it a responsibility to use it carefully.”

“The main criticism is multiple visits, which are sometimes not identified and which can lead to false enforcement for overstaying, non-payment or incorrect payment,” the spokesperson said.

Wheelchair-bound mum has nightmares of burning alive after being ‘abandoned’ in her upstairs walworth flat Exclusive

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A disabled Walworth mum with prolapsed discs and no feeling in her legs feels “doomed” because her housing association won’t move her to a ground-floor flat, even though she can’t use the stairs.

Odete Figueira Rufino Pires, 42, of Rosa Parks House, Munton Road, has nightmares of burning alive because if there is a fire, and the lifts break, there would be no escape.

Housebound, unable to work, and rarely going outside in case the lifts are broken when she returns, she says her housing association Peabody have refused her rehousing application.

Odete said: “I’ve always been a tough person and a lot has happened to me in the past but I just can’t continue being strong and trying. Nobody cares. I feel like a nobody. Even if you fight and you’re

strong it doesn’t matter anymore.”

Odete’s health deteriorated in 2018 when, then a bus driver, she experienced dizzy spells when checking her mirrors.

One day, her spinal discs collapsed and she began struggling to walk. In December 2020, Odete was hospitalised again.

In rehab, it was clear her legs weren’t working: “I was in the pool and couldn’t move my legs and I started to scream. I felt

Graham Sykes from Forest Hill is raising money for Evelina after doctors at the Waterloo hospital treated his baby son Ronnie, who just turned one, when he skated close to death with a dangerous heart condition aged just three weeks. Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome causes the heart to beat abnormally fast for periods of time and if left untreated can be fatal.

Graham, 36, said: “Ronnie was born on April Fools’ Day last year and as far as we could tell as new parents he seemed like a normal healthy newborn baby.

"But a few weeks after his birth my wife and I realised something wasn’t quite right. He didn’t seem like himself and he looked like he was in pain. His condition got worse and he started struggling to breathe. After contacting

111 we were advised to take him to A&E. What transpired was one of the most harrowing experiences of our lives.

“He was extremely ill and we were warned it was touch and go. We felt so powerless as we watched by his bedside in the resuscitation room a team of medics desperately trying to keep him alive throughout the night. It was an extremely scary time. We were terrified.”

Ronnie spent six nights at Evelina London before being transferred home to recover. He is now a healthy toddler and celebrated his first birthday at the beginning of April.

Graham said: “Ronnie turning one felt really special after he was so ill. We’re planning a big celebration in May with our friends and family.

Graham is taking part in the London Marathon in October to raise funds for Evelina London Children’s Charity.

“I really believe that if it wasn’t for the amazing care at Evelina London he wouldn’t be here now."

She says she asked Peabody to move her to a ground floor flat in February 2021 but they couldn’t during the Covid-19 lockdown.

In August 2021, she reapplied, attaching a form from her occupational therapist that said she was "housebound", depressed, and "in chronic pain".

It noted that, because her flat was not

"disable adapted" she was paying for someone to do housework for her, which was impacting the family's finances.

But in October, Peabody rejected her rehousing application, telling her it could be "months or years" before she would be moved and to consider "moving outside of London".

She has considered appealing the decision but said: “They’re powerful, I’m not. They can get lawyers, I can’t. They’ve got money, I don’t.”

On Saturday, Thursday 28 April, she returned from her sister’s birthday at 11pm to find her lift was broken. The desperate mother had to sit in the dark outside her home until 4am before a technician finally came to repair the lift.

Odete also says her bathroom is illequipped for a disabled person and she needs help every time she washes, so can’t as often as she’d like.

When she leaves the house, she has to ask her nine-year-old daughter to check if she smells. She said: “I’m not proud of myself anymore.”

Though it has since been repaired, the block’s downstairs corridors used to regularly flood and pour into the electrical boxes, which Odete says was a fire hazard.

She currently lives with her ex-partner, also her daughter’s father, who helps with childcare and financial support. She doesn’t know how she'll cope if he leaves.

A Peabody spokesperson said: “Having visited Ms Pires this week to discuss her situation, it’s clear that we haven’t communicated with her as well as we should have done. She is understandably upset and needs our support to resolve a number of different issues.

“The recurring lift fault is a problem we need to solve as soon as possible and we have instructed a specialist engineer to investigate for us. We have also asked for Ms Pires’ medical priority to be reviewed urgently and our Head of Neighbourhoods in Southwark will now be a named person for her to speak to.

The team is putting together an action plan to make sure she gets the help she needs going forward.”

man arrested after supermarket crash

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A man has been arrested for allegedly fleeing the scene after police said he drove into the side of a Tesco in Rotherhithe while under the influence last Thursday morning, May 5.

The crash took place at about 6'o clock in the morning at the corner of Plough Way and Seafarer Way. By 10.30am the car had been taken away but the shop was still taped off and rubble was strewn across the pavement - including a wheel that appeared to have been torn off the car in the accident.

A store worker at the scene said that no one was in the shop when it happened, and luckily it was too early for children to have been walking past on their way to school on the busy residential street.

The car appears to have been stopped by a pillar inside the shop, otherwise it

could have caused much more damage.

A Met Police spokesperson said: "Police were called at 06:01hrs on Thursday, 5 May to reports of a car in collision with a lamp post and a building at Sirius House, SE16.

"Police and London Fire Brigade attended. The vehicle has been recovered from the scene.

"A male, no further details, was arrested for leaving the scene of a collision and driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and failing to provide a breath sample.

"He was taken to a south London police station where he remains at this time. No persons were injured."

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called 6.09am at today (5 May) to reports of a road traffic collision on Plough Way, Southwark.

“We sent an ambulance crew, and treated one man at the scene, before taking him to hospital.”

Southwark turned a slightly deeper shade of red last Thursday night, as Labour increased their control over the council with three new councillors.

London Bridge and West Bermondsey, previously one of five Liberal Democrat wards, went to Labour after a hard-fought local campaign.

That means Southwark now has 52 Labour councillors, up from 47 coming into the election and 49 after the last election. The Liberal Democrats have eleven, down from fourteen before the vote. No other party has any councillors.

Southwark Labour group leader Kieron Williams, who held onto his seat in the Camberwell Green ward, was in buoyant mood in the aftermath of his first local election victory. He said: "It’s been a great night for Southwark Labour and a recognition of the work we’ve done over the past four years, supporting people through Covid and delivering on our manifesto promises. We take that responsibility incredibly seriously, and we’ll be working incredibly hard to deliver even more for them over the next four years."

Discussing the gain in London Bridge and West Bermondsey, he said: "We’ve got some fantastic candidates in London Bridge and West Bermondsey who have worked incredibly hard and who I know will keep working very hard for the residents there, and it’s fantastic to have residents choosing to support Labour."

Speaking several days after the vote, Cllr Williams said he “absolutely” wanted to “work hand in hand” with Southwark residents to tackle the housing crisis, despite fierce criticism from some quarters about Labour’s infill programme to build homes on existing estates. Asked if this was a sign that Southwark residents want more action on the climate emergency, Cllr Williams said the overall result of the election showed voters recognised Labour’s “ambitious” green agenda.

No other party gained a foothold in the council, meaning that Southwark remains a two-party state, although the Greens ran Labour close in Nunhead and Queen's Road, previously an extremely safe ward.

The Conservatives were unsuccessful in their push to claw back Dulwich Village on the back of the divisive low-traffic neighbourhood.

The provisional turnout was 33.9 per cent, roughly flat on 2018. Turnout was lower across much of London this year. Turnout in Southwark varied from the late-twenties in wards like Faraday and Chaucer to more than 60 per cent in Dulwich Village.

Cllr Williams said: “I would like to see higher turnout in the local elections, but I think there’s lower awareness of the local elections because they sadly don’t get the coverage in the national news.”

The Liberal Democrats were philosophical in light of the loss of London Bridge and West Bermondsey. Leader Hamish McCallum said: "It's always sad to lose good councillors. However, this was one of the most marginal wards on a night where Labour are making huge gains elsewhere in the capital." But the party's national leader Ed Davey said only a few days before the election that Southwark was one of the areas where the Lib Dems would be "fighting Labour".

As in councils across the UK, Southwark's vote counting was an all-night affair. Candidates and party operatives gathered at Southwark's Tooley Street headquarters to monitor the vote-counting and exchange gossip.

Former Liberal Democrat MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark Sir Simon Hughes was in attendance, although the incumbent Neil Coyle formerly of Labour, until he had the whip suspended - was notably absent.

Labour MP for Dulwich and West Norwood Helen Hayes was also at the count, although Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman was not.

Staff from across the council's various departments volunteered to count the votes under the watchful eyes of candidates. Piers Corbyn, standing in Faraday ward for his anti-lockdown Let London Live party, said he was satisfied with the vote-counting.

Labour's victory came on a good night for the party across London, taking Wandsworth, Westminster and Barnet councils from the Conservatives, although they lost Croydon, Harrow and Tower Hamlets.

The Tories had controlled Wandsworth since 1978.

Monkeypox case reported at Guy's and St Thomas'

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A case of monkeypox, a rare infectious disease normally found in Central Africa, has been confirmed at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, but authorities are reassuring the public that it's not easily spread between people.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed the case on Sunday May 8, saying that the patient, who had recently travelled to Nigeria, was receiving treatment at a specialist isolation unit.

The disease was first identified in laboratory monkeys in 1958 and is spread through animals’ bites, scratches and bodily fluids, and can

cause rashes, fever and muscle aches.

Dr Colin Brown, Director of Clinical and Emerging Infections, UKHSA, said: ”It is important to emphasise that monkeypox does not spread easily between people and the overall risk to the general public is very low.

“We are working with NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSEI) to contact the individuals who have had close contact with the case prior to confirmation of their infection, to assess them as necessary and provide advice.

“UKHSA and the NHS have well established and robust infection control procedures for dealing with cases of imported infectious disease and these will be strictly followed.”

Camberwell man denies robbing British cyclist Mark Cavendish

A Camberwell man has denied robbing famous Tour-de-France cyclist Mark Cavendish and his wife Peta in their own home.

On Thursday May 4, Chelmsford Crown Court heard that in the early hours of Saturday 27 November, a number of men burst into Cavendish’s home in the Ongar area of Essex, and assaulted the cyclist in front of his children.

At the hearing Oludewa Okorosobo, 28, of Flaxman Road, Camberwell and Romario Henry, 31, of Bell Green, Lewisham, plead not guilty to two counts of robbery.

They will now face trial on October 3.

A third defendant, 27-year-old Ali Sesay, was not asked to enter a plea to the charges.

Essex police said no-one sustained serious injuries during the incident.

In a statement released at the time, Mr Cavendish said: “As I’m sure you will understand, this incident has left our family extremely distressed – not just myself and Peta but our children as well, who feared for their lives and are now struggling with the aftereffects.

“No one should have to experience the sort of violence and threats made against us, let alone this happening in a family home – a place where everyone should feel safe.”

At the time of the incident 36-yearold Cavendish was at home recovering from a brutal crash in the Ghent Six

monkeypox within a few weeks but cases can cause permanent vision loss and sometimes death.

The rash normally begins on the face before spreading to other parts of the body. It then forms a scab which falls off.

The disease is most prevalent in Central and West Africa and the first human cases were identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970.

In June 2021, the World Health Organization reported that only six cases had ever been confirmed in the UK. In 2003, there was an outbreak of the virus in the USA which infected 47 people, with the origin being traced to a shipment of small mammals imported from Ghana.

Mr Sesay, of Holding Street, Rainham, east London was also remanded in custody and was due before the court for a case management hearing last Friday May 6.

Corbyn fined for reportedly calling NHS staff ‘murderers’

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Piers Corbyn, Walworth resident and brother of the former Labour leader, has reportedly been fined £250 for accusing NHS workers at Guy's Hospital of "murdering people".

Corbyn, 75, is said to have given a "cease and desist" letter to staff at a Guy's Hospital vaccination clinic at London Bridge on 18 January this year.

He and a second man, aged 44, who was fined £200, reportedly refused to leave the hospital, even after police were called.

Corbyn from Walworth, south-east London, told Westminster Magistrates' Court he had been arrested fifteen times since the pandemic began, and said: "We were not there trying to obstruct people doing anything."

In a national newspaper article, it said Corbyn had arrived with a group of anti-vaxxers at Guy's Hospital, with the letter that they claimed was to

prevent NHS staff from administering the Covid-19 vaccine.

Corbyn is said to have told Chelsea Butcher, a nursing sister: “We are not leaving, you are murdering people here,” and another member of the group said, “This is a crime scene,” Westminster magistrates court heard.

He and his co-defendant must pay an additional £234 in costs and other charges.

Corbyn stood as a councillor in Faraday ward for his party, Let London Live, in the recent local elections.

He received 200 votes and was not elected but did beat two Liberal Democrats and one Conservative candidate.

The News reported that, at a hustings in Southwark Cathedral last month, Corbyn interrupted proceedings.

He accused organisers of "not believing in democracy" because they had not invited him to sit on the panel.

Amir Eden, chair of Living Bankside, said he had not been included because Let London Live had no elected officials.

Cyclist dies after collision with a bus on Kennington Road

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A 62-year-old cyclist has died after a collision involving a bus on Kennington Road, at the junction with Lambeth Road.

Police named the victim as Oswald Mapp. Officers were called to the scene of the accident at 10.11pm last Monday, May 2.

Mr Mapp was taken to hospital but, despite medical staff 's best efforts, was pronounced dead on Wednesday May 4. His family has been informed.

The bus driver stopped at the scene and is still assisting officers with their enquiries. No arrests have been

made.

Detective Sergeant Nick Bale of the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command said: “The scene of the collision is a busy road and I am sure that there were witnesses who have not yet come forward. I urge those people to get in touch.

“Similarly, I would ask any motorist who was in the area at the time of the collision to check their dash cam and if they have footage of the collision, or the events surrounding it, to contact us without delay."

A Southwark youth worker has hit out at police after three staff members for his mentoring organisation were stopped and searched.

Sayce Holmes-Lewis, who runs Mentivity, which supports at-risk young people in London, said the Met were "not listening" to concerns about the controversial police tactic.

The incident in question took place on the Walworth Road on April 12. Mr Holmes-Lewis posted two videos to social media on Wednesday afternoon (May 4) which show three Mentivity workers being stopped and searched by territorial support group (TSG) officers while they were out to get lunch.

Police said that the three young men were searched because officers were looking for weapons and drug dealing in the area, and the men appeared to disperse and walk away when they saw the police. The men said they worked for

Camberwell Queens to celebrate Platinum jubilee

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Longfield Hall are putting on an LGBTQ cabaret event to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee, thanks to funding from Arts Council England (ACE).

‘Love is Live - the Platinum Edition’ will show at Longfield Hall, Knatchbull Road, Camberwell, at 7pm, Tuesday 24 June, thanks to £7,100 of funding courtesy of the ‘Let’s Create Jubilee Fund’.

Members of the LGBTQ community aged 21 and over will also be invited to cabaret workshops throughout May and into June, where they can develop their performance skills.

Laura Harling, artistic director at Longfield Hall said: “We are so excited to be able to deliver our 'Love is Live' project.

“The funding from ACE will enable our local community to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s jubilee whilst also offering our South London LGBT+ community an opportunity to develop new skills in performance and to celebrate together at our Love is Live Platinum Edition cabaret on 24 June.

One of the men who was searched was white and the other two were black.

"When you get to the crux of why they’re

doing this, it’s not about race, it's about class," Mr Holmes-Lewis said. "It's not just the black British community. This is more commonplace than that."

The incident has been reviewed by the police's directorate of professional standards, who said they found nothing wrong with it. Mr Holmes-Lewis disagreed, saying that the behaviour of the officers was rude and aggressive.

"The way that they treat people is very important. It just shows the lack of relationship in general between the police and the community.

Mr Holmes-Lewis, who was stopped and searched himself while taking food to a bereaved friend in lockdown in 2020, said he was going to have a meeting with borough commander Colin Wingrove and the leader of Southwark Council.

"We’ve all grown up around it, I want to be at the forefront of challenging it," he said.

Responding to the video online, Labour council leader Kieron Williams said: "To see young men who are working so hard to support our community treated in this way is deeply upsetting. I will be taking this up with the MET. They must change."

Police say that stop and search is a "vital tool" in preventing violence. Officers said in April that they were "redoubling our efforts to listen, engage and explain why we do what we do, to make improvements based of individuals’ ‘lived experience’ and to build trust".

A spokesperson for the police said in response to this incident: "On the afternoon of Tuesday, 12 April officers from the Met’s Taskforce were deployed in Southwark as part of an intelligence-led operation to tackle gun and knife-enabled robberies and linked drug dealing.

"At 13:40hrs, officers’ attention was drawn to a group of men in Walworth Road. The group appeared to disperse on seeing the officers, with one person walking away, before regrouping again after officers had passed.

"The men were stopped and were informed that they would be searched, for weapons and drugs. No force was used and the men were not handcuffed during the search. Nothing of concern was found and no further action was taken.

"We are aware of a video on social media showing part of the incident.

"The officers were also recording the incident on body worn video and the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has reviewed the available footage.

"They found that the officers had acted courteously and had communicated well throughout the incident, explaining to the men who had been stopped about why stop and search is used as a strategic policing tool to combat priorities such as violence and drugs, but empathising about the impact we know it can have on those who are stopped. The review did not identify any wrongdoing on the part of the officers involved."

We need to know more about these shocking homicide figures

T

he figures we reported this week on homicides by patients treated by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) are shocking, but need a lot of caveats and qualifications.

First, we don’t yet have the context for these numbers. How many patients or former patients at other mental health trusts in London and England have also killed people? SLaM could be an outlier, or killings could be happening at a similar rate to other trusts.

Second, SLaM treats tens of thousands of people across four boroughs - Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Croydon. All of these boroughs have high levels of crime, deprivation and drug and alcohol abuse. SLaM argues that all of these may have played roles in at least some of the killings.

Third, the courts found that mental health was a factor in around fifteen of the killings, not all fifty. But this caveat itself has to be caveated - Julian Hendy of the Hundred Families charity, whose investigation revealed these figures, argued that this doesn’t mean psychiatric disorders should be completely discounted in these killings.

Finally, it may be a capacity and funding issue with SLaM - inspectors reported in 2018 how more than 30 patients were sleeping in waiting rooms waiting for a bed on a ward.

Whatever the case, we also need to know that more is being done to keep our elderly and vulnerable people safe, and to ensure that psychiatric patients are getting the best care they possibly can.

These qualifications do not detract from the senseless horror of the stories of the two victims we have reported on in the past two weeks. We still do not have proper answers for either.

Why was the violent and threatening Alexander Rawson deemed suitable by SLaM and others to be living in a care home for eldlerly dementia patients? Why was he put in the room next door to Eileen Dean in the care home and allowed to wander around unsupervised? And, in our story last week, why was the frail 75-year-old Maureen Watkins not told about her son’s violent behaviour on the ward before he was released back into her care, and before he killed her?

Georgie Hempshaw, Eileen’s daughter, described not knowing more about the circumstances of her mother’s killing as like having an open wound. She and her family need to know more. It is disappointing that the trust refused to comment on her tragic death.

Middling Middle at the National Last Wednesday, I found myself in a kitchen in Essex, in the early hours of the morning, watching the end, or perhaps the middle, of a marriage, writes Madeleine Kelly...

I was at the National Theatre to see The Middle, the second play in David Eldridge’s series on modern relationships; the first being The Beginning, the next, one can only imagine, being The End. The play, wonderfully brought to life by Polly Findlay who also directed the previous instalment, was entirely captivating, softly funny and deeply heartbreaking but, in the end, quite predictable.

The play opens on a couple in their kitchen, they make light talk, they cannot sleep. And then, the sentence that

It has also had critically acclaimed success with big stage revivals on our shores through the years. The latest of these revivals is a Bard Summerscape production, that after a Tony Awardwinning run on Broadway in 2019, comes to the Young Vic This story of cowboys and farmers looking to find love with the local sweethearts in smalltown rural Oklahoma gets a truly modern retelling, without changing a word.

The first impact comes from the staging, in the thrust with a sevenpiece orchestra sat at the head of the stage, and with tables bordering the audience as if we were guests at the Box Social that is at the heart of the drama.

Brightly lit and clad in light pine, this staging had more purpose than just the aesthetic. The singing, especially in the chorus numbers, bounced about the space and left notes hanging around, and the bright lighting reflecting off the pine opened the space up. With Scott Zielinski’s

threatens to blow them apart: ‘I don’t think I love you anymore’.

Maggie is dissatisfied, she is bored by the disappointment of her life and has endured the heartache of parenting almost entirely without Gary who has either been busy working or giving in to his daughter’s every whim.

Clare Rushbrook and Daniel Ryan play the couple with enough tenderness and humour to make the audience believe that where there is now loneliness and distance there has been great love and warmth. Rushbrook lends Clare a sadness that takes the edge off the cruelty she displays to Gary as she slowly unpicks their marriage and their life. Meanwhile, Daniel Ryan softens his character; in his hands, Gary admitting his fumbling

attempt to buy two vibrators as the cureall for their marriage is a believable act of love rather than lust.

With the help of almost uncanny set design, Eldridge has faithfully reproduced all the trappings of the upwardly-mobile middle-class world. The endless desire for security that leads to the too big house, the unnecessary prep-schooling, the one or two ‘good holidays’ that justify all the hours chained to a job that doesn’t feed you. The result is a gripping, occasionally funny and ultimately tragic portrayal of a middle-class life.

But this representation, whilst engaging, is the play’s downfall. Beyond the quite predictable tick list of middleclass boredom, after weeks of reports of yet another war, of the rising cost of

lighting design mainly being the bright exposing house lights, scenes when this was changed up with colour or with blackouts, punctuated the show well and created focus in the show’s emotional and troubling exchanges.

A highlight being in blackout whilst Curly is gaslighting Jud, with added projections of Jud’s face on the back wall, this ramped up the sinisterness

of the moment.

This production is at its best when delving into the darker sides of the characters. The men are either hopelessly pathetic at best or uncomfortably manipulative at worst. The women, on the other hand, now have a little more depth, either in the form of enablers like Aunt Eller or they have more agency.

The Middle asks no more of its audience than, for the duration of the play, to feel for the couple on stage. There is nothing wrong with theatre for entertainment’s sake but this month, maybe even this year, serving up middle-class misery for the masses was a middle of the road offering.

Marisha Wallace’s performance as Ado Annie Carnes moves the role from naïve floozy to a woman who can take or leave anything she wants, all with great comic timing and truly impressive vocals.

Performances from the whole cast and orchestra were flawless, not a missed beat, not a strained note.

From the timing of opening cans of Bud Light to the choral numbers, the tightness of the production is a joy.

There are moments in the second act that hint at larger changes of style and the alterations to the climactic final scene are not as succinct as the rest of the show. The redefining of this tale brings irony to lines not initially intended for laughs, its analysis of the characters highlights the change of attitudes over a century on from when it was set and 80 years on from when it was written. The brilliance of the songs is celebrated in this imaginative telling and have you humming all the way home.

Burlesque and Brownies at the Mulan Rouge The scene for Mulan Rouge is set as you wait in Leakey’s Bar, with its Saturday Night Fever dance floor, and listen to disco favourites that first get your toes tapping, then your shoulders rocking, and before you know it you are up and giving it your best John Travolta moves, writes Michael Holland...

I was out with dancer and performance artist Rene Eyre, down in The Vaults beneath Waterloo Station that now doubled as the nether world of Paris for a ‘drag-tactic soirée’ combining Moulin Rouge and Disney’s Mulan - with a four-course dinner.

Rene is very knowledgeable about the whole drag scene, so became my guide for the evening. As we sat sipping cold beers, staff came round with appetisers: aubergine and coriander purée on a flat crouton. Hmmm, not bad. Then cocktails; we plumped for the Bourbon Old-Fashioned. Very nice.

A spotlight suddenly lit up the stage, a Lily Savage character bowled on and we were treated to an audience participation game show to warm us up. It was a good start.

We were advised to leave our genders at the door before being shepherded through a gaudily-lit red light district into a cavern with long tables set for dining, and a stage at each end. The show proper would begin as soon as our mushroom and celeriac paté had been devoured, and that didn’t take long.

Yes, Mulan Rouge is a parody of two well-known films and any fusion confusion doesn’t matter because as you try to make sense of the Disneyesque, finger-clicking Huns, goose-stepping about in their jackboots amongst the burlesque queens, there is a real good time to be had. The catchphrase seemed to be ‘Gender is a social construct’, which we all shouted in unison at the appropriate times.

The first act stopped for dinner - a very nicely spiced chicken dish - and gave us a chance to replenish our glasses. Act Two was more of the same mayhem at either end of the room, with much song and dance and someone getting New Direction mixed up with ‘nude erection’, and similar panto-like puns that led us into the dessert course - Chocolate, butterscotch and beetroot brownie - which sweetened us up for a flamboyant finale.

The crowd enjoyed the show from start to finish, as did we, although Rene did consider Mulan Rouge ‘drag-lite’, and promised to take me to see some hardcore drag next month!

I think I’ll stick to this very enjoyable dinner and dressing-up cabaret for now.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The works will be in operation for (2a) 19th – 20th May with back up dates of the 26th – 27th May. (2b) 24th – 25th May and 31st May – 1st June.

The effect of the two (Cycle Lanes) Orders would be to provide new mandatory with-flow cycle lanes, operational at any time and segregated in part, at some locations, from the adjoining motor vehicle traffic flow by way of a bolt-down kerb and having a width throughout of 1.5m, at the following locations:(a)in that part of SYDENHAM HILL which lies in the London Borough of Southwark, the west, north-west and north side, aligned with the western, north-western and northern kerb, a northbound, north-eastbound and eastbound cycle lane, extending in sections from a point 7m north of the common boundary of Nos. 15 and 15a Sydenham Hill to a point 8m south-west of the south-western kerb-line build-out of Crescent Wood Road (at its north-eastern junction with Sydenham Hill); (b) in that part of SYDENHAM HILL which lies in the London Borough of Lewisham, the south-east, south and east side, aligned with the south-eastern, southern and eastern kerb, a south-westbound, westbound and southbound cycle lane, extending in sections from a point 3.5m south-west of the south-western kerbline of the access road to Eddisbury House, Sydenham Hill to a point 5m north-west of the north-western kerb-line of Bluebell Close.

The effect of the two (Free Parking Places, Loading Places and Waiting, Loading and Stopping Restrictions) Orders would be:(a) in that part of SYDENHAM HILL which lies in the London Borough of Southwark: (i) to provide free unlimited stay parking places, on the north-west and north side of the carriageway located to the immediate south-east or south of the cycle lane referred to in item 2(a) preceding and longitudinally aligned with the segregating kerb, at the following locations: (A) extending from a point 20m north-east of the north-eastern kerb-line of Crescent Wood Road (at its south-western junction with Sydenham Hill north-eastward for a distance of 21m, and (B) extending from a point 8.5m east of the eastern kerb-line of the vehicular access to No. 41 Sydenham Hill eastward for a distance of 15.5m; and (ii) to introduce new or extend existing lengths of DYLs throughout the length of the cycle lanes referred to in item 2(a) preceding and on all other uncontrolled kerbside on the west, north-west and north side between a point 9m south-east of the common boundary of Nos. 15 and 15a Sydenham Hill and a point 14m north-east of the north-eastern kerb-line build-out of Crescent Wood Road (at its north-eastern junction with Sydenham Hill); (b) in that part of SYDENHAM HILL which lies in the London Borough of Lewisham: (i) to provide free unlimited stay parking places, on the south-east and south side of the carriageway located to the immediate north-west or north of the cycle lane referred to in item 2b) preceding and longitudinally aligned with the segregating kerb, at the following locations: (A) extending from a point 9m south-west of the south-western kerb-line of the vehicular access to ‘Cuddly Bear Day Care Nursery’, Sydenham Hill south-westward for a distance of 27m, and (B) extending from a point 12m west of the western kerb-line of Droitwich Close westward for a distance of 21m; and (ii) to introduce new or extend existing lengths of DYLs throughout the length of the cycle lanes referred to in item 2(b) preceding and on all other uncontrolled kerbside on the south-east, south and east side between a point 3.5m north-east of the north-eastern kerb-line of the vehicular access to Eddisbury House, Sydenham Hill and a point 5m north-west of the north-western kerb-line of Bluebell Close; (c) in CRESCENT WOOD ROAD in the London Borough of Southwark, to introduce new or extend existing lengths of DYLs on both sides of the road, (i) for a distance of 11m at its south-western junction with Sydenham Hill, and (ii) for a distance of up to 10m at its north-eastern junction with Sydenham Hill; and (d) in WELLS PARK ROAD in the London Borough of Lewisham, to introduce new or extend existing lengths of DYLs on both sides of the road, (i) for a distance of 14m on the north-east side at its junction with Sydenham Hill, and (ii) for a distance of 10m on the south-west side at its junction with Sydenham Hill.

4. The effect of the Lewisham (Charged-For Parking Places) Order would be to substitute map tiles in the map-based schedule attached to the Lewisham (Charged-For Parking Places) Order 2017 so as to reflect the changes referred to in items 3(b) and (d) above.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE that, pursuant to arrangements made with the Council of the London Borough of Lewisham, it proposes under section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the provision in SYDENHAM HILL of:(a) raised ‘zebra’ pedestrian crossings, the centres of which would be located:(i) at a point 6.5m south of the southern kerb-line of Dome Hill Park and the ‘controlled area’ would be laid on both sides of the carriageway for a distance of up to 13.5m either side of this crossing; (ii) at a point 9.5m south-west of the south-western kerb-line of Crouchmans Close and the ‘controlled area’ would be laid on both sides of the carriageway for a distance of up to 13.5m either side of this crossing; and (iii) at a point 9.5m south-west of the south-western kerb-line of Crescent Wood Road (at its north-western junction with Sydenham Hill) and the ‘controlled area’ would be laid on both sides of the carriageway for a distance of up to 13.5m either side of this crossing; and (b) a raised ‘zebra’ pedestrian crossing with parallel pedal cycle crossing facility, the centre of which would be located 8m south-west of the south-western kerb-line of Crescent Wood Road (at its southeastern junction with Sydenham Hill) and the ‘controlled area’ would be laid on both sides of the carriageway for a distance of up to 14m either side of these crossings.

By Mark Baldwin sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY’S FIVE-man pace attack blew Northamptonshire away for the second time in 24 hours at the Kia Oval, dismissing them for 202 to complete an emphatic LV= Insurance County Championship victory by an innings and five runs inside three days.

Dan Worrall picked up 3 for 37, Gus Atkinson 3 for 26 and Jordan Clark 2 for 43 as Surrey, who earlier in the day had finished off the Northamptonshire first innings for 194 with Colin de Grandhomme taking 4 for 39, strengthened their position at the top of Division One with a third win from five games.

This was a real show of power

by Surrey, who earned 22 points, despite the absence from this match of Ollie Pope with illness and the fact Sam Curran did not bowl in either Northamptonshire innings as he continues to manage his return from a stress fracture of the back. In addition, left-arm paceman Reece Topley was rested.

Worrall, though, hugely impressed on his home debut, after being signed last winter from Gloucestershire, and the 30-year-old Australian – now classed as a home player due to his British passport – claimed the vital scalp of Will Young soon after Northamptonshire had been asked to follow on.

Worrall produced an absolute beauty to have New Zealand Test opener caught behind for 3 in his fourth over with the new ball, leaving the visitors on 8 for 2 after Ricardo Vasconcelos had also edged to keeper Ben Foakes off Clark in the previous over.

Emilio Gay, to his enormous credit, then shrugged off a series of nasty blows to both his right and left elbows to hit a number of lovely strokes in a brave 51 and hold up Surrey’s seam battery for an hour and a half.

Gay twice needed on-field treatment to his right elbow in one Clark over just before lunch and soon after his arrival at the crease. Then, on 33, he was struck on his left elbow by a De Grandhomme delivery that spat up at him.

But the most painful blow came just after he had reached a 56-ball fifty with a pull off De Grandhomme, his ninth four. The next ball from the New

giving Foakes a fourth catch of the innings off Clark.Tom Taylor sparred De Grandhomme to second slip on 18, soon after tea, but Matt Kelly and Simon Kerrigan both enjoyed themselves in a ninth wicket stand of 50 before Worrall returned to have Kerrigan caught at cover for 25 and Atkinson saw Kelly swing high to deep midwicket on 33.

Northamptonshire’s first innings, meanwhile, had earlier lasted just another 10.4 overs after they began day three on 154 for 8, with Procter – who had resumed on 61 – remaining 83 not out from 196 balls and fully deserving of the crowd’s warm applause following a determined lone hand. One of Procter’s last defiant blows was a memorablystruck six off Overton that flew out of the ground over the short boundary and into the Harleyford Road.

De Grandhomme picked up the remaining two Northamptonshire first innings wickets, pinning Kerrigan

leg-before for 12 with a full-pitched swinging delivery and then forcing Ben Sanderson sky to mid on when the No11 miscued an attempted smear.

Surrey head coach Gareth Batty said: “We have been very good all round in this game, starting with totalling 401 after being put in on the first morning.

“The captain [Rory Burns] led from the front, as he always does, and his hundred was backed up by another good innings from Sam Curran and then that century stand for the ninth wicket between Jamie Overton and Gus Atkinson.

“With the ball, we are looking very good this season with lots of options out there and Dan Worrall was brilliant in his first home game here. He bowled well without any reward last week at Gloucestershire, on debut for us, and he’ll take plenty of wickets this season if he keeps bowling like he did in this match. He was fantastic.

by Angelo Jayasinghe, who now added 50 in eight overs for the sixth wicket with Sam Blackburn, who made 25 off 28 balls. Waqar and Gledhill each claimed a second wicket, before Jayasinghe fell to Harwood, having made 70 off 88 balls. The innings closed on 250-8 after 50 overs.

New skipper Chris Purshouse and Ollie Steele launched the Dulwich reply, but both fell within the first six overs to

make it 26-2. Khan then joined James Schofield and dominated the partnership as they kept up with the required rate, reaching 72-2 after 15 overs. But the scoring slowed as the spinners took control, with only 13 coming off the next five. The stand had reached 60 in the 21st over when Schofield fell in Jeremy Ives’ first over, for 20 off 56 balls. Khan followed in Ives’ next over for 43, having also faced 56 balls.

There were three more wickets for left arm spinner Ives, who finished with 5-25 off his ten overs, plus one for Charlie Edwards, saw Dulwich lose six wickets in 15 overs to decline from 86-2 to 129-8. Assan Crawford-Khan thus

“It’s a very long season, as I’ve said before, but we have started very well and we’ve also managed to give rests to a couple of our quicker bowlers, to try to keep them fresh, and we’ve dealt well with other players getting injured or not being available. I’m very pleased with where we are after five rounds.”

Northamptonshire head coach John Sadler added: “First division cricket is relentless and they bowled superbly throughout. But I still look back at having them 270-odd for eight and if we’d had a bit more fortune and bowled them out for 300 it could have been a different game.

“Emilio Gay showed some real courage under pressure today, and it was quite bizarre how he got hit on the same spot on his elbow three times. He was hurting out there but he also played some magnificent shots in his 51.”

Surrey are at Kent from May 12-15 for their next Division One match.

The Hamlet’s 2-1 home win over Hemel Hempstead secured tenth place in the

National League South, the highest league finish in the club’s modern history. Leading goal-scorer for the third consecutive season Danny Mills opened the scoring with his twelfth of the campaign, before left-back Andre Blackman doubled the lead with his second goal for the club.

Rose made one change from the previous weekend’s collapse away to Dorking Wanderers, with Jamie Splatt coming into midfield alongside Michael

Timlin.

Rose praised 21-year-old Splatt for his performance.

“I thought Jamie did really well with his opportunity today, and as a team we played some good football and got some good goals,” Rose told the News.

“Probably thought we could have got a penalty and a sending-off as well and could have killed the game, but that never happened and they got back into

at Champion Hill and the 3,384 in attendance saw the Hamlet start on the front foot. First Blackman, then Jordan Higgs raced in behind the opposition back-line but both over-hit their crosses with Mills stretching to reach them in the middle.

A lapse in concentration nearly cost the home side with the heavily involved Blackman not putting enough on his headed back-pass towards Charlie Grainger in the Hamlet goal. Josh Catiglione nipped in for the visitors but could only poke his effort straight at Grainger.

But on the 20-minute mark it was Dulwich who took the lead. A short freekick from Gio McGregor was initially dealt with, but the ball found its way back to McGregor on the corner of the box and his

delightful cross to the back post was met emphatically by Mills who powered his header back across goal and in.

Hemel Hempstead were dangerous from counter-attacks as first a clever reverse-pass from skipper Sam Mantom slipped in defensive midfielder Dominic Morgan-Griffiths but he could only curl his effort straight at Grainger.

Then, a clever dummy from Hempstead top scorer Charlee Hughes in the middle of the park opened up space for Mantom to roll in the busy Castiglione only for his attempt to deflect safely into the arms of Grainger.

The home keeper was in fine form again, and clearly his efforts in this campaign had not gone unnoticed among Hamlet supporters as the 25-year-old was voted the fans’ player of the season.

Remarkably, Giovanni McGregor was available for selection despite a red card for dissent away at Dorking last weekend.

Rose said: “To be honest we don’t know [why McGregor was not suspended], all we know is that he was available so we went with him.”

dulwich hamlet fc The Hamlet occupied themselves in the play-off positions for most of the season but plummeted down the table after their February defeat at Hampton & Richmond set in motion a run of eleven matches without a victory.

Saturday’s winning end to the campaign arrested the slide, but tenth and eight points off the top seven left Rose in a regretful, yet reflective mood.

He said: “I think you get what you deserve in football. Obviously we have quite a small squad with probably not enough depth, and that’s got the better of us. You get what you deserve.

“There’s times we should’ve won games and didn’t finish off chances, so we can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We had opportunities to win games and didn’t take them.

“It’s one of the best squads we’ve had in the Conference South, but it ain’t the best we’ve had in my time because we’ve had some very good squads in the past. I think if we had four or five players who could push us on we could go to another level.”

As well as having a small squad – which was pushed to the limit during the final quarter of the season by an injury crisis – Dulwich, since the turn of the year, have been forced into highly inconvenient late-evening sessions in unfamiliar surroundings over at Charlton Athletic’s training ground.

Discussions over the future of Rose, now thirteen years into his Dulwich tenure, will begin once he and the club have had a chance to their gather thoughts on the season.

“I think there’s no issue with me staying on, I think the only thing we’re talking about is improving our facilities and our changing rooms, they’re not of the level,” Rose explained. “We need a training ground and we’re trying to get one.

“We just need a little more tools to be able to do our jobs a little bit better. The club are trying their best to help us with that. “[The training ground situation] hasn’t been ideal, but we’re not ones to make excuses. Our conditions are our conditions and we get on with it.

“But obviously when you get an opportunity to start the season fresh we’d like to start it with less problems and things to help us, so that’s what we’re talking about.

“We’ve been planning for months in terms of next season.”

Hamlet end horrid run in sold-out last game

DULWICH HAMLET ended a barren streak of eleven games without a win as they saw off Hemel Hempstead 2-1 at Champion Hill on the last day of the season.

A goal from the Hamlet’s top-scorer this season Danny Mills put the home side ahead before they doubled their lead through Andre Blackman’s first of the campaign early in the second half.

However, Hemel Hempstead did rally after Craig Fasanmade halved the deficit on the hour-mark, but Dulwich survived a late scare to claim all three points for a tenth-place finish in National League South, the highest in their history.

It was the eighth sell-out of the season

Dulwich flew out the traps at the start of the second half. McGregor, who was excellent throughout, exploited the space in behind the away side’s defence once again. After some neat football in the middle of the park, McGregor threaded a ball through to Blackman and the leftback held off a couple of challenges before firing into the corner.

The home side looked fairly comfortable up until the 60th minute when they allowed their opponents back into the game. Hemel right-back Gus Scott-Morris whipped in a superb cross from nearer the halfway line than the Hamlet box, and the stooping Fasanmade flicked his header in at the near post.

Ibra Sekajja came off the bench for Hamlet to put the home side back on the front foot and he kept Hempstead keeper

Craig King on his toes with a couple of stinging efforts.

But it was another substitute, Alfie Cerulli, who nearly had the final say for the visitors. After looking sharp from his introduction, he finally got his chance in the final minute, rounding Grainger after a long ball fell kindly for him but an excellent tackle from Dulwich skipper Jack Holland denied him at the last.

Dulwich finished above Hampton & Richmond on goal difference, eight points off the play-off places.

The play-off battle has been fascinating to watch all season long, full of drama and surprises, but on the final day it was the two that started it in fifth and sixth that finished there.

There were no late twists. Sheffield United and Luton secured victories meaning that whatever Millwall did at the Vitality Stadium would have been in vain.

It was a game that the Lions had to win, so a strong start was imperative. George Saville, whose final quarter of the season has seen him return to near his best, delivered a superb free-kick, Jake Cooper headed the ball down looking for Benik Afobe but it didn’t reach the Lions’ topscorer.

AFC Bournemouth, of course, had already sealed automatic promotion with victory over Nottingham Forest in their previous fixture. Still, they were looking to end their season with a third straight win.

They responded with Republic of Ireland international Robbie Brady curling an effort over the bar as his side looked to get a foothold in the game.

The Cherries could have taken the lead in the eighteenth minute. Former Brentford attacker Emiliano Marcondes drifted in behind the Lions’ defence, after

they completely switched off, but Bartosz Bialkowski’s smart stop meant the game remained level.

Shaun Hutchinson had a great chance to put his side in front. A delicious ball from Saville found the Lions skipper unmarked at the back post, but he headed well over as the best chance of the game for the visitors came and went. This was the first season of Hutchinson’s Millwall career that he failed to find the net in any competition.

At half-time, with both Sheffield United and Luton winning, the play-off dream was drifting further away. The focus became just winning this game. The intent was there from Gary Rowett, as the Lions boss changed shape to a 4-3-3 formation at the interval.

There were appeals for a penalty in the 54th minute when Saville went down after being challenged by Nathaniel Phillips, but referee Andre Marriner was unmoved.

After that, the hosts turned up the pressure. Dominic Solanke was denied by a superb block from Hutchinson as the game became stretched, with both sides looking for an opener.

On 62 minutes, the hosts thought they had scored. Marcondes, who had been causing trouble for the Lions’ defence, had the ball in the net, but the offside flag was raised.

That seemed to spur on Scott Parker’s side, and they got stronger. Jordan Zemura

majestically beat not one but two Millwall defenders and fired a teasing ball across goal begging to be tapped home – only for it to go out off a Bournemouth man.

Saville tried his luck, forcing Mark Travers into a save, but it was a simple one for the Cherries stopper.

The deadlock was finally broken with nine minutes to go, as were Millwall’s play-off dreams. Kieffer Moore – who had scored the goal that secured Bournemouth Premier League football for next season – bore down one-on-one with Bialkowski before firing home high giving the goalkeeper little chance.

That was enough for Parker’s side to seal their 25th win of the season and ensured Millwall would be competing in the Championship for the sixth straight season.

That is a considerable achievement, considering the budget and stature of the club.

It’s been an excellent second half of the campaign for Rowett’s Lions after a frustrating start. They end the season with the third-best home record – only Fulham and Bournemouth did better on their own patches. Rowett also had to deal with 22 of his players picking up injuries or being out due to positive Covid-19 test results across the season. So all in all, taking the play-off battle to the last day was an outstanding effort.

There will be a rebuilding job to do this

summer with Alex Pearce and Connor Mahoney set to depart the club at the end of their contracts. Maikel Kieftenbeld is another out of contract, but the most significant loss could be Jed Wallace.

There were emotional scenes at fulltime as the players made their way over to the 1,300-plus travelling support.

A colossal ovation greeted Wallace as he applauded and blew kisses to the Lions faithful in what looked like a final goodbye. After 260 appearances, 43 goals and 50 assists, he has undoubtedly been the best player for the Lions over the last five years.

Replacing him will take a considerable effort. If he is to leave, Rowett will lose significant leadership in the dressing room as well as immense talent and attacking output.

The Lions boss has recruited well for the most part, but this summer will be a big challenge with the number of players that need to come in and with not a great deal of time between now and the start of preseason due to the Qatar World Cup taking place in November and so the 2022-23 campaign kicking off in late July.

It has been another season of progress, but the club faces its biggest summer since 2019, when Neil Harris overhauled the squad but didn’t see an improvement in results. Get the rebuilding right, and the Lions should once again be mixing it at the top end of the league table.

Millwall brought their fight for the play-offs to the final day but had given themselves too much to do as they lost to AFC Bournemouth. Victories for Luton Town and Sheffield United meant it wouldn’t have mattered had the Lions beaten Scott Parker’s promoted side.

“Obviously disappointing, it would have been nice to go out on a high, even winning and getting in the play-offs,” Mitchell said. “Having seen the Luton result you realise it wouldn’t have mattered had we won anyway.

“It is disappointing but if you look back at the season overall I think there are many things we can be pleased about.

The gaffer reeled off quite a few stats about how it’s been our best season under his management the last few years. That’s something to be proud of.

Bialkowski, 34, made it 138 consecutive Championship appearances for Millwall when he started in the 1-0 defeat to AFC Bournemouth on the last day of the 2021-22 season.

Bialkowski was Millwall’s official player of the year in 2019-20 and 2020-21 and was third behind Murray Wallace and Danny McNamara in this campaign’s top three.

Former Poland international Bialkowski kept fourteen clean sheets

in the league this season.

After coming on for the injured Frank Fielding in the 43rd minute of the opening game of the season against Preston North End in 2019-20, Bialkowski hasn’t missed a second of Championship action.

Speaking before naming Bialkowski in his starting XI for the final-day clash against the Cherries - meaning he has started every one of the manager’s 125 league games in charge - Rowett said: “It’s testament to his professionalism and the way he prepares for games. I’ve said it many times before, to perform to such a level that he denies someone as good as George Long from playing minutes shows Bart is at a really good level.

Mitchell played 45 games in all competitions this season, including 31 consecutive starts, after a serious hamstring injury in the summer of 2020 wrecked what could have been his breakthrough campaign.

“I was absolutely knackered first half and I couldn’t quite get into the game as much as I wanted second half,” Mitchell said. “But we gave it as good a go as we could. We left it all out there so no regrets.

“In terms of the season as a whole I’ve

been really, really pleased. If you’d told me I’d start as many games as I have this year I probably wouldn’t have believed you, given how last season went with injuries and stuff like that.

“Really grateful to the management staff, they told me at the beginning of the season I was going to play and they were true to their word. Hopefully I’ve repaid them with my performances throughout the season.

“I’ve been really, really pleased and I’ve just got to kick on in the off-season and get ready for next year.”

Tanto on target but heartbreak for Sutton

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ISAAC OLAOFE scored his ninth goal of the season but Sutton United missed out on the playoffs on a drama-packed final day at the top of League Two.

Sutton had to win at Harrogate and hope one of Mansfield, Port Vale or Swindon didn’t get the results they needed.

Port Vale and Swindon won and Sutton’s biggest hope was then Mansfield, but they held on for a 2-2 draw at home to Forest Green Rovers, who won the title on goal difference over Exeter City.

Former Millwall midfielder Craig Eastmond put the U’s ahead in the eighth minute and Olaofe added the second 12 minutes from time.

Forest Green equalised in the 80th minute against Mansfield but unfortunately for Sutton they couldn’t find a winner. Sutton would have reached the top seven on goal difference if Mansfield had lost.

In their debut season in the Football League, Sutton finished a point off the play-offs, just four off the automatic spots – the last of which Bristol Rovers claimed on goals scored after their stunning 7-0 win at home to Scunthorpe – and only eight points off top spot.

Olaofe, 22, made 34 appearances this season.

Also in League Two, Alex Mitchell came on in the 66th minute of Leyton Orient’s 1-0 defeat at home to Tranmere Rovers.

Mitchell, 20, played 31 times this season as Orient finished thirteenth.

“I think I’ve found that consistency is key,” Mitchell said. “It’s a long, long season. You hear all these phrases and you don’t really know what they mean until you play games back to back to back.

“I have learned a lot. I’ve learned what it takes to be a top Championship player and what things I need to do to get better, what I need to add to my game and work on over the summer. I’ll go away and do my best to try to come back a better player.

“I don’t think there is any better motivation than coming up just shy. So, I’m sure the boys will have a complete rest for a couple of weeks. Bloomy [head of performance, Laurence Bloom] will send out our programmes and I’m sure we’ll get fit to get fit.

“The boys will come back raring to go.

So bring on next year.”

Millwall finished the season with the third-best home record, behind only promoted Fulham and Bournemouth.

It was the first full season in three that stadiums were at full capacity after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mitchell added: “The Den has been our fortress, I know we’ve got a really, really good home record in comparison to the rest of the teams in the league. That’s something that Millwall prides itself on and no doubt it will be the same again next year.

“That’s definitely due to the return of fans. It was horrible playing without them and they’ve played an important role in where we’ve managed to get to.

“They’re absolutely tops. We gave our all and came up short [Saturday] and they’re still singing at the end, ‘we love you Millwall’.

“It means a lot as a player and especially as a player who’s a fan as well to see them come in their numbers.

They’ve been fantastic all season and we couldn’t ask for any more.”

No major overhaul as youngsters could step up EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT has dropped his first hints about transfer plans this summer – and said he didn’t expect a big overhaul of the squad.

Apart from Jed Wallace, all of Millwall’s key senior players are secured on long-term contracts.

The goalkeeping and defensive areas of the squad are well-stocked, with the main focus set to be on improving the attack.

Rowett was asked if the number of new signings could be seven to ten, based on five loan players returning

to their clubs, Alex Pearce and Connor Mahoney leaving, and questions over the futures of others.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say seven to ten,” Rowett responded. “We’ve got the likes of Alex Mitchell and Isaac Olaofe coming back to us for pre-season after positive seasons out on loan.

“We’ve seen the impact that other young players like Tyler [Burey] and Zak [Lovelace] have made. They will have more opportunities next season.”

Two players Millwall could aim to bring back on permanent deals are Benik Afobe from Stoke City and Oliver Burke from Sheffield United.

Both players are unlikely to have futures with their parent clubs, though they are still under contract and should have interest from elsewhere.

“They’ve done well for us,” Rowett said. “Anyone who’s had a positive season for us and a positive impact you’d consider trying to get them back.

But there’s a lot of things that could happen with those two players and we’re not going to be in control of that.

“All we can do is have those discussions behind the scenes and see what happens, I think is the easiest way to say it.”

Rowett has previously told the News he would be interested in another deal for Daniel Ballard, but he accepted that could be difficult as Arsenal weigh up the next move for their defender.

Ojo played just nineteen times all season, while Freeman was limited to one substitute appearance after his January move.

“I wish him all the best, I don’t think it’s something that we’ll be able to pursue,” Rowett said about Ojo. “Luke had a very frustrating time.

He’s a top player but obviously he’s not been able to show that.

“But again, probably unlikely we’re going to be able to pursue that, although Luke could be out of contract this summer.

“At the moment, our focus is on players who played last season and had good, positive seasons.

“That’s where we’re looking at this moment in time.”

Boss not ruling out Jed stay EXCLUSIVE

Wallace, 28, is out of contract at the end of June and potentially played his last match for the Lions against AFC Bournemouth last Saturday.

Wallace was offered a new contract last summer and was the subject of bids from Nottingham Forest in January.

Former Portsmouth and Wolves attacker Wallace appeared to say goodbye to The Den in his previous game, and also posed for photos with Millwall’s media team.

At the Vitality Stadium on the last day, Wallace looked emotional and was one of the last players to depart the pitch after applauding and blowing kisses to the Millwall fans.

Asked if the club would now move on from Wallace and focus on his replacement, Rowett said: “Not necessarily.

“Of course Jed has to do the right thing for him and his family, and he’s earned the right to make that decision. He has the time to be able to do that now.

“It was really nice for Jed to be able to get back for the last few games of the season and again he showed what an important player he is for us.

“But we have to plan for being without him. He has been such a good player for us and if he does move on then the challenge is to bring someone else in.”
