The mass vaccination event, the first of its kind in the borough, will offer Pfizer jabs to anyone over the age of eighteen who are yet to receive a first dose. Second Pfizer doses will also be available if it has been at least eight weeks since the first jab was given. No alternative vaccine will be available.

The landmark event at Millwall comes as cases of the more transmissible Delta variant, a COVID-19 strain first identified in India, have rocketed in the UK, leading to fears the illness is ripping through younger, unvaccinated age groups.

Confirmed cases rose by a shocking 72 per cent in Southwark last week as new health secretary Sajid Javid warned that, nationally, new cases could reach 100,000 a day by August.

COVID-19 is now surging through the under18s, with around 640,000 school children unable to attend school last Thursday due to self-isolating after being exposed to cases within their bubbles.

Despite the alarming figures, Javid defended the prime minister’s announcement that freedom was coming at last, with almost all restrictions ending on July 19 as planned in a bonfire of COVID-19 regulations.

Johnson told the nation on Monday that social distancing and limits on group meetups would be scrapped; face masks would no longer be compulsory; the work from home order lifted; and all businesses including night clubs could reopen.

The end of lockdown as we know it did not come without some words of caution.

The PM urged people to not be ‘demob happy’ and instead take ‘personal responsibility’; warning that we will all be living with COVID-19 for some time yet.

Since then, the government has also confirmed school bubbles will also end on July 19 and that double-vaccinated people will no

longer need to self-isolate after coming into contact with positive cases from August 16 onwards.

The decision to open up has split scientists and government advisers; many of whom fear escalating cases could still overwhelm hospitals despite the vaccination drive marching forward.

The UK recorded over 28,000 new cases in just 24 hours on Tuesday, figures not seen since December 2020. However, back then daily deaths were around 400 a day and are now far lower, with 37 daily deaths recorded at the time of going to press.

The key factor is a wall of immunity now the majority of the most vulnerable have been double jabbed, with other age groups including those in their 50s, 40s and 30s not far behind.

According to the latest estimates, 86.2 per cent of the UK’s population has had at least one dose, while over two thirds have now received two (64.3 per cent).

But London is still lagging behind. By last week, just 59 per cent of the eligible adult population in Southwark had taken up the offer of a first dose, and only 36 per cent of adults had received both - giving them maximum immunity.

Having both jabs is critical as research shows being fully vaccinated still offers very good protection against the Delta variant, now responsible for 99 per cent per cent of new cases across the country.

vaccines are more than 92 per cent effective against hospitalisation and serious disease after two doses.

But just one jab is only 26 per cent to 40 per cent effective at reducing symptomatic disease.

The success of the vaccination programme is now critical in south London, especially in areas where uptake has been low.

As we reported last week, vaccine hesitancy is waning - particularly among black and Asian minority groups who are increasingly coming forward to take up the vaccine offer.

Health officials from Southwark Council and South East London Clinical Commissioning Group have been pulling out all the stops to try and stop a third wave from devastating the borough and causing a rapid increase in hospital admissions.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for

health and wellbeing at Southwark Council, said: “With rates of COVID-19 rising again, especially among younger adults, we need to tackle the virus head on with our best protection – the vaccine. We’re calling on everyone over 18 from Southwark and beyond to put in a strong defensive play by booking themselves a vaccination slot at The Den this Saturday. Pfizer will be on offer, both first and second doses which we know give much better protection against COVID-19 than just the one.”

This weekend’s mass vaccination event is the next step in a series of increasingly interventionist policies including door-todoor knocking, leaflet drops and pop-up vaccine clinics.

The News also understands more mass vaccination events are being planned in conjunction with other, neighbouring boroughs in the coming weeks.

Organiser of ‘England’s most patriotic estate’ says there should be a ballot for local families Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk One of the organisers on ‘England’s most patriotic estate’ has hit out at officials for not showing England games at the Potters Fields fan village - despite the national team being in the final stages of the European championship.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) is running two fan zones - where fans can congregate, watch games and eat and drink. One in Trafalgar Square is showing England matches and fans have to enter a ballot to get in. The other in Potters Fields near Tower Bridge is more family-focused and has shown most games - but not England matches.

A spokesman for the GLA said this was because they would have to run a ballot like for Trafalgar Square, because there would be so much demand to get in.

But Chris Dowse, one of the ‘three musketeers’ on Bermondsey’s Kirby Estate, told the News: “That’s a joke. It’s absolutely ridiculous, Sadiq Khan just wants to pie us off. Why can’t residents from Southwark get something back too?

“There are idiots, of course there are, but at the same time, make it a family thing for English people, local people, as well as other people in London. It’s not really inclusive, we’ve all been tarnished with the same brush as the England fans who make trouble. But you get those everywhere.

“You’d have to run a ballot? Oh diddums. Imagine the revenue that that place would make. That can be done.

It sounds like laziness, it’s a feeble excuse.”

“Open it up to schools, let the schools take the kids and their parents. It would create such a nice atmosphere.

You might get the occasional idiot who would sell his ticket on but mostly it would be just great memories for these kids.

“We got to the semi-final in 2018, this might be the year that we go all the way and win it. Think of the memories that we could make all gathered together.

“I remember I was a kid when Lady Di and Prince Charles were married. It’s obviously different but it’s the same kind of thing. We all sat outside with these decorated tables with cakes and sandwiches. Those kinds of memories stick with you.”

The Kirby Estate on Southwark Park Road, where Chris lives, has kept up its tradition this year of putting up hundreds of England flags for major football tournaments, gaining national media coverage in the process. Residents have mostly watched England matches in small groups because of the Covid-19 risk, but there are plans for a larger gathering if England get to the final.

England play Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday night, after the News goes to print, in a game Gareth Southgate’s men are expected to win. The Three Lions beat Ukraine 4-0 in the quarter-finals last Saturday, July 3, after dispatching old rivals Germany in a historic 2-0 win in the second round. The team has yet to concede a goal after five matches, beating Croatia and the Czech Republic 1-0 and drawing 0-0 with Scotland to top their group.

The GLA did not respond to a further request for comment.

Dappy in bridge rescue

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Former N-Dubz rapper Dappy helped talk a suicidal man off Tower Bridge last month.

A video posted online shows Dappy, whose real name is Costadinos Contostavlos, on Tower Bridge, waiting as friends tell police officers that the man had asked to speak to him. Police eventually let him approach the man. In the video another man advises Dappy not to take a photo with the person he is helping rescue.

Dappy told the man thinking about jumping: “I’m going to drive you to your doorstep. I’m going to take you home.

Please man.” The rapper had reportedly been on Tower Bridge to film a music video.

Dappy’s girlfriend Imani Campbell said in another video posted onto his Instagram Stories page that the man he spoke to was now “alive and well”.

Elephant blaze caused by ‘electrical fault in car’

London Fire Brigade’s investors said last week's fire was most likely accidental and started due to a fault inside a car in a spray booth.

Six hundred people were evacuated from the area after an enormous fireball

and plumes of thick, black smoke erupted from a garage in Elephant Road on June 28 from shortly before 2pm Three commercial units were completely destroyed by the blaze.

Four men left the scene before the Brigade arrived, six people were treated by the London Ambulance Service on site and one person was taken to hospital.

The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took 46 calls to the blaze, which was brought under control by 5.58pm.

The alarm had been raised by a flat resident from an upper floor who could smell smoke coming from below.

The outbreak was under control by 12.57pm with the help of two fire engines and ten firefighters from West Norwood and Norbury stations.

Inspectors now believe the fire started from an extractor fan failure in a ventilation system.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Firefighters arrived to find a small fire within an extraction system in the basement.

“Cannabis factory fires can be

particularly dangerous because of the way criminals use unsafe wiring to illegally obtain electricity in order to grow the plants.

"They're often in top floors or lofts which means when a fire takes hold it spreads, destroying roofs and damaging neighbouring buildings.

"Firefighters can also be exposed to risks when dealing with the fires because of bad wiring and traps at some of the properties.

"It's important that people know the key signs and inform the police so that they can act swiftly to prevent these dangerous fires from happening.”

Firefighters were called to a shop with flats above in Westow Hill on Saturday, July 3 after a blaze broke out shortly after 11am.

Croquet enthusiasts to play game for 26 hours straight

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Two croquet enthusiasts from Dulwich are playing the game for 26 hours straight to raise funds for their club and Parkinson’s UK, after fellow players were diagnosed with the condition.

Guy Scurfield and Peter Haydon hope to raise £5,000 to be divided between the charity and Dulwich Sports Club.

The challenge will begin on Saturday, July 24, with different partners joining for every hour of the event.

“We did the event last year for 25 hours for our local hospice which was great fun, which is why we are doing the extra hour this year,” Guy explained.

“It was so good to get the club as a whole pulling together, wanting to take part and supporting our efforts.

"Seeing the sun rise, and playing the final hour with our wives was pretty amazing.

“We’ve chosen Parkinson’s UK because some club members have Parkinson’s, so we have personally seen the impact that the condition has.

“Croquet helps offset, just a little, the impact of Parkinson’s, which is wonderful. Keeping active generally is really important for helping to manage the symptoms.”

Parkinson’s has no cure and affects around 145,000 people in the UK. Its range of symptoms include tremors, pain and anxiety, but each person diagnosed will be affected differently.

Simona Southgate, regional fundraiser for London at Parkinson’s UK, said: “We are really grateful to Peter, Guy and all those people supporting this fantastic challenge.

We wish them the very best of luck.

“With more than 40 potential symptoms, Parkinson’s can devastate lives.

The former senior probation officer at Camberwell Magistrates’ Court became one of south London’s most recognisable campaigners after her 21-year-old son Leon, a father with another baby on the way, was shot to death on the doorstep of the family’s home in Clapham.

In her search for justice she turned her family’s devastating tragedy into a catalyst for change, teaming up with fellow bereaved parent; Peckham’s Lucy Cope to lobby the government to impose tougher sentences on gun crimes and calling for life to mean life behind bars.

Aveline Street's Alford House is one of four clubs across the city to gain funding and extra support from the Metropolitan Police scheme.

It now has heavy duty doors and an ‘air lock lobby’ which enables staff to monitor who is coming in and out, and prevent passersby from entering the building.

The police are also working with London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service to improve fire safety and to install defibrillators in ten clubs across the capital.

Family of Peckham teenager who went missing 23 years ago launch appeal with £10k reward

Carmel was last seen in Camberwell

The family of a teenage girl who went missing from Camberwell 23 years ago hope a new appeal and £10,000 reward will finally give them answers.

Carmel Fenech, also known as Carmel Pendry, was last seen at Camberwell Magistrates’ Court on May 21, 1998, with an unidentified man.

The sixteen year old never returned home and was reported missing the following month. Police now believe she was murdered, but a body has never been found.

Carmel grew up in North Peckham Estate. At the time of her disappearance, her family had only recently moved out of the city. She still had many friends in the area, including in Brixton and Stockwell.

Last Saturday, July 3, marked what would have been Carmel’s 40th birthday. Her mother, Deidre Fenech, said: "My family has been left in limbo for 23 years.

“Not knowing what has happened to my daughter Carmel has had a devastating effect on my physical and mental health.

“We continue to function because we are a very close family and continue to support each other.

"A huge part of my life is empty without my daughter Carmel.

“Please if anyone has any information concerning her whereabouts or any other information please let us know so we can finally get an answer. I thank you in advance for your help."

Detective Inspector Chris Rambour from the Surrey and Sussex major crime team said that although no trace of her whereabouts has been found, Carmel’s disappearance had not been forgotten by the force.

"We particularly want to identify and speak to the man who Carmel was last seen with on May 21, 1998 as he may be able to provide information that will assist us with locating her.

“There is currently no description of him but he clearly knew her.

"Further lines of enquiry in London were identified by recent reviews and we have been working with the Metropolitan Police to examine these and pursue them where possible, although so far they have not led to any significant developments.

"We have also been keeping in touch with Carmel's mother, Deidre, and have fully discussed the case with her. She will be kept informed of any developments.

"Together, we and Deidre hope that this renewed appeal, combined with the enquiries we are still carrying out, will jog memories and consciences in south London.

“The answer is out there and we really want to find out what has happened and help achieve justice and closure for her family, even after all these years.

"We will always examine and wherever possible follow up any other new information that may lead to new

lines of enquiry."

Glenys Balchin, Crimestoppers’ regional manager for Sussex, said: “No-one can ever imagine the pain and suffering a family must experience when losing a child like this. By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man has been jailed after glassing a woman he met in a Southwark bar and going on to rape another victim while on bail.

Yonattan Aroldy Gonzalez Pineda, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to sixteen-and-a-half years in prison at Wood Green Crown Court on Thursday, July 1.

He had previously been found guilty at the same court on Friday, March 26, following a joint trial for both attacks.

The court heard that on November 30, 2019 Pineda harassed a woman, known to him, at a bar in Southwark whom he repeatedly tried to speak with despite her pleas for him to leave her alone.

After leaving with her friend, Pineda

followed them out and then assaulted his victim, hitting her with a glass bottle, leaving her with cuts to her face. They were able to run to a nearby police station and report the attack, and receive medical help.

Pineda was arrested four days later on December 3 and charged in April 2020 with grievous GBH. He was bailed to appear at Inner London Crown Court for trial the following month, later delayed.

On June 23, he then assaulted, imprisoned and raped a woman who was visiting his house in West Green Road in Haringey.

He was arrested on 4 July and charged two days later, pleading not guilty to all counts for both incidents.

He remained in custody until he was charged on 6 July 2020 with GBH, false imprisonment and rape but maintained he was innocent.

After a two-week trial in March 2021, he was found guilty of two counts of GBH, false imprisonment, and rape.

Detective Constable Myles Bossman, from the Met's north area public protection team said: “Pineda is highly

dangerous individual who had been quite rightly jailed for a significant period of time.

“He has subjected two women who he formed a relationship with to significant violence and has shown no remorse for his actions.

“This sentence is welcomed as it sends a clear message that such acts will not be tolerated.”

Twenty-three-year-old Louis de Zoysa, from Banstead, Surrey, was charged last week with the officer’s murder, as well as possession of a firearm and possession of

Since the incident, de Zoysa has remained in hospital with gunshot wounds and is under police guard. He is in a stable, non-life threatening condition.

In a statement published on Wednesday, June 30, the Met confirmed that recent changes to his condition and a decision by the CPS had resulted in the charge being taken forward.

He appeared in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court the same day, via video link from his hospital bed.

Little take up on Windrush compensation

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Fewer than one in five people affected by the Windrush scandal have claimed support despite being eligible for compensation, leading to fears victims are too afraid to come forward.

On Windrush Day, on Tuesday June 22, Southwark councillor Alice Macdonald wrote to the Home Secretary calling on the government to ensure more people access the compensation to which they are entitled.

Since 2019, thousands of people have found themselves unable to prove they had lawful immigration status despite living in the country

for decades - having previously been told they had leave to remain upon arrival.

In many cases, those affected had come to work in Britain for the NHS and other public services.

Many faced hugely costly legal battles to try and remain in the UK. At least 83 victims are believed to have been legally deported.

As of May 2021, it has been estimated that just nineteen per cent of those eligible for financial support have come forward. Out of 2,367 claims made just 687 people had been awarded payments.

It is not known how many Southwark residents may be entitled to compensation through the Windrush Compensation Scheme, but it is estimated to be fewer than 2,000.

The 2011 census found 7,750 Southwark

residents born in the Caribbean of whom 5,500 held a UK passport and 2,000 held Caribbean/ Americas passports.

Cllr Macdonald says: “Southwark is immensely proud of its diversity and the positive contribution of generations of people from the Caribbean.

“We cannot right the past wrongs, but it is our duty to ensure that our residents receive justice, and where they need support, I want them to know we are here to help them get what is due to them.

“We will hold the government to account on their promise to pay compensation, and we will continue to do all we can to ensure that this atrocity is never forgotten.”

A cross section of MPs, community groups and campaigners have signed the letter.

Attempt to stop the demolition of housing block on Waterloo estate Exclusive

About 50 people gathered on a Southwark estate for a ‘picnic protest’ on Sunday against the proposed demolition of one of their housing blocks.

People on the Dodson and Amigo Estate want to prevent 49-56 Dodson Street - nicknamed Little Dodson - from being knocked down and replaced with eleven council flats. They argue that the six council tenants and one leaseholder currently living in the block should not have to move and the new building should be put up elsewhere. They say they have collected the signatures of 87 residents out of 135 homes who are against the project.

Picnic organiser Jacquie Gilmartin said: “We’ve gained more than momentum, people are listening. Our work is being heard.”

Liberal Democrat councillors for St George’s ward Graham Neale and Maria Linforth Hall came to the protest to hear residents’ views, alongside Southwark planning committee chair Martin Seaton.

“He was talking to me,” Ms Gilmartin said. “I told him: ‘Let me just make one thing clear to

you - we are not going away. You can’t just come in - this is a community, you can’t just rip the people in Little Dodson out of it.

“Before you start ripping estates wide open, you should do stock surveys. There might be people who want to downsize. Southwark should sit down and realise instead of going in all guns blazing. Who’s got what, estate by estate.”

“Anyway, it was a really good day but I’ll go on actions not words.”

The council is still in consultation regarding the site and expects to submit planning permission in autumn this year, according to a newsletter shared with residents.

The council’s newsletter says that 50 per cent of the new flats will go to “existing local residents in housing need”. Building work would start next summer and finish in autumn 2023, if everything goes ahead as planned. All six council tenants believe they have a right to return to the new building when work is completed, according to a note by the tenants’ and residents’ association.

The picnic was supported by local shops and restaurants, including a nearby branch of Krispy Kreme that gave out donuts. People from other estates came, alongside protesters from other groups including Extinction Rebellion - who argue that demolishing and rebuilding blocks is not environmentally friendly - and Southwark Defend Council Housing.

Tanya Murat of SDCH said: “We want new council homes, but people’s homes, environment and facilities must be protected, and estate residents must be allowed to decide what is best for them. No demolition without permission.”

This was the second protest organised by residents in recent weeks, but Ms Gilmartin said it would not be the last and there are more events planned.

E-scooter trial to include Southwark – but you can’t rent them in the borough!

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Transport for London is expanding its e-scooter trial to include Southwark - but you won't be able to rent them in the borough.

People using the e-scooters will now officially be allowed to ride through Southwark on roads, cycle lanes and cycle paths, although it seems likely that this was already happening. You are not allowed to ride e-scooters on pavements.

As part of the expansion, a further 600 e-scooters are now also available to hire in north Lambeth and the City of London, taking the total available in the capital to 1,200. The trial has been running since June 7 in Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea and Richmond.

Tower Hamlets is also a 'ride-through borough' like Southwark.

Some people have raised concerns about safety of e-scooters and their possible links to crime. Riders do not need to pass a test, and users often do not wear helmets or lights.

The Met's Ch Supt Simon Ovens said last year: “I believe that some people are using e-scooters as an attractive mode of transport, especially in their commute to work, but they remain notoriously dangerous."

TfL said safety was its "top priority" as it

continues the trial rollout.

Will Norman, London's walking and cycling commissioner, said: "I'm pleased that London's rental e-scooter trial is expanding to cover the City of London, and parts of Lambeth and Southwark.

Extending the footprint of the trial to more areas will enable us to get a better understanding of the role e-scooters can play in switching car journeys to greener and more sustainable alternatives. Safety continues to be at the heart of our trial, with London's more stringent safety standards also in place in the new large area."

Helen Sharp, TfL's e-scooter trial lead added that the trial of e-scooters is "already providing vital data about the long-term role they could play in a greener and healthier future for the capital.

"Safety remains our top priority and we will continue to closely monitor e-scooters in the new and existing trial areas, making improvements wherever identified," she added.

Philip Glanville, chair of London Councils' transport and environment committee, added that the trial "aims to support London's diverse local communities by being inclusive of the travel needs of all Londoners, especially those on lower incomes."

TfL said it would be looking to expand the trial to more London boroughs in future.

The Joy Slide is back

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The new Bermondsey joy slide has been officially opened, a century after the original was built, and it’s certainly a hit with children playing on it.

The first joy slide in St James’s churchyard on Jamaica Road was commissioned by Arthur Carr, the owner of the nearby Peek Freans biscuit factory. The new slide was designed for free by Fergus Carr, the architect greatgreat-grandson of the factory owner.

The new version, also in the churchyard, has planting on the side, in a nod to former Bermondsey mayor Ada Salter’s radical beautification committee in the 1920s.

Mayor of Southwark Cllr Barrie Hargrove cut the ribbon on the new slide on Wednesday June 30.

He said: “This space here in St James’s Church has always seemed to me like the real heart of Bermondsey… it’s a real honour for me to be here today.

“It’s almost like poetry that Fergus… has been able to contribute and bring

something back that was so much the heart of this particular space.

St James’s vicar Canon Gary Jenkins told the assembled guests: “We have been waiting months - even years - for this to happen. One of the things that I discovered when I became vicar in Bermondsey eight years ago is that there’s a tremendous memory of the joy slide, and I think I’ve scarcely taken a funeral without someone in the family saying ‘we used to come to your church and we used to go on the joy slide.’

And then a whole load of people said ‘isn’t it a shame that there’s no longer a joy slide? And then we had this thought ‘Well perhaps there could be - there could be a joy slide again. To cut a very long story short, there is a new joy slide here in Bermondsey in the 21st century - which children are already enjoying.”

Architect Mr Carr came to the opening ceremony. Canon Jenkins added: “When we had our community fun day to begin raising money for the project, someone came up to us and said ‘Hi, I’m Fergus.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A new stretch of cycleway connecting Deptford with Rotherhithe is set to be built this summer, according to Transport for London (TfL).

The transport agency said that the latest section of cycleway four, which will eventually connect Tower Bridge with Greenwich in a continuous segregated route, will run from Evelyn Street in Deptford into Lower Road, as far as Croft Street.

In September 2020 TfL built a continuous section of segregated cycleway from Tower Bridge to the Rotherhithe roundabout along Jamaica Road, stretching more than a mile. At the south-eastern end of the route, work on the Creek Road section finished in May this year.

When the cycle lane on Evelyn Street finishes, the only remaining section of cycleway four to be built will be the stretch from Lower Road to the Rotherhithe roundabout. As part of this is a one-way system at the moment this is subject to a separate consultation, which is being run by Southwark Council.

Under this Rotherhithe Movement Plan put forward by Southwark Council, the short section of road outside Surrey Quays station would only be open to buses and cyclists, meaning motorists would have to turn right into Redriff Road. Only cyclists would be able to turn right into Lower Road from Redriff Road and Plough Way under this plan. No motorists would be able to turn into Lower Road from Clifton Grove or Croft Street either.

Jonathan Sedgwick, acting archdeacon of Southwark and vicar of St George the Martyr on Borough High Street, said a prayer of dedication for the joy slide.

Canon Jenkins added: “One of the things that caught my imagination when I heard that there had been a slide in the churchyard was its name - the joy slide. I loved the fact that children in the shadow of our church can come and play and have joy.

“Isn’t that a wonderful thing, to give joy to the children in our community?

We believe in a God who loves everyone, who wants to bring his joy into people’s lives.”

After the speeches several children came up and played on the slide perhaps marking its ‘real’ opening.

‘last survivor of bridge on river kwai’ dies aged 104 Lyle and his neighbours winning a gardening award

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey-born man who was thought to be the last surviving British soldier to work on the notorious Bridge on the River Kwai has died aged 104.

Horace George Hutley, known as Lyle, was a Japanese prisoner in south-east Asia for several gruelling years after being captured in 1942 in Singapore.

Lyle was born in Bermondsey on May 19, 1917. He grew up as the second of four siblings and left school at the age of fourteen

to start work as a van boy, later becoming a delivery driver.

He regularly saw a girl called Ivy Simmons as he was cycling home to Lynton Road from his job. One day he plucked up the courage to ask her on a date - and it was “love at first sight: an unconditional love that lasted 60 years,” his nephew by marriage Bill Ripper said.

But in 1940 Lyle was conscripted into the army to serve his country in the Second World War. He joined the Royal Artillery Service Corp aged 22, where he became a gunner and driver.

He was sent across the English Channel to

France, where Allied forces were already in retreat with the German army advancing.

He asked Ivy if she would wait for him, not knowing what lay in store. She said yes.

Lyle’s time in France was defined by the desperate retreat from Dunkirk. He remembered thinking of Ivy as he waited to be picked up by British boats from the

beach while German planes shot at him and his fellow soldiers from above.

At around the same time Ivy and her family had been bombed out of her house twice, with Bermondsey taking a battering from the Luftwaffe in the Blitz. Luckily they survived both attacks.

Lyle made it back to England and had some leave periods where he and Ivy were able to reunite briefly. He was soon told he would be posted to Africa. He asked Ivy to marry him and she agreed. They were wed at St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey Street on May 4, 1941 and had just two weeks of married life together before he was deployed again.

Little did they know that they would not see each other again for four years. As Lyle’s ship docked in Africa, the orders changed and he was sent onto Singapore, where he arrived on February 5, 1942 in the middle of the fighting with the Japanese army. He was captured just ten days later as Singapore fell to the invading force and taken to Changi Prison alongside thousands of others.

The captors gave all detainees a postcard to fill in to send to loved ones back home to let them know they were safe.

Bill told the News in 2017 that Lyle’s one line to Ivy read: “PoW but safe. Hope you are too. Forever in my heart. My undying Love.

Lyle.”

But the prisoners’ postcards were torn up in front of their faces, and they were told they would never see their loved ones again, after the British commanding officer refused

Bermondsey group saves war-torn family

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Syrian family has been rehoused in Bermondsey after escaping their war-torn home country.

The family of four came over to London with the support of local group Bermondsey Welcomes Refugees through the British government’s community sponsorship scheme.

Project coordinator Alaa Khattab, himself a Syrian civil engineer, told the News: “They’re settling well... The thing is, they’re coming from the Syrian conflict, you can imagine the amount of suffering they have had.

“They were refugees to another country first. It’s been very tough for them.”

Mr Khattab said that Bermondsey Welcomes Refugees is trying to protect the family’s identity so does not want to release much information about them personally. “Even some of the other group members don’t have a lot of knowledge about them,” he said.

Bermondsey Welcomes Refugees has also undertaken to help the family settle in during their first year in the UK and build a new life in the country. That includes registering the two children for school, and even helping with basic tasks like shopping. The family only speak basic English at the moment. The group has several Arabic speakers to help them settle in and the family are already taking online English classes.

Things were made more difficult by Covid-19, group project lead Tracy Hart added. One of the biggest challenges was finding a place for the family to stay.

Bermondsey Welcomes Refugees has raised about £10,000 - enough money for several months’ rent.

“Covid made it more difficult to find a landlord,” she said. “We were calling letting agents but couldn’t get viewings, and the proper support we could have got in normal times.

“We put a tweet out and a landlord got back to us to say a property was available. London rental is a fast market

anyway, so when you can’t get an exact date for when the family are arriving, that’s a challenge.”

Between 500,000 and 600,000 people have died in the Syrian civil war, which has lasted for more than ten years.

More than six million people have been forced to flee their homes. Many of these refugees have made perilous journeys to Europe in search of peace and stability.

The British government set up the community sponsorship scheme in 2016 in response to the refugee crisis.

The scheme encourages local groups to sponsor refugees to move to the UK safely and legally. Bermondsey Welcomes Refugees launched in 2019 with the aim of bringing a family over.

Now that the group have successfully brought one family to London, they could try to bring another, Ms Hart said.

“It’s on our agenda,” she added. “We have to get this family settled in. It’s quite a big time commitment.... It will be a collective decision.”

What followed was three years of unimaginable hardship as the prisoners were put to work on the Burma Railway, known as the ‘Death Railway’ because of the thousands of prisoners who died building it.

The period was later commemorated in the well-known film The Bridge on the River Kwai, starring Alec Guinness.

Lyle suffered torture, a starvation diet and beatings. All his teeth fell out, he was malnourished, he had leg ulcers - and had to bury several friends along the way. But he survived and came home in 1946 after the Japanese had surrendered and the war had been won.

Back home, Ivy had taken on the perilous job of fire warden in Bermondsey, not knowing if Lyle was dead or alive.

Incendiaries and bombs continued to flatten the area until the end of the war.

Lyle was just six stone when he came home. Although food was in short supply, Ivy gave Lyle every morsel she could to build up his strength. After a slow recovery he managed to get a job making steel safety doors for dreadnoughts, where he remained until he retired. They moved to Suffolk in the 1960s when Lyle’s company relocated.

Their marriage was never blessed with a family, but they were happy together until Ivy sadly died at the age of 77 in 1997.

Lyle’s funeral is due to take place this Friday, July 9, in Mildenhall in Suffolk.

Nexus Planning, a consultancy, has developed proposals for a scheme that will expand the existing Falmouth Road surgery and ‘cater for 85 per cent more patients’ - around 15,000 extra people.

Southwark Council’s planning committee made a resolution to grant the scheme permission last week, though a formal decision notice and further legal documents have yet to be issued.

Part of the proposals, and the most controversial element, is their pledge to build 39 new homes above the surgery.

Of these, 41 per cent would be classed as ‘affordable housing’. Fifteen per cent are wheelchair accessible.

The car-free development includes roof terraces; a green, biosolar roof; and cycle parking.

The company says it has undertaken ‘detailed engagement’ with people living in the area and conducted reviews with Southwark Council to ensure a ‘high quality’ planning application that integrates well with the refurbished Dickens Square Park.

Rob Pearson, executive director at Nexus Planning London, which is not connected to the Nexus chain of GP surgeries, comments: “We’re excited by this scheme, as we believe it delivers a number of public benefits in a highly sustainable location, including affordable housing, accessible housing, improved and enlarged medical facility.

Those in favour includeTrinity Newington Residents' Association (TNRA), which counts some 400 members. On the council’s public

planning portal, during a public consultation throughout 2020 the vicechair wrote: “TNRA supports the plans.

The design seems to respond well to the local setting in terms of scale and massing, as well as making a positive and considered contribution at street level and through to the Dickens Square park - stepping down from seven storeys on the corner to four along Harper Road and Falmouth Road.”

They added: “Importantly, views from our two squares have already been considered and will have no impact from street level in the two squares.

“The fact that the development will overlook the park will enhance security in the park to the benefit of future residents and park users.

“The inclusion of communal gardens at fourth and roof level is a positive contribution in sustainability terms (replacing green space with green space).”

The group said the ‘40 per cent’ affordable housing provision was ‘very welcome’ as was minimal parking spaces.

Others, however, have described the designs as out of keeping and criticised the decision to build more private housing.

One objector wrote: “This proposal is very clearly not about healthcare provision, nor community wellbeing.

“In fact, this type of construction would necessitate prolonged closure of critical healthcare facilities at this time.

“The council may want to consider the very real reputational risk of eroding community trust by placing public health secondary to an ad-hoc commercial outcome (more unaffordable, housing in an already-saturated market) that does not benefit the local community.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Griffin Sports Ground will become the first in the UK to give priority to women and girls cricket.

The London Youth Sports Trust, a new charity partnership between Lambeth Tigers and Dulwich Cricket Club, is taking over the lease later this year.

The charity says it is investing in the Dulwich Village sports ground’s facilities after striking a deal with the Dulwich Estate. The ground is currently run by King’s College London.

The charity says its mission is to provide sport pitches for young people from state schools and deprived backgrounds and to get more women and girls’ into cricket and football.

It is also hoping to work with other clubs, community groups and get residents involved in the clubs.

As well as becoming the first site in the UK to give priority to women and girls’ cricket teams, the ground will also become a new permanent home for Lambeth Tigers Football Club.

Stephen Grey, chair of the new charity and a parent at Lambeth Tigers said: “The Griffin is going to transform the opportunities available in south London to two groups who are among those with most to gain from community sport - young people growing up with the extreme stress of living in high crime neighbourhoods but who deserve the best, and women and girls, who often take second place in sports grounds

“We are hugely excited to take on this beautiful sports ground, and to develop it as a sporting hub for everyone from all communities and backgrounds.

“It will have lifelong benefits for the children and young people who play football and cricket there.”

Last week Lambeth Tigers, with support from Dulwich Cricket Club, launched a fundraising appeal to help restore the ground. At the time of writing, they had already raised £16,000 toward their £22,000 target.

Lambeth Tigers was formed in 1995 and re-founded ten years ago in the Loughborough and Angeltown Estates in Brixton by two youth workers, David Marriott and Jamahl Jarrett.

Both turned away from involvement in gangs after David’s brother was murdered, and instead focused on the power of football to transform lives.

Jamahl Jarrett said: “Everyone has been talking about the amazing sporting talent that’s coming up from south London – but the facilities on offer do not match the potential.

“We believe every child and young person has an equal right to enjoy quality sport facilities, and the opportunity and development that results from that.

“We see the Griffin as a place that brings kids from all backgrounds and communities together. It’s going to be massive for our club and our players, and it’s going to welcome all.”

Samantha Krafft, membership secretary of Dulwich Cricket Club, said the club was seeing a ‘surge of interest’ from girls in particular, but a shortage of places to play was holding them back.

The club has doubled the size of its women’s and girls’ section to more than 150 in the past eighteen months, in line with cricket’s status as one of the fastestgrowing female sports. The club currently has ten girls, aged between ten and eighteen, in Surrey County Cricket Club’s performance programme.

Women’s head coach Kira Chathli, who plays professionally for the South East Stars and Surrey County Cricket Club, says the ground will be a gamechanger for the sport in Southwark.

“When I started playing cricket at Dulwich, I was pretty much the only girl in the boys’ team,” she said.

“Now, I’m coaching well over a hundred players in girls-only sessions every week.

Horniman given half a million lifeline funding New community funding from Mayor

The beloved south London attraction will get £510,000, much of it earmarked for essential upgrades to its buildings.

The cash is part of a £60 million government investment in heritage across England, divided among twenty organisations including the V&A, Natural History Museum and British Library.

The announcement coincides with London’s first ever ‘festival of ideas’, running until July 23.

Throughout the summer 150 events are being held in community centres, gardens, playgrounds and art studios across the city, with help from City Hall and City Bridge Trust funding.

Many of the groups had come together to support Londoners throughout the

pandemic. Now they are working with City Hall to come up with ideas about how they can help shape the future of the city.

Jailed after dropping ‘samurai-style sword’ in police chase

A Lambeth man has been sentenced to six months in prison for having a Samurai-style sword, after a police chase through south London.

Terrel Doyley, 23, from Stockwell, pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed weapon and drug possession on May 28.

He was sentenced last Tuesday week, June 29, to six months for the weapon offence and one extra day for the drug offence.

The court heard that on November 12 last year at about 4pm a car carrying Doyley was stopped by police while driving along Clapham Common South Side to Balham. As the vehicle stopped,

Doyley jumped from the back seat and ran off.

Officers chased Doyley to Lynette Avenue, a street off Clapham Common South Side, where they caught up and arrested him. Police found that he had cannabis. A bystander also pointed out to officers that Doyley had dropped something as he ran. A samurai-style sword was later found in nearby Cavendish Road.

At the time Doyley was under a gang injunction given by Croydon County Court in January 2019 preventing him from having any bladed article or weapon.

He appeared in front of Croydon Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to Class C drug possession but not guilty to the bladed weapon offence. After being

shown the forensic link between him and the sword he pleaded guilty to both offences.

Detective Constable James Preston, said: “The sentencing reflects a dedicated investigation undertaken by the Central South BCU and the Violent Crime Task Force, and highlights the impact of using police resources and tactics to remove deadly weapons from the streets. The offences Doyley has pleaded guilty to have a serious impact on violence in our communities, and of course there is an inextricable link between drugs and violent crime. Our work is vital to taking dangerous offenders off the streets.

“A big part of the Violence Intervention Unit’s work is to use judicial restrictions granted by the courts, such as Criminal Behaviour Orders and Gang Injunctions,

to help combat violent crime.

“At the time of his arrest, Doyley was subject to a gang injunction, preventing him from possessing a bladed article or offensive weapon alongside other requirements such as avoiding contact with certain areas and named people.

“The extensive list echoes his violent and intimidating behaviour, recognised by the courts as being a legitimate and necessary way to limit the impact of his actions. This compounds the offences he has pleaded guilty to and evidences the necessity for police to use all the resources at our fingertips to prevent high harm and repeat offenders from making decisions which cost lives.”

Bermondsey man provides a running commentary to cops

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey man who chased an alleged car thief hundreds of metres down the road after catching him breaking into cars told him he ‘picked the wrong estate’ to target.

The man, who wants to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, said he was taking his sick dog Archie outside on the Slippers Place Estate on Southwark Park Road at 3am one morning when he “heard a loud bang”.

“I initially thought someone was throwing a bag of rubbish over the balcony,” the man said. “As I came round the corner I was expecting to see a bag of rubbish lying on top of the car. But I actually saw a man with his upper torso in the window, bits and bobs lying around, with smashed glass on the floor there.

“I came right at the right time, if I was a minute or two later I would have missed him,” the man said. “I went up behind him and shouted at him ‘what

the hell are you doing?’ I don’t think he was expecting me there.”

The alleged thief straightened up and initially said he was doing nothing. The man pressed him and he said he was looking for change.

“At that point he started to walk away.

I thought ‘I’m not going to let him do that.’ I started to follow him and he started to run across Southwark Park Road towards Jamaica Road.”

The man chasing decided to call the police as he ran, on the off chance there would be a car patrolling close by.

The alleged thief turned around several times as they were running and begged the man to leave him alone.

“I said ‘no matter where you run, I’m going to keep following you’.”

The man kept on the phone to police, providing a running commentary of the alleged thief’s whereabouts as they ran south-west through the back streets of Bermondsey.

“As we were on Neckinger Estate he saw something against the wall,” the man said. The man he was chasing allegedly picked up a garden pitchfork “He told me to leave him alone or he would stab me with it.

“I said ‘you’ll have to stab me then because I’m not going to leave

you alone’.” The alleged thief soon dropped the pitchfork and ran on into the estate.

The police van arrived a few minutes later. Officers chased the man through the Neckinger Estate and finally arrested him.

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “Police were called at 02:57hrs on Saturday, 26 June after a man was reported to be in the process of breaking into a car in Southwark Park Road SE16.

“He was pursued on foot by a member of the public who kept officers updated via telephone.

“Officers attended and the man was located in the Neckinger Estate. He was arrested on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle and taken into custody.”

The man who gave chase said there had been several similar incidents of cars whose windows had been smashed in on his estate over the past year.

“The best thing to do is to leave nothing in the car, that might save you the pain of having to get your window fixed at least,” he said.

As for Archie - he joined in the chase up to Jamaica Road, before turning round and going back to wait where his owner had left him.

Developers JTRE are building the Appleby Blue Almshouse homes alongside local charity United St Saviour’s, which will manage the building at 94-116 Southwark Park Road.

Appleby Blue Almshouse will be up to five storeys high at some points.

Some locals objected before planning permission was originally given in 2018, arguing that the height of the new building will overshadow the surrounding neighbourhood, which is largely low-rise.

JTRE said the new development of self-contained one and two-bedroom flats will “allow residents to live as independently as possible for as long as possible”. Facilities will include a landscaped courtyard garden, 24-hour shared spaces, a library space, meeting rooms, a spa and wellbeing centre and a rooftop allotment. Some 51 of the flats will be two-bedroom and six will have one bedroom. Eleven of the flats will be fully wheelchair accessible. Building is set to complete in 2022.

The almshouse constitutes JTRE’s affordable housing requirement in return for building its massive Triptych

Bankside luxury development on Park Street near Tate Modern. Triptych Bankside, which will cost £400 million, will have 169 flats when completed next year. Studio flats are currently going for £720,000, with prices for larger properties rising to more than £3 million.

Palace to Paris a runaway success with over £30,000 raised

Lee and Jordan crossing the finish line, and with brother-in-law and Jordan and Lee with ex-News journalist Geoff Hill, who is battling leukaemia

Lee Roberts and Jordan Smith smashed their original target of £15,000 during the challenge which saw them run eleven marathons in just one month without any rest days.

They had come up with the idea of running the equivalent of Selhurst Park to Paris to support ex-News journalist Geoff Hill who was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2017.

After multiple gruelling rounds of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant Geoff has since relapsed and been told there are now limited treatment options.

But he could still gain a place on a clinical trial for a type of pioneering CAR-T cell therapy.

Lee and Jordan set out to raise as much as possible for the charity Cure Leukaemia, telling the News it would

help fund vital research and also show their support for Geoff after a tough year under lockdown.

Last Wednesday, in an emotional end to the challenge, both runners crossed the finish line.

“We only had to run seven km or so on the last day as we’d built up the miles earlier on,” said Lee, “so we probably looked better at the end than we had done on most of the other days.

“We’ve just been blown away really by the level of support and generosity of strangers.

“It has reached a lot more people and gone further than we would have ever expected and donations are still coming in now.

“One day the CEO of Cure Leukaemia joined us for one of the runs and that really put it in perspective how the money will help.

“They solely rely on donations and fundraising to pay for research and nurses.”

A south Bermondsey church is looking to raise £250,000 to completely repair its foundations and interiors after preliminary building works showed it could soon “collapse”.

The Surrey Docks branch of the Christ Apostolic Church on Ilderton Road has already raised £50,000 but needs another £200,000 for “a full renovation,” according to Gabriel Ajakaiye, a youth leader at the church.

The church, which originally dates to the late nineteenth century before later being taken over by the Christ Apostolic Church, has a serious structural problem that means it could collapse if work is not done to repair it, Mr Ajakaiye added.

The church has a local congregation of about 450 people - but since the problems were discovered services have been held in a smaller hall next door, which can only fit about 50 people with social distancing.

older people who may find it harder to use the internet, and for whom the church plays an important social role, Mr Ajakaiye said.

“Older people enjoy the company, they like seeing people every week,” he added. “The past year and a bit have been hard anyway because we’ve been on Zoom, so we want to get back to normal in the main church as quickly as possible.”

As a youth leader who has been going to the church for 27 years, Mr Ajakaiye decided to take up the challenge of raising money on behalf of the next generation of the congregation.

“We wanted to do a bit of fundraising ourselves, because our church is also a place for young people to gather, especially with fewer youth centres in the area these days.”

The church is an outlet for young people in the area. People come here to relax, play music. We have a football team, we do games nights.

It’s a nice little getaway. In a way I think we want to give something back.

Maudsley plans to link mental and physical health with new app

Staff at the Maudsley hospital are the first mental health workers to use a system that helps doctors and nurses from different hospitals work together to stop patients needing to be referred onto another hospital.

Rotherhithe Charity named as Finalist in NatWest SE100 Awards A Rotherhithe based community charity has been named as a finalist in a prestigious annual ranking.

Restorative Justice For All (RJ4All), which is based on Plough Way, is one of the top five groups in the 'growth' category of the Natwest Business SE100 index. The category ranks charities that have expanded in a financially sustainable way over the past year.

RJ4All is due to open a new community centre on July 24, leased from the housing association Clarion.

The community centre will will provide fitness classes, a community library, a wellbeing clinic, room hire, volunteering and internship opportunities, and a community food pantry, among other services.

Dr Theo Gavrielides, founder and director of RJ4All said: “We are honoured to be selected as a finalist for 2020’s NatWest Business SE100 Index listing the UK’s best in #SocEnt and #SE100. 2020 has been one of the toughest years for our communities.

I am proud of the RJ4All team and what we have collectively managed to achieve”.

The news comes after Dr Gavrielides was awarded the Liberty of the Old Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey at the Southwark Civic Awards in April.

He was given the award by Southwark Mayor Cllr Barrie Hargrove in a socially distanced ceremony at the Rotherhithe Community Centre on Wednesday (April 21).

RJ4ALL stepped in to help hand out food and personal protective equipment at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The group also ran a mental health support initiative called You Are Not Alone.

SE5’s yarn stormers were back bigger and better than ever at the 27th Camberwell Arts Festival last month.

Around 40 people turned ten trees in Camberwell Green into public works of art with the help of woollen decorations.

It was one of many activities across the event, which is the UK’s longest running visual festival.

Among those taking part were pupil from Lyndhurst School, pictured installing their colourful creation.

South London and Maudsley hospital NHS trust (SLaM) staff have been using phones, tablets and an app to get on the Consultant Connect app and talk to their counterparts from Guy's, St Thomas', King's College and Lewisham hospitals about their patients. SLaM staff used the system more than 650 times over the past year.

This is important because people with mental health problems are more likely to have physical issues than other members of the general population.

The system is also useful because it saves staff using up time calling switchboards at other hospitals.

In two-thirds of cases the conversation with a specialist at one of these other hospitals meant the SLaM clinician could treat their patient’s physical health condition without the need to refer them on to another hospital - which was particularly important during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Consultant Connect has been used by staff at other NHS trusts for a while but SLaM is the first mental health trust to pick it up, as part of its plan to integrate mental and physical health. Clinicians

can contact hospital doctors in more than 80 specialties. About half the calls are made to specialists in diabetes, endocrinology or cardiology.

Ray McGrath, lead nurse with SLaM’s Integrating our Mental and Physical Healthcare Systems project, said: “We spoke to around 200 staff and quickly established that one of their primary concerns was spending so much time seeking advice from partners in physical healthcare when an issue could be resolved in just minutes by connecting with colleagues more easily.

“Many of our patients have multiple complex physical health conditions on top of their mental ill health.

Our clinicians need to be able to support conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease – as well as meeting patients’ mental health needs.

Connecting our clinicians to specialists in the acute hospitals means they can get advice quickly and, potentially, avoid a hospital admission or referral.”

Mr McGrath added: “Acute hospital are difficult settings to care for patients in mental health crisis but, during the Covid-19 pandemic the potential of Consultant Connect really began to shine through because it became really important to avoid unnecessary transfers between hospitals due to increased infection risk.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’s has donated £50,000 to a home run that gives families a place to stay when their children are being treated in the nearby Evelina London hospital.

Ronald McDonald house on Lambeth Road has 59 bedrooms for families of sick children. Brighton-based Willian Oliveira and Vanina Sosa have often stayed there when their young son Noam has been getting treatment for his serious muscle condition.

Three-year-old Noam has nemaline myopathy, which makes his muscles weaker, especially in his chest.

Because of this he has breathing problems and trouble swallowing and coughing, which makes him susceptible to infection.

The family’s local hospital in Brighton does not have the facilities

to reat Noam, so he has to come to Evelina London. He has spent much of his life there, including six months at Evelina London just last year.

Another four months were spent in different hospitals.

Willian said: “It can be so stressful when your child is in hospital, so having somewhere comfortable and welcoming so close to the hospital helps to put our mind at rest. The Ronald McDonald House allows us to focus on Noam’s recovery, which is the most important thing to us.

“It is an amazing place. All of the staff there are so kind, from the management, to the receptionists, to the cleaners and security.”

Noam is now home and recovering well. Willian said: “Noam’s muscles are getting stronger each day and he’s doing really well. He’s such an

‘Ground breaking’ - new mental health centre for young people A virtual ‘ground breaking’ event has taken place for a new mental health centre for young people in Denmark Hill.

Building work has begun on the £65m Pears Maudsley Centre for children and young people in the grounds of the Maudsley Hospital. The new facility is due to open in 2023 and will combine treatment and research facilities.

About half of the mental health conditions people have as adults begin by the time they reach fourteen. This figure stands at 75 per cent by the age of 24. Young people with disorders that affect their behaviour are twice as likely to leave school without any qualifications, four times more likely to become dependent on drugs and twenty times more likely to get a prison sentence than people without those conditions.

The new centre was developed by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and King’s College London. The Maudsley Charity and the Pears Foundation also gave support, alongside several other donors.

were involved in designing the eightstorey building, alongside their families, researchers and doctors and nurses.

Patients involved emphasised the need for some connection with nature in the new building, including being able to see and feel part of nearby green space.

The design includes landscaped outdoor terraces with plants on each floor.

Trust chair Sir Norman Lamb said: “This unique building will bring together a special partnership of the clinical excellence of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and groundbreaking research from King’s College London – which has the leading child and adolescent mental health research team in Europe.

“The centre will support our local south London community which has some of the highest levels of deprivation in the country, together with national services that are available to everyone in England, and expand the impact of our international reach.”

David Bradley, chief executive of south London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust said: “After so many years of hard

work, by so many people it is inspiring to see the building beginning to emerge from the ground.

“This project is rooted in partnership and collaboration and our collective commitment to improving the lives of children and young people has never been more important. Together we have the chance to achieve something life changing here and to improve the quality of life for generations to come.”

A BAFTA-award winning director from East Dulwich made a heartwarming video for the first annual 'Thank You Day'

Nick Holt created the video, commissioned by pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences, for last weekend’s day of recognition for key workers, held on Sunday, July 4.

The video highlights the fantastic work of one young person during COVID-19; Norfolk-based Denver Bardell, who helped make care packages and ‘sunshine bags’ for key workers and people in her community.

Speaking about her time during lockdown, Denver says: “I liked that we didn’t have to go to school, but I did miss going to nanny’s house, although we did go past their house and wave when we did our exercise.

“To help me during lockdown, we created a jar of all the things we couldn’t do. When lockdown was over, mummy said we could do one of those things each week.

“I’ve never been in a film before, so I thought it would be a chance for me

“On Thank You Day, I feel a renewed gratitude for NHS staff. I have worked with the NHS as a filmmaker, but this year my partner gave birth to our first child and I was hugely thankful for the care and love they showed us.”

Could blood transfusions help pregnant women with sickle cell?

THE TAPS2 trial at Guy’s and St Thomas’ is asking pregnant women with sickle cell disease to take part in a study to better understand treatment options available during pregnancy.

Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited health conditions that affect red blood cells and can cause a number of complications. Pregnant women with sickle cell disease have an increased risk of complications including raised blood pressure.

Their babies are also at higher risk

of some illnesses.

We are keen for women with sickle cell disease who are in the

early stages of pregnancy (up to 18 weeks) to take part in the study. Some of the women taking part will be given blood transfusions throughout their pregnancy while others will be provided with standard care, and the results compared.

We also want to talk to women who do not want to take part in the study, to understand what might stop them from getting this kind of treatment.

Close the loopholes to protect rape victims

L

ast year 342 rapes in Southwark were reported to the police. It is a horrific crime. But the government has acknowledged, and even apologised, for its woeful failure to ensure justice for victims of rape.

If you report a drug offence there is a 20.9 per cent chance of someone being charged. But for rape allegations, only 1.4 per cent end up with the suspect being charged.

In practice, as the Victim’s Commissioner has said, rape has been “decriminalised”.

The government has promised to try and sort out this problem which, though always bad, has got worse since the Conservatives took power in 2010.

And while there are many changes that need to be made, there’s one improvement the government should make right away.

For decades it’s been recognised that the criminal justice process is an ordeal for a rape victim.

Many victims feel shame and embarrassment to report a sexual experience.

It’s awful for a victim who’s been raped by a stranger in an attack, for example in a park, to endure his defence that she consented to sex with

someone she’d never met before.

And defendants will habitually claim that she consented, dragging her sexual history into court.

They want to make her abandon the prosecution rather than face all her previous sexual activity being spoken about in court.

They seek to tarnish her reputation with the jury claiming, for example, that she’d previously committed adultery and therefore must be the sort of person who would have agreed to sex with the defendant.

It’s been acknowledged since the 1990s that it’s wrong for him to try and prove she consented to sex with him because she’d had sex with other men before.

Yet research shows that this is exactly what happens in a third of all rape trials.

In one recent case the complainant was distraught to hear the defence, without warning, give evidence that she’d previously had an abortion.

Her parents who’d come to court to support her had no idea about the abortion till her medical records were read out.

The law prohibits the naming of complainants of sex offences. That is a longstanding rule which had to be brought in because otherwise

complainants were not prepared to go to court because of the fear of their “dirty linen being washed in public”.

But while that rule could be relied on to protect complainants when it was a matter of experienced journalists reporting cases, it doesn’t work in the same way in this era of social media.

Anything said in court, and heard by people sitting in the public gallery, can instantly go out on social media.

The anonymity of Twitter users means it is effectively impossible to police the right to anonymity of rape complainants. So, what happens in court is more important than ever.

With the backing of MPs from all parties I’ve proposed a way to tighten the law to make it work in the way parliament has always intended.

The defendant will still get a fair trial but the complainant’s right to privacy will be protected. The government says it agrees that there’s a problem but has referred it for consideration by the Law Commission which might take years to report.

This has been a problem for years.

We don’t want many more to go by before we get justice for rape victims.

The government can and must close this loophole now.

Government will have to do more than legislate as we face more and more teenage killings

F

ears of a new wave of stabbings and murders across London after lockdown have been realised.

As ‘freedom day’ fast approaches, and we enter the summer; traditionally a knife crime peak - how many more lives will be lost?

Violence didn’t go away during lockdown - it was simmering. Teenage killings are now at their highest level since 2008, even though the Met says violent crime is down overall.

It is a trend that is particularly pertinent for Londoners. Youth stabbings and murders are some of the most visible types of crime, and the most devastating for a community.

This is something campaigners like the late Michelle Forbes and her Mothers Against Guns cofounder Lucy Cope have long argued: one murder has multiple victims across the generations, each death starts a ripple of pain among family, friends and across a whole community.

There are high levels of other types of crime in pockets of Southwark whether, as Harriet Harman discusses in her column this week, sex crimes, or robberies and muggings which are well-known in hotspots near London Bridge and Bermondsey.

Yet overall crime has consistently fallen over the last three decades, and the likelihood of becoming a victim of violent crime in this country is now far lower than in the 1990s.

In 1994 around 4.7 per cent of people in England and Wales were victims of violent crime - that figure is now around 1.6 per cent.

But as long as our most vulnerable children and teenagers are at risk of very specific types of violence - often gang or drug related - this progress will be thwarted and we will still feel that the authorities have lost control of the situation.

Many of the changes campaigners fought for, including tougher sentencing, are coming as the government launches its huge shakeup of the justice system. This may help stop some county lines gangs, or older criminals exploiting young people. But how will it protect their young victims?

But the police’s capacity has been cut, and heavily eroded children’s and youth services mean that the Met is bearing the brunt of social problems that the courts are ill-equipped to resolve long term. The government will have to do more than legislate and police its way out of this problem.

Historic England give £30,000 to tell the story of the area

The Walworth Society has bagged a £30,000 grant from Historic England for a landmark two-year research project into the people who have made the area home over the last 200 years, writes Katherine Johnston...

Walworth grew rapidly in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and became home to many people settling in London from overseas.

The ‘Walworth Stories’ project will explore some of the families and wider communities who helped create the

Walworth we know today.

The funds will support two parttime researchers as they delve into the archives and examine the area’s rich history of migration. There will also be the opportunity for other local researchers to get involved, and a series of talks and events. Southwark Council has also committed £6,450 toward the project.

Jeremy Leach, who chairs The Walworth Society, said: “We could not be more pleased that Historic England has chosen to support this project.

“For the past few years, the society has held a number of History Festivals and other events that have helped us to begin to tell the story of this remarkable but overlooked part of south London.

“We are sure that there are a huge number of untold stories waiting to be unearthed and, with the help of Historic England, we cannot wait to bring them to life and share them more widely with people in Walworth, London and further afield.”

The society’s research will build

on work already undertaken by Southwark historians Neil Crossfield - who regularly writes for the News on Walworth’s Italian community and their influence in the area, and Diana Cochrane’s work on the architectural history of the high street.

It is hoped the research could lead to a book, and a legacy of work that will be permanently archived in Southwark.

Historic England’s regional director for London and the south-east, Emily Gee, said: “The movement of people to and from England through time has shaped who we are and the architectural makeup of our streets.

“By exploring and drawing together the connections between people and place we hope Walworth Stories will enrich people’s understanding of the area’s history and celebrate the diverse communities which have influenced the development of this fascinating part of South London.”

Milne took 4 for 38 and defended 18 in the final over, bowling Ollie Pope with the fourth delivery and getting Kyle Jamieson caught on the long on boundary with the penultimate ball to clinch an exhilarating win.

He then had Laurie Evans caught off the last ball of the innings to seal an astonishing recovery.

Surrey looked heavy favourites when Will Jacks smashed a Blast-best score of 87 from 54 balls, but after putting on 92 for the second wicket with Laurie Evans, who finished on 57, the run rate steadily increased.

Kent had posted a challenging 191 for four, thanks to another hefty partnership between Jordan Cox and Jack Leaning, who hit 61 not out and 50, respectively.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Kent lost skipper Daniel BellDrummond to the second ball of the innings, lbw to Jacks, for nought.

Zak Crawley made 24 before he was bowled by Jordan Clark and Joe Denly top-edged Gus Atkinson to Ollie Pope for 36. The run rate slowed to four in overs nine to 11, before, not for the first time this season, Leaning and Cox rescued Kent with a stand of 90 for the fourth wicket.

Leaning reached 50, although he was out next ball, driving Overton to Clark, whose final over went for 19, Alex Blake hitting 12 not out and Cox ending the innings with a six over

cow corner.

Surrey made a ferocious start. Fred Klaassen ripped out Jamie Smith’s middle stump for 9, but Evans and Jacks batted through the next 10

year old leg spinner taking all four to finish with 4-27 off 12.4 overs.

Peterson bowled his full allotment of 14 overs to finish with 5-23 and take his tally for the season to 14 wickets in only four matches.Dorking were dismissed in 41.4 overs for 105, which coincidentally is the same score they made the last time the two sides met on this ground. Dennis remained undefeated on 27, having faced 79 balls.

Dulwich had 41 overs to get the runs, and seemed determined to use all of them. The Dorking attack was launched by Kieron Corbett and former Dulwich player Kamran Munawar. They took a wicket apiece, with Munawar having Chris Purshouse lbw for a single and Corbett getting Lachlan Skinner caught behind for 4. Frankie Brown thus joined opener Ollie Steele at 23-2 in the 13th over. The pair batted circumspectly, scoring at barely two runs an over, but

ensuring that Dorking made no further breakthroughs. They had just begun to accelerate and had taken their partnership to 60 off 23.4 overs when Brown was bowled for 28, off 63 balls, to make it 83-3 after 36 overs. Matt Marfani was stumped for 6, off eight balls, with the score on 92. Michael Harms came in with 14 runs needed off 15 balls, and he scored them all himself off the next nine balls to secure victory with an over to spare. Steele had become becalmed in mid-innings, at one stage making just one scoring shot (for two runs) off 40 deliveries, but he stayed to finish undefeated with 45, off 132 balls.

Dulwich thus complete the first half of the season having won seven of their nine matches and sitting in top spot, one point ahead of Bank of England. They have a 47 point lead over third placed Old Wimbledonians, whom they play next week in the first of the return fixtures.

Kent’s Milne said: “It’s my first ever hat-trick so it’s special. We’ve always had tight, nail-biting games against Surrey. With the bowling I got us off to a horrendous start, but Fred [Klaassen] bowled well and the last ten overs we managed to claw it back and close it out quite nicely, taking some wickets through the back end and bowling some tight overs.

“After the first ten overs I felt a little bit like the Somerset game where we were battered all round, but Qais [Ahmad] bowled brilliantly well to keep [Surrey] in check for his four overs, which was remarkable bowling to that small side. He kept us in it. It was a bit of a horrendous hat-trick, they were all slot balls. Jameson’s went to the moon and back, so it was a good catch from [Jack] Leaning. I was surprised it even came down it was that high, I thought it had snow on it.”

Surrey’s Evans went on to say: “I thought the way that we started with the bat was outstanding. Jacks is turning into one of the best in the country at the top of the order and it’s just great to see him keep going in this tournament. I felt like we had it in the bag the whole way and we just didn’t finish it off. It’s bitter to swallow at the minute. Credit to Jordan Cox, he played a blinder there and it’s just one of those days.”

Dulwich invited their opponents to bat, and reaped the rewards as Hugo Peterson launched a devastating opening salvo to take five of the first six wickets, with skipper Jon Lodwick taking the other one.

Dorking were thus reduced to 43-6 in the 17th over. John Gale and Tommy Dennis then added 46 in 13.3 overs for the seventh wicket, taking the score to 89. Gale’s dismissal, caught off Ahmed Khan for 33 off 51 balls, led to a late collapse as the last four wickets fell for 16 runs, with the 16

By Michael Avery sport@southwarknews.co.uk Millwall Lionesses’ assistant manager, Alex Russell, said that the squad are determined to give it their ‘best’ when they compete in the fifth tier of women’s football in the 2021/22 season.

The Lionesses have a number of upcoming pre-season fixtures prior to their new campaign in the London and South East Region Women’s Premier Division, and Russell said of the work put in by the side: “The preparation has been superb. The girls have turned up eager to perform and to kick the season off in as best shape as possible - which is what everybody wants to see. We have also recently introduced Ellie Hills and Briony Rampling into the camp in the way of putting on fitness and strength and conditioning sessions, which is always everybody’s favourite part of pre-season. Our pre-season fixture list is complete, and takes us up until the season commences, and it’s just about going out and getting the job done next.

Hopefully, this will be the first complete season ahead since the Millwall Lionesses have come under the Millwall Community Trust umbrella, after two curtailed seasons, and we’re determined to give it our best go.”

Russell commented on how excited he is to work with the current squad but said that they will also be adding to the retained squad from last season: “I’m buzzing with the current crop. We will of course be adding to that list, but like the men’s, we want to add players based

on being the right fit - both mentality wise as well as ability. To quote a couple of the players, the mood in camp in the opening three or four sessions has been ‘unmatched’ and when you’re enjoying yourself is when you’ll play your best football, in my opinion.

“An area that I would like to see improved is just getting some squad depth through the door, as our current retained list is a superb core. I would just like to build on that and get some competition for places through the door, so that we’re pushing their peers to be the best that they can be prior to getting the season started. This will always ensure we’re at our sharpest and will give Katie Whitmore and I a headache when it comes to team selection - it will be a good headache to have. I’d like to think that it’ll be a competitive pre-season campaign, as most of our opposition are at or around our level, and they’re all new opponents to us too. They’ll be good tests in the sense of we don’t know what to expect, so we’ll prepare for each game the same and as best as we can.

Although expectations for a club of Millwall Lionesses’ stature and history is always going to be high, Russell was realistic of the challenge ahead and said that getting ‘points on the board as early as possible’ and cementing their place in the division is the main priority: “I’m hoping to get as many points on the board as early as possible, and just look to consolidate [next season], and anything more is a bonus. However, looking at some of the faces through the door at the moment on trial, I wouldn’t

underestimate what they can achieve.

The sky is the limit for the girls, and after two curtailed seasons, I’m hoping they can just go out there and compete on a consistent basis with no interruptions to their schedule. Of course, that is out of our control unfortunately, but I think consistent, competitive football is the least that these girls deserve after the last 12-16 months we’ve had.

In addition to the feel-good factor around the current side, Russell had words of praise for the Millwall fans, who along with providing support on match days, have also supported the club with both volunteering off the field, and financially with players sponsorships: “There’s nothing I’d love more than to have as many fans as possible through the door. As a Millwall fan myself,

sending the girls out there to put on an entertaining display for the fans is always so relatable, as I’ve been there amongst that crowd. Many teams will be fully aware at what a packed-out stadium can do for a squad morale-wise - ‘the 12th player’ it’s referred to sometimes, but not many people realise that having Millwall fans there in numbers becomes your 12th, 13th, 14th or even 15th extra player. 200 sound like 2000, and most of this current crop haven’t had the opportunity to play in-front of a fiery fan base. With this new league that we’re in, we’re surrounded by derby games, such as Dulwich Hamlet, Dartford and Fulham and I cannot wait.

“I’ve said in a previous interview, the Millwall fans are a class act, even down to the staff behind the scenes and the

Millwall Supporters’ Club. They’re all fans working tirelessly for their love of the club, without any real recognition or reward. Millwall Lionesses rely heavily on sponsorships currently, such as player sponsorships and match day sponsorships and Millwall fans have dug deep to support us throughout, and I can’t commend them enough for it. They won the campaign throughout lockdown - the Charity Deadline Day - where they ‘out-donated’ the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea, and they really are the biggest small club in the world. By Jake Sanders sport@southwarknews.co.uk George Saville reckons he has unfinished business at Millwall and says that he’s returned with the hope of achieving something special in SE16.

Saville, 28, became Gary Rowett’s fifth summer addition last Friday when he sealed a sensational return to The Den for what will be his fourth spell with the club.

He enjoyed two brief loan stints with the Lions as a youngster before signing permanently following their promotion through the play-offs under Neil Harris in 2017.

Saville quickly became a key part of the midfield alongside Shaun Williams, scoring a career-high 10 Championship goals to help Millwall finish eighth, narrowly missing out on the top-six despite going 17 matches without losing.

However, he left to join Middlesbrough on Deadline Day at the beginning of the 2018-2019 season, although he told The News that he

never wanted to leave in the first place: “It was difficult, we had a fantastic group there and had an unbelievable season – it was probably my best season to date on a personal level.

“But at the time Middlesbrough were going for automatic promotion and were throwing big money around, so it was a decision taken out of Millwall’s hands and my hands because of the money that was being paid.

“It was not a case of wanting to leave, it was a case of this is what is happening and is out of your hands.

“You know what they say, don’t go back to a place that you’ve been.

We came up to the Championship and came eighth. It was a little bit of a rocky season after that, but the last two years have been stable. The manager has come in and pushed the club in the right direction, so I wanted to come back and I want to achieve something special.

“This is my fourth spell now.

Since Kenny Jackett gave me the opportunity to experience first-team football, I’ve always looked out for the club, tracked the club and have always been happy to see them do well, and

even when I do leave and am older, I will always follow Millwall.”

Saville had just one year left on his Boro deal but until recently, hadn’t considered a return to South Bermondsey.

However, when the chance presented itself to the midfielder, turning it down never crossed his mind.

Saville said: “My agent said there was interest, and a deal could be done, so I spoke to Middlesbrough, and it suited all parties. I was heading into my last year, so it suited Boro and suited myself because everyone knows that I am very fond of Millwall football club.

“Towards the end of the season there was nothing, no talks. It was a busy season, but I had international fixtures as well, so I didn’t think too much about it and then towards the end of June there was talks and then when they gave me the decision, it was a no-brainer.”

But why is now the right time for Saville to return for a fourth stint at The Den? “The club are progressing,” the 28-year-old admitted. “The last couple

of years they’ve had good finishes in the league, and speaking to people at the football club, they were quite disappointed with that. The boys won once in 15, so a couple of wins in there and they could have finished higher.

So just the progression of the club, stability of the club, financially it’s a very well-run football club, fantastic owner, and obviously the manager is taking the football club in the right direction, so there’s a lot to admire, and I want to be a part of it.”

Millwall finished eighth in Saville’s last season, and repeated that feat in Rowett’s first year at the club before coming close once again in 20202021 – eventually falling short and come 11th.

Despite five impressive signings already made by the Lions boss, few will have Millwall as one of those sides to finish in those top-six positions.

But Saville knows that anything can happen in one of the most unpredictable leagues in the world.

He said: “I’d say there’s probably 16 clubs in the Championship that can make the play-offs. I think it’s about making sure we start well and give us a platform to really kick on towards

the end of the season.”

“There’s a fantastic group of lads here already, and a good spine, so for the new lads that have signed, hopefully we are just adding to that quality. He’s a good manager, he seems a good guy, I have heard good things, he’s got a proven track record at previous clubs. So, for me, it’s about getting the trust from him, and working hard to do my best so I can perform to the best of my ability.

Saville has played in front of some memorable atmospheres at The Den, perhaps none better than against Fulham at the end of 2017-2018, but following 18 months without supporters, he cannot wait to hear them back in action.

“I’m Buzzing,” said the midfielder.

“The last 18 months have been difficult, there are some games that have been flat, but especially with Millwall fans, I’m buzzing for that first game.

“I experienced it [The Den], the London games, Leeds at home, the Norwich game at home when we won 4-0, the atmosphere is unbelievable, and the players are as excited as the fans.”

Rowett: I am confident Benik will score goals

The 28-year-old striker has endured a difficult few years through injury and spent last season on loan with Turkish outfit Trabzonspor - netting just five times in 29 Super Lig appearances.

Afobe had spent the previous campaign with Bristol City but suffered an ACL injury which forced him to miss eight months, only returning to action when the Championship season resumed following the break for the pandemic.

But Afobe is now back in familiar surroundings having secured a season-

Rowett yet to make key Burey decision Gary Rowett is considering all possible scenarios in Tyler Burey’s development as he weighs up whether to send the 20-year-old out on loan or keep him as part of the first team at Millwall.

Having spent the majority of his first year with the Lions in the Under-23s set-up, Burey became a regular part of Rowett’s senior squad last season – appearing 15 times in all competitions.

His solitary start came in the FA Cup victory at Boreham Wood back in January, although the former AFC Wimbledon youngster often came off the bench late in games, featuring in all but one of Millwall’s final five Championship fixtures.

19-year-old Hayden Muller has already joined St Johnstone on loan, which is where Danny McNamara gained valuable experience last season.

But Rowett is going to assess Burey in pre-season before coming to a decision over his next steps.

He said: “When you have a young player that’s been on the cusp of the first-team and has played some games and has made some

appearances, all the youngsters that we have got, we see as Millwall first-team players, so the question we ask ourselves is how can we get them into the first-team? What’s the best route? There’s not always one perfect answer.

“Sometimes it’s training with the first team, sometimes it’s being around the group and appearing off the bench and then occasionally we think he needs that 20 or 30 game opportunity to then do what Danny McNamara did and I think Tyler is in that boat.

“Whatever is the best scenario will play itself out, depending on opportunities, depending on how his pre-season goes, but he’s a player we think a lot of, and he’s done well for us, and we want to try and help him to make the next step, whether that’s out on loan or with the team, we will see.”

All Burey’s 14 league appearances for Millwall have come from the bench, but does Rowett believe the winger is ready for a first Championship start?

“I think he’s proven in training that he can perform to that level,” said the Lions boss. “I think that challenge

is, until you put someone in to start the games you don’t know if they can handle the emotional side of it with the fans and all different things.

“But he’s a talented boy, he’s very athletic, he’s got a great attitude, he works hard, but a bit like Hayden [Muller] we need to make the right decision to accelerate his development and we’re openminded to what that is really.”

“You have got a very motivated Benik Afobe and he’s at an age where he wants and needs that top season, that he’s capable of doing,” he said. “From a family point of view, he’s back down South and a little bit closer to his family.

“We all know what him and his partner went through a few years ago, so that makes being around family important to you. So, there’s a mix of putting Benik into a good environment, where he’s enjoying his football and we hope, and we think that within that I am very confident Benik will score goals.

“I have got a massive belief in his ability as a forward, but we have got to offer him those other factors that will give him the chance to score the goals he has before. He’s mobile, he will work hard, he will press, he knows what runs to make and I have worked with him before, so it was quite an easy fit.

“At Millwall, I speak to Harvey a lot about what we want to find in players and one of those is a hunger and a real reason to be motivated.

“He fit the bill like most of the players we bring in and hopefully him brings that little bit of drive and desire to the group. Whether you’re 28 or 22, it’s important that we’ve got the right characters in that will try and push the team forward.”

sport@southwarknews.co.uk Gary Rowett thinks that Millwall got an excellent deal in bringing George Saville back to the club and reckons they should have the midfielder in the prime years of his career.

Saville is now settling back into life at The Den following his return to the club late last week and will be hoping to hit the ground running when the Lions start their Championship campaign at QPR next month.

He scored just 11 league goals in his three years at Middlesbrough, only one more than he managed in his final season at Millwall, but Rowett is confident that Lions fans will still see the best of him.

He said: “He’s a player that we’re aware may have been available. I had a good chat with George about the issues around coming back to a club you’ve been at previously. We had a good internal discussion about him fitting the profile about what we’re after and from a club perspective it was a deal that we

thought was a very good one.

“He’s just turned 28, and you could argue a real peak age for that position and really fit the profile for that goalscoring midfielder that we wanted to add, so it pitched together quite quickly.”

During his last season at Millwall, Saville played in a two alongside Shaun Williams, although he was asked to play in several different positions during his three years with Middlesbrough – even out wide on the odd occasion.

When asked his best position, Rowett said: “A central midfield role where you can let him go a little bit and give him the licence to break forward, whether that’s in a two, whether that’s in a three, whether that’s just behind the front-two – there are different ways.

“He’s an intelligent player, he’s an intelligent person, George, and it’s nice to have a player that can understand when to release and that timing of arriving in the box, he’s going to be quite flexible.

“But more importantly having footballers that want to win and have that real edge about them and that little bit of extra quality.”

The Lions have already made three permanent signings in George Long, Scott Malone, and the returning George Saville, whilst Daniel Ballard and Benik Afobe have joined on season-long loan deals.

Rowett and his squad headed off for Scotland yesterday as part of their preparations for the new

Championship season, and whilst Rowett is delighted to have been trusted by the club’s hierarchy, he told The News that he could still dip back into the market should things change in the coming weeks: “We have got to be sensible. I think that having bought five players in and a few players leaving having been out of contract, we have got to make sure we balance the books as well as retain that bit of ambition.

“Is there a player out there that we feel can make us better? That’s how I look at it as a manager and along the way I will speak to the club.

“I don’t want to put the club under

pressure and ask for five more players because that’s not fair having been backed really well this summer.

But at the same time, if we can create some more headroom to bring in one or two more players in, then we will certainly look to do that.

“I’m happy with the squad, but as a manager you’re always looking to improve the team.”

Rowett has already signed one striker in Afobe but failed to rule out making a move for 18-year-old Manchester City frontman Liam Delap.

Rowett knows that he won’t be short of interest.

He said: “There’s lots of good players out there, he’s a top young player, but I’d imagine nearly every Championship club will have him on their list of players they’d like to bring in. I know the family well, but I’m not going to speculate about other teams players.

“As pre-season goes on, sometimes you don’t want to make all your signings straight away. You pick up an injury, someone is out of form, or you see a gap in your squad, so I’m going to leave that one open and see what we need.”

Sav says brave Ballard will suit Millwall

The 21-year-old secured a seasonlong loan move from Arsenal last week, becoming Gary Rowett’s third summer addition - just 48 hours before he was joined by his Northern Ireland teammate Saville.

Ballard arrives with little first-team football to his name, and hasn’t yet tested himself at Championship level, but the centre-back more than held his own in League One with Blackpool last season – helping the Seasiders earn promotion through the play-offs.

Despite not making a single appearance at this level previously, Ballard is a regular for Northern Ireland and has already won five caps following his debut against Romania in the Nations League back in September, two weeks shy of his 21st birthday.

But whilst the defender is short of Championship experience, he’s already got facing Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland on his CV, and Saville is more than confident that he can cope with the demands of the second tier.

“He’s brilliant,” he said. “I’ve got no concerns over Dan; he’s got great maturity for his age, good experience, he went out and had a good year at Blackpool. He’s played international level with me, held his own and had some brilliant performances. So, for me, Dan is a great signing, he’s fantastic for the football club, and the way he plays, his bravery, I think he’s going to really suit Millwall.”
