Crystal Palace voted best place to live in London

The area, straddling the five boroughs of Southwark, Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth and Lewisham, was named the best place in the capital in a new guide.

It topped the list of six locations in the capital chosen by The Sunday Times in its annual best places to live guide published last week.

"While the mix of green spaces, pretty Victorian streets and chichi shopping and dining isn’t unique, Crystal Palace has a welcome urban edge, too – as well as community spirit and a fascinating history," wrote the newspaper.

The average house price in Crystal Palace is currently £526,000, which has grown 17 per cent since 2020.

In 2016, Crystal Palace was named in the Sunday Times newspaper's top ten list of the best places to live in London. Now, five years

The judges at the Times wanted to celebrate improving towns, villages and city centres, attractive and well-designed homes, and locations bursting with community spirit - all of which they said have become increasingly important to us due to the pandemic.

"The Sunday Times Best Places to Live list is necessarily subjective," said Helen Davies, property editor at the Times. "Leave it just to statistics and you will never capture the spirit of a place. For that, you need to visit to take into account that ‘you have to be here’ feeling."

On 29 May, the Corgi Cafe is opening up in the Refinery at Bankside in celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Des Hamilton Casting, a BAFTA-award-winning casting company for film and television, is looking for someone from Southwark to star as the lead role in a Netflix series.

The company, which specialises in finding untapped talent, are open to applications from people who may have never acted before, alongside those with more experience.

Southwark locals are being offered the unique opportunity to star in animated series for Netflix, developed by Academy-Award winning writer, director and actor Taika Waititi.

Now known as Taika David Cohen, Waititi is the creative genius behind Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, of which the latter is the top-grossing New Zealand film.

The character they want to fill is a nine to twelve year-old British Nigerian boy, who is imaginative, creative, friendly and expressive. They will be a regular feature in the series, if successful.

‘Oh Mother’ is one of several events hosted at Longfield Hall this summer.

There will also be a classical music concert, contemporary dance exploring “the taboo of adolescence”, and an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ adaptation.

Longfield Hall is a Victorian-era community hall that regularly holds events such as martial arts training, yoga and dance.

Built in 1891 by William Minet, a Huegenot philanthropist, the building survived the Blitz and, in the 1970s, hosted Britain’s first publicly funded black theatre, the Dark & Light Theatre Club.

waking watch up 40 per cent in just six months

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The number of buildings in Southwark that have been found to need waking watches because of fire safety problems has risen 40 per cent in the past six months.

London Fire Brigade data shows that Southwark has 102 buildings that need trained staff patrolling around the clock as of March 15, up 44 per cent from 71 on September 15 last year, because they are considered at high risk of fire.

That means Southwark now has the second-highest number of waking watches in London, behind only Tower Hamlets which has 174.

Buildings can come off the waking watch list when the fire safety issues are fixed, but the ongoing rise in the number of buildings with waking watches is driven by building owners carrying out surveys and realising they have fire safety problems.

Communication between the fire brigade and building owners is also getting better.

Waking watches can be extremely expensive and are another headache on top of the many other problems faced by leaseholders in buildings deemed a fire risk because of construction defects, such as unsafe cladding.

Government data from January last year found that flat owners were paying on average £499 per month in London.

Asbestos-contaminated children’s playground will not reopen until late 2023 Exclusive

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk A children’s adventure playground that closed during the first lockdown is contaminated with asbestos and will not reopen until late 2023.

An independent soil specialist hired by the council discovered the presence of the material below the soil of Frederick's Adventure Playground on Westcott Road in Walworth in late 2019. A council spokesperson told the News: "The soil specialist recommended that an area needed to be covered with a protective membrane and fenced off to prevent access. We immediately complied with this advice.

“A few months later a pandemic was declared and the playground was closed.

“We have since committed to redesigning and landscaping the whole playground, assigning an investment of more than £600,000. Works will include new play equipment and will prioritise

the creation of a safe space, where local children can play together and have fun.”

The playground once buzzed with life but is now overgrown and decrepit, with a locked gate barring entry.

A banner outside says “new play equipment coming soon”. In reality, families will have to wait over two years before getting to enjoy it.

Cllr Jasmine Ali said: “This summer, we will ask local people what they’d like to see in the playground. This will inform our plans and make sure that the final design meets local needs.

“Once this is complete, practical steps such as design work, securing planning permission and a contractor to complete the works, will lead onto landscaping and construction, which we hope to complete in late 2023.

“Works will include new play equipment and will prioritise the creation of a safe space, where local children can play together and have fun.”

At a Newington Ward meeting on 15 February a Southwark Council officer said: “We want to do this right rather than quickly.”

A Bermondsey man who subjected six young girls to horrific sexual abuse has been found guilty of several offences spanning nearly twenty years.

Robert Pearce, 54, was convicted of 23 offences at a trial at Croydon Crown Court that finished on Tuesday, April 12.

Pearce abused six victims between the ages of seven and sixteen, over an eighteen-year period from 1999 and 2017. His convictions included five charges of rape and twelve of indecent assault.

Police said he also used his position as a leader in a live action roleplay group to groom and abuse young girls who attended the events.

PC Helen French, who led the investigation, said: “Pearce took complete advantage of these young girls and his actions have undoubtedly had a significant impact on all of their lives.

“I want to commend their courage and bravery in speaking to police and providing the evidence which has proved vital to his conviction.

“I hope this prosecution shows that we take all allegations of sexual abuse extremely seriously, no matter how much time has passed. I would encourage anyone who has been a victim of such abuse to come forward and speak to us – we have specialist officers who will listen and support you.”

One of the offences was reported to police in 2020 and a police investigation led to several other victims coming forward.

Pearce will be sentenced on June 20.

By Herbie Russell herbie@southwarknews.co.uk Two teenagers have been charged with two counts of attempted robbery and two counts of grievous bodily harm following an incident in Burgess Park this week.

King Green, 18, (d.o.b. 15.02.04) of Camberwell, and a 17-year-old male were charged on Wednesday 13 April.

They were also charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

Their arrest came after reports of a robbery where two men were said to have been stabbed in the park in the early hours of Tuesday morning, April 12.

Police said neither of the victims’ injuries were life-threatening or lifechanging.

Both teenagers charged were due appear in custody at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday April 13 as the News was going to press.

The encampment of approximately 80 tents and 120 people arrived on Friday and is made up of climate activists from the UK, Northern Ireland and Europe.

It is being used as "a place of rest" by the environmental enthusiasts who have been setting off every morning to protest across London.

Extinction Rebellion are demanding the government declares a “climate emergency”, pledges to reduce carbon emissions to net-zero by 2025, and sets up a citizens’ assembly to “oversee the changes”.

Wolf, the 55-year-old campsite coordinator said: "We've got a lot of support from the locals. We've had shops offering food and the council have been around checking on our welfare.

"People have shouted 'crusties get a job' but it's their kids that we're doing it for."

Wolf said he enforces a strict no drugs,

no loud music policy and has established a cleaning rota.

Sparrow, a 28-year-old protestor who doesn't live anywhere but instead "floats around" said he'd been brought down by "the impending doom of the end of the world."

Jade Sinclair, a 31-year-old mother-ofthree from East Dulwich had crossed the park to see the site. She said: "You don't know what to expect from people like this. You associate homelessness with drugs so when you see all these tents in the background you assume the worst."

"But now I'm here I'm not too bothered about it. There are no floats. It doesn't look like a carnival."

James Looney, a 55-year-old Peckham man said: "It's good. Someone's got to do something. I'd like to see them take over the whole park!"

Asked about the controversial roadblocks which have seen ambulances blocked off, activist and nurse practitioner Anna Bunton said their policy was to let "blue lights" through when possible.

She added that pollution causes health problems, which helps justify when ambulances are inadvertently stopped.

Sarah Hudson, a 33-year-old doctor from Peckham, supported the camp but said: "You can't block the ambulances from the road when they prevent people

from going about their business. That can't be justified by the cause."

The activists say they will leave the park

by Monday 18 April to make way for a traveller's funeral procession.

Southwark Council said: “We have been clear with XR from the start that we do not support their use of Peckham Rye Park or the adjacent common as a camp.

“This remains an unauthorised event in a much loved and well used park. We have not provided any facilities or equipment – it is being managed by XR themselves.

"We have had to take a pragmatic approach to them not seeking our permission, while acknowledging that they have support from many residents across the borough in addressing the damaging effects of climate change.

“We have made every effort to try to limit the duration and impact on local people, working closely with the Metropolitan Police to monitor and respond to the situation as necessary.

"Other similar camps in other boroughs over the last few years have passed without incident, but we arranged for our community wardens to check in with those on site every day to make sure we can respond locally to any issues.

"XR has promised to leave the park as they found it, with no negative impact to the park or common.”

Avril Jones, the chair of Southwark's monitoring group for stop and search, said the figures didn't always "make comfortable reading".

"To see that we have the highest figures

within the Met for this age group will need a further conversation with our senior local officers," she added.

"From our previous discussions, and our background knowledge about serious youth violence in Southwark, it is unfortunate that knives are prevalent as weapons of choice. Therefore this would account for the high level of stops, although there is work to do on the positive outcome of taking weapons off the streets.

"As a scrutiny group, we discuss ways of reducing the impact that this has on young people stopped, as it is usually seen negatively by those affected by a stop and search encounter."

Ms Jones said that she and the group would continue to monitor stop and search operations, including looking at footage from officers' body-worn cameras.

"These conversations continue to highlight what is important to the local community in Southwark and we hope some of our recommendations are taken on board by the police to make positive change."

southwark highest for stop and search for under 14-year-olds Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk More children aged fourteen and under were stopped and searched by police in Southwark over the past year than in any other London borough.

Met Police data shows that Southwark was far and away the borough with the most stops between April 2021 and March 2022, with 463 for fourteen and under. Some 458 of those were children aged between ten and fourteen, while five were under the age of ten.

Some 258 of those children were black, with 169 white, fifteen Asian and twenty of another unspecified ethnicity. Just 56 of the 463 searches resulted in a 'positive outcome' - where police find something potentially criminal.

Southwark also had the second-highest number of stops of people between the ages of fifteen and nineteen, the next bracket up, with 2,976 searches in the same period. Of those people, 1,757 were black and 982 were white.

Southwark was sixth overall for stops among all ages over the past year, with 9,926 - behind Westminster, Newham, Lambeth, Croydon and Tower Hamlets.

Black people were consistently the most stopped-and-searched group in the borough across the year, as was the case from March 2020, when data availability starts.

Similarly to London as a whole, by far the most common reason for police stops in Southwark was suspecting people of drugs offences, making up nearly 60 per cent. Other common reasons were suspicion of weapons offences, making up about 20 per cent, and suspicion of stolen property, making up about 16 per cent.

Police took no further action after nearly three-quarters of searches in Southwark, data shows, roughly in line with London as a whole. Fifteen per cent of searches resulted in arrests.

Chief Inspector Annmarie Cowley, the Stop and Search lead for Southwark and Lambeth boroughs, said: “We understand that being stopped and searched is a very intrusive experience and that some individuals, particularly those who are

under 18-years-old, might be more vulnerable and have greater concerns about being stopped and searched by officers.

“How we carry out stop and search is vital, and we are redoubling our efforts to listen, engage and explain why we do what we do, to make improvements based of individuals’ ‘lived experience’ and to build trust.

“While we wish stop and search was not

The night tube returns to the Jubilee Line next month

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Night Tube services will return to the Jubilee line next month, with the Northern and Piccadilly lines resuming later in the summer, after all Night Tube services were suspended in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

Services on the Jubilee line, stopping here at Southwark, London Bridge, Bermondsey and Canada Water, as well as nearby Waterloo, will run throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays from the evening of Saturday 21 May, joining the Central and Victoria lines, which resumed Night Tube services in November last year.

London had 1.6 million people regularly working at night before the pandemic - that is a third of the city’s workforce. The Night Tube is a safe, affordable and quick way for the people who keep London going at night to get to and from work.

for London (TfL) is running a normal service on the Victoria line each weekend and a regular service on the Central line.

TfL said the full introduction of Night Tube services has not been possible so far as training still needs to take place to address resourcing issues on the Northern and Piccadilly lines. The return of these lines also has to be planned around complex vital operational and engineering closures. This includes the ongoing closure of the Bank branch of the Northern line to allow completion of the upgrade at Bank Tube station, as well as other major closures and bespoke timetables. TfL said full Night Tube services will be re-introduced in the coming months.

Nick Dent, London Underground's Director of Customer Operations, said: “The return of Night Tube on the Jubilee line, along with the Piccadilly and Northern lines later in the summer, will be a boost to the night-time economy and help our customers travel around

London overnight at weekends.

“London is a global destination and we are proud to be doing our part to help people to safely and enjoyably benefit from the best of its worldleading night-time economy.”

There is strong demand for services that run later into the night at the weekend. There is now regularly more than two thirds of journeys compared to before the pandemic on the Tube network on weekdays, but that has reached as high as 80 per cent at weekends, while ridership on buses is regularly at 75 per cent of prepandemic levels.

TfL also operates an extensive night bus network along with the Night Overground. More than one hundred routes currently run through the night.

The Tube continues to operate between approximately 05:30 and 00:30 through central London from Monday to Saturday, and TfL has started running some trains earlier on Sunday mornings to help customers travel at those times.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is not responsible for the service, and he has been calling for the service to come under Transport for London's control.

Cllr Catherine Rose, Southwark Labour’s cabinet member for transport, parks and sport, told LondonWorld: "Southern Rail has consistently let rail users in Southwark down by hiking up prices whilst continuing to reduce services. Southwark Labour is calling for the government to end this failing franchise and bring it back into public ownership as it has done with LNER, Northern and Southeastern.”

In an official statement posted online, Southern Rail has blamed "a backlog of training for drivers, meaning fewer are available than is ideal" for the reduced service.

Govia Thameslink Railway, which owns Southern Rail, has since said: “We plan to run more commuter services from May, prioritising our available resources to support as many passengers as we possibly can.

“Trends suggest people will continue to work from home more regularly in the future which means the railway has to adapt to lower passenger numbers and the impact of reduced commuting on the industry’s finances, while at the same time, encouraging passengers to return when they are ready. We are safeguarding key services such as those for schools and rural communities with limited public transport alternatives, meeting demand for commuting and leisure, and then supporting the largest off-peak service that we can.”

Together these changes mean that employees earning up to around £34,000 will be better off in the 2022/23 financial year, while those paid more than this will be worse off.

The average salary in Southwark is £47,900 a year, according to data by Plumplot.

This is far higher than the London average of £34,400, which is one of the reasons why Southwark is more severely affected by the tax raid.

Someone in Southwark earning £25,000 a year will pay £124 less NI for 2022-23 than they did last year, while those on £50,000 will pay £189 more.

“The cost of living in London, including its disproportionately expensive housing market, means that ordinary Londoners are already being squeezed," said London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

"This tax hike will compound the existing cost of living crisis. Yet again the Government is simply making the wrong

Health Secretary Sajid Javid this week said the NI increase was the fairest way to fund tackling the backlog in the NHS. "When we spend money on public

services, whether it’s NHS or anything else, the money can only come from two sources. You raise it directly from people today through taxes or you borrow it, and then essentially you are asking the next generation to pay for it," he said.

Exasperated commuters have learned that Southern Rail will not change their reduced Covid timetable, meaning trains going from London Bridge through Peckham and Dulwich will not become more frequent.

In July 2021, the operator introduced a timetable with fewer regular trains, citing the ‘pingdemic’ as the culprit. Nine months later, little has changed, with Southern Rail blaming the “legacy” of the pandemic.

Police thanked members of the public who helped them find the family of a man who died on the railway tracks at Denmark Hill Station last month.

Workers in Southwark are facing one of the biggest National Insurance hikes in the capital, analysis finds.

Carl Davidson, aged 53 - known as Chase - died at around 8pm on Tuesday, March 22. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Mr Davidson was from the South Bank area and was born in London.

Despite extensive enquiries officers had not been able to find Mr Davidson’s next of kin or any other family members to tell them that he has died. But after releasing a photo of Carl on Monday which was shared by the News on social media they were able to find the family within 24 hours.

British Transport Police said: “Thank you for sharing our appeal.”

Southwark residents will pay an extra £36.8 million in National Insurance (NI) contributions after the government's planned increase kicked in on April 6.

The rate of NI for workers has been increased by 1.25 per cent to help pay for improvements to the NHS and social care following the coronavirus pandemic.

Southwark's £36.8 million pound bill for the tax increase makes it one of the top five boroughs in London.

Only Wandsworth (£50.7 million), Westminster (£42.8 million) and Lambeth (£36.8 million) face bigger tax hikes.

Mum raises money and awareness for cancer support A MOTHER-OF-ONE is raising money and awareness for a lesser known type of cancer, after undergoing robotic surgery to remove part of her tongue.

Sue Ahmad hosted a charity fun day in Croydon, in aid of head and neck cancer care at the Cancer Centre at Guy’s. The event included a bake off judged by Jairzeno from The Great British Bake Off, arts and crafts workshops, a raffle and karaoke.

Sue, a former teaching assistant, has raised around £2,400 so far of the £3,000 target for Guy’s Cancer Charity.

On New Year’s Eve in 2018, Sue, 52, was diagnosed with throat cancer after noticing a lump in her neck.

Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer globally, with more than 650,000 people diagnosed annually. Around 1,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with head and neck cancer every month.

After being referred to the Cancer Centre at Guy’s, Sue underwent stateof-the-art transoral robotic surgery using a da Vinci robot to completely remove the cancer from the back of her throat (the oropharynx). She also required a neck operation to remove 43

lymph nodes, including the cancerous one, in March 2019. Following this, Sue had to undergo a course of radiotherapy.

The money raised will go toward the recently announced Guy’s Head and Neck Cancer Centre. Some of the main focuses of the centre are around pioneering minimally invasive robotic surgery and survivorship, and improving the long-term care for patients like Sue. Many are left with ongoing medical needs as a result of the treatment they have received, including physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and psychological care.

In addition to the charity fundraising day, Sue has further fundraising events coming up, including a sponsored walk on Sunday 24 April.

Mr Asit Arora, robotic head and neck surgical lead and European proctor for Transoral Robotic Surgery, said: “I am so proud of Sue and it is a testament to her courage and bravery that she remains cancer free nearly three years following completion of treatment.”

THERAPISTS FROM Guy's and St Thomas' community neurorehabilitation team have been encouraging students in Southwark and Lambeth to choose careers as allied health professionals (AHPs), so its specialist health teams begin to reflect the diverse community they serve.

The team, who held virtual and face to face careers talks in 14 secondary schools in 2021, offered advice on how to become an AHP and information about jobs at Guy's and St Thomas', ahead of students choosing university courses.

Emmet Leyden, a speech and language therapist at Guy's and St Thomas' and a former teacher who came up with the initiative, said: “When I look around at my colleagues, we don’t really reflect the patients we visit, as few of us come from the boroughs we serve.

"During the talks we highlighted

the great things about our posts and the things you need to consider if you are thinking about becoming an AHP. Things like being a good listener and compassion."

Currently Guy’s and St Thomas' employs over 1,000 AHPs who work at its hospitals and in the community.

AHPs support patients in lots of different ways and the Trust employs several types of AHP including diagnostic radiographers, dietitians, music therapists and podiatrists (feet specialists).

30 students from Sacred Heart Catholic Secondary School in Camberwell took part in a careers event run by the team.

The Trust is also working on a number of other initiatives to raise the profile of the 350 different roles available and how to access them.

A food bank run by the Millwall Lionesses goalkeeper is holding a fundraiser this Good Friday (April 15) to keep supporting people in the local community.

The Lions Food Hub event is taking place at the Millwall Community Centre on Bolina Road in Bermondsey from 10am-3pm.

Visitors can get toys, bikes and books, as well as tea, coffee and cakes in exchange for a donation to the food hub.

King's receives large donation to support pioneering liver research King's College Hospital has been given a sizable donation to support pioneering medical research.

The hospital was present with a cheque worth £75,000 to develop promising liver treatments, which have already saved the lives of children with liver disease.

The treatment could now become standard for adults, thanks to this week's donation.

The ground-breaking technique works by implanting liver cells to function like a temporary liver, enabling the child's damaged organ to recover.

It has already restored liver function in children with acute liver failure, however the money will fund clinical trials to see if the treatment can be used on adults as well.

"Every day King’s staff work wonders not only to save and enhance lives now,

but to drive research and innovation that keeps care advancing," said Gail Scott Spicer, chief executive of King's charity

arm, which received the donation.

"As a charity we’re thrilled to help the hospital teams take this work further," she

added.

King's is the only hospital in the world working on this game-changing treatment, which is being spearheaded by the renowned Alex Mowat Pediatric Research Laboratories.

The donation, presented by Innovation, will also be used to support the team's work to improve the quality, function and activity of transplanted liver cells, besides looking at how they can be cryopreserved and banked.

"This pioneering work has saved and continues to save the lives of sick and dying children," said Antoinette Mitry, managing director at Innovation, an air conditioning and building services company.

"I am delighted that our company could contribute to the support of King’s scientists with their ‘from bench-tobedside’ amazing research.”

The research team at King's will be recruiting patients for the next phase of the clinical trial, funded by the Medical Research Council.

They hope that further commercial support will help them upscale the technology to save the lives of many more patients.

The event, a first-of-its-kind, was held on Saturday evening at Peckham Levels, Rye Lane, and saw local politicians probed on issues facing minority ethnic groups across the borough.

Nuala Riddell-Morales, director of the Carnaval del Pueblo Association, a charity that puts on cultural events for the Latin-American community said: “It’s an opportunity for people to ask the things they want to ask. We’re really excited about it.”

Topics of discussion included racial inequalities, the expulsion of traders from the Elephant & Castle shopping centre, regeneration, gentrification and more.

Sitting on the panel were Peter Baffoe, Green candidate for North Walworth, Damian O’Brien, Liberal Democrat candidate and current councillor for London Bridge and West Bermondsey, and Kieron Williams, the leader of Southwark Council and Labour candidate and current councillor for Camberwell Green. No Conservative representative attended.

A hot topic was Southwark’s numerous regeneration and development projects and whether they really served local people.

Kieron Williams blamed the Conservative party, saying that rule changes had made it easier for developers to push proposals through.

When asked about the expulsion of traders out of the shopping centre due to Elephant and Castle's regeneration, he said: “When I speak to people around the country, they are amazed by how much we’ve engaged with the local community.”

This drew groans from the crowd with one woman saying "this is a

fantasy!”.

Peter Baffoe of the Greens said: “The process hasn’t been as good as it should have been.

“We need to see what pressures we can put on private developers to ensure our traders aren’t after-thoughts but are right at the start of the planning process.”

Liberal Democrat Damian O’Brien said that local communities knew best and needed to be better consulted.

All the councillors said they wanted to see the Carnaval Del Pueblo reinstated, a Latin-American festival held in Burgess Park that has been cancelled since January 2011.

Peter Baffoe said: “We will do everything we can do to ensure the celebration can continue.”

Kieron Williams said: “It would be great to get it back in the borough” and pointed out that funding was available for cultural events through the Southwark cultural celebrations fund.

The council recently gave the organisers of Carnaval Del Pueblo a £10,000 grant which will fund a smaller event to take place in August.

The prospective councillors were also quizzed on how they would help residents during the cost of living crisis.

Kieron Williams said the council had set up an emergency support fund and an energy support scheme and, as the largest council landlord in London, was offering cheaper rents than the private sector does.

Peter Baffoe said there had been a decline in community and charity groups and that the council needed to end competitive grant funding that pits groups against each other.

After the hustings event ended there was a party, with visitors treated to Colombian drumming and a Bolivian DJ. The event was organised by the Southwark Latin American Network and R.E.A.C.H, networks of community organisations supporting Southwark’s Latin-American and black communities respectively.

But Ms Noonan-Gunning, an academic focusing on food poverty, was summoned to a follow-up interview on March 30 with the broader London Labour party.

There party bureaucrats told her she was being reconsidered as a candidate, in part because of a blog she wrote nearly two and a half years ago about food inequality, charities and former Jeremy Corbyn.

As someone on the left of the party, it was perhaps unsurprising that Ms Noonan-Gunning was in favour of Corbyn and his former number two, John McDonnell. But, she said, she is pragmatic and open to working with the entire spectrum of the Labour party.

Other areas she was criticised for were an alleged lack of campaigning, and not understanding how to set a legal budget. Ms Noonan-Gunning rejected these claims. She said she had been less interested in internal party politics and more involved in grassroots work to help vulnerable local people feed themselves.

The panel recommended she be deselected. At an appeal the next day,

her witnesses were Simon Brears, the head of the Southwark Labour party local campaign forum (LCF), Southwark Labour chair and Goose Green councillor James McAsh, and Labour MP and fellow food campaigner Ian Byrne MP. Cllr Evelyn Akoto sent a letter of support.

The appeal failed and Bethan Roberts - who lost to Ms Noonan-Gunning in the Rotherhithe Labour elections and was standing in the Lib Dem-held ward of Surrey Docks, was shifted over to Rotherhithe in an “emergency process”, according to an email sent by Mr Brears to Rotherhithe ward members of the party. He added that the process was “highly irregular” and “unusual”.

Ms Noonan-Gunning said: “Following my selection by Rotherhithe Labour Party members to represent them in the 5th May elections I was targeted, and underwent intensive scrutiny by Labour’s London Regional establishment, and removed as a candidate. It’s been a nightmare with my own Party. I have voted Labour all my life and joined Labour when I was 16-years-old.

“I was democratically selected by Rotherhithe branch to fight for all of

As a dietitian, food and health are two of the basic rights I stand up for. I continue to organise at the grassroots in our communities and workplaces so we can defend these and all our rights. I have broad support within Rotherhithe and Southwark Labour. This is shameful business.

The Labour party in London declined to comment. Bethan Roberts could not be reached for comment.

The seven-page document contains three core pledges to "bring accountability to Southwark Council," "champion the community, transport and the environment" and "promote good governance and effective public services."

Conservative candidates are hoping to break Labour's hold in a number of wards, particularly in Dulwich and South Bermondsey, at the polls on 5 May. Tristan Honeyborne and Clive Rates are standing for Dulwich Village, where they hope to channel anger against Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs), in-filling and antisocial behaviour into a win for the Tories.

"The past four years have been the only four in living memory without Conservative councillors on Southwark Council," read the manifesto. "It means Labour have pushed through their ideologically driven, flawed policies and spending plans without any effective scrutiny or opposition.

"Anyone who disagrees is simply ignored, and many people’s voices are not being heard. That’s bad for democracy and bad for decision-making," it added.

Writing in the News, the leader of Southwark Council, Kieron Williams, said Labour's plan would "make Southwark fairer, greener and safer. With more good jobs, safer streets and estates, more homes local people can afford, a greener future and real support for Southwark residents who are struggling."

He also defended Labour's record in office, saying the party had exceeded its target of building 2,500 new council homes, created 5,500 new jobs and planted more than 10,000 trees.

Southwark is traditionally a Labour stronghold. In the 2018 local election, it

won 107,400 votes, compared to the Lib Dems' 43,760 and the Tories' 20,160.

The 2022 Conservative Manifesto contained many policy commitments.

TAKE two: Southwark Soap Box stars on crime

Our unique Gogglebox-style coverage of the issues that affect residents in the run-up to the council elections on May 5th

In a Gogglebox-style show, we are filming how four Southwark households react to what local politicians say about three key areas: housing, crime and education, and transport and the environment.

We are focusing on one part of the

borough - Newington, near Elephant and Castle - which had the lowest voter turnout in the last elections in May 2018.

For the first episode on crime and education, Labour’s candidate John Batteson who is hoping to retain a seat for his party, the Liberal Democrat’s Abdul Gbla, who is hoping turn Newington yellow and once more Green Party candidate Clare Wood sat down with the News for a debate. The Conservative Party were invited to send one of their candidates, but again did not respond to our repeated requests to

join in.

We then showed their answers to four households from a range of backgrounds in the ward to get their reactions: Ola, a mother of four and a Brandon Estate council tenant, mother-and-daughter Paula and Kate, also on the Brandon, Kym from the Newington Estate and her partner Les, and Neil and Emma, leaseholders in Oyster Court.

The focuses: estate inspections and public safety, community wardens and budget cuts, and youth centres and community facilities.

Your council makes important decisions and has responsibility for a huge range of things that affect your everyday life - from what housing gets built and where, to closing off roads to cars and keeping the streets clean and tidy.

Individual councillors in your area are also meant to help you with problems that you come to them with.

Southwark Council has been controlled by the Labour Party since 2010. Some 48 out of 63 councillors are from Labour. Fourteen more are from the Liberal Democrats, and there is one councillor who is independent. There are no Conservative or Green Party councillors at the moment, although people from both parties are running in May.

Local elections are normally held every four years. The elections to choose new Southwark councillors will take place on May 5 this year. You vote by ward - the area which you live in - for whichever candidates you want to represent you. Depending on the ward, there are either two or three councillors to choose.

Any adult from the UK or EU living in the UK, or any adult from the Commonwealth with permission to stay in the UK can vote, as long as they register.

Soap box Neil - “my seven-year-old daughter woke to shouts of ‘I will murder you!’’”

“I will murder you! I will murder you!” Speaking from home, musician and teacher Neil told of how a man leaned towards his family’s flat in their Oyster Court development in Walworth - waking his seven-yearold daughter from her sleep to hear these chilling words.

“She came in, her little heart was racing… she was like ‘Daddy!’”, he said, impersonating her voice.

Neil and his wife Emma, leaseholders of their flat in the private development, were taking part in the second edition of Southwark Soapbox, the News’ project to raise interest in the local elections on May 5.

Focusing on Newington, an area between Walworth, Kennington and Elephant and Castle, we are interviewing candidates for the elections on three key topics: crime, housing, and the environment and transport - before showing the debates to four diverse households in the ward.

Asked about some residents in Newington like Neil and Emma feeling unsafe in and around their homes, Liberal Democrat candidate Abdul Gbla brought up Labour budget cuts and said the party would bring in 100 new community wardens to patrol the borough’s streets. Labour is already spending £2 million on wardens.

Kym, a Newington Estate resident thought this was a good idea. “I think we should have more wardens, I think we should have more people walking across the estate late at

night and early in the morning.”

“We never heard from anyone like asking or offering any services about more security,” said Paula, who lives on the Brandon Estate. “Nothing!”

John Batteson, one of the Labour candidates for the ward, shot back at Abdul that the budget cuts were forced on the Labour council by national spending cuts made by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition when they came to power in 2010.

“Now when decisions are made like that, the local council has to take action in terms of where to prioritise its funding,” Mr Batteson said. “I think if we’re going to lay the blame at any party, the Liberal Democrats have to take their share”.

Mr Gbla said: “We haven’t been in government for seven years, you know, we’re not in government no more, so… the last time the Lib Dems was in government was - when was that?”

Pressed on what Labour would do despite budget cuts, Mr Batteson said bringing in more CCTV and lighting was important. He added that he felt unsafe and these fears were often worse for women.

Watching, Oyster Court leaseholder Emma said: “If I come home late at night, you [Neil] prefer me to walk the main road, so I walk all the way round… Either someone walks with me through here, or I go all the way round the main roadway and Neil will stand on the balcony and watch me come down the road.”

Kate, Paula’s daughter who lives with her on the Brandon Estate, said a good change had been made locally, Describing a “garden area”, she said: “They added light, before there was no light - people would just sit there with their hoodies in the dark.

“And I would just be like ‘that’s kind of creepy, why are you sitting there? Now they added a light, which is actually really nice, so when I’m coming back from work for example and it’s quite dark, it’s nice to be able to see whether there’s someone there, there’s someone maybe hiding.”

John added that it was important to work with local people on these changes. But Kym said, despairingly, “But this [anti-social behaviour] has been going on for years and years - when is it going to change?”

Representing the Green Party, Clare Wood said that local people didn’t feel their concerns were being addressed by the Labour council.

“It’s a bit of an indictment that they’ve already tried to speak to the council and feel that they have not been listened to,” she said.

Les, Kym’s partner and a Brandon Estate resident, was sceptical about all the candidates’ claims to want to listen to residents.

“The only time the council come round is like now when it’s coming up to voting, to get their party in,” he said. “Then they come knocking on your door.”

“Wow.” These were some of our focus groups’ reactions on learning about the short opening hours of the youth centre on the Brandon Estate, which has hundreds of homes and many vulnerable young people.

There are few public amenities in the area: the Jack Hobbs centre, a facility for everyone on the estate, is also closed much of the time, and an adventure playground near the Newington Estate is shut for refurbishment until next year.

Asked why Labour was struggling to keep valuable community spaces in Newington open, Labour councillor John Batteson struggled to answer. He said how important it was for young people to keep active, citing his own experience playing football, and said school and other activities were also vital.

Batteson’s answer, visibly cringing when she heard him defend his party by saying that activities for young people “don’t all have to come through one youth centre”.

Neil was less interested in the politics.

“Could it be that it’s just incompetent people who are running this stuff? Could that be the reason why? That they’re just lazy and incompetent?”

Green Party candidate Clare Wood said that it was astonishing how little the youth centre was open, pointing out the large numbers of young people in the ward left without easily available activities.

Mr Batteson said he didn’t know much about the timing of the Frederick playground refurbishment, simply repeating his well-worn point that it was important for young people to have things to do.

At this point, Liberal Democrat candidate Abdul Gbla accused him of trotting out cliches.

“You can clearly tell by us three here who is the politician, and who’s here with the soundbites,” he said. “ I mean come on

mate, you went on and on and on about this and that, this and that but still didn’t answer the question.”

“Ooh they do get a little feisty, don’t they,” Brandon Estate resident Kym said.

But when pressed for what the Lib Dems would do in power, Mr Gbla struggled to answer, merely repeating that the three community spaces “really need to be looked at.”

If the candidates want to listen to Newington residents’ experiences with crime and anti-social behaviour, two of our households have a wealth of experiences to share.

Drugs are one of the major concerns.

Kym said: “You get all the… drug people, all walking about, all throwing up by the football pitch, waiting for their… person to come along and give them their fix, which is disgusting. Kids are going to school!”

Neil added: “There’s no control - I mean

there’s a haze of weed most nights when you walk through this area.” He said that police didn’t seem to care and he was afraid to keep calling them because he thought he might be labelled a nuisance.

Other stories included a man dancing around outside Neil and Emma’s window brandishing a knife in the middle of the day, and Kym’s door being “booted in” several times by miscreants.

She said: “I’m just worried for my grandchild, not being able to go out and have a phone, or not being able to walk the streets wondering whether you are going to get mugged, or wondering whether someone is just going to come up and put a knife in you, because that’s what’s happening.”

“Even in a coalition, if you don’t agree with what the other party is doing, you don’t have to go along with it,” Brandon Estate resident Les said. “You can still say ‘no, we don’t agree with that!’”

game?,” she said. “Be careful! Because to me it seems like he doesn’t know the history of the party he’s representing, to know that they started the whole cuts, cuts, cuts, cutting things - from when they went into coalition with the Conservatives.”

Mr Batteson said that funding cuts to community wardens weren’t the only reason for residents feeling there had been a rise in anti-social behaviour on their streets - and pointed to the cost of living crisis as another factor.

But Neil didn’t agree. “That’s not really an excuse,” he said. “‘I’m poor so I let a firework off in the street’... ‘I’ve got a hard time at home so I’m waving a knife in front of a window.’ Yeah maybe but it doesn’t necessarily connect.”

Brandon Estate resident Kate, who lives with her mother Paula, was more sympathetic to this argument. “Money issues, that does cause people to act out of course, if people are struggling, struggling for food, for anything, it just makes them act out, but that’s not the sole reason”.

Ms Wood said she felt community wardens were important because they have a relationship with residents.

Kym, Les’ partner, disagreed. “I think they’d get a lot of stick… They’re not an authority, are they.”

Les chimed in: “They’re not going to take any notice of them, they’d just be laughing at them, like the community police. They’re going to laugh at them ‘you can’t do nothing mate!’”

Labour blames Lib Dems for cuts as candidates fight over community wardens He was watching an argument between Liberal Democrat candidate Abdul Gbla and Labour’s John Batteson as part of our Southwark Soapbox series to boost turnout in May’s upcoming local elections. The argument came after Mr Batteson blamed Labour’s massive cuts to the budget for community wardens - people whose job is to stop anti-social behaviour - on reductions to local authority funding from the government by the Conservative and Labour coalition.

Asked whether he thought his party’s cuts were a mistake, Mr Gbla tried to deflect the blame.

“Yes we were in government with the Conservatives, and there are certain things that we were not in control of.

Obviously there are certain things that we had to compromise on, you know, because of the coalition that we had.

“But fast forward to where we are now and it’s been seven years since we’ve been out of government and Labour’s been there [in control of Southwark Council] since 2010.”

Eye-watering £3 million investment for Bermondseybased ‘dark kitchen’ business

The business sets up “dark kitchens”, places where restaurant brands outsource their recipes so they can access customers in areas where they don’t have restaurants.

The Bermondsey site is a 61,000 sq ft industrial unit on Ilderton Road, now converted into eleven individual dark

kitchens.

Co-founder Máté Kun told the Evening Standard: “We’ve accepted cooking as the norm for too long. Building on the success of food delivery apps, we are introducing a step-change in how we eat.”

Founders of the ten-minute food delivery app Gorillas Ronny Shibley, Jörg Kattner and Felix Chrobog, are also taking part in the investment.

Ronny Shibley said: “Where Gorillas can deliver groceries to your door in ten-minutes, the logical next step would be to go into restaurant food.”

On Saturday 2 April, the government announced that Southwark would receive a chunk of the £302 million ‘family hubs and start for life package’.

These hubs will provide new parents with childcare advice, as well as guidance on breastfeeding and keeping babies healthy.

Southwark is one of 75 local authorities eligible for a slice of the fund, which is targeted at those boroughs with “the highest levels of deprivation”.

Timmy Mallett’s "utterly brilliant" bishop blessing

The pink hammer-wielding, 'Wacaday' presenter is circumnavigating Britain on a solo cycling and painting tour of the country, covering 4,000 miles in 100 days.

Andrew Nunn, Dean of Southwark, graced his bike and bag with the scallop, the symbol of St James, the patron saint of pilgrims.

Although he did not adorn Mallet's "itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini" with the sacred christian symbol, the Dean did say on Twitter: "Great to be asked to bless Timmy Mallett as he set out on his round Britain cycle ride. Travel well, Timmy."

While on his travels, Mallett will paint a picture on each day of his journey. He was inspired by painters of the Napoleonic era such as William Turner and John Constable, who were unable to leave Britain to paint due to the wars raging around Europe.

Instead, they opted to paint British landscapes including white cliffs, Welsh castles and Scottish highlands. Timmy Mallett, joining the Chris Evans Breakfast Show said: "‘You know what, it would be really interesting to follow in their paint tracks.'”

Timmy was last seen zooming his way along the serene cliffsides around Newquay, Cornwall.

Is our high rate of stop and search justified?

ou may have seen it before - a young boy stopped at the side of the road by police officers, who are looking through his things. You may have even been that boy, or girl. It looks humiliating, and by all accounts it doesn’t feel great either.

We reported this week on Southwark being the borough with the highest number of police searches on children aged fourteen and under over the past year, with 463.

There are reasons why this happens of course. Violence among young people has soared: we saw 30 teenagers killed in London last year, many by other teenagers. Police say they wish that stop and search “was not necessary” but claim that the tactic “is a vital tool in preventing violence”. There is a lot to be said for this and indeed many parents whose families have been for victims of robberies or knife crime have spoken in favour of stop and search.

But the Met have still not explained why Southwark had the highest number of stops, and why it was an outlier compared to all the other London boroughs. The next highest was Bromley, with 350 stops over the year - a 24 per cent drop. Surely violent crime among young people is not so much higher in Southwark than anywhere else in London? Is it a case of stop and search being a tactic that is encouraged more by officers in this area to act as a warning to youngsters that the police are proactive, and how much police intelligence comes into play before hand?

When approached for comment this week, Avril Jones, the head of Southwark’s community stop and search monitoring group - not a police officer - said that the figures made for “uncomfortable reading” but added that knife crime was prevalent in the borough, and this could be behind the high rate of stops.

She said she would be taking up the issue with senior local police officers to clarify more.

The police explanation does make logical sense. But think about what you were like at the age of fourteen - how would you react to being publicly humiliated, seemingly for no reason?

Would you think rationally that statistically this was part of a broader effort to keep weapons off the streets? Or would you be more likely to feel victimised, perhaps because of the estate you live on, or the colour of your skin?

Maybe some readers will think this is a small price to pay to keep violence down. But police talk a good game about building trust in “our communities”; how effective is stop and search in achieving this goal?

It will always be a difficult line for the police, who must enforce the law but feel currently they have a lot of bridges to build within communities.

We do this by supporting them to develop and maintain skills, try new opportunities, make and maintain friendships and spend their time in ways valued by them and the community. We work in partnership with other local charities, to provide as many social, volunteering and work opportunities as we can to the people that come to Bede.

We are looking to people that can work a variety of shifts, including full-time, part-time or flexible sessional cover. Our core service runs Monday-Friday, 9:30am-3:30pm, and we also support other projects and social clubs in the late afternoons. The effect of the (Prescribed routes) Traffic Order would be to:(a) revoke and remove an existing fire gate and existing pedal cycle gaps in LIVERPOOL GROVE, and the vehicle prohibitions associated with those features; and (b) provide a ‘no motor vehicles’ restriction in that part of LIVERPOOL GROVE which lies between its junction with Walworth Road and a point 66m north-east of that junction, (i) exemptions provided for emergency services vehicles at both points of the part road closure, and (ii) further exemptions provided for vehicles travelling in a north-westerly or south-westerly direction in Liverpool Grove which are ‘permitted vehicles’ as recognised by the Council (the vehicle registration number thereof being registered with and authorised by the Council for this purpose, such authorisation being granted by the Council on a discretionary basis and subject to such criteria as may be set by the Council), vehicles used for road maintenance or cleansing purposes, and refuse collection.

sport@southwarknews.co.uk WEATHER INTERFERENCE and an excellent pitch for batting combined to sentence the LV=Insurance County Championship between champions Warwickshire and Surrey to a draw at Edgbaston.

A mouth-watering opening-round clash between two sides with serious title aspirations ended in stalemate with Surrey on 43 without loss in their second innings after Warwickshire piled up 531 in their first.

On a pitch offering the bowlers nothing, Bears wicketkeeper Michael Burgess hit a career-best 178 (221 balls, 20 fours, eight sixes) - his fourth first class century. He enjoyed resolute support from the tail, notably number 11 Olly Hannon-Dalby with whom he added 122 for the tenth wicket.

Hannon-Dalby made an unbeaten 11 (89 balls) having got off the mark from his 67th ball faced.

Warwickshire took advantage of the advantageous batting conditions which, along with the loss of 47 overs in the match to rain and bad light, killed off any hopes of a positive result.

Then home side resumed on the final morning on 293 for seven and soon raised the third batting point in unusual fashion when Craig Miles headed a short ball from Jordan Clark over the slips for four.

Surrey's bowlers persevered but the pitch showed no sign of deterioration and Burgess added 55 with Miles (32, 60 balls) and 54 with Henry Brookes (29, 65 balls). Miles and Brookes both perished to slick slip catches by Ollie Pope, off Reece Topley and Ryan Patel respectively, which set the scene for a bizarre passage of play in which Burgess and Hannon-Dalby stretched the innings by another 134 minutes.

When Hannon-Dalby went in,

Burgess was on 69. Twenty overs later, the number 11 was still there and still to score when Burgess reached his ton. It was one of those sessions totally inexplicable to anyone who is not familiar with cricket...and pretty inexplicable to many who are.

With the game long dead, batsmen turning down runs and weary bowlers plodding in, attention turned to numerical quirks which could not possibly affect the match result, like would the 50 partnership be raised with Burgess having scored all 50? (It was).

Surrey plugged away nobly, but Burgess plundered a weary attack until lifting Will Jacks to deep mid-wicket.

The last two hours had been whimsical but Warwickshire's 531 was a seriously good recovery from 41 for four.

The 48-minute, post-tea session in which Surrey began their second innings is unlikely to feature in any future publications which chronicle the glorious history of cricket.

“I asked the lads to start the season on the front foot and I thought they did that quite magnificently with the bat and with the ball,” Surrey head coach Gareth Batty said. “We were 116 for 0 with the bat and then had them 41 for four so I am pretty happy with those starts, we just need to extend them.

“In pre-season we saw that the hard work that we saw the boys put in in winter nets was transferring outside relatively quickly which is good. We just need to keep building from that performance because there were some very good things in it. We just keep trying to be a fraction better next time.

“The pitch got slower as the game on and became turgid at times which is why the game panned out the way it did. But I am super happy with the way we played with bat and ball. Yes, we can be better, we asked the players to start on the front foot and they certainly did.”

Canada Water were rebranded this season from Ballers FA Youth.

Godwill Amasse with a hat-trick and goals from Mecca Maxime-Samuels and Stanley Sammland clinched the

under-15 title.

Coach Charlie Pearce said: “Everyone involved with Canada Water FC from players to coaches would like to thank all the other under-15 teams in the league who have pushed us this season and we wish you all the best for the rest of the season.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parents for their support this season as they are as important as the team. Without their help with travel for the players

to games and running the line we wouldn’t be able to focus on the team as much as what we are able to now.

“Although the season has concluded for the under-15s the team will now look back and reflect on it looking to go again next season as it will be another tough campaign with many ups and downs.

“As well as success for the under-15s there is success for our under-12s as this year it’s their first season together.

Although they may not win anything

they have had a fantastic season, not only in the league – which they are on course to finish in the top end of – but they also reached the quarter-finals of the London Cup which for any new team is a great achievement.

“We are all so proud of them and they will get stronger year upon year. We would also like to wish them all the best in their remaining games and would like to thank team manager Tommy McCloud for all his hard work this season in helping the team develop.”

STANSFELD TOOK another big step towards promotion to the SCEFL Premier Division after their 2-1 win at home to Lydd Town last weekend.

Ross Morley and Billy Parkinson scored within four second-half minutes after Reece Mortimer had put the visitors in front a minute after half-time.

The Stans were in action against Larkfield & New Hythe this week as they aimed to clinch promotion.

Meanwhile, in the league above, Fisher drew 2-2 at Bearsted and are fifteenth.

Boss speaks about past and future – and prospect of leading side in new stadium

By Simeon Wright sport@southwarknews.co.uk GAVIN ROSE insists that Dulwich Hamlet’s aim this season is still promotion to the National League, and pinpoints that as the minimum ambition for his entire Champion Hill reign.

The long-serving manager has not yet signed an extension to his current contract, which was last renewed in the summer of 2019 and is due to expire at the end of the season.

The Hamlet have spent the best part this season inside the top seven of the National League South, but a run of seven games without victory has seen them drop to tenth with five matches remaining.

Next up is a trip to fourth-place Ebbsfleet United on Good Friday, and Rose told the News that things must improve quickly to keep the promotion bid alive.

Rose said: “We haven’t won in seven which is a long, long time for us to go without a win, we’ve not gone that long without a win all season which is quite damning at this time. But the aim against Ebbsfleet is to try and win, and then address the next things from there.

“It would be silly to think about the next games after Ebbsfleet, we just have to try to stop the rot and win this game against a tough team. They’re obviously vying to be as high as possible for their play-off position so we know they’re a very good team. We were fortunate enough to have beaten them at home, so we know we’re capable.”

“I think [the players still believe].

Mathematically we can still get in the play-offs. The odds are against us now with teams having games in hand and more points, but nobody has been overly consistent in the league. We’ve had a really bad run and don’t want to be in a position where we’re relying on others losing, but it’s a reality because it’s happened all season.

“It’s up to us to do our job and then

A minimum position of thirteenth would secure the highest league finish in the club’s history after Rose led Dulwich Hamlet to fourteenth in their first-ever season in English football’s sixth tier – 2018-19 – though he admits that that accomplishment would not ease the disappointment of missing out on the play-offs.

“Those sort of stats are okay but to be honest aren’t what you set out the season for,” Rose said.

“You don’t aim just to get the best finish in Dulwich’s history, you try to achieve something which is meaningful in terms of either the play-offs or promotion.

“It’s a fact that maybe in years to come you’ll think, ‘that was good’, but right now it isn’t my goal.”

Rose’s first thirteen seasons at Dulwich have been both successful and eventful, including lifting the Isthmian South title in 2013, and a memorable penalty shoot-out win

over Hendon to win promotion to the National League South, which the team remarkably rallied to achieve at the same time as it was exiled from Champion Hill in 2018.

The Hamlet boss is still as excited as ever about the direction the club is going in, as well as what he could achieve in his own managerial career, whether that be with Dulwich or eventually “elsewhere”.

Rose added: “As a manager it’s been slightly frustrating over the last four

years since we got promoted because I’ve always felt that even though we try our best to put a team out there that would compete at a level, I’ve always thought that we’re pushing because if we were to achieve promotion we could be up against it with the amount of finance needed, and with our club being slightly unstable with the future.

“But that seems to be changing now.

It seems to be sort of heading in the direction that there is going to be a brighter future; where there is going to be a new stadium, and that gives obviously a lot of optimism for myself and my coaching team, to really think that if we do achieve then we can keep achieving rather than causing a bigger problem for ourselves.

“I’m realistic and understand that in football and in life things go on.

I’m ambitious and being at the club so long...I think probably I stayed at the club in the last four years when there wasn’t that brighter future for it.

We got promoted but were in a really bad position financially and in terms of our future. That would’ve been the wrong time to bail out.

“I stuck on because I’m a supporter as well as the manager of the club, and I think another manager coming in at that period would’ve struggled and wouldn’t have realised what was really going on behind the scenes and what was available.

“Myself and the management team have done all of that to be given the opportunity to work in a stadium where we can keep building, keep growing and see where that takes us.

“At the same time, the club may also have ambitions to move on at some point, and that wouldn’t be wrong of the club to have that ambition because it is a progressive club. And if that ever comes then as a supporter of the club I’d always back it, and I’d always do what’s right by the club rather than what’s right for me.

“One day I’m sure I’ll manage elsewhere, but hopefully I can leave the club at least in the Conference, and I’d like to take them there.”

Gavin has clear Hamlet aim

Dealing with a mounting list of injuries and suspensions, manager Jack Wheeler selected six of the club’s under-18 Academy side, and a large and appreciative crowd saw a tight game in the sunshine in Rotherhithe.

This was the last home league game of the season. Millwall started well and sixteen-year-old Frances Kerr could have scored when she struck an early chance narrowly wide with her left foot.

Poppy Payne was strong in the back four, after replacing Amy

Nash due to strict concussion protocols. Milly Penfold and Sophie Chapman worked hard in a midfield as they faced Fulham’s Romanian international Oana Negrea.

The Lionesses started the second half on top, but defensive errors resulted in two quick Fulham goals, before Millwall staged a fighting comeback in the last fifteen minutes.

Payne set up Mollie Hawkins for a brilliantly-taken goal for 2-1, and then Maisie Joyce - who won Millwall FC’s Goal of the Month for March - struck the post with another trademark free-kick.

The hosts just could not find the equaliser and it was Fulham who went home with all three points.

The Lionesses travel to Dartford for their last London & South East Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division game on April 24.

JUST WHEN we thought it was all over, Millwall get us all excited yet again.

Heading into a crucial Easter period, the Lions are back in proper contention for the play-off places, with the gap now sitting at just four points.

Millwall hadn’t completed a league double over Barnsley for 28 years and knew they couldn’t slip up at the weekend. They pretty much can’t slip up in any game from now on in.

They made a nervy start here. Callum Brittain was allowed to drift inside Lions’ back three, and had it not been for Bartosz Bialkowski the Tykes would have been ahead early on.

The Pole was forced into action soon after, this time keeping out Callum Styles after he had got himself free on the right of the Lions’ penalty area. Jake Cooper and Murray Wallace were both guilty of going for the same ball and getting in each other’s way.

Scott Malone responded for Millwall, a low shot that failed to trouble Brad Collins in the Barnsley goal properly.

Wallace headed wide from a corner just moments later. That would prove to be the last action for Collins as he would was forced off with a shoulder injury and was replaced by Jack Walton.

Walton’s first piece of action came when he was forced to gather a Cooper header. However, he wasn’t able to keep out the hosts on 31 minutes. Danny McNamara met Jed Wallace’s cross at the

It turned out to be a dream day for the academy product. Benik Afobe produced brilliant footwork on the left to find Malone whose deep cross to the back post was headed in my McNamara.

The Tykes had offered little after those two early chances but against the run of play they halved the deficit. It was a fierce strike from the edge of the box from Romal Palmer after Carlton Morris had used his strength to hold off Daniel Ballard.

League One is looking ever closer now for the South Yorkshire side. They are eight points adrift of the safety line, and their defending for the third and fourth goals showed why they are struggling.

Jed Wallace may well depart come the summer, but he is still showing his quality in a Lions shirt. His cross was met by Ballard, who forced a stunning save from Collins, but Barnsley’s woeful defending was exposed again as no one picked up Oliver Burke and he tapped home for his first goal since arriving from Sheffield United in January.

The fourth goal was not long arriving.

Cooper again won a header in the Barnsley box and the ball fell to Afobe who fired across the goal and found the bottom-right corner to make sure of a victory that keeps the play-offs within Millwall’s sights.

As well as McNamara and Burke, it was also a significant day for Afobe.

The striker reached double-figures in the league for the first time in six seasons. Afobe, 29, has one more year left on his Lions deal after this season.

He will surely be a priority for Millwall this summer and the irony is he is helping the side to a play-off challenge on loan from a club, Stoke, who were expected to challenge for promotion and offloaded the forward because they thought he wouldn’t be good enough to help them.

Burke getting off the mark was also crucial. There may only be five games remaining, but that goal could spur him on. It was the type of goal that Millwall haven’t scored enough of this season, a poacher’s finish inside the six-yard box.

The Easter weekend has notoriously been known for either making or breaking a side’s season. It’s two games

in four days and six crucial points to play for. Realistically, Millwall need them all.

Preston and Hull have little left to play for, but those are the kind of fixtures that can derail a team’s charge. They are unpredictable, with perhaps sides trying out new things for next season which could make them more difficult to analyse.

The Championship play-off race is tight. There is simply no room for error.

Millwall don’t have it in their own hands, they need to rely on others to slip up. In the last round of fixtures, five rivals failed to win. There will be more slip-ups, but Millwall have to make sure it won’t be them.

The only thing that Rowett and his team can do is take it one game at a time and focus on themselves. That is all they can control. It is still the fact that there is very little pressure on them with not many people fancying their chances.

Millwall love the title of being the ultimate underdog. They have thrived off that before. Can they upset the odds again? Who knows, but one thing that is for sure is they are giving it one heck of a go at the moment.

Oliver Burke prods home against Barnsley

Forward could help deny parent club a play-off place EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk OLIVER BURKE is in the pretty rare position of trying to deny his parent club a place in the play-offs – and he made a big contribution towards that last Saturday.

Of course both Millwall and Sheffield United could still finish in the top six, which would make things interesting as his loan deal is only until the end of the regular season.

Burke got off the mark for the Lions when he scored the third in the 4-1 win over Barnsley as the hosts cut the gap to the sixth-placed Blades – who drew at home against Bournemouth – to four points.

Does Burke have any banter back and forth with his team-mates at United?

“Not really,” Burke said. “I’m on loan at Millwall and I look at it as I’m a Millwall player. I’m playing for Millwall, the manager believes in me here.

“You have to care more for the club you’re actually playing for. But obviously it’s interesting. It’s a bit of a scrap. I’m only on loan, I’m still a Sheffield United player but I guess it would be a weird position to be in if we make the play-offs.

“I don’t know how it would work [if he could play in the play-offs]. I’m not too

sure.”

Millwall have only been this close to a shot at the top flight at this point of the season a handful of times in two decades.

The Lions know they can’t really afford many slip-ups. Burke explained how they are approaching the run-in.

“We don’t really like to think we have so much pressure. We feel as a club already we’ve done so well,” Burke said.

“But when it gets tight like this with points and such an interesting season so far, you never say never in this league, you don’t know what result you can get.

It’s a bit crazy.

“I don’t really follow [the other games] that much, not really. I usually tend to look at the table and see how we are doing, train hard and try to get results for us.

“Obviously everybody talks about it in the dressing room and how close we are, but focussing on the next task in hand is the best thing to do, really, and not dwelling on it too much because that’s when you create pressure on yourself, I think.

“That’s just what we’re like as a group [not talking about the play-offs publicly]. We know we get the best out of ourselves if we don’t really think too much about it. We just go out there and focus on the next game, winning the next game.

“Then you’re more relaxed, you’re not worried about what other games are coming up, what other teams are doing.

That piles on other pressures that are not needed at that time.”

Millwall had just lost two league games in a row when Burke joined and were nine points off sixth. He made his debut as a substitute in the next game, a 1-0 defeat at Blackpool, which meant the Lions were eleven points off the play-offs.

Burke didn’t consider a top-six challenge when he was weighing up the move in January.

“To be honest, not really, it wasn’t really a topic spoken about,” Burke said.

“Everybody knows Millwall as a club, it’s a very difficult club to play. You could see that when I played against Millwall, it was always a very, very difficult game to play in.

“I knew that we’d do very well with the squad that I saw before joining, players with real quality. A lot of people forget that we have a lot of quality within the team. There’s a real togetherness.

“I didn’t really think we’d be where we are in the table now, but it’s not really surprised me after seeing the training since coming in. It’s not a surprise to me now because I’ve seen the players and seen the standard. It’s really good and there is a great morale as well. With that you always have a really good chance.”

Jed Wallace said recently that Millwall maybe don’t get the credit they deserve for the quality of some of their football. Burke tends to agree, though isn’t overly bothered by outside perceptions.

“I don’t really look into what people think of Millwall as a club and stuff,” Burke said. “I’ve come here on loan and I’m just trying to get the games in and do my very best.

“But a lot of people would be shocked if they were to come down to the training ground and watch training, you see the games and the quality of the goals. I agree with that, we don’t really get the credit that we deserve.

“Some people just see Millwall as a rough, fighting team, but there is a lot of quality there on the pitch as well.

“Other teams will know that, but some people on the outside looking in won’t know that. They just see Millwall and think, ‘hooligan’, sometimes, don’t they?”

Burke missed a month and a half from February to early April with a hamstring injury. His goal against Barnsley was his first of the season.

He said: “It was an amazing feeling. It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet and then obviously in a win in front of the home crowd was a great feeling.

“I’m happy to be back in the team after a bit of a drag with my injury but these things happen, I guess.

“Because there is so much competition I think you have to make a bit of an impact now with all the boys that are fighting for a spot in the team.

“For me personally I’m very happy with it but I know there are lads breathing down each other’s necks to get in the starting team.

“It’s healthy competition as well, it’s good for us. I’m happy with the goal and for the team to get the win, which is the most important thing.”

Burke has mainly played as a winger in his career but Millwall have used him up front. Last weekend he started as part of a strike force with Benik Afobe.

As well as Burke getting his first goal, Afobe got into double-figures in the league for the first time in six seasons.

Burke is another Lions player who is a big Afobe fan.

“I’m very, very happy for him,” he said. “ He’s really come on this season and you can see with his goals, everybody knows he can do it, it’s what he does.

“He’s enjoying his football and he’s really confident as well. He’s such a great lad, he helped me settle in really well.

“I don’t mind playing as a striker as well in a two. It all depends on who you’re playing, you can benefit playing as a striker sometimes or on the wing.

“It’s important to have flexibility in different positions.”

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL FACE two very different challenges over the Easter weekend – but boss Gary Rowett doesn’t pay much attention to where sides are in the league.

Millwall go to Preston on Good Friday and the home side still have a chance of finishing in the top six.

The Lions then host a previously relegation-threatened Hull City side with little left to play for this season on Easter Monday.

The Lions ended third-place Huddersfield Town’s seventeen-game unbeaten run last month but then had their own eight-match unbeaten sequence ended by Stoke City, who are in mid-table.

Millwall have almost no margin for error in their last five games and also need rivals to drop points.

Rowett was asked about the different positions of the next two opponents.

“If Preston win the game they’re a point behind us so they’ll see it as they’ve got plenty to play for,” Rowett said. “Whether they are looking viably at the play-offs, I don’t know.

“They’ll both want a strong end to the season. Every team you have to respect are going to play to their maximum to try to win the game. I would want to do that if our team was a little bit lower down the league.

I would want the team to go and perform for their own futures and to finish the season strongly.

“I don’t really read too much into where a team is in the league. It’s more about working out a game plan that we think can cause Preston problems at home.

“They’ll want to make the run-in interesting in front of their own fans.”

Millwall go into the game on the back of a win and first goals for the club for Danny McNamara and Oliver Burke in the 4-1 victory over Barnsley at The Den last Saturday.

Rowett said earlier this season that McNamara had to add more of an

attacking output to his game.

He has since got his first assist in a Lions shirt and Rowett – who was a Premier League full-back – believes McNamara is now getting into better areas.

“Whatever I say in the press is always geared towards how I feel but also one or two messages to people to read whatever they want,” Rowett said.

“The fact of the matter is the modern-day full-back has to contribute in attacking and defensive sense because they’re in between, that’s the whole point of the wingback.

“If you were a full-back the emphasis was more on the defensive but even nowadays most full-backs in a back four are quite attacking.

“Certainly in a back five you have to get forward and you have to influence the game in the other half of the pitch.

“I was pleased he did that. He’s got better at that, he’s got in better positions but he just hadn’t managed to finish off those chances.

“There were quite a few moments where you thought he would but he hadn’t quite done it.

“I think it’ll be a relief for him, it’ll be a nice feeling to know that he can do it and give him that belief to go and get in those areas more often.”

Millwall could get injury boost

Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MASON BENNETT and Luke Freeman could be available for Millwall’s last three games of the season – though the pair might run out of time to get fully match fit.

Bennett and Freeman have returned to some light training but won’t be ready for the Easter games against Preston and Hull.

Bennett has been out since March 19, while Freeman has only played thirteen minutes as a substitute following his loan move from Sheffield United in January before injuring his hamstring.

“They’re both in and around it this week in training. They haven’t joined in yet [in full training],” Millwall manager Gary Rowett told the News.

“Luke joined in the warm-up this morning so that usually means he’s a little bit closer to it, he’ll probably join in with some training this week as will Mason, I’d imagine.

“And then I would think after these next two games they would be available for selection.

“But at that point with three games to go I have to obviously assess what we’re playing for and how we use players. They’ve been out a while.

“It would be nice to have them available.”

Luke Freeman have returned to light training. Those players could become available after this weekend’s games.

Elsewhere, Rowett has plenty of options in midfield and attack, in contrast to earlier this year when so many players were out.

Maikel Kieftenbeld will be confident of keeping his place over George Saville, and Oliver Burke’s first Millwall goal could give him the edge in the battle for a first-team place with Tom Bradshaw.

Preston are mid-table but only four points off the Lions who are ninth.

Shaun Hutchinson should be available but the captain has a fight to get his place back.

Centre-back Hutchinson has been out since he damaged a calf in the 1-0 win over Sheffield United at The Den on February 26.

That was the first of five consecutive clean sheets, with Daniel Ballard slotting in on the right side of the defence after the on-loan Arsenal defender returned from knee surgery.

Ballard, Jake Cooper and Murray Wallace have been the back three in Hutchinson’s absence, with Millwall conceding just six goals in their last nine games.

Rowett also has Ryan Leonard available but it’s doubtful he’ll dislodge Danny McNamara, who scored his first goals for Millwall last weekend.

Oliver Burke could leave Sheffield United this summer

Lions manager not ruling out permanent move

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT hasn’t ruled out trying to pursue a permanent deal for Oliver Burke – but says that decision will be made at the end of the season.

Burke, 25, joined Millwall on loan from Sheffield United in January.

Ironically, he is aiming to help his loan club into the play-offs potentially at the expense of his parent club.

Burke bagged his first goal for the Lions last weekend, and it came at a crucial time as Barnsley had just

scored to make it 2-1. Burke showed a poacher’s instinct to prod home a loose ball in the area and the hosts went on to win 4-1.

It was Scotland international Burke’s first goal in fifteen games this season, nine of them for Millwall.

Burke got injured in his fifth game, the 2-0 win at home to Sheffield United, and was out from midFebruary to early April.

But he has shown glimpses of his talent, offering Rowett more options as he can play out wide or through the middle. He was up front with Benik Afobe last weekend.

Burke’s goal was his first since he scored for the Blades in a 2-1 Premier

League win against Manchester United at Old Trafford in January 2021, and Rowett hopes there is more to come from him.

“It’s nice for him. You’ve seen the likes of Benik and Bradders [Tom Bradshaw] in really good goal-scoring form. Jed [Wallace] has contributed with goals and assists over the season and the last few seasons, he’s been very consistent.

“The likes of Burkey coming in, you have to impact that. If you’re playing in those top three positions you have to impact with goals and goal contributions.

“I thought his attributes would suit the game on Saturday. Hopefully that goal will give him a bit of an extra lift and we’ll see more again from Burkey.

“We know what he can do, he’s shown that over his career. What he needs to do now is try to show that more consistently.

“He’s in a good place and is enjoying it here.

“They’re the sort of decisions that you make at the end of the season [over a potential permanent deal] when you sit down with the parent cub, the player and your own club and you make an assessment as to what we want to do moving forward.”

Skipper Hutchinson has been out since February with a calf injury but has returned to training. Millwall play Preston on Friday and Hull on Monday.

In his absence, Daniel Ballard has gone into the back three with Jake Cooper and Murray Wallace.

The Lions have kept up their playoff challenge despite missing the influential Hutchinson.

Hutchinson has been a mainstay in Rowett’s team since he took charge in 2019 but could have a battle on his hands to get back into the starting XI. “When you get to this stage of the season you realise there are very few training days and matches left,” Rowett said, looking forward to the last five games of the season.

“There’s been a good atmosphere and players are raring to go after the weekend.

“It’s really about who’s available for the game, first and foremost. There’s a good chance [Hutchinson] will be involved.

“As for starting the game that’s different decision-making processes.

Do we want to disrupt a winning team, do we want to make changes?

“Hutchy is a player that’s been in the team nearly every time he’s been fit.

He’s an important player for us but he’s been out a while.

“We have to take that all into consideration. I won’t give too much away in terms of team selection but he’ll certainly be available if he trains all week.”
