The group, formed in early February,

brought together officials from Southwark’s hospitals, council and others to “monitor areas of concern” and provide “local leadership.”

Minutes of three-months of private meetings obtained under Freedom of Information laws by the News, reveal a snapshot of pressures faced by those responding to the crisis from its beginnings in February to its peak in April.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A 20mph speed limit along Peckham High Street is due to go ahead, TfL said on Tuesday.

The change, first proposed earlier this year, is among changes to the busy road which the authority says is needed to reduce road deaths.

It would affect the stretch of road between Basing Court and Mission Place. As the News has reported, there have been three fatal collisions on the road since 2015.

Among them are 48-year-old Jason Bent, who died in a collision with a lorry in January.

Other changes proposed for the busy road include a widened westbound cycle route, and raised road crossings near Bellenden Road, Sumner Road and Rye Lane.

TfL hopes this will encourage more motorists to drive slowly at the crossings. Construction would go ahead later this year, subject to funding from the Department for Transport.

case, gloves were omitted from a national government emergency delivery of PPE. “PPE is being monitored daily,” stated a meeting on April 2.

“There is an issue regarding the availability of gloves, as these were not included in the emergency national stock delivery. These issues are being escalated via multiple channels.”

Community pharmacists also suffered from a “national lack of stock” from wholesalers supplying NHS England, the minutes note.

Fears were also raised of potential over-use of PPE by staff, and changes in government guidance putting strain on available supplies of PPE. As the News has previously reported, officers say they have never ran out of PPE equipment during the crisis.

However, it has “been close to the wire sometimes,” a public council meeting was told in May. Other issues discussed by the private committee include a lack of soap in council buildings.

“The group decided that this was a general day-to-day issue and that soap should be available irrespective of COVID-19,” a meeting on February 28 found.

“Unsustainable testing volume is putting significant pressure on Trusts,” claimed one committee member, while another said King’s College Hospital was “lagging behind” in setting up isolation pods at its hospitals.

These pods were said to be up and running by the following week.

Council officials refused to disclose names, citing data protection, despite being asked to do so under Freedom of Information laws.

In one incident, a Southwark GP surgery had to be closed because “a student nurse did not follow guidance and it had to be closed and deep cleaned.”

A crunch point appears to have come by March 12, when Southwark had recorded nine cases of the virus.

The meeting noted that King’s, Guy’s and St Thomas’ had all moved to a formal “critical” footing in their response to the pandemic.

While individuals are now being encouraged to test, officials noted at the meeting how “contact tracing is being lessened, [and] workplace transmission is not being followed up.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Three East Dulwich entrepreneurs have raised £23,000 in crowdfunding in just 24 hours to launch their ecofriendly business idea: an ‘indoor farm’ made from used plastic bottles.

Bottle Farm is the brainchild of three friends from Southwark who wanted to grow their own food to cut down on plastic waste and air miles but, living in London, found garden and allotment space hard to come by.

The trio, who all grew up within ten minutes’ walk of each other and

studied a mix of physics and design at university, and came up with the simple and effective idea after they graduated.

The ‘farm’ is designed with hydroponic technology, a self-watering system which means the plants grow in water rather than soil.

The plants just need natural sunlight and nutrition powder to grow – without the need for electricity like similar systems on the market.

Set up by Charlie Francis, Daniel Taylor and Emil Schneider, a CrowdFunder to start the business in earnest raised over £32,000 – the lion’s share of which was pledged within just 24 hours.

Charlie said: "There are lots of good reasons to grow your own fresh food.

The problem is that most people don’t have the time or space to do it.

“So we have designed Bottle Farm to either hang on a window or sit on a flat surface. Now anyone can grow fresh produce at home with minimal effort and at the same time extend the life of a plastic bottle."

Hawkes Cidery, on Druid Street, said it is planning the stunt to highlight apple wastage in the UK. The pints are equivalent to around 40,000 apples, which is estimated to be around 1.6 per cent of the UK’s daily apple wastage.

The brewery plans to launch an ‘apple donor’ scheme on the same day, in which members of the public are encouraged to donate any apples they have growing to the brewery.

manage,” said the brewery’s founder, Simon Wright.

“This year we’re making a bold statement, to show the people of the UK how bad apple wastage is in our country.

The donated apples will be used to make a cider, from which all of the profits going to Social Orchards Urban Planting.

The charity aims to establish community-run orchards within deprived areas.

From last year’s donated apples, the cidery has already made a new drink, called ‘THIS IS LONDON’ which will be launched on Thursday. It says it hopes to expand the range with donated apples from all over the country.

Police say man shot at a rave held behind Millwall’s ground

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A man was shot near the meadows behind Millwall’s ground in the early hours of Friday morning.

Residents living near Bridgehouse Meadows, off John Williams Close, were told they could not cross the park while police and paramedics dealt with the scene.

Police believe a large number of people had been attending an event in the meadows into the early hours when a man was found shot in nearby Rollins Street.

The ambulance service told the News they had responded to reports of a shooting at around 4am that morning.

The victim has been rushed to a major trauma centre, where he remained in a serious condition when the News went

He had suffered two gunshot wounds to the chest and body. Shortly afterwards, a second man attended hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand, and his condition is not life-threatening.

“We believe a significant number of people were attending an unlicensed music event in nearby Bridgehouse Meadows at the time of the shooting,” said the Met’s DC Simon Carson.

“We’re appealing for anyone who has footage or images of the incident to get in touch as soon as possible.”

Cllr Peter John said London’s police force was facing a new era of austerity, amid the economic shock caused by coronavirus.

He was joined in the call for extra funding by Mayor Sadiq Khan. Both claim local government and the Met are facing lost income over uncertainty that their extra coronavirus costs will be refunded.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man who threatened to kill police officers and spit at them after claiming he had COVID-19 has been handed a year in jail.

Forty-five-year-old Jason Gritton, from Crystal Palace’s Central Hill, was found guilty of assaulting an emergency worker and for affray on Tuesday, August 4, after a trial at Croydon Crown Court.

He threatened the police officers after they looked for him at his home address on Thursday, April 30 in connection with a series of driving offences.

Not only did he try to hide from police, he also waved a large knife and threatened to kill them as he threw objects including a storage box at the officers. He then threatened to spit at them while claiming he had Coronavirus.

Specialist negotiators had to be called to the scene, who later arrested him and took him into custody.

Chief Inspector David Monk, from the Met's road and transport policing command, said: "This sentence shows that threats and assaults on emergency workers will not be tolerated and the maximum possible sentence will be sought through the court process."

Man charged with possessing images of child sexual abuse and bestiality

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey man has appeared in court accused of possessing images of child sexual abuse and bestiality.

Dilwar Alam, 49, of the White Grounds Estate, appeared at Croydon Magistrates Court on Monday, August 10, charged with possessing extreme pornography depicting sexual relations with a snake, horse, dog and chicken.

The defendant is also charged with three counts of making indecent photographs of a child. He was granted bail and is due to appear for a hearing at Inner London Crown Court at a later date.

“This court’s powers are not sufficient to deal with this, so I am committing you to Inner London Crown Court. You will be required to attend at a future date,” the defendant was told.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk John Boyega will star in Steve McQueen’s new BBC and Amazon Prime series Small Axe playing a real-life black police officer who joined the force to tackle systemic racism.

The series portrays a series of stories from London’s Caribbean community between the 1960s and 80s.

Star Wars actor Boyega from Peckham has been cast as Leroy Logan, who spent three decades in the Met and was awarded an MBE for his work in tackling racism.

Logan was inspired to change the force from within after two police officers assaulted his own father in front of him.

The former superintendent retired in 2013 and also held the role of the chair of the Black Police Association Charitable Trust after founding the National Association of Black Police Officers, which helped run Camberwell anti-knife and gun crime charity One Big Community.

In recent years he has also highlighted the impact of austerity on community policing.

The episode, Red, White And Blue, is one of five in the series slated to open

John Boyega the New York Film Festival in September this year and airing this autmn.

Another episode, Mangrove, comes just after the 50th anniversary of the Mangrove nine and their high profile trial. The trailer for the episode was published on the anniversary, this month.

“It was a march necessitated by relentless police brutality in Notting Hill.

Southwark Bike Buddies pairs experienced cyclists with new riders to help them navigate their new commute or enjoy more exercise.

Since lockdown, there has been a 200 per cent increase in cycling for leisure and the government and local authorities are actively encouraging people to make use of new cycling lanes and adapted road layouts to keep public transport running at social distancing capacity.

Southwark Cyclists want to help

people keen to get on their wheels do so safely and while following the rules of the road.

They will help plan routes on quiet streets, building up to riding in traffic over several sessions. Riders who sign up should have some cycling experience and know the Highway Code. A similar initiative in Wandsworth has already helped over 30 cyclists a month.

Dr Bruce Lynn, Southwark Cyclists healthy rides coordinator, commented: "I am delighted to be involved to pair up new cyclists and experienced riders to explore and enjoy London in a different way. They will see how quick and pleasant it is to ride around the city”.

Shoppers stunned by anti-mask protest StandUp X are not just against masks - they believe COVID-19 measures are ‘illegal and disproportionate, a state of authoritarian control’

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Anti-mask protestors staged a demonstration in Peckham Rye’s Morrisons where they urged shoppers to refuse lockdowns and question mask wearing rules.

Speaking through a megaphone, the members from StandUp X, a 5G conspiracy theorist group, told startled customers to ‘resist the new world order agenda’ in the protest a fortnight ago.

StandUpX describes itself as a community ‘protesting and standing up for our rights across England’.

They believe COVID-19 measures are ‘illegal and disproportionate’, ‘a state of authoritarian control’, and are against vaccinations,

‘surveillance tracking’ through track and trace. They also claim 5G is necessary for ‘implantable microchips’.

Parliament’s digital, culture, media and sport committee has called on the government to publish draft legislation on social media regulation after the rise of pandemic misinformation and conspiracy theories.

MPs are worried that dangerous misinformation has spread online through social media such as Facebook and Whatsapp as there is currently no UK law to regulate their content.

Although Facebook, Google and Twitter and have all taken varying degrees of action to tackle the issues, self-regulation is not enough to tackle the scale of the problem.

Southwark Council wrote to the owners of empty homes across the borough asking them to help them rehouse people as part of the national effort to eradicate homelessness during lockdown.

As well as benefiting from houses that would otherwise be sat empty, the council has also used over 500 homes in blocks due for redevelopment as temporary housing including the Alyesbury, Sceaux Gardens and the Ledbury.

But with government support and rent and mortgage holidays coming to an end, and evictions coming back into force at the end of August, support from responsible private landlords is more important than ever.

The ban on evictions will end on August 23 – heightening fears that homelessness will once again rise especially as the furlough scheme winds down.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Four Bermondsey schoolchildren have been told their trampoline will be taken away by a housing association, because it’s in a communal garden.

Mum-of-four Claire Blackwell, who lives on Abbey Street, says she was shocked to receive a letter from Clarion Housing ordering the trampoline to be removed within a week, as she says it’s the only way they can play outside while she keeps an eye on them.

The 37-year-old is the primary carer for her husband, who is bedbound, meaning she is unable to take her children out for day trips or to the park without abandoning her spouse.

Her children, aged nine, ten, eleven and twelve, now face not being able to enjoy the trampoline during the heatwave.

“My youngest is autistic, my husband’s bed-bound,” said Claire.

“I can’t take them out to the park, but my children go in the communal garden with the trampoline but now I’ve been told to take it down.

“We’ve got no family or friends to take them out, and I can’t take them

out because I’ve got to look after my husband.

“I thought it was a good idea, my kids have been crying to go out, they’re getting so frustrated.

“I get it’s a communal garden, but I’m in a really bad situation here.”

A letter sent to the mum seen by the News states the housing association intends to “sell or dispose” of the kids’ trampoline by next week if it’s not removed.

The family’s flat balcony overlooks the Abbey Street garden, meaning Claire can keep an eye on the trampolining kids while also in-doors for her husband.

“I’ve been complaining to the association about people coming in-and-out of the garden, they don’t want to talk about the fence being broken,” said Claire. “Nobody came out for all that.

“But I’m not planning on taking it down, this is the only way my kids can get any enjoyment, otherwise they’d be sitting indoors watching TV all day.”

The money will pay for engineer to come up a plan

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Tree campaigners have raised over £2,000 to pay for an independent engineer, to develop an alternate plan for Cox’s Walk Footbridge that saves its straddling oaks from being felled.

As this paper as reported previously, the Save the Footbridge Oaks Campaign has galvanised the support of environmentalists and many who

regularly visit Sydenham Hill Wood and Dulwich Wood to protect the two ancient oaks in the conserved woodland.

They are lobbying against Southwark Council’s decision to cut down the two mature oaks on either side of the bridge which Tooley Street’s experts say needs structural work to keep safe.

The bridge was originally built in 1865 to cross the High Level Railway to Crystal Palace. More than 2,800

people signed a signature to save the trees which sit in an area of ancient woodland – one of the last remnants of the Great North Wood in London.

The Crowdfunder is paying for the engineer’s time, and it is hoped an alternative plan can be presented to the council when it is ready.

The earliest the oaks could be felled is in September 2020 after Southwark Council paused giving them the chop in favour of launching a public consultation.

Cemetery closed in error

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Fencing blocking off part of Camberwell New Cemetery after it reopened to the public was left locked up up in error, Southwark Council confirmed this week.

Yvonne Nelson contacted the News last Thursday (August 6) after she went to pay her respects to a loved one on July 28.

Despite the council website saying Brenchley Gardens had reopened, when she arrived she was faced with a padlocked fence and unable to enter – and also surprised by changes to parking at Honor Oak Recreation Ground which is now paid-for.

“Not being able to access their grave site was very distressing for me, a cemetery is a place where people mourn, a place to feel close to those who are no longer here,” she explained.

Although several people have contacted the News over the last few months shocked to find themselves paying for parking, there are still free spaces in the main cemetery car park – it is within Southwark’s parks that fees

have been put in place.

Cllr Rebecca Lury, cabinet member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities, confirmed that Camberwell New Cemetery is very much open.

She explained that the gate had been left locked accidentally after the reopening.

“We are sorry that Ms Nelson had trouble accessing the cemetery from the Recreation Ground car park, as we offer free parking within all our cemeteries,” she said.

“Road access is blocked from the Recreation Ground Parking facility to cut off a rat run through the cemetery.

“Although access on foot is possible within opening hours. However, it did come to our attention that our contractor had missed the recreation ground pedestrian gate when opening the cemetery at the beginning of last week, but we took immediate action to ensure this will not happen again.”

She said the council advises anyone visiting to check the council’s website first. During opening hours visitors can drive through the main entrance and park on the other side of the fenced-off car park for free.

Southwark teen murdered on oxford street

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A Southwark teen who was murdered in broad daylight on busy Oxford Street has been named as seventeen-year-old Jeremy Meneses-Chalarca.

The teen was attacked in front of horrified onlookers at around 5.30pm on Saturday evening, reportedly by a person wielding a machete.

Jeremy was rushed to hospital by the emergency services, but sadly was pronounced dead two hours later. Police have confirmed to the News that the teen was from Southwark.

Cops have vowed to step up patrols in the West End following the horrific murder, London’s 77th so far this year.

Three 18-year-old men from south

London have been arrested on suspicion of Jeremy’s murder. Two of those have also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

All three had been arrested after presenting to hospital with superficial knife injuries.

“This attack took place following a fight between a number of males in broad daylight and was witnessed by a large number of horrified onlookers,” said Met Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin.

"We have spoken to a number of people already but need anyone who has information, video or images to speak to us and tell us what they know. Your assistance could prove vital as we investigate this terrible incident."

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Senior Met officers are in talks with the council amid reports that the controversial new road layout in around Walworth is preventing them chasing suspects, as road are blocked by council installed flowerbeds.

Several residents have reported police cars losing mopeds mid-pursuit as they find themselves blocked off by planters full of geraniums.

Walworth Road’s new low emission neighbourhood has posed ‘additional complications’ for police, the Met admits.

As the News has detailed in previous editions, the new road layouts which include whole side streets being blocked off to traffic were put in place as part of a highly contentious plan to reduce air pollution and encourage more people to walk and cycle safely in an effort to prevent further transmission of the Coronavirus.

But the measures – greeted with enthusiasm by cyclists, walkers and commuters – are loved and loathed in equal measure and their rapid implementation has certainly been rocky.

Elephant and Castle church Metropolitan Tabernacle handed Southwark Council a petition of 2,500 signatures against the changes, and traders – including family business Lynne’s Electrical - have also shared their frustrations with the News.

The News is aware of several occasions where police cars, ambulances and other emergency service vehicles struggled to navigate the new layout.

In early July, immediately after the new layout was put in place, Brandon Estate resident Chloe Hill contacted us to describe what she saw near the police station. “Amelia Street was blocked off

yesterday using planters, which block the western access in and out of the police yard,” she said.

“There was no road signage in the surrounding area yesterday apart from one sign (Road Ahead Closed) which was on the corner of Amelia Street and Walworth Road.

“Impossible to see if you are driving northbound and difficulty to see if you are southbound. It actually beggars belief.”

She witnessed a police van trying to turn into the ‘blockade’, an ambulance from Guy’s and St Thomas’ having the same problem, and a council refuse truck, and claimed the drivers had no notice of the changes.

Youth knife crime was down by 39% in lockdown

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Knife crime offences among under-25s were down by 39 per cent during lockdown, according to council papers.

In the report made available in July, councillor Evelyn Akoto, Tooley Street’s public safety cabinet member, explained that in twelve months to May 2020 Southwark had seen a ten per cent reduction in reported knife offences, with the borough ranked fifth for the number of knife offences.

A large decrease was seen during three months of lockdown – with knife crime among under-25s down by 39 per cent and, across London as a whole, down by 41 per cent.

The report shared details of its serious youth violence panel’s work since its last meeting in 2019, saying tackling the issue needs ‘renewed focus’ in the ‘new world’ post COVID-19.

One recommendation to help drive the numbers down further has been to prevent exclusions and improve alternative education.

As the News has reported, exclusions have been rising across the borough

in the last few years with leading academy chains racking up particularly high figures.

Added mental health and preventative support in the works includes the new young people’s mental health service – fast tracked to open during lockdown – and the development of a community harm and exploitation hub.

This hub will focus on case work involving gangs, county lines, exploitation, and modern slavery.

Projects so far includes a pilot programme with a group of year eight parents whose children have been identified at risk.

The council is also focusing on helping to improve the relationship between young people and the police.

One strand of work involves setting up a Youth Independent Advisory Group, whose members are now being recruited, to focus on stop and search, community harm and exploitation, and ‘drug-related drivers of violence’.

Meanwhile, work to open up more community space to young people and youth groups including TRA halls has been put on hold due to social distancing.

Superintendent Kris Wright, from the roads and transport command, confirmed the Met had been consulted on the proposals and said a ‘professional dialogue’ between it and the council continues.

In a statement provided to the paper, Wright neither confirmed nor denied that police had complained to Southwark Council that the new layouts had compromised access to Walworth Police Station.

“We are aware of the ongoing road network modifications in the areas surrounding Walworth Police Station,” Superintendent Wright explained.

“There is a process of informing and consulting undertaken by the Local Authority project lead prior to commencement of the works and I can confirm that such consultation did occur, and a professional dialogue continues.

“Whilst any such works can lead to local frustrations and additional complications to policing response in the area, we are working closely with the local authority and roads and transport command to minimise the impact upon local policing activity.

“There is a feedback process in place to allow for real time operational concerns to be raised with the project team.

“The officers are skilled emergency responders and able to adapt to the

changing layout whilst these works are undertaken, and obviously any narrowing of access routes can lead to frustrations when stopping mopeds, but this is no different to any alleyway in the borough, however the safety of local communities and road users remains our utmost priority.

“I am not aware of any specific reports of vehicle pursuits being halted as a result of these new measures, but accept that it may have occurred, which is part of day to day policing.”

This paper has also seen a letter from Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle to Southwark Council’s transport cabinet member, taking Richard Livingstone to task over the implementation of the scheme.

In the missive, dated July 27, the Labour MP describing the problems at the station as “a wholly obvious problem to anyone living or working in the area” and says he is “amazed” the council officers who devised the scheme had failed to foresee these difficulties.

After being asked to respond to claims police did not have sufficient notice of the scheme and had been left struggling to navigate the layout, councillor Richard Livingstone responded: “It is silly to claim that the police have not been kept informed about these changes.

“We have been talking with the police both before and during us rolling out the Walworth Low Emissions Neighbourhood measures.

“Indeed, as a result of these conversations, we have changed some of our original planned physical road closures to CCTV monitored traffic filters in order to help them.

“We are in regular contact with the emergency services, including the police, and have committed to continue our work, resolving any problems that they bring to us, where it is possible.”

POLICE SEIZE LOADED GUN AND KNIFE on bermondsey estate

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police have seized a loaded gun and large knife after a dramatic late night chase in Bermondsey’s Lucey Way on Tuesday night.

Cops on patrol noticed two men, aged eighteen and twenty, turn away from them and walk into Lucey Way at around 9.10pm.

The pair began running away say police. Cops discovered a knife from outside a house on the estate, and a bag in a garden of another address.

Inside the bag was a gun, with at least

three rounds of ammunition.

After chasing the two men, cops arrested them on suspicion of possession of a firearm, ammunition and an offensive weapon.

They remained in custody as the News went to press.

Officers say the seizure prevented a “serious incident” taking place in Southwark.

Police Sergeant Leon Coltress said: "As the result of proactive work by officers from the Violent Crime Taskforce, a loaded gun and a large knife have been taken off the streets in London.

"Stop and search is an important

policing tool that helps seize deadly weapons and arrest perpetrators of violence.

“I have no doubt these arrests and seizures have prevented a serious incident taking place last night within Central South Borough Command Unit.”

A resident on the estate who didn't want to be named: "I was just walking past, there was police everywhere, they were just running everywhere.

"There were radios going off, saying that a firearm had been abandoned.

Forensics were here until late, I think some roads are still taped off."

189 new homes after £65M mental centre is agreed?

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The MaudslEy’s Mapother House, Michael Rutter Centre, and Professorial Building could be turned into 189 new homes after children’s mental health services relocate to a £65 million specialist centre.

A consultation into the future of the Denmark Hill site has now launched with South London and Maudsley NHS Trust outlining its vision for rebuilding the ‘out-dated’ and ‘soon to be surplus’ buildings.

The buildings, in De Crespigny Park, date back to the 1930s and have been altered considerably over the last 80 years to try to meet modern healthcare requirements.

Currently they are used mostly by the child and adult mental health services unit (CAMHS) which will relocate to a new purpose built facility – the Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People.

As the News reported in February of this year, the new £65m young

people’s facility aims to be a national centre of excellence and house leading clinicians under one room.

It will initially focus on mothers and babies; child trauma; selfharm; attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; obsessive compulsive disorder; autism; depression and mental health issues associated with the digital and online world.

The trust is proposing turning their current home into 189 homes – 50 per cent ‘affordable’ – with provision for local people and trust staff; creating a new pedestrian walkway, and replacing an existing nursery for trust staff with a purpose-build one with a new outdoor play area.

David Bradley, the trust’s CEO, said: “To ensure the safety and quality of our mental health services for people and communities we serve there is an urgent need to redevelop our mental health hospital facilities.

“This is an opportunity for the trust to use the proceeds from its surplus estate at the Maudsley Hospital and invest this back into our current and future hospitals and community

facilities.

“This is part of the process of modernising our inpatient facilities for patients, service users, their carers, friends and families and also our staff in Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Croydon.

“This has been agreed by the trust’s board as the most practical and economically sustainable way forward.”

Patients, staff and residents can view the plans in more detail and share their views online.

The redevelopment is similar to last month’s announcement that Lambeth Hospital’s ‘unfit’ acute wards would be replaced by a purpose-build new mental health unit at Douglas Bennett House in the Maudsley.

As this paper reported, the greenlight for the new building on Windsor Walk was given by South East London Clinical Commissioning Group on July 16 after a three-month public consultation.

Mental health grants announced

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The Maudsley Charity has announced which projects will receive grants from a quarter of a million pounds worth of funding for community mental health work across south London.

The funding scheme, called ‘community and connection’ aims to make a positive impact on people experiencing or recovering from severe mental illness and support those who also face challenges from severe financial hardship.

The charity’s chief executive Rebecca Gray said: “We are committed to supporting those people in most need and backing better mental health for all.

“COVID-19 has highlighted the high levels of inequality and mental illness that exist in south London.

“These grants will help those that face multiple disadvantage and we are proud to be supporting work that will make a genuine difference to people’s lives at such a difficult time.”

Projects to receive grants include workshops for parents and carers of young people with mental health difficulties in Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Croydon.

The trial project aims to help them navigate stress, burnout and relationship challenges of caring for people with added needs.

Arts Network, which uses creative activities to support patients, will also receive support for its work in Southwark and Lambeth and will help 200 people increase their selfconfidence, develop new skills and relationships.

The charity will also fund a project focusing on cannabis and mental health. It will support young adults in Southwark and Lambeth who use cannabis and are suffering their first episode of psychosis.

Regular peer sessions will involve hearing from others who have experienced psychosis through cannabis consumption, and help support users to reduce or stop altogether.

Evidence shows that in doing so, patients not only improve their mental health but also improve their social functioning and are more able to return to education or employment.

Funding is also being channelled into the Samaritans in the Community in Southwark, Lewisham and Greenwich.

After having to suspend its work during the height of the pandemic, this outreach work will once again continue, including working with homeless people and working with each borough’s suicide prevention groups.

Peckham-based not-for-profit Sporting Recovery Widening Participation, which focuses on sport for people recovering from serious mental illnesses and runs a wellness café, is also benefitting from funding.

Its work aims to raise self-esteem and reduce loneliness.

Other organisations and groups to receive funding include Lambeth IT skills programme Digi-Inclusion and Lewisham’s Sydenham Garden, Croydon’s Women’s Hub, and several projects at Bethlem Royal Hospital.

A new five-storey building will increase capacity for surgeries, with two new operating theatres and specialist diagnostic services.

Trust bosses say the building is needed to meet increasing demand for the children’s hospital services.

Inpatient numbers have doubled since 2005, and outpatients have more than doubled.

Ex-Blair official gets second term

The appointment is the second term served in the role by Dr Felicity Harvey on the Trust’s board and will last until 14 September 2024.

Dr Harvey had also been Director General for Public and International Health before her retirement in 2016, and has held additional roles with the World Health Organisation.

Before that she had been a director of Tony Blair’s Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit.

“It has been a great privilege to work with all my outstanding colleagues across the Trust for the past four years, and I am delighted to be continuing for another term,” she said.

The Trust’s top boss said the appointment would allow Dr Harvey to

make an “outstanding contribution to the Trust.”

“Felicity has a wealth of valuable experience, both from her time as a public health doctor and working at the highest levels of government,” said the Trust’s chairman Sir Hugh Taylor.

Investigation after stabbing on Hereford retreat

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Police have launched an investigation after a man was stabbed in a Peckham street on Thursday evening.

Cops were called to Hereford Retreat, off Bird in Bush Road, just after 6pm and found a man aged twenty with stab wounds.

Officers now believe his condition to be “not life threatening.”

Paramedics also attended, and rushed the stab victim to hospital.

Officers are still working to establish what happened at the scene.

As of the time the News went to press, no arrests had been made in connection with the stabbing.

“At this early stage, no arrests have been made,” said Southwark Police on Thursday night.

“Officers are on scene working to establish the circumstances.”

She has leant her support to a petition to improve health care for black women and conduct further research into the cause of the racial disparity, which has gained over 186,000 signatures.

Whereas seven in 100,000 white women die from pregnancy complications or in childbirth in the UK each year, the figure among black women is five times higher - at a rate of 38. Asian women are twice as likely to die as white women.

Last month parliament’s human rights committee held an inquiry into racism and inequality experienced by the black community.

Among those giving evidence was Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent, chief midwifery officer for England, who said there are currently no specific NHS England targets on reducing the mortality gap.

She said work is ongoing to improve antenatal care and highlighted that there is currently a very limited understanding of why the risks are much higher for black

There are also fears that women have been reluctant to engage with maternity services during the pandemic and that this could continue into the coming months.

62-year-old is arrested over stabbing in Nunhead

A man in his forties has been seriously injured after a broad daylight stabbing in Nunhead last Tuesday afternoon.

Police and paramedics were called to Gautrey Road at around 2.15pm to help the stab victim.

He was rushed to hospital where he remains in a “serious condition,” say police.

A 62-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

A crime scene also remained in place around the area of the stabbing for much of the following day, and police said their investigations are ongoing.

Officers have urged anyone with information who has not already spoken to them to get in touch.

Doorstep scammers alert in SE5 area

Scammers have been targeting Camberwell homes claiming to be raising money for an ex-offenders charity.

Southwark Police officer Beccy Hughes issued a warning saying Grove Lane residents were being doorstepped claiming to be part of a charity’s rehabilitation scheme selling goods or services.

PC Hughes warned there is ‘no such scheme’ and said sellers had to have a pedlar’s licence issued by the police in order to operate.

“Please do not answer the door before checking from a window, to see who is at the door,” she advised.

“If you decide to speak to the person outside, then speak to them from the window rather than opening the door.

“Always ask to see identification no matter who is at the door. If they are from a company then call the company to verify the employee of that company.

"DO NOT open the door. Scams occur all the time.

“Some sellers may become upset or aggressive so be cautious and please call the police. If the phone is at hand then turn the camera on to record for evidence to give to the police.”

YOUNG LAUREATE WRITES ABOUT LIFE AFTER THE LOCKDOWN

Peckham poet Caleb Femi, who was named the first young people’s laureate in 2016, has written a new poem about life after lockdown for young people.

Working with the youth programme National Citizen Service he drafted the piece Life After Lockdown after crowdsourcing input from more than 100,000 young people on their hopes and dreams after the pandemic.

Research conducted by NCS has found that 75 per cent of young people feel their voices are not heard in society. Teens aged sixteen to seventeen years old are especially concerned about education (67%) loneliness (42%) and their mental health (33%).

The poem has also been brought to life through a short film, directed by Femi, following the journey of three teenagers during the pandemic.

Femi said: “The work follows a stream of consciousness mirroring the optimism of our youth - hopes and dreams unscathed by outside influences.

“Submissions from young people were

interwoven to highlight their truths, their resilience and an imagination that can envision and create a new tomorrow. They acknowledge the past but are resolute in changing a shared future.”

He added: “It was an honour to be a mouthpiece for a young generation on behalf of NCS, who have so much to contribute to our society.”

NCS Grad Ellie, who helped inspire the piece, added: “Whilst it’s been hard being stuck in the same house for weeks on end, it’s taught me to be grateful for those around me during these unprecedented times.

“I hope that we can continue supporting each other, as well as those that are currently doing an amazing job at keeping this country together.

“We need to keep sharing the new sense of community that my generation have found online through NCS’ Staying Connected hub, and especially via FaceTime and Snapchat.

“I also hope we continue sharing the positive voices of young people with the rest of society, especially since it’s our future that will be mostly impacted as a result of COVID-19.”

disAbilIty sports fest is on

London’s only Vitality Netball Superleague Team - London Pulse – has teamed up with care provider Anchor Hanover to provide online netball coaching for residents in Anchor Hanover homes in Southwark.

They have been enjoying Zoom lessons with the first streamed on Wednesday, July 22, given by player Kira Rothwell. She taught the OAPs how to pass and shoot the ball into the net.

Kira described it as the ‘highlight of my lockdown’: “The residents were fun to talk to and engaged, especially when it got to the competitions.

“It just shows that there's a place for netball in all ages and an experience I'd love to do again.”

Margaret Walker, aged 87, a resident at Rose Court home in Lower Road, said: “It was a lovely session and I really enjoyed it. It was nice to see residents from other care homes and we were doing it together, it was fun.”

Inclusive charity Disability Sports Coach will run its first ever ‘Virtual Summer Festival’ to support the disabled community after the Tokyo Paralympics was postponed.

Last Tuesday marked the first time that a group of Southwark Police Cadets met up since the beginning of lockdown.

On their first task they conducted weapons sweeps with officers from

Dulwich Wood and Dulwich Hill safer neighbourhood teams.

Fortunately no weapons were found - but they did recover small amounts of Class B and Class C drugs.

Taking place from August 25-28, the festival will celebrate the charity’s work and its members across London including those who used to meet up in person to train and learn new skills in its Elephant and Castle group.

Disability Sports Coach are the leading disability sport charity in the city, with the mission of enabling every disabled person to enjoy the transformative benefits of sport.

Surveys show that even before lockdown, only seventeen per cent of disabled people played sport once a week – half as many as non-disabled people.

Every summer, they host a festival to bring together members of their fourteen community clubs for a day of fun sports-related activities and events.

The clubs span thirteen London boroughs, and support disabled people to get active, build confidence, gain new skills and socialise.

A disability sports coach session before lockdown Activities in the virtual festival will include a range of fun interactive sports sessions led by the likes of England Netball, The Amazing Race, Adapted Yoga and more, along with creative sessions, a quiz led by former Paralympic swimmer and Disability Sports Coach patron, Kate Grey.

Kate said: “During these challenging times it’s never been more important to get active and the festival is offering a variety of experiences allowing participants to try new sports, connect with the disability community and feel a part of the Paralympic movement – even if we have to wait a little longer for the action in Tokyo!”

‘we’ll be here as leone as you need us’ A group of volunteers who came together to support the Sierra Leonean diaspora during lockdown is now winding down its specialist support to vulnerable and shielding members of the community.

Over the last seventeen weeks the Sierra Leone UK&I Rapid Response Team conducted outreach and provided support including meals, phone calls and advice.

Their work came to an official end on Saturday, August 1, as volunteers returned to work and shielding formally ends. However, the group remains on standby in case of a second wave.

Volunteer Abdul Seisay told the News: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Sierra Leonean Community in UK&I and most especially those living in Southwark,

Lambeth and Lewisham.

“A big thank you to all our donors, sponsors and supporters. Special thanks to all beneficiaries and those who made referrals for their compassionate approach and receiving us in the homes.

More needs to be done during this crisis

ace coverings are a simple, but vital tool in the current stage of our fight against COVID-19. They are now mandatory in several public indoor settings, such as museums, galleries, cinemas and public libraries. For those of us that can, let us protect ourselves and each other by wearing a mask, alongside continuing to observe social distancing measures.

After months of lobbying, I am relieved that the government finally announced the culture recovery fund grants programme.

This fund offers financial support for cultural organisations that were financially stable before Covid-19, but are now at imminent risk of collapse.

In our community, this investment will be crucial for many of the borough’s worldclass institutions such as the Southbank Centre, the Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe and Southwark Playhouse.

However, it is still the case that many freelancers that work

However, the government’s inertia on this has been concerning and they need to act now to put the right protections in place.

To add to this, the most disadvantaged families are facing further financial pressures going into the new school term. Whilst it was positive to have seen the

government perform a U-turn and extend the free school meal voucher programme to cover the summer holidays, there is still confusion over whether children, who have only recently become eligible for the scheme, will need to wait until the next school year starts to access it.

In addition, whilst the government have rowed back slightly on their punitive and illthought through decision to cut free travel for under-eighteens, their latest update suggests that exemptions will not be made for children on free school meals.

At all levels of government, it is crucial that we provide more opportunities for our children and young people to thrive and fulfil their potential. I am pleased that the mayor’s fund for London has teamed up with Lambeth and Southwark councils to bring a fantastic extended programme of holiday food services and activities this year. This will include food education, arts and crafts, theatre and a wide range of physical activities.

In that case raise the money by charging them to use the roads, make them take a test, have insurance and pay a road user’s licence …

What the Dickens?

South London tube map utopia

Last week we noted how TfL’s tube map was a case in point for better transport in Rotherhithe, as it revealed a whopping 144 minute walk between Canada Water and Canary Wharf.

This week a ‘south London biased’ tube map has gone viral on social media, with thousands of likes and shares. “This is the future south Londoners want,” went the caption.

But unlucky SE16 residents are being left out of even this utopian ideal.

Bermondsey and Rotherhithe stations get let out of the picture, and the proposed Bakerloo extension through the Old Kent Road is also missed despite it being backed by thousands of residents.

Winners, however, include Walworth, and a new tube route at Camberwell Green.

Basic tweaks needed - we all want lower emissions

W

alworth’s low emission neighbourhood is increasingly looking like a rush job that needs a lot of time and money spent on fixing issues that should have been obvious from the start.

The teething problems and widespread concerns from many different groups – whether they be residents, business owners, the police, local MP Neil Coyle, and faith groups – also risk undermining support for tackling air pollution.

If the scheme is not perceived as successful by the majority who live and work in the area, and not just those passing through on their way to work, then it will be doubly harder to implement more changes and really build consensus for new ways to travel.

Air pollution, which the scheme tries to address, is a silent killer and one of the biggest health challenges this country faces. Although action needs to be proportionate, it is an emergency.

Some people may be under the misapprehension that dirty air is an inevitable

fact of life and only poses a minor risk, or a risk worth taking.

Research, however, is only beginning to show us the impact toxic pollution has on our health. The reasons behind most miscarriages often remain unknown, but scientists have now identified that when air pollution is high hospitals see a spike in lost pregnancies.

Asthma, COPD, cancer… the list of illnesses and disease linked to air pollution goes on. These are conditions no one would wish on another person and yet every time we take a short car journey that could have been walked or cycled we are contributing to the problem.

Social distancing, being discouraged from using public transport to avoid crowds, and the necessity of driving in certain circumstances mean that we still need cars on the road.

The worst thing that could happen as a result of the low emission neighbourhood would be for attitudes to harden and for motorists to feel attacked on all sides.

The scheme should be about making everyone’s life easier, safer and giving more options. Some basic tweaks could achieve that.

Antiqu’e Gets Creative Until She Can Dance Her Butt Off

Bermondsey’s Antiqu’e identifies as ‘a creative entrepreneur, singer, songwriter and empowerment influencer’ and says that she uses her talents to ‘create music, put on empowering events and work within the community via The One Wing Project,’ writes Michael Holland...

Antiqu’e has been singing since an early age but did not take it seriously

until her father passed away in 2005 and music became her therapy. Later her son’s father died and music helped the healing: ‘It’s the answer to my highs and lows.’

It is also the answer to helping others in The One Wing Project, which Antiqu’e describes as ‘working to provide safe spaces for young people and female groups who are facing challenges and have been though traumatic experiences,

to connect to their voice and express their emotions in order to move forward in their lives.’

It is quickly evident that music is everything to Antiqu’e. She says she has a music addiction that goes beyond love: ‘Music is a way to communicate feelings which words cannot express it’s a universal language… it transcends age, culture and status, it’s a whole vibe,’ she exclaims. ‘It’s a way for me to turn pain into beauty, emotion into art and expression into inspiration - and to create change in the world.’

And this positive outlook on the power of music has helped the singer cope with these strange times we live in now: ‘We have seen people coming together, people giving food to other people, being there for one another and the love in the world…COVID-19 has forced everything to a standstill and forced me to just stop for a moment, reflect, process and evaluate what’s really, really important. I have had so much time with my son, time to get close to him and bond as mother and son. Staying in everyday wasn’t such a big shift, I like staying in my house, being able to create and get into my own zone. I am self-employed, I’m used to being with myself and motivating and inspiring myself to get on with what I

I was going to say how impressed I was but, without missing a beat, Leo was off again. ‘I am also the Senior Music Scholar at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford studying for a doctorate in opera-ballet composition under the supervision of Prof. Robert Saxton.’

I do know Leo has achieved much more that he is rather modestly holding back, so now I’m seriously impressed and questioning my own New Cross education.

I asked what he especially loves about his work: ‘As a composer, I write music for people to perform. As a conductor, I facilitate others to perform, because without other musicians I would be desperately scribbling and flapping all on my own. Collaborating with inspiring colleagues is by far the greatest honour and delight.’

Career highlights?

‘It’s always immensely exciting playing my part on large scale productions at the Royal Opera House such as Nutcracker, Manon and La Fille Mal Gardee. I also loved working on Amadeus for the National Theatre.

To highlight just one moment would be Constella’s collaboration with the garden designer Stuart Towner. Together, we created a show garden for the Chelsea Flower Show and I wrote a music-dance which was performed within the garden to 400,000 live audience members and broadcast media. It was epic.’

How has Covid-19 impacted on your profession? ‘Covid-19 has decimated the performing arts. Concert halls and theatres have been shut since March, and even though the government has recognised the seriousness of the situation

in the arts, the long and short of it is that we’re still in big trouble whilst social distancing measures remain in place. It is a very tough time at the moment because there are no performances and no rehearsals. I am very much missing music-making with all my colleagues.’

What do you plan to do to get through this current crisis? ‘Constella and I have developed a new project called Connecting Stars, which brings life-changing, one-to-one virtual performances for care home residents, providing support for our loved ones and paid opportunities for performers in these trying times. The project has made an enormous impact to performers and care home residents across the UK. But Antiqu’e is not trying to do everything alone, she made contact with the Musicians Union and Help Musicians UK, who came through with financial support. She is also one of UnLtd’s 2020 Resilient Communities award winners, who have been really supportive in helping her think about how she is going to move forward with The One Wing Project beyond COVID-19.

And Antiqu’e does not shy away from the harsh realities: ‘Hearing about so much death every day has really emotionally impacted on me, I had to fully lock off my WhatsApp, I stopped going on social media and I shut down watching movies and youtube all day to take my mind off the dark things. The isolation from others has been hard, even just to bump into the man at the local shop I often see, and always say hello to. And at first there were a few clashes in my house between me and my teen son, just sharing the space with each other 24/7 was challenging, he can be a bit messy, and there’s not much for him to do once he’s done everything’.

And there are financial problems for Antiqu’e that self-employment brings when the work dries up, and when a lot of her work is in schools and community

centres that have closed. She says, ‘I’m dying to get back to connecting with people and the energy that you get from performing for others and sharing with them - That real human connection.’

But the creative juices will always flow so she has been able to concentrate on her forthcoming EP launch and the visuals that will go with it: ‘COVID-19 is forcing me to be innovative, work more effectively online, and I’m thinking I’ll shoot the videos myself as I have everything I need in me.’

On a practical level Antiqu’e has plans: ‘Bond with my son more and build a better relationship; continue to meditate, declutter my house, clean, make and write more music, connect with people online, edit some vlogs, record some covers, learn new things, get involved in opportunities online and other business stuff I need to complete.’

And after Lockdown? ‘I think there will be a new normal, I think it will take time for me to build back my life again. I am supposed to have a business launch and an EP launch later this year, so no matter what happens with those events, I am defo going to have a big party and dance my butt off just to celebrate life and give out free hugs to everyone at the party.

The Only Squeaky Voice in New Cross Conducts The Royal Ballet

Leo Geyer grew up in SE London and after his New Cross education soared to great heights in the world of music, writes Michael Holland...

‘My musical journey began with a dip out of the hat!’ cries Leo, sounding as excited now as he would have been when his name was pulled out of a hat for an over-subscribed offer of free instrumental lessons by The Lewisham Schools Music Service. ‘I became fascinated by music almost immediately and I think I knew from quite a young age that music was the career for me,’ he adds.

That early introduction to music led to further inspiration and motivation for the young Geyer. He continues the tale of his career path: ‘My life-affirming moment came when I was eleven when, through my school in New Cross, I sang in a treble chorus for the Royal Opera House’s production of Martinu’s A Greek Passion.

It was such an incredible experience to add my squeaky voice to this colossal sound in such an inspiring setting.’

We both stopped for breath.

From that moment on Leo was hooked and focussed on becoming a professional musician. ‘Ten years later,’ he begins again, ‘the Royal Opera House offered me my first job as a Cover Conductor for The Royal Ballet.’

Jump forward several years and Leo Geyer is a composer and conductor, working predominantly in classical music and music for the stage. ‘I’m the Founder and Artistic Director of Constella OperaBallet and Music Director for the Devon Philharmonic Orchestra,’ he chimes, ‘and work as a guest artist internationally.’

nearly 50 years ago 300 firefighters fought the Wilson’s Wharf blaze

Last week marked the 49th anniversary of the infamous Wilson’s Wharf fire of August 9, 1971. The great blaze at the present day Southwark Crown Court on Battle Bridge Lane, took more than 300 firefighters to tackle, with crews on scene for three days, writes Alex Yeates…

The fire was started when construction workers were removing insulation from piping in the unoccupied refrigerated warehouse and sparks from their gas-powered cutting tools caused tape attached to the lagging to ignite.

Flames engulfed the large sixfloor building, which used to be a cold store.

With bricked up windows, the building became an “impenetrable windowless fortress” and proved difficult for firefighters to gain a foothold.

One attempt to gain control of the fire was to break through one of the blocked windows with the help of two construction workers and a pneumatic drill.

The plan was abandoned, however, after cracks in the wall began to appear and concerns were raised that the wall would collapse.

Liam Hackett, a firefighter based at Paddington fire station at the time and

who was part of a relief crew, said: “There was great difficulty trying to get in to the building.

“The job was very smoky and acrid as you would expect and those of us that I could see were not wearing breathing apparatus.

"That was normal back then because we only carried three sets on the pumps, the pump escapes had none."

Liam was tasked with manning a radial branch, a piece of equipment designed to hold very large jets, and pour water through one of the hoist latches that overlooked the Thames.

Three firefighters were injured before the fire was finally brought under control around 8:30pm.

Combating the fire took twenty jets, eight radial branches, one foam unit and 200 one-hour Proto breathing apparatus sets, using 315 cylinders.

Almost 100 fire stations had been involved, either directly or indirectly, in the blaze and nearly all senior officers attended the fire at some stage.

At its height, the plume of smoke pouring from the building could be seen across the capital, with reports of the smell of smoke received from as far afield as Bethnal Green and some underground stations in the City.

Clean, Keen and Green on the South Bank

The whole country has been locked down for too long now and it is starting to show as mandatory masking rules are being broken in shops and on trains, and seaside towns are being overrun every time the sun comes out, but on the South Bank the few tentative reopenings are being taken seriously and carried out properly, writes Michael Holland...

The Green Room has a large openair garden where they have reduced the covers from 300 to 100 to keep customers safe. Sanitiser points are dotted around and tables are cleaned whenever they become vacant, plus, the staff are constantly washing their hands. Myself and Nina were as safe as we ever could be in the circumstances.

There is quite rightly a registering process so they can track and trace customers if the need ever arises, which slows service down a tad if your phone signal is lacking, but eventually we were brought chilled water, our order was taken and drinks arrived.

To begin we had the Chickpea Hummus, with Crispy Chick Peas and a killer chilli kick that made my citrussy IPA all the more refreshing - as well as necessary to calm the heat the hummus had created. Elsewhere on the table, all gooey and warm and strangely comforting, were the Sauerkraut and Cheddar Croquettes, which oozed and schmoozed their cheesey way into my heart.

Nina sipped serenely on her cocktail and blocked out all my Hmmms and

Aaaahs and other eating noises.

The manager came over to say hello and update us on what had been happening on lockdown. The menu had been stripped back, the company had furloughed many staff who were now striving hard to work under new Covid restrictions, and even with reduced numbers in their ranks they kept the smiles on their faces as more customers than expected arrived. Especially our server Emilia who seemed exceptionally busy.

Pizza is the big thing at The Green Room where the kitchen is run by Head Chef, Ben Hughes-Gage. The team’s house bread oven was fired up to cook Richard Falk’s new sourdough pizza recipe, and working only with stone milled heritage, British grains and British produce harvested during their peak seasonal window, the homebaked pizzas looked very impressive.

So impressive, in fact, that Nina did not look at anything else on the menu but quickly chose the signature pizza, Fior Di Latte mozzarella, La Masseria olive oil, passata, housemade chorizo and n’duja, which is quite a mouthful in more ways than one, so she pointed at the menu and said, ‘That one’.

I was tempted by the haddock and triple-cooked chips but after two of the hottest days on record I needed something lighter, and I’m pleased to say that the Black Rice and Grilled Courgette Salad with Grilled Chicken ticked that box superbly. With cashews and radish in there too there was an array of textures and tastes to

experience, and was perfect for a summer evening.

We paired our mains with a fruity Macabeo from Spain.

The Green Room isn’t hot on views but is great for people-watching with its garden, and a glass-walled inside that is spacious and bright and allows the interested viewer to see the spectacle of life pass by.

Former Lion Webster approves of Rowett's transfers and urges Tottenham striker to buy into Millwall spirit Exclusive

By Jake Sanders sports@southwarknews.co.uk Byron Webster has hailed Gary Rowett's transfer business this summer as "fantastic" - and has tipped his former side to remain comfortably clear of the relegation-zone next season.

Lions boss Rowett has already secured impressive season-long loan deals for Ryan Woods from Stoke City, and highly-rated 18-year-old Tottenham and Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott and remains in the market for more attacking prowess.

Millwall finished 8th last term, narrowly missing out on a place in the play-offs after winning just four of their nine Championship matches post-lockdown. And Webster, who played more than 100 times for the Lions between 2014 and 2019, believes there's no reason why Rowett's men can't be up there once again.

"It's a mental league," Webster said.

"No one knows what's going to happen over the next few weeks before the season starts - especially with the pandemic we've been in, and the break that the lads have had.

"You have still got some big teams coming down like Norwich, who have their style of play, Bournemouth, another Premier League team that have been there, and Watford, which obviously depends on how many players they lose.

"I'd go the other way and think that Millwall don't need to be looking over their shoulder at relegation - more because of the teams that are coming

up. I don't think Millwall will be in a scrap at all, there's no pressure on Millwall, no one expects them to be up there, just themselves."

Despite praising deals for both Woods and Parrott, Webster has warned the teenager to buy into the club's beliefs or face getting banished from what he describes as a "demanding" group of players.

"The signings they've made are fantastic," the 33-year-old admitted.

"But it's a different type of environment at Millwall. You've seen players sign where you think 'they're going to do fantastic' and they don't, because of the pressure that the fans give you.

"Woods has obviously been there, he's had a successful six months, and the new striker coming in has got the pedigree of a good signing, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he's going to be a good signing for Millwall.

"He needs to come in and buy into the club, expect the demands from the players and the fans. That group of lads are a good group if you come in and work hard, but if you don't show the commitment, they'll cast you to one side.

"When I was there, don't get me wrong, a lot of the times the gaffer he would give us a kick up the butt, but we managed ourselves. Me, Moro, Willo, Greg's, I'm not saying the manager didn't do anything, because my god he did, but he would leave it up to us at times to give the telling's off.

"From what I'm hearing, it's stayed like that and that's why the core of the team - Hutch has been there a while, Coops, Willo, Thommo, Jed, it's good to keep players like that because they know what the club is about, they know

what's expected.

"Speaking to the lads, they've loved their time under the new manager. The gaffer Neil Harris put together a good group, and any manager that was going to come in was not going to find the job easy, but find it a lot easier because of the group that had been put together.

"Obviously Gary Rowett has come in and they've maybe ended up being disappointed they've not got into the play-offs. Neil had got us near the play-offs the year before, but it's not very often that a new manager comes in when the group is a good group.

Usually they’ll come in when the team is fighting against relegation, but that wasn't the case with Gary Rowett.

"His career speaks for itself - it's only Stoke where he had a blip, but looking at Stoke, that's no reflection on him. He

did very well at Burton, Birmingham and kicked Millwall on, so I'd say the team are in a good position. As I said, speaking to a few of the lads, they're enjoying it, the style of play has changed slightly, but they're able to mix it now with the likes of Willo in midfield, Woods, who’s come in, and big Smudge if they need to go more direct, so it's a good blend at the minute."

It's been more than 18 months since Webster ended his stay in SE16, after falling down the pecking order following a combination of a serious knee injury the previous season, and the excellent form of both Jake Cooper and Shaun Hutchinson.

He made just six appearances during his final campaign at The Den, and although his lack of outings saw him miss out on the opportunity of getting

a send-off from the Lions faithful, the club remains close to the defender's heart.

"I keep a close eye on Millwall, plus I get free tickets if I speak to the lads," Webster joked. "A big factor is that my kids were growing up when I was playing for Millwall, so they ask about Millwall, they get the new shirts, so you could say they're Millwall fans, which goes down great around the Leeds area.

"I made a lot of friends, I check out the results, I try to get to the odd game here and there. Not just the lads, the girls in the office and people like that. It was a great time for me and a great club. I have still got a good bond with Millwall fans, I get a lot of messages, I do a few interviews here, there and everything.”

Since leaving Millwall in January 2019, Webster has enjoyed brief spells at both Scunthorpe United and Carlisle United, but is currently a free agent after rejecting a new contract at Brunton Park.

Webster might be without a club with just over four weeks until the new season gets underway, but the centreback isn't considering hanging his boots up any time soon.

He said: "I'm going to continue playing, it's just leaving it down to my agents to speak to a few clubs, see what's available, see what's best for my family and go from there.

"It's been a crazy with the time off we've had, but I've managed to stay fit, and have enjoyed my time at home, but I'm ready to get back into the swing of things. Carlisle wasn't the right step for me, so if there's any clubs out there that need a centre-half, give me a call.

"I'm looking to stay in England, but we will see what pops up."

By Jake Sanders sports@southwarknews.co.uk Having grown up less than seven miles from The Den, former Millwall defender Phil Coleman turned out more than 50 times for the club at senior level across two spells, but probably didn't envisage perhaps his finest hour in a Lions shirt coming in the club's first ever FA Youth Cup victory in 1979.

The 59-year-old, who was a product of the club's academy and used to watch from the terraces as a boy, played a major part in the Lions' memorable win 41 years ago, featuring in every round before leaving his mark on the competition by doubling Millwall's lead in the final against Manchester City in the second leg, in front of a packed out crowd at The Old Den. Coleman goes back to the start of his journey as a Lions youngster.

He said: "Going back to about 1975, a lot of us were from were from all over South London - East London, Reading, Slough - came together as 15-year-old schoolboys. We all signed schoolboys forms together. We progressed into apprenticeships in the old days where we were scrubbing boots and cleaning changing rooms, scrubbing the bath after matches, putting the divots back onto the pitch and sweeping the terraces.

"The vast majority of us did a twoyear apprenticeship and we were joined by a few school boys, and when you knitted the whole lot together as George Petchey, Terry Long and Billy Neal, who was the coach, we ended up winning the FA Youth Cup in 1979.

"I played in every round home and away and scored in the final. I remember coming out of the tunnel and there was a full Den. There weren't many spaces. I don't remember how full The Den was. I've been told 8,000, I have been told 10,000, but if you got 10,000 at The Old Den for a kid's game, that was a tasty crowd. I always came out of the back of the queue and walked up the two little steps onto the pitch. When the halfway line is full up, you think 'wow, this is an occasion.'

"The first leg was away in Manchester, and fair play, there must have been about 500 Millwall fans that travelled to that final. Great support up there, great support at Everton, and great support at Nottingham Forest."

Having beaten Sunderland in the round before the quarter-finals, Millwall faced a crunch last-eight clash at Nottingham Forest after earning themselves a replay thanks to a fine comeback in the initial meeting. And Coleman remembers one famous quote from Brian Clough which was relayed to the Young Lions ahead of their quarter-final replay at the City Ground - giving them extra motivation ahead of the tie.

"We knew Forest were a good side," Coleman admitted. "They had three or four players that ended up becoming pros under Brian Clough. We knew one or two of the Forest youngsters, and the word that came back was at the start of the away draw, because we had to replay, was that Cloughey had gone into his youngsters’ dressing room and said 'a bunch of wide boys are coming up here from South London, you'll stuff them.'

"We beat them 1-0 and lost Dean Horrix to a fractured skull, God bless him, and we defended well.

"You just know when you had a

Coleman recalls Millwall's 1979 FA Youth Cup victory

'Brian Clough said we were the best youth team he'd ever seen' good game because I was covered in blood, covered in mud. Peter Gleasure is covered in mud, Paul Roberts is covered in mud, we have defended for long periods and we came away with a 1-0 win. But we could do that, we had some right tough cookies in that side and had some right tasty players and we could do both. You wanted to fight?

We would have a fight. You wanted to play? Kevin O'Callaghan, Tony Kinsella, these guys could play.

"After the game, Brian Clough went into their changing room - which got relayed back to us - and said 'you've just been beaten by the best youth team that I've ever seen.'"

Less than two weeks after that FA Youth Cup triumph, Coleman, who'd clearly caught the eye of first-team manager George Petchy, was handed his senior Lions debut against West Ham at The Old Den. Starting at centre-half, the then 18-year-old found himself partnering club legend and alltime record appearance-maker Barry Kitchener.

Coleman recalls one story in particular from that afternoon when Millwall ended their 46-year wait for a victory over the Hammers.

He said: "My first-team debut was against West Ham, beat them 2-1 playing beside Kitch. I learnt more in

that game than the rest of me 20 years.

I'll give you one example - West Ham were having a bit of a spell, we were 2-1 up in about the 68th-minute, and they're having a few attacks, they've got Bryan Robson, Trevor Brooking and David Cross and Kitch has gone down just outside the area.

"I went to him 'what's the matter' and his exact words were 'F off, I'm having a breather.' And I'd never seen that before. 'Kill the game, kill the game,' he said. He must have been down for two minutes and he killed their momentum, now they're doing it for fun these days.

He was miles ahead of his time.

"But as a kid at 18-years-old, I am

learning from the big man. He said, 'I'll take Barry Cross, you just mark Bryan Robson, he won't do anything, just watch him in the box. I'll do all the aerial, all the kicks are coming from Phil Parkes' and to be fair, he won every header.

"I had the easiest game until Robson controlled it on the penalty spot - I am right behind him - it bobbled over his foot, he spun quicker than me and put it in the bottom corner. I got an earful from him, 'told you to get tight.'

Robson just walked around the pitch and scored one goal, it was like Kitch had read the book and knew what West Ham were going to do."

"That in turn leaves you in a bit of a predicament with a smaller income due to no fans being there. I think most managers and most clubs are going to have to accept that they're not going to do quite as much business as they maybe would in different circumstances, but we are still looking to do two or three things.

"It would be unfair to name names and talk individually about players, but there are quite a few players that if the deals are right for us then we will try and pursue them. At the moment there are conversations, and we will see where those conversations lead."

Over the previous few seasons, Millwall have headed off to Portugal for their training camp, but with the Coronavirus pandemic causing travel restrictions in Europe, the Lions will remain closer to home.

Rowett said: "We have a UK training-camp planned for five days, so we're heading off there because it's not as easy heading off aboard, and obviously footing the cost of that when there's so much lack of stability in terms of what you can and can't do.

"I think that will be important in terms of getting the players together and building that togetherness.

"Pre-season friendlies are a bit strange due to the fact there are still no fans allowed, but we still need to get those competitive games in. We are well on the way to organising quite a few of them, I'm not sure of the complete list of confirmed clubs, but the way we like to do it is build it up.

"We will try and start with maybe a National League/ League Two side and then build it up to a League One side then to a Premier League side."
