By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark News readers took to Twitter last week to vote on whether they agreed with Priti Patel’s Rwanda immigration scheme.

With the votes now in, the News can reveal that 72.5% of people said they disagreed with the idea of sending unauthorised migrants to Rwanda.

27.5% of voters said they agreed. That means, of the 149 people who voted, 108 people were against the scheme, with the remaining 41 in favour.

The controversial deal, signed by Home Secretary Priti Patel on Thursday 14 April, would see Rwanda take on responsibility for migrants entering the UK via illegal routes.

Last week, the News went to Dulwich Village to ask local residents what they thought of the scheme.

Dulwich Village resident Damien Hackett said: “If people are coming here illegally, then I think it’s not an unreasonable way of stopping the problem which is people assuming they can come to the UK.” But Nigel Blakelock, also of Dulwich Village, said: “I think it’s a really bad idea. The Home Secretary is, I think, a rather unfeeling person to put it mildly. They are going somewhere where god knows what’ll happen to them. I’m glad I’m not one of them.”

This evidence of Southwark’s hard graft is even more impressive considering the borough’s high student population.

Full-time students are less likely to be employed and Southwark is home to those studying at King’s College London, Goldsmiths, LSBU and others.

This is reflected in the statistics which show that 41.4% of those who were economically inactive said they were students.

Andrew Griffiths, the PM’s policy chief in Number 10, said the policy could be “implemented and operationalised in weeks or a small number of months”.

However, Patel has had to issue a ministerial direction to overrule civil servants concerned the scheme won’t deliver value for money.

The UK government has already paid Rwanda £120 million as part of the deal. It has been reported that it would cost between £20,000 and £30,000 for each migrant to be sent to Rwanda.

The UK could also face legal challenges after the United Nations Refugee Agency expressed strong opposition to the plans.

There are also fears that those sent to Rwanda could be subject to poor conditions in a country ruled by President Paul Kagame, who has a chequered human rights record.

Southwark's jobless are more likely to be looking for work than unemployed people around the country, according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) data.

29% of Southwark’s out-of-work residents said they wanted a job in 2021. Across London, only 20.6% of unemployed people wanted work and this dropped to 18.6% nationally.

However, the average Southwark resident did earn less money than those living in other boroughs in 2021, earning £724.10 per week compared to £728.40 London average.

According to the ONS’ subnational indicators, the borough also scored poorly for ‘life satisfaction’ and ‘anxiety’.

The borough with the highest level of employment was the City of London, followed by Hackney. Kensington and Chelsea scored the lowest, with just 63.5% employed in 2021.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Millwall defender Danny McNamara has tracked down the young Lions’ fan who gave him £20 of his birthday money along with a note asking him to donate it to a charity of his choice.

The boy, who signed the letter 'Benji Savage', handed McNamara the letter, containing £20 cash, after a recent game, with a note that asked him to donate the money to a charity of his choice.

The note read: "Dear Danny, Because you are my favourite player I would like to give you £20 of my birthday money for you to give to charity."

Touched by the young lad's selfless gesture, McNamara tweeted: "My chosen charity is Cancer Research due to this illness currently impacting my family at this time, also in memory of a Ted Ayres who sadly passed away this week at the young age of 59.

"Ted was a devoted Millwall fan - my thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.

McNamara not only donated the £20 but matched it with his own £20 contribution. He added: "If anyone knows this little lad message me. I want to thank him personally."

Thankfully, McNamara's Twitter appeal bore fruit, with him later tweeting: "Found him! Thank you everyone!" This heart-warming exchange has drawn huge attention with Mcnamara's tweets garnering over 2,400 likes and over 300 retweets.

Ruskin Park Paddling Pool will make a splash next month when it reopens to the public, complete with improved circulation, a new surface and upgraded equipment.

After being closed during successive Covid-19 lockdowns, the pool reopened in July 2021, only to close again in September due to ageing equipment.

Thanks to the fundraising of local charities such as Herne Hill Forum and the Herne Hill Society, as well as donations from local businesses, the pool will reopen on the late May bank holiday.

Suzanne Vincent, founder of Urban Village, which has helped to reopen the pool, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that the pool is opening once again.

“It’s been a beloved feature of Ruskin Park for so long, nobody could bear to see it close. Of course, its long history also meant a number of age-related problems were inevitable.

“I’m so proud of the work of my fellow volunteers at Lambeth Landscapes and Friends

of Ruskin Park in ensuring the paddling pool can re-open sustainably.

“Thanks also to Lambeth Council for their part in funding the works. I’m delighted that we can maintain the pool for this and future generations.”

Those who arrive on opening day will be dazzled by a new pool surface with repaired expansion joints and anti-slip paint.

Contractors have also installed an aboveground plant room featuring new pumps, filtration and automatic chlorine dosing.

The number of water jets has even increased from two to ten, improving circulation and making it easier to clean.

And whereas previously the pool shared its water connection with the cafe and toilets, it now has its own Thames Water connection, making it quicker to fill.

While the pool’s funding target has been met, additional contributions are more than welcome and vital for ongoing maintenance and support. People can donate at www.gofundme. com.

Horror on bermondsey estate Four murder victims are named as community is left in shock

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A quiet Bermondsey estate was rocked by the “truly horrific” news that four family members had been stabbed to death in the early hours of Monday morning.

Denton Burke, 58, and his partner Dolet Hill, 64, who lived together on Delaford Road, were stabbed at home along with Tanysha (aka Rachquel) Ofori-Akuffo, 45, Ms Hill’s daughter, from the Brandon Estate, and Samantha Drummonds, 27, who lived in Forest Hill.

A 28-year-old man, from Lewisham, was arrested at the scene of the crime on suspicion of murder after being tasered by police, who arrived at about 1am. He was treated in a London hospital and has been discharged into police custody.

Ms Hill’s niece told reporters on Monday that her aunt, a former housekeeper at Guy’s Hospital, was “very loving, very kind, very generous.”

Venecia Reid added: “She worked very hard in this country to support her two girls and her two grandkids. She did not deserve this.”

Residents of the Bonamy Estate said on Monday morning that they were “shocked” by the killings, with screams reportedly heard in the middle of the night.

Kyriacos Pieri, who is the chair of the tenants’ and residents’ association, said that the group sent their condolences to the family of the victims.

He told the News: “Of course we are saddened by what happened, it’s terrible what’s happening here and across London.”

Another resident, who said she had lived on the estate all her life, said that the killings were “shocking.”

“But that’s London, isn’t it?”, she added.

Alastair Gourlay, director of estates and facilities at Guy’s, where Ms Hill worked, said: “We are devastated to hear about the tragic death of Dolet Hill, who worked as a housekeeping assistant in our pharmacy department for more than 21 years, before her retirement in 2018.

“Dolet was a well-respected colleague, who also helped to improve the workplace for others as an active UNISON representative. Our thoughts are with Dolet’s family, friends and all who worked with her.”

Special post-mortem examinations have been arranged for Tuesday, April 26 and Wednesday, April 27, after which the victimes will be formally identified.

Detective Chief Inspector Linda Bradley, who leads the investigation, said: “This was a truly horrific incident and I fully recognise that the distress for the family and the community will be overwhelming.

“We are conducting a thorough and detailed investigation into the facts and we are appealing to anyone who can assist

Forensic officers have set up several tents on the street, which is blocked off except to residents.

Chief superintendent Colin Wingrove, in charge of policing for the borough, said: “I want to offer my heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of all those concerned.

“This is a terrible incident and I fully understand how worried the community will be. We are working closely with our partners and local community groups to keep everyone informed and answer their questions.

“Extra officers will be in the area to offer reassurance - please speak to them, they are there to listen to you and act on your concerns.

Local MP Harriet Harman and local councillors on the estate after the killings “Homicide detectives have launched a wide-ranging and relentless investigation into these terrible events, please assist them by avoiding unhelpful speculation and allow them time to uncover the evidence.

“Such terrible events are rare, but I know that will not diminish the shock that will be felt across London and the wider country. I assure you, this investigation will leave no stone unturned in discovering the facts.”

Local politicians shared their horror at the news of the killings on Monday.

Southwark Council leader Kieron Williams said: “I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the deaths of four people at an address in our borough. Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the victims and we offer our condolences to friends, family and neighbours at this time.

“We are assisting the police with their investigation to find out what happened and our teams are out in the community today to support and comfort residents.

I urge anyone who has information that may help the investigation to contact the police.”

London mayor Sadiq Khan said he was “heartbroken” by the attacks.

“My thoughts are with the family and friends of those who have lost loved ones in this awful crime,” he added.

MP for the area Harriet Harman said: “Tragically four people have been killed and that is shocking to happen anywhere but especially in this very peaceful, quiet, very settled community here.

“The police have arrested someone, but it’s really important still that people give information, any information they’ve got to the police so that whoever committed this horrific crime can be brought to justice.”

Jimi - ‘Your legacy lives on angel’

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Family, friends and local community leaders commemorated the one-year anniversary of Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole dying after jumping into the Thames to save a woman, at a church service on Sunday.

The Southwark Cathedral service was followed by a ceremony to lay flowers in the memory of Bermondsey man Jimi, who tragically died aged just 20 after bravely plunging into the river from London Bridge.

Jimi, 20, was on his way back from his job as a waiter in west London when

he heard the woman was in trouble.

With little regard for his own safety the Neckinger Estate resident jumped into the Thames to help save her. She was rescued but he drowned.

Jimi's uncle Olumide said: "We will always remember you beautiful soul.

"We know you know we did everything you would have wanted for your name and family.

"Your legacy lives on Angel."

Bermondsey MP Neil Coyle, who was at the service, said: "Too often young people are demonised in our media, but one year ago a young man on his way home lost his life after bravely trying to save a woman in the Thames.

"We remembered Jimi’s heroism this

morning - thank you".

Jimi - also known as J-Stizz 167 - was an aspiring rapper who wrote about his life growing up in south London, and one of his songs was played on Radio 1 Xtra over the weekend to mark a year since his death. The track was edited by two close friends of Jimi in the year since his death.

Charlotte Simpson, BBC Newsbeat journalist, said: “Jimi’s friends have dedicated themselves to making sure his legacy lives on for years to come, and have used his music as a way to process the tragedy.

“To channel their energy into something so positive is so heart-warming and makes for a beautiful tribute one year on from his death.”

60-year-old Millwall fan brutally atacked

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A 60-year-old Millwall fan was rushed to hospital "seriously injured" after being brutally assaulted outside the Birmingham City stadium last Saturday, April 23.

The man had just arrived with his family outside St Andrew’s stadium ahead of Millwall's 3pm away game when he was attacked on Cattell Road.

A 30-year-old man from Smethwick, near Birmingham, was arrested soon after the attack and is being held on suspicion of wounding.

West Midlands Police said that the high number of officers already at the game meant the man was well looked after in the immediate aftermath of the attack, before being taken to hospital.

A Millwall spokesperson said: "The club is assisting the police and other authorities with their investigation into disorder involving both sets of supporters following the conclusion of Saturday's game. Any individual found guilty of such offences will receive an indefinite ban from home and away matches."

It came amid an afternoon of violence related to the match, with fans fighting across the city. Police arrested five people and warned of more arrests to come as they look into CCTV footage.

People chucked bricks, bottles and other objects around and used them as weapons. Some 150 seats were torn up out of the stadium.

Police used helmets, riot shields and batons to keep control of the crowds, and were supported by dog teams and drone units.

Chief superintendent Ian Parnell said: “The violent behaviour was unacceptable and we will do everything we can to find those responsible so that they can be punished appropriately by the courts.

“We always push for the maximum punishment and we are supported by the clubs in this. Most fans just want to enjoy the game but a minority have ruined today for the majority.

Birmingham said: “The Club are aware of a number of incidents of supporter disorder, before, during and after Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship fixture with Millwall.

We are working with the authorities to help identify the perpetrators who, if found guilty, will be subject to the scrutiny of the law.

“The Club will also be conducting an internal investigation in line with our disciplinary policy. There is no place for the kind of behaviour witnessed on Saturday and those involved will be no longer welcome at St. Andrew’s.”

Pricebusters priced out as negotiations run past deadline

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk The dispute between developers and an Elephant and Castle household goods store has rumbled past the deadline, with the two parties at loggerheads over rent costs.

Last week, the News reported that Pricebusters had until Friday 22 April to accept or reject developers’ offer of £392,000 and a new retail unit, or risk getting nothing.

But at the eleventh hour, it emerged the two parties disagreed on the cost of renting the new unit. The deadline has passed, but negotiations continue.

Unable to disclose the exact figures, Rakesh said: “They’ve offered ‘x amount’ and what we want is ‘y’.

“They’re building loads of flats and god knows how much money they’ll make.

This money is a drop in the ocean for them while this is our livelihoods.”

Relocated traders are supposed to get a 40 per cent discount off market rent, but Lendlease and Pricebusters now disagree over how much ‘market rent’ is.

The sudden emergence of market rent as a key factor, when the focus had been on relocation costs, demonstrates how fraught and complex negotiations are.

Even if this market rent dispute is now solved, Rakesh will still expect the extra £230,000 he is demanding from the developers.

The squabble harks back to the Elephant and Castle shopping centre demolition, where the council allowed developers to displace shops if they covered owners’ relocations costs.

In a deal signed by the council, developers had to allocate just £634,700 to pay for the relocation costs of approximately 70 traders.

Developers Delancey and Lendlease later agreed to provide an additional ‘discretionary’ amount if traders needed it - but the council did not insist on a

specific amount.

In theory, the new financial care package could be as little as £10. Rakesh says the deal “wasn’t the smartest thing”.

A spokesperson for Lendlease said: "We've been working hard for some time with Mr Patel to secure Pricebusters' future within Elephant Park and have made him several offers to do so of which our latest includes a heavily discounted rent, as well as a substantial contribution towards the fitout of the unit. Both those elements are at much more generous rates than required by planning regulations, but they reflect our appreciation of Pricebusters' value to our local community.

"Over twenty retailers have now opened their doors within the Elephant Park development, and ten of these are local businesses taking advantage of discounted affordable rents. We're eager that Pricebusters becomes the eleventh of these businesses so they can maintain their presence in Elephant and Castle."

Ukraine couple's dreams of escape wrecked by visa delays Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A young Ukrainian couple’s dreams of escaping to the UK have finally been shattered because their visas took too long to arrive.

The News reported last month that Kamil Salmanov and his partner Natalia Lepekha had been invited by Fiona Taylor to stay at her house on the Pepys Estate, in Deptford bordering Rotherhithe. But five weeks after applying through the Ukrainian resettlement scheme, the hopeful couple still haven’t received their visa, remaining stranded in Ukraine.

Fiona had hoped the couple might still eventually come to the UK. But the News has now learned the couple ran out of money and have been forced to claim asylum in Poland. Fiona said: “Isn’t it disgusting, you get out of a war-torn city, you are in a refugee camp, people here are pulling together to make safe space, and the only problem holding you back is some poxy administration issue.”

She added: “I feel like people in this community tried to help them come here

- everything was put in place. They had a sanctuary for them here.”

Determined to tackle the “powerlessness” she’s felt at watching the war unfold on television, she has already offered her home to 22-year-old Masha from Mykolaiv, Ukraine.

Masha, a psychology student from Kyiv, received her visa last Wednesday week, 20 April and will soon book her flight to the UK. Fiona said: “It’s fantastic. I’m so relieved for her and it will be good to meet her.”

“I’m lucky to have a neighbours friends and family who are so invested in this, in making somebody’s life a bit more bearable - that gives me heart.”

Peckham woman offering free English lessons to Ukrainian refugees

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A Ukrainian woman living in Peckham is offering free English lessons to her compatriots who have fled to the UK, to help them settle into their new lives.

Alisa Masokha-Jones, 33, originally from Kiev, has been teaching Lara, in her 50s, from Kiev, and will soon welcome two new students on board.

She said: “I don’t have enough space to take refugees in my own home and this was the next best thing I could do given my experience.

Alisa has a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), a highly-respected language teaching qualification and has taught in Mexico and South Korea.

Of her new student, she said: “Lara is

a fast learner, is very enthusiastic and has very good pronunciation. But she’s also very emotional and keeps stopping - telling me about the things she saw and heard.”

Her two new students, who only arrived in the UK last Thursday 21 April, lived in Kiev but are originally from Donetsk and Crimea.

Alisa is offering the lessons every day alongside her work in admin for a financial company, squeezing teaching in during lunchtimes and after work.

She was inspired to help by the deep emotional impact the war has had on her and her family.

With her mum, she has already sponsored friends and families arriving from Ukraine but sadly, her grandmother remains in Kiev.

Alisa said: “I can’t get my grandmother out so I’m just hoping for the best.

“I managed to get most of my friends out but my grandmother can’t move physically or emotionally - so I’m just hoping the Russians don’t come back to Kiev.”

She was initially surprised by the little response her advert for free language lessons garnered when she posted it on the community website, Next Door.

She believes this is partly because there simply aren’t enough Ukrainians in the country yet. She explained: “As we all know, the home office has been super ineffective when it comes to visa applications.”

As more Ukrainians arrive, she hopes to expand her classes. Currently teaching from her home, she expects she’ll have to find new premises eventually.

Masha is forced to leave her parents, grandparents and younger sister behind in Mykolaiv, which is currently subject to heavy shelling.

Mykolaiv is believed to be an important target for Moscow as it looks to invade the key strategic port city of Odessa.

Despite lodging her application just over a week ago, Masha has already received her visa. Kamil and Natalia applied over

five weeks ago but never received theirs.

Home Secretary Priti Patel has apologised for the “frustrating” visa delays which have seen would-be sponsors condemn the bureaucracy of the Homes For Ukraine scheme.

£20,000 reward offered for information on the unsolved Peckham murder of Ola Raji

The 20-year-old had been cycling on the East Surrey Grove Estate in Peckham when he was attacked by two men.

He was shot and stabbed as he lay on the ground.

Three people have been arrested as part of the police investigation but all have been released, with no one brought to justice for Ola’s murder.

Ruki Ware, Ola Raji’s sister said: “Ola was a fun, humorous, and caring young man. He was and still is a muchloved grandson, son, baby brother and uncle who loved life. He had his whole life ahead of him and so much to live for.

"Our lives have been turned upside down since the day he was attacked and will sadly never be the same. We miss him more and more with every day that passes.

the Southwark drug dealer who ran his criminal enterprise from prison gets a further 25 years inside

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A jailed drug dealer who ran a cocaine trafficking operation from behind bars has been jailed for a further 25 years.

Forty-two-year-old Darryl Tawiah was already serving an eighteen-year sentence for drugs supply and firearms offences when he was arrested and charged by the National Crime Agency (NCA) last year.

Taiwah was sentenced last Wednesday week, 20 April, alongside associates, who helped him fix deals on the outside and launder the profits.

Working with people within the UK and the Netherlands, Tawiah’s organised crime group is believed to have been behind at least two tonnes of Class A drugs imported into the UK and then sold across London and the South East.

Co-conspirators, Dorian Vaciulis, Steven Johnson and Faisal Guled were all sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court.

Jason Hulme, operations manager at the NCA, said: “This three-year investigation took apart an established criminal enterprise which had imported tonnes of cocaine to the UK, where its trade fuels addiction, violence and exploitation.

“Tawiah operated a network outside that did his dirty work for him, with all taking a slice of the profits.

“Thanks to the diligence of our officers and partners, the Dutch police and Criminal Assets Bureau in Dublin, we secured today’s convictions and hope any would-be drug traffickers are reminded of our continued pursuit of serious and organised criminals.”

In one conversation the Dutch supplier told Tawiah: “I want you to move 50 [kilos] a week, don’t talk to me about one”.

Taiwah responded: “No problem Bro…

now that it is good, everybody is calling… ..I need to get more money in…”

Other conversations revealed that Tawiah hoped to sell ‘coffee’ when he left prison, which is slang for heroin.

He also asked the supplier if he had ever heard of “2C” because “everybody

'Gun runner' jailed for seven years

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A 'gun runner', whom police discovered ordered a pistol to an address in Elephant and Castle, has been jailed for seven years.

The court heard that Givaunni Macdonna, 28, ordered the self-loading 9mm, Brazilian Taurus Arms pistol and 352g of cannabis from Florida, US. Police caught him by intercepting the package and replacing the contents with a listening device, painstakingly repackaging the parcel to avoid alerting suspicion.

After collecting the parcel from Elephant and Castle, he opened it back at his Greenwich home, only to find the contents missing.

Ten minutes later, at 6.21pm he threw the package in undergrowth at Winns Common and was arrested by Organised Crime Partnership (OCP) officers.

Macdonna was convicted by a jury at Woolwich Crown Court of importation of a firearm, attempted possession of a firearm, attempted possession of ammunition and importation of drugs and was jailed last Friday, April 23 .

Andy Tickner, of the OCP said: “The OCP’s core mission is to protect the public and protect London from organised crime groups and offenders

2C, otherwise know as liquid GHB, is a drug which can cause loss of consciousness and is sometimes used in cases of ‘date rape’.

The court heard how Taiwah managed a network of people on the outside. Steven Johnson, 37 of Farlington Place, London is said to have collected and distributed drug deliveries.

Faisal Guled, 34, a Dutch national living in Camden, is said to have run a county lines operation which saw drugs sold across London and Northampton.

Rosemond Agyemang, 59, is then said to have laundered cash through bank accounts and pay the Dutch supplier’s people in the UK. When she was arrested outside Oval station in July 2019, she had thousands of pounds in cash on her.

Dorian Vaciulius, 34, from Feltham, London, is said to have worked for the Dutch supplier and would collect both cash and drugs.

Ali Reza Shokrolahi, 41, from London, is said to have been the gang’s lorry driver and was linked to a 30kg cocaine shipment that was seized at the UK border.

Tawiah, Vaciulis, Johnson, Agyemang and other alleged co-conspirators were arrested in March last year and charged with numerous offences relating to class A drugs and money laundering.

At Wood Green Crown Court, Tawiah, Johnson, Vaciulis and Guled were sentenced to a collective 70 years in prison after pleading guilty.

Agyemang was given a one year sentence at the same court last year, while Shokrolahi absconded while on bail and was absent from the hearing.

Jason Hulme said: “One of the men sentenced today remains wanted.

A pair of armed thugs reportedly tried to steal a man's motorbike, with videos posted online showing onlookers aghast.

A video shows the pillion-riding pair circling the alleged victim, who runs away clutching a knife, which had reportedly been dropped by the two men on the moped.

Members of the public then appear to help the alleged victim retrieve his motorbike, which lay in the road.

Police were called to London Road, Elephant and Castle, shortly after 6pm on Saturday, April 23, responding to reports of an altercation.

By the time officers had arrived, those involved had fled on mopeds.

A machete was recovered.

There were no reports of any injuries and enquiries are ongoing.

Man jailed for life after stabbing 'quiet, humble' teen to death in front of his family

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A teenager has been handed a life sentence, with a minimum of having to serve 22 years in jail, for murdering another teenager in front of his family in Sydenham.

Romello Harley, 19, of Kirkdale, Sydenham was jailed after killing Tashawn Watt, also 19, at his family home on Miall Walk, SE26, in the evening of June 25 last year. He was convicted of murder and possession of a deadly weapon on March 21.

Tashawn, who wanted to be a banker, died at the scene after Harley stabbed him in the chest. Speaking at the trial, his mother described 'Tata' as a "calm, kind" character who would never willingly get into a fight.

She went on: “I can see that day so vividly and I relive it everyday. My house does not feel the same, it’s missing Tata. I wake up every day and expect to hear the boys talking, the house is now so quiet now that Tata has gone. I sometimes talk to Tata to feel closer to him.

“My last memory of Tata was him dying on the floor in front of me. I decided to go and see Tata in the chapel to try to get rid of this image from my head. Tata looked sad like it wasn’t his time to go, it didn’t seem right he was taken so soon from us.

“Tata is missing from every family photo.

Every birthday, every Christmas Day, every family occasion Tata is missing.

“There’s not a minute or hour in the day where Tata doesn’t come into my head. I sometimes ask how I can go on. The fact this was done by someone who was so close to Tata and our family is hard for me to come to terms with. We showed

Tashawn’s brother added: “Tata is my brother and one of my best friends. Tata was kind, quiet, and humble. He was popular with our friends, nobody ever had a bad word to say about him.

“Seeing Tata die in front of me was so hard. I don’t know if I would ever be able to put into words how difficult this was for me. I felt so helpless. I wish I could rewind and go back to that day and change what happened.

“Going to court and speaking about what happened was hard but I knew I had to do it as I wanted to get justice for Tata. The trial was very difficult, as I felt like I was seeing Tata die in front of me again.

“I go to Tata’s grave every day so I can feel close to him and it’s hard for me to move on. It upsets me that Tata will never be there at any birthday party, he will never be an uncle to my children or see me if I ever

Police worked out that Harley had got into an argument with a relative of Tashawn's at the Watts’ family home a short time before the incident. He was asked to leave.

He went to get a knife and came back to the area where he tried to lure Tashawn to an alleyway. Tashawn refused to go with him. Harley then stabbed Tashawn in front of his family.

After the attack, Harley dropped the knife and ran away from the scene. As well as there being several witnesses to the incident, the attack was also caught on CCTV. Harley went into hiding and officers began an urgent manhunt to find him. On June 28, he handed himself in at Lewisham Police Station and was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Running for Evelina after daughter is saved

A mother and father from south-east London are raising money for Evelina London children's hospital after staff saved their daughter's life.

Baby Florence Fox was diagnosed aged just nine weeks with Mixed Mitral Valve Disease at Evelina London, a very rare condition where the heart’s mitral valve doesn’t work properly, which restricts the flow of blood and puts a strain on the heart.

She had life-saving open heart surgery at Evelina London, near Waterloo, when she was thirteen weeks old to replace her mitral valve.

She is the smallest patient to undergo the procedure at the hospital.

Mother Jenny, 33, said: " When Florence was born she made a strange squeaky noise whenever she breathed. At first I thought it was cute but as time went on it began to concern me.

She wasn’t feeding properly so initially the GP thought it was reflux. When Florence was four weeks old she got Covid and was admitted to our local hospital. One of the doctors who checked her noticed that she had a heart murmur but he

didn’t think it was anything serious and I was given a follow up outpatient appointment.

"I was in shock and worried about how I was going to cope as my other daughter was due to start school soon. But after all we had gone through we were relieved that we finally had an answer to all our questions.

“The doctors explained that the reason she wasn’t feeding properly was due to a build-up of fluid on her lungs which made feeding hard work and she was exhausted. They said she had chosen to breathe over feeding because she couldn’t do both.

"She needed to have surgery to replace her mitral valve but the doctors were concerned she was too small and they wanted to wait until she put weight on. She struggled to gain weight so in the end they went ahead with the surgery while she was still very small.”

Florence underwent the six hour operation in September 2021. She spent eight days at Evelina London before being discharged back home to finish recovering.

Jenny said: “It was really horrible waiting

£64,650 given to cancer sufferers in southwark Nearly 180 people living with cancer in Southwark got tens of thousands of pounds in grants from a cancer charity to help with rising costs of living.

Macmillan Cancer Support gave £64,650 last year to people facing the 'triple threat' - financial difficulties because of being ill, Covid-19 hitting jobs and the economy, and the skyrocketing costs of living.

The grants help people pay for essentials such as heating bills and hospital transport costs, after they are diagnosed with cancer or underwent cancer treatment.

South Londoner Kewcha, who found out she had Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2007, was helped by a Macmillan grant: “I was able to access a Macmillan grant through my allocated key worker at King’s College Hospital. From this one-off payment I was able to purchase a bed which made life much easier for me, as at times I was too sick to leave the house. My Macmillan grant brought some comfort when I needed it most.

“Cancer brings many challenges but worrying about paying for essentials such as heating shouldn’t be one of them. I’d encourage anyone who is struggling with the financial impact of their diagnosis to contact Macmillan and access the help and support they can offer.”

Macmillan's research shows that more than eight out of ten people in the UK who get cancer also have to reckon with the financial impact of their diagnosis.

South Indian restaurant Ganapati started donating 40 meals a week to the Albrighton Community Centre in May 2020.

Claire Fischer, Ganapati owner since 2004, said: “We did it because people were falling through the net in terms of the support they needed.

“Lots of families couldn’t work and had had their daily routines turned upside down and the council were referring more and more people to the community centre.”

When lockdowns ended, and Covid-19 restrictions were lifted, Ganapati chose not to dahl the deliveries down.

Instead, weekly hauls of vegetable and chicken curries, along with batches of basmati, coconut and pilau rice, continued spicing up recipients’

diets.

The Albrighton Community Centre, Camberwell provides space for charities, community groups and private groups that support local communities.

The delicious curries were given to families struggling to support themselves during the coronavirus lockdowns.

Ganapati’s provision of ready-cooked meals will be particularly helpful these coming months as rising energy prices inflate the cost of home-cooking.

The restaurant’s donations have kept coming despite them having seen a recent dip in business.

Claire said: “The restaurant has picked up because people have been able to socialise again but the takeaway shop has taken a bit of nosedive.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk With a week to go until voters flock to the polls across Southwark for the local elections, the incumbent Labour party will be looking to increase its strong lead over the Liberal Democrat challengers - although with some residents grumbling over key issues like housing and transport, the opposition could be set to spring a surprise.

Labour strengthened their stranglehold on Southwark Council by a seat at the last elections in May 2018 and currently have 47 out of 63 councillors, although the hoped-for red surge in the north of the borough did not materialise. The Liberal Democrats ended up winning wards like Borough and Bankside and North Bermondsey fairly comfortably and have fourteen seats. One of the other two seats is held by an independent and the other is vacant, after former Labour councillor Johnson Situ stepped down last year.

London Bridge and West Bermondsey was much closer, with Labour missing out by only a few percentage points. The ward could be contested closely again, while the Labour-held Goose Green was also relatively close at the last election, with the Liberal Democrats only beaten into second place by a few percentage points in 2018. But it would take a huge vote swing in most other seats for Labour to lose this year.

The Conservatives don’t have any seats in Southwark, after losing Dulwich Village relatively narrowly in 2018. But the Tories are hoping to take back the southern ward, running a campaign based heavily around the local low-traffic neighbourhood (LTN), which has divided residents of the area.

The Tories have put up candidates in every ward of the borough, but have admitted that it could take decades for them to take control of Southwark.

Alongside Dulwich Village, they are focusing primarily on Dulwich Wood, where they were beaten very comfortably into second by Labour in 2018, and

South Bermondsey, where their three candidates gained less than 750 votes between them last time.

Perhaps the Tories are counting on voters remembering that South Bermondsey is the ward of Leo Pollak, Labour’s former council housing boss, who apologised and stepped down from the role last year after it was revealed he was running an anonymous Twitter account haranguing Southwark residents he disagreed with, but stands again next week as a councillor.

But both Labour and the Tories are insisting that mishaps like this and at a national party level have not affected how voters feel about them. Labour council leader Kieron Williams said that no one was bringing up Neil Coyle when he was out campaigning, despite the Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP being suspended earlier this year for an alleged racist outburst. Meanwhile the Conservatives have said that Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak being fined for breaking lockdown rules is not an issue for local voters either.

Candidates for the Green Party are standing in twenty out of 23 Southwark wards, with a full slate of candidates in each of London Bridge and West Bermondsey, Faraday, Nunhead and Queen’s Road and Rotherhithe. Like the Tories, the Greens currently have no seats on the council and are clear that they are not going to take control of the town hall this year. But if they get any councillors elected, they aim to act like a pressure group, pushing the ruling party to do more and act faster to tackle the climate crisis.

Other parties that residents can vote for in various wards include Piers Corbyn’s Let London Live party. Mr Corbyn, who is standing alone for his party in Faraday ward, would take an anti-lockdown, antivaccination stance on Covid, as well as

blowing Labour’s housing plans out of the water with 50,000 new council homes in the borough by 2029.

The Trade Union and Socialist Coalition are running four candidates: one each in Borough and Bankside, Camberwell Green, Rotherhithe and Rye Lane. The party wants to bring a “working voice to the council” and build more housing for key workers. Meanwhile Reform UK, the former Brexit Party, has a single candidate running in Old Kent Road ward - former bin man John Cronin, who wants to keep the streets clean, build more housing and get rid of LTNs. Realistically, it will be a huge challenge for the Liberal Democrats to take back control of the council on May 5, with Labour so solidly established across most of the borough. But with key points like council house building, low-traffic neighbourhoods and council home repairs still very contentious, it would be unwise to rule anything out.

One thing people of every political stripe in Southwark can hope for is an increase in voter turnout. Just over a third of people voted in the local elections last time. Who runs the council has a huge effect on everybody’s lives, and your vote every four years is your only chance to affect that.

‘homes, jobs and more parks’ Council leader says the Labour Party in Southwark have an impressive track record, with more to come...

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark voters should choose Labour again at the ballot box next week because of the party’s track record on the environment, housing and jobs, leader Kieron Williams has said - while admitting Covid-19 has slowed progress on some objectives.

Labour has controlled Southwark Council since 2010, but this is Cllr Williams’ first election since taking over from longstanding former leader Peter John in 2020.

Labour has promised to tackle Southwark’s housing crisis - with over 16,000 households currently on the borough’s council homes waiting list and thousands more stuck in temporary accommodation.

But the council has come under fire

from two sides - being criticised for planning new ‘infill’ developments on open spaces within existing estates, and for not building enough new homes: a recent freedom of information request revealed that Southwark has built just 166 new council homes between 2018 and 2022 - a rate of 42 per year.

Cllr Williams countered that he was “delighted” that Southwark had reached its target of having started 2,500 new council homes by this year. The council plans to build another 1,000 by 2026 and a further 500 homes for key workers, part of the long-term goal of 11,000 new council homes by 2043.

Much of the criticism around the infill programme has centred around the perception that under Labour, the council has not consulted enough with local residents about the new schemes.

Cllr Williams said that “engaging with residents is at the heart of everything we do,” pointing to the ballot schemes on the Tustin Estate in south Bermondsey and the Ledbury Estate in Peckham that allowed residents to decide on whether to demolish their homes as part of the regeneration process.

Southwark’s climate action plan, which aims to get to carbon neutral by 2030, has been named the second-best in London by Climate Emergency UK, an independent group. But the council has been criticised

by Southwark Extinction Rebellion for not providing a clear roadmap on the

concrete steps it will take to get there.

Asked if he thought that was fair, Cllr Williams pointed to the improvements Labour had in the works, including halving emissions by 2026, adding insulation in council homes and using renewable heating sources - and said the council was going to publish an update to the climate action plan this summer which would provide more details.

Labour says it has created 5,500 new jobs since 2018 and 4,000 apprenticeships, which is the most in London. If it stays in power, the party also plans to create another 2,000 ‘green’ jobs. Cllr Williams said he was “proud” of this achievement.

“We’re serious about tackling the climate emergency and supporting our residents at the same time,” he added.

Southwark Labour has been rocked by several recent controversies in Cllr Williams’ tenure as head of the council, including former council candidate in Rotherhithe Sharon Noonan-Gunning being deselected in mysterious circumstances despite being voted in by local members, former council homes boss Leo Pollak breaking the code of conduct by running an anonymous Twitter troll account - and then-Labour MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark Neil Coyle having the whip suspended for an alleged racist outburst in a parliamentary bar.

But Cllr Williams denied that Coyle’s alleged behaviour - for which he

has apologised - and the ongoing investigation had come up at all in conversations with local residents when he had been out campaigning.

On the contrary, the council boss was sure that residents he had been speaking to as part of the campaign were up in arms over Conservative Party misbehaviour at a national level, such as prime minister Boris Johnson and chancellor Rishi Sunak being among those fined by the police for lockdown-breaking parties. “People are sick and tired of being told it’s one rule for them, and one for the Tories,” he said.

A number of campaign pledges from the last elections have not come to fruition by 2022, including Labour promising to create the council’s own dedicated construction company.

Although this has not happened fully, in part because of Covid-19, Cllr Williams said that parts of the council house building process had now been taken in-house, as part of Labour’s wider programme to cut down on outsourcing services to private companies.

Another pledge that didn’t make it was Labour’s plan to offer free theatre tickets to Southwark residents.

Although a “great idea”, it was sadly cut short by theatres closing in 2020 and it is “quite understandable” that they have not restarted the programme, Cllr Williams said.

‘transparency, trams and tackling empty homes’ Hamish McCallum

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Why should Southwark residents vote Liberal Democrat in the local elections? Transparency and communication would be high on the list, says leader Hamish McCallum.

Cllr McCallum, who represents the North Bermondsey ward and is contesting his first election as leader, said that effective consultation with residents would be a top priority for the Liberal Democrats if they managed to wrest control of Tooley Street from Labour for the first time in twelve years on May 5.

“It’s just an under-resourced area at the moment,” the barrister said. “There’s consultation and there’s consultation and it’s clear that Labour aren’t doing enough.”

Cllr McCallum said if the Liberal Democrats gained control of the council they would take on a “co-design” approach that would give residents greater say over the decision-making process. He cited a recent decision to introduce parking permits in north Bermondsey, which he said had little support from residents but went ahead anyway.

Labour has maintained that it always carries out effective consultation,

although this does not always match up with many stories residents have told the News over the years of feeling that their voices are not being heard.

Elsewhere, Cllr McCallum laid into Labour for its housebuilding efforts, dismissing the targets that Labour said it had reached. “166 homes built over four years is really not good enough,” he said. Asked if it was unfair to criticise Labour for not building enough homes as well as often opposing the council’s controversial ‘infill’ housebuilding programme, Cllr McCallum said he disagreed.

“It’s not that I am against infill per se,” he said. “We have to take it on a case-bycase basis, and always make sure we are listening to people and taking their views into account. But also, there’s plenty of places across the borough where the council could be building more.

“Look at the Old Kent Road - there’s lots of new blocks going up there.

20,000 homes - if more of those were affordable, that would make a big difference in the housing crisis.” Some 7,000 of the new homes along the Old Kent Road are set to be “affordable”, according to the council’s action plan for the area, including 5,000 homes for social rent.

Cllr McCallum also pointed to the high number of empty homes in the borough, and the council’s failure to use certain

measures to bring empty private homes back into use since the last election. The Liberal Democrats said in 2018 that they would set up a dedicated taskforce to tackle empty homes. Cllr McCallum did not confirm that the party would do the same if they won control of the council this year, but said they would do more to bring empty homes into use than Labour is doing.

Southwark has 2,705 ‘long-term empty’ homes and has not used key levers like empty-dwelling management orders to take these over once since 2017. Labour has said that these measures are costly, time-consuming and complex, and that it is lobbying central government to give local authorities more, and simpler, powers to requisition empty private homes.

And discussing empty council homes, Cllr McCallum pointed to the 144-home Maydew House by Southwark Park, which has lain empty since 2015, as a

“blot on the skyline”.

The new homes planned near the Old Kent Road that Cllr McCallum referred to need to be serviced by public transport in order to be feasible, but the Bakerloo Line Extension has been shelved indefinitely. The Liberal Democrats have long proposed a tram to serve the area in the meantime, and have included the plan in their manifesto for this year.

But when asked how the party would fund this tram, Cllr McCallum declined to go into detail, saying there would have to be discussions with Transport for (TfL) and other partners. This is an issue that has sometimes been levelled at Southwark’s main opposition party by their opponents: that they have plenty of ideas, but less detail on how they would pay for them.

Active travel is another key issue for all parties, with cycling a key concern for the Liberal Democrats. The party would add another 100 TfL bike docking stations in Southwark, mostly focusing on the south and the east of the borough, which are currently underserved by the scheme.

To put that into perspective, there are about 800 bike docking stations across the whole of London at the moment, meaning this change would take Southwark from being one of the inner London boroughs with the least docking stations to having some of the most.

Each docking station costs nearly £200,000, according to TfL - meaning the Liberal Democrats would be spending nearly £20 million on the bikes, although presumably much of this would be contributed by developers.

Asked exactly where the new bikes

would go, Cllr McCallum said: “Again, this illustrates our approach - we would get into consultation and ask people where they wanted them to go.”

• Bring council homes back into use. Expand and accelerate the council’s buyback scheme for council housing and bring empty homes back into use.

• Tackle fly tipping. Reintroduce free bulky waste disposal services and invest in enforcement officers to issue fines against fly tippers.

• Make consultation worth having. Introduce a consultation guarantee to ensure that local people have a real say in council decisions.

‘We won’t win but need seats to hold the council to account’

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The Green Party isn’t realistically going to get into power in Southwark, one of its council candidates has said - but you should elect them as councillors because they will push Labour to tackle the climate crisis.

Claire Sheppard, who is standing in Nunhead and Queen’s Road, criticised Labour, who have been in control of the council since 2010, for not being clear enough on how it will get to carbon neutral by 2030.

“We’d have measurable targets we’re pragmatic about it,” she said. I don’t think it will be a shock to anyone if I say that I don’t think the Greens are going to become the majority group in the council.”

Labour has been slammed by various local climate-focused groups like Southwark Extinction Rebellion for its climate action plan - which has also been ranked second out of all the London boroughs.

“It is quite a lot of greenwashing,” Ms Sheppard said. Referring to Southwark’s second-placed ranking, she went on: “They’re trumpeting the fact that they’ve got the second-best

policy, but that’s kind of like when I was playing Monopoly with my sisters, you came second in a beauty contest, we always used to go ‘well who came first, a walrus?’”

Discussing the climate plan, she added: “It’s not got the detail you’d want… There’s not measurable targets.

They can pretend it does all they like but the facts and the detail are not there. There’s lots of lofty ‘we will do this’.

“When you look at the divesting of pensions, look at how long it took them to divest from Shell. Saying one thing and doing that thing are different. To coin a phrase, they’re talking the talk, but they’re not walking the walk.”

Both Labour and the Liberal Democrats have put the climate emergency front and centre of their campaigning. In a political landscape where everyone cares about the environment, why should anyone vote Green?

“The Green party isn’t just about climate justice, we’re very much about social justice,” Ms Sheppard said. “It’s written into our manifestos and our policy that we don’t have one without the other.

“Seriously, no climate justice without social justice, because the two are

so intrinsically linked, really. It feels increasingly like in the world there’s this fixation on economic growth and I don’t think that serves the people well apart from those on top of the tree.

“Trickle-down economics is a myth and we’ve seen that over the pandemic.

The gap between the richer and the poorer is getting wider, and the rich are getting richer… off people’s misery, while the people at the bottom are struggling to pay their bills. You’ve got Elon Musk spending £45 billion on Twitter. And I think people are starting to see through that and that’s a really key plank in our approach.”

A major aspect of this is housing, Ms Sheppard said. As someone who grew up in a council home, she said she knows “what a difference having safe, secure, affordable housing can make when you’re on a low income. It can completely change your world.”

She criticised the Labour council for adopting a “top-down” approach, not being in touch enough with local residents and working too closely with private developers. “This is their approach to regeneration, but it doesn’t look like regeneration to me.”

“My day job, my business that I’ve been running for the past decade… is actually market research and so I know a lot about questionnaire writing and I know a lot about how you write a leading question. And I’ve never seen a single fair consultation from Southwark Council.”

“I’m a leaseholder in a council block myself, I’ve been through two rounds of major works, I’ve heard the spin… it’s not true. All too often it feels like the council have made a decision and they’ve made that consultation work to get that decision through.We need to really fight that kind of thing.”

Although she and her Green colleagues won’t gain control of Tooley Street this year, Ms Sheppard said her personal aim was to be an excellent local councillor.

“I’ve lived here for over twenty years, I’ve run community choirs, I’ve done fundraisers, I’m ludicrously passionate about the place I live. I love Peckham, I love Nunhead. It’s the best place to live on Earth and I think our Labour candidates take our votes for granted.

And so do an awful lot of other people that I’ve spoken to.”

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Conservatives say Labour’s “ideologicallydriven, flawed policies” are giving the Tory campaign a “groundswell of momentum people have never seen before”.

Clive Rates and Tristan Honeyborne, Dulwich Village’s Conservative candidates and authors of the Conservatives’ Southwark manifesto, hope to recapture Dulwich Village, lost to Labour in 2018.

Rates, who was not standing back then, said: “The Conservative vote in Dulwich was a strongly remainer vote, therefore they did struggle a little bit.”

But Honeyborne says things will be different this time: “People have seen what it’s like having councillors that don’t listen and ignore you for four years.”

Southwark Conservatives are standing candidates in every ward, with a particular focus on the key battlegrounds of Duwich Village, Dulwich Wood and South Bermondsey.

Asked if they have even a fleeting hope of winning the council, Clive Rates and Tristan Honeyborne say “give us twenty years”.

But this hasn’t stopped them from drawing up a Southwark-wide manifesto. They hope it will challenge the council’s spending plans which they argue are inefficient and often forced through without consultation.

Top of the agenda is low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs). Honeyborne and Rates were inspired to enter politics by the LTNs that were imposed across Southwark during the first Coronavirus lockdown.

They say the lack of consultation on these schemes “shines a light on how the council do business” across the borough.

Honeyborne says while it’s “crucial to tackle the climate emergency, the political capital placed on road traffic is unwarranted”.

They are instead advocating for improved public transport to discourage car ownership and more bike storage units. They didn’t know how many bike storage units they wanted.

They also believe they could alter traffic flow to decrease area congestion.

Asked why they thought they could effectively re-route traffic, something they criticise the council for doing, Rates said: “Tristan’s a lawyer and I have a background in accountancy. We

can solve complex issues.”

Tristan Honeyborne describes Labour’s record of providing affordable housing as “poor" explaining: “Labour don’t stand up for ordinary people who most need to help.

“Many people have told us of empty social housing which has been left vacant for years. We are baffled as to why these are unused.

“If Southwark can’t manage the existing housing stock that is frankly going to waste, we should all be very nervous at the amount of public money being borrowed to fund additional housing.”

As councillors, they say they would push for a full audit on all its housing stock, and aim to fill empty homes.

However, the News pointed out that filling Southwark’s 2,705 long-term empty homes, many of which are in private hands, would hardly make a dent in the 16,000 person waiting list.

This seemed to surprise them and they struggled to come up with other ideas to solve the housing crisis.

On crime, Honeyborne said: “Barely a month goes by without hearing a harrowing story” of gun or knife crime.

Clive believes councillors have a duty to encourage and facilitate better crime reporting, an idea which he says the

local police back.

They have also pledged to cut council tax, saying they would aspire to emulate Conservative-run Wandsworth Council, where residents pay some of the lowest average council tax in the country.

Asked how they would continue adequately to fund Southwark's services with this cut, Honeyborne said they'd give residents "better bang for their buck".

They would do this through 'benchmark studies' which compare council spending in different departments to other wards with similar demographics, to see where costs could be cut.

They also said they would reverse Labour’s introduction of parking charges in Dulwich Park and around the tennis courts to enable better access to local greens spaces.

The News asked whether the national ‘partygate’ scandal would put off voters. Honeyborne said: “We’ve only been discussing local issues with people. If anybody does bring it up we talk about the impact we can have on people’s lives here.

“We’d be doing a disservice to people if we were to bring in other issues.

“We’ve been told by life-long Labour

voters that because of the way they’ve been treated by Southwark Labour, they will be voting for us.”

Key pledges:

Reform UK Candidate wants to abolish LTNs

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk John Cronin, a bin man who has lived around Old Kent Road his entire life, is the Old Kent Road ward candidate for Reform UK.

He wants to give “ordinary, hard-working residents a voice” through policies that increase housing provision, eradicate low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) and keep the streets clean.

On housing, he notes that the council which is “obsessed with building” isn’t using its powers to fill the thousands of empty homes that already exist.

He says when houses are built, people are given the impression “they’re not for us” because of the extortionate rates at which they are rented.

John feels that council policy fails to account for the results of consultations and pledges “to fight to ensure people’s views

are respected”.

He’s been dismayed by the LTNs introduced across the borough and predicts Labour will continue to introduce them.

Describing them as “unfair” John vows to eradicate all LTNs which he says “put all the pollution into one area” and make things “even worse”.

He fears if they win the election they’ll see the vote as an “endorsement of what they’ve done”.

He would also push to ensure that repairs to council housing’s heating and water systems are done properly and are not “botch jobs”.

Brother of the former Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, Piers was a Labour councillor in what was then Burgess Ward from 1986 to 1990.

Let London Live’s first priority is to oppose any future lockdown restrictions and coercionenforced vaccination programmes the government might impose.

Piers said: “The last two years the council have worked against the interests of the people by imposing these lockdown restrictions.

“The Labour Party has done nothing but knee jerk to Boris - it’s pathetic.”

He would also insist on a “full review” of all the “completely stupid LTNs that anyone with a car

hates” although he says he accepts that some may be justified.

As a Labour councillor thirty years ago he focussed on improving housing, protecting travellers’ rights and setting up the SELCHP energy facility, which converts household waste into energy.

Formally a TRA chair on his own Walworth housing estate, Piers says he is disgusted by the council’s demolitions of the Heygate and Aylesbury Estates.

He has pledged to oppose all private demolitions of existing social housing and build 50,000 council homes over the next seven years.

In April 2021, Corbyn stood for London mayor which saw him finish 11th with 20,604 votes.

The 22-year-old London Southbank University student nurse wants to bring a “working voice to the council".

Originally from Medway, he has lived in London for three years and is doing his placement working with children at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

He said: “Working in the NHS has given me a real insight into the dire state of our public services.”

“We're trying to give working people representation in the council - someone who comes for their background and understands the working class.”

“I’m a student nurse and understand the experiences people have been through.

Charlie believes housing is a “huge problem” and that

people in the area are being pushed out by the “wealthy elite”.

He would advocate for building more genuinely affordable homes, arguing that Labour’s target of 40,000 new homes by 2036 lacks ambition.

He would also campaign to give key workers priority on new housing, and provide more monetary support to people facing the cost of living crisis.

TUSC are also standing candidates in Camberwell Green, Rotherhithe, Rye Lane.

Shock of four killings on quiet Bermondsey estate

L

ike everyone else in Bermondsey and across London, we were shocked by the tragic news of the four killings on the Bonamy Estate this week. While the full details are yet to be confirmed, what is clear is that the people stabbed to death were a family spending an evening together.

What more relatable situation could there be, after two years spent largely apart, than a family gathering? And yet this shocking act of violence senselessly tore this family apart, and brought bloodshed and hordes of police and journalists to a quiet Bermondsey estate in the process.

Dolet Hill, one of the women who was killed, alongside her partner, daughter and granddaughter, retired from her job in the pharmacy at Guy’s Hospital four years ago, after more than two decades. A Guy’s spokesperson told us that she was “well-respected” and a union member who helped improve workplace conditions for her colleagues. Her niece told reporters she was “very loving, very kind, very generous”.

We will learn more about Ms Hill, Denton Burke, Tanysha Ofori-Akuffo and Samantha Drummonds in the days and weeks to come. In the meantime we send our condolences to their loved ones.

Peckham Artist setting the mood for new exhibition Stella Cardew and her twin sister would draw illustrations to make their own stories and create their own world while growing up in Kent, , writes Michael Holland.

Those early days spent involved with art led to a scholarship at Beckenham Art School for Stella, from where she went on to the Royal College of Art. Now, Stella has an exhibition coming up in East Dulwich.

It was while studying that Stella met and married artist John Underwood and had two children, Emily and Gabriel.

Alas, John died at a young age and Stella went on to marry Cornelius Cardew, the founder of the Scratch Orchestra, an experimental music ensemble, who also died too soon. They had sons Horace and Walter. Those life-changing setbacks, plus bringing up four children, did not hinder or deter Stella’s love of art.

She joined the Vanguard Studios and exhibited there many times. She has shown and sold at the R.A. and lectured at art colleges over the years. Stella

Cardew, unwilling to be pigeon-holed, has also participated in performance art.

Even now, she still draws every day.

The young Stella was initially influenced by the Post-Impressionist Pierre Bonnard, which showed in her early artworks. Nowadays her preferences are for more primitive art and names Rose Wylie as a current favourite. This change in style now informs her forthcoming exhibition.

She says of her work, ‘I want to paint

when I see a subject that is so full of possibilities. I gather my materials, and my energy; and, full of enthusiasm, I start with a predominant tone and colour to set the mood.’

For Stella’s upcoming show the theme will be based on the paintings of flowers exhibited at Dulwich Picture Gallery.

Stella says, ‘The Dutch flower paintings there have fountain compositions, and are in stone jars, with insects and often theatrical backdrops such as looming

clouds and thunder.’

How Ms Cardew will interpret these is something I can’t wait to see.

Nicola Walker of ‘Spooks’, ‘Last Tango in Halifax’ and ‘Unforgotten’ fame, is fantastic in this new production of Emlyn Williams’ 1938 play The Corn is Green, writes Reverend Katie Kelly...

In its first London revival in forty years, it follows the trials, travails and possible triumph of a do-gooder English teacher as she attempts to provide salvation through education in a poor Welsh mining village.

Miss Lily Moffatt arrives with suitcases of books and good intentions and a total lack of self-awareness.

Her unasked for project almost fails in the face of local opposition but in local lad Morgan Evans she discovers a diamond in the rough and the inspiration to continue her efforts. She is determined to give him a chance to escape the mines and fulfil his considerable potential.

The relationship between these two, with its developing depth and complexity, shines out amongst the slightly caricatured writing of the rest of the cast, though they do manage some strong performances.

The development of the plot towards its cliffhanger climax is mirrored in the staging. The play opens with a silhouetted 1920s party taking place

behind a screen. The character of Emlyn Williams as the writer of this semi-autobiographical story, bursts through and begins to narrate and direct the beginning of the play.

What is revealed behind the screen when it goes up, is not the lavish scene suggested by the party, but a completely bare and propless stage.

Thus begins a clever bit of direction

speaks his characters and their actions into being. Just as this was beginning to feel a little gratingly clever, the final set of the study schoolroom helped bring the cast brilliantly to the fore whilst Williams receded to the side-lines and gave his own story space.

This isn’t just a simple success story of rags to educational riches.

Although Williams gained a place at Oxford University, thanks in

part to the teaching and support of an English social worker, some of the tensions of being completely uprooted from one community without being entirely accepted in another are played out in his protagonist Morgan Evans’ storyline.

These might be familiar to many first-generation University goers, even today. His drunken argument with Miss Moffatt expresses some of the frustrations of being someone’s project and led to a greater balance and more nuance in their relationship as well as an extremely well-acted growth in character for the teacher.

To say that this is a gentle piece of old-fashioned story telling is no criticism. The world is on fire and sometimes theatre is allowed to be entertaining and only mildly thought provoking. The story is enlivened by creative direction and very beautiful music, provided by the ever-present chorus of Welsh singing miners. All in all, a happy and harmonious night out.

Whistling goodbye to Sondheim Last November musical theatre fans mourned the loss of Steven Sondheim, his music and lyrics favourites in cabaret clubs and theatres around the world. , writes Christopher Peacock...

The Southwark Playhouse plays host to Anyone Can Whistle. One of his earlier works, it was only the third show where he wrote both the music and lyrics.

Arthur Laurents’ book is the story of a small American town whose morally corrupt mayor, Cora Hoover Hooper, in a bid to generate more revenue from tourism, gets her team to stage a fake miracle. When the news of this miracle gets out they receive a visit from Nurse Fay Apple and her patients from the Cookie Jar, the local insane asylum.

Along with a visit from a mysterious Dr Hapgood from out of town, the line between who is insane and who isn’t is questioned and blurred. Confusing, barmy and hard to follow, the story doesn’t do justice to carry the songs that have independently gone on to become a part of the celebrated canon of Sondheim. Secondary storylines get lost and although the notion of visiting the sites of miracles may seem timeless, this show is very dated.

Production decisions from director Georgie Rankcom and Set and Costume designer Cory Shipp are certainly bold if misjudged. The show is staged in the traverse with the audience divided either side of a thin strip of stage resulting in songs being delivered to only half the audience at any given time. Highly coloured costumes, along with the lighting design, attempt to evoke the 60s but don’t enhance the production.

A very bright performance from Chrystine Symone as Nurse Fay is the highlight of the cast, even when her character disguises herself as a French vamp Miracle Inspector. Alex Young, as the Mayor, valiantly attempts to carry the show’s comedy with some success.

A Broadway flop back in 1964 when the show only made it to 9 full performances before negative reviews resulted in the end of the production’s run. Few have attempted to resurrect this curiosity from Broadway’s past and this attempt will not be to everyone’s taste.

However, those fans of Sondheim’s music will certainly enjoy seeing There Won’t Be Trumpets, Anyone Can Whistle, and Everybody Says Don’t performed in their original context.

BONAR ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) 1.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable various works to be carried out, it made, an order, the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Cathedral Street, between Winchester Square to No’s 3 Palace House (b) Hayles Street, between St Georges Road and No’s 19 (c) Rope Street, between Rainbow Quay and Swedish Quay (d) Burrell Street, at it’s junction with Southwark Sreet (e) Hopton Street, northbound lane of carriageway (f) Rye Passage, at it’s junction with Nigel Road (g) Dayton Grove, between Colls Road and York Grove (h) Larcom Street, at it’s junction with Walworth Road

sport@southwarknews.co.uk RYAN PATEL continued his fine start to the season with a matchwinning 102 as Surrey confirmed their position as the LV= Insurance County Championship’s early pace-setters by beating Somerset by three wickets at the Kia Oval.

Surrey, needing 237 to win a fiercely-contested Division One match, completed their second victory from the first three games just before 5pm on the final afternoon, with Patel joined by Ben Foakes in a decisive fourth wicket partnership of 66.

Foakes was earlier passed fit to resume playing after concussion tests, following his nasty collision with first slip Jamie Overton on day three, when both players dived for an edge from Tom Banton. Foakes somehow managed to hold on to the ball despite hitting his head hard against Overton’s shoulder and, after lengthy treatment, leaving the field with a cut under his right ear.

But Foakes played skilfully for 48 not out after joining Patel at 106 for three, Surrey having just lost both Hashim Amla, for 14, and Ollie Pope, for 5, in the first half-hour after lunch.

When Patel finally fell, edging Josh Davey behind after a superb 133-ball innings featuring 14 fours and plenty of judicious attacking intent, Surrey’s total had reached 172 and much of the hard work had been done.

Certainly, without Patel’s aggressive knock, his second championship hundred and a career-best, Surrey’s chase would have been far trickier than it already looked on a pitch still giving the bowlers enough reasons for optimism.

Sam Curran’s breezy 33, including two sixes immediately after tea off Jack Leach, helped Foakes to steer Surrey across the finishing line, although there was a final stutter when Curran edged Jack Brooks behind, Will Jacks (1) carved Craig Overton, bowling despite a bruised toe, to gully and Jordan Clark slogged Brooks to mid on to go for six with only three runs required.

It is a sorry seventh successive championship defeat for Somerset, going back to the end of last summer.

first arrived after eight overs’ play. On the resumption, he initially reached 16 from 27 balls before going berserk and plundering 115 from his next 43, with 10 sixes.

Since then, he finished last summer with a run of good scores and, in this campaign, Patel has so far scored 256 runs in five championship innings at an average of 64.

Starting the final day on 196 for 9, a lead of 225, Somerset’s last pair Davey and Brooks added only another 11 runs in 3.3 overs before Davey edged a Clark away-swinger to first slip to go for 12.

Clark finished with the impressive figures of four for 52.

Patel and Rory Burns batted positively from ball one of Surrey’s chase, with skipper Burns taking two fours from Overton in the third over – first slicing him to third man and following it up two balls later with a far more authoritative square drive.

Peter Siddle beat Patel early on with a magnificent ball, but the left-hander responded by hitting him through square cover for four and then taking several more eye-catching boundaries in quick succession off Somerset’s new ball bowlers. First he straight drove Siddle for four before, in the space of three balls, pulling and slapping high over mid off when Overton twice pitched short.

Burns top-edged an attempted hook at Overton high over the keeper for four, but the former England Test opener was less fortunate when on 17 he went after another short one, this time from Brooks’ fifth ball, and skied to Davey at wide long leg.

Amla got going with a leg-glanced four off Brooks, and the seamer suffered further punishment as Patel pulled, extra cover drove and swatted through midwicket to collect three more fours.

Patel reached fifty from 60 balls, just before lunch, but Amla departed soon after the interval when Siddle – with the fourth ball of his second spell – found some extra lift to have the former South Africa great held by keeper Steven Davies, the ball looping up gently after Matt Renshaw failed to hold on to the edge at second slip.

Pope cut to gully a ball from Brooks that was too close to him for the stroke, and Tom Abell took a smart tumbling catch to bring Somerset right back into the contest. Thanks to Patel, Foakes and Curran, however, it was Surrey’s day.

Patel said: “We are very happy with that win, especially as we were behind the game a little after the first innings.

“As against Hampshire last week [when Kemar Roach was injured early on] our bowlers have been unbelievable. James Taylor couldn’t bowl in their second innings but

everyone else stood up and to take seven wickets after tea yesterday turned the game on its head. We couldn’t have asked any more of our bowlers in these last two victories.

“Of course it was nice to take a wicket myself yesterday when I was asked to bowl [as a result of Taylor’s back spasm injury] and it was a great feeling today to get to a hundred after having had a couple of good starts in the previous two championship fixtures this season.

(Patel scored 75 v Warwickshire and then 58 v Hampshire last week.)

“To get 102 in a winning cause obviously makes it even better, and I am very happy indeed with where my game is at now. I’ve just got a lot more confidence in my ability after a winter of hard work and also a lot of work last summer. Both Gareth Batty and Vikram Solanki [current and previous Surrey head coaches] have been brilliant with me.”

Fisher round off season in style as boss sets target

AFTER FISHER rounded off a fantastic final week of the season, with a 7-0 victory over Tower Hamlets on Easter Monday and a last-day 6-2 rout of K Sports, manager Ajay Ashanike was feeling optimistic as he looked ahead to the next campaign.

After a disappointing March, when the Fish were in fifteenth after targeting a top-ten finish, Ashanike said it was “vital the boys finish the season strong and

take that momentum into next season”.

That is exactly what Fisher did in the final month. They did not lose in six matches in April and they were the only side in the bottom half of the table to finish with a positive goal difference.

Fisher ended the season in thirteenth place.

Ashanike is looking for squad consistency going into next season. He explained: “The turnover of players has been high this year. I believe if I can keep at least 80 per cent of the squad we have we’ll be in a great position to compete certainly for top ten and maybe higher.”

There are three positions in need of strengthening, according to the boss: “an experienced centre-half, a central midfielder and a striker. I believe with those I’d have the squad right where I want it.”

It’s been no secret that Fisher work with no budget. For Ashanike and his coaching staff it’s all about giving young players a chance. “I’m happy to not have a budget, to be honest,” he said. “I love the job I do and giving young talents a chance.

“The best thing for me is finding these players from divisions below ours and

giving them a chance to showcase their ability and help them progress in their footballing journey.”

There will be plenty of positives to take from Fisher’s final game of the season, a brilliant victory over a young K Sports side at St Paul’s.

The Fisher players put on an excellent showing in front of over 200 Fisher faithful in attendance. Star man Isaac Thompson scored a hat trick and fittingly one of the goals of the season with the final kick of the campaign, a sensational strike from 25 yards that crashed off the underside of the

crossbar and in.

It was all smiles for Thompson who picked up three end-of-season awards after the match: top-scorer, as well as players’ player and supporters’ young player of the year. Ajay will be hopeful Thompson sticks around as he looks to build his side for next season.

Ashanike’s final message at the end of the season was typically humble.

Ashanike thanked “the fans that turn up every week, my coaching staff who have been unbelievable all season, the volunteers around the ground and of course the players”.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THERE ARE two things we know for sure about this Millwall team.

One is that they make things as difficult as possible for themselves and the other is that they will never give up.

Birmingham City away should have been three points. It had to be. Yet somehow the Lions contrived to be 2-1 down deep into injury-time.

Lee Bowyer’s side had the proverbial nothing to play for. They had been beaten 6-1 at Blackpool the previous Monday.

But you knew the former West Ham and Charlton midfielder and Addicks boss would have his side up for this.

To rub salt into what appeared was going to be a deep wound, former Charlton striker Lyle Taylor scored from the penalty spot with eleven minutes left, a goal that could have all but ended the Lions’ play-off hopes.

Taylor enjoyed that moment and several others as at one point he performed a little dance after the ball went out off a Millwall player for a throw-in. The Blues forward also appeared to mock Bartosz Bialkowski after putting the hosts 2-1 up. It certainly didn’t go unnoticed by

Millwall’s media team, who on Sunday put up a montage of those moments followed by Taylor’s expression when the Lions were awarded a penalty in the 96th minute.

Taylor had won his side’s penalty. It seemed soft, though George Saville did have his arms around his opponent from a free-kick. Taylor didn’t need much of an invitation to hit the turf.

Millwall’s penalty was arguably softer still, and was perhaps given against Taylor after Cooper went down.

Benik Afobe kept his cool to send Neil Etheridge the wrong way in front of the away fans, almost 2,000 of whom had made the trip to the Midlands.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett made three changes from the side that started in the 2-1 win against Hull City at The Den the previous Monday.

Captain Shaun Hutchinson returned for the injured Scott Malone, with Cooper moving to the left side of the back three and Murray Wallace pushing up to left wing-back.

Maikel Kieftenbeld replaced Billy Mitchell – ending a run of 31 consecutive starts for the 21-year-old midfielder – and Oliver Burke started in place of Tyler Burey in the front three.

Blues went close in just the second minute when Gary Gardner’s free-kick

hit the post before Juninho Bacuna fired over in the ninth minute.

Saville couldn’t test Etheridge with a free-kick in the thirteenth minute and Bowyer’s side threatened again when Bacuna delivered a corner but George Friend headed wide.

Marc Roberts prevented Tom Bradshaw from having an attempt on goal in the on 31 minutes as Blues answered Bowyer’s demand to show resilience after their defeat at Blackpool in their previous game.

But their goal led a charmed life four minutes later as first Murray Wallace went close and then Hutchinson’s effort was cleared off the line.

Bacuna was a consistent danger to the visitors as he curled a shot wide and then struck the woodwork with another attempt just before half-time.

The warning signs were there for the Lions but disaster struck two minutes into the second half when Bacuna finally beat Bialkowski after a dreadful mix-up in the Lions defence and a botched clearance from Cooper.

That concession was compounded when Sheffield United went ahead against Cardiff City in the exact same minute of their game to go four points clear of Millwall in the live table.

Etheridge saved from Bradshaw on 55 minutes before a minute later

Bialkowski kept out Taylor’s shot from outside the box.

Saville was off-target from Bradshaw’s cross and in desperate need of a goal Rowett sent on Mason Bennett for Hutchinson in the 63rd minute and switched to four at the back.

Five minutes later, that moved paid off as Bennett’s cross was headed across the six-yard box by Danny McNamara and Burke got his second goal for Millwall.

But as the Lions were pushing for the winner they needed it was Birmingham who went in front again when Taylor beat Bialkowski from the penalty spot in the 79th minute.

Rowett sent on Burey for Bradshaw a minute later and Ryan Leonard for McNamara three minutes from time.

Birmingham pushed for a third but it was Millwall who levelled again through Afobe.

But it’s now an outside chance for the top six. Millwall need favours from others. They had hoped for one from their former skipper Steve Morison, but Cardiff are in poor form and went down to the Blades.

If Millwall don’t beat Peterborough this Saturday their play-off challenge will be all but over no matter what happens elsewhere.

Bradders eyes double target Striker is one goal shy of ten this season – and hasn’t given up on potential Wales call-up

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL STRIKER Tom Bradshaw is targeting reaching double-figures for goals this season in the last two games – which could put him in the frame for a call-up for Wales.

Bradshaw has scored nine times this season, all of them in his last eighteen appearances.

At one point this season, Bradshaw, 29, was second only to Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic for goals-per-minutes. Mitrovic has scored 41 goals in 41 games for his club this season and broke the Championship record.

Bradshaw is currently seventh on the list across the whole season with a goal every 142 minutes.

If Bradshaw scores against Peterborough United or AFC Bournemouth he would join team-mate Benik Afobe in reaching ten or more goals in the campaign.

It’s something that he is thinking about and a tally he would be proud of.

“Yeah, definitely, especially considering the lack of games I’ve played this year, to get to double-figures would be a real milestone,” Bradshaw said. “It’s one I really want to achieve going into the last two games.

“I want us to pick up six points in the next two games and ideally I would pick up at least one goal. It’s something that I’m going into confidently and I’m excited for.

“I was sent a stat about two or three days ago about goals-to-minutes ratio. It was the second-highest behind Mitrovic in the league. I think at the time it was a goal every 133 minutes, which I was really happy about.

“I’ve been a little bit unlucky with injuries but the games I have played I’ve really enjoyed and felt confident.

“In football it’s one of those things where it seems to have fallen into place this year, whether that’s playing up front with Benik or just having that self-belief.

I’ve taken the pressure off myself and just enjoyed my football and it seems to have really worked.”

Millwall need to win their last two games and hope other results involving Sheffield United and Blackburn Rovers go their way. (Middlesbrough were in action against Cardiff on Wednesday night, after the News had gone to press.)

Bradshaw described the mood of the squad as they try to keep their top-six challenge going to the last day.

“All the way throughout the season it’s been us chasing, which is good in a way,” Bradshaw said. “Obviously you’d rather be in the play-off places but we’ve had no pressure on us all season.

“I went to training [Tuesday]

morning and it was just a really relaxed atmosphere. No one seems tense or wound up or anything. It’s very relaxed and that’s exactly the energy we need going into the last two games where ultimately it’s not in our hands.

“We haven’t pressure on us so we’ll just do what we do and try to pick up the three points against Peterborough and see where we are then.

“That’s all we can do and then hope things go our way elsewhere.

“I think if any Millwall fan or player or member of staff had been offered the position we’re in now at the start of the year – three points off it with two games to play – most people would have taken it.

“We’re still in a strong position but obviously we’re relying on other teams doing us favours. First things first, we must win our game to still have a chance.

That’s what our full focus is on but we’ll have our fingers crossed on Friday night [when Sheffield United travel to Queens Park Rangers].

“I’ll have my eye [on the other games]. To be honest, I’m not great at watching football because I know it’s not something I can affect. But I’ll be keeping an eye on them and will have notifications on my phone if anyone scores.”

Millwall were eleven points adrift of the play-offs when they lost 1-0 to Blackpool in January. Soon after that the Lions won

five games in a row.

“It’s a strange division. Football is in general and it’s really hard to put your finger on why you’re in good runs of form and what you’ve done differently as opposed to when you were in a bad run of form,” Bradshaw said.

“I think it’s just confidence. We’ve obviously had a much stronger second half of the season which is quite common with Millwall, after Christmas we generally perform better.

“We’ve done brilliantly this year to close that gap to be serious contenders.

We’re not there through favours or necessarily luck, we’re there because we’ve earned the points and we deserve to be there.

“We’ll be taking that confidence into the last two games and fingers crossed we can get a little bit of luck in the other games elsewhere.”

Millwall’s position is even more remarkable considering every outfield player has been unavailable at some time in the season through injury or after positive Covid-19 test results.

Bradshaw said: “That’s a real feather in our cap. At one point this season we had nine or ten players unavailable. Then we went on a run of winning five games.

That showed the character we’ve got throughout the dressing room and the belief that we’ve got as a team. We had that depth that other players were able to step up and perform.

“We’ve done ourselves proud this year and there’s no doubt that we can go and pick up six points in the next two games and be in the mix for the play-offs.”

Bradshaw has played three times for Wales and won his last cap in 2016.

Wales will face either Scotland or Ukraine in their play-off final in June for a place in Qatar.

Bradshaw was in the provisional squad for Euro 2016 but a calf injury ended his chances of going to the tournament.

Shrewsbury-born Bradshaw knows it’s a long shot, but he hasn’t given up hope of a call from Wales caretaker boss Rob Page.

“There were a few grumblings [about a potential call-up] before I got injured [in January], a few messages here and there,” Bradshaw said. “But I haven’t heard anything solid for a little while.

“Obviously it’s still a big passion of mine to play for my country. All I can do is keep trying to play well and score goals for Millwall and see where that takes me.

“It’s been a little while since I was in the last camp. I’d like to think that scoring goals in the top half of the Championship and competing for the play-offs would mean there’s a chance.

“But I can’t really comment on it [not hearing anything from the Wales management]. I don’t know, to be honest.

Like I say, all I can do is keeping playing well and scoring goals and hopefully the call will come.”

Lions have fingers crossed for favours

Play-off challenge could effectively end on Friday night if rivals win

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ALL OF Millwall will have fingers crossed on Friday night that their play-off challenge won’t be over before they kick a ball against Peterborough United at The Den the following day.

If Sheffield United beat Queens Park Rangers at the Kiyan Prince Foundation stadium, they would move six points clear of the Lions. Paul Heckingbottom’s side would also increase their plus-six goal difference over Millwall, who surely wouldn’t be able to claw back the deficit in their final two games.

Blackburn Rovers went above the Lions on goal difference after their 4-1 win at Preston North End on Monday night.

Middlesbrough, who were two points behind Millwall, were playing their game in hand against Steve Morison’s Cardiff City at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday.

Millwall will be without Scott Malone who has a hamstring injury. Jed Wallace is struggling to be fit as he tries to recover from a groin problem. Wallace hadn’t trained by Tuesday.

Murray Wallace should continue at left wing-back with Shaun Hutchinson in the middle of the back three.

Daniel Ballard is also set to be out with a quad problem, meaning the centre-back may have played his last game for the Lions on loan from Arsenal.

Ryan Leonard or George Evans could replace Ballard on the right side of the back three.

Alternatively, Lions boss Gary Rowett could switch to a back four with Hutchinson partnering Jake Cooper in the middle of the defence and Wallace at leftback.

Millwall have the second-best home record in the league this season Although Jed Wallace is a major doubt, switching to a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 is an option. Rowett has more attackers available with Mason Bennett back and the likes of Oliver Burke, Tyler Burey and Sheyi Ojo pushing for starts in those forward positions.

Rowett also has plenty of options in central midfield. Billy Mitchell’s run of 31 consecutive starts ended last weekend when he was on the bench against Birmingham City. Rowett felt the 21-year-old midfielder needed a rest and he should be refreshed if he is recalled

against the Posh.

Grant McCann’s side are one of the three that have been relegated this season, along with Derby County and Barnsley.

That could make them tricky opponents to plan against as McCann could give chances to different players with a view to preparing for League One next season.

Hull City also had little to play for in Millwall’s last home game, and it took the hosts until the second half to break them down.

The game was close to a sell-out earlier

this week as Lions fans snapped up tickets for what they hope won’t be the last home fixture of the campaign.

Remarkably, despite their budget, and the injury and Covid-19 problems this season that has meant all of the outfield players being unavailable at some point, Millwall were top of the home league table before Fulham beat Preston last week to confirm their promotion to the Premier League.

Millwall will need all that support this weekend – and hope Sheffield United slip up.

Boateng makes comeback in under-23s draw

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk NANA BOATENG made his return from injury as Millwall’s Professional Development side drew 1-1 against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night.

The Lions went in front against the Blades – who had already won the Professional Development League Northern Section – through Jayden Davis in the first half, but the hosts equalised ten minutes from time.

Kevin Nugent’s side could have doubled their lead but defender Karmal Grant twice headed wide from Sean O’Brien setpiece deliveries.

Nugent was relatively pleased with his side’s performance, their first of three games in seven days to end their season.

“They’re a very good side,” Nugent said.

“They’re well drilled and have lots of good players. They’ve won their League and been beaten twice all season.

“We had to set up to be solid and not get beaten, and I thought we were just that,

defending well from front to back.

“We got our goal early on and had another couple of opportunities from set-pieces, so it’s disappointing that we conceded what we consider a poor goal for the equaliser.

“We’re poor in possession, but they do get a bit of luck and a ricochet as well.

We’re disappointed with that, but it was a good performance and a good point.”

Boateng, 19, made his senior debut for the Lions in the 2-1 defeat against Crystal Palace in the third round of the FA Cup in January before injuring his ankle.

Nugent added: “It was good to get Nana back. It was his first game for a while and he got 60 minutes.”

Next up for Millwall’s under-23s is a home game with Colchester United this Friday afternoon.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT is not thinking about the potential changes to his squad over the summer – as it’s “full steam ahead” for the last two games of the season.

Millwall still don’t know which division they will be in as they aim to gate-crash the top six and get a shot at promotion to the Premier League for the first time.

Whether it is the top flight or a sixth consecutive season in the Championship, there is set to be a squad overhaul in the next transfer window.

That’s partly conditioned by having a senior squad with five loanees who will

all return to their clubs after the end of the campaign.

There are several players set to be out of contract, including club captain Alex Pearce, Jed Wallace and Connor Mahoney.

Rowett also spoke in January about a different approach in recruitment, targeting young, mobile attacking players. The Lions are interested in a loan deal for Elliott Anderson, a nineteen-year-old Newcastle midfielder who has been on loan at League Two Bristol Rovers in the second half of the season.

Millwall host Peterborough United at a sold-out Den this Saturday.

The Posh are already relegated but Rowett is focusing more on his side than speculating over whether Grant

McCann will change his team or the system to experiment ahead of next season in League One. Rowett preferred not to talk about any potential summer plans while Millwall are still in the play-off race.

“At this moment in time we want to get through as competitively as we can to the end of the season,” Rowett said.

“The end of the season or if we can’t get mathematically into the top six is the time to sit down and reflect on the squad and what’s required for next season.

“At the moment we’re full steam ahead for Saturday hoping that we can take it into the last weekend of the season.

“You have to expect an opposition fully motivated, expect that if they do make any changes those changes

will be players who are enthusiastic who haven’t played as much with an opportunity.

“Or, if they go with the same players, those players have performed well in the last four or five games.

“Peterborough are very similar to Hull when we played them. They might be in a poor position in the league but their actual recent form has been much better.

“We have to approach the game thinking about our mentality and not speculate on the opposition’s circumstances. I’m sure they’ll want to finish the season well, but we’ve got to take care of business and do what we need to do to give ourselves the best chance of getting three points.

“That’s our only focus, really.”

Lions make surprise fan move

By Alex Grace sport@southwarknews.co.uk IN A surprise move, Millwall announced that home fans would be allowed to purchase tickets in the North Stand of The Den for this Saturday’s visit of Peterborough United – which could see the biggest attendance of the season in SE16.

The Lions face the alreadyrelegated Posh in what is the final home game of the regular season, needing a win to take their fight for a place in the play-offs to the last game of the season away to Bournemouth, which has sold out.

The Barry Kitchener Stand has completely sold out, and very few tickets remained earlier this week for both the Dockers Stand and the Cold Blow Lane end.

Millwall fans have been allocated five blocks in the North Stand, usually reserved only for visiting supporters. No visiting team has been given the bottom tier of the stand this season.

A ticket update on the Millwall website read: “In a rare move, Lions supporters will now be able to purchase tickets in both tiers of the North Stand to maximise the atmosphere inside the stadium.

“This decision has been made to allow more home fans to attend the club’s biggest game of the season – and we cannot wait to hear you roaring from all four sides of The Den.” Gary Rowett’s side have the second best home record in the league this season, taking 42 points from their 22 games – only Premier Leaguebound Fulham have a better record.
