Rent in south London leaps 10% in just a year

Rent in south east London increased by ten per cent last year, according to data released by Spare Room.

Only rooms in the east and north of London were less expensive at £766 and £755, respectively.

Renters in the east saw a 14% increase in the price of their rent last year, compared to 11% in the north.

The average price of renting one room in a house increased from £691 to £758 between February 2021 - 22.

This amount included utility bills and council tax, which are also rising.

However, south Londoners saw the smallest rent rise compared to elsewhere in the capital,

"As we learn to live with Covid 19, it is important to remember that the virus is still circulating," said Dr Andrew Parson, clinical lead for the South East London Integrated Care System (ICS), which has coordinated the local vaccination effort.

"Getting vaccinated offers the best protection against Covid 19, reducing the risk of spreading it to others or getting seriously ill."

1,000,000 people have now had a third jab as of March 15 in Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.

This historic achievement is thanks to the continued efforts of nurses, pharmacists, community groups and NHS volunteers, who have administered vaccines at 84 different sites across the area.

Lambeth local Natasha Neilson, 27, was the millionth south east Londoner to be triple jabbed.

“I’m delighted to be part of the celebration today and represent the one millionth person to receive a Covid 19 booster jab," she said. "I’m looking forward to going away this summer and my travels will be a lot smoother now."

"I’d like to thank all the NHS staff and volunteers who have helped residents like me get protected,” added Natasha, who described having her shot as "wonderful" and "quick".

Those in the centre of the capital face the most expensive rent. The average price for one room in both the east and west of central London topped £1,000 per month for the first time this year.

In west central, renting a room was slightly more pricey at £1,086 per month compared to £1,031 in the east.

Both of these areas saw their rent increase by more than a quarter (26%) between February 2021 - 22.

Spare Room's findings come at a time when households across the UK are facing a cost of living crisis, with the price of energy, food and taxation skyrocketing.

Earlier in the month, London Mayor Sadiq Khan called for rent controls in London. He urged ministers to give him the power to freeze private rents for two years, potentially saving tenants thousands.

“Rising fuel and energy costs – which will hit renters in energy inefficient homes the hardest – are already causing anxiety and stress, with a big rise in the energy price cap due next month,” said Khan.

Stopping further rent rises would “give people a chance to get back on their feet after the pandemic,” he added.

Critics of rent control claim that, while it can help tenants living in areas where rents are rising rapidly, controls can lead to landlords deciding not to rent out their properties as profits are lower.

Still, landlords are likely to remain in the sector as long as London property investment is more attractive than alternative investments.

London currently has 2.4 million private renters, spending on average 43% of their household income on rent, according to the New Economics Foundation.

New Covid cases almost double in Southwark, as government rolls back free testing and restrictions

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk More than 2,000 people tested positive for Covid in Southwark this week - nearly double the previous week’s figure.

2,055 people had a confirmed positive test result between March 11 - 17, according to government figures, showing an increase of 42.1% compared to the previous seven days.

Hospitalisations from the virus were also up - 33 people were admitted to hospital with Covid 19 between March 7 - 13, representing a 17.9% increase. This brought the total amount of patients in local hospitals with the coronavirus to 71 as of March 15.

Eleven of these patients need a mechanical ventilator to support their breathing.

These startling increases come as the government is set to end free lateral flow tests (LFTs) and no longer recommend Covid passes from 1 April, as part of its 'Living with Covid' plan.

Boots has already started selling single LFTs online for £5.99, or four for £17.

There were some 29,559 Covid tests in Southwark between March 10 - 16, reflecting a 14.7% increase compared to

the previous seven day period.

However, SAGE scientists have said removing access to free testing will make it harder for people to take precautionary actions to prevent the spread of the virus.

Covid related deaths in Southwark have not increased, despite the rise.

Between March 11 - 17, no-one died within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test. This shows no change compared to the previous 7 days.

Is it a music festival, dump ... or something more sinister?

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Take a trip through Burgess Park recently and you will have noticed something: dozens upon dozens of raggedy tents, rubbish strewn everywhere and tons of mud.

No, it’s not an attempt by Southwark at Glastonbury, it is the aftermath of an alien invasion in London - well at least the filming of it anyway.

Burgess Park has been the film set for part of a new sci-fi series since February 22, yet it is now packing up and will be gone by the end of the week.

The park has been made "to look like an emergency aid facility, where survivors of [an] alien attack have gathered," said Andrew Pavord, chairman of FilmFixer, the production company which facilitated the filming.

The proposed title of the series, which is being produced by Apple TV, is "Kanji".

In it, "earth is visited by an alien species that threatens humanity’s existence and events unfold in real time," said Andrew.

However, the filming of Southwark's alien invasion has caused some controversy in the local area.

"Park users were shocked to suddenly see a large encampment in the middle of Burgess Park springing up without warning", said Friends of Burgess Park (FOBP) in a statement.

"The lack of information led to various suggestions as to what it could be for.

Was it a music festival or a refugee campsite," they added.

FOBP also voiced concerns about the impact of the filming on the park, as large swathes of ground were covered over with tents, marquees and other structures, as well as being driven and walked over by staff.

They claimed there had been a "loss of green space for park users, damage to the grass and an "impact on wildlife", especially for wild geese who graze on the grass.

A swan was photographed trapped behind the metal fencing of the film set earlier in March, although security freed it later that day. It was unclear how long the bird had been in there.

"There were some minor issues with litter and tyre marks to the grass, which are being easily rectified," said Andrew Pavord. "The team is working to clear away any remaining items used in filming and we hope to see the park back to normal within the next few

days."

"We thank people for their patience and please do let us know if there’s anything else we need to pick up," he added.

Southwark Council highlighted the economic benefits of the filming for the local area, as the production company paid them to rent the space.

"The income from filming is significant, and is a crucial source of funding for council services, following more than a decade of funding cuts," they wrote in a statement.

The council contested this, saying local groups affected by the filming had been "kept updated about the filming" and that "signs and marshals are located around the site to answer questions".

Burgess Park frequently features as a location for films and commercials.

But, the size and scale of the area of the park fenced off for the sci-fi series – several football pitches, as well as the sports centre and astroturf, plus the length of time on-site – three weeks - is unprecedented in recent years.

"A huge amount of filming takes place in our borough and rarely attracts much attention," added the council.

Council makes a whopping £6.6 million from fines in Dulwich Low Traffic Neighbourhood Exclusive

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has raked in £6.6 million pounds in one year from fining drivers in Dulwich's Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN).

Drivers were slapped with more than 120,000 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) between January 11 to December 31 2021. This brought in an astronomical £6,623,517 for the council coffers.

PCNs are issued when drivers go down low-traffic roads where cars are banned, even if this happens accidentally. The fines are issued automatically by cameras that monitor traffic.

The eye-watering amount of fines was generated from five cameras located in Dulwich Village, Townley Road and Burbage Road.

One camera in Dulwich Village, northbound towards Pickwick Road, produced a staggering £3,892,194 in fines throughout 2021.

This was followed by another camera on the Townley Road Junction at Calton Avenue, which brought in £1,472,502 the same year.

"The fact that they [the council] are making so much money shows that the scheme is not working," said Clive Rates, Conservative councillor candidate for Dulwich Village. “Traffic hasn’t evaporated as promised, otherwise there wouldn't be

all these fines. They [the council] never told us their aim was to create a cash cow, but they have ended up with one," he added.

The council said the cameras were introduced to reduce through traffic in Dulwich, a "long-standing issue" for residents. “Enforcement is necessary to support the work that’s being done to improve air quality, road safety and accessibility," said Cllr Catherine Rose, cabinet member for transport, parks and sport. "We want to help local people to reclaim their streets."

Eighty per cent of fines were issued to vehicles not registered in Southwark said the councillor. "Local compliance has improved over the past two years and we have amended the times of the restrictions and improved signage for drivers as part of making the scheme permanent," she added.

Dulwich's LTN was first introduced in March 2020 amid the pandemic.

Clive also claimed the benefits of the scheme, such as encouraging cycling and reducing emissions, had not been proved by the council. "In practice, people have had to make longer journeys, and use roads that are already busy, which slows down buses and increases emissions.

Traffic has been displaced to outside schools. This is the reason there is a great deal of anger out there about what has happened," he said.

claimed it could not respond to the statement as it is "too general."

"What evidence or air quality monitoring has been provided to support this statement - where are these certain areas?" they asked.

Another Conservative candidate for Dulwich, Tristan Honeyborne, alleged there was a lot of hostility to the scheme from locals. "On doorsteps, people are voicing their opposition [to the LTN] every single week," said Tristan. "Some of the most affected people are the elderly and less mobile."

He called on the council to reinvest the six million raised from fines into zero-carbon public transport, alongside improving pedestrian streets and road layouts, and do away with the LTN entirely.

Only five per cent of journeys in Dulwich are by public transport due to poor provision in the area, according to One Dulwich, a local anti-LTN campaign group.

This means fewer people have the option of ditching their cars.

Tristan alleged the LTN had worsened bus times by diverting traffic onto longer routes and increasing congestion.

The council said they were creating "active travel routes to bus interchanges and train stations to make them more accessible. However, strategic investment is TfL's responsibility," they added.

It comes a week after the News reported that over £278,000 in fines were issued in just six months on Goldsmith Road in Peckham.

Southwark has been named as the worst borough for bicycle storage spaces, as campaigners highlight the 'bizarre' places they are forced to store their bikes.

Around 8,500 cyclists in Southwark are currently waiting for a secure space to store their bicycles.

More than 60,000 people across the capital are on a waiting list for a secure bike hanger, with Southwark topping the list.

These findings were revealed in a Freedom of Information (FOI) request by the Clean Air Wins Campaign, which aims to promote zero-emission transport.

The inner city borough of Southwark is followed closely by Camden, Islington, Lewisham and Lambeth whose waiting lists also stretch into the thousands.

These figures come as the #ThisisAwkard campaign is highlighting the "bizarre" places Londoners are forced to store their bikes because of the lack of bike hangers.

Bicycles hanging off balconies and parked in toilets have been shared online

by Twitter users as part of the campaign.

Other pictures submitted so far include someone who is asleep in a bed next to their bike and a bike being stored close to the oven.

Tweets using the #ThisisAwkard hashtag have come from cyclists across London in Islington, Hackney, Hounslow, Lambeth, Lewisham, Tower Hamlets and Greenwich.

"Who wants to heave a bike up flights of stairs?" asked Eilidh Murray, Cycle

Islington campaign coordinator. "The feeling of having locked up a bike to a lamppost overnight and wondering if it will still be there in the morning is one many of us will recognise and dread."

The Clean Air Wins campaign is calling on councillor candidates to commit to providing a cheap, convenient and secure bike hangar space for all residents that need one ahead of local elections being held in May. "Forcing people to do the ‘cycle salsa’ at home isn’t just an inconvenience, it's utterly unfair given the abundance of space set aside for cars on our streets," said Oliver Lord, UK head of Clean Cities Campaign.

"By not delivering the secure bike parking we need, London’s councillors are failing residents who want to do the right thing and neglecting their duties to reduce air pollution, tackle the climate crisis and help prevent the 400 bike thefts that occur every week," he added.

The FOI from Clean Air Wins shows that there is a waiting list of 60,715 people wanting to hire a bike hangar across London’s 32 boroughs.

This means nearly three times as many people are waiting for a space, as there are places to hire in bike hangars - with only 22,592 spaces available.

The number of people on the waiting list in London has risen 28% from 47,578 since a study conducted six months ago.

Yet the true figure is are likely to be even higher as it only shows those who have registered for a bicycle storage space, meaning they underestimate demand.

More than half of Londoners see a lack of cycle parking as a key deterrent to cycling, according to analysis by TfL.

‘We lost something beautiful’ - documentary-maker gives moving tribute to the Elephant Bingo Hall

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk The maker of a Bafta-nominated film about the Elephant bingo hall has given an emotional tribute to the iconic shopping centre.

Jo Prichard’s documentary ‘The Palace’ looks at the regulars who loved and relied on the hall, and the struggle of the owner to save it from demolition.

“The shopping centre was very unique and very London,” said Jo, who first got to know the area as a student living on Walworth Road. “Over time and because of the demographics, it had become very important to so many different groups and people.”

“Everyone was together under one roof,” she said.

During the filming of her documentary, Jo became incredibly fond of the bingo hall and the people who used to visit it.

“I enjoyed being there so much, it is such a warm place physically and interpersonally,” she said. “I could see how people could spend a whole day there. It was very easy to approach and

Patrick dances on stage with vistors on the last night of the bingo hall talk to people, the place had its own ecosystem.”

Every day hundreds of regulars would visit the bingo club to relax, socialise, play bingo, dominoes, gossip and party together. There were also cheap dinners for £1 and free tea and coffee.

Jo attributed the vibrancy and warmth of the bingo club to the former owner Patrick, who created “such a warm atmosphere” and had the “goodwill” of

guests.

“Patrick was an amazing leader and figurehead,” she says, “it was a lot about what he built and the tone he set.”

One key thing Jo wished to highlight in the documentary was the community that had grown around the bingo hall.

“At times, there were so many people, of all ages, sometimes three generations of the same family, it was absolutely rammed.

“The big events at the bingo hall were big events in people’s lives,” she added.

Such a social space played a hugely important role in the local community believed Jo. “I hadn’t realised quite how important it was for older generations and the way they socialise. Meeting face to face is everything for them ... the hall was like a giant living room to hang out with people in.

“But to do this you need big social spaces and these are becoming rarer and rarer. Space in central London is too expensive now,” she added.

Joe described the bingo hall as a “lifeline” for people, especially those who are elderly or single.

“Because it is bingo, essentially gambling, it is easy to write this off or find reasons why the hall should go, but we should acknowledge that it was providing vital services. The bingo hall picked up flack, but it gave people cheap, hot meals and in some ways provided social services.

“I wanted to celebrate the positives of what it did with the film.”

Many of the regulars she was still in

touch with had struggled during the pandemic said Jo. “Everyone misses what they had.”

The Palace was permanently closed in 2019, after a long battle to save the bingo hall.

While not wanting to use the documentary as a platform, Jo was critical of the new developments springing up in Elephant and Castle.

“Flats have been built to make money, and everything around the flats then has to cater to changes in demography.

The new spaces that have come after are cafes, restaurants, gyms places for younger people with a bit of money.”

When asked if the community around the Bingo Hall could be restored, Jo said it was “hard not to be sceptical.”

“The area is changing beyond recognition, it seems like it has undergone the most drastic development in London in recent times.”

“The Bingo Hall was a moment in time of the Elephant and Castle.”

Peckham's Finest star hints at 'second series' Exclusive

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk One star of ITV2's hit show Peckham's Finest has hinted at a second series in a revealing interview with the News.

Chantel Wedderburn, the fashionista who featured in the first season, said "nothing has been confirmed one hundred per cent, but I believe talks are going on when to fit it into the TV schedule."

"ITV is very much interested in a season two," she added.

Now seven months pregnant, Chantel says she was called by the show's producers in January to find out when her second child was due.

"They wanted to get an idea when my baby is coming, so they can fit it around filming or even get it into the series," she claimed.

"Aside from that we haven't heard anything concrete."

The 42-year-old said she would be "gassed" for a second season of Peckham's Finest.

"I feel like we deserve it," she said. "In season one, everyone was not really sure, it was like they had one foot in, one foot out.

"Now we can all see it, feel it, understand what it's all really about."

"I feel like season two can go further," she added.

One thing Chantel wished the second season would do is to "highlight and showcase Peckham a lot more."

"The feedback I got from people who grew up around here is that the show did not reflect the Peckham they knew, the producers forgot the original roots," she said.

"It was a big opportunity to show Peckham in a good light and it was not fully taken."

focused more on a broader section of people from the area.

"Anyone that doesn't know Peckham would be oblivious, but those who know it have issues with some of the people on the show."

"There is a lack of authentic characters."

Still, Chantel was "80% happy" with the show.

"Peckham's finest was a great opportunity that came out of nowhere and, despite everything, I enjoyed taking part, being part of it and learning."

She has stayed in touch with many other members of the show and they have gone on to form close friendships, especially with MoJo, Mark, Isla and Gilly - people, Chantel says, she "never would have crossed paths with normally".

"I got along with everyone, but there were not many opportunities to be with the other characters, other than a few little events and parties, most of our stories didn't cross over," she said.

Chantel admitted there were times during filming when she had "uncomfortable conversations" with other members of the cast.

One particularly tense moment was when she voiced her "confusion" about the "different terminologies" surrounding transgender people.

"MoJo got quite upset and a little bit defensive because I wasn't fully embracing all the different titles automatically.

"She thought this meant I had an issue with her being bisexual."

Still, Chantel said these were "positive experiences as they enabled us to understand one another better.

"I am a bit older than most of the cast, although I don't necessarily look it, I am the only one that is a parent," she said.

"My attitude and character are different to theirs."

Chantel also added that the way the show was edited, where "big conversations" were taken down

to "snippets", meant it was easy for "people to be misconstrued ... when everyone who was there knows the conversation was not that bad.

"But I get it, TV producers know what they are looking for, they know what sells when it comes to drama, falling out and screaming matches," she continued.

Reflecting back on the first season, Chantel said it "changed a lot from start to finish."

"Obviously none of us had any experience with TV, so when we started there was a sense of naivety.

"We were not one hundred per cent sure what the show was going to be about, what it would look like and what they were looking for."

Yet, as filming progressed, Chantel built up her confidence in front of the camera and, after a while, "started to forget it was there."

Her highlight of the first season was getting engaged, although sharing it with the nation was "something else".

Chantel was upset by the negative reactions on social media about the show's all-black cast, which she revealed was largely "unintentional" as all the non-black cast "pulled out last minute."

"If our show was about something negative and it was all black, people would be all for it.

"And what about shows in diverse areas that have an all-white cast, no-one bats an eyelid," she added.

After the show, Chantel said people "come from all over England" to visit her clothes shop, Best of Both Boutique, and she routinely gets stopped by fans in the street.

"At first it was a bit awkward, then I started enjoying the attention, thriving off it, and loving the limelight," says Chantel, who is planning to create her own show with her partner.

"Obviously people are not running down the road screaming like I am Beyonce," she laughed.

"Well at least not yet.”

Peckham to lose one of its banks as numbers decline in branch

The HSBC branch on Rye Lane will close its doors for good on August 2.

Seven other closures of HSBC branches in south London are set to happen throughout the summer months, affecting around 400 staff.

These are in Peckham, Sidcup, Eltham, New Malden, Beckenham, Wandsworth and Kingston upon Thames.

HSBC is not the last bank in Peckham, and a Post Office, where people can withdraw money free of charge, is 0.3 miles away.

All 400 staff will be deployed to new roles within 15 miles of their homes, said a spokesperson for the bank.

A total of 69 branches will be shut in the UK, as HSBC says more customers are switching to online banking.

HSBC said less than 50% of its customers now regularly used its branch network, with footfall dropping sharply over the past five years.

Yet, "millions of people in the country are still unable to use online banking", say consumer group Which.

Using online services can be challenging for the elderly or those in more unstable conditions, who lack consistent internet or a fixed address.

Nearby shops and the high street are also hit hard by bank closures as visitors are left without a way of accessing cash locally, according to Which.

"The way people bank is changing – something the pandemic has accelerated," said HSBC spokesperson Jackie Uhi. “Our branches continue to support people with their more complex banking needs, but the way we can do this has also evolved, with the addition of banking hubs, community pop ups and continued use of the Post Office network."

The closures, she added, would enable the bank to invest more in locations where customers are still using physical branches, and invest in digital and mobile services.

In January 2021, HSBC announced 82 closures, reducing its network of branches from 593 to 511.

Only 441 will be left by the end of 2021, with 96 of these offering a full range of services in-store.

This week's announcement is the latest in a series of closures by a variety of banks in the UK, including NatWest, TSB, Barclays, Lloyds and Halifax.

Cherished camberwell pub to reopen its doors

The Cambria has undergone £600k revamp

A beloved local pub will reopen after a much-anticipated relaunch.

The Cambria, on Kemerton Road in Camberwell, will open its doors to punters today, Thursday March 24.

It will boast a revamped bar and dining area, new upstairs function room and large outdoor beer garden, alongside a dedicated projector room for sporting events.

General manager and veteran publican Nadine Prankard said the Cambria would be a hub for the local community.

"We want to give people their pub back," she said. "We want the Cambria to be a thriving part of all the chimney pots in the surrounding area.

"Not just a pub, but a place to pop in and say hello," she added.

Nadine urged locals to join them on the pub's opening night. "Come meet us, come say hello," she said. "It is your space back."

Living on-site, Nadine said she was "really excited" to form a bond with those in the area, and had already been "overwhelmed" by the public response to their plans.

The large, well-lit new garden has

more than a dozen tables, and is sponsored by Brixton Brewery, which has three beers at the Cambria.

In the swanky, wooden-clad function room upstairs, Nadine hoped to host corporate events, birthday parties, comedy nights and the occasional life drawing class.

The layout has also been shifted around to create a family-friendly

space.

A new menu getting back to "classic pub food" will also be on offer at the pub.

Dishes will include Brixton Brewery battered fish and chips, prime Cumberland sausage and creamy mash, besides a novel plant-based shepherd's pie.

"We're pushing to have the best ADVERTORIAL

roast in the area," said head chef Harry Hutchinson. "Quality cuts of meat, vegetables, giant Yorkies, you name it."

Harry, who has previously worked at 5-star hotels, such as Claridge's and The Dorchester, said he was "really looking forward to opening up the doors and getting going."

The Cambria was closed in November 2021, so new owners Prospect Pubs & Bars could make the £600,000 upgrade to the pub.

Nadine said the local community had feared the worse after the pub's doors were first boarded up two years ago.

"People were worried the building would get developed and become a block of flats," she said. "The minute they heard we were relaunching, the pub was the talk of the town."

She says members of the public have been peeking through the windows on an almost daily basis, waiting for the reopening of the pub.

Popular tennis coach in Dulwich Park allegedly disappears to Spain with thousands of pounds, leaving parents and staff dismayed Exclusive

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A coach is alleged to have stolen thousands of pounds from parents and staff in Dulwich, and fled to sunny Spain.

The man was a franchisee of Teddy Tennis, an international company, which teaches tennis to toddlers aged between two and five.

Starting in the spring of 2021, the man is believed to have asked parents to transfer money for their child's tennis lessons directly into his bank account - bypassing Teddy Tennis's rules - and withheld the wages of other staff who were working under him. He had been giving tennis lessons at Dulwich Park since 2020.

Parents and staff say they were dismayed when in September last year the coach did not show up to work one day and stopped answering their flurry of calls. Parents and the company owner of Teddy Tennis told the News they had not seen him since.

It has been alleged by the man's colleagues that he went to Spain. He is thought to have made off with thousands of pounds from parents and other members of staff.

Victoria Lazariuk, whose two and four year old children were having classes with Teddy Tennis, handed over more than £600 to the man. She says she is one of the ten "not very happy" parents and claims there are many others that no-one knows about. "We were totally taken for a ride," she said.

The £600 has not been returned to Victoria, despite her complaints, with Teddy Tennis claiming it "cannot help" parents who did not pay through the official website as it cannot be determined how much they are owed.

"It is disturbing that Teddy Tennis hasn't sorted out the mess their coach made," says Victoria. "It is clear it is all about money for them."

Victoria claimed the incident raised wider concerns about how Teddy Tennis vets and oversees its coaches.

"You trust the coaches that are affiliated with this company [and] you trust that processes are in place to stop stuff like this from happening. Clearly this is not the case at Teddy Tennis," she alleged.

Following this incident, Teddy Tennis founder Stephen Bean said the company would be "more diligent" with credit checks of its employees in the future and assured customers that all coaches met "stringent standards", including criminal background checks.

Coach Roland who worked for the man at Teddy Tennis for nearly a year says he is owed more than £4,000 in unpaid wages. Despite receiving his earnings

for spring, he began to get suspicious when his wages were not forthcoming in summer.

"I was basically fooled," he says, "I was working like a dog for months, when I could have been with someone who would actually pay me.

“But I trusted the company, it was a reputable name, so I worked without wages, saying nothing."

Roland claimed there were several other staff members who had not been paid large sums of money, yet they had "moved on" or were not coming forward because of the "stigma".

Roland alleged that Teddy Tennis had denied liability for their franchisee's behaviour and were not doing enough to support those affected.

"They should be more active in chasing [him]" said Roland. "Teddy Tennis is washing their hands of the problem."

Roland wrote to MP Helen Hayes last

year and filed a county court claim against the man, in a bid to get the £4,538 that is owed to him.

In response to these allegations, Teddy Tennis founder Stephen Bean said the company had closed down their operation as soon as they were made aware of the issue and refunded parents for any unpaid lessons.

"To show goodwill" to the parents who directly transferred money into the man's bank account, Mr Bean said "if and when we restart in Dulwich Park, we will give parents credits for lessons."

He cited the company's 20 years of experience and that they had "never had a problem of this nature."

"This is very much one off case," Mr Bean added.

He said that "this particular person" had cost his company thousands of

pounds through reimbursing parents who had paid the company directly, and lost business time.

"We are completely out of pocket on top of all this," said Mr Bean. "It was a dark day for me when we found out.

"It was the worst thing that could have happened to us," he added.

However, he said they would "love to restart" their operations in Dulwich in the near future.

"We would love to hear from anyone who may be interested in running Teddy Tennis in Southwark or just becoming a Teddy Tennis coach," he said.

"The ideal candidate would be either a sports coach, early years professional, sporty mums wanting to return to work or someone just wanting to do something different."

Ayannuga's family took a legal case to the High Court against the makers of the household drain blocker.

His wife, Oluyomi, blamed manufacturers One Shot Products Limited for the tragedy, alleging their product had reacted with another chemical in the drain to create the lethal gas.

Mrs Ayannuga claimed the unblocker “materially contributed” to the formation of the gas and was “defective”.

She wanted millions in compensation for her 58-year-old husband, herself and children.

One Shot Products Limited argued the hydrogen sulphide likely originated from a sewage pipe and was not caused by their product.

However, a senior High Court judge dismissed Mrs Ayannuga's claim on 16 March, calling the incident a "tragic and unforeseeable accident".

The High Court heard that, after an unsuccessful attempt to unblock it with a plunger, Gbadegeshin poured the drain unblocker down the plughole. He then disconnected some sink pipework and left the kitchen, leaving the acid to take effect.

Gbadegeshin later returned to the kitchen and crashed to the floor.

Hearing the bang, Mrs Ayannuga called her husband, who went into the kitchen and collapsed, followed by his wife who also fainted.

Both husband and wife were "overcome" by the fumes and lost consciousness.

The family's barrister Simeon Maskrey QC claimed the drain unblocker must have reacted with lime sulphur in the sink, creating the deadly gas.

But lawyers for One Shot Products Limited said this was "implausible" and

that it was more probable gas from the sewer had flooded the kitchen.

In her ruling, Justice Yip said the Ayannuga family's claim that the drain unblocker caused the toxic gas would depend on the presence of lime sulphur, which is found in certain beauty and pet products.

However, she rejected the possibility lime sulphur was present in the sink.

“The claimant’s case that lime sulphide had been poured down the sink after it became blocked is implausible," said Justice Yip. She added: “On the other hand, the defendant’s theory that sewer gas escaped from the waste system when Mr Gbadegeshin removed the pipe is scientifically sound and is consistent with what is thought to have occurred in other tragic and rare instances.”

Previous cases of hydrogen sulphide poisoning in homes have been linked

to gases released when people unblock sinks, she continued.

This means Mr Gbadegeshin's removal of part of the sink pipework was more likely to be behind the tragic accident.

Justice Yip concluded the drain blocker was "coincidental" and did not make a "material contribution" to Gbadegeshin's death or the injuries sustained by Ayannuga.

The judge also found the One Shot product – which now requires a licence to purchase following concerns about unlawful use – is not defective or unsafe.

Justice Yip said: “The Ayannuga family have my utmost sympathy.

“I extend that sympathy also to those who mourn the loss of Mr Gbadegeshin.

“I know the trial was not easy for Mrs Ayannuga and the outcome will be bitterly disappointing."

Peckham family lose multi-million pound court case after dad suffered 'catastrophic' brain damage in plumbing tragedy

Adeniyi Ayannuga collapsed and was left permanently brain damaged after a friend poured some One Shot Instant Drain Cleaner down a blocked kitchen sink at his Peckham flat.

His "catastrophic" injuries were caused by inhaling hydrogen sulphide - a toxic gas which can kill in a single breath.

Plumber Tito Gbadegeshin, who was a colleague of Ayannuga, went to help his pal clear the blockage on New Year’s Day 2015, but died after also inhaling the toxic fumes.

March planned in support of Rotherhithe lockdown hero threatened with deportation

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Rotherhithe residents are set to take to the streets against the possible deportation of a former local shopkeeper who has been threatened with being deported from the UK.

Vimal Pandya, who worked for years at Halai General Stores off Rotherhithe Street until he was barred from having a job by the Home Office, is currently appealing a government decision that would send him back to India after more than eleven years in London.

Mr Pandya went through a series of complicated and expensive setbacks with the Home Office in the years after arriving in the UK on a student visa in 2011. He has been living in the UK without permission since 2015 but has become a hugely important part of his local community in Rotherhithe, helping out dozens of vulnerable families in the pandemic and getting a letter of thanks on behalf of the Queen for his efforts.

Mr Pandya was investigated by the Home Office last year and is appealing the decision made in February to send him back to India.

So far more than 130,000 people have signed on a petition calling on the government to let him stay and a fundraiser organised to help him with his legal costs has raised over £13,000.

This Saturday, March 26 demonstration - which is set to be joined by local MP Neil Coyle - will set off from Station Road on Rotherhithe Street at

2pm, before heading down Rotherhithe Street and into the residential areas where many of those he helped live, before getting to Lavender Pond and turning back to Edinburgh Court on

Bermondsey care home apologises after woman with dementia trapped in cupboard for hours

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey care home has apologised after staff failed to report a resident with dementia missing for two hours after she got stuck in a cupboard.

The woman was left dehydrated and bruised, according to an independent report into the March 2021 incident at Tower Bridge Care Home, which looks after residents on behalf of Southwark Council. Police were called and the woman was taken to hospital for treatment, where she stayed for around a month.

Sadly, the woman, who previously was "fully mobile", according to the report, has gone downhill and "is now cared for in bed and requires full support with all her care needs and with food and fluid."

The council was ordered to pay £1,300 to the woman - known as Miss Y in the report by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman - and her daughter, identified as Miss X.

Inspectors said: "Staff noticed Miss Y was missing from the care home. The police were called over two hours later, after staff had searched for her. Miss Y was found by police in a locked store room in the home, several hours after she was last seen by care home staff.

"Care home staff did not tell Miss X that Miss Y was missing until after the police attended the care home.

Miss Y was admitted to hospital where it found she was dehydrated with bruising on her head."

HC-One, which manages the home, apologised to daughter Miss X and said it would make changes to ensure these mistakes did not happen again.

A spokesperson added: "Our priority is to deliver the best possible care for each resident we serve, so we deeply regret that on this occasion mistakes were made which led to us falling short of the standards residents and their loved ones rightfully expect and deserve.

"We apologise to the resident and their family for the distress which this caused."

Mr Pandya said he had "fire in [his] belly" and was prepared to fight for his right to stay in the UK and help more people in Rotherhithe.

Mr Pandya said: "The community has come together in an incredible way. I am very grateful and want to thank everyone who has signed and shared my petition and donated to the

crowdfunding campaign. I appreciate everything you do for me.

"With all your support and help, I really hope and strongly believe my appeal will be successful and I will be able to continue to help the community in return. I have a fire in my belly and I want to achieve so much more now and do many more great things for the community and our country that has rallied and supported me so much."

Mr Pandya added his thanks to everyone who had supported him so far.

He said: “Our home secretary, Priti Patel, always says ‘join the police force and be the difference in your community’. Despite my immigration status I did contribute and make a difference in our community, because I love my community and people around here.”

March organisers said: "We wish to show that we are not prepared to wait patiently and certainly not quietly. Vimal excelled himself during the pandemic, reaching out to many many of our households, getting their provisions and providing emotional support.

"Today he is not able to work nor is he even allowed a role as a volunteer.

His life is on hold and his destiny in the hands of the Home Office, a far cry from the jubilation felt by him and so many in his neighbourhood when the Buckingham Palace's letter of thanks arrived for him last year.

The free 'Easter in Wonderland' event will take place on 16 April from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Castle Square in Elephant and Castle.

Friends, families and the local community will be able to celebrate the long Easter weekend at a range of events inspired by Lewis Caroll's magical fairy tale.

There will be workshops, performances, music and food for everyone to try throughout the day.

Visitors to Castle Square can head

into the superbly instagrammable Wonderland themed dome and join the Mad Hatter and White Rabbit Easter Bunny for a tea party, who will

also be handing out chocolaty treats and posing for pictures.

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Residents and businesses in Southwark are set to receive ultrafast, fibre-optic broadband over the next five years, the council has announced.

Rotherhithe and Bermondsey are first in line to enjoy the gigabit-per-second speeds, with the remainder of the borough having their internet upgraded by 2027.

This turbo-charging of Southwark's internet is thanks to a new agreement between Southwark Council and Openreach, which will see £20 million invested in the borough's digital infrastructure.

The money will be used to replace existing copper cables with "full fibre" optics that can deliver speeds of up to 1 gigabit - 10 times faster than average speeds today.

“The future is digital and we have made it a priority to ensure Southwark’s

residents and businesses are among the best connected in London," said Cllr Kieron Williams, leader of Southwark Council.

"In the past Southwark experienced the worst broadband speeds in London and is now the third most connected borough," he added.

However, there are doubts surrounding the necessity of super-fast internet speeds.

"Your average British household doesn't actually need all that much speed," writes Dan Howdle at internet comparison site Cable.

"Everyday uses such as surfing the internet or streaming movies and TV only start to tax your average connection when a few people in the household are doing them at the same time."

Still, he pointed out that ultrafast broadband might be appropriate for gamers or households watching multiple 4K films.

Ultrafast broadband brings internet speeds of 360 - 1000 megabits per second (Mbps), enough to stream between 50 and 150 HD movies at the

same time.

Currently the average broadband speed in Southwark is 51 Mbps, although there are significant variations across the area.

The council have said the investment will help resolve the poor connectivity issues Southwark has faced over the years, with Rotherhithe currently identified as one of the worst connected areas in the borough.

Connectivity dead zones in areas such as Peckham and Dulwich will also be tackled by the project.

Compared to copper wire the new fibre-optic cables are also resistant to bad weather and far less likely to slow down or drop out.

"Better connectivity plays an important part in the long-term economic development of the borough, as we bounce back from the pandemic," said Cllr Williams.

Theatre hosts street party in Camberwell

After receiving money from the council’s Cultural Celebrations fund they are offering family-friendly entertainment including performances and drama workshops free of charge outside the Jessie Duffett TRA Hall along Wyndham Road.

Between 12pm and 5pm the outside space will be transformed and all are welcome. Blue Elephant Theatre’s young adult group After Hours, supported by a Neighbourhoods Fund grant, will be performing an original piece of theatre reflecting on the last two years.

This is the second street party the Blue Elephant has hosted, after a successful first

party in September 2021. The party will be an opportunity for all the community to learn more about what Blue Elephant has on offer and meet the team.

Blue Elephant Theatre will be open during the street party, providing bathroom and other facilities.

COUNCIL REDACTS ENTIRE DOCUMENT REQUESTED

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A public request for information about the Aylesbury Estate development has been met with a muted response by Southwark Council.

The Freedom of Information (FOI) request was made by Jerry Flynn (pictured) of the 35% Campaign, which fights to ensure 35% affordable housing is provided in new housing developments.

It asked for the council to make public what was discussed at a meeting with developers about the future of the Aylesbury Estate.

In their response to the FOI, the council blacked out every single sentence of the document, which contained the minutes of the cabinet meeting that took place on 18 January 2021.

The only readable sentence was: "in summary the proposed further variations to the DPA [Development Partnership Agreements] are as follows."

Everything else that followed was hidden from view.

Possible changes to the agreement between the council and developers Notting Hill Genesis (NHG) about the redevelopment of the Aylesbury were under discussion at the meeting.

Topics are thought to have been the financial terms of the deal and social housing, although this cannot be verified.

"There is an overriding public interest in releasing this report," wrote Jerry in the FOI. "The cost of the Aylesbury regeneration to the council and the impact this will have on its finances and Housing Investment Programme is a matter that should be subject to public scrutiny."

Members of the public are entitled to request information from public authorities, such as Southwark Council, under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

However, requests can be refused on a number of grounds, such as if the information is commercially sensitive, costs too much to gather or prejudices

public affairs, although this must be weighed against the public interest.

"After careful consideration, we withhold some of the information falling under your request," replied the council to Jerry's FOI. They cited the fact that the information was "confidential" and "commercially sensitive" as the reasons for not revealing it.

"Disclosure would adversely affect the confidentially and damage economic interests which we have identified," they added.

The council also said public interest was not enough of a reason to publicise what

was discussed at the meeting.

"By way of explanation, the ‘public interest’ is not the same as what might be of interest to the public," they said. " In carrying out a Public Interest Test we consider the greater good or benefit to the community as a whole if the information is released or not."

"The ‘right to know’ must be balanced against the need to enable effective government, deliver efficient policing and to serve the best interests of the public," they added.

The council also extended the time they needed to respond to Jerry's FOI, due to

the "complexity of the request".

Responses should typically be made within 20 working days under the law, yet they asked for an extra five days.

In a statement, Jerry said he was "disappointed" about the council's response.

"It’s great if Southwark gets more social rented housing as council homes, but Notting Hill Genesis were supposed to pay for the social rented housing themselves," he said. "Now it looks as if Southwark will be paying the bill, with money it could be spending on council housing elsewhere in the borough.

"We will be looking at Southwark’s reasons for withholding the information and considering what action to take next," Jerry added.

Commenting on the post on Twitter, one user wrote: "The Aylesbury's so-called regeneration should be transparent.

"Thousands of council homes have been run into disrepair and are being demolished all while the waiting list continues to increase.

Southwark residents deserve full transparency."

But Cllr Rebecca Lury, cabinet member for finance, performance & democracy said they will release more information, telling the News: “These redactions are temporary and we intend to publish

the full report when the revised DPA has been agreed between us and Notting Hill Genesis.”

An agreement to redevelop the Aylesbury Estate was first struck between the council and NHG in 2014.

Further changes were approved in 2020, which saw the council pay NHG £210.8 million for 581 council homes, while leaving housing for the open market with the developer.

Once the work is complete, the new development on the Aylesbury will provide 122 homes, 23 of which will be socially rented housing offered to over-55s.

The remaining 99 properties will be rented at market rate by Notting Hill Genesis's arm Folio London.

"We want to ensure the regeneration of the Aylesbury estate represents the best interests of local residents and businesses," said John Hughes, group director of development at Notting Hill Genesis.

"Residents have been at the forefront of informing the design of the new homes, attending regular meetings throughout the construction process," he added.

This input included selecting the tiles and colours to be used in their new homes, as well as giving "valuable feedback" on bathroom fittings."

There will also be a new library, named after the local poet, campaigner for equality and first female black programme maker at the BBC, Una Marson. It will contain a workspace, 21 workstations and a dedicated children's area.

Plus there will be a new health centre, offering services from Guy's and St Thomas' and GP surgeries, a pharmacy and new cafe.

"These state-of-the-art buildings will offer better and essential services to our local residents," said Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness.

"The over-55s homes are among the new social rent homes available on the site, built so residents can afford to stay in the area they know and love,” she added.

Southwark Council came under fire last month for spending a further £30 m on redeveloping the Aylesbury estate, although they claimed this money was already planned.

Some locals get first glimpse at the new look Aylesbury Estate

The library, health centre and homes being built on the estate were opened up by developers Notting Hill Genesis to a select few last week (10 March).

The event, which took place at the partially constructed library on Thurlow Street, was the first opportunity for residents and other attendees to view the new homes they will be moving into.

Members of the over-55s residents group, who have been active in shaping the properties, councillors from Southwark Council and staff from Notting Hill Genesis and Vistry Partnerships, site contractors, were present.

"I’m really looking forward to moving in as soon as possible," said Jean Bartlett, one

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A young Ukrainian couple in need of refuge has been prevented from boarding a plane to London because of "horrible government administration".

Kamil Salmanov and his partner Natalia Lepekha were invited by Fiona Taylor to stay at her house on the Pepys Estate, in Deptford bordering Rotherhithe, as part of the government's homes for Ukraine scheme.

Yet, when Kamil arrived at the

airport on Monday to catch his flight, he received an email from the Home Office saying his visa application was still being "processed" and that he must remain where he is.

This is despite the fact that Fiona completed the sponsorship forms for Kamil, along with his partner and their cat, days ago.

"Isn't it disgusting, you get out of a war-torn city, you are in a refugee camp, people here are pulling together to make safe space, and the only problem holding you back is some poxy administration issue," said Fiona.

"They haven't made it clear when Kamil and Natalia can come, everything is very vague. There isn't even acknowledgement of what has happened to them."

Kamil, a 30-year-old computer programmer from Kharkiv, is currently at a refugee camp in Warsaw, yet cannot stay here as there is not enough space.

His partner and their cat are travelling across Poland with the family's "worldly belongings" to join him.

Fiona and her friend had planned to welcome Kamil at London Liverpool Street train station yesterday and bring him to his new home, but had to cancel

this plan.

"It is such a shame", says Fiona, "We were ready for him to land at Stansted, and now Kamil has lost all this money on flights.

"We are devastated."

Fiona was also scathing of how the government's refugee sponsorship scheme was being administered.

"This registration process is horrific," said Fiona. "Kamil was sent a completely de-personalised letter saying he is being processed according to his priority.

"It doesn't make sense for there to be such categories in this situation, you would think that everyone should be a

Kamil's home town Kharkiv, near the Russian border in the northeast of Ukraine, lies in tatters and remains under heavy Russian bombardment.

Many people have been killed, including one 96-year-old prisoner of the Nazi concentration camps.

Kamil and his partner decided to flee Ukraine when they became "scared for their lives," and finally made it out of the country last Friday, March 18.

Fiona was introduced to Kamil that same week, after he responded to her Facebook post offering shelter in the spare bedroom of her council house.

"Once you start getting into a conversation and learning about their journey, you can’t help but get emotionally invested," said Fiona.

"We all do, but when names and faces are attached to things, it becomes something else entirely.

"I am so worried for them."

Fiona was moved to invite Ukrainian refugees into her home after watching their plight on the news.

"Imagine, just now, we have to all of a sudden run and get all of our children, grandchildren and pets, jump into a car, avoiding bombs and dodging missiles,

to go somewhere you have no idea what it is like."

Fiona's own mother came to London in 1942 aged just sixteen, having fled a "brutal" workhouse in Ireland.

Although she has only chatted to Kamil over Whatapp, as he is struggling to get reception while constantly on the move, Fiona said she was looking forward to meeting him and Natalia.

"He has a nice sense of humour, despite what they are going through," she said. "I hear the warmth in his messages."

Despite the current problems getting Kamil here, Fiona was reassured by the response of her local community, who have "shown incredible generosity."

She has been inundated by "amazing people" offering to help, whether it be decorating Kamil and Natalia's new room, giving money, donating their furniture or even offering to socialise with the pair when they arrive.

"This is not me on my own, it's also my friends and everyone else," said Fiona.

"We are all doing this."

"We will make something happen and it will be ok," she added.

Push continues to save bermondsey carnival

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark's opposition politicians will push to save the Bermondsey Carnival, the free event organised by local people since the 1990s, after its funding was unceremonially cut by the council this year.

Organisers of the carnival, which traces its roots as far back as 1900, were told there was no money for the summer event in Southwark Park this year. Last year the carnival was given £35,000 by Southwark Council for a small edition, and has had about £80,000 for full-sized celebrations in the past.

Russell Dryden, one of the organisers, told the News he was encouraged by the council to apply for a grant of up to £10,000 to hold the carnival this year.

Southwark's Liberal Democrats, who are in opposition to Labour, who control the council, were due to force a vote at last night (Wednesday March 23) at the council assembly as the News went to press on whether or not to give a grant for full-sized celebrations this year.

It comes as the council contemplates giving permission for a private company to shut off part of the park for up to two weeks for a Korean pop (K-pop) festival in late July and early August. Organisers appear likely to get permission, given that the festival was given the green light in 2021, before being forced to postpone by a year because of Covid-19 concerns.

The two events could be linked money given by the organisers of the K-pop festival, which understandably has proven controversial among local residents, could be used to fund free local events like the Bermondsey Carnival, although there has been no explicit confirmation of this from the council.

Commenting, Cllr Hamish McCallum, Southwark Liberal Democrat group leader and North Bermondsey councillor said: “This is a classic example of Labour not listening to residents when it comes to decision-making. In one swoop, Labour’s policies suggest a potential future of profiting off Southwark Park with events like the K-pop festival, while residents lose out on important community gatherings like Bermondsey

"What is shocking is that they have made this decision after a pandemic that has severely restricted us from seeing each other at diverse, inclusive events like the Bermondsey Carnival.”

The Southwark Park Association 1869, which helps run and promote the park,

has launched a separate petition to get funding for the festival.

In a letter to Labour council leader Kieron Williams, members said: “Without a dedicated budget from the Council the future of the Carnival is in doubt.

Reinstatement of £35,000 would cost about 54p a head of the local population,

attacked Ian with a very large knife, fatally wounding him."

CCTV images (main picture) shared on the programme show two men having a discussion outside of the restaurant, one wearing a high visibility jacket, the other clad in dark clothing.

Both wore crash helmets to obscure their faces.

"After a short interaction outside of the restaurant, they ran in, one of them was seen brandishing a knife from his waistband," said chief inspector Wood.

"It was all over in a matter of seconds."

Wood said the suspects are young men or teenagers of slight build who can "move very quickly".

"Our appeal today is to anyone who might recognise their build or movements, and the basic descriptions that we have got."

"We need to identify them," he added.

The suspects fled on a stolen moped through Burgess Park after stabbing Ian, which was later found burnt out in Picton Street on the Elmington Estate,

around 1.5 miles away from the scene of the crime.

Wood said police needed as much information about the wrecked moped as well as the drivers.

"We ask anybody to come forward," he says, "anybody who saw anything at that time or on that date."

There should be "a lot of potential witnesses," said Wood, as the attack took place in "a busy part of London, where there is a high density of restaurants, just before Christmas.

"Ian's family are heartbroken, as you can image," he said. "This is a close-knit Latin community near the Elephant and Castle.

"People who knew Ian are still feeling the effects of his death."

Wood continued: "Just pick up the phone. We can deal with anything anonymously, you call this programme, call crime stoppers.

"We just need a name and we'll do the rest."

“The income generated from commercial events, such as the K-Pop festival, play an essential role in enabling the continued support of community events through our new Cultural Celebrations Fund. We invite community organisations to apply for grants from this fund to run free, local events across the borough. Bermondsey Carnival is among this year’s applicants and we will be announcing successful bids later this month.”

‘Senseless’ murder of 23-year-old man in front of his mum

Ian Gualavisi (pictured) was stabbed to death on 14 December 2021 just after 7:30 p.m. at his family's Ecuadorian restaurant in Elephant & Castle.

He was brutally attacked in front of diners in the Rincon Restaurant and his mother, who watched helplessly as her son died.

Speaking on the show, detective chief inspector Chris Wood called Ian "a young man just embarking on a new phase in his life as a restaurant manager."

On the evening of 14 December, he said "two men arrived on a stolen moped, barged into the restaurant and

Comment ‘Government must step up to meet the scale of the challenge in the Ukraine’

he war in Ukraine has shocked residents across my constituency, with hundreds of people getting in touch to express their concerns about Vladimir Putin’s violent, unprovoked, unjustified invasion.

It was extremely moving to listen to President Zelenskyy address the House of Commons recently. His leadership, courage and resolve are extraordinary and humbling in the face of such aggression.

The war in Ukraine has already led to millions of civilians being displaced. We have seen shocking scenes of barbaric cruelty and devastation by Putin’s forces and people across Ukraine are fleeing to safety.

The UK Government was far too slow to respond to the humanitarian

MP for Dulwich & West Norwood crisis in Ukraine, initially issuing just a tiny number of visas while other European countries were welcoming hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians.

In addition, visas were only open to Ukrainians seeking to be reunited with family members in the UK, with no scheme for those who did not already have family members here.

The Government has bowed to the enormous pressure from the public that we must do more to help Ukrainians fleeing the war, and last week announced a community sponsorship scheme. But the details of how to apply, the requirements and the paperwork needed have changed every few days, and it still isn’t clear how people who need accommodation in the UK are supposed to be matched with families who are willing to host.

Community sponsorship is a valued

and important route to sanctuary in the UK and I am proud that our local area has welcomed several families through community sponsorship in recent years. The programme the government has announced lacks the support offered through community sponsorship, and it is being left to communities and our local councils to organise the help and support traumatised Ukrainians will need. While I’m sure our communities will provide a brilliant welcome, this isn’t good enough.

I am continuing to call for the government to ensure a simple route for people fleeing the horror of war in Ukraine to come to the UK and all the support they need to come to terms with their trauma.

The government must step up to meet the scale of the challenge.

My children grew up knowing him, and he gave them a education and a totally different outlook about disabled people (especially people affected by Cerebral Palsy) that only he could do.

He has never moaned about his disability or ever wanted any sympathy.

In fact he has always done quite the opposite.

He has always tried his hardest to live as normal a life as possible being a fun loving person, a great pool player, and an extremely intelligent person that went to adult classes and achieved a A Level pass in Maths.

He deserves better that to be treated like this.

ebruary brought a dizzying mix of weather – one hundred mile an hour winds (in some places) rain, mild conditions and then a cold snap. Traditionally March can be a dry month with low rainfall but can also bring cold north easterly winds. British Summer Time begins on Sunday 27th March - and the welcome lighter evenings arrive - then it will seem more like spring.

Although the trees are still dormant buds are more visible and new leaves will soon appear; there are other signs the garden is coming back into life.

Birds are busy starting to build nests, their songs are more tuneful. Food is still scarce and so continue to provide a regular supply of seeds/fat balls.

It is time to revitalise window boxes and containers; top up with new compost and tidy the plants you want to keep. Seasonal additions such as woodland primrose and viola make a simple and pretty mix along with dwarf narcissus.

By March tree blossom is becoming widespread with Blackthorn and Cherry plum (Prunus cerasifera); and as long as there are no frosts or cold winds, it should last into April. Magnolia is one of the loveliest spring flowering trees – there are many varieties but two of the most popular are M. soulangiana with its large upright pink blooms appearing before the leaves; the other is Magnolia stellata, a medium sized shrub/tree and ideal for a small garden. It has creamy, silky star shape

flowers that are fragrant. It can be grown in a container for a few years and live happily on the balcony, patio or roof garden, it does best in rich soil. The best time to plant Magnolia stellata is during April; prices start at £10.99 for a small specimen in a 3L pot or for a more grown up one – a three foot plant in a 5L pot (costing around £29.99).

Work is now picking up in the garden – feed roses, trees, shrubs and hedging plants with a slow- release fertiliser; these are widely available at Garden Centres. Lightly fork the fertiliser into the soil around the plants. Deadhead hydrangeas before they come back into growth and cut to one third of last year’s growth. Prune winter Jasmine now it has finished flowering. March marks the start of the grass cutting year - the lawn edges will need tidying.

And for the arm chair gardener who does not yet want to venture outside - start a growing diary to plan and log your seed sowing.

Order bedding plants and buy vegetable plug plants to save time.

Maybe if TFL didn't push all the traffic on to the main roads causing congestion instead of opening the roads to let the traffic flow freely then you will have pollution in these areas.

Southwark Council votes down plan to add more street cleaners My elderly mother still lives in SE1. I travel over as much as possible from a different country to visit her. From one visit to the next, there is no street sweeping. I have to do it everytime I visit. People don't take pride in their outside spaces anymore. Younger local residents could do more, but the council seems to have washed their hands on certain areas.

In a perfect world with unlimited cash I’d agree with local art, but I would much prefer to see a second lift to each platform so that when the 1st breaks down disabled travelers can get home after work without lengthy detours. Let’s get Ukrainians in need here and stop unnecessary government red tape immediately

W

e are currently facing the worst threat to western democracy since the Second World War, with millions in Ukraine suffering - and yet people’s attempts to help in this country are being blighted by red-tape.

Our story this week on a Ukrainian couple who have managed to flee the Russian bombing in their town, make their way to Poland and get a home here in Deptford should be an inspiring one.

The generosity of Fiona Taylor to have Kamil Salmanov, his partner Natalia Lepekha and their cat come to stay in her spare room on the Pepys Estate is just one example of the compassion and solidarity shown by ordinary people across the UK. In fact, according to Health Secretary Sajid Javid 150,000 have expressed an interested in hosting refugees through the Homes for Ukraine scheme. But Kamil and Natalia like so many others are stuck in Poland, despite having a flight booked because of paperwork.

This is in the same week as 50 orphans from the Ukraine bound for Scotland have been left waiting.

Have they all not gone through enough? 1Host families are rightly asking why we can’t just let them in and process them in the same way in which Ireland did.

Obviously there do need to be checks, but the UK is fast becoming known for its chaotic response to this humanitarian disaster. From the outset it was worrying that despite all Western intelligence pointing to the invasion of Ukraine, our government appeared to have no refugee scheme ready to launch right away.

After Britain initially only accepted visa applications from those with immediate relatives in the UK, the Government was forced to make several U-turns and last-minute announcements to allow more Ukrainians in – including promises to pay Britons £350 a month to host refugees.

Government concerns over Russian agents entering the country as Ukrainian refugees seem off the mark, when we see the bombing, the injured, the dead and the work being done in countries like Poland and Romania to step in and help immediately.

The Prime Minister was reported this week as being ‘desperate’ to visit Ukraine. Better surely that he was ‘desperate’ to make things easier for refugees to stay in this country during this barbaric war?

This is a chance for the UK to once more show itself as a country of love, compassion and safety for those fleeing tyranny. The British public have stepped up in their hundreds of thousands - it’s time our government did the same and not get caught up in paperwork and red tape. Hannah Azuonye was born and bred in Southwark - the place that William Shakespeare made his spiritual home, writes Michael Holland...

She was born in Camberwell, some childhood years were spent in Walworth, and she now resides in the north of the borough, just a walk away from Shakespeare’s Globe. ‘Despite living so close to London’s cultural epicentre,’ she says, ‘I don’t think it ever occurred to me that I’d have the opportunity to work in some of these iconic places.’ But that all changed when Hannah was spotted by an agent.

Hannah enjoyed drama in Primary school, her first taste of walking out onto a stage was aged five when she was Mary in the school Nativity play: ‘Mostly, I just remember being nervous about having to hold the hand of the boy playing Joseph!’ she recalls.

But as Hannah grew older it was music and languages that captured her interest. So much so that she did a modern languages degree at university, which was where her extracurricular activities in music and musical theatre rekindled her earlier passion for the stage. While studying she was always involved with drama societies and when she took part in a show during her graduation week she thought that would be her last theatrical performance How wrong she was: ‘It turned out to be the beginning of my professional career; I was approached by an agent watching the show, a family friend of one of my fellow actors, who recommended me to another agent, and it’s just been a case of following the opportunities that have arisen since then. It’s a great journey to be on.’

Hannah’s first professional show was Girl from the North Country’s original West End transfer at the Noel Coward theatre. She remembers, ‘I was

local actress lands dream role at globe extremely nervous for the very first show (which wasn’t helped by my best friend whisper-heckling as I walked onstage) but once the initial nerves had settled, I felt really at home on the stage.’

Her parents have always been supportive of their daughter, whose life took a dramatic and unexpected turn at an important stage of her life.

‘They have always been big supporters of the arts, and have always been totally supportive of my choices. It’s something I’m really grateful for, as so many artists are in a constant struggle to legitimise the work they do, to loved ones or otherwise. My dad, Chike Azuonye, is an artist himself, and my mum is a real art and theatre enthusiast, so there’s definitely a

creative streak in the family!’

And Hannah is confirming to all those people who saw something special in her stage work that they were right, as she prepares to play Lady Macbeth in a version of Macbeth that has been specifically created for young people as part of the Playing Shakespeare with Deutsche Bank project.

It was a role that she had to work hard

for over two rounds of auditions where she had to prepare two of the main monologues/duologues from the play.

It was while shopping in Sainsbury’s when she got the call telling her the part was hers: ‘It all felt a bit surreal,’ she admits.

Because of how Hannah came to find herself on a fast-track to the stars, she has never had any formal training. ‘I’ve been fortunate to land jobs working alongside some hugely talented, experienced and inspiring actors, and watching them work has been a masterclass,’ begins the young woman who seems to be taking everything confidently in her stride. ‘Just before the pandemic began, I’d been working with the Royal Shakespeare Company for 16 months, and going through the process of auditioning for this production of Macbeth at the Globe and working on my role as Lady Macbeth, I’ve really noticed how much I learnt and developed as an actor through that experience I had at the RSC. ‘Having the opportunity to play such a classic role in a place as remarkable as the Globe is incredibly special - I still have to pinch myself that I’m here.

And the experience of performing to a theatre full of 1000 teenagers each day, which is what the Playing Shakespeare programme’s focus is, has been unparalleled. It’s the most lively, energetic and unpredictable audience you can get, and it’s really thrilling.

We’re all equally excited to get the show open in front of the wider public!’

Hannah’s story is inspirational, and to paraphrase The Bard, ‘Something brilliant this way comes.’

Merchant shines in the Playhouse

This Winter 21/22 season at the Shakespeare’s Globe has seen productions of Measure for Measure and Hamlet adorn the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and joining them to close off the season is The Merchant of Venice, writes Christopher Peacock...

For modern audiences The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare’s more troubling plays with its anti-Semitic content.

Not afraid to take those issues head on, Abigail Graham directs for her Shakespeare’s Globe debut.

Graham has cut down the show’s length and moved scenes around. This pulls focus towards the anti-Semitism suffered by Shylock, the Jewish moneylender at the heart of the story, at the hands of the Christian Venetian merchants and rule-makers.

Adrian Schiller’s brilliant Shylock is played with the heart and emotion

of a man repeatedly discriminated against and avoids playing into any stereotypical tropes. One of the earliest representations of those stereotypes to appear on stage, or in English literature, being that of Shylock himself.

More praise has to go to those involved in the overall design of the show. A simple industrial styled set has the floor of the stage covered in silver coins as a nod to the play’s primary theme of moneylending. It also succeeds with the choice to opt for modern dress which is coherent with the modern takes in some of the scenes, the lottery for Portia’s hand in marriage played out in the style of a 1990s game show being a highlight.

Graham’s bold decisions to chop and restructure scenes certainly gives a sympathetic telling of the story and this is highlighted in the final scenes of her production. The play cuts the scenes that wrap up the romantic storylines and opts to end the play with the demise

of Shylock who has been stripped of his fortunes and forced to convert to Christianity. Played out in a cacophony of sounds, with Shylock’s daughter Jessica lamenting in Hebrew, makes it powerful and emotive. The themes of identity and Jessica’s own struggles in this production don’t get as much time to explore as the focus stays on her father.

With such abridging and altering of the script, Graham’s purpose to change the focus of the piece is achieved. She examines the darker side of what is meant to be a comedy without sacrificing the laughs. All that glistens may not be gold but this production certainly shines.

Back to the Future the Musical left this cynic with a huge grin on her face. The evening is a major event for dedicated fans, and the not so dedicated, writes Susan Hallissey.

The staging is second to none. From the moment one enters the auditorium the buzz and excitement is palpable. The stage and surrounding area an array of lights resembling a 1980s’ Pac Man game.

A looky-likey Marty McFly(Olly Dobson) starts the action with a suitably cheesy song and dance with the entourage in 80s’ clobber. How was this going to pan

out? Especially after the saccharine-sweet duet between Marty and his girlfriend Lorraine(Rosanna Hyland). However, the audience were in raptures applauding every song.

When Marty returned home to another amazing set piece, the lyrics seemed to lift my weary expectations. Hugh Cole playing the harangued George McFly elicited instant applause and sympathy.

But wait! The craziness that ensues when Doc and the DeLorean make their appearance is infectious. There was no turning back, I was grinning from

ear to ear. That car! Awesome! When Doc mentions the ‘Flux Capacitor’ the audience response was to cheer. Roger Bart as Doc Brown is captivating, cheeky and irreverent.

‘Put your mind to it’, sung by Cedric Neal, had me practically dancing in the aisle! I was done for!

Act Two, and it really is full throttle ahead. Marty needs to get back from 1955 or be doomed to a life in Spam Land, incessant cigarette smoking and buildings with asbestos, never mind messing up the future. This all depends

on lightning, a clock tower and the Flux Capacitor.

Chaos, noise, music and more dazzling effects follow. Doc’s scene where he climbs the stairs to the clock tower is hilarious. By now even I knew that the DeLorean needed to reach 88mph - And my anxiety showed it!

The finale was fabulous and to be fair I have never seen such an overwhelming reaction from an audience – especially for a car! The whole theatre was on its feet clapping and cheering!

anything that might help us solve the mystery, Nina was getting up close and personal with the magnifying glass looking for anything that could be a code or number to enable us to open the several locks and drawers that might lead to more clues. I studied all photos, maps and words, hoping I could see something to help us find the missing editor and make our escape.

The sense of euphoria whenever we found a key, opened a lock or solved a clue was amazing and ran through the whole team. The feeling of despair when nothing seemed to go right added to the tension as time ticked away.

We were given one hour to get in and get out and had realised early on that almost everything within the room could aid our investigation. Everything

long, long time! After the past few years perhaps people are craving nostalgia, and certainly joy and laughter, along with 300 million LED lights in the set and, of course, the DeLorean. I’m still no wiser to the use of the Flux Capacitor but who cares? What a spectacular evening – go see!

Escape from the editing room First of all we had to locate the premises where the dastardly crime had taken place, give a secret code to enter, and then get brought up to speed with events by Philip who then remotely steered us through the props and clues as we worked as a team to find and solve them, all the time battling against the clock whose seconds we could see ticking away, adding high-end anxiety to this realtime adventure.

But as the 60 minutes was coming to an end so the pressure in the room rose. Would we rescue the hostage and would we escape the room?

An hour after we left the Secret Studio, Team King was still buzzing from the excitement of completing the mission. All three of us agreed that it was a lot of fun and a great way to spend being locked in a room full of locks and shocks.

TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF ONE WAY SYSTEM

(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

1.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark and in consultation with the London Borough of Lewisham, hereby gives notice that to enable Thames Tideway relatedworks to take place, it made, an Order the effect of which, will be to suspend the existing one-way traffic flow system in Croft Street.

2.

Whilst the restriction is in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, the existing one-way traffic flow system in Croft Street, at it’s junction with Chilton Grove and Croft Street will be suspended, to allow for a temporary two-way traffic flow system to be implemented.

3.

Thames Tideway Construction vehicles(only) will be permitted access and egress into Croft Street from it’s junction with Chilton Grove

4.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said work and for works vehicles, any vehicle being used in connection with police, fire or ambulance purposes and anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

5.

The restriction will come into operation on the 1st April 2022 – 30th September 2023 Monday – Friday 08:00hrs – 18:00hrs and Saturday 08:00hrs – 13:00hrs as required and will be managed by traffic marshals.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice, that, because of works by Guildmore Ltd, it intends, to make an order, the effect of which would be to introduce ‘at any time’ waiting and loading restrictions and prohibit vehicles in part of the above named road Whilst the restriction is in place, and whilst the authorised traffic signs/road markings are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to wait, including waiting for the purpose of loading and unloading at any time in: (a) Boat Lifter Way, which lies between Sweden Gate and it’s blocked end. By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IBRA SEKAJJA scored in the fourth minute of added-time as Dulwich Hamlet ended their three-game losing run with a 1-1 draw against Slough Town at Champion Hill last weekend.

Boss Gavin Rose made five changes to the side that started in the 2-0 defeat against table-toppers Maidstone United the previous Tuesday. Jack Holland and Andre Blackman came into the back four and Quade Taylor started as a defensive midfielder with Sekajja and Darren McQueen up front.

Taofiq Olomowewe, Tyrone Sterling, Danny Mills and Jordan Green dropped to the bench and Luca Levee wasn’t in the squad.

Slough played with a strong wind behind them in the first half and just a minute in Dulwich goalkeeper Charlie

Grainger had to scramble to prevent a cross from Josh Jackman finding the top corner.

Edon Pruti headed wide from Kurtis Cumberbatch’s free-kick before Dulwich had a chance as Rebels stopper Jonathan North kept out McQueen’s stinging effort.

Gio McGregor shot just wide from the edge of the box and then Aaron Kuhl tried to use the wind as he attempted a lob from halfway, but Grainger had the goal covered and the attempt was off-target.

Reise Allassani had the last opportunity of the first half when he shot wide after a good run down the left.

North denied Blackman early in the second half before McGregor found Sekajja who was flagged just offside when he would have been through on the visiting goalkeeper.

The hosts went even closer to taking the lead an hour in only for Allassani’s shot to hit the far post after he had cut in from the left. From the corner after that attack,

Jordan Higgs forced North to stretch to tip a dipping effort over the crossbar.

Slough went ahead against the run of play in the 69th minute after they had defended a number of corners before launching a counter-attack. George Hunt found half-time substitute Ben Harris who fired the cross past Grainger at the far post.

Holland tried to bring his side level with a shot that deflected away for a corner with three minutes left.

In injury-time, Green was fouled on the right and when Higgs’ delivery was cleared to Green, he fired in a shot that just missed the top corner.

Dulwich kept coming and got a deserved reward in the 94th minute when Grainger sent a long free-kick forward, substitute Mills’ header found Allassani who slipped the ball through for Sekajja who got their just before North to finish to the delight of the majority of the 2,705 crowd.

There was still one more moment of

drama. Dulwich’s Ronnie Vint caught the ball as he thought he would be awarded a free-kick for a shove. Instead, he was booked for his reaction at not getting the decision as he threw the ball away. And in reacting to that yellow with dissent, another followed and the home side were reduced to ten men. The defender will serve a one-game ban.

Dulwich are back in the last play-off spot in seventh, seven points behind Eastbourne Borough and ahead of St Albans City on goal difference.

Rose’s side travel to Concord Rangers this Saturday for a 3pm kick-off.

Bittersweet as Lionesses net Salt win

By Jeff Burnige at St Paul’s sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIONESSES returned to winning ways with a competitive single-goal victory over Saltdean United in their London & South East Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division clash at St Paul’s last Sunday.

Manager Jack Wheeler rotated his squad with five changes from the derby defeat to Dulwich Hamlet, and was expecting a difficult match against a recently strengthened Saltdean, who were fresh from their 5-0 thrashing of

Aylesford.

The opening half confirmed that feeling, and the more mature Saltdean enjoyed the better possession and movement through midfield. Some sides tend to find it awkward to play against a much younger team, and the young Lionesses found some of the decisions against them a little disappointing.

They were competing hard, but there were few chances at either end. There was a blow for the hosts when Emma Squirrel was helped off with a serious knee injury. She was replaced with Milly Penfold on the left side of midfield.

After the break, Saltdean were not

allowed to stay on top, as the Lionesses’ fitness and sheer desire showed. The home goalkeeper, sixteen-year-old old Serena Head, and the back three of Millie Connell, Amy Nash and Poppy Payne were solid, as was Sophie Chapman, who moved into midfield for this game.

The Lionesses were in the ascendancy when they suffered another blow. They were reduced to ten after an accidental collision between two players who were both focusing only on contesting a bouncing ball. They were both winded, but the referee decided to punish Lioness Kaydence Kabadaki with a red card.

If anything, this energised the young

Lionesses, and they went in front on 68 minutes with a twelve-yard strike from Chapman.

Wheeler made substitutions after the goal, with club captain Libby Stubbs reinforcing the defence, and a fourth sixteen-year-old on the day, Shireen Alimi, causing more problems up front.

In the end, it was an excellent three points for the Lionesses. They are fifth in the table with 29 points from eighteen games.

The Lionesses’ focus turns to L&SERWFL League Cup action next, as they travel to play Dartford in the semifinals on April 3. Kick-off is 2pm.

Surrey Women have new skipper

Jones is taking a break to concentrate on her career as a personal trainer.

She led the side to victory in the London Cup and the inaugural 50-over London Championship in 2020.

Jones said: I look back at my years as vice-captain under Cecily Scutt and more recent years captaining the team with very fond memories. It has been an honour to lead the team and something I will miss.

“However, I am sure Aylish with her knowledge and experience will push the team forward to every success with the support of the incredible coaching staff at Surrey.

“My focus is now into my personal training studio with every ambition to open my own bigger facility in the very near future.”

Southwark duo set for Wembley

RICHARD RIAKPORHE puts his unbeaten record on the line when he steps into the ring against London rival Deion Jumah for their cruiserweight showdown at Wembey Arena this Saturday night.

Walworth’s Riakporhe, 32, has won thirteen bouts, nine by knock-out.

Hammersmith’s Jumah, also 32, has a 14-0 record with seven KOs. Riakporhe scored a fifth-round knockout against Olanrewaju Durodola in November for the WBC silver belt. He is the mandatory challenger to the WBC cruiserweight championship held by Ilunga Makabu.

Bermondsey’s Chris Kongo, 29, is also in action at Wembley for the first fight of his BOXXER/Sky Sports deal.

Kongo is aiming to get into world title contention.

Fish dominate but can’t find goal

Josh Strouts’ early strike was all the visitors needed as the Fish struggled to create anything of note in front of an attendance of 163 at St Paul’s.

With the first real attack of the game, Rob Lawrence split Fisher’s defence to find Strouts who went past goalkeeper Tommy Taylor to finish into an empty net.

Millwall’s assault on the top six may have stalled last Saturday afternoon, but it’s not the end of the story.

England’s second tier is one of, if not the most exciting league in the world.

You only have to look at Luton Town in third place to see what it throws up.

The Lions are certainly well-placed in the play-off battle.

Gary Rowett’s side have been in promotion-winning form since losing 3-0 to Fulham at the start of February.

After that game, the Lions boss laid down the gauntlet to his team of, either accepting a mediocre mid-table finish, or giving themselves something to fight for.

The answer from the squad has been rather empathic in the choice of option B. Last Saturday’s defeat to Stoke will have been seen as a disappointing end to a fantastic run. But, as Rowett said, you would have taken six wins and two draws over nine games, in whichever sequence.

The international break will give Millwall the chance to get more players back from injury and the players who

had just returned will have vital time to work on their fitness.

The lack of options available played a part in this reverse. Rowett only made one change to his side, which was enforced with Benik Afobe unable to play against his parent club. Tyler Burey started in his place.

Meanwhile, Michael O’Neill had the luxury of making five changes to his starting XI. Tiredness finally caught up with a side that badly needed this international break. This was evident during a flat performance at the bet365 Stadium.

Jacob Brown has had a solid season for Stoke, hitting double figures and scoring crucial goals. He got the one that ended Millwall’s run of almost eight hours without conceding.

Millwall would have been very disappointed with the way that happened. Lewis Baker whipped in a corner, and Brown managed to outjump Billy Mitchell and George Saville to head into the top corner and give the hosts the lead. There had been a warning from the previous delivery with Danny McNamara forced to clear off the line after Brown had won another battle in the air.

Brown was consistently causing problems. Jake Cooper was lucky not to concede a penalty after he appeared to drag down the goal-scorer. The Lions

skipper was thankful for the leniency of referee John Brooks.

Saville was making his 100th appearance for the club in this game, but he will not remember it fondly.

In the 70th minute, he headed past Bartosz Bialkowski from another Baker delivery, that goal sealing a welcome victory for the hosts who hadn’t won in their eight previous attempts.

The Lions were presented with a golden ticket back into the game six minutes later. Veteran Phil Jagielka fouled the returning Tom Bradshaw in the box. Jed Wallace has been Millwall’s Mr Reliable, but this time his spot-kick was saved by Jack Bonham down low to his right. The Lions’ afternoon was summed up when the ball bobbled along the goal-line from Bonham’s save, but no visiting player could get close enough to tap into an empty net.

There were some positives. Rowett was able to call upon three players who had been out with injury as Bradshaw, Maikel Kieftenbeld and Sheyi Ojo came on in the second half.

The more unfortunate news was that Mason Bennett appeared to pick up a calf injury. Bennett has been crucial in Millwall’s play-off charge, and losing him would be a real blow as he was in one of his best runs of form since joining the club.

The whole performance looked

tired and laboured. The hosts were consistently the better side, first to every second ball, a quality that the Lions pride themselves on.

Perhaps this was a blessing in disguise. Millwall won their last game before the first international break of the season and were on a seven-match unbeaten run before facing Luton at home. Supporters probably turned up expecting a routine home win against a side below them in the league. Instead, the Hatters deservedly took the points with a 2-0 victory.

The Lions will go into their remaining games with no fear. They will also go into those games not worrying about having to protect a long unbeaten run.

That run has ended and the chance to start a new one presents itself.

Luton are the ones to be shot at now, something which seems to get the best out of Millwall.

Neil Harris, speaking on Sky Sports, said his former side would need 72 points to clinch a play-off place. That’s fifteen more. Four of their remaining eight games are at The Den, against teams sixteenth and below. They should be targeting four wins. If Harris is right, they would need three more points from the other four games.

Gaining revenge on Luton would be the perfect start to what could be an exciting finale.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT acknowledged some of his players couldn’t raise their game again against Stoke City after pushing their physical efforts to the limit in their eightmatch unbeaten run.

But the Millwall manager also explained why he is not concerned that sequence was ended before the international break.

Rowett picked out Scott Malone, Jed Wallace and George Saville as players who had posted big running numbers in the 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town in their previous game.

That was a monumental effort that ended the Terriers’ seventeen-game unbeaten run in the Championship.

Ironically – or perhaps because of fatigue – Wallace missed a penalty and Saville scored an own goal in the 2-0 defeat to Stoke last weekend.

Some of Millwall’s players were given until Thursday this week off, with others reporting to Calmont Road depending on their level of involvement recently and as they work on their fitness after returns from injury.

Rowett took a rare chance to head back to his home in Derbyshire for a short break.

Millwall go into the last eight games just four points off sixth. Rowett revealed he had a points target in mind before the last international break of the season. The Lions were eleven points off the play-off places after three consecutive league defeats in January.

Rowett welcomed the chance for a breather before the final push, hopefully for the top six.

“Everyone has needed it. We all knew it was coming and everyone was working hard towards it. It’s quite nice to have the break,” Rowett said.

“We’ll still be working. The staff will go to games at the weekend and we’ll be in for a couple of days training Thursday and Friday. Some of the lads who haven’t done as much will have a little bit of remote work to do.

“It looked at that point as though it was going to be a really desperate attempt just to get some results.

“We just needed to pick points up and if I’m being honest the players have certainly exceeded what I thought we would get in that time.

“And that’s why after Stoke, it would have been so easy for me to come in and say that we’ve performed poorly, we’ve not played well. But there were

so many reasons why. It was at the end of a run of games, it was probably after our most energetic performance of the season.

“If you’d seen some of the numbers after Wednesday [against Huddersfield] – Scotty Malone, Jed, Sav, people like that – they were the ones really, well, most of the players, but there were four or five who just couldn’t physically go again.

“And I had to accept that. I don’t like to accept it but I had to accept it. I think the players have certainly earned

the break after one game when they couldn’t quite do it.”

Millwall have something of a reset ahead of their next match at Luton Town on April 2. Over their last nine games, as well as going unbeaten in eight they won five in a row and kept five consecutive clean sheets.

Rowett added: “Most of what you guys [in the media] have to ask, we’re always going to be asked regardless of what happens. So if we’re on an unbeaten run it’s how long can that unbeaten run go. If we’re on a losing

run it’s how do we stop the losing run.

If it’s a winning run it’s how do we maintain it.

“I don’t get too bogged down by what the run of games is. Literally, you just take each game as it comes. We can beat the likes of Huddersfield but then we lose to Stoke.

“It doesn’t matter where you play or what run you’re on. What matters is trying to do everything you can in that one game to win it and then moving on very quickly to the next game.

“That’s exactly how we work.”

Manager joins tributes to journalist and Lions fan

Football was in shock after the news last Wednesday (March 16) that Lions fan ‘Jiggo’ had passed away from a heart attack at the age of 50.

Paul wrote for The Sun for more than three decades and as well as being a regular at The Den in a work capacity and as a supporter, he covered Tottenham Hotspur among others on the London football beat.

Paul is survived by his wife, Kelly, and daughter, Millie.

Millwall said they were “deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of a dear friend and colleague, Paul Jiggins, aged 50.”

Paul was a co-host on the club’s podcast Wall Talk.

Millwall added: “In a long-lasting tribute, The Den’s press lounge will be renamed the Paul Jiggins Media Suite.”

Millwall’s players wore black armbands in their game against Stoke City last weekend. As well as that tribute in their next home match against Swansea City, there will also be a minute’s applause before kick-off.

“Really sad news when I heard it,” Rowett said. “Jiggo was obviously a Millwall fan, he did the podcast with the lads.

“I met him on a number of occasions.

He always backed the club, he was always very proud Millwall.

“Really sad news, at that age. I’m really sad for his family and his friends.

“The club have got behind it and shown the respect, as we always would.”

Former Millwall manager Neil Harris also paid his respects. He told The Sun: “My deepest sympathies go to Jiggo’s family, his wife and daughter.

“First and foremost, Paul was a

class act. A wonderful fella. Extremely professional with his role but he always found a light-hearted way to make me feel relaxed, win, lose or draw, whether it was in a press conference or a one-onone interview.

“After some difficult games, Jiggo was the voice of reason. I cannot praise him highly enough in a working relationship but also as a human being.

“For me, the world of football will never be the same.”

Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino said: “I am so sorry to hear the news about Paul. He was probably one of the most regular journalists we would see at our press conferences at Spurs and many times you could expect a question to make you laugh.

“He was there from the start of our Spurs journey in Seattle on pre-season, the first British journalist to hear me try to speak English.

“His family, friends and colleagues are all in my thoughts.”

Assistant sets record straight Benik Afobe

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BENIK AFOBE admitted a blast from Millwall assistant manager Adam Barrett reminded the Lions they needed to improve their setpiece record.

Millwall didn’t score their first goal from a set-play in the league until their fifth game of the season, the 2-1 win against Blackpool at The Den when Jed Wallace fired home a direct free-kick.

The Lions’ first goal from a deadball delivery and a first-contact finish was in their eleventh game, when Murray Wallace headed home Wallace’s corner for the winner in the 89th minute of the 1-0 victory at Barnsley.

Millwall have improved that area of their game recently. During their eight-match unbeaten run, five of their ten goals came from set-pieces. Afobe’s second in the 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town was from a Scott Malone delivery before the ball broke to him on the edge of the box and the striker lashed home.

Four of those goals were in games Millwall won by one goal, highlighting how important setpieces are to a side that have scored more than only four teams in the league this season.

Barrett leads the Lions’ work on set-plays.

“There’s no secret with Millwall, we base some of our game, some of our chances on set-pieces, we’ve got great players who come up from the back, great set-piece takers,” Afobe said.

“There’s a crazy stat that most goals are scored from set-pieces.

As great as Man City and Liverpool are, they score a lot of goals from set-pieces.

“For us to keep scoring goals from set-pieces we’re going to take that and we’re going to keep working on it on the training ground.

“Thankfully for us it’s coming off on match-days now because at the beginning of the season Adam Barrett was getting on to us for not being very good at set-pieces!

“Better late than never.”

Jed Wallace is trying to help Millwall into the play-offs

JED WALLACE won’t mind too much if he has to cancel his prewedding party at the end of May – because it will mean Millwall have reached the play-off final.

Wallace - who turns 28 on Saturday - is getting married in June and the celebrations will kick off the previous month with a do in Surrey.

The date for that is May 28 – the day before the Championship decider at Wembley for the final place in the 2022-23 Premier League.

Millwall are four points off the playoffs with eight games left this season.

Four of those fixtures are at The Den. Wallace was part of the side that won promotion to the Championship with their 1-0 win over Bradford at Wembley in 2017.

If he is to make another visit to the stadium in May then he and his partner will have plenty of rearranging to do.

“I’m getting married in Spain in June but before that we’ve got a party in England the day before the play-off final. So if we get to the play-off final it can’t happen,” Wallace told the News.

“We’re having a party in Surrey and then flying over to Spain. My missus grew up in Spain so it will be three or four days which will be nice after.

“It’s a risk worth taking, to be honest.

It’s a weird one, but if we have to miss it for the play-off final I’ll take that all day long. So would my missus, it’s a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity.

“If there is a time to miss a wedding party it’s definitely for a play-off final for the Premier League. It’s something I wouldn’t mind doing.”

Those bookings probably looked safe enough in January, when Millwall were eleven points off sixth after three successive league defeats.

The Lions were eight points off the play-offs after their 3-0 defeat to Fulham the following month and they were struggling to find form with just one win in six games.

They also had a number of players out through injury, particularly in attack, including Wallace, and were off the back of a disruption when several players were unavailable over the winter following positive Covid-19 tests.

But six wins and two draws in their last nine games have brought them right back into the mix.

“Probably towards the end of January you would have said we had no chance,” Wallace said. “But then typical of the core group of players at Millwall and also of the club as a whole, backs against the wall we had nowhere else to go, really, only to come out swinging.

“That’s in the DNA of the club. We put together a great run and have given ourselves a small opportunity. We just have to see what happens.

“There are teams above us that have vastly superior squads to ours and double our attendances. Much bigger clubs.

“But Millwall has always thrived when it’s the underdog. That’s the mentality of the club. That’s the way it’s been since I’ve been here and that’s what it’s like at the moment.

“So who knows what could happen.”

players were never going to press the panic button.

“The gaffer is pretty consistent with how he is day-to-day,” Wallace said.

“He’s experienced in the Championship, he knows what he’s doing. He also knew we had players coming back from injury.

“To be fair, we actually weren’t playing that badly. That’s probably the

worst thing about it, when you think you’re doing all right but you’re losing.

That’s not good.

“A couple of games recently we’ve not played well and won. Ultimately that’s what it’s all about.

“The gaffer ain’t going to panic and we’ve got a group of experienced players. You look right down our squad, we’ve got senior pros everywhere

that have played a lot of games in the Championship and a lot for Millwall.

Myself, Bart [Bialkowski], Hutchy [Shaun Hutchinson], Coops [Jake Cooper], Muzza [Murray Wallace], we’ve all played well over a hundredodd games for Millwall.

“We know what it is to be a good Millwall player and a good Millwall team. At the moment we do look decent.

It’s just those fine lines. With a team like us, a goal either way from a corner can mean zero points or three points.

Unfortunately we just finished on the wrong side of that at the weekend.”

Millwall have been here before. They went into the last international break of the season in 2017-18 also four points off sixth place.

Wallace knows that on paper the fixture list this time doesn’t look as difficult.

But he has a note of caution.

“Under Neil we were in the play-off [race] going into this break but we knew we had a really tough run-in,” Wallace said. “Whereas this year our run-in does look favourable.

“But, I think any real Millwall fan would tell you, we’ve got just as much of a chance of losing to Barnsley and Peterborough at home as we have of losing to Bournemouth or Fulham.

“You only have to look at Barnsley’s recent results. They drew against Fulham, they were the better team against Sheffield United first half.

“These teams have a lot to play for, as do we, so we go into it knowing what to expect. If we can play as well as we did against Huddersfield we’ll be fine.

“Hutchy said it a few months ago, he hit the nail on the head, apart from

Fulham every single game is a 50/50 game.

“Huddersfield, seventeen unbeaten and they come down to The Den and we beat them. We go to Stoke who hadn’t won in eight and lose. That just sums up this league, really.

“We’re looking forward to it. It’s a good position to be in, we’ve got nothing to lose. There are plenty of big clubs above us but we’ll try and sneak in and see what happens.

“If not but we finish in that top ten then I think we’ve had another great season.”

Millwall’s players are being asked more about their top-six chances but are understandably cautious not to hype it.

Daniel Ballard, though, told the News recently that it’s an opportunity to grasp as they don’t know when they will be in this position again. Ballard was in the Blackpool side that defeated Lincoln City 2-1 in last year’s League

One play-off final.

“It’s a group of players that always respond well to when we just go out to play football, give it 100 per cent and not put too much pressure on ourselves,” Wallace said.

“Dan Ballard, great young player, had a promotion campaign last year with Blackpool and he’ll be hungry to do the same again. It’s completely fair enough.

“The senior players in the dressing room are just trying to keep everyone calm. One thing you know with us, we’re never going to fall short on effort. People like Muzza, [Maikel] Kieftenbeld, Benno [Mason Bennett], Bradders [Tom Bradshaw], they give their all every day.

“So we’re not going to fall short on effort. Whether we fall short on a set-play here or there or a little bit of quality here or there, that’s probably what’s going to cost us.

“But we won’t fall short on trying and we’ll see where we end up.”

Wallace insisted at the start of the season that Smith – who had previously roomed alone on away trips – would replace another good pal, Shaun Williams, after the latter left for Portsmouth.

Smith is one of the more intellectual footballers and is currently studying for a Master of Business Administration.

Smith has scored three times in eleven games for Salford, who are nine points off the play-off places in league two but have two games in hand.

“I miss Smudge, yeah, he’s a good guy on and off the pitch,” Wallace said. “I’m on my own now so more miserable.

“You can imagine the intelligent conversations with Matt Smith, you’re not going to find that with any other members of the squad, definitely not! So I think it’s best to go on my own.

“I’m not sure the likes of Danny Mac and Coops are going to give me quite the same articulate convo that Smudge will give me.

“We could be talking one minute about football and the next minute he’s telling me about the Metaverse and how this is going to happen and that’s going to happen.

“He’s not your stereotypical footballer, to say the least, so he’s missed in and around the dressing room.

“He’s back home now, playing every week, had a baby. I think he’s at that point in his life and his career where the thought of being four hours away from his wife and little boy is not something he wanted to do.

“So to get back home and play regularly has worked out well for him.

“They’re pretty similar to us, they need to put a good run together to get into the play-offs.

So hopefully – though it will not be good for my wedding – it will be good for football if me and Smudge can get to the play-offs.”

It’s another blow for Millwall after Bennett had been in some of his best form this season. The forward scored in wins over Cardiff and QPR during the Lions’ recent eight-game unbeaten run.

Boss Gary Rowett had only just welcomed back Tom Bradshaw, Maikel Kieftenbeld and Sheyi Ojo from injury.

“Mason probably looks like he’s going to be, unfortunately, out for the best part of the season. That’s a big blow,” Rowett told the News.

“Again, as soon as you see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel someone knocks a load of stones down at the end and blocks the entrance. You’re crawling through and see a little chink and someone puts another stone in the way.

“But maybe that’s been the challenge this season, to kick on regardless of what happens and see where we can get to.

“We’ll keep going.”

Pointless Why Gary Rowett is not setting target

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett has explained why he has not set a points target that he thinks could get the Lions into the play-offs this season.

Millwall are four points off sixth with eight games left.

The average points needed to finish sixth over the past ten seasons in the Championship is 74.3. The lowest points accumulated by a side finishing sixth in that time was 68, the highest 80.

Based on the average, the Lions would

need to collect seventeen points over their last eight games of the season. That would take a similar effort to their recent eight-match unbeaten run, then they picked up 20 points.

Millwall finished on 72 points in 20718, three points off sixth, and on 68 points in Rowett’s first season in 201920, two off the play-offs.

Rowett hasn’t marked down a target this campaign.

“No, I haven’t. I’ve not really thought about a points tally. It’s not something I’ve really discussed internally,” Rowett said.

“We know what sort of points total gets you in the top six over the last ten years.

It’s 70-plus. There have been some 68s but more or less it’s 70-plus on average.

“And if I’m being honest I’m in the same mindset - I’m not bothered about or not thinking about how many points we need. I’m thinking, we’ve got eight games to go and can we put a really big effort in once again and see where that takes us?

“I think that’s what you have to do.

If you start putting points tallies on – I’ve always felt this – and you lose the first game coming back [after the international break], then straight away there’s a psychological negative in the players’ minds about it.

“For me that’s not what you want to do.”

Burey is sure to attract attention from clubs in the summer after some impressive displays in 2022, while Glasgow Rangers and Brighton have been credited with interest in Lovelace.

Rowett was asked if a new contract for Burey is one of the club’s priorities.

“I don’t really know,” Rowett said.

“Tyler is under contract, and contract situations are not something I tend to get involved with.

“I’ll let other people do their jobs there and make sure some of the younger players are tied down with the right contracts for the right lengths.

“He’s a player that’s done well so of course he’s a player that you want for a good while.

“But I’m not involved in that at the moment.”
