‘punished’ for fight to save the Elephant

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A displaced trader from the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre has said he is being "victimised" for his role in the campaign to stop the demolition of the beloved site.

Emad Megahed, who ran a successful IT shop at the old shopping centre for years, was the chair of the Elephant and Castle Traders’ Association, which played a key role in helping traders secure compensation and support during their relocation to the Elephant Arcade.

As a "punishment" for his efforts, Emad claims he was given a unit in the new development that was "one-third of the size" of his previous premises and "hidden out of sight".

"All the other traders came from smaller to better," he said. "I was the only business that deteriorated in size."

Other signs of his "victimisation", claimed Emad, were small acts of "indirect discrimination" and "favouritism" shown by the management towards businesses who had been more supportive of the development.

One example he cited was that they were allowed to place signs for their businesses on the pavement, while he could not.

"This is a pre-calculated strategy to take revenge for what I did," says Emad. "It is really childish."

In response to these allegations, a spokesperson at Elephant Arcade management company, Meanwhile Space said: "All prospective tenants were required to submit an application which was reviewed against published criteria."

"Spaces were allocated based on length of tenure at the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, the strength of the business plan ... and financial viability," they added.

At the Elephant Arcade, which was built to rehouse businesses from the shopping centre, Emad complained that trading conditions were "really bad", making it almost impossible to run a successful business.

Last week he was served an ultimatum saying he needed to pay his arrears or leave the unit with them written off. His eviction was supposed to happen on Monday, March 7.

Still, Emad claimed that everyone would struggle at the new site. He believed that footfall to the area had been irrecoverably

harmed by the demolition of the old shopping centre and that the Arcade's managers were not doing enough to support traders.

"There is no trade here," he said. "Even if they put someone else in my place, they couldn't make it work. The problem is the place, not the business."

A Meanwhile Space spokesperson contested this: "[We have] been committed to the success of our tenants and their businesses during these trying times by providing them with business support, connections to others in the community, and hands-on consultation and guidance."

hospitality generally," they added.

Emad, who taught himself Spanish to integrate with the Latin American community at the shopping centre, said the redevelopment had destroyed the big audience his business once had.

"It is like I am starting from scratch," he said. "People I once knew say they didn't even know I was here. But I am not allowed to put signs out."

Emad added that he missed the old shopping centre and the community of sellers and shoppers that existed there before its demolition.

"Things crumbled," says Emad. "We were dispersed this way, that way, in every direction. It destroyed the vibrancy."

His business, Macroom, which also recycles devices to help disadvantaged people in the area, is appealing for money to help relocate to another unit in the Arcade.

The 55-year-old Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre was closed in 2020 to make way for a £1 bn development, containing thousands of new homes and retail space.

It was fiercely opposed by local groups, who claimed the development would break up their tight-knit community and destroy an icon of working-class London.

new exhibition makes waves in Peckham My goal is to help black art be accessible to the community and help black talent be seen

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A new exhibition “celebrating black women” has gone down a storm in Peckham, after it was launched this week.

The “Black He(art)” exhibition, which opened at Peckham Levels, is the brainchild of 27-year-old Anisa Howell, a self-described “creative” who “wouldn’t go so far as to call herself an artist” and Peckham girl born and bred.

Anisa described the exhibition as an opportunity for young black artists to jump-start their careers by getting exposure for their work, while networking with one another.

“My goal is to help black art be accessible to the community and help black talent be seen,” she said. “We often have a lot less opportunities.”

Anisa initially planned to exhibit only Southwark-based artists, yet soon extended this to London and then the UK, after her call-out received an overwhelming response.

Ketachi Uba-Ifegwu, whose digital prints were exhibited at the event, described her work as “a love letter to black women to celebrate how beautiful we are in a world where we are not often celebrated.”

As the 22-year-old from Hertfordshire’s first exhibition, Ketachi said this event was “really encouraging” and gave her the “self-belief” to put more artwork out there.

“Everyone should be considered no matter how big their platform is,” she

said. “There is so much talent out there that just does not have the platform.”

Another artist at the exhibition, Belle Suga, 22, from Hackney, saw the exhibition as purposefully challenging the negative stereotypes about race, which “we can get bogged down in”, and instead putting forward something more positive.

“A lot of people expect a message about struggle, history or colonialism from black artists. My work is a celebration of a world I want to live in.

“It reflects what I see in my life: black women in normal situations, like in the home or cooking, rather than being politicised.”

Anisa “saw the need” for her project, after organising an exhibition for Black History Month last year.

“I know it sounds like I might be dreaming a big dream, but I feel like something like this is truly needed.

“The art industry favours people from privileged backgrounds. Only certain types of people are allowed to get through, but art should be open to all,” she added.

This was important Anisa believed so that everyone could “learn more” about one another and see the “immense contribution” that black culture and art has to offer to wider society.

“Cutting a long story short”, the idea

to create the exhibition was sparked by Anisa viewing the struggles of her friends as they tried to establish themselves as artists.

“I heard from a lot of mates how hard it is to make a break in the art world”, says Anisa. “I thought we had to change that.”

Anisa was also scathing of what she saw as “tokenistic” exposure for black and ethnic minority artists at mainstream galleries. “It is like they understand the need to promote diversity, without really caring. Black artists are used, rather than valued for what they can contribute.

“Fundamentally, the art industry has thrived of black creatives, but they do not get the appreciation they deserve,” she added.

Anisa’s road to becoming a curator began during childhood when she taught herself how to sow and paint, although she still “couldn’t draw to save her life”.

But for Anisa this project was just the start.

“I feel like I am Google, but twenty times over,” she said. “I eat, dream and breath creativity. I am going to sleep and dreaming of new projects.”

The artwork of 12 “exceptionally talented” black women will be on display at Peckham levels until the 9th of April.

Two Latin American artists based in the UK are being given the opportunity to produce a project with Latin Elephant, the South London Gallery and Gasworks at the end of June and July, respectively.

The aim of the initiative is to create “artistic exchange” and “experimentation”, with topics focusing on redevelopment, place, identity, urban space and belonging.

All projects must take Elephant and Castle as their case and starting point.

Artists of all ages and at every stage of their career are invited to apply for the project, which is supported by an Arts Council England National Lottery grant.

Council earns £278K fining drivers on ONE ROAD in peckham in just SIX MONTHS

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Furious drivers in Peckham have been slapped with more than £278,000 in fines in just six months, a Freedom of Information request has revealed.

Southwark Council earnt the hefty sum from penalty charge notices handed to drivers in a no-traffic zone on Goldsmith Road.

The Freedom of Information request showed that nearly 8,000 fines were issued to drivers who went down the road between August 2021 and January 2022.

Southwark raked in the most money from the traffic zone in October 2021, earning more than £125,000 from 2,448

fines.

Cars and motorcycles have been banned by Southwark Council from driving down Goldsmith Road from Meeting House Lane since the start of the lockdown in 2020.

But locals have said signs in the area and recent road changes are confusing, leading many drivers to break the rules by mistake.

"These new, modern signs are not clear," said Collin Manley, a double glazing installer based on the corner of Goldsmith Road. "People don't realise what they mean, especially in this modern code, as we have all been brought up with normal signs."

"The only people they are catching out are those who do not genuinely understand."

Cheapest petrol prices in the area revealed

One driver was caught by the camera, as the News spoke to Collin on 14 March.

Collin also complained that recent changes to the roads in the local area were worsening problems for drivers.

He pointed out that during the Coronavirus pandemic the council blocked off several turnings into the Goldsmith Road with large potted plants and benches.

However, these barriers were later removed as they created "problems" for the emergency services, claimed Collin, and replaced with a camera that automatically fines those turning into the road.

"They are putting all this new stuff in roads people use year in, year out," said Collin.

"Where in the highway code does it say

you can put a bloody bench in the middle of the street?" he asked. "It is ridiculous."

Collin said the cameras had "slaughtered" his business by decimating passing trade, and that many delivery drivers coming from outside the area to his shop had been fined, after unknowingly driving into the road.

"It is a money-making scheme," says Collin, "there's no reason for it and it does not benefit anyone, the only people who benefit is that Southwark Council, but I call them a few other things.

"I have been here over 30 years and in all that time we have never seen any problems with traffic in the area," he added.

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Fuel prices across the country hit record highs last week, as Russia's war in Ukraine continues to drive up the price of crude oil around the world.

The average price for a litre of petrol hit £1.63 last Sunday , March 13, after rising above £1.60 for the first time. Diesel remained above £1.73 a litre.

A full tank of petrol now costs almost £88, while diesel “has now gone over £92”, said a RAC spokesperson.

Although prices are set to ease after hitting these record highs, Nathan Piper at the oil and gas researcher Investec, said people "need to get ready for what could be continued increases."

He told MPS this was the "lull before the storm".

Council claims 'excellent progress' on key goals, but what about the ones that are not going so well? exclusive

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council says it has made "excellent progress" on a number of key objectives, although performance on others remains unclear.

Significant steps towards tackling unemployment, homelessness, poverty and the climate emergency were highlighted in the council's interim performance report published last week on March 8.

But their progress towards other important objectives, surrounding pollution, diversity and housing, was not clear, with the council recognising "this has not been an easy time for any of Southwark's residents."

Other areas the council said it would take action on have become worse, and

were not mentioned at all in the review.

The council's goals were set out in a plan, which outlined what it wanted to do and the work it would do to achieve this between 2018 - 2022.

Some of the council's key achievements since 2018 it claims are: • Supporting over 73,000 vulnerable residents during the pandemic • Developing a new equalities framework • Helping more than 5,500 locals get jobs • Halving the council's carbon emissions and planting 10,000 trees • Rolling out free school meals to nursery schools and providing free meals over the school holidays The council also claimed it had helped 300 people off the streets and into longterm accommodation, launched a new young person's mental health-drop in centre, alongside opening the Walworth Library, which sees 2,000 visitors per week.

‘Delighted’ council appoints new chief executive Althea

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has appointed Althea Loderick as its new chief executive following an "extensive" recruitment process.

"I am hugely honoured and excited to be given the opportunity," said Loderick (pictured).

"I’ve been a Londoner all my life so know what an iconic borough Southwark is with an interesting past and a great future.

“I can’t wait to be part of shaping this decade in collaboration with the people who live and work here,” she added.

Loderick's start date is yet to be confirmed.

Her appointment follows an announcement by the current chief executive, Eleanor Kelly, in September 2021 that she is retiring next year, after a decade in the post. Kelly was paid £216,236 per year by the council.

"I couldn’t be happier to welcome Althea to Southwark," said Cllr Kieron Williams, leader of Southwark Council.

"Through the appointment process, her passion for Southwark, our values, and our ambitions shone through."

Chief executives are the head of a council's permanent staff. They have a number of important responsibilities, including advising the council's elected leadership, planning the objectives and delivery of local services, and negotiating on behalf of the local authority with the government and private sector.

Chief executives wield considerable influence over council policy.

Loderick, a graduate of Thames Valley University, has decades of experience working in local government. She is currently the chief executive at Newham Council and has held several other senior roles at Brent and Waltham Forest Councils.

Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz, where Loderick has worked since 2019, said: "I want to thank Althea for what she has achieved in her role as the chief executive over the past three years. I wish her well in her new role.

"As a council, we are not where we want to be yet and we have much more to do," she continued.

Cllr Williams added that he was "delighted" to welcome Loderick as Southwark Council's first "black" Chief Executive.

"Our borough has one of the largest Black, Asian and minority ethnic populations in the country, and this appointment is another historic advance in our work to ensure that diversity is represented at all levels of decision making in Southwark," he said.

Only seventeen per cent of the council's Chief Executive Department is from a black, Asian or ethnic minority background, according to a 2018 - 19 report, and there remains a considerable ethnic pay gap across the council.

The decision to appoint Loderick is subject to a formal decision by the Council Assembly next Wednesday, March 23, although it is likely she will be approved.

there was no mention of the council's progress towards a number of other targets it had set for itself, and many of these problems had become worse under their tenure.

In a plan published in 2020, the council had said it would "improve air quality", especially around schools.

Air quality in Southwark currently breaks World Health Organisation safety levels, The News reported earlier in the month, meaning people in the borough continue to inhale dangerous levels of poisonous fumes.

This commitment was not mentioned in the review.

The council also vowed in 2020 it would "ensure the top of the council's workforce is proportionately representative of Southwark's black Asian and ethnic minority population by 2030."

Eighty-three per cent of the council's chief executive department remain white, according to a 2018 -19 report.

Progress towards another council objective is similarly stunted. Only half of the 1,000 green jobs they promised have been delivered so far, although there is still time to reach the goal.

An increase in the number of council homes by 1,000, either built or on-site, was also planned for 2022.

Yet some 225 new council homes have been built, while 1,586 are under construction. The council said this means they are "exceeding our target".

The local authority recognised there had been many challenges during this period, which had hampered its ability to reach its objectives.

"COVID-19 has continued to have a severe and wide-ranging impact on the council and its ability to deliver services to residents over the past year," read the performance review.

"However, despite the enormous financial and organisational pressure placed on us by the pandemic, we have

continued to deliver," it added.

The 'Council Plan' was first approved in November 2018. However, following the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, it was redrawn in 2020 into the 'Borough Plan'.

“I am proud the council has continued delivering for our residents, even during the most difficult years we have faced as a borough," said Cllr Kieron Williams, leader of Southwark Council.

"Over the last four years, we have taken bold action to make Southwark fairer, greener and safer, to build more homes local people can afford, to create jobs and opportunities for residents, and to give young people in our borough the best start in life."

He continued: "I’d like to say a huge thanks to all our staff, partners, community groups, volunteers, businesses and residents who have helped us to deliver our ambitious Borough Plan.

"There is still more to do."

More price increases are on the horizon - this time it's Council Tax

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Council Tax is set to rise by a hefty 2.99% in April, after Southwark Council voted for the changes last month.

The hike means families living in a Band D property will have to find an extra £67 each year, with their council tax bill now totalling £1,595.

A Band H home will have to pay £3,189 every year from 1 April - up by £133 on the previous financial year.

The majority of boroughs in London are planning on increasing their council tax this year.

Neighbouring Lambeth and Lewisham have also increased bills by 2.99%, which is the maximum permitted by the government.

This increase comes as families are already expecting their monthly bills to go up in April when the energy price cap is lifted and National Insurance contributions rise.

Added to this is the war in Ukraine which will push up living costs even further, as the price of fuel soars.

The council has said the rise is necessary in order to ensure a "balanced budget" and "protect services for our most vulnerable residents".

"The 2022-23 budget has been prepared in the context of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic," read the council's website.

"In addition, the council has also had to manage the continually increasing demands and pressures on front-line services, particularly adult social care, children’s services, homelessness services and welfare support, as well as fund local government pay and higher inflation costs," it added.

Council Tax, along with Business Rates, fees and government grants, is used to fund vital local services, such as education, libraries and rubbish collection.

April's 2.99% rise is formed of a 1.99% increase to Council Tax and a 1% increase to the adult social care precept, in line with government guidance.

The adult social care precept is used to fund the care of elderly and disabled

residents.

Income generated from this charge is ring-fenced and can only be spent by the council on adult social care.

An additional £1.3 million will be earnt for adult social care from the increased precept.

The council said government cutbacks had forced them to increase Council Tax. "Since 2010-11, like other councils, Southwark has experienced significant reductions in government funding," they said.

"Despite the challenges, the council remains committed to protecting services for the most vulnerable people, cutting waste and mitigating as much of the impact of cuts as possible," it added.

Last month the News revealed that Southwark has seen the largest council tax hike in London since 2017 with bills rising by a whopping 36.8%.

However, the council claimed this was a "theoretical" increase due to the number of new homes it had built in the borough, and did not represent an increase for individual households.

Work begins on regeneration of Walworth Town Hall

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Work to regenerate Walworth Town Hall into a "flexible workspace" and "community hub" has begun this week, Southwark Council has announced.

The old town hall on Walworth Road will contain studios and workspaces, "ideal for start-ups" alongside a new community space on the ground floor.

The Grade II listed building, which was built in 1865, has been closed off to the public since it was partially destroyed by a fire in March 2013.

Work is expected to be finished at the end of 2023.

"This much-loved heritage building is the jewel in Walworth’s crown," said Cllr Helen Dennis, cabinet member for the climate emergency and sustainable development.

"Bringing it back into use, with both work and community space included, will give [the building] new purpose and a new lease of life which means it can continue to be enjoyed by many more generations to come," she added.

The restoration project is being delivered by developer General Projects in partnership with the council.

On their website, General Projects wrote they were approached by the council to "reinvent the property for the 21st century, as a dynamic cultural community and workspace hub".

The Gross Development Value of the regeneration is £25 million. This figure refers to what the property will be worth on the open market once the redevelopment is finished.

General Projects will operate the town hall once it is regenerated, meanwhile

the council says "a third party" will be chosen by a "new independent management board" to operate the community space.

This board, which will help shape and oversee the space, will be chaired by local resident Manisha Patel and comprise other members of the Walworth community.

The public will be able to access the facility all year round for a variety

of uses, such as meetings, events, talks, performances, arts and crafts, workshops and classes.

A new third floor and mezzanine level will be created inside the building, there will be a new ground floor entrance onto Walworth Square, and cycle storage and outdoor amenity spaces will be placed outside.

'Smell so bad it knocks you down' - says family in social housing left with horrible odour for months Notting Hill Genesis claim there is nothing wrong

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A horrific pong in their home has forced a Peckham family to "sleep with blankets over their noses", despite raising the issue with the housing association several months ago.

Althea Sinclair, who lives in Dayak Court on Brayards Road with her 12-year-old son, has had a "smell so bad it knocks you down" inside her flat for the past six months.

The odour, which resembles stagnant water, comes from her bathroom, toilet and washing machine, leading Althea to believe the trouble is caused by a fault with the plumbing inside her flat.

"It is worse at night," says Althea, "sometimes I am just lying there crying, I cannot even sleep and I have to put blankets under my nose."

Althea has raised the issue with her housing association Notting Hill Genesis "several times", yet she

claims they have so far failed to fix the problem.

She has spent nearly £100 of her own money on special chemicals and a private plumber to try to address it during this time, alongside having continually to burn incense to keep the terrible smell at bay.

Notting Hill Genesis has claimed there is no issue at Althea's flat.

“In addition to our contractors, our surveyors and housing officers have visited and no smell was noted," said a spokesperson for the housing association. "We have given the resident advice on how to contact the local environmental health team in case they can help identify the smell and provide us with any information on whether further work is needed."

Althea claims she first complained to Notting Hill Genesis - one of the largest housing associations in London - in September 2020, however it was not until January this year that they attempted to fix the fault.

Notting Hill Genesis contested this: “Repairs were initially carried out in September 2021 to replace an area of pipework and remove a blockage from the kitchen sink. A further repair was carried out on Wednesday as the

toilet was draining slowly. This was unblocked and left in working order.

“The resident has made further repair requests which we are now reviewing.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time," they added.

Althea and her son's clothes have begun to stink due to the stench in their house, she says, and this is causing their family much distress and upset.

She also claims that her complaints have been met with dismissal and she herself has been blamed for the plumbing problems inside her flat.

"I am not stupid," says Althea. "They are trying to blame me by saying I am dirty. They even said I needed to go to see a doctor.

"It is outrageous," she added.

Althea says there has been "one problem after another" during the twelve years she has lived at the property, including issues surrounding the state and security of her building.

One morning her son found a collapsed man in front of their door, which she claims happened because the front door to the building was not properly secured.

"This is not about money," she said. "I pay every month and am an exemplary tenant. But we are suffering here."

Restoration efforts will first involve demolition work, the installation of structural frames, restoring the facade, roofing and an internal fitting out, after the external work to the building will occur.

Once the old town hall is restored and refurbished it will be taken off the Heritage at Risk register, where it has been for nearly a decade.

The regeneration of Walworth Town Hall follows several other large-scale developments on the Walworth Road, such as the Southwark Heritage Centre and Walworth Library.

It once served as the headquarters of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark and was renamed Southwark Town Hall, yet ceased to be the seat of local government when the enlarged Borough of Southwark was formed in 1965.

Pay out after abuse survivor was put in two separate drug dens

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has been ordered to pay compensation to an abuse survivor after placing him in two separate squalid homes used for drug dealing.

The unnamed man - known as Mr B - was attacked by "the resident drug dealer" in the first private rented house that Southwark found for him in 2018.

He had fled his previous home because of domestic abuse, and was homeless, according to the council's own records.

Mr B tried to complain to the council, but was referred back to his landlord, according to the local government and social care ombudsman, which investigated his case. But the landlord's agent told him to go to the council with complaints instead.

After he became suicidal, Southwark accepted he was vulnerable and moved him onto a new home - also used for drug dealing. The new home was also close to Mr B's former abuser.

The council's own reports about the new home found that there were "holes in the wall, stained carpets, open waste in the kitchen, and electrical sockets off the walls" - a way of hiding drugs as well as regular drug dealing by the other tenants. His door had no lock or handle and could not be closed.

Southwark eventually gave Mr B a council flat in September 2020, nearly two and a half years after he was first

placed in temporary accommodation.

The ombudsman said the council had admitted that it could have supported Mr B better when he raised issues about the accommodation. But it added that that Mr B did not raised these issues at first and he accepted the property.

Mr B said that he did not know how to complain. He tried to ask for help using the contact details in the communal area of his home, but he did not know that these were out of date and his emails were not being read.

The inspector said in their report: "While I am pleased the Council has acknowledged that its service should have been better, overall it has not recognised the impact its shortcomings, lack of clarity and lack of support, had on Mr B and his wellbeing. It left Mr B uncertain as to whether the Council would help him, and caused frustration and distress to him, despite knowing that he was vulnerable due to his mental health."

The report added that Southwark had offered the man £250 in compensation, but told them to give him £500 instead. The inspector added that the council should apologise to Mr B, train up one of its officers better and make sure staff know about housing requirements.

The News has contacted Southwark Council for comment but did not receive a response at the time of going to press.

COVID-19 vaccination for vulnerable children

EVELINA LONDON Children’s Hospital is inviting children from south London, who are aged five to 11 and most at risk of COVID-19, to get vaccinated.

Children who are at serious risk of complications from COVID-19 or live with someone with a weakened immune system, in line with the Government’s guidelines, can get the vaccine.

Six-year-old Idris Dean received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at the Evelina London vaccination centre. She attended with her mother Daniela who suffers from severe asthma and fibromyalgia and is at increased risk of serious illness from COVID-19.

Daniela, 38, said: “I’m really pleased Idris has received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Idris and her younger sister both have autism and don’t understand social distancing, so going out is difficult and because I have severe asthma and fibromyalgia we have to be extra careful.

“I was nervous before Idris had her jab but the staff in the vaccination centre were fantastic. They were really friendly and great with Idris.

They took time to explain everything to us and after she had the jab they gave her a goody bag and a certificate and played with her.

“We’re both looking forward to coming back later in the year for her second dose.”

Janet Powell, Director of Nursing at Evelina London, said: “COVID-19 can be very severe in children at high risk and the vaccine is the best way to protect them from serious illness. It can also help to reduce transmission to others, including vulnerable family members who the children may live with. We’re encouraging parents to make sure they book the jab at our vaccination centre to give their children the best possible protection.”

Kazeem Reaves Odunsi, assistant service manager for the vaccination programme, at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “The vaccine centre is very child friendly and suitable for children and young people who are vulnerable and have additional needs.

“Our vaccinators are highly trained and know how to make children feel as comfortable as possible. I really enjoy helping children feel at ease.

Parents and guardians of children who are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccination should receive a letter either from the NHS or GP, inviting their child to take up the offer of a vaccine.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The clatter of plates and hum of conversation ring out across a busy restaurant floor. It could be lunchtime in any one of the many fashionable restaurants around London Bridge and Borough.

But Brigade is quite different - the restaurant, in a former fire station on Tooley Street, not far from the station - sees itself as a company with a social mission. Some 6,000 people who

are homeless or with other serious problems, like addiction, have been supported by the restaurant over the ten years since it was funded.

Out of these, 149 have been directly employed as apprentices, with thousands more going through employability programmes the restaurant runs.

For head chef Marcilio Da Silva, that means his job is more complicated than just making food.

"I’m not just a chef, I’m a life coach, I’m their mum sometimes," he said, speaking from a table at the restaurant.

"At the end of the day what we want to achieve is make sure they feel at home.

"Sometimes when they come here they have no hope. They have no confidence. When you have no hope to live your life. They don’t even know what to expect from the next day.

"Sometimes they are a little bit down, and that's the hardest part of this job.

We always say, we don't give up on

them. Some of them have addictions, some of them have mental struggles.

We deal with them individually - we treat them like people."

"The hardest part of my job is to make them believe in themselves. But some of these skills, anyone can learn."

Asked if it could be frustrating to work with people whose lives often lack structure, Marcilio said: "Absolutely not. This place brings my two passions together: cooking and helping people.

What we want to achieve every day is to give a chance to these people who have had difficult times."

Chief executive Simon Boyle set up the live-fire restaurant in 2011. He said he was inspired by his work helping with the relief effort after the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka.

"I really learned how you can lose everything just like that. It's not necessarily your fault but sometimes stuff happens to you and that in turn has inspired me here.

Discussing the apprentice programme, he said: "Sometimes it’s a quick process, with other people you need a much longer, deeper relationship. It can be very satisfying, but also very frustrating when it doesn’t quite work."

Since the pandemic, Simon and Marcilio have got fewer referrals for vulnerable people from their usual source: the Jobcentre and homelessness charities like Shelter and Crisis. Simon said the restaurant was now working with teenagers as young as sixteen through pupil referral units - special schools for children who have been kicked out of mainstream schools - as a preventative step.

The restaurant recently took on two teenagers from a pupil referral unit - and both did so well that Simon has since offered them jobs. The only problem is that one of them is facing "a very serious court case" in July could be sent to prison.

Simon added: "We’re now negotiating with the court about this being a much better route than prison."

Asked how staff helped these children, whom others would be hesitant to put near a busy restaurant kitchen, Simon said: "We give them some love. I don’t mean that in a weird way. They’re coming into a family. Most of these kids don’t have families. Maybe they’ve been born in a certain place, or they've had experiences on an estate that have pushed them down the wrong way.

"Maybe they’ve got quite a lot of mental health issue that then the families haven’t been able to detail with.

They get pushed around the education system. So love is really important.

Simon said that the teacher of one of the teenagers who was recently in on work experience was shocked that he wasn't wearing a hoodie in photos. "It takes time to open up all that," he said.

"Of course he wasn’t in a hoodie - we’re not going to let that happen."

Walworth developer is ‘prioritising student accommodation over affordable housing’

and Residents’ Association, a housing estate opposite Pullens Gardens, said: “What we need is social housing for families offered at affordable and social rents.

“The current proposal towers over Pullens buildings and our local park.

Pullens Gardens is directly in front of this building and was redesigned and opened

in 2015.

“It would be a great asset for new families with children as it is a well-loved community green space.

“The TRA is not opposed to housing students locally but this is not an appropriate location for it.”

The plans are currently in the preapplication phase in which the developer

consults with the council before lodging an official planning application.

The proposals come amidst an affordable housing crisis in the borough, with the News reporting that Southwark Council has vowed to deliver 40,000 homes by 2036.

Peter Gallagher, a spokesman for BECG, a consultancy working with the developers, said: “The site is not an allocated residential site within the Southwark Local Plan but is located within the Major Town Centre location for Elephant and Castle, where student accommodation is considered acceptable.

“There is demand for high-quality, well-managed student space in this location to support the University and HE colleges in Southwark and central London. The borough needs to support a range of different accommodation types, and this is perfectly suited to its location.

Affordable housing will also be provided as part of this proposal.

“We are waiting for our planning application to be validated and look forward to delivering the local benefits that will come from this development – an improved public realm, new commercial space, and a massive uplift in economic spend locally in local businesses and shops by our residents.”

Just under 15,000 fires were reported to the Brigade in London last year of which Southwark made up 4.36 per cent.

The top cause of the 14,929 fires in Southwark were "secondary fires", which were responsible for around half of the borough's blazes.

Secondary fires are generally defined as small outdoor fires, not necessarily involving people or property, including

burning rubbish or fires in derelict buildings and vehicles. Cookers and cigarettes were the next most common known causes of fire in Southwark say firefighters, creating 70 and 29 blazes respectively.

"Fires caused by smoking materials including cigarettes, roll-ups, cigars and pipes, result in more deaths than any other type of fire," said a spokesperson from the London Fire Brigade.

“Discarding cigarettes without ensuring

they’re completely extinguished first not only puts yourself at risk but also your family, friends and neighbours," they added.

Plugs, cabling and plugs followed as the fifth most common cause of fire, causing 22 blazes in the borough last year.

Firefighters did not know what caused around 6 per cent of fires in Southwark in 2021, with 41 of the borough's fires having an "unknown" cause.

This year 104 fires have so far been

reported to the Brigade in Southwark, compared to 2,430 across the capital.

Southwark is currently the third-highest borough for fire numbers in London, surpassed only by Tower Hamlets (first) and Newham (second).

The Brigade released a number of tips on how people can prevent fires. These included: keeping an eye on children and pets in the kitchen, double-checking cookers and hobs are turned off, and having heat alarms fitted in your house.

Developers Thorstone Land & Property Ltd want to turn 31 Amelia Street, currently the site of a Reed Partnership Office, into a 152-bedroom student accommodation and commercial building.

Diana Cochrane, Walworth Society committee member and local resident said: "Walworth badly needs affordable housing and what we are getting is a plan for yet more student housing from a greedy developer.

“In the last few years, a huge amount of student housing has been built at the north end of the Walworth Road.

MASSIVE 651 FIRES ACROSS THE BOROUGH DURING THE PAST YEAR

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk There were on average nearly two fires a day in Southwark last year, according to figures released by the London Fire Brigade.

A total of 651 fires were recorded by firefighters in the borough in 2021 equating to 1.8 every day.

This number made Southwark the second worst borough for blazes in the

Firefighters recommend having a takeaway after 'cooking' fire in East Dulwich last week A "quickly tackled" home fire in East Dulwich has led the London Fire Brigade to suggest "ordering a takeaway" instead.

The blaze broke out on Overhill Road last week (8 March) in a maisonette on the fourth floor of a 12-storey block just before midday.

Firefighters said they "quickly tackled" the fire and brought it under control, although part of the maisonette was damaged by the flames.

The cause of the blaze is believed to have involved cooking.

Following the blaze, a spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "Not feeling 100%? Order a takeaway."

"If you're very tired, have been drinking alcohol or are taking medication that might make you drowsy, it's safer not to risk it."

No injuries were reported to the emergency services.

The Brigade was called at 11:54 a.m. on 8 March, and the fire was

brought under control one hour later at 12:37 p.m.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters attended the scene.

They came from multiple stations across south London, including Forest Hill, New Cross and Brixton.

"Fires are more likely to start in the kitchen than any other room in the home," said the Brigade spokesperson.

"Cooking should never be left unattended on the hob or grill - if you have to leave the kitchen, turn off the heat.”

The spokesperson offered several other fire safety tips while cooking at home, alongside the takeaway option.

These included: not leaving cooking unattended on the hob or grill, keeping your oven, hob, cooker hood and extractor fan clean, as built-up fat and grease can be highly flammable, and double-checking that all appliances are turned off when you have finished cooking.

Peckham blaze

Around 25 firefighters and four fire engines were called out to a fire raging through flats in Peckham this week.

The fire broke out in a block of flats on Hanover Park in the early hours of the morning on Monday, March 14.

Firefighters clad in special breathing apparatus assisted five people to safety down the building's stairs. Part of a four-roomed flat on the third floor of the building was badly damaged by the flames. No injuries were reported to the emergency services.

An extractor hood is believed by the London Fire Brigade to have been involved in the fire, although its exact cause is currently unknown.

“There were smoke alarms fitted inside the affected flat, but they didn’t raise the alarm," said a spokesperson from the Brigade.

"This incident is a reminder about the importance of ensuring you have working smoke alarms in every room where a fire could start in your home, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen.

"Make sure to test them regularly,” they added.

n Saturday I launched our Labour manifesto for the local elections on May 5th.

Our plan to make Southwark fairer, greener and safer. With more good jobs, safer streets and estates, more homes local people can afford, a greener future and real support for Southwark residents who are struggling.

Since I became leader of the council a year and a half ago, I have had the privilege of meeting thousands of people from every walk of life in Southwark. It is the hopes, dreams and ideas that you and many others have shared that have shaped our Labour pledges to you.

Whilst successive Liberal Democrat and Conservative governments have cut funding for local council services by two thirds, Labour has delivered on the promises we made to you.

Let’s take our key pledges from 2018 in turn.

We promised more quality homes for local people, and we are set to exceed our target to have 2,500 new council homes built or started on site by May this year. We promised to create more jobs and opportunities for local people. We have created 5,500 new jobs and over 2,000 apprenticeships, more than any other London borough.

We promised to make Southwark greener.

We’ve planted over 10,000 trees, invested in our parks and delivered on our promise to halve the council’s carbon emissions. Our plan to tackle the climate emergency has been independently ranked as in the top two in London.

We promised to give young people the best

start in life. We have raised standards in our schools with 95% now Good or Outstanding, and we have ensured that over 16,000 children had access to food over the school holidays.

We promised to tackle inequalities in health.

We have supported over 10,000 people through the Southwark Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub and introduced a Residential Care Charter to protect vulnerable residents.

We have done all of this whilst also stepping up to support our community through Covid supporting 73,000 vulnerable residents, rolling out the vaccine and providing over £250 million of support to protect local businesses and jobs.

That shows we can be trusted to deliver. It shows that when we say will invest in making our streets safer, with a £2 million antisocial behaviour taskforce and upgraded street lighting and CCTV, we will.

It shows that when we say we will start another 1,000 new council homes by 2026 and 500 new homes at discounted rents for local key workers, we will.

It shows that when we say we will create 2,000 more green jobs and 2,000 more apprenticeships, we will.

It shows that when we say we will half the council’s carbon emissions again by 2026 and increase the number of parks, nature sites, cycle hangers and electric car charging points, we will.

We must help out at time of war

E

very day now the news from Ukraine gets worse. Millions of Ukrainians have fled. The death toll of soldiers and civilians is mounting. Ukrainian cities are being reduced to rubble. Putin has shelled a town right near the Polish border and there seems no end in sight.

As President Zelenski spoke to us in the House of Commons last week, you couldn’t help but marvel at the extraordinary resistance that the Ukrainians have shown. When Putin first invaded, many expected that when the Russian tanks rolled over the border Ukraine would fall within hours if not days. It is a true David and Goliath situation yet Ukrainians have shown they are prepared to resist and more than two weeks later the Russians have still not been able to take the capital Kiev. Our Government have been right to make it absolutely clear that we deplore the Russian invasion. Ukraine is a sovereign nation and has the right to self-government. And the UK has been right, too, to say that we stand strongly with NATO as the centrepiece of our defence.

As the official opposition we are backing the Government and are showing Putin that the UK is united against this invasion, as is the EU. But as the opposition we have a duty to scrutinise the Government’s response and spell out where they should be doing more.

There are three areas where they are falling short.

Firstly, the Government should be tougher on clamping down on the wealthy Russian oligarchs who use London as the centre to launder their billions.

MP for Camberwell & Peckham work or innovation. They’ve got rich by creaming off the national assets that were privatised when the Soviet Union fell. That money should be in the hands of the Russian people not a few super rich oligarchs.

Secondly we should be doing much more to play our part in helping those who are fleeing from Ukraine. Poland has already taken in more than a million of these refugees but so far our government has let in fewer than 1,000.

And thirdly, the Government should be helping with the impact of the Ukrainian invasion on the cost of living crisis here in the UK. Even before the invasion, families here were struggling with increased costs, particularly with food and energy bills. Russia is a big producer of gas and Ukraine a big producer of food. With supplies interrupted, petrol, energy and food bills are all soaring. We are lucky to be safe here in the UK. But we can’t turn away from the people who are suffering in Ukraine and ignore the effect that it’s having on people’s living standards here. And we must recognise that Putin’s actions are a threat to all democracies.

We must not do anything that will escalate the crisis but we certainly can and should do more to isolate Putin and act in solidarity with Ukraine.

£278,000 of fines on one road - are Low Traffic Neighbourhoods a cash cow?

T

he latest shocking figure of over £278,000 racked up in fines on just one Peckham road in six months does little to disprove claims that the council is using Low Traffic Neigbourhoods (LTN) as a cash cow.

It takes time to win over the hearts and minds of your residents, to get them to change over to a car-free life in order to save the planet. So simply imposing restrictions on them seems to be the way Southwark is going – and it helps when a bundle can be made in the process.

They are not the only ones - most London councils used emergency active travel funding to make streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians during the pandemic, closing swathes of roads under their control. And on top of that Mayor Sadiq Khan jumped in to close more of the roads under Transport for London’s control.

Bitter battles have ensued and communities are divided with those in support and those against.

But there are a large portion of people in the middle ground agreeing with the environmental messages, but arguing that it must been done with the consent of the local community.

Consultations have come and gone, most notably in Dulwich, in which two thirds of people asked for the system to be scrapped, but the council still went ahead with it. Indeed, a consultation is not a referendum - the council does not have to go with the result. However, as we come closer to an actual local election it is such an issue as this that will be on the forefront of people’s minds.

With rising fuel costs, added to rising costs generally, many may have already given up the idea of car ownership altogether, but nothing is that simple and exceptions need to be made for those who need to drive.

In April last year we revealed that Southwark Council raked in £2.5 million in fixed penalty changes from LTN cameras in Dulwich and Walworth in its first three months of issuing the fines.

Soon after a blue badge holder exemption was announced and many of the motorists who were issued with more than one fine were not asked to pay the full amount. This all points to a system that is far from ideal.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable various works to be carried out, it made, an order, the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that it proposes to make the above Order under sections 6 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

2. The effect of the Order would be to introduce a pedestrian and cycle zone in Hillsboro Road in the vicinity of Alleyn’s Junior School. All motor vehicles except permit holders would be prohibited from entering or proceeding in Hillsboro Road, between 8.00 am and 8.45 am and between 3.15 pm and 4.00 pm (Monday to Friday, during school term time, as determined by the Alleyn’s Junior School).

Permits allowing vehicles to enter the ‘School Streets’ pedestrian and cycle zone would be available to residents of premises located within the zone, to registered carers or residents of premises located within the zone, to disabled person’s blue badge holders who are school staff, carers or dropping off and/or collecting pupils to the school and to SEND vehicles, by application to the Council. Exemptions would also apply in respect of emergency service vehicles.

The Hamlet slip to second consecutive defeat and out of play-off places

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET have slipped out of the National League South play-off places after their third consecutive defeat.

Following their 1-0 loss to Havant & Waterlooville at Champion Hill last weekend, Gavin Rose’s side went down 2-0 away to Maidstone United on Tuesday night.

Joan Luque put the hosts in front in the 30th minute at the Gallagher Stadium and they took that lead into the break.

minutes into the second half.

Hakan Hayrettin’s side started as they meant to go on as Michael Phillips’ close-range header was brilliantly kept out by Dulwich goalkeeper Charlie Grainger in the seventh minute.

After Reise Allassani was booked for a high challenge on Regan Booty, Grainger was called into action again as he saved down low from Luque’s shot in the 24th minute.

Maidstone weren’t denied for long as six minutes later Luque met Roarie Deacon’s cross for his 20th goal of the season.

There was barely any let-up for Dulwich and for Grainger and he was

needed again 36 minutes in to deny Luque after Sanchez Ming had failed to clear.

Giovanni McGregor had the visitors’ first proper chance four minutes before half-time but couldn’t hit the target.

Dulwich began the second half determined to find a route back into the game and Jordan Higgs had their next effort only to scuff wide.

Taofiq Olomowewe then followed Allassani into the referee’s notebook for a rash challenge on Phillips.

Moments later the home side doubled their lead when Barham capitalised on a mistake at the back from Olomowewe to clip past Grainger.

ulwich Hamlet had no luck in Kent

With five minutes left, Dulwich winger Darren McQueen had a golden opportunity to get one back but again couldn’t get his attempt on goal despite being unmarked in the box after being found from a free-kick.

Booty was shown a yellow card for stopping a counter-attack in the 89th minute as Dulwich failed to get anything from the game in front of an attendance of 2,005.

It was a nineteenth league win of the season for the Stones who are unbeaten at home in four months.

They are second in the table on 63 points, behind Dorking Wanderers on goal difference.

There was more bad news on a difficult night for the Hamlet as Rose saw Ronnie Vint go off injured late in the first half.

Dulwich, who are now eighth, a place and a point off the play-off positions, are back at home this weekend when they host twelfth-place Slough Town.

Kick-off at Champion Hill is 3pm on Saturday.

Dulwich Hamlet get revenge as Lionesses falter

By Jeff Burnige at St Paul’s sport@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIONESSES narrowly lost this derby against neighbours Dulwich Hamlet in their London & South East Regional Women’s Premier Division clash at St Paul’s in Rotherhithe last Sunday.

The Hamlet came looking for revenge for the Lionesses’ 3-0 victory at Champion Hill in January, and introduced debutant goalkeeper Rebecca Sargent, on loan from highflying National League Hashtag United.

The injury-hit Lionesses started brightly enough, but the maturity and composure of the Hamlet side became increasingly evident in a very physical game, and they deservedly opened the scoring through an excellent Brit Saylor header from a corner-kick from the left.

The Hamlet were looking focussed on getting that revenge win in front of a big crowd including a large contingent from Dulwich, and the young Lionesses never really got going as an attacking force after the goal.

The back three of Amy Nash,

Sophie Chapman and Poppy Payne were solid throughout, but the Hamlet controlled the midfield, and it was only when young Kaydence Kabadaki came on up front that the Dulwich defence were put under any real pressure.

This was a big let-down for Millwall after the victory at Fulham the previous week, and manager Jack Wheeler and his assistant Alex Russell will have plenty to work on in training before this Sunday’s match with Saltdean United at home.

Kick-off is at 2pm and admission is again free for all supporters.

There was a flurry of first-half bookings, both sides hitting the crossbar, big tackles, an away player booed for alleged simulation, all in front of the biggest Den crowd of the season.

It says something about where Millwall were ahead of the match that more people wanted to see this than the south London derby against Crystal Palace in the third round of the FA Cup in January.

The only thing they would have been disappointed with was not being able to cheer a goal.

But at least after no attempts at the target against Blackburn Rovers – the first time for a team in five seasons and 2,649 games in the Championship – the Lions were a lot more threatening here.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett felt they had the best chances in open play.

Certainly Benik Afobe will be thinking about the moment when he brilliantly made space for a shot in the box only to send the ball over Joe Lumley’s goal.

Murray Wallace headed onto the top of the crossbar from Scott Malone’s

corner and Jake Cooper would have had his third goal in four games but for Lumley clawing his header away from the top-left corner.

All those opportunities came after the break. Boro went closest in the fourth minute when Marcus Tavernier’s free-kick from 25 yards beat Bartosz Bialkowksi but not the bar.

Bialkowski saved relatively comfortably to deny Folarin Balogun and Paddy McNair as the Lions registered a fourth clean sheet in a row in the league for the first time since February 2017, when they were in League One. They missed out on a fourth consecutive home league win for the first time under Rowett but a point apiece was fair. Boro boss Chris Wilder said afterwards being this close to the top six at this point of the season is enough.

That’s particularly true when you look at where these teams have come from. Boro have jumped from fourteenth before Wilder’s first game last November into promotion contention. Millwall have dragged themselves back into it in more dramatic fashion. Any talk of the playoffs would have seemed fanciful after their 3-0 defeat to Fulham last month.

We’ve been here before, of course, and the side has just fallen short.

In both the 2017-18 and 2019-20

seasons Millwall were still in with a chance of sixth with two games left before they finished eighth.

The hope is they get to the international break not too far away and then are boosted by players returning from injury. They definitely need attacking reinforcements. Sheyi Ojo was probably enjoying his best form before he got injured and if he can get back to that and remain fit then that will give the team more creativity, threat and importantly more of a chance to change a game from the bench. The only out-andout striker there last Saturday, Zak Lovelace, was the only substitute Rowett brought on against Boro.

The irony, of course, is that Millwall’s form ticked up even after they had lost more players in that sector of the pitch to injury – they won five consecutive games without Ojo, Tom Bradshaw and Luke Freeman.

That says everything about the backs-to-the-wall, underdog spirit that has underpinned the side’s recent good form. It becomes an eight-game campaign after the international break and Ojo, Ryan Leonard, and potentially Oliver Burke, should provide more impetus for what hopefully we will be talking about as a final push for the top six.

It is to Rowett and his team’s big credit that we’re even talking about it now.

What the managers said Millwall’s Gary Rowett: “I thought it was a really competitive game. A 0-0 probably wasn’t a fair reflection of the match, there were plenty of moments in both boxes to keep you on your toes.

“I thought both teams competed really well, and it was pretty even. I don’t think there was much in it.

“We had a bit less of the ball than we would have liked, but they’re a difficult team to press and I thought we had the better chances in the game.

Middlesbrough’s Chris Wilder: “They’ve answered our questions [after losing 4-1 against Sheffield United] at arguably the toughest of places, where they do ask the question everywhere – behind the dugout, in the stands, on the pitch.

“They’re on a fabulous run, and they’re a really competitive side, and if you’re weak mentally or physically, they’ll run over the top of you. We weren’t.

“We put in some great challenges, and in a perverse way, I really enjoy coming here because I think it’s a real test of what you’re about as a professional.”

DANIEL BALLARD says he hasn’t seen anything like Millwall’s injury crisis this season – and praised the players for dragging themselves back into the play-off race.

Ballard, 22, was one of the Lions’ best players in the first half of the season before he required knee surgery in early December for an ongoing problem with his meniscus and missed three months.

But despite being without Ballard, and having a total of 20 players unavailable at various times in the campaign, the Lions managed to turn around their poor form at the start of the year and won five consecutive games.

Millwall also registered four clean sheets in a row for the first time since their return to the Championship when they drew with Middlesbrough last weekend.

Even when manager Gary Rowett has got players back available, it is often only to take the place of a newly-injured player.

Ballard had only returned to the bench for two games when he had to come on against Sheffield United for Shaun Hutchinson, after the Lions captain went down with a calf injury.

Ballard was frustrated he wasn’t available to help the side when they went through a difficult spell at the start of the year.

But he was ready when needed and has taken his chance in Hutchinson’s absence.

“The injuries that we’ve had this season, I’ve definitely not seen anything like it.

We’ve been really unfortunate,” Ballard said.

“When players in similar positions get injured you think you want to be fit to step in. It was strange that as soon as I got fit Hutchy felt a niggle in his calf. I suppose that’s football, it’s very rare that everyone stays fit for a full season.

“You’ve just got to be patient but keep yourself fit and ready. For me it was only a couple of games I had to sit on the bench when I got back.

“We’ve really been struggling squadwise and have had a few young players who have come up and travelled because we’ve been without senior players.

“We’ve had to dig deep and maybe it suits us a little bit, being pegged down and having to fight that extra bit.

“The lads have been tired, we haven’t got players to rotate in and out at the moment. We’ve been fighting really hard and maybe it suits us because we’ve been picking up some good results.”

The Lions and the Hatters are currently rivals for the play-off spots.

Millwall had a season-high attendance of 16,734 at The Den for the 0-0 draw against Middlesbrough last weekend.

“It was definitely manageable and it’s something that I’ve had for a while. I’m going to have to just learn to play with it.

I can still put in performances, it doesn’t limit me at all,” Ballard said.

“I might have to do things slightly differently away from football and

managing recovery days. It’s not really affecting my game.

“The injury had nothing to do with the one before. It was one of these freak injuries, I got tackled from behind so there’s not a lot you can do. It was the same knee but it wasn’t the same issue.

It was just unfortunate.”

“Yeah, of course,” Ballard said.

“Someone asked me why I didn’t go back to Blackpool, my time there was brilliant, and this is the answer, basically.

I wanted to be as close to the play-offs as possible and I knew with Millwall we might be in with a shout.

“Fair play to the lads and everyone, while I was injured they managed to put some good results together and we’re right there now. It’s exciting.”

Mahlon Romeo played right wingback for Portsmouth as their play-off chances suffered a blow with their

1-0 defeat at Plymouth on Tuesday night.

Millwall maintain even keel ‘Next game’ the mantra as Lions in play-off hunt

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett is exuding a sense of calm as excitement builds around the Lions’ season and the possibilities of maintaining a topsix challenge in the last part of the campaign.

Millwall are in the hunt for a place in the play-offs at this stage of the season for the third time in the last five years.

Key players such as Shaun Hutchinson, Jake Cooper and Jed Wallace have been here before. They know what’s required to finish in the play-offs. But they also know what it’s like to be in the mix and fall short.

Those three are the only ones in the current squad who won promotion from League One in 2017 and were part of the teams that finished eighth in the Championship in 2017-18 and 2019-20.

As a manager, Rowett has led Burton into the League Two play-offs, twice, and Derby into the Championship play-offs.

It would be hard to tell from Rowett’s demeanour after games if his side has just won or lost. He keeps an even keel and things in perspective.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett says the squad are ‘relaxed’ Rowett wasn’t claiming all was lost after the 3-0 defeat to Fulham in early February and a huge injury list made it appear like that was the case.

And neither was he going to get carried away last Saturday after Millwall extended their unbeaten run to seven games and reduced the gap to sixth to three points after their draw against Middlesbrough.

“I think it’s something I’ve learned over the years,” Rowett said before Wednesday’s game against Huddersfield (after the News had gone to press). “You can’t get too extreme in the Championship, because I’ve seen it where bad runs become really bad runs and then everyone starts becoming negative and pointing the finger a little bit.

“Sometimes it’s about getting that balance and being consistent. It’s very easy to change formation or change the team around when you’re not doing well. But sometimes the best teams and most successful teams have that stability around them.

“It’s something the whole group tries to work hard on. The coaching staff as well have a bit of experience. We’ve just got to try to be positive coming in every Thursday morning [before the next game at the weekend], or keep them down to

earth, whichever way it works.”

Millwall were in nineteenth place after nine games and sixteenth after 29 games this season. They lost their first three league games this year – four consecutive defeats including to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup – in a spell of only one win in their first six Championship matches in 2022.

Yet, despite being down to fourteen fit outfield players at one point, they reeled off five wins in a row to get back into playoff contention.

Rowett described the mood in the camp as “relaxed” after the draw against Boro.

But he maintains the Lions squad have always had the ability to avoid swinging from one extreme to the other.

“When you’ve been on a good run of form the mood in the camp is always a little bit better. But I think the players have been pretty steady all season,” Rowett said.

“There’s always a little bit of balance around how people feel. We’ve had some periods that have been tougher than others but then when you win games of football and are competitive of course the players feel better about what we’re doing.

“The beauty of the Championship is it can go either way, you’re never too far away from the next game so the focus has to be on that.”

Duo head off on Northern trips

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWLALL HAVE been in touch with Northern Ireland over Daniel Ballard and are happy the defender is in safe hands as he heads off on international duty.

Ballard and George Saville were both called up by Ian Baraclough this week for friendlies against Luxembourg away and Hungary at home on March 25 and 28.

Ballard recently returned from a three-month lay-off after knee surgery and then was substituted at half-time against Blackburn Rovers last week.

The centre-back returned to help the Lions to a 0-0 draw against Middlesbrough last weekend and was keen to link up with Northern Ireland in

the next international break.

Saville will be aiming to add to his 31 caps and Ballard to his nine.

Lions boss Gary Rowett will be keeping a close eye on Ballard in particular.

“If I was looking at the perfect scenario for Dan, both games are friendlies, so ideally he would only play in one of those games so there isn’t too much stress on him coming back from injury,” Rowett said.

“But I think Dan loves playing, he’s proud to represent Northern Ireland and he’s had some really good experiences doing so.

“He wants to play. For us and Arsenal maybe you’d look at it and say would it be a little bit better for him if he wasn’t playing in both games.

“But that’s up to Northern Ireland. I’ve spoken to the manager quite a few times and he’s a really good guy, I’ve had some really good conversations with him.

“We trust that they will try to do the best that they can for him.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL HAVE another attacker on the absentee list this weekend as Benik Afobe can’t face parent club Stoke City in the last match before the international break.

Tyler Burey is his likely replacement as the option of switching from 5-21-2 to 5-3-2 and replacing a forward with a midfielder looks difficult with George Evans now also set to be out.

The only out-and-out strikers availableto Gary Rowett are Zak Lovelace, 16, and Tyrese Briscoe, 20.

The Lions should have far more attacking options after the international break when they head into the last eight games of the season.

Stoke City have underachieved this campaign with question marks over the future of manager Michael O’Neill.

The Potters invested heavily this season, bringing in Sam Surridge from Bournemouth in the summer before selling him to Nottingham Forest in January, Ben Wilmot from Watford and Lewis Baker from Chelsea, three of fifteen permanent or loan recruits.

Stoke were fifteenth before the mid-week games, a position below where they finished last season.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett hasn’t ruled out a start for Zak Lovelace against Stoke City on Saturday.

Lovelace only turned sixteen in January but has shown glimpses of his talent and physical maturity after getting his first-team chance when players were out through injury and Covid-19 over the winter.

Rowett will be without striker Benik Afobe who can’t play against his parent club.

Rowett has had to play a number of different forward combinations

in 2022 after injuries to Afobe, Jed Wallace, Tom Bradshaw and Mason Bennett.

Winger Tyler Burey scored on his first start when he played out of position up front in the 2-1 win at Derby County last month.

Wallace has been playing in an attacking midfield role but can also play as part of a front two.

Rowett is assessing his options ahead of the weekend.

“We’re pretty open-minded on Zak. It’s important we manage his minutes at the moment. He’s got to play football, he’s a young player,” Rowett said.

“He’ll be ready because he’ll be desperate to do it.

“We’ve also got Tyler Burey who in

terms of starting has proved that he can do it.

“We’ve got players coming back who are not a million miles away. It just depends on where we are.

“I think at the moment if you’re fit and available you’ve got every chance of starting. That’s probably the simplest way to put it.”

Rowett hopes to have more players back from injury after the international break. He believes that will put positive pressure on the players already in the team as well as give him the chance to freshen up the side.

“If you look at the amount of games we have left, there are players who will be coming back determined to finish the season well,” Rowett said.

“Tom Bradshaw scored seven goals in eleven games [before injury]. If he’s coming back there is no doubt someone like Bradders will be thinking, ‘I want to get into doublefigures’.

“So there’s a real motivation for all of those players coming back. That also adds motivation for the ones that want to stay in the team.

“It will also give us really good opportunities not just to change the game within 90 minutes but to rotate some of that energy into the team for certain games.

Ballard, 22, is on a season-long loan from the Gunners and immediately became a first-team regular before his injury setback in November.

Lions manager Gary Rowett has said he would like to keep Ballard, on another loan or a permanent deal.

Ballard has progressed on the loan ladder from Swindon to Blackpool and now Millwall. He is sure to be in demand next season.

“We haven’t spoken about that yet,” Ballard said when asked if there had been any indications from Arsenal.

“I’m sure it’s something that will be discussed after the end of this season.

“I have to see what the loan manager says and what they feel is best for me.

“At the moment I’m fully focussed on helping Millwall finish as high up the table as possible. I’m really enjoying my time here. It’s a brilliant group of lads, the spirit in the dressing room is great.”

Ballard has said his ultimate aim is to get into the Arsenal side, but that is unlikely to be as soon as next season as he continues his development playing regularly.

Another loan is likely. With Millwall still in the race for promotion, would a season with the Lions in the Premier League be the perfect scenario?

Ballard replied: “That would be brilliant, yeah.”
