SOUTHWARK THREE constituencies are among those most heavily backing a petition to revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU, according to an analysis.

The parliamentary petition, ‘Revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU’, had hit nearly six million signatures at the time of writing, an all-time record on the Parliamentary petitions site.

According to the anti-Brexit site, ‘Live From Brexit’, over 25,000 people had signed the petition from the Dulwich and West Norwood constituency.

The stat, over thirty per cent of the electorate, reportedly makes it the constituency with the twelfth greatest amount of signatures for the petition in the country.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency closely followed in thirteenth place, with 24,000 signatures, while over 21,000 residents in Camberwell and Peckham have also reportedly

added their voices to the petition.

But in a formal response to the petition on Tuesday, the Government categorically ruled out revoking Article 50 saying it would “undermine both our democracy and the trust that millions of voters have placed in Government.”

While acknowledging the “considerable number” that have signed, it added: “17.4 million people then voted to leave the European Union, providing the biggest democratic mandate for any course of action ever directed at UK Government.”

The news comes following a ‘People’s Vote’ march in the capital on Saturday, which independent experts have estimated was attended by around 312,000 to 400,000 people. Some reports had suggested up to one million people had attended.

Among the attendees were councillors from across the political divide in Southwark.

Just over 72 per cent of Southwark voters favoured ‘Remain’ in the 2016 referendum.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

A similar glass roof at Eltham Palace

THE OWNER of Peckham’s Khan’s Bargain store has been commended for his Rye Lane restoration project uncovering a hidden Art Deco roof fit for a palace.

Historic England says Akbar Khan’s 135 Rye Lane shop is of national architectural importance after its 1930s vaulted ceiling – similar to one adorning Greenwich's Eltham palace - was lovingly restored.

It took two local handymen, known as Tony and Pops, a year to complete the work with help from Akbar’s family and Peckham-based architect Benny O’Looney.

The building was originally designed by modernist architects TP Bennett and Sons in 1935 as an extension to what was then Holdron’s Department Store, a landmark in Peckham’s ‘Art Deco quarter’.

The distinctive roof was originally supplied by Lenscrete, and is made from precast concrete with a glass lenses.

Akbar first came to the UK from Afghanistan in 1999, where family had a retail business in Kabul.

After arriving in London with little spoken English and few qualifications, he started off trading on a Rye Lane market stall before opening Khan’s bargains a year later.

The store is now one of the largest in Rye Lane, and Akbar plays a prominent

role in Peckham’s business and heritage communities.

Akbar is both a member of both Peckham Vision, a community group dedicated to helping build a sustainable and thriving Peckham town centre, and the Rye Lane Traders’ Association.

He is now on a mission to help get more traders involved in preserving Peckham’s architectural heritage.

“I would encourage other shopkeepers to visit my shop and see that behind more recent coverings, there is often beautiful historic features to be discovered and restored,” he said.

“I hope the other traders on Rye Lane might try to make their own discoveries at their shops.

“My shop is now a much brighter and beautiful place to visit. This restoration work has helped my business and has been exciting to do.”

A certificate from Historic England states that awarded projects must made ‘an important contribution to local and national history’.

Akbar will formally receive his award on Friday, March 29 at a celebration held at 135 Rye Lane.

Afterward, Akbar and Benny’s next projects are to clean and help save the shop’s original glazed terracotta frontage, and see if the original signage can also be restored.

GOLDEN GOODBYES, the controversial parting payments made to outgoing Southwark Council cabinet members, will be curtailed after sustained criticism by opponents.

Since they were introduced in 2016, nearly £31,000 has been paid to cabinet members leaving their posts either after being sacked, reshuffled into another post, or simply because they have decided to stand down.

The scheme, introduced by Labour and vigorously opposed by the Liberal Democrat opposition, will now be curtailed to exclude those who voluntarily decide not to stand for re-election.

Although the move was welcomed by opposition leader Anood AlSamerai as a step in the right direction, she argued the payments should be completely scrapped.

Labour has defended the payments as a way to encourage diversity and

attract top talent to the full-time executive positions. In council papers published in advance of Wednesday’s council assembly, the changes were highlighted as a means to ‘capture the spirit and intent of the provisions’ – apparently conceding that payments to a cabinet member handing in their notice does not offset the time and financial implications of public service.

THE LIBERAL Democrat opposition is calling on Southwark Council to hold its own investigation into Nexus Group’s GP surgeries in Southwark after Care Quality Commission inspectors branded the service ‘inadequate’ and highlighted a series of safety concerns.

Councillors David Noakes, from Borough and Bankside ward, and Maria Linforth-Hall, representing St George’s, are lobbying the council to conduct its own investigation into the problems at the eight practices, now in special measures, and re-evaluate how funding for improving healthcare facilities across the borough is spent.

Although around £8.7 million will be ploughed by Southwark Council into new and improved buildings for doctors’ surgeries and other healthcare facilities, the Liberal Democrats say this will not resolve the problems at Nexus; attributed to poor internal systems and management since the previously

“The service I used to receive was fantastic, but it has gone downhill since the Nexus group took over.

“Southwark Council does need to investigate this and see what productive steps it can take to help turn the problems around.”

SEVEN POLICE dogs have been awarded ‘canine OBEs’ for their heroism during the 2017 terror attacks at London Bridge and Borough Market as well as Westminster.

Several of the hounds, from both the Met and British Transport Police, served on the night of the London Bridge terror attack on June 3 which claimed the lives of eight innocent civilians.

Now they will be given the PDSA Order of Merit, the animal equivalent of an OBE, in recognition of their heroic work, and will represent the nineteen dogs who served during the London Bridge and Westminster attacks.

One of the dogs who will receive the honour for her work was PD Kai, a spaniel who helps the Met uncover explosive devices.

Kai’s retired handler, PC Jean Pearce, said: “At London Bridge I was off-duty, I’d just got out of work when it came on the news so I just turned around and went back in.

“It was the early hours of the morning and she was going into buildings and clearing buildings for the armed officers, in case there’d been anything put down we didn’t know about.

“She’s got a very high drive, she wants to be here, she wants to work and she’s very intelligent.

“You put your life in the hands of a dog at the end of the day. I trust her completely.”

Police dogs including Kai searched over a dozen buildings over the site, some working tirelessly during a

“volatile” situation for over thirteen hours straight.

PD Bruno, who arrived on the scene later, was also involved in the clearance of the buildings, said his handler PC Rob Smith.

The white Labrador, who worked for British Transport Police, has since retired from the force and now lives with PC Smith in his family home. He also worked during the Westminster terror attack.

Other canines serving on the night searched the suspect’s suicide vests for explosives, while another was dispatched to clear a suspect vehicle under a nearby railway bridge in “horrendous conditions.”

The vehicle was later found to be explosive-free.

PDSA Director General, Jan McLoughlin paid tribute to the dogs saying their “devotion and service to

society was incredible, especially under such distressing circumstances.”

She said: “We will never forget those who lost their lives in these appalling attacks. Recognising the actions of these devoted dogs with our prestigious PDSA Order of Merit will be an honour.”

British Transport Police Inspector Paul Miles said he was “immensely proud” the force’s dogs, and “absolutely thrilled to see their bravery and resilience recognised.”

He added: “While today is a day of celebration, the horror of 2017 will never leave us, and our thoughts will always remain with those who lost their lives and were injured in these terrible incidents.”

Chief Inspector Graham Horwood from the Met’s Taskforce also said: “In 2017 we were sadly met with some unimaginable events and our thoughts

“Our Police Dogs and their handlers were required to work in the most challenging environments and we are delighted to hear that their extraordinary work has been recognised.

The awards from the PDSA, a veterinary charity, were first instituted in 1943 by its founder to raise the status of animals in society.

A SMALL group of Nunhead residents have started a petition to remove a TfL loo outside their home - dubbed a ‘Turdis’ after Doctor Who’s time-travelling machine.

The steel structure, which bears a resemblance to a Tardis, was installed on St Mary’s Road in December at the last stop for the number 78 bus. Around forty have been installed across London.

However, residents of the nearby Grade Two listed Sassoon House, which is directly next to the bus-driver loo, have said they weren’t properly consulted about its location, and want it moved.

Gülnaz Can, a St Mary’s Road resident who has started a petition against the loo told the News: “It’s directly outside my house. We didn’t like the idea from the beginning, [but] we thought it was going to be more discreet.

“They didn’t give us any evidence that they had exhausted all other locations.”

Ms Can also raised concern about liquid leaking from the ‘Turdis’ over the public footpath – but TfL has told the News that the liquid is clean water.

“My neighbours use the other side to get out as they don’t want their kids stepping in the liquid,” she said.

A letter which was sent to residents asking for their views after the toilet was installed was “making a mockery of the people who live there and not taking them seriously,” she added.

“They should not be providing the facilities at the expense of local residents and showing such a disrespect to local people.”

A HISTORIC Borough boozer changed its name for one day only on Friday in honour of Ed Sheeran to the ‘Shape of Brew’.

“We have attended the site to investigate the water issue and can reassure residents that it is clean water, spilt during regular maintenance work,” he said.

Mayor Sadiq Khan announced the toilets in February last year after pressure from drivers’ unions about a lack of toilet facilities. They are installed at the last stop of bus routes.

Another one of the loos, in Biggin Hill, Bromley, was removed after four weeks following a backlash by residents of the quiet suburban street.

The George Inn, on Borough High Street, took part in a stunt organised by Capital FM to name a pub after the famous singersongwriter after the star hit headlines for naming a pub in his wife’s honour.

A brass band, an Ed Sheeran tribute act and even a poodle in a pink mini were all to be found at the Sheeran-themed event.

Capital Breakfast’s Roman Kemp told listeners of the radio station on Friday: “Today’s the day we launch your pub – the pub you named, you created.

“It’s happening right now in London and it’s all – weirdly – in honour of Ed Sheeran.

OLD KENT ROAD DRUG DEALER JAILED AFTER KENT COPS CRACK DATA

AN OLD Kent Road drug dealer who supplied heroin and crack cocaine to people in Canterbury has been jailed.

Amir Khan, 23, pleaded guilty at Lewes Crown Court to two counts of conspiracy to supply class A drugs between October 23 and November 14 last year.

The dealer was jailed for six years and two months last week, following a Kent Police investigation into a county-line drug operation from Woolwich into Canterbury.

A ‘county-line’ is where a mobile number is used for marketing of drugs, often run by criminal gangs in London, but using runners to deliver to customers outside of the capital.

The court heard that telephone data revealed that Khan had been sending bulk messages to Kent drug users offering to sell them heroin and crack, regularly travelling into east Kent to deliver the drugs.

Police uncovered the operation when they searched a Ford Fiesta parked in Canterbury – only to discover 16 wraps of crack cocaine and 41 wraps of heroin in a metal tub.

Mobile phone data showed Khan had travelled to Ramsgate, also in Kent, to meet with the car’s owner, and that he was in Kent when the car was searched on October 24.

The 23-year-old was later arrested for his crimes on Woolwich’s Plumstead High Street in January.

The school’s head teacher, Teresa Neary, said graffiti was never an issue when they were based in Bermondsey’s Macks Road.

“It’s possible some people don’t realise we are a special school,” she told the News, “and this may make people think twice before they do it in the future.”

She said the special needs school would be left picking up an expensive bill to remove the spray paint, with some parts of the specially-designed building costly to repair due to its gold-coloured metalwork.

“It’s such a shame our beautiful building is being damaged in this way,” she added.

“We have an amazing building and the children love it.”

with 43 mopeds and a dedicated phone line to sell drugs across London.

The court heard the gang rented properties for short-term lets to use as safe houses, moving on every few days.

Members of the group were arrested between July and August last year.

Police stung Miguez after she was arrested leaving a self-storage unit in Ingate Place, Battersea which had more than £100,000 of drugs.

After searching at five different storage facilities in the capital, police found three

million pounds worth of drugs, including cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, GBL and cannabis. They found that between 2016 and 2018, the gang had sold drugs worth more than £2.5 million.

Detective Inspector Andy Durham said: “This investigation saw the largest ever seizure of GBL in the UK. I hope today’s conviction reassures communities that are listening and taking action. Please keep supplying us with information either about drug dealing, or about people you feel may be exploited by drug dealers.”

Killer Queen at Nunhead - school bucks the trend

PRACTICE REALLY did make perfect for students at St Thomas the Apostle School and Sixth Form College, who spent six months preparing for a spellbinding run of We Will Rock You.

The full-length musical, set to Queen’s greatest hits, is set in a dystopian future where all music is banned and follows lead characters Galileo and Scaramouche as they attempt to defeat arch-villain Killer Queen.

Sixty cast members, including a live band, put in at least six hours of rehearsals each week from the beginning of the school year under the direction of head of expressive arts Sam Parratt, head of music Joe Morgan, and head of drama Rubin Anderson.

Their hard work culminated in four successful shows in front 600 spectators throughout March, starring thirteen-year-old Milo Gray as Galileo, fifteen-year-old Timmi Adelagun as Scaramouche, and twelve-year-old David Natufe as Killer Queen.

Mr Parratt told the News the boys were particularly keen to choose We Will Rock You to coincide with the release of the Oscar-winning feature length Freddie Mercury biopic.

At a preview of their final show last Wednesday, he told the News the school’s focus on the arts is helping the boys to raise the bar and show the positive impact they have on their community.

“This is something we are really proud of - it is about raising their aspirations.

“Our standards of them are what you would expect of professionals and they are treated as they would be in the professional world. They’ve had to learn all the lines and learn the music.

“Since starting this project, I have really seen them grow, especially the younger ones. We are showing them another option in life they can take.”

Their work has already been praised by Mountview, the leading drama school based in Peckham, where some performers attend weekend sessions. Students from St Thomas the Apostle have also been scouted by the English National Opera.

Although funding for the arts is increasingly stretched nationally, St Thomas the Apostle is bucking the trend.

Mr Parratt describes student interest in the arts at the school as ‘huge and growing’, with more parents and kids hoping to attend the secondary in future because of its strong reputation and track record of nurturing talent.

THREE HUNDRED local residents have signed a petition against approved plans to turn a former Rotherhithe boozer into flats.

The petition calls for the scheme’s permission to be revoked, labelling it an “eyesore” which will “overhang the pavement” and “dominate the street scene.”

A plan had been previously approved for a different scheme on the site, which those signing the petition state would have mirrored nearby warehouses and was “designed to contribute to and not damage the local heritage.”

The revised scheme for the site, approved by officers in February will see six two bed flats being created alongside a ground floor retail space and basement parking.

The Clipper closed in 2014. Full details can be found of the scheme by searching ‘18/AP/3420’ on the Southwark Council planning register.

The petition can be found by searching the planning application reference on the change.org petitions website.

A FUNDRAISER to Guy’s and St Thomas’ has been set up by the family of a legendary rock guitarist known for his work with Ozzy Osborne.

Musician Bernie Tormé, who worked with the Prince of Darkness and rock band Gillan, passed away earlier this month just a day before his 67th birthday.

He had been rushed to St Thomas’ Hospital in February, where he was treated for virulent pneumonia three weeks prior to his death.

Now his family have launched a fundraiser for the Guy’s and St Thomas’ charity in recognition of the “great compassion” he received at the hospital.

A fundraising site set up in Mr Tormé’s name by family states: “This site is a tribute to Bernie, who was treated with great compassion at St Thomas' Hospital for over 3 weeks prior to his death on the 17th March 2019, one day short of his 67th birthday.

“We lost a wonderful husband, loving dad, and a caring human being.

“His music, compassion and kindness will live on in the people who knew him.”

The page has raised £800 for the two local hospitals so far.

Ozzy Osborne also paid tribute to the musician who enjoyed a lengthy recording career, whom he said had a “gentle soul with a heart of gold.”

A BID to expand the historic China Hall pub to include four flats has been submitted to the council.

Ian Gillan, the singer in rock band Deep Purple, has also paid his respects to Mr Tormé, who was a long-standing guitarist in the singer’s solo project, Gillan.

The plans would see the pub’s ground, first and roof levels expanded to create the residential units.

However, the site has special “asset of community value” status following a campaign by real ale group, CAMRA, which means the application would have to go through a formal planning meeting if the purpose of the building were changed.

A date for the application to be considered has not been set.

Former landlords Mick and Linda Norris had faced the prospect of being turfed out of their home at Christmas Eve, as the News has reported, when the lease was sold to the off-shore development firm, Hamna Wakaf Ltd. The couple, who had run the boozer for over thirty-five years, closed their doors in January after the developer reportedly offered them a lease that was double the amount they were previously paying.

The pair managed to negotiate a brief extension to the lease so as not be homeless over the festive period, and secured alternative accommodation on Camberwell’s Peabody Estate.

The News was not able to contact Hamna Wakaf for comment.

HOSPITAL TRUSTS TO MONITOR POLLUTION

AIR QUALITY monitoring units will be installed in Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, both of which are in areas breaking air quality targets.

The scheme, announced by Mayor Sadiq Khan on last Thursday, will see the monitors installed at ten hospitals in London’s most polluted areas.

Poor-quality air can already stunt lung growth and has been linked to increased rates of dementia, cancer and asthma.

Vulnerable hospital patients may be even more susceptible to the harmful effects of pollution.

The move comes after Great Ormond Street Hospital, the specialist children’s hospital, unveiled a clean air ‘framework’ to protect patients from pollution.

A spokesperson for the Guy’s and St Thomas’s Trust, the management body for the two hospitals, said the monitors would come in useful to inform patients about high pollution levels.

“As a cause of asthma and lung disease, air pollution is a real issue that

impacts our patients and local communities so we support the Mayor of London’s campaign to improve the capital’s air,” a spokesperson told the News.

“We’ll be able to use the real-time data from the air quality monitors to inform our patients, visitors and staff when pollution levels are high.”

Dr Penny Woods, Chief Executive of the British Lung Foundation, said air pollution was a “public health emergency” which was affecting children and the elderly.

“It can cause lung cancer, respiratory and heart disease and stunt the growth of children’s little lungs,” she warned.

“So it’s not right patients – especially children, the elderly and those with heart and lung problems – are exposed to dirty air that may make their symptoms worse when going to hospital.”

According to research by King’s

College London, Guy’s Hospital had annual nitrogen dioxide levels of 49ug/m3, above the 40ug/m3 target in 2017.

Last week, new backpacks were unveiled at the Charlotte Sharman primary school in Elephant and Castle which contained air quality monitoring units.

The novel approach aimed to collect data about pollution levels during a typical school day to better understand ways of combating the problem.

RUNNING IN HARVEY’S NAME

MILLWALL SUPER-FAN Harvey Brown, 10, has said he’s “really proud” of one of the club’s supporters who ran a half-marathon in his name on Sunday.

Steve Rendell, from Reading, ran the London Landmarks Half Marathon in Harvey’s name on Sunday for the MPS Society.

Harvey has the ultra-rare Morquio syndrome which affects skeletal growth, leaving sufferers with weak bones, a tendency to develop heart disease, and worsened vision and hearing.

Just 78 children in the UK have the condition. The little boy was at the finish line to cheer on Steve during the grueling feat.

Steve said: “It’s been overwhelming, I can’t explain it.

“The motivation for me, was Harvey being at the end. It meant a lot.

“I was thinking about him every mile. It meant so much to me, very emotional.”

The half-marathon has raised £6,300 for the MPS Society, which supports those affected by a body of diseases of which Morquio is one.

Speaking prior to the race, Harvey’s doting dad, Dean, said the family was hugely thankful to Steve.

“What Steve is doing means a lot to us as a family,” he said.

“Harvey has such a rare disorder and the MPS Society is such a small charity that we need support like this to help Harvey and others like him.

“We have had huge support from Millwall Football Club and we must thank them hugely for helping Harvey and without them Steve wouldn’t have heard about Harvey.”

Around 13,000 runners also took part in the event, raising an estimated £6million for charity.

MP APPEALS TO KING’S NOT TO ‘CUT’ 24 MIDWIFE POSTS IN SHAKE-UP

TWENTY-FOUR MIDWIFE posts are threatened by a proposed restructure of King’s College Hospital’s maternity services, but despite repeated requests from the News and an intervention from Harriet Harman MP, the possible impact on expectant mothers remains unclear.

King’s College NHS Trust has confirmed it has consulted on restructuring its midwifery service at Denmark Hill but denies claims the shake-up would lead to an overall reduction in staff.

The trust also claims the plans are nothing to do with the spiralling deficit responsible for it being placed in financial special measures by the Care Quality Commission.

But over a three-week period, with six inquiries made by the News, the trust has repeatedly failed to explain how the restructure would potentially affect current staffing levels and job roles, care for new mothers and their babies, and whether or not it would lead to less choice around how and where women give birth.

THE TESCO Metro inside the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre has closed temporarily while the company urgently deals with pests.

The shop had been closed over the weekend and beginning of this week while store bosses deal with a pest control issue, believed to be mice.

The company told the News that it closed the store as soon as it realised it had an issue and began to take urgent action, calling in a specialist pest control expert.

Campaign group Latin Elephant says traders had been 'misled' by Delancey and Southwark Council, claiming they had previously been assured there was enough space on offer for all small independent traders to be relocated.

Patria Román Velázquez, Latin Elephant's director, said: “We objected to the lack of floorspace available for relocation for years, but the Council and Delancey insisted that there was enough space to accommodate at least 80 traders. Now we see the picture that is emerging is bleak”.

The group is continuing to fundraise to take Delancey to court in a bid to halt the entire regeneration scheme.

Alongside 35% campaign and other 'Up the Elephant' activists, the crowdfunding appeal has now raised more than £6,000 towards its £10,000 target with – at the time of going to press - just a week to go.

The report, published on March 11 by the House of Commons’ housing, communities and local government committee, argues commonhold should become the primary model of ownership for future builds; calls for leasehold misselling to be investigated; pushes for existing ground rents to be limited to 0.1 per cent of present value up to a maximum of £250 per year; new ground rents set at a peppercorn; and says service charges should be itemised for greater transparency.

Its authors explained: “Too often leaseholders – particularly in new-build properties – have been treated by developers, freeholders and managing agents, not as homeowners or customers, but as a steady source of profit.”

Although it fell short of proposing an outright ban on leasehold, key recommendations include new legislation is brought in to make sure freeholders cannot recoup legal costs from tribunals they have lost through service charge bills, and introducing low-interest loans to help leaseholders struggling to finance purchasing the

freehold or extend their lease.

The report comes after shocking cases have come to light where homeowners have been effectively trapped in unsellable homes with escalating ground rents.

The issue has highlighted wider problems within the sector including high service charges, difficulty challenging freeholders in court, and expensive lease extensions.

In 2017, Savid Javid described the practices as ‘practically feudal’ during his tenure as secretary of state for housing.

One leaseholder from Sydenham, who submitted evidence to the committee, described the report as ‘damning’ and said she was supporting a petition to abolish leasehold ownership altogether – along with 22,000 other signatories.

In her block, from 2013 to 2017 major works costing £79,000 spiralled to £600,000 leaving leaseholders with bills of around £50,000 each despite challenges over discrepancies made by the homeowners.

In total, the owner of the two-bed flat was forced to pay £41,800 for the major works and, after a failed attempt at litigation, a further £8,000 covering the landlord’s legal fees.

“Our legal advice was that it would cost more to challenge in court than to pay,” she said. “This should not be the only choices available to leaseholder consumers.”

EASEHOLD HOME ownership has been described by both the Tories and Labour as ‘feudal’, but despite a general consensus that the model is at best undesirable, onerous and expensive, and at worst financially ruinous, wholesale reform has been slow to

Its origins may be in a medieval tithing system, but leasehold only really took off with the post-war social housing boom when slum housing made way for new high-rise flats and large estates and, in the decades to come, swanky new-build flats.

Home ownership may be the end goal for many stuck with dodgy landlords and extortionate private rents, but the leasehold scandal shows how buying your dream home can bring problems even worse.

In the 1960s, public outrage that elderly leaseholders were being evicted form their homes when their leases expired led to a reform act allowing them to buy out their freeholders. In the late ‘80s that was extended to ensure freeholders had to give their leaseholders first refusal if they were selling up.

Commonhold - a system when individual flat owners are freeholders - was created in 2002. Take-up has been limited and stories of spiralling ground rents, extortionate service charges for sums that appear to bear no relation to the work carried out, and the difficulty launching a legal challenge to dispute costs, have blighted homeowners across the country – including those on council-owned estates.

Many of the reforms in the report prepared by, among others, MP Helen Hayes, are not particularly new or radical ideas. They believe if ground rents can be capped and incentives are brought in, commonhold will gradually become the norm, as it is in many other countries.

For people whose finances and futures have been ruined by buying a home they can’t afford but can’t sell, the question is whether reform is a fudge – and what is really needed, is an outright ban.

THE DOGS’ ‘GAME’ IS VITAL, LIFE-SAVING WORK

O POLICE dogs, uncovering an explosive is a bit like a game. They think they’re essentially chasing a tennis ball, handlers told the News when we visited several of them this week.

Seven police hounds have been awarded PDSA Order of Merits – an animal OBE – for their bravery responding to terror attacks like at London Bridge. Their work must surely save lives, we asked one handler, whose dog has been awarded the honour for her role responding to the London Bridge atrocity.

Undoubtedly so, she replied – without her spaniel’s keen nose, our emergency services would find it much harder to work volatile scenes such as the aftermath of that attack. The dogs may see it as a game.

But the ‘game’ is vital, life-saving work, with heroic police dogs and their handlers placing themselves in harmful situations for all of our sakes.

The medals for the canine heroes, instituted by the veterinary charity PDSA to raise the status of animals, are thoroughly well-deserved.

THE CHARTER School North Dulwich is raising funds to install new water fountains as part of a drive to entirely cut out single-use plastic within two years – and save students nearly £200 a year wasted on bottled water.

The co-ed state school says its handful

of water stations are currently in a poor condition and, as a result, 600 plastic water bottles are bought by its students every single day – more than 100,000 a year – by pupils put off by the metallic taste caused by rusty pipework.

The school has committed to ditching single-use plastic by 2021; with mostly compostable food packaging now used in its school dinners.

Replacing the water fountains will

cost £27,000, so the school has set up a crowdfunder to help fund the project.

Fountains will save pupils up to £190 a year currently wasted on bottled water; amounting to well over a thousand pounds during their seven years at the secondary school by those buying a bottle a day.

Head teacher Christian Hicks said: "As a school we are constantly looking at ways to reduce our environmental

impact and this is something which is important to both staff and students.

“We are also keen to do everything that we can to help our pupils stay hydrated, as this has been proven to improve concentration and mental performance, as well as being essential for students’ overall health.”

Twenty-nine-year-old Anthony Adade, from Hayles Street, was found guilty of two counts of computer misuse and four counts of fraud by abuse of position and sentenced today (Tuesday, March 26) to three years behind bars.

The NatWest in Marylebone branch employee was found to have and 'accessed several customer accounts, making fraudulent transfers worth over £200,000 between November 13, 2015, and April 30, 2016'. All victims have been fully refunded.

He was caught out by internal investigators, who drafted in the Dedicated Card and Payment Crime Unit, a specialist police unit which is believed to have saved £600 million since it was formed in 2002 by 'preventing and disrupting fraud'.

ATHY DONOVAN was born in St Olave’s Hospital, Rotherhithe in 1932, the eldest of five sisters and two brothers. Her parents, Bridget and Jim, had just moved into a one-bedroom flat on the brand new Millpond Estate, Bermondsey, writes Michael Holland…

“They were better than the older blocks of flats in Rotherhithe and Bermondsey ‘cos they had inside toilets and a proper bathroom. None of that sitting in a tin bath in front of the fire like you hear old people talking about,” says the 86-year-old. “But we only had hot water in the winter when the fire was going; in the summer my mum had to heat up a copper and then get buckets of hot water out to pour in the bath, which meant only the first one in got the clean, hot water.”

As more and more siblings came along (Peter and Jean died while very young) the family continually moved into bigger flats in the same block on Bermondsey Wall East, eventually stopping at No. 20: a three-bedroom flat on the top floor. But with seven in the house, it was still crowded. “I suppose it was hard back then, but because I was the oldest I never had to wear hand-me-downs like my sisters.”

Life, though, through children’s eyes is far rosier than an adult’s. “Where we lived felt like the posh part of Rotherhithe with the new flats, the river on one side and Southwark Park on the other, where I played a lot,” she recalls. “You had to have a grown up with you to go in the Rose Garden back then, so it was exciting to go in there without getting caught by the Parkie; we used to run through from one side to the other as a dare!”

Her maternal grandparents were immigrants: Albert from France and Mary from Ireland. Her father was a stevedore in Surrey Docks all his life, while her mother did a variety of jobs. “During the war she worked at Lloyds: the tin factory at Dockhead, but when my brothers and sisters came along she had to do part-time work, so did early morning office cleaning.” Kathleen remembers her mum leaving at 4am and then coming home to get them all up and ready for school.

Young Kathy’s first school - and all the little Donovans - was St Joseph’s in Paradise Street (now in Gomm Road). “I remember one teacher - a Miss Donovan, coincidentally - who used to punch you in the back if you weren’t moving quick enough for her!”

At the outbreak of war the whole school was evacuated to a Catholic school in Burgess Hill. “After the Blitz all the kids came back to Bermondsey for a while, but then the doodlebugs started so me and my brother Jimmy were evacuated to Scotland. It wasn’t nice being evacuated alone, as I was not treated very good by the people who took us in. It was better when we all went together, with my brother Jimboy and my Mum.” Being a Catholic was evidently quite exciting in those days. “Catholics had the Procession; Protestants didn’t have a procession in their schools.” For the annual Procession, the schoolchildren used to march around the Rotherhithe streets carrying a statue of Our Mary.

“The Catholic houses used to put little altars in their windows, and candles, and the priest would bless the house with holy water as the Procession went past.”

Kathy then changed to Notre Dame School at the Elephant. “I got there on a scholarship after passing the Eleven Plus.

I was the first person to get one at St Joseph’s,” she remembers with pride.

“The best thing, though, was not getting any more punches in the back from Miss Donovan ‘cos she thought it was all down to her that I got the scholarship, but it was

because I was clever!” Kathy got to her secondary school on a tram but what she remembers most about trams was when they were being taken out of service. “On the day the last 68 tram came along Jamaica Road hundreds of people came out to see it off, and everyone put a penny down in the tramlines to get it squashed flat or bent by the tram as it took its final journey, to keep as a souvenir.”

The end of rationing was also a day that stuck in the mind of the woman who went through the Blitz and separation from her family. She says, “I think most people, especially children, remember the day sweets came off rationing, because every local sweet shop completely sold out.

Imagine a shop that sold nothing else but sweets but with just empty jars on its shelves!”

School ended at 15, when she started a job in Bermondsey Street. Her wage was £2 10s 0d (£2.50) and she gave her mum £1 10 0d (£1.50). “The best thing about it was the smell of the fresh bread from the bakery next door,” she says with a nostalgic look on her face.

Kathleen’s teenage years were then spent

dancing. “I was often up the Harp Club in New Cross, and then rushing home on the tube to Rotherhithe so I wouldn’t get a wallop off me dad… I met my first husband, Butchie Burkett, at a dance at English Martyrs church hall in Walworth so we always went dancing. We also went dancing around the bandstand in Southwark Park when they had a band there. “I’m dancing in Mary Gosling’s painting of the bandstand, which my son bought for me.” It hangs on her living room wall.

Southwark Park was also where Kathy’s mum used to work as a park-keeper. “My mum and most of her sisters were Parkies and she loved it; she’d look after all her grandchildren there in the school holidays.”

Kathy came of age in the ‘50s. “When I got married we lived with my mum for a while but then got a place in Park Buildings but that marriage didn’t last and I met my second husband, Tommy Holland, who fought at Pegasus Bridge with the Red Berets in the D Day landings, in the Two Brewers.” Tommy, sadly, died from cancer within two years.

Hop picking was the family holiday for most Bermondsey people, and the Donovans were no exception. The aunts, cousins and neighbours were also on Day’s Farm with them, just outside of Yalding, so it was a lot of fun. “Three of my sisters were born round about the same time,” begins Kathy. “Bridget, May 20th; Wendy, May 31st, and Janet on June 1st. We called them “Hopping Babies” because my mum always came back pregnant from hopping in September!”

As the austerity of the war years receded and the ‘60s arrived, there seemed to be more money about. Family holidays meant going to Pontins or a caravan somewhere, and eventually, when cheap

flights became available, to Spain.

“But you never forget the hopping days,” she says wistfully.

Kathleen’s mum, Bridget, lived all her life within half a mile of Ainstey Street where she was born, until she passed away, aged 87, at Ronald Buckingham Court, sheltered housing for the elderly behind the Adam and Eve in Brunel Road.

In 1958, Kathy and her two sons move to the newly-built Silwood Estate, then to Osprey Estate when that opened in 1970.

These days she lives in an apartment block for over-55s in Sidcup and between cruises she keeps herself busy at a weekly exercise session, bingo and lunching with friends, neighbours and family.

THE RYE were due to play Seven Acre Sports last weekend but due to inadequate numbers their opponents conceded the game.

Instead, the Rye hosted AFC Kingfisher in a friendly, and both sides used the opportunity to give fringe players and those returning from injury some much-needed match action.

Despite there being nothing on the line in terms of points, it was a competitive encounter and both sides created a number of early chances.

Kam Mitchell almost converted for the hosts after a goalmouth scramble but Kingfisher escaped.

Neil Williams was next to go close but couldn’t force the ball home, before Craig Parsons, making his return from injury, gave his side the lead when he slotted in from a tight angle.

A raft of substitutes came on for both teams at the break, with Micheal Cathrew making his Rye debut in central midfield.

Kingfisher pressed for an equaliser but a Peckham counter led to Keenan Rochester being fouled in the box, and he dusted himself down to give his side a 2-0 lead from the penalty spot.

The Rye then brought on Duke Binitie who latched onto a Charlie Eldridge pass to score at the near post and seal a comprehensive 3-0 win for his side.

DULWICH HAMLET continue to live dangerously with just six games left this season as last Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Oxford City left them four points above the relegation zone.

Gavin Rose’s side had been buoyed by two wins in the previous three games, but inconsistency has been their problem in this campaign and this defeat against a side with little left to play for hurt them.

The home side were 4-0 up by the break, and Dipo Akinyemi’s last-minute goal did little to lift the mood.

Akinyemi’s fourth-minute strike that flashed wide was not a sign of things to come, as Hamlet were well beaten by City.

Michael Chambers felt he should have been given a penalty when his shirt was pulled in the box, but the referee somehow didn’t feel the same.

Moments later Dulwich goalkeeper Preston Edwards was forced into action as he saved for a corner before Brandon Thomas-Asante headed wide.

Edwards saved from Thomas-Asante ten minutes in and then Hamlet had a chance to go ahead when Akinyemi found Nyren Clunis whose shot went wide of the far post.

A minute later, the hosts went ahead, this time Thomas-Asante finding his range to beat Edwards.

Clunis had a chance to almost immediately restore parity but couldn’t find the target, and Hamlet fell two goals behind when Kabongo Tshimanga found Kyran Wiltshire for a smart finish.

It got even worse for Hamlet just 25 minutes in. Aryan Tajbakhsh was adjudged to have fouled Jack Self, and Tshimanga fired home from twelve yards.

Certainly a sense of injustice for Hamlet after the earlier incident involving Chambers.

And if they visitors thought it couldn’t possibly get any worse they were relieved of that feeling four minutes before halftime.

Just after Clunis had another chance to pull one back from Jamie Mascoll’s cross, City were awarded another penalty and it was a controversial call. The assistant referee thought that Mascoll, despite having his arms by his side and making no move towards the ball, had deliberately handled, and Tshimanga beat Edwards again. It was the fourth penalty Hamlet had given away in three games.

Hamlet never looked like they would claw back an insurmountable deficit.

Edwards made two relatively comfortable saves, and in the 90th minute Akinyemi scored the goal of the game with a chip from outside the box. It should have been worthy of more, but instead Hamlet are looking nervously behind them.

Rose’s side host seventh-place Billericay Town this Saturday, kick-off is 3pm at Champion Hill.

FISHER REFUSE to relent in their bid for what would be an extraordinary second successive promotion after their 1-0 win at Tunbridge Wells las weekend.

Mathieu Ramsamy scored the only goal of the game, as Dean Harrison’s side made it two wins from two since their controversial Challenge Cup defeat to Corinthian, who they now trail by just one point at the top of the SCEFL Premier Division table.

Meanwhile, the Football Association will introduce sin bins in the SCEFL from next season.

It was originally planned to introduce sin bins from Step 5 and below for the 2020-21 season, but that has been brought forward following its success from Step 7 and below.

It is an attempt to reduce instances of dissent, with the punishment of ten minutes off the field only applied to that infringement.

Sin bins were first introduced at grassroots level from 2017-18.

The plan is then likely to include introducing sin bins at National League and Isthmian League levels in the coming seasons.

The event saw the culmination of twelve weeks of training as the schools put their new skills to the test with a round-robin series of matches.

The talent on display was eyecatching with fleet of foot and agility being shown in abundance. However, it was the overall teamwork shown by St

Thomas the Apostle which saw them acknowledged as the best team on the day.

Community coach Andrea Nalio said: “More than 50 players attended with everyone showing great skill, energy and enthusiasm, all of which added to a great afternoon.

“Communication and teamwork improved as the afternoon progressed

with St Thomas the Apostle winning both their games with some excellent rugby.”

SRFC chairman Chris Callaway added: “Rugby as a sport doesn’t really penetrate into inner-London. A lack of clubs and adequate space means a huge amount of talent goes untapped.

PECKHAM TOWN rung the changes after failing to beat Borden Village the previous week and were rewarded with a win over bottom side Stansfeld in the Kent County Premier Division.

The starting XI showed six changes and the side got the victory to put their promotion bid back on track.

Peckham started the game on the front foot and created a number of early chances before the deadlock was broken midway through the half when Nicky Meta cut in from the left and hit a curling cross-cum-shot into the top corner to open the scoring for the hosts.

A young Stansfeld young side acquitted themselves well for the remainder of the half, and frustrated Peckham’s efforts to extend their lead.

Peckham made more changes at halftime, brining on experienced midfield duo Ali Amisu and Lukman Mojeed.

Larry McArdle also replaced Tommy Hobson in goal.

Peckham continued to look for a second goal, but Stansfeld’s high pressing game was frustrating their attempts to move the ball forward.

Town finally extended their lead with just over 20 minutes left when Benson Aderibigbe dribbled in from the left wing and fired home to seal the win.

Mary Phillip, Town’s head coach, said: “We had a much-changed side this weekend. The lads stepped up to the challenge and did themselves proud.”

The Menace play their last home game league game on Saturday,

March 30, when they take on Bexley at 2.45pm. The three remaining fixtures are all away from home.

NEIL HARRIS believes Birmingham could be in the relegation dogfight – as he blasted the decision to dock them nine points “the weak way out”.

Blues suffered the sanction from the English Football League for breaching profitability and sustainability rules.

The deduction drops them from thirteenth to eighteenth in the Championship, just four points above Millwall.

Between 2015 and 2018, Blues accumulated £10million more in losses than the allowable limit. Birmingham can appeal the decision of the Independent Disciplinary Commission.

Harris stressed it isn’t the fault of current Birmingham boss Garry Monk.

Under the previous two managers, Gianfranco Zola and Harry Redknapp, Blues splashed out over £30million on new players.

“I think the next ten days is going to be crucial for Birmingham, how they respond,” Harris said.

“First and foremost what they have been able to get away with and other clubs get away with is a disgrace in the modern game. Rules and regulations are in place to stop these things.

“It’s certainly not aimed at Garry and his players, because they’ve had a great season so far, and it’s a real shame for them, but as a club they’ve got away with murder.

“Nine points, for me, is not enough of a deterrent to stop clubs gambling with their future. That’s what they’re doing.

“Managers, chairmen, players are custodians of football clubs, you’re there to look after football clubs – but they belong to the fans. Any clubs going out spending willy-

nilly are putting themselves in danger.

“Nine points for Birmingham is a soft approach, it doesn’t put them right in relegation trouble, but it could do if they don’t pick up.

“It’s a safe bet from the commission and the Football League and it’s a weak way out.

“If Birmingham don’t win the next couple of games then they could get clawed back by the teams below. It’s another target for us, to try to close the gap on them over the next couple of games, and an opportunity for us to try and finish above them.”

Meanwhile, Harris insisted ‘Spygate’, the controversy over this

weekend’s opponents Leeds sending staff members to watch training sessions, would have no bearing on this weekend’s clash.

Leeds were fined £200,000 after their manager Marcelo Bielso admitted to sending spies to report back from opposition training sessions.

“That’s long gone, it’s been well publicised. I was clear at the time I didn’t think it was right but it’s in the past,” Harris said.

“I think you’ll have 40,000 Leeds fans turning up expecting their side to win. They’ve had a terrific season and I really enjoy watching them play, they play with real tempo and

energy.

“They’ve got some good players and it’s going to be a real theatre of football at the weekend.

“We go with the knowledge that we’ve out-performed Brighton at home recently, Birmingham away, Derby away, Middlesbrough away and performed very well at Swansea.

“We can go and win at places like this. We showed it last year, they’ll know we went and won there.

“If they want to get promoted they have to beat teams like us. We’re certainly massive underdogs in this game but it’s an opportunity for us to upset the form book.”

Lions happy to meet Ransom demands

MILLWALL ARE signing a player with a “fine reputation” in the nonleague after a deal was confirmed Eastbourne Borough’s Harry Ransom.

Ransom is primarily a centre-back but has played in midfield and attack, and will spend the remainder of the season at the National League South side – who are managed by Neil Harris’ former boss Mark McGhee – before linking up with the Lions on a permanent deal in the summer.

Ransom, who came through the youth system at Brighton and is Eastbourne’s youngest-ever captain, has been training with Millwall.

“Harry has a fine reputation at nonleague for a nineteen-year-old centre-half that’s played a lot of games,” Lions boss Harris said.

“Looking at, in our opinion, deficiencies between under-23s football and first-team football, the gulf there has got even further away.

“We’re trying to bridge that gap, by sending our players out on loan to play men’s football, and recruiting some young players from non-league to give them the opportunity because they physically can step up is important for us.

“Harry is one we’ve scouted for a while.

He’s been in training with us and we want to work with him in the future.

“He stays at Eastbourne Borough until the end of the season where he tries to help get them as many points as possible, learning under a very good manager and experienced coach in Mark McGhee, somebody I know well.

“Then there’s a deal in principle for Harry to come in and work with us next season.”

Leonard: ‘I think we’ll get the results we need’

RYAN LEONARD has happy memories of playing against Leeds – and insists the Lions go to Elland Road with “confidence” this Saturday.

Despite there being 36 points between the clubs in the Championship table, the Lions are buoyed by their win at Birmingham and performance in the FA Cup quarter-final loss to Brighton, and by memories of their 4-3 win at Elland Road last season.

Leonard says Leeds are “flying” as they seek promotion back to the top flight for the first time in fifteen years.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are a point off second-placed Sheffield United, who they lost 1-0 to before the international break.

Millwall defeated Birmingham 20 in their last league game, their first win in five fixtures which keeps them a point above the relegation zone.

Leonard has been impressed with what he has seen from Bielsa’s men this campaign.

“Quite a few of their games have been televised so I’ve see them a lot,” Leonard said. “My debut for Millwall was against Leeds and it’s going to be a good occasion.

“They’re flying at the moment and their confidence will be really high.

But we’ve just had a great result on the road and we can go there with a bit more confidence than what we previously had.

“We have to go there and give it a right go and that’s what we’re going to do. Hopefully that’ll be enough to get something out of the game.

“They’ve got some really good players, they are where they are in the Championship for a reason.

They’ve got one of the best teams in the division.

“Individually we’ve got to keep their players quiet and we’ll go into training before the game analysing their performances to try to negate them and get something.”

As Millwall are in action at Elland Road, several of their relegation rivals will be scrapping for points in their fixtures.

Leonard said Millwall’s players would be getting up to date immediately after the final whistle this weekend.

“It’s impossible not to,” he admitted, “it’s a case of everyone associated with Millwall being straight on to check results. I don’t

think we’re going to get away from that.

“If teams lose maybe it gives you an extra bit of a boost but we know it’s in our own hands. We’re a point clear at the moment with nine games to go. We know in our changing room we’ve got enough to stay in this division so we just need to perform and show it.

“I think we need that belief, we’ve shown it in games this season that we can score goals, keep clean sheets, be solid but create chances.

“It’s important to get consistency between the latter two. We don’t want to play too defensive and bring people on to us, we have to get the balance right.

“We’ll be working on that in training, along with just enjoying it, to be honest. We’ve got nine games to go so we might as well go out and enjoy it and do the best we can.

“I think we’ll pick up the results we need.”

Midfielder confident Lions will beat the drop EXCLUSIVE

MILLWALL’S JED Wallace is targeting four more wins for Championship survival – and he thinks the Lions’ daunting run of fixtures could actually be a positive.

Four victories from their remaining nine games would leave Millwall on 49 points, enough to stay up in eight of the last ten Championship seasons.

The two teams directly below the Lions in the table, Reading and Rotherham, have won just eight and seven games, respectively, all season.

Millwall face promotion contenders Aston Villa and Sheffield United away, and before that, this Saturday, Leeds United at Elland Road. Wallace feels it’s more beneficial playing sides with something to lose towards the end of the season.

Wallace scored a dramatic injury-time goal for a 4-3 win in Yorkshire last season, and believes his display in the 10 victory over Leeds at home in 2017-18 was his best ever in a Millwall shirt.

After Leeds, Millwall face another playoff candidate, West Brom, at The Den, and Wallace wants the fans to create a similar atmosphere to the one for the FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton.

“When The Den gets going like that there’s nowhere better,” Wallace said. “I loved it against Brighton, it was a great game. Those big occasions at home are what we want, we had loads of them last season, almost every league game was like that.

“That’s what we want to create again, we want to get that atmosphere back.

We’ve got a few games we need to win at home, and hopefully we can pick up points away.

“There are no excuses now, we’ve got nine games left and need to get going. We need three or four victories and no better place than Elland Road to try and do that.

“I’ve played Leeds three times and played well against them every time. Last season’s home game was probably the best performance I’ve had for Millwall.

“I scored against them this season and last season. I relish those big games: Middlesbrough, Norwich, Leeds.

They’re the games I want to play in and the ones I play well in so hopefully this weekend will be the same.

“Last season was mad. When they scored their third goal, that was noise.

Jesus, it was loud. It’s a great place to play football, there’s a lot of rivalry between the clubs but also a lot of respect. It’s two passionate fan bases.

“It’s one of those games playing for Millwall that you just roll your sleeves up and can’t wait to be involved in.

“The international break has come at the wrong time, really. It was after the Brighton game which was a good performance from us and I can’t wait to play at Elland Road now. As a Millwall player it doesn’t get much better.

“I always think at this stage of the season you want to be playing teams that have something to play for. Playing four of the top six away is good because as you saw against Derby when we sit in with the formation we played we were difficult to beat and we hit them on the counter-attack.

“The last thing you want at this time of the season is to be playing someone like Preston, who have loads and loads of good players and have the shackles off.

They’re chasing something but they’ve got no pressure on them, similar to us last year.

“The worst team you could play in February or March of last year was us because we were on a roll with nothing to lose. Playing against teams with a lot to play for will suit us.

“We have to find three of four wins and, if we don’t, then what happens to us is our own fault.”

if they were relegated.

But he believes they have enough quality and experience to stay up.

“I want to be playing Championship football. I signed a much-improved longterm contract this season and that’s with a view to playing Championship football,” Wallace continued.

“I’ve played League One. The flip side of it is that there are plenty of better players than me and bigger clubs than Millwall that have played there, so I’m not going to sit around crying whatever happens. I’ll do what I do which is roll my sleeves up.

“It’s in our own hands. We’ve got nine games and at this football club you need big character. The last nine games we need some big performances and with people like Thommo [Ben Thompson] coming into the group doing what they are doing takes the pressure off the other lads.

“In situations like this you just need to worry about yourselves and your own performances and see where it gets you.

“We are where we are for a reason, we’ve had a lot of sticky patches and at any level if you lose three or four games in a row you’re going to come unstuck, which has happened to us this year.

“It’s the same if you win back-to-back games, it helps. And obviously we go to Leeds with that opportunity. I think we’ll be alright, we’ve got a lot of good players. There are a lot of teams in and around us that would give their left arm to have three or four of our players, I do believe that.

“It’s now that our big players need to turn up at the right moments – and hopefully I’ll be one of them.”

JED WALLACE revealed what quickly helped him get over losing to Brighton in the FA Cup quarterfinal – the thought of facing Manchester City in the last four.

Minutes after their 5-4 penaltyshootout loss to Brighton, the Seagulls were drawn against City, who have scored five goals or more in ten games this season.

Wallace said he was “upset” after the

last-eight loss, but admitted it was best to avoid potential “embarrassment” against a Sky Blues side chasing the quadruple this season.

“As soon as I saw we would have been playing Man City it kind of took the edge off it,” Wallace said.

“I would have been a lore more gutted had we been playing one of the other two teams because, with Watford or Wolves, one or two times out of ten you catch them on a bad day.

“Man City beat Schalke 7-0 [in the second leg of their last-sixteen Champions League tie]. Yeah it could

have been great, but it could also have been embarrassing.

“I was upset for the fans, and for myself because to walk out at Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final would have been great, but it wasn’t meant to happen.

“It was a great performance and the fans recognised that, we got applauded off after conceding in the last minute.

Fair play to the fans, everyone was behind us but it was just disappointing.”

Martin palmed in Solly March’s mis-hit free-kick.

Wallace added: “I was more gutted for Dave than anyone, because it means so much to him. He’s a proper, proper professional. The way Fergie [Shane Ferguson] conducted himself and got back in was good, but the way Dave has been I’ve not seen anything like it.

“The way he’s conducted himself over the last twelve months, he’s not put a foot wrong. His professionalism is right up there in the top of the list with players I’ve played with. The boys were gutted because they see it every

day in training, his attitude is ridiculous. He’s a great, great guy.

“He’s an experienced player, a leader in the dressing room and he’ll bounce back. Now we need him to show his mental strength, which we know he’s got.

“It’s difficult for a goalkeeper. If a centre-forward misses a chances he gets another one. A goalkeeper gets punished for a mistake.

“Apart from it he was flawless, his handling was unbelievable. He’s a good goalie. He’s had bad games before but plenty of good ones. He’ll be fine.”

JED WALLACE and his partner are due their second child on the last weekend of the season – but the winger revealed they have already had the conversation about where he will be if it’s that Sunday.

Millwall face Wigan Athletic on May 5, when both clubs could still be battling for Championship survival.

Wallace’s partner, Abbie, is over 33 weeks pregnant, as they plan for the second addition to their young family after Luca, who is thirteen months old.

Wallace – who turned 25 last Tuesday and celebrated with the current Millwall tradition of bringing cakes to the training ground – was present for the birth of Luca, but explained why Abbie accepts that he may be away for the second arrival.

“She’s due right around the Wigan game so that could be a big weekend all-round,” Wallace said. “I wouldn’t miss the game. Abbie grew up around a football family so she knows.

“We had Luca on the Thursday before Burton last season so I missed training that day but – and this is where the manager is good – I came up by train for training on the

Friday.

“You’ve got to be there for the first one, but I’ve already had the chat with her that if it’s necessary then I’ll play.

“I brought in cakes again for my birthday, another 40 quid down the pan. I’ve got another kid coming and I’ve got to spend 40 quid on donuts.

People don’t see the things in football you’ve got to do!”

Meanwhile, Wallace has paid tribute to the job Marcelo Bielsa has done at this Saturday’s opponents, Leeds United.

Leeds lost 1-0 at home to Sheffield United in their last league outing, and Wallace said his side would take inspiration from the Blades.

Wallace added: “It’s good to see a foreign manager coming in and sticking with the English players, with a little sprinkling of the likes of [Pablo] Hernandez and such that have been outstanding.

“He’s done well and the group of players have improved so much. I love football and like to think I’m a student of football and it’s refreshing to see, as it is with Norwich, rather than teams going out and spending £50-60million on players.

“It’s good to see them improving players, changing formations and adapting different styles.

“They had a difficult result last time out against Sheffield United.

United did exactly the same as what we’ll look to do, sit in and hit them on the counter-attack. We want to do the same.”

MILLWALL FACE a daunting trip to Leeds on Saturday but Lions boss Neil Harris stressed: “We’re going there to win.”

Harris said Lions players have been in “vibrant” mood in training over the international break after their league win at Birmingham and then pushing Brighton all the way in their FA Cup quarter-final.

Harris is looking forward to seeing his players tested in front of a full house at Elland Road.

“The lads have been vibrant the last ten days because of the performance at Birmingham and they carried it into Brighton when we were so much better than a Premier League side but didn’t get over the line,” Harris said.

“For 93 minutes we probably dominated Brighton, and the boys will remember that rather than focusing on a penalty shootout or a lapse in concentration, which was all that cost us a place in the semifinal of the FA Cup. “The boys are great, they look hungry and sharp and you certainly wouldn’t think the end of the season was nigh-on upon us.

They’re in great nick.

“It’s a good one to look forward to because sometimes you have a couple of weeks off and then don’t know what to expect. But we know what to expect from Leeds, they’re as fit as anyone in the division and play with a real tempo with and without the ball.

“We have to be ready and the players will be ready. We’ve trained to be ready for it.

“What a great challenge, 35-40,00 at Elland Road. Our fans love going there and the atmosphere will be electric. We’re going there to win the game and that’s the clear message to the group. We’re going into these remaining games to get results.”
