Southwark Council to spend nearly £2m on topping up care home staff wages to London Living Wage

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Care home staff in Southwark are set to make at least £10.85 an hour as part of a new set of rules given the green light by Southwark Council last week.

The council wants to bring in the changes to improve conditions for people living in care homes in the borough.

Officers said in a report that “recognising staff by paying them a real living wage and improving their work conditions will create the conditions for a more stable workforce that will provide high quality and continuity of care for residents as well as support the development of trusting and long-lasting relationships”.

Paying everyone the London Living Wage would mean a council outlay of between £1.1 million and £1.8 million, depending on how many homes and providers sign up.

Other changes include: • Staff being paid for the time it takes to do handovers between shifts • Zero hour contract not being used in place of permanent contracts unless staff want them • Training being free and done in work time The new rules came about in part because of surveys done by the council with care home staff and residents in the borough.

nearly 80 per cent said homes acted when residents raised concerns.

The resident survey, while considerably smaller, found that people living in care homes were getting “hit and miss” support.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, Southwark's cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “We want safe, high quality and ethical care for all. Our new charter protects vulnerable

residents living in care homes and the remarkable people who have worked tirelessly to keep them safe throughout the pandemic.

“While providing care is often a vocation, this does not mean staff should not be properly rewarded for the important work they do on behalf of us all. I believe that having a better paid, better skilled and well-motivated workforce in our care

The New Homes Bonus scheme was set up

by David Cameron’s government in 2011 to encourage house-building by local councils.

But, there is no obligation for the council to use the bonus funding for housing development.

It is based on the amount of extra council tax revenue raised from new-builds, conversions of long-term empty homes brought back into use, and there is an additional payment for providing affordable homes.

Southwark Council’s building splurge placed it near the top in London last year. It

dwarfed Lewisham’s construction of only 301 new homes, earning the local authority around £1 million. Only Greenwich surpassed Southwark by building 1,459 homes last year.

Of the 1,355 new properties built by Southwark Council, 556 were defined as affordable housing - equivalent to 41%.

Still, there is no agreed-upon definition of affordable housing, and there are many different categories of subsided or discounted rent in the capital. However, the government says affordable homes should cost no more than 80% of average local rent. In an area

homes will help ensure residents receive the high quality care they deserve.

“In Southwark, we have a proud history of being a frontrunner when it comes to driving up standards of care. Our Residential Care Charter is the first of its kind anywhere in the country and one I hope to see many more organisations follow.”

The charter has also got the support of Unison, one of the UK’s largest unions.

where the average rent was £1,000 a month, this would mean that an "affordable home" cost £800 or less. Just 16% of Greenwich’s new-builds fell into the category of affordable housing - equivalent to 233 homes out of 1,459.

From Africa to Old Kent Road: ‘astounding number’ of birds sighted in Burgess Park

Over 85 different species of birds visited the park

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk An “astounding number” of birds were spotted in Burgess Park in 2021, with some coming from as far away as Siberia and sub-Saharan Africa, a local conservation group has found.

More than 85 different species of bird visited Southwark’s largest park, a figure more likely to be found in wilder areas than inner-city parkland.

“Burgess Park is a glowing example of what can be achieved by metropolitan green space in an urban setting,” said David Clark of Southwark Nature Action Volunteers, the organisation behind the figures.

“With its wide vistas, open spaces and lake settings, the park, believe it or not, is one of the most important areas for wildlife in South London,” he added.

Alongside more common garden birds, Burgess Park has sheltered much rarer species, including a whitefronted goose which normally lives in snowy Siberia.

Many species of songbird, which David says “weigh equivalent to only two teaspoons of sugar,” also use the park in spring as a pit-stop on their thousand-mile journey from subSaharan Africa to the Americas.

Come August they leave Old Kent Road to start their long trip back to the African continent.

Another frequent visitor was the Peregrine Falcon, which can reach speeds of up to 240 MPH. It “can often be seen flying over the park looking for their next meal,” says David.

However, he pointed out that “we also cannot escape” the impact of the climate emergency and human activity on local wildlife.

More than a quarter of UK bird

species are under threat, according to the RSPB. David urged locals to “help retain and enhance the health of our green spaces and birds,” particularly by avoiding feeding them with bread and keeping disturbances to a minimum.

Parks across the capital have regained importance since the recent spate of lockdowns.

“During Covid we have turned to our green spaces to provide some respite from the restrictions we have had to put up with,” said David.

“Being close to nature is known to be important for our physical and mental well being and the more we engage with nature the more we care for it.”

Superstar alpacas from Star Wars set to retire

Work stalled on Rotherhithe community garden that got £18,000 grant from the council a year ago

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Ben and Jerry, the “beloved” alpacas at Vauxhall City Farm, are retiring from public life after seventeen years of service, it has been announced.

The cheeky critters have starred in a Star Wars film, hob-nobbed with Royalty and featured on the BBC multiple times during their seventeen years on the farm.

They are leaving London on February 23 to enjoy a quieter life in the countryside.

“Ben & Jerry’s contribution to Vauxhall City Farm has been incredible. They are one of the most popular animals here on the farm,” said Vauxhall City Farm CEO Monica Tyler.

“Though their retirement will be a sad time at the farm, we have plenty of other superstar animals ready to fill any breach they may leave

behind,” she added.

Ben, Jerry and their late friend Tom first came to the farm in 2005.

They debuted at the Summer Sundae festivals on Clapham Common.

But this early taste of fame obviously left a lasting impression.

The pair turned their hooves to adverts, TV sports and supporting roles in film and television.

Yet their rise to stardom was catapulted when the alpacas appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and a 2020 meeting with Prince Edward & Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

Vauxhall City Farm is one of the oldest and most central of London’s City Farms.

The farm is a vital green space in a heavily built-up area, offering Lambeth locals the chance to escape from city life, relax and reconnect with nature – something that awaits Ben & Jerry too.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk In March 2021 a new ‘community garden’ in Surrey Quays was launched with an ambitious programme, including new trees, a kiosk, a ‘community farm’ and even a ‘wildlife pond’.

Organised by local volunteers, the PNK Garden was going to transform a patch of land that has long stood empty outside a residential building on Lower Road, on the corner of Croft Street.

A fundraiser - covered by the News raised £23,000, of which £18,000 came from Southwark Council. Canada Water developers British Land gave £1,000, alongside smaller donations from many others.

It seemed like a great plan: local people commenting on the fundraiser welcomed the idea of using the strip of land as a space for residents to come together, with one person calling it “a brilliant community initiative”.

The only problem? A year since the grant funding came through, there still doesn’t seem to be much of a garden in place. Social media posts show the brambles were cleared in April last year, and there are some plants growing on the site. The garden, which was first going to be called Garden SE8, is open for a few hours once a fortnight, every other Sunday.

But the site still looks largely empty: there are no trees or proper fences, and no wildlife pond, kiosk or garden shed.

Metal railings still line the edges.

Organiser Lara Salinas said that the volunteers were doing the best that they could, but that some momentum had been lost as people started concentrating more on their day jobs again.

Ms Salinas said that work was restarting in earnest and that fencing should be coming soon, followed by the trees and other plants. But the pond has been “put on the back burner”, while the kiosk is taking longer than

expected because of planning delays.

“Everything has taken longer than anticipated,” Ms Salinas said. “In terms of progress we are way behind where we wanted to be. At the beginning we were making a lot of progress.

“But all of us are working full time.

We were super busy at work, and after the lockdowns, life picked up again.”

She added that another problem had been that after being awarded the grant by Southwark, it had taken “several months” to be processed on the council’s IT system - apparently because the group did not have the right logo, among other administrative issues.

How is the money being used? Ms Salinas said that despite the fundraiser getting £23,000 in donations, the garden only got about £18,000 after the website administration costs and a deduction from the council. Pressed for a figure on how much of the £18,000 in donations has actually been spent over the past year, she gave a rough estimate of £5,000.

Neil Coyle faces calls to resign, but vows to carry on

Neil Coyle has faced calls to resign, after having the Labour whip suspended following claims that he made racist comments to a British reporter of Chinese descent at a bar in parliament earlier this month.

The suspension means he cannot vote with the Labour Party until the investigation into the claims is complete.

Coyle said he was sorry for his “insensitive” behaviour and added that he was proud to represent his “vibrant and diverse” Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency - but did not respond to calls made by his former Liberal Democrat opponent for him to step down.

Coyle allegedly said that fellow Labour MP Barry Gardiner, who reportedly received money from a suspected Chinese spy, had been "paid

by Fu Manchu", according to Henry Dyer, a Business Insider reporter with Chinese heritage.

Dyer said in a personal account for Business Insider that this comment was "not right, given it had been well reported who had been giving Gardiner money, and so there was no need to refer to a 20th Century trope of a Chinese supervillain."

He challenged Coyle, who allegedly then asked him if he was being oversensitive and offered to apologise if this was not the case. The MP then said he had relatives of Chinese descent, according to Dyer's account.

Dyer told Coyle he was British-

Chinese, to which Coyle allegedly said this was obvious "from how you look like you've been giving Renminbi [Chinese currency] to Barry Gardiner".

The reporter added that when he left he waved goodbye to Coyle in an attempt to defuse the situation, to

which Coyle allegedly stuck two fingers up.

Dyer reported his experiences to the parliamentary authorities, who have banned Coyle from parliamentary bars during the investigation into this claim, and another alleged incident where Coyle shouted at a Labour staff member, as we have reported.

Liberal Democrat councillor for London Bridge and West Bermondsey Humaira Ali, who lost to Coyle in the 2019 general election, called for him to resign.

She branded his "appalling" behaviour "racist", adding that he was "demeaning and a bully".

A spokesperson for Labour said: “The Labour Party expects the highest standards of behaviour from all our MPs and we take allegations of this sort very seriously. Accordingly the Chief Whip has now suspended the Labour whip from Neil Coyle pending an investigation.”

Coyle apologised, saying: “I am very sorry for my insensitive behaviour. My brother lives in China with his wife and kids and has been in touch to express his surprise.

“I’ve been amazed at the response in Southwark from the diverse community I’ve served since 2015 as MP and since 2010 in other elected capacities in as inclusive and accessible away to everyone as possible.

“I’m proud to represent such an amazing, vibrant and diverse community and will continue working as hard as ever for everyone locally and to get the Labour whip as soon as possible, including helping ensure we have more representative council

candidates ahead of the May elections.”

In the first alleged incident, Coyle was accused of shouting “f*ck you” at a Labour aide in a parliamentary bar after they claimed Brexit had not been a disaster for the UK. When a Tory MP tried to intervene, Coyle allegedly replied: “F**k off and lose some weight.”

In response to our initial enquiries, Coyle said he was “not allowed to talk” about the first incident, as it is currently subject to an investigation.

More apologies?

The Jewish Voice of Labour (JVL) has called on MP Neil Coyle to say sorry, after he apologised to Henry Dyer over allegedly racist comments.

JVL liaison officer Marion Roberts said Mr Coyle’s apology was “in shocking contrast to his response to allegations of antisemitism.”

In defence of his tweet, which suggested that all the 350 members of JVL should be expelled for being “communists”, Mr Coyle said the JVL are “not friends of the Labour party” and “do not live in Southwark.”

“I have lived in Southwark for thirty years and have been a Party member for all that time,” says Roberts. “Furthermore, I’m not as he claims, “thick.”

“When is Neil Coyle going to apologise to JVL,” he added.

Covid rates down but more urged to get jab

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Some 1,695 people tested positive for Covid in the seven days from February 9-February 15, down about 24 per cent from 2,238 the previous week, government figures show.

That makes Southwark the London borough with the sixth-highest number of new Covid cases over the past week, behind only Wandsworth, Barnet, Ealing, Croydon and Lambeth.

Meanwhile only six boroughs recorded slower drops in new infections over the same period.

Despite this, Southwark's new Covid infections are much lower than they were a month ago, and even further down from the period before Christmas, when the Omicron variant was spreading quickly through the capital.

The number of people who died within four weeks of testing positive

It came as the NHS continued to urge people to get the booster jab. Nearly 150,000 people in Southwark have had their booster as of this week.

Dr Emily Lawson, who leads the vaccination programme for the NHS, said: “More than four in five eligible people aged 16 and over are double jabbed and over half have already taken up the offer of a booster, with tens of thousands still coming forward every day.

“However, NHS data shows that millions of people are overdue their booster by at least six weeks – four million people have not come forward for their top-up since they received reminders from the NHS in December – and while some had to delay because of a coronavirus infection it is still absolutely crucial that people get their booster in order to increase their protection against reinfection and the dangers of long Covid."

Still waiting after IT glitch

For him, having a vaccination was time consuming and did not fit in with his hectic schedule of school, social life and extra-curricular activities inclu ding working toward his driving test.

Explained the 18-year-old: “I didn’t think I needed to have the vaccine as only a few of my friends had vaccines and initially coronavirus only affected peop le who were older.”

When the vaccine was first implemented, he was also sceptical of how fast it was developed and declared safe.

The 32-year-old was initially hesitant about having the jab because she was pregnant. But she changed her mind.

“By the time it was my turn to get the vaccine, I was pregnant with Finley, who’s now four months old. The world didn’t feel like a particularly scary place then. Cases were lower, we were coming into summer and I felt quite confident I could probably avoid situations and people.

“My daughter Evie, who’s three, wasn’t in nursery. I work from home running my own children’s wear business and I could meet people outside. So I thought I could manage my risk until October, which was when the baby was due.”

Clear advice from an immunologist at the charity ‘Pregnant Then Screwed’ led Rhian to alter her stance. “That gave me the confidence to go for it. I went to have my first vaccine in July. I was due to have my second in October but, coincidentally, I went into early labour on that day.

“Although I was only single-jabbed when I gave birth, I’ve now had two vaccines and the booster.”

‘They made life a lot easier’ Vaccine hesitant, Kai Lutterodt KAI LUTTERODT was hesitant as she didn’t want to be among the first to have a vaccine because of fears of future possible long term issues and other side effects.

The 36-year-old explained: “With the stories I heard, not to mention the scaremongering, it was difficult to differentiate the truth from the fiction so I just put it to the back of my mind and waited.”

Kai continued: “I had my first vaccine in summer 2021 because Italy implemented a green pass system which would mean, to even eat inside a restaurant, I would need to show I’d had a vaccination.

“Having the vaccinations has made my life a lot easier when travelling and will continue to do so.”

Kai believes safety and choice are priorities when deciding whether to get a vaccine.

“It is always a choice but for me, if you are surrounded by people who are particularly vulnerable, their safety from the virus should always be a priority.”

Peter Frank Hickman, 85, was in charge of children’s homes both as a Housemaster and Superintendent in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Hickman of Lawdley Road, Coleford, Gloucestershire, was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court last Friday, February 11, to six years’ imprisonment.

Appearing before Croydon Crown Court on 26 July last year he pleaded guilty to the following offences: • Indecent assault on a boy under the age of 16, committed in the victim’s bedroom, between December 1965 and November 1972; • Indecent assault on a boy under the age of 16, on at least 30 occasions, between December 1965 and November 1972; • Gross Indecency on a boy under the

age of 14, on at least 30 occasions, between December 1965 and December 1970.

He will be placed on the sex offenders’ register for the rest of his life.

In 2018, officers from the Met’s Operation Winterkey received a third party allegation of non-recent sexual assault. Operation Winterkey investigate allegations of nonrecent child sexual abuse involving people of public prominence and/or institutions.

In May 2018, the officers spoke with the victim, who confirmed his willingness to engage with the investigation.

against the victim whilst he was resident in a children’s home located in Park Road, Beckenham and later located in College Road, Dulwich, during the 1960s and 1970s.

Detective Constable Simon Rubery, the investigating officer, said: "Hickman took advantage of a child in his care while in a position of trust and committed atrocious crimes against him on many occasions.

“Tragically the victim died last year and he will never know that his abuser has been brought to justice. I would like to commend his bravery for helping to make this possible.

“I can only hope that this sentence will give others the courage to come forward and report any abuse they have suffered, current or non-recent.

“Given the predatory nature of Hickman’s offending, there is a possibility that he abused other children. We urge any further victims to contact police right away – a specially trained team of detectives are ready to listen and support you.”

‘Enough is enough’: protestors fight infilling on Dulwich estate

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Locals have protested against a new development on the Lordship Lane Estate in Dulwich this weekend over concerns around overcrowding, traffic and the environmental impact.

Southwark Council’s current plans indicate that seventeen new homes will be built on the garages adjacent to Maxwell Court. All of which will be for social rent.

“We are not anti-council housing, we want homes for decent working-class people,” said campaigner Elizabeth Shirley, who has lived on the estate for decades.

“But like all estates in this area, we are totally over density, there are too many people crowded in here.”

She believed that instead of developing their “harmonious” and ”sleepy” estate the council should “take more radical action” to use empty properties and refurbish existing ones.

“They keep saying they cannot afford to do it, but sorry it is not good enough.”

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “We’re looking at a range of innovative ways to provide the affordable housing our residents desperately need.

“As well as building new council homes, we’re converting garages and disused areas,” she added.

There are currently 16,500 households on Southwark Council’s housing waiting list, while 3,500 live in temporary accommodation.

Other protestors were concerned about the lack of a clear access route to the site, meaning “big lorries” may have to pass by people’s homes and the estate’s child’s play area.

“The noise will be horrendous for everybody,” said council tenant Bill Newman, who lives right next to the estate’s entrance. “It is really frustrating.”

“With all the traffic coming and going it is actually going to be quite dangerous.”

In response to this claim, Cllr Cryan said: “As on all our New Homes sites, we would

ensure that construction traffic is carefully managed, with fixed timed slots and vehicles accessing the site at times when other traffic is less busy.”

Campaigners have launched several petitions and planning objections to the development.

Protestors claim that the communication from Southwark Council has been poor and they have been repeatedly left in the dark about the planning process. “We don't trust the council,” said Elizabeth. “First of all, they said the new building would only be two storeys, now it has gone up to six storeys.

This will block out the light for so many people on our estate.”

The protestors, who said there “was lots of green and lots of trees on the estate”, were worried about the long term environmental impact of the new development.

“They are concreting over the whole bloody world,” said Elizabeth.

“This is using up so many resources that have a massive effect on our carbon footprint. We don't want to be a part of that.

Enough is enough,” she added.

Brian Kelly and his wife Lynn, who are part of the Yes to Fair Development campaign, said that ultimately the development of Lordship Lane was a political issue.

“We understand that the government has pulled back money from the local authority that they need to claw back through new housing. But it is local people who are paying the price.”

Planning approval for the new development on Lordship Lane will be sought this summer.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Work has been paused on a controversial plan to build new flats on the car park of a Bermondsey estate - because of current residents’ complaints about the state of disrepair of the existing flats.

Southwark Council has long planned to build thirteen flats for social rent on the car park of the Vauban Estate, near Spa Gardens. The estate already has about 100 flats. Several residents spoke out against the plans with concerns about lighting and overcrowding, which are typical objections to Southwark ‘infill’ plans.

But the plans have been put on the back burner because of a report put together by someone who lives on the estate detailing claims of mould, infestation by rats and mice, water damage and other examples of disrepair that allegedly have not been dealt with by the council.

The report surveyed a sample of twelve households, roughly ten per cent of the estate, including nine council tenants and three households that owned their property.

Among a litany of complaints, one tenant said he had been plagued by mould in his bedroom and bathroom for five years, while another family said they had suffered with rising damp for nine years. A third household has allegedly had rats and mice in every room in their flat for three years.

The residents campaigning against the new builds said: “This report shows how inappropriate introducing such an infill to the estate would be. If Southwark Council is not able to deal with the current needs of this estate - and its residents - how can it justify expanding upon it and subjecting new residents to similar woes in the process?”

The report appears to have had the desired effect for the campaigners: a Southwark new homes officer told residents in a letter last month that “ward councillors have requested that the council’s sole focus be on delivering tangible improvements to the repair and maintenance of the existing estate before any further discussion of new homes. New homes consultation activities are therefore paused until further notice.”

It is unclear which “tangible improvements” will be delivered, or when.

Council housing boss Stephanie Cryan said: “We have decided to take more time in our plans to build new homes on the Vauban Estate and prioritise residents’ concerns about the estate at it stands.

Our Repairs team is in contact with residents and the Vauban Estate Action Group in order to identify specific homes that require attention. We have arranged to visit properties and continue regular monthly inspections of the communal areas. These will ensure any necessary repairs are raised and resolved by the team as effectively as possible.”

Southwark has more than 16,000 households on its waiting list for new council homes and thousands more in temporary accommodation. Many are living in horrible, overcrowded conditions.

Cllr Cryan has long said that she is prepared to pause and rethink unpopular new homes projects, pointing to Bells Gardens estate in Peckham, where a new homes programme became all social housing after an outcry. A new block on the Dodson and Amigo estate was also paused in late 2021.

But the borough’s council estate umbrella group, the Southwark Group of Tenants’ Organisations (SGTO), claimed last year that new infill projects were often being pushed through without officers listening properly to residents’ objections.

British Land defends vegetation clearing at Canada Water Dock

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Canada Water developers British Land have tried to reassure Rotherhithe residents that the uprooting of trees and plants around the Canada Dock is not as bad as it looks.

As the News reported earlier this year, the Canada Water Masterplan developers got planning permission from Southwark Council to install a large new boardwalk across the dock, as well as raising the dock’s water level and improving water quality with a new drainage system. Other changes include a pergola and a new ‘dipping pond’ that will be open to the public, with gate access for safety.

Several local people objected to the plans, which involve getting rid of trees, shrubs and vegetation to ground level along the

western and southern edges of the dock.

One objector called it "criminal", while a Southwark planning officer said it was "regrettable" that cutting down the plants would disrupt two nesting seasons.

Work started on Monday, February 14 on clearing plants from the area, sparking a fresh outcry from some local people with stark views emerging of bare banks in place of trees and bushes.

The work is set to last two weeks and has been timed to avoid nesting season.

British Land said that it was working with the London Wildlife Trust to mitigate harm by providing alternative habitats for the swans and other wildlife, in a presentation aimed at local residents.

The developer said that it was building nesting and feeding platforms with steps for cygnets, refurbishing three existing bird shelters and moving existing floating plant beds.

Camberwell man faces jailed for shooting advice

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Camberwell man is facing a jail sentence after repairing an illegal gun and giving advice on using the gun.

Danny Harle, 26, was convicted last Monday week, February 7, of possession of a firearm with intent to

enable another to endanger life.

He had previously pleaded guilty to the supply and possession with intent to supply Class B controlled drugs after being found with cannabis.

Harle will appear for sentencing at the same court this Friday, February 18.

It comes after Harle was identified by police as a person of interest following

a shooting in Herne Hill in September 2020, and carried out secret recording as part of their investigation into him.

Harle was visited on October 2020 by someone who had a gun and wanted advice on how to stop it jamming.

Recordings showed him giving advice on using the correct ammunition, and that he had managed to unjam the gun.

He also gave advice on how to enable a successful shooting, telling the person to "grease it every time you go out there".

He was found not guilty of two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life after the Herne Hill shooting in September 2020.

Detective Constable Mick Grimshaw, from the Specialist Crime Command, said: “Throughout this investigation we found that Harle put others in danger in order to further his illegal enterprise.

“There can be no doubt that Harle is a man with little regard for the safety of those around him. He was documented quite clearly ‘repairing’ an illegal firearm for another person and advising them how to carry out future shootings. This man’s potential to not only harm others, but to school other criminals in committing other acts of violence is untold.

“I hope that today’s verdict demonstrates the Met’s commitment to pursuing individuals such as Harle and bringing forward robust case files which will result in custodial sentences for people as dangerous as this man.”

Kids Company supported 36,000 vulnerable children and families across London and Bristol at its peak, although it was giving £1,700 a month to 25 children before its collapse, despite receiving a reported £42 million in grants from the UK taxpayer.

The board of trustees at Kids Company were also criticised in the report for failing to properly oversee the children’s charity.

Helen Stephenson, the chief executive of the Charity Commission, said Kids Company’s sudden closure was a

“significant event”, not just for those involved with the charity, but wider society.

Batmanghelidjh immediately contested the report’s findings, threatening to take legal action to overturn what she called a “travesty” of a report and an attempt by the commission to “rewrite history.”

She claimed the report was based on allegations that had been comprehensively dismissed by a court ruling more than a year ago, which found no evidence of mismanagement

or wrongdoing and praised them as a “group of highly impressive and dedicated individuals.”

Kids Company was also accused of child abuse in 2015, but a six-month investigation by the Met found no evidence of abuse, criminality or safeguarding failures.

The court concluded the charity would have survived had it not been for the unfounded abuse allegations.

Man glassed in Nunhead

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A man was taken to hospital after being glassed in the face in Nunhead last Thursday night, February 10, police have confirmed.

No one has been arrested yet and police continue to look into the attack, which took place on Cheltenham Road close to midnight.

Unconfirmed eyewitness reports told the News that forensic officers were at the scene on Friday morning (February 11).

A spokesperson for the Met police said: "Police were called to a property in Cheltenham Road, SE15, at 23.56hrs on Thursday, February 10 by London Ambulance Service to reports of an injured man.

"Officers attended. A man reported that he had been hit in the face with a glass object causing a large cut.

"He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital. His injuries have been assessed as non life-threatening.

"There have been no arrests.

Enquiries continue."

Kids Company charity criticised for ‘failures’ by watchdog a year after it was cleared of wrongdoing

Kids Company has been criticised in a report for a “mismanagement in the administration of the charity” - a year after the high court cleared it of wrongdoing.

The Camberwell based charity, set up by Camilla Batmanghelidjh, was accused of operating a “high-risk business model” and “mismanagement in the administration,” by the Charity Commission this week.

Yet, the long-awaited report confirmed there was “no dishonesty, bad faith, or inappropriate gain in the operation of the charity,” and said there was no basis for regulatory action against Batmanghelidjh.

Other problems with Kids Company named by the Commission were a heavy dependence on grants and donations, repeated failure to pay creditors, including its own workers and HMRC, alongside low cash reserves.

It added that more cash reserves could have allowed the charity to avoid liquidation or wind up in a more orderly fashion.

Kids Company collapsed in 2015 amid allegations of mismanagement - just weeks after it was handed a £3 million grant by David Cameron’s government.

The charity was well known for its high-profile work providing practical and emotional support for children affected by trauma, violence and poverty.

The operating hours are reducing from 21 February The central London Congestion Charge will operate Monday-Friday 7am-6pm, weekends and bank holidays noon-6pm. The daily charge is £15.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ launches ovarian tissue cryopreservation service A NEW fertility preservation service for ovarian tissue has been launched at Guy’s and St Thomas’ for women undergoing cancer treatment.

One of the first in the UK, the comprehensive service offers patients all possible methods currently available for fertility preservation such as ovarian tissue freezing as well as standard egg and embryo freezing.

Ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) is a new addition to one of the biggest and oldest fertility preservation services in the world.

It offers women of a reproductive age undergoing chemotherapy or stem cell transplants the chance to preserve their fertility.

This new service comes thanks to the supporters of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Guy's and St Thomas' Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) – with King’s College London’s Professor Dusko Ilic leading its implementation and the BRC helping to fund the service.

OTC is performed after ovarian tissue is collected by simple keyhole surgery, before a patient starts chemotherapy.

When the patient is ready to start a family, the tissue can be re-implanted.

Faster than other fertility preservation methods, OTC benefits women who are too unwell to wait and have standard egg collection – which takes two to three weeks. It minimises the delay before cancer therapy can start.

OTC also offers women the chance to restore their natural menstrual cycle and function, even if early menopause occurs, as well as the possibility to conceive naturally.

Dr Julia Kopeika, lead for the fertility preservation service at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “We’re so pleased to now be offering ovarian tissue cryopreservation as part of our well established fertility preservation service.

This cutting-edge technology will allow us to help protect the fertility of more of our women undergoing cancer and stem cell treatments.

“The Cancer Centre at Guy’s is one of the UK’s leading centres and so we can treat really complex cases, as well as taking patients from other hospitals. Often these women are too unwell to travel for fertility treatment, so it is great we can

now offer a comprehensive service with our dedicated team including specialist nurses and councillors to help guide patients through the process.”

Maxine Semple, the lead of the OTC service team said: “We are extremely proud of the ground we have covered in such a short period of time. Our team have worked tirelessly to ensure that we are providing a service that is changing the face of fertility preservation globally.”

The service has also recently expanded to offer young women aged 14 and over who are going through chemotherapy treatments the chance to preserve their fertility and freeze their ovaries at Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

Around 150 babies have been born after ovarian tissue cryopreservation worldwide.

A family has taken on a trio of fundraising challenges to raise money for Evelina London, which saved their son and brother's life after he was born with serious heart problems, writes Kit Heren...

George Warner-Bryce was born in 2014 at St Thomas' with six congenital heart defects - including a hole in the heart, arteries the wrong way round and an underdeveloped right side of the heart.

He went through three heart operations over the next four years.

The second almost went badly wrong and George had to be resuscitated three times. The family said this had no lasting impact on his development.

Mum Hannah, 33, a teaching assistant, said: “We decided to take on three fundraising activities to give back to the hospital that has given us so much. We want to help other children like George to get the very best care."

Despite her fear of heights, she ran up the Eiffel Tower. George's brother Alfie, 13, did a virtual cycle of 350km.

Dad Richard, 37, abseiled down the side of St Thomas' hospital to complete the challenges.

A man has said thank you to the doctors at Guy's and St Thomas' who found the rare condition that caused him years of unbearable headaches and made the pain go away.

Julian Belsom woke up one morning with what he thought was toothache.

He went to the dentist but nothing they suggested made the pain any better.

The excruciating pain came in stretches lasting between about 30 seconds and two minutes, recurring many times throughout the day hundreds of times on a bad day.

Doctors in various different hospitals treated him for the pain but nothing prevented it from happening for longer than a month.

Julian, 50, said: “It was unbearable.

I thought my head was going to explode. It felt like my teeth were about to crack at any moment.

“I’d have some pain free days and after one treatment I didn’t have pain for a month, but every time

it returned and came back with a vengeance. Some days it was so bad I couldn’t walk, talk, sleep, eat or even move without it causing pain. My mental health suffered so badly to the point I was contemplating suicide.

“I couldn’t work because the pain was so immense, which meant I wasn’t paid and I couldn’t keep up with my mortgage repayments, so I lost my house. It felt as though my whole life was falling apart.”

Years on, Julian's wife got in touch with the Guy's and St Thomas' headache and facial pain service.

Doctors found that Julian had a rare disorder called short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache with conjunctival injection and tearing, known as SUNCT syndrome.

The cause of the excruciating pain was an artery in the back of his head that was compressing a nerve.

A King's neurosurgeon, Sinan Barazi, was brought on to carry out a difficult and uncertain procedure, separating the artery and the nerve and putting a strip of teflon between them to keep them apart.

Julian was told there was no guarantee of success or how long the pain relief would last, but has been pain-free ever since.

“Since the operation, I’ve been completely pain free. I was able to start work again and begin getting my life back on track. It really has changed everything.”

To show his appreciation for the work of the team who have cared for him, earlier this year Julian walked along the Jurassic Coast, on the English Channel coast of southern England, to raise money for Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity.

The 34 mile walk took fifteen hours to complete and is something Julian couldn’t have even considered previously. Julian said: “It was a really difficult walk but something I’ll never forget.

“The team who cared for me work so tremendously hard so I’m pleased to give something back. The surgery has given me a new lease of life and I can’t thank them enough.”

Hannah added: “Evelina London is a special type of hospital, they feel like family. The staff took the time to get to know us when I was first seen in the fetal cardiology department, and continued being so supportive with all of George’s treatment.”

The family raised £2,700 in total from their exploits.

Dr Owen Miller, consultant in paediatric and fetal cardiology at Evelina London, said: “George is a wonderful little man and his family work together with the whole Evelina London team to deliver the holistic care needed for a growing child. We are so grateful that families go above and beyond to support us.”

‘Coming together’ - creating a school community in se5 Comber Grove Primary School in Camberwell has brought the community together with a host of events, writes Joshua Askew...

“We are trying to bring back the community spirit after the pandemic,” said parent governor Hatice Gungor.

“The lockdown has affected everybody mentally.”

Along with fellow governor Lee Strong, the mother-of-three has launched a fortnightly coffee morning at the school, where parents can socialise, seek help and support one another.

“We are very fortunate to have such good governors who understand our concerns,” said Kelly Clifford, whose seven-year-old daughter attends the school.

“They help our kids reach their potential by supporting us to reach our potential.”

“Go on governors,” she added.

There is a big focus on supporting parents through education and training at these events, with IT and literacy workshops planned for the future.

One struggling parent has managed to gain employment at a local nursery by volunteering at the school.

Another mother of two children at the primary school, Jade Ximines, said the coffee mornings had been an “absolute lifeline.”

“The governors are really approachable.”

“They are so helpful and supportive with whatever we need,'' she added.

Where there was once “little parental engagement before the pandemic”, Lee and Hatice’s efforts

to forge a tight-knit community are proving hugely popular.

More than 20 parents attend each session, yet new faces are coming all the time.

Many have formed close friendships are now spending time with others outside of the school.

“We love our school,” said Lee. “We are really proud of what we have done.”

“It's hard and tiring, but what we do is rewarding.”

The pair, who “get on like a house on fire”, say they have much more in store for the school.

They are aiming to set up big events every term, alongside smaller regular fixtures, such as mother and baby, film nights and father’s breakfasts.

“We have so many ideas,” says Lee. Head Teacher Sarah Bowmer

believed this "coming together" of parents was “so important”, as Comber Grove is a disadvantaged school, with many families facing tough challenges.

Mental health has been a major concern of the school following the pandemic, as well as poverty and marginalisation.

But, despite the challenges they may face, parents are working together to help Comber Grove, which itself is having issues surrounding funding and pupil numbers.

Parents have donated whatever they can to raise money for the school, while the governors have converted one of its disused rooms, which was no longer needed due to downsizing, to host their parent's events - all on their own initiative.

Parental involvement is a “top priority” for the school, says head Sarah, and vital to its long-term survival.

“Other schools keep parents out because of Covid. But we are the opposite. We want them in as much as possible.”

“More than a simple drop off and pick up, we want to create a community.”

‘Once in a lifetime’ - street party for Queen’s Jubilee Camberwell will hold a multi-day street party to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June, it has been announced, writes Joshua Askew...

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate the social cohesion and diversity within Southwark,” said event organiser Steven Robins.

Bermondsey residents are raising money to revamp a small local park that has links to Ada Salter, the trailblazing socialist mayor of Bermondsey in the 1920s, writes Kit Heren...

Local organisation Trees for Bermondsey are running the campaign to give Shuttleworth Park a makeover. The park is bounded by Southwark Park Road to the north, Galleywall Road to the east and the Manor Estate to the west.

Trees for Bermondsey say they want to reconnect the park "to the heart of the Blue market place and to make it a welcoming, nature-filled oasis for the whole community to enjoy".

As part of this, the group will plant more flowers and put in new hedgerows.

A longer-term target is to refurbish the

children's play area that sits in the middle of the park.

Trees for Bermondsey also want to repair an older water pump in the site and turn it into a working fountain.

Organisers Cat Hayes and Sarah Vaughn originally thought the park was designed by Ada Salter, who after the First World War started the beautification programme to build parks and plant trees in the area, which was heavily polluted at the time.

It turns out that she actually designed Shuttleworth Gardens, across Galleywall Road, which have since been replaced by buildings. The area that is now Shuttleworth Park was a children's playground.

Nevertheless, Trees for Bermondsey feel a connection to Ada, and with this year

marking the one hundredth anniversary of her becoming mayor, Cat and Sarah said that revamping the park would be a good way to continue her legacy.

"We just thought it was a shame that we have this park not really being used that much but with so much potential," Cat said. "Southwark Park Road has hardly any greenery and it would be nice to change that."

The fundraiser has got more than £2,700 so far, as well as more funding from an M&S scheme and a possible grant from Southwark Council. All being well, planting should start this autumn, with the first flowers to appear next spring.

Cat added: "It's just a small little park but it could be lovely!"

hroughout the pandemic, Labour has been on your side.

On your side helping you get the vaccine.

On your side through our Community Support Alliance helping over 70,000 residents get food, medicine and other support that they need. On your side protecting jobs through over £120 million of support for local businesses. And on your side ensuring young people in the borough had the laptops they needed to continue to learn safely.

The way that our community has come together and supported each other through such challenging times has been truly inspiring.

It is therefore even more disappointing that those who were in power and making the rules were not only breaking them, but also had the audacity to try to cover it up. As residents in Southwark and across the country suffered real heartbreak, lost loved ones and missed the chance to say goodbyes, No. 10 partied.

And whilst in Southwark your Labour-run council ensured all of our care homes and schools had the PPE they need, the Conservative government were wasting £8.7 billion of taxpayers – your – money on PPE that was unusable or wildly overpriced, buying much of it through dodgy contracts with their friends, family and local pub landlords. That £8.7 billion that they have had to right off would be enough to fund Southwark Council for the next 27 years!

I know many of you will be as angry as I am, but as the government focuses on trying to save the Prime Minister’s skin, Southwark Council will be focusing on the things that matter to our local residents.

Many residents will be worried about rising energy bills, which are another burden on the already rising

cost of living. The council has launched the Southwark Energy Fund supporting struggling families with one off payments, which has already provided support to over 9,000 residents. We are doing what we can as a council, but the reality is that this will not be enough to prevent many residents facing fuel poverty. Especially after the government cut universal credit for thousands Southwark residents. That’s why, alongside local community groups, we are campaigning for the urgent national action needed to tackle the cost of living crisis.

I would like to thank Citizens Advice Southwark, Southwark Pensioners Centre, PECAN and Southwark Group of Tenants Organisations for joining our call to government to put measures in place to tackle the cost of living crisis. Joining forces as the council and community allows us to more effectively make the case and hopefully force the government to take action on this urgent issue. No one should have to choose between heating their home and feeding their family, so we will continue to do everything in our power to support our most vulnerable residents, while also pushing government to do more too.

I know that many people across the borough have faced significant delays to their post due to ongoing issues with the postal service. This is causing huge issues for residents and can have serious consequences, from delayed benefits and pensions letters to missed NHS appointments. I appreciate that Royal Mail has faced challenges as a result of the pandemic, but it is not acceptable that hundreds of residents are still facing significant delays to their post. That is why I have written to the Chief Executive Officer of Royal Mail to request an urgent meeting to discuss your concerns and press the Royal Mail to find a solution.

Well done Southwark for stepping in to fill the pay gap of care home staff

I

t’s great news that Southwark Council wants to pay all care home staff the London living wage - it’s the least they deserve. But why should the council have to step in?

As is well known by now, care home workers have been the unsung heroes on the front line of the pandemic - often putting themselves at risk of catching Covid-19 through their work. This is particularly true in London. One study found that London had a higher rate of care home deaths from Covid-19 than any other region, while another found that infection levels were also higher.

This is work that is all too often poorly paid and insecure - London’s social care workers are more likely to be on zero hours contracts than their counterparts in any other part of the country, and there is a higher vacancy rate among these jobs in the capital too.

Southwark’s head of health and wellbeing Cllr Evelyn Akoto, quoted in this week’s paper, put it best: “While providing care is often a vocation, this does not mean staff should not be properly rewarded for the important work they do on behalf of us all.”

This is also a question of equality. According to the council, 85 per cent of care home staff in the borough are women, and throughout London, people employed in these jobs are more likely to be from an ethnic minority - one study found that more than two-thirds of the capital’s care home staff were BAME in 2018/19.

So the pay rise and the end to unwanted zero-hours contracts for care home staff in the borough are very welcome, both for care home staff and for the people they work with, who should benefit from a more motivated and better-skilled workforce, as Cllr Akoto said.

But why should Southwark Council - and by extension, Southwark taxpayers - have to shoulder the costs of private businesses paying their staff enough to live on?

Dirty Russian money ‘ridiculously’ inflating house prices, says MP

joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, has said that 'corrupt Russian money' is causing severely inflated house prices in the borough, while the government is turning a blind eye to the problem.

He said: “In Southwark, we know better than most about rising house prices, but the market is badly overheated due in part due to corruption with Russians and others buying houses at ridiculously inflated prices in order to launder finance through our capital.

Property prices in Southwark have soared by 77 per cent over the past decade.

Last year the average price of a house in Southwark was £678,138. Far more expensive than nearby Lewisham (£532,263) and Bromley (£561,698), according to data from Right Move.

Money laundering is a process where cash gained from crime is invested in property and assets, so that it appears legitimate.

Mr Coyle claimed the government

was turning a blind eye to the illicit Russian money flooding into the capital.

“The Government admits there is a problem but has failed to act for years, adding to London’s housing crisis and leaving some homes empty that could be better used,” he said.

He added: “Ministers have promised action but refused to publish one report for months which outlined concerns and have failed to deliver on multiple previous commitments in this area, with some concluding that the multimillion-pound donations to Tory coffers are sadly being prioritised ahead of action for Londoners or the UK.” It has been reported that nearly £2 million has been donated to the Tory Party by Russian linked individuals since PM Boris Johnson took office in 2019, following an investigation by The Sunday Mirror.

The investigation claims that almost a quarter of the ministers who attend cabinet have accepted donations from just three well-connected ex-Russians.

‘Lying builder’ sentenced over fire safety windows

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has prosecuted a builder from Romford, after saying he lied about installing fireproof windows in a block of flats in Walworth.

Trading Standard officers said Valeriu Sandu, of Valmic Properties Limited, told council officers that three separate bedroom windows at Penton Place were 90-minute fire-rated when they were not.

Sandu was sentenced to two fraud offences, receiving twelve months imprisonment for each at the Inner London Crown Court in January.

However, the sentence was suspended for fifteen months because the judge took into account his early guilty plea and personal circumstances.

Sandu was also sentenced to 70 hours unpaid work and fined of £10,000.

“The horror of Grenfell reminded us once again of the importance of prioritising fire safety,” said Cllr Darren Merrill.

“In this context, it is incomprehensible that a builder would fail in his basic duties to keep people safe, and then lie and attempt to deceive the council about the safety of the building.

“I hope that our prosecution and court result serve as a stark warning to anyone seeking to put personal gain before the safety of others, by ignoring important fire safety regulations,” he added.

“I am pleased that thanks to our Building Control and Trading Standards teams, Mr Sandu was punished for his crimes.”

All windows fitted on council properties need at least-60 minutes fire resistance to meet current building regulations.

Two emails from Sandu were mentioned by Southwark Council’s prosecution, which they said contained deliberately false information and demands for quick payment.

The first the court heard included a fake manufacturer’s invoice for the fire rated windows. It said they had been 'supplied, delivered and were 90-minute fire rated'.

Yet, during a site inspection, a council Building Control officer questioned the fire resistance of the windows, as they had air vents in the frames that provide a path for fire and smoke.

A second fake email was forwarded

by Sandu supposedly from the window manufacturers in which he claimed sealant could be used to resolve the issue.

This raised the suspicions of council officers who contacted the alleged window manufacturer.

They responded that both emails were bogus and the matter was referred to trading standards.

Mr Coyle highlighted a contradiction between the government’s tough response to Russia over Ukraine and their loose oversight of London.

“Johnson is in desperate water as he tries to dodge responsibility for attending unlawful parties in his own home, but he cannot tackle Putin’s Russia attacking Ukraine without ending the masses of Russian funds pouring into the UK.” Russia’s ultra-rich have brought up so much of wealthy areas like Belgravia in Central London that they have gained the monikers “Londongrad” or “Red Square.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan called for a foreign-owned property register on Monday to reveal who owns what across the capital.

He said: "Londoners deserve to know the identity of those that own property in their city, and we have waited long enough for the Government to do the right thing and fulfil its commitments."

In London, 85,451 property titles are held by foreign individuals or companies, as per figures by The Centre for Public Data.

Now's your chance.

Transport for London (TfL) has brought in the new double-decker buses on the 63 route, which runs from Honor Oak through Peckham, Old Kent Road, Elephant and Castle and Blackfriars, before crossing the river and ending up at King's Cross.

In a sign of the times, the buses have USB chargers, and phone holders on the backs of seats, as well as skylights on the upper deck for "a more open feel".

Passengers will also be able to check which Tube or Overground line is

delayed or not running that day, with real-time travel updates provided on signs onboard the new buses.

The buses are also more accessible, with larger wheelchair and buggy areas downstairs.

London currently has 650 electric buses. All new buses in the capital are meant to be electric and TfL has said that the entire fleet will run on electricity by 2034 at the latest.

Seb Dance, London's deputy mayor for transport, said: "It's great to see the introduction of this cleaner, safer and 100 per cent electric bus fleet on route 63. As ridership levels on the route return close to pre-pandemic levels, these new buses will play a significant role in encouraging Londoners back onto our bus

network."

Dance said that Londoners will not get more of these buses if TfL doesn't get a new transport deal from the government - with the current arrangement set to run out again on Friday (February 18).

He added: "Investing in these new buses and the wider network is now more important than ever - to both encourage sustainable travel and to support the capital's recovery from the pandemic. The reality is that without a long-term funding deal, innovation like this on our buses and across the capital's entire transport network is at risk of stalling; disrupting services, putting jobs at risk and stifling the economic recovery of London and the country."

Stress and distress in the Bourgeois world Louise Bourgeois: The Woven Child is an exhibition of the artist’s work created in the last years of her life, but only artwork that she made with fabrics and textiles, which often, conversely, actually related right back to her childhood and early family life and career, writes Michael Holland.

Bourgeois saved dresses and underwear throughout her life and in the mid-1990s began using them in her art.

She said they were as ‘significant as the pages of her diary in their ability to hold the memory of people, places and events’.

The ‘Pole’ pieces display the garments suspended from cattle bones on metal sculptures with the words: ‘Seamstress, Mistress, Distress, Stress’. The words reference her family history and its impact on her.

Though she was never connected to a specific art movement there are nods towards Abstract and Surrealism, and she was adored by the Feminist Art movement. In fact, 95% of the visitors when I attended were women, while about 99% of the artworks related to women.

The exhibition title comes from how fabric and domesticity and family is important to her work; she saw the

needle as something that repaired damage in all its forms. The Good Mother is seen surrounded by the cotton reels she is attached to; with the exhibition spread over several rooms on different levels we find women giving birth, couples kissing, women hanging, suspended in stairwells and in the centre of huge spaces; women encased in cages and spider webs, in high heels, suppliant as well as powerful.

Bourgeois was creating art for most of her 98 years. It is not always comfortable viewing but it is always interesting, and there is no denying that it comes from a place within her that needs an outlet to be seen and heard.

This was my first experience of Ms Day but I’m very late to this party as she has been either on a stage or screen near you pretty much non-stop since 1999, so she will be known to millions.

Her play is based on her book of the same name (soon to be a film), and tells Eileen’s story from the age of 13 to 16, which, with her youthful looks, Rosie can play with ease while being at least a decade older. In fact, and quite incredibly, you actually see her age from an annoying 13-year-old to a young woman in the show’s 75 minutes.

Instructions for a Teenage Armageddon begins with Eileen’s older sister Olive dying from a Yorkshire Pudding and how Eileen deals with her grief - Or lack of it. Going to Girl Guides is one way of avoiding her feelings, though her endeavours to gain merit badges adds more stress to her young life.

Her parents separating increases the pain and this feeling of despair is compounded when both parents find new partners and a saccharine stepsister, Lottie, brings hatred into the equation. Factor in her school friends moving away from her moods instead of

gathering round with a collective hug and support, and you have yourself a dire and desperate play.

Nevertheless, Instructions for a Teenage Armageddon is the exact opposite. Rosie Day adds dry humour in all the right places to keep us hanging on as we share her emotional ride on the Growing Up Rollercoaster. Each phase of her life is transitioned by her attempts at earning a Guide Badge, mostly with hilarious outcomes, and snatches of the song Come On, Eileen.

But the ride does not come to a soft stop where everyone gets their breath back, but with a new disaster that comes with her young naivety falling prey to a wicked world. All the dancing and Guiding and fun stuff of being young ends and Eileen has to grow up quick to deal with this new setback.

Instructions for a Teenage Armageddon is a great piece of work by this young lady and the team around her. Not a second is wasted as the lights and sound and video interactions all come together perfectly to show that Rosie Day can write and can act and will be around for a long, long time.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET’S inconsistent start to 2022 continued as they lost 2-0 away to bottom side Billericay Town last weekend – before they went to Welling United and won 3-1 on Tuesday.

Dulwich suffered a fifth National League South defeat of the year after only three previously this season.

Billericay had won only three league games before last weekend – one of them against Dulwich – but took just three minutes to go in front through Femi Akinwande.

Disaster quickly struck again for Gavin Rose’s side when Dylan Gavin made it 2-0 in the seventeenth minute.

The Hamlet were reeling and Akinwande was inches away from adding a third a minute later.

Nathan Harness saved a deflected shot just before half-time as the visitors were fortunate to go in just two down at the break.

Billericay debutant, experienced defender Greg Halford, was forced off with an injury five minutes into the second half, but the hosts remained solid at the back.

Dulwich almost got a goal back with eighteen minutes remaining but the home side managed to scramble the ball away after pinball in the area.

Rose’s side had chances towards the end but couldn’t make the breakthrough as they stayed outside the play-off spots with 37 points from 25 games.

It was a completely different story in mid-week as the visitors went 3-0 up against the Wings through Quade Taylor’s double either side of Chike Kandi’s goal.

Former Hamlet striker Dipo Akiinyemi pulled a goal back with a penalty in the 77th minute.

Dulwich are back at home for the first time in four games when they host St Albans City on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Dulwich Hamlet Women defeated Aylesford 3-2 in their London and South East Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division clash at Champion Hill last weekend.

The away side took the lead in the thirteenth minute when Penny Dellaway finished over Mia North.

More than 15,000 people are members for the 2022 season, up from 7,143 in 2012.

Surrey said: “We reinvest membership fees back into supporting the game in the county, developing talent and maintaining The Kia Oval’s status as one of the premier venues in the world of sport.”

Meanwhile, Ben Foakes has been called up to the England squad for the three-Test tour of the West Indies in March.

“I’m obviously delighted,” Foakes said. “I had a bit of time over the winter with the Lions and found it really useful so to be back in the Test squad going to the West Indies, I

couldn’t be happier.

“It’s not easy [being left out]. Two or three years ago I found it really challenging. Mentally more than anything, knowing where you are and what you’re trying to train and play for.

“With those India Tests [in 2021] when I came in having not played in five-and-a-half months or even keeping in a net, you’re trying to find your feet in quite a difficult environment.

It is definitely challenging but given my situation it is just something I’ve had to try and deal with.

“My goal is just to break it down into each game I play and do my processes that I always have done to be successful. If you get a run it means you’ve done alright and you get to nestle into a bit of rhythm, which would be great.”

Foakes reflected on his problems in 2021.

He said: “Timing wise, last year’s

injury couldn’t have been worse.

“It was such a freak accident and having not played at home before I was really looking forward to playing a Test at Lord’s, so I was gutted.

“When something like that happens you go through so many emotions.

How bad is it? Am I going to be able to get back to where I was? You also feel guilty because you’re not able to help your team-mates out.”

Foakes is now working with former Surrey player Gareth Batty, as well as Azhar Mahmood and Jim Troughton.

They were appointed interim coaches following the departures of Vikram Solanki and Richard Johnson.

“Vik did such a good job as head coach getting the team together and making us a united group,” Foakes said. “Gaz is very much like that so the energy that he’s already brought in the week he’s been in charge is pretty infectious.

“There’s a really good buzz around the place at the moment.”

STANSFELD WERE knocked out of the FA Vase fifth round in agonising fashion as Step 6 Southall went through on penalties last weekend.

Stansfeld took two 50-seater coaches to the game as the away numbers were almost 150, and they were treated to a nail-biting contest.

Unfortunately for the travelling contingent at Short Lane, the home side went through 4-2 on spot-kicks after a 0-0 draw.

Stans goalkeeper Charlie Cottrell saved Lewis Purnam’s early effort before Macey Malyon just failed to reach a low cross.

The Combined Counties Premier North side’s stopper Berkley Laurencin then denied Greg Summersby.

Southall’s Jack Woods fired over the bar with the best chance of the half.

After the break, Ollie Milton couldn’t test Laurencin after escaping his marker before Cottrell saved Lewis Stead’s shot.

Milton did call Laurencin into action as the visitors almost found the breakthrough, but the goalkeeper made an excellent save.

Lenny Farhall was red-carded for a headbutt with two minutes left but the Stans couldn’t take advantage.

And Laurencin was the hero in the shootout, saving from Jake Britnell and Summersby, giving Woods the opportunity to send Southall through.

Stansfeld are back in SCEFL First Division action next Wednesday (February 23) when they travel to Lewisham Borough.

Cardiff City manager Steve Morison said before this game he hoped he would be booed off by the home supporters after taking three points back to Wales.

Instead, the Den faithful took great delight in having a cut at their former skipper.

The nature of the game and one specific piece of action would have only added to Morison’s annoyance.

A match of very dull and very lacklustre football sparked into life in the second half, all from an incident Morison described as a “stonewall penalty”.

After the ball had clearly struck the outstretched arm of Lions defender Jake Cooper from Tommy Doyle’s powerful effort, referee Steve Martin pointed to the corner flag instead of the penalty spot.

It was hard to disagree with Morison.

The Bluebirds boss was also frustrated that Murray Wallace was on the pitch to score the opening goal. The Scottish defender had been booked for a pull-back on Mark Harris. Morison accused Wallace of consistently fouling. His frustrations grew as sloppy defending and handling from Alex Smithies gave away a cheap corner which Wallace headed in from Scott Malone’s delivery to give the Lions the lead.

Jed Wallace – making his first start in two months – and Benik Afobe both saw chances come and go as the goal brought about confidence both on and off the pitch in the home side’s favour.

Millwall’s pressure grew, and they soon made it tell with a second goal. Gary Rowett often gets criticised with his team selection, but his double substitution paid off as both George Saville and Mason Bennett combined, the latter heading in

Second-half goals ruin former captain’s return for his second goal in three games at The Den. It’s that record at home that is keeping Millwall’s season just about alive. Rowett acknowledged that form away from home has been poor with his side losing their last three in succession. That is something that needs to be addressed in the coming weeks if the Lions are to close that gap to the top six.

That was Steve Morisons’ deadpan response when asked about the reception he got from the home fans at The Den last weekend.

Morison’s first competitive return as an opponent ended in defeat for his Cardiff City side.

The majority of Millwall supporters will always have a soft spot for Morison.

But that didn’t mean they weren’t going to rib him on his homecoming, chanting “he’s one of our own” after Murray Wallace and Mason Bennett had given the hosts a 2-0 lead.

Morison was asked if it was the

reception he expected.

“No, they were too nice to me,” Morison said.

Morison would have felt referee Steve Martin was the opposite.

Martin gave a corner rather than a penalty after Jake Cooper had blocked Tommy Doyle’s shot with his hand.

Morison also thought goal-scorer Wallace should have been sent off.

Morison said: “He slides in on [Jordan Hugill] and because we don’t go down and get the foul it’s all right. That’s just me nit-picking.

“He made foul after foul after foul and then he goes on and scores the goal. He’s been excellent for them all season.

“It is what it is. I’m just pissed off I’m leaving the ground with a loss.”

Ballard featured for the under-23s last week and his return to fitness will give Rowett a tough call to make on which defenders he chooses.

It’s a big decision but Rowett would say a welcome one after so many injuries this season have limited his options.

We’ve been here before, of course, but the answer at the moment is yes.

The Lions registered back-to-back victories for just the third time this campaign as they deservedly beat promotion challengers Queens Park Rangers 2-0 at The Den on Tuesday night.

With fifteen games left, Gary Rowett’s side, somehow, after so much disruption through a Covid-19 outbreak and injuries, are only six points off sixth place.

It’s the hope, etc.

This was yet another impressive performance against a top-six side.

If you take out the two games with Fulham, Millwall’s record against the top six has been impressive. They have only lost once against the other five teams currently occupying those spots, taking seven points, four of them from the Hoops.

It has been against sides below them that Millwall have failed to live up to expectations.

You could have been forgiven if you weren’t sure which team was fighting for automatic promotion on Tuesday night, such was Millwall’s strong and dominating performance.

The attacking and the high press was crucial to killing QPR’s game-plan. Mark Warburton admitted his side failed to do the basics right. That was down to how

Millwall played.

The intent to want to win was there right from the very off. Danny McNamara had a glorious chance to register his first goal for the club inside the opening 30 seconds. However, his use of power over placement meant that David Marshall wasn’t called into action.

Rangers arrived in SE16 sitting fourth in the league table, but they did not look like a side that was in the mix for not just the play-offs but an outside chance of getting back to the Premier League in the top two. They struggled in every department. Millwall played with an intensity that seemed to take their opponents by surprise, and the hosts rarely let up for the entire game.

Gary Rowett said this was one of the best performances since he took over.

Still, there was that nagging feeling when the sides went in 0-0 at the break that the Lions could pay for not making the most of their dominance.

There was no need to worry. All the pressure built up from the first half was rewarded within four minutes of the restart, and what a goal it was to break the deadlock.

Jed Wallace was back to his best as he picked out Scott Malone with a superb long-range pass. Malone then effortlessly crossed for Bennett, who fired past

Marshall at the first time of asking to make it two goals in two games.

The visitors were toiling at this point, and one became two on 65 minutes. It was a special moment for Tyler Burey, the youngster who has been close to starting for some time.

Shaun Hutchinson found Jed Wallace and a delightful flick gave Burey the chance to charge forward and unleash a rocket into the corner to firmly take the game away from QPR. Off came Burey’s shirt in celebration, but perhaps Rowett will forgive him his moment of exuberance and the yellow card.

Millwall have often been a tough watch this season, but this was the best they have produced and it was all the more impressive given their injury problems.

Benik Afobe missed this game, as did new signing Luke Freeman, whose season might be over after just thirteen minutes at Fulham due to a torn hamstring.

Oliver Burke was forced off in the 28th minute, meaning the Lions have had a whopping nineteen injuries this season.

At least that gave Burey his chance, but it’s a lot for a relatively small squad to keep having to absorb.

Burey had been itching for more game-time, even knocking on Rowett’s

door to tell him he was ready. That showed big confidence for such a young, inexperienced player, but Burey walked the walk, in a London derby, of all games.

Burey has pace, a lot of it, something the Lions will need to use to their advantage in the next few games. Burey will surely be given a chance to start at Blackburn on Saturday. If Burke is out then his pain could be the former AFC Wimbledon winger’s gain.

The Lions’ next two opponents, Rovers and Derby County, need the points for very different reasons. Blackburn are surprise promotion contenders, while Derby County are scrapping for everything at the bottom of the league after their 21-point deduction. Without that, Wayne Rooney’s Rams would be just four points behind Millwall. The table tells a lie in this case and that will be a tough game against Rowett’s former side.

This was looking like a pivotal week in the season, one in which the top-six challenge could have been declared over.

Instead, it’s two wins from two, though Rovers are the Lions’ biggest bogey side in the division.

But given what they’ve come through so far this season, you wouldn’t bet against the Lions fighting their way to another three points at Ewood Park.

The Lions, who have won only three times on their travels this season, face a Blackburn Rovers side they have beaten only once in their last twelve meetings.

At least that was fairly recently, 1-0 at home in July 2020.

You have to go back to November 2012 for Millwall’s last league victory at Ewood Park, when Chris Wood and James Henry scored in a 2-0 win for Kenny Jackett’s side in the Championship.

The Lions have beaten Stoke City, Barnsley and Coventry City away this season. Their away form is the main reason why they are struggling to stay in top-six contention.

Boss Gary Rowett knows they have to turn things around on the road.

“Sometimes that’s the difference in the Championship. You look at all the teams clambering to get away from the bottom areas and get into the top bits.

“If someone would have said to us at this stage of the season, I think we’re 20 points off the bottom three and not sure how many points off the top [six], maybe seven or eight, we wouldn’t be overly disappointed.

“But because of recent results I think we are.

“So we’ve got to do something about it.

We’ve got to show a little bit of spirit like we did today to start winning some games to climb the league again.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MOVED to within six points of the play-offs after their 2-0 win over QPR on Tuesday – but Gary Rowett isn’t thinking about a potential top-six challenge.

Rowett was asked if the play-offs are realistic but the Lions boss pointed to the injury problems this season and said his focus is on “consistency” and “enjoying” the rest of the campaign.

Millwall have potentially lost Oliver Burke to injury to add to Luke Freeman’s torn hamstring that is set to keep him out for the rest of the campaign.

“I think the way the injuries have gone, the way the season has gone, I’ll be really honest, I just want to enjoy the last bit of the season and see where it takes us,” Rowett said when asked about the six-

point gap.

“Get a little bit more consistency in our game, give people like Tyler Burey [a chance], young Zak [Lovelace] was again on the bench. If I had had an opportunity to get him on I probably would have done.

If we hadn’t had injuries. That’s really key for us.

“At this stage of the season to be 23 points away from the bottom three is also a massive achievement by the players.

“Those six points depend on whether we can get that consistency in the team.”

Rowett praised wing-backs Danny McNamara and Scott Malone for their attacking play against the Hoops. Malone assisted Mason Bennett for the opener.

“We worked a little bit in the week, we felt in certain games, the Preston one, a little bit in the Cardiff one, we just struggled to get enough bodies high enough up the pitch to cause problems for the opposition,”

Rowett explained.

“So we worked a little bit on just attacking with extra numbers, but sensibly. I thought we did that. Our midfielders joined in really well, our centre-backs stepped up at times, and our wing-back went higher when it was on their side. Our forwards played a little bit closer together. Little bits we’re trying to work on.

“I think the problem at the moment is you work on it, do it really well, and then you’ve got to work on it with three different players the next week. That’s a challenge but let’s see how we go.”

Lions not put off by January setbacks

MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett has said the club will continue to “stretch the horizons” in the summer transfer market – but admitted it’s getting harder to “pick up a gem”.

The Lions targeted the Dutch top flight in January but had bids rejected for Fortuna Sittard’s Zian Flemming and Bart Ramselaar of FC Utrecht.

Millwall signed Oliver Burke and Luke Freeman last month, both on loan from Sheffield United.

But Rowett wants to target young, mobile, attacking players to improve the squad in the long-term and with the potential for significant sell-on value.

Millwall will continue to push the boat out with their recruitment strategy.

“You have to target leagues because of the criteria in getting players work permits and being able to sign those players,” Rowett said.

“You’re targeting leagues and players of value all the time because of the club that we’re at.

“I don’t think there is any easy way of getting young, talented players into the building as we found in this last window. It’s a difficult challenge.

“Any opportunity that we can, anywhere that we can stretch our horizons a little bit in terms of what we would normally look at, I think you have to do that.

“We have to utilise any market where there is some value but I think it’s getting harder to find those little places where you can pick up a gem.”
