The MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark was accused of shouting “f*ck you” at a Labour aide in Parliament’s Stranger’s Bar last week after a dispute about Brexit.

When a Tory MP tried to intervene, Mr Coyel allegedly replied: “F**k off and lose some weight.”

In response to the allegations, Mr Coyle said he was “not allowed to talk about it”, as the incident is pending an inquiry.

The aide reportedly said Labour could have been spared its disastrous 2019 election defeat if the party had taken a different approach to Brexit. Mr Coyle then allegedly startled everyone in the bar by yelling: “F**k you! What are the benefits of Brexit?” He was also said to have shouted: “Are you f**king insane?”

The row erupted on the very first day of the reopening of Strangers’ bar for MPs and staffers after it was closed during the Covid pandemic.

Just 24 hours later, Mr Coyle – MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark since 2015 – was apparently embroiled in another argument in the same bar.

Mr Coyle contests this.: “I was not saying all Jews were communist. If they are too thick to understand the tweet, they should not be on Twitter.”

Mr Immanuel first complained to Labour about the tweet in September 2021, along with Sir Geoffrey Bindman QC and Professor Avi Shlaim. But the trio said that five months later nothing has come of their complaints despite the Labour Party’s obligations to complainants.

“Shockingly, the Labour Party has taken no action at all regarding Mr Coyle’s tweet,“ said Mr Immaneual. “If antisemitism was the party's real concern, Mr Coyle would have been disciplined months ago.”

Mr Coyle dismissed these claims as “frankly bizarre.” “There is no substantial allegation to investigate,” he said. “They are not Southwark residents, they are not my constituents, they are not friends of the Labour Party. I have not broken any rules.”

He cited his “proven track record” of combating antisemitism and racism as an MP. A Labour Party spokesperson said: "The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously and they are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate action is taken."

An Equalities and Human Rights Commission report published last August showed that actioned antisemitism complaints involved a maximum of 0.29% of Labour Party members.

Mr Lynch added that RMT was still open to continuing talks with a view to calling off the strike.

Andy Lord, TfL's chief operating officer, said: "It is extremely disappointing that the RMT has today announced strike action, as no proposals have been tabled on pensions or terms and conditions, and nobody has or will lose their jobs as a result of the proposals we have set out.

"The devastating impact of the pandemic on TfL finances has made a programme of change urgently necessary and we need the RMT to work with us, rather than disrupting London's recovery.

It comes as TfL's short-term funding deal with central government was given another extension - this time for just two weeks.

The transport agency has had its finances decimated by the pandemic and has a hole in its budget of more than £1m.

A spokesperson for the agency said: "There is no UK recovery from the pandemic without a London recovery and there is no London recovery without a properly funded transport network in the capital.

"It is essential London receives the sustained long-term government funding that is vital for the coming years if a period of 'managed decline' of London's transport network is to be avoided.

"We have agreed with the government that our existing funding agreement will be extended until 18 February so that these discussions can be concluded."

A Labour spokesperson said last night that the party “expects the highest standards of behaviour from all of our MPs and takes any allegations of this nature very seriously.”

He has been temporarily suspended from all bars in the House of Commons and the Lords.

The hot-headed row comes amid complaints from Jewish Labour members that the Party is turning a blind eye to Neil Coyle’s alleged antisemitism.

In July 2021, Mr Coyle was accused of antisemitism after he tweeted that all 350 members of Jewish Voice for Labour should be expelled from the Party because they are “outright communists.”

Calling Jews communist is a “notorious antisemitic slur” says Harold Immaneual, a solicitor and life-long Labour donor, who raised the issue with the Labour Party.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Tube workers are set to walk out for two full days in March as part of a union dispute over planned job cuts.

London Underground staff have been told not to work on Tuesday, March 1 and Thursday, March 3 by the union RMT. Transport for London (TfL) said the strike action was "disappointing" and urged RMT to call off the strike.

The dispute is over TfL's plans to cut 600 jobs as a cost-cutting measure, as well as other concerns about pensions and working conditions.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A young swan has been rescued from Canada Water Dock after being trapped in a void for three weeks.

The cygnet - Andy - first flew in on January 16 and was attacked by the two male and female swans that already lived there. To escape, it went under a void at one side of the dock and stayed there.

Local residents led by swan sanctuary volunteer Andy Miller started to worry about its welfare and tried to feed it but without much luck. The cygnet came out again but was attacked by the two swans and retreated.

a short distance outside the void, so the cygnet could come out safely without fearing another attack - but this did not work.

Finally, the locals called Swan Support, a swan rescue organisation, who sent a diver - James - to fetch the cygnet out. James went underwater and was able to coax the cygnet out of the void and bring it to safety.

The whole operation took about two hours, with James being cheered on by locals on the bank.

It was looking very thin for lack of food and had some minor injuries, but was otherwise fine. Swan Support took the cygnet to a swan sanctuary in Shepperton in Surrey, where it is being rehabilitated.

But Andy will not be able to return south of the river. When he is doing better he will be released into Limehouse Basin, on the north side of the Thames, where there is more space and the swans are less territorial.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Rotherhithe residents celebrated the 70th anniversary of Elizabeth II becoming the Queen with a Platinum Jubilee ceremony led by Sir Simon Hughes.

The ceremony, organised by local community group the Southwark Park Association 1869 (SPA), took place at the Jubilee Stone by King's Stairs Gardens on Sunday (February 6).

In a speech, Hughes, the SPA patron, paid tribute to the Queen's service to the nation over her 70-year reign.

He asked if there was anyone in attendance who was born in the 1920s - and a "Bermondsey born and bred" lady called Mary Hatch, born in 1928, came forward to lead the crowd in the three cheers for the Queen.

The former Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP bought some roses locally to commemorate the event. It was too windy on the day to attach them to the stone, so they were planted in a nearby flowerbed.

Mr. Hughes later told the News he thought the Queen was "a model of Christian service". "She is steadfast, absolutely committed to serving people," he said.

SPA member Amanda Squires told the crowd about the history of the site, including the nearby moated manor house of King Edward III, the unveiling of the Silver Jubilee stone by the Queen in 1977 and the commemoration of the Golden Jubilee by Prince Edward in 2002.

Southwark-based female Morris dance troupe New Esperance Morris performed several dances beside the River Thames, accompanied by flute and drums, and the crowd sang the national anthem.

SPA secretary Pat Kingwell said that the group hoped that Southwark Council would provide a new inscription for the stone to mark the Platinum Jubilee.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Anti-semitic graffiti has been cleaned off a Borough High Street building by Southwark Council.

The graffiti, which included a Star of David drawn next to a swastika, was seen last Tuesday week morning, February 1, and reported to the council.

The Star of David is a Jewish symbol that is also used on the flag of Israel.

Other phrases graffitied onto the building included "Free Plestine or eless" [sic] and "Right to Return".

Phil Dave, who discovered the graffiti and flagged it to the council, as well as the Community Security Trust, an organisation that supports Jewish people in the UK, said that the daubings

were "infuriating" and "frustrating".

"There are people who are upset by things like that. Luckily I am thicker skinned. It’s more frustrating to think that there are people who live in the most multicultural city in the world [and spray anti-semitic graffiti]".

Mr Dave, a radio broadcaster, added: "The only thing that I find curious is that we don't seem to understand that something is racism... It never feels that anti–Semitism is taken as seriously as crimes against other minorities.

"It never escapes my notice that when you look at the reaction to another minority being attacked... there seems to be considerably more outcry. I find that particularly disappointing. I dare say I’m used to it, I don’t like it though."

Councillor Darren Merrill, cabinet member for a safer, cleaner borough, said: “Southwark Council does not tolerate hateful or racist language in any way, shape or form. We have worked with the building owner and removed the offending graffiti.”

New infections fell some 67 per cent in the borough, from 6,772 in the week to February 1, to 2238 in the week from February 2 to February 8.

There were similar drops in new cases across south-east London and the capital as a whole over the week. New cases in Lambeth fell by 71 per cent to 2,191. In Lewisham new infections dropped by 69 per cent to 1,972. Greenwich recorded a 71 per cent drop in new cases to 1,786. Bexley saw new infections fall to 1,437, a drop of 74 per cent.

In Bromley cases fell 65 per cent to 2,538 across the week.

New admissions at Guy's and St Thomas' continued to drop, with 36 people going into the hospitals with Covid from January 24-January 30, the latest figures available - a fall of about 43 per cent.

Meanwhile seven people died in Southwark within four weeks of a

positive Covid test, the same figure as last week.

It comes as a new study was released suggesting that the Tube is not a "super-spreader" of Covid - as long as people wear masks and keep to social distancing guidelines.

The study, led by academics at the University of Leeds, was done before the rise of the more easily transmissible Omicron variant of Covid, but still claimed to show that the risk of travelling on public transport should be "quite low".

The government dropped the legal requirement to wear a mask on the Tube on January 19, but London mayor Sadiq Khan asked passengers to keep wearing them for their own safety.

Professor Cath Noakes, who led the study, said: "Wearing a face covering can significantly reduce the risk of the virus spreading, particularly as?it can be harder to socially distance in?a Tube or subway carriage at certain times of the day.

"Even though there may be a small chance of transmission by touching a contaminated surface, this can be managed through regular hand hygiene and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth?"

The money, which was promised in a cabinet meeting last month, will be used to buy out leaseholders, to allow for the estate’s continued demolition and redevelopment.

A council spokesperson said the eightyear project was “not over budget” and that this extra money was already planned.

They explained that the council had a gradual approach to long-term projects where funding was released on a stageby-stage basis.

“What we do is every time we look at a new phase, we work out how much money we need and then ask for it.”

“We have no overall idea of how much we will spend,” they added.

The council claimed this phased-based approach is better because survey costs, house prices and funding can change over the years, meaning fixed overall budgets are inappropriate.

An additional £13.2m was also approved to cover an overspend on the first phases of the estate development, which cost £75m.

The extra money brings Southwark’s reported total spend on the Aylesbury Estate redevelopment to £118.29m – so far.

“We want to ensure that council money is well spent and that we get the maximum amount of social rents as possible,” said Jerry Flynn of the 35% Campaign, which fights to ensure councils put in 35 per cent affordable housing in any new developments.

“Obviously we do not object to new council houses. But we want to make sure money is well spent,” he added.

The same cabinet meeting also agreed to make changes to the agreement made between Southwark Council and Notting Hill Genesis, who is redeveloping the estate.

No details were given in the public report about any potential changes or variations to the deal that was first struck in 2014.

“We continue to make progress towards our goal, putting residents at the heart of the future of the Aylesbury, said Cllr Stephaine Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness.

“We want to make sure the partnership with Notting Hill Genesis reflects the new commitments and we want to deliver more council homes than were previously envisaged in the original agreement,” she added.

Others were uncertain.

“We understand that costs rise, particular as regeneration takes so long, but questions have to be asked about the future of the Aylesbury Estate,” said Jerry Flynn. “We do not know because we are not being told. At least not yet,” he added.

An announcement about the changes to the deal with Notting Hill is expected in the coming months.

Dan, who lives in nearby Batwa House, told the planning committee: "This week we were blessed with sunshine and light streaming through our windows on Varcoe Road.

"That light will be gone once Pocket Living has completed their project, the Credon House nine-storey tower.

The Credon House tower block will simply be shrouding us who already live here at Batwa House in darkness.

"We, the neighbours who live opposite the site, have collected 50 signatures representing 50 local households objecting to the

development of Credon House."

Dan added that he thought the new development would make the area overcrowded.

One woman who lives in Pocket Living's existing development on Varcoe Road spoke out in favour of the application at the planning meeting.

Anne said her flat, which she bought at Pocket's discounted rate, had given her an opportunity to get on the housing ladder, without which she might have had to leave London.

Pocket’s development director told the News last year that the company was not worried about the stalled Bakerloo Line extension, which would have run along the Old Kent Road near both developments, as the company’s unusual business model made public transport less of a concern. Pocket’s buyers have to either live or work in the borough that they buy in.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The number of empty council homes in Southwark has risen nearly threefold over the past decade, according to new central government figures.

The data shows that there were 388 empty council homes in 2012, compared with 1,051 in 2021. The numbers have risen steadily over the intervening ten years.

The vast majority of these empty homes are because of major refurbishments on big council properties like the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth and the Ledbury Estate in Peckham, as well as Maydew House in Bermondsey, according to Southwark Council.

The Aylesbury Estate accounted for 611 empty properties, a council report on empty homes from October last year stated - of which 400 had been vacant for more than two years.

Some 96 properties were from the Ledbury Estate, 84 of which had been empty for more than two years.

Maydew House accounted for 135 of the empty homes.

Other homes needed refurbishing or other work done before new tenants could move in, the council said in the report.

The rising number of empty council homes in the borough comes at a time when the council has been under fire for its ‘infilling’ social house building programme - building new homes on existing estates - often with criticism from current residents. Southwark has justified its programme by pointing to the 16,200 households on its housing waiting list, as well as the thousands more in temporary accommodation.

The empty homes are only a small fraction of the council's housing stock, which, at about 37,000 social rent homes, makes it the largest social landlord in London.

Southwark’s council housing chief Stephanie Cryan told the News last year that there were never more than 1.5 per cent of social rent homes in the borough standing empty, although the new figure would almost double the proportion, to 2.8 per cent.

relatively small proportion of the total number of empty homes in the borough, which it has pledged to tackle. Some 7,700 homes are vacant in Southwark in total, of which about 5,800 are privately owned, meaning empty council homes only make up about 14 per cent of the overall figure.

Cllr Cryan said: “The vast majority of empty council-owned homes are related to major refurbishment or ongoing estate redevelopments, particularly larger schemes like the Aylesbury, Ledbury and Tustin Estates as well as those where we need vacant buildings for fire safety works like Marie Curie House. These account for 1,001 long-term empty council homes.

“The remainder of empty council homes is a small number – less than 1% of our 37,000 council homes – that varies day by day as a result of residents moving in and out. These properties need re-decorating or improvements to bring them up to our high standards before they are re-let. We have specific targets to turn around these properties and bring them back into use as soon as possible.”

Pocket Living got permission to build up to 117 homes in a tower block that will reach a maximum of eleven floors on Ossory Road in north Peckham and 22 flats in a nine-storey building called Credon House in Bermondsey’s Verney Road, at a planning meeting on Wednesday week night, February 2.

The group banded together to form SE1 Stories in 2019 after the discovery of thousands of photographs in the archives of Southwark and Lambeth councils. The pictorial treasure trove documents the story of the communities of North Southwark and Waterloo fighting for their rights during the 1970s and 1980s.

“Most of us were from the Blackfriars Settlement Community Action Scheme.

We were volunteers who wanted to work in the community in a sort of political way, on a local level, to enable people to have more power,” Anthony Robertson-Jonas, from SE1 Stories, says.

The Blackfriars Settlement dates back to the 19th century; when Jim Radford was appointed as director, in the early ‘70s, he had the radical idea of not just trying to do good but also helping locals have more control over their lives. “Community action was a big thing at the time,” Anthony recalls.

“SE1 has a lot of council housing and Housing Associations, particularly Peabody, so we focused on Peabody estates and helping them to start Tenants’ Associations.”

Early on, the group recognised the importance of keeping locals well informed, particularly around new developments in the area and the need for more social housing. “The docks had closed, there was lots of empty warehouses and vacant land so developers saw this as a prime opportunity to build office buildings, which is where the money was at the time,” Anthony says. “Southwark and Lambeth councils were very in favour of this and saw it as an opportunity to generate income. The population in central London was declining and with it went the services: schools and shops were all closing but people were still living in the area.”

With this, Anthony and his fellow volunteers decided to launch their

own local press: SE1 Newspaper. “We decided it would be a really good way of telling people what was going on but none of us had done anything like that before. Morley College put on a course teaching us how to do it!” Anthony says.

From 1975-1991, the volunteers wrote all the articles, took photographs, did layout and design, found a printing press and distributed the newspaper themselves. They even used an old shop front on Meymott Street that they’d been squatting in as their office.

“Those buildings were owned by Sainsbury’s -they had their HQ round the corner- so we did a deal with them to use the building,” Anthony says. “It was all volunteers and we’d spend a full weekend once a month working on it. We got newsagents in the area to sell it as well and they didn’t take a cut.”

“We were unapologetically campaigning but we featured local community events as well.”

During the ‘90s, everyone went their separate ways; Anthony moved to Camberwell and worked in housing.

The group reunited when they heard about the discovery of the photo archives and began meeting at Southwark Archives in November 2019. After the pandemic closed the centre, they switched to zoom meetings, continuing their cataloguing with the help of Chris Scales at Southwark Archives. After securing funding from Blackfriars Stories, they planned to put on an exhibition.

The first showing, featuring over 50 photographs, was at Blackfriars Settlement in October 2021. It then moved to Morley College, gallery@oxo and Coin Street neighbourhood centre.

It’s currently available to view online and the group are looking for more venues to exhibit at in future.

“We wanted to make an exhibition that was not just a record of the past but a pointer of what’s happening now,” Anthony says. “There’s still a lot of development in the area. The more you look back, the more you realise history repeats itself.”

Mum with disabled child loses dream home in IT glitch Exclusive

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A single mother of two has been “left speechless” after the council told her she could not move into a new council home as promised due to an IT error.

Tatanishia Miller, who has two young sons aged eight and eleven, one of whom is severely disabled, was told that she could move into a three-bedroom council house on East Dulwich Road on the 20th of January.

Yet, after a week of trying unsuccessfully to get in touch with Southwark Council to find out her moving date, Tatanishia was told that an IT problem had mistakenly awarded her the property and that it was no longer available.

The young mum described the new home as a dream come true, as their current home is so substandard it is harming the family.

One of her sons has brain damage and makes a lot of noise at night.

This disrupts her other son’s sleep as they both have to share a bedroom in her current accommodation on Crystal Palace Road, Nunhead.

Tatanishia said her son burst into floods of tears when he was told that they were not going to move.

“I felt like a worthless mum,” she said.

“It made me cry.”

The IT error occurred when Tatanishia was awarded an extra eligibility star, bumping her up on the council’s housing waiting list.

When they tried to correct their mistake last week, Tatanishia says the council made a second error and took too many stars away from her. This she believes deprived her of another property.

“It must be a really bad system,” she says.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “We do not rely on IT alone to allocate council housing, we check

and verify each successful bid before making a formal offer. In this case, the automated system had incorrectly granted Ms Miller an extra star she was not entitled to. Therefore, when she bid for a property, she was seemingly in first position, when in fact others had been bidding for much longer.”

Tatanishia contests this, claiming that since she works for the council, has a disabled son and is a single mother, she should be a priority on the housing waiting list.

“We wrote to her explaining this, apologised for the error but made it clear that if we were to uphold the offer, this would deprive a household in greater need who would miss out on the property,” Cllr Cryan added.

“They have not justified it at all.” said Tatanishia. “The Council just keeps making excuses.”

She says she only found out about the IT mishap by chance over the phone, after calling the council every day and not getting through.

She has been waiting on the housing list since November for a proper house that can accommodate her family, over which time she has been turned down from four separate properties.

Her current house is blighted by mould, damp and drafts, as well as being far too small for her family’s needs.

“I shouldn’t have to live like this,” said Tatanishia. “I volunteer, I work for the council, I am not in rent arrears. I contribute a lot to this community.”

Tatanisha has lived in Southwark for twelve years.

She currently works as a technical admin team leader at the council, maintaining vital infrastructure, such as lamp posts and bollards.

Southwark Council has been approached for comment about their second alleged IT blunder.

Six cycle hire locations have been named in the planning applications.

One docking station, hosting eighteen bikes, will be based outside the Harris Academy on Southwark Park Road, Bermondsey, next to an existing segregated cycle lane.

The second will be placed on Brandon Street, near Nursery Row in Walworth.

It will have space for more than 20 bikes.

Clements Road, which is south of Bermondsey tube station, is set to get the third cycle hire, with space for 24 bicycles.

The fourth 22-bike docking station will be situated opposite the Blue Anchor pub on Southwark Park Road.

South Bermondsey railway station, next to the nearby row of shops, will house a fifth space for 24 bikes.

The sixth - and largest - cycle hire station will be installed next to Burgess Park, on the corner of Albany Road and Camberwell Road. It will contain 30 bikes.

Two other docking stations will be added on Camberwell Road and

Crimscott Street, although the locations still need pinning down.

The News reported in October last year that Southwark was due to get the bikes by April 2023.

All locations are still subject to final approval by Southwark Council.

The expansion of cycle lanes in Southwark is being funded by more than £1 million in developer money.

Many of the most deprived areas of Southwark have long not had any TfL bikes, including Peckham, Camberwell and south Bermondsey.

“We want to make cycling more accessible than ever, which is why we’re working with Southwark Council to expand the scheme with eight new docking stations in the borough,” said David Eddington, TfL’s head of cycle hire.

“Santander Cycles is a vital part of London’s transport system and has played a hugely important role in ensuring a health and sustainable recovery from the pandemic,” he added.

The cycle hire scheme launched on 30th July 2010 with 315 docking stations and 5,000 bikes across eight London boroughs.

A decade later the cycle hire scheme has more than 750 docking stations and over 14,000 bikes.

Londoners hired bikes on the TfL scheme a total of 10.9 million times last year.

Council youth boss vows not to cut autism services Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has pledged that no cuts will be made to its special needs services for young people, which include autism support, despite approving a budget that saves hundreds of thousands of pounds in the area.

The council is looking to save more than £300,000 from the budget for its early years autism support service, special needs inclusion practitioner service and home education services for children up to two years old.

The early years support service staff work with pre-school children to support their development socially or to help their families understand their diagnosis.

Southwark's budget document said that alternative funding sources would need to be found for these services.

charge of the council's services for young people, was unable to confirm this week where this money would come from - but promised that the services would remain in place.

An equalities analysis included in the document showed that if these services were to be cut, there would probably be an "adverse impact on children and young people with protected characteristics and their families".

Speaking at a council overview and scrutiny committee where the savings were discussed, the borough's Liberal Democrats called for the decision to come back before the committee if no alternative funding were found.

The party's leader Hamish McCallum said Labour was putting services for vulnerable people "at risk".

Cllr Ali said: “The council has a statutory duty to produce a balanced budget, something that is more and more challenging following more than a decade of crippling cuts to funding from government. Our absolute priority is to

protect our more vulnerable residents and frontline services from funding cuts, but it’s getting harder each year.

"However, our cabinet report made it clear that we were seeking alternative sources of funding to avoid any cuts to our education services, including those for children with special educational needs and children with autism, and I’m delighted to announce that we have done what we said we would. There will be no changes to these important services, which I know will be welcome news for local families.”

Southwark’s publicly available autism strategy says that the borough has one of the highest rates of autism among young people in the country, and the number going to local schools is increasing every year.

In the strategy, the council says that there are 1,100 children and young people with autism who are known to local services in Southwark, so a rough estimate for the number under the age of five might be in the low hundreds.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey school for young people with special educational needs is not doing enough to keep its students safe, according to a report by OFSTED.

In a damning summary to the report, inspectors said of the fee-charging Bridge School that "leadership, management and governance are weak. The proprietor is failing to meet their obligations."

The school, which is on the Old Kent Road, does not train its staff in effective or up-to-date safeguarding measures, according to the report by the education regulator published in February.

"Staff have completed recent training in safeguarding adults, but not children," the report said. "Staff at all levels have a poor understanding of the latest statutory guidance.

"The school’s safeguarding policy is available on the school’s website.

It did not reflect the latest national guidance and was updated during the inspection."

Neither do staff have a consistent or agreed way of handling physical situations with students who can become "challenging and violent", the report said. Staff are not recruited in line with government guidance, with some workers brought in without all the checks required.

The school does not have a risk assessment for its site, despite its vulnerable students being near the busy Old Kent Road, with plenty of traffic coming past at all hours of the day.

Inspectors said that relationships between students and "caring" staff were positive, with teachers providing "structure, routing and predictability".

Attendance is very high and incidents of bullying are dealt with effectively.

The school caters for young people with special educational needs between the ages of 14 and 25.

James Nuttall, headteacher of the Bridge School, did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication.

Council moves to stop sending kids in care to the Midlands

Southwark got £1.85 million to pay for a new children’s home

Southwark Council has announced it will set up three new children’s care homes to stop youngsters being sent to the north of England.

The new five-bedroom properties will enable the council to care for kids in the borough, rather than being forced to find them alternative homes 75 miles away.

Fifteen children have been indicated by the local authority as living outside of the borough who could be looked after in Southwark.

“The majority of children in our care are placed over 20 miles away from Southwark,” said Cllr Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, young people and education in a council document.

“We are trying to support more children in care by recruiting local foster carers, and developing more local housing,” she added.

Southwark council currently cares for 456 children in total, with 578 more working towards independence.

“Location is an important factor which needs to be balanced with children’s other needs.”

Cllr Ali revealed that the first new home would be in Nunhead.

“We are looking at provision in Nunhead for five bedrooms for children in care, but with enough space so residential social workers can be on the premises as well,” she said at a cabinet meeting yesterday.

“This is a bit of a tip of the iceberg

because most of our support for children is within foster care because we want to support children and families. But foster care is not always right for every child we support. By having children’s homes, it’s only right they should be in or as close to the borough as possible.”

Placing children near their local area is vital to ensure they can remain in contact with loved ones, friends and relatives, as well as access education, health care and mental support services they are familiar with.

Yet this is not always possible as residential care for children is a very specialist form of care for a small number of children. Sometimes children need to be placed elsewhere as places are not available or their needs cannot be met by existing facilities.

Out-area-placements can occasionally be necessary to safeguard some children from gangs

and sexual exploitation.

“However, placement at a distance makes it difficult for children to maintain relationships with their family and their peers, and for some children placement at a distance can increase risks,” said the council in a report.

Last year Southwark Council won £1.85 million from the Department for Education to pay for a new children’s home in the borough.

Huge obstacles remain to caring for vulnerable kids in the capital, with children from London more likely to be placed at a distance compared to any other region in the UK. A council document reads: “Costs, which are higher in London and the south, have distorted the market with more capacity being available in the Midlands and north where property prices are lower.

“Areas like London have relatively fewer suitable properties available at commercially viable prices.”

Charity for children with special needs launching in Peckham

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk A mother of a non-verbal autistic child has launched a new local charity aimed at supporting parents of children with special needs.

Stephanie Maty, who has lived in Nunhead for nearly two decades, will launch the charity, along with her new book in March.

“After experiencing a hard journey including raising a non-verbal autistic child. I decided to set up a charity,” said mother-of-four Stephanie.

The charity will aim to help and support parents of children with newly diagnosed special needs, especially those who have little or no understanding of their children’s condition.

“I want parents to know that they are not alone. That we are here for them. We can share our experiences together.”

“Knowledge and love are what we need to deal with these special conditions,” she added. “Together we can break the stigma behind any disability.”

The Peckham-based charity will host a monthly play day where parents can drop off their children and have some well-earned respite time. There will also be a speech therapist at the centre to help and support the children.

“I was cut off from the world,” says Stephanie. “I didn't even have time to

go to the hairdresser or get my nails done. I was no longer me.”

One of the main goals was to allow parents to spend quality alone time with their other children, who may feel that their sibling with a disability gets more of their time and care.

“My youngest daughter always used to complain that I spent too much time with my son Steph and was ignoring her,” said Stephaine.

“It made me feel like a bad mum,” she added.

Stephanie has plans to create an after school club to care for children with special needs, yet is struggling to find funding.

She is hoping that Southwark Council will help her and fund the organisation, as so far has had to do everything “without any help or support” alongside working for the NHS. The creation of StephTogether is itself reflective of Stephaine’s own journey, and how she overcame her personal struggles as a mother with a disabled son.

“This is my heart. This is what I always wanted to do. But I was not stable in my mind.”

She experienced much hardship after her son was diagnosed with autism in November, which left her with depression and suicidal thoughts.

“I couldn't work again. I lost my job, my family got broke, my marriage ended. I was not me anymore.

“But now I am better, now I am stronger,” she added.

Stephaine believed her organisation could challenge misconceptions surrounding her son’s condition.

“There is a lot of misunderstanding and ignorance in society. People used to think my son was possessed or that I was a bad mum.”

“I wish someone had helped me,” she said.

Burgess Park dog walkers call for help after reporting spate of ‘homophobic and sexist attacks by one man’ Exclusive

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Three men have said they have been targeted with homophobic attacks - including being punched, spat at and called a f*ggot - while walking their dogs in Burgess Park, and locals are worried police are not doing enough.

The alleged attacks, which were all thought to have been done by the same person, were reported to police over a period of several months from July 2021 to last Saturday, January 29.

Two women have also told the News that they were verbally abused by the same man, with one claiming he called her a c*nt as part of a longer foul-mouthed tirade.

The incidents appear to have come when the two dogs that were being exercised by the alleged attacker behaved aggressively towards people or their dogs, which has led to the alleged attacker confronting the victims, they say.

In perhaps the worst incident, local resident Stuart Meader was walking his dog near the BMX track in the park in October last year with his friend, when the man allegedly walked up to him with his two dogs off the lead.

"As he walked, he was looking at me," Mr Meader said. "He said 'Who are you? F*ck off, you gay c*nt. You're a f*ggot.' Then he punched me in the neck."

He said that he called the police straightaway, but an email seen by the News shows that officers had dropped the investigation by early December, citing a lack of evidence.

"What does it take?" Mr Meader asked.

"Is it going to get to the point where someone is seriously hurt?"

Mr Meader's friend Thomas described the man as "wielding [his dogs] like a shield as he progresses through the park".

Thomas, who is also gay, said that the homophobic abuse was bad, but that he was more concerned about the "aggressive" dogs and the possible harm he feared they could to other dogs.

The most recent alleged incident last Saturday was when a man, who did not want to be named, was walking his French bulldog in the park near the kiln with his partner. "[The alleged attacker] came out of nowhere and spat at us and called us a pair of f*ggots," the victim said. He also contacted the police about the attack.

The earliest homophobic incident reported to this paper was in July last year, when another victim called Harry

was walking his French bulldogs when the alleged perpetrator’s dogs started to attack them.

"I called the guy over and told him to get control of his dogs... he started to get close to me and told me to 'go f*ck in the bushes, catch some AIDS and die." Harry also reported this incident to the police.

The man's alleged violence stretches back several years, victims said - who included two women who also walk their dogs in Burgess Park.

Jennifer, who lives in Camberwell, said that the alleged attacker, whom the victims describe as about 5ft 4inches and in his late 30s or early 40s, screamed that she was a c*nt in March last year.

"I was running through the park with my dog when his dogs attacked me," she said. "I couldn't get away. I asked him to put them on a lead and he shouted 'your dog needs to be muzzled, you f*cking c*nt."

"To scream that at a woman is assault," Jennifer said. She added that she now kept her walks in the park to a minimum out of fear of running into the man.

Her friend Tracey, who is 58, now also avoids Burgess Park as much as possible after an alleged incident in late 2020 where the man started approaching, and extending the lead of one of the dogs towards her. She asked him what his problem was - and he said "you're my problem". Tracey said that the man told her that he hoped she died. Neither Jennifer nor Tracey reported these incidents to the police.

"I was all shaken up... it's been going on for a while," Tracey said.

The victims of the man's alleged violent and abusive behaviour, most of whom know each other slightly from dog walking in the park, are calling for the police to investigate these incidents more thoroughly.

Thomas said he didn't understand how police had not dealt with the issue yet. He added: "The question we've been asking is - should you put in that call? Are you just making effort when you should be running?

But he urged people to keep reporting the incidents. "While you may not get the individual response you want, I think you should report it, so they can see the bigger picture of what is going on."

Officers agreed. A spokesperson for the police said: “Police are aware of a pattern of incidents and are working to identify the suspect. They encourage anyone with information which may assist a prosecution to report it to Faraday Safer Neighbourhood Team, or using reference 3002813/22”

Charlie Grossman, 28, (25.10.1993) has links to Sydenham, Lewisham and Penge.

He is white, about 5ft 9ins tall, of slim build and with brown hair.

Officers also want to speak to Grossman in connection with a harassment with violence case that took place on October 10.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A fire broke out in a launderette in Rotherhithe on Tuesday night after towels overheated in a tumble dryer.

Four fire engines and 25 firefighters were needed to put out the fire, which took place on Albion Street.

No one was hurt but an industrial tumble dryer was destroyed and part of the launderette was damaged.

Firefighters were called at 10.20pm

and the fire was under control half an hour later. Firefighters said they think the fire was accidental.

A spokesperson for the London fire brigade said: “These types of fires often involve textiles that become contaminated with oil, most commonly linseed, massage and cooking oil on tea towels, tablecloths and chef whites.

“Sometimes when materials are cleaned, put in tumble dryers and then folded and stacked, the heat from the tumble drying cannot escape. This can result in a high enough temperature

allowing it to build up to a point where it smoulders and eventually ignites.

“If you are washing and then drying on a hot cycle, always use the cooling cycle on the tumble dryer so it cools down and allow the heat to dissipate properly, before stacking laundered items together.”

This latest incident comes just weeks after firefighters were called to put out a fire in a laundrette in Jamaica Road just before Christmas on Wednesday December 22. It was thought to have also been caused by towels being left in an industrial drier and overheating.

A man has been charged with the rape of a 15-year-old girl in Peckham on Sunday, January 30.

Abioina Dele Lawal, 32 (23.09.89), of no fixed address, was charged and remanded to appear in custody at Croydon Magistrates' Court on Thursday, February 3. He will next appear at Inner London Crown Court on March 3.

On Sunday, January 30, the girl was walking past McDonald’s on Rye Lane. A man started speaking to her, taking her along Elm Grove and to a small green area between Elm Grove and Bellenden Road, where he reportedly raped her.

The attack was reported to police at about 6.30pm that evening.

Police said the girl was being supported by specialist officers.

This attack is unconnected to the rape that was originally reported in Peckham earlier in January – but did not actually take place there.

£250,000 community fund launched for Elephant and Castle A £50,000 per year fund for local organisations "supporting a vibrant and thriving community" has been launched by the Elephant and Castle Town Centre and Get Living, writes Joshua Askew...

The “Inspiring Elephant Community” fund will support projects that work with local residents to increase community connections, improve health and wellbeing, and engage young people in training.

“We’re very excited to support the local community through this new fund,” said Ailish Christian-West, executive director of development at Get Living.

“There are so many dedicated groups that are working to bring local people together which we hope can benefit from these grants and I can’t wait to see the projects we can support.”

Local organisations will be able to apply for multi-year grants of up to £5,000 and a panel of local community leaders which includes members of the Community Hub and representatives from Get Living and Southwark Council will consider all applications.

The scheme, which will run for the next five years, is part of a broader effort to invigorate Elephant and Castle’s Community Hub, which was launched in 2019 as a place for local people in the area to come together for activities and

support.

It was largely closed to the public from March 2020 due to lockdown restrictions, hosting virtual community events instead, but will reopen fully soon.

“With the new hub opening later this year, and the launch of the Inspiring Elephant Community Fund, we hope that local people will have plenty of opportunities to make friends, support each other, and come together in Elephant and Castle,” said Diana Barranco, community director at Elephant and Castle Town Centre.

“The Elephant and Castle Town Centre team has long been committed to creating new opportunities for the community, with £300,000 of donations already distributed to local groups, such as Shakespeare’s Globe, Evelina London Children’s hospital through the National Portrait Gallery’s Hospitals Programme and the Prince’s Trust,” she added.

Many local groups have fiercely resisted the redevelopment of Elephant and Castle, believing it destroys local communities and pushes people out of the area.

The community store, which is located on Peckham Park Road, offers heavily discounted food for anyone who needs it.

“The key point of the BBC interview was to raise awareness about the existence of the Pantry,” said manager and Peckham-local Temi Okudiya.

“People inherently think it is meant for specific people, those on benefits or who are destitute, but there are so many people with empty plates on their tables.”

“So many local families are working, and after they pay bills and rent, they struggle for the rest of the month,” she added.

A weekly shop at the pantry costs a fixed fee of £4.50, yet gives people the opportunity to purchase at least £15 worth of food.

Fresh, high-quality products are on offer, alongside canned and frozen goods.

The Peckham Pantry has seen more customers than ever coming through its doors, since the BBC feature.

“People actually got the message that it is open to everyone, rather than thinking we are a food bank,” says Temi. “When you need us, you can just walk into the pantry and get what you need.”

Now Temi says 60 people on average are using the shop – some days 90 – with thousands of members registered on their system.

Some use the pantry every day, others once a week and more still when they are desperate, said Temi who described herself as having a passion for food and security.

One of the main ideas behind the pantry was to allow people to choose what they need, rather than having foods chosen for them as is the case at most food banks.

Temi saw this as important to

give people “dignity”, alongside the inclusiveness of the shop.

She expected more people to shop at the pantry, due to the current cost of living crisis.

“These energy price increases will hit people’s pockets hard. We cannot help with energy but we can help with food. We are here for people.”

The Peckham Pantry began at St. Luke’s Church in 2016, expanding on to Peckham Park Road just before Covid.

It is supported by the Christian charity Pecan, but has additional funding from small businesses.

They plan to expand the project with more stores planned for the Kingswood Estate in Dulwich.

“We want to open more pantries closer to people, especially for those who cannot travel. Then they can stay in their community.”

Temi was optimistic for the future of the pantry: “We are growing and more people are coming. We want more people to come,” she added.

woman gets diagnosis after waiting 25 years A young woman has finally got a diagnosis for her condition - after waiting 25 years,writes Kit Heren...

Lauren Elvy, 26, has congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG), a developmental disorder that has left her in a wheelchair and often unable to do everyday tasks like getting dressed, washing and eating.

For most of her life, Lauren's parents were given "a huge long list of conditions" that affected their daughter, including an underdeveloped cerebellum, the back of the brain.

But after Lauren and her family signed up to the NHS' 100,000 Genomes project through Guy's and St Thomas' to learn more about rare diseases, researchers found that Lauren had CDG. Although there is no treatment for CDG, Lauren's mother Lee told the News that the diagnosis was "life-changing".

"It's much easier now... We always wanted to know, and it’s given us some peace of mind. It was worrying before because you'd never quite know.

"When Lauren woke up in pain, is it something we ring the doctor about for example? Now we know it's CDG, you have that certainty."

Like many disabled people, Lauren's life has been changed a lot by the Covid-19 pandemic. Whereas before she used to go out to social events like bingo, bowling and dance and drama clubs - and even concerts by her beloved Little Mix - now many of her activities are online.

Despite this, she is still managing to stay active with "loads of puzzles, online yoga and cardio," Lee said, as well as cooking and baking.

And Lauren's diagnosis also means the family have been able to get in touch with CDG UK, who have given "huge support," Lee said. "You speak to people there and know that there are people going through similar things."

Lauren added: “I feel like I belong somewhere now and I’ve been able to talk to people with the same condition. It’s something I’d always wanted to know and I hope other

people who don’t yet have a diagnosis for their condition don’t give up hope.”

The technology and approach used by the 100,000 Genomes project will soon be available more widely, through the NHS Genomic Medicine Service.

Guy's and St Thomas' will be running the service in south London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Dr Rachel Jones, a consultant in clinical genetics and clinical scientist at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “I was delighted to finally be able to give Lauren an answer for why she has the problems she does, after years of

Sir Norman Lamb went to the Nest on Rye Lane in Peckham on Friday, January 28. Sir Norman runs a young people's mental health group, which supports the Fund the Hubs campaign. The campaign wants to give more money for early intervention for people with mental health problems.

Southwark Council launched the Nest in May 2020, and recently became the first local council to publicly pledge its support to the campaign.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, Southwark's deputy leader and cabinet member for children, young people and education, said: “Even before the pandemic, too many young people had nowhere to turn when they first

started struggling with their mental health. Through seeing The Nest’s positive impact on young people’s lives, we believe early support hubs are the answer. "[The government] owe it to young people in Southwark and across the country to act now and invest in early support hubs.”

Sir Norman Lamb added: "The Nest provides the perfect example why services of this kind provide a lifeline to children and young people struggling to get the support they need with their mental health.

“Southwark has shown real commitment in ensuring that children and young people can access early support in their local community. However, this is not replicated across the country. We look forward to working with The Nest and Southwark Council as part of the Fund the Hubs campaign to make sure that all children and young people, no matter where they live, can access an early support hub.”

“We know that many people with genetic conditions which have remained a mystery for some time find having a name for their condition very empowering. The introduction of whole genome sequencing means we will be able to help many more families find their diagnosis, without waiting as long as Lauren."

Borough charity helps parents of premature kids After her baby was born early at 36 weeks last year and became seriously ill, Jess felt very "isolated and lonely" on a hospital ward - but a Boroughbased charity helped her feel calmer, writes Kit Heren...

Baby Caleb developed respiratory distress syndrome, which can be fatal without immediate treatment.

He was on a ventilator and given antibiotics, as well as having to undergo a lumbar puncture.

Because she wasn't in the same ward as Caleb, although she could visit him, and because her partner was only allowed to visit her until 7pm, Jess said she felt scared and alone in hospital while recovering from her own emergency Caesarean section. To help with this, she listened to a podcast by the charity Bliss, which supports premature and sick babies and is based on Borough

High Street. The podcast included the stories of other parents who had gone through similar anguish.

"It made me realise I wasn't alone, that there were other people who had had similar challenges to what I was facing," she said.

Happily, Caleb is now seven months old and has no lasting damage from the ordeal he went through at the start of his life.

Comment The top priority of this government is to save Boris’s skin

he priorities people raise with me in Southwark remain consistent: housing issues, tackling antisocial behaviour and handling tight incomes.

The Government priority in Parliament since before Christmas has only been: save Johnson’s skin.

He told us there were no parties in his house, then ordered a civil servant to investigate the parties in his house, then sacked officials for joking about the parties in his house, then reorganised the civil servants in his house in an effort to pretend there will be no more parties.

The Sue Gray inquiry said: ‘it is not possible at present to provide a meaningful report’ as at least twelve incidents represented a breach of covid regulations and the Metropolitan police have finally stepped in.

I asked the Met to investigate on 3rd December last year which would have prevented the farce we have witnessed, but a dozen parties were had whilst here in Southwark the vast majority of people obeyed the restrictions and made huge personal

The Tory Party cannot claim to be the party of ‘law and order’ or respectability when they have an outright lying lawbreaker in Downing Street.

To distract from the shameful reality of the Prime Minister being investigated by the police, his Government rushed out a ‘levelling up’ agenda which did not include any new funds and ignored our capital city.

There is not even a long-term funding plan for Transport for London (TfL) which means cuts to tube and bus services and the possible closure of the Rotherhithe Tunnel. 43,000 jobs are supported by TfL outside London, with 55p in every £1 spent on London Underground being invested beyond the capital but the Tory plan seems to be level down London despite our higher costs of living, longer work hours, higher housing costs, and some of the highest levels of poverty. Just last week I raised in the Commons the issue of unaffordable childcare for the ‘Chatty Mums’ group in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.

Instead of investment, our

community has seen cuts to schools; higher Tory taxes; cuts to universal credit; rising crime and antisocial behaviour; and neglected public transport. Nearly £1 million was taken away from Southwark families when Universal Credit was cut, and last year Southwark schools lost £1.2 million for disadvantaged pupils.

Frankly, this Government has become toxic for Londoners and the whole country with crime also rising by 14%. After a decade of Tory-led Governments, only 1 in every 16 crimes now reported results in a charge, let alone a conviction under a regime that allowed outright corruption in bids for covid contracts and ignored 34 billion fraud in Government business loans during the pandemic.

Under the Tories too many criminals are being let off the hook. It is no surprise that we see a huge rise in antisocial behaviour locally. I have been working on this issue with local people, our police and the council and will continue to seek results to improve our community despite the worst efforts of the failing Tories for London and the UK.

Better streets, piece by piece but there is more to the LTN jigsaw

omeone wrote to me recently about Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, saying ‘we all support less driving but…’ It got me thinking about the many jigsaw pieces that fit together to make streets better.

Take Dulwich, for example. For years, teachers have organised walking buses, cycle training and ‘safe routes to school’. But it was only when the number of cars on local streets was reduced, by stopping through traffic, that a critical mass of parents changed the way they did the school run. The council’s report from September 2021 shows traffic down 12%, pedestrian activity up 7-13%, cycling up 61%. Interestingly, ‘up to 40% of people cycling through Calton Avenue during peak times were children, a much higher proportion than the London average’. Driving is now less convenient, and walking and cycling feel safer and more possible.

We need to ask our councillors to put in more jigsaw pieces: wider pavements and pedestrianisation to make high streets accessible and inviting; protected cycle lanes on main roads; fair charging for parking to reflect vehicle emissions.

And whether you are a carowner or not, you can help cut the amount of driving in your area: • When shopping online, look for companies that have a zero-carbon policy, or let you pick up. Diesel-powered deliveries are a growing source of pollution and congestion.

• Ask businesses to choose electric cargo bikes for deliveries and taxi services. Check out www.teamlondonbridge. co.uk/bikesforbusiness • Lobby for improvements that enable walking and cycling.

Currently, outpatients and staff have to weave through a maze of vehicles to get into King’s College Hospital, and it needs dozens more cycle spaces.

• Request a bike hangar on your street, especially if you don’t use a car parking space.

• Donate time or money to charities that enable people to get around independently, like Guide Dogs and Wheels for Wellbeing.

• Vote for investment in better public transport across the country, so no one is forced to drive.

Council right to find autism funds but longterm plan is still needed

S

outhwark Council has promised this week that it will not cut vital support services for young people, despite substantial savings needing to be made.

New sources of funding have to be found for these services, which the council is in negotiations over. It is vital that the council provides these services to vulnerable young people and their families as it is well documented that taking action early to help children with conditions like autism and other special educational needs is important in helping them develop and reach their full potential as adults.

But although Southwark has promised this week that there will be no cuts to services, which would affect hundreds of local children and their families, it seems worrying that the council is having to scramble to fund them on an apparently ad-hoc basis.

Southwark has a budget gap of £1.6m, which it has closed from £6m in December 2020.

Savings like taking away funding for the young people’s services help close the gap.

There are about 1,100 children with autism “known to local services in Southwark”, and presumably many more with other special educational needs.

But it’s likely that demand for these services will only increase in future. A report by Southwark Council and the NHS on the borough’s strategy for people with autism between 2016 and 2021 said that “we are aware that the demand for specialist provision is only likely to increase due to the predicted rise in population and rate of diagnosis of autism.”

It’s positive that the council has committed to protecting these services in this budget.

But we need settled funding for the services in Southwark, to give children who need extra help and their families some peace of mind and assurance that they are not being forgotten.

Meet Peckham’s snooker wonder Exclusive

By Joshua Askew joshA@southwarknews.co.uk Connie Stephens, who lives in Nunhead, has reached number 18 in the world at women's snooker. Now she has her eyes on the top spot.

The 27-year-old spends nearly five hours a day playing the sport, in between her job as a teaching assistant and university degree in business management.

“It’s a busy schedule and sometimes hard to manage,” says Connie. “But I always find the time to fit snooker in.”

“I am always on the table,” she added.

Next week Connie will be competing in the women's world championships in Sheffield, with her sights set on winning the contest and eventually reaching the top ten. “I have put the hard work in with my coach. I hope I can at least reach the quarters or go even further,” she said.

Connie has previously been a runner up in an English Partnership for Snooker and Billiards tournament, and is commonly in the last sixteen of most contests she throws her hat in.

Despite her busy schedule, Connie often heads straight from working at St. Paul’s Academy in Abbey Wood to the snooker hall, alongside dedicating her weekends to the sport.

The world number 18 was first introduced snooker when she was thirteen by her father, who took Connie and her brother to the British Legion snooker club in Clapham, although Connie admitted she had first started playing pooled aged just ten. And it did not take long for her to start mopping the floor with him.

Aged fifteen Connie first beat her Dad 4 - 1 on frame scores, with the first on the black.

“Actually he was happy for me,” said Connie. “My dad was glad that I was improving.”

Connie, who “always knew she had good cue action”, took up snooker professionally after she found out about the women’s tournaments, entering her first in her early twenties.

“I have never looked back since,” she said.

Snooker has taken Connie all around the world, with her playing tournaments in Australia, Belgium and even Thailand.

This last country was her favourite as she

said “they take snooker well seriously over there.”

“I am improving all the time,” says Connie, who is now into her second decade of playing snooker. “I have loved travelling all over the world.”

What she likes most about the sport is that “it is a mental game. It’s all about nerves and if you can handle them.”

Connie says she loves watching snookerchamps Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Selby.

"Ronnie’s more offensive and Selby plays a good defensive game. I try to draw inspiration from both of them in my own game.”

She is well known in the community for playing snooker and competes in as many local tournaments as she can.

One problem she encountered is that local pubs around Peckham hardly ever have any pool tables, which means local tournaments and games can be limited.

Throughout her snooker career Connie says she has faced discrimination because of her gender.

“Men think I can't play and I pretend I don't know what I am doing, then I go and pot all the balls,” she laughed.

But things are looking up.

Now Connie claims there are more than 300 professional female players, whereas only a few years before there were under 100.

Connie thinks there are now more opportunities for women in snooker, such as a growing number of contests, sponsorship and increased interest from publics around the world.

“Over the last few years I have seen a lot more women in the game. Every tournament there’s new faces. It’s no longer mainly a men’s sport. Women are showing that they can compete on the same level as men.”

Connie saw a role for herself and other female snooker players in this supporting change, especially through coaching young girls and getting more into the game.

You need to start them young, as this can help them deal with the pressure,” she said.

Her message to any budding female snooker player out there was that there is a lot of help available.

“When I started playing snooker, men didn't take us seriously, but with other players in the game, a lot more girls believe they can do it.”

Caryl Churchill is famed for her plays that leave you knowing you have seen something brilliant, but not always knowing why. A Number is one of those plays, writes Michael Holland.

As London life gets back into the swing of things, Wuthering Heights at The National Theatre offers a spectacular evening that reminds you just how good theatre can be, writes Hannah Kelly.

A Number is about parenthood, about how lies always come back to hurt you, about the relationship between a father and a son, nature versus nurture, and wanting second chances.

It’s surprising to think that one of Shakespeare’s most performed pieces has had so few outings at Shakespeare’s Globe since Sam Wanamaker’s vision to rebuild this classic theatre space came to fruition.

But now, Hamlet, in a Globe Ensemble production, comes inside to the playhouse that bears Wanamaker’s name, writes Christopher Peacock.

The candlelit playhouse and period dress of most of the cast give you what you would expect from the Globe. However, under

Sean Holmes’ direction, the show soon takes liberties where it wants, mixing in modern dress, adding in lines from Romeo and Juliet, and creating a comedy skit to replace the gravedigger scene.

George Foreacres’ Hamlet looks like a melancholic 80s student on a diet of Joy Division and The Smiths. This look then plays out in action with moments of him singing The Smiths’ Bigmouth Strikes Again (temporarily slipping into a Morrissey impression) and graffitiing the set. His natural broad Black Country accent and occasional drifting away from the

many earlier productions.

Paapa Essiedu is phenomenal as the three sons, giving each their own personality. Lennie James pulls us in different directions as he shows real love towards his offspring, but also reveals his terrible parenting that damaged at least one Bernard.

The bawdy Bard strikes again more standard phrasing of the soliloquies makes for a fresh reading of some of the most famous lines in theatre. We don’t see too much of a nihilist’s struggle with his own mind in Foreacres’ portrayal but where he does succeed is when playing for laughs, which ripple through the audience readily throughout the show.

The lighting design, which starts with just candlelight and introduces electric lighting as the show goes on, creates some great moments and images. With shadows cast against the wall and being plunged into darkness for the scenes featuring the ghost of Hamlet’s father. What does dominate Grace Smart’s stage design is a pool in the middle of the stage which is used at every opportunity, notably to signify death.

John Lightbody, playing a younger and more spritely Polonius than we are more used to seeing, produced the most consistent performance from the cast. Slightly camp and sharptongued he brought humour when patronising his children and when

pleading for the ear of newly married Gertrude and Claudius. Unfortunately, Holmes’ production doesn’t want to focus on the relationships between the other characters so we get little in return from Rachel Hannah Clarke as Ophelia who doesn’t get the room to shine or develop chemistry with either her brother or Hamlet himself.

Famously loathed and loved by students around the world, those who struggled studying the text in their school days will be relieved as Holmes’ production makes this tragedy a lot lighter as it plays for a tragicomedy rather than a character study. Running at over three hours, although lighter in style it is still long.

The play’s depth is sacrificed for a more bawdy show; use of modern references and audience interaction are encouraged to create an Elizabethan playhouse atmosphere.

Though a brief glimpse at the plot of Emily Brontë’s novel leaves one in despair, the Wise Children’s company brings this classic alive.

The soul/punk rock musical, combined with perfectly toned dark comedy, takes this gothic novel into a play that I didn’t want to ever end.

As Cathy (Lucy McCormick) sings her closing song at the end of the first half, the whole audience let out an audible gasp, and my friend and I found ourselves literally at the edge of our seats.

The combination of brilliant casting, production design, and choreography create something that functions as a whole. It is almost impossible to find a weak link.

Where one could despair entirely of the selfish Cathy and Heathcliff, it is the victims of their dysfunctional romance that shine as the real stars. The sometimes superfluous Lintons become main characters on their own merit and young Cathy and Hareton provide a genuine ray of reasonable hope.

In the end, true love wins, not in ravished passion, but through hard-won forgiveness.

Bernard visits his father after discovering that he is just one of a number of Bernard clones, which is also a surprise to his dad who reveals that he did have a copy made from an earlier Bernard in order to be a better parent at the second attempt, but is shocked that the doctors made 20 more.

Scene 2 has Bernard visiting again, but something doesn’t match up with the timeline now, or the attitude of this Bernard. Some of us slowly realise that this is another Bernard, an angry Bernard who had been put into care at an early age and had now returned.

Next, we find that the two Bernards have met and it was not a good meeting, with Bernard 2 feeling threatened and unsafe, and Bernard 1 having murder on his mind.

The sons want to know ‘Why?’ The father is more concerned whether their traits are the same as his because he wants to have recreated the first Bernard that he failed as a father so that he could do better this time.

And so it continues, with each scene change giving us either Bernard 1 or Bernard 2 and half the people sitting near me thinking this was the same bipolar character. A third son is introduced towards the end while another spanner was thrown into the works when four people came out for the curtain call after a play involving just three characters, eliciting more conspiracy theories in the post-play discussion in the bar.

Even so, after allowing the play to settle in the mind you come to understand that

The sWEET LIFE IN se16 The sugar-coated stories of Bermondsey empires: Hartleys jam, Southwells confectionery and the curious medicated sweets factory Meggesons

All things sugary may be bad for teeth but they were great for Bermondsey residents. Jam has proved to be a very beneficial way of sustaining nourishment during times of hardship - a ‘doorstop’ sandwich is cheap, portable and filling, writes Debra Gosling.

Before the ‘industrial cleansing’ of Bermondsey there were plentiful food factories in the district, the air heavy with the lovely scent of plums, currants and strawberries. William Hartley was a grocer ‘up north’ who became a jam magnate quite by accident.

In 1871, the breakfast tables of Lancashire were empty after a consignment of jam failed to appear at his shop. Unfazed, Hartley made his own, designing the earthenware pots and labels himself. Twenty years thereafter, Hartley’s Jam factory landed in Alice Street. The residents were ecstatic as previously the site had been a tannery; now life was sweet! The chimney can still be seen but the factory is now luxury flats.

In 1851 Charles Southwell opened his confectionary business in Dockhead, where anything that derived from fruit was made, including kosher jam.

Lemon squash and candied peel used up any glut of fruit. It was rumoured that candied peel was made from the leavings in the music halls but that was not true of Southwells: all of their ingredients were of the best quality. Oranges were a luxury for Bermondsey people with fresh fruit ‘plucked’ from the boats providing vitamin C! Southwells imported the oranges to make delicious marmalade. Risking local rival wars, they produced jelly and blancmange, all bearing the Excelsior trademark.

The Christmas puddings were to die for with plenty of dried fruit, peel and spices; all ingredients that were easily delivered via the river. Boiled sweets were a speciality with lozenges and drops, plus pineapple cubes suspended in apple jelly, crystallised pineapple sweets, preserved and crystallised ginger and lemon curd. In the Fancy Sweet department a French confectioner busily made fondant crèmes, macaroons and fruit ratafias.

The boilers for this sweet production were in the basement of the factory - it had its own private wharf at Dockhead (Springall’s) to load up the prepared goods for export.

Just along the road in Llewellyn Street stood Meggesons, the curious medicated sweet factory that, in its early years, doled out hard drugs willy-nilly! Before the age of central heating, people lived in cold houses

with just a coal fire. Bedrooms were freezing and it was not unusual to go to sleep wearing layers of jumpers, a hat and socks during the winter. Colds, coughs and aches were prevalent.

Before the days of sick pay, nobody absented themselves from their job because no work meant no pay. A tin of throat sweets tucked into the pocket was therefore the only bit of relief and comfort at times of illness.

Established in 1746 by George Meggeson, a chemist and apothecary, the company led the market in the production of medicinal throat

lozenges. In the early years the sweets were opium based, the drug at that time not being illegal or regulated.

Imagine nowadays sniffing a cocainebased powder for your catarrh or taking heroin for a bout of bronchitis!

‘A likely story’ the Judge would say as he sent you down for six months.

Other sweets contained morphine!

Once these magic ingredients were subject to The Pharmacy Act of 1868 the sweets were withdrawn and alternatives were found. Liquorice is a natural substance and was used extensively for both its purgative and

restorative properties. Meggeson’s had a whole range of liquorice products in their tins. Peppermint, an ancient cure-all, appeared in lozenges, along with aniseed and Pontefract cakes. Their sweet flavours were just like Southwell’s fruit products: pineapple lozenges, lemon barley sugar, ginger barley sugar and candied lemon peel. They even produced blackcurrant jam, which is an old-fashioned cold remedy when added to hot water and taken as a drink. Paregoric sweets used to be a school-days favourite as kids dawdled home with a quarter in a paper bag. Paregoric means ‘soothing’, with camphor, aniseed, and benzoic acid making up this delicious cure for suppressing coughs and preventing diarrhoea.

Mothers rubbed the tincture on babies’ gums to relieve the pain of teething. Then there were the chalky sweets sucked to relieve indigestion containing bismuth or magnesia, normally with a bit of mint added for interest.

Really, little has changed in the medicated sweet market.

Meggesons moved out of Llewellyn Street in 1966 but they are still trading, albeit as part of a

large concern owned by Merck Sharp & Dohme Ltd. They still make cough sweets in their Hertfordshire factory and, should your sweet singing voice get croaky, tins of the remedy are still readily available!

The Hamlet were outplayed for the majority of the match, falling behind twice before a controversial penalty decision took the game away from Gavin Rose’s side entirely It was a third 3-1 defeat of the year as Dulwich struggle to get any sort of rhythm in 2022.

The Clarets asserted themselves early on when Chez Isaac forced a sensational acrobatic save from Nathan Harness.

Isaac cut in from the left on to his right foot but could not curl past the on-loan Charlton stopper.

In the fifteenth minute, Charlie Sheringham had a shot from twelve yards charged down by Dulwich striker Danny Mills as the visitors maintained their early pressure.

Six minutes later, Sheringham sent a ball down the line for Dan Imray, whose cross crept across Harness at the near post and there was Chelmsford forward Dara Dada-Anite to poke home from a yard out.

The visitors’ goal stoked Dulwich into life though and they were nearly level but for a tremendous double-save by Jacob Marsden.

Dada-Anite should have grabbed his second just before the half-hour mark but missed with a header from close range.

Frustrations grew among the Dulwich cohort in the 3,334-crowd and that would have intensified had Sheringham made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute. His strike, however, from sixteen yards hit the post.

A minute later, Jordan Higgs – who donned a protective mask for the full 90 minutes – crossed brilliantly for Mills to glance into the net in trademark fashion.

Harness almost had another nightmare in the Hamlet goal when Dada-Anite’s tame shot squirmed under his body at the same end he had let a cheap one in against Eastbourne the previous weekend. But this time Harness recovered to take control of the ball before it crossed the line.

Controversy arrived in the 74th minute when a mere shoulder-to-shoulder between Imray and Dulwich left-back Andre Blackman resulted in referee Jason Richardson pointing to the spot after a second or two of hesitation.

Sheringham stepped up and secured the points for Chelmsford in front of a passionate section of supporters from the Essex club as he placed the ball straight down the middle.

That result dropped the Hamlet to tenth in the table but they responded in their

first of three games on the road with a 2-1 win at Slough Town on Tuesday night.

Reise Allassani and Ibra Sekajja scored in the second half to send Dulwich back up to eighth, a point off the play-offs.

McGregor: ‘Every game now is a final’

Midfielder adamant promotion dream still on despite slump

By Simeon Wright sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET midfielder Giovanni McGregor has admitted that results and performances must improve if the dream of National League South promotion is to be realised this season.

McGregor, 23, has been a mainstay in the Hamlet midfield since joining permanently from Crystal Palace in Autumn 2020 and is admired by supporters as a player who likes to dictate play from deep, as well as deliver dangerous set-pieces.

After playing the full 90 minutes against Chelmsford City last weekend, McGregor spoke to the News about what the side need to do better to get back into the promotion mix.

“Right now the mood in the camp is a bit down,” McGregor said. “We all know our standards right now aren’t good enough.

“We need to get our heads together and go back to usual standards.

“At 1-1 we feel like we were the better team and had control, but they were hitting us on the break too much. Maybe we were a bit too expansive and once they get the extra

lead they sit back.

“They had a defensive game-plan and stuck to it.”

Dulwich top-scorer Danny Mills equalised late in the first half after Clarets forward Dara Dada-Anite had put the visitors ahead.

But second-half strikes from Dan Imray and a dubious penalty award, which allowed Charlie Sheringham to make it 3-1 to Chelmsford, consigned the Hamlet to back-to-back defeats.

Another sell-out crowd at Champion Hill is every proof that the mood among the club’s fan base is as high as ever, as Dulwich embark on a first ‘run-in’ for three seasons

following successive curtailments in 2019-20 and 20-21.

McGregor is certainly grateful for the support and hopes the team can give everybody a memorable end to the campaign.

McGregor added: “The aim of the season is to get promoted and we have a good enough group to get promoted, so every game now will be a final.

“It’s time to push on.

“I definitely notice [the crowd] when I’m out on the pitch, you can’t block it out. There’s 3,000 here every week. Hopefully we can get back to putting in good performances.”

Glebe were able to leave former Millwall striker Jamie Philpot on the bench and he came on to add the third for the hosts at Foxbury Avenue.

The Fish had the first real chance when Jacob Katonia set up Christian Udo but his shot was saved.

Glebe went ahead from the penalty spot through Ainsley Everett in the 35th minute before Lanre Azeez made it 2-0 fourteen minutes into the second half.

Philpot then headed in the third with nine minutes left.

Fisher’s focus shifts back to SCEFL Premier Division action this weekend.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY’S JAMIE Smith said the 2021 season was “good but not special” as he targets all-round improvement this year.

Smith, 21, captained the side in the Royal London Cup and was named Members’ Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.

He also received a call-up to the England Lions tour that shadowed the senior Test team ahead of the recent Ashes series.

Surrey’s professional squad are at the Ken Barrington Centre at the club’s home ahead of a move to the outdoor marquee later this month.

“It’s obviously exciting when you get back into the marquee because it shows the season is nice and close,” Smith said. “I guess everyone’s just looking forward to being back outside and the marquee gives the perfect opportunity for that.

“Not many counties have the chance to have these sorts of facilities especially over the winter. It gives the lads great preparation leading into the pre-season games before the season in April.”

Smith, who made his Twenty20 debut in 2018, was asked if he considers himself a senior player.

He said: “I wouldn’t say so, I guess for me it’s sort of building on that. I think it was a good season but it wasn’t a special season by any means.

“To be more consistent is one of my goals going into 2022 and really pushing myself to be better year on year. That’s how I’ll judge myself, if I have a better year than last year then I’ll be more than happy.

“It was a good season but I’m hoping to improve on that, make it a great season this year, helping the side to as many wins as we can, hopefully in all formats, and win some trophies at the end of it.

“It’s always a very special occasion, a packed-out Kia Oval. When I was last playing in front of these crowds I was 18, slightly new and very nervous. It will be great to put some new skills to the test when everyone’s back in.”

Smith reflected on his trip to Australia

and how he used it to study some of this opponents this year.

He said: “It was okay, a little bit frustrating at times with the weather which meant that match practice was limited.

“But it was a great opportunity to be picked for the first time. Looking at the way they go about things when they train was an eye-opening experience and something I can take into my training routines.

“There were new players, I hadn’t seen them that much, so [he was] keeping an eye of them for when we play them this year just to have a bit more of an upper hand and an idea of what they do, and how I can counteract them coming into the season.”

Lions fan Bourke targets British belt in ’50-50’ bout

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk CHRIS BOURKE hopes his natural punching power will be decisive when he faces Mark Leach in a British title bout next month.

Streatham’s Bourke, 27, and Leach, also 27, from Salford in Lancashire, go head to head for the super-bantamweight belt in York Hall, Bethnal Green on March 11.

Millwall supporter Bourke has a perfect 10-0 professional record and takes on Leach who is 17-1-1.

It is Bourke’s first fight since he defeated James Beech Jr on a unanimous decision at Wembley Arena for the World Boxing Council International superbantamweight title last April.

Leach’s only defeat was against Bobby Jenkinson in his first professional bout.

Bourke feels there is not much between the fighters as both have registered impressive wins. But Bourke believes he is blessed with a punch that can floor opponents as he looks forward to the night.

“I had a good Christmas and now I’ve got a big fight coming up,” Bourke said. “You can’t get any better in England or Great Britain.

“He’s a good fighter, I think he’s had two eliminators. He’s beaten Qais Ashfaq who’s an Olympian and Thomas Essomba, and everyone knows Essomba is a tricky opponent.

“So it’s going to be a good fight. The British title makes sense, he has earned his shot. I believe that I’m above British level.

“It’s a fight that I think people are going to be excited about. It’s a 50-50.

“His two best wins are Ashfaq and

Essomba. My last three fights have been Michael Ramabeletsa, Ramez Mahmood and James Beech Jr. In terms of amateur experience, probably him [who has the better resume] because he’s got Ashfaq on his record. But I don’t think there’s much in it, to be honest.

“Anyone I hit clean is going, I genuinely believe I’m the biggest puncher in the super-bantamweight division.

“It’s just about getting my timing right, getting my sharpness there and executing the game plan.

“I’m just blessed with it [punching power]. I don’t know, it must be technique or something but I just know when I land it’s got power.

“When I was 15 I was knocking out grown men, like three, four, five weight classes above me as an amateur. I feel like I’ve always had it.”

It was all the more impressive given Peckham were missing a host of players.

It meant midfielder Joe Thomas had to start in goal with four potential stoppers unavailable.

The visitors had two new players, Maximim Pouvreau and Hugo Chasseriaux signed from the fifth tier in France.

It was a scrappy first half in windy conditions but the Menace were the better side and Gabor had the best chance on sixteen minutes but the sides went in level at the break.

Gabor didn’t have long to wait for another chance as he showed some neat footwork in the area before firing home.

The home side – who had been unbeaten in 2022 – were reduced to ten men with five minutes left after a dreadful tackle on Tidi Barry. The referee initially produced only a yellow card before upgrading the punishment after consultation with the linesman.

Barry was carried off by his teammates but news later emerged he had escaped serious injury.

Peckham are two points ahead of Red Velvet at the top of the table, but their pursuers have five games in hand.

Town host Borden Village this Saturday. Kick-off at The Menace Arena is 2.45pm.

Oli keen to make up for lost time Winger admits he has felt ‘wasted’ in recent seasons

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT’S CLEAR speaking to Oliver Burke that he wants to leave the past behind and focus on the present and immediate future.

A few times during this interview he makes that clear.

The easy narrative would be the precociously talented teenager who hasn’t quite lived up to potential.

Another narrative is of a player who took risks in his career, and looked beyond these shores to see what was there for him and how he could develop.

Burke has played in Germany, Spain and his native Scotland. It’s not every nineteen-year-old who would have the bravery to move abroad to a new language and a completely different football culture.

RB Leipzig were like a fast-forward version of the football he had experienced in England at Nottingham Forest as they implemented the style of Ralf Rangnick, the current Manchester United manager who influenced Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Burke spent one season in the Bundesliga before returning to West

Brom, the £13million they paid meaning £25million had been spent on him in less than a year. He made 26 appearances in Germany but only five of them were starts in the league.

But he has no regrets about the move.

“Obviously it’s a massive move at such a young age. But I saw it as an opportunity, I saw it as an opportunity to play in a big league with a massive up-and-coming team,” Burke said.

“There was a lot of young talent there so it was a good chance to develop as a player and get that experience in the Bundesliga.

“I didn’t really see the money side of things, I just saw it as trying to develop as a player and me and my agent thought it was the right decision to make.

“Everyone says it’s a massive jump but I do believe the level in the Championship has increased dramatically. Everybody is a top player, everybody is fast these days. There’s obviously going to be a change within tactics and things like that, it’s different countries, different styles of football, different managers.

“I thought it was a good league to be in with great stadiums and crowds, and I enjoyed it while I was there. Some will say maybe I left a bit too early, if I’m

“I tried to [learn German]. It’s very difficult to bond everything together because it was such a busy schedule when I first arrived. There were sometimes double training sessions so it was very difficult to fit German lessons in.”

Rangnick described Burke as “very powerful, very fast and physically strong. He’s good on the ball for a player of that size and that tempo.”

But when he’s reminded of those quotes from such an influential figure in the game he has no interest in basking in them.

He said: “It’s such a long time ago now and it’s very nice to hear those things about you but that’s the past, it’s time for me to get my career back up and running and get my mojo back.

“I’ve settled in really well. I’m really happy to be here and it’s a great bunch of boys as well, they’ve welcomed me in really nicely.”

Burke had played only six times for Sheffield United this season before moving to Millwall. Lions boss Gary Rowett said Burke is the type of player who needs to be given game-time even if he isn’t on top form.

Burke had no doubt that the move to south London to play for a manager

with that idea for him was the right decision.

“I was looking forward to it, I was excited about the fact it was an opportunity for me to play football, that’s all I really care about at the minute,” Burke said. “And just enjoying myself again, I’ve been starved of football and I feel like I’ve sort of been wasted a little bit. I’m just looking forward to playing and showing what I can do.

“It’s important to get a good run of games and a manager that believes in you. It’s always important for any player.

“I’ve had a lack of game-time over the last few years and I think it’s really important for me and my confidence to get a run of games. You know what it’s like in football, sometimes it takes time to settle in with new team-mates. I’m still getting to know how they play.

“For any player, confidence, fitness on the back of playing regularly is always massive, it gives you the best opportunity to play your best football, doesn’t it? “[Rowett] was a massive influence in me coming. He’s a fantastic manager and I think he can get the very best out of me.

“There was obviously previous

interest in me from him at Millwall and previous clubs. It never came around and I didn’t look too deeply into it until recently.

“I think he believes in me and he knows what I can do from what he was saying. It’s just about doing it now, getting my head down and putting the work in.”

Burke had played at The Den before, getting an assist for Forest’s winner in a 2-1 victory in the League Cup in 2016.

The Scotland international is unbeaten in two games in SE16 with his new team. Burke was speaking before the match against Fulham on Tuesday night but was looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere again in South Bermondsey ahead of the clash with Steve Morison’s Cardiff City.

“It was an amazing experience,” Burke said about his full Lions debut, the 2-0 win over West Brom. “The fans are fantastic and it was roaring, to be fair. It was against my old club as well so that was a great win and a great feeling.

“Hopefully there are many more of those moments to come. We put in a great performance and it just shows the quality within our team and what we can do.

“We’re really effective when we put it together.”

PERFORMANCE WISE, this was better than many had expected, but it ultimately ended up being another bad night in what is quickly becoming a nightmare 2022 for Millwall.

The excellent victory over West Brom aside, it’s one point from the other fifteen available in the New Year for Gary Rowett’s men, though their campaign is never going to be decided on how they fare against the top teams.

The Lions actually have a decent points return against the current

top six, claiming draws against the Blackburn, Bournemouth and QPR, while they took four points from their two meetings with the Baggies.

But in their two games against Fulham, they’ve not come close. The reverse fixture back at The Den in August was one of the most one-sided 2-1 defeats you’re ever likely to see, with Benik Afobe’s late strike adding more respectability to the scoreline than it perhaps deserved.

On this occasion, the runaway Championship leaders, who’ve scored an incredible 77 league goals this term, were far from at their best, but the gulf in class was still gigantic.

Unlike the game earlier in the season, Millwall started on the front foot despite Rowett starting with a back five and went close through both Oliver Burke and Maikel Kieftenbeld. The on-loan Sheffield United man saw his deflected cross parried away by Marek Rodak, while the Dutch midfielder was unable to hit the target when he had been perfectly picked out by Mason Bennett.

At this point, Millwall were not only looking a threat going forward but were containing the country’s most potent attack with ease. A few pot-shots aside, Fulham had done nothing to worry Bartosz Bialkowski in the Lions net.

But given the amount of quality that Marco Silva’s side possess in all areas of the pitch, you felt like they could turn it on at any moment.

And on 29 minutes, that’s exactly what they did. Neco Willams got himself into a decent crossing position down the right and found Aleksandar Mitrovic via Alex Pearce’s boot, and the Serbian striker slammed home without too much fuss.

Mitrovic, who has been Millwall’s nemesis over the years, had been kept quiet by the Lions’ back three, but never looked like passing up the opportunity to gobble up his 29th Championship strike this term. To put that into context, that’s the same number the entire Millwall side have managed this season, with his secondhalf goal putting him ahead of them.

The south Londoners had done

well up to then but were in danger of letting all of their good work go to waste when Fulham took control and were going for the jugular before the break. Fortunately for Rowett and Millwall, they held out until half-time, but their resistance was broken just five minutes into the second half when Mitrovic tucked home his second after Bialkowski had made an excellent stop to deny Fabio Carvalho from adding to his goal at The Den last August.

From then on in, it looked a case of how many for Fulham, who had already hit Reading for seven and both Bristol City and Birmingham for six in the last month. Mitrovic should have completed his hat-trick almost straight away, but the pattern of the game appeared to change around the hour-mark, which coincided with Jed Wallace’s introduction.

The Lions had shown very little in the way of attacking intent after their bright start, but Wallace looked in the mood to make up for lost time, with this just his second appearances in two months.

Steve Morison has made a big impact as a manager

Following some neat footwork down the left, Millwall’s number seven teed up Bennett, but the ex-Derby forward’s shot flew handsomely into the travelling contingent.

The rowdy 1,861 away supporters should have been celebrating soon after, but Wallace, usually reliable from these types of positions, looked rusty in front of goal. Burke had shown superb pace and close control before picking out his team-mate, who was all alone, but he rushed his chance and was only able to sting the palms of Rodak, with Bennett not even able to do that, hammering the rebound wide.

Millwall continued to pile on the pressure, but their lack of finishing ability was once again proving their Achilles heel. This time, Jake Cooper’s flick-on put Afobe through on goal, but his poked effort was saved into the side-netting by Rodak, with the away fans celebrating thinking it had nestled into the back of the net

instead.

It looked for all the world like the game would end up going 2-1, but as the half wore on, Millwall were running out of steam and were eventually caught out when Harry Wilson picked out Carvalho and his scuffed effort arrived at the feet of Bobby Decordova-Reid, who made no mistake from close range.

Three-nil certainly flattered Fulham and in complete contrast to the meeting earlier in the campaign, the away side deserved to be within one of their London opponents. But again, the Lions were made to look back on another night of what could have been.

Attentions now turn to two games at The Den, where Millwall will fancy their chances of going beyond the 40-point barrier. But they need to start putting their chances away or this season is in danger of petering out into a disappointing bottom-half finish following so much early-season promise.

What the managers said Gary Rowett:

“We performed really well for large parts of the game. At 2-0 we had some glaring chances and I thought large parts of it were really promising.

[Aleksandar Mitrovic] is a winner, he’s ruthless.

He knows how to win games and make those moments count.

“That’s why he’s probably as good as any striker there’s ever been in the Championship.

“I thought defensively, structurally, we were excellent out of possession. We did that really well.

What you then can’t do is concede a soft goal.

“In terms of a game plan I thought we got it pretty accurate but it’s just those little moments you have to take and define the outcome of the game.”

Marco Silva:

“We started a bit slow in our decisions but then we began to command the game.

“We’ve achieved fantastic scores over the last few games but we’ve also conceded six goals.

“We know how important it is to keep clean sheets.”

Centre-back Ballard, 22, played the first 45 minutes of Millwall under23s’ 2-0 defeat against Ipswich Town in their Professional Development league game at Calmont Road on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the on-loan Arsenal defender’s first competitive action since November 27. Ballard had an operation on his knee the week after that.

Millwall will welcome Steve Morison back to The Den for the first time since he left for Shrewsbury Town in the summer of 2019.

Morison, 38, has certainly been making an impact as a manager.

After their 1-0 win at Barnsley, Morison was applauding the away support when he was barged by Tykes coach Joseph Laumann.

That led to a scuffle in the tunnel as Cardiff players rushed to stand up for their manager.

Far from playing it down, Morison played up the way his players steamed into the confrontation.

“I didn’t see any of their players running down the tunnel to protect their staff,” Morison said.

“It didn’t need to happen. I was just celebrating with our fans like I do with every away game we win.

“I didn’t know the guy [Laumann] was running down the touchline to greet me as I went down the tunnel.

“It was fantastic to see the reaction of our players. It shows how tight a group we are. It always looks worse than it is.”

Cardiff could have rumoured Millwall January targets, strikers

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT believes Steve Morison will receive a good welcome back to his former club – but the current Lions boss is hoping his side spoil the exMillwall captain’s afternoon.

Rowett and Morison go head-tohead for the first time as managers when Morison brings his Cardiff side to The Den on Saturday.

Millwall are in the Championship because of Morison’s right boot, the former striker scoring the only goal in the League One play-off final against Bradford at Wembley in 2017.

Morison was a popular player at Millwall for his no-nonsense playing style as well as his no-nonsense attitude.

Morison scored 92 goals in 336

appearances across three spells with the Lions.

He moved to Shrewsbury Town when he left Millwall for the last time as a player in the summer of 2019 but retired that September.

Morison got his first big coaching job when he took over Cardiff’s under-23s when former Millwall manager Neil Harris was Bluebirds boss. Before he replaced Mick McCarthy first as caretaker and then full-time last November, Morison had led Cardiff’s Professional Development squad to eleven straight league wins this season.

Rowett and Morison have actually been in direct opposition on the pitch as players. And it was Morison’s Stevenage who came out on top, defeating Burton Albion 2-1 in the Conference in February 2007.

“I think it was snowing on the day.

It was a horrendous day, I remember playing in the game,” Rowett recalled.

“I imagine Steve would have been quite early in his career and went on to have a very good career.

“I’ve not come across Steve before [in coaching]. He’s obviously a person that people at Millwall speak highly of because of his affiliation with the club and his career here.

“I’m sure he’ll be welcomed back, I’m sure a lot of people will want to say hello to him.

“But, he’s the opposition manager and we have to concentrate on trying to make sure he doesn’t have a good afternoon coming back.

“I think it’s important you recognise what people have done for clubs.

Everyone would realise Steve was a very good player for this club and scored a lot of really, really important goals.”

Lenny on course for return

has not become any less abrasive as a manager.

After Cardiff’s recent 1-0 win at Barnsley, Tykes coach Joseph Laumann took exception to Morison celebrating with his own fans as he walked towards the tunnel.

Laumann barged Morison and the Cardiff boss responded by grabbing his assailant’s collar before players and staff piled into the melee.

Rowett completely understood Morison’s actions.

Rowett said: “Yeah, I saw that, it’s the sort of thing that happens when you’re a manager, it’s an emotional game. Emotions run high, especially if you’ve won the game in a very tight, competitive match.

“I’ve had a million and one scenarios like that as a manager throughout my career. It just shows passion, it shows people care. It might not be what everyone wants to see but for me there is no problem whatsoever.”

Leonard, 29, had an operation on his ankle in early December and was ruled out for three months.

The versatile Leonard, as well as Sheyi Ojo and Tom Bradshaw are the Lions’ current long-term absentees.

Daniel Ballard had surgery on his knee around the same time as Leonard and is back in full training ahead of potential involvement against Cardiff City this Saturday.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett doesn’t want to pencil in a specific return date for Leonard, particularly given his recent injury history. Leonard injured his ankle in February last season and was expected to return but he ended up missing the rest of the campaign.

But at the moment the expectation is he will be available next month.

“He was end of February, start of March,” Rowett said. “He’s had a few setbacks previously so with Lenny, Sheyi and Bradders we’re not quite so specific with their return dates.

“But we would certainly hope with all three of those to see some action before the end of the season.

“Lenny is anticipated as an end of February, start of March return. That’s if everything goes to plan, which of course it doesn’t always do.”
