Neil Coyle tore strips out of Piers Morgan last week, telling him to “go F**** himself” after the Good Morning Britain host claimed MPs were using murdered Jo Cox - friend of Coyle’s - for their “viciously tribal Brexit war”.

Coyle described Morgan as a “waste of space, air and skin”, who made him “sick”, with Morgan retorting that MPs throwing insults shouldn’t dare to lecture others on their behaviour.

Morgan had tweeted: “British politicians now using their murdered former colleague Jo Cox to wage their viciously tribal Brexit war.

“Parliament has reached a new low, on all sides. Disgraceful.”

The row erupted after Parliament returned last week, with the prime minister facing the music over the Supreme Court ruling that the prorogation had been unlawful.

Johnson’s language divisive and toxic, and claimed it was directly leading to threats against politicians and hate crime across the UK, invoking the memory of their murdered colleague, who was killed by a far-right activist.

In response to their criticism, Johnson branded claims the increasingly toxic political debate was dangerous as “humbug”, and claimed the best way to honour Cox’s memory would be to get on with Brexit.

Coyle, who previously branded Boris Johnson a “d**k” on live TV, has never been one to shy away from saying what he really thinks.

In this case, the comments were deeply personal, as he and Cox were close friends and colleagues.

Since her death, he has been a keen supporter of the Jo Cox Foundation, the charity set up in her memory, which aims to build a fairer, more compassionate society.

Outspoken MP Coyle had - just last week - claimed he was cleaning up his act, after constituents complained about his potty mouthed tendencies.

Speaking to this newspaper after announcing he had made it through Labour’s selection process, the slightly sheepish Labour MP said he had listened to his members and constituents’ views.

“Some of my members have raised it with me, often they agree with me, but say I just don’t need to be that crude,” he admitted, saying he would be aiming to avoid turning the air quite so blue.

“One said ‘I don’t want to see that done effectively in my name’, and I have taken that on board.

The Liberal Democrats have announced who will be challengingHarrietHarman for her Camberwell and Peckham seat in the next general election.

Julia Ogiehor says along with her clear Remain stance, her experience growing up in the constituency makes her a strong contender.

The 33-year-old grew up in Queen’s Road and Walworth Road and went to school in north London before joining Lewisham College and embarking on a career in the health charity sector.

She has lived in Muswell Hill for four years, and is currently a Lib Dem councillor in Haringey, as well as juggling a day job working for Luisa Porrit, the MEP for London.

She said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Camberwell and Peckham, the area that moulded my formative years.

“People in this area have been represented by Labour for generations, but it is clear that Jeremy Corbyn will not stand up for us and commit to stopping Brexit on day one.

“Outside of Brexit, this area needs an MP who will

challenge the government to invest in our young people and tackle rising violent crime.”

Ogiehor told the News she was “forever worried” that her two teenage brothers, who live in Southwark, will become caught up in youth violence.

In Haringey she has successfully lobbied for more funding toward youth services and the introduction of a safe haven scheme to help prevent youngsters at risk.

Millwall fan Jad Bayram discovered the war hero’s medal near to The Den - and needs your help!

A Millwall fan is hunting for the family of a World War One hero after finding his mudencrusted medal near to The Den.

Lifelong Lions fan Jad Bayram (pictured) stumbled across Lance Corporal James Cookman’s medal as he made his way to Saturday’s game versus QPR. It sparked a search to reunite the medal with the war hero’s family – and your help is needed.

“The aim for me is to get the medal back to the family, whoever that may be. If that was my grandad I’d want it back,” said the 24-year-old VIP executive.

Jad discovered the mud-stained medal while walking near Bermondsey’s Ilderton Road on his way to the game, and after cleaning it up, revealed L.Cpl Cookman’s name on the back.

The clue was enough for Jad to uncover where L.Cpl Cookman was born, when he died and details of his military action in France – but so far, tracking down living relatives

has not been possible.

“Everyone has said to me, ‘Don’t give up because we will find who he was.’ It’s got no sale value, but it’s got huge sentimental value. And whoever L.Cpl Cookman was, he’s a hero,” said the 24-year-old.

The medal is thought to be a 1914/15 Star, given to officers who saw battle against the Central Powers between Aug 5, 1914 and December 31, 1915.

The soldier, from Battersea, is believed to have landed in France in December 1914, and appears on the casualty lists for the Royal Irish regiment on May 16, 1915.

He is known to have survived the war, and is believed to have had a wife called Ellen and a son called Peter – but here the trail ends.

“I’ve got a couple of people searching for the blood-line because apparently his son did not have any kids,” said Jad. “He was a south London boy, but I don’t know how the medal made its way to Bermondsey.”

A rush of Millwall fans have now joined the Lions supporter in his quest to reunite the star with the war hero’s relatives – some even from

the other side of the world.

“I’ve been kind of overwhelmed by the amount of support I’ve had,” he said. “A lady in Australia has even been helping … it’s been crazy.”

What we know so far about L.Cpl James E Cookman: The war hero was born in 1892, and is listed as being posted to France during World War One on December 19, 1914.

He was later listed as being among the wounded of the Royal Irish Regiment on May 16, 1915.

He survived the war, and is thought to have passed away in London in 1958.

L.Cpl Cookman had a wife called Ellen, whom he married in 1920 after the War, and a son called Peter.

His home address was listed as 47 Vardens Road, Battersea – so it is not clear how the medal came to be in Bermondsey near to The Den. James’s son, Peter, is not known to have had any children – so the search continues for the war hero’s living relatives.

Canada Water will play host to London’s largest Oktoberfest celebration for six weeks – attracting up to 20,000 people.

The Doktoberfest event will see the transformation of a 35,000sq.ft. riverside warehouse into a 1,500 capacity Munich-style Bierkeller.

The event, which launches on Thursday, October 10, runs every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6pm until midnight.

The organisers have pledged an authentic-looking hall with Lederhosen, an oompah band and performances from cabaret artists.

“We are going to create a genuine Munich beer hall in the middle of docklands to celebrate this great German tradition, with the best Bavarian beer and we’re going to do it with a bit of a twist and a little London style,” said the event organiser, Denis McCourt.

“We’ll have some breath-taking circus performers, great bars and delicious food. We’re confident that this will be the most stylish and highend Oktoberfest party in the capital.”

Also promised are a Bavarian blue and white draped canopy ceiling, live music stage, DJ booth, champagne and cocktail bar and VIP areas.

Food stalls will also sell traditional Bavarian cuisine including the worldfamous Bratwurst sausages.

The programme, at Unit 1, Canada Water Retail Park, will also see a special LGBT-themed Oktoberfest event on October 12, a Halloweenthemed fest on the 31st and a ‘Day of the Dead’ fest on November 2.

Tickets start from £10 for general admission and start at £15 for a reserved bench seat which comes with a free litre stein of beer on arrival.

VIP ticket prices start from £50 and includes complimentary food and drink.

British Land’s £3.3bn Canada Water Masterplan was unanimously approved by councillors on Tuesday night.

It will see the transformation of 53 acres of Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays over fifteen years.

The colossal scheme, the largest in Southwark history, will see the creation of around 3,000 new homes, of which 35 per cent are affordable, up to 20,000 new jobs and a new leisure centre among other benefits.

Three plots as part of the first phase were approved in detail, with the rest of the Masterplan approved in outline.

Concerns had been raised by a delegation of objectors over the twopart marathon meeting, most notably around transport.

Last week it was alleged by the Canary Wharf Group, a rival to British Land, that the Masterplan would be a “catastrophe” for the already crowded Jubilee Line – and that up to £100m was missing in transport investment.

But a British Land representative told councillors that they had been ‘misled’, adding: “What’s apparent from the sign-

off from TfL is that they’re confident the [transport] package we’ve put together is sufficient to mitigate our impact.”

The £33m measures include increased capacity at Surrey Quays, more staff at Canada Water station and two new bus routes.

The meeting also heard from supporters of the scheme, including Rotherhithe residents and councillors for Rotherhithe ward.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to create a world-class town centre,” said Cllr Bill Williams, (Labour, Rotherhithe.)

He added that the scheme provided a “fantastic example on how we can deliver on our promises to provide more social homes.”

However Cllr Nick Johnson (Lib Dem, Surrey Docks) opposed the scheme, saying: “There’s much to commend in this Masterplan …

Canada Water station is regularly closed in the morning rush hour due to overcrowding.”

He added that if the plans were passed as they were, residents would be consigned to “decades of transport chaos.”

The decision did not always appear easy, with committee members

speaking variously of “going back and forwards” (Kath Whittam, Labour, Rotherhithe) and “up and all over the place” (Cllr Newens, Labour, Dulwich Village) over approving the plans.

“I believe on balance this is an excellent scheme,” concluded committee chair, Cllr Martin Seaton (Labour, North Walworth.)

Referencing concerns previously raised that the scheme’s social housing was being ‘segregated’ in a site near to Russia Dock Woodland, he said: “I went to K1 [the plot] last night, and it’s a wonderful location to live, I would’ve thought.”

The remarks drew applause from supports of the scheme in the crowded hall. The green-light has been welcomed by council leader, Peter John.

He said he was “delighted” that the vision for Canada Water had been approved, drawing attention to the “hundreds of new social rent homes” the scheme will deliver.

British Land’s Emma Cariaga added: “We are committed to continuing to engage and work with the local community to deliver the project and ensure that the Masterplan benefits those living, working and studying in Illustrative view of ‘the cuts’ the new retail streets leading to the twon square the area for years to come.”

Walworth pensioner jailed after stabbing to death his plumber

A pensioner from Walworth who admitted stabbing to death a plumber who was working in his flat has been sentenced to ten years behind bars.

Sixty-eight-year-old William Treadwell, from Madron Street, pleaded guilty the manslaughter by diminished responsibility of 63-yearold Gary Amer last year.

He was sentenced on Monday, September 30.

Mr Amer was found by officers and paramedics after they were called to the Walworth home at 2.02pm on August 17, 2018.

He was unresponsive and bleeding heavily, with two large knives in his chest, and pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem found he had died from multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma to the head.

Mr Amer had been repairing a broken boiler at the property when he was attacked and it was said he was stabbed over 30 times.

Around an hour after the 999 call, Treadwell phoned police from the Fox on the Hill pub in Camberwell.

Officers arrested him at at 3.25pm and launched a murder investigation.

After his arrest, Treadwell said to a police constable: “I’ve done a terrible thing.”

He was charged and appeared at Camberwell Magistrates’ Court on August 20, 2018.

Treadwell appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, August 12, where he pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

He was sentenced on Monday, September 30.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Blair, from the Met’s Serious Crime Command, said: “The injuries inflicted on Gary Amer were horrifying and it is only right that Treadwell has been sentenced today and held to account for such a brutal killing.

“My thoughts are with Gary’s partner, his family and friends.”

Joshua Boadu’s killers were told to ‘burn in hell’ as they were jailed for life on Monday for his ‘senseless’ murder.

Denilson Davis, 21, and a 16-yearold boy who cannot be named, were sentenced after Joshua Boadu, 23, was knifed in the chest in Bermondsey on June 11 last year and sped away from the scene.

Last week the pair were convicted of murder following a trial at the Old Bailey.

A third man, nineteen-year-old Matthew Adebiyi is being sought by police after fleeing to Nigeria following the broad daylight stabbing of popular Joshua, known as SJ. As Davis and the youth were jailed today, a friend of Mr Boadu’s screamed out from the public gallery of the Old Bailey: “I hope you go to hell and burn to ashes.”

But the nonchalant 16-year-old killer could be seen yawning and combing his hair as he appeared in court via video-link from HM Cookham Wood in Kent for the sentencing.

Judge Mark Lucraft QC jailed the pair for life for Joshua’s murder, for which police have never been able to establish a motive.

The trial heard how Davis drove to the scene in a Peugeot on Bermondsey’s Linsey Street with the sixteen-year-old as his passenger.

SJ was seen on CCTV cameras cycling across Linsey Street at 6.11pm, walking back across the road two minutes later, before disappearing from view at 6.14pm.

Just minutes later he had been stabbed and was seen on camera running towards Lucey Way. At the same time the Peugeot could be seen driving out of Linsey Street and away from the scene.

Witnesses described seeing SJ pushed up against a parked car and being surrounded by three men, all of whom began attacking him.

One then produced a knife and stabbed him. One of the trio was wearing a distinctive blue tracksuit, matching Davis’s clothing at the time.

SJ managed to duck under the arm of one of his attackers before seeking refuge at an address on Lucey Way. The investigation discovered that both Davis and the youth tried to call Joshua after the attack.

Jurors also heard that while Joshua later lay in his hospital bed suffering from chest, neck and arm injuries, the youth and Adebiyi were filmed in a “celebratory mood” at around 11.30pm in a Peckham Rye recording studio.

The stabbing sadly caused the 23-year-old’s death just over a week later in King’s College Hospital.

Joshua’s grieving family revealed that he had been excited for his firstever family holiday to Canada the day after his stabbing, and paid tribute to their beloved SJ, saying he was full of ‘untapped potential’. He had hoped to become an engineer.

“Words cannot begin to describe how life has been since Josh’s passing and he will be forever in our hearts,” said SJ’s grieving family in a statement read in court.

“Words cannot describe how the heartache and emotional anguish this senseless killing has caused and the impact on the family has been astronomical.

“Josh had his whole life ahead of him and he was full of so much untapped potential, but his life was cut short due to a vicious and senseless murder.

“Things will never be the same for us and we have to live with this for the rest of our lives.”

Davis, was arrested at an address in Innes Street, Peckham, on November 27. The 21-year-old, of Montgomery Avenue, Hemel Hempstead, initially denied any involvement but later admitted he was at the scene.

The 16-year-old refused to answer police questions when he was arrested on 13 February but later insisted he had nothing to do with the killing.

BOY ‘THROWN 100 FEET FROM TATE PLATFORM’ NOT ABLE TO SPEAK, MOVE OR EAT, SAY PARENTS

The boy ‘thrown’ from the Tate Modern is not able to speak, eat, or move most of his body, his parents have said.

The six-year-old was allegedly hurled from the tourist attraction’s viewing platform early last month, and was seriously injured after falling over 100 feet.

A seventeen-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the fall.

In an emotional update posted online, the little boy’s parents spoke of their anguish that their son could not understand why he was unable to eat even a little bit of yoghurt.

He has since begun to move his tongue, right arm and hand, they added, after sustaining bleeding on the brain, and a fractured spine, arms and legs.

“Our little boy doesn’t know anymore how to speak, to eat or to move his body but he begins to do his best to move his tongue, his right arm and hand,” they said in an update posted online on Sunday.

“We see his efforts. We believe with all our heart that he will find the way, from his head, to do everything again.

He is very brave.

“He keeps on smiling and reacting to our jokes. We begin to see also, unfortunately, his suffering, since two days, when he understands that he does not manage to move or eat.

“Actually, he understands everything, but doesn’t understand why he cannot manage to eat or swallow a little bit of yoghourt [sic] for instance. And he wants so much to be able to do it.”

A fundraiser set up for the boy and his family, who are French nationals, has raised nearly €100,000 for the six-yearold to receive gold standard care.

The page was set up by well-wisher Vicky Diplacto, who was not known to the family. “I have started this campaign as it is a truly horrendous incident,” said the nurse, explaining why she set up the page.

“My family were unfortunately in a similar situation five years ago when my brother suffered a similar accident.”

However, the little boy’s parents have also spoken of their hope that he will make a full recovery, adding that they felt they have to remain strong for him.

“Today, we want to tell you that we don’t have the choice: we have to be strong for our little boy,” the update continued.

“First because he keeps on smiling and making progress bravely, and secondly because we see that you count on us to take care of him.

“And we sincerely thank you for that.

We will do everything to keep strong and take care of him. We promise. We hope we will have better news for you later.”

Neither the boy, nor his alleged attacker, can be named for legal reasons.

The seventeen-year-old is due to stand trial next year.

An amended application has been submitted for a former Rotherhithe pub which was controversially approved by council officers.

Residents launched a legal challenge at their own time and expense against proposals for six flats on the site of the Clipper pub in Rotherhithe Street. 400 residents had also signed a petition against the ‘eye-sore’ proposals.

In June, three campaigners won a successful legal bid against the officer-approved plans as it did not properly consider density – meaning council authorities had to pay their costs.

Now amended plans have been

submitted for the site, including a reduction in height and the removal of a back extension.

However, campaigners have alleged the amended design of the building would still be “out of character with the surrounding area” and would “drastically damage the visual amenity of the local area.”

After their legal bid, the plans must now be considered by a committee of councillors. Consultation has opened on the plans, which can be found under the reference ‘18/ AP/3420’.

The deadline for comment is today, Thursday October 3. A date has not yet been set for the plans to be heard.

The developer, Designer London Developments Ltd, have been contacted for comment.

A terminally-ill Millwall fan’s ‘final holiday’ with his family was cancelled after Thomas Cook went bust last week.

Season ticket-holder, Ty Hemblade, and wife Sam were due to fly to Kos in Greece this Monday with family to enjoy a final break together after he was sadly told his cancer was terminal.

The holiday would have been the first time 52-year-old Ty had managed to have a break with all of his four children, Ashley, 24, Bradley, 20, Sian, 28 and James, 27.

“When we found out the news, everyone wanted to come,” the 52-year-old told the News. “It was going to be one final family bash.

“There’s people worse off than us with this Thomas Cook situation, but there’s no guarantee I will get another holiday next year. It just hits you.

Former firefighter Ty, who lives in Kent, stopped treatment two months ago after doctors told him there was nothing more they could do for his illness.

“I’ve got renal cancer and secondary lung cancer and there’s modules in my liver as well,” he said. “There’s no operation they can do now, it’s in the system, that’s it.

“It’s all about quality of life now, that’s what it’s about.”

Doctors are not able to tell Ty, who has formerly won an award for volunteering with Cancer Research UK, how long he has left to live.

Wife Sam, a nanny, had worked “days, nights and weekends” said Ty in order to be able to afford the tenday break to the Greek island, which cost about £350 a head.

“She’s been working her nuts off to get this holiday, I think the situation is affecting her as well.”

Now friends at Millwall FC have

rallied around Ty to fund another final holiday with his family at the time they have all booked off work.

A ‘Ty’s 1 wish’ fundraising page, suggested by pals Steve Taylor, Roy Evans and set up by Ellen Butler, has so far raised £5,500 of a £6,000 goal at the time of going to press.

The family are still hoping to get away – but have encountered difficulties finding flights, as other airlines have hiked up their prices in the wake of Thomas Cook’s collapse. The spike in prices has led to accusations of ‘profiteering’ out of holiday-makers’ misery.

Ty paid tribute to Milwall fans for their donations to the fundraiser, many of whom he says are strangers.

“I’m totally amazed,” he said.

“Everyone knows that Milwall sticks with Millwall. There’s a whole lot of things that fans do that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Everyone should know what Millwall does for others,” he added.

An illegal skin whitening product sold from the East Street shop

Toxic skin-lightening creams which act like paintstripper are being sold on high streets across the country, including in Southwark, councils have warned.

The Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils in England and Wales, have warned people to avoid the creams containing dangerous banned ingredients after a boom in sales.

Many of the creams – marketed at black and minority ethnic customers – contain the bleaching agent hydroquinone, which can remove the top layer of skin, and can even cause fatal liver and kidney damage. Others include ‘potentially deadly’ levels of mercury, said the LGA. The association added Southwark Council was one of the most proactive enforcement bodies in the country for tackling people selling illegal skinlightening products.

“Skin creams containing banned ingredients are very dangerous and could seriously damage your health, scar you for life and even kill you, so they should be avoided at all costs,” said Cllr Simon Blackburn, of the LGA. “Consumers should always check

the ingredients of their skin creams, be suspicious of very low prices which are likely to indicate the lotion is fake and potentially harmful, and never use a product containing hydroquinone.

“If the product doesn’t display the ingredients at all, then don’t use it.”

Southwark’s Trading Standards has led a number of raids on shops selling the banned products in the borough – including securing a jail sentence in one case, believed to be the first of its kind.

It has secured nine guilty convictions for the sale of the toxic skin-lightening substances since 2015.

Among them was the conviction of Walworth shopkeeper Mohammed Iqbal Bharadawala in August last year for supplying the illegal products.

Bharadawala, then aged 45, from Heigham Road, East Ham, was handed a 20-month jail sentence, while the company of which he was a director, Jenny’s Cosmetics Limited, was ordered to pay a £1,500 fine.

Anyone who has bought a skin lightening cream which they think contains banned ingredients should report it to Southwark Trading Standards.

Safe skin lightening creams can be expensive to buy, said the LGA, meaning cheaper, illegal versions are flooding the market.

The Duke of Westminster’s property group has revised its £500m plans for Bermondsey’s former Peek Freans Biscuit Factory after being rejected for not providing enough affordable homes.

The rent-only scheme was thrown-out by Southwark councillors in February after Grosvenor refused to supply 35 per cent of affordable homes in line with council policy.

Councillors had heard how couples would need to earn £30,000 each to rent one of the ‘affordable’ properties – and that there were no homes suitable for those on the poorest incomes.

Now the developer has pledged it would provide 35% ‘affordable

homes’ of which 30 per cent would be at social rented levels on the site if given the go-ahead

by Mayor Sadiq Khan.

It had previously insisted the economics of development could not support more affordable homes or any social rented ones.

“Bringing about positive and lasting change for Bermondsey has always been our focus,” said Simon Harding Roots, Grosvenor Britain & Ireland’s Executive Director.

“However, our original planning application was not good enough. We acted in good faith but it didn’t meet the council’s expectations.

“Since then, we have worked hard to address the clear call from the community, council and Mayor to deliver more affordable housing whilst ensuring the

project, and its many other benefits, can become a reality.”

Among the changes to the site is an increase in the number of homes to 1,548, up from 1342, with around 480 designated ‘affordable’. 140 of those would be ‘social rent equivalent’ added Grosvenor.

Height increases have been made at the centre of the development.

Also included would be a 600-place school for Compass School and more cycling provision.

Grosvenor Britain & Ireland is part of the Grosvenor Estate, headed by Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster.

He is worth a reported £10billion, making him the world’s richest person under 30. A date for the plans to be considered has not yet been set.

The hidden industrial history of old kent road that could be razed or saved

Heritage campaigners fear Old Kent Road regeneration plans could see many of the area’s industrial buildings completely razed, but are increasingly hopeful a new report by Southwark Council could mark a watershed moment in protecting Peckham and Bermondsey’s business heritage.

Many at risk are hidden gems, or outwardly unremarkable buildings with a fascinating history behind their faded facades.

In recent weeks, Southwark Council to award protected status to the J Mills and Sons factory on Ossory Road raising hopes other buildings could yet be saved.

The council could expand existing conservation areas and use article 4

directions - “no demolition orders” - to stop developers from flattening these factories and warehouses.

According to new documents seen by the News, there are at least 21 heritage buildings – industrial or otherwise – that could have a strong case for saving in just one small area off Old Kent Road, from around a 100 analysed by researchers.

Most of these have no formal protection or grade listing, and many have never had their history properly researched or chronicled.

One jewel in Southwark’s crown facing demolition is not a former factory, but instead the old North Peckham Civic Centre, seen by many as one of the finest examples of 20th century architecture on the road.

are under threat precisely because they are “industrial” and deemed to have less worth.

“If you can’t see anything of value anywhere then you aren’t looking hard enough,” he told the News.

“Conservation areas should be extended, with new designations, and Southwark Council’s officers should embrace the industrial and be bold with Article 4 directions.”

Brearley described the former North Peckham Civic Centre, and a group of industrial buildings centred around Glengall Road, as “perhaps our best as yet unacknowledged heritage assets”.

When asked whether the report meant the council would be seeking extra protection for Old Kent Road’s heritage buildings, Cllr Johnson Situ, cabinet member responsible for growth, development and planning at Southwark Council, said: “We have an ambitious vision for the Old Kent Road; to build on its unique creative character and make it a place where industry can thrive, people can enjoy cleaner, greener open spaces with better air quality, more sustainable transport options like cycling and public transport, and we can deliver the social rent and genuinely affordable homes Southwark needs.

“Old Kent Road has a long and interesting history and we have already committed to doing what we can to preserve and promote this heritage through the regeneration work.

Buildings at risk that could yet be saved...

Built in 1966 by the-then borough council the building has been described by Southwark Council as having historic and architectural significance in its own documents, but despite this, current plans show the building knocked down to be replaced with housing, over the new Bakerloo Line extension.

After being sold off, it is now used as a church and out of public ownership.

The building is adorned with a ceramic mural depicting the history of the Old Kent Road, designed by Adam Kossowski, a Polish artist who reached the UK in 1942 who had spent time in a Soviet labour camp. The mural has Grade II listed status.

The mural tells the story of Old Kent Road from Roman times until the modern day Pearly Kings and Queens. In any redevelopment the mural will be saved.

2 Surrey Wharf, 30 Olmar Street

One building in the Horse Shoe Iron Wharves, this part of the former Surrey Canalside was built up in the late 1870s.

The wharves were once home to iron merchants, Surgis & Millbourn Rags & Paper merchants, Ray Bodies Commercial Motor Body Builders, a broom handle factory and, by the 1960s, Dornier Machine Co Ltd and Carriagway Grovers Ltd. The building is the only large-scale surviving remnant of the south side of the canal’s warehouses.

3 Polymex House, 49-53 Glengall Road, former R Whites Factory and London Essence Company Ltd

These two buildings, the former R Whites Factory and HQ of London Essence Company Ltd were built in 1920 and 1951 have no formal protection.

The sites had been home to furniture makers and a cold store until Robert White & Sons, the bottled water manufacturers took over and converted the existing building into a bottle factory until the 1920s, when the London Essence Company (known as Lescol) a perfume, soap and drinks maker, took over.

The factory was badly damaged by bombing in WW2 and rebuilt.

Robert Whites Ltd was famous for

its lemonade and ginger beer – still sold across the UK – and a huge employer across Southwark, which had a thriving bottling industry.

4 90 Hayearle Road and Latona Road, once WJ Harris Pramworks

For more than a century, this site was the manufacturing home of a pram maker, WJ Harris Pramworks, which then became a toy manufacturer, Patterson Edwards.

The existing buildings are post-war.

WJ Harris was founded in the 1880s, with Patterson Edwards shortly after.

By 1931, they employed 100 to make the beautiful hand-carved wooden and metal toys, many of which are now museum pieces.

5 Frensham Street Depot, once Camberwell Borough Council’s “Disinfecting and Cleansing Centre”.

From the late 1880s buildings such as this were used to help control outbreaks of pests and disease in Southwark’s slums and overcrowded housing.

This site, built in the 1930s, was used to destroy clothing and bedding infested with bed bugs or that were believed to be harbouring scabies, and was also the base for the council’s local rodent control.

In the 1930s, offending items were either disinfected with high-pressure steam, boiled in rotary washing machines, or cleaned with antiseptic sprayed gas, such as formalin. Some items would be incinerated.

It is believed to be the only one of its kind still standing.

6 301 Idlerton Road, once Old Kent Road Ambulance Station

You could be forgiven for walking past this building every day and never noticing it, but this small garage, built in 1927, served its community through the Second World War and up until the 1960s but has been largely forgotten and has no memorial plaque commemorating its role or workers.

The architect, G Topham Forrest, was London County Council’s Chief Architect in the early 1900s. Many of his buildings are now Grade listed but he is perhaps best known as one of the designers of two Thames Bridges - and for creating some of the country’s first ever cul-de-sac roads in the garden city movement of the early 20th Century.

A housing shortage and limited available land means we have to build up with new rooftop extensions, says Southwark Council.

The local authority has a target of building 11,000 new social homes by 2043, and says 600 new properties have already been constructed.

But all the time it is losing stock through right-to-buy – and past estate regenerations have also reduced the number of family-sized homes.

Councillor Leo Pollak - Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for new council homes, said building extensions on existing council blocks could unlock “potentially hundreds of new homes” – and all without the huge price tag associated with trying to buy prime Southwark real estate on the open market.

“We’ve spoken to residents about the opportunities and challenges linked to rooftop housing and the kind of preferences that were raised were things like their desire to remain on the top floor, being prioritised for the new homes and improvements being made to the rest of the block.”

“We strongly support any alternative initiatives to achieve more housing in Southwark such as utilising rooftops as long as these are done sensitively and bring benefits for existing tenants and leaseholders,” he told the News.

“As Liberal Democrats we believe that co-design with and early, meaningful engagement with residents leads to the best outcomes. This means proper consideration and consultation with all impacted residents both in the building and surrounding neighbours.

“This is a key area the council must improve on especially on planning and looking after all residents during any disruption.”

Thirteen new council homes in Camberwell Thirteen new council homes will be built at Camberwell’s Sedgmoor Place after gaining planning approval this month.

The new scheme includes four onebed homes, six two-beds, and three homes with three bedrooms.

Half the properties will be offered to local residents in need, likely from the immediate surrounding area.

Two men jailed for illegally exporting carved ivory fans

Dulwich’s new health centre will be named after the late local MP who dedicated 20 years campaigning for it to be built Tessa Jowell.

In a public vote, residents chose to name the centre after the Labour MP from a shortlist of six, including Peckham GP and civil rights activist Dr Harold Moody.

The Dulwich and West Norwood MP and former Health Minister was a psychiatric social worker before her parliamentary career, spanning 1992- 2015. She also played a major role in the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, and dedicated her final months, while suffering from brain cancer, to lobbying for more treatments on the NHS. She passed away in May 2018.

said: “The result of the public vote is testament to Tessa’s legacy, not just as a diligent local MP, but as a prominent health campaigner, who advocated for a new health centre on the site for more than two decades. The decision is also a poignant reminder of the high esteem in which Tessa continues to be held by local people and is a fitting tribute to a much-loved and greatly missed public figure.”

Tessa Jowell Health Centre will open in spring 2020.

The homes will also benefit from bicycle storage.

Southwark Council’s Leo Pollak, the cabinet member responsible for new council homes, said: “I look forward to seeing diggers in the ground and keys handed over to local families.”

Two men from Camberwell have been sentenced for illegally exporting carved ivory fans without the required permits.

Guy Buckle, and Sik-Huang Or, from Champion Hill, were both sentenced on Monday, September 23 to 28 months in prison at Inner London Crown Court.

Both had pleaded guilty to three counts of illegally exporting ivory goods, contrary to the Customs and Excise Management Act 1979.

This act makes it a requirement to have a re-export permit for antique carved ivory items. It is illegal to sell modern ivory.

Although the fans the pair sold abroad were legally purchased in the UK, they had been unlawfully sent to buyers in China, Hong Kong and the USA without the necessary permit issued by the Animal and Plant Health Agency.

The court heard the Met’s Wildlife Crime Unit launched an investigation after two parcels, destined for China, were seized at Heathrow by UK Border Force officials.

Investigating officers discovered 136 carved fans had been exported outside the EU between January 2014 and November 2017 with a sales totalling £145,259.

Both were charged on May 5 of this year.

PECKHAM SHOP FINED IN UNDERCOVER COUNCIL STING

A Peckham shop and sales assistant have been fined over £2,600 in total after Southwark Council Trading Standards deployed a 16-year-old female volunteer to test purchase a knife.

Shop worker, Jerrom White, sold a £5 ‘snap-off’ knife to the sixteen-yearold girl at Peckham Spares in February, Camberwell Green Magistrates heard – even though she could not produce ID when asked.

Little known to the shop and its staff member, the youngster was working with Southwark Council’s Trading Standards

to test knife sales at the Peckham Hill Street establishment.

An under-cover community warden was in the shop to observe the sale which was part of an ongoing Home Officefunded enforcement programme.

It is understood that neither 31-year-old White, of SE15, nor the company which runs the store, Harpreet Bansal Limited, attended the court case on September 23.

“This trader fell well short of what we expect and sold a knife without taking the vital steps necessary to check the age of the purchaser,” said Cllr Evelyn Akoto, Southwark’s cabinet lead for public health.

“The onus is on all of us to create a safe environment for our community and

we will continue to work closely with Southwark businesses, to ensure that they follow the best practice when stocking and selling knives, as we all know that in the wrong hands use of a knife can have devastating consequences.”

White was fined £200 with a victim surcharge of £30. The company was fined £1,000 for the sale, plus £1279.40 in costs and a £170 victim surcharge.

It is illegal to sell knives, blades or razor blades to minors, and carries a fine and up to six-months prison sentence.

The news comes after fellow Peckham establishment, Khan’s Bargains, alongside two of its employees were fined more than £3,000 for an underage knife sale.

It took a month after my input to realise that the buildings would collapse in a gas explosion and a further day to cut off the gas. They later discovered that the building could not be economically repaired.

The advice from ARUPs changed from fire stopping to cut off the gas to demolish the blocks.

Labour is stepping up to the plate on climate change with the Green New Deal, an ambitious programme of policies including loans for those seeking to buy an electric car, a huge expansion in electric vehicle charging points, a programme of home insulation for households on lower incomes and a clear commitment to bringing forward the target timescale for achieving net zero emissions.

I was also pleased to see a bold commitment on social care, making personal care free at the point of need – a recommendation made by the cross-party committee of which I am a member, earlier this year which the Tories have chosen to ignore. Amongst many other highlights, I am also delighted to see a commitment to introduce free nursery education for all two to four year olds, a measure which will make a huge difference to parents and children in my constituency. I’m also really proud that Labour is vowing to completely overhaul the damaging Universal Credit regime and replace it with a system that doesn’t leave tens of thousand of families left hungry every year and in debt.

For single parents it's a lot less than, say, for instance income support was to live off.

On top of having less income to survive on, you can no longer claim free school dinners (which can cost a bomb) because your income shows as over the threshold to be able to claim them, purely because your rent is paid directly to you!

If my rent went directly to my landlord I would qualify for free school dinners but because it come to me first.

They say I get £40 a month too much to be able to qualify for free school dinners.

So now I've even less to live on - it's a bloody joke!

Dual crossword Potentially controversial choices need to be made to secure much-needed housing in the borough

W

as Grosvenor taking the biscuit? That may well the question some readers will ask after reading our story on revised proposals for Bermondsey’s former Peek Freans Biscuit Factory.

In February, Southwark councillors refused to grant permission to the £500m scheme because it did not provide 35% affordable housing or any homes for those on the lowest incomes.

Despite being owned by the Duke of Westminster – worth a reported £10bn – Grosvenor had insisted, both to councillors and this paper, that the project could not afford social homes or more affordable homes.

Now, having gone away with refusal in their ears and tinkered with the project, Grosvenor has revealed it will provide the requisite number of affordable homes, of which thirty per cent would be ‘social rent equivalent’. Mayor Sadiq Khan is yet to decide whether this will be satisfactory.

The shift is to be welcomed – but the case highlights something which is common to much of the development in Southwark.

To meet the goal of providing 35 per cent affordable housing often contentious decisions need to be made – as in the case of councillors rejecting the family firm of the Duke’s initial plans.

This, too, can be seen in the other large-scale development we report this week.

On Monday, councillors unanimously approved the £3.3bn Canada Water Masterplan, which will provide around 3,000 homes, of which 35 per cent are ‘affordable’.

They agonised over the decision, speaking most notably about concerns that the development – Southwark’s largest-ever – would overwhelm transport routes.

But in the end, the crucial need for more homes in this part of the capital outweighed the fears that had been raised.

Development chiefs at Southwark this week also said that building upwards on existing council blocks could unlock ‘hundreds of new homes’ for those most needing them.

They pledge this will be done with full engagement of existing residents – but as anyone who follows development debates knows, density fears are often among the biggest worries when plans are unveiled.

But what this policy and other cases highlight above all is that potentially controversial choices need to be made to secure much-needed housing in the borough.

A family have named their baby daughter in honour of the Evelina Children’s hospital after it saved her life.

Evalina ‘Evie’ Cox needed two open heart surgeries at the hospital to mend a number of life-threatening heart defects – all before her second birthday.

Parents Justin and Jo decided to name her after the Evelina in tribute to the hard-working staff there.

“We’ve had such incredible care from the staff since before she was even born, so we decided to name her Evalina,” said Jo, a hypnobirthing instructor from Margate.

“It’s such a pretty name but also a

tribute from us to the hospital that treated her.

“We added our own stamp by changing the spelling slightly, and we call her Evie for short, but we just wanted to give thanks to all of the hospital staff. We know she wouldn’t be here without them.”

After something unusual was detected on her 20-week pregnancy scan, Jo was referred to Evelina London and learned the extent of their daughter’s serious heart defects.

Evie’s two main blood vessels, the pulmonary artery and the aorta, were swapped over, and she had only one coronary artery instead of two.

Without surgery, she would not have survived. ““We were in shock.

When we heard the extent of Evie’s

conditions, we expected the worst. It was just so much to take in,” said 41-year-old Jo. “Once we’d got our heads around it all, we were reassured that Evelina London would do their best to save her as soon as she was born.”

Her first surgery took place at just six days old and after her first open heart surgery at six weeks old, Evie suffered a cardiac arrest.

Dad Justin, 50, said: “It was the most terrifying thing. Seeing the

doctors over Evie while she was still so tiny trying to start her heart again just didn’t feel real.”

Doctors battled to save her and after an hour and twenty minutes of CPR, Evie’s heart thankfully began to beat again.

Evie spent a further six weeks at Evelina London and during this time suffered further complications, including a collapsed lung, seizures and a stroke.

A new outdoor gym made from melted-down knives taken off the streets has been built in Ruskin Park.

Launched on Friday, the equipment was made by anti-knife crime organisation Steel Warriors, with support from their partner, the Co-op.

Together they hope to build nineteen more using knives handed in, seized, or found during weapons sweeps.

The equipment provides a “calisthenics” workout - using your own body weight to do exercises building strength and flexibility.

Ben Wintour, co-founder of Steel Warriors, thanked the Co-op for its

support and said: “The gyms are designed to generate awareness of the rising issue of knife crime whilst offering young people a safe place to develop more physical and mental confidence to walk the streets unarmed.

“We hope that this 20-gym plan will make a tangible difference to the rising problem.”

Co-op chief membership officer, Matt Atkinson said: “Creating and protecting community spaces where people meet, exercise, play, learn and laugh together is so important for our mental and physical wellbeing.”

The Co-op has also stopped selling single pack knives in its stores, and has instead decided to donate outstanding stock to the charity to use for its metalwork.

Hospital to stop 36,000 deliveries over pollution fears

More than 36,000 truck deliveries to Guy’s and St Thomas’s in central London will be stopped under new plans unveiled to reduce air pollution.

Currently the Trust receives up to 160 deliveries daily, or up to one every three minutes, making it the equivalent “of a small car factory.”

But now the supplies – ranging from bedding to clinical equipment – will be taken to a ‘hub’ in Dartford and taken to the hospitals when they are needed on the day.

The move will help to meet a Mayoral aim to reduce the number of lorries and vans entering central London by ten per cent by 2026.

“London has a real problem with pollution and we see this every day with children coming in for treatment because of respiratory problems,” said David Lawson, chief procurement officer at the Trust.

“This new supply chain hub will reduce the number of deliveries to our hospitals by 90 per cent, which will remove over 36,000 truck deliveries.

A top judge for tribunals, a barrister and blogger as well as an expert solicitor who fights on behalf of leaseholders means that this year’s Southwark Homeowners Council Conference on Saturday is a must for thousands to attend.

The conference, organised by leaseholders and freeholders who live in Southwark Council properties, is taking place this Saturday, October 5, in Camberwell

for the fourth year running.

However, the star-line up this year makes it a must for those wanting to know their rights across the borough. With Judge McGarth, the President of the first-tier tribunals, barrister and blogger Amanda Gourlay as well as Marl Knowles a solicitor from Commonhold and Leasehold Experts Limited all in attendance organisers say that never before have they been able to get the crème la crème of homeowners’ rights together under one roof.

As well as information stalls there will also be the chance for one to

one meetings with organisations including the Citzens Advice Leasehold team.

The free event at the William Booth College at Champion Park will give people the opportunity to hear from various independent organisations about the services and support that are available to them.

CCTV footage could hold the key to murder

CCTV footage from a Dulwich garage of a stolen Audi and a VW Polo believed to be linked to the murder of sixteen-year-old John Ogunjobi in Tulse Hill have been released by police.

John was found collapsed on Greenleaf Close at 10.53pm on Monday, November 5, with stab injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene an hour later.

Footage shows a black Audi Q5 with false plates (LB11 XPJ) and a lightcoloured VW five-door Polo with damage to its offside rear bumper.

Both cars were seen shortly before and after John was attacked.

The black Audi was captured on CCTV at Texaco petrol station in Croxted Road in Dulwich at 10.41pm, having come from the direction of West Dulwich, before leaving toward Norwood Road at 10.53pm.

At the petrol station, the car was filled with petrol by a man in a long, green puffa coat and purple latex gloves.

The next day, the burnt-out remains of the Audi was found on Gunsite Allotments in Dulwich’s Grange Lane.

The vehicle was later discovered to have been stolen from Dulwich’s

independent professions as well as officers on hand to answer your questions no how bills are calculated.

JAILED AFTER ‘PUNCHING WOMAN IN THE FACE FOUR TIMES’ IN THE BACK OF A CAB

A Sydenham man was jailed for two-and-a-half years in prison after a violent, unprovoked attack on a woman in the back of a cab.

Thirty-year-old Xavier Lightbourne from Dartmouth Road (pictured) was sentenced on Wednesday, September 18, after he pleaded guilty to assault and ABH on his victim.

He was also sentenced to twelve

months, to be served concurrently, for breaching a restraining order.

The attack happened on October 18, last year, in a private hire taxi.

The court heard that Lightbourne and the female victim - who was known to him - were picked up in Westminster.

He claimed the woman was drunk and threw her in the back as she tried to get out while it was still moving.

Enraged, the court was told he punched her approximately four times in the face before jumping out as the driver stopped, and then went

into hiding.

The victim needed medical treatment for her injuries.

Police issued a wanted appeal and Lightbourne eventually handed himself into a south London police station on January 30 this year.

He was charged on Tuesday, March 12.

Detective Constable Chris Willey said: “Lightbourne assaulted his victim whilst they were in a moving taxi, when she had no means of escape.

“The fact that he committed this

abhorrent attack in front of the driver shows a level of arrogance, and expectation, that he could do whatever he wanted.

“However, that was clearly not the case and he is now in prison for his actions that day.

“I would like to praise the bravery of this victim for coming forward and contacting us.

“Her presence at court also showed Lightbourne that he would be held to account for his behaviour, leaving him no other option but to plead guilty.”

Passion and violence at Young Vic With acclaimed director Yaël Farber at the helm, Marina Carr’s new adaptation of the Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca’s Blood Wedding takes to the Young Vic stage with evocative passion and violence, writes Rosie O’Connell...

Due to wed, Aoife Duffin’s Bride comes with baggage in the shape of former flame, Leonardo Felix (Gavin Drea). Felix’s family and the Groom’s (David Walmsley) are at the heart of a raging dispute awash with with murder and rape that neither family have ever made peace with. The sullen Bride doesn’t want her Groom and needless to say the nuptials proceed with tragic consequences.

Carr has moved the drama of the two at odds families from the Spanish countryside to rural, accented Ireland.

We do not lose Andalusia completely however, with flamenco guitar and Thalissa Teixeira’s acappella laced throughout. Carr’s language is brutal and visceral, rooting itself in dead family members and oncoming tragedy and yet finding dark humour within itself.

For all its apparent violence and masculine energy, it is the women who are the crux of the piece. Olwen Fouéré as Mother is full of an earthy rage that steals every scene she is in, wonderfully, cuttingly austere and unforgiving in her pessimism and grief. Meanwhile, Annie Firbank’s bawdy Housekeeper brings in much appreciated moments of lightness.

With its sparse staging and performed almost in the round, there is a lingering sense of a bullring, the audience, spectators of the familial field of battle that culminates in fatal bloodshed. The lighting beautifully saturates the space while Leonardo’s aerial rope stallion circles the stage in a stylised simplicity.

Lust for blood, violence and revenge seems the stronger pull than actual lust here. The Bride’s disdain fails to disappear upon fleeing her wedding as it becomes apparent that she longs to leave and find her own freedom, while it is all too clear that Leonardo Felix simply wants what he can’t have. While the outcome is plainly inevitable it is a compelling combination of beauty and brutality.

Revisit and rebirth of Re Re marks the 35th anniversary of the Bermondsey Artists’ Group.

It celebrates the diversity and progression of practices by the membership and charts creative approaches and evolving processes within this diverse group.

The exhibition brings together work by over 50 local artists. Some of the works go back to the early years of the group’s existence; some are from the artists’ current practice. Each of the works has been selected by the artist to reflect upon their membership of the BAG and how their practice has developed during that period; reconsidering, reconstructing and reinventing.

This large-scale group show weaves together multiple voices and histories by artists who live in close proximity to the gallery. This is London at its best; bringing together stories, visions and interpretations of the world around us.

Some artists have chosen to revisit early works, some of which have not survived or have deteriorated, some have been entirely revisited and reenergised, these artists are engaging in dialogue with their former selves and a former Bermondsey.

Many of the artists exhibit pieces from their on-going current practice.

For them, Re has offered an opportunity to consider where they are now as contemporary visual artists in an everchanging London art community.

Many of them recognise that even though their work has changed over the years, they are still working around similar themes, thoughts and concerns.

In Re, we experience multiple voices and lifelong fascinations by artists of all disciplines and at all stages of their careers, all presented together, equally. In essence, this bi-annual show illustrates the rich artistic community of the Bermondsey Artists’ Group which continues to thrive 35 years on.

Re offers an opportunity for us all to understand our present by taking the time to stop and look back. It brings together new and old members of the group that has been instrumental in making Southwark the culturally rich borough it is today.

Get into the Grove at this year’s Walworth History Festival Get Into The Grove at this year's Walworth History Festival when, amongst a multitude of events, young people from 2Inspire will perform their Liverpool Grove inspired drama based on Ed Gray’s painting of the iconic Octavia Hill street.

A former resident of the Octavia Hill Conservation Area, Gray says 'I was a school teacher at the time and I used to walk along Liverpool Grove on my way home. The painting is a celebration of the community I saw there' The artist is known for his many paintings of London and Londoners as they go about their daily business. A Southwark resident for many years he has focused much of his energy on life in the borough. This year's Walworth History Festival have used his 2007 painting of Liverpool Grove to inspire young people from 2InspireYouth to create drawings and paintings

about Walworth.

Ed ran an art session for members of the youth centre to explain his methods and approach and explore the work of artists that have inspired him.

The art workshop looked at social change marked by the different examples of social housing in the area.

Young people from the group will also perform a piece of drama inspired by characters from Gray's original painting.

Visitors to the any of the arts events, films and talks at this year's festival will be able to to buy raffle tickets giving them the chance to win a framed limited edition print of Ed Gray's Liverpool Grove.

The Southwark boy who became Foreign Secretary

I

n the 1960s a gaffe-prone Labour MP and cabinet minister with a fondness for drink became a tabloid fodder favourite, writes Katherine Johnston...

He was a statesman seen by some as the best of his party – and by others as a loose cannon who squandered his potential and resorted to bullying to get his way.

Although he spent most of his career as an MP for the Derby seat of Belper, he was born and grew up in Southwark – rising as high as Labour’s deputy leader under Harold Wilson and foreign secretary.

After Labour won back power, Brown was appointed as the first secretary of state for economic affairs, where as a pro-European, he played a pivotal role in the UK’s rejected - application the Common Market, despite internal opposition and vacillation.

From 1966 until his resignation in 1968 he was the UK’s foreign secretary, and thereinafter returned as a backbencher until he lost his seat in the 1970 general election.

Although they worked closely for many years, Brown and Wilson endured a particularly fractious relationship, with Brown allegedly

visibly drunk whilst paying tribute to assassinated American president John F Kennedy.

He told one interviewer: “Of course, I’ve sometimes woken up the next morning and thought, ‘Damn!’ Of course I’ve sometimes wished I’d kept my mouth shut at dinner.”

One oft-repeated and likely apocryphal story involves Brown in his role as foreign secretary asking a woman to dance during a glitzy ambassadorial visit to Brazil.

The reply came: “There are three reasons why I will not dance. Firstly you’ve had too much to drink, secondly it isn’t a waltz – this is the

George Alfred Brown was born in 1914, in Block I of Peabody’s Stamford Street tenement flats, to a working class family. His father, from Borough, was a truck driver.

Soon after his birth, the family moved Peabody‘s Blackfriars Estate.

Although academically gifted, Brown had to leave school at fifteen to help support his family financially.

A life-long Labour supporter and trade unionist, he later said at eight years old he given our Labour pamphlets in the run-up to the 1922 general election.

Brown joined parliament in 1945, after spending several years as an official in the Transport and General Workers’ Union.

As an official, he had attracted the attention of Clement Attlee while giving a speech at 1939’s Labour Party National Conference, attacking the far left-wing faction of the party.

At this time he was living in Dulwich, at Court Lane, with his wife Sophia Levene and their two children.

As an MP, he quickly was promoted from the backbenches to junior positions including as the oppositions’ spokesperson for defence.

Brown launched an unsuccessful bid for Labour leadership after Hugh Gaitskell’s death, and became deputy to Harold Wilson in 1960.

For all Brown’s capabilities and success, he also harboured insecurities and resentment against what he saw as the leftist, middle class and Oxbridgeeducated wing of the party.

But these qualities also resonated with voters who admired his conviction and willingness to wear his heart on his sleeve.

In 1966 he was appointed as foreign secretary, where he was responsible for the UK’s support of Resolution 242 of the UN Security Council, and one of its original authors.

Adopted in 1967, this landmark statement called for Arab recognition of the state of Israel’s right to exist, in exchange for Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied territories.

But his undoubtable talents and achievements continued to be overshadowed by frequent cabinet bust-ups and public gaffes.

Brown attracted admiration and frustration from his colleagues in equal measure, with many perturbed by the effects of his well-known predilection for the bottle, famously alluded to by Private Eye, which coined the phrase “tired and emotional” for the MP. Despite downplaying his drinking, Brown himself issued a public apology after he appeared on television

Many said although dubious, the story was somewhat believable. Brown is also said to have once curtseyed to Princess Margaret and been unable to get back up and been embroiled in literal Westminster punch-ups.

After numerous threats he eventually did hand in his notice, quitting two years later in 1968, after a set-to over

not being invited to an emergency Privy Council meeting. It was rumoured he was excluded because he was drunk.

Brown spent the next two years as a backbencher, until losing his seat to the Conservatives in 1970, with a majority of over 2,000.

He spent much of the rest of that decade increasingly at odds with the party to which he’d dedicated his life and career.

In 1976 Brown, by now a member of the House of Lords and increasingly embittered, he gave a speech quitting Labour.

“This is the saddest night of my life,” he told reporters. “After 45 years I’ve left for the same bloody reasons I joined”.

On his way out, he famously stumbled and fell into the gutter in front of a cohort of paparazzi.

The day after The Times memorably wrote: “George Brown drunk is a better man than the Prime Minister sober”.

It later became apparently he was a signatory to the Limehouse Declaration, had joined the newly formed Social Democratic Party, along with his brother Ron, who had also been a Labour MP and pro-European.

Brown spent his final years writing columns for the national press, and held several business roles.

During this time his 45-year-long marriage also collapsed - he later remarried.

Brown died on June 2, 1985 in Cornwall, after suffering an internal haemorrhage.

Although his colourful personality and personal demons overshadowed much of his life, he became one of the country’s top political figures, helped gain consensus to push for joining the European Economic Area, and helped to enshrine one of the founding principles of peace in the Middle East.

Not bad for a Southwark boy who left school at fifteen.

Advent Royals 0 Peckham Rye 13 PECKHAM RYE trounced Advent Mighty Royals last weekend as Bobby Redwood scored four goals and Tevel Nicholson grabbed a hat-trick.

The hosts were late to the fixture as they started with just nine men, and their afternoon went from bad to worse in wet conditions.

The Rye were 8-0 up at the break after Shane Gitten and Michael Newton caused havoc out wide and Redwood completed a first-half hat-trick.

Top-scorer Duke Binitie also got in on the rout, and in the second half the Rye didn’t let up as captain Brian Phillips netted before Emannuel Lawal scored with a spectacular volley.

Nicholson got his third and Keenan Rochester and Gitten completed the scoring.

Manager Danny Gibson said: “There will be harder testes to come but we showed discipline and a good footballing mentality to stay focused and get the job done.”

A HAT-TRICK from Ade Yusuff helped Dulwich Hamlet to a thumping London Senior Cup victory over AFC Croydon Athletic on Tuesday evening.

Gavin Rose gave a competitive debut to goalkeeper Charlie Grainger and fielded recent signings Jarvis Edobor and Amos Nasha in his side.

Dulwich dominated from the outset and Connor Hunte saw an early effort cleared off the line. Yusuff had a goal ruled out before he gave the hosts the lead in the 26th minute from Ben Chapman’s pass.

Yusuff then set up Hunte for the second eight minutes before half-time as the Hamlet went into the break in control.

Yusuff should have had another at the start of the second half but missed from close range, before Hunte couldn’t match a scintillating run from midfield with a finish.

The home side restored their threegoal advantage three minutes later as Yusuff got his hat-trick after sweeping home a cross from former Millwall winger Lewis White.

White then curled a shot wide and Chapman was also denied by Taylor, before Dominic Vose added a fifth goal in the last minute. It was a superb effort as he cut inside and curled his shot around Taylor.

Last Saturday, Dulwich drew 2-2 at Chippenham Town in National League South. Luke Haines put the hosts in front before Quade Taylor equalised and a minute from time Daid Ijaha seemed to have won it for the visitors.

But Richard Orlu’s own goal five minutes into added-time gave Chippenham a point.

Dulwich dropped to thirteenth in the table.

SOUTHWARK RUGBY club continued their good start to the new season with a convincing 66-19 victory at the Cage against an Old Gravesendian team struggling for form.

A largely unchanged squad from their opening-day victory against New Ash Green saw the exciting partnership of Gerry Ryan and Hugh Nicholson combine for the first time this season. The home team also welcomed back Matthew Hunt who added experience and athleticism to the second row.

Within ten minutes of the opening whistle Southwark had scored four unanswered tries and the result was never in doubt.

Strong ball carrying from the forwards created an abundance of holes in the away team’s defence for the backs to utilise

their pace and creativity.

It was 45 – 0 at half-time, evidence of the one-sided nature of the game with Ryan and Nicholson bagging seven tries between them.

Old Gravesendians rallied at the end of the match to grab three unanswered scores and take the gloss off what had been a strong performance from the home team.

There are slight concerns remaining about Southwark’s ability to focus for the full 80 minutes, which will be tested later in the season.

Southwark entertain Cliffe Crusaders in the first round of the Kent Vase this Saturday at 3pm.

Double Commonwealth gold for Bermondsey club Ballers through in Cup

LAST WEEK, over 1,000 competitors from around the Commonwealth congregated in Walsall for five days of competition in the senior, junior and veteran judo championships.

Tokei Judo Club from Bermondsey sent their best four players plus a team of supporters to try their luck in the veterans section.

For Fred Itiose, who was competing in the +100kg category, expectations were high. Itiose had won a silver at the senior

event in Cardiff in 2012 and was hoping to go one better seven years later, but now as a veteran.

And he did not disappoint his clubmates or supporters. Itiose won all of his contests quickly and cleanly to pick up his gold medal.

While Itiose was fighting his way to gold on one of the mats, Joe SilmonClyde, in his first-ever international competition, was slowly working his way through the U66kg veterans section.

Less than 90 mins after Itiose celebrated

his gold medal, Silmon-Clyde stepped onto the mat to face a highly-fancied South African competitor in Tokei's second gold medal contest of the day.

The South African pushed forward but Simon-Clyde dropped beneath him and threw him cleanly on to his back for an instant win.

Tokei Judo Club had never won a Commonwealth gold medal in their 44year history - before two came along in the space of 90 mins.

BALLERS FA Youth were in London Cup action last weekend and it was a high-scoring game as they defeated Red Devils United 8-6.

Mecca Maxime-Samuels led the way with a hat-trick, while Darnell Kosoko, Nahshon Bedeau-Francis, Milo Eaves, Ronnie Watson and Stanley Sammland were also on target.

MATT SMITH faces his former club Leeds United this Saturday – with Millwall’s head of recruitment explaining why the forward was targeted by the Lions.

Alex Aldridge, along with Neil Harris and Steve Kavanagh, this summer oversaw the biggest squad transition in the Lions manager’s time in charge.

Smith, 30, was identified as a priority signing with the knowledge that strikers Lee Gregory and Steve Morison were set to leave the club.

The former Fulham striker has made a big impact and his goal at Huddersfield last Saturday was the third this season directly contributing to points gained (five). Morison scored the same number of goals in his last 57 games for Millwall.

Smith was on Millwall’s radar for five years, with Ian Holloway first trying to sign him from this weekend’s opponents in the summer of 2014.

That was a bizarre time for the centre-forward.

After the signing of a new three-year deal ended Millwall’s interest, Smith was told just weeks later by new owner Massimo Cellino that he was being

transfer-listed, and he joined Fulham for £800,000 on the last day of the window.

Harris has been an admirer of Smith since he took over in 2015, and finally landed the player in the summer.

“A lot of people said to me, ‘Matt Smith, Millwall have tried to sign him every year for however long’,” Aldridge said. “But that shouldn’t really be and it wasn’t a consideration for us when we were weighing up whether he would be the best fit for us or not.

“Just because we’d looked at him before doesn’t change the fact that we thought he was the best option available to us in the summer. Matt, in his own words, when we met him, was honest in the things that he can and can’t do.

“Matt’s not going to run in behind defences for 90 minutes and stretch defenders with his pace, he’s never been able to do that.

“But what he’s good at he’s outstanding at in the division: Getting on the end of crosses; winning first contact in the penalty area; getting headers on goal; and scoring from crosses. He is outstanding at those things.

“Rather than look at the things that he can’t do we were fully focused on what he can do. There are lots of clubs in the Championship who don’t or wouldn’t

play to suit Matt’s strengths. Whereas actually we are one of the few that do.

“It is early days and there’s a long season ahead, but it’s great that he’s already scored a couple of early goals and made a positive start. With the players around him – Jed [Wallace], Connor [Mahoney], Jiri [Skalak], Fergie [Shane Ferguson] – we’ve got some good crossers of the ball at the club and we’re good at set-plays. So there were lots of reasons why, in theory, it should have been a good fit.

“It’s obviously very early days and we’ll see how that pans out, but when we weighed up all the various factors we were quite confident it would be a good fit.”

Harris also insists players must have the right mentality to play for Millwall.

Aldridge continued: “In terms of his character, he’s a fantastic professional and we literally couldn’t find anyone that said a single bad word about Matt.

He was really keen to come here, keen to be at a club that was actually playing to his strengths.

“He’d fallen into that place of being somebody’s plan C in a game. He wanted to be somewhere where he had a chance of being plan A and one of the main players. We thought given that opportunity we’d get even more out of him.

“That was our thought process with Matt.”

Mahoney’s corner was fumbled by goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, under slight pressure from Smith, and the striker had the easy task of tapping in from an inch out in the 41st minute.

The recalled Mahoney had earlier been at fault leading to Huddersfield’s opener in the 24th minute. The winger had initially done well to win possession deep in his own half on the right before he dallied on the ball and lost it to Jaden Brown. The left-back quickly fed Karlan Grant whose cut-back was rifled into the bottom corner by Frazier Campbell.

One-nil down to the bottom side who had lost 28 of their previous 33 league games was not a good look for struggling Millwall.

Neil Harris’ side responded well, getting those set-pieces they play for. And after Mahoney’s corner had set up the winner for Smith against Sheffield Wednesday, the winger got another assist.

The Cowley brothers, manager Danny and assistant Nicky, were after their first point in their third game in charge. They were energetic presences on the touchline, both frequently turning around to the home support urging them to turn up the volume.

Their team dominated the second half as Millwall couldn’t protect possession. Frequently the Lions were turned towards their own goal as the Terriers scampered forward with purpose.

Adama Diakhaby was at the menacing forefront of their endeavours. He ran from deep and Shane Ferguson sensed his side were stretched and brought down the winger. The Northern Ireland international was booked and soon faced a repeat scenario, but closer to his own goal this time. Ferguson recognised the danger again and took action.

It resulted in a second yellow card and he was off. Just before he went down the tunnel Ferguson turned around to watch the free-kick, and was a relieved man to see Diakhaby’s effort skim past the post.

Huddersfield had two penalty claims in the second half. Grant seemed to be caught by Shaun Williams, before Diakhaby went down when Jake Cooper stretched an arm out and made contact. Both could easily have been given, but the Lions will claim they were due a slice of luck.

BART BIALKOWSKI knows goalkeepers are going to make crucial errors – but says it’s how you respond to them that really counts.

Bialkowski’s mis-kick in Millwall’s last home game allowed QPR’s Nahki Wells a free run at goal and the striker rolled into an empty net in front of the away end for a 2-1 win.

Poland international Bialkowski was less to blame in the previous fixture at The Den against Hull, though he perhaps felt he could have anticipated Kamil Grosicki’s freekick from 40 yards out that caught everyone by surprise and drifted in.

That followed some impressive displays from the on-loan Ipswich man. He conceded just one goal in his first three games, but then could do little as a rampant Fulham won 4-0 at Craven Cottage.

Even in another defeat at Blackburn, Bialkowski made several stops to prevent a 2-0 scoreline from being a lot worse.

The Lions face one of the most

dangerous attacking sides in the Championship when Leeds arrive in south London on Saturday.

Millwall were minutes away from keeping a clean sheet against them in this fixture last season, before Jack Harrison beat Ben Amos from distance for the away side’s equaliser.

The Lions’ goalkeeping department was unsettled in 2018-19, with Jordan Archer starting the season as No.1 before he was dropped from the squad and Amos took over.

Archer got back into the team from November until March, when David Martin became Harris’ first-choice.

But even Martin, now at West Ham, couldn’t escape the curse as he dropped Solly March’s injurytime free-kick over the line in an FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton to deny Millwall a place in the last four.

That illustrates Bialkowski’s point. The goalkeeper will be keen to make up for his own error against the Hoops by keeping out Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

“It was just a mistake, really, it happens,” Bialkowski said. “I’m in the position where most of the mistakes made are going to mean the ball ends up in your goal. That’s how

it is.

“I just mis-kicked it, the ball bounced just in front of me and I tried to pass it to Coops [Jake Cooper].

Players all over the pitch during a game probably do that a few times but nothing happens. I’m in a position where every mistake can be crucial.

I just need to take it on the chin and move on.

“Goalkeepers are always on our own.

You just have to try to stay focussed for the whole game. It’s sometimes not easy but with experience it becomes easier. It wasn’t the first mistake I’ve made and it’s probably not going to be the last one.

“It’s about how you deal with it.

I used to work with a psychologist when I was at Southampton. That helped me a lot but with experience everything becomes easier.

“We talk everything over with [goalkeeping coach] Lee Turner and we talked after that game as well. LT is brilliant, you can talk to him about everything. He’s always there for us and is a massive help.”

Bialkowski will soon have another rival for his place, when Frank Fielding returns to training after his quad injury. Bialkowski gave

For now, Saturday’s clash has all Bialkowski’s attention. Millwall games against Leeds are more often feisty affairs than not, with backroom staff from both benches clashing in this fixture last season.

“I had messages about the Leeds game after I came here, it’s massive,” Bialkowski added. “It’s massive for the fans, massive for everyone at the club.

“Leeds is a really good club and they’re going to bring a fair amount of supporters to The Den. It’s going to be a great day.

“We know our fans are special. If we play well they’re going to support us for the whole 90 minutes. We need to play well and compete for everything to get the fans behind us.

“Every fan wants to see their team doing well. I understand that expectations are high here, but we

need to be realistic as well. There are so many teams in this division spending millions and millions of pounds. It’s a tough league and money is not everything.

“The commitment, the desire on the pitch, playing with heart, is more important than money.”

Bialkowski has settled at Millwall, and has found a place ten minutes from the training ground on Calmont Road.

His wife and kids are still in Ipswich, as the family decided it didn’t make sense to uproot them as Bialkowski is only on loan for the season.

On the pitch he feels that Millwall shouldz be further up the table.

Bialkowski continued: “We had a really good start to the season but haven’t won as many games as we should have. We should have picked up more points.

“The league is cray, it’s such a long season. I know how this league is, you cannot expect to win a game not giving 100 per cent. You need to out-fight the opposition, out-play the opposition, but it’s never easy.

“We know how it is, how you have to fight, and we have the players to do that.”

Raheem Sterling spoke out after being abused by Chelsea fans last season

MAHLON ROMEO has hailed Raheem Sterling as an important voice in the battle to rid football of racism – as this weekend’s opponents Leeds are embroiled in their own race storm.

Manchester City’s Sterling has been praised for the way he has spoken after alleged racist incidents, having been subjected to abusive chants from Chelsea supporters last season.

Last July, it was confirmed that Chelsea had issued a life ban to a fan who had used “racially abusive language” towards Sterling during a match at Stamford Bridge on December 8, 2018.

Five other Chelsea supporters were temporarily suspended for using “abusive language and threatening and aggressive behaviour”.

In an Instagram post, Sterling laid part of the blame on newspapers, pointing to the apparently different treatment of two players – City teammates Tosin Adarabioyo and Phil Foden – after both had bought houses.

And this week, Charlton Athletic released a statement confirming that an allegation of racial abuse directed at Jonathan Leko by a Leeds player was in referee John Brooks’ report.

It was being investigated by the Football Association.

Sterling was one of England’s best players as Gareth Southgate’s side reached the 2018 World Cup semifinal.

Romeo has noted Sterling’s

City star has shone spotlight on problem – as race storm hangs over Leeds contributions on the racism problem.

“I think it is important,” Romeo said.

“With Raheem, because of his stature and the voice he’s got at the moment, I almost feel like there’s pressure on him to do and say the right thing. And he’s still only young.

“You’re asking a lot of a young man who’s also got to be concentrating on his football at the same time. Everyone knows what’s right, everyone knows what’s wrong. It’s just a matter of doing more right than wrong.

“I’ve grown up in London. There’s nothing I’ve had to deal with too much in this country or in my neck of the woods, but it is something I have dealt with in my life at some points.

“With Raheem at Chelsea it was interesting because he was one of the best players at the World Cup, helping the team to [the semi-finals]. Then he comes back to his country playing football in his own league, one of the best leagues in the world, and he’s getting abuse from the same fans that were probably cheering him on a few months before.

“It’s a weird one. It’s unique, I don’t know if there would be many places in the world that would support someone playing for their country and then give them such abuse.”

The spotlight has also been on Italian football this season after

monkey chants directed at Inter Milan striker Romelo Lukaku by Cagliari fans. Inter supporters then released a statement defending those same opposition fans.

“It’s unique, I don’t know if there would be many places in the world that would support someone playing for their country and then give them such abuse.”

That was followed by the sacking of Italian football pundit Luciano Passirani for a racist remark about Lukaku.

Romeo continued: “To be honest, I think Italy is way off it. I don’t know what’s going on over in Italy. I’ve never been there, I probably will go at some point because there are some nice places. But I don’t know what’s going on.

“I heard a reporter said something wild about Lukaku. The fans of the

team he’s playing for said, ‘don’t take it personally’.

“I’m not worried about Italy, but from the outside looking in it seems they are way off it.”

Last week, Sterling was again asked for comment after City team-mate Bernardo Silva was accused of racism for an image he posted on social media comparing Benjamin Mendy to a cartoon character.

Sterling and City boss Pep Guardiola defended Silva, saying it was a joke between two friends.

Romeo stresses it’s important to look at the “intent” behind such incidents.

“It’s something he hasn’t thought about,” Romeo said. “Obviously there was no malice or intent behind Bernardo Silva’s [tweet] or what he’s done.

“But in this day and age if you want to fix things you have to be careful with things like that. If that’s the banter that you’ve got between you and your friend, maybe don’t let everyone else know.

“I didn’t have a problem with it personally, but I can see how it is a problem. I feel like he shouldn’t have put it out there, but I don’t think there was any bad intent. That’s the main thing when it comes down to it.

You have to look at what is the intent behind it.”

Romeo’s focus is now fully on Leeds, with Millwall aiming to go into the international break on a positive note.

The right-back could play with stitches in a wound on the back of his head after being accidentally caught by the knee of Frazier Campbell last Saturday at Huddersfield.

Romeo will need a clear head on Saturday, and believes concentration will be key to getting a result.

“That’s always the fixture that I know a lot of fans keep an eye out for, home and away. It will be exciting to be a part of the atmosphere, for both sides,” Romeo added.

“They’re going to have the ball, they’re going to be bringing out all the tricks to try to break us down.

“Concentration is the main thing.

When a team has the ball for so long and they might not be doing much with it, it’s easy for you to lose concentration. We have to stay concentrated. There are very few games where we have most of the ball. We’ve got to stay switched on for the whole 95, 97, 100 minutes, whatever it might be.

“The gaffer said early on we’re not going to win every weekend. There are going to be difficult times in the season, but it’s nine months and we’re only just into October.

“There will be times when you’re struggling for a win but it’s not going to last forever. We will get criticism and I understand it from the fans’ point of view, but there are however many games left. It’s a long old season and there are going to be good times and bad times.

“You can’t get too high or too low.”

SHANE FERGUSON returns from suspension against Leeds United on Saturday as Millwall aim to go into the international break with a positive result against their bitter rivals.

Northern Ireland international Ferguson missed the trip to Luton Town on Wednesday night as he served a one-match ban for two yellow cards against Huddersfield Town last weekend.

Jason McCarthy is a doubt with a toe injury, while goalkeeper Frank

Benches clashed last season after Leeds goaded hosts Fielding and winger Jiri Skalak are still out.

Lions boss Neil Harris has to decide whether to bring Ferguson back into his team for his side’s third game in eight days.

“We have to look at individual players. Without giving too much away, I’ve been honest to say that we have been carrying injuries,” Harris said.

“It’s about picking the right players for the occasion and the game and it’s down to players to show they deserve to be in the side.

“Murray’s played left-back all season. We just thought last weekend

against Huddersfield and the way they set up that Fergie would be a good option for us. I thought he was excellent.

“Murray came on and showed his professionalism and defensive qualities. They’re two good full-backs, one that hopes to play international football for Scotland and one that regularly plays for Northern Ireland.”

The Den is set to be close to a sellout for the clash, with little love lost between both sets of fans. Leeds have sold their full allocation and will fill the top tier of the away end.

“I was fortunate to play in so many Millwall-Leeds games home

and away,” Harris said. “They’re always so competitive and very close encounters, and I don’t expect this one to be any different.

“The players will need to feed off a highly-charged atmosphere because three games in a week is really tough.

“We need to make sure, as we were in most parts against QPR, that we’re on the front foot and competitive.

We need to make sure there are no individual errors that give the opposition a foothold in the game.

“We have to feed off the atmosphere and the energy in the ground. The players have to be at their best individually, and collectively as a

unit in and out of possession be the best we can.”

There was conflict between those in the technical areas in this game last season, when some on the Leeds bench goaded their opponents after Jack Harrison’s late leveller for Marcelo Bielsa’s side in the 1-1 draw.

Bielsa later took responsibility and apologised.

Harris doesn’t expect a repeat clash.

“I wouldn’t have thought so,” he said. “What we’ve seen is Leeds want to win at any cost. That’s what they do.

“We’re competitive people, we want to win, they want to win. At the end of the day I fully respect Marcelo and his career - but I want to win the game.”

Leeds arrive in south Bermondsey having lost away for the first time this season, 1-0 at Charlton last weekend.

Bielsa felt his was the dominant team.

“The difference between the two sides was big. We didn't impose our superiority and that was the reason for what happened,” Bielsa said.

“They had one shot and scored one goal. We had possession and controlled the game.

“Our players were better than their players. We didn't underestimate our opponents but we had more resources on the pitch."

Millwall would be happy if a frustrated Bielsa is repeating similar words on Saturday evening.

Den diary BOLTON eye up move for ex-Lion BOLTON WANDERERS have confirmed they want to sign former Millwall winger Ben Marshall.

Marshall, 28, had two loan spells with the Lions but had his contract terminated by Norwich in the summer, a year into a four-year deal.

Wanderers boss Keith Hill said: “We’re trying to encourage him to come into training with us. I have spoken to his representatives and we’d like the opportunity to have a look at him, and he can have a look at us.

“He is currently without a club and he’s a very good player.

THE FOOTBALL Association was investigating an “issue of discrimination” after last Saturday’s game between Leeds and Charlton.

JED WALLACE is a fan of VAR – but sees both sides of the argument.

MILLWALL ARE recruiting physiotherapists, sports therapists or sports rehabilitators to join their academy sports science and medicine department.

Reports claimed it involved Leeds goalkeeper Kiko Casilla and Addicks forward Jonathan Leko.

A newspaper report claimed the incident was reported to referee John Brooks. Any player found guilty of racial abuse could be banned for six games.

Charlton’s Macauley Bonne had indicated on Saturday that there was a problem. The FA received Brooks’ report on Monday.

Leeds found themselves in hot water last season after sending a ‘spy’ to watch Derby County’s training sessions before the sides’ clash. The Whites were fined £200,000.

Charlton beat Leeds 1-0.

Wallace feels Millwall could have benefitted from it had it been in use in the Championship this season..

“The more we take opinions out of football the worse it’s going to be. But if you imagine a Championship play-off final, you get a stonewall penalty and it isn’t given, that’s a £150million decision.

“I can see if from both sides.

Offside is good because it’s a fact. Now all of a sudden people are saying we need to be more lenient. So you’re going to bend a fact? You can’t change it.

“If we had VAR this season we might have seen a couple more decisions go our way.”

The successful candidates will work within a Category Two academy and fulfil the requirements according to the Elite Player Performance Plan system.

The club said: “The role of the academy therapist is fundamental to the longterm vision of Millwall Football Club.

NEIL HARRIS has ramped up the pressure on Leeds United by saying it will be a “failure” if Marcelo Bielsa’s side are not promoted this season.

The Whites missed out on promotion in 2018-19 despite spending 33 matchdays in the Championship’s top two.

Harris knows Leeds are likely to dominate possession at The Den on Saturday, but wants his side to be “ruthless” when they get scoring chances.

The Lions were on their way to victory in the corresponding fixture last season after Jed Wallace’s opener, before Jack Harrison scored with a minute left.

The Yorkshire side are odds-on to be promoted this campaign and are the title favourites. However they showed they are vulnerable when a less fancied team is organised and disciplined, as Charlton were in their 1-0 win over them at The Valley last Saturday.

That was Leeds’ first away defeat of the league season, as Macauley Bonne’s scrappy goal gave Millwall’s south London rivals the three points.

Millwall are aiming to get back to winning ways at The Den after a draw and a defeat, and could take a leaf out of Charlton’s book.

“The report I’ve had is that Leeds

dominated the game, Charlton got a chance and got a bit of luck with the ricochet for the goal,” Harris said.

“Leeds played against Swansea last month and they had 70 per cent possession [in a 1-0 home defeat].

We know they’re going to dominate the ball so you have to get your shape right.

“Leeds-Millwall is notorious for high-profile games, electric atmospheres at Elland Road and at The Den. It will be highly charged.

“Leeds are pushing for automatic promotion this year and anything other than that will be a failure for them.

“For us it’s a game that we can approach with an element of enjoyment. Wanting to win, of course, in a notorious rivalry. It’s a game that we play at this level for.

“We fight tooth and nail every year to be at this level because Leeds at a sold-out Den is a great occasion for the players, something to feed off and thrive off.

is hit our levels consistently. We have to make sure that we’re disciplined for 90 minutes, build pressure to make opportunities to score goals, and be effective and ruthless.”

Goalkeeper Bialkowski, 32, joined the Lions on a season-long loan from Ipswich Town in the summer.

However, there is no other agreement as part of the deal, and there is nothing stopping other clubs making cash offers to Paul Lambert’s League One Ipswich for the former Southampton stopper in January.

Bialkowski started the season as the Lions’ No.2 but has been firstchoice since Frank Fielding injured his quad on the opening day against Preston.

Millwall were close to agreeing a permanent £900,000 transfer with the Tractor Boys during the last window, but an issue with an old injury showed up in the medical.

The clubs then re-negotiated to come to the current arrangement.

Bialkowski has fitted in well at the club and is a popular member of the dressing room. He is contracted to Ipswich until 2021 meaning the club will demand a fee for him.

He knows that his current situation could change in January if his performances attract interest from other clubs.

“It could happen,” Bialkowski said, “but at the moment I just want to concentrate on playing the best I can here and see what happens.

“If Millwall decide they want to put in a bid for me then that would be brilliant.”
