The controversial deal, signed by Home Secretary Priti Patel on Thursday 14 April, would see Rwanda take on responsibility for migrants entering the UK via illegal routes.

Dulwich Village is one of the few electoral wards in Southwark that could turn blue in the local elections this May. So, the News headed to Dulwich Park to find out what soon-to-be voters made of the Conservative party’s Rwanda scheme.

Nigel Blakelock, Dulwich Village resident said: “I think it’s a really bad idea. The Home Secretary is, I think a rather unfeeling person to put it mildly. They are going somewhere where god knows what’ll happen to them. I’m glad I’m not one of them.”

Actor, Alexander Jarrett, 31, who has lived in Dulwich Village for twenty years, said: “It’s morally wrong. What’s sickening about it is it’s the kind of thing that they know will be popular with the Tory base.”

Last year 28,526 people are known to have illegally crossed the English Channel in small boats, up from 8,404 in 2020.

Francis Kiwanuka, Dulwich Village resident, said: “Moving migrants is going to be very costly but also, from a legal perspective, there will be legal challenges and some of those appeals might be successful.”

Finn Glendon agreed: “I have been to Rwanda and I know there is not really the infrastructure to support people who are traumatised.”

Luke O’Shea-Phillips, who works in photography, said: “I don’t truly believe it’s anything they’re ever going to do. It’s false flag waving in order to manipulate the mindset around how bad the Tories are doing.”

The UK government has paid Rwanda £120 million as part of the deal. The Times has reported that it would cost between £20,000 and £30,000 for each migrant to be sent to Rwanda.

Dulwich Village councillor candidates for the Conservative Party have been approached for comment.

The mission of one 79-year-old Californian woman to breathe life into Peckham Rye’s American garden

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A 79-year-old Peckham woman is on a mission to revive Peckham Rye’s American Garden, over 100 years after it was first built.

Since 2019, Nancy Coleman-Frank, who turns 80 next week, and is originally from Southern California, has raised roughly £75,000 in grants.

‘American gardens’ took root in Britain during the 18th century thanks to Peter Collinson - a London botanist who pioneered the import of plants and seeds from North America.

They were notable for their acidic soil and featuring American plants such as rhododendron, azalea, magnolia, and kalmia.

Nancy said: “Three or four years ago I was researching Peter Collinson and ran into the American Garden in Peckham Rye Park. I was dismayed by its condition and started the charity to reinvigorate it.

“We also want to support Peckham Rye Park, which is an important park used by everyone, and make it even more wonderful than it already is.”

Through grants given by Viridor Credits, the American Embassy and the Local Postcode Trust, the garden, first built in 1907, is gradually improving.

The money has been used for landscaping, acidifying the soil, and laying trees, plants and shrubs.

Most recently, modern benches were installed at the north, south and middle of the garden.

The 2020 American Embassy grant came with a visit from US Ambassador Robert Wood Johnson who, alongside MP Harriet Harman, planted a celebratory maple tree.

Once the garden is established, Nancy hopes it will become a place of education - with readings, lectures and workshops held in its confines.

Nancy spent most her life in Southern California, where she worked as a teacher and academic, educating in early child education across the United States.

In 2017, love blossomed for Nancy who, through her work on the American Garden, met 92-year-old local Peckham historian, Derek Kinrade. They married in 2018.

Through her research, Nancy now believes Peckham may be home to a second, forgotten garden once owned by Peter Collinson, which may have been visited by Benjamin Franklin and Carl Linaeus, but is undertaking more research in order to verify this.

K-pop festival jumps the gun promoting event Southwark Park would be closed for two week if council approves the event Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A K-pop festival planned for Southwark Park has not yet been given a licence by Southwark Council - despite the organisers appearing to suggest it will go ahead.

Festival in Southwark Park this summer on July 30-31 - billed as Europe’s first outdoor Korean music festival.

Southwark Council consulted on the proposal earlier this year and has yet to make an official announcement.

But the Southwark Park Association 1869 (SPA) were dismayed to find that an MIK Festival website and Twitter page had been set up over the weekend, strongly suggesting that the festival was going ahead.

An email from the council’s events team to SPA said this was not the case and that Proud Events were promoting the event “subject to licence” and “entirely at their own risk”.

The festival would take place on the cricket pitch in the southern part of

the park, bounded by the cafe and gallery to the north, and the athletics track to the south.

Building would start on the morning of July 20 and the dismantling process would finish in the evening of August 5 – meaning disruption to the usual functioning of the park over more than two weeks in total.

Organisers Proud Events have not responded to multiple requests for comment. The website for the festival does not currently have tickets on sale, but says more is to come soon.

Proud Events said they wanted to hold the event – which they said would be Europe’s first outdoor K-pop festival – in Southwark Park because of the area’s young, diverse population and good transport links.

Elephant accountant hopes to be Masterchef

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk An Elephant and Castle accountant is hoping to swap balance sheets for cookbooks on this year's edition of hit BBC show Masterchef.

Mark, 34, moved to the UK in 2012 and is originally from the Philippines.

He appeared on Tuesday night (April 19) in the fifth and final week of heats to determine who gets into the show proper.

I like to incorporate this with European and modern style of cooking.

"My husband is British and his family are traditional cooks, so that has influenced my style too."

Masterchef, which originally launched in 1990, sees judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace look for the UK's top amateur chef every year.

Hughes quits TSB as last bank leaves Blue

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Former Bermondsey MP Sir Simon Hughes has closed his TSB account and is calling on locals to do the same in protest at the bank closing its Southwark Park Road branch.

TSB is closing its branch near Bermondsey's Blue market next Wednesday (April 27), becoming the last bank to leave the area. The nearest TSB branch will now be in Peckham.

Sir Simon told the News: "After many years of banking with TSB in the Blue, and because I believe it is a really bad move for TSB to pull out of the Blue, I shall stop using TSB from this month. This will be the last bank leaving the Blue and is a bad move when everybody should be trying to support local shopping centres.

"I shall move to another bank in SE1 or SE16 but have not decided which yet. I hope other customers will do the same - to send a big message to TSB that Bermondsey people and businesses will not just accept this closure without making the best protest we can.”

A spokesperson for TSB said: "We have not taken the decision to close our Bermondsey branch lightly, but we have to respond to declining branch use and increasing numbers of customers switching to digital banking services.

"Customer transactions at the branch have fallen by 30% since January 2019 and we see no prospect of branch transactions returning to pre-Covid levels.

"The closest Post Office is located under 0.1 miles from the Bermondsey branch and the nearest free to use ATM is under 0.1 miles away.

Coyle slams renter campaigners for mess at office Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey MP Neil Coyle has criticised a protest by a "silly" private renters' protest group for leaving litter outside his office, which his team had to clear up afterwards.

Coyle, the chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on homelessness, was supposed to meet the protest by renters' group Acorn outside his Jamaica Road office earlier in April, before "diaries changed", he said. The group then met in Southwark Park before marching to his office and leaving leaflets and a letter calling for more help for private renters.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP told the News: "Their silly stunt and flyposting which needed cleaning up means they’ve now fallen off my to do list.

But I’ll keep working for real renters and constituents whatever the silly tactics of an unrepresentative sideshow group.

"My team had to clean their silly flyposting. It stops them doing their real job. It is ridiculous when we probably agree on more than we disagree but they chose a stupid course of action and undermined their own objectives."

A spokesperson for Acorn said: “Southwark has some of the least affordable rents in the country, so it is disappointing that Mr Coyle wasn’t able to make the rally and also that he thinks his renters in his constituency raising these issues are ‘silly’.

“Acorn is the leading voice for private renters across the country and we hope

we can work with Mr Coyle to improve support for renters in his constituency.”

The protest on April 8 aimed to draw attention to the trials and tribulations private renters face ahead of a government policy document on rental reforms, due to be published this spring.

Losal, 29, who spoke at the Southwark Park event, said: "I was born on a London council estate and have lived in London all my life. Most people I grew up with

have been pushed away from the areas we came from. Short term contracts, ever rising rents and the possibility of being evicted at a moment’s notice has left a generation of Londoners being priced out of the city."

Acorn, along with homelessness groups like Shelter and Crisis, wants the government to make it harder for private landlords to evict renters by ending Section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions.

The groups also want the government to create a public national register of landlords, and limit landlords and estate agents to asking for one month's rent upfront.

Southwark Council runs a licensing scheme for private landlords on top of its statutory requirement to license landlords renting out homes to five or more people in at least two separate households.

‘Chaotic LTN junction’ brings fire engine to a halt

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Residents were maddened after seeing a fire engine attending an emergency jammed between parked cars leading up to the main Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) junction in Dulwich Village, even though the council was warned this might happen.

The fire crew were hurtling towards an incident in Eynella Road on 11 April, but are reported to have got trapped before reaching the junction because parked cars meant the road was too narrow.

The fire truck is then said to have performed an agonising three-point turn, taking a long-winded detour around Dulwich, arriving at its destination ten minutes late.

Last year, the London Ambulance Service (LAS) wrote to Southwark Highways saying “slight concern remains regarding lane width for large emergency vehicles”.

A spokesman for One Dulwich, a group of local residents and traders, said: “It exposes the madness of closing this vital junction – the only crossroads between the eastern and western halves of Dulwich Village.”

In a separate incident, on 31 March, an ambulance attending an emergency opted not to drive through the same junction because a lack of signage meant they were unaware they could drive through.

Last year, the LAS also wrote to the council urging them to “ensure the route

is clearly signed either by road signs or road markings that make it clear the route is open for emergency vehicles.”

A One Dulwich spokesman said: “It’s a mystery why they didn’t install the signs the London Ambulance Service asked for, or extend double yellow lines in Court Lane to avoid fire engines having to take detours.”

In October last year, an estimated 1,000 people converged on the main junction in Dulwich Village demanding the LTNs be removed after they were introduced in March 2020. This followed a consultation in which twothirds of people asked for the system to be scrapped.

A Southwark spokesperson said: “We have spoken to London Fire Brigade and they have confirmed that parked vehicles on Court Lane were the primary cause of the delay. Thankfully the small fire that they attended was extinguished with no injuries caused to anyone.

“We are currently introducing double yellow lines down both sides of Court Lane up to the first junction with Dekker Road. This will prevent parked cars from stopping further emergency vehicles.

“It is not common practice to sign access for emergency services in such circumstances and there is no provision for this type of sign in the national regulations on highway signage.

“However, we are monitoring the amended layout in real-time, and will be completing a post-construction road safety audit. This will inform any sign improvements that may be needed moving forwards.”

Robert Conna Crozier, 24, and of Aintree Road, Crawley, was sent to prison for 45 months after pleading guilty to to being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs, possession with intent to supply heroin and possession with intent to supply cocaine.

At London Waterloo station on December 16 2021, Crozier was spotted using a burner-style phone by plain clothes police officers at Waterloo on December 16 last year, The officers approached him and confirmed the phone was his before taking its details and allowing him to continue with his journey.

Detectives then launched an investigation into the phone's data and discovered broadcast messages being sent to a huge list of people offering drugs. The messages, sent on December 13 and 14 read “4 for 20 Levi” - the name of the drug line - and “new and better don’t miss out”.

Suspecting Crozier was selling drugs for the ‘Levi’ line, officers arrested him at home on Wednesday, March 9 this year.

They seized heroin, cocaine, cash, a burner-style phone and equipment used to cut and weigh drugs - and arrested Crozier.

In his interview he responded “no comment” to all questions put to him.

Detective Superintendent Gareth Williams said: “Our dedicated teams patrol the railway every day to intercept drug suppliers like Crozier, who use it to peddle their harmful commodities between locations.

Disabled mum trapped in top floor flat

herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A wheelchair bound woman has been left feeling suicidal because she feels trapped in her damp-ridden flat, despite begging the council to move her elsewhere.

Denise Saunders, 49, of Telfer House, Kingswood Estate, Dulwich, suffers from sciatica osteoarthritis, a degenerative condition that leaves her in constant pain.

She rarely leaves the house because, unable to use the stairs, she fears that if the lift breaks, she won't be able to get back into her home.

The mother-of-three also relies on her 21-year-old son to take her out because she is too weak to push herself

“I’m jealous of people coming and going. I can’t even walk. I walk around my house with a zimmer frame.”

She says if she was moved to a bottom floor flat “it would mean I wouldn’t have to rely on the lift. I’m scared that if I’m back and there’s a fire, I won’t be

able to get out.”

Denise says she was suspended from the bid system that allows tenants to apply for new housing in September 2021 because the council wanted to know about the status of her two adult children who live with her.

The News contacted the council to find out why Denise’s calls for help had gone unanswered. Denise says the council have since unsuspended her from the bid system.

She says she has also experienced severe damp throughout the twelve years she’s lived in the property, and at one point developed a leak from a decayed attic window which poured onto her bed for days.

“Leaks into her property’s bedrooms were connected to an issue with the roof, which unfortunately took longer than expected to resolve.

“We’re grateful for our resident’s patience and our repairs team has agreed dates with her to return this month to make good on the damage inside her home."

In total, Dorota Kowalska, 38, and friends David Pond, Nick Butler and Markus Butler, have crowdfunded over £45,000 to support Ukrainian refugees in Germany, Poland and Ukraine itself.

Dorota was inspired to begin raising money when her friend Julia was forced to flee across the Polish border from Stryi, Ukraine, a fifteen-kilometer journey that took six days. Dorota said: “I was talking to her every day during her wait on the border. Every morning I’d check on her progress.

“I’ll never forget her telling me she only dreamed of a shower and a bed on day five. I read this message as I was in bed myself and I couldn’t help feeling awfully guilty in a way.”

Heart-warming footage filmed at the Monastery of Nativity in Wlodzimierz, Volodymyr, Western Ukraine, showed the smiling children receiving their goodie bags of drawing paper, toys and treats.

Dorota initially aimed to raise £1000 to support her friend when she arrived in Poland but after smashing her target, she decided to keep going.

The £45,000 raised so far has been used to pay for vital humanitarian aid, food, medical supplies and six field kitchens, all of which is prepared in Poland and driven via car across the border.

Dorota has also organised a ‘Concert for Ukraine’ which will be held at The Huntsman and Hounds Pub, a community-led Walworth boozer.

Local band Blues Shaker will be playing groovy guitar music at the freeadmission event, with all proceeds going towards the fundraising efforts.

A Southwark university is screening a film that tells the story of a British journalist uncovering the truth about Holodomor, a famine in Soviet Ukraine that killed millions in the 1930s.

The May 5 screening is free and open to all, but London South Bank University (LSBU) is asking for donations for #HelpUkraine, the charity of the Ukrainian Association of Great Britain, which is working with Ukrainian charities to provide medicines, food and critical services to support the most vulnerable in Ukraine's ongoing war with Russia.

Mr Jones tells the story of Gareth Jones, a journalist from Wales who travelled to the Soviet Union in 1930s and was among the first to report the truth about the Holodomor. His account was not believed by the mainstream media.

He was later killed in Mongolia in 1935 - the BBC reported in 2012 that the NKVD, the Soviet secret police, may have been behind the murder. Mr Jones was awarded the Ukrainian Order of

Merit at a ceremony in Westminster Central Hall in 2008.

The Holodomor was devastating: estimates of the death toll range between 3.5 and 10 million.

Ukraine and fifteen other countries consider it an intentional, genocidal famine by the Soviet Union against the Ukrainian people. Others consider it a tragic side effect of the 'collectivisation' changes made to Soviet farming practices.

The screening of Mr Jones, which stars James Norton, Vanessa Kirby and Peter Sarsgaard, will be followed by a short discussion of the film and its themes.

Sir Simon Hughes, chancellor of LSBU, who helped organise the screening, said: "The timing of this event is incredibly timely and relevant.

The story of Gareth Jones shares a strong synergy with what is happening in Ukraine today".

Gareth Jones' great nephew Graham Colley who lived in Elephant & Castle for many years, was also among the organisers of the screening.

The event starts at 5.45 and will end by 9.15. The film itself will start at 6.05.

Officers were called to reports that a man had been assaulted by a group of men in Canterbury Lane shortly before 10pm on Saturday April 9.

The victim was found with a stab wound and then taken to the hospital where he was later discharged.

As a part of the investigation, officers then stopped two men who were travelling on a train through Ashford.

A knife was seized.

Troy Reid, 19, of Bellenden Road, Peckham and Ramone Thompson, 22, of Peckham Rye, have been charged with possession of a bladed article.

Reid faces an extra charge of possession of heroin and crack

cocaine with intent to supply.

Both men appeared before Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on Monday 11 April 2022 and were remanded in custody.

The case will next be heard at Canterbury Crown Court on Monday 9 May. Enquiries are ongoing and police are appealing for witnesses who saw the incident or have any information.

A spokesperson for Kent Police said: “Enquiries into the assault in Canterbury Lane are ongoing and officers are continuing to appeal to any witnesses who saw the incident, or anyone with information, to come forward.

Groundbreaking multi-variant Covid-19 vaccine to trial at King’s College Hospital

One of the world’s first Covid booster vaccines to target multiple variants will soon be trialled at King’s College Hospital.

Moderna is developing the vaccine because they say their standard Covid-19 booster offers declining protection against Omicron six months after it’s administered.

In the study, which launches on Tuesday 18 April, half of the volunteers will be given Moderna’s new multivariant booster and the other half given the UK-approved Moderna booster jab.

Dr James Galloway, consultant rheumatologist at King’s College Hospital, in Denmark Hill, Camberwell, said: “Vaccines continue to remain a key part of the UK’s defence against Covid. Their ability to reduce the risk of serious illness and death has been observed since the start of the roll-out in December 2020.

“This trial is perfectly timed as increasing evidence shows that vaccines which are effective against

multiple variants will be key to helping us to live with the virus.”

The first part of the study, led by St George’s, University of London, tested the efficacy of the Omicron-specific vaccine.

This second phase of the trial, made possible by a partnership between US biotechnology company Moderna Inc and the UK’s National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), will determine how effective the new multivariant vaccine is.

Professor Lucy Chappell, chief executive of the National Institute for Health Research, said: “The last two years have demonstrated the vital importance of international scientific collaboration, so it is truly exciting to see the NIHR and Moderna working with research teams across the UK on Moderna’s first major UK Covid vaccine study.

“With world-leading researchers, and the unique infrastructure and delivery expertise the NIHR provides, the UK is well-positioned to host exactly these sorts of significant, innovative projects in a post-pandemic world.”

Officers said the truck rammed into the police car at around 10:50am on Good Friday morning in Landor Road.

The officers were in a marked police car and indicated for the yellow and black Ford Transit tipper truck to stop because of the manner of the driving and damage

to the vehicle.

Instead of stopping, the truck reversed at speed into the bonnet of the police car, causing extensive damage.

One officer needed hospital treatment for injuries to his head and hand but has since been discharged. A second officer was assessed at the scene by paramedics.

Police looked for the truck at the time but could not find it for about three days.

The truck was found on Monday, April 18, in south London - detectives are not saying where for operational reasons - and has been seized for further examination.

Police are still pursuing all lines of enquiry to work out who was involved. Anyone with other information that could help police is asked to call 101 ref CAD 2376/15APR. Information can also be provided to Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Paul Harwood is one of nine other Londoners who have signed up to ‘Clipper: Round the world’, a race that sees normal people trained to compete in the sort of challenge normally reserved for olympians.

He is joined by fellow SouthLondoner, Danny Lee of Crystal Palace, who is racing all eight legs of the global route on board the Unicef team entry.

Luzon, Philippines to Seattle, USA, Paul Harewood said: “I have to say that this about the most difficult thing that I have ever done.”

“This is a racing boat and the work on board is physically and mentally demanding and the conditions are hard with sixteen people on board living in very close conditions – and often with the boat heeled over to 45 degrees.

“But the highlights are definitely worth it. We have gone from tropical heat to arctic cold, from storms in the Luzon Straits through a strange, becalmed fog filled with dragon flies off Taiwan, to racing a 30-knot tail wind and 10 metre waves in the North Pacific!

“There is nothing like surfing a 70foot boat down a 10-metre wave as

the sun gloriously rises over a grey sea at 45 degrees north as I did this morning (13 April)!”

So vast is the North Pacific that, at times, the crew’s closest humans have been the astronauts in the International Space Station, 248 miles above Earth’s surface.

‘Clipper: Round the World’ provides ordinary people – taxi drivers, doctors and nurses – with expert training and quality equipment before they embark on the trip.

Paul Harewood, who normally works in software, has completed Royal Yacht Association-approved training and the bespoke Clipper Race Advanced Safety Course certificate.

The race was cancelled in March 2020 when Covid-19 meant crews couldn’t dock at Chinese ports, but two years later, on the 24th March 2022, the teams set sail once again.

Manning ‘Dare to Lead’, a 70-foot racing yacht, Paul will soon land in Seattle before setting co-ordinates for Panama, Port Bermuda, New York, Derry, before a final sprint to London in August.

Back from the dead - covid SURVIVOR thanks nurses A man is celebrating his ‘second chance at life’ a year on from surviving Covid-19 in intensive care at St Thomas' hospital last Easter.

Mike Bainbridge, 45, tested positive for Covid-19 after losing his sense of taste and smell on Good Friday 2021.

South Londoner Mike said: “After a week of suffering from a temperature, feeling run down and not getting any better, my wife bought a pulse oximeter online and my oxygen levels measured 85 per cent which was far too low.

She called an ambulance and after a few tests, I was taken to A&E at St Thomas’ Hospital. That’s the last thing I really remember, until I woke up in intensive care a few days later.”

He was ventilated and put on life support to keep his brain and heart working for four days. He spent another five days recovering in the intensive care unit after coming off life support, and then another week in a general ward.

Mike said: “My memory is quite fuzzy of being in St Thomas’, but all of the staff were amazing. I owe them my life. What they do on a daily basis is incredible - such a selfless approach to caring for another person during a pandemic.”

Mike then returned home with his

wife, and took a couple of weeks off work to recuperate.

He said: “In a follow-up appointment last September, a scan of my lungs showed no lasting damage which was such a relief and I know I’m very fortunate. I was shown an x-ray taken of my lungs when I was admitted to hospital, and it looked like cotton wool as there were so many blood clots in my lungs.

“It took me a couple of months for my energy levels to return as I found walking around my flat tiring, whereas before I caught Covid-19, I enjoyed running and cycling. I slowly increased my fitness routine to build up my strength. In November I managed to complete a 5km run every day! I’m so incredibly grateful for all of the staff at St Thomas’ they’ve given me a second chance at life as things could have gone so very differently.”

Katie Susser, critical care recovery nurse lead at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said Mike's recovery had been "exceptional". She added that her team was "thrilled to hear how well Mike is doing."

"Knowing he has made a full recovery, and can spend this Easter with his family doing the things he loves, makes it worthwhile.”

The Queen’s favourite tree planted in the park

Southwark Council and two Bermondsey community groups commemorated the planting of a tulip tree over the Easter weekend to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee.

The council, the Southwark Park Association 1869 and Trees for Bermondsey chose the tulip tree because it is thought to be among the Queen’s favourites.

An informal gathering took place on Saturday, April 16, to celebrate the new tree, which is near Southwark Park galleries. A more formal event is planned for later in the year.

This was just the latest event in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe celebrating the Queen’s 70th anniversary. Former Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Sir Simon Hughes spoke at an event in February at the Jubilee Stone in King’s Stairs Gardens by the Thames.

The earlier event, also organised by the Southwark Park Association 1869, featured Southwark-based female Morris dance troupe New Esperance Morris.

TAKE three: Soap Box stars on the environment and Low traffic neighbourhoods Our unique Gogglebox-style coverage of the issues that affect residents in the run-up to the council elections on May 5th

In a Gogglebox-style show, we are filming how four Southwark households react to what local politicians say about three key areas: housing, crime and education, and transport and the environment.

We are focusing on one part of the borough - Newington, near Elephant

and Castle - which had the lowest voter turnout in the last elections in May 2018.

For the third and final episode on climate and the environment, Green Party candidate Clare Wood came back again, Labour’s candidate Natasha Ennin defended her party’s record, and the Liberal Democrats’ James Gurling was looking to roll back the years in the fight for his old seat in the ward.

The Conservative Party were invited to send one of their candidates, but yet again did not respond to our repeated requests to join in.

We then showed the candidates’ answers to four households from a range of backgrounds in the ward to get their reactions: Ola, a mother of four and a Brandon Estate council tenant, Paula, also on the Brandon, Kym from the Newington Estate and her partner Les, from the Brandon Estate and Neil and Emma, leaseholders in Oyster Court.

The focuses: low-traffic neighbourhoods, the council’s response to the climate emergency and the high level of fly-tipping in the borough.

Local elections are normally held every four years. The elections to choose new Southwark councillors will take place on May 5 this year. You vote by ward - the area which you live in - for whichever candidates you want to represent you. Depending on the ward, there are either two or three councillors to choose.

‘This is a free country: I’ll drive if I want to’ - says pensioner les

“We’re supposed to be a free country! But they’re going to tell you if you can have a car or you can’t have a car.”

Brandon Estate resident Les, 73, was reacting to the words of Clare Wood, a Green Party candidate in Newington ward where Les lives, who argued that people should be discouraged from owning cars as part of Southwark Council’s efforts to tackle the climate and environmental crisis.

One of the most controversial aspects of Southwark’s plan is the low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) - which block access to some streets for most vehicles.

The LTNs were brought in in 2020 as part of a London-wide effort to cut air pollution during the pandemic and free up space on our streets.

Critics argue that there was not enough consultation for these schemes, one of which is in Newington, and that the road closures mean more traffic on neighbouring streets - possibly driving up air pollution for the people who live there.

Les and his partner Kym, a Newington Estate resident, were taking part in the third episode episode of Southwark Soap Box, our project to boost awareness of some of the issues at stake in the local elections on May 5.

Focusing on Newington, located between Walworth, Kennington and Elephant and Castle, we have interviewed candidates for the elections on three

key topics: crime, housing, and the environment and transport - before showing the debates to four diverse households in the ward.

Green candidate Ms Wood said: “We do have to transition to - ideally - a car free society… 23 per cent of emissions in London come from domestic travel and we have to do something about it...

“We need to do something about parking that makes it a bit… trickier for people to own a car. Some people really need cars but if we find ways to facilitate the people who don’t really need them to transition out of them, then those people who do will find their journeys much more pleasant, apart from anything else.”

Some others in our focus group also disagreed with Ms Wood’s views about car ownership. Mother of four Ola, who also lives on the Brandon Estate, said: “They don’t live in my household with me to know the reason why I need a car.”

Emma, an Oyster Court leaseholder with her husband Neil, and who does not own a car, said people should not be told what to do by politicians. “You can’t tell people they need to transition now from having a car to not, because everyone can make their own free choice,” she said.

Natasha Ennin, a Labour candidate for the ward - where all three councillors are currently Labour - said that the point of the LTNs was to encourage people to think about walking or cycling journeys that are under two kilometres (about 1.2

Ms Wood, alongside Liberal Democrat James Gurling and Labour’s Natasha Ennin, took part in a debate on the environment before standing in Newington ward on May 5. We showed this debate - as well as discussions on housing, and crime and education - to four diverse households in the ward to get their reactions.

Ms Wood said that she didn’t think Labour was doing enough to tackle the climate crisis. “I joined the Green Party because I think we are in the middle of possibly the greatest crisis of the last 300 years - possibly.”

Laughing, Neil said: “I mean there’s been a lot of history in the last 300 years, I mean there’s been two world wars for a start. It’s not to diminish the whole issue or belittle it, or mock it… I’m not totally convinced by the green thing.”

The Green Party is not alone in criticising the Labour council’s response to the climate crisis. The Southwark branch of Extinction Rebellion said earlier this year that it does not understand how the council plans to reach its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Defending the council’s efforts, Labour’s Ms Ennin said at the debate: “We’ve reduced half of our carbon emissions,

“During the pandemic there were issues around health [and active travel] and obviously a key part of that was encouraging walking and cycling in response to the reduced bus capacity,” she said.

But Ola took issue with the idea that she could cycle around while managing her young family. “Sorry, not when I’ve got four children, how do I ride a bicycle with four kids! No thanks.”

As for walking, that also got short shrift from Ola: “Do you actually think I want to go shopping with them in hand without driving. No thank you. Unless [the council] wants to pay for my cab!”

Paula, who lives on the Brandon Estate with her adult daughter Kate, said that cycling was not for everyone. “ I cycle to work but… they cannot think that for all ages that will apply.

“Weather is another issue. Days like this, it’s glorious! But when it’s right in the middle of the winter, you may think twice, no matter what age you are.”

Kym, Les’ partner, who is struggling with a “busted” knee at the moment, put it plainly: “some people can’t walk”.

Is climate change really the greatest crisis in 300 years?

“There’s a war in Ukraine at the moment. I would imagine if your house has just got shelled then that’s an emergency, not what kind of facilities there are for electric cars in your area.”

James Gurling, who is seeking to reclaim his old position as a Liberal Democrat councillor in Newington, said that he supported the idea of cleaning up Southwark’s air - but the sudden imposition of LTNs in 2020 was “a shocking way to treat a local community.”

“The big problem behind this is the way this was all done, and the speed at which it was done, and the level of inclusiveness that came through some of these schemes… What needed to have happened was a better degree of consultation right at the start… some of that would have improved it, some of that would have explained the thinking behind it.”

Mr Gurling went on: “Involve people earlier, they’ll understand what’s happening, they’ll get with the programme, they’ll make it better!”

Speaking to Les, Kym said: “Kym: We wasn’t told about it, was we?” Les agreed that they didn’t hear anything. Kym went on: “Before it happened, we just went out there one day and ‘oh’”.

the funding the council got from mayor Sadiq Khan was dependent on bringing in LTNs quickly and that Covid-19 restrictions made consulting difficult.

Some 11,000 people have now been consulted across the borough, as well as about 130 businesses in Walworth.

But she admitted that the communication at the start of the process should have been more effective. “There should have been better consultation, but within the time restraints, it didn’t happen. There should have been a big push.”

Despite the criticism from some of our focus groups, Emma and Neil said they thought the Walworth LTN was “a good thing”. Emma said: “We definitely felt safer walking around with our children.”

Neil agreed that he felt safer but admitted the scheme was “annoying” for people with cars.

And Kym, for whom the LTN is “a pain” because of her injured knee, said she understands why it was brought in. “It’s good for some things.”

“The really major, immediate thing that residents are going to be facing is an enormous hike in energy bills,” she said.

Kym said: “That is really bad - the gas and the electric has gone sky high.”

Brandon Estate resident Paula puffed out her cheeks at the mention of energy bills, adding: “Electricity.. I can see that [has gone up]”.

Ms Wood added that the council could be bulk-buying solar panels on behalf of residents. But Brandon Estate resident Ola did not agree. “ Don’t bulk buy anything on my behalf, thank you! I prefer the company bill me direct and then we can go to the watchdog and sort it out, as opposed to the council doing anything for

Lib Dem James Gurling said that the climate crisis needs politicians from different parties to work togthether.

“My colleagues have put down motions that have been voted against locally about declaring a climate emergency, getting urgent action, getting things done more quickly,” he said.

Les, Kym’s partner, nodded in agreement. “If it’s a good idea, it’s going to work, then do it. Why should another party say ‘no, no, we don’t want you to do that’. It’s wrong.”

Last year Southwark was revealed as the eleventh-worst local authority for fly-tipping, at the same time as funding for street cleaning dropped and punishment for fly-tippers was low. The council says it ranks so highly because it logs all fly-tipping, not just incidents reported by the public.

Southwark is not unusual among London boroughs in charging for bulky waste. The council introduced the charge in 2015, and has brought in about £1.2m in revenue from this service in the six years since.

But both the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party say the charge should be scrapped to encourage people already struggling with the cost of living not to fly-tip.

“The bulk waste payment is probably more to do with this than anything else,” Lib Dem candidate James Gurling said as part of our Southwark Soap Box debate on the environment and climate.

“Abolish that fee and you will find that people begin to work much more fairly with the system.

“If fly-tipping is an issue you want to tackle, charging for its removal is not going to help, particularly as times get harder and people’s available cash gets lower.”

Newington Estate resident Kym agreed. “People are going… to continue to fly-tip because £25 is a lot of money, and you’ve got your gas and your

electric going up, food’s going up, everything’s going up.”

Green Party candidate Clare Wood said that the money the council currently puts into going after people who dump rubbish illegally should go into cleaning the streets and eliminating the bulky waste charge.

“I don’t think it’s worth the enforcement,” she said. “If we put that money into collection… we would start to eliminate the problem anyway.”

Labour’s Natasha Ennin defended her party’s record. She said getting rid of the charge would not stop people fly-tipping, as boroughs that take bulky waste for free also have dumping problems.

She added that the council has a 98 per cent record of removing rubbish dumped on the street within 24 hours.

Oyster Court leaseholder Neil was dubious. “That statistic doesn’t fit, just thinking about it roughly. I’m sure there’s stuff that’s there for a couple of days at least. Just walk round and open your eyes - it’s a mess. Really, it is. Walworth Road is a mess, it can be a mess down here.”

But Brandon Estate resident Paula said there was still fly-tipping in her area, but that things had got better recently. “It has improved, I’m not going to be telling you lies here. It has improved a lot in the last 24 months.”

Riots and bribery

– the elections of Victorian Southwark The Graphic Southwark Election 26 February 1870

Though many modern-day commentators hark back to an age when British politics was less hostile and more respectful, they are clearly unaware of the type of behaviour exhibited at the Victorian political hustings which occurred in Southwark, writes Neil Crossfield...

In November 1830, the Maidstone Journal & Kentish Advertiser reported on the Southwark Hustings, where Thomas Farncomb was competing against wealthy brewer, Charles Calvert, to become MP for Southwark. Farncomb and his supporters set out from the George Inn, led by a band of musicians and ‘accompanied by a shouting multitude.’ These supporters had been jeered by Calvert’s supporters on their way to the Town Hall. Quite soon after the speeches had been made, the supporters began throwing mud at their opponent’s

banners. Farncomb had the support of burly coal heavers on his side who soon gained the advantage and pushed their way through, taking control of the area in front of the hustings. Despite attempts by both candidates to calm the situation, the violence intensified, with the mob using cudgels and ‘throwing brickbats in whisps of straw’ to attack each other. Windows in nearby shops were smashed and many people were injured. The casualties were taken to Guys Hospital, and it is reported that at least one person may have died in the violence. Some sort of order was restored when constables at the incident drew their swords, but luckily, they did not use them. This was only eleven years after the infamous Peterloo Massacre in Manchester, so those involved in the rowdy behaviour would no doubt of been aware just how quickly it could be for disorder

like this to get out of hand.

Apart from the candidates, large numbers of journalists would be present on the hustings, reporting the events which would then be printed at great lengths in their newspapers. Using shorthand, they would note word for word what was said, even including when the crowd cheered or booed the speaker. It should be remembered that these large hustings were taking place before the introduction of amplification and loudspeakers, so the record taken by the journalist was often the only way people might find out what the speaker had said, such was the noise.

Family members and other supporters would often join the men on stage, bedecked in the colours of the political party their man was standing for. The Illustrated London News on 10 July 1852 printed sketches made of hustings

taking place at Lambeth, Greenwich and Southwark. A large hustings platform had been erected at the front of Southwark Town Hall on Borough High Street. The Morning Chronicle newspaper reported that nearby shops were closed, and people stood at open windows watching the proceedings. A crowd of up to 400 gathered in front of the town hall, whilst people passing by on omnibuses strained to hear what the candidates were saying.

In 1857, noted French novelist Alexandre Dumas was visiting England and wrote about his experiences visiting the Southwark Hustings that year.

Approaching the meeting in a carriage, he estimated that a crowd. some 4,000 people, had assembled in the street, making it necessary for him and his companions to push their way through the group. Being a distinguished writer of some fame, he

was invited up onto the husting structure to meet the candidates, where he was cordially greeted by all. The owner of a local glass factory, Mr Apsley Pellatt, was standing again after being unsuccessful in 1852. His opponents were the sitting MP, Admiral Sir Charles Napier, naval hero and the eventual winner, John Locke of the Liberal party. Dumas describes the abuse Pellatt received from the crowd when he addressed them, “he intended to speak, but the thunder of heaven would have struggled in vain against the human thunder from below.” Eventually giving up, Pellatt turned his back on the crowd and finished his speech to the journalists sitting on the hustings.

Earlier that day he had attended the hustings at the Guildhall and had remarked on the silence and order of the crowd there, “that was on account of their new

Illustrated London News Hustings Southwark 10 July 1852 law on bribery, for it is not even any longer allowed to make the electors drunk.” He was referring here to the 1854 Corrupt Practices Act. Bribery and corruption had been rife in the British electoral system, with candidates trying to elicit support either by paying people to vote for them or by plying them with free food and alcohol.

The West Kent Guardian writing in 1854 about the government’s attempt to counter election corruption noted that “Barclay and Perkins, Truman, Hanbury and Co exercise a magic influence upon the state of political parties.” While not all bribes were so overt, candidates could influence voters by spending huge amounts of money in a campaign: engaging local tradesmen to produce banners and ribbons, employing canvassers and agents. Even payment for the construction of the husting platform might ensure a vote from the grateful builder. Large donations to local charities could be made and some wealthy MPs even built hospitals or libraries. Laws may have curtailed bribery, but people always seem to find a way to get around them.

In 1880 Reynold’s Newspaper reported that Mr E Clark had been returned as MP for Southwark and it was widely known that many of his supporters had received copious amounts of free liquor in local pubs, with the landlords conveniently ‘forgetting’ to ask for payment to circumvent any accusation of bribery.

While a desire for public service and political change were necessary attributes for prospective MPs, deep pockets were an even more vital quality.

Though attempts had been made to civilise these events, candidates would continue to use underhand methods to

disrupt their opponents. In 1868 the Hustings at Southwark were attended by a crowd of over 3,000 people. Newspapers reported that the Conservative candidate, Alderman Cotton, had engaged the services of workmen who had been placed in vans next to the stage. When the Liberal candidate, Locke, began to speak, the men jeered loudly drowning out his words.

Though he denied he had paid these men, his protestations of innocence were put in doubt when the men started producing banners supporting Cotton. The police were eventually summoned to pull the vans away.

The role the Hustings had previously played in the electoral process was diminished on the introduction of the Secret Ballot Act of 1872. As we have seen, electoral candidates would often be local businessmen or landlords and a person who was seen to be voting against their employer or landlord risked the chance of being dismissed or evicted from their home. Malpractice was common and unscrupulous candidates were sometimes known to employ ‘heavies’ to circulate within the crowd at hustings to make sure that people voted for the ‘correct’ person.

The 1872 Act saw the introduction of the polling booth meaning that voters could choose freely without fear of intimidation as their vote would now be secret. The Hustings did not totally disappear but evolved into an arena where constituents could come face to face with those standing for office. While we are now familiar with the concept of the televised leaders debates during election, few now remember that the origin of these can be found in the Hustings.

The history of hustings, where even dead cats were thrown at candidates On 5th May 2022, local elections are scheduled to take place throughout the United Kingdom.

All 32 London boroughs, including Southwark, will vote to decide who will hold political power for the next few years.

In the period leading up to the election, many residents can expect to receive leaflets from the various political parties through their letterboxes or they may even be fortunate enough (or unfortunate depending on their views!) to have one of the candidates knocking on their front door, canvassing for their support.

We can expect to see party political broadcasts on our TV sets and no doubt our social media feeds will be full of promotional material put out by the assorted parties. Yet these forms of canvassing are relatively recent.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, one of the most popular ways in which prospective candidates would try and gather support was by appearing at a large public meeting called a Hustings.

Originally developed from the Old English word hūsting or the Old Norse hūsþing, its literal translation is "house thing" or “house assembly”. These

were judicial assemblies where AngloSaxon kings and their follower’s held council and resolved civil disputes.

As the British political system evolved, Hustings became a vital part of the democratic process, becoming the place where candidates would have to face the electorate. Before the great electoral reforms which took place in the 19th century, politicians were largely drawn from the wealthy or aristocratic classes, who generally had little interaction with the public.

However, as the franchise expanded, rival candidates were required to attend nomination hustings as part of the election procedure. Once they had been through a formal process of nomination and had delivered a speech to the crowd, a vote by show of hands was taken. The losing party would then request a formal poll to be taken, in which only those on the registered list of voters could participate. Prior to the later reform acts, only a relatively small number of adult men were enfranchised and consequently many of the people present at the husting would not be eligible to vote. Despite this, the hustings allowed the public to indicate their support for candidates.

The term hustings also referred to

the raised platform from which the candidates could speak to the crowd.

Large numbers of people would gather at these public meetings, meaning that the hustings had to be substantial structures to elevate the candidates above the masses.

The hustings were a chance for constituents to observe, challenge and size up the candidates. They could be riotous, raucous affairs, often leading to outbreaks of violence. Heckling was commonplace and displeasure was shown by the throwing of cabbage stalks, rotten eggs and even on occasion, dead cats. In an age where the general population had little opportunity to interact with their political masters, the hustings provided a chance for some form of political levelling. A candidate, whatever his social rank would have to face the mob. It became a rite of passage for British politicians whose mettle would be tested facing the crowds. They were expected to deal with the ’rough music’ and abuse with grace and good humour. Those who couldn’t deal with the rough and tumble of the hustings would no doubt have found the adversarial atmosphere of the House of Commons difficult.

What if Trump returned

Trump doesn’t want to go up against Biden, so, ever the man for misinformation, whispers in Biden’s ear that he has dirt on his wife Jill, causing Joe to drop out and put up VP Harris as the best person to carry the Democrat baton.

The QAnon Shaman from the Capitol riots is quite prominent in the second half, set up by Bartlett to be the face of

everything and everyone that would ruin Trump’s attempts to be President once more. Alas, Trump doesn’t see that straightaway and encourages the troublemakers to continue their civil unrest. Eventually, his own children turn on him once he is jailed: ‘We were just ornaments for him to look at,’ they say of their upbringing.

Bertie Carvel is brilliant as Trump and The 47th seems rather dull when he is

not on stage. And that is the problem in reality - Trump attracts, he is very watchable and quite mesmerising; Americans need a showboating Trump.

The 47th shows him as an evil genius, but dangerous when in power as he appears to have no realisation of how saying things for effect will affect millions of people. The comedy hides Trump’s madness while highlighting the insanity of those that voted for

Donald Trump has lost and been impeached; Joe Biden hasn’t got the heart to fight for a second term, and his Vice-President Kamala Harris is left to take on the Trump Klan. It makes for an interesting and often hilarious piece of drama.

The play opens with Trump entering on a golf buggy for an easy shot on the green. He misses and the ball rolls downhill and off the stage, so there’s the first metaphor right there.

We find Biden in the White House and Trump still bleating to anyone who will listen that he was robbed of the top job - and millions believe him, even though he gets impeached twice. Then, in a Succession-type scene, he has his three children pitch for his backing, and the prize is that the winner will be put forward as a potential presidential candidate so that there is a Trump in the Oval Office once again.

Meanwhile, on Ted Cruz’s campaign trail, Trump is enjoying all the adulation again. At a rally he is asked if he will stick to the rules set up after his presidency ended in a torrent of false claims and lies, plus a riot in the Capitol; he declares that this time there will be no rules!

At times The 47th is no different from a redneck rally, with clapping, whooping, and cheering the antiTrump points made on the stage rather than for a show-stopping musical number. Thankfully, from where I was seated, the few Trump supporters near me (in a minuscule minority) kept their

him. But within the lunacy and the humour Bartlett has created a world that could quite possibly become true; the arguments still rage on about whether Trump is/ was good or bad for the US. Both Simon Williams as Biden and Carvel in the Trump role have nailed the walks of their characters, and Donald’s wig should be in line for an Olivier, too, but if one thing lets it down for me it is the Shakespearean blank verse that makes me want to switch off as soon as I detect its sleep-inducing rhythms. Yes, the play references several Shakespeare plays, but forsooth and FFS, I see no need for it here.

The stage has a ring of light hovering above which could signify the Oval Office or a halo for America’s chosen Messiah. It is, though, quite obvious which way the author thinks about Trump.

Art for the NFT Generation In recent years there has been a wind of change blowing through the art world which began as a soft breeze but turned into a raging storm of debate. The cause of this upheaval is the rise of the nonfungible token (NFT) and there are many who believe that this is the future, writes Michael Holland...

Evan Januz will soon be opening the Shoreditch NFT Gallery, one of the first of its kind in the country and was keen to tell the News about the gallery’s first exhibition, as well as throw some light on the confusion surrounding NFTs. Evan has been in and around art for most of his working life. His interest began when, at a young age, he first bought artworks. An early purchase in a charity shop sold at auction for £7,000, which gave him a good start to invest in more.

With the help of artist friends to guide him, Evan’s knowledge grew and he was soon buying pieces that steadily went up in value - A good reason to turn a hobby into something more. He now has an extensive collection of art.

I asked Evan to explain NFTs: ‘The

art world is pushing in to a digital generation, so rather than have a physical artwork you have a digitalised piece… The art world is keeping up with the marketplace, with what’s going on now.’

The gallerist went on to tell how you buy a stake in the painting so that as its value rises so does your stake. Of course, like any investment, there are ups and downs, so you need to know what you’re doing or ensure that you only spend an amount of money that will not put you into financial trouble if the investment does not immediately show a profit.

Shoreditch NFT Gallery will not be selling off thousands of NFTs for each original painting as some NFT galleries do, but are keeping the numbers low, like a limited edition print: ‘We’re only releasing ten NFTs for each picture,’ he promises.

And to keep abreast of the zeitgeist the gallery will offset its carbon footprint by putting something back from each sale in the form of a donation to projects in developing countries. ‘The first set-up I have is with the government of St Lucia,’ begins Evan, ‘which will be a sports academy, plus providing iPads and

sports equipment for schools there.’

Locally, the gallery plans to set up art classes with a professional artist for young people in the community and also to work with surrounding schools.

Evan explains: ‘We’d like the schools to hold art competitions, with the winning artworks going into an exhibition at the gallery, and being made into NFTs.’ One of Evan’s favourite artists is Ricardo Cinalli, a legendary Argentinean artist who has lived locally in Spitalfields for many years while exhibiting worldwide; his publicly commissioned frescoes and artworks can be seen all over the UK. The iconic art reviewer Brian Sewell once said that ‘Ricardo Cinalli is this generation’s new Master’.

Cinalli will be the gallery’s first exhibiting artist, and later in the year he will present a full set of all Picasso’s triptychs that he has painted so that they can, for once, be shown together.

We have tried to get all parties to debate in the run up to the local elections - disappointingly the Conservatives have been absent so far

ocal elections are looming but it is hard not to be distracted by all the shenanigans going on in government - on top of party-gate we have an announcement last week, while parliament was in recess, of plans to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.

During the bank holiday weekend we took to the streets of Dulwich Village to ask residents there what they thought. It is perhaps the only place in Southwark that could elect and indeed has had Conservative councillors in the past.

Of course not everyone we stopped was a Tory voter, but we are finding it increasingly difficult to get the local Conservative Party to engage. Despite months of requests not one Conservative candidate from Newington ward or even Conservative candidates from other wards in Southwark have taken part in the three debates we have held to encourage people to go out and vote on May 5th.

It is clear what the Labour Party, Liberal Democrats and the Green Party think of the Rwanda asylum plan and even more obvious what they think of the Prime Minister and others having parties in Downing Street while the rest of the country was abiding by lockdown rules they set.

If grassroots Conservatives are against it we are not hearing this at a local level, indeed the way in which Parliament and the Conservative Party is structured means that despite numerous calls for Boris Johnson to resign only his own MPs can currently make that happen.

Prominent MPs have spoken out against Party-gate but the 54 are needed to write to the 1922 Committee to force a leadership race – this has not happened.

On Rwanda our sample vox pop showed there is little support for it and indeed even the former prime Minister Theresa May, who is widely known for devising the “hostile environment” policy at the Home Office, this week questioned the “legality, practicality and efficacy” of the plan.

This paper is not here to tell people how to vote in this local election or indeed in any election, but we have to make it clear when we have not had representatives from a party engaging.

The best test of what the electorate think is the election result itself and so in Southwark and elsewhere we will see whether scandals at Number 10 and controversial policies will impact the Conservative Party vote after May 5th.

Next week, just one week before people take to the polls, we will endeavour to interview all the local party leaders in Southwark - let’s just hope they all take part.

Barker, who had hit Jacks’ off spin straight for successive sixes to complete his half-century in some style, initially drove Overton powerfully past mid-off for four. Overton’s first ball to Abbott, the new batsman, was an even nastier bouncer which the tailender did well to avoid. The next, the last ball of the over, was fended meekly to short leg as Abbott departed for a duck.

Fuller, who had also greeted Overton’s introduction by uppercutting and then offdriving him for boundaries, was yorked by the first ball of Overton’s next over. He had made 41 from 48 balls, with six fours, while Barker’s equally punchy 57 took him only 68 balls, with two sixes and nine fours.

“James Taylor also performed brilliantly for a 21-year-old and it is particularly good for all the players who have worked extremely hard over the winter months, preparing for this season, to begin to see the fruits of that work. We have a very tight group here, a lot of boys who have come through our system and, with Kemar Roach getting injured early in Hampshire’s first innings, the four main bowlers who were left really stuck to their task throughout the last two days.

“There are a lot of sore bodies in the dressing room but it’s good to show everyone we can win tough. Then again, it’s early days so we won’t get carried away.”

Hampshire 1st XI manager Adrian Birrell added: “We were outplayed in this game right from the start. They got an above par score in their first innings, we were then under pressure and it showed.”

Stans round off season in style

STANSFELD’S OUTSTANDING SCEFL First Division winners were given a guard of honour by opponents Meridian and ended their season in style with a 1-0 win at Foxbury Avenue on Easter Monday.

Ollie Milton scored his thirteenth goal of the season in the last minute in front of an attendance of 120 as the Stans reached Step 5 of the English football pyramid for the first time in their 125-year history.

Stansfeld were never lower than second place in the table all season and put together two twelve-game unbeaten runs. They finished on 87

points, eleven points ahead of Sutton Athletic.

They join Fisher in the Premier League next season.

Luzolo opened the scoring in the 20th minute and added two more in the 40th and 44th minutes.

Isaac Thompson’s penalty extended the lead to 4-0 on 58 minutes before Luzolo got his fourth two minutes later.

It was a treat for the 32 travelling Fish fans at the final away game of the season against already-relegated Hamlets.

They are fittingly back at St Paul’s to finish the campaign.

The Fish – who can’t finish higher than thirteenth but will be aiming to protect that place from Punjab and Welling Town behind them – take on K Sports in Rotherhithe, with the kick-off at 3pm.

Overton leads Surrey rout

All-rounder Jordan Clark’s 4 for 55 completed his own fine match with the ball in Surrey’s first win of the LV= Insurance County Championship season, while 21year old rookie seamer James Taylor also impressed with 3 for 56 as Hampshire slid to 227 all out second time around after being dismissed for 223 in their first innings and being asked to follow on.

Former Somerset fast bowler Overton, who joined Surrey late in the 2020 season, more than made up for the absence of West Indies Test quick Kemar Roach – who suffered a hamstring injury on day two – by grabbing the mantle of attack spearhead with match figures of 8 for 107.

Hampshire, who started the third day still 315 runs adrift at 152 for 7, kept their first innings alive for just over an hour before Overton finished it off with a dramatic burst of three wickets in four balls to claim 5 for 54.

Overton then added another 3 for 53 and although opener Joe Weatherley made a composed 87 and James Vince 57, Hampshire were dismissed with 15.2 day three overs remaining. Clark clean bowled both James Fuller, for 12, and Kyle Abbott, whose third-ball 0 was his second duck of the day, in the same over and soon afterwards wrapped things up by having last man Mohammad Abbas caught at second slip for 0. Ben Brown was left 30 not out.

Weatherley and Vince added exactly 100 for the third wicket but Overton parted them and then Taylor struck a significant blow by having Vince caught down the legside by keeper Ben Foakes seven balls before tea.

In the final session, Overton, with his short ball a real weapon on an easy-paced surface, had Felix Organ acrobatically caught by Will Jacks at gully for 5 and Taylor quickly followed that by having Keith Barker leg-before for 5 as Hampshire’s last real resistance was broken.

For much of the day’s opening hour, though, it looked like being tough going for Surrey with Fuller being badly dropped on 15 by Ollie Pope at second slip off Clark in the day’s second full over. Fuller and Barker then played with great freedom to take their eighth wicket partnership, on 20 overnight, to 90 in just 17 overs before Overton produced his dramatic triple-

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET look set to miss out on a place in the playoffs despite an injury-time Danny Mills goal securing a point against Tonbridge Angels at Champion Hill on Easter Monday.

With just four games left this season, and sides around them having fixtures in hand, Gavin Rose’s team had to win against the visitors, who are in the bottom half of the table with little left to play for.

But instead of racing out of the blocks in their attempt to cut the gap to the play-offs with a win, Dulwich produced a poor first half and were a goal down at the break.

Ibrahim Olutade gave Angels the lead before the hosts fought back and eventually equalised through Mills.

Dulwich are tenth in the National League South table, four points off the play-offs with three games left, but all the teams around them, including Havant & Waterlooville in seventh, have a game in hand.

Rose recalled strikers Mills and Chike Kandi for defenders Sanchez Ming and Tyrone Sterling which meant rejigging the set-up.

But despite those extra attackers, the home supporters in East Dulwich were given little to cheer in the opening 45 minutes.

Gio McGregor fired a free-kick over in the tenth minute and Doug Loft was off-target at the other end, the only real moments of threat from either side in the first half an hour.

Tonbridge went ahead in the 36th minute when Aaron Smith-Joseph showed good control to race to the

The Hamlet were more proactive after the break as they tried to prevent their promotion hopes fading further. Dulwich almost gifted the visitors a second in the 54th minute when Michael Timlin’s mis-placed pass sent Olutade through on goal but Grainger rescued his side.

The dangerous Olutade then got between Jack Holland and Ronnie Vint and was brought down by the latter, the inevitable red card following for the Dulwich defender.

Jordan Green tried to respond and was just off-target after turning and shooting from 20 yards.

Joe Turner headed over from Tom Beere’s corner and then Grainger denied the former as the away side pushed for a second against the depleted hosts.

With 21 minutes left, Henly kept his side in front when he tipped over Quade Taylor’s header from

McGregor’s free-kick.

Olutade headed over the crossbar from Ricky Modeste’s cross before Dulwich went down the other end and Green’s shot was blocked by Beere.

The flow of the game was disrupted by substitutions but Dulwich increased the pressure on their opponents by forcing a number of corners.

Kandi got free to cross for Mills whose header went over but Tonbridge were a threat on the break and Grainger saved from Beere to keep his side within touching distance.

Kandi and Mills combined again and this time the striker hit the target but Henly saved.

Just as the board went up to show five minutes of added-time, it was third time lucky for the Kandi-Mills routine as the latter headed a deep cross from the left past Henly.

With Dulwich pushing for an unlikely winner, Kandi was robbed of the ball just inside his own half to give Angels substitute James Taylor a chance, but he shot wide of the far post with Grainger struggling.

Dulwich travel to Chippenham Town this Saturday when anything other than a win could end their play-off hopes. Chippenham are a point and two places ahead of the Hamlet in eighth.

Oli open to opportunity Sheffield United attacker could be playing for move away EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk OLIVER BURKE has admitted it would be “amazing” if an opportunity came up to join Millwall permanently in the summer.

Burke, 25, is on loan with the Lions from play-off rivals Sheffield United until the end of the season.

Scotland international Burke, who has been transferred for fees of almost £30million in his career, has started only sixteen league games for the Blades in a season-and-a-half following his move from West Brom in a swap deal with Callum Robinson in the summer of 2020.

Burke scored his first goal of the season in the Lions’ 4-1 over Barnsley at The Den and says he feels “settled” at the club.

Burke is one of five players on loan at Millwall this season and four of them could be considered a success, the exception so far being Luke Freeman purely because he hasn’t featured due to injury.

Two of the others, Benik Afobe and Sheyi Ojo, are set to be available for permanent transfers away from Stoke and

Liverpool in the summer and would interest Millwall.

It remains to be seen what Arsenal have planned for Daniel Ballard but Lions boss Gary Rowett told the News recently he would be interested in another deal for the defender.

That would most likely be another loan.

Burke missed more than a month through injury after joining in January but is set to be an important player in the run-in and knows he is playing for his future.

“It was a tough one with my injury, that was never going to help. But now I’m back making a bit of an impact,” Burke said.

“I haven’t had the game-time I would have liked at Sheffield United. It’s not really gone as planned.

“I think we just have to see what happens. I can’t really say too much at this point.

“I just have to do my very best on this loan at Millwall and if something comes up here, then amazing.

“I’m really enjoying my time here, I feel like I have settled in really well with my team-mates, they’re a great bunch of boys here.

“I feel good here but we’ll have to see what happens, you know what football can be like. We’ll

see.”

Millwall are a point off sixth going into the last three games of the season.

Burke is embracing the challenge.

“When you’re confident and games are coming thick and fast you just go with the flow of it and hope you keep that winning mentality,” he said.

“I obviously know it’s difficult in this league. You could go on a crazy run and then you could go on a crazy losing streak as well.

It’s kind of weird, really.

“It’s going to be tough but we’re ready to go and more of the squad is back fit and fighting for a place. It’s great.”

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has exuded calm in the run-in and the squad are also not getting carried away with plenty of hard work left to do to make the play-offs.

Burke added: “It’s always good to have a calm head in these sorts of circumstances.

We know we have to perform and almost have to think of it that it’s a massive opportunity to do something great. So why not go for it?

“Never say never but at the same time be calm about it and keep doing what we’re doing, not slip away from it or get too excited.”

Murray Wallace scored an own goal to give the hosts the lead but then atoned for that by heading home Jed Wallace’s delivery to make it 1-1.

Gary Rowett’s Lions had chances to win it in the second half but will have reflected a draw was probably a fair result in a game where both teams had good opportunities in front of goal.

Brad Potts had an early effort blocked before Murray Wallace could only turn Daniel Johnson’s cross past Bartosz Bialkowski in the sixth minute.

Bialkowski saved comfortably from Sean Maguire in the eleventh minute and then Billy Mitchell had an effort at the other end two minutes later but shot wide.

The Lions levelled in 21 minutes in as Murray brilliantly powered Jed’s cross past Daniel Iversen and into the top corner for his sixth goal of the season.

Greg Cunningham fired over in the 26th minute and the Lilywhites then lost captain Alan Browne to injury three minutes later, Ali McCann coming on.

Daniel Ballard just failed to reach Jake Cooper’s flick-on four minutes before the break. Cooper was then required in his own box in the 44th minute to deny Maguire.

The Lions could have taken the lead in the 54th minute but after a chaotic sequence in the Preston penalty area when Benik Afobe, Jed Wallace and Danny McNamara all had attempts blocked, Iversen kept out Maikel Kieftenbeld’s shot towards the top corner.

Ireland international Maguire threatened again four minutes later as he went through one-on-one only for

Bialkowski to pull off a brilliant save.

The sides traded chances after an hour as Andrew Hughes’s shot from 30 yards and Scott Malone’s halfvolley didn’t trouble Bialkowski or Iversen.

Mitchell blocked Johnson’s shot and Bialkowski saved comfortably from Potts to keep it level.

Potts was replaced by Josh Murphy who was quickly into the action with a curling shot that Bialkowski tipped around the post.

Millwall manager Rowett injected fresh energy into the side when Tom Bradshaw came on for Oliver Burke in the 72nd minute and George Saville for Mitchell two minutes later.

In between those changes, Cooper headed a corner wide.

Iversen was equal to Afobe’s shot

from Jed Wallace’s pass with nine minutes left and a minute later Bradshaw set up Saville whose attempt was blocked by McCann.

Bradshaw tried to force the second with two minutes left but Iversen again came to the home side’s rescue, before Bradshaw headed over from the corner.

Two second-half goals in four minutes from Scott Malone and Tom Bradshaw were enough to secure three points for the Lions despite a nervous end to the game after Tom Eaves pulled one back for the visitors.

With fellow play-off chasers Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers and Coventry City all dropping points, Millwall climbed to seventh in the table, just one point behind the Blades in sixth.

There was discernible tension at an expectant Den throughout a first half that offered little entertainment.

Alfie Jones went closest for the visitors when the centre-back found himself in the penalty area, but his low left-footed attempt was well kept out by Bartosz Bialkowski.

Tyler Burey – starting in place of the injured Jed Wallace – almost capitalised on a poor Callum Elder back-pass in the seventeenth minute. The youngster beat City goalkeeper Nathan Baxter to the ball but couldn’t get it under control before Elder recovered to head clear.

Malone had the Lions’ best chance of the half five minutes before the break as he tried to cushion Bradshaw’s headed knock-down into the bottom-right corner, but Baxter stretched to tip the effort around the post.

Millwall struggled to create in the first half against an organised Hull City side who were unbeaten in six on the road, occasionally lacking a cutting edge in the final third.

The absence of talisman Wallace would have had the home crowd concerned that their side could struggle to break down the Tigers.

However, after strong words from Rowett at half-time, the Lions came racing out the blocks, with Benik Afobe drawing a save from Baxter within two minutes of the restart.

City replied minutes later and after Keane Lewis-Potter’s effort from a corner rebounded off the post, Bialkowski was on hand to superbly deny Jones on the line from close range.

That save would prove vital when the Lions took the lead a minute later. Burey drove down the left flank, taking on two Hull City defenders before his cut-back was dummied by Billy Mitchell on the edge of the box for Malone.

to have ended the move, but Richard Smallwood’s attempted clearance ricocheted off the wing-back and nestled in the bottom-left corner past Baxter on 51 minutes.

Just four minutes later, the Lions doubled their lead through the returning Bradshaw.

The striker was put through on goal by Afobe who cleverly headed on a Daniel Ballard clearance and the Welshman made no mistake with his curled finish to score his ninth of the season.

The visitors had on-loan Chelsea goalkeeper Baxter to thank for keeping the score at 2-0. The stopper made a string of saves throughout the second half.

He was down low to deny Murray Wallace his second goal of the week from a Danny McNamara cross, as well as keeping out Jake Cooper’s header from a corner and a deflected effort from substitute Oliver Burke.

Substitute Eaves gave his side a lifeline in the 87th minute after Lewis-Potter’s scuffed effort came to him on the corner of the six-yard box. The towering forward finished convincingly from close range to make the final few minutes of the game uncomfortable for the home side.

Jed Wallace could miss the remaining fixtures, but Rowett will take solace in the performances of his other attackers against Hull.

The front three struggled in the first half against a stubborn back five, but each played their part in a dominant second 45.

Burey took the game by the scruff of the neck and tormented the City defenders down the left flank of the attack. The 21-year-old’s confidence and energy could make him a key player in the runin. Meanwhile, Bradshaw and Afobe displayed their impressive link-up as they started together for the first time in three games.

Millwall moved up three places in the league after Monday’s results. They still need a couple of favours – but they are fulfilling their end of the bargain at the moment.

Lions can’t slip up as they try to keep pressure on top six EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JAKE COOPER hailed “a massive three points” against Hull City on Monday – and praised the attack in the absence of the “magnificent” Jed Wallace.

Scott Malone and Tom Bradshaw scored to put the Lions 2-0 ahead early in the second half and they had chances to extend their lead, including when Tyler Burey hit the crossbar.

Tom Eaves scored with three minutes left to make it a nerve-jangling finale.

But Millwall saw the game out to move level with sixth-place Sheffield United, who then went one point ahead of the Lions after drawing 1-1 at Bristol City later on Monday.

Shota Arveladze’s Hull, who had nothing tangible to play for after their 2-1 win over Steve Morison’s Cardiff on Good Friday guaranteed their Championship survival, were tricky opponents. Bartosz Bialkowski had to produce two excellent stops either side of the break to keep the scores level before the hosts pounced for two goals in four minutes.

Cooper knew there was big pressure on the Lions to get a result as any mis-step now could effectively end their top-six challenge.

“It’s really important to get the first goal in these games at this stage of the

season,” Cooper told the News. “Can we score first? And then can we take the game away from the opposition?

“Teams like Hull haven’t got anything to play for so the first goal is vital. We got it today, got a second and should have taken the game away from them.

“But we defended really well in the end and it’s a massive three points.”

Hull were almost in twice and Bialkowski had to be at his best to keep them out.

Cooper explained what boss Gary Rowett explained they had to do differently in the second half.

“They made it difficult, they gave us a bit more space around the back and closed up areas for our attacking players,” Cooper said.

“We had to change that up a bit, second half we played it forward a bit earlier, got the ball into those areas and started winning second balls in midfield. Sav [George Saville] and Billy [Mitchell] were all over their midfield in the second half and that made a massive difference for us. “[Rowett] just said about lifting energy, playing forward earlier, not getting bogged down playing side to side too often.

“It was just about that end product and can we produce that moment of quality to get us that first goal.”

Burey appeared undaunted at being asked to step into the role of Wallace, who has arguably been Millwall’s best player

for three seasons but who missed out through injury.

Burey helped set up Millwall’s first goal when he beat two defenders on the left before playing a pass towards Billy Mitchell on the edge of the box.

Mitchell let the ball run through his legs for Malone who mis-controlled with his right foot before sticking out his left to try to block the clearance from Richie Smallwood, only to see the ball rifle into the bottom-left corner from 20 yards.

Benik Afobe’s clever header set up Bradshaw for a brilliant finish for his ninth goal in his last seventeen games.

Both Burey and Bradshaw had been recalled to the starting XI. “Jed’s been magnificent so it’s a huge loss to have him out. But we’ve got depth in our squad now, we’ve got players chomping at the bit,” Cooper said.

“It was great to see them involved and they got their chance. It was up to them to go and take it and I think it was a massive win for the club and they did themselves proud out there.

“You’ve seen Benik and Bradders chipping in with big goals throughout the season, so their partnership is key. If they keep scoring goals for us can we then chip in from around the pitch?

“Scotty’s scored today, Dann Mac’s got a couple of goals [against Barnsley]. I think there are goals in the whole team, Muzza [Murray Wallace], myself, can we just produce them on the day when it matters and keep them out the other end?”

Malone has scored some outstanding goals for Millwall but this was probably the luckiest of his career. Cooper was jokingly asked where it ranks in the wingback’s repertoire.

“That’s bottom of the pile, surely!” he replied. “It was very unintentional, but you’ve got to earn that bit of luck. He was in the right area and it was brilliant to see that ball fly into the net, to be honest.

“That’s the difference. At Luton it gets a deflection and comes off me and goes in our goal. Today it’s a rebound off Scotty’s foot and into their net. It was perfect for us to go and win the game.”

If Cooper plays this weekend against Birmingham it will be his 250th appearance for the club.

His leadership is crucial and when Shaun Hutchinson and Alex Pearce don’t start he wears the captain’s armband.

It’s an honour he said he is “proud of”.

“It’s been an up-and-down season but I’ve really enjoyed it,” Cooper said.

“It’s been a really enjoyable time since I’ve come back into the team. Hopefully I can just keep producing for the rest of the season now.

“Obviously Pearcey hasn’t been in the squad as much recently so I want to take some responsibility.

“Hutchy has come back in so we work around with a good leadership team.

We’ve got Muzza, Billy, myself, Hutchy, it’s good. I enjoy it.

“It’s great to have the armband, a pleasure – I’m proud of it.”

Supporters ‘integral’ as club has to request extra tickets for Blues clash EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT said Lions supporters are “integral” to the club’s promotion push – as Millwall had to request more tickets for this Saturday’s game at Birmingham City after the initial allocation sold out.

Millwall were given 1,487 tickets for away fans and they were quickly snapped up as demand and excitement build with three games left.

The club confirmed on Tuesday that Blues had agreed to their request for an extended allocation.

Despite major train and road disruption

on Good Friday, 664 tickets were sold for the 1-1 draw against Preston North End at Deepdale.

Supporters then saw their team defeat Hull City 2-1 at The Den on Monday, a result that briefly put the Lions top of the table of home results this season, above Blackburn in second. That was before Fulham defeated Preston 3-0 at Craven Cottage on Tuesday night to seal promotion to the Premier League. The Cottagers now top the home and away standings.

Millwall are one point off sixth-place Sheffield United.

“Our fans are an integral part of us trying to achieve something,” Rowett said. “They’ve got behind the team at home, we’ve seen that.

“Our home record as it currently stands [before the Fulham game] is the best in the division. Our away form, we need those big days. When you look at the likes of Sheffield United this season and our fans were there in full voice it really, really helps the team.

“It will be important. Hopefully they are excited and that’s the main bit, they’ve got something to be excited about because the team have worked so hard.

“Let’s see what happens.”

This time last season, Millwall were five points off sixth with no realistic chance of reaching the play-offs.

Rowett was asked if one of a manager’s fears is having nothing to play for at the end of the season, but he pointed out: “I think there will be some clubs out there

pleased not to have anything to play for which means they are safe in the division.”

He added: “But for us we’ve always spoken about trying to be ambitious and see if we can push to get in and around the top six.

“We’ve done that again, put ourselves in a very good position but we’ve done that because we’ve worked hard. We’ve not really focused on anything other than concentrating on the next game and trying to win the next game.

“But it’s an exciting end to the season, isn’t it, three games left and we’re in good form.

“So we should be pleased and we should be looking forward to the next game.”

Turkish side back in for Jed

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk TURKISH TOP flight side Besiktas are again aiming to try to sign Jed Wallace on a free transfer, a report this week claimed.

The Super Lig club wanted to strike a pre-contract agreement with Wallace, 28, in January.

Nottingham Forest also had two bids rejected by Millwall, who offered Wallace a new contract last summer.

Besiktas are managed by former West Bromwich Albion boss Valerien Ismael and the report says that he sees Wallace as fitting into his preferred 3-4-3 formation.

Wallace has scored six goals and has eleven assists in 36 league games for Millwall this season.

The former Portsmouth and Wolves attacker has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League. There is still a chance that could be with Millwall, as the Lions are a point off sixth place with three games left.

Besiktas have a chance of being able to offer European football next season. They are currently seventh, four points off Basaksehir in fourth.

Fourth means entry into the Europa League qualifying rounds.

Besiktas, who are based in Istanbul, are one of the Big Three in Turkish football alongside Fenerbache and Galatasaray.

Wallace’s Lions team-mate Benik Afobe spent the 2020-21 season on loan at Turkish side Trabzonspor, where he scored five goals in 28 games.
