‘Completely illogical’: Sir Simon Hughes speaks out against constituency boundary changes Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Sir Simon Hughes has spoken out against proposals to move part of north Southwark into a parliamentary constituency with Vauxhall in Lambeth.

St George's ward, which includes the Imperial War Museum, St George's Cathedral and London South Bank University, where Sir Simon is Chancellor, would become part of a Vauxhall and Camberwell constituency under the Boundary Commission for England's plans.

Former Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Sir Simon said that the change would make no sense, as the constituency MP would have to deal with two local councils - although admittedly this is already the case with the Dulwich and West Norwood constituency - and these landmarks all have close ties to Southwark.

The changes to constituency boundaries are being proposed to ensure that each MP is voted for by roughly the same amount of people. The second round of consultation ended on Monday (April 4). There will be another round later this year before the Boundary Commission makes the final changes in 2023.

Southwark is currently covered by three parliamentary constituencies: Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Peckham and Camberwell and Dulwich and West Norwood.

The new constituencies would be Bermondsey and Borough, Peckham, Dulwich and Sydenham, and Vauxhall and Camberwell.

Bermondsey and Borough would be made up of eight wards: Borough & Bankside, Chaucer, London Bridge & West Bermondsey, North Bermondsey, North Walworth, Rotherhithe, South Bermondsey and Surrey Docks.

But it would lose St George's and Newington wards to Vauxhall and Camberwell, which would also gain the Camberwell Green ward, which is currently in Peckham.

The new Peckham constituency would stretch from South Bermondsey station in the north-east, and the start of Walworth Road in the north-west, down to Honor Oak

Dulwich and Sydenham would cover the area from Herne Hill in the north-west to Beckenham in the south-east.

Sir Simon added that the three Walworth wards - Faraday, North Walworth and Newington - should all be part of the same constituency for once.

He also called on the Boundary Commission to include Rotherhithe in the name of the constituency that covers the north of the borough.

Sir Simon said: "I really believe that it would be completely illogical to split St. George’s ward off from the other parts of SE1 in the Borough and Bermondsey.

"It would also be very sad and bad if the chance was missed not just at last to bring all parts of Walworth together in one constituency after they have been divided politically for so long, but now to make things worse by carving Walworth into three separate constituencies, one mainly with Lambeth voters.

"It would also be great for Rotherhithe to be part of a constituency name again - as it was in the last century.

"I believe I have made a strong argument for all these changes - and now call on the Boundary Commission to support them.”

Current Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle also spoke out against the proposed changes during the previous consultation.

Secretary to the Boundary Commission for England Tim Bowden said: "The 2023 Boundary Review will rebalance the number of electors represented by each MP. It's important that the constituencies we shape reflect your local community as best as possible.

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Loneliness in the elderly is being combatted by man's best friend, thanks to the efforts of a small south London charity.

A volunteer-run charity is launching a dog befriending service in Southwark, after a stunningly successful pilot last year. CareDogs, which also operates in Lambeth, Bromley and Lewisham, wants to tackle social isolation in the elderly through a range of services centred around the positive impact dogs can have on our lives.

The charity is asking volunteers to come forward with their beloved pet dogs and befriend an older person in need, with the simple aim of encouraging human connection through canine companionship.

They want to give dog owners the opportunity to pair up with elderly people, especially if they are housebound, living with dementia or going through a bereavement.

"I was lost after my wife Jo died unexpectedly last year," said 80-year-old Colin from Bromley, one of the first people to benefit from the charity's pilot. "Having these walks every week has helped me regain structure - and I remember my love of walking. I now walk a lot more and feel so much better for it.

Colin was one of six elderly people who were part of CareDog's 2021 pilot, which the organisation said had a "huge impact" on their lives.

Some 500,000 elderly people go a week without seeing or speaking to anyone at all.

Almost one in five over-70s feel less confident to leave the house by themselves following Covid-19, alongside suffering increased levels of depression and anxiety.

In contrast, more than 85 per cent of dog owners said their pets had a positive impact on their wellbeing during the pandemic.

Plus studies by the American Heart Association say owning a dog is linked with living longer, with dog owners having a 24 per cent lower risk of dying from any cause compared to pet-less people.

"Our befriending service has already shown it can be an impactful and timely solution to the issue of social isolation and loneliness in the elderly," said CareDogs CEO and founder, Delphine Chui. "But we need the public’s help to increase its reach and make a real difference in the lives of individuals living throughout South London.”

CareDogs wants to raise £3,000 so that it can expand the befriending service to 50 volunteers.

Chloe O'Brien and her partner Tommy, who are childhood friends and both grew up in the area, announced that their first baby would be a girl on a speedboat on the Thames at Greenwich on Sunday (April 3).

Chloe, 27, told the News that they had a party at a nearby restaurant with family and close friends before Tommy, 29, asked her to come outside with him.

"All of a sudden a speedboat showed up," she said. "I couldn't believe it." The speedboat operators lit up flares that shot out pink smoke, showing that the child would be a girl.

This is the couple's first baby. Chloe, who is five months pregnant, said she was "absolutely over the moon" that she was having a girl.

Gender reveals are originally an American

phenomenon but have become more common in the UK in recent years. There have been some spectacular gender reveal events, as well as others that caused controversy - and several that led to huge amounts of damage.

A pyrotechnical device used in a gender reveal in California in September 2020 started the El Dorado forest fire that eventually spread across 22,000 acres, destroyed ten buildings and killed one firefighter, before eventually being put out more than two months later.

No such consequences have been reported from Sunday's event.

Cages to be fitted to trees amid unconfirmed dog-fighting rumours Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council is fitting cages to the bottom of trees in a Bermondsey church to protect them from allegedly having their bark stripped by dogs.

The reason that dogs may be biting the trees in St James' churchyard is unconfirmed. But two local people with knowledge of the situation, who asked to remain anonymous, said that they thought the trees were being used to train dogs to take part in dog-fighting rings, which are illegal.

One of the people said local police officers had been investigating an alleged dog-fighting ring being run in a Bermondsey council estate.

A spokesperson for the council said they were unaware of allegations of dogfighting, and police did not respond to a request for comment.

Dog-fighting is a cruel practice where dogs are trained to fight each other.

Animal rights charity the Humane Society said that the dogs get "severe

and often fatal" injuries in these fights.

The charity adds: "Typical dogfighting injuries include severe bruising, deep puncture wounds and broken bones.

Dogs used in these events often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion or infection hours or even days after the fight."

Dog owners may use trees to train their dogs to fight by strengthening their jaws, resulting in the bark being stripped away and the structure of the tree being damaged.

The council said that it would be installing the protective cages on the St James' churchyard trees in the next few weeks.

A council spokesperson said: “We are not aware of a dog fighting ring. However, we have received reports linking damage to trees in the Churchyard to dogs. We are working to fit cages around these trees, in order to prevent further damage.

“We ask that anyone who witnesses activity linking dogs to damaged tree stock, in this or any other open space, reports it to the police. It is cruel, unacceptable and may well be classed as criminal damage.”

Council spent nearly £15,000 on external investigation into former housing chief Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council spent nearly £15,000 on an investigation into former council housing boss Leo Pollak, the News can reveal.

The council commissioned a report by law firm Bevan Brittan into whether Cllr Pollak broke its own code of conduct after he was found to have been operating an anonymous Twitter account that was trolling people opposed to the council's housing plans.

Bevan Brittan found that Cllr Pollak had broken the code of conduct by acting anonymously, although not through the content of his tweets.

A Freedom of Information request by a local residents’ association and shared with the News has revealed that the council spent £14,614.80 on

fees for external firms that worked on this investigation. It is unclear if other companies were involved, or if all of this money went on the report, the contents of which were exclusively revealed by this paper in December last year.

Cllr Pollak stepped down from his role as head of council housing and apologised for his actions after he was outed by a newspaper in February 2021, although he remained in post as a councillor for the South Bermondsey ward. He is standing again in the local elections in May. He was also given a £4,881.10 payment for leaving his job in April last year – despite the embarrassing way he resigned from his job - meaning the council spent nearly £20,000 on his departure and its aftermath.

Bevan Brittan's report recommended that the council should not punish Cllr Pollak further, arguing that he had suffered enough. They also

recommended that no disciplinary hearing take place, adding that “this would not be in the public interest nor a beneficial use of Council resources.”

The dispute that Cllr Pollak took part in concerned the council's controversial 'infill' programme of housebuilding on existing estates. Operating under the anonymous @SouthwarkYIMBY Twitter account, Cllr Pollak argued with activists Robert Hutchinson and Lewis Schaffer online.

He sent dozens of tweets through @ SouthwarkYIMBY, including one where he accused a campaigner of being “a serial blusterer” and another where he denounced Mr Hutchinson for displaying “pathetic nimbyism".

Cllr Pollak has since apologised to both Mr Hutchinson and Mr Schaffer.

A spokesperson for Southwark Council said they were unable to comment because of publicity rules during the pre-election period.

The festival will return in May to “celebrate arts across the borough” and “rebuild community connections.”

There will be a huge selection of events, spanning art, music, literature, comedy, walks and talks, with some of the most “exciting names” in the arts.

Stars from Netflix’s After Life, Guardian food writers, Frankie Boyle, award winning documentary makers and authors, jazz masteros, pianists, and historians will be in attendence, while 400 local artists will open their homes and studios to public viewing.

The events, many of which are free, will run from 13 - 22 May. Opening the festival’s 29th year will be a Dulwich Choir Night, hosted by East Dulwich favourites, Tongue and Groove, joined by Vocallective and The Wrablers.

Other musical highlights include former Piano Winner of BBC Young Musician, Cordelia Williams; an organ recital at Christ’s Chapel, Dulwich, with Ben Bloor, the prizewinning organist of the London Oratory Church.

Visitors can also try out the classical organ, which dates back to 1760, at a guided session led by chapel organist, Marilyn Harper.

There will be a series of jazz club nights, with the award winning,multiinstrumentalist, Tony Kofi and The Organisation, Ronnie Scott regulars, Camina Banda and the Harlem Meer Cats.

This six-piece band, formed for the Dulwich Festival in 2015, now play at many of the country’s top jazz events recreating the music from the late 1920s to early ‘40s.

Traditional Gaelic folk music, Ceilidh, will also be played by Licence to Ceilidh, mixing highland fling with some modern rhythms.

The festival will welcome the return of the Artists Open House, where 400 local artists open their homes and studios to the public, while giving talks and insights on their work.

Fine arts, craft and ceramics, photography and prints, sculpture and street art and upcycling will all be on show.

This will run across both weekends of the festival.

Exciting names in comedy are coming to the festival, previewing their brand new tour shows ahead of this summer’s Edinburgh Fringe, including Live At The Apollo’s Sara, Barron, After Life’s Colin, Frankie Boyle’s New World Order and Rajiv Karia (writer for Have I Got News For You).

The Illusioneer Art of Magic Family Show will showcase a collection of puzzles, illusions & magic for all the family.

A series of informative Festival Walks include; a Mid-Century Oasis Walk, taking in Dulwich’s 1960’s Architecture; a Who’s Who In Dulwich Walk, featuring famous past residents brought to life by local actors.

Plus a local historian will tell the extraordinary story of the fate of Dulwich Picture Gallery’s world class collection of Old Master paintings during WW2 in Hells Bells with Brian Green.

Break-in at Bermondsey Greggs The Greggs on Ilderton Road in south Bermondsey was broken into on Monday night (April 4), writes Kit Heren...

The break-in is thought to have taken place at about 10pm, after the shop closed, so no employees would have been inside.

Police told the News: "Police are

investigating a report of a burglary at a commercial property in Ilderton Road, SE16.

"The offence was reported to have occurred at around 22:00hrs on Monday, 4 April. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances."

elephant shopping centre store ‘MAY HAVE TO pay hundreds OF thousands’ to relocate Exclusive

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A trader who claims he was forced out by developers may have to pay hundreds of thousands for a replacement shop.

Rakesh Patel, owner of Pricebusters, is facing a cripplingly expensive bill to relocate his shop, after his last one was knocked down for redevelopment.

Developers Delancey had promised to help traders at the old Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre with their relocation costs. But Rakesh claims they are not fully honouring this deal, leaving him to pay "hundreds of thousands of pounds" for a move "none of us wanted."

"The whole thing is so expensive, I could not believe it when I realised how much I will have to pay," said Rakesh. "The contributions of the developers are not even enough to get the project over the line."

Rakesh needs nearly £1 million to move and kit out his new 3,000 ft shop and has raised £550,000 himself, yet he says the amount Delancey is offering as a contribution is "nowhere near enough."

He was unwilling to provide exact figures, statting they were commercially sensitive.

"I am not looking for a freebie," said

Rakesh. "I am putting in funds that are huge, and I have had to borrow to get things moving. They [Delancey] promised us they would support us when we were thrown out of a place we were doing just fine in. Now we've been left out on a limb," he added.

In a statement, Delancey's Elephant and Castle team said: "We have been working extensively with Pricebusters to ensure

their successful relocation, meeting regularly with them over many months."

"We have offered Pricebusters significant support to meet their needs to cover the fit out costs for the new unit."

Rakesh and his family ran Pricebusters, a popular DIY and hardware store, for more than 35 years and said business was "quite comfortable before the famous closure."

He explained that his relocation costs

were so high as the new site being offered to him by developers Lendlease was "literally a shell."

It is without flooring, lights, sprinklers and plumbing, which Rakesh needs to pay for before the shop can open.

One of his main concerns is that developers have not clearly explained how they calculated their contribution.

"I am not being unreasonable," says Rakesh. "I want them to at least make me understand how they came to these arbitrary figures."

Rakesh claims the money set aside by Delancey to help traders from the old shopping centre cover their relocation costs was "obviously not enough."

He said Delancey committed to spending £640,000 on helping some 120 traders find new premises, in a deal struck with the council.

This agreement allowed the developer to demolish the old shopping centre, and redevelop Elephant and Castle.

Rakesh says at the time traders were "reassured" that in the deal Delancey promised a "discretionary" fund should traders require more money. But there isn't a fixed amount," said Rakesh.

"Discretionary means it is up to the developer to decide how much they want to give."

"It could be ten pounds," he added.

He also complained that "not a single

unit" at the new Elephant Square development, which was supposed to house displaced traders, was "anywhere near the size" he needed, while Rakesh's bids on other sites in Walworth Road were "gazumped", despite the fact that negotiations "were halfway through."

During his yearlong "battle" with Delancey, Rakesh's business has not been able to trade and he has suffered a "big economic hit."

"There are six families depending on this," he said. "They are all worried about how everything will pan out … it has been difficult for all."

He claims Pricebusters was given only six months' notice to move, although discussions about developing the centre had been ongoing for years.

Responding to these allegations, Delancey said: "We want these longstanding traders to be successful and are committed to doing all we can to see the retail destinations thrive. We will continue working hard on progressing the relocation process as effectively and swiftly as possible, as well as supporting all those traders who have already relocated."

Rakesh hoped Delancey "would see sense" and find a better agreement with him.

"I just want to get the store up and running again as soon as possible," he said.

"We need to restart our lives."

Southwark revealed as the sixth highest user of a ‘dangerous’ pesticide out of London boroughs Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has been criticised for continuing to use huge amounts of a pesticide that some claim could cause cancer, despite the health risks being well-publicised.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey bakery that was locked in a legal dispute with coffee giants Pret A Manger over a similarity in its name appears to have backed down - at least for now.

The bakery formerly known as Bread A Manger is now called Bread And Macaroon, and the owners of the Blue market shop have changed the front hoarding after meeting Pret CEO Pano Christou.

The companies are in negotiations

over paying for the cost of rebranding.

It comes despite one of the owners, Fouad Saber (pictured above), telling the News earlier that he was a “fighter” and that he would “fight this”.

Asked if he was disappointed, Mr Saber said this week:” No, not disappointed. It’s just a case of we don’t have the money to fight with them.”

Pret previously said that it was concerned about its brand being “diluted” by the tiny Bermondsey bakery, despite the fact that it has 550 locations, staffed by about 8,000 people, and was worth £1.5 billion when it was sold in 2018.

The council used 1,293 litres of glyphosate in 2020 and 1,360 litres the year before on its roads and estates, a Freedom of Information request by Pesticide Action Network UK (PAN UK) revealed. That made Southwark the sixth-highest user of pesticide out of all London boroughs.

Several local authorities in the capital have already stopped using pesticides, like Lambeth, and Hammersmith and Fulham.

Southwark said that it is going to cut pesticide use by 50 per cent this year, and wants to stop using it altogether.

The council stopped using pesticides in 1995 and switched to manual weeding for the health of residents and council staff, according to Donnachadh McCarthy, former Liberal Democrat councillor and columnist for the News, who campaigned for the change.

But the borough started using pesticides again when the council was under Lib Dem/Conservative control in the 2000s for cost reasons, Mr McCarthy said.

A council spokesperson said instead that Southwark stopped using pesticides on every kind of weed except Japanese knotweed and giant hogweed, which are very persistent.

Mr McCarthy has called on the council repeatedly to ditch pesticides since then, but to no avail.

Contacted for comment on the new figures, Mr McCarthy said: “It’s very disappointing that it did go backwards.

Southwark was ahead of its time [when it originally stopped using glyphosate].

“I see [council staff] spraying along the footpath, and there are kids are playing right beside it. I find it extraordinary in this day and age.”

The dangers of glyphosate are disputed.

The World Health Organisation and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have said it is probably linked to cancer, but the US Environmental Protection Agency said that there is no evidence that it causes cancer in humans if used properly.

German company Bayer has been ordered to pay out tens of millions of dollars after losing multiple lawsuits filed by people who believe its glyphosate brand Roundup was responsible for their cancer. Bayer maintains that its product is safe.

Meanwhile the London Assembly called on Mayor Sadiq Khan to stop glyphosate being sprayed on Greater London Authority and Transport for London land in 2019, and urge all London boroughs to do the same, citing the possible harmful side effects. Most London boroughs use glyphosate.

In February this year, the European Parliament called on glyphosate to be phased out within the next five years. The chemical’s current approval in the UK lasts until 2025.

The possible harms of glyphosate may not be limited to humans. Researchers from the university of Texas found in 2018 that the pesticide could be harmful to insects as well.

Mr Mccarthy added: “The impacts on environment are also problematic. It’s a huge problem and it needs to stop.”

Nick Mole from PAN UK said: “We are in the midst of a biodiversity crisis with species such as bees declining rapidly and pesticides named as a key driver. We also know that children are more vulnerable to the impacts of pesticides because their bodies are still developing.

“But despite these serious public health and environmental concerns, most London councils are routinely using chemical weedkillers for no other reason than keeping places looking ‘neat and tidy’.”

A Southwark spokesperson said: “We stopped using pesticides in parks and playgrounds in 1995, except for invasive weeds such as Japanese Knotweed and Giant Hogweed. These cannot currently be controlled by any other practical means.

“During the 2021 growing season we trialled the use of an alternative, nonchemical treatment to control weeds on streets and estates. Unfortunately, the alternative treatment failed to reduce weed growth in any significant way.

“However, we are determined to reduce the use of pesticides in Southwark. For the 2022 growing season we are cutting the use of pesticides on streets and estates by 50 per cent, as we work toward stopping its use altogether.”

Every council staff member who sprays pesticide wears the proper equipment and is full trained in line with government guidance, the spokesperson added.

heritage group speaks out over 'Huge' billboard planned for Walworth Road Exclusive

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Plans for a "massive" wall-mounted advert near Walworth Road have been submitted to Southwark Council.

The billboard, measuring 7.5 x 5.5 metres, will be located on the wall of 416 Albany Road near the southern entrance to Walworth Road and Camberwell Road.

This borders the Walworth Road conservation area, which was set up to preserve the character of the historic street.

The Walworth Society, a local heritage organisation, said they "strongly object" to the proposed billboard.

They described the planning application as "invalid", claiming it "lacked a Heritage Statement" assessing its impact on the local area.

"We object to the idea that this is a smallscale advertisement – in reality it covers a very large part of the south facing wall

of 416 Albany Road," their website reads.

"The proposal harms the Walworth Road Conservation Area owing to its location at the gateway to the Conservation Area and its extremely prominent location."

The planning application says that the visual impact of the billboard "is considered to be minimal."

"These types of small-scale poster sites play an important role in the delivery of community messaging and community support for the arts and culture and local businesses,” it added.

The building on which the billboard is planned was built between 1810 to 1812 and resembles the other buildings on Camberwell Road, which have listed status.

"The introduction of any images on the sidewall will have a detrimental effect both structurally and aesthetically," said the Walworth Society.

They continued: "There is documentary evidence that the Promenade was developed as one run of grand shops which are approaching double height and when

they opened, they were said to be as fine as any shops that you would encounter in the West End." The Walworth Society also claimed the billboard may constitute a danger to users of the busy B-road.

"This is a notoriously dangerous junction where there have previously been fatalities and we object strongly to any distraction that increases driver inattention – the application specifically refers to the target audience being drivers," read their website.

Walworth Road was declared a Conservation Area by Southwark Council in 2016.

This status was intended to "steer" council planning officers into picking designs that were more "sympathetic to Walworth's character when looking at applications for new developments in the area.

The planning application number is 22/ AP/0960.

Save Southwark's last ancient woodland

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A project to protect Southwark's last ancient woodland has been launched.

Hundreds of metres of pathway in Dulwich's Sydenham Hill Wood are set to be restored in a bid to protect its abundance of wildlife and plants.

London Wildlife Trust, who are behind the project, said soaring visitor numbers as a result of the 2020 lockdown had taken their toll on the woodland.

They saw restoring the wood's 300 metre-pathway as vital to help keep walkers away from sensitive ground flora and undisturbed areas on which wildlife, such as nesting birds and hedgehogs, rely.

The trust needs to raise at least £50,000 between 22 - 29 April to fund the protection of this special ten-hectare woodland near Norwood Ridge.

"Much loved by the local community, Sydenham Hill Wood is in need of your support," said Leah McNally, director of learning, youth and communities at the London Wildlife Trust.

"There has been a huge increase in visitors since the pandemic – we need your help to replace paths and to protect nature."

The Dulwich Society and The Big Give are both supporting this project.

Together they will match donations up to a total of £10,000, as part of the Big Give's Green Match Fund, which is a match funding campaign for charities working to tackle environmental issues.

"The Dulwich Society is delighted to support the London Wildlife Trust in their fundraising efforts and encourages local residents to get behind the team who keep the woods so beautiful for us all to enjoy," said James Thompson, chairman of the Dulwich Society.

added: "It's fantastic that so many more people are using Sydenham Hill Woods, but that can't come at a cost to its flora and fauna."

Since 2019, there has been an 81 per cent increase in the number of visitors to the woodland, according to the London Wildlife Trust. Improved footpaths will provide better access around the site and accommodate the growing numbers of visitors they say.

Recent restoration efforts on 150 metres of pathway in the wood cost £18,000.

Sydenham Hill Wood, which has been managed by the London Wildlife Trust since the 1980s, is the largest surviving tract of the ancient Great North Wood, which once stretched from Croydon to Deptford.

It is one of the closest ancient woodlands to central London, and is home to more than 200 species of trees and flowering plants.

Donations to preserve this natural rarity open at 12.00 p.m. on 22 April and close at 12.00 p.m. one week later on 29 April.

Part of a ground-floor shop on Camberwell Church Street was damaged by the blaze and flats on the upper floors were also affected by smoke.

Around ten people had evacuated the flats above the shop before the London Fire Brigade arrived to tackle the fire which broke out Wednesday morning (30 March).

There were no reports of any injuries.

The brigade said that the fire was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault within an extension lead that had been linked to multiple other extension leads.

Firefighters were first alerted to the blaze at 09:30 a.m. by a member of public, and was brought under control just after 10:00.

The shop fire led the brigade to issue a number of electrical safety tips.

"Overloaded sockets are one of the most common causes of electrical fires," said a spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade.

A Southwark man has been jailed after being caught with a gun, £100,000 worth of drugs, and stolen cars, writes Kit Heren...

Southwark Police announced on Twitter that Mohamed Belal, 26, from the SE16 area, was given twelve years in prison after police seized a converted Turkish 'Zoraki' pistol, seventeen bullets, more than 700 wraps of crack cocaine and heroin and stolen vehicles.

Blank-firing pistols can be converted into deadly weapons. The national crime agency (NCA) said in 2017 that the Zoraki guns, which are often imported via eastern Europe, are "an emerging trend in the London area."

15% of Southwark is blighted by fuel poverty

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Fifteen per cent of homes in Southwark are living in fuel poverty, a Labour party study has found.

Fuel poverty occurs when a household must spend more than 10 per cent of its income on energy

Approximately 20,000 households in the borough are struggling to keep their homes warm and well lit this year.

The findings come just one day before the government is set to lift the energy price cap, which will see energy costs surge by 54 per cent on average.

This crippling increase is likely to push people further to the brink in the coming months.

Yet fuel poverty in Southwark is around the average for London.

Boroughs Barking and Dagenham, Newham and Waltham Forest have the worse fuel poverty in the capital, with more than 20 per cent of households facing grim choices on whether or not to heat their homes.

The City of London, which is also one of the richest London boroughs, has the lowest amount of fuel poverty at around

6 per cent of households.

Fuel poverty occurs when a household must spend more than 10 per cent of its income on energy.

But the government recently broadened the definition to include homes where fuel costs are above the national average, and where meeting these costs pushes the household below the poverty line.

While most households across Southwark will feel the effects of April's energy price hike, those on low incomes will face more pain as they are typically reliant on pre-paid metres, which are more expensive than other alternative forms of energy.

Many factors are increasing fuel poverty in Southwark and the wider country.

The cost of energy is rising rapidly as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, meaning households need to spend more of their income paying fuel and electricity bills.

Many of Southwark's homes are also poorly insulated, which allows lots of heat to escape, and they have old and

inefficient heating systems.

To solve the crisis, Labour is calling for an immediate cut to VAT on energy bills and a windfall tax on energy companies, alongside an extension on the warm homes discount, which together could save households between £200 to £600 per year.

Oil giants BP and Shell are on course to make a combined profit of £40 billion this year.

The government has offered households a £200 loan to offset energy costs, which will be repayable over the course of five years.

"For months now, Londoners have been telling me agonising stories about the sacrifices they’ve been forced to make including deciding whether to cook a meal or whether to heat their home," said London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

"The story is the same up and down the country and the Government’s response? A dodgy loan that no one asked for. Labour has a comprehensive strategy to bring costs down and ensure our ongoing energy security through investment in renewables,” he added.

"This has been calming and uplifting for many people and has certainly improved personal wellbeing," they said.

NHS England has found that music can bring much physical and mental solace to elderly people, especially those with dementia.

It can help reduce anxiety and depression, maintain speech and language, is helpful at the end of life, enhances quality of life and has a positive impact on carers.

"Music lights up emotional memories.

Everyone remembers songs from their past, the first kiss, the song at a wedding [or] seeing their parents dance," the NHS England website reads.

In the planning application, consultants HGH, speaking on behalf of Tribe, claim the tower is needed as there is "a substantial deficit in the supply of student housing relative to the number of students living and studying in Southwark."

Both London South Bank University and the London College of Communication are a short walk from the proposed site. They wrote a letter in support of the development, which was attached to last week's application.

Avonmouth House operator etc. venues said the existing conference centre is "surplus to requirements."

They added that businesses and staff at the centre will be relocated to nearby Prospero House in Borough High Street.

"The proposed development, designed

by Stitch Architects, is of the highest quality and would deliver an exemplary design solution for this site," said HGH in the planning document. "The architecture is expressed as a group of elements of differing heights which relate to different orientations."

They continued: "It will form part of the emerging cluster at Elephant

& Castle and will represent an appropriate transition between the tallest elements located on Newington Causeway including Two Fifty One, 89 and 87 Newington Causeway, and the lower scale further north on Newington Causeway and to the south and east of the site.

"Its height will contribute to this emerging cluster that defines the gateway into the central area of Elephant & Castle."

HGH has worked on a number of major developments in Southwark, including the Leathams Building and Nyes Wharf.

Founded in 2020 by a team of veteran developers in the private housing sector, Tribe says it aims to ease the shortage of good quality affordable accommodation for London’s students. The company is currently progressing with five sites including this scheme.

In March, Tribe was provided with a £35 million loan to build a 250-unit student accommodation development in South Bermondsey.

Two-thirds of Southwark homes sold before being built

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk More than two-thirds of homes sold in Southwark last year were snapped up before developers had finished building them, research shows.

The survey by estate agents Hamptons shows that the borough had the third-highest rate of 'offplan' sales in the country - at 67 per cent - and the highest in London. Only the Cotswolds and Monmouthshire in Wales had higher rates.

Southwark's rate was well ahead of the average for England and Wales, which stood at 37 per cent.

But this was still the highest rate national rate in six years. Hamptons said the increase was because fewer homes were available on the market.

This also means that people looking to actually live in their homes - rather than people who

want to use them as an investment opportunity - are behind much of the growth in off-plan sales.

It comes after the News reported in March that the average price of a property in Southwark is about thirteen times the average salary of someone who lives in the borough.

David Fell, a senior analyst at Hamptons, said: "“The lack of second-hand homes available to buy has meant that owner-occupiers are increasingly turning to new builds, with more willing to buy offplan in the face of limited options on the market. Typically, these are chain-free homeowners who have more flexibility on moving dates.

"Despite this, owner-occupiers don’t buy as far in advance as investors who are often happy to wait a year or two, particularly when prices are rising. They’re also more likely to seek out bespoke, individually designed houses in smaller schemes, rather than flats in big city centre blocks."

The 233-room student accommodation will be located on Avonmouth Street, just off Newington Causeway at Elephant and Castle.

It will replace the existing Avonmouth House Conference Centre, which is behind the London Bridge Job Centre and neighbours Newington Gardens.

Developer Tribe have said the block will include 233 rooms for students, alongside offices and a new healthcare hub.

"I strongly object to this proposal," said one online commentator on the planning application. "Those of us living on the Western side of the Rockingham Estate are now being surrounded by high-rise buildings. The Travelodge Hotel allowed here is a complete eyesore.

"Natural light has already been greatly reduced over the past few years," they added.

Evelina appoints first dedicated nurse for rare covid condition

Evelina London Children's Hospital is among the first hospitals to hire a nurse dedicated to tackling a rare condition that affects kids that have had Covid-19, writes Kit Heren...

Doctors think PIMS-TS is a delayed reaction to the body trying to get over Covid, causing swelling throughout the body. There are only a very small number of children who get PIMS-TS, but they need hospital treatment. It needs to be caught early, but it can be successfully treated.

Evelina London was among the first in the world to report PIMS-TS as a new condition in April 2020, helping other countries to also successfully treat it.

Michael Bell was hired as the PIMSTS clinical nurse specialist at the end of 2021 and works with doctors and nurses to care for children in Evelina London with the condition, as well as their families.

He also runs a dedicated helpline which gives medical support and advice to parents of patients who have gone home from hospital, and runs clinics where patients see a range of experts in one setting for check-ups after their time in hospital.

Ten-year-old Rahul Chakravarty

became unwell with PIMS-TS last December. He was transferred to Evelina London by the South Thames Retrieval Service for specialist care after being diagnosed with the condition at his local hospital.

Rahul’s mother Sumita Chakravarty said: “By the time Rahul was diagnosed with PIMS-TS he was very ill. The doctors at our local hospital were concerned that he might have long term damage to his heart. They contacted doctors at Evelina London for advice and he was taken to the hospital’s paediatric intensive care unit. It was very traumatic seeing him there with so many IV lines connected to his body. He was otherwise a very healthy boy so the experience was very upsetting for us.”

Rahul spent nine days at Evelina London before going home to finish recovering.

Sumita said: “Once Rahul was back home it was very reassuring knowing that there was a dedicated helpline we could call to get medical advice.

Rahul developed knee pain after being in hospital and we called the helpline and Michael arranged an appointment with a physiotherapist which did wonders.

“The staff at Evelina London were absolutely wonderful and it’s fantastic

that they have a recognised pathway and a dedicated nurse to treat patients with this condition. I felt comfortable that the team knew what they were doing and Rahul was in very safe hands.

“Rahul thankfully has no long term complications. He gets tired very easily but he gets better every week and he has been able to return to school part time. His doctors have told us that most children are fully recovered by six months after their hospital treatment.”

Since the condition was discovered, Evelina London has treated almost 400 patients from across London and south east England.

the Blackfriars Settlement needs £10,000 to keep going A charity that helps look after elderly people and people with mental health problems is having to ask for money to keep going, after seeing its income plummet during the Covid-19 pandemic, writes Kit Heren...

Blackfriars Settlement, which supports people in the north of Southwark, is looking for £10,000 to keep its doors open and run projects like Sunday lunches for older people who live alone, singing for wellbeing, arts sessions and a women's group.

One visitor who goes to the lunches said the meals were: "Somewhere I

can go to when feeling lonely as I meet lots of new friends. I enjoy the company."

The singing for wellbeing groups are also popular. "It keeps me motivated," another visitor said.

"It’s a great form of exercise and socialising. And it brings me joy."

Meanwhile the arts sessions help people believe in themselves, a third visitor said. " I grew from those sessions by believing I could actually draw and be artistic. I also grew by meeting new friends and by discovering things about myself ."

Southwark's rising sports stars are being offered the opportunity to become 'Sporting Champions' and gain expert support as part of the sports talent development initiative.

The 'Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions Scheme' - now in its sixth year - has helped thousands of athletes unlock their sporting potential by providing free entry to leisure centres, as well as guidance from Olympic medalists.

Aspiring athletes will be able to apply for the scheme through the Everyone Active Sporting Champions website from the beginning of April.

Everyone Active's 200+ leisure centres can be found in Camberwell, Dulwich, Elephant and Castle, Peckham Pulse, Surrey Quays and beyond.

Several new Olympians and Paralympians are set to join the scheme who will use their experience and expertise to mentor successful applicants. Their identities are yet to be revealed.

GRAVE OF PIONEERING camberwell NURSE RESTORED Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The east London grave of a pioneering black nurse from Camberwell has been restored.

Southwark historian Stephen Bourne discovered the 'forgotten' grave of Annie Brewster, who died 120 years ago, in the City of London cemetery in Newham in 2019. At that time, it was overgrown and the large stone cross had fallen over.

Annie died in 1902 aged just 43. She was born on the Caribbean island of St Vincent in 1858 and settled in London with her family in the 1860s.

Her father was a wealthy merchant who was originally from Barbados and the Brewsters lived in Grove Vale, East Dulwich, before moving to Camberwell.

In 1881 Annie joined the nursing staff at the well-known London Hospital in Whitechapel in the east end of London.

Mr Bourne, author of several books on black British history, learned more about her in the hospital archives.

He said: “The first record, dated December 16, 1881, described her as a thoroughly satisfactory probationer.

She was a favourite with all the sisters under whom she worked. She was gentle and kind to her patients.”

In 1902 Annie died after an emergency operation. Matron Eva Luckes and the nursing staff were heartbroken.

Ms Luckes reported that Annie was known to all her hospital friends as ‘Nurse Ophthalmic’ because of her painstaking work with elderly patients who were going blind.

She said at the time: “She had spent the best and happiest years of her life at the London Hospital. She was with us for just over 20 years, nearly 14 of which had been spent as nurse in charge of the Ophthalmic Wards. With her quick intelligence she became very skilful in the treatment of ‘eyes’ and her kindness to the poor old people who passed through her hands during this period was unwearied. Hospital friends mourn her loss and keep her in affectionate remembrance.”

The restoration of Annie’s grave was paid for by the Company of Nurses.

Other people at the restoration ceremony on Tuesday, March 29, alongside Mr Bourne included members of the Royal British Nurses’ Association and Cenio E. Lewis, High Commissioner for St Vincent and The Grenadines.

Oldest surviving map showing Southwark to go on display

The Civitas Londinium, originally created in the 1570s, gives a birdseye view of the capital as it was at the time, stretching from Southwark in the south, up to Hampstead and Highgate in the north of the city.

There are three surviving prints of the map, all made in 1633. No one knows who originally made it, or why.

The Civitas Londinium is the centre of a new, free exhibition called Magnificent Maps of London at the London Metropolitan Archives in Clerkenwell, which starts next Monday, April 11.

Other exhibits include The Ruins of London, a survey commissioned by the City of London Corporation after the Great Fire of London tore through the city in 1666.

The corporation commissioned the survey in the week after the fire - which destroyed 13,000 houses as part of efforts to rebuild the city following the devastating blaze.

Other artefacts in the exhibition include Victorian maps showing the spread of deadly diseases like typhoid, cholera and smallpox.

The chair of the City of London Corporation’s culture, heritage and libraries committee, Wendy Hyde, said: “This new exhibition gives a unique and compelling insight into how London was literally put on the map.

“It charts this extraordinary city’s development through some of the tumultuous events that defined it, like the Great Fire.

“We are bringing the history of London to life for our visitors, unlocking imagination, creativity, and innovation.”

Afghan refugees have inflicted a crushing defeat on a Parliamentary team at a football match in Dulwich.

The Afghanistan Development Squad thrashed the Women's Parliamentary Team at Dulwich Hamlet's home ground last Tuesday week, March 29.

The team of Afghan girls and women played against a cross-party group of MPs including Tracey Crouch, Kim Leadbeater and Alison McGovern, winning four thrilling games in total.

The goal tally at Champion Hill reached double figures in one match, with the Afghans putting on a sterling display of footie.

The Afghan Development Team fled the Taliban last year on a flight sponsored by the reality TV star Kim Kardashian.

They faced persecution and death for playing football as women after the Taliban took over in September, arriving safely in the UK in November.

"The team is a long way from home, but the cheering atmosphere today was what they needed," said Khalida Popal, the squad's director.

"After a tumultuous journey to reach safety, there are still many obstacles they face. Football has a powerful way of bringing people together and is a crucial part of the team rebuilding their lives in the UK.” Tracey Crouch, captain of the losing

Parliamentary squad, added: “We knew we were playing against pros, and we were up for the challenge. We got to know the Afghan team on the pitch, and they are remarkable players. It’s an absolute pleasure to have them settled in the UK and we can’t wait to watch them grow as a team.”

The match, kickstarted by Amnesty, aimed to celebrate the contribution refugees can make to football and highlight women's rights issues in Afghanistan.

Girls in Afghanistan were recently banned from going to secondary school, drawing international condemnation.

It is part of Football Welcomes, an Amnesty International UK initiative to welcome refugees and people seeking asylum into UK communities through

football.

"This match goes to the very heart of what Football Welcomes is all about breaking down barriers and bringing people together from different walks of life," said Naomi Westland, head of the Amnesty initiative.

This year’s campaign – which is in its fifth year - comes during the biggest refugee crisis Europe has seen since the Second World War. "The refugee crisis in Ukraine shines a light on the importance of welcoming refugees wherever they're from, whether it’s Ukraine, Afghanistan, Eritrea or elsewhere," said Naomi.

"We hope as many football teams as possible get involved this year to welcome refugees and show just how important they are to our communities."

Walk in the footsteps of Ada Salter with Bermondsey and Rotherhithe tulip map

20,000 are now flowering

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey residents’ group has planted more than 20,000 tulips in the area, which are coming into flower now.

Greener Bermondsey has published a map showing where the tulips are planted, so anyone who is interested can navigate their way around the 53 patches in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. #ADA100 signs are also being put up at each site.

The local group was set up to celebrate the legacy of Ada Salter, the former socialist mayor of Bermondsey,

who was elected to her post in 1922 100 years ago this year.

Ada found a Bermondsey that was heavily polluted and launched the beautification committee to plant thousands of trees and 10,000 tulips in the local area, among many other initiatives.

This is the second year that Greener Bermondsey has planted the tulips, after a successful launch in 2021.

Both years J Parker Bulbs has donated 10,000 bulbs.

Walworth was home to the first ever sitcom broadcast on radio

The late great Mabel, aka Grandma Buggins

T

he British have always been known for their sense of humour and the ability to laugh at themselves. One way in which this manifests itself is our enduring affection for the family-based sitcom. Over the years, people have sat together and laughed at classics such as Till Death Do Us Part, Only Fools and Horses, The Royale Family and many others. Little do people know that arguably one of the first ever sitcoms broadcast on radio was based in Walworth and that the writer of The Bugginses had strong links to Southwark, writes Neil Crossfield...

Their creator was a gifted woman called Mabel Constanduros (née Tilling). She was born into a wealthy middle-class family in Peckham on March 29 1880, the granddaughter of Thomas Tilling, founder of the famous Tilling’s bus company. He had first set up business in Walworth in 1841, trading as a ‘jobmaster’. This was the Victorian equivalent of a car hire firm and Tilling would rent out horses and carriages from a small stable in Beckford Place. Tilling’s business expanded quickly and within a couple of years he was running a regular bus service into central London. When Tilling died in 1897 he owned around 4000 horses. Mabel’s grandmother was born in Walworth and so it is not unusual that she would have a close affection for the area as she grew up.

Mabel remembered going to visit her grandfather and she had real fondness for the people who worked for the company. Every year, Tilling’s would take many of its employees on a day trip out into the country, visiting places like Orpington, Epping Forest or the Welsh Harp Reservoir in Brent, and it is highly likely that Mabel may have gone along. In one of the Buggin’s stories, the incorrigible Grandma says “them buses of William Willing’s is comfortable, well-built affairs.” This is obviously a reference to her grandfather’s bus company, but in this case, the crafty Grandma is planning an insurance fraud on one of its buses by throwing herself downstairs to get compensation for her injuries.

Mabel’s upbringing was typical for a middle-class girl in late Victorian London. She attended St. Giles Church in Camberwell, was educated locally (including at Mary Datchelor’s school) and volunteered to help teach poor girls in Lambeth working for the NSPCC. She

married Athanasius Constanduros in 1906, though the union is not believed to have been a happy one. Throughout her childhood, she had been interested in acting and this continued into adulthood. She joined several south London amateur dramatic companies including the ‘Anomalies of Streatham’ and at the same time was attending the School of Drama, Speech Training and

Physical Education, based at the Royal Albert Hall, and run by the formidable Miss Elsie Fogerty. Her dedication and potential must have been noticed: when the BBC held auditions in 1925 for their new radio repertory company, Mabel was signed up, starting her professional acting career at the age of 45.

The First World War had seen rapid development in radio technology, as

wireless sets had been used on the battlefields, in the air and at sea. This scientific advance led to the formation of the BBC in 1922, as stronger transmitters meant that radio waves could reach into every household in the nation. It would have been an exciting place to work, as this was a totally new medium and the early staff of the BBC had to innovative in producing

radio shows which would appeal to a mass audience. Radio ownership grew massively during the inter-war period: in 1926 only around 25 per cent of the country had a radio licence but this had grown to around 80 per cent in 1937.

Mabel was an extremely talented actress, and her vocal talents were much in demand, though perhaps it was her scriptwriting skills which soon came to the fore, when she created the Buggins. The fictitious family were supposed to have lived at number 17 Halcyon Row in Walworth, though no such street exists. The heroine of the story is Emily Buggins, the mother of the family - the lynchpin who holds them together. She is hard working, caring and always looks on the bright side of life, even though it seems that her family constantly try to sabotage her happiness. She is married to Harry Buggins, who is lazy, feckless and a bit of a drinker. He would rather spend time with his pigeons than with his family.

The Buggins have three children: Alfie, Emily and Baby.

But the star of the show is undoubtably Grandma Buggins, Harry’s mother, who also lives in Halcyon Row. She is around 80 years old, greedy, selfish and has the ability to suck the joy out of any occasion in an instant. Many other inhabitants of the street featured in the shows, including Emily’s niece Ag and her boyfriend Bert. There were also other bit players like Mr Toovey, Soppy Arthur and the flirtatious blonde bombshell, Florrie Elwood. Most of the characters were voiced by Mabel herself and in one episode of the Buggins, she played seven different characters.

As a wealthy, middle-class woman, Mabel could be open to accusations that she was mocking the working classes. However, it would appear that she genuinely felt a strong affinity to the people she portrayed. She had family links to Walworth and wrote in the Radio Times that she and her cowriter Michael Hogan would sometimes spend the day around East Street market listening to the way people spoke. Though the radio shows were comedies, she also produced a series of books based on the Buggins, in which she alluded to the domestic violence, drunkenness and overcrowding which many of the working classes experienced in areas like Walworth.

Like the modern-day sitcom, the humorous element of the Buggins derived from them doing everyday things which would seem familiar to families sitting listening to their radios.

Daytrips out to the zoo or to Brighton could prove disastrous, however much Emily Buggins tried to get the family to enjoy themselves. Other show titles included The Buggins family Picnic, Father’s Lumbago, Father Sweeps the Chimney, Boat Race Day and Father Buys a Whale. In this episode, the family are on holiday in Norfolk and Harry spends the week’s holiday money on purchasing a dead whale which has washed up on the beach in the hope he can transport it back to London and

Little known to the general public, she is referred to as the ‘Mother of the BBC’ starting there in 1925 - but her finest hour was during World War II make a lot of money selling its oil. This, like most of the schemes Father gets involved in, fails miserably.

Mabel’s fame and popularity continued to grow throughout the 1930s. In December 1936 she took the ocean liner Normandie to New York where she embarked on a tour of the United States. During this trip, she visited Hollywood, Malibu Beach and Los Angeles, where she was entertained by some of the biggest stars of the time, including Ronald Coleman, Errol Flynn, P.G. Wodehouse and Shirley Temple.

Such was her fame at this time, she even featured on a set of cigarette cards produced by the Wills Tobacco Company, alongside Marlene Dietrich, Noel Coward and Gracie Fields.

Perhaps though, the Buggins and Mabel Constanduros’s finest hour was during the Second World War. On September 1 1939, two days before war was declared, she offered her services to the BBC in the hope that she could do her bit. The Kitchen Front was part of the Ministry of Information’s campaign to promote food economy. First broadcast in June 1940, the programme ran from Monday to Saturday and food experts would give housewives tips on how best to make use of their meagre rations, how to make ‘substitutes’ for common foods and how to use unrationed goods more sensibly.

Though at first listening figures were high, interest waned and in an effort to gain a larger audience, the Buggins were enlisted to help on the home front.

So from around October 1941, the Buggins had a regular Tuesday morning slot which continued right up until VE day in 1945. Though they had been included to provide light entertainment in the show, Constanduros didn’t want this just to be a rehash of her comedy acts, but rather wanted to give housewives useful, practical information which would help them manage in the kitchen. It should be noted that while this was the ‘peoples’ war’, with millions of women mobilised to help the war effort, whether they be in uniform or engaged in war work, women were still very much expected to be the ones carrying out the bulk of domestic duties around the house.

Several British propaganda films of the period, like for instance Millions Like Us or The Gentle Sex would proudly show groups of women from all classes working in munitions factories or operating anti-aircraft defences but would still reinforce the pre-war image of the dutiful wife or daughter carrying out their domestic duties.

The Buggins on the Kitchen Front would become extremely popular and by the end of the war, they would have featured in over 250 episodes.

While Constanduros would provide the scripts and perform, she was very careful to push the official Ministry of Information doctrine. Grandma

could be used as a medium to express the grumbles and dissatisfaction of the general public, but this could be countered by Emma Buggins arguing the government line. One episode of the Kitchen Front is available on the BBC website and gives a good idea of the type of content. A relative of Grandma is coming to visit and though she is obviously unwelcome, Grandma perks up when she hears she will be bringing her meat ration with her.

They decide to cook a ‘Connaught Pie’ together and Emily Buggins carefully goes through each step so that the listening housewives would have time to note down the recipe. Grandma gives her usual curmudgeonly input by noting that “water is the one thing they haven’t rationed.”

After the war, Mabel and her nephew and writing partner, Denis Constanduros, wrote the scripts for a successful British film series, based on another fictional working-class family, the Huggetts. Produced by the Gainsborough Film Studios, British film audiences flocked to the cinema to watch stars Jack Warner and Katherine Harrison play the role of Joe and Ethel Huggett. The first in the series, Holiday Camp, came out in 1947 and showed the family embarking on a trip to one of the new highly regimented holiday camps which had become popular after the war. The Huggetts films also gave a break to a young Diana Dors, as well as Petula Clark. Besides these films, Mabel also wrote novels and several successful plays, one of which, 29 Acacia Avenue, was turned into a film. Her acting skills were still in demand as she played the character of Earthy Mangold in the BBCs first radio adaptation of Worzel Gummidge in 1952.

The Buggins faded into obscurity, especially as television started to emerge as the primary domestic entertainment media, but Mabel continued to put forward proposals for programmes right up to her death in February 1957. Though she is little remembered today, her reputation has recently been reassessed and she is now regarded as one of the pioneering women at the BBC. The corporation celebrates its centenary this year and Mabel first joined its ranks in early 1925. Though the BBC would soon become part of the establishment, in its early years, it was a radical new venture. The majority of its staff were men, but Mabel’s talent and creativity shone through, and she was able to play a key role in the development of light entertainment in this country. Her biographer, Jennifer J Purcell, refers to her as the ‘Mother of the BBC’ and notes that apart from being one of the earliest radio comediennes, her influence had far reaching consequences on the genres of situation comedies and soap operas in Britain.

This is the first time that this experience has been offered at the Cutty Sark(named after a witch who was very fast at catching her prey), and it was an offer I couldn’t refuse.

My first job was to prepare for the climb.

I knew I wasn’t scared of heights, which is a necessary fear factor to overcome before attempting this task. I did, though, need to ensure that I didn’t get halfway up and realise that I lacked the stamina to continue, so early morning gym sessions on the stair machine gave me the last bit of confidence needed before I slipped into the gilet, helmet, and harness.

On arrival at the ship, I was taken down below to discuss all the security issues before being kitted up. My nerves were steady and my excitement was rising. Once I had the full gear on I was led up to the deck while getting a history of the Cutty Sark on the way. This was the coldest day of spring and it had actually snowed on my way there, so the wind chill hit me as soon as I stepped outside.

I was shown where I would be climbing from and where to - a platform way, way up - and then had to actually step out onto the outside of the vessel. Now it had got real.

There were certain ropes you could not step on and certain things you could not hold on to. I didn’t ask why, I just made sure I didn’t break those rules. I now discovered

I never thought I would ever be climbing up the side of the Cutty Sark - or up the side of anything to be honest at this time of my life - but now that the famous clipper has opened its rigging for potential sailors to ascend I was up there like Jack Sparrow being chased by Captain Barbossa and his crew of skeletons, writes Michael Holland.

that ropes are not steady and were swaying in the wind. Only slightly, and not a fraction as much as they would have been on the high seas when 14-year-old boys with no shoes scurried up and down this rigging, but its movement was a reality check for me. I counted my blessings and moved on.

All the recent training paid off as I made steady progress up. There was a continuous stream of advice and motivational support from both above and below: ‘Move your leg to the left… Hold the ratline on the right…

You’re doing well, keep going.’ I wasn’t afraid of looking up or down to see where these voices were coming from but I chose to remain focussed on where my hands and feet were going. I knew I was nearing my destination when the voices got closer.

‘Just a couple more steps,’ I heard, and very

soon I was standing on a small platform with two of the climbing crew.

They took some photos and I took some photos and then I was asked if I wanted to walk out to the end of the yardarm. It was bitterly cold and the wind was blowing hard and there didn’t seem to be much to hold on to or stand on out there, but how could I come this far and not have the full experience? And so I sidled along where so many less fortunate than I had once scuttled.

Yes, of course there was a safety line attached to me at all times, but I never thought about it because I reckoned it would only get me thinking that it might fail, so trod carefully all the time, making that climb as if my life was in my hands.

Descending was easy. I was lowered

down to the ground in the harness where it took a little while to get my land legs back again.

The climb was exhilarating; I can’t remember the last time I had such an adrenaline rush. Would I do it again?

Absolutely.

I know this experience is not for everyone but for those that want to feel really alive then this is for them.

The views from high up on the mizzenmast are spectacular. The Bucket Listability of doing this is fantastic.

The sin of killing the innocent

Does Rafe Spall get better and better or is it just that I have come to appreciate his work more and more?

That’s a mere bagatelle for readers because the important thing here is the performance everyone gives in Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird, writes Michael Holland.

Harper Lee’s classic anti-racism book, seen through the eyes of Scout Finch (Gwyneth Keyworth), the young, innocent white girl, has been given a different twist by Sorkin;

we now come to the tale of Tom Robinson(Jude Owusu), maliciously fitted up for rape by a paedophile father and a racist society in 1930s Alabama, through the eyes of all the main players and with all the children and the black characters having more of a voice than the book gave them.

Atticus Finch (Spall) is a good man with high Christian morals, so can see only good in people, much to the annoyance of his children, Scout and Jem (Harry Redding), who see the badness that is all around despite their father’s teachings. Atticus is

a lawyer who is adept at defending local farmers with land disputes but his last two criminal cases ended in two hangings, so not best suited to defend Tom Robinson. Alas, Atticus is all this poor man can afford.

The court drama is played out from the start with the sordid backstory of the small Southern town of Maycombe told intermittently in flashback by Scout and Jem, with their friend Dill (David Moorst) - Jem here given the inquiring voice who asks the questions that the audience want to scream out at the meek and mild Atticus. And all the while Calpurnia, the black maid who has been with the Finches forever, is there on the periphery watching and listening until the saccharine niceness of Atticus finally gets to her and she gives him a few home truths about what’s wrong in showing everyone respect.

The young Finches were supposed to offer a glimmer of hope, though 60 years on from the book’s publication

there has been little change for the black population. Jude Owusu’s quietly dignified depiction of a man who knew his fate as soon as the police turned up mirrors the America of today.

The ending, after the trial, goes on a little too long, and the scene where the Finch family face up to a lynch mob is far from believable, especially when lynching as a hate crime has only this week been made a crime in the U.S, but neither detract from this wonderful piece of work.

The play is sprinkled with comic, witty lines that lighten the mood, and director Bartlett Sher has pulled excellent performances from everyone in the cast. And, yes, Spall is fantastic in this.

Marie lloyd stole my life in music hall scandal

“Imagine being Dolly Parton and hearing that people think Whitney Houston’s was the original version of I Will Always Love You.”

“And now imagine that scenario playing out 150 years ago and not even having a recording of the original.

That’s what happened to Nelly Power, one of the biggest stars of her era, who was eclipsed by the younger, more brazen Marie Lloyd. Miss Lloyd sang Nelly’s song The Boy I Love is Up in the Gallery and went on to become ‘Queen of the Music Hall’ while Nelly died penniless and is now all but forgotten.

Nelly in her prime though was a real force to be reckoned with, living a life much more dramatic offstage than on. Changing constituencies will not help voter turnout - it’s likely to do the opposite

C

hanges to the boundaries of MPs constituencies will do little to engage a public that is already not participating in the local political scene as much as it should be.

Southwark is currently covered by three parliamentary constituencies: Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Peckham and Camberwell and Dulwich and West Norwood.

The new constituencies would be Bermondsey and Borough, Peckham, Dulwich and Sydenham, and Vauxhall and Camberwell.

As this paper reported last week, we are currently running a pilot scheme to encourage greater voter turnout in the upcoming May local elections. In the one ward that we are concentrating on Newington in Walworth - the amount of people not voting is as high as 70 per cent. Many of them do not know who their local councillors are. More people are aware of their local MP, but by changing the boundaries there is a real fear that many more will become more confused and so even more disengaged.

Indeed to have a new constituency in the south of Dulwich and Sydenham going from Herne Hill all the way down to Beckenham in the south east will feel alien to many in that part of our borough.

And once more the people of Walworth would not be united, but would instead now be carved up into three separate constituencies. The whole thing is very confusing, even for those with a good political knowledge.

Both the former long-standing Liberal Democrat MP for the current Old Southwark and Bermondsey constituency, Sir Simon Hughes, and the current MP for the area, Labour’s Neil Coyle, are against the changes, so it would appear that neither of the two main parties is going to gain any political advantage from this.

While the current set up does include one constituency in the south of the borough that takes in both Lambeth and Southwark councils, the proposed changes would see our MPs having to work on more cross-borough areas. It is indeed far more logical for the local MP to be dealing with one council when possible. The changes are to do with population calculations, but it is not so significant that we should risk confusion and less effective engagement from both the MPs and the electorate.

People by and large identify politics at a local level with the services they rely on - so on a council to council basis. Further blurring the line between council politics and Westminster will only serve to make people more disengaged from the political process.

Member Allowances Schemes: 1 April 2021 – 31 March 2022 and 1 April 2022 – 31 March 2023 In accordance with the Local Authorities (Members’ Allowances) (England) Regulations 2003, Southwark Council is publishing details of the allowances to be paid to members for the financial years of 1 April 2021 – 31 March 2022 and 1 April 2022 – 31 March 2023.

The 2021-22 member allowances scheme was agreed at council assembly on 24 March 2021, with the 2022-23 scheme agreed at council assembly on 23 March 2022. The schemes were agreed having taken into account the London Councils Independent Remuneration Panel Report 2018. The schemes make provision for a basic allowance to be paid to all members, and for special responsibility allowances (SRAs) to be paid to members who take on significant additional responsibilities. Member allowances are adjusted in line with the national local government officer pay settlement and allowances for officers. The allowances are grouped into bands, and the amounts for each band are set out in Table 1 below. The amounts listed are gross figures and are subject to deductions for national insurance contributions and income tax.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that under Section 15(4) of the Greater London Council (General Powers) Act 1974, have resolved that vehicles (being electric scooters, a.k.a. e-scooters used in a trial) which are parked on the footway and wholly within the areas delineated by white lines, on the footway at the locations identified below, shall be exempt from Section 15(1) of the said Act which makes it an offence to park on the footway. The resolution shall take effect from 7 April 2022. E-scooter parking places are designated at the following locations:-

Band 3 and 4 allowances are dependent on the number of hours per week the member is employed elsewhere, as set out below: - less than 11 hours elsewhere, full SRA - 11 to 24 hours elsewhere, two thirds SRA - more than 24 hours elsewhere, one third SRA. Where cabinet members are appointed in a job share, the average number of hours employed elsewhere are doubled.

The scheme allows members to claim travelling and subsistence allowances when on council business outside the borough, and childcare and carers’ allowance against any costs they incur in arranging care to look after dependants who cannot be left by themselves by reason of age or special needs. These allowances may only be claimed in respect of approved duties.

At present a pension scheme for members is not in operation.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FANS AT St Paul’s were treated to rip-roaring entertainment as Fisher drew 3-3 against Hollands & Blair last weekend.

The Fish came from two goals down after 23 minutes to lead 3-2 with two minutes left before the visitors equalised to disappoint the majority of the 152 attendance in Rotherhithe.

Jack Simons opened the scoring for the away side just five minutes in before Ben Brown doubled the lead.

Julio Da Mata got one back for Ajay Ashanike’s side two minutes before half-time.

The turnaround was completed when Manny Shoderu put his side ahead for the first time with 20 minutes left five minutes after Isaac Thompson’s penalty.

But there was one last piece of drama as Brown got his second from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.

Substitute Michael Sarpong almost scored an injury-time winner but fired over after the ball had dropped to him from a corner.

The Fish were in action against Tunbridge Wells in midweek trying to improve on their fifteenth place in the SCEFL Premier Division table.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET couldn’t find a way to break down a Bath City side that played most of the game with ten men in their 0-0 draw at Twerton Park last weekend.

Gavin Rose’s side dropped out of the top seven after Bath held on following the dismissal of Jack Batten in the fourteenth minute for a professional foul.

Ibra Sekajja and Chike Kandi had early efforts for the visitors before Dulwich goalkeeper Charlie Grainger tipped over Ryan Jones’ drive from outside the box.

The Hamlet were handed what should have been a decisive advantage when Sekajja was pulled down by Batten five yards outside the penalty area and was sent off.

Ronnie Vint set up Danny Mills with a cross but Ryan Clarke saved.

Vint shot over a half an hour in.

Tyrone Sterling was next to threaten for the visitors but headed Giovanni McGregor’s corner wide three minutes before half-time.

Two minutes later, McGregor fired over from Kandi’s pass inside the box.

The one-way traffic continued after the break as Sanchez Ming crossed for Mills but his header was easily saved

by Clarke.

Bath, though, still posed a threat.

Jones almost took advantage after Andre Blackman was robbed of possession and the hosts thought they should have had a penalty when the Bath player appeared to be taken down after a mazy run, but play was waved on.

Clarke tipped over Mills’ header from McGregor delivery and the move

was repeated shortly afterwards but this time the Dulwich striker headed wide.

Rose sent on attackers Reise Allassani and Darren McQueen as the away side tried in vain to break down the hosts’ organised defence.

Despite having to defend stoutly and often, Bath did have opportunities.

Omar Holness tried to lob Grainger from 35 yards but his aim was just off.

David Sims-Burgess also had a chance when his header from a corner was blocked.

In fact it was the home side that had the best chances to win it late on.

Cody Cooke found Alex Fletcher in the box but Grainger saved.

And Grainger saved his side right at the end when he came quickly off his line to save at the feet of Cooke who was through on goal from a long ball.

Dulwich are a point behind

Hungerford Town who have a point more having played a game less. Just five points separate Hungerford in seventh to Hemel Hempstead Town in twelfth in an intense play-off race.

With Oxford City in sixth seven points head of Hungerford and the top twelve only having either six or seven games left, it appears there is just one more play-off place to fight for.

Dulwich are back at Champion Hill this Saturday for a crucial game when they can drag Oxford back into the scrap by claiming three points against them. Kick-off is 3pm.

Dan Parkinson’s penalty in the 23rd minute gave the Stans their sixth win in a row as they made it nine games unbeaten.

Stansfeld followed up their 1-0 victory at Chessington & Hook two days earlier to register their sixth successive victory away from home.

Second-place Sutton Athletic could only draw 0-0 at home against Larkfield and New Hythe.

Stansfeld host Lydd Town this Saturday. Kick-off at Foxbury Avenue is 3pm.

Bermondsey’s Kongo, 29, got back to winning ways when he defeated Kelvin Dotel at Wembley Arena last month.

Albanian Marku, also 29, is 110-1 after his fourth-round knockout of Chris Jenkins – conqueror of Johnny Garton in 2019 – last weekend.

Kongo is aiming to get into world title contention.

“I’ve never avoided anyone,” Kongo said. “If you look at my career, I had sixteen months out and I fought a champion in the top ten, Luther Clay.

“I knocked him out. I was so rusty those first four rounds. I didn’t even get my head right those first four rounds, but I still managed to knock him out.

“I came back again and I fought [Michael] McKinson. Nobody wanted to fight McKinson but I got in there. I took the risk and I lost, but it is what it is.

“I moved on and now I’m back.

I fought this guy Kelvin Dotel and look what I did to him.

“I’m the one being most-avoided in the division. I will fight him next.

“You’re only as good as your last performance. You could see with my performance, I was in control the whole way.

Bermondsey father and son take on country’s best Duo compete against England internationals

By Sport Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk BERMONDSEY FATHER and son Lorestas and Larry Trumpauskas took on the best in the country as they competed at the Mark Bates Ltd National Championships at the end of last month.

Lorestas, 52, qualified for the Table Tennis England event by virtue of his top-16 position in the national rankings, while 14-year-old Larry came through the qualifying tournament earlier in the year.

They took their place in the group stage of the men’s singles, where Larry was defeated 3-0 (11-6, 11-7, 11-7) by England youth squad player Krish Chotai and 3-1 (11-9, 11-6, 1113, 11-4) by the powerful 22-year-

old, Gabriel Achampong.

Lorestas lost his first match 3-1 (11-6, 5-11, 11-6, 11-6) to another England junior, Joseph Hunter, but won his second match 3-2 (9-11, 116, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8) against Naphong Boonyaprapa to finish second in the group.

Two late withdrawals through injury meant two ‘lucky loser’ positions were available in the last 16, and Lorestas’ name came out of the hat. He took on second seed Tom Jarvis, who won 4-0 (11-8, 11-5, 114, 11-5), on his way to winning the gold medal.

Lorestas also played alongside Fusion TTC colleague Josh Bruce in the men’s doubles, but the pair were edged out 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8, 12-10) in the last sixteen by Graeme Barella and Ben Piggott.

The Lionesses went ahead in the fifteenth minute of the semi-final through Alyssa Miranda.

Lionesses goalkeeper Serena Hand preserved that lead with a brilliant save in the last minute of the first half.

Hand was called into action again in the 64th minute as she produced a heroic double-stop.

But Hand couldn’t prevent the Darts getting level two minutes later

Duo rack up centuries

By Alex Grace at Kenilworth Road sport@southwarknews.co.uk TRIPS TO Kenilworth Road always seem to be filled with drama for Millwall. This was the third consecutive visit to LU4 when the final ten minutes have been packed with action.

The meeting in 2019 had a late equaliser for the hosts in what turned out to be Neil Harris’ final game in charge. Last season, it was Millwall’s turn to provide the late show with George Evans’ stoppage-time equaliser denying Nathan Jones’s side all three points.

This time it was the home side that needed another late leveller here to deny Gary Rowett and Millwall what would have been three valuable points in the play-off chase.

Tom Bradshaw and Benik Afobe marked their returns to the starting eleven with goals. It was a momentous day for the Millwall front pairing as both found the net for the 100th time in their professional careers.

Both players would have been pleased with the goals that sealed their centuries.

Bradshaw’s strike took most, including the striker himself, by surprise. Jed Wallace’s pass sat up perfectly the Welshman, who struck it early from outside the box, which deceived Luton goalkeeper James Shea.

It was Bradshaw’s eighth goal in his last nine league starts. The former Barnsley man has picked up from where he left off before his injury in January. Should he be able to maintain that form for the rest of the run-in, then the Lions have a real chance of upsetting the teams ahead of them.

Equally crucial for Millwall is to have Afobe on form. The on-loan Stoke forward could not play against his parent club before the international break, and his absence was very noticeable. He was another that returned with a bang at Luton. His one-touch finish from Olivier Burke’s cross was a delight to watch.

Indeed, seeing Burke on the pitch was another plus. The Lions have been so unlucky with injuries this term. January arrival Burke has been limited to just a handful of appearances.

The youngster has had an impressive season since scoring his first professional goal in this fixture last season.

Jones’s side have made their home turf a tough place to go, and they should have been in front just after the break. Harry Cornick, who terrorised the Lions’ defence with two goals in the earlier meeting of

the sides in October, beat Jake Cooper for pace but was denied by a superb stop from Bartosz Bialkowski.

The home faithful were roaring their side on but were stunned with nine minutes left as Afobe found the net after a stunning Millwall breakaway led by Jed Wallace who found Burke.

But if you want to get into the playoffs, you need to show resilience, and the never-say-die mindset of the Hatters

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ISAAC OLAOFE and Sutton United were seconds away from winning the EFL Trophy last Sunday before Rotherham struck in the sixth minute of injury-time and then won 4-2 after extra-time.

In front of an attendance of more than 30,000 at Wembley, goals from Donovan Wilson and U’s captain Craig Eastmond either side of Ben Wiles’s equaliser looked like they would be enough to give Matt Gray’s League Two underdogs victory over the side who were top of League One going into the game.

Millers boss Paul Warne admitted he was getting ready to congratulate Gray but Jordi Osei-Tutu scored in the 96th minute to deny Sutton.

Chiedozie Ogbene scored six minutes into the extra period and Michael Ihiekwe – assisted by former Lion Shane Ferguson – added the clinching fourth in the 112th minute.

Millwall forward Olaofe had come on in the 62nd minute.

“I am gutted because we’re whiskers away from a great performance and walking up those steps as winners,” Gray said.

“Unfortunately we just couldn’t see it out for those last few moments.

“I’m gutted for everyone, the players

more than anybody, for the shifts and hard work they put in and obviously for the supporters and the board for being that close.

“I felt extra time was just a little step too far for us. Full credit to Rotherham and Paul Warne and I congratulate them all.

Striker has strong belief

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BENIK AFOBE knows Millwall are outsiders for the play-offs – but the forward believes the Lions have the players to achieve it.

Afobe is one of a number of players in the squad who have experienced the pressure of a top-six challenge to reach the end-of-season shoot-out.

Millwall are still longer odds than most current challengers to make the play-offs in the second tier for the first time in 20 years.

For the Lions, a top-half or a top ten finish would mean they have out-

performed expectations based on their bottom-half budget.

But Afobe feels they can do even better than that.

“No one [outside the club] is expecting us to finish in the top six,” Afobe said. “But we’ve got the players.

We beat Sheffield United, we beat Huddersfield – we beat QPR, all these teams that are fighting for the playoffs.

“We can go toe-to-toe with them. On our day we believe that we can beat anyone in the league. It’s just about having that consistency in the last few games.”

“I think we probably had the better chances in the game but Swansea have taken theirs and we haven’t managed to convert ours. That’s the difference. When we were having our really good run we were taking our chances and set-pieces, 1-0 here and there.

“Whereas the last couple of games things haven’t quite gone our way anwd we haven’t got the rub of the green.

“But that’s football.”

The Lions were already long shots for the play-offs but realistically now need to win all their remaining games.

Relegation-threatened Barnsley visit The Den this Saturday.

“We definitely believe in or ability as a team,” Mitchell said. “Never a truer word has been spoken about taking one game at a time, particularly in the position we’re in at the moment.

“Our last three results haven’t been particularly great but I’ve got faith in the squad that we can turn things around.

“The fixtures do fall in our favour in terms of their position in the league so we’ve got to make the most of that.

“With the position Barnsley are in they’re obviously desperate, they’re fighting for survival and they’re going to need to probably bring the game to us.

“Perhaps that means we may be able to exploit them if they do get a little bit too open chasing the game.

“Likewise I don’t think we can think too far ahead. We’ve got to do our analysis on them and see what the manager puts to us tactics-wise.

“Of course you look at the table but you try not to look too far ahead.

You’ve got to take one game at a time. We’ve got some very winnable games coming up and that’s what we’ll be focusing on.

“As for the final outcome towards the end of the season, we’re not too fussed about that at the moment.”

Mitchell has started Millwall’s last 28 games, a remarkable statistic for a player who turns just 21 today.

“Barring tonight obviously it’s been a really enjoyable season so far for me personally,” Mitchell said. “For me to be able to have that many games back-to-back is really nice, it shows the manager has faith in me and I hope over the course of the season I’ve repaid that.

“I’m still learning my trade. I’m really enjoying having a great number of games in front of these home fans and showing them what I’m about.

“Hopefully I can continue to improve and improve even more next season.”

Millwall fans will return to The Den on Saturday knowing their side must win.

Mitchell added: “Inevitably they were frustrated tonight, but rest assured we will be giving our all for every remaining game of the season.

“I think that’s all that they can ask.”

At the time of writing, the Lions were just four points outside the top six. However, Middlesbrough (two) and Nottingham Forest (three) have games in hand, and although victories are not guaranteed, the puzzle is still looking very difficult for Millwall to complete.

Talking of tough things to crack, that is precisely what Russell Martin’s side proved to be for Millwall this season. The Lions failed to score against the Swans this term – after the 0-0 draw in Wales last September – and the visitors’ intense interpretation of

keep-ball only made the task harder.

They amassed 68 per cent possession over the 90 minutes on Tuesday and completed a whopping 626 passes, compared to 226 for Millwall.

It was never a great spectacle. Swansea, for the most part, hogged the ball, but they had weak points that Millwall tried to exploit. On three separate occasions in the first half, the Lions forced corners after their pressure had created loose passes.

However, from the moment they took the lead, Swansea’s management of the game was impressive.

Despite their lack of time on the ball, you could argue that Millwall had the better chances.

Gary Rowett’s men started the brighter of the two sides, knowing that a win was vital in their pursuit of the top six. They began on the front foot. Daniel Ballard powered a header over after Scott Malone drifted in a corner inside the opening five minutes of the contest.

The difference between Millwall and many sides in this division is spending power and the players that can be attracted.

Ireland international Michael Obafemi was a summer loan signing from Premier League Southampton and has found the net nine times in 25 league appearances

this season.

Obafemi should have added to that tally at The Den. He was denied by a superb save from Millwall’s Bartosz Bialkowski, the big goalkeeper sticking out an arm to divert the point-blank effort over the bar. That gave the visitors some confidence, and the chances began to come for them on a more regular basis. Just a few minutes before, Obafemi was the target of Joel Piroe’s terrific ball that deceived the Lions’ backline but his end product was missing.

Jay Fulton was the next to test the Millwall keeper. His effort from the edge of the box was parried behind for a corner that the Lions managed to clear without too much fuss.

It took until the 41st minute for Millwall to create another meaningful chance. Jed Wallace’s curling effort was deflected just wide of the right-hand post by the Swansea defence.

At the other end of the pitch, there was another chance for Swansea, Piroe firing over the bar from just outside the box as the half came to a close.

This was a game, especially given the way Swansea play, in which if felt the first goal could be decisive. And it was the visitors who struck inside the first 60 seconds of the restart.

Swansea’s ability to manage the game was impeccable. This is where the style that Martin has implemented works so well. Keeping the ball and passing it around tires and frustrates not just the opposition but also the crowd. And it worked.

It’s not just how they keep the ball, either, but the drive and effort to win it back. It seemed as if every time the Lions managed to win possession back, they were quickly turned over again. The restless home support were sensing this was not going to be their night. Millwall just couldn’t get close enough to their opponents for much of the time.

Having said that, the ratio of good chances created to the little possession the Lions had was relatively high. Murray Wallace headed wide from a Malone freekick and George Saville and Benik Afobe also wasted great opportunities to bring the home side back on level terms.

other side, Murray Wallace had another half-chance but the ball bounced off him and went wide of the far post.

As Millwall’s challenge faded away, Afobe had a header that sailed over the bar in stoppage-time.

The last three games have been challenging for Millwall. They really needed at least three points from their two games since the international break.

There are six games left, and while it is still possible to nab a play-off place they will keep going, knowing the unpredictability of this league can throw up plenty of surprises.

There is a glimmer for Millwall. Five of their remaining six games are against teams thirteenth or lower in the table.

All they can do now is to win all of those games and put pressure on the teams above. If any of them falter, Millwall need to be ready to take advantage.

Only a fool would predict the final outcome of the Championship table. Still, anything less than fifteen points from the last six games will probably mean the Lions are forced to settle for another Championship campaign.

But a third successive top-half finish should not be viewed as an underachievement.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIKELY have to win their last three home games to give themselves a realistic chance of finishing in the play-offs.

On paper, it should be nine points against Barnsley, Hull City and Peterborough United.

The latter two, though, ripped up the scripts when they won 2-1 against the Lions in the reverse fixtures this season.

Hull look safe with an twelve-point gap over the bottom three before the midweek games. But Barnsley and Peterborough are in deep relegation trouble and desperately need wins.

The Tykes have been difficult opponents for Millwall in recent seasons. The Lions haven’t beaten the Yorkshire side in a league game at The Den since November 2013, losing three and drawing one since.

Their only victory over Barnsley in their last five meetings in SE16 was 4-1 in the third round of the FA Cup in 2018.

Barnsley are also a better side than when Murray Wallace’s 89th-minute header gave Gary Rowett’s visitors a 1-0 victory at Oakwell last October.

They won just two of their first 29 league games this season, and there was little indication that sacking Markus Schopp and appointing the little-known Poya Asbaghi would make much difference in their fight to avoid relegation.

“I thought first half was difficult for us. When we pressed, sometimes you have to take that gamble. They play round it quite well, they are a good side in possession and they are good at what they do.

“I think they have started to see a little bit more consistency in their game.

“I nearly made the changes at halftime. I felt one or two looked a bit leggy after the weekend which was disappointing. I felt we had a bit more zip about our play but it’s a really poor goal to concede just after half-time.

“For the last half hour it was all us.

It was us creating the chances but we have got to do better. We couldn’t find that cutting edge at this stage of the season, when you have to find it.”

“That was every bit as good as Saturday [in the win over Cardiff] in a very different way. The emotional energy that was exerted on Saturday took a lot out of the guys and they also enjoyed the win, which they should have done.

“At times there was some beautiful football. They were so brave against a team who are in such good form and fighting to get to the play-offs.

“I said to Gilly [assistant Matt Gill] on the sideline, I just feel so grateful for what they are doing, what they are buying into and how brave they are being.

“We have finally moved up a little bit in the table. We are in good form. We have kept three clean sheets in a row, we are unbeaten in four. We are very much a work-in-progress but the boys are really growing.”

Asbaghi had managed Swedish topflight side IFK Göteborg and the Sweden under-21s, but didn’t win a game in his first three months in his first job in English football.

When Barnsley lost 2-1 at Luton Town in February they were bottom of the table, eight points off safety having played a game more than Reading in 21st. Before the midweek fixtures (Reading were hosting Stoke), the Tykes were five points off the Royals with the same number of games played after four wins and three draws in their previous ten fixtures.

Barnsley will be scrapping for their lives this Saturday, but perhaps that is a better scenario than facing the unpredictability of a side with little to play for. Rowett’s team experienced that when their playoff hopes were ended on the second-last day of the 2019-20 season when they lost 4-3 to QPR, who couldn’t get promoted or relegated.

The onus will be on Millwall to take the game to Barnsley and give the home fans something to get behind. The big games take care of themselves, this is the type of fixture when the players need to light the touch paper.

But Barnsley have shown recently they can fight fire with fire. It is set to be a tense day at The Den with two teams fighting for very different objectives.

A number of the current squad have successfully dealt with the pressure of a top-six challenge to reach the play-offs.

Shaun Hutchinson, Jake Cooper and Jed Wallace were in the squad that won the League One play-off final in 2017.

There is play-off experience throughout the squad, either in semifinals or finals, including Bartosz Bialkowski (Ipswich Town), George Long (Sheffield United), Daniel Ballard (Blackpool), Scott Malone (Fulham and Derby County), Mason Bennett and George Evans (Derby), Murray Wallace (Scunthorpe), Alex Pearce (Reading), Benik Afobe (Huddersfield Town), Luke Freeman (Stevenage) and Ryan Leonard (Southend).

Millwall are still in the race for the top six though are considered outsiders.

Rowett knows those previous experiences are no guarantees the side can take the couple of extra steps forward after eighth-place finishes in 2017-18 and 2019-20.

But he explained how those players can influence the squad.

“There’s as much importance in what the players do on the pitch as what they do every day,” Rowett said. “It’s the energy to drive the other players every day to make sure that from a players’ perspective the standards are high. To make sure we recognise what we’re good at and how we win games.

“I think those senior players have stepped up. The likes of Jed, he’s stepped

up as a leader in the group and since he’s come back from injury it’s been tangible how much influence he’s had on and off the pitch, amongst others.

“They’ve got to keep doing that.

Younger players always look to the senior players as well as the management team.

We drive it, the senior players drive it and that’s what our club and team’s about.

“So yes it’s vitally important, but I don’t necessarily think the experience of being in there [before] helps make it any easier.

But you know what it looks like and you know what it feels like and that can help guide some of the other players that haven’t been in that position.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BILLY MITCHELL said he had “faith” Millwall could turn around their form after their winless run stretched to three games with their 1-0 defeat to Swansea City at The Den on Tuesday night.

Joel Piroe scored the only goal of the game a minute into the second half.

It meant that Millwall stayed four points off sixth place before Wednesday’s games with just six games left to make up a lot of ground.

“Frustrating game, considering the position we’re in and what’s on the line. I think it was just a frustrating performance,” Mitchell told the News.

“Fair play to Swansea, they move the ball

really, really well. First half we struggled to get near them.

“Second half, slightly better. We put them under more pressure higher up the pitch and probably created the better chances second half.

“But I think their goal early in the second half was just a bit of a sucker punch. It was bad timing. Probably a little bit of misfortune, I think the ball ricocheted off Muzza [Murray Wallace] which is not really his fault.

“It’s one of those things, we’ve got to pick ourselves up and move on again to Saturday.

“It is difficult [to have so little possession] and fair play to Swansea. Obviously they’ve been coached really well to do what they do with aplomb.

“But there’s no doubt that we could have got tighter in certain areas of the pitch...
