Both Labour and the Liberal Democrats published their policy programmes for Southwark ahead of the upcoming local elections on 5 May. Southwark Labour, who currently lead the council, launched their "fairer, greener, safer" plan for the borough last week. It contained a number of promises to boost employment, They vowed to: • Launch a £2 million anti-social behaviour task force • Upgrade street and estate lighting • Campaign to reverse damaging police cuts • End youth violence

rotherhithe takes to the street in support of vimal

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk around 100 people took to the streets on Saturday (March 26) in support of Vimal Pandya, the Rotherhithe resident threatened with being deported despite being thanked by the Queen for supporting the community in lockdown.

The demonstration in Rotherhithe was joined by local MP Neil Coyle, who spoke out in support of Mr Pandya, who is currently appealing a Home Office decision to send him back to India after more than eleven years in the UK. Coyle said: "There’s brilliant community support and I think it stands in a massive contrast to have the Royal Family, the Queen, thanking you Vimal for your support during a time of crisis and the government saying ‘not good enough’, somehow, for this community.

"It’s a disgusting, despicable situation for the Home Office to be in. Let’s hope we have V for Victory and we win the case against the Home Office as soon as

possible."

Many of the people at the demonstration came up to Mr Pandya to thank him for his efforts. He worked for years at Halai General Stores off Rotherhithe Street until he was barred from having a job with the Home Office.

Mr Pandya went through a series of complicated and expensive setbacks with the Home Office in the years after arriving in the UK on a student visa in 2011. He has been living in the UK without permission since 2015 but has become a hugely important part of his local community in Rotherhithe, helping out dozens of vulnerable families in the pandemic and getting a letter of thanks on behalf of the Queen for his efforts.

So far more than 130,000 people have signed on a petition calling on the government to let him stay and a fundraiser organised to help him with his legal costs has raised over £13,000.

Speaking at the demonstration on Saturday, Mr Pandya said: "I'm very emotional but happy to see all this support. It's been difficult [not being able to work] but I am so grateful to everyone that has helped me."

With funding from Southwark Council’s ‘Great Estates’ programme, the Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (TRA) is proposing the construction of a ‘parklet’ - an idea that emerged in San Francisco in 2005 as a way of improving underused urban spaces.

It would act as the street’s social centrepiece - somewhere local residents can meet with friends, sip a coffee or read a book.

Tom Lloyd, chair of the Brandon 1 Tenants’ and Residents’ Association. said: “The Maddock Way shopping parade is at the heart of the Brandon estate, and the improvement of that area is essential to the regeneration of the whole estate.

“We really want to thank David Suen and his team for having the vision to work with us, and consult with residents, and work up some great ideas like public art, shipping container box-park ideas and maybe hosting an occasional market.

“For too long the space has been neglected by Southwark, but we feel that

On Monday March 21, a drop-in session was held at the Jack Hobbs Centre, with residents invited to discuss and consider different parklet prototypes.

A disused shipping container that already sits outside the Jack Hobbs centre could be used for a parklet, with windows cut out to create a light and airy space.

The TRA is also pushing to bring Maddock Way’s abandoned retail units back into use. They have contacted

Southwark Property Services, who let the retail units, to find out why the one next to the pharmacy isn’t being used.

The council said that problems marketing the unit as well as Covid-19 complications had made it difficult to lease the shop.

The original design of the Brandon Estate envisioned a bustling retail parade acting as an integral part of the estate.

Originally, there was a post office, butchers, convenience store, pharmacy, doctors, greengrocers and pub available to residents.

120 Southwark households sign up to house Ukrainian refugees Southwark residents at a previous demonstration in support of Ukraine

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Some 123 Southwark households have volunteered to take in refugees fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the council leader has said.

Cllr Kieron Williams thanked the residents of the borough who have signed up to house Ukrainians as part of a government-led nationwide scheme at Southwark's council assembly last Wednesday night (March 23). More than 150,000 people across the UK had signed up to the scheme as of a week ago, which suggests that Southwark's response may be lower as a proportion of the overall population than the rest of the country. Although the amount of people in Southwark with a spare room is expected to be a lot lower than in most other parts of the country.

Labour's Cllr Williams said: "All of us have watched with horror over the past few days the scenes of cities that look a lot like ours being torn apart by a war with no good reason, no good explanation.

"We’ve seen millions of people forced to leave their homes, millions of people forced to leave their country. I know every one of us in this chamber wants to see peace for the Ukrainians, want to see them have their country a safe place".

He added that Southwark would be supporting the new arrivals with schools and jobs, and pressuring the national government to do more to help people fleeing the war.

Tributes pour in for famous Walworth tailor George Dyer

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Tributes have flooded in for the famous tailor of Walworth after he sadly passed away.

George Dyer, who ran Thread Needleman on Walworth Road, passed away on Monday 28 March.

"We are so very sorry to say that George passed away on Monday," read a tweet published by his business. "We ask you to respect the privacy of the family whilst we deal with the situation.

"Rest in peace our lovely George," it added.

Peckham-born George ran Thread Needleman for nearly 30 years and was well-loved by locals.

His renowned shop has been in business for more than 100 years, and George had cut and measured the likes of Paul Weller, Hobbit actor Martin Freeman and the Stereophonics.

"I am devastated," said one Twitter user. "Not only a master tailor but one of the nicest fellas I’ve ever met.

"To think I won’t be able to visit his shop for a chat and some schmutter will leave a massive gap in my life."

On Sunday, the 66-year-old tweeted "tape up for a day of rest," with a photo of his measuring tape dropped around a suit jacket. This was his last public

message.

George was the son of a Jamaican immigrant, Oscar Dyer, a trouser maker and a builder.

He went to school at Peckham Manor – now Harris Academy - and the first pair of school trousers he wore were stitched on his dad’s old Singer treadle machine.

“I left school before my seventeenth birthday, and my dad told me I had to learn a trade," said George to the News in 2017. "He didn’t say to get a job, he said ‘learn a trade."

He followed in his father’s footsteps and worked for tailors called Dombey and Son, and ended up greeting customers in Fleet Street.

“It was when all the newspaper were still there, and all the customers would be barristers and reporters,” George said at the time.

“In that place, you had to be immaculately turned out. The men still wore bowler hats and black rolled-up umbrellas and black crombies, and everyone addressed each other as Mr.” George said he owed his career, in part, to the generosity of his old boss, Mr Dennis, who paid for George to go to the London College of Fashion.

In 2015, George was awarded a custom-made Southwark Heritage blue plaque by Walworth residents.

The estate has witnessed three murders in the last four years, yet many of the estate’s residents say the council is still failing to provide for their young people.

While the council claims the Brandon Youth Centre, Maddock Way, Newington, is open fourteen hours a week, the Brandon Estate TRA says it’s only open seven-and-a-half hours a week.

Councillor Jasmine Ali, Cabinet Lead for Children, Young People & Schools at Southwark Council said: “The Brandon Youth Centre is open every evening, a total of fourteen hours a week during term time, and longer hours during holidays when it also opens during the daytime.”

This is contradicted by the council’s website which says that, during term time, the youth centre is open from 6.30pm to 9pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, equalling just over seven hours a week.

The News has now obtained video footage showing that, from Tuesday 22 to Monday 28 March, the youth centre only appeared to open on Friday evening. Every other day, its lights were off with no sign of activity inside.

Tom Lloyd, chair of the tenants’ association, said: “It looks more like a youth detention centre than a youth club!

“Despite the murders of three young people over the last four years on the Brandon, the wealth of community space is being denied to our residents.

“Unlike most estates, we have an abundance of potential resources such as the Brandon Library, the Brandon Youth Centre, and the huge Jack Hobbs community hall, but they are all

“We have raised this with ward councillors, and sadly they have let us down. If holding meetings could prevent knife crime, Southwark would be the safest borough in the country,” he added.

The Brandon Estate, home to approximately 5000 people, witnessed the killings of Siddique Kamara, 23, and Rhyhiem Barton, 17, in 2018, and Clinton Evbota, 16, in 2019.

Ola Balogun, mother-of-four and Brandon TRA committee member said: “Why do I have to go all the way to Oval to provide my children with activities?

“This is the only estate I’ve heard of with so many barriers in place.

“If they give me the keys, I would gladly run the place. It’s a shame we have so many underused resources.”

The underuse of the estate’s facilities is also evident along the shopping parade, where some shopping units

have been vacant for years.

Councillor Ali said: “There are wideranging activities and support for all ages in the Brandon Estate community, running during term time and over the holidays, on an estate where we have worked together for a long time to establish a varied offer of things for people to do.”

Stella Roberts, a mother-of-three and Brandon Estate resident since 2011, gave birth to all three of her daughters on the estate. She said: “I’ve lived in this area for twenty years and didn’t know there was a youth centre.”

Ola, a pharmacy technician in the chemists opposite the youth centre, declined to give his surname but said: “I’ve been here the past three years.

All you ever see is people going in and closing the door.”

When open, the youth centre has hosted taekwondo lessons, football sessions and stop-and-search workshops, where young people can discuss their experiences of the controversial police powers, according to the Brandon TRA website.

All transgender team to play hamlet women side in ‘world first’ Exclusive

Dulwich Hamlet FC Women is competing against TRUK United FC Women (Trans Radio UK) this evening (31 March) in what has been described as "a historic occasion."

TRUK United's squad will consist of mainly transgender women however nonbinary and cisgender players will also be part of the match.

The players on the pitch for TRUK United will be solely trans women at one point during the match, which will be a world first.

TRUK founder, Lucy Clark says the match, taking place at Dulwich's Champion Hill, will "make history."

The game will be played on Transgender Day of Visibility, an annual event dedicated to "celebrating transgender people" and will raise funds for TRUK Listens, a helpline "for the trans community run by the trans community. 31st March is an important date for the trans community and is the perfect day for this important

match," says Lucy, "not only because it is a first and is making history, but will also show, that despite all the anti-trans negativity that seems to be everywhere, there is a place for transgender and nonbinary people in sport.

"Football is for all," she added.

TRUK United has several different teams and plays charity and friendly matches, besides entering tournaments and cup competitions around the UK and beyond.

Their goals are to "provide safe, fun and inclusive football" and "raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues.

TRUK's last fixture was played with their fully inclusive team against Portsmouth's Friends Fighting Cancer in September last year, they lost 3-6.

In 2018, Lucy Clark was the first open transgender football referee in the world.

Many people contacted her saying they "were excluded and unable to participate in a sport they loved because of who they were," she said.

This led to the creation of TRUK United in January 2021 to "connect the trans community" and support TRUK Listens, a free telephone helpline and counselling service for the trans community.

"TRUK United FC are a fully inclusive team, open to everyone, but depending on our opponents’ certain restrictions may

apply," said Lucy. "We are always looking for new people to join our team."

Both TRUK United FC and TRUK Listens sprang from Trans Radio UK, a dedicated radio station for transgender people.

The volunteer-run station was founded

by Lucy and Avril Clark as a way to support the trans community.

It is the only trans radio station in the UK, although they have been told it is the only one in the world and is listened to and followed globally.

"Our mission here at Trans Radio UK is very simple: to actively engage with the worldwide Trans (and allies including all of the LGBTQIA+) individuals and communities by the power of music and entertainment using radio shows with community presenters, featuring community artists and musicians as well as mainstream artists," said Lucy.

Tickets for the game start at £4.00 for adults and under 13s are free. Plus there is the option to give a donation with the ticket.

Dulwich fan defends trans-football

A veteran Dulwich Hamlet supporter has defended transfootball after the team's upcoming game against a transgender squad sparked controversy.

Paula Griffin, who has supported Dulwich "on and off" for 30 years, highlighted the importance of transfootball and challenged criticisms of it.

Her remarks follow the News' report that Dulwich Hamlet women's team will, at one point, play against a squad of solely transgender women in a "worldfirst" this week. The story created a storm on Twitter, attracting hundreds of comments and reactions.

Paula will play for TRUK United FC Women as a trans player when they compete against Dulwich Hamlet Women on Thursday. She also plays for Peckham Town Women and Goal Diggers. However, she is not speaking on behalf of any team.

"It is a very special game," said the Bermondsey local. "We as transwomen are women and we deserve to play.

"It is important to show that we belong on the same pitch, that we are accepted and welcome. There shouldn't be any policing of our gender," she added.

Paula challenged online comments that transwomen have an unfair physical advantage against women in football.

"Have they ever looked at female athletes? Women come in all shapes and sizes. I have played against women who are taller and stronger than me in every way. There is no difference.

"Michael Phelps [the most decorated Olympian swimmer of all time] is physically different from his opponents.

No one looks at his physical advantage."

She also pointed out that skill is "not gender-based."

"There are female players who run rings around me. To be good at scoring goals you need to be fearless and slightly mad, you don't have to be a man to have those."

Paula says she was "knocked back" by how supportive her opponents at Dulwich Women had been.

"Dulwich Women's team have been incredibly supportive," she said. "They are treating it as any other game. We will play a normal match."

She continued: "Dulwich is such a progressive team. The whole atmosphere at their football games has changed dramatically. We do get

problems and there is always a backlash from laddish supporters, but we are trying to make the game more and more for everyone."

Despite the negative criticism, Paula said nothing would stop her from playing.

"I am massively looking forward to the game not only because it is the first time transwomen are taking to the field, but it is the first time a trans team has played a competitive game at Champion Hill."

She did not believe the online hostility would reach the pitch.

"In my experience, people in real life are really supportive. Once I had a big pile on from Millwall supporters on the web, but nobody turned up. It's like when you are a child and you ring the doorbell and run away."

Instead, Paula saw "so much solidarity" from fans, although she was not surprised by the negative reaction to the News story.

For Claude, the beginning of the pandemic was a worrying time but vaccines brought reassurance.

“At the beginning we were all nervous, you might have people not wearing masks, or if anyone coughed… But when the vaccine was announced, us bus drivers were very happy because we knew that it would be a protection for us drivers, out there, meeting the public,” he said.

“It was so easy. I went online, booked it, went to the vaccination centre, joined the queue, got it done.

Took two paracetamol just in case. No problems…

You can walk in without an appointment to get it done in a pharmacy,” he said.

Beyond work and family, Claude also feels that being vaccinated has made life better in other ways.

“Last year I could go and visit my family in Jamaica which was fantastic. I went to see the James Bond film… That was a nice getaway from the small screen.

And that’s because of the vaccine.”

Bermondsey Carnival gets £10,000 from the council

Organisers look to businesses to make up the shortfall

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Bermondsey Carnival has been given a grant from Southwark Council a third the size of the funding it got last year - and nearly 90 per cent less than the amount the council gave four years ago.

The free, Southwark Park-based August festival was awarded £10,000 by the council, compared to £32,500 for last year's event, which was smaller than usual due to Covid-19, and more than £70,000 in each of 2018 and 2019.

Russell Dryden, who organises the festival with Phil Burkett through their

Bermondsey Beat group, said they would now try to get roughly another £20,000 from private sources to make up the

shortfall. "We're happy to get anything to be honest. Now we can start to reach out to get the rest of the money. A few people

have offered to help so far."

The News reported that Mr Dryden was told by the council earlier this year that the carnival would not get the funding it normally receives, and that organisers would have to make a bid to one of Southwark's funds for cultural events whose biggest grants are £10,000, much smaller than the amount the carnival normally gets.

The news led to complaints by the Southwark Park Association 1869, which helps manage the park, and the Liberal Democrat councillors for the north Bermondsey ward.

The Liberal Democrats tried to get Labour, which controls Southwark Council, to commit to funding the carnival fully at the council assembly on Wednesday, March 23, but this was voted down. Labour's Cllr Alice Macdonald said previously that the council wants to fund a "wider range of diverse events, that reflect the diverse communities living across Southwark."

Cllr Hamish McCallum, the Lib Dems' leader in Southwark, said at the meeting that "the council is insinuating that the Bermondsey Carnival isn’t diverse enough

to receive funding any more."

But Labour council leader Cllr Kieron Williams shot back that Cllr McCallum was "sewing discord where there isn't any", adding that the carnival is "a fantastically diverse event".

The carnival is just one of many cultural events that were given a share of a £250,000 council funding pool this week, including the Camberwell Arts Festival, Identities – Latin American Film Festival, which got £5,000 each, a Day of Dance in Peckham, which got £10,000, and £23,250 for a schools programme run by the South London Gallery, among other initiatives for young people.

Southwark also launched a programme to give £6,000 grants for black and ethnic minority artists in disciplines like dance, music and video.

The council is still deliberating over a proposal to hold a private K-pop festival in Southwark Park this summer, which would involve closing off part of the park to the public for about two weeks.

Arguments have been made that money made from the K-pop festival, if it goes ahead, should help fund the Bermondsey Carnival.

Forced to hand over £180,000 after running sex trafficking ring

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A nurse from Bermondsey has been ordered to pay nearly £184,000 as part of her punishment for trafficking Nigerian women into Europe and forcing them into sex work.

Josephine Iyamu, 54, who is already serving an eighteen-year stretch in prison for her vile crimes, was slapped with the confiscation order at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, March 4.

The amount took into account her assets, which include a large house in Benin City, Nigeria, with staff. She also had a £400,000 house in Bermondsey, as the News has reported.

If she fails to pay the full sum within three months, she will serve two more years in prison and will still have to pay the full amount.

Iyamu, aka Madame Sandra, was jailed in July 2018 for her human trafficking scheme, which involved putting her victims through humiliating voodoo ceremonies while taking them to Germany to work as prostitutes.

Kay Mellor, a senior investigating officer with the National Crime Agency, said: “Josephine Iyamu specifically targeted vulnerable women and put them through the most horrific

experience, only to profit considerably form their misery.

“Iyamu’s expenditure on travel and properties far outweighed her legitimate earnings as a nurse and our investigation into her finances proved she made hundreds of thousands of pounds from her criminality.

“Confiscation orders are a key tool which provide us with the capability to really hit criminals where it hurts – in the pocket.

“Iyamu was calculated, manipulative and motivated by money. Not only is she serving a hefty prison sentence, but she won’t be living a luxury lifestyle when she comes out.”

Iyamu enlisted the services of a voodoo priest to intimidate vulnerable Nigerian women before forcing them into her sex ring.

She charged the women 38,000 euros to arrange their travel across the Mediterranean before forcing them to pay off the debt through prostitution.

She subjected her victims to humiliating rituals including making them drink blood containing worms, eat chicken hearts and have their skin cut with razor blades.

One of the victims was forced to have an abortion when she was raped by traffickers – only for Iyamu to charge her £440 for the procedure.

It’s back! Rooftop cinema returning to Peckham

The Rooftop Film Club is reopening at Rye Lane's Bussey Building on 29 April.

This year's programme at London's first outdoor cinema will feature cult classics, as well as newly released films.

Films will be screened in the outdoor cinema on projectors, with wireless headphones, chairs and blankets.

"We celebrate everything that is great about film," said Gerry Cottle Jnr, founder of Rooftop Film Club.

"Having started out in 2011 as the UK’s first rooftop cinema experience, we’ve reinvented the way people enjoy

cinema.

"For us, it’s all about nostalgia [and] escapism ... against a stunning backdrop of the London skyline, and of course, the opportunity to catch a new or favourite movie in a completely unique setting,” he added.

The new film season opens with True Romance (29 April), followed by Jurassic Park (30 April) and West Side Story (1 May).

There will then be a screening every day until 29 May, including "films that should have won an Oscar for dividing audiences", such as Donnie Darko, as well as "swoon-worthy flicks" featuring Tom Cruise.

The Rooftop Film Club will continue into the summer months, "serving up

big ‘90s energy" with a series of prom films.

There will also be partnerships with London Fashion Week and a showcase of black cinema throughout the summer months.

The film club has worked with young black creatives to curate a programme of black films, which have all had a huge impact on the industry.

Buildings across the borough will be fitted with heating upgrades and renewable energy improvements, which will save thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Libraries, community centres and around 2,000 households are set to benefit from the multi-million pound investment by Southwark Council.

Three estates in the borough will be retrofitted with water source heat pumps, which extract heat from bodies of water and convert it into energy.

The possible carbon savings from this project equate to 3,850 people flying from Gatwick to Chicago or an average car travelling 13,500,000 miles every year.

“We are working across the council to tackle the climate emergency that is

facing us all," said Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness.

"I am delighted that these works will further improve the quality of housing for our residents and also help us meet our ambitions for a healthier environment,” she added.

The work on the estates is scheduled to be completed before the summer.

This follows the council's announcement that it has finished the first phase of green improvements to libraries and community centres, which have been fitted with air source heat pumps, solar panels and better insulation.

Fourteen of Southwark's buildings have seen improvements, cutting down on gas consumption and reducing carbon emissions, while saving the council money on running costs.

The council said this would save £31,150 each year on its energy bills alone, alongside cutting carbon intensive gas emissions by 22 per cent.

Dulwich Library, Peckham Registry and Brandon Youth Club have been fitted with rooftop solar panels as part of the effort, alongside several other council properties.

"At a time when the cost of gas is higher and more volatile than ever, taking action to improve our buildings through the installation of air-source heat pumps, solar panels, and improved insulation, will cut heating bills and cut carbon,” said Cllr Helen Dennis, cabinet member for the climate emergency and sustainable development.

She said the council would invest a further £5.4 million into decarbonising council buildings.

“Tackling the climate emergency is a top priority for Southwark Council and we are getting on with the business of delivering carbon-saving projects across the borough," added the Cllr.

79 per cent of Southwark's carbon emissions currently come from buildings.

"We haven’t been leaving the house much but already I’ve twice had to carry him out past men waiting for drugs on our stairway. I ask you to imagine this: our stairs are narrow, there’s not really enough room for two people to pass comfortably, you have to carry your baby past a person who is bigger than you, imposing, you both have to turn to the side to get through.

"You know he’s slightly desperate for drugs and unpredictable. It’s terrifying.

"Groups of people sit down and cook up on the stairs, and when, as a resident you want to leave your house, you have to step over limbs and walk through clouds of goodness knows what. It’s extremely scary and I now dread going

up and down the stairs to my home."

Other reports of incidents on the estate include someone trying to rob a disabled resident and a drug dealer glassing a customer over a money dispute, the woman said.

She added that residents felt sorry for the people who found themselves in these desperate situations, but that residents "are being greatly impacted by these problems" and it "is not sustainable or fair for anyone to endure."

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Darren Merrill, Southwark's cabinet member responsible for safety in the borough, said he was sorry that residents had to endure such horrible scenes in their home. He said that he would visit the estate the next day to meet residents and discuss the problems in more detail, and that the council would consider putting in a CCTV camera.

Estate plagued by ‘terrifying drug dealers and users’, residents say

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A mother living on a Bermondsey council estate has told of her fear at having to walk with her child past drug dealers and people smoking drugs - just to leave her flat.

The woman, who lives on the Aylwin Estate to the east of Tower Bridge Road, said she and fellow residents had had to deal with three or four dealers making multiple drug deals a day, drug users injecting themselves and lying passed out on stairs and in landings, and people urinating and defecating in public.

But the ratio of house prices to wages in Southwark went down slightly in the pandemic, falling to 12.3 in 2020 from 14.2 in 2017. The Office for National Statistics' (ONS) figures released on Wednesday (March 23) show that the house price-to-wage disparity is rebounding already.

Southwark is by no means the worst in the country, or indeed London.

Kensington and Chelsea in west London - home to Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich's £150 million mansion - has average property prices nearly 36 times higher than the annual wages of its average resident.

Other London boroughs were also bad - the top six least affordable local authorities in England and Wales are in London in 2021.

In south-east London, Lambeth, Lewisham and Bromley also all have slightly bigger gaps between property prices and wages than Southwark.

Although the situation may not be as bad in Southwark as it is in other parts of London, the gap between

property prices and what people earn has widened vastly since 1997, the year when the ONS figures begin. In that year, the average house price in Southwark was 3.8 times the annual earnings of a resident of the borough.

And Southwark was considerably worse than the average for all local authorities in England and Wales in 2021, which showed house prices were 9.1 times higher than earnings.

Southwark's house price-to-wage in 1997 was only marginally higher than the national average, which was 3.5.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle has blamed unaffordable housing in Southwark in part on "corrupt Russian money", as reported in the News in February.

Labour MP Coyle said: "“In Southwark, we know better than most about rising house prices, but the market is badly over-heated due in part due to corruption with Russians and others buying houses at ridiculously inflated prices in order to launder finance through our capital. " He said that “the Government admits there is a problem but has failed to act for years, adding to London’s housing crisis and leaving some homes empty that could be better used."

The picture is bleak across much of England and Wales, according to the ONS. Affordability got worse in more than 91 per cent of local authorities.

Average house prices increased in 96 per cent of local authorities, while average earnings rose in just half.

Council promises ‘1,000 more’ council homes, claiming it has already ‘beaten’ its target of 2,500 Exclusive

The council says it has "achieved" its goal of building or starting 2,5000 new council homes by May 2022.

This comes as a recent Freedom of Information (FOI) request revealed that the local authority had built fewer than 42 council houses a year between 2018 22, despite having 16,500 people on the housing waiting list.

The council claimed it had reached its building target "early" and "exceeded the number of projected new council homes."

This is because its own figures include homes that it has "started" to build, besides

those it is building.

It contested the FOI, saying between 2018 - 22 the council had actually delivered 366 new homes, including those it bought back and gained through planning requirements, alongside direct builds.

“I’m so proud to announce that we have exceeded our target of providing 2,500 new council homes by May 2022," said Cllr Kieron Williams, leader of Southwark Council. "This is an important milestone which represents years of hard work from our staff.

"Every single one of these new homes will make an enormous difference to someone’s life and will help to tackle social inequality and homelessness in our borough,” he added.

The council's claim it has exceeded its homes target is based on building work in progress at 46 sites across the borough.

These sites, it says, will deliver 1,600 homes

on top of the more than 800 it claims to have completed. Now it has committed to starting 1,000 more by 2026, meaning between 2014 and 2026 the council says it will deliver 3,500 council-owned homes at council rent levels.

Only 366 council properties were added to the council's books between February 2018 - 2020 through buy-backs, planning obligations and new-builds, according to the FOI. The council says it had reached their target "in spite" of the coronavirus pandemic "which has seen contractual delays of up to six months" and "Brexit matters creating material cost increases, together with labour shortages and general anxiety in the market."

"In these difficult times the whole of the council has united to ensure that this target remained at the forefront such that it was successfully achieved," the council added.

Southwark Council boasts of having

Britain’s “most ambitious” council house building scheme, with an aim of creating 11,000 extra council homes by 2043.

"Our council homes building programme is one of the biggest in the country, and reaches across the length and breadth of the borough," said Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for homes and homelessness. "We have said many times that there is a real human cost to the housing crisis. With more than 16,500 households on our waiting list for a council home – often in overcrowded conditions – not building more is simply not an option," she added.

The council said the "government’s welfare reforms, coupled with astronomical rent levels in the private sector and the cost of living crisis, have made the housing market increasingly unaffordable. This leaves people with no option but to seek help from local authorities, despite our budgets being slashed year on year."

It showed that every Southwark Council tenant reports a repair with their home nearly three times a year on average - but this figure has gone down by nearly a third since 2010, according to the council’s own figures.

Canada Water Dockside is given the go-ahead

Southwark councillors gave the go-ahead to a huge set of tower blocks by the Canada Water Dock last week, despite concerns about the overshadowing of nearby flats.

The Canada Water Dockside scheme is made up of 110-metre, 63-metre and 55-metre towers that will serve mainly as office blocks, with some restaurants, shops and community spaces included too, as well as a new public square.

The new buildings will be on a site that the council originally gave planning permission for in 2013 as a largely residential site, including 231 "affordable" homes. Current owners Art-Invest, who bought the site after the council gave the original permission, agreed to pay £27 million instead of building the new homes. That money is earmarked to be spent on building more council homes.

Speaking at the planning meeting last Monday (March 21), Southwark Council planning officers said that the new buildings would cause "noticeable adverse impact on some local residents" - particularly the SCAPE block of student flats currently being built - but added that “certain adverse impacts” can be expected as part of the wider ongoing development of the Canada Water area.

British Land, whose 3,500-home Canada Water masterplan makes them the largest developers in the area, wrote to council planning officers raising concerns about the possible impact of Art-Invest's scheme on their development. Officers said British Land's buildings would not be affected.

Southwark Council welcomed the news that its planning committee had approved the development.

Some objectors to the application argued that there was little point building so many new offices in the area, as more people have worked from home since the onset of the pandemic.

But Art-Invest development director Luka Vukotic told the News in June: “It feels like we have seen a paradigm shift in office working where we’re used to coming to an office and sitting at a desk – but actually the future is going to look very different. And a lot of the offices that are only equipped to deal with day to day sitting at your desk will become something that people don’t want any more.”

Building work is likely to start in spring next year, Art-Invest said.

A pioneering initiative delivering food to vulnerable residents in Southwark has been launchedlast week, writes Joshua Askew...

Food Connect will redistribute surplus food from supermarkets to people across the borough in a bid to help with rising living costs and tackle food waste.

It is estimated that more than 300,000 meals could be shared annually thanks to the initiative, which has been funded by charity Hubbub, Southwark Council and the London Mayor.

"This is such a common-sense approach to addressing so many modern-day issues and echoes a time when we could more easily knock on a neighbour’s door to share food, offer a helping hand, or where someone could ask for help if they were in need – it is how a community should be," said Cllr Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Southwark Council.

"The fact that this expanded service means that shops and supermarkets will reduce waste and that the project supports environmental sustainability is all the better," she added.

The food will be shared with residents, via the Albrighton Community Centre in Camberwell.

Retailers Sainsbury's, the COOP, Marks & Spenser and Lidl have already signed up for the scheme.

Electric vans and e-bikes will be used by Food Connect to ensure items are delivered to locals "quickly" and "efficiently", rather than being thrown away.

The launch of the low-carbon redistribution service in Southwark follows a successful pilot in Milton Keynes, where in the first year 240 tonnes of

good food was saved from waste.

Fifty per cent of this was fruit and veg, allowing locals to access a greater volume and variety of foods.

Albrighton Community Centre will be the hub of the new project as it already supports around 400 local residents a week, including running vaccination drives and providing citizens advice. Its community fridge allows anyone to exchange or pick up food that would otherwise go to waste.

The centre hopes Food Connect's support will free up their time to pursue other projects that help tackle loneliness, promote learning new skills and healthy eating, alongside identifying other local groups in need of support.

They have also pointed out the environmental boons of the scheme.

Switching to an e-van will result in transport efficiencies and carbon savings, with food collections previously being done by volunteers in their own cars.

The fully electric service in Milton Keynes resulted in estimated transport emission savings of 8 tonnes in the first year The Albrighton Community Centre currently shares up to eight tonnes of food each month and the local coordinators have seen an increase in visitors as the cost of living crisis is starting to bite.

"The demand for Albrighton Community Centre’s services skyrocketed during the pandemic, and our amazing volunteers worked tirelessly to provide support and food to people who need it," said Jackie Mustoe, manager at the centre.

"This is a very exciting time for us."

Year 4 pupil Miles Nzei was the first to ring the bell, which was recast by a Loughborough foundry and paid for by Heritage of London trust and property developers Delancey. The bell now sits in the bell tower on the roof of the school's Victorian building.

Miles said: “When I was under 5 I didn’t know what a bell was and I have never heard a bell or seen one before and it’s amazing, I really enjoyed the celebration and the ringing of our bell, we use to make little bells, but never had a bell before!”

The arrival of the new bell was accompanied by some teaching of the

history of the local area and the traditions of bells. Bell-making has disappeared from London, with the capital's last foundry in Whitechapel closing last year after 450 years.

The bell will now be rung at the start of each day, as well as for special events.

Ms Sarah Parbhu, headteacher of Galleywall School, said: “We are so pleased to finally have a bell back in its rightful place, at the very top of our school! It has been a brilliant opportunity to look back at the history of Galleywall with our children and look to its future as we start new traditions!”

Garden allotments provide green refuge for Brandon Estate residents Brandon Estate residents will be donning their gloves and grabbing their spades this spring, thanks to the construction of garden allotments on the estate’s grounds, writes Herbie Russell...

With funding from Southwark Council’s ‘Great Estates’ programme, the Brandon 1 Tenant’s and Resident’s Association (TRA) has worked with the local council to build the new allotments.

A gardening group has been formed to use them, with a different Brandon Estate resident responsible for each of the ten plots.

Giovanni Zintu, a Brandon Estate resident and keen gardener who grew up on a farm in Sardinia said: “I’d just moved here and was walking my dog and the gardening group was holding a fermentation workshop.

“I stopped and had a chat and got involved. It was brilliant for being welcomed and for feeling part of the community.”

Older wooden planters were built in 2011 but are already beginning to rot so the new allotments have been built with sustainability in mind.

They are made of long-lasting brick, feature a clever irrigation system and have water butts anchored to the ground to deter thieves.

Building the allotments wasn’t easy because the ground sits on a WWII bomb site. So, just inches below the topsoil, there is long-forgotten bombsite debris. Tom Lloyd joked: “We were worried we

might hit some of Hitler’s unexploded bombs with the jackhammer.”

Thankfully, any buried doodlebugs were safely avoided.

Tom Lloyd, chair of the Brandon One TRA said: “We’re not ace gardeners. We’re better at drinking beers than we are gardening.

“Nobody is growing prize melons to show at Chelsea. It’s about making a garden and seeing what happens.”

The Brandon Estate sits in Newington, one of the Southwark’s most diverse areas, and this is reflected in the club’s membership.

Every day people from Britain, Colombia, Russia, Jamaica, Romania and Sardinia descend their tower blocks, working together to grow brocolli, spinach, fennel, mizuna and more.

In exchange for a plot, residents help out with gardening work around the estate. For those wanting to secure a plot, the allotments are opened up to newcomers on an annual basis.

As part of the Great Estates programme funding, the TRA has also worked with the council to install covers around the recycling bins to prevent rubbish blowing across the estate. Flowers have also been planted in front of several blocks.

Launched in 2019, Southwark Council’s ‘Great Estates’ initiative, has aimed to give residents a voice in how their estates can be improved through consultation and funding.

Southwark Soap Box for the 2022 local elections

Our unique Gogglebox-style coverage of the issues that affect residents in the run-up to the council election on May 5th

In a Gogglebox-style show, we are filming how four Southwark households react to what local politicians say about three key areas: housing, crime and education, and transport and the environment.

We are focusing on one part of the

borough - Newington, near Elephant and Castle - which had the lowest voter turnout in the last elections in May 2018.

For the first episode on housing, Labour’s Newington councillor Alice Macdonald, Graham Neale, the Liberal Democrat councillor for nearby St George’s, and Green Party candidate Clare Wood sat down with the News for a debate. The Conservative Party were invited to send one of their candidates, but did not respond to our repeated requests.

We then showed their answers to four households from a range of backgrounds

in the ward to get their reactions: Ola, a mother of four and a Brandon Estate council tenant, mother-and-daughter Paula and Kate, also on the Brandon, Kym from the Newington Estate and her partner Les, and Neil, a leaseholder in Oyster Court.

The focuses: heating and hot water problems on local council estates - of which there have been many - the number of new council homes being built, and whether the council should be tackling the housing waiting list by building on open space.

‘I’d be better off having a bath on the estate than in my flat’ - says kym Why would one woman say she’d be better off having a bath in the middle of her council estate then in her flat?

Fifty-three-year-old Kym made the extraordinary claim after hearing a candidate try to explain the benefits of a new environmental heating plan for estates across the borough that have been blighted by heating and hot water outages for years.

The candidate was taking part in a Southwark News debate as part of this paper’s bid to get more people engaged in local politics and raise the turnout in the upcoming local elections on May 5.

The Newington Estate, where Kym lives, will, it is hoped, use water-source heat pumps to heat people’s homes.

Both the Newington and the Brandon Estate, each home to hundreds of households, have suffered outage after outage to their communal heating systems over the years, with some residents going weeks without heating and hot water.

Southwark Council has pledged to tackle the outages by spending £350 million across the borough to install renewable solutions like heat pumps.

Liberal Democrat Cllr Graham Neale said “it’s a great use of… renewable energy, I don’t think you’re likely to cool the groundwater in the Thames basin.”

“Cor,” Kym said in response, sitting in her ground-floor flat, “I’d be better off having a bath down there than up here!”

Kym was watching the debate with her partner Les, 73. They are just one of four households that the News is showing the debates to, in a Gogglebox-style experiment.

Les explained that they have often had to bathe in just three inches of water because of the problems in their home.

Kym said she had been left with no heating and hot water every year for the past 30 years of living on the estate, and recently went a full month without any hot water.

“They’ve been doing it for years, honestly,” she said. “Every bit of this estate has been taken up at some point… [why doesn’t someone] stand up and say ‘hold up a minute, let’s do this then.”

“A lot of people feel the loss of their green space,” the Greens’ Ms Wood said. “Where their children can play.

It’s an important part of quality of life.”

Southwark’s plans to build thousands of council homes have often been opposed by groups of local people because of the question of where to build new housing in such a densely populated borough.

Many of the council’s new homes are planned for empty spaces on existing estates, which some residents say will block out light and disturb them.

Ola agreed: “You cannot use green spaces, because when you use green spaces, what is there for the children?

What is there for the elderly and retired?

Come on now, you cannot keep using the green spaces.”

“It just sounds like a plan B,” Neil said, “because they can’t do anything with the developers because they’re too powerful.

Many of the new homes Southwark has planned or is building are not on green spaces, but rather are on garages or other open spaces within estates.

Ms Wood said the council should focus more on bringing empty homes back into use rather than building on open spaces.

Cllr Macdonald pointed out that about three-quarters of the empty homes in

investment and we have committed that.”

“I’m sure you get frustrated, but you’re not showing it,” was Ola’s opinion. The 35-year-old mother of four from the Brandon estate is another one of the four households watching our debates.

Mother-and-daughter Paula, 42, and Kate, 23, also on the Brandon estate, were not impressed either. Kate said: “Outside is warmer than the actual homes.”

Southwark gives residents compensation for days when they have heating and hot water outages for 24 hours. Cllr Macdonald mentioned the £3 daily payment that gets added into residents’ service accounts automatically. Asked whether she thought £3 per day was enough, Ola said: “No.” But she acknowledged that Cllr Macdonald had fought for people on her estate to be given extra compensation a few years ago. Paula said she had not got any compensation, although she lives on the same estate.

The Lib Dems’ Graham Neale - a council tenant himself - held back from criticising Labour, cautioning that “there’s always going to be problems with those big ticket items, the communal housing systems…

He added that heating systems like that scared him because if there was a problem, “400 people have got your phone number [asking] ‘where’s my heating, where’s my heating.”

Chuckling, Kym said: “I’ve got 500 [notifications] on my phone to say ‘Oh I am sorry that we’ve got no hot water or heating at your address, but we’re doing our very best to get it done.’”

The Greens’ Ms Wood said the new heating schemes were “fantastic”, but

added that she wanted “accountability” on how much of the hundreds of millions of pounds being spent will go on upkeep of the heating systems, and also insulation.

Oyster Court leaseholder Neil, 38, our final household watching the recording of the debate, said that accountability is “a good thing, but that lots of people try to evade accountability”.

Kym’s response was more direct: “I think they’re talking a load of sh*t”.

Nodding, Neil said: “It does seem like all this fancy stuff goes up, and they say ‘it’s going to be affordable stuff’ and then actually it’s not, it just gets bought up by wealthy people from abroad.”

Paula remained unmoved by Cllr Neale’s words. “He seems worried by this situation,” she said, laughing ruefully. “But I don’t know if he wants to do anything about it!”

Ms Wood agreed with Cllr Neale.

“Labour does have a very bad track record on making sure that new developments have space for social housing and local residents, and the idea of affordable housing is something that is hidden behind, because how affordable is it really for the local people.”

She pointed to the Heygate, a former estate near Elephant and Castle roundabout that was sold off for below its full value to a private developer more than ten years ago. But Paula said that in her opinion the estate was “not good” but that the new private blocks that have replaced it are “bright, modern, very nice.”

the borough belonged to private owners, which made it harder for the council to take them - although, as the News has reported, they haven’t used two key powers to do this once in the past five years.

The Labour councillor added that Southwark had huge pressure on its council housing waiting list, with 16,200 households needing a place to live.

Kate asked: “Is there pressure for homes? Yes, there’s a lot of people on waiting lists. Is there pressure to build new homes in green spaces, for example?

No, there isn’t.”

Cllr Neale said: “We’ve got some of the most deprived people in the borough, some of the people who are in greatest need, and it’s their open spaces.”

About 60 new council homes are planned for Newington, as part of plans to tackle the waiting list of thousands of households.

Asked if residents’ regular complaints that they were not being consulted enough by the council over new homes were fair, Cllr Macdonald said she disagreed.

But Ola had other ideas, complaining that she and other residents weren’t being told about Southwark’s plans.

Paula added: “I didn’t hear anything about any progress or how they are planning… to achieve this.”

The new homes in Newington are part of a wider Labour scheme to get 11,000 homes built by 2043.

Laughing, Ola went on: “2043? Do they plan to be in power till then?”

What’s on this springtime Buckle up for something cosmic The Southbank Centre is putting on quite a show this Easter.

Three events geared towards families and young people will run throughout April at their beautiful Queen Elizabeth Hall and Riverside Terrace.

Between 8 - 10 April, Zog and the Flying Doctors are back for a brand new adventure, in a family show based on the famous book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. It has been described as “a truly modern take on a classic fairy tale.” You wont be disappointed.

Fancy meeting the Gruffalo?

Greenwich Theatre London has announced their upcoming children’s Easter programme.

There will be a range of family-friendly shows at the stunning theatre, including musical adaptations of the Gruffalo and a playful infant event, between 4 - 17 April.

Kicking off at Greenwich is Hurly Burly’s Meet Me a Tree, an interactive first opera for 0 - 2 year olds. It will feature beautiful singing and relaxing music on a multisensory journey, allowing all the opportunity to unwind and have fun.

Then, on April 13-14, you can join mouse on a daring adventure through the deep, dark wood in a musical reimagining of the classic book the Gruffalo. Children aged three and up can sing, laugh and have monstrous laughs in this much-loved show that’s toured Britain and the world.

Paddle Theatre is bringing you Margo and Mr Whatsit from 15-16 April, a show about playful imaginary friends and what happens to them as we grow up.

Head down the rabbit hole Families have been invited to leap down the rabbit hole at an action-packed Alice in Wonderland themed event at Elephant this Easter half term.

The free ‘Easter in Wonderland’ event will take place on 16 April from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Castle Square in Elephant and Castle.

There will be plenty of Alice in Wonderland themed activities at the event, including face painting, bunting making and biscuit decorating workshops, where you can decorate a biscuit shaped mushroom to take home (or scoff right away).

All workshops will be free to take part in.

A selection of performers will be playing from 12:00 p.m. to celebrate the Easter festivities, such as the Elephant and Castle Community Hub Choir, Frogprince Kids Music Concert, Upside Down Street Dance and SuperArts Dance Academy.

What’s on this springtime

Go Wild for Gulliver’s Travels The Unicorn Theatre on Tooley Street has rather a lot of upcoming events this spring.

There will be a whole host of entertaining performances, including Gulliver’s Travels which is shown until 16 April.

In this Unicorn Production, inspired by Johnathan Swift’s book, Gulliver’s fantastical imaginings have been vividly brought to life using video cameras, intricate table-top sets and projection, alongside live performance.

This creates a playful, funny and highly inventive show that uses Swift’s biting satire to view our own world from a very different angle.

Support Local Artists Can’t face the drive up to Edinburgh? Peckham has created its own arts festival - Peckham Fringe - which will take place every day from Monday 2 May to 5 June.

There will be a multitude of events and art forms on display, spanning new writing, musical, stand-up, sketch comedy, dance, cabaret, opera, poetry, mentalism, improvisation and even the odd Q&A. Many of which will be interactive and, if you dare, participantled.

“We want to be representative of Southwark,” said associate director of Theatre Peckham Phillippe Cato. “This place is made up of many different identities and people.”

“We wanted to make sure there is something for everyone.”

He says Peckham Fringe has picked out pieces that will resonate with local audiences and asked everyone from the area to “get involved.”

The event involves up and coming local artists, as well as big names, and will support new talent as much as possible, both artistically and financially, with ticket fees split with artists.

“I am really excited to see our resident company open the festival. They are so many brilliant artists [at the Fringe] I cant wait.”

“There’s a lot of work you wouldn’t see at any other festival,” he added.

READERS’ VIEWS Letter to the Editor: Stand with those brave people opposing Putin in Russia

Thousands of local families let down by the Chancellor T he Spring Statement let down thousands of Southwark residents who are struggling with spiralling energy bills and food prices.

We should have seen a hike in Universal Credit for the 38,000 claimants in our borough, instead we got a hike in National Insurance.

I was pleased that the Mayor included my specific ask for benefit payments to be uprated to keep up with the spike in the cost of living, in his wider lobbying of the Government, ahead of the Spring Statement. This was sadly ignored by the Chancellor.

Recent stats have also shown that rents have risen in South London by ten per cent. But instead of raising Local Housing Allowance or providing the Mayor with powers to introduce rent controls, the Chancellor gave a tax cut to landlords.

It is as if renters don’t exist.

The fuel duty cut of 5p, announced to great fanfare, is also unlikely to make much of a difference to stretched household budgets. Neither

will a tax cut scheduled to take place in two years time. Struggling parents need help now to feed their families and the choice between heating or eating is unacceptable.

To free up funding to ensure those on the lowest incomes can get the proper help to weather this storm, we needed to see a windfall tax on oil and gas companies who are making colossal profits.

I raised my concerns about the Chancellor’s cop-out Spring Statement with Sadiq Khan at last week’s Mayor’s Question Time. In response he said that “it usually takes three or four days for a Budget to unravel, this one unravelled within minutes”.

A worrying knock on effect of the Government’s lack of action is that independent food banks are being pushed to breaking point, with reports that increasing food costs are leading to a significant drop in donations.

To help with this, City Hall has recently joined up with the Council and the charity, Hubbub, to fund a new initiative to redistribute

surplus food from supermarkets to people across Southwark.

In addition, I have obtained figures showing that The Mayor’s Kitchen Social scheme has also provided almost 11,000 of the poorest children in the borough with a safe place to go during the school holidays where they can socialise, make new friends and get a free, healthy meal.

Finally, my heart goes out to all Ukrainian Londoners and refugees.

It has been inspiring to see that 120 families in Southwark so far, have signed-up to take people into their homes and is a testament to the community spirit of the borough.

It is crucial that the Government gets its act together and makes it easier for those fleeing Putin’s invasion to find sanctuary in our capital and our country. Our current visa system is putting thousands of the most vulnerable refugees at risk and is a mark of national embarrassment when compared with the much more humane approach of many of our European neighbours.

Small things can make big changes

T

his past week, on ‘red alert’ high air pollution days, Londoners were warned to limit their time outdoors. At the same time, many drivers were sitting in parked cars with their engines running.

I asked one driver if he would switch off while he was parked up, doing paperwork. He shrugged: ‘What about pollution from agriculture?’ It’s a reasonable question on the national scale, but I couldn’t see any manure spreaders on the Walworth Road that day. Why not start with the changes within our reach? And energyefficient driving makes financial as well as health sense: companies and individuals see the benefits in pounds and pence. Take a negative example first. Ten years ago, David Cameron scrapped a package of policies on wind, solar and energy efficiency, ditching the aim of making all new homes carbon neutral. That decision has cost us an estimated £2.5 billion, or £150 per household, per year. And we’ve lost out on the resilience and political independence that comes with generating your own power.

A positive example now. A hundred years ago, in 1922, Ada Salter became the mayor of Bermondsey and the first woman mayor in London. A pioneer of environmentalism, housing reform and public health, she’s remembered locally for establishing playgrounds and planting thousands of trees on Southwark streets.

Focusing on small things can help when the news is overwhelming, as it has been in the last month.

It seems to me one hope for an end to the fighting in Ukraine lies with the brave individuals in Russia who have been taking to the streets (and TV) to denounce Putin’s invasion. They face potentially 15 years’ jail and certainly violence at the hands of Russia’s brutal robocops.

I’ve been researching how we here might express our support and solidarity, including talking to anti-war Russians at demonstrations in London. One - a young man called Alexey - had a couple of practical suggestions. He recommends two websites: 1) https://acf.international/ - ACF stands for the Anti-Corruption Foundation started by Alexei Navalny in 2011. He has just been sentenced to nine more years in the gulag on another trumped-up charge.

2) https://meduza.io/en - a independent news website, based in Latvia, that publishes impressive reports in Russian and English, including one recently on Navalny’s trial.

They both have emails for feedback - info@acf.international and reports@meduza.io While these are not direct routes to the oppositionists, Alexey says the websites “will hopefully pass [support] onwards through their articles and podcasts/youtube I’m not aware of any direct channels or forums - those are being immediately infiltrated and suppressed by FSB [the security police], people are only willing to discuss protests with their close friends.”

But he adds: “Words of support would be very valuable for them.”

So: I would like to encourage people across the borough, from Rotherhithe to Dulwich, to send these brave people a cascade of messages, spelling out perhaps that it’s “solidarity from Southwark.”

ere at the Southwark News we are excited to be embarking on a new way to cover the local elections – in the hope that we will get more people out voting come May 5th.

This is the first time that we have run such a project involving video, internet and our traditional newspaper coverage. We hope that this Gogglebox-style initiative will appeal to those who do not usually engage in local politics and get them to see how important it is to go and vote.

Our hand-picked focus group of local households do represent the make-up of the local population in just one small area of Southwark – the ward of Newington in Walworth.

The candidates standing in this one area of the borough are being asked specific questions on subjects around housing, crime, environment and transport. Their answers are being videoed. Our focus group are watching their answers. Each person’s reaction and opinions in the group is then forming the basis of our coverage.

Just like when watching the hit Channel 4 show, we hope that our readers will be more interested in hearing and watching what people like themselves are saying, rather than us simply videoing and covering what the political candidates have to say.

This pilot scheme, which is being assessed by the Public Interest News Foundation, will, it is hoped, give the electorate more of an understanding of what and who they are voting for this May. Newington is one ward out of a total of 23 wards in the borough and it has one of lowest turnouts in Southwark, hovering at around just 30 per cent.

It has some of the highest levels of deprivation but also some of the most expensive housing in London due to its inner city location, with the northern part of the electoral ward being just south of the Elephant and Castle roundabout.

Alongside a large traditional white working class community there is now a sizeable middle class / student population and 48 per of Newington is BAME. The largest ethnic make-up is from the African diaspora and there is a sizeable Latino community.

The focus group is made up from these four groups and has not been picked from any particular political party or campaign group.

It is important that people understand what each party is offering, but it is also important that people meet the candidates. We hope this might encourage you to actually engage with the people standing for election in your part of Southwark. Often it is a case of thinking to yourself when meeting them, would I like this person to tackle my housing, parking problems or any general issue you have with council services. If the answer is yes, then vote for them.

And allow the22:35 borough to be truly representative of what people want and need.

Robert Moses marches out with a confrontational countenance, takes up centre stage and boasts of how he likes to go for long swims in the ocean after dark, swimming out as far as he can and then going even further, leaving others fretting on a Long Island beach. And hereby Ralph Fiennes sets up his character of a headstrong man who cares little for the feelings of others, writes Michael Holland.

David Hare’s Straight Line Crazy is a true story set in 1925 when Moses was New York’s Commissioner for Parks and saw the many green spaces underused and left to decay. He decided to bring them back to life for the ‘masses’ who had just fought for, and won, a drop in working hours from 70 to 45 and would have much more leisure time. The parks soon thronged with people, so Moses linked them up with new highways for the new cars that were now filling the streets.

When Moses set his sights on opening up the beaches of Long Island to the upwardly-mobile city dwellers, the rich residents were determined to fight back, but Moses’ philosophy was to demolish trees and buildings and start laying the tarmac before any campaigns could begin, believing that it is easier to stop a tree or old building being pulled down than it is to stop a highway being constructed once it had been started. He won that battle.

He was a Messiah to some, an untouchable god who could do as he pleased, and his workforce willingly followed his every move.

After the interval, we jump forward 30 years. Moses now has swanky offices and two loyal staff, who have

been there from the beginning, who he uses to get rid of new, young architects with modern ideas that differ from his own. But the world has changed.

This is now the 50s and New Yorkers have seen the Bronx destroyed by urban planners driving a highway through it and the former residents dispersed across the state. There are now more campaigns to save the city from Robert Moses, who believes that it is better to demolish and rebuild than to do nothing but appease those

who are against change. However, these campaigners are not the uneducated masses who feel that they have no voice and do nothing, but the middle class who know they have a voice and use it.

His anti-public transport stance means that more subways are never an option for him, and as time passes the traffic jams become worse, his ideas become dated and he faces more and more opposition, and all while his arguments never change. Moses now wants to run a highway through

Washington State Park to ease traffic congestion but there are protests against it - by the people who will be displaced and displeased. They cite the destruction of The Bronx and its community, and of Moses’ plans to clear Greenwich Village of ‘slums’. It was the beginning of the end. His team is more in tune with the city than he is and as much as they try to advise their hero, Moses will not listen.

This is a tale told up and down the UK with moneymen infiltrating and socially-cleansing deprived areas to

make them habitable before selling them off to the wealthy who would not have been seen dead there before.

The grid-like set (Bob Crowley) keeps us on a straight line with the story, while Nick Hytner’s direction works ideally with what is, essentially, an office-based script rather than enhances it. Most of the cast are static as Fiennes pontificates about his urban planning theories to one and all, while outside the office, New York is a non-stop, 24-hour city, moving on and leaving Robert Moses behind.

Fiennes is incredible in the role. He shows him as a man who genuinely has the people at heart and believes he is doing the best for them by providing new roads. Very often, however, they just need their community to be left alone. Everyone else, despite putting in great performances, is a mere bitpart player in this long and wordy play.

At the end, there is a telling statement from campaigner Jane Jacobs, who says that their efforts stopped the Village from being bulldozed but even though they kept their buildings they lost their people and it is now not only unrecognisable from the perspective of the former community, but is one of the most expensive places for real estate on the planet, which leaves us to question whether Moses was right, or the NIMBYs. On May 26th Straight Line Crazy will be broadcast live from the Bridge Theatre to cinemas across the UK. The Bridge Theatre, 3 Potters Fields Park, Bermondsey, SE1 2SG until June 18th.

Falsettos and fascinators rule the waves Falsettos and fascinators rule the waves in Sasha Regan’s all-male performance of HMS Pinafore, playing at Wilton’s Music Hall; a must-visit theatre venue in my humble opinion, writes Katie Kelly.

Having enjoyed many a show by this director at the Union Theatre over the years, my hopes were high, and were not disappointed. It’s a glorious romp this Gilbert and Sullivan satirical operetta, which mocks the pretensions of our social class and political system.

This line rings very true to our current government of ‘none of the talents’: “I grew so rich that I was sent by a pocket borough into Parliament. I always voted at my party’s call, and I never thought of thinking for myself

at all. I thought so little, they rewarded me by making me the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!”.

Several Cabinet ministers sprang to mind as the audience wryly chuckled.

The highly ranked singer of this witticism is one Sir Joseph who offers a social bunk up, in the form of a marriage proposal to Josephine, the daughter of the ship’s Captain. Josephine, however, has lost her heart to a low-ranking ships tar, Ralph Rackstraw. It’s enough to make one call for the smelling salts.

Will true love trump social climbing?

The star-crossed lovers’ duet is definitely a winner.

For all its social satire and its ongoing capacity to hold a mirror to current affairs, Gilbert and Sullivan is essentially escapist entertainment. In

case you think that is a bit frivolous or indulgent in our current situation, it is good to know that the idea for this production came in part from the discovery of an archive from a necessarily all-male performance of it in Stalag 383 German Prisoner of War camp.

The single-gender cast is not a political statement but inspired by the director’s experience of acting in school plays in her girls’ school.

It’s a light touch addition to the fun and a shared joke with the audience.

There was many an arch glance out to the audience at particularly high notes, all of which were received with merriment. In the midst of all this fun, the vocal performances are extremely impressive, the choreography too, and

there are some genuinely poignant moments. Juan Jackson, as Captain Corcoran showed real versatility in the transition from his very bouncy, press-up-filled entrance, to greater depth when he unexpectedly sinks in the social pecking order.

There is convincing emotion in the performances of Sam Kipling and Danny Becker as the class crossed lovers Josephine and Ralph. As ever, the set is simple and does a lot with a little. Some bunks, a few metal boxes, and a small dressing-up box create a world. One I was very grateful to get lost in for a couple of enjoyable hours.

Arts On Christmas Eve in 1805, Vice Admiral Lord Nelson’s body arrived in Greenwich, having been transported back to Britain on HMS Victory after his triumph at the Battle of Trafalgar, writes Michael Holland...

His brought him from the River Thames, where they had docked, to the Royal Hospital for Seamen, now known as the Old Royal Naval College. Nelson was highly regarded as a national hero during the Napoleonic Wars, and was therefore given the honour of a lying in state in the Upper Hall of the Painted Hall, before which his body lay in a small room off the Painted Hall. This chamber was named the Nelson Room.

Greenwich became the focus of the nation’s grief; thousands of people headed to Greenwich to pay their respects. With so many arriving, the local militia had to be brought in to control the crowds.

Now, after an extensive conservation project and reinterpretation, the Old Royal Naval College is relaunching the Nelson Room with an audio-visual experience that explores the story of this national figure.

A newly commissioned bronze sculpture by Antony Dufort, Trafalgar Day at Greenwich: Victory Breaks the Line, will pay tribute to the many sailors who fought at Trafalgar and later became ‘Greenwich Pensioners’ at the Royal Hospital for Seamen.

A new multimedia guide also gives the visitor an insight into the room itself, its history, restoration and artworks. New benches will allow visitors the chance to stop and linger, learning more about Lord Nelson and his relationship to Greenwich.

Entering the room is a sudden change from the echoey atmosphere of the Painted Hall, where guides can be heard on the other side of the hall sharing their knowledge with keen listeners, all staring up in awe at James Thornhill’s brilliant artwork.

Inside the Nelson Room there is a respectful solemnity. Without thinking you tread softly so as not to wake the dead. A circular seat allows you to sit and watch and listen to Nelson’s story.

Nelson In All His Glory atop Nelson’s Column was created looks down at visitors. You cannot help but feel that this is a special place with a special meaning to many.

The names of the HMS Victory crew are there, plus a photograph of John Roome, the seaman who hoisted the signal, ‘England expects that every man will do his duty’. Sadly, after he left the service, John was found destitute selling watercress and herrings on the streets

of Blackfriars and was taken into the Royal Hospital for Seamen where he died. Not a tale of those times so much, but confirmation that not looking after our veterans has a long history - At least not those of officer class. Perhaps, John Roome should have raised the signal, ‘Every man expects that England will do its duty’.

with much honour. You will learn about how, while his body laid in the Nelson Room, a team was dressing the Painted Hall in a manner appropriate for Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson to lie in state: black drapes, ostrich feathers…

desire to create a play about them is there, I give it my all. I don’t believe in making plays just because “it would sell well”…you have to really want to do it. Especially as it’s a considerable undertaking.’

How long does the research and writing usually take? ‘It takes me about a year to create a piece. That covers research, putting the play through many drafts, editing, sharing and so forth. I try to create plays that are built to last, and that means taking time to let the work develop properly.’

And last they do. The author’s first play, “The Silence of Snow: The Life of Patrick Hamilton” is still being performed ten years after he wrote it; “Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope” will have its 150th performance in London this summer.

Mark keeps his casts down to a bare minimum. Himself. I was intrigued to find out why when he writes about people who are often social butterflies - though often people trying to return to the cocoon: ‘It’s not intentional, I just love solo

performance. It offers a chance to connect very deeply to the audience because there’s no fourth wall. Also, I believe that we are all ultimately solo acts in life: in truth we’re all alone at the most profound level, and solo drama is a great way to confront this.’

Both his first two plays were one-man shows where Farrelly took his audience into little known areas of his subjects’ lives to unfold untold secrets. He becomes the character and we believe him.

Nevertheless, Mark Farrelly is not trying to dig behind a man’s public persona for audiences to learn something new about them but to find ‘something they’ve missed. Many people, for instance, never noticed how brave Quentin Crisp was.

But, of course, all my work is really about getting the audience to understand themselves better…’

His most recent work is Howerd’s End, a play about the secret relationship Frankie Howerd had with Dennis Heymer for over 40 years. This is a two-hander but the

writer did not take the eponymous role of Howerd, out front and centre performing his monologues, he played the part of Heymer, who was kept in the shadows and away from the glare of public scrutiny.

He explained that with: ‘If the story simply cannot be told effectively by one person I make it a two-hander.’

But next up for Mark Farrelly will be another one-man show - “Jarman”. This is a story about the film-maker, painter, activist, and writer that is being told for the first time.

What drew you to Derek Jarman? ‘His stunning diaries, Modern Nature and Smiling In Slow Motion, his creative courage. His extraordinary garden at Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, and the awesome way he dealt with a terrifying terminal illness. Every time I encounter his work I feel a surge of courage and inspiration. I decided that feeling needed to be passed on to audiences.’

What areas of Jarman’s life have you focussed on? ‘The play covers the whole

sweep of his 52 year-life…art school, making Super-8 movies in Bankside, his move into feature length films, his passion for gardening, and his experience of HIV and AIDS which took him away from us far too young in 1994. Had he lived two more years his illness would have been treatable. It’s heartbreaking. But the play is foursquare about optimism, hope and joy. As indeed Derek was.’

Jarman will have its first run at the Brockley Jack Studio Theatre, where all Farrelly’s work has been performed: ‘I love it! It’s a fantastic venue, brilliantly run

by Kate Bannister and Karl Swinyard. It also has an intimacy that suits my work.

Mark Farrelly gets under the skin of audiences who he mesmerises whenever he takes on another man’s persona and has you believing that you are not in a theatre watching someone play a part but actually spending time with whoever Farrelly has extensively researched and written a play about. Audiences leave knowing they have seen something special, writes Michael Holland.

Up to date, the writer/actor has written about Quentin Crisp, the author Patrick Hamilton, Frankie Howerd and we can soon enjoy his performance as Derek Jarman. All people, one might say, that have spent areas of their lives in the shadows whilst also maintaining a presence in the spotlight.

I asked Farrelly how he decided on a subject: ‘It’s entirely instinctive…if I feel some kinship with someone, and the

Dulwich stay in play-off spots ahead of Bath clash

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET had to settle for a point against Concord Rangers last weekend as they stayed in the last play-off spot in seventh in the National League South table.

Concord equalised from an 85thminute penalty after Dulwich had come from behind through Taofiq Olomowewe and Danny Mills.

Michael Timlin returned to the Hamlet midfield after almost three months out injured and Mills came back in up front.

Ronnie Vint was suspended and Tyrone Sterling was on international

duty with Grenada.

Darren McQueen was first to threaten for the away side when he shot just over before Reise Allassani tested Beachboys goalkeeper Myles Roberts sixteen minutes in.

Dulwich were then caught on the counter-attack in the 20th minute as Ben Williamson found Nana Kyei and he beat Charlie Grainger with a superb shot from 20 yards.

Gio McGregor was thwarted by Roberts two minutes later but Gavin Rose’s side didn’t have much longer to wait for the equaliser as Mills headed down Jordan Higgs’ corner and Olomowewe finished.

Allassani thought he should have had a penalty but Dulwich went in

front ten minutes before half-time.

Jack Holland picked out McGregor who found Andre Blackman on the left and Mills finished his low cross.

Dulwich lost Timlin to injury with fifteen minutes left. He was replaced

by Luca Levee.

The Hamlet pushed for a clinching goal and Roberts had to bat away a strike from McGregor.

The hosts equalised against the run of play. There was doubt over the penalty award as Grainger appeared to collide with his opponent outside the box. But a penalty was given and Danny Green converted from twelve yards.

The Hamlet had one last chance in the final minute but from McGregor’s

in-swinging delivery to the near post Olomowewe was just off target with his effort.

Dulwich are in the last play-off spot, one point ahead of St Albans City, Hungerford Town and Havant & Waterlooville, who are all on 45 points.

The Hamlet travel to Bath City this Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm.

Brothers on different paths

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY’S NEW assistant coach Jim Troughton is enjoying his new role – as his brother Sam is on a very different career path.

Troughton was working with the side on their final warm-up game against Middlesex as he explained what Sam was up to.

“He’s filming today with Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix for a role in the new Napoleon movie,” Troughton told Surrey’s website.

“I was just chatting to him on my way to Merchant Taylors. He said, ‘I’ll make sure I don’t nibble at too many outside off stump, I’ll leave a few, get myself in, get my feet moving’. There’s always a lot of cricket chat in our WhatsApp group.

I’m sure he’ll be hopping down to The Oval now I’m down this way.”

Sam appeared in the 2019 miniseries Chernobyl. But Jim pursued his cricketing dream, scoring almost 14,000 runs in a sixteen-year career with Warwickshire, as he won two County Championship titles and played six ODIs for England.

He spent the 2021 season as assistant coach with Somerset.

“This role allows me to go up and down the pro staff,” Troughton said.

“Looking after the second team, looking after the younger batters, and hopefully being able to have an impact with some of the first-team batters during the season.”

Surrey’s head coach is Gareth Batty.

Troughton added: “Batts was a year above me in age-group cricket and I came up against him plenty of times over the years. I was on the second intake of the academy that was based in Adelaide under Rod Marsh, so I got to know him a bit more there. He got me out a few times over the years and let me know about it. We had some good tussles in our time and I’ve got a lot of respect for him.

“I know a number of the staff from over the years and I feel like it’s a well-run, hungry club with some good young players coming through.

It’s a big club as well, so it ticked a lot of boxes for me in terms of where I want to work and the impact I feel I can have.”

Southwark boxing duo pass Wembley tests

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk RICHARD RIAKPORHE and Chris Kongo were double trouble for their opponents at Wembley Arena last Saturday night.

Walworth’s Riakporhe, 32, again demonstrated his fearsome power with an eighth-round stoppage of Deion Jumah in their British cruiserweight clash to move his record to 14-0.

Riakporhe dropped Jumah with a right hand in the fourth before finishing the contest with a vicious

body shot four rounds later.

It was Jumah’s first professional defeat in his fifteenth fight.

Riakporhe made a slow start before that knockdown appeared to change the course of the bout.

But Jumah fought back well to edge the fifth round and the next two were even before Riakporhe delivered the brutal body blow in the eighth.

“I’m so happy we got the win,” Riakporhe told Sky Sports. “Big respect to Deion Jumah, he was giving me a lot of problems in there and I had to be patient.

“I was mentally prepared for him to

be awkward and slippery, but I just needed to be patient and wait for the opportunity.

“I got some amazing instructions from Angel Fernandez and my team.

Sometimes you need to say those things because it hits home. We’re on a mission and we want to go places, so I took heed and just came out and did what I needed to do.

“He wasn’t tough, I would say he was more tricky and awkward. He was tough in a way, but I just had to be patient and take my time with him.

Because he is a southpaw, they’re very skilled at counter-punching, so I just

had to be really careful when coming in.

“He was a very tough, durable opponent. I put him down with a heavy shot and he got back up and showed a lot of heart. It just shows what type of calibre of fighter Deion Jumah is and I’ve got a lot of respect for him.

Riakporhe now wants a world title shot.

He added: “Me and my team are going to sit down and we’re going to see what options are available and then go for the next route.

“We definitely want to bring a title back to Great Britain.

“I would say we’ll have two more [fights], maybe back in July and then towards the end of the year. I think realistically it’s looking like the end of the year could be the potential title shot.”

Meanwhile, Bermondsey’s Chris Kongo got back to winning ways as he started his BOXXER/Sky Sports deal with a comfortable points win against Kelvin Dotel.

Kongo, who was on after Riakporhe and after Sky Sports’ live coverage ended, said: “It feels good to be back.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JED WALLACE said he knew at the start of the season Millwall had a “huge chance” to do something special – and his opinion hasn’t changed with just over a month of the campaign left.

The Lions are four points off the playoffs with eight games left, four of them at The Den. Millwall have a core group of players including Wallace, Shaun Hutchinson, Jake Cooper and George Saville who have been involved in a Championship play-off race.

Wallace also picked out Murray Wallace as someone who along with those above will be considered a “great” Millwall player.

Wallace includes Bartosz Bialkowski in that category. The Polish goalkeeper has been one of the Championship’s best since joining the Lions from Ipswich Town in 2019.

Apart from Bialkowski, 34, Hutchinson, 31, and Scott Malone, 31, the rest of Millwall’s current first-choice team are all under the age of 30. Wallace turned 28 last Saturday.

Wallace looked at the profile of the squad at the start of the season and knew the campaign could provide a big

opportunity.

“Being a good Millwall player is more than just having a good touch and things like that. Ultimately everyone is playing in the Championship for a reason, they’re all good players,” Wallace said.

“But you need a strong character to be a really, really good Millwall player.

We’ve got a lot of them in the group.

People like Bart, Coops, Hutch, Muzza is building himself that way – in ten, fifteen years these guys will be talked about as great Millwall players.

“So we’ve got a great opportunity with the squad that we’ve got at the ages we are, and I knew that at the start of the season. I felt like this would be a huge chance when I looked at the ages of the players and the squad that we had.

“With six weeks to go my opinion hasn’t changed from the first of July last year.

“It’s up to us to see what we can do, enjoy the last eight games and see where we can get to.”

While Wallace, Hutchinson, Cooper and Saville were team-mates in League One and have been around the block, Danny McNamara, 23, and Billy Mitchell, 20, are in their first full campaigns as established first-team regulars.

Wallace has a lot of admiration for both, and revealed Mitchell is often the butt of well-meaning dressing-room banter.

“For Billy, at 20, to play every week

in the Championship especially in the middle of the pitch is an amazing achievement, to be honest,” Wallace said.

“Danny’s a little bit more experienced and everyone expected Danny when he came back from his loan [at St Johnstone] to grow into that role, and he really has.

“But Billy, to play every game in midfield with five or six senior lads also competing for that position, he’s kind of been the main player there this year, he’s a credit to himself.

“The pair of them are going to be great Millwall players. They’re already very good Championship players.

“They’re certainly only going to improve.

“Billy gets a lot of stick because he doesn’t say a word in the dressing room and then he goes and speaks to [the media] and he’s character of the year!

If only he was half as charismatic in the flesh as he is in the newspaper it would be quite nice.

“So he does get a fair bit of stick in the changing room. Normally if you get a lot of stick that’s because you’re well-liked.

He’s very popular in the dressing room.”

One thing that has held Millwall back this season is injuries. It is impossible to know where they would be in the table without an injury list that has had every outfield name on it at some point this season.

But Wallace knows that’s probably one consequence of Millwall’s budget, having to take chances on players who have had injury issues previously and so come with a lower price and wage demands.

Mason Bennett is one example, a talented and explosive player who on his day is up there with the best attackers in the league but who has struggled to stay fit over long periods.

“It’s the nature of the beast. When you’re at Millwall, someone like Benno, if he was fit for his whole career, would he be at Millwall now? Probably not.

“Everyone’s there for a reason. You take [Luke] Freeman and Burkey [Oliver Burke], they probably haven’t been playing as much as they would like and then when they are playing they’re not used to it. They come and play games for us and injuries are part and parcel of it.

“What’s been important it that we’ve kept the core group most of the time injury-free. Muzza, Coops, I’ve only missed six weeks, Bart has played every game. Hutchy’s played 25, 26 games, Benik [Afobe] has not missed many.

“Of course we’ve missed strength in depth but we’ve also kept important players fit. Scott Malone’s been fit most of the season.

“This year the manager would probably like to think he’s built the best squad he’s had at Millwall but it

was kind of back to square one because he’s not been able to use that strength in depth at any point. There have been seven or eight out injured most of the season.”

Wallace was out from December to February before he returned with two substitute appearances and then played all but four minutes of Millwall’s last nine games.

He felt the international break came at the right time to allow for a re-charge.

“Six weeks out and then I came back and banged out pretty much nine 90 minutes. Which has been challenging but good, you want to play every minute of every game,” Wallace said.

“We’ve had a lot of injuries so a lot of lads have played every minute of every game. That’s the way everybody wants it to be but with the turnaround of Wednesday to Saturday we struggled [against Stoke].

“It was a tough game. I know the table is the table but there haven’t been many times in the last 20 years when Millwall probably think they have a right to go somewhere like Stoke and win. The size of the club, the quality of their squad and the players they had on their bench.

You only have to look at the players they brought on to see the difference in the strength in depth.

“It’s a credit to how well we’ve done to be where we are at this point in the season.”

Benik aims for 100 Club Striker one goal shy of major career milestone

BENIK AFOBE is out to join the One Hundred Club.

Afobe has scored 99 goals in professional football and could make it a century this weekend at Luton Town.

Millwall striker Afobe has scored 98 goals in club football and he has one in international football, for DR Congo in a 2–0 friendly win over Botswana in 2017.

His first goals in professional football were for Huddersfield Town – where he was on loan from Arsenal – on November 9, 2010.

It was a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy game at Rotherham United. Afobe, then seventeen years of age, scored in the 28th and 72nd minutes in a 5-2 win for his side at the Don Valley Stadium.

Afobe is on nine goals in 33 games for Millwall this season.

“For me, the next one is important because the next one is going to be my 100th goal,” Afobe said. “I’m sitting on 99 career goals, 98 eight club. It would be nice to get to that 100-mark.

“When I started playing football, if you told me I would get to 100 professional goals, it seemed so far away.

“A lot of things have happened, good and bad, and to finally achieve it would be a huge thing for my family and myself.

“To be honest, if I didn’t score again this season and we got promoted, I’d take that.”

Afobe remembers his first goal in professional football. It put the Terriers 3-1 up in that JPT game after a Jordan Rhodes double for Lee Clark’s side.

His father, Ange, was in the stand.

“I was a seventeen-year-old boy. I pointed to my dad in the crowd. I saw him, he was cold, he was wearing his jacket, it was a Tuesday night,” Afobe said.

“It was amazing. Rotherham don’t have that stadium anymore so that’s how long I’ve been in football!

“It was nice to finally achieve something like that because then you realise, yes I’m here now, I’m a professional footballer.

“Long may it continue scoring goals.

“Twelve years later I’m here now. It’s been one heck of a journey, for sure.”

Going for the play-offs is not a new experience for Afobe.

“That season with Huddersfield in League One, we went 20-odd games unbeaten, we finished off strongly, and then we lost in the final against Peterborough,” Afobe recalled.

“That year the Champions League final was at Wembley so we had our final at Old Trafford.

“We’ve got experienced players and players who are taking it game by game, keeping the younger lads on their toes. The best thing about Millwall’s changing room is that we’re a hardworking group.

“Everyone works for each other, there are no egos and everyone just wants to do their best for themselves and the team, which is something that is quite rare nowadays.

“Wherever we finish I would still say it’s a successful season, because I’ve come back here and I’ve got friends for life here.”

The Lions are four points off sixth with eight games left. Expectations have changed with the play-offs now in sight.

But Afobe is not bothered about pressure.

“I feel the pressure every game because I’m my biggest critic,” Afobe said. “So even if we’re playing against a Conference team in pre-season or it’s the cup final, I always feel pressure.

I’m used to it and I think I play better under pressure.

“I play better when the chips are down, sort of thing, or when something’s going against me or the team, that’s when I feel like I need to stand up and be counted and leave my mark on the game.

“Every game I put pressure on myself, so I don’t think one game is bigger than the other. I focus and prepare for each game the same way.

“I said it to my family, even when I spoke to the manager, we get on very

Afobe couldn’t help his team-mates last time out in the 2-0 defeat against his parent club, Stoke City.

He scored both goals in the 2-0 win against Huddersfield in the previous game.

Afobe said: “Before the season started I knew that we were going to play Stoke twice so I wouldn’t be able to play twice. For me, it wasn’t too difficult because I knew what it was.

“I played well against Huddersfield. The team played well, it was probably one of our most complete performances collectively.

“As a forward when you score you want the next game to be as soon as possible. It doesn’t make a difference, I knew that was going to be the case.

“It’s good that the eight games we’ve got we’re still playing for something. We’re chasing something. If you’re not playing for promotion or to avoid relegation you’re sort of just playing to see the season out.

“We’ve got something to play for, which is always nice, and we want that to go on the whole way.”

The clash between third and tenth – with just six points between them – is sold out. The Lions quickly shifted their 1,032 allocation. Luton’s highest crowd of the season was 10,140 in their FA Cup clash against Chelsea.

Coincidentally, the Lions played the Hatters after the first international break of the season. Rowett’s side were on a seven-game unbeaten run and home supporters probably turned up at The Den expecting a routine win. Instead, Nathan Jones’s team stunned the hosts with a deserved 2-0 victory and they have barely looked back since as they aim for an unlikely promotion.

“They’ve done very, very well,” Rowett said. “Nathan and his team have done a fantastic job to get them into third and challenging.

“And what they’ve done really well is they’ve bounced back from poor results. That’s something that we’ve done pretty well this season as well.

“It’ll be a challenge. It’s never an easy place to go. At the same time you’re getting to the business end of the season. Luton have to win games if they want to stay where they are.

We have to try to win games to get to where they are.

“That’s the challenge. It’s a fantastic position to be in for both teams. I don’t think anyone expects either team to be up and around it. But I

Forward back for Wembley date

Millwall forward Olaofe returned from a spell out but couldn’t help Sutton United avoid a 2-0 defeat away to Port Vale last Saturday.

Olaofe came on in the 62nd minute for his first appearance since February 8.

James Wilson and Jamie Proctor gave the hosts a 2-0 lead inside 23 minutes and the U’s couldn’t get back into the game as they dropped to tenth, two points off the play-off places.

Sutton’s next fixture is the EFL Trophy final against Rotherham this Sunday.

Also in League Two, Alex Mitchell and Dan Moss were absent as Leyton Orient defeated Barrow 2-0 at Brisbane Road.

Millwall can close the gap to the Hatters, who are in third place, to just three points with a win at a sold-out Kenilworth Road.

The Lions have struggled recently against Luton. They gave one of their flattest performances of the season

when they lost 2-0 at The Den earlier this season.

Millwall needed a 95th-minute equaliser from George Evans to salvage a 1-1 draw in the corresponding fixture last season.

The fixture was also Neil Harris’ last game in charge, another 1-1 draw in October 2019.

Wallace feels both Luton and Millwall don’t get the praise they deserve.

The sides were rank outsiders for promotion at the start of the season but are in the mix with eight games left.

Only two of Millwall’s remaining games are against sides currently above them in the league, Luton and

AFC Bournemouth on the last day.

But Luton were below Millwall when they met after the first international break of the season and yet left South Bermondsey with a deserved three points.

“When we played Luton, I know we were poor, but I remember saying to Coops [Jake Cooper] and Pearcey [Alex Pearce] after the game how impressed I was with them,” Wallace said. “They looked really strong and if a Bournemouth or someone had played exactly the way Luton had played against us that day everyone would have been talking about how good they were rather than how poor

“But the difficulty is when you are at a Millwall or a Luton you probably don’t get the praise that you deserve at times.

“They’ve been great, they’re a very mobile team and have a lot of players very hungry to succeed. The manager is hungry again to prove himself as a top manager.

“It’s two teams who at the start of the season not many people would have thought would be fighting for the position they’re in.

“It’s two good squads and two good managers and it’s going to be the classic six-pointer, I think.”

The Lions have been in this position before in the Championship, in 201718 under Neil Harris and 2019-20 in Rowett’s first season in charge.

Millwall’s play-off challenges ended on the second-last day of both of those campaigns.

Rowett was asked if there are any lessons from his first campaign.

“I think we’re learning lessons all the time, taking the right information and using it to try to become better. That’s what we always try to do,” Rowett said.

“The lesson we’ve learned is to try and stay very consistent with the players.

Make sure the training is consistent for the players, to give them the proper amount of rest and recovery at this stage of the season.

“There’s still a lot of work required.

We have to make sure we hit that tempo in games that has underpinned all of our best results and performances.

“There are little things you try to do.

You try to focus on what we’re good at. And we try to be relaxed with the players.

“I think the previous couple of seasons, if all the talk and chatter is aimed at the bigger goal rather than each individual game then that tends to distract the players.

“Ultimately we’re in the same space of can we win enough games to remain competitive at the top end of the division? Sometimes no matter what you do, it is going to come down to a few simple factors and not all of those factors are easy to control.

“What we can control is our preparation, the way we train, and the rest will take care of itself.”
