Southwark sees largest council tax hike in London

news@southwarknews.co.uk Council tax bills have risen a whopping 36.8 per cent in Southwark since 2017 – more than anywhere else in the capital – a study by letting agents Benham and Reeves has found.

These eye-watering increases mean that council tax bills are on average £300 more expensive than they were five years ago.

A Band D property in Southwark will pay £1,527.80 in council tax for 2021/22, up six per cent from last year.

Yet the big squeeze is being felt across the capital.

Whereas Barnet has the highest sum of council tax paid on an annual basis, with £258.5 million paid across the 146,730 homes in the borough.

London homeowners and tenants now pay a total of £4,993,798,878 a year to council kitties – £1.2 billion more per year compared to just five years ago.

But this still falls far short of what councils need to keep vital local services running at today’s levels.

The Building Safety Support Hub would offer expert help to those impacted by Southwark’s building-safety-crisis regarding their legal and financial situation, alongside providing mental health support.

Southwark and Greenwich are heavily affected by the building safety crisis, each with 71 skyscrapers that have serious safety defects, including flammable cladding.

At least 17,000 people in Southwark are thought to be living in potentially dangerous housing, making Southwark the worst-hit borough by the building safety crisis.

This is followed closely by Greenwich, with an estimated 15,000 people under threat.

Cllr Hamish McCallum, Southwark Liberal Democrat leader, whose party put forward the support hub idea, said: “The building safety crisis is a torment for many Southwark residents who are dealing with tortuous pressures due to the Conservative government’s mismanagement of the situation.

“We are fighting similar battles in Southwark where we believe the council should refuse to work with developers that are not adequately supporting leaseholders,” he added.

A motion to boycott developers or housing

associations that do not support leaseholders and property owners affected by the building safety crisis was also proposed to London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s budget.

Mayor Khan is duty-bound to respond to the proposed amendments when he presents his final budget at Mayor’s Question Time on 24 February 2022.

Any amendments will have to be passed by a two-thirds majority in the London Assembly.

The London Fire Brigade revealed in October that more than 1,000 buildings in the capital had defects, such as flammable cladding, that would require residents to evacuate in the event of a fire.

Measures such as a waking watch or a common alarm system to alert residents if a fire breaks out have been introduced in the aftermath of the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire tragedy that killed 72 people, although these solutions involve major costs, which are often fronted by residents themselves.

In 2009, the Lakanal House fire in Camberwell killed six people, including three young children.

Yet a huge number of problems remain, despite these efforts.

Those affected by the building safety crisis face significant building costs to fix defective cladding, as well as the continued stress of living in an unsafe home.

The Government has provided a £1.6 billion fund to fix the problem, but there are fears the costs across the country could be double that – or even more.

and disabled people, child protection, homelessness prevention, waste and recycling, and road maintenance, continue to face an uncertain future as a result.

Marc von Grundherr, director of Benham and Reeves, said: “Council tax is one of the core costs that many homebuyers fail to consider when looking to buy a home and the sum owed each year can differ drastically depending on where you choose to live.

“Much like our home insurance or energy bills, it’s also subject to change and the average London homeowner has seen council tax bill increases squeeze their cost of living by a further £300 a year in the last five years alone.

“So it’s an important one to consider when it comes to the ongoing affordability of your home, as unlike an expensive

phone contract or comprehensive TV package, it can’t be dodged.”

The increasing cost of council tax faced by households is not the only thing contributing to the enormous annual bill in London.

An additional 150,000 homes have been built in the capital over the last five years.

These new properties have contributed to a £1.2bn increase in the total sum of council tax paid across London.

These figures follow an announcement last week that inflation has surged to a 30 year high, with gas and electricity costs set to climb higher still.

Those living in London already face some of the highest house prices and rental values in the nation, with the capital also home to the highest household expenditure.

Council pest control fees skyrocket by 130%

By Joshua Askew news@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has proposed to more than double pest control charges in a 22/23 budget discussed last week.

This would equate to a fee of £57.30 per inspection for council residents.

Discounted visits will also jump by 100 per cent to £28.60.

Councillors have expressed unease about the higher pest control charges and their effect on vulnerable residents, who are already struggling amid surging living costs.

“Southwark Labour is not listening to residents complaining about fly-tipping, damp or mouldy flats and disrepair in estates,” said Liberal Democrats Cllr Maria Linforth-Hall, as part of her role in the oversight and scrutiny committee.

“That it now wants to add to residents’ woes by making it even more expensive to

deal with pest issues is not only ignorant, but also cruel to those on lower incomes.

It cannot complain about inflationary pressures on people in our borough while adding to these issues as well.”

These potential increases follow similar changes last year when the council hiked fees by 94 per cent.

“A benchmarking exercise with local pest control service providers and neighbouring boroughs with similar characteristics and demographics to Southwark, shows that these new prices remain extremely competitive,” said Southwark Council in a document.

Treatments for rodents, bed bugs, moths and fleas will increase by two per cent in line with inflation.

This proposed hike follows revelations that council tax bills in Southwark have risen more than anywhere else in the capital over the last five years.

The council was seeking approval for the draft budget on February 1.

Postboxes across Camberwell, Herne Hill, Dulwich and Crystal Palace have been struck by the infamous yarn bomber with dashing knitted toppers and fluffy accessories since last autumn.

From baby blue octopuses to acid house smiley faces, (and everything in between), their creative genius knows no bounds.

This is the work of an anonymous Instagrammer, @postboxhappy, who uses the social media platform to share their antics with more than 1,000 loyal followers.

The yarn bandit’s targets suggest that they are from the area, plus one has the sneaky suspicion they might be a Dulwich Hamlet fan.

“This made us smile, thank you for creating such a joyous thing,” said one follower online.

But it is not just south London that is being targeted. The yarn bomber’s handy work has been spotted as far as Portsmouth and Warrington.

“We’ve just moved house and now walk past this little dude everyday,” said one fan. “My 1.5 year old is so delighted with him, we spend the rest of our walks saying “knit knit knit” every time we walk past postboxes in the hopes that we’ll find another one of your creations.”

“We’re on the hunt,” they added.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Tributes have come in to a young Rotherhithe man who died of a heart attack while playing football in Dubai.

Alfie Nunn, 35, who used to play for Fisher FC among other clubs, collapsed while playing at the Sevens Stadium in Dubai last Thursday January 27, according to his wife Becky.

Becky said in a fundraiser to repatriate Alfie: "I am completely numb and shocked to my very core that this has happened. Not only have I lost Alf as the amazing person that he was but have also lost the rest of my life ahead as planned with him, including our wedding celebrations in July and starting our own family...

"He has left such a massive hole that will never be filled and I am beyond heartbroken."

Midfielder Alfie played for Fisher in the 2015/2016 season, making 21 appearances before moving onto Canterbury City FC. By coincidence the two sides met in the Southern Counties East Football League on Saturday, January 29, and held a minute's silence for their former team-mate.

Fisher said that their thoughts were with Alfie's family and friends "at this sad time".

Alfie later moved out to Dubai with Becky, where he worked as an estate agent, while also keeping up his football.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk An East Dulwich man has been jailed for life after murdering his ex-wife a few metres away from their nine-year-old daughter.

Stony Stoica, 44, of Lordship Lane, stabbed 26-year-old Beatrice Cenusa to death on July 23 last year.

He pleaded guilty at Inner London Crown Court and on Tuesday, February 1, was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of eighteen years.

Police were called at about 10.10pm on July 23 after Ms

Cenusa's neighbour found her lying in a pool of blood in the hallway of her home on Lordship Lane.

She was rushed to hospital but died a few hours later. Stoica handed himself into Peckham police station a few hours later and admitted he had just murdered his ex-wife.

CCTV footage showed Stoica walking towards Ms Cenusa's address at about 10pm and running away from the house around nine minutes later. Items including his mobile phone, wallet and ID cards had also been left at the property.

Detective chief inspector Katherine Goodwin, who led the investigation, said: “Stoica’s attack was so vicious that Beatrice was discovered with the knife still embedded in her chest. He is clearly an extremely dangerous man and it is right that he will now spend a significant amount of his life in jail.

“Not only did he kill a completely innocent women, he also had no regard for the fact their nine-yearold daughter was in the next room.

She will have to live with losing her mother in these traumatic circumstances for the rest of her life.

Our thoughts today remain with her and the rest of Beatrice’s family.”

Some locals have raised concerns about the area around Peckham Rye station, which can feel unsafe in the dark. The council said that safety was among its top priorities and all of the lighting around the station was working, other than one that is being fixed. A spokesperson said that men attacking women happened regardless of lighting.

Southwark added that its research showed that women felt less safe in areas around public transport even if they were safe, and were working to "design out" crime and anti-social behaviour in new and upcoming developments such as the one at Peckham Rye. Officers have said this is not linked to the rape that was originally reported in Peckham earlier in January - but did not actually take place there.

At about 6.30pm this Sunday, January 30, the fifteen-year-old girl was walking past McDonald’s on Rye Lane. A man started speaking to her, taking her along Elm Grove and to a small green area between Elm Grove and Bellenden Road, where he raped her.

The man is described as a black male, aged in his 20s or 30s, 5ft 6 inches tall, of medium build and with cropped hair.

He also had a full beard. He was wearing a hooded puffa jacket and black jogging bottoms.

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of rape on Monday, January 31, and remains in police custody.

The victim is being fully supported by specialist officers.

A crime scene has been put in place.

Detective Superintendent Clair Kelland, who is leading the investigation,

said: “We have launched an extensive and fast moving investigation into this horrendous incident and we are doing everything we can to support the young victim.

“I am mindful that this will have a considerable impact on the local community, in particular women and young girls. With this in mind, there will be additional reassurance patrols within this area in the coming days.

“I would also like to reiterate that we can conclusively confirm that the stranger rape reported on Friday, 14 January did not occur within the vicinity of Peckham and there is currently no evidence to suggest that these incidents are linked.

"We would like to speak to anyone who was in this area between 17:00 and 19:00hrs on 30 January who saw anything that might assist our investigation."

Councillor Darren Merrill, Southwark's cabinet member for a safer, cleaner borough, said: “I am shocked and horrified by this dreadful attack; my thoughts are with the girl and her recovery after what has happened to her.

By Joshua Askew news@southwarknews.co.uk Gaps in the brickwork of homes being built on the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth have been filled in by Southwark Council, after they initially claimed the spaces were for children’s art.

Concerns about bricks “falling off” the new-builds were first raised by local residents two weeks ago, who published photos online which showed large white holes in the brickwork.

The council later stressed the gaps were deliberately left there for bricks designed by local kids, following a storm on social media.

Yet images circulated showed that the holes in the facade of the buildings had been filled in.

“We are glad to see that Southwark Council has taken note of residents’ concerns," said Jerry Flynn of the 35% Campaign, which fights to ensure councils meet their minimum policy requirement of 35 per cent affordable housing on new developments.

“We always thought that that explanation

[of children’s art] was unlikely. Now that they have been replaced, people can draw their own conclusions,” he added.

The 35% Campaign have launched a tongue-in-cheek brick designing competition to replace the ones they claim are falling off the new-builds.

Local residents were pleased to see that the bricks had been replaced, although they were still left with a number of doubts over the quality of the buildings.

In response to the council’s filling in of the gaps, one individual commented: “Maybe the contractors glued the kids’ bricks the wrong way around … you see there is always an explanation!”

The council has attributed its claim surrounding the art to a mistake, saying they initially thought locals were referring to the kids’ project, when it was in fact remedial work being done.

“No bricks or brick slips have fallen off.

complete or have been purposely removed by the contractor as they did not meet the necessary aesthetic standards required – obviously these will have been or are being replaced, said Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council housing and homelessness “I can assure residents that the council will be monitoring construction and will be making sure everything is up to our high standards before we start to move people into these homes,” she added.

The children's art work project will still go ahead, the council has said.

Cllr Cryan, who defended the council online, previously claimed that local children had “worked hard” on their bricks and were “looking forward to seeing their designs being made a permanent feature of the home.”

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The mother of Isla Caton, the girl who died of a rare form of cancer last week, has thanked the Millwall fans who set aside their rivalry with Isla's beloved West Ham to pay tribute to her bravery.

Millwall held a minute's applause in the seventh minute of Saturday's game against West Brom for Isla, who was just seven when she died last Tuesday, January 25, of neuroblastoma. A photo of Isla smiling was also put up on the big screen in the Den, with the caption 'In Loving Memory of Isla Caton'. The club sent their best wishes to Isla's family on behalf of all staff and supporters.

"I'm so grateful to everyone at Millwall," Isla's mum Nikki told the News this week. "It means so much, and I'm so proud that she meant so much to so many people.

"Millwall's been there from the beginning with Isla. It's amazing. It's a huge violent rivalry [between Millwall and West Ham], in all the 100 years she is the thing that has brought them together.

"We don't even have enough words to express how grateful we are... we have all been fighting together."

Isla's family was told in 2018 that she had just three months to live.

After she was treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital, her family took her for specialist treatment in Barcelona. Hope arrived when she was told in March 2019 that she was cancer free, but the disease returned and after even more treatment the family finally had to accept that Isla's fight would come to an end.

The family decided to spend their last few weeks with their beloved daughter making sure she had the best possible time. Nikki said that they had a "massive Christmas" and did other fun things like hiring out an entire cinema and putting a 30-foot purple dinosaur in their garden. "We did everything we could to give her a good time," she added.

When Isla finally died, she didn't suffer, Nikki said.

"She was an amazing little girl. She came to do what she did, which was bring people together and give people meaning in their lives... she came from God to change the world."

Nikki said that Isla had given hope to people who were suffering in lockdown.

"She's been the light of their life," she said. "Now we just have to keep on fighting."

Nikki and her family plan to launch a foundation for research into children's cancers. "It's a bit of a taboo subject... until it happens to you, people want to turn a blind eye."

Terminally-ill mum of three launches inspirational fundraiser Harriet is aged just 33 and has raised over £30,000 Harriet with her husband and children

news@southwarknews.co.uk An inspirational 33-year-old mother of three from Rotherhithe has set up a hugely-popular fundraiser for cancer research, after receiving a terminal diagnosis in January.

Harriet Le Compte, whose young children are aged just four, six, and thirteen, was first diagnosed with bowel cancer in May 2021 following a series of hospital visits and fruitless consultations. It soon spread to her chest and upper body.

“It’s so shocking”, said her sister Lisa Hickey. “You always see stuff like this on the telly, but you take it for granted that it is not your family or someone you love.”

“There’s this gut wrenching pain that actually hurts,” she added. “It was the most devastating news for us all as a family.”

Harriet’s fundraiser for medical research into bowel-cancer treatments has received more than £30,000 in donations from thousands of people - all in the short space of a week. One individual donated £2,000.

“We have been overwhelmed by the

kindness of people in Rotherhithe,” said Lisa. “It’s the only silver lining in this terrible situation.”

A massive fundraiser is planned on Sunday March 13 from 1pm at Eltham Town Football Club. There will be a DJ, live singers, inflatables, soft play, food and sweets, alongside a raffle and auction.

Lisa says there has been incredible help from small businesses and even former Millwall players, while locals have generously given donations from their own pockets, valuable items for the the event's raffle and offered to donate the profits from their market stalls.

All proceeds will go to Harriet’s Gofundme page.

“We don't know how much money we want,” said Lisa. “We just want to do as much as we can to hopefully help.”

Lisa says her sister is “such an inspiration.” Despite everything that has happened, Harriet has set up an Instagram group (@cancer_Chicks), which seeks to support fellow cancer sufferers and raise awareness of the disease.

It has attracted thousands of followers from all over the world, with people getting involved from as far away as

South Africa.

“She gave people a boost,” said Lisa.

“This in turn gave her a big boost. It is something she is really proud of.”

Harriet, who went to St Joseph’s School on Gomm Road, was told the devastating news in January, after being hospitalised

by Covid. She had previously been told by doctors on Christmas Eve that some parts of her body were clear, yet the cancer has stubbornly remained in her bowel.

Harriet lives with her partner Dan and their three children in New Eltham.

They want to tie the knot as soon as possible..

“Harriet has three beautiful children and a partner called Dan we can’t believe this could be nearly over we’re going to fight every step of the way,” said Harriet’s Gofundme Page. “F*ck Cancer.”

There has been an outpouring of public support on the page, with hundreds of people “sending their love and support” and wishing Harriet “strength.”

One donor commented: "Harriet, we can’t even begin to imagine what you and your family are going through. This is such a cruel cruel disease that steals so much. We’re sending all our love and strength for the hard times ahead."

fundraiser lets shopkeeper appeal his deportation Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The Rotherhithe shopkeeper who is facing deportation despite his work for the community in lockdown has thanked the people who have enabled him to pay for yet another appeal.

Vimal Pandya, 41, has been through a series of administrative nightmares with the Home Office over the past eleven years, finally deciding to stay in the UK without permission. As we have reported, he has become a pillar of the local community, with the Queen's representative thanking him for his support for vulnerable local people during the pandemic.

But he lost an appeal against a decision to deport him to India in January and was unsure about whether or not to go through yet another lengthy and costly legal process - having already spent about £40,000.

But since then a fundraiser set up by local people has raised more than £12,000 - which should cover the legal costs of this appeal.

"It's incredible, all of this happening

is out of my understanding," Mr Pandya said. "I want to thank everyone who supported the fundraiser from the bottom of my heart. I really appreciate it so much, I could never have expected it."

It comes after Mr Pandya and his supporters gathered outside the Home Office headquarters in Marsham Street and Downing Street last Saturday, January 29, for a peaceful protest against the decision to deport him. Mr Pandya said the protest had really improved his mood after the dejection of recent months. "I'm feeling really good, really positive," he said.

After he was detained by the Home Office in 2021, he had to stop working at Halai General Stores in Rotherhithe and said he was also not allowed to volunteer.

"Just one room is my life now. I've been feeling unwanted." He helps friends with shopping and other tasks when they need him, and is also reliant on friends to support him. "I feel embarrassed... my life is very basic now," he said.

The appeal process could last another ten months, and Vimal said he was worried about supporting himself, and his parents back in India.

"Everybody deserves a chance," he said.

"I firmly believe if I am given a chance, I will be able to contribute."

'Mummy I don’t want us to burn by fire' - mother tells of son's temporary accommodation horror Exclusive

By Joshua Askew news@southwarknews.co.uk A mother and her two young children living in temporary accommodation say they have been left with water dangerously dripping onto their fuse box, despite raising the issue with the letting agent seven days before.

Lily Gohatsbah, who has lived in Southwark for twelve years, first alerted Letting International that water was pouring out of their ceiling onto the electrical fuse box on 17 January.

She was worried about the possibility of a fire and the risks to her four-year-old daughter Eshkol and ten-year-old son Myles.

That evening a repair person was sent to Lily’s flat, who placed a black bag underneath the fuse box - only after she threatened to call the fire brigade.

A week later an engineer came to the house and fixed a broken pipe, which was behind the leak, although Lily says it is still dripping.

“As ridiculous as it sounds, this is what truly happened and shows how I am not being treated seriously in such a hazardous situation,” said Lily. “I am crying to you out of desperation and the sense of dehumanization I feel.”

Lily says that after seeing the bag over the fuse box her son became very distressed, crying “mum I don’t want to die by fire like Grenfell tower. I don’t want us to burn by fire.”

"Being late in the evening and out of working hours, the engineer resorted to covering the cables with a bag, with the intention that someone will be returning

first thing in the morning, which is what happened," said a Letting International spokesperson.

They also stressed that "small drips [of water] were just skimming the side of the fuse box housing."

Whenever she complained to the letting agent, Lily claims she was met with indifference, at times remaining on hold for hours.

In a statement, Letting International said: “Our resident’s health and safety is of paramount importance.

“The building in question was constructed in the 1950s and there are no plans or drawings illustrating the communal drainage system and services.

Unfortunately, tracing the leak to its source took longer than we envisaged.”

Lily raised a number of other concerns with her temporary accommodation, including large holes in the wall, heating that does not work for prolonged periods and a lack of space for her children to play and study.

A pervasive mould problem in the house is affecting her son Myles's health as he is asthmatic.

Lily complained to the council on numerous occasions about the state of her temporary accommodation.

“It feels as if no one cares, even if something horrific were to happen to us in this hazardous situation,”' Lily added.

“It seems to me that the landlord does not want to pay out for the repairs.”

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness at Southwark Council, said: “It’s fair to say that occasionally, some properties do not meet our current Good Homes Standard, which aims to work with tenants and

private sector landlords to drive up standards, because they were let before it was introduced, but we hope that going forward, our standard of TA and satisfaction from residents will continue to improve.

“We continue to increase the supply and refuse to ignore our moral obligation to provide high-quality homes residents deserve. Our council homes building programme is one of the biggest in London, which will see 2,500 new homes

by May 2022.”

“We hope with all of this to ensure families move to a place of safety, warmth and comfort while waiting to find a permanent home,” she added.

Lilly and her children were placed in temporary accommodation at 14 Balsam House in east London by Southwark Council one year ago, after she separated from her husband.

Since the leak started Lily has stayed in a friend’s one-room studio in Southwark, having to travel back and forth between her home.

“I am grateful for what Southwark has done for us,” says Lily. “But I need them to find a permanent home for me and my family.” We need a properly dedicated safe and secure home that we can call our own, without fearing for our lives,” she added.

baby Amina-Faye’s parents jailed for a total of fifteen years - after she died with more than 60 broken bones

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk The ‘monstrous’ Rotherhithe couple who abused their baby girl, leaving her with more than 60 broken bones, and then tried to blame her injuries on the paramedics who tried to save her, were jailed for a total of more than fifteen years.

This sweet picture of the eight-week old Amina-Faye was released by police as the pair were sent down at the Inner London Crown Court last Friday, 28 January.

Benjamin O’Shea, 26, of Dominion Drive in Rotherhithe and Naomi Johnson, 23, of Octavia Street in Battersea, were convicted of causing or allowing a child to suffer serious physical harm in November last after a four-week trial. They were also found guilty of cruelty to a person under 16 in relation to a separate child.

Amina’s mother Naomi Johnson was sentenced to seven years and two months, while her father Benjamin O’Shea was sentenced to eight years and eight months inside.

Detective Inspector Melanie Pressley, who led the investigation said: “Johnson and O’Shea have rightly been jailed for the monstrous abuse they subjected these children to.

“Throughout our investigation Johnson and O’Shea have been steadfast in their refusal to answer our questions.

“Thanks to the expertise of doctors who assisted us in this case, we know the trauma Amina-Faye suffered in her all too short life.

“Johnson and O’Shea betrayed everything that children deserve from adults.”

O'Shea and Johnson's eight-weekold baby Amina stopped breathing on April 26, 2019. O'Shea called 999 and paramedics soon arrived to try to save his daughter's life, but she died at the scene. There were no observable injuries and so the cause of her death was first thought to be Sudden Unexplained Death in Infants.

But a shocking post-mortem x-ray revealed more than 60 broken bones in Amina's body, including 41 identified fractures to her ribs, front and back, as well as 24 limb bone fractures.

Doctors saw that the broken bones were likely to have been caused by continued physical abuse. Some of the fractures had begun to heal, suggesting a long pattern of cruelty.

A police investigation was launched on May 3 2019 and O'Shea and Johnson were arrested and questioned. They claimed that Amina had died because of an earlier visit to the GP and that her broken bones were caused by the paramedics.

Police spoke to medical experts as part of their investigation, who showed that the terrible injuries suffered by Amina must have taken place over a long period of time.

A professor of osteoarticular pathology found that the rib fractures had been sustained on at least two occasions and the limb bone fractures on at least seven occasions. He also found that the pattern of broken bones meant they could not have been caused accidentally.

When looking at Amina's nervous

system, investigators found evidence of a small, healed subdural haemorrhage - damage to a vein between the skull and the brain.

This was also supported by an investigation of her eyes that found evidence within the retina, extraocular muscles and orbital fat showing previous bleeding - but no evidence of recent retinal bleeding.

O’Shea and Johnson were re-arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm on September 11, 2019.

Police looked back through their text and call history as part of the investigation.

Detectives found Johnson made a call to NHS 111 in April 2019, the month when Amina died, where she reported that her baby had been coughing blood.

When the doctor phoned back and told O’Shea to take Amina to hospital, O’Shea did not tell Johnson and the baby was not taken to the hospital.

In later police interviews, the pair both denied injuring the child.

In relation to the second child, who was known to the couple, detectives found

texts between them where they both admit to slapping the child and treating them badly. Johnson said she had slapped the child three times and then only given them water until dinner. O’Shea told Johnson in a text of his difficulty at keeping calm after the child knocked over a drink in a fast food restaurant.

DI Pressley said after the judge delivered his sentence: “No jail term will ever be worth the life of baby Amina-Faye. However, I hope that today’s sentence is a clear message that the children in this case mattered and those who think they can get away with inflicting such abuse will be punished. “ I know I speak for everyone involved in this investigation when I say it has been truly heart-breaking to investigate and Amina Faye and the other child in this case will stay with us all.

“This trial has heard complex medical evidence and various points of law but at the heart of this case and our investigation, are two children. Two children that my team and I have worked tirelessly to get justice for and it is them that I am thinking of today.”

Leighton was sentenced to at least 23 years in prison at the Old Bailey. Ulysses was sentenced to thirteen years. The 17-year-old got twenty years in prison.

Transport for London have put new height barriers at the Rotherhithe Tunnel Exclusive

Transport for London (TfL) is putting in barriers in the Rotherhithe Tunnel in a bid to prevent damage to the 114-year-old river crossing - with delays possible for three months.

TfL has put size restrictions on the vehicles that can come into the tunnel.

But some 450 non-compliant vehicles a day still drive through the tunnel, getting a fine of up to £160.

The tunnel, which is in "urgent" need of repairs, would cost £120m to fix. This project would take a year, as the News previously reported.

In an attempt to prevent further damage, TfL began putting in height barriers on both ends of the tunnel this Monday, January 31, with some

lane closures in place, TfL told London Assembly members. The barrier at the Rotherhithe end of the tunnel will be finished by late April. The barrier on the northern side will be complete a month earlier.

TfL is also bringing in "escape lanes" on both approaches to the tunnel, which will allow drivers to change their route if the warning bells on the barriers show that their vehicle is too high.

The transport agency warned that the works could cause traffic jams and told drivers to plan ahead.

Vehicles that are more than two metres (6.5 feet) high or wide, and trucks weighing more than two tonnes are not allowed to drive into the tunnel.

Drivers of non-compliant vehicles paid out about £5 million in fines in the first eight months of last year alone, meaning the new barriers could cause a significant loss of revenue for TfL in the short term while preserving the safety of the tunnel.

Det Ch Insp Chris Wood said: "We have got a mother that has driven one of her sons to assist in committing this offence; it makes it even more bizarre and upsetting for the family. It's shocking. I have never seen a case like this where a mother has driven her son and others to commit an offence like this."

Julius Capon, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "Nichola Leighton should have known better - now she and her son will have to live with the consequences of their actions."

Leighton became “furious” after ErnestMorrison and his friends kept knocking on her door looking for Ulysses.

When Ulysses found out they were “bothering” his mother, he rallied his friends, armed with knives.

Levi was chased through Sydenham on April 10, before finally being fatally stabbed to death.

The prosecutor, Bill Emlyn Jones QC, said the attack took just 30 seconds.

After the attack, the young men fled to a

red Suzuki driven by Leighton, who sped them away.

The Old Bailey also heard that there were gang associations on both sides, with the attackers having links to the LDG gang in Sydenham, and the targets belonging to Block 6 from Catford.

Mr Emlyn Jones said: “That evening, when Levi and the others came knocking on her door, Nichola Leighton was furious.

“She rang the police about it and told the police that if the boys came back, she was going to batter them. But before she had phoned the police, she contacted her son Tyreese Ulysses.

“The prosecution say that having heard from his mum that Levi and his friends had come round to his mum’s house and were bothering her, he then rallied the troops.”

CCTV caught most of the attack, on which Leighton could be heard encouraging the chasers to catch the boys.

Leighton admitted driving the boys to the scene but denied being aware they were armed, while her son claimed they only wanted to scare off the gang.

Police were called at 4:08am on Monday, 24 January, to reports of a fire at a residential property on Railton Road, which runs between Herne Hill and Brixton.

A 46-year-old woman was found unresponsive inside the property and later pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers attended along with the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service and following enquiries, the death is now being treated as suspicious.

Officers from the Met's Specialist Crime Command are investigating and on Wednesday, 26 January arrested two men one aged 47-yearsold and another aged just seventeenyears-old on suspicion of murder.

Both remain in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Wood, leading the investigation, said: "This is a tragic incident and my thoughts are with the woman's family and friends as they come to terms with their loss.

"A dedicated team of investigators are working to establish the circumstances leading up to the fire and I am keen to hear from anyone who was in the area in the early hours of Monday and may have seen or heard anything suspicious.

"I recognise the impact this will have on the community and I would like to reassure the public that our enquiries so far have found nothing to suggest there is any wider risk."

news@southwarknews.co.uk A major development around Millwall’s stadium The Den was finally approved by Lewisham Council last week.

The 1 billion pound project will contain thousands of new homes, shops and an auditorium, alongside roads, parking, business floorspace, cafes, pubs, restaurants and a new overground station.

Land at Surrey Canal Road, Stockholm Road, Bolina Road and Rollins Street will be affected.

“The new scheme will see over 700 new social homes delivered for families on our housing waiting list and will bring significant benefits to the local community,” a Lewisham Council spokesperson said.

“Since 2018, we have been pushing for more affordable housing to be delivered through this scheme – an approach we have taken to private developments across the borough.

The level of affordable housing in the revised application from Renewal has increased from 12% to 35%,” they added.

Lewisham Council had signalled it would approve the project earlier in the week, but only after certain conditions were met.

A proportion of the 3,500 homes and revamp of the club’s football stadium promised under the decades-long scheme had been under intense consideration,

with Millwall and Lewisham Council contesting land leases.

“Millwall Football Club welcomes the news that the initial planning application for the New Bermondsey redevelopment has been approved, said Millwall communications director Billy Taylor.

“This is a significant step forward for what is a much-needed regeneration.”

He added: “The club hopes that Lewisham Council can now hasten the finalisation of the lease for land around The Den so that Millwall can be at the heart of these endeavours as promised.”

Millwall, Lewisham Council and developers Renewal still need to agree on a number of rental, transport and infrastructure issues before these later phases can go ahead.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan also needs to approve the scheme.

The proposed development will be delivered in five phases, with the first bringing 600 new homes to the area, while roads, parking, business floorspace, cafes, pubs, restaurants and the new overground station will come in the following years.

The combined area of the new flats will be 60,000 sq m in three 32-storey tower blocks of 200 flats each, 200 of which will be deemed affordable housing.

“With placemaking at the heart of our proposals, New Bermondsey will be a health and wellbeing oriented mixed-use neighbourhood, said Vincent Lin, director of Studio Egret West, the architects behind the project. “Improved transport

connections, as well as pedestrian and cycle-friendly routes, are animated by sports, culture, retail and employment spaces that blend seamlessly into the public realm.

This provides an opportunity to reimagine this site as a vibrant and attractive place to live, work and play in,” he added.

Several planning objections have been made to the council, surrounding potential impacts on the Hatcham Conservation Area, air quality and access to daylight and sunlight for neighbouring properties.

“The harm to these properties is considered to be outweighed by public benefit including over 1000 new affordable homes across the scheme, and provision of new transport infrastructure,” said the council.

Developer gets green light for big housing project on Old Kent Road

by Southwark Council as the developer of 700 new homes on the Tustin Estate on Old Kent Road.

The multi-million-pound scheme will include replacing all 200 existing council homes on the estate, plus an additional 220 council homes, 50 shared equity properties and a further 220 homes for sale, alongside a central park, several refurbishments and at least 1,800 sqm of commercial floorspace.

Construction will begin towards the end of 2022 and is planned to be completed in summer 2028.

“We are delighted to welcome Linkcity to the Tustin Estate and look forward to working with them and our residents to build quality new council homes,” said Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness.

“Southwark has one of the most ambitious council house building programmes in the country and the work on Tustin Estate will not only help us reach our aim of providing new housing but also enhance the estate for current residents,” she added.

Linkcity will create around 200 new homes to rehouse current tenants of the estate in the initial phase of development.

A further 440 homes will be built

Replacing 200 existing council homes with another 220 to come over the next three years across two additional phases, with at least half of these designated as affordable housing.

Tom Jackson, development director at Linkcity said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Southwark Council and the Tustin Estate residents to deliver the first project on Pagabo’s Developer Led

Framework. It’s a great opportunity to provide social and economic value through local employment and education opportunities, as well as new homes for this thriving community.”

Linkcity, which is part of the French Bouygues Group, is behind several large-scale developments in London, such as Hounslow House in Newham,

Westminster University Technical College and Canning Town’s Hallsville Quarter.

Development of the Tustin Estate has been broadly supported by residents, who voted in favour of redeveloping the area by a large majority in 2020.

“There was extensive consultation and an independent vote was undertaken

where residents had five different options to choose from, one of which was to refurbish each home. Only eight per cent of residents voted for the option to refurbish the homes,” said Cllr Cryan.

“There was then a final ballot on the option to demolish and replace the 202 homes and 87 per cent of residents voted for this,” she added.

‘Council fails to spend any of £25m climate fund’

£25,000,000 was set aside from the council’s budget to put towards investment projects that would help tackle climate change over the decade.

The council had planned to spend the finances between 2021 and 2030, but enquiries from councilors showed none of this money has been spent in almost a year.

“Southwark Labour do not understand that we have to act urgently to tackle the climate emergency and have relied on us to force them to go greener faster,” said Liberal Democrat Cllr Victor Chamberlain.

“Spending on the emergency or dedicating money to relevant projects has to be an urgent priority and no-one can afford for the council to sit on large funds for years.”

These claims by the Lib Dems were fiercely rebuffed by the council.

“Once again, the Lib Dems have completely missed the big picture and are choosing to ignore the council’s record of delivery on climate change,” said Cllr Helen Dennis, cabinet member for the climate emergency and sustainable development.

residents’ anger as dangerous levels of lead found on estate

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Residents of a Herne Hill estate were shocked to be told there were dangerous levels of lead in drinking water supplied to some of the flats.

Tests carried out by Lambeth Council at Dorchester Court in Herne Hill showed that the amount of lead in the drinking water in two flats was three times as high as regulations allow, according to the London Renters Union.

An email seen by the News from the estate's management company told residents not to drink water from the tap, saying they would deliver drinking water instead.

The estate, which is owned by Manaquel, a company controlled by multimillionaire Heinrich Feldman, has suffered structural problems, hot water outages, and vermin, as the News has previously reported.

The London Renters Union said temporary boilers saw residents taken to hospital.

Lambeth Council have slapped an improvement notice on Manaquel, meaning they have to fix broken pipes and replace broken windows with double glazing.

Dorchester Court resident Cara said: “How many more near misses is it going to take before we see these dangerous conditions sorted out once and for all? Residents are sick and tired of having to fight Manaquel over a landlord’s basic legal duty to provide us with safe, warm homes.

“It’s been great to see the council issue an improvement notice, but it feels like different parts of the council are failing to communicate.”

“Lambeth Council is doing all it can to support residents at Dorchester Court which is a privately-owned estate,” said a council spokesperson.

“Following complaints raised by tenants and leaseholders about living conditions on the estate, an inspection by the council found traces of lead in the water supplied to two flats.

Concern over ‘plans to close hospital nursery’ at Maudsley Exclusive

“The council has been liaising with the freeholder, and across agencies including Thames Water, in managing the situation. We have ensured residents have been supplied with safe drinking water, and we have given the occupants advice about how to stay safe while we carry out further testing.

"There are no plans to take enforcement action at this stage.”

A spokesperson for Property Partners, which manages the estate for Manaquel, said that the

replacement of the estate's lead pipes was part of a wider planning application that Lambeth was still considering.

They added that the council was continuing to test more flats and would decide if any short-term measures were required.

The spokesperson said: "It is important to note that four flats have been tested to date, two passed and two failed, one of which was vacant meaning there was standing water in the pipes."

Covid cases rise steeply again

Cedar House Nursery, in Camberwell which has provided care for the children of NHS staff at the South London and Maudsley Trust (SLAM) for decades, is due to close in 2023 when the existing building is demolished.

Yet campaigners are concerned about what child care will be provided until a new facility opens in 2028, claiming there is no provider to run the nursery in this interim period.

“In the current post-pandemic London climate, where high early years childcare costs provide an often insurmountable barrier for women returning to work, and many NHS posts already vacant, we need to fight to keep an affordable, high quality and long-standing nursery provider available to NHS staff,” said one campaigner.

“We should be opening many more of these provisions, not closing them,” they added.

A petition to save the nursery has been signed more than one thousand times.

SLAM has tried to reassure staff that care of their children will not be disrupted.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk New cases of Covid-19 are rising sharply again in Southwark, after weeks when infections appeared to be dropping off.

Some 6,772 people tested positive for the virus in Southwark in the week from January 26-February 1, government figures show. That's an increase of nearly 178 per cent on the previous week.

Before that there had been months of declining new cases in Southwark and across London, following the sharp spike in December driven by the fast spread of the Omicron variant.

Southwark's rise in new cases mirrored the story across south-east London and the rest of the capital, with infections going up the most in Newham, which recorded a weekly increase of more than 260 per cent.

Out of the south-east London boroughs, Lambeth had the most new cases, with 7,591 and the biggest

Peckham bids farewell to much-loved policeman A treasured member of the community, PC John Ajagun, has hung up his hat to pursue his dreams of studying statistics, having loyally served as a police officer in Peckham for decades, writes Joshua Askew...

The “big-hearted and always smiling” 62-year-old is returning to his home country of Nigeria to do a PhD in Statistics.

“I am very sad to go,” said John.

“Peckham is my second home, we are a big big family here. But that’s destiny, that’s life, we all come and go.”

John, pictured with colleagues, arrived in London during the 1980s, as a young man in his late twenties.

During his twenty years of service at Peckham Police Station, he has gone above and beyond the call of duty to serve the community.

“We felt safe with John around,” said Lucy Cope, who worked closely with John through her ‘Mother’s Against Guns’ campaign. “I had the privilege to know him so so many years. He’s an absolute credit to the Metropolitan Police and our community.”

Even when off duty, John answers phone calls from people in need and will check in at their homes to see if they are

alright. He is often the first port of call for locals in times of trouble.

“His duty to the people of Southwark is commendable,” said Lucy. “Seven days a week, if anything has kicked off, he will be there. His phone is never off.”

A “Peckham to Lagos” party was planned for John’s retirement last weekend, where his achievements in the force was recognised by fellow officers and those who knew him.

John has built a close relationship with locals over the years, where they have come to trust and rely on him.

“I’ve known most of the community since they were teenagers. I know what the youngster’s problems are because I

had the same,” John said.

“These are my people,” he added.

Such was John’s affinity with the people of Peckham that he would often patrol the streets alone - a rarity these days.

He recalled an incident while on duty one day where two police officers driving down Peckham High Street pulled over to see if he was alright on his own. Their worries were soon dispelled when several passersby greeted John on first name terms and gave him a friendly

embrace.

“This is my patch,” he said. “I am wellknown around here.”

Lucy seconded this: “John is one of the only police officers who can walk through Burgess Park and no one will say a word. People trust him.”

As a religious man, John said that throughout his career he always tried to bridge the, at times fractious, gap between the police and wider community. Yet he said that over the years this relationship had improved and things were "much better" now than they were in the past.

John is a regular attendee at events in the local area as the acting police officer, often helping out or lending an ear to people’s concerns. Behind the scenes he has helped out community groups, such as Lucy’s Mother’s Against Guns, taking a hands-on, caring approach.

If he is not too busy with his PhD, John says he has plans to use his diaries to write a short book about his time in the area. “I will miss Peckham a lot. I have loads and loads and loads of happy memories here.”

“If anybody thinks they can take John’s place, they can think again, '' said Lucy.

“These are big boots to fill.”

Are our streets safe for women?

W

e have been getting plenty of calls this week about the rape of a girl in Peckham, which came only a few weeks after the rape of another teenager that police originally said was in the same area - but then said took place elsewhere.

Alongside the sadness and shock we all feel at another assault taking place on a Southwark

street, the situation is certainly confusing. The place where the original rape was first said to

have happened was only a few minutes’ walk from where police said the second attack took place.

Officers have said the two rapes are unconnected.

The streets in question - Elm Grove and Holly Grove, which are separated by a small patch of

green space, do not feel welcoming at night, despite being just off bright and busy Rye Lane. People

at a half-aborted vigil set up in the aftermath of the first rape last month said they felt unsafe there at night, especially when the art gallery on Holly Grove turned off its lights.

Southwark Council, while expressing its horror at the attacks and extending its sympathies to

the victims, said this week that there was enough lighting on the streets - and that lighting was

a red herring anyway: violent men don’t need the cover of darkness to commit crimes against

women. With this in mind, the council’s strategy to prevent violence against women and girls focuses on men, rather than the environment.

The exact circumstances of both rapes remain unclear, indeed the location of the first incident is

confusingly still unclear. The council says that Southwark remains a very safe place to live.

Despite all this, and the fact that the two rapes are unconnected, the apparent coincidence of

both attacks first being reported very close to each other and only a few weeks apart is very

LGBT+ Events in south London this Pride History Month

South London will be taking part in the city-wide curation of events, from exhibitions to cabarets, discussions to online talks.

Throughout February, south London is set to host a variety of events across the borough to mark LGTB+ history month, writes Euan Dawtrey…

The month-long recognition of LGBT+ identity was founded in 1994 to celebrate queer history in Britain and across the globe Southwark will be taking part in the city-wide curation of events, from exhibitions to cabarets, discussions to online talks.

Here are some of the best South London-based activities you can get involved in this February:

Rebel Dykes Film Screening – February 4th

Clapham Library is hosting a screening of a documentary about South London's 1980s 'dyke culture', made by the people who were at the forefront of the movement.

Made in 2021, Rebel Dykes follows the story of a group of women who met in South London’s gay scene in the ’80s and became artists, performers, activists and musicians.

The film is screening in Clapham Library on February 4th and will be followed by an open discussion forum with Lambeth-based Atalanta Kernick and Karen Fisch.

Gay Liberation Front (GLF) 2022 Launch Gathering – February 5th

The GLF is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Gay Pride March at the London LGBT+ Centre from 3-6 pm on Saturday 5th February ‘to start the year with lots of Pride, old and new friends and a BANG!’.

The GLF is a radical, creative grassroots movement ‘committed

toward the liberation of all’ that pioneered the advent of many historic gay liberation events throughout history. The group invite people to come together at the London LGBT Centre in Leyton and celebrate this ethos, regardless of their background.

Europride event in London, which drew in a crowd of 100,000 at a time when homophobia was rife.

Speakers include drag perfumer King Frankie Sinatra, also known as Karen Fischer who starred in the Rebel Dykes film.

Our Collective Voice: Photovoice Exhibition – February 8th

On February 8th at 6pm Brixton Library are hosting a special 'photovoice' exhibition curated by LamQ+ which displays and expresses the impact of Covid-19 on Black, Asian and/or other marginalised LGBTQI+ communities through a series of photographs.

The exhibition will display the original work of eleven Photovoice CoResearchers from Lambeth and other boroughs focused on developing new and emerging appreciations of underrepresented communities.

Invade The Southwark Playhouse

I think I may have seen the best production of 2022 and we still haven’t reached February, writes Michael Holland...

Operation Mincemeat has already won The Stage Debut award for Best Composer/ Lyricist, the Off-West End award for Best Company Ensemble, and was listed in The Observer‘s Top 10 shows of the year because it has been around since 2019, but every time it opens the show gets closed down by Covid. I believe this is its third attempt at a run at Southwark Playhouse, so I was determined to see it before the new variant came and caused more chaos.

The book, music and lyrics are written by SpitLip, three of whom are in the cast, and because they have had a lot of downtime to rehearse and fine tune their brilliant creation it manifests itself in what can only be described as perfect performances.

A Stellar Cast Makes Stars ShinE

Ross McGregor’s Payne: The Stars Are Fire is basically about Cecilia Payne, one of the first women to receive a PhD in the US for her groundbreaking work in astronomy, but also tells of the amazing women that she worked with who, along with Payne, were marginalised by the men who begrudged them their place and work at Harvard Observatory, writes Michael Holland...

The story begins in England where women were not awarded university degrees but given certificates for the same work as the men. This attitude led her to accept an offer to work at Harvard Observatory where she thought there would be more opportunities for women. She was wrong.

The women were given boring, mundane work that would feed into the scientific papers written by their superiors, but when Payne found

something quite incredible in her research her findings were suppressed as they would have invalidated astronomer Henry Russell’s earlier work.

Of course she was upset that he asked her to change her work to fit his agenda, and even more so when she later found her theory in one of Russell’s papers, with only the smallest recognition that it was hers.

But recognition of her brilliance did come, slowly and reluctantly over many years. She was passed over several times for the top jobs but got her PhD and became the first woman to become a Full Professor there and to head a department.

Payne: The Stars Are Fire is replete with technical terms, but these do not stop Cecilia’s trail-blazing story shining through. Plus, there are hints at comedy to lighten the mood.

The overall essence of the play is not

just the patriarchal world of science and its attitude towards women, but how, unlike religion that stands still, science is constantly evolving and changing with new research; we see a cutthroat world where the desire to be the first to discover something is paramount. When Payne’s boss Harlow Shapley read a new scientific paper he screamed, ‘Hubble has shrunken my Milky Way by half!’

By virtue of its subject matter, this is a wordy production but it never falters or fails to hold the attention. It is performed by the same stellar cast on alternate nights with Holst: The Music in Spheres, a play that introduces us to Cecilia Payne as a student of Gustav Holst.

ultimate victory for the Allies, but it is told in a crazy and hilarious way.

This production seems as if a group of friends got together with a few bottles one moodaltered night and decided to write a spoof of all the great creators of musicals and came up with this. Hence, glimpses of Fosse, Sondheim, Kander & Ebb, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Eminem(!), plus a magical ensemble take on Beyoncé’s All The Single Ladies.

The cast of five mostly double up roles, so the mousy girl in the typing pool at one point slinks on like she’s escaping from Chicago the Musical to sing a raunchy tune that fed in to the Nazis goose-stepping to a Beastie Boys number; and how the very serious head of the Secretarial Unit metamorphoses into a flamboyant Bernard Spilsbury, the pathologist, will remain etched on my mind for many moons to come.

But amid this company of greatness two stood out for me. David Cumming has taken the true description of Charles Cholmondeley as ‘eccentric’ and took it to

comedic extremes, to Jerry Lewis levels of physicality and facial expressions; and Natasha Hodgson’s comic timing as Ewen Montagu is beautiful to watch. She stole every scene she was in, which was a feat in itself in such esteemed company.

SpitLip and all connected to this wonderful piece of work deserve all the awards and accolades that come their way, and as well as a festival of fun there is a final, poignant tribute to Glyndwr Michael, the man who sadly died alone, whose body was used in tricking Hitler and changing the course of the war.

As the lights went down, we all stood as one to clap, whistle and cheer this amazing show.

The moneyed elite clambering over the poor to save their own skin; a blundering egotist at the helm making dodgy decisions; a rancid class system valuing the privileged few above the workers manning the pumps. No, this isn't a description of life in Britain today, it is the story of the haves and have-nots aboard the Titanic more than 100 years ago, writes Rod Kitson and Maria Li...

What’s really evocative, is that the back of the panel is visible with the maker’s marks for fitting and placement.

The small signs of the disaster colour many of the exhibits here: the water damage to the passenger logbook which was retrieved from a sodden coat pocket. It makes it feel like this is a real story, not just a Hollywood drama ladled out on the silver servers recovered from miles under the icecold Atlantic. The people who are trapped below, separated like animals in cages away from lifeboats or submerged in seawater, all of that becomes real.

It’s not all doom and gloom though. The 3rd Class menu looked tasty by today’s travel standards; its smoked fish or porridge breakfast, and roast beef dinner is certainly more appealing than the reconstituted microwave mush on today's long-haul flights.

The exhibition itself ebbs and flows at a nice pace, if drifting a little in the early stages, before steaming on into faithfully recreated 1st class cabins that cost £500 at the time – a cool €80,000 in today’s money.

The audio guide is effective and informative, if a little anti-social, taking the listeners fathoms deep into their own worlds of spoken words via headphones.

Its climax is an interactive real-ice ‘miniberg’ which visitors are encouraged to leave handprints on, to touch and immerse themselves in the cold. It’s a neat device.

An exhibition at Canada Water takes us on a journey through more than 200 real-life objects from the famous wreck, from pocket watches retrieved from people whose bodies were pulled lifeless from the freezing water, through optimistic postcards sent on the ship’s departure, to the silver tableware still gleaming despite being dredged up 70 years after sinking with the liner.

James Cameron’s 1997 movie epic gave us a fabulously romantic, tense and exciting adventure. That was, of course, centred around the Jack and Rose characters, who in this exhibition we learn were based on real people, it wasn’t mere Hollywood myth.

And, inevitably, it was the 3rd class passengers down near the bilge who suffered the most in the 1912 tragedy.

The vast swathes of names recorded in the final room of the exhibition divide the loss of life into classes and also crew, and the sheer volume of casualties becomes stark. Of the 2,224 people on board when she steamed west of Ireland, 1,514 would not make it to New York. It’s telling that almost three-quarters of the 3rd class passengers perished in the disaster (68 per cent), more than double the fatality rate of 1st class (29 per cent).

The forgotten Walworth murder of Emma Oakley

The trial spoke volumes about Victorian attitudes to prostitution

The vicious murder of a young woman in Walworth in the late 1800’s shows just how much women were judged by a society were men ruled supreme. Delving into old murder cases Walworth historian Neil Crossfield unearths the tragic life of Emma Oakley and her killer.

Shortly after 4pm on Wednesday 29 June 1892, shots rang out in the parlour of 81 Grosvenor Park, Walworth, leaving a young woman mortally wounded. The eighteenyear-old victim was Emma Oakley. The assailant was her lover, 22-year-old, John James Banbury. They had only known each other for a few short months but Banbury had killed her in a fit of jealousy. Papers reported that they were ‘living together as man and wife’ but the exact nature of their relationship is unclear.

It is difficult to know for sure but at several points it is implied that Emma may have been a sex worker. During cross examination, Emma Foster, who also lived in 81 Grosvenor Park, said that she was not aware that Emma Oakley ‘walked the Strand’. The West End of London, especially the area around the Strand was infamous throughout the Victorian period as a place where prostitution was widespread.

The initial inquest was held at Newington Coroners Court. Emma’s father was called to give evidence. Henry Oakley, a coachman from South Kensington, said that Emma had been born in Kensington around 1873 and that her mother had died three years ago. He had seen her the night before she was murdered, saying that she was in good health and had said that she was doing well. Again, jurors made insinuations about her profession. Oakley reported that his daughter had once been in service but had not had a position for some two and a half years. The jurors continued to question Oakley about why he hadn’t troubled to ascertain what his daughter was doing, to which he replied that he thought she was old enough to look after herself. This inquest returned a verdict of wilful murder and the jury also added that her father was deserving of censure for his ‘unmanly conduct towards his child’.

The 1891 census a year earlier shows her lodging at 16 Grosvenor Street, Walworth, with a carpenter named Thomas Lacy and his family. Her occupation is described as a ‘mantle maker’. Her landlady at 81 Grosvenor Park described her as a dressmaker. While we may never know

History Banbury had become jealous when he had seen her coming out of a public house with two men, wearing only a dressing gown her true employment status, in Victorian England the euphemisms ‘seamstress’, ‘mantua maker’ and the like, were often used for women who were engaged in sex work. Despite the often-repeated trope that the Victorian era was one of extreme prudishness and respectability yet in reality, prostitution was rife. It is impossible to ascertain exactly how many women were engaged in sex work in Victorian London, but some contemporary commentators suggested it could be up to 80,000. However, this figure is now thought to have been over exaggerated. The harsh financial reality for women in the late 19th century was that sex work could often be the only option to keep them out of the workhouse, so it is little wonder that many so young women gravitated towards this out of necessity and as a means of survival.

Banbury had been born around 1870 in Camden Town. The Penny Illustrated Paper reported lurid details about his early life, noting that he had been an apprentice carpenter, but had been so vicious and unmanageable that his indentures were cancelled. Banbury was then sent to stay with family friends in Australia. Life ‘down under’ was just as chaotic and it is alleged that he was sentenced to eighteen months solitary confinement for assaulting and almost killing an old lady. Once leaving prison, he gained lawful employment as a clerk in a tramway office but was soon embroiled in the embezzlement of a large sum of money. He had hidden out in the Australian bush for some time before returning to London in September 1891 to collect the inheritance his late father had left him. By all accounts this was several hundred pounds and Banbury appeared to be gambling and living an extravagant lifestyle. The criminal trial was held on 23 September at the Old Bailey, where the evidence revealed the sad sequence of events. Around 2pm on the afternoon of the murder, Banbury got into a hansom cab at Bridge Street, Westminster. Coincidentally, the cab driver, Henry Briggs from Camberwell, was his brother-in-law. He asked him first to drive to the Southampton restaurant on Chancery Lane where they both ‘took some refreshment’. When they had finished eating, Banbury asked him to drive to the Walworth Road, where Briggs said Banbury had a third glass of gin in the Grosvenor Arms. The cab driver was asked to wait for a couple of minutes as he wanted to be taken to Victoria Station.

Banbury had then gone to 81 Grosvenor Park and murdered Emma. Neighbour Emma Foster, recalled that while in the washhouse, she heard strange noises in the house and had gone to investigate. She recognised Banbury, as he had stayed there with Emma on several occasions over the last few weeks. She had spoken to him,

81 Grosvenor Park today but he made no reply and left. Walking into the parlour, she noticed a strong smell of gunpowder and saw Emma, laying on the floor, partially dressed. She was still alive at this point and Dr John Parrot of 32 Camberwell Road was called for. However, by the time he arrived, Emma had died.

Dr Parrot noted five bullet wounds. It was apparent that Emma had been shot in the back when she had opened the door to Banbury.

Around five minutes later, Banbury had walked back to where the cab was parked and now asked Briggs to drive him to Charing Cross Station. When they got there, Banbury said “get down and have a drink, as I am going to leave you.

I have shot a girl.” Knowing he had a reputation for lying, Briggs just laughed at him. However, when they went into a pub in Villiers Street, Banbury told Briggs that his story was true and that “I loved her and made up my mind that no one else should have her.” Later Banbury had told a friend that he had become jealous when he had

seen her coming out of a public house with two men, wearing only a dressing gown.

In a rage he had then gone off and bought himself a revolver.

The pair went back to the cab at Charing Cross when Banbury produced the gun with which he had killed his lover. Briggs snatched it off him and Banbury begged that he gave it back, even offering him £50 to do so. They had fought briefly until their scuffle was broken up by a station porter.

They then had got back into the cab but Banbury jumped out in Waterloo Place and vanished. Knowing the unreliability of Banbury, Briggs still didn’t believe him and thought little more of it. The next day he heard about the murder of Emma and took the gun to Carter Street police station, reporting Banbury’s strange confession the previous day.

Banbury was arrested shortly before midnight, at 6 Brewer Street, Pimlico.

Two officers from the Metropolitan Police L division, then based at Carter Street, Detective-Sergeants William Leonard and William Brogden saw the suspect arrive at his rooms just before 11pm. Thinking he could be armed, they forced entry into his room and restrained him. He was described as being dazed and had evidently been drinking. At first he denied all knowledge of the shooting but had the foresight to tell the officers “I am not such a fool to incriminate myself. I am educated.

You have your business to do and must do it.”

When all the evidence had been heard at the trial, the judge, Justice Collins, summed up and sent the jury off to consider the case. Two hours later, they returned to the court room with a guilty verdict but with a recommendation that mercy should be given on account of the accused’s young age. However, it was also at this time that the Foreman of the jury revealed that two jurors were deaf and had not heard all of the evidence, the other jurors having to

relate this to them. Understandably, the judge was none too happy about this and had no other option but to dismiss the jury and hold a retrial a couple of days later.

Once the evidence had been heard for a second time, the jury returned another guilty verdict but this time with no appeal for clemency to be shown. Banbury was sentenced to death.

Though the perception is that the Victorians had a far more brutal attitude towards capital punishment, three petitions, containing nearly 2000 signatures, had been sent to the Home Secretary asking for a reprieve. His supporters argued that he was ‘unhinged’ at the time due to ‘intemperate habits’ and that the murder was not premeditated.

The Home Secretary set up a special medical inquiry, panelled by doctors from Broadmoor Mental Asylum who concluded that Banbury was not insane and therefore the execution could go ahead. It was said that, whilst thankful of his supporters’ efforts, Banbury had expressed little hope that his life would be spared. He was executed at Wandsworth Jail at 9am on the morning of Tuesday 11th October 1892.

On the day before, he had said emotional farewells to members of his family and friends. He had gone to bed around ten o’clock that evening, but had not slept well. He had eaten little of the breakfast provided for him. The chaplain, a Reverend Pigot, had entered his cell around 8am and prayed with the condemned man.

Banbury expressed remorse for what he had done and hoped for forgiveness. The ‘passing bell’ which signified an imminent execution began to ring around a quarter to nine. Dressed in a light grey suit and brown boots, he was led to the execution room next door to his cell, where he shook hands with prison officials, thanking them for the kindness they had shown him. His hands were bound, a hood placed over his head and a noose placed around his neck.

The executioner, Billington, had calculated that a 6ft drop was needed and when the gallows lever was pulled, death was said to be instantaneous.

Following the post execution inquest, members of this jury were taken on a tour of the prison. Whilst in the cell in which Banbury had spent his last hours, they noticed that he had left a large piece of bread from his final breakfast. The Singleton Argus, an Australian newspaper, reported that on seeing these macabre remnants, ‘there was a scramble among the jurors’ to grab them as a relic of the proceedings, with the bread being ‘speedily broken up and taken away by those who had managed to grab a piece’. This was just another of the many twists in this very bizarre case.

Several times in the weeks leading up to the execution, Banbury had maintained that he had no recollection of the events when he killed Emma. It was evident that he had been drinking heavily on the day of the murder and had become jealous when he had seen the woman he loved with other men, but this cannot excuse his behaviour.

Victorian London was an extremely violent place and unfortunately it was often the women and girls who bore the brunt of this violence. It is revealing of Victorian attitudes that rather than just focusing on the dreadful death of a vulnerable young woman, the possibility that she may have been working as a prostitute was raised, as if this was a contributory factor in her murder.

Emma Oakley was the tragic victim of a brutal jealous lover but what we know about her life suggests that she was as much a victim of poverty and the conditions which many young women experienced in late Victorian London.

Banbury was buried in an unmarked grave within the grounds in Wandsworth Gaol, but sadly it is not known where Emma Oakley was laid to rest.

Dulwich Village: •No person causing any vehicle to proceed in a south-eastbound direction in Dulwich Village shall, upon reaching its junction with Calton Avenue, cause that vehicle to turn left into Calton Avenue.

• No person causing any vehicle to proceed in a north-westbound direction in Dulwich Village shall, upon reaching its junction with Calton Avenue, cause that vehicle to turn right into Calton Avenue.

• Nothing above shall apply to a pedal cycle.

Court Lane: • No person causing any vehicle to proceed in that part of Court Lane which lies north-west of a point 4.5 metres south-east of the common boundary of Nos. 1b and 1c Court Lane shall, upon reaching that point, cause that vehicle to enter that part of Court Lane which lies southeast of a point 4.5 metres south-east of the common boundary of Nos. 1b and 1c Court Lane.

• No person causing any vehicle to proceed in that part of Court Lane which lies south-east of a point 4.5 metres south-east of the common boundary of Nos. 1b and 1c Court Lane shall, upon reaching that point, cause that vehicle to enter that part of Court Lane which lies northwest of a point 4.5 metres south-east of the common boundary of Nos. 1b and 1c Court Lane.

• Nothing in Articles above shall apply to a pedal cycle.

• New or extended lengths of ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions (20m) Court Lane

PUBLIC NOTICE London Borough of Southwark NOTICE OF DESIGNATION OF AN AREA FOR ADDITIONAL LICENSING Section 56, Housing Act 2004 1.

The London Borough of Southwark (“The Council”) in exercise of its powers under section 56 of the Housing Act 2004 (“the Act”) hereby designates the entire area of its district, as subject to Additional Licensing as described at paragraph 4. The designation applies to all Houses in Multiple Occupation (“HMOs’’) as described at paragraph 5

CITATION, COMMENCEMENT AND DURATION 2.

This designation will be known as The London Borough of Southwark Designation of an Area for Additional Licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation 2022. The Designation is made on 28 October 2021 and shall come into force on 1 March 2022.

3.

The designation shall cease to have effect on 1 March 2027 (not more than five years) or earlier if the Authority revokes the scheme under section 84 of the Act.

AREA TO WHICH THE DESIGNATION APPLIES 4.

This designation shall apply to the entire area of the London Borough of Southwark as delineated in red on the map in annex A below.

APPLICATION OF THE DESIGNATION 5.

The designation applies to all Houses in Multiple Occupation (“HMOs’’) as defined by section 254 of the Act that are occupied by 3 or more persons comprising 2 or more households as defined in Annex B, within the area described at paragraph 1 unless: a. the house is an HMO that falls within the nationally prescribed category of HMO that is required to be licensed as a ‘mandatory HMO’ under section 55(2)(a) Part 2 of the Act1 ; b. the house is subject to an Interim or Final Management Order under Part 4 of the Act; c. the house is subject to a temporary exemption under section 62 of the Act; d. The house is an HMO that is a building or part of a building that is not an HMO for the purposes of licensing under Part 2 of the Act2 as defined in Annex C/ Schedule 14 of the Act; or. e. it is a building converted into self-contained flats but does not meet the standards of conversion required by the Building Regulations 1991, and where less than two thirds of the flats are owner occupied to which Section 257 of the Housing Act 2004 applies where: the building or part of a building is of three or more storeys that have been converted into three or more self-contained flats and where both the building and self-contained flats it contains are under the same ownership or considered by the council to be effectively under the same control.

EFFECT OF THE DESIGNATION 6.

Subject to sub paragraphs 5(a) to (e) above, every HMO of the description specified in that paragraph in the area specified in paragraph 4 shall be required to be licensed under section 61 of the Act.

7.

The designation falls within a description of designations in relation to which the Secretary of State has issued a General Approval under section 58 of the Act, namely, The Housing Act 2004: Licensing of Houses of Multiple Occupation and Selective Licensing of Other Residential Accommodation (England) General Approval 2015 which came into force on 1 April 2015.

8.

The London Borough of Southwark will comply with the notification requirements contained in Section 29 of the Act and shall maintain a register of all houses registered under this designation, as required under section 232 of the Act.3

Buildings controlled or managed by a co-operative society (1) A building where— (a) The person managing or having control of it is a co-operative society whose rules are such as to secure that each of the conditions set out in sub-paragraph (2) is met, and (b) No person who occupies premises in the building does so by virtue of an assured tenancy, a secure tenancy or a protected tenancy.

A building or a part of a building meets the converted building test if— (a) It is a converted building; (b) It contains one or more units of living accommodation that do not consist of a self-contained flat or flats (whether or not it also contains any such flat or flats); (c) The living accommodation is occupied by persons who do not form a single household4; (d) The living accommodation is occupied by those persons as their only or main residence or they are to be treated as so occupying it5; (e) Their occupation of the living accommodation constitutes the only use of that accommodation; and (f) Rents are payable or other consideration is to be provided in respect of at least one of those persons' occupation of the living accommodation.

“Basic amenities” means— (a) A toilet, (b) Personal washing facilities, or (c) Cooking facilities

(2) The conditions are — (a) That membership of the society is restricted to persons who are occupiers or prospective occupiers of buildings managed or controlled by the society, (b) That all management decisions of the society are made by the members (or a specified quorum of members) at a general meeting which all members are entitled to, and invited to, attend, (c) That each member has equal voting rights at such a meeting, and (d) That, if a person occupies premises in the building and is not a member, that person is an occupier of the premises only as a result of sharing occupation of them with a member at the member's invitation.

(3) For the purposes of sub-paragraph (a) “co-operative society” means a body that— (a) Is registered as a co-operative society under the 2014 Act or is a pre-commencement society (within the meaning of that Act) that meets the condition in section 2(2)(a)(i) of that Act, and (b) Is neither— (i) A non-profit registered provider of social housing, nor (ii) Registered as a social landlord under Part 1 of the Housing Act 1996.

(4) In this paragraph— - “the 2014 Act” means the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014;] - “assured tenancy” has the same meaning as in Part 1 of the Housing Act 1988; - “protected tenancy” has the same meaning as in the Rent Act 1977; - “secure tenancy” has the same meaning as in Part 4 of the Housing Act 1985.]

Buildings regulated otherwise than under this Act Any building whose occupation is regulated otherwise than by or under this Act and which is of a description specified for the purposes of this paragraph in regulations made by the appropriate national authority.

“Converted building” means a building or part of a building consisting of living accommodation in which one or more units of such accommodation have been created since the building or part was constructed;

Buildings occupied by students (1) Any building— (a) which is occupied solely or principally by persons who occupy it for the purpose of undertaking a full-time course of further or higher education at a specified educational establishment or at an educational establishment of a specified description, and (b) where the person managing or having control of it is the educational establishment in question or a specified person or a person of a specified description.

“Enactment” includes an enactment comprised in subordinate legislation (within the meaning of the Interpretation Act 1978 (c. 30);

(2) In sub-paragraph (a) “specified” means specified for the purposes of this paragraph in regulations made by the appropriate national authority.

“Self-contained flat” means a separate set of premises (whether or not on the same floor)— (a) which forms part of a building; (b) either the whole or a material part of which lies above or below some other part of the building; and (c) in which all three basic amenities are available for the exclusive use of its occupants

(3) Sub-paragraph (4) applies in connection with any decision by the appropriate national authority as to whether to make, or revoke, any regulations specifying— (a) A particular educational establishment, or (b) A particular description of educational establishments.

HMO declarations If a local housing authority are satisfied that a building or part of a building in their area meets either: - the standard test; or - the self-contained flat test; or - the converted building test they may serve a notice under section 255 (an “HMO declaration”) declaring the building or part to be a house in multiple occupation.

(4) The appropriate national authority may have regard to the extent to which, in its opinion— (a) the management by or on behalf of the establishment in question of any building or buildings occupied for connected educational purposes is in conformity with any code of practice for the time being approved under section 233 which appears to the authority to be relevant, or (b) the management of such buildings by or on behalf of establishments of the description in question is in general in conformity with any such code of practice, as the case may be.

Annex C: Buildings which are not HMOs for purposes of this designation In the following paragraphs “building” includes a part of a building.

(5) In sub-paragraph (4) “occupied for connected educational purposes”, in relation to a building managed by or on behalf of an educational establishment, means occupied solely or principally by persons who occupy it for the purpose of undertaking a full-time course of further or higher education at the establishment.

Buildings controlled or managed by public sector bodies etc A building where the person managing or having control of it is (a) a local housing authority, (b) a non-profit registered provider of social housing, (c) a body which is registered as a social landlord under Part 1 of the Housing Act 1996, (d) a police and crime commissioner, (e) the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime, (f) a fire and rescue authority, or (g) a health service body [within the meaning of section 9 of the National Health Service Act 2006]. “fire and rescue authority” means a fire and rescue authority under the Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004 A building— (a) Which is social housing within the meaning of Part 2 of the Housing and Regeneration Act 2008, and (b) Where the person managing or having control of it is a profit-making registered provider of social housing.]

Buildings occupied by two persons Any building which is occupied only by two persons who form two households.

PUBLIC NOTICE London Borough of Southwark NOTICE OF DESIGNATION OF AN AREAS FOR SELECTIVE LICENSING Section 80, Housing Act 2004 1.

The London Borough of Southwark (“The Council”) in exercise of its powers under section 80 of the Housing Act 2004 ("the Act") hereby designates for selective licensing the areas described in paragraph 5

CITATION, COMMENCEMENT AND DURATION 2.

These 2 Designations shall be known as the London Borough of Southwark Designations for Areas for Selective Licensing 2022. All privately rented residential accommodation situated within the designated areas must be licensed with the Council unless subject to statutory exemption as set out in paragraph 5.

The Designations are made on 28 October 2021 and will come into force on 1 March 2022. In line with the Housing Act 2004: Licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation and Selective Licensing of Other Residential Accommodation (England) General Approval 2015 and the updated guidance issued by the Department for Communities and Local Government in March 2015 (Selective licensing in the private rented sector - A Guide for local authorities), the Designations fall within a description of designations for which, as long as the authority has consulted for at least ten weeks, do not need approval from the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) as the designated areas cover 20% or less than the total geographical area of the London Borough of Southwark’s and includes 20% or less than its private rented properties.

The Designations shall cease to have effect on 1 March 2027 (not more than 5 years) or earlier if the Council revokes the scheme under section 84 of the Act.

AREA TO WHICH THE DESIGNATION APPLIES 5.

This designations shall apply to the following areas of the London Borough of Southwark.

Designation 1 is delineated in red with the area itself coloured yellow on the map and Designation 2 is delineated in red with the area itself coloured orange on the map both in annex A below. The following wards are included in each designation.

APPLICATION OF THE DESIGNATION 6.

This designation applies to any house1 which is let or occupied under a tenancy or licence within the area described in paragraph 5 unless: a. the house is a house in multiple occupation [HMO] that falls within the nationally prescribed category of HMO that is required to be licensed as a ‘mandatory HMO’ under section 55(2)(a) Part 2 of the Act2; b. the house is a house in multiple occupation that falls within the prescribed category of HMO that is required to be licensed under the London Borough of Southwark Designation of an Area for Additional Licensing of Houses of Multiple Occupation made on 1 January 2022 under Section 56 of the Housing Act 20043; c. the tenancy or licence of the house has been granted by a registered social landlord4; d. the house is subject to an Interim or Final Management Order under Part 4 of the Act; e. the house is subject to a temporary exemption under section 86 of the Act; or f. the house is occupied under a tenancy or licence which is exempt under the Act or the occupation is of a building or part of a building so exempt as defined in Paragraph 5(f): Exempted tenancies or licences, Selective Licensing of Houses (Specified Exemptions) (England) Order 2006 SI 370/2006.

EFFECT OF THE DESIGNATION 6. Subject to sub paragraphs 6(a) to (f) every house in the area specified in paragraph 5 that is occupied under a tenancy or licence shall be required to be licensed under section 85 of the Act.6 7. The London Borough of Southwark will comply with the notification requirements contained in section 83 of the Act and shall maintain a register of all houses registered under this designation, as required under section 232 of the Act.5 If you are a landlord, managing agent or a tenant, or if you require information regarding this designation, or to apply for a licence, further information and assistance is available from the Council’s Private Rented Property Licensing Team by telephone on 020 7525 3114 or by email to resi@southwark.gov.uk, or by writing to Private Sector Housing Enforcement Service, PO Box 70063, Queens Road, London, SE15 2HP. Any person who operates a licensable property without a licence or allows a licensed property to be occupied by more households or persons other than as authorised by a licence, is liable to prosecution and upon summary conviction is liable to an unlimited fine. A person who breaches a condition of a licence is liable upon summary conviction to a maximum fine of £5,000 per breach.

“I’m very excited and thrilled to be back at Surrey County Cricket Club,” Mahmood said. “The club is very close to my heart and I’m looking forward to working with old friends and new and a very talented and skilful squad.”

Stewart welcomed the new coaching trio. “Losing our head coach and an assistant coach so close to the start of the season is not ideal but I have every confidence in Gareth, Jim and Azhar stepping up to the plate and passing on their vast experience and knowledge to the squad,” Stewart said.

Surrey confirm experienced trio in interim gigs Gareth Batty

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARETH BATTY led his first training session this week after he was named Surrey’s interim head coach for the 2022 season.

Batty will be supported by Jim Troughton and Azhar Mahmood, who will join as interim assistants.

Batty took over from Vikram Solanki, who has become director of cricket at the Ahmedabad side in the Indian Premier League. Assistant coach Richard Johnson left to become head coach of Middlesex.

Troughton is joining Surrey for the first time while Mahmood is returning to the club after a professional career that saw him win the County Championship, the National League and the T20 Cup. Troughton is a former head coach of

Dulwich had welcomed Levee as their new signing from Harbour View FC. The 24-year-old, who was born in Kingston, was called up to the Jamaica squad last year and made his debut against the USA in March 2021.

He has also featured for the Reggae Boyz at youth level, including at under-17, under-20 and under-23s at the Pan American Games in Peru.

Levee began his career at Jamaican side Real Mona, before moving to Spain. He spent three year at Valencia and several other youth academies in the Valencia area.

He returned to North America where he played at high-school level in Massachusetts. He then went to the University of Maryland and made a total of twelve appearances for the university’s soccer team, The Terrapins.

Levee signed for Harbour View, who compete in the top flight Jamaica National Premier League, in 2019.

The Hamlet are back at home this Saturday when they face Chelmsford City. Kick-off at Champion Hill is 3pm.

After such a drab start to the year, the Lions kicked it up several gears as goals from Mason Bennett and Benik Afobe did for Valerien Ismael’s beleaguered side.

It was Bennett’s first goal in front of Millwall fans since he arrived in SE16 in January 2020 as he rounded off a superb individual performance in which he gave

the Baggies’ Cedric Kipre a torrid 90 minutes.

Afobe added a brilliant second when he flicked the ball through the legs of Matt Clarke before curling precisely past goalkeeper David Button.

Other than an early Andy Carroll strike which Bartosz Bialkowski saved, the visitors failed to really trouble the Lions in the first half. Millwall dominated the second period to such an extent that West Brom fans showed their fury with how things are going by firing flares onto the pitch. Millwall launched a ‘Don’t be a Tosser’ campaign after the FA Cup game against Crystal Palace. With reports that seats had also been ripped up in the away end, it was clear who the tossers were last weekend.

It had been a comparatively dull first half with neither side doing enough to be in front at the break. Scott Malone and Danny McNamara both sent efforts off target and with both sides deploying 5-2-3 formations they cancelled each other out.

Harris, 44, and his assistant with the Lions and Cardiff City, Dave Livermore, signed two-and-a-half year contracts.

Harris returned to the dugout after just over a year out of management following his sacking by the Bluebirds in January 2021.

Thompson, 26, had his Millwall contract mutually terminated on Monday before he moved to Priestfield.

They are 23rd in League One. “It has been a difficult task over the past few weeks, interviewing and selecting the right candidate but I am delighted that with Neil’s experience, his knowledge and passion of this football club, and his desire to take the club on a new journey, that today is the start of a new tomorrow,” chairman Paul Scally said.

But Lions boss Gary Rowett didn’t panic.

He told his players at half-time it was what they had expected and that space would open up after an hour.

Still, someone had to take the game by the scruff of the neck, and it was the home side that did just that.

Afobe failed to keep an effort down from inside the penalty area before Oliver Burke, starting for the first time in a Millwall shirt, was denied by Button as the hosts cranked up the pressure a few notches.

Two more chances came and went, as Burke’s heavy touch prevented him having an effort on goal and then Bennett shot wide.

When you fail to take your chances you always leave yourselves open to the sucker punch and West Brom’s Callum Robinson almost knocked the wind out of the Lions. Seizing on a mix-up between McNamara and Shaun Hutchinson, the

Irish international was only denied by Bialkowski making a smart stop down low at his near post.

But Millwall weren’t going to be denied for much longer. They went in front in the 67th minute when the ball eventually landed at Bennett’s feet and he fired home his first goal of the season from close range, despite the best efforts of Carroll on the line.

The second arrived nine minutes later and it was again nothing less than the Lions deserved. Afobe showed skill and then composure to score his seventh goal of the season. He was applauded off the pitch when he was substituted with a minute left.

Pride was restored on the back of a committed performance. That is what the fans want to see and that is what they got.

EFL hits out after fans’ behaviour

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THE EFL has hit out at fans who have caused trouble at grounds and said “they are not welcome at our matches”.

West Brom supporters threw flares onto the Den pitch last weekend and one video appeared to show seats also being thrown towards the goal where Bartosz Bialkowski stood in the second half.

There were also offensive chants at former Lions striker Adebayo Akinfenwa when he was warming up for Wycombe in their game against MK Dons.

The EFL issued a strong statement

after the weekend’s incidents.

The statement read: “Following multiple incidents of inappropriate and reckless crowd behaviour on Saturday the EFL will work with the relevant authorities and respective clubs to ensure those responsible are held to account.

“Whilst these instances only represent a very small section of people attending matches, the mindless few who choose to behave in this way are only demonstrating a complete lack of respect for the clubs they claim to support.

“Our message is simple - those intent on causing trouble are not welcome at our matches and we ask you to ‘Stay Away’.

“Anyone found to be behaving offensively at a football match can

expect to be dealt with by the police and the club, who will continue to work closely with supporter groups to address the causes of violence from individual fans and will always support prosecutions when that is the appropriate course of action to take.

“The EFL is disappointed that on a day when the footballing focus was on our League competition, the discussion is once again about matters off the pitch.

“We will continue to work closely and collaboratively with our clubs, safety advisory groups and local police forces to ensure security operations in place are robust and effective, whilst also providing support when any incidents do occur.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.u MAIKEL KIEFTENBELD is Gary Rowett’s calm but aggressive and determined lieutenant on the pitch.

He’s the player the manager can call upon to do a specific job.

Rowett knows Kieftenbeld won’t sulk after not being picked. And Kieftenbeld won’t be going banging on the manager’s door asking why he’s not in the team.

Kieftenbeld didn’t start a league game for two-and-a-half months and though his return to the side ended in disappointment with the 1-0 defeat to Blackpool, he showed why Rowett signed him in the 2-0 win against West Brom last weekend.

Rowett explained one of Kieftenbeld’s main strengths was his ability to spot when to step up from a deeper position in midfield to press an opponent. He did exactly that against the Baggies, forcing a turnover of possession before Scott Malone found Benik Afobe who scored the second goal.

At half-time in that game, with the Lions on the back of a three-game losing run and a Den that was getting edgy, Rowett kept his cool and told his side the game would open up after an hour. That’s exactly what happened and Millwall took their

chances.

Kieftenbeld appreciates that level approach from the manager who signed him for Birmingham.

“He’s a manager who’s been around the Championship for a long time so he knows the league, he knows what to ask from his players,” Kieftenbeld said.

“In some ways he is calm but he also wants his players to perform and win games. He makes sure we know and of course we know.

“I’ve had a lot of managers, especially in my time at Birmingham City, so I can see how things can be different, if some managers get stressed after three losses and start doing different things.

“He kept calm and made sure we stay focussed to win the game against West Brom. We did that and the world looks a lot different after a win.

“If you react out of emotion you think, ‘we lost the last three games, we have to change things’, but the game against Forest was probably one of our best games. Yes, you lose that game, but you should stick to the positive things. I think that’s what he did.”

Kieftenbeld is also a calm character and didn’t get despondent despite that losing run.

He said: “Not in terms of, ‘oh, we lost three games in a row’. It’s just the Championship. Sometimes you have a bad spell for a couple of games and

it’s just how you respond.

“The way we responded [against West Brom] was perfect. Even in the three games we lost I think we played well. We played well against Forest and were unlucky to lose that game.

“It’s small margins sometimes in the Championship but after three games of not winning a win is always good.

“It was good to be involved in the second goal. Saturday was the perfect game for me trying to win possession and passing the ball to the guys who are much better with it than me.”

Kieftenbeld has had to be patient in this campaign, with Billy Mitchell, George Saville and George Evans often ahead of him in Rowett’s thoughts.

But he did find it frustrating that he missed games as a result of two positive Covid tests when he was fine health-wise but because of government rules he had to stay away from the training ground and self-isolate.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m really glad I didn’t feel anything because I know there are a lot of people who are struggling when they catch Covid,” Kieftenbeld said.

“For me it was frustrating because I felt fine and the lads were out there playing matches. I wanted to be part of it but it is what it is, the season that it is, all clubs have struggled with it.

But for me it was not great because I just want to be part of the team and

be out there.

“It was tough [not playing]. I just had to wait for my chance and I’m glad I’m really more involved now.

Hopefully the second half the season I can be more involved than the first half.

“I’m not really a person for [knocking on the manager’s door] because I know he trusts me, he knows me as a player. I always have the feeling that if he needs me he will put me straight back into the team.

I don’t really like when people go to the manager and ask why they are not playing.

“I just want to keep my head down and show it on the training pitch, make sure I’m fit when the chance is there. I got my chance and I was happy I played two 90 minutes. One of the sports scientists told me it was about 21 weeks ago when I played my last 90.

“In some way I’m proud of myself that I kept going and training and am able now to play 90 minutes.”

It has been a frustrating season for Millwall with injuries and a Covid outbreak in December. But different players have made impacts when others have been out.

And Kieftenbeld feels that when Jed Wallace and George Saville return they will boost the side’s prospects in the second half of the season.

“First Bradders [Tom Bradshaw] and then Benik, they really stepped up,” Kieftenbeld said. “Now you’ve

got Mason Bennett, he has had a few injuries, but it always helps the team when the forwards are full of confidence.

“Benik deserves his rewards, he always works really hard for the team and I’m really pleased for him and Benno that they scored [against West Brom] because that will give them confidence and that will help the team.

“You can never doubt their work rate, that’s where it all starts from.

“We have good players who are still injured like Jed and Sav, hopefully they can return quickly and we can push on in the second half the season.

“Jed is a phenomenal player and that will help us in the second half of the season. We lost three games in a row but if you look at the league table we’re still in and around it.

Is the top six still the aim?

“It’s always difficult, it’s my seventh season now in the Championship,” Kieftenbeld replies. “After three defeats you think you’re struggling, then you beat West Brom and then you’re asking me about the play-offs.

Things change so quickly.

“Hopefully the guys who are out can return quickly because the Championship is a tough league, we often play every three days so we need everyone.

“You can call me back in two months and I hope I can give you a positive answer about challenging for the play-offs!”

It had the appearance of a typical midtable clash with two sides that are both looking to close the gap to the top six. But this was a tale of two teams that are very short of the attacking quality they need to bridge that gap.

Work rate and effort are two things that cannot be questioned. Those are two of the most important things that Millwall fans will judge their team on. As long as there

is that there will always be the support of the home faithful.

And for their efforts after their tough game against West Bromwich Albion the previous Saturday Millwall deserve credit.

But when we’re picking that out as the highest praise you can probably tell there wasn’t much else to get excited about.

Consistency or lack of it has been one of the principal gripes of supporters in SE16 this season. There was optimism coming into this one following the very good second-half display against a West Brom side striving for promotion back to the top tier at the first attempt. The Lions created a host of chances against the Baggies and took two. It’s a pity those goal opportunities weren’t more evenly shared over these two games.

There was a flat feeling about this contest from very early on. The Den is normally roaring and making it uncomfortable for visiting teams but even that wasn’t there.

At times it almost felt as If we had returned to behind-closed-doors football, such was the lack of noise. Millwall fans seemed to be waiting for their team to give them something to spark off. It rarely happened.

Preston weren’t much better and Rowett said they clearly came for a draw. He didn’t use that as an excuse for his side’s performance, though. Millwall are a side that are well able to go away from home and shut up shop. Rowett said it was down to his team to break their opponents down.

The hosts had the first real attempt of the game in the eighteenth minute when Mason Bennett’s free-kick smashed into the wall.

There was finally an effort on target and it was Bennett again, but goalkeeper Daniel Iversen comfortably saved the curled shot.

On a cold evening in South Bermondsey the home support needed something to warm them up after the break. But this time neither Bennett nor Benik Afobe could light the fire.

Afobe wasted some glorious chances to get something on goal. His initial touch was off on Tuesday. On three separate occasions he looked like he was to at least going to force Iversen into a save, but little was sticking for him.

It is that lack of a cutting edge that has cost Millwall in recent seasons, the

difference between mid-table and the top six.

For all the Lions’ huff and puff it was the visitors who had the best chance to win the game mid-way through the second half. Shaun Hutchinson brought down Andrew Hughes from a corner and Kevin Friend pointed to spot without hesitation.

Up stepped Ben Whiteman but his kick came back off the post and was scrambled away to safety.

If we’re searching for positives, one was Jed Wallace’s return to the side after all the speculation about a potential move away in January.

Wallace has been a double-figure goalscorer in the last two seasons so almost two months without him is a fair chunk of the campaign. That’s without evening mentioning his assists.

He was given a fantastic welcome back

by Lions supporters. Whatever happens in the summer, when no doubt the rumour machine will fire back into action, Millwall supporters know his influence is crucial.

The Lions won just two of the six games he missed over December and January and lost the other four.

Thompson, 26, moved to the Kent side to link up with former Millwall boss Neil Harris.

Rowett was asked if it was a difficult decision to move Thompson on.

“I know the fans will want me to say that it’s a tough decision because of what he means to the football club, and I get that,” Rowett said.

“I’ve had probably two or three good sit-downs with Thommo, he expressed a desire all the way along. He said first and foremost he wanted to play for Millwall.

Of course he does, he’s a Millwall fan and he’s had such a good time with the club.

“But, he wants to play football. He wanted to do that and I didn’t think it was fair to stand in his way.

“I had the same conversations with

“This time there was the opportunity of course with Neil going in at Gillingham.

“And we wish him all the best. You want to see him on a football pitch, not out of the squad.

Rowett said he is confident his attacking options will get better as the season goes on. Wallace remaining at the club of course is a big part of that, but the additions of Luke Freeman and Oliver Burke also has the potential to offer something different.

Burke has that hit-or-miss feeling about him and it will be a challenge for the coaching staff to iron out some of his flaws. Freeman can be a creative force in the middle of the pitch and Millwall were crying out for that against the Lilywhites. It needed someone to make use of the space in midfield, be that link to the attack. It will be interesting to see how Rowett uses Freeman.

The former Bristol City and QPR man has a decent scoring record, with a goal every seven or eight league starts. That might not sound like much until you consider that the Lions’ four other central midfielders have only three goals between them all season.

The Lions have scored just 29 goals in 28 Championship games this campaign. They need to turn more

draws into wins. They have one of the best defences in the division so if Freeman can add a handful of goals it could make a big difference. Millwall have spent 69 per cent of their gametime in the league drawing this season – more than any other team.

Tyler Burey is another one of Millwall’s young and talented players and he must be getting very close to starting his first league game for the club. He has made a number of substitute appearances since his recall from Hartlepool and can excite when he gets the ball. The hope for Burey is that he can follow in the footsteps of both Billy Mitchell and Danny McNamara who have cemented their places in the side this season and continue to improve.

But Millwall need their more senior players to take on the responsibility and improve the side’s scoring rate.

It’s nowhere near enough to get towards the play-offs. With Wallace back and Burke and Freeman in the door, it’s an area that has big potential for improvement.

What the managers said Gary Rowett:

“A lack of goals is a concern, it does not take a genius to work that out. But good players cost a lot of money.

“Hopefully Luke can be a big influence. It’s been a tough window.

“We’ve tried to change our approach and sometimes it is very difficult to get those players in.”

Ryan Lowe:

“We were outstanding, it was nearly the perfect away performance. There was only one team who might win it and that was us.

“We’re disappointed not to be going home with three points.

“Ben will score more penalties than he will miss but we were dead worthy of the penalty. I’ll never expect Ben to miss a penalty.

“It’s a good point, not many teams will come here and get anything. Millwall were fantastic against West Brom and we know what they are about.”

MILLWALL FACE a daunting task in their next league game away to Fulham next Tuesday (February 8).

The Cottagers have the best scoring rate across the top four leagues in England, with 2.6 goals a game. The next best in the second tier is Blackburn with 1.6 goals per game.

The Lions have recent experience of a heavy defeat at Craven Cottage, 4-0 in August 2019 when Scott Parker’s side set possession and passing records in the Championship.

But Blackpool showed last weekend how to quieten Marco Silva’s team. Most people expected the Tangerines to get a pasting in west London against a side that has scored four or more goals in nine Championship games this season.

Last month, Fulham became the first Football League club since Everton in 1954 to score six or more goals in three consecutive league games.

But Blackpool battled back after a sixth-minute opener from Aleksandar Mitrovic – who has scored 28 times this season and has more involvements in goals than Millwall have scored this campaign – to claim a 1-1 draw through Josh Bowler

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL WILL continue to try to reduce the average age of their squad in the summer – but boss Gary Rowett admitted it’s a market that can leave the Lions “priced out” by clubs with more financial muscle.

Millwall made January bids for Louie Sibley (20) from Derby County, as well as Zian Flemming (23) and Bart Ramselaar (25) from the Dutch Eredivisie.

Rowett acknowledges one market that has proved fruitful is for players on the fringes at other clubs. Rowett has signed Mason Bennett, Benik Afobe and Scott

Malone who were not wanted by their clubs, as well as Sheyi Ojo on loan from Liverpool who he will likely leave in the summer.

Those players settled at Millwall after difficult spells at previous clubs for various reasons. That reflects well on Rowett’s work with players that had been “down on their luck”. Rowett hopes to do the same with 24-year-old Oliver Burke, a player with vast potential who hasn’t yet lived up to it after transfer moves totalling almost £30million in his career.

Rowett revealed Milwall made an enquiry for a young defender in League Two in January but were quoted £1.5million.

In the next transfer window, the Lions will aim to sign youngsters with potential sell-on value as well as continue the policy of targeting those they can “reinvigorate” in a new environment.

“We’ve started every single window targeting 22-year-olds, 23-year-olds.

Young players that we feel can grow with the team,” Rowett said.

“What’s always difficult is that we always seem to get priced out of that market.

“For Millwall, I’m sure it’s been done over the years, we’re always trying to reinvigorate people that perhaps haven’t quite done what they would like to have done.

“Sometimes that could be a 23-, 24-year-old in the likes of Mason Bennett and Oli Burke or it can be a slightly older player like Benik or Scotty Malone that can also give you something good.

“We’ve spoken about the long term and trying to reduce the age of the team but I think in the short term sometimes you have to try to get the best players available every now and then. That is our market.

“There was a player in League Two that we enquired about, a defender, and we were getting told £1.5million. It’s such a difficult market that we’re in.

“So that’s something that I think we’ve been good at, getting the best out of players that are a bit down on their luck.

“We’ll continue to try to do that.”

Maik hopes for contract talks EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MAIKEL KIEFTENBELD is hoping for contract talks with Millwall at the end of the season.

Kieftenbeld, 31, is one of a number Lions players in the last six months of his deal.

The combative midfielder joined from Birmingham City in January 2021 and has made 30 appearances in all competitions.

He started for the first time in more than two months in the 2-0 win over West Brom last Saturday and was also in the line-up against Preston on Tuesday night.

Kieftenbeld took his chance in the side when George Saville was injured. Saville returned to the match-day squad on Tuesday.

Lions boss Gary Rowett has said he wants to lower the average age of the squad. How that will affect Kieftenbeld, who turns 32 in June, remains to be seen.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Kieftenbeld said. “I know I’m going out of contract but I think that will be talked about at the end of the season.

“That’s fine for me.

“My main focus now, especially when I’m back in the team, is to play well and do well for this club.

“In the first half of the season I wasn’t able to show much of myself so that’s my goal for the second half of the season. I want to do well and then at the end of the season we will see what the future will look like.”
