Every Southwark Council tenant complains nearly three times a year about their home suffering from disrepair on average - but this figure has gone down by nearly a third since 2010, according to the council's own figures.

in the 2010-2011 financial year, after Labour were elected, replacing the Liberal Democrat/Conservative coalition. This past year, which ends in April, there have been 150, 522 complaints. The council has about 55,000 properties.

In a reply to a question at the recent council assembly by Lib Dem leader Hamish McCallum, Labour's council leader Kieron Williams (pictured) said that Southwark had spent £334 million on housing repairs between 2010 and 2021 - equivalent to about £30 million each year. The council will spend £400 million on repairs and major works over the next four years alone.

Meanwhile damp complaints have stayed largely flat over the same period. The number of damp complaints was not logged until the 2011-2012 financial year, when the figure stood at 1,222. The number of complaints

rose to 2,285 in 2014-15, before dropping again to 1,294 again this year.

Cllr Williams said: "We take reports of mould and damp very seriously, and know the impact in can have on the wellbeing of our residents if not handled quickly. As the below requested data shows, damp and mould is reported in a very small percentage of our overall 55,000 property housing stock."

The News often reports on cases of damp and disrepair in Southwark's council flats that are left for weeks and months at a time.

Cllr Williams added that there were 18,000 homes in a state of disrepair in 2010, when Labour took control of the council - but that 98 per cent of the homes the council owns now meet the government's 'decent homes standard'.

The candidates standing in one area of Southwark will be asked specific questions on subjects around housing, crime, environment and transport. Their answers will be videoed by Southwark News. Our focus group of four local households will watch their answers. Each person’s reaction and opinions in the group will form the basis of our coverage, similar to Gogglebox.

Just like when watching the hit Channel 4 show, we hope that our readers will be more interested in hearing and watching what people like themselves are saying, rather than us simply videoing and covering what the political candidates have to say.

This pilot scheme, which is being assessed by the Public Interest News Foundation, will, it is hoped, give the electorate more of an understanding of what and who they are voting for this May. The one ward out of a total of 23 wards

in the borough we will be focusing on is Newington in Walworth.

It has one of the voter lowest turnouts in Southwark, hovering at around just 30 per cent.

It has some of the highest levels of deprivation but also some of the most expensive housing in London due to its inner city location, with the northern part of the electoral ward being just south of the Elephant and Castle roundabout.

We have already selected our focus group but before coverage starts the Public Interest News Foundation is asking people in Newington to take a quick survey so they can learn about news and democracy in the area.

So if you live in the ward of Newington in Southwark and you are over 18 please scan the QR code. The survey will take about five minutes to complete. All questions are optional.

Camberwell businesses needing a facelift can apply to graffiti their own shopfront!

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A grant has been awarded by Southwark Council to a local art organisation to graffiti shopfronts in Camberwell.

Camberwell Arts, in partnership with Camberwell Identity Group, has secured £2,000 in council funding to give the area an "affordable facelift" by graffitiing shop shutters. They want local artists to apply for the scheme, where they can work with businesses owners to create "eyecatching" and "engaging" shop shutter artwork, which reflects and represents the shop they are partnered with.

The location of the shops has not been determined yet, as Camberwell Arts will call out to all businesses in SE5 to apply to become part of the pilot in the coming weeks.

There will be five shop shutter artworks in total, which will be installed as part of the 2022 Camberwell Arts Festival, running from 4 - 12 June.

Camberwell Arts have said it "welcomes applications from artists and designers working across all disciplines, from street art to sign art, painting to printmaking, creative writing to community arts."

Successful applicants will be paid either £300 to cover their materials and time or £250 for spray paints to create their work.

"We have kept the commissioning fee low to help make the case to local independent shops and keep the project affordable for them," reads Camberwell Art's advert for applicants. "We want to know what you can do on a small budget, and encourage first-time applicants, street artists and students to apply."

Applications must be submitted before 8 April, with successful artists informed on 22 April.

The funding is coming from the £300,000 Southwark High Street Recovery Fund, which was set up following the Coronavirus pandemic outbreak to breathe new life in the borough's high streets and town centres,

while increasing footfall in the area. Some of the objectives of the artistic scheme are to improve the local environment and support local businesses in the wake of the pandemic. Plus there will be an effort to ensure the graffiti promotes the wider Camberwell identity and cultural diversity of the area.

However, Camberwell Arts have also said they want to "enable new audiences to encounter art in the public realm" and "explore the potential of the arts to showcase this unique part of South London.

Through this pilot project, we aim to see if public art can help to prevent unauthorised graffiti and, in doing so, improve our shared public environment," said Kelly Blaney Chair of Camberwell Identity Group and Trustee of Camberwell Arts.

"If successful, we will present an Open & Closed case to local businesses, encouraging them to commission their own shop shutter artworks and create a collective after-hours art gallery for Camberwell," she added.

Rotherhithe woman pleads for witnesses after 81-year-old dad left 'fighting for his life' Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Rotherhithe woman is begging for witnesses to come forward after her elderly father was hospitalised, lost his memory and even had to be taught how to eat again following a probable hit-and-run.

Eighty-one-year-old Rogelio Zapatero - known locally as Roger appears to have been hit by a vehicle at about 7pm on February 12 by the Rotherhithe roundabout and suffered a broken hip, although he has no memory of the incident.

He was rushed to St Thomas', where he has been ever since. Mr Zapatero suffered a heart attack in hospital and his heart stopped for three minutes.

Doctors had to break his ribs in order to resuscitate him, according to his daughter Carmen. He was on a lifesupport machine for twelve days and then on a breathing tube, which has been out for about a week.

He was unable to talk at first and had to be taught how to eat again, but is only allowed mushy foods, because the broken ribs mean he finds it very difficult to cough and has no gag reflex.

Sadly, Mr Zapatero is also now in a state of "post-operative delirium" where he struggles to remember basic things like his age.

"He didn’t know what year it was, or how old he was," Ms Zapatero said of her father. "I asked him to guess how old he might be. He came up with 35.

I didn’t want to let him know he was 81."

Mr Zapatero even struggled to remember his own daughter's name for several seconds, before remembering that it began with 'C' and eventually getting the full word.

Doctors said they don't know how long his delirious state might last - it could be six months, or it could be permanent. "He doesn’t know where

he is, right now he wouldn't be able to live alone," Ms Zapatero said. "He was very independent before."

Ms Zapatero criticised the police investigation, which appears not to have yielded any results, and said she would be making a formal complaint.

She said she had not received any follow-up calls or emails from the police, despite the serious nature of the incident. A CCTV camera in the area belongs to Transport for London (TfL) who said they could only release the footage to police. The Met was contacted for comment on the progress made in the investigation.

Ms Zapatero, who has lived in Rotherhithe for about twenty years, moved her father to the area two years ago so she could keep an eye on him more easily. A former paratrooper and shop manager, he came to the UK from Spain in 1965 to learn English.

"He fell in love with my mum. I don’t think either of them could speak the other person's language," Ms Zapatero said.

In his retirement Mr Zapatero is a keen gardener and reader. "He likes

travelling places, even local places," Ms Zapatero said. "It sounds silly but he loved going to the pound shop and seeing what he would find in there.

But his main love is his grandchildren really.

"He just has a zest for life. He never would say he's had enough of his life.

He's a positive person."

In the apparent absence of progress on the police investigation, Ms Zapatero is calling for anyone who has any information about what happened to her father to come forward.

"The point is he’s fighting for his life.

We need to know what happened.

"If somebody has done a hit and run, it’s pretty awful not to stop. We just don’t know what's happened, and we can’t tell him."

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 6:53pm on 12 February to reports of a road traffic collision on Lower Road.

“We sent an ambulance crew to the scene. We treated a person and took them to hospital."

Elephant developer trying to get affordable homes dropped

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk The developer of newly-built flats at Elephant and Castle has tried to pay Southwark Council millions of pounds to jettison its affordable homes requirement.

Developer Neobrand has offered the council £5.9 million to drop its affordable housing in the Ceramic Building on Newington Causeway, and convert the flats for sale or rent on the open market.

“While we won’t comment on individual cases which are going through a formal planning process, I will say that we place requirements for genuinely affordable homes on developers for a reason," said Cllr Helen Dennis, cabinet member for the climate emergency and sustainable development.

"We need more genuinely affordable homes in every residential development in the borough. Any attempt by a private company to avoid meeting their agreed obligations on affordable housing will be robustly challenged,” she added.

The multi-million-pound development at SE1, which was approved in 2018, contains 16 flats intended for use as affordable homes, alongside a new 140-room Travelodge, retail space and 48 residential units.

These 16 affordable homes, located on the 12th and 15th floors, were to be split between shared ownership and social rent.

Neobrand says it needs to place the flats on the open market, as it cannot find a housing association that is prepared to take them on.

Through agents TMLand, Neobrand approached 26 housings associations, but none would make an offer.

They also approached Southwark Council directly who said the opportunity "isn't for us".

Reasons cited were that the size of the opportunity was "too small" for several housing associations, the height of the 24-storey building and the service charge for social rented and shared ownership flats.

"It should be noted that since the discussions with the housing associations I understand the service

charge has risen dramatically due to the building control requirement to have a 24-hour concierge for fire safety," wrote Tom Mulligan of TMLand. "This would make the scheme even more unviable for any housing association."

He added: "TMLand does not believe that this building is suitable for either social rented or shared ownership affordable housing, and it is unlikely to be saleable to a housing association."

A decision from the council on whether the developer can proceed is due before 14 April.

One two-bedroom apartment in the Ceramic Building is currently being offered for rent at £2,795 per month.

Last year the council agreed that the communal children's play space on the top floor of the tower could be converted into an extra home for private sale.

"It is understood the placement of children's play space at this level has become unfeasible due to concerns around building regulations and fire safety compliance," wrote council planning officers.

"The applicant has proposed a payment in lieu to offset the agreed provision of children's play space, as well as for affordable housing."

Storm Eunice took down 150 trees in Southwark, says council

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Some 150 trees managed by Southwark Council were blown down across the borough in Storm Eunice, which swept across the UK on February 18 and 19.

An astonishing 29 of these were in Nunhead Cemetery, a largely woodland site to the west of Peckham Rye park.

Despite the damage, the number of trees lost was small in the wider context of the council's overall stock of 82,500 trees. Southwark has said it will replace all of the trees lost, either in the same place or nearby if that is not possible.

Southwark said its tree team worked twelve-hour days despite the red weather warning from the Met Office, clearing fallen trees from roads, taking

calls from residents and helping the emergency services.

Cllr Catherine Rose, Southwark's cabinet member for transport, parks and sport, said: “The last comparable storm was in 2013 so Eunice was a massive challenge for us, with many of team not experiencing anything quite like it before. We recognise the local impact of the loss of 150 trees, and know people can form attachments with trees near their homes, which is why we will be working to replace them as quickly as we can.

“Our trees offer a wide range of important benefits by making our roads, streets and estates nicer places. They can also help store carbon, intercept pollution and help prevent flooding as they grow, making Southwark cleaner and greener for us all.”

Rio slams ‘tongue-in-cheek’ punishments for racist abuse of players after doctorate award Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Rio Ferdinand has criticised "tongue-in-cheek, token" punishments handed down by the authorities to people found guilty of racist abuse in football.

The Peckham-born former Manchester United and England star, 43, was speaking two days after a man was given a twelve-month suspended sentence for racially abusing him online following England's loss in the Euro 2020 final last summer, although Mr Ferdinand declined to comment on this specific case.

Speaking exclusively to the News, Mr Ferdinand, who grew up on the Friary Estate just south of the Old Kent Road, said: "I don’t think the authorities are doing enough, I think it’s welldocumented that discrimination and hate, especially online, isn’t being dealt with in the right and proper way.

"The severity of the news, you see what goes on behind the scenes, you see the impact it has on people in a negative way, the authorities I think… when they are giving out, I don’t know what word to use really, but giving out tongue in cheek, it feels to me, or token gestures, it doesn’t feel quite right."

Mr Ferdinand has long criticised the British government and social media companies for not doing enough to tackle racist abuse online.

I’ve been past this building many, many times and always wondered what the hell went on in here to the abuse he suffered at Euro 2020, Mr Ferdinand said: "“I continue to find comments people say to me in football stadiums and on social media platforms deeply distressing.

“More and more on social media people are in the belief they are anonymous and there are no consequences. It is disgusting that people feel that can do this.”

Mr Ferdinand was speaking ahead of being awarded an honorary doctorate of letters by London South Bank University (LSBU) in a ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall. He was given his degree by Sir Simon Hughes, LSBU chancellor and the former MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

"We see a lot of problems in the community and the world now, and a lot

of it stems from a lack of education," he said. "It gives you a chance to climb the ladder in society... The more young people that we can get into the educational system to give them those opportunities, the better for our country.

Mr Ferdinand added that for some footballers, education can naturally seem like an afterthought amid the glitz and glamour of their profession - but that this can have a cost later.

"It’s quite difficult to juggle the two, when you’re playing football you’re very focused, and to be the best at everything you have to be really single-minded and focused.

"I understand that it’s not always easy to think about what’s going to happen next but I was always one of the ones that kept an eye on the things I wanted to do next.

"Once I got to a place I was comfortable in terms of my career, how I wanted to be, and getting myself ready for the games and training every single day, I felt comfortable then to shift a little bit of focus into maybe what’s going to happen next in my life, making sure I’ve set things up so that when I do retire I’m ready to go into work."

Mr Ferdinand spoke to the students at the graduation ceremony in an emotional speech. When he first reached the lectern to speak, he was largely silent for nearly a minute as he tried to gain control of his emotions.

Thanking the university, he said: "I never really knew... how emotional something like this could make you…

"The words graduation and Rio Ferdinand I never knew would be in the same sentence together! Firstly I think growing up in south London, in Peckham, I’ve been past this building many many times and always wondered what the hell went on in here."

Discussing his background in Southwark, Mr Ferdinand went on: "Growing up in the area I grew up in, having the parents that I have, I was very fortunate I had a lot of support, and not a lot of people are afforded that support growing up. Especially from backgrounds where a lot of people in this room and myself are from.

"We're always told that there is a dead end, that there’s a ceiling above you, and that you can’t get through it. My family very much [said] there was no boundaries. I was always one who wanted to be out of the box, I never wanted to be put in a box."

Mr Ferdinand added that the family support and his own self-belief helped him become a top footballer, and that this broadened his own horizons.

"I’d kind of never really come out of south London and then I became a footballer and then I travelled the world."

Mr Ferdinand said his Rio Ferdinand Foundation helps young people in Peckham and other areas with young people from difficult backgrounds work out what their goal is and work hard towards it.

"Football… allowed me to have a platform, to have a voice, and to use that platform for good," he said.

110-year-old Peckham youth club set to be knocked down and rebuilt in nine-storey redevelopment joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has recommended for approval plans to redevelop a youth club in Peckham, in documents published this week.

The 110-year-old Bradfield Youth Club on Commercial Way will be demolished and rebuilt, along with nine storeys of additional residential housing.

More than 30 objections to the plans were submitted by the public during the consultation period, while there were 34 responses in support of the redevelopment.

Those complaining about the plans focused upon the effect the new building would have on surrounding properties, saying that the height and scale of the new building were out of character with the area, alongside the health and well-being of locals due to extra pollution and noise.

There were also safeguarding concerns that the windows of the flats would overlook a nursery school garden, located just 35 metres away, as well as the potential negative impact on children during the construction.

Overlooking of children's play areas is not "uncommon" in built-up areas and there are other examples across Southwark and London, read the council document.

Nearly all of the positive responses to the plans came from users of the existing youth club, who welcomed the improved and expanded facilities. In defence of redeveloping the youth club's current facility, which was built in the 1950s, the council document states: "The existing building is old and dilapidated, and therefore difficult and expensive to maintain.

“The proposal would provide a substantially enhanced youth club".

A spokesperson for Guildmore and Bradfield Youth Club, added: The brand new facilities will secure the club’s future by ensuring that any charitable donations are no longer used to repair the ageing building but will instead be directed to providing much-needed services for the young people of Peckham.

Under the plans, the youth club's hall space will be located "deep into the ground/first-floor plan" and will include triple-height frontages, a clearly demarcated entrance and reception area, and windows to help "passive surveillance."

"Fear of crime" and "past issues with vehicle robbery" were cited in the council document as the reasons for this increasingly security-minded redesign of the youth club.

“The redevelopment will provide 48 flats across the ground to eight floors, alongside a child's play area on the sixth floor, which will have an "open aspect".

42% of this proposed housing would be "affordable by habitable room", of which 32 per cent will be two

and three-bedroom properties offered for social rent.

This means the redevelopment is compliant with the council's own commitment of 35 per cent affordable housing.

One of the key complaints from locals about the plans is that the expanded nine-storey building would block out daylight for the surrounding residential streets, such as Commercial Way, Pentride Street, Chandler Way and Lidgate Road, which links to Southampton Way. The council document described this impact on sunlight access for neighbours as "acceptable".

Thirty metres is the proposed height of the ninestorey building, compared to most properties in the immediate vicinity which are typically three storeys or less.

The new building's tallest nine storey part will be in the southwestern corner of the site, with a sixstorey shoulder height, reducing to three at the rear boundary to the north.

Nine properties between 32 -54 Commercial Way will see a "major" negative impact on their access to daylight, while a further two on 1-9 Pentridge Street and Lidgate Road will experience the same problem.

Locals speaking out during the planning process saw the initial plans for redevelopment changed to reduce the overall height and size of the building, including delivering more family-sized homes and increasing the amount of affordable housing.

The overall number of homes was reduced from 60 to 48 as a result of the consultation.

A number of environmental concerns are raised by the development. Eleven trees will be cleared, and it does not contain any new green spaces for the public, yet there are currently no green spaces at the site.

Inquest says it is 'likely' 13-year-old girl would have 'survived' if King’s College Hospital heeded warnings

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A 13-year-old girl who died after catching sepsis at King’s College Hospital could have survived if doctors had spotted early warning signs and sent her to intensive care earlier, a coroner’s inquest has found.

Martha Poppy Mills was transferred to King’s after sustaining an injury from falling off her bicycle, while on a family holiday in Wales last year.

She died on 31 August 2021 at the centre in Denmark Hill aged just thirteen.

An inquest at St Pancras Coroners’ Court, north London, revealed that hospital staff missed multiple opportunities to save the young girl’s life, despite her deteriorating condition.

“Whilst at King’s, Martha was not referred to the paediatric intensivists promptly,” read the coroner’s report.

“If she had been referred promptly and had been appropriately treated, the likelihood is that she would have survived her injuries.”

It added that Martha's care "fell down" between paediatric departments at the hospital and was hampered by a substandard paper-based early warning system.

Martha, who was described by her parents as “bright, healthy, and enthusiastic”, was the first-ever child to die at King’s with a pancreatic injury. Her causes of death named by the coroner were sepsis, abdominal trauma, refractory shock and pancreatic transection.

In an emotional witness statement to the coroner, Martha’s mother said that, after their daughter contracted sepsis in August last year, she and her husband raised concerns about Martha’s deteriorating health to doctors several times, yet they did not escalate her care.

Her initial symptoms included high temperature, diarrhoea and low blood

pressure. Days later Martha’s mother raised the alarm again after she began to bleed heavily through a tube inserted into her arm and later developed a high fever, low blood pressure, heightened heartbeat and rash on 29 August.

It was not until the following day that Martha was taken to intensive care.

The coroner’s report, which was published on 28 February, said that “action should be taken to prevent future deaths” and that King’s had “the power to take such action.” They raised concerns that there was a risk of “future deaths” unless action was taken by the hospital.

Actions proposed by the coroner to

avoid similar tragedies were that King’s replaced their paper-based bedside paediatric early warning score with electronic recording, and that there should be greater cooperation between paediatric intensive care and other departments in the hospital.

The coroner’s investigation into Martha’s death began on September 2021 and finished last month (February). The final report was sent to Martha’s parents and the Care Quality Commission England, a watchdog organisation monitoring healthcare facilities across the country.

Professor Nicola Ranger, chief nurse at King’s, said: “We would like to extend our deepest sympathies once again to Martha’s family for their loss.

"We accept the Coroner’s findings, and on behalf of the Trust, I would like to apologise for the failure to recognise Martha’s deteriorating condition earlier, which led to delays in providing appropriate treatment.

We are committed to delivering further improvements to the care we provide to patients at King's."

King’s has been given until 25 April 2022 to respond to the coroner’s findings. Their response must outline what actions they are going to take, have taken and offer a proposed timeline.

Man charged with murder of Jamie Gilbey

Dejour Jones, 24 (05.05.97), of no fixed address was charged on Friday, March 4. He appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Monday (March 7).

At about 1:45pm on Sunday, police officers found suspicious items near Love Lane in South Norwood, These have been sent for further analysis.

Specialist officers are continuing to carry out searches of South Norwood Lakes in Croydon.

Police are asking for anyone who may have been fishing or using the path around the lake to call police if they think they saw anything suspicious. They also want to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity on roads near the lake: Auckland Road, Sylvan Road and Woodvale Avenue.

Police still urging witnesses to come forward after teenager raped in Park

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Detectives investigating last month's horrific rape in Burgess Park are calling for witnesses to help with their investigation.

The incident took place late in the evening on Tuesday, February 22, at around 10:30 p.m.

Police were called at 10:34 p.m. on the Tuesday after the victim, who is in her late teens, reported the attack.

A witness, who discovered the girl

shortly after the attack, told the News that the victim suffered a facial injury.

A police spokesperson later confirmed these details.

The victim was taken to hospital and officers temporarily sealed off the small car park off Wells Way, near the underpass, and a second larger area near the football pitch for the two days.

No arrests have been made at this stage.

The investigation is being led by the Central South area's Public Protection team and they have carried out a number of enquiries including reviewing CCTV, conducting forensic examinations and

tests, and patrolling the area.

Detectives are encouraging witnesses of the attack or anyone with any information to come forward to help with their investigation.

"Tackling violence, including sexual violence, remains our top operational priority. We are absolutely committed to doing everything we can to keep women and girls safe, and to feel safe," said a spokesperson for the Met. "While we fully recognise both concern and fear about violence aimed at women and girls, it is also important to stress that London remains one of the safest cities in

the world.

Two men had to be rescued from a flat on fire in Kennington after it is believed cooking was left unattended.

Three fire engines and around fifteen firefighters were called to the incident last Tuesday (March 1).

Crews wearing breathing apparatus rescued two men from a first floor flat in Kennings Way. They were assessed on scene by ambulance crews.

The flat was partially damaged by fire. Firefighters believe the fire was caused by cooking left unattended.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Never leave cooking unattended on the cooker or hob. You should have working smoke alarms in every room where a fire can start, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen and the bathroom. They should be tested regularly.”

The Brigade was called at 9.07pm and the fire was under control by 9.30pm. Fire crews from Lambeth, Dowgate and Brixton stations attended the incident.

The operating hours have reduced The central London Congestion Charge now operates Monday-Friday 7am-6pm, weekends and bank holidays noon-6pm. The daily charge is £15.

This will help reduce congestion during the day, and support the night time economy.

Disabled man denied dream move by council Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The family of a disabled Bermondsey man, who is living in an unsuitable home that is in a state of disrepair, have demanded an inquiry into why he was denied the chance to move into a new accessible flat that would have let him stay close to his support network.

Patrick Scahill, 51, has cerebral palsy, among several other serious medical conditions, and has lived on the Lynton Estate for more than twenty years. A popular man in the local area, he is often seen in the Queen Victoria pub on Southwark Park Road with his sister and mother, who look after him, make him food and wash him and keep him company every day.

Mr Scahill's conditions have got worse in recent years, meaning he increasingly needs to use a wheelchair to get around.

But the doorways of his flat are too narrow for his wheelchair.

Meanwhile the general condition of the flat is poor. The property was flooded by two burst pipes, one in 2016. While the council has carried out some repairs in the intervening years, a visit to the property reveals the work to be shoddy, with damp and mould still climbing the walls. The floor in the hall has buckled, making it uneven and unsafe for Mr Scahill to walk on.

Using the toilet independently has also become a real struggle, often with undignified consequences for Mr Scahill. Neither can he cook for himself, because the kitchen is not accessible and it would be dangerous.

Incidents like these made it clear that Mr Scahill needed to be moved. But he also needs to be near his family - who are his vital support network. Ms Scahill paid hundreds of pounds for a private occupational therapist - bypassing the council's months-long waiting list - who confirmed that he needed a wheelchair accessible property near his sister

It’s possible that there is someone more in need than Patrick... but we’ve lived here for a long time and we know all the disabled people in the area and mother, who fosters children for Southwark Council.

When the new council homes on nearby Welsford Street were built and became

available earlier this year, Ms Scahill applied for the development's accessible house for her brother. The occupational therapist said the plans of the Welsford Street property made it seem suitable for Mr Scahill. The house has a 'catchment area' - meaning that a local person should get priority to live in it.

Ms Scahill said that her brother should have been given five out of six priority stars, in line with the occupational therapist's recommendations, which she believes would have made him a shoo-in for the Welsford Street property.

Instead Mr Scahill was unsuccessful, and may have to move to Walworth or Peckham, miles from his family. He was

distraught when he found out, Ms Scahill said. "I always cook for him and he told me when he moved I could come round and he would make me beans on toast," she said, speaking from Mr Scahill's living room as he watched football on television.

Ms Scahill said she was told that her brother was the thirteenth most qualified applicant for the property, which she found hard to believe.

"It's possible that there is someone more in need than Patrick for [the Welsford Street property]," she said. "But we've lived here for a long time and we know all the disabled people in the area...

"We want transparency, we want an independent inquiry into how this decision was made. If it turns out that someone else does need it more then fair enough, but we need to know."

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “I do understand that it is frustrating to lose out on a bid for a new home, but with such a high demand, and low supply of, adapted street properties it can take time for a bid to be successful – the fair process means that the properties are offered to the family or person in highest need, and this is made publicly available.

"However, we’re always open to a review of our decisions. The family has already issued a complaint and this will go through the council’s formal complaints process to confirm the council’s decision making process. If the family is unsatisfied with the response, they can escalate their complaint to the Local Government Ombudsman.”

Rotherhithe and Bermondsey lit up again for just one night

The Illuminate Rotherhithe and Bermondsey procession was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but came back this year.

The aim of the lantern processions, which this year went from Mayflower Hall on Neptune Street and St James' Church on Jamaica Road before

coming together in Southwark Park, is to celebrate migration. Between 800 and 1,000 people came to this year's festival, according to organiser Annabel Stockman.

Organisers said on the festival's website: "The more we mix, the more we feel part of the community, and the aim of the festival is to encourage our communities to be involved, to participate, to collaborate and to mix."

There was a series of free lanternmaking workshops across the area in the run-up to the festival, run by local artists.

Rent hike for family struggling with over £100,000 in fire safety bills Exclusive

Herbie Russell news@southwarknews.co.uk A mother-of-four has had her rent increased by £600 a year, just months after being struck by an £85,000 bill for fire safety repair costs.

In October, primary school teacher Emma McGovern, leaseholder at Oyster Court, Walworth, told the News of her dismay at being lumped with the costs of post-Grenfell fire safety improvements.

Now, housing association landlord Opitvo are demanding that she and her family cough up an extra £600 a year. She said: “All of us were really shocked that they’ve put an increase on our rent given how much stress we’ve been through with the cladding.”

In October 2021, we reported that Emma had been been given what she described as a “comedy bill” of £85,000.

In November, already reeling from the shock of that staggering financial blow, she was told to pay an additional £56,000.

When the government announced in January that housing developers should pay for cladding removal costs, Emma described it as a “step in the right direction”.

But two months later, their block remains coated in dangerous cladding and there’s been no indication from Optivo that they intend to pay for its removal.

Now, with this rent hike, Optivo’s squeeze continues, prolonging the nightmare for Oyster Court residents.

Emma also noted that she’d been charged £28.19 per month for ‘communal

fire prevention’ and says it's unclear where this charge has come from.

In October, a spokesperson from activist group End Our Cladding Scandal said: “We challenge the Prime Minister to spend even a week forced to live in a home that has been retrospectively deemed unsafe.

“To receive a bill many multiples of his annual salary to fix serious defects that he played no part in causing.

“Then tell us how it feels to be worried day and night for his family.”

In total, Oyster Court’s bill stands at £2.6 million, which includes cost for the removal of cladding, balcony decking, cavity barriers and adding fire stopping at window abutments.

A spokesperson for Optivo commented: “Our priority is to support our residents and we’d encourage anybody who is worried about their finances to speak to our dedicated teams who are there to help.

“We annually review the rent of our shared owners in line with their lease.

We’ve capped the increase the lease allows this year as we’re aware of the impact of cost of living rises.

“Our residents at Oyster Court have not been asked to pay for fire remediation works to their building façade. We wrote to leaseholders last year and explained the costs of the proposed works as this is a legal requirement.

“We’ve been clear we’ve not billed residents for this work. Since this letter was sent, the Government has introduced new fire safety guidance. We’ll be reassessing Oyster Court against this new fire safety guidance and imminent legislation. Our approach to fire safety will remain proportionate and we’ll only carry

out works where they’re required.

"Optivo has been working hard to protect our leaseholders by pursuing developers and other third parties for costs. We welcome the recent announcements from government to help us achieve positive outcomes for these efforts along with their other measures to protect leaseholders from costs.”

27 refugee nurses join the Maudsley from Middle East

This is part of an NHS programme to use people who are qualified nurses in their home country as nurses in the NHS. Some 27 nurses joined the health service through this programme in January after arriving from Jordan and Lebanon.

Vanessa Smith, chief nurse at the south London and Maudsley NHS trust,

said: “We are delighted and honoured to be part of this programme and to welcome our new colleagues to the trust.

“Our new recruits bring with them a huge wealth of experience and skill which we know will benefit people who use our services, their families and carers.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A top King's College Hospital surgeon has said he would "never use an e-scooter" amid a sharp rise in injuries since they came onto London's streets a few years ago.

Ash Vasireddy, a consultant orthopaedic trauma surgeon at the Denmark Hill hospital, said injuries from people coming off e-scooters were "a really big issue".

Mr Vasireddy said: "Obviously e-scooters are much more prevalent now.

The issue is [people] are travelling at a decent speed with minimal protection.

When they come off they tend to land awkwardly and they do tend to have very severe injuries, some of which can be life-changing or life-threatening. Some can be life-changing injuries that mean people can’t walk normally.

"I would never use an e-scooter. I’m always tempted, but I’m too worried about other road users. It’s definitely a problem." Mr Vasireddy added that he also would not ride a bike on London's streets.

Some 196 patients came into King's emergency department with injuries suffered during an e-scooter collision in 2020, a December 2021 report by transport safety charity Pacts found.

Raju Ahluwalia, another orthopaedic surgeon at the hospital, said the increase in injuries was a "concern".

E-scooters, which first became popular in London last year, are mostly illegal to ride on public roads in the UK, although Southwark is among several London boroughs taking part in a trial scheme.

The scheme lets people ride scooters that they have hired from Transport for London (TfL) on roads in the borough.

Mr Vasireddy was speaking after featuring on a Channel 4 documentary about London's network of hospitals that treat people with severe traumatic injuries. King's is part of the network and its helipad allows London's air ambulance to take seriously injured people to the hospital quicker, saving lives.

One review of the series described

it as "excruciating, sobering and often graphic". If just watching the show is excruciating, how difficult must it be for surgeons like Mr Vasireddy?

"Since I've been working as an air ambulance doctor, I can pretty much remember all of the patients by face there's probably a couple of hundred now," he said. "Many a time I think about it in the evening, it does make it difficult to get to sleep sometimes. You do kind of wake up in the middle of the night sometimes."

Mr Vasireddy said he was now better at "parking" these thoughts before he gets home. "You struggle more at the start of the career, because you know a lot of it could just be anyone." Discussing the horrible injuries he treats with colleagues also helps, he said. "It's good to decompress with them, it's good to discuss and share with them."

He recalled spending "an entire clinic three or four hours - with one guy who had devastating injuries to his leg. He wasn’t able to work, lost his house, didn’t know where he and his family were going to live. I think about things like that on my drive home from work."

Mr Vasireddy said his work had changed his approach to life and he was now more cautious.

“The key thing for me is that could be any one of us on another day. Someone who made a slightly wrong decision about when to cross a road, whether the volume was a bit too loud on your airpods. It could be any one of us...

"I’ve seen many people drive too fast past me on the motorway, and I’ve treated many patients who’ve driven normally but been hit by people driving too fast. That’s suddenly changed their life even through they had nothing to do with it."

Despite the difficulties and challenges of his extraordinary job - which was made even more complicated by the pandemic - Mr Vasireddy said it was "a privilege".

"The reason I like trauma is it’s a great opportunity to treat patients at their most vulnerable stage."

Peckham Rye Station is poised for multi-million pound revamp

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A major plan to upgrade Peckham Rye Station has been submitted to Southwark council by Network Rail, following years of consultation.

If approved, the multi-million pound scheme will create better facilities for passengers and improve the capacity of the station, which dates back to 1865.

Several significant changes to the train station are proposed in a planning document which was submitted by Network Rail this week.

The main entrance of the station will be restored, a new rear entrance will be created, plus there will be more ground floor space.

There will also be wider platforms, larger gate lines, as well improved integration with surrounding public spaces.

These upgrades will increase the number of passengers that the station can handle in the future, alongside allowing more trains to stop in Peckham.

Network Rail has not yet put a precise figure on the overall cost of the project, as much depends on the result of the planning application and assurance reviews. Yet it is expected to be in the tens of millions.

A decision from the council on whether the plans can go ahead is expected around May 2022 and, depending on any proposed changes, construction would start in September 2023 and could finish late summer 2025.

The long duration of the works is due to the need to keep the station open while the building work is happening.

A new set of stairs and walkways will replace the narrow tunnels, which are currently used by passengers to get between the platforms, and new lifts will be added to give step free access to the platforms.

Peckham Rye is currently the busiest interchange station in the country without step free access to platforms or accessible facilities for passengers.

Network Rail have said the upgrade is also necessary for the station to cope with the projected increase in demand by 2040.

Adding a new west-facing entrance will increase the number of ticket barriers at the station by three, while the old front entrance will be expanded to 7 barriers plus 2 wide gates to handle the larger footfall.

To assist in dealing with congestion on

the platforms, Network Rail plans to declutter the existing platforms to increase space for passengers.

Scaffolding is currently being erected on the front of the station to give the original Victorian-era facade a clean.

This is to prepare for the demolition of the neighbouring shopping arcade as part of the council's Station Square redevelopment, as it will make the station’s front more visible.

"Peckham Rye station is a beautiful building in a fantastic location and should be a jewel in the crown of south London’s railway," said Network Rail development manager Andrew Wood.

"Sadly various developments have hidden that jewel from view and in addition the station is no longer big enough for the number of people who use it.

"Our aim for this development is to make the station shine again," he added.

The £94 million project has had more than £37 million of Southwark Council funding, and is due to get another £25 million, but its future has been unclear since TfL ran into major money troubles during the pandemic. The News reported last year on comments by TfL bosses that the station upgrade was "undeliverable" as things stood.

TfL is paying for the tunnels between the Northern and Bakerloo lines, while developers Delancey are paying for the station box.

The transport agency and developers Delancey have agreed to split the payments into two parts to make the funding process easier.

This will means a change to an agreement between Southwark, the developers and TfL. The upgrades to the station were due to form part of the Bakerloo line extension, which would have seen two new tube stations added to the Old Kent Road. Southwark Council said last year that the extension was “fundamental to plans for growth and development in the borough”.

Labour’s Cllr Johnson Situ added at the time that the upgrade to the station would “help support the case for the overall Bakerloo Line Extension project, strengthening TfL’s case for capital funding.”

But the extension to the Bakerloo Line has been shelved indefinitely, due to TfL’s financial struggles after the pandemic. Earlier this year a TfL board member said the work was unlikely to happen in her lifetime.

Camberwell Saturday Market has been relaunched

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk The much-loved Camberwell Farmers’ Market will return to Camberwell Green this weekend, it has been announced.

An array of stalls touting street food, arts and crafts and health and beauty will be at the market, which is due to take place on Saturday, March 5.

This weekend's event will be themed "re-discover Camberwell" to celebrate the relaunch of the market and encourage people back to their high streets.

"The Camberwell Farmers’ Market has been serving Camberwellians for over twelve years with locally produced bread, meat, fruit and veg," said market director Annette Cauneen.

"Our loyal customer base have been asking us for more, which is why I am delighted that with the support of Camberwell Life we are relaunching Camberwell Market from this Saturday," she added.

Among the many traders at Saturday's market will be the Celtic Bakers, selling organic artisan pastries and cakes, fruit and veg sellers Marsh Produce and Tapas Bravas with its Spanish fare.

There will also be fresh flowers, candles, vegan pastries and a range of street food items on offer.

The market will run every Saturday and they plan a Camberwell Saturday event on the first Saturday of the month with a revolving theme.

A celebration of second-hand clothing, vinyl and trinkets is planned for April, alongside a car boot sale, while in May foods from around the world will be showcased - where there will be "everything from fish and chips to Ethiopian", say the event organisers.

June will see the theme "Camberwell Jubilation" in aid of the Queen's Jubilee.

The relaunch is being billed by Camberwell Life as an opportunity for Camberwell residents and others to rediscover the high street and support small, local businesses.

They have said they want to "encourage local residents and visitors to eat, drink and discover the incredible independent shops, cafes and restaurants in SE5.

"New businesses are popping up all the time and there are many great existing businesses - many of whom have had to diversify during the pandemic and are now changing what they offer to residents,” says Jordana Leighton of Camberwell Life.

“For the last few months we have been reaching out to all businesses in SE5 to become Camberwell Champions and feel more involved in planning the future of the Camberwell high street," she added.

Local students get creative to beat breast cancer

Students at the London College of Communication (LCC) have teamed up with the NHS to create a series of films aimed at improving breast cancer awareness.

The four animations made by the Elephant & Castle based uni aim to encourage women across Southwark to check their breasts and regularly attend their screening appointments.

They highlight the importance of breast awareness and screening as the best way of saving lives through aiding early detection and treatment.

The films, which draw on the testimony of black women who have recovered from breast cancer, are aimed at ethnic minorities, who are particularly vulnerable to the disease.

"We hope these fantastic films will help to amplify and communicate

this sensitive message in a universal language for an ethnically diverse borough like Southwark,” said Dr Nicola Weaver at Macmillan Cancer Support.

A 2021 review in south east London found that areas with a higher amount of people from non-white British backgrounds are less likely to use breast screening services on offer.

Nation-wide studies have also shown that, since uptake amongst black, Asian and ethnic minority communities is lower, these groups have poorer survival rates as the cancer is detected in its advanced - and more deadly stages.

The students, who were from the Moving Image and Digital Arts programme at the LCC, supported the project as part of their academic studies.

Fighting rare condition affecting kids Staff at Evelina London children’s hospital are raising awareness of a rare condition that children can get after catching Covid-19.

Paediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (PIMS-TS) is a rare condition in children and young people that is thought to be triggered

by COVID-19. The condition is most easily treated if caught early.

A five-year-old girl called Evelyn was rushed to Evelina London near Waterloo with PIMS-TS last autumn.

Her Mum Eugenia, 42, said: “Evelyn caught COVID-19 towards the end of September, but luckily she wasn’t too ill, she just had a temperature overnight. It wasn’t until several weeks later when she developed new symptoms that got worse over four or five days that I thought this might be quite serious.”

“My husband took her to our local A&E thinking she might have meningitis as she was complaining of sore tummy, a sensitive head and eyes and she had a very high temperature that wasn’t coming down. Over the following days she began vomiting and had diarrhoea and was feeling itchy with a rash on her hands and feet. We later noticed she had bloodshot eyes too. She was taken by the South Thames Retrieval Service to Evelina London and diagnosed with PIMS-TS”.

She was looked after in the paediatric intensive care unit at Evelina London for three days before going back home to finish recovering.

Eugenia said: “By the time we got to Evelina London, Evelyn had an enlarged heart, inflammation in one of her main veins and had developed a rash across her body. It was really

scary to see how unwell she had become so quickly.

“Watching Evelyn become so ill and not knowing the reason why was so scary. When we got the diagnosis of PIMS it was a relief but it bought with it its own worries and fears due to the fact that it can potentially be a very serious condition."

Evelyn has since made a full recovery from PIMS-TS. The ten-year-old daughter of Southwark's Cllr Jasmine Ali was hospitalised with the symptoms of the post-Covid condition Paediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome (PIMS) before Christmas, although a diagnosis was inconclusive.

She was in the high-dependency unit at King’s College Hospital, an experience that Cllr Ali called “terrifying”, although her daughter had “fantastic” care and is much better now.

Evelina London was among the first in the world to report PIMS-TS as a new condition in April 2020, helping other countries to also successfully treat it. Since the condition was discovered, Evelina London has treated almost 300 patients from across London and south east England.

Dr Jenny Handforth, consultant in paediatric infectious diseases at Evelina London, added: “While children and young people typically get mild symptoms with COVID-19, those who get PIMS-TS usually require hospital treatment as it is a serious condition. The patients we’ve cared for with PIMS-TS have responded very well to hospital treatment, and we continue to monitor them after discharge with regular check-ups.

“So while this illness is rare, it’s something we need families to be aware of so they know what to look out for and when to contact a health professional if they are worried about their child.”

Symptoms of PIMS-TS can include:

• A prolonged fever (higher than 38C) • Tummy ache • Diarrhoea and / or vomiting • Widespread red rash • Red bloodshot eyes, strawberry red tongue, or red cracked lips • Swelling of fingers and toes • Not feeling or acting like themselves.

Their work will be shared widely across Southwark and south east London in an effort to maximise reach and impact, as well as support International Woman's Day on 8 March.

The titles of the four short films are "Speak Up", "Say No To Cancer", "Together" and "It's In Your Hands".

Gill Henderson of the LCC said the university had partnered up with local healthcare organisations to "find innovative ways" of encouraging ethnic minority women in Southwark "to be more aware of the condition, demystify and destigmatise breast cancer [and] be confident to talk about it". "[LCC] has long been a part of the Southwark community, contributing to the borough through our creative education programmes and has strong links with schools and organisations in

the area,” she added.

Dr Weaver pointed out that everyone should be aware of breast cancer and be on the lookout for the disease.

"It is important to remember that breast screening is for healthy people with no symptoms," she says.

"Screening can help to find breast cancers early when they are too small to see or feel.

"The screening programme currently starts at age 50, but if women of any age find a change in their breasts, we would encourage them to contact their GP for advice,” she continued.

In the UK, one in seven women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lifetime.

There is a good chance of recovery if it is detected at an early stage, according to the NHS.

Walworth bus worker gets pandemic schedule award A Walworth man who changed bus schedules in the pandemic to meet the needs to help Londoners get from A to B safely has been given a top industry award.

Mariusz Przybylski and his team had to come up with new schedules for 2,500 drivers in two weeks when Covid-19 first hit. In total over 200 schedule changes were made in eighteen months.

He was given the Joe Wood Scheduler of the Year Award at a ceremony in Ireland

Mariusz said: “It’s a huge honour to win this accolade. I want to dedicate this success to my Abellio London team, who showed colossal flexibility and resilience. They worked very hard during the pandemic to help keep our buses and customers moving. I'm hoping this award will help ensure the important role that schedulers play in the bus industry is recognised.”

The award was named after a widely respected young bus manager who died in 2019. Joe's father Gary Wood presented Mariusz with his award.

KIRBY ESTATE COMES OUT IN SUPPORT OF UKRAINE

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Serious questions have been raised after authorities missed numerous opportunities to help a woman who lay dead in her Nunhead home for months.

The body of 61-year-old Sheila Seleoane was discovered on 18 February in Lord's Court, after Storm Eunice left her balcony door swinging open and shut. Her body is thought to have lain undetected for many months.

In documents seen by the News, both Peabody housing association and the police attended the property several times in the months leading up to her discovery.

The earliest date Peabody allegedly recorded on their system where a neighbourhood raised concerns about Sheila was in June 2020.

It is noted that a neighbour reported a concern to Peabody saying they hadn't seen or heard from the resident since April 2020 and letters were wedged in and around the door.

In April 2020, a Peabody engineer was sent to carry out a gas safety check at the property "but was not able to gain access".

Throughout July, August and September it has been reported that Peabody tried to contact Sheila many times via calling and leaving voicemail messages - to no avail.

A strong smell coming from Sheila's flat was reported by a neighbour on 19 October 2020. One day later the documents claim that a neighbourhood manager at Peabody tried to reach the

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey estate described as "England's most patriotic" has raised a Ukrainian flag in solidarity, after the country's invasion by the Russian army.

Residents of the Kirby Estate, on the corner of Southwark Park Road and Jamaica Road, put up the flag over the weekend - and removed some smaller Russian flags from their collection of bunting.

Chris Dowse, who lives on the estate, said: "There’s not much we can physically do and so we’re showing our support any way we can."

There are no Ukrainians or Russians living on the estate, as far as Mr Dowse is aware.

The Kirby Estate is famous for putting up huge numbers of St George's Cross flags to show support for the England national football team at international tournaments.

Last summer's display for Euro 2020 was the biggest yet with nearly 400 flags. The residents first covered the estate in St George’s Cross flags for Euro 2012, and the display hit the national news at World Cup 2018.

resident by knocking on the door, which was unanswered.

MP for Peckham and Camberwell Harriet Harman said "internal failings" within the housing association were to blame for the body's late discovery. She cited questions surrounding whether or not the gas was turned off. Plus it has been reported that the tenant had thousands of pounds worth of unpaid rent.

Peabody's records list August 2019 as the last active transaction where Sheila paid off her rent until April 2020.

"It really should not have taken them this long," says Harman.

In a statement, Peabody chief executive, Ian McDermott said: "Clearly looking back the red flags were there.

It should have been obvious to us that Sheila had either abandoned the property or something was very wrong."

"Even with the challenges of lockdowns, we should have done better.

I don’t think it was because we didn’t care."

Harman also believed it was "hard to reconcile" what the police and Peabody had said about Sheila's death, and that "it could not be the case that she was safe and well."

Police attended Sheila's house for a welfare visit on two occasions in October 2020 after they were contacted by a local resident and the housing association.

"It was not deemed by the officers that there were sufficient grounds to enter the premises," said a spokesperson from the Met. They added: "The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards have looked at the officers’ actions and not found any reason to launch an investigation."

Peabody's McDermott said: "After we were told by the police that everything was fine, we didn’t assume the worst."

A spokesperson for the housing association added that they had

made "repeated attempts to contact Ms Seleoane", and they "do not have the legal powers to forcibly enter a property."

"We rely on the police to do this," they added.

In December 2021, a neighbour reported that Sheila's balcony door was banging open in the wind. In the months running up to December, a Peabody neighbourhood manager had allegedly attended the block to carry out estate inspections. Nothing unusual was noted.

Harman blamed Peabody's poor communication, saying it "just didn't listen to tenants", who complained about a horrible stench coming from the flat repeatedly for months.

She claimed that Peabody did "not communicate with tenants" when the body was recovered from the flat, and sent round an email afterwards, instead of reassuring tenants with letters or door to door visits.

Peabody has apologised to residents and commissioned an independent, external investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sheila's death.

Harman added: "Peabody has got to learn lessons, it’s a cliché, but this is a real wake up call."

"Something or a number of things have gone wrong," said McDermott. "We know that’s not good enough and we need to learn from this."

"Until we’ve completed the investigation we don’t have the answers," he added.

Harman believed that the events surrounding Sheila's death are "telling a much bigger story".

"It is important that social housing works well ... Having good systems these things matter irrespective of the awfulness of the death, they should matter to all tenants," she said.

‘I have never been so proud of my people’ says student

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A Ukrainian student at London South Bank University has said she is "incredibly anxious" for her loved ones inside Ukraine, especially those who stayed behind to fight.

"Lots of my friends have the possibility to leave, but they stay to protect their country, it breaks my heart," said 24-year-old Kateryna Chiiachenko, a second-year PhD student.

"Every morning I wake up worrying if they are alive or not, I am not fine until I hear their voice," she added.

Kateryna, who is originally from Muckevo in the west of Ukraine, has an uncle and cousin who have joined the armed struggle against the Russians.

"We keep asking them to leave the country, but they are just saying no," says Kateryna.

"They want to protect Ukraine ...

They want to stay until the last."

Kateryna was "incredibly anxious" for all of her extended family in Ukraine, particularly its more vulnerable members.

"We are really worried. My grandpa can hear shooting from his house, he is really old and it is difficult to transport him," she said. "He does not have the medicines he needs, there is no food and the shops have run out of essential items."

"There is a chance that the city will close and they will not be able to leave at all."

Although she could understand the potential "financial" concerns facing the UK of offering safety to Ukrainian refugees, Kateryna said she could "only think about my Ukrainian people."

She added: "Colouring the London Eye with the Ukrainian flag is a great thing, but I would like to see something real."

The Conservative government has granted visas to 300 Ukrainian

refugees out of nearly 18,000 applications. There are reports of Ukrainians being turned away at UK borders due to a lack of paperwork.

Kateryna described the news coming out of Ukraine as "heartbreaking."

"We are hearing terrible stories about people having to spend nights underground and children dying of dehydration."

"Our family is relatively lucky as we know our relatives are still alive.

My mother's friends live in Mariupol, things are really bad there, people are dying ... no-one knows whether they are alive or not."

Russia has surrounded and besieged the city in the south, with an estimated 200,000 people currently trapped under heavy bombardment.

Along with her fellow ex-pats in the UK, Kateryna has tried to support Ukraine "in any way" she can, including sending parcels, donations and money to the country. But she wanted to see more political and financial assistance from the UK government.

"For Ukrainian people, it is really important to see that they are supported from abroad," says Kateryna. "I have been surprised by the kindness of people I know, who have offered to help."

"It makes a really big difference."

In the face of Russia's military assault, Kateryna said that she had "never been so proud of my people as I am now."

"I could never have imagined that the people of my country would show this much dedication to their families, friends and motherland."

Although "no expert" in politics, Kateryna believed Ukraine was "very much capable" of fighting Russia off.

"Even though we are such a small country, our people know what they are fighting for."

"Ukrainian people seek freedom over anything else and they ready to do anything for it, she added.

outhwark is the centre of my universe but, as ever, things that happen here in our community have global relevance and events around the world resonate in our part of London.

This is true of the war in Ukraine which has affected so many local people.

Just six weeks ago, I visited Ukraine with the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, including the border of the territory at that point already illegally occupied by Russia in the Donetsk region. Whilst there, I heard directly from elected representatives including the Deputy Prime Minister, frontline armed forces, and other community representatives about their resolve, feelings of betrayal that Putin had not been punished for his invasion of Crimea eight years ago and their need for more help.

The view from Ukrainians was crystal clear: war was not ‘imminent’ but underway already.

The Donetsk region was shelled over 100 times in December 2021 and three Ukrainian soldiers were killed by snipers before my feet touched Ukrainian soil. That some of the

soldiers and civilians I met just weeks ago may now be dead or have fled is horrifying.

When I returned, I urged the Prime Minister in the Commons to implement the recommendations of several reports into dodgy Russian activity in the UK, including from the security services.

Instead, Johnson dithered, deferred, and delayed. His Government and the Conservatives have been tainted by Russian money for years; funds stolen from the Russian people

by Putin’s allies, oligarchs and cronies.

It was six years ago that David Cameron promised a register of foreign owned London properties, but the Tories have failed to deliver even that basic policy.

Not only does this lack of action completely undermines the UK’s position in taking a strong stance against Russia it also leaves Londoners with higher costs and more pressure on housing.

Johnson, as ever, resorts to hyperbole about having the “toughest package of sanctions against Putin's regime". Boris Johnson poses in cockpits but his lack of sanctions are the pits action against the Russian dictator.

Johnson poses in cockpits, but his sanctions are the pits by comparison to the United States which has put in place 1,200 sanctions and even Italy has been confiscating Russian-owned yachts and homes.

Johnson is simply repeating his ‘worldclass’ boasts about tackling covid when the reality was he was partying in Downing Street whilst the UK suffered the highest death toll in Europe and worst damage to any major economy on the planet during the pandemic.

By contrast, it has once again been amazing to see the outpouring of solidarity from our local community for Ukraine: from the Kirby Estate raising a Ukrainian flag; to the Odessa Street gathering; to Southwark’s Labour Council asking the Government to do more to help those fleeing war and terror on our European doorstep.

I am in touch with Ukrainian and other local people to assist their families and will continue to do so as long as I serve this amazing community that has such global importance and interconnectivity!

I’d say you got a valid case to defend. But with small businesses, they don’t fight because of the cost to do so. If you fight back, I’d advise that you take screen shots of Pret’s website – about, drinks menu.

Nowhere in the site does it include “A Manger” except for the legal copyright at the bottom. They refer to themselves as just ‘Pret’, which just means ‘Fast/Ready’. It’s also because they want to move away from being branded as “fast food” which is what it means. Yours is a different meaning altogether, meaning Bread To Eat. Good luck.

Got to be honest, for the sake of only 2 weeks and no permanent damage to the park I think it is a good thing. A lot of people seem to be into K-pop nowadays and it gives them something positive to do with their time in the holidays. Also, surely it helps the local shops in the surrounding areas with the increase in business from 15,000 attendees? Can understand why some are not happy but you can't please them all as they say.

It is scandalous that more was not done to check on Nunhead woman found dead in her home

T

he shocking discovery of 61-year-old Sheila Seleoane’s body in Nunhead throws open so many questions on how we better care and watch out for our neighbours - but most importantly how those in authority act upon our concerns.

For those living near to Sheila the realisation that this poor woman could have lain dead for years must have been upsetting – each one of them wondering whether they could have done more. But in documents seen by this paper it is clear that they did contact the housing association Peabody, who in return contacted the police, yet she was still left for what could have been over a year.

An investigation continues to determine the chain of events, but from what we know little appears to have been done between police welfare visits in October 2020 and the discovery of her body on February 18 this year.

Local MP Harriet Harman has weighed in saying Peabody does not listen to tenants and she would appear right in this case, as residents are reported to have made 40 to 50 complaints about the ‘horrendous smell’ emerging from the dwelling.

In fact it had to take an almighty storm like Eunice to see any real action. Peabody say they have not got the ‘legal powers to forcibly enter a property’ and the Met said it was ‘not deemed by the officers that there were sufficient grounds to enter the premises.’ Letters were sent, but what good are they if a person is either dead or incapacitated?

We can only hope this poor woman, who was still relatively young, did not suffer too much. The systems in place to both safeguard and respond to residents’ concerns failed in an appalling way and so Peabody and other authorities should be looking and making immediate changes to their system, to ensure that this never happens again.

Nurse to run half marathon in memory of beloved colleague - who died last summer in road accident

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A children's nurse ran her first half marathon last Sunday (March 6) in memory of a colleague who died in a traffic collision while cycling to work last year.

Prabalini Thaventhiran, an allergy nurse at Evelina London Children's Hospital near Waterloo, ran the Paris

Half Marathon in honour of her friend and former co-worker, Dr Marta Krawiec, who died in August 2021.

Prabalini, who has worked at Evelina London since 2015, said: “Marta loved travelling and exploring cities. When I saw the Paris Half Marathon I thought it was the perfect place to run for her.

It’s known as the city of love and she was such a close friend and colleague to so many of us, it felt so apt to go

there in her memory.”

Marta, who also worked with children with allergies, was a keen runner and Prabalini thought a run was the best way to pay tribute to her.

Prabalini said: “I used to call Marta the walking library because she was so knowledgeable. She was the sort of person that if you had a question, not only will she have the answer, but she’d give you the background and let you know how you can learn more. I learnt so much from her.

“Marta was also so interested in other people and their hobbies. When I started running for the first time in the first COVID-19 lockdown, she was so supportive. I know she’d have been behind me running my first half marathon.”

Running for Marta is not just important for Prabalini and her colleagues, but also for the patients Marta cared for, as Prabalini is raising money for Evelina London's allergy service.

Prabalini said: “After she passed away, many of the families of the children Marta treated asked if there’s anything they could do... Donating to my run is a way for others to honour Marta’s work.”

Marta's death in a road traffic collision in Holborn has been felt keenly by her former colleagues. Prabalini said she wanted to run in her honour to highlight the legacy she has left.

The 29-year-old said: “Through doing this run I want to let Marta’s family and friends know that although it’s been a few months now since she passed away, Marta hasn’t left our team. She’s very much in our hearts and central to so much of the work we do. We all miss Marta but we want to celebrate her life and the legacy she has left behind.

The deal with AustralianSuper, which gives the overall 53-acre project a value of £580 million, should speed up the building works, British Land said. The first phase of building, funded by £201 million from both companies, is due to finish between July and September of 2024.

AustralianSuper is one of the country's largest pension funds, with £140 billion in assets under management. The fund already has £7 billion invested in the UK, with stakes in Heathrow, the King's Cross redevelopment and Peel Ports on the Medway river in Kent.

British Land and AustralianSuper will form a joint venture that will pay out fees to British Land for carrying out the building work, according to the terms of the deal.

AustralianSuper's head of international investments said last month that it planned to invest a further £12 billion in the UK over the next five years, including in "highquality sustainable mixed-use real estate investments".

Damian Moloney told the Financial Times that the UK was an “obvious choice” for investment, given its "deep pools of talent", favourable legal and regulatory environment, "like-minded partners" and "strong cultural fit".

The Canada Water masterplan was given outline planning permission

by Southwark Council in May 2020 - a decision that was subjected to an unsuccessful legal challenge by a group of Rotherhithe residents over light concerns and fears of a loss of green space.

Rotherhithe woman killed in High Holborn

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Tributes have been paid to a Rotherhithe woman who died in a collision with a lorry in central London last week.

Shatha Ali, 39, died on Tuesday, March 7, at High Holborn near where an Evelina London Children's Hospital doctor passed away last year (see article left).

Her friend Ala'a al Shehabi said she was "absolutely devastated to hear the tragic news" of the death of Ms Ali, who was originally from Bahrain in the Middle East.

Her family said she was "everybody's go-to person". Her father Hasan Ali told the Evening Standard: "She was extremely generous and contributed to many, many charities. She had very good, close friends."

Ms Ali worked as a corporate lawyer for city firm Latham and Watkins. She left last summer to take a career break.

Her former boss Stephen Kensell said he and colleagues were “shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of [their] dear friend Shatha.

"She was a kind and compassionate person, a selfless team player, an outstanding lawyer, and a terrific mentor.

"Our hearts are with Shatha’s family and friends at this unimaginably difficult time. Her generous spirit, warm personality, and, most of all, friendship, will be greatly missed.”

The street where Shatha passed away is notoriously dangerous for cyclists and nine bike users have died in the area in the past six years. One of these was Dr Marta Krawiec, a doctor at Evelina London in Waterloo.

Cycling campaigners held a protest on Friday (March 4) to demand changes to the junction to make road conditions

safer for cyclists.

Simon Munk, campaigns manager at the London Cycling Campaign, said: Just months from our last protest at Holborn, following the death of Dr Marta Krawiec, we are forced to return to this area and to junctions known for decades to be lethally dangerous to those walking and cycling, but where year after year nothing is done.”

Police said that no arrests had been made following Ms Ali’s death, and called for more witnesses to come forward a week after the incident.

Detective Sergeant Rebecca Collens, from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with Shatha’s family and friends who are understandably devastated by what has happened.

“We are working tirelessly to find out the circumstances of the collision and asking anyone who saw anything and has not yet spoken to us to come forward. Likewise, if you were driving in the area, please check your dashcam for any recordings that may have captured this collision.”

what’s on The Shorts 2.0 Festival reconvened after the Covid outbreak that cancelled out its December performances with all concerned having an extra two months to rehearse. And it showed, writes Elizabeth Paul...

First on was Free, a deep and complex work involving a couple with a baby and the ashes of a loved one who had recently passed on. For closure they placed the belongings of the deceased outside in boxes marked FREE for people to take away - After he had tried to eat the contents of the urn! ‘People can take the sadness away,’ the wife told the man grieving for his mother as they watched passers-by help themselves to the dead woman’s life.

These measures seemed to help overcome the grief, so more stuff was put outside in FREE boxes. Albums, framed photos… Life was good again and their relationship appeared to be returning to normal. But then their crying baby went in a FREE box in a comic sound effect scene, although I think I was the only one who laughed.

Eventually, the couple was so into cleaning out their lives that they dispensed with clothes because they got dirty and needed washing, until, finally, they stopped living a normal life and put themselves in a box marked FREE. It was a strange play with strong acting and a message of sorts that I didn’t really pick up on but knew was there.

Perhaps Free depicted how people grieve differently. Or maybe how some people take their beliefs to the extreme. The message was in there somewhere. Maybe in a box.

Nevertheless, it seems that the organisers left the best to last in this evening of two short plays because 39 & Out definitely produced a spectacular grand finale.

Earlier, I had found the 3-man crew responsible for this gem - that was strong on laughs - in the bar, practising their lines. I discovered the after last year’s cancellation, Nick Howard (Jimmy) and Ed Hay (Tommy) have used the extra time to fine-tune their performances with extra rehearsals, sometimes over Zoom but mainly meeting in houses, classrooms and

Small Island is an epic play A joyous, carefree childhood in Jamaica for the privileged was the complete opposite to the unprivileged children there, and although it wasn’t the usual white versus black divide it did place the lighterskinned nearer the top. Small Island tells the story of how some of those people fared when they got the call to help out the Mother Country, writes Michael Holland.

Aspirations of Suave at White Bear’s shorts 2.0 offices to turn this marvellous script in to a comedy masterpiece.

Michael Holland, the writer and director said, ‘Ed and Nick don’t need me any more, they have taken all my direction on board and raised the script to another level where they are now adding their own stuff, like the small, nuanced looks and reactions that have made it much more comedic than my words could ever do - It’s beautiful to watch them go to work.’

39 & Out is a slice of reality cut from Tom and Jim’s slightly pathetic lives. Not just unlucky at cards but unlucky in love, too, as we eavesdrop on them while they nurse their beers in a bar. These men are ‘not at the peak of their existence’ says the poster promoting this 15-minute play about two friends.

When a woman enters and saunters across the bar, Jimmy’s pulse is turned up to eleven and from then on the conversation veers toward their failed love lives, and what they can do to change things around.

Jimmy is seemingly the voice of reason, but as the power between these close pals flows to and fro we see this is not a war of attrition between them but a battle of banter as they struggle to hide their innermost fears behind jokes and laughter.

Talk of speed dating quickly turns to their symptoms of ageing fast and concocting a cunning plan to attract women that involves being more like Countdown’s ‘suave’ presenters.

With both their insecurities of growing old rising to the surface, drastic action needs to be taken, and that gave us a finish

that involved black leather gloves and House Of Pain’s Jump Around that had everyone in stitches.

39 & Out is a tragicomedy of the highest order and full marks goes to the writer, but the way Nick Howard and Ed Hay bring the text to life is a masterclass in acting.

This festival has a good cross-section of excellent writing and acting and is on for another seven nights. If this first night is an indication of what is to follow, then the festival will be a winner.

Southwark Playhouse has put a top team together to revive The Woods, a David Mamet play that has not been staged for over 20 years. And now I know why, writes Michael Holland...

She is excited about them being away together. He has done it all before. She wants to explore the woods. He doesn’t.

She wants to swim in the lake. Meh… She gives him a token of her love, a bracelet engraved with a promise of forever, and he is far from impressed. In fact, this is the last thing he wants. By the time they have had a glass of wine each, he is bored with her constant chattering, and the mood changes. He has no desire for a long-term relationship, or even now for Ruth.

I was bored with the nonsensical conversation that the programme tells us is based in mythology. Hardly any of the dialogue seemed real as they swapped scary stories and regurgitated the same stuff over and over.

The couple got drunker and nastier until, eventually, there was sexual and physical violence, which, surprise, surprise, he is consequently very sorry for and won’t do it again.

A great set, lighting, direction, and performances cannot save this old play that might be seen as complex but more probably as too clever for its own good.

Let’s put it this way, if there was an interval I would have made a dash out of The Woods and back to the reality of the city much sooner.

No escape from The Woods Nicky has invited Ruth to his parents’ cabin for a weekend together and away from the city where they can profess their love for each other.

The conversation out on the porch begins with small talk about the small animals around, then drifts into bigger beasts like beaver and bears, but carefully avoiding all mention of what they came to the woods for, until, that is, Ruth brings sex into it via a story about her grandmother.

The saga spans two continents and is told through the lives of Hortense (Leonie Elliott), Michael (Elliot Barnes-Worrell), Queenie (Mirren Mack), and Gilbert (Leemore Marrett Jr).

Hortense was brought up to believe her light skin was a guarantee of the good life, which it was in Jamaica. Michael and Gilbert felt proud to be able to enlist with the RAF and fight in WWII. All three found that their dreams of a better life crash-landed in Britain as they came up against a wall of racism at every turn. The jobs they once did at home were now closed to them; their skills and education wasted in menial work.

Adapted by Helen Edmundson from Andrea Levy’s book, Katrina Lindsay’s set design allows director Rufus Norris to use the huge stage and huge cast beautifully. The revolving section often overrun with people to create a busy city; others are elevated into the action through trapdoors. Video projections add to the scenes being played out and the first half ends with the Windrush magically appearing for those about to embark on what they hoped would be a lifechanging adventure to climb aboard.

In London, Gilbert’s dreams of becoming a lawyer faded as he found work driving a bus and a room at Queenie’s house. Queenie had been in the minority of people who took ‘coloureds’ as lodgers, thereby placing herself in the firing line of hate. Her portrayal of a decent person was countered by her husband Bernard’s hateful racism.

Life never panned out as the Windrush Generation once hoped, with Priti Patel-based repercussions regurgitating distaste even now. So, even though Small Island is set in the 1940s, it is an epic play that is very much relevant today. The Small Island is not only Jamaica, it is smallminded Little Britain.

TEMPORARY ONE WAY SYSTEM 1.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark, hereby gives notice that to enable development works to take place, it made, an Order the effect of which, will be to suspend the existing two way traffic flow system in Emerson Street.

2.

Whilst the restriction is in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, the existing two way traffic flow system in Emerson Street, at it’s junction with Sumner Street and Park Street, will be suspended, to allow for a temporary northbound one way traffic flow system to be implemented.

The alternative route for affected traffic will be via Park Street, Great Guildford Street, Southwark Street, Southwark Bridge Road, Sumner Street.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said work and for works vehicles, any vehicle being used in connection with police, fire or ambulance purposes and anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The effect of the experimental (Waiting and loading restrictions) Order are:(a) in DRUID STREET and SWEENEY CRESCENT to update the layout of existing ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions so as to accommodate the provision of cycle lanes referred to in item 2(a) and the suspension of the parking place referred to in item 3 preceding; and (b) to add ‘at any time’ loading restrictions on existing double yellow lines, in (i) DRUID STREET northeast side, between its junction with Tanner Street and a point 13.5 metres south-east of the southeastern kerb-line build-out of Sweeney Crescent, and (ii) SWEENEY CRESCENT on both sides, between its junction with Druid Street and a point 10 metres north-east of that junction.

On 23 February 2022 Southwark Council adopted The Southwark Plan 2022. The Southwark Plan 2022 sets the vision, strategic objectives and policies for development for the period 2019 to 2036. The Plan covers housing, business and town centres, social infrastructure, transport and communications, environment and green infrastructure, quality of the built environment and places and neighbourhoods.

Together with the Mayor’s London Plan, it forms the statutory development plan for the borough. The Southwark Plan 2022 superseded the following development plans: Saved Southwark Plan (2007), Core Strategy (2011), Canada Water Area Action Plan (2015), Peckham and Nunhead Area Action Plan (2014) and Aylesbury Area Action Plan (2010).

An irregular shaped area of highway at 160 Blackfriars Road which measures 28.57 metres in length (at its longest point between terminal points A to B) and 2.42 metres in width (at its widest point between terminal points B to C). The irregular area is illustrated by points A to G on the plan.

The Local Plan was the subject of an independent examination by Philip Mileham BA(Hons) MA MRTPI and David Spencer BA(Hons) DipTP MRTPI, the Planning Inspectors appointed by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government. In their report following the examination, issued on 17 November 2021, the Inspectors found the Plan to be sound, subject to inclusion of a number of main modifications listed in Appendix 1 of their report. Some additional minor modifications have also been included by the Council to address factual updates and corrections.

Jordan Green put Gavin Rose’s side ahead from the penalty spot but Quade Taylor was sent off for handball leading to the hosts’ winner.

Rose made one change from the side that defeated Braintree the previous weekend with Luca Levee returning in place of James Dayton.

The Hamlet went 1-0 up from their first attack of the game. Chike Kandi crossed and Green controlled before he was fouled by Imran Uche. Green beat goalkeeper Alan Julian from twelve yards with just three minutes gone.

Charlie Grainger denied Lucas Ness and then Ruaridh Donaldson shot over

But Dulwich seemed more likely to add to their lead as the half went on. Julian denied Gio McGregor from Jordan Higgs’ cross, Tyrone Sterling fired just wide from 30 yards and then McGregor’s drive from outside the box hit the top of the crossbar.

Veteran stopper Julian prevented Kandi from making it 2-1 before Grainger saved Robinson’s 25-yard effort.

Ten minutes into the second half, former Hamlet winger Iffy Allen hammered a shot past Grainger

that came back off the underside of the crossbar. Grainger saved Allen’s follow-up but from the hosts’ third attempt of a frantic scramble Taylor blocked the ball with his arm on the line and was red-carded. James Roberts converted the spot-kick.

Roberts went close to adding his second after taking advantage of poor control from Levee. Roberts had just Grainger to beat but the visiting goalkeeper got a touch to the attempt to divert it out for a corner.

Ten-man Hamlet struggled to create chances against a side that were happy to sit on their lead in front of their highest attendance at home this season.

In the 80th minute, Sterling found Ronnie Vint with a diagonal pass but his shot from 30 yards went wide.

Sterling fired over from inside the penalty area before Roberts missed another opportunity as he shot wide.

Hamlet substitute Ibra Sekajja had

one more chance to level when he tried a shot from distance that almost deceived Julian, but he found his bearings to save for a corner.

Dulwich couldn’t make anything of that set-piece as they left emptyhanded but avoided dropping a place as they stayed in sixth in the National League South table, level on points with St Albans City who are in the last play-off spot and a point ahead of Eastbourne Borough.

Town have worn the charity’s logo on the shoulder of their jerseys this season after forming a partnership with the MS Society last year.

Phillip was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2017.

The announcement of her new role was made on International Women’s Day on Tuesday.

The club will host a fundraiser at The Menace Arena next month.

Despite being bottom of the table before kick-off, Lordswood stormed into the lead in the twelfth minute in front of 159 fans in Rotherhithe. Fish goalkeeper Tommy Taylor made a brilliant save to tip Gavin Brown’s effort onto the crossbar but could do nothing to preventing Nathaniel Murray firing in the rebound from close range.

Ajay Ashanike’s side deservedly levelled in the 27th minute as Julio Da Mata robbed Wood stopper George Bentley of possession before setting up Vincent Follea who finished into an empty net from 30 yards.

Jacob Katonia shot over after a good run and a neat exchange down the right between Luke Thomas and Esteban Salgado.

Fisher thought they should have had a penalty early in the second half after what appeared to be a clear handball.

Salgado then set up Follea whose fierce effort from the edge of the box hit the angle of post and crossbar and Bentley stopped the rebound.

Despite struggling with a seven-player injury list including inspirational skipper Jordan Butler, the Lionesses were up for a battle and went ahead after 25 minutes through a brilliant 30-yard free-kick from Maisie Joyce.

Roared on by a large and partisan home crowd, after the pre-match brass band had set the tone, Fulham began to dominate in the second half searching for an equaliser to send the tie into extra-time and potentially penalties.

But the Lionesses coped well in their organised defensive shape, and goalkeeper Chrissie Wiggins’ handling was faultless, particularly from setpieces.

Stand-in captain and centre-back Sophie Chapman was the pick of the defenders, who at times were being asked to put their bodies on the line.

hand to clear an effort off the line the only time Wiggins was beaten, but the final minutes were a little more comfortable as Fulham’s frustrations grew.

APRIL 2012. That had been the last time Millwall had won five successive Championship games.

Those wins came in a run that helped keep Kenny Jackett’s side in the second tier for a third consecutive season as they went from nineteenth to finish sixteenth.

This time it propelled the Lions back into play-off contention.

Gary Rowett’s side are again showing their resolve as they bid to make the unthinkable from just four weeks ago happen. After the 3-0 defeat to Fulham it

looked like another mid-table season.

This resurgence has come at just the right time. As we all know, one team in the Championship often makes a late dash into the top six. Why can’t it be Millwall?

Clean sheets have been the key to the Lions’ success under Rowett, who has guided the team to two top-half finishes.

This one was a fifth in eight games – as many as in their first 23 games of the season.

Millwall aren’t a team that can outscore

opponents if they are conceding too many at the back. They have scored more than two goals in just one league game this season, the 3-1 win against Birmingham City.

So almost every goal tends to be crucial.

Step forward, Jake Cooper.

Cooper, wearing the captain’s armband in the absence of the injured Shaun Hutchinson and with Alex Pearce on the bench, scored his fourth goal of the season last weekend. All of them have been winners.

It was the same combination that did for Sheffield United. This time it was a corner rather than a free-kick, but in similar fashion Jed Wallace delivered towards the back post and Cooper arrived to power a header past Luke Southwood into the top corner.

From there on, it was an exercise of pure game-management, keeping the threat of Reading to a minimum and, on the whole, the Lions achieved that.

During the opening period, the hosts were happy to sit back and let the away team have the ball, something that Rowett’s side often struggle with as they lack creativity to break teams down in open play. It was no surprise that the visitors’ goal came from a set-piece.

The second half saw a shift in the pattern of the game from the hosts, who had to come out. The Royals desperately needed the points for a different reason as they try to avoid relegation, and the fight from them was there. However, they lacked any real quality in the final third, with Bartosz Bialkowski given very little to do.

It’s always going to be nervy when there is only one goal in it, though, and Paul Ince’s side did get opportunities to put the ball into the Millwall box from setplays. But despite being without arguably their best defender in Hutchinson, the Lions defence gave little away.

Cooper showed brilliant leadership in the middle of the back three but he had lots of support around him.

Whatever happens from here, Millwall deserve huge credit for the way they responded to a difficult start to 2022.

They have had 20 players out injured this season, more than half of them for more than a month.

Another top-half finish would be impressive. But the Lions have shown recently that they might not want to settle for just that.

Millwall freeze season ticket prices and press ahead with training ground plans

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL HAVE frozen the prices of general admission season tickets for 2022-23 – and are hoping to soon finalise their planning application for a new training ground.

In an update to fans, Lions chief executive Steve Kavanagh said the club’s board thought “long and hard” about next season’s pricing strategy, pointing out the Lions’ lost revenue due to Covid-19

restrictions and rising inflation affecting current costs.

Kavanagh said that a “consistent theme throughout those discussions was that this is a working-class football club and adhering to that history and tradition is at the heart of all our decision-making. As such, during a time when the price of our energy, fuel, water, and more is rising not just for us but for you all as well, we cannot justify also increasing the cost of coming to watch Millwall, and therefore general admission season tickets prices will be frozen.”

Meanwhile, Kavanagh expanded on the role of Alex Aldridge, who returned last week from Stoke City as Millwall’s

new Director of Football Operations and Recruitment.

Kavanagh added: “Part of Alex’s remit will be to contribute to the wider effort of implementing and monitoring an ambitious long-term strategy for continued growth on and off the pitch, which ties in with what I mentioned above about revenue generation.

“Alex will also have input into efforts regarding our proposed plans for a new training ground in West Kingsdown.

[Last] week has seen a lot of meetings take place with architects, design experts, the planning committee, and councillors, all of which is very time consuming but critical to the long-

term future of the club.

“We’re on track to submit a formal planning application in the very near future and we will continue to liaise with all stakeholders, including residents, to ensure we’re being as open and transparent as possible.

The plans taking shape now really are quite exciting (if expensive!).

“Fans will of course be incredibly eager to view the plans and part of the process will be a public consultation, at which stage all supporters will be able to have sight of what we expect to be a high-end modern training complex that is sympathetic to its environment and capable of taking the club to the next level.”

Millwall survive Rovers storm

The Lions were under the cosh for almost the entire game

But another story is how Millwall dug in against all the odds to claim one of their most unlikely points of the season.

Gary Rowett and his players probably knew they had gotten away with one, but few could say they didn’t deserve a break after some rotten luck this season with injuries and a Covid-19 outbreak meaning the entire outfield squad have been unavailable at some point.

Even this game, they shouldn’t have been here. The first match should have gone ahead. Despite snow warnings, Blackburn left their undersoil heating off and their ground staff didn’t exactly show much urgency clearing the pitch.

One of Millwall’s media team picked up a shovel to try to hurry the process.

The pitch actually looked fine by 2.30pm that Saturday last month but by then it was already too late, referee

Geoff Eltringham having made the decision to call it off fifteen minutes earlier.

So it was an unnecessary 500-mile round trip to Lancashire on Tuesday.

The Lions, and their fans, deserved the several slices of good fortune they got.

Millwall had to show every bit of their character and defensive resilience.

Their five-game winning run came to an end but they still moved up a place in the league table and are right in the mix with eleven games left.

The injury-hit Lions spent virtually the entire game on the back foot as Rovers goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski was left a shivering spectator on a chilly north-west night.

Rowett was as delighted as he was relieved with the hard-earned point.

It always going to be a tough ask to expect the depleted Lions to stretch their winning streak to six against a Blackburn team who have been in the top six for the last three months.

That’s before you even get to Millwall’s terrible recent record against these opponents, which now stands at just one win in their last

thirteen games.

But Rowett’s side showed again how hard they are to beat and the point maintained their upward trajectory in the Championship. They are just four points adrift of the play-off places, and only five off fourth-place Blackburn.

A little down the touchline in the other dugout, Tony Mowbray was left totally frustrated as his Rovers team failed to score for the ninth time in their last twelve games – a run when they have managed only three goals.

They were going to be without injured top-scorer Ben Brereton Diaz for that game last month and his absence here certainly helped Lions in their battle. It’s hard to think the 20-goal striker wouldn’t have taken at least one of the chances his side created.

There was a minute’s applause before the game to show solidarity with Ukraine as well as to pay tribute to former Blackburn boss Gordon Lee who died this week aged 87.

Lee led Rovers to the old Third Division championship in his one

season in charge, 1974-75, before departing for Newcastle.

The Lions were under the cosh from the start and were relieved to reach the break still level.

Rovers’ acute goal shortage since the turn of the year was underlined when they failed to turn their dominance into a lead.

Joe Rankin-Costello should have put them in front early on but after playing a one-two with John Buckley to burst into the penalty area he fired his shot wide of the far post.

Jan-Paul Van Hecke headed narrowly off-target from a corner while Buckley struck the outside of the post with a shot.

Sam Gallagher then sent a closerange volley wide from Buckley’s fine cross.

To say the Lions’ goal was living a charmed life was an understatement.

Millwall posed little threat going forward with Benik Afobe and Tyler Burey starved of any decent service.

it was little surprise the visitors couldn’t summon the energy to get up the pitch and attack with more numbers.

The Lions’ problems increased when skipper Jake Cooper put one foot on the tightrope as he was booked for a late tackle on Van Hecke.

And then yet another injury as Daniel Ballard, who was making just his second start after more than three months out following knee surgery in December, didn’t reappear at the start of the second half. This time it was a problem with his groin.

Rowett sent on midfielder George Evans to sit in front of the defence and changed formation to 4-3-3. But the Lions boss admitted after the game that had actually made things worse as the home side continued to dominate – and miss chances.

Buckley’s close-range shot was brilliantly saved by Bartosz Bialkowski, who somehow reacted to stick his left hand out

and prevent what had looked a certain goal. From the resulting corner, the unmarked Darragh Lenihan sent his header over the bar when he should have got his effort on target.

Rowett decided he had to do something to stem the tide. He sent on defender Alex Pearce for striker Burey and switched to 5-32. But it still remained mainly oneway traffic.

The ever-dangerous Joe Rothwell had appeals for a penalty rejected but in the face of the Lions’ dogged defence the home side began to run out of steam and ideas.

George Saville picked up a yellow card for a crude challenge on Lewis Travis but in the end Millwall saw the game out without too much anxiety.

But they will not always find opponents so wasteful in front of goal and will need to show far greater attacking threat to maintain their charge for a playoff place. And get forward players back from injury – quickly.

What the managers said Blackburn’s Tony Mowbray “We missed three massive opportunities to score a goal. We dominated all areas against a team who have won five on the bounce, I thought we restricted them to nothing, really.

“We’re left really frustrated, we had to be more ruthless when the chances came and went. On another day it could have been 3-0 and I don’t think they’d have complained.”

Millwall’s Gary Rowett “Blackburn started really well and moved the ball really well. I could see we just couldn’t quite get near enough.

“I can’t be critical of the players, they’ve given me absolutely everything these last few games. I thought we defended really well.

“It’s a really difficult period but the players are showing incredible commitment. For us it’s trying to get through to the international break. “[Bart Bialkowski] been our player of the year for a good few seasons. In moments like tonight he makes brilliant point-blank saves that a lot of other keepers don’t make.”

Over their previous fifteen games before their trip to Sheffield United on Tuesday night, only Huddersfield had accumulated more points than Middlesbrough’s 32.

In the same period, and before they played Blackburn Rovers this week, the Lions were eighth in that form table with 25 points.

But narrow that mini-table down to ten games (again, before the midweek fixtures) and the teams were fifth and sixth, Boro ahead with a better goal difference of just two.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett won five consecutive league games for the first time as a manager last weekend when the Lions defeated Reading 1-0.

If the hosts beat Boro, it will be the first time Millwall have won four league games in a row under Rowett, and another first in his managerial career.

Boro’s form has wobbled from late January after a run of six wins and a draw in seven games. They lost three of their next seven, including a shock 3-2 defeat at Barnsley.

But under Chris Wilder – whose first match in charge was the 1-1 draw at home to the Lions in November – the Teesside club have gone from fourteenth to the playoff spots and are a safe bet to be

“The fans were incredible. To come all the way up on the back of coming up here and not having a game, to the come all the way up here again, we always knew it was going to be difficult.

“We came up yesterday [Monday], sat around the hotel. You could just see it was going to be a difficult game for us to get that real spark.

“I think the players tried, they tried everything they could. Some games it just doesn’t work.

“But, you’ve got to try to get something out of the game by hook or by crook and I thought we showed a real spirit to get a clean sheet.

“Defensively we’ve been superb, and because of the defensive nature of that performance you’re not going to attack as much and get as many bodies in support of our forwards. It was a difficult game for the front players as well.

“But everyone worked hard, everyone kept going and I think a point is something really, really positive to take away from this game.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett has reiterated his desire to keep Daniel Ballard and would be open to another loan deal – but he admitted that is all down to Arsenal.

Centre-back Ballard, 22, has impressed this season on his temporary spell from the Gunners.

He has made 24 appearances but that would be a lot more if knee surgery hadn’t kept him out for more than three months.

Ballard had just got back into the side but then went off with a groin problem at half-time in the 0-0 draw against Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday. Rowett was hopeful afterwards it wasn’t too serious but he is a doubt to face Middlesbrough this weekend.

Rowett has taken a player on loan twice, Ryan Woods joining in

consecutive seasons in 2019-20 and 2020-21.

But Northern Ireland international Ballard is likely to be in high demand if he stays fit and continues to impress. That could put him out of Millwall’s reach.

The News asked Rowett before the Rovers game if there had been any discussions with Arsenal over their plans for him.

“Those things will be left to the club to do that work,” Rowett said.

“For me, Dan’s been out so our focus has been on getting him back in and making sure we look after him and that he recovers properly.

“Someone like Dan Ballard, I’ve said it before, we’d love to keep him at the club, whether that’s on loan or whether that’s permanently.

“But he’s Arsenal’s player and I’m sure they’ve got a plan for him longterm that’s maybe not the exact one we would hope for.

“We’ll see. We’ll get through to the end of the season and see where we are then.”

Millwall are chasing a play-off place with eleven games to go.

Rowett’s Derby side were in the top four over a fourteen-game period in 2017-18 before they finished sixth and then lost to Fulham in the playoff semi-finals.

He was asked if he would prefer to be the side in pursuit or if there is more pressure being in the top six at this point of the season.

“I don’t necessarily think so, every group is different,” Rowett said. “My experience was you don’t want to be dropping out of the top six in poor form close to the end of the season.

“There are still quite a lot of games left to go. But you certainly don’t want it to be five or six games to go and you’re dropping out and other teams are gaining momentum.

“But I don’t think there is any right way to do it. If you’ve got a bit of experience and can navigate some of the ups and downs in this division then you’ll finish where you deserve to finish.”
